Abstract
BACKGROUND Pyrethroid pesticides cause abnormalities in the dopamine system and produce an ADHD phenotype in animal models, with effects accentuated in males versus females. However, data regarding behavioral effects of pyrethroid exposure in children is limited. We examined the association between pyrethroid pesticide exposure and ADHD in a nationally representative sample of US children, and tested whether this association differs by sex. METHODS Data are from 8-15 year old participants (N = 687) in the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Exposure was assessed using concurrent urinary levels of the pyrethroid metabolite 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA). ADHD was defined by either meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition criteria on the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC) or caregiver report of a prior diagnosis. ADHD symptom counts were determined via the DISC. Multivariable logistic regression examined the link between pyrethroid exposure and ADHD, and poisson regression investigated the link between exposure and ADHD symptom counts. RESULTS Children with urinary 3-PBA above the limit of detection (LOD) were twice as likely to have ADHD compared with those below the LOD (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.42; 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.06, 5.57). Hyperactive-impulsive symptoms increased by 50 % for every 10-fold increase in 3-PBA levels (adjusted count ratio 1.50; 95 % CI 1.03, 2.19); effects on inattention were not significant. We observed possible sex-specific effects: pyrethroid biomarkers were associated with increased odds of an ADHD diagnosis and number of ADHD symptoms for boys but not girls. CONCLUSIONS We found an association between increasing pyrethroid pesticide exposure and ADHD which may be stronger for hyperactive-impulsive symptoms compared to inattention and in boys compared to girls. Given the growing use of pyrethroid pesticides, these results may be of considerable public health import.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a major problem in children and adolescents, characterised by age-inappropriate levels of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, and is associated with long-term social, academic and mental health problems. The stimulant medications methylphenidate and amphetamine are the most frequently used treatments for ADHD, but these are not always effective and can be associated with side effects. Clinical and biochemical evidence suggests that deficiencies of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) could be related to ADHD. Children and adolescents with ADHD have been shown to have significantly lower plasma and blood concentrations of PUFA and, in particular, lower levels of omega-3 PUFA. These findings suggest that PUFA supplementation may reduce the attention and behaviour problems associated with ADHD. OBJECTIVES To compare the efficacy of PUFA to other forms of treatment or placebo in treating the symptoms of ADHD in children and adolescents. SEARCH METHODS We searched the following databases in August 2011: CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library 2011, Issue 2), MEDLINE (1948 to July Week 3, 2011), EMBASE (1980 to 2011 Week 29), PsycINFO (1806 to current), CINAHL (1937 to current), BIOSIS (1969 to 30 July 2011), Science Citation Index (1970 to 30 July 2011), Social Science Citation Index (1970 to 30 July 2011), Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Science (1990 to 30 July 2011), Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Social Science and Humanities (1990 to 30 July 2011), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (2011, Issue 7), DARE (2011 Issue 2), Dissertation Abstracts (via Dissertation Express) and the metaRegister of Controlled Trials (mRCT). In addition, we searched the following repositories for theses on 2 August 2011: DART, NTLTD and TROVE. We also checked reference lists of relevant studies and reviews for additional references. SELECTION CRITERIA Two review authors independently assessed the results of the database searches. We resolved any disagreements regarding the selection of studies through consensus or, if necessary, by consultation with a third member of the review team. