Excitation functions for fast neutron induced reactions on iron and lead

Cross sections of the 54Fe(n,p)54Mn, 54Fe(n,α)51Cr, 56Fe(n,p)56Mn and 204Pb (n,2n)203Pb reactions induced by D-T neutrons were obtained with activation method and γ-ray spectrometry technique. Experimental values measured in this work are consistent with most of the previous literature data. These reactions cross sections were theoretically calculated by using the TALYS-1.96 and EMPIRE-3.2.3 codes from threshold up to 20 MeV, and significant discrepancies were found between calculated results and experiment data. In addition, experimental values are compared with evaluated nuclear data of the CENDL-3.2, ENDF/B-VIII.0, JENDL-5, BROND-3.1 and JEFF-3.3 libraries, and significant difference was found for the 54Fe(n,α)51Cr reaction in ENDF/B-VIII.0 library but not for other reactions.

Concordant B and T Cell Heterogeneity Inferred from the Multiomic Landscape of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells in a Crohn's Disease Cohort

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Crohn's disease is characterized by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract due to a combination of genetic, immune, and environmental factors. Transcriptomic and epigenomic profiling of intestinal tissue of Crohn's disease patients have revealed valuable insights into pathology, however have not been conducted jointly on less invasive peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Furthermore, the heterogeneous responses to treatments among individuals with Crohn's disease imply hidden diversity of pathological mechanisms.

METHODS

We employed single nucleus multiomic analysis, integrating both snRNA-seq and snATAC-seq of PBMCs with a variety of open source bioinformatics applications.

RESULTS

Our findings reveal a diverse range of transcriptional signatures among individuals, highlighting the heterogeneity in PBMC profiles. Nevertheless, striking concordance between three heterogeneous groups was observed across B cells and T cells. Differential gene regulatory mechanisms partially explain these profiles, notably including a signature involving TGFß signaling in two individuals with Crohn's disease. A mutation mapped to a transcription factor binding site within a differentially accessible peak associated with the expression of this pathway, with implications for a personalized approach to understanding disease pathology.

CONCLUSIONS

This study highlights how multiomic analysis can reveal common regulatory mechanisms that underlie heterogeneity of PBMC profiles, one of which may be specific to inflammatory disease.

Development and Validation of a Nomogram Model to Predict Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Objectives: Polysomnography was class I test for who was suspected of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) which would cost lots of time and money. This study aimed to develop a nomogram model mainly based on oxygen and blood routine indicators to predict OSA. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 685 patients with suspected OSA at our hospital. Multivariate analysis was used to construct a nomogram. The performance of the nomogram was assessed using calibration and discrimination. Results: The multivariate analysis identified age, gender, body mass index, mean pulse oxygen saturation, percent nighttime with oxygen saturation less than 90%, red blood cell, hematocrit, and red blood cell distribution width SD as significant factors (P < .05). A nomogram was created for the prediction of OSA using these clinical parameters and was internally validated using a bootstrapping method. Our nomogram model showed good discrimination and calibration in terms of predicting OSA, and had a C-index of 0.935 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.917-0.954] according to the internal validation. Discrimination and calibration in the validation group were also good (C-index, 0.957; 95% CI, 0.930-0.984). Conclusion: The newly developed nomogram can effectively help physicians make better clinical decisions, which may save a lot of time and costs.

Allulose mitigates chronic enteritis by reducing mitochondria dysfunction via regulating cathepsin B production

Metabolic changes have been linked to the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes colitis. Allulose, an endogenous bioactive monosaccharide, is vital to the synthesis of numerous compounds and metabolic processes within living organisms. Nevertheless, the precise biochemical mechanism by which allulose inhibits colitis remains unknown. Allulose is an essential and intrinsic protector of the intestinal mucosal barrier, as it maintains the integrity of tight junctions in the intestines, according to the current research. It is also important to know that there is a link between the severity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC), chemically-induced colitis in rodents, and lower levels of allulose in the blood. Mice with colitis, either caused by dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) or naturally occurring colitis in IL-10-/- mice, had less damage to their intestinal mucosa after being given allulose. Giving allulose to a colitis model starts a chain of reactions because it stops cathepsin B from ejecting and helps lysosomes stick together. This system effectively stops the activity of myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) when intestinal epithelial damage happens. This stops the breakdown of tight junction integrity and the start of mitochondrial dysfunction. To summarise, the study's findings have presented data that supports the advantageous impact of allulose in reducing the advancement of colitis. Its ability to stop the disruption of the intestinal barrier enables this. Therefore, allulose has potential as a medicinal supplement for treating colitis.

Fast neutron induced reaction cross sections on natural manganese and tantalum

The cross sections for the 55Mn(n,2n)54Mn, 181Ta(n,2n)180gTa, and 181Ta(n,p)181Hf reactions were measured to be 705.1 ± 26.1 mb at 14.0 MeV, 1362.7 ± 87.2 mb at 13.6 MeV, and 2.31 ± 0.09 mb at 13.6 MeV, respectively, by using an off-line γ-ray spectroscopic technique. The neutrons were produced via the 3H(d,n)4He reaction. The monitor reactions 27Al(n,α)24Na and 93Nb(n,2n)92mNb were used for neutron flux determination. The results from the present work were compared with those of the literature and the evaluated data from ENDF/B-VIII.0, JEFF-3.3, JENDL-5, CENDL-3.2, and BROND-3.1 libraries. Besides, the cross sections were also estimated with the TALYS-1.96 nuclear model code using different level density models for a better description of the present work and literature data. The present experimental results were found to be in good agreement with most of the available literature data and with the evaluated data.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis presenting headache: A case report and review of literature

RATIONALE

Central nervous system involvement is a rare manifestation of active-phaselocalized Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). In hypertrophic dura meningitis, GPA with headache is typical. In this case, cerebral magnetic resonance (MR) enhancement revealed no meningeal thickening, to our knowledge, this manifestation had not been found previously.

PATIENT CONCERNS

The patient presented to the Rheumatology and Immunology Clinic with severe headache and hearing loss, and central nervous system granulomatosis with polyangiitis was confirmed after a series of examinations. The patient had no significant effect after treatment with cyclophosphamide (CTX), but after the use of rituximab, the headache and hearing loss were significantly improved, and laboratory indicators returned to normal levels.

DIAGNOSIS

We comprehensively screened for craniocerebral infection and malignant tumors, diagnosed central nervous system granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

INTERVENTIONS

We gave sequential treatment of rituximab.

OUTCOMES

All indicators are mostly back to normal when the patient was monitored at the outpatient clinic.

LESSONS

GPA and severe headache are more prevalent in hypertrophic dura meningitis, but the patient early headache could not be explained by hypertrophic dura meningitis or localized granulomatous lesions that invaded the central nervous system. Patients with severe headaches likely have vascular inflammation and local bone destruction at the base of the skull.

