Abstract
The plant-parasitic root-knot nematode Meloidogyne exigua causes significant damage and is an important threat in Coffea arabica plantations. The utilization of plant-beneficial microbes as biological control agents against sedentary endoparasitic nematodes has been a longstanding strategy. However, their application in field conditions to control root-knot nematodes and their interaction with the rhizospheric microbiota of coffee plants remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the effects of biological control agent-based bioproducts and a chemical nematicide, used in various combinations, on the control of root-knot nematodes and the profiling of the coffee plant rhizomicrobiome in a field trial. The commercially available biological products, including Trichoderma asperellum URM 5911 (Quality), Bacillus subtilis UFPEDA 764 (Rizos), Bacillus methylotrophicus UFPEDA 20 (Onix), and nematicide Cadusafos (Rugby), were applied to adult coffee plants. The population of second-stage juveniles (J2) and eggs, as well as plant yield, were evaluated over three consecutive years. However, no significant differences were observed between the control group and the groups treated with bioproducts and the nematicide. Furthermore, the diversity and community composition of bacteria, fungi, and eukaryotes in the rhizosphere soil of bioproduct-treated plants were evaluated. The dominant phyla identified in the 16 S, ITS2, and 18 S communities included Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Cercozoa in both consecutive years. There were no significant differences detected in the Shannon diversity of 16 S, ITS2, and 18 S communities between the years of data. The application of a combination of T. asperellum, B. subtilis, and B. methylotrophicus, as well as the use of Cadusafos alone and in combination with T. asperellum, B. subtilis, and B. methylotrophicus, resulted in a significant reduction (26.08%, 39.13%, and 21.73%, respectively) in the relative abundance of Fusarium spp. Moreover, the relative abundance of Trichoderma spp. significantly increased by 500%, 200%, and 100% at the genus level, respectively, compared to the control treatment. By constructing a co-occurrence network, we discovered a complex network structure among the species in all the bioproduct-treated groups. However, our findings indicate that the introduction of exogenous beneficial microbes into field conditions was unable to modulate the existing microbiota significantly. These findings suggest that the applied bioproducts had no significant impact on the reshaping of the overall microbial diversity in the rhizosphere microbiome but rather recruited selected microrganisms and assured net return to the grower. The results underscore the intricate nature of the rhizosphere microbiome and suggest the necessity for alternate biocontrol strategies and a re-evaluation of agricultural practices to improve nematode control by aligning with the complex ecological interactions in the rhizosphere.

Abstract
The ever-growing influence of technology in our lives has led to an increasing interest in the development of smart electronic devices to interrogate and control biological systems. Recently, redox-mediated electrogenetics introduced a novel avenue that enables direct bioelectronic control at the genetic level. In this review, we discuss recent advances in methodologies for bioelectronic control, ranging from electrical stimulation to engineering efforts that allow traditionally unexcitable cells to be electrically 'programmable.' Alongside ion-transport signaling, we suggest redox as a route for rational engineering because it is a native form of electronic communication in biology. Using redox as a common language allows the interfacing of electronics and biology. This newfound connection opens a gateway of possibilities for next-generation bioelectronic tools.

Abstract
A wide range of abiotic and biotic stresses adversely affect plant's growth and production. Under stress, one of the main responses of plants is the modulation of exudates excreted in the rhizosphere, which consequently leads to alterations in the resident microbiota. Thus, the exudates discharged into the rhizospheric environment play a preponderant role in the association and formation of plant-microbe interactions. In this review, we aimed to provide a synthesis of the latest and most pertinent literature on the diverse biochemical and structural compositions of plant root exudates. Also, this work investigates into their multifaceted role in microbial nutrition and intricate signaling processes within the rhizosphere, which includes quorum-sensing molecules. Specifically, it explores the contributions of low molecular weight compounds, such as carbohydrates, phenolics, organic acids, amino acids, and secondary metabolites, as well as the significance of high molecular weight compounds, including proteins and polysaccharides. It also discusses the state-of-the-art omics strategies that unveil the vital role of root exudates in plant-microbiome interactions, including defense against pathogens like nematodes and fungi. We propose multiple challenges and perspectives, including exploiting plant root exudates for host-mediated microbiome engineering. In this discourse, root exudates and their derived interactions with the rhizospheric microbiota should receive greater attention due to their positive influence on plant health and stress mitigation.