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two members of the review team independently extracted details of participants and setting, interventions, methodology and outcome data. If differences were identified, we resolved them by consensus or referral to a third member of the team. We made all reasonable attempts to contact the authors where further clarification or missing data were needed. MAIN RESULTS We included 13 trials with 1011 participants in the review. After screening 366 references, we considered 23 relevant and obtained the full text for consideration. We excluded five papers and included 18 papers describing the 13 trials. Eight of the included trials had a parallel design: five compared an omega-3 PUFA supplement to placebo; two compared a combined omega-3 and omega-6 supplement to placebo, and one compared an omega-3 PUFA to a dietary supplement. Five of the included trials had a cross-over design: two compared combined omega-3/6 PUFA to placebo; two compared omega-6 PUFA with placebo; one compared omega-3 to omega-6 PUFA, and one compared omega-6 PUFA to dexamphetamine. Supplements were given for a period of between four and 16 weeks.There was a significantly higher likelihood of improvement in the group receiving omega-3/6 PUFA compared to placebo (two trials, 97 participants; risk ratio (RR) 2.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04 to 4.62). However, there were no statistically significant differences in parent-rated ADHD symptoms (five trials, 413 participants; standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.17, 95% CI -0.38 to 0.03); inattention (six trials, 469 participants; SMD -0.04, 95% CI -0.29 to 0.21) or hyperactivity/impulsivity (five trials, 416 participants; SMD -0.04, 95% CI -0.25 to 0.16) when all participants receiving PUFA supplements were compared to those receiving placebo.There were no statistically significant differences in teacher ratings of overall ADHD symptoms (four trials, 324 participants; SMD 0.05, 95% CI -0.18 to 0.27); inattention (three trials, 260 participants; SMD 0.26, 95% CI -0.22 to 0.74) or hyperactivity/impulsivity (three trials, 259 participants; SMD 0.10, 95% CI -0.16 to 0.35).There were also no differences between groups in behaviour, side effects or loss to follow-up.Overall, there were no other differences between groups for any other comparison. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Overall, there is little evidence that PUFA supplementation provides any benefit for the symptoms of ADHD in children and adolescents. The majority of data showed no benefit of PUFA supplementation, although there were some limited data that did show an improvement with combined omega-3 and omega-6 supplementation.It is important that future research addresses current weaknesses in this area, which include small sample sizes, variability of selection criteria, variability of the type and dosage of supplementation, short follow-up times and other methodological weaknesses.

Abstract
Information processing deficits are commonly found in psychiatric illnesses, while at the biochemical level serotonin seems to play a role in nearly all psychiatric disorders. Processing negativity (PN), mismatch negativity (MMN) and P300 amplitude are electrophysiological measures of information processing. The present study was designed to replicate and further extent the results of our initial study on the effects of a low dose of escitalopram (10 mg) on MMN, PN and P300 amplitude. In a randomised, double-blind, cross-over experiment, 20 healthy male volunteers received either a single, orally administered dose of 15 mg escitalopram (a highly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)) or placebo, after which their PN, MMN and P300 amplitude were assessed. Similar to our initial study with 10 mg escitalopram, 15 mg escitalopram significantly increased MMN, while it did not affect P300 amplitude. In contrast to our initial study, however, the currently higher dose of escitalopram did not increase PN. Results support the view that a broad range of increased serotonergic activity enhances MMN, while the relationship between serotonin and PN seems more complex. The current study does not support a serotonergic involvement in P300 amplitude.