Arabinose confers protection against intestinal injury by improving integrity of intestinal mucosal barrier

There is a growing amount of research that highlights the significant involvement of metabolic imbalance and the inflammatory response in the advancement of colitis. Arabinose is a naturally occurring bioactive monosaccharide that plays a crucial role in the metabolic processes and synthesis of many compounds in living organisms. However, the more detailed molecular mechanism by which the administration of arabinose alleviates the progression of colitis and its associated carcinogenesis is still not fully understood. In the present study, arabinose is recognized as a significant and inherent protector of the intestinal mucosal barrier through its role in preserving the integrity of tight junctions within the intestines. Also, it is important to note that there is a positive correlation between the severity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC), as well as chemically-induced colitis in mice, and lower levels of arabinose in the bloodstream. In two mouse models of colitis, caused by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) or by spontaneous colitis in IL-10-/- mice, damage to the intestinal mucosa was reduced by giving the mice arabinose. When arabinose is administrated to model with colitis, it sets off a chain of events that help keep the lysosomes together and stop cathepsin B from being released. During the progression of intestinal epithelial injury, this process blocks myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) from damaging tight junctions and causing mitochondrial dysfunction. In summary, the results of the study have provided evidence supporting the beneficial effects of arabinose in mitigating the progression of colitis. This is achieved through its ability to avoid dysregulation of the intestinal barrier. Consequently, arabinose may hold promise as a therapeutic supplementation for the management of colitis.

Measurement and analysis of leakage neutron spectra from Lead slab samples with D-T neutrons

The leakage neutron spectra from three different sizes of Lead samples were measured by a TOF technique at 60° and 120°. The essential characteristic properties of the experimental measurement spectra can be reproduced well by MCNP code simulations with the ENDF/B-VIII.0, CENDL-3.2, JENDL-5.0, JEFF-3.3 and TENDL-2021 evaluated nuclear data libraries. The calculated results of JENDL-5.0 and JEFF-3.3 libraries agree better with the experimental data in the whole energy range. The results from ENDF/B-VIII.0 and CENDL-3.2 are overestimated in the 4-9 MeV range at 60° and in the 4-12.5 MeV range at 120°. The differences of the leakage neutron spectra by MCNP simulations using five evaluated nuclear data libraries mainly originate from the differences of the spectrum distributions of neutron reaction channels in these libraries. And the secondary neutron energy distribution and angular distribution from the five libraries have been present to explain it.

Deep learning approaches for differentiating thyroid nodules with calcification: a two-center study

BACKGROUND

Calcification is a common phenomenon in both benign and malignant thyroid nodules. However, the clinical significance of calcification remains unclear. Therefore, we explored a more objective method for distinguishing between benign and malignant thyroid calcified nodules.

METHODS

This retrospective study, conducted at two centers, involved a total of 631 thyroid nodules, all of which were pathologically confirmed. Ultrasound image sets were employed for analysis. The primary evaluation index was the area under the receiver-operator characteristic curve (AUROC). We compared the diagnostic performance of deep learning (DL) methods with that of radiologists and determined whether DL could enhance the diagnostic capabilities of radiologists.

RESULTS

The Xception classification model exhibited the highest performance, achieving an AUROC of up to 0.970, followed by the DenseNet169 model, which attained an AUROC of up to 0.959. Notably, both DL models outperformed radiologists (P < 0.05). The success of the Xception model can be attributed to its incorporation of deep separable convolution, which effectively reduces the model's parameter count. This feature enables the model to capture features more effectively during the feature extraction process, resulting in superior performance, particularly when dealing with limited data.

CONCLUSIONS

This study conclusively demonstrated that DL outperformed radiologists in differentiating between benign and malignant calcified thyroid nodules. Additionally, the diagnostic capabilities of radiologists could be enhanced with the aid of DL.

Value of Artificial Intelligence in Improving the Accuracy of Diagnosing TI-RADS Category 4 Nodules

OBJECTIVE

Considerable heterogeneity is observed in the malignancy rates of thyroid nodules classified as category 4 according to the Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS). This study was aimed at comparing the diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence algorithms and radiologists with different experience levels in distinguishing benign and malignant TI-RADS 4 (TR4) nodules.

METHODS

Between January 2019 and September 2022, 1117 TR4 nodules with well-defined pathological findings were collected for this retrospective study. An independent external data set of 125 TR4 nodules was incorporated for testing purposes. Traditional feature-based machine learning (ML) models, deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) models and a fusion model that integrated the prediction outcomes from all models were used to classify benign and malignant TR4 nodules. A fivefold cross-validation approach was employed, and the diagnostic performance of each model and radiologists was compared.

RESULTS

In the external test data set, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of the three DCNN-based secondary transfer learning models-InceptionV3, DenseNet121 and ResNet50-were 0.852, 0.837 and 0.856, respectively. These values were higher than those of the three traditional ML models-logistic regression, multilayer perceptron and random forest-at 0.782, 0.790, and 0.767, respectively, and higher than that of an experienced radiologist (0.815). The fusion diagnostic model we developed, with an AUROC of 0.880, was found to outperform the experienced radiologist in diagnosing TR4 nodules.

CONCLUSION

The integration of artificial intelligence algorithms into medical imaging studies could improve the accuracy of identifying high-risk TR4 nodules pre-operatively and have significant clinical application potential.

Study on Green Nanofluid Profile Control and Displacement of Oil in a Low Permeability Reservoir

Low permeability reservoirs are characterized by low permeability, small pore throat, strong heterogeneity, and poor injection-production ability. High shale content of the reservoir, strong pressure sensitivity, micropore undersaturation, and significant water-lock effect in water injection development lead to increased fluid seepage resistance. There is an urgent need to adopt physical and chemical methods to supplement energy and improve infiltration efficiency, thereby forming effective methods for increasing the production and efficiency. Aiming at the characteristics of ultralow permeability reservoirs, in this paper, a green and environmental friendly biobased profile control and displacement agent (Bio Nano30) has been developed using noncovalent supramolecular interaction. Physical simulation experiments illustrate the profile control and displacement mechanism of Bio-Nano30. Laboratory experiments and field applications show that good results have been achieved in oil well plugging removal, water well pressure reduction and injection increase, and well group profile control and oil displacement. This research has good application prospects in low permeability heterogeneous reservoirs.

Comparative efficacy of four exercise types on obesity-related outcomes in breast cancer survivors: A Bayesian network meta-analysis

PURPOSE

Exercise training is associated with improving the prognosis of breast cancer survivors, but no studies have evaluated the optimal exercise intervention. We aimed to investigate the most effective exercise intervention to improve obesity-related outcomes in breast cancer survivors.

METHODS

A comprehensive search strategy was conducted in Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Chinese biomedical literature databases from the time of library construction to April 2, 2023. We included randomized controlled trials reporting the effects of four types of exercise interventions (aerobic exercise; aerobic combined with resitance exercise, resitstance exercise and mind-body exercise ) on obesity-related outcomes in breast cancer survivors. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to analyze and rank the effectiveness of four exercise types.

RESULTS

A total of 76 randomized controlled trials that contained 5610 breast cancer survivors were included. The treatment effect of combined aerobic and resistance exercise (mean difference = -0.59; 95% credible interval: 1.15, -0.08) was significantly better than that of the control groups in terms of body mass index. For percentage of body fat, combined aerobic and resistance exercise (mean difference = -1.74; 95% credible interval: 0.87, -0.90) and aerobic exercise (mean difference = -1.16; 95% credible interval: 2.15, -0.16) were significantly better than controls. Subgroup analysis suggested that combined aerobic and resistance exercise significantly affected body mass index at an intervention duration >12 weeks or weekly time on exercise >150 min.

CONCLUSION

Our network meta-analysis found combined aerobic and resistance exercise may be the most effective intervention to improve obesity-related outcomes in breast cancer survivors. In addition, intervention duration and participant adherence are important factors that influence the effectiveness of exercise interventions.