Abstract
This study investigated the impact of endogenous sodium and potassium ions in plants on the quality of alfalfa silage, as well as the stability of bacterial communities during fermentation. Silage was produced from the fermented alfalfa, and the chemical composition, fermentation characteristics, and microbiome were analyzed to understand their interplay and impact on silage fermentation quality. The alfalfa was cultivated under salt stress with the following: (a) soil content of <1‰ (CK); (b) 1‰-2‰ (LP); (c) 2‰-3‰ (MP); (d) 3‰-4‰ (HP). The results revealed that the pH of silage was negatively correlated with the lactic acid content. With the increase of lactic acid (LA) content increased (26.3-51.0 g/kg DM), the pH value decreased (4.9-5.3). With the increase of salt stress, the content of Na+ in silage increased (2.2-5.4 g/kg DM). The presence of endogenous Na+ and K+ ions in plants significantly affected the quality of alfalfa silage and the dynamics of bacterial communities during fermentation. Increased salt stress led to changes in microbial composition, with Lactococcus and Pantoea showing a gradual increase in abundance, especially under high salt stress. Low pH inhibited the growth of certain bacterial genera, such as Pantoea and Pediococcus. The abundance of Escherichia-Shigella and Comamonas negatively correlated with crude protein (CP) content, while Enterococcus and Lactococcus exhibited a positive correlation. Furthermore, the accumulation of endogenous Na+ in alfalfa under salt stress suppressed bacterial proliferation, thereby reducing protein degradation during fermentation. The pH of the silage was high, and the LA content was also high. Silages from alfalfa under higher salt stress had higher Na+ content. The alpha diversity of bacterial communities in alfalfa silages showed distinct patterns. Desirable genera like Lactococcus and Lactobacillus predominated in silages produced from alfalfa under salt stress, resulting in better fermentation quality.

Abstract
Microelectronic devices can directly communicate with biology, as electronic information can be transmitted via redox reactions within biological systems. By engineering biology's native redox networks, we enable electronic interrogation and control of biological systems at several hierarchical levels: proteins, cells, and cell consortia. First, electro-biofabrication facilitates on-device biological component assembly. Then, electrode-actuated redox data transmission and redox-linked synthetic biology allows programming of enzyme activity and closed-loop electrogenetic control of cellular function. Specifically, horseradish peroxidase is assembled onto interdigitated electrodes where electrode-generated hydrogen peroxide controls its activity. E. coli's stress response regulon, oxyRS, is rewired to enable algorithm-based feedback control of gene expression, including an eCRISPR module that switches cell-cell quorum sensing communication from one autoinducer to another-creating an electronically controlled 'bilingual' cell. Then, these disparate redox-guided devices are wirelessly connected, enabling real-time communication and user-based control. We suggest these methodologies will help us to better understand and develop sophisticated control for biology.

Abstract
Monilinia laxa, a notorious fungal pathogen responsible for the devastating brown rot disease afflicting apples, wreaks havoc in both orchards and storage facilities, precipitating substantial economic losses. Currently, chemical methods represent the primary means of controlling this pathogen in warehouses. However, this study sought to explore an alternative approach by harnessing the biocontrol potential of bacterial isolates against brown rot in apple trees. A total of 72 bacterial isolates were successfully obtained from the apple tree rhizosphere and subjected to initial screening via co-cultivation with the pathogen. Notably, eight bacterial isolates demonstrated remarkable efficacy, reducing the mycelial growth of the pathogen from 68.75 to 9.25%. These isolates were subsequently characterized based on phenotypic traits, biochemical properties, and 16S rRNA gene amplification. Furthermore, we investigated these isolates' production capacity with respect to two enzymes, namely, protease and chitinase, and evaluated their efficacy in disease control. Through phenotypic, biochemical, and 16S rRNA gene-sequencing analyses, the bacterial isolates were identified as Serratia marcescens, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus succinus, and Pseudomonas baetica. In dual culture assays incorporating M. laxa, S. marcescens and S. succinus exhibited the most potent degree of mycelial growth inhibition, achieving 68.75 and 9.25% reductions, respectively. All the bacterial isolates displayed significant chitinase and protease activities. Quantitative assessment of chitinase activity revealed the highest levels in strains AP5 and AP13, with values of 1.47 and 1.36 U/mL, respectively. Similarly, AP13 and AP6 exhibited the highest protease activity, with maximal enzyme production levels reaching 1.3 and 1.2 U/mL, respectively. In apple disease control assays, S. marcescens and S. succinus strains exhibited disease severity values of 12.34% and 61.66% (DS), respectively, highlighting their contrasting efficacy in mitigating disease infecting apple fruits. These findings underscore the immense potential of the selected bacterial strains with regard to serving as biocontrol agents for combatting brown rot disease in apple trees, thus paving the way for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to chemical interventions.

