Response of soil physico-chemical properties to restoration approaches and submergence in the water level fluctuation zone of the Danjiangkou Reservoir, China

Elucidation of the dominant factors influencing N2O emission in water-level fluctuation zones in a karst canyon reservoir, southwest China

The water-level fluctuations zones (WLFZs) are crucial transitional interfaces within river-reservoir systems, serving as hotspots for N2O emission. However, the comprehension of response patterns and mechanisms governing N2O emission under hydrological fluctuation remains limited, especially in karstic canyon reservoirs, which introduces significant uncertainty to N2O flux assessments. Soil samples were collected from the WLFZs of the Hongjiadu (HJD) Reservoir along the water flow direction from transition zone (T1 and T2) to lacustrine zone (T3, T4 and T5) at three elevations for each site. These soil columns were used to conduct simulation experiments under various water-filled pore space gradients (WFPSs) to investigate the potential N2O flux pattern and elucidate the underlying mechanism. Our results showed that nutrient distribution and N2O flux pattern differed significantly between two zones, with the highest N2O fluxes in the transition zone sites and lacustrine zone sites were found at 75 % and 95 % WFPS, respectively. Soil nutrient loss in lower elevation areas is influenced by prolonged impoundment durations. The higher N2O fluxes in the lacustrine zone can be attributed to increased nutrient levels resulting from anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, correlation analysis revealed that soil bulk density significantly impacted N2O fluxes across all sites, while NO3-and SOC facilitated N2O emissions in T1-T2 and T4-T5, respectively. It was evident that N2O production primarily contributed to nitrification in the transition zone and was constrained by the mineralization process, whereas denitrification dominated in the lacustrine zone. Notably, the annual N2O efflux from WLFZs accounted for 27 % of that from the water-air interface in HJD Reservoir, indicating a considerably lower contribution than anticipated. Nevertheless, this study highlights the significance of WLFZs as a vital potential source of N2O emission, particularly under the influence of anthropogenic activities and high WFPS gradient.

Dry-wet cycling area enhances soil ecosystem multifunctionality in the aquatic-terrestrial ecotones of the Caohai Lake in China

The microbial need for nutrient resources can be assessed by soil extracellular enzymes and their stoichiometry. Changes in lake water levels affect land use and nutrient management in the aquatic-terrestrial ecotones of the lakeshore. However, the drivers of changes in microbial nutrient limitation under different inundation gradients in the lake's aquatic-terrestrial ecotones remain unclear. Here, based on vector analysis, we assessed microbial nutrient limitation by studying soil enzyme activities in four different inundation zones (heavy, moderate, mild, and non-inundation) in the aquatic-terrestrial ecotones of Caohai Lake. The findings indicate that inundation conditions significantly influenced the soil properties and enzyme activities. The mean nitrogen and phosphorus acquisition enzymes were higher in both moderate inundation (Mod-inu) and mild inundation (Mil-inu) zone soils, indicating rapid N and P turnover rates in these two zones. However, microorganisms had higher carbon requirements and higher enzyme C:N and vector lengths in heavily inundated compared to lightly inundated. Compared to the non-inundation zone, the microbial phosphorus limitation was found to be most severe in heavy inundation (Hea-inu) and Mod-inu zones. Decreased phosphorus limitation following the inundation weakens could be contributed to improving soil ecosystem multifunctionality. The alterations in the soil extracellular enzymes and stoichiometric characteristics in various inundation zones were primarily influenced by factors such as soil moisture content, available phosphorus, and nitrate nitrogen. Overall, the Mod-inu and Mil-inu zones can better maintain the multifunctionality of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; special attention should be given to the microbial phosphorus limitation in the Hea-inu zone in order to effectively manage nutrients and restore soil ecosystems in the aquatic-terrestrial ecotones.