Anti-reflux effects of a novel esophagogastric asymmetric anastomosis technique after laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy

BACKGROUND

Reflux esophagitis is a common postoperative complication of proximal gastrectomy. There is an urgent need for a safer method of performing esophageal-gastric anastomosis that reduces the risk of reflux after proximal gastrectomy. We hypothesize that a novel technique termed esophagogastric asymmetric anastomosis (EGAA) can prevent postoperative reflux in a safe and feasible manner.

AIM

To observe a novel method of EGAA to prevent postoperative reflux.

METHODS

Initially, we employed a thermal stress computer to simulate and analyze gastric peristalsis at the site of an esophagogastric asymmetric anastomosis. This was done in order to better understand the anti-reflux function and mechanism. Next, we performed digestive tract reconstruction using the EGAA technique in 13 patients who had undergone laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy. Post-surgery, we monitored the structure and function of the reconstruction through imaging exams and gastroscopy. Finally, the patients were followed up to assess the efficacy of the anti-reflux effects.

RESULTS

Our simulation experiments have demonstrated that the clockwise contraction caused by gastric peristalsis and the expansion of the gastric fundus caused by the increase of intragastric pressure could significantly tighten the anastomotic stoma, providing a means to prevent the reverse flow of gastric fluids. Thirteen patients with esophagogastric junction tumors underwent laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy, with a mean operation time of 304.2 ± 44.3 min. After the operation, the upper gastroenterography in supine/low head positions showed that eight patients exhibited no gastroesophageal reflux, three had mild reflux, and two had obvious reflux. The abdominal computed tomography examination showed a valve-like structure at the anastomosis. During follow-up, gastroscopy revealed a closed valve-like form at the anastomosis site without stenosis or signs of reflux esophagitis in 11 patients. Only two patients showed gastroesophageal reflux symptoms and mild reflux esophagitis and were treated with proton pump inhibitor therapy.

CONCLUSION

EGAA is a feasible and safe surgical method, with an excellent anti-reflux effect after proximal gastrectomy.

[Identification the key factor of pulmonary fibrosis following silica nanoparticles exposure based on bioinformatics analysis]

Objective: To investigate the main mechanisms of pulmonary fibrosis following silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) exposure through constructing the macrophage-fibroblast model in vitro, which simulated the process of pulmonary fibrosis. Methods: In January 2021, human mononuclear leukemia cells (THP-1) were treated with 0, 25, 50, 100 μg/ml SiNPs for 24 h. The supernatant of THP-1 cells was collected and applied to human embryonic lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5) which divided into control and low, medium and high dose groups at the logarithmic growth stage for 24 h. MRC-5 cell viability was detected by CCK8. The hydroxyproline (Hyp), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) expression were detected in the supernatants of MRC-5. The changed proteins were detected by liquid-phase mass spectrometry in high dose group. GeneCard database were applied to identity the differential pulmonary fibrosis proteins in high dose group. Gene Ontology (GO) was performed to identity the key biological process in differential pulmonary fibrosis proteins of high dose group. The String database was used to construct the protein-protein interactions (PPI) network of differential pulmonary fibrosis proteins. The APP of CytoHubba was applied to calculate the key protein of differential pulmonary fibrosis proteins in PPI network. Correlation coefficients between key differential pulmonary fibrosis proteins were calculated using Pearson correlation analysis. Western blotting was applied to detect the expression of key proteins of differential pulmonary fibrosis proteins in different groups. Results: CCK8 results showed that MRC-5 cell viability was increasing in low, medium and high dose groups compared with control group (P<0.05). The expression levels of Hyp and IL-1β in different group were increased compared with control group, the expression levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were increased in high dose group compared with control group (P<0.05). GeneCard database identified 26 differential pulmonary fibrosis proteins, which were mainly involved in extracellular matrix hydrolysis, cell inflammatory response, tissue repair, cell proliferation, inflammation response by GO analysis. The APP of CytoHubba was calculated that matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) and tissue inhibitor metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP1) played an important role in PPI network. The results of correlation analysis showed that MMP9 was correlated with the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1), matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP3), TIMP1 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) (r=0.97, 0.98, 0.94, 0.93, P<0.05). Western blotting results showed that TIMP1 protein expression was increased in low, medium and high dose groups, while MMP9 protein expression was increased only in high dose group (P<0.05) . Conclusion: Differential expression proteins related with pulmonary fibrosis in MRC-5 cells mainly regulate biological processes of extracellular matrix hydrolysis, tissue repair, and cellular inflammation response following SiNPs exposure. MMP9 and TIMP1 may be the key proteins, which affected the fibrosis process in vitro pulmonary fibrosis model.

Impact of Obstructive Sleep Apnea on Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Partial Laryngectomy for Laryngeal Cancer

Objectives: To evaluate the possible risk factors of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its impact on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with partial laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer. Methods: A cross-sectional method was used to carry out this study. Patients who underwent partial laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer completed overnight polygraphy (PG) home sleep tests and quality of life questionnaires. The Medical Outcome Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire was used to investigate the factors influencing HRQoL. Results: A total of 59 patients completed the PG tests and quality of life questionnaires, with 74.6% demonstrating evidence of OSA. There were significant differences in tumor area and neck dissection between OSA group and non-OSA groups. Based on sleep-related parameters, patients were divided into cluster 1 (n = 14) and cluster 2 (n = 45) using principal component analysis combined with K-means clustering. Two clusters had significantly different scores of body pain, general health, and health transition in SF-36 domains. Independent factors associated with general health were identified as tobacco use (OR = 4.716), alcohol use (OR = 3.193), and OSA-related condition (OR = 11.336). Conclusions: Larger tumor area and neck dissection might be associated with an increased risk for developing OSA in patients with partial laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer. OSA partially mediated the effect on physical health, including body pain, general health, and health transition. It is important to be aware of the potential impact of OSA on diminished HRQoL of these patients.

Dynamics of Bacterioplankton Communities during Wet and Dry Seasons in the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei, China

Water quality is directly linked to drinking water safety for millions of people receiving the water. The Danjiangkou Reservoir is the main water source for the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MR-SNWDP), located in the vicinity of Henan and Hubei provinces in China. Aquatic microorganisms are key indicators of biologically assessing and monitoring the water quality of the reservoir as they are sensitive to environmental and water quality changes. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal variations in bacterioplankton communities during wet (April) and dry (October) seasons at eight monitoring points in Hanku reservoir and five monitoring points in Danku reservoir. Each time point had three replicates, labeled as wet season Hanku (WH), wet season Danku (WD), dry season Hanku (DH), and dry season Danku (DD) of Danjiangkou Reservoir in 2021. High-throughput sequencing (Illumina PE250) of the 16S rRNA gene was performed, and alpha (ACE and Shannon) and beta (PCoA and NDMS) diversity indices were analyzed. The results showed that the dry season (DH and DD) had more diverse bacterioplankton communities compared to the wet season (WH and WD). Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes were the most abundant phyla, and Acinetobacter, Exiguobacterium, and Planomicrobium were abundant in the wet season, while polynucleobacter was abundant in the dry season. The functional prediction of metabolic pathways revealed six major functions including carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, amino acid metabolism, signal transduction, and energy metabolism. Redundancy analysis showed that environmental parameters greatly affected bacterioplankton diversity during the dry season compared to the wet season. The findings suggest that seasonality has a significant impact on bacterioplankton communities, and the dry season has more diverse communities influenced by environmental parameters. Further, the relatively high abundance of certain bacteria such as Acinetobacter deteriorated the water quality during the wet season compared to the dry season. Our findings have significant implications for water resource management in China, and other countries facing similar challenges. However, further investigations are required to elucidate the role of environmental parameters in influencing bacterioplankton diversity in order to devise potential strategies for improving water quality management in the reservoir.