Abstract
Dopamine regulation may play a role in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Visual contrast sensitivity has been proposed as a measure of retinal dopamine that may predict frontal lobe dopamine levels. Individuals with disorders involving dopamine dysregulation (e.g., Parkinson's disease, Phenylketonuria) have shown poor contrast sensitivity. In this study, 110 6- to 13-year-old children with and without ADHD completed a task measuring visual contrast sensitivity. As predicted, contrast sensitivity was significantly worse in children with ADHD-Combined Type than controls. Contrast sensitivity was significantly correlated with inattention and hyperactivity. However, unlike many neuropsychological studies of ADHD, only hyperactivity accounted for unique variance.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent behavioral disorder in children and the pathophysiology remains obscure. In addition to the pharmacotherapy, which is the primary treatment of ADHD, nutritional intervention may have a significant impact on ADHD symptoms. We studied lipid and lipoprotein profiles, fatty acid (FA) composition, and oxidant-antioxidant status in 37 pediatric ADHD patients and 35 healthy control subjects. Our results show that plasma triacylglycerols and phospholipids were lower, whereas free cholesterol, HDL, and apolipoprotein A-I were higher in ADHD patients compared with controls. The proportion of plasma EPA and DHA was higher, but that of oleic and alpha-linolenic (ALA) acids was lower. As expected from these findings, the proportions of both total saturates and polyunsaturates fatty acids (PUFA) were higher and lower, respectively, in ADHD patients than in controls, which led to a significant decrease in the PUFAs/saturates ratio. On the other hand, the ratios of eicosatrienoic acid to arachidonic acid and of palmitoleic acid to linoleic acid, established indexes of essential fatty acid (EFA) status remained unchanged revealing that EFA did not affect ADHD patients. Similarly, the activity of delta-6 desaturase, estimated by the ratio of 18:2(n-6)/20:4(n-6), was found unaffected, whereas ALA/EPA was diminished. Lessened lipid peroxidation was noted in ADHD subjects as documented by the diminished values of plasma malondialdehyde accompanied by increased concentrations of gamma-tocopherol. In conclusions, significant changes occur in the lipid and lipoprotein profiles, as well as in the oxidant-antioxidant status of ADHD patients, however, the FA distribution does not reflect n-3 FA deficiency.

Abstract
The degree of association between performance on a sustained attention task requiring visual discrimination and urinary excretion of catecholamine metabolites was examined in a cohort of 6- to 12-year-old children (n = 31) strictly selected and diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) according to DSM-IV and other strict criteria. Sustained visual attention and discrimination were measured using the Test of Variables of Attention (T.O.V.A.). Urinary excretion of dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) metabolites was measured by reversed high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Pearson product-moment correlations were used to investigate the relationship between T.O.V.A. errors of omission (OMM), errors of commission (COM), response time (RT), and response time variability (RTV) and catecholamine metabolites of DA and NE. All T.O.V.A. indexes under investigation were significantly correlated with urinary excretion of NE metabolites, but correlations were low-to-moderate in magnitude (.37-.50). In contrast, there were no statistically significant correlations between T.O.V.A. indices and DA metabolites. These findings and their concordance with past research in human adults and animals, as well as theoretical issues associated with the present results, are discussed.

Abstract
When analyzed separately, data from small studies provide only limited information with limited clinical generalizability, due to small sample size, differing assessments, and limited scope. In this methodological paper we outline a theoretical framework for performing meta-analysis of data obtained from disparate studies using disparate tests, based on calibration of the data from such studies and tests into a unified probability scale. We apply this method to combine the data from five studies examining the diagnostic abilities of different assessments of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), including behavioral rating scales and EEG assessments. The studies enrolled a total of 111 subjects, 56 ADHD and 55 controls. Each individual study had a small sample focused on a specific age/gender group, for example 8 boys ages 6-10, and generally had insufficient power to detect statistically significant differences. No gender, or age comparisons were possible within any single study. However, when calibrated and combined, the data resulted in a clear separation between ADHD versus non-ADHD groups in males below the age of 16 (p < 0.001), males above the age of 16, (p = 0.015), females below the age of 16, (p = 0.0014), and females above the age of 16, (p = 0.0022). We conclude that if data from various studies using various tests are made comparable, the resulting combined sample size and the increased diversity of the combined sample lead to increased significance of the statistical tests and allow for cross-sectional comparisons, which are not possible within each individual study.