Dynamics of Bacterioplankton Communities during Wet and Dry Seasons in the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei, China

Water quality is directly linked to drinking water safety for millions of people receiving the water. The Danjiangkou Reservoir is the main water source for the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MR-SNWDP), located in the vicinity of Henan and Hubei provinces in China. Aquatic microorganisms are key indicators of biologically assessing and monitoring the water quality of the reservoir as they are sensitive to environmental and water quality changes. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal variations in bacterioplankton communities during wet (April) and dry (October) seasons at eight monitoring points in Hanku reservoir and five monitoring points in Danku reservoir. Each time point had three replicates, labeled as wet season Hanku (WH), wet season Danku (WD), dry season Hanku (DH), and dry season Danku (DD) of Danjiangkou Reservoir in 2021. High-throughput sequencing (Illumina PE250) of the 16S rRNA gene was performed, and alpha (ACE and Shannon) and beta (PCoA and NDMS) diversity indices were analyzed. The results showed that the dry season (DH and DD) had more diverse bacterioplankton communities compared to the wet season (WH and WD). Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes were the most abundant phyla, and Acinetobacter, Exiguobacterium, and Planomicrobium were abundant in the wet season, while polynucleobacter was abundant in the dry season. The functional prediction of metabolic pathways revealed six major functions including carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, amino acid metabolism, signal transduction, and energy metabolism. Redundancy analysis showed that environmental parameters greatly affected bacterioplankton diversity during the dry season compared to the wet season. The findings suggest that seasonality has a significant impact on bacterioplankton communities, and the dry season has more diverse communities influenced by environmental parameters. Further, the relatively high abundance of certain bacteria such as Acinetobacter deteriorated the water quality during the wet season compared to the dry season. Our findings have significant implications for water resource management in China, and other countries facing similar challenges. However, further investigations are required to elucidate the role of environmental parameters in influencing bacterioplankton diversity in order to devise potential strategies for improving water quality management in the reservoir.

Water level-driven agricultural nonpoint source pollution dominated the ammonia variation in China's second largest reservoir

Rainfall-runoff and water flooding are the driving mechanisms of agricultural nonpoint source pollution (ANPSP), but existing research has hardly focused on water level-driven ANPSP. Danjiangkou Reservoir was the second largest reservoir in China, and its water quality was dominated by ANPSP. This study explored the effect of water level on water quality of Danjiangkou Reservoir and aimed to provide basis for water quality management of large reservoirs. The effect of water level-driven ANPSP on the concentration of reservoir ammonia was studied employing the methods of factor decomposition and multiple regression on a extensive time series data of reservoir ammonia, water level, rainfall, fertilizer usage, and inflow river ammonia. The long-term trend revealed the reservoir ammonia peaked in 2011 and the inflow river ammonia peaked in 2012 (Han River) and 2013 (Dan River), which indicated the success of point source control in the past 15 years and the dominant role of ANPSP in the reservoir ammonia in recent years. With the long-term trend series, the multiple regression results showed that 56% of the variation of the reservoir ammonia concentration was due to the water level (standardized regression coefficient 0.422), fertilizer usage (standardized regression coefficient 0.522), and inflow river ammonia (standardized regression coefficient 0.219). However, the rainfall was insignificant. The predominance of water level and fertilizer usage in explanation of the reservoir ammonia variation indicated that water level-driven ANPSP was the primary factor influencing the reservoir ammonia. The effect of water level was primarily reflected in the long-term variation of ammonia concentration rather than the seasonal variation within the year. This study showed that when compared with rainfall-driven ANPSP, water level-driven ANPSP had a greater impact on the reservoir ammonia. Water quality protection should center on the management of the water level-fluctuation zone.

Rhizosphere microorganisms of Crocus sativus as antagonists against pathogenic Fusarium oxysporum

INTRODUCTION

Several microorganisms in the plant root system, especially in the rhizosphere, have their own compositions and functions. Corm rot is the most severe disease of Crocus sativus, leading to more than 50% mortality in field production.

METHODS

In this study, metagenomic sequencing was used to analyze microbial composition and function in the rhizosphere of C. sativus for possible microbial antagonists against pathogenic Fusarium oxysporum.