Disability weight measurement for the severity of different diseases in Wuhan, China

BACKGROUND

Measurement of the Chinese burden of disease with disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) requires disability weight (DW) that quantify health losses for all non-fatal consequences of disease and injury. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2013 DW study indicates that it is limited by lack of geographic variation in DW data and by the current measurement methodology. We aim to estimate DW for a set of health states from major diseases in the Wuhan population.

METHODS

We conducted the DW measurement study for 206 health states through a household survey with computer-assisted face-to-face interviews and a web-based survey. Based on GBD 2013 DW study, paired comparison (PC) and Population health equivalence (PHE) method was used and different PC/PHE questions were randomly assigned to each respondent. In statistical analysis, the PC data was analyzed by probit regression. The probit regression results will be anchored by results from the PHE data analyzed by interval regression on the DW scale units between 0 (no loss of health) and 1 (loss equivalent to death).

RESULTS

A total of 2610 and 3140 individuals were included in the household and web-based survey, respectively. The results from the total pooled data showed health state "mild anemia" (DW = 0.005, 95% UI 0.000-0.027) or "allergic rhinitis (hay fever)" (0.005, 95% UI 0.000-0.029) had the lowest DW and "heroin and other opioid dependence, severe" had the highest DW (0.699, 95% UI 0.579-0.827). A high correlation coefficient (Pearson's r = 0.876; P < 0.001) for DWs of same health states was observed between Wuhan's survey and GBD 2013 DW survey. Health states referred to mental symptom, fatigue, and the residual category of other physical symptoms were statistically significantly associated with a lower Wuhan's DWs than the GBD's DWs. Health states with disfigurement and substance use symptom had a higher DW in Wuhan population than the GBD 2013 study.

CONCLUSIONS

This set of DWs could be used to calculate local diseases burden for health policy-decision in Wuhan population. The DW differences between the GBD's survey and Wuhan's survey suggest that there might be some contextual or culture factors influencing assessment on the severity of diseases.

Developmental Neurotoxicity of Difenoconazole in Zebrafish Embryos

Difenoconazole is a type of triazole fungicide that is widely used in the treatment of plant diseases. Triazole fungicides have been shown in several studies to impair the development of the nervous system in zebrafish embryos. There is still little known about difenoconazole-induced neurotoxicity in fish. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/L of difenoconazole solution until 120 h post-fertilization (hpf). The difenoconazole-exposed groups showed concentration-dependent inhibitory tendencies in heart rate and body length. Malformation rate and spontaneous movement of zebrafish embryos increased, and the locomotor activity decreased in the highest exposure group. The content of dopamine and acetylcholine was reduced significantly in difenoconazole treatment groups. The activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was also increased after treatment with difenoconazole. Furthermore, the expression of genes involved in neurodevelopment was remarkably altered, which corresponded with the alterations of neurotransmitter content and AChE activity. These results indicated that difenoconazole might affect the development of the nervous system through influencing neurotransmitter levels, enzyme activity, and the expression of neural-related genes, ultimately leading to abnormal locomotor activity in the early stages of zebrafish.

How do nurses manage their work under time pressure? Occurrence of implicit rationing of nursing care in the intensive care unit: A qualitative study

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to explore the experience of intensive care unit nurses under time pressure and the occurrence of implicit rationing under time pressure.

METHODS

In-depth audio-recorded interviews were conducted with 18 intensive care unit nurses. Colaizzi seven-step analysis of phenomenological data was used.

FINDINGS

Three themes emerged from the analysis: the influence of internal and external environments, perceived differences in time pressure, and broad coping styles.

CONCLUSIONS

Under the influence of various factors, including continuous or intermittent time pressure, nurses employ strategies to deal with the pressure. Sometimes, these strategies allow them to complete all their necessary work. However, with the increase in time pressure, sometimes some work that must be done is changed into work that should be done in the consciousness of nurses. In such cases, nurses choose the strategy of implicit rationing to deal with time pressure.

Activation cross sections for reactions induced by 14 MeV neutrons on natural titanium

Cross sections for the neutrons around 14 MeV interaction with natural titanium were precisely measured by neutron activation and off-line measurement technique. The fast neutrons were produced by ³H(d,n)⁴He reaction and the neutron energy was obtained by using the cross section ratio method of ⁹⁰Zr(n,2n)⁸⁹Zr to ⁹³Nb(n,2n)^92mNb reactions. Experimental cross sections have been acquired for ^natTi(n,x)⁴⁶Sc, ^natTi(n,x)⁴⁷Sc, ⁵⁰Ti(n,x)⁴⁷Ca and ⁴⁸Ti(n,x)⁴⁸Sc reactions. The measured cross section data are compared with the experimental data available in the previous literature and evaluated nuclear data from the ENDF/B-VIII.0, JEFF-3.3, JENDL-5, BROND-3.1, CENDL-3.2 and FENDL-3.2b libraries. Furthermore, excitation functions for these reactions were calculated by using the theoretical model based on Talys-1.96 code with default and adjusted parameters. Within experimental error, evaluated nuclear data are mostly consistent with experimental data. The excitation function with adjusted parameters can roughly reproduce the experimental data.

Interfacial Regulation of ZIF-67 on Bacteria to Generate Bifunctional Sensing Material on Chip for Qualifying Cell-Released Reactive Oxygen Species

Cell's activities are highly dependent on signal molecules, of which reactive oxygen species of the superoxide anion (O₂^•-) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) are important ones that always work together to regulate biological processes such as apoptosis and oxidative stress. It is of significance to realize simultaneous qualification of O₂^•- and H₂O₂ but it still faces challenges particularly in live-cell assay with a complex environment. We report the design of a bifunctional sensing material by interfacially regulating ZIF-67 on bacteria Shewanella putrefaciens to generate cobalt nanoparticles/nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanorods (Co/N-doped CNRs) and its sensing chip for qualifying cell-released O₂^•- and H₂O₂. Co/N-doped CNRs exhibit unique properties including porous structure for significantly increased reaction surface area and coordinating Co nanoparticles for rich active sites. The bifunctional Co/N-doped CNRs is used to fabricate the electrochemical sensing chip, which achieves a fast response time (0.5 s for O₂^•-, 1.9 s for H₂O₂), a low detection limit (0.69 nM for O₂^•-, 2.25 μM for H₂O₂), and a remarkably high sensitivity (792.30 μA·μM^-1·cm^-2 for O₂^•-, 153.91 μA·mM^-1·cm^-2 for H₂O₂), among the best of reported bifunctional nanozymes.

Human lung organoid: Models for respiratory biology and diseases

The human respiratory system, consisting of the airway and alveoli, is one of the most complex organs directly interfaced with the external environment. The diverse epithelial cells lining the surface are usually the first cell barrier that comes into contact with pathogens that could lead to deadly pulmonary disease. There is an urgent need to understand the mechanisms of self-renewal and protection of these epithelial cells against harmful pathogens, such as SARS-CoV-2. Traditional models, including cell lines and mouse models, have extremely limited native phenotypic features. Therefore, in recent years, to mimic the complexity of the lung, airway and alveoli organoid technology has been developed and widely applied. TGF-β/BMP/SMAD, FGF and Wnt/β-catenin signaling have been proven to play a key role in lung organoid expansion and differentiation. Thus, we summarize the current novel lung organoid culture strategies and discuss their application for understanding the lung biological features and pathophysiology of pulmonary diseases, especially COVID-19. Lung organoids provide an excellent in vitro model and research platform.