Abstract
Some agronomic practices not only promote the development of crop roots and increase overall plant performance but also affect colonisation by rhizosphere microorganisms. However, the composition and temporal dynamics of the tobacco rhizosphere microbiota under different root-promoting practices are poorly understood. Here, we characterised the tobacco rhizosphere microbiota at the knee-high, vigorous growing, and maturity stages under the application of potassium fulvic acid (PFA), γ-Polyglutamic acid (PGA), soymilk root irrigation (SRI), and conventional fertilization (CK) and its correlation with root characteristics and soil nutrients. The results showed that three root-promoting practices notably improved the dry and fresh root weights. Total nitrogen and phosphorus, available phosphorus and potassium, and organic matter contents in the rhizosphere markedly increased at the vigorous growing stage. The rhizosphere microbiota was changed through root-promoting practices. However, with tobacco growth, the change of rhizosphere microbiota showed a pattern of slow first and then fast and the microbiota of different treatments gradually approached. SRI reduced plant-pathogenic fungi but increased chemoheterotrophic and phototrophic bacteria, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. PFA and PGA markedly increased arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi at the knee-high stage, which benefitted tobacco nutrient absorption. The correlation between rhizosphere microorganisms and environmental factors varied at different growth stages. Notably, the rhizosphere microbiota was more sensitive to environmental factors at the vigorous growing stage, and the interactions were more complex than in other stages. Furthermore, a variance partitioning analysis showed that the influence of root-soil interaction on the rhizosphere microbiota increased with tobacco growth. Overall, all three root-promoting practices could improve root characteristics, rhizosphere nutrient, and rhizosphere microbiota to varying degrees and increase the tobacco biomass, among which PGA had the most obvious effect and most suitable for tobacco cultivation. Our findings revealed the role of root-promoting practices in shaping the rhizosphere microbiota during plant growth and elucidated the assembly patterns and environmental drivers of crop rhizosphere microbiota driven by the application of root-promoting practices in agricultural production.

Abstract
Every organism on the earth maintains some kind of interaction with its neighbours. As plants are sessile, they sense the varied above-ground and below-ground environmental stimuli and decipher these dialogues to the below-ground microbes and neighbouring plants via root exudates as chemical signals resulting in the modulation of the rhizospheric microbial community. The composition of root exudates depends upon the host genotype, environmental cues, and interaction of plants with other biotic factors. Crosstalk of plants with biotic agents such as herbivores, microbes, and neighbouring plants can change host plant root exudate composition, which may permit either positive or negative interactions to generate a battlefield in the rhizosphere. Compatible microbes utilize the plant carbon sources as their organic nutrients and show robust co-evolutionary changes in changing circumstances. In this review, we have mainly focused on the different biotic factors responsible for the synthesis of alternative root exudate composition leading to the modulation of rhizosphere microbiota. Understanding the stress-induced root exudate composition and resulting change in microbial community can help us to devise strategies in engineering plant microbiomes to enhance plant adaptive capabilities in a stressful environment.

Abstract
Reduction in soil fertility and depletion of natural resources due to current intensive agricultural practices along with climate changes are the major constraints for crop productivity and global food security. Diverse microbial populations' inhabiting the soil and rhizosphere participate in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and thereby, improve soil fertility and plant health, and reduce the adverse impact of synthetic fertilizers on the environment. Sulphur is 4th most common crucial macronutrient required by all organisms including plants, animals, humans and microorganisms. Effective strategies are required to enhance sulphur content in crops for minimizing adverse effects of sulphur deficiency on plants and humans. Various microorganisms are involved in sulphur cycling in soil through oxidation, reduction, mineralization, and immobilization, and volatalization processes of diverse sulphur compounds. Some microorganisms possess the unique ability to oxidize sulphur compounds into plant utilizable sulphate (SO42-) form. Considering the importance of sulphur as a nutrient for crops, many bacteria and fungi involved in sulphur cycling have been characterized from soil and rhizosphere. Some of these microbes have been found to positively affect plant growth and crop yield through multiple mechanisms including the enhanced mobilization of nutrients in soils (i.e., sulphate, phosphorus and nitrogen), production of growth-promoting hormones, inhibition of phytopathogens, protection against oxidative damage and mitigation of abiotic stresses. Application of these beneficial microbes as biofertilizers may reduce the conventional fertilizer application in soils. However, large-scale, well-designed, and long-term field trials are necessary to recommend the use of these microbes for increasing nutrient availability for growth and yield of crop plants. This review discusses the current knowledge regarding sulphur deficiency symptoms in plants, biogeochemical cycling of sulphur and inoculation effects of sulphur oxidizing microbes in improving plant biomass and crop yield in different crops.

Abstract
Rhizosphere microbiome is a dynamic and complex zone of microbial communities. This complex plant-associated microbial community, usually regarded as the plant's second genome, plays a crucial role in plant health. It is unquestioned that plant microbiome collectively contributes to plant growth and fitness. It also provides a safeguard from plant pathogens, and induces tolerance in the host against abiotic stressors. The revolution in omics, gene-editing and sequencing tools have somehow led to unravel the compositions and latent interactions between plants and microbes. Similarly, besides standard practices, many biotechnological, (bio)chemical and ecological methods have also been proposed. Such platforms have been solely dedicated to engineer the complex microbiome by untangling the potential barriers, and to achieve better agriculture output. Yet, several limitations, for example, the biological obstacles, abiotic constraints and molecular tools that capably impact plant microbiome engineering and functionality, remained unaddressed problems. In this review, we provide a holistic overview of plant microbiome composition, complexities, and major challenges in plant microbiome engineering. Then, we unearthed all inevitable abiotic factors that serve as bottlenecks by discouraging plant microbiome engineering and functionality. Lastly, by exploring the inherent role of micro/macrofauna, we propose economic and eco-friendly strategies that could be harnessed sustainably and biotechnologically for resilient plant microbiome engineering.