RESULTS

The microbial diversity and composition were different in the C. sativus rhizosphere from different habitats. The diversity index (Simpson index) was significantly lower in the C. sativus rhizospheric soil from Chongming (Rs_CM) and degenerative C. sativus rhizospheric soil from Chongming (RsD_CM) than in others. Linear discriminant analysis effect size results showed that differences among habitats were mainly at the order (Burkholderiales, Micrococcales, and Hypocreales) and genus (Oidiodendron and Marssonina) levels. Correlation analysis of the relative lesion area of corm rot showed that Asanoa was the most negatively correlated bacterial genus (ρ = -0.7934, p< 0.001), whereas Moniliophthora was the most negatively correlated fungal genus (ρ = -0.7047, p< 0.001). The relative lesion area result showed that C. sativus from Qiaocheng had the highest resistance, followed by Xiuzhou and Jiande. C. sativus groups with high disease resistance had abundant pathogen resistance genes, such as chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase genes, from rhizosphere microorganisms. Further, 13 bacteria and 19 fungi were isolated from C. sativus rhizosphere soils, and antagonistic activity against pathogenic F. oxysporum was observed on potato dextrose agar medium. In vivo corm experiments confirmed that Trichoderma yunnanense SR38, Talaromyces sp. SR55, Burkholderia gladioli SR379, and Enterobacter sp. SR343 displayed biocontrol activity against corm rot disease, with biocontrol efficiency of 20.26%, 31.37%, 39.22%, and 14.38%, respectively.

DISCUSSION

This study uncovers the differences in the microbial community of rhizosphere soil of C. sativus with different corm rot disease resistance and reveals the role of four rhizospheric microorganisms in providing the host C. sativus with resistance against corm rot. The obtained biocontrol microorganisms can also be used for application research and field management.

The Seasonal Patterns, Ecological Function and Assembly Processes of Bacterioplankton Communities in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, China

As the water source for the Middle Route Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MR-SNWD) of China, the Danjiangkou Reservoir (DJR) is in the process of ecosystem reassembly, but the composition, function, and assembly mechanisms of bacterioplankton communities are not yet clear. In this study, the composition, distribution characteristics and influencing factors of bacterioplankton communities were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing (HTS); PICRUSt2 was used to predict community function; a molecular ecological network was used to analyze bacterioplankton interactions; and the assembly process of bacterioplankton communities was estimated with a neutral model. The results indicated that the communities, function and interaction of bacterioplankton in the DJR had significant annual and seasonal variations and that the seasonal differences were greater than that the annual differences. Excessive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrients in the DJR are the most important factors affecting water quality in the reservoir, N and P nutrients are the main factors affecting bacterial communities. Season is the most important factor affecting bacterioplankton N and P cycle functions. Ecological network analysis indicated that the average clustering coefficient and average connectivity of the spring samples were lower than those of the autumn samples, while the number of modules for the spring samples was higher than that for the autumn samples. The neutral model explained 66.3%, 63.0%, 63.0%, and 70.9% of the bacterioplankton community variations in samples in the spring of 2018, the autumn of 2018, the spring of 2019, and the autumn of 2019, respectively. Stochastic processes dominate bacterioplankton community assembly in the DJR. This study revealed the composition, function, interaction, and assembly of bacterioplankton communities in the DJR, providing a reference for the protection of water quality and the ecological functions of DJR bacterioplankton.

Plant-soil interactions and C:N:P stoichiometric homeostasis of plant organs in riparian plantation

Carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) stoichiometric ratios give valuable insight into ecosystem function. The purpose of the present study is to probe into the C, N, and P stoichiometric characteristics in various organs and their relationships with soil factors of the dominant deciduous conifer plant species (Taxodium ascendens and Taxodium distichum) during afforestation in the riparian zone of Three Gorges Reservoir. The results showed only a small change in the concentration of C in different plant organs and soils. T. ascendens contained mean N and P concentrations of 7.63 and 1.54 g/kg in fine roots, 5.10 and 0.56 g/kg in stems, and 15.48 and 2.30 g/kg in leaves, respectively. Whereas T. distichum had a mean N and P concentration of 7.08 and 1.37 g/kg in fine roots, 4.84 and 0.59 g/kg in stems, and 16.89 and 2.23 g/kg in leaves. The N:P ratios in all organs were below 14, indicating that N may have inhibited tree growth. The fine roots P and N:P of T. distichum were weak plasticity and weak homeostasis, and those of T. ascendens were plasticity and weak plasticity. Their stems and leaves adhere to strict homeostasis. N concentrations were significantly positively related to P concentrations in every tissue (except the stems of T. ascendens), and C concentrations were significantly positively associated with P concentrations in the stems and leaves of T. ascendens and T. distichum (p < 0.05). Likewise, soil P and fine root P were positively associated (p < 0.01). This study contributes to the understanding of deciduous conifer plant stoichiometry. It demonstrates N, P, and N:P stoichiometric homeostasis in T. ascendens and T. distichum, which can withstand flooding and are suitable for vegetation restoration in the hydro-fluctuation zone.