Performance Evaluation and Action Mechanism Analysis of a Controllable Release Nanocapsule Profile Control and Displacement Agent

With the acceleration in oilfield developments, reservoir advantage channels have been gradually developed. This has led to ineffective circulation in the oilfield injection system and a significant decrease in production. The profile control and displacement technology of low-permeability and heterogeneous reservoirs are in urgent need of updating. In this paper, an intelligent profile control and displacement agent is proposed. The controlled release mechanism and profile control and displacement mechanism is clarified by physical simulation experiments. The profile control agent is a nanocapsule with environmental response and controlled release. The structure of the capsule is a core-shell structure, which is composed of an amphiphilic copolymer AP-g-PNIPAAM and Janus functional particles. The surface chemical stability of the micro/nanocapsule is analyzed by a potentiometric method. The study shows that a temperature at 45 °C causes a potential change in the micro/nanocapsule, indicating that the micro/nanocapsule has a slow release at this temperature. When the temperature is in the range of 40 to 45 °C, the absorbance greatly increases; therefore, it is considered that the capsule wall LCST is about 45 °C. Heating causes the surface contraction of the capsule wall to intensify, the micropores in the capsule wall to increase, the release amount to increase and the release rate per unit time to increase. The release time increases proportionally with the increase in capsule wall thickness. When the release time is the same, an alkaline or acidic environment can improve the release rate of the nanocapsule. The effect of profile control and flooding is evaluated through different differential core models. The research shows that the controlled release micro/nanocapsule has a good environmental response and the internal components can be effectively controlled by adjusting the temperature or pH value. This research has shown that the nanocapsules have good application prospects in low-permeability heterogeneous reservoirs.

Global Epidemiological Patterns in the Burden of Main Non-Communicable Diseases, 1990-2019: Relationships With Socio-Demographic Index

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze spatio-temporal patterns of the global burden caused by main NCDs along the socio-economic development. Methods: We extracted relevant data from GBD 2019. The estimated annual percentage changes, quantile regression and limited cubic splines were adopted to estimate temporal trends and relationships with socio-demographic index. Results: NCDs accounted for 74.36% of global all-cause deaths in 2019. The main NCDs diseases were estimated for cardiovascular diseases, neoplasms, and chronic respiratory diseases, with deaths of 18.56 (17.08-19.72) million, 10.08 (9.41-10.66) million and 3.97 (3.58-4.30) million, respectively. The death burden of three diseases gradually decreased globally over time. Regional and sex variations existed worldwide. Besides, the death burden of CVD showed the inverted U-shaped associations with SDI, while neoplasms were positively correlated with SDI, and CRD showed the negative association. Conclusion: NCDs remain a crucial public health issue worldwide, though several favorable trends of CVD, neoplasms and CRD were observed. Regional and sex disparities still existed. Public health managers should execute more targeted programs to lessen NCDs burden, predominantly among lower SDI countries.

Multiomics Analysis of a DNAH5-Mutated PCD Organoid Model Revealed the Key Role of the TGF-β/BMP and Notch Pathways in Epithelial Differentiation and the Immune Response in DNAH5-Mutated Patients

Dynein axonemal heavy chain 5 (DNAH5) is the most mutated gene in primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), leading to abnormal cilia ultrastructure and function. Few studies have revealed the genetic characteristics and pathogenetic mechanisms of PCD caused by DNAH5 mutation. Here, we established a child PCD airway organoid directly from the bronchoscopic biopsy of a patient with the DNAH5 mutation. The motile cilia in the organoid were observed and could be stably maintained for an extended time. We further found abnormal ciliary function and a decreased immune response caused by the DNAH5 mutation through single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) and proteomic analyses. Additionally, the directed induction of the ciliated cells, regulated by TGF-β/BMP and the Notch pathway, also increased the expression of inflammatory cytokines. Taken together, these results demonstrated that the combination of multiomics analysis and organoid modelling could reveal the close connection between the immune response and the DNAH5 gene.

Efficacy of non-surgical periodontal treatment on patients with coronary artery disease: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

BACKGROUND

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is defined as one of the most common cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Periodontitis is one of the risk factors for CAD.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were carefully and thoroughly retrieved until October 2021. On the basis of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, eligible articles were selected strictly to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Using Cochran's Q statistic, Review Manager 5.4 and Stata 16, data were extracted, and a comprehensive analysis was carried out.

RESULTS

Six RCTs of 619 patients were included in this study, including 360 in the intervention group (IG) and 259 in the control group (CG). Meta-analysis showed significant difference for C-reactive protein (CRP) (1.20mg/L, 95% CI: 1.13 to 1.27, p < 0.00001) after non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT), but showed no significant difference for interleukin-6 (IL-6) (1.19mg/L, 95% CI: -1.03 to 3.40, p=0.29), flow-mediated dilation (FMD) (-1.64%, 95% CI: -4.95 to 1.67, p=0.33), triacylglycerol (TG) (-0.02mg/dL, 95% CI: -0.31 to 0.27, p=0.90), total cholesterol (TC) (0.04mg/dL, 95% CI: -0.25 to 0.33, p=0.90), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (0.00mg/dL, 95% CI: -0.29 to 0.29, p=0.99) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (0.11mg/dL, 95% CI: -0.18 to 0.40, p=0.46).

CONCLUSIONS

The impact of NSPT on the reduction of CRP in patients of CAD with periodontitis is significant. NSPT can be considered as an important preventive strategy for major cardiovascular events in CAD.

Trends in Deaths Attributable to Smoking in China, Japan, United Kingdom, and United States From 1990 to 2019

Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the long-term trends of deaths attributable smoking in China, Japan, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US).

Methods: Using 2000–2019 death data from Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019, we estimated age-period-cohort effects on smoking attributable mortality, and decomposed of differences in smoking-attributable deaths in 1990 and 2019 into demographic factors.

Results: From 1990 to 2019, smoking-attributable deaths increased in China, which was due to population growth and demographic aging. From 1990 to 2019, both age-standardized smoking attributable mortality rates trended downward across countries. Among four countries, age rate ratios (RRs) for smoking-attributable mortality increased with age, while period and cohort RRs decreased with year.

Conclusion: The age-standardized mortality rates, period effects and cohort effects of smoking attributable mortality in China, Japan, UK, and US have been declining in both sexes from 1990 to 2019, which suggests that smoke-free policies, help to quit tobacco use, improved health education, more accessible healthcare service, and increased taxes have been effective. Additionally, increased smoking attributable deaths in elderly should got more attention.

Burden of diabetes and kidney disease attributable to non-optimal temperature from 1990 to 2019: A systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

INTRODUCTION

This study quantitatively described the disease burden of diabetes and kidney disease attributable to non-optimal temperatures and explored the influencing factors.

METHODS

We quantitatively described the mortality burden of diabetes and kidney disease attributable to non-optimal temperatures in six countries (China, USA, South Africa, Australia, Iraq, Portugal), and compare trends in mortality in six countries from 1990 to 2019. We used the APC model to analyse age, period, and cohort effects on mortality in six countries. We used restricted cubic splines and quantile regression to analyse the association of SDI with mortality and YLL using data from 21 regions in the world.

RESULTS

The mortality rates of diabetes and kidney disease in the six countries in 2019 were 1.72% (Australia), 1.83% (China), 2.99% (USA), 3% (Portugal), 7.45% (South Africa) and 8.71% (Iraq) attributable to non-optimal temperatures. Cold was more harmful than heat. The mortality, YLLs of diabetes and kidney disease of male were higher than females. The mortality rate showed an upwards trend with age. The period effect had little changes or showed a slight upwards trend. The cohort effect showed a downwards trend. The regions with higher mortality or YLLs rates were mainly had SDI values of 0.45-0.80.

CONCLUSIONS

Among the death burdens of diabetes and kidney disease attributed to non-optimal temperatures, cold had a greater burden than heat. The burden of death was affected by sex, age, period, cohort, and SDI.

Comparison of trend in chronic kidney disease burden between China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) caused heavy burden globally. This study aimed to investigate the patterns and temporal variations in the burden of CKD in China, Japan, the United Kingdom (U.K.), and the United States (U.S.) from 1990 to 2019, and decompose the difference in CKD disease burden between 1990 and 2019 into demographic factors. From 1990 to 2019, although the age-standardized rate (ASR) of incidence remained stable in the four countries, and the ASR of mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) have declined in four countries (except for the increase in U.S.), the number of CKD incidence, death, and DALY increased significantly. The average disease burden per case in U.S. has increased between 1990 and 2019, with an increasing proportion of death-related disease burden. For the CKD due to diabetes and hypertension, whose incidences accounted for < 25% of the total CKD, while it accounts for more than 70% of the deaths (except in U.K. with 54.14% in women and 51.75% in men). CKD due to diabetes and hypertension should be the focus of CKD prevention and control. Considering the high treatment costs of CKD and ESRD, it is urgent and necessary to transform CKD treatment into primary and secondary prevention.

Eliciting national and subnational sets of disability weights in mainland China: Findings from the Chinese disability weight measurement study

BACKGROUND

The disability weight (DW) quantifies the severity of health states from disease sequela and is a pivotal parameter for disease burden calculation. We conducted a national and subnational DW measurement in China.

METHODS

In 2020-2021, we conducted a web-based survey to assess DWs for 206 health states in 31 Chinese provinces targeting health workers via professional networks. We fielded questions of paired comparison (PC) and population health equivalence (PHE). The PC data were analysed by probit regression analysis, and the regression results were anchored by results from the PHE responses on the DW scale between 0 (no loss of health) and 1 (health loss equivalent to death).

FINDINGS

We used PC responses from 468,541 respondents to estimate DWs of health states. Eight of 11 domains of health had significantly negative coefficients in the regression of the difference between Chinese and Global Burden of Disease (GBD) DWs, suggesting lower DW values for health states with mention of these domains in their lay description. We noted considerable heterogeneity within domains, however. After applying these Chinese DWs to the 2019 GBD estimates for China, total years lived with disability (YLDs) increased by 14·9% to 177 million despite lower estimates for musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular diseases, mental disorders, diabetes and chronic kidney disease. The lower estimates of YLDs for these conditions were more than offset by higher estimates of common, low-severity conditions.

INTERPRETATION

The differences between the GBD and Chinese DWs suggest that there might be some contextual factors influencing the valuation of health states. While the reduced estimates for mental disorders, alcohol use disorder, and dementia could hint at a culturally different valuation of these conditions in China, the much greater shifts in YLDs from low-severity conditions more likely reflects methodological difficulty to distinguish between health states that vary a little in absolute DW value but a lot in relative terms.

Non-pharmacological interventions of travel restrictions and cancelation of public events had a major reductive mortality affect during pre-vaccination coronavirus disease 2019 period

Background

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a severe acute respiratory disease that poses a continuous threat to global public health. Many non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) have been implemented to control the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of various NPIs on COVID-19 mortality during pre-vaccination and vaccination periods.

Methods

The COVID-19 data used in this study comes from Our World in Data, we used the Oxford Strict Index (OSI) and its five combination interventions as independent variables. The COVID-19 mortality date (MRT) was defined as a date when daily rate of 0.02 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 population in a country was reached, and the COVID-19 vaccination date (VRT) was defined as people vaccinated reaching 70%. Linear regression and random forest models were used to estimate the impact of various NPI implementation interventions during pre-vaccination and vaccination periods. The performance of models was assessed among others with Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) explaining the prediction capability of the model.

Results

During the pre-vaccination period, the various NPIs had strong protective effect. When the COVID-19 MRT was reached, for every unit increase in OSI, the cumulative mortality as of June 30, 2020 decreased by 0.71 deaths per 100,000 people. Restrictions in travel (SHAP 1.68) and cancelation of public events and gatherings (1.37) had major reducing effect on COVID-19 mortality, while staying at home (0.26) and school and workplace closure (0.26) had less effect. Post vaccination period, the effects of NPI reduced significantly: cancelation of public events and gatherings (0.25), staying at home (0.22), restrictions in travel (0.14), and school and workplace closure (0.06).

Conclusion

Continued efforts are still needed to promote vaccination to build sufficient immunity to COVID-19 in the population. Until herd immunity is achieved, NPI is still important for COVID-19 prevention and control. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the stringency of NPI implementation had a significant negative association with COVID-19 mortality; however, this association was no longer significant after the vaccination rate reached 70%. As vaccination progresses, “cancelation of public events and gatherings” become more important for COVID-19 mortality.

EGR2 is a hub-gene in myocardial infarction and aggravates inflammation and apoptosis in hypoxia-induced cardiomyocytes

Background

Myocardial infarction (MI) is characterized by coronary artery occlusion, ischemia and hypoxia of myocardial cells, leading to irreversible myocardial damage. Therefore, it is urgent to explore the potential mechanism of myocardial injury during the MI process to develop effective therapies for myocardial cell rescue.

Methods

We downloaded the GSE71906 dataset from GEO DataSets, and the R software was used to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in mouse heart tissues of MI and sham controls. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment were performed to understand the significantly activated signaling pathways in MI. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed to highlight the hub genes in DEGs. The Western Blot, qRT-PCR and TUNEL staining were used to explore the function of hub gene in hypoxia-induced cardiomyocytes in vitro.

Results

A total of 235 DEGs were identified in GSE71906 dataset. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that the upregulated genes were primarily associated with the inflammatory response and apoptosis. 20 hub genes were identified in PPI network, and the early growth response 2 (EGR2) was highlighted. In vitro. We confirmed the EGR2 was upregulated induced by hypoxia and revealed the upregulated EGR2 aggravates pro-inflammation and pro-apoptotic genes expression. In addition, EGR2 knockout mitigates hypoxia-induced inflammation and apoptosis in cardiomyocytes.

Conclusion

The present study identified the EGR2 was a hub gene in myocardial damage during MI process, the excessive EGR2 aggravates hypoxia-induced myocardial damage by accelerating inflammation and apoptosis in vitro. Therefore, targeting EGR2 offers a potential pharmacological strategy for myocardial cell rescue in MI.

[Multimodality-based super-resolution reconstruction for routine brain magnetic resonance images]

OBJECTIVE

To propose a multi-modality-based super-resolution synthesis model for reconstruction of routine brain magnetic resonance images (MRI) with a low resolution and a high thickness into high-resolution images.