Artificial Plantation Responses to Periodic Submergence in Massive Dam and Reservoir Riparian Zones: Changes in Soil Properties and Bacterial Community Characteristics

This study focuses on plants in riparian zones that are very vulnerable due to water stress and anthropogenic disturbances, which are particularly important regarding their ecological and environmental role. Although plants and microbiome interactions are necessary for plant nutrient acquisition, relatively little is known about the responses of roots, bulk, and rhizosphere soil microbial communities of different artificial vegetation types in riparian areas of massive dams and reservoirs. Therefore, this study aims to assess the responses of woody and herbaceous plants in the riparian zones of the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir, China. Results revealed that the weight of dominant soil bacteria in different periods, including Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Cyanobacteria, was higher, and their composition was different in the rhizosphere, bulk soil, and endophyte. In the soil co-occurrence networks, the weight of soil physical properties was higher than chemical properties in the early emergence stage. The current study provides knowledge about bacteria in bulk, rhizosphere soils, and within roots in different emergence phases. Additionally, these results provide valuable information to inoculate the soil with key microbiota members by applying fertilizers, potentially improving plant and soil production and health.

Abstract

Plant and microbiome interactions are necessary for plant nutrient acquisition. However, relatively little is known about the responses of roots, bulk, and rhizosphere soil microbial communities in different artificial vegetation types (woody and herbaceous) in riparian areas of massive dams and reservoirs. Therefore, this study aims to assess such responses at elevations of 165–170 m a.s.l. in the riparian zones of the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir, China. The samples were collected containing the rhizosphere soil, bulk soil, and roots of herbaceous and woody vegetation at different emergence stages in 2018. Then, all the samples were analyzed to quantify the soil properties, bacterial community characteristics, and their interaction in the early and late emergence phases. In different periods, the weight of dominant soil bacteria, including Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Cyanobacteria, was higher, and their composition was different in the rhizosphere, bulk soil, and endophytes. Moreover, the soil co-occurrence networks indicated that the weight of soil physical properties was higher than chemical properties in the early emergence stage. In contrast, the weight of chemical properties was relatively higher in the late emergence stage. Furthermore, the richness and diversity of the bacterial community were mainly affected by soil organic matter. This study suggests that these herbaceous and woody vegetation are suitable for planting in reservoir areas affected by hydrology and human disturbance in light of soil nutrients and soil microbial communities, respectively. Additionally, these results provide valuable information to inoculate the soil with key microbiota members by applying fertilizers, potentially improving plant health and soil production.

Effects of long-term afforestation and natural grassland recovery on soil properties and quality in Loess Plateau (China)

Long-term afforestation has important implications on soil properties and quality in semi-arid areas. A large-scale afforestation project has been carried out in the Loess Plateau in the last 20 years. This work aims to study the afforestation (Robinia pseudoacacia, Caragana korshinskii and natural grassland recover 10, 20, 30, and 40 years after) impacts on soil properties and quality. The results showed that coverage and root biomass (RB) was the highest 30 years after the restoration in Robinia pseudoacacia and Caragana korshinskii treatments, while the highest 40 years post-restoration in natural grasslands. Sand content and BD showed the highest values 10 years post afforestation in all study areas. Clay, Silt, mean weight diameter (MWD), and geometric mean diameter (GMD) in Robinia pseudoacacia, Caragana korshinskii had the highest values 30 years after the afforestation, while in natural grasslands, this was observed 40 years after. In Robinia pseudoacacia, Caragana korshinskii treatments, soil moisture content (SMC) reached the highest levels 30 years post afforestation at 20-40 and 40-60 cm. Regarding natural grasslands, SMC had the highest values 40 years post-afforestation. Sand content and BD increased with soil depth, while the opposite was identified in RB, clay, silt, MWD, GMD and SMC. In Robinia pseudoacacia and Caragana korshinskii treatments, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, total phosphorous, and available phosphorus had the highest levels 40 years post-restoration at 0-20 cm, while at 20-40 and 40-60 cm, the highest concentrations were identified 30 years after. In all the treatments, the soil quality index (SQI) was the highest 40 years post-restoration. The values of SQI were always higher in natural grasslands than in Robinia pseudoacacia and Caragana korshinskii treatments. Overall, natural recovery (natural grasslands) is more efficient than afforestation (Robinia pseudoacacia and Caragana korshinskii treatments) in soil quality.