METHODS

Based on real paired low-high resolution MRI data (2D T1, 2D T2 FLAIR and 3D T1), a structure-constrained image mapping network was used to extract important features from the images with different modalities including the whole T1 and subcortical regions of T2 FLAIR to reconstruct T1 images with higher resolutions. The gray scale intensity and structural similarities between the super-resolution images and high-resolution images were used to enhance the reconstruction performance. We used the anatomical information acquired from segment maps of the super-resolution T1 image and the ground truth by a segmentation tool as a significant constraint for adaptive learning of the intrinsic tissue structure characteristics of the brain to improve the reconstruction performance of the model.

RESULTS

Our method showed the performance on the testing dataset than other methods with an average PSNR of 33.11 and SSIM of 0.996. The anatomical structure of the brain including the sulcus, gyrus, and subcortex were all reconstructed clearly using the proposed method, which also greatly enhanced the precision of MSCSR for brain volume measurement.

CONCLUSION

The proposed MSCSR model shows excellent performance for reconstructing super-resolution brain MR images based on the information of brain tissue structure and multimodality MR images.

Research on Percolation Characteristics of a JANUS Nanoflooding Crude Oil System in Porous Media

According to the research status of low-permeability reservoir development, in order to find an intelligent and efficient displacement method, a Janus smart nanocapsule (embedding nanomaterials with surfactant function into the polymer) is developed in this paper. There are two kinds of phase fluids in the migration of porous media, the initial Janus intelligent microcapsule slow-release liquid (dissolved and undissolved AP-g-PNIPAAM and Janus functional particle ternary dispersion) and the later AP-g-PNIPAAM and Janus functional particle binary dispersion. Comprehensively, using the indoor oil displacement experiment, the seepage characteristics of the Janus smart nanocapsule (JSNC) in porous media are studied, and their macro and micro oil displacement mechanisms are revealed. Research shows that Janus intelligent microcapsules have good mobility control ability in low-permeability heterogeneous reservoirs. The displacement performance of stepped differential pressure shows that the displacement medium can expand the swept volume. The research results presented can show that the JSNC oil displacement system has great application potential for the development of low-permeability reservoirs.

Quantitative Collateral Assessment on CTP in the Prediction of Stroke Etiology

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Patients with stroke etiology of large-artery atherosclerosis were thought to have better collateral circulation compared with patients with other stroke etiologies. We aimed to investigate the association between stroke etiology and collateral circulation with a new quantitative collateral assessment method.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This retrospective study reviewed data from consecutive patients with proximal anterior artery occlusion who underwent CTP before reperfusion therapy. CBF maps were derived from CTP. A new indicator, maximum CBF of collateral vessels within the Sylvian fissure (cCBF_max), was applied to quantitatively assess the collateral status. The relationship between collateral status and stroke etiology was investigated.

RESULTS

A total of 296 patients were finally analyzed. The median cCBF_max was significantly higher in patients with large-artery atherosclerosis than in those without it (92 [interquartile range, 65-123] mL/100 g/min versus 62 [interquartile range, 46-82] mL/100 g/min; P < .001). Multivariable analysis revealed that a higher cCBF_max score was independently associated with large-artery atherosclerosis etiology (OR, 1.010; 95% CI, 1.002-1.018; P = .017) after adjustment. The area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity of the final model in predicting the etiology of large-artery atherosclerosis were 0.870, 89.7%, and 75.2%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with large-artery atherosclerosis had a more adequate collateral perfusion supply with the new quantitative collateral assessment. The new quantitative collateral measurement might contribute to the prediction of stroke etiology in the acute clinical scenario for patients with acute ischemic stroke.

Association of Serum 25(OH)D, Cadmium, CRP With All-Cause, Cause-Specific Mortality: A Prospective Cohort Study

Introduction

To explore the relationship between serum 25(OH)D, cadmium, and CRP with all-cause mortality among people in diabetic and non-diabetic.

Methods

This study used data from the NHANES (2001–2010). Cox regression was used to analyze the relationship between Serum 25(OH)D, cadmium, CRP, and all-cause, cause-specific mortality. We used restricted cubic splines to explore the dose-response relationship between serum 25(OH)D, cadmium, CRP, and all-cause mortality.

Results

During a mean follow-up of 9.1 years, the study included 20,221 participants, 2,945 people with diabetes, and 17,276 people without diabetes. Compared with serum 25(OH)D deficiency group in diabetic patients, the sufficient serum 25(OH)D group was associated with lower all-cause mortality (HR = 0.41, 95%CI 0.28-0.60, P < 0.001) and cardiovascular mortality (HR = 0.46, 95%CI 0.22–0.95, P = 0.04). Compared with the low cadmium group, the high cadmium group was associated with higher all-cause mortality (HR = 1.49, 95%CI 1.06–2.09, P = 0.02). Compared with the low CRP group, the high CRP group was associated with higher all-cause mortality (HR = 1.65, 95%CI 1.24–2.19, P = 0.001) and cancer mortality (HR = 3.25, 95%CI 1.82–5.80, P < 0.001). Restricted cubic splines analysis showed a significant nonlinear association between serum 25(OH)D (P-nonlinearity P < 0.001), cadmium (P-nonlinearity = 0.002), CRP (P-nonlinearity = 0.003), and HR for all-cause mortality risk in diabetic patients. The results were similar among non-diabetic patients, but with different levels of risk. Sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis presented the results of population studies with different follow-up times, different genders and ages.

Conclusions

In diabetic patients, serum 25(OH)D, cadmium, and CRP were related to all-cause mortality; serum 25(OH)D was related to cardiovascular mortality; CRP was related to cancer mortality. The results were similar among non-diabetic patients, but with different levels of risk.

[Impact of probiotics on the lung development of Bama minipig after premature birth]

Objectives: To examine the impact of probiotics on the lung development of preterm birth of Bama pig. Methods: From April 2020 to October 2021, this animal experimental research was performed by setting up preterm (birth at gestation 104 d), full-term (birth at gestation 113 d), preterm with probiotics (birth at gestation 104 d treated with probiotics given at 3 d after birth), and full-term with probiotics (birth at gestation 113 d treated with probiotics given at 3 d after birth) groups and using the preterm Bama minipig model, the body weights were recorded and lung, ileum, and intestinal content samples were collected at birth, 4 days, 9 days, and 21 days after births of the piglets in preterm and full-term groups, the same samples were collected on 9 days after births of the piglets in preterm with probiotics and full-term with probiotics groups. The body weight and radial alveolar counts (RAC) were compared to evaluate the lung development of the piglets. The lengths of ileal villus were compared to evaluate the development of ileum. The composition structures of bacteria in ileum were analyzed by 16 S rRNA sequencing. The statistical analyses between different groups were performed by t test. Results: There were totally 30 piglets (16 female piglets and 14 male piglets) involving 12 piglets in preterm and full-term groups respectively and 3 piglets in preterm with probiotics and full-term with probiotics groups respectively. The body weights of the piglets in preterm group were lower than those in full-term group at 4, 9 and 21 d after birth ((507±27) vs. (694±56) g, (620±35) vs. (1 092±154) g, (1 660±210) vs. (2 960±418) g,t=2.96, 2.99, 2.78, all P<0.05). The alveolarization of the preterm piglets at 9 days after birth was significantly lower than that of the full-term piglets at the equivalent time point (4.00±0.29 vs. 6.11±0.35, t=4.64, P<0.01). The bacteria genus with the highest abundance in ileum were all different between the preterm and the full-term groups at 4, 9 and 21 d after birth (4 d Escherichia-Shigella (26.63%) and Enterococcus (30.48%) respectively;9 d Turicibacter (35.94%) and Lactobacillus (27.33%) respectively;21 d Escherichia-Shigella (28.02%) and Lactobacillus (46.29%) respectively). The heights of ileal villus of the preterm piglets at 9 d after birth were significantly lower than those of the full-term minipigs at the equivalent time point ((297±21) vs. (411±32) μm, t=3.01, P=0.007).There were both no differences in the body weight and alveolarization ((692±36) vs. (767±67) g, 5.44±0.34 vs. 5.89±0.26, t=0.74, 1.04, both P>0.05) between the piglets in preterm with probiotics group and those in full-term with probiotics group. Turicibacter was the dominant genus in the piglets of both preterm with probiotics and the full-term with probiotics groups. The heights of ileal villus of the piglets in preterm with probiotics group were significantly longer that those of the piglets in preterm group ((371±13) vs. (297±21) μm, t=3.04, P=0.006), and were both not significantly different from those of the piglets in full-term with probiotics group and full-term group ((371±13) vs. (338±12) and (411±32) μm, t=1.90, 1.15, both P>0.05). Conclusions: Premature birth could impact the lung alveolarization of piglets. The probiotics could improve the lung alveolarization of preterm minipigs by promoting the development of ileum.