Spatiotemporal distribution, risk assessment and source appointment of metal(loid)s in water and sediments of Danjiangkou Reservoir, China

Danjiangkou Reservoir is the biggest artificial reservoir in China. But spatiotemporal distribution and risks of metal(loid)s in it were still unclear after the operation of Middle Route of South-to-North Water Diversion Project. In this study, distribution pattern of fifteen metal(loid)s in the Danjiangkou Reservoir was investigated. It was shown that metal(loid)s concentrations in the water were much lower than the drinking water quality standards in China, while Sb, Co, Cd and Cr were identified as the major pollutants in the sediments. Environment-metal(loid)s correlation analysis revealed total organic carbon, sulfate, temperature, dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus markedly controlled metal(loid)s distribution in the water, while organic carbon, total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen shaped their distribution in the sediments. Results of risk assessment further revealed that the sediments of Danjiangkou Reservoir were minor to moderate polluted, and Sb, Cd exhibited the highest potential ecological risk. Additionally, source identification showed agricultural activities (25.3%), industrial and mining activities (17.5%) and natural processes (57.2%) were the dominant sources of metal(loid)s burden in the sediments. Overall, the results are of significance to understanding the ecological risk and pollution sources in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, which is essential for the effective management of metal(loid)s pollution.

Rhizosphere Bacterial Community Structure and Predicted Functional Analysis in the Water-Level Fluctuation Zone of the Danjiangkou Reservoir in China During the Dry Period

The water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) is a transitional zone between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Plant communities that are constructed artificially in the WLFZ can absorb and retain nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). However, the microbial community composition and function associated with this process have not been elucidated. In this study, four artificially constructed plant communities, including those of herbs (Cynodon dactylon and Chrysopogon zizanioides), trees (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), and shrubs (Salix matsudana) from the newly formed WLFZ of the Danjiangkou Reservoir were evaluated. The bacterial community compositions were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing using a MiSeq platform, and the functions of these communities were assessed via Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) analysis. The results showed that the bacterial communities primarily comprised 362 genera from 24 phyla, such as Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Gemmatimonadetes, showing the richness of the community composition. Planting altered the bacterial community composition, with varying effects observed among the different plant types. The bacterial community functional analysis revealed that these bacteria were primarily associated with six biological metabolic pathway categories (e.g., metabolism, genetic information processing, and environmental information processing) with 34 subfunctions, showing the richness of community functions. The planting of M. glyptostroboides, S. matsudana, and C. dactylon improved the metabolic capabilities of bacterial communities. N- and P-cycling gene analysis showed that planting altered the N- and P-cycling metabolic capacities of soil bacteria. The overall N- and P-metabolic capacity was highly similar between C. dactylon and C. zizanioides samples and between S. matsudana and M. glyptostroboides samples. The results of this study provide a preliminary analysis of soil bacterial community structure and function in the WLFZ of the Danjiangkou Reservoir and provides a reference for vegetation construction in this zone.

Characteristics of organic phosphorus fractions in soil from water-level fluctuation zone by solution 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance and enzymatic hydrolysis