The Protective Effects of Mogroside V Against Neuronal Damages by Attenuating Mitochondrial Dysfunction via Upregulating Sirtuin3

Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are thought to play a dominant role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Mogroside V (MV), extracted from Siraitia grosvenorii, exhibits antioxidant-like activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the function of MV in neuroprotection in PD and to reveal its mechanism of action. To that end, we firstly set up mice models of PD with unilateral striatum injection of 0.25 mg/kg rotenone (Rot) and co-treated with 2.5 mg/kg, 5 mg/kg, and 10 mg/kg MV by gavage. Results showed that Rot-induced motor impairments and dopaminergic neuronal damage were reversed by treatment of 10 mg/kg MV. Then, we established cellular models of PD using Rot-treated SH-SY5Y cells, which were divided into six groups, including control, Rot, and co-enzyme Q10 (CQ10), as well as MV groups, MV25, MV50, and MV100 treated with 25 μM, 50 μM, and 100 μM MV doses, respectively. Results demonstrated that MV effectively attenuates Rot neurotoxicity through a ROS-related intrinsic mitochondrial pathway. MV reduced overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), recovered the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and increased the oxygen consumption rate and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production in a dose-dependent manner. Hence, treatment with MV led to a reduction in the number of apoptotic cells, as reflected by Annexin-V/propidium iodide co-staining using flow cytometry and TdT-mediated dUTP Nick-End Labeling (TUNEL) assay. In addition, the Sirtuin3 (SIRT3) protein level and activity were decreased upon exposure to Rot both in substantia nigra (SN) of mice and SH-SY5Y cells. SIRT3 impairment hyperacetylated a key mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2). MV alleviates SIRT3 and SOD2 molecular changes. However, after successfully inhibiting SIRT3 by its specific inhibitor 3-1H-1, 2, 3-triazol-4-yl pyridine (3TYP), MV was not able to reduce ROS levels, reverse abnormal MMP, or decrease apoptotic cells. Motor impairments and dopaminergic neuronal injury in the SN were alleviated with the oral administration of MV in Rot-treated PD mice, indicating a relationship between protection against defective motility and preservation of dopaminergic neurons. Therefore, we conclude that MV can alleviate Rot-induced neurotoxicity in a PD model, and that SIRT3 may be an important regulator in the protection of MV.

Emergency Preparedness and Management of Mobile Cabin Hospitals in China During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The healthcare systems in China and globally have faced serious challenges during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The shortage of beds in traditional hospitals has exacerbated the threat of COVID-19. To increase the number of available beds, China implemented a special public health measure of opening mobile cabin hospitals. Mobile cabin hospitals, also called Fangcang shelter hospitals, refer to large-scale public venues such as indoor stadiums and exhibition centers converted to temporary hospitals. This study is a mini review of the practice of mobile cabin hospitals in China. The first part is regarding emergency preparedness, including site selection, conversion, layout, and zoning before opening the hospital, and the second is on hospital management, including organization management, management of nosocomial infections, information technology support, and material supply. This review provides some practical recommendations for countries that need mobile cabin hospitals to relieve the pressure of the pandemic on the healthcare systems.

What matters: non-pharmaceutical interventions for COVID-19 in Europe

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study is to describe the situation of COVID-19 in European countries and to identify important factors related to prevention and control.

METHODS

We obtained data from World Health Statistics 2020 and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). We calculated the Rt values of 51 countries in Europe under different prevention and control measures. We used lasso regression to screen factors associated with morbidity and mortality. For the selected variables, we used quantile regression to analyse the relevant influencing factors in countries with different levels of morbidity or mortality.

RESULTS

The government has a great influence on the change in Rt value through prevention and control measures. The most important factors for personal and group prevention and control are the mobility index, testing, the closure of educational facilities, restrictions on large-scale gatherings, and commercial restrictions. The number of ICU beds and doctors in medical resources are also key factors. Basic sanitation facilities, such as the proportion of safe drinking water, also have an impact on the COVID-19 epidemic.

CONCLUSIONS

We described the current status of COVID-19 in European countries. Our findings demonstrated key factors in individual and group prevention measures.

The Global Burden of Type 2 Diabetes Attributable to Tobacco: A Secondary Analysis From the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

OBJECTIVES

Growing epidemiological studies have reported the relationship between tobacco and health loss among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). This study aimed to explore the secular trend and spatial distribution of the T2D burden attributable to tobacco on a global scale to better understand regional disparities and judge the gap between current conditions and expectations.

METHODS

As a secondary analysis, we extracted data of tobacco-attributable T2D burden from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD). Joinpoint regression was adopted to determine the secular trend of age-standardized rates (ASR), with average annual percentage change (AAPC). Gaussian process regression (GPR) was used to explore the average expected relationship between ASRs and the socio-demographic index (SDI). Spatial autocorrelation was used to indicate if there is clustering of age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) with Moran's I value. Multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) was to investigate the spatial distribution and scales of influencing factors in ASDR attributable to tobacco, with the regression coefficients for each influencing factor among 204 countries.

RESULTS

Tobacco posed a challenge to global T2D health, particularly for the elderly and men from lower SDI regions. For women, mortality attributable to secondhand smoke was higher than smoking. A downward trend in age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) of T2D attributable to tobacco was observed (AAPCs= -0.24; 95% CI -0.30 to -0.18), while the ASDR increased globally since 1990 (AAPCs= 0.19; 0.11 to 0.27). Oceania, Southern Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia had the highest ASMRs and ASDRs, exceeding expectations based on the SDI. Also, "high-high" clusters were mainly observed in South Africa and Southeast Asian countries, which means a high-ASDR country is surrounded by high-ASDR neighborhoods in the above areas. According to MGWR model, smoking prevalence was the most sensitive influencing factor, with regression coefficients from 0.15 to 1.80.

CONCLUSION

The tobacco-attributable burden of T2D should be considered as an important health issue, especially in low-middle and middle-SDI regions. Meanwhile, secondhand smoke posed a greater risk to women. Regional disparities existed, with hot spots mainly concentrated in South Africa and Southeast Asian countries.