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient element for biological growth that can contribute to eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. Water trophic status and algae growth are primarily related to the content of bioavailable P, which is primarily related to enzymatically hydrolysable organic P(EHOP) and dissolved inorganic P(IP). In this study, soil samples from the water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) were collected from a tributary of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) to characterize the properties of organic P(OP) fractions using solution ³¹P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and enzymatic hydrolysis. ³¹P-NMR showed that orthophosphate was the main part of the bioavailable P in the WLFZ soil and accounted for 80.4% of the NaOH-EDTA extractable total P (NaOH-EDTA TP), while phosphate monoester accounted for 60.5% of NaOH-EDTA extractable OP (NaOH-EDTA OP). The soil properties and replenishment from the mainstream of the Yangtze River to the Pengxi River have a certain effect on the content and distribution of P forms in the WLFZ soil of the tributary. The EHOP accounted for 28.1% of the NaOH-EDTA OP, and a significant positive correlation was observed between labile monoester P and EHOP and organic matter (OM). The water-soluble OP(H₂O-OP), bicarbonate-extractable OP(NaHCO₃-OP), and Fe- and Al-associated OP(Fe/Al-OP) were significantly hydrolyzed by phosphatase and thus exhibited great release potential. The ranking of the bioavailability of OP was Fe/Al-OP > H₂O-OP > NaHCO₃-OP. Phytate-like P were mainly found in H₂O-OP and NaHCO₃-OP, which indicated that periodic submersion-emersion cycles promoted the release of phytate-like P from Fe/Al-OP into the water column of the TGR. These observations suggest that when the external P input was effectively controlled, a huge risk of release of the internal OP from the WLFZ soil, and the biogeochemical cycling of the bioavailable P played an important role in maintaining the eutrophication of the reservoir.

Is water shortage risk decreased at the expense of deteriorating water quality in a large water supply reservoir?

Reservoir operations affect both the quantity and quality of stored and discharged water. Hedging rules (HRs) are commonly used in water supply reservoir operations to ration water delivery and decrease water shortage risk. However, the increased carryover storage with hedging may aggravate reservoir eutrophication through complex effects on hydrodynamic, temperature, light, nutrient, and sediment conditions. The influencing mechanisms are unclear and require further investigation. This study applies a mathematical modeling approach to comparing the effects of standard operation policy (SOP) and HR, discussing the processes and driving factors, and exploring the relationship between water shortage and water quality indicators. We simulate reservoir operation by SOP and optimize HR to generate water supply schedules, and run a quasi-3D water quality model to simulate reservoir hydrodynamic conditions, nutrient cycles, water-sediment exchanges, and algal dynamics under various water supply schedules. The Danjiangkou Reservoir, the water source for China's South-North Water Transfer Project, is used as a case study. The HR for this reservoir decreases its water shortage risk from 22% under SOP to 8%. Modeling results find that the HR increases sediment phosphorus (P) release by 285.3 tons (5.7%) annually as a consequence of extended reservoir submerged area and aggravated hypolimnetic hypoxia. Increased P release can support algal growth, but this effect is set off by the enhancement of light limiting effect caused by higher storages under HR, consequently decreasing the annual mean chlorophyll a concentration in the deep reservoir by 18%. The HR also improves the horizontal mixing of water by changing the hydraulic retention time and flow velocity field, which mitigates algal bloom risks in the surrounding shallow-water zones but deteriorates water quality of the release to downstream. The water quality analysis offers implications for reservoir managers to coordinate their efforts in mitigating risks of water shortage and water quality degradation.

Impact of long-term water level fluctuation on the distribution, transport, and fate of phosphorus in reservoir sediment

Water level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) with changeable environmental conditions would affect the transport and release of nutrients in the sediment. To investigate the influence of long-term water level fluctuations on sediment phosphorus (P), a reservoir sediment partitioning method based on historical water level was developed and applied in the Biliuhe Reservoir. The reservoir sediment was divided into frequent fluctuation zone (FFZ), fluctuation zone of continuous droughts (DFZ), and continuously submerged zone (CSZ). Sediment cores in different zones were collected and P was analyzed. TP content in the surface sediment progressively increased from FFZ, DFZ, to CSZ except the 0-10-cm samples of D1, and TP content of sediment cores increased gradually with decreasing depth except D1 core. Ferric iron-bound P (Fe-P) and organic P (OP) exhibited uniform spatial variation with TP, while no clear patterns were found with regard to the other forms. Fe-P composed most of TP (54.67 ± 10.15%) and had a significant positive correlation with stable OP (5.55 ± 2.07%). The contributions of Fe-P, detrital apatite P (Det-P), and OP are stable among the four cores, indicating that the relationship between the various P forms is relatively stable despite variations in environmental conditions of WLFZ. The alternation of deposition and erosion under long-term water level fluctuation can promote P transport down-flow, which can be prevented by the continuous growth of plants in WLFZ. Thus, the reasonable use of the plant growth in WLFZ can control the P load of the reservoir.