Abstract
Nutritional factors may be relative to attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), although the pathogenic mechanism is still unknown. Based on the work of others, we hypothesized that children with ADHD have altered dietary patterns and fatty acid metabolism. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate dietary patterns and the blood fatty acid composition in children with ADHD in the Taipei area of Taiwan. The present study found that 58 subjects with ADHD (average age 8.5 years) had significantly higher intakes of iron and vitamin C compared to those of 52 control subjects (average age 7.9 years) (P < 0.05). The blood total protein content in subjects with ADHD was significantly lower than that in control subjects (P < 0.05). On the other hand, children with ADHD had significantly higher blood iron levels compared to the control children (P < 0.05). Additionally, plasma gamma-linolenic acid (18:3 n-6) in children with ADHD was higher than that in control children (P < 0.05). Concerning the composition of other fatty acids in the phospholipid isolated from red blood cell (RBC) membranes, oleic acid (18:1n-9) was significantly higher, whereas nervonic acid (24:1n-9), linoleic acid (18:2n-6), arachidonic acid (20:4n-6), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) were significantly lower in subjects with ADHD (P < 0.05). Our results suggest that there were no differences in dietary patterns of these children with ADHD except for the intake of iron and vitamin C; however, the fatty acid composition of phospholipid from RBC membranes in the ADHD children differed from that of the normal children.

Abstract
Noradrenaline: Hechtman (J Psychiat Neurosci 1994;19:193) argued for a role for frontal dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline (NA) in ADHD, where Oades (Prog Neurobiol 1987;29:365) has described lateralised functional impairments. Mechanisms (e.g. via alpha-2 sites) for stimulating low NA activity in ADHD children (J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1997;36:1688) in order to promote interactions with mesocortical DA have been discussed (J Psychopharmacology 1997;11:151; Psychiatr Res 1994;52:305). We described with indicators of overall transmitter metabolism (monoamines, metabolites in 24 h urine samples (Behav Brain Res 1997;88:95)) significantly lower utilisation ratios (MHPG/NA) in ADHD children with respect to healthy controls. Interestingly, a comparison of between catecholamine levels (DA/NA) showed a correlation with the conditioned blocking measure of selective attention recorded at the time of collection. This measure was negatively associated with blocking in controls. These results are consistent with reports of lower DOPEG and increased DOPAC in ADHD urine (J Child Adolesc Psychopharmacol 1996;6:63) and indicate that the relatively hyperactive DA versus NA systems may have functional consequences. Serotonin: the relevance for ADHD of an association of impulsivity with low serotonin (5-HT) metabolism (Behav Brain Sci 1986;9:319) has long been played down. Yet, some symptoms have been related to CSF measures of the metabolite 5-HIAA, and in particular the HVA/5-HIAA ratio has been reported to correlate with ratings of activity (Psychiatr Res 1994;52:305). We find that while urinary measures of 5-HIAA are somewhat higher, the ratio HVA/5-HIAA is markedly lower in ADHD children versus controls. In these ADHD children 5-HIAA levels were negatively related to d-prime measures in a continuous performance task (CPTax), and the HVA/5-HIAA was negatively associated with conditioned blocking. These results suggest a relatively low DA versus 5-HT activity may have functional consequences, albeit in a subgroup of ADHD. This is consistent with drug-induced prolactin changes reported by Verbaten et al. (Eur Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1999;8:30).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Reported correlations between epinephrine (EPI) excretion and classroom performance, the cognition-enhancing effects of EPI infusion, increased EPI excretion with stimulants, and reports of decreased EPI excretion in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suggest that sympathoadrenomedullary function might be altered in ADHD. This hypothesis was tested by examining sympathetic and adrenomedullary functioning during cognitive testing in boys with diagnosed ADHD. METHOD Urinary excretion of EPI and norepinephrine during a 3-hour cognitive test battery was assessed in 7- to 13-year-old boys. Excretion rates (nanograms per hour per square meter of body surface area) were determined in 200 individuals with ADHD (diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria), with or without co-occurring oppositional defiant/conduct disorder or learning disorder. A non-ADHD contrast group (n = 51) with similar comorbidity was also studied. RESULTS Substantially lower (mean +/- SE) urinary EPI excretion was observed in the ADHD-inattentive subtype (n = 71) compared with the control group (200 +/- 22 versus 278 +/- 24 ng/hr/m2; F = 5.99, p = .015, critical alpha = .017). No diagnostic group differences were seen for norepinephrine excretion. Correlational analysis of both parent- and teacher-rated behaviors revealed that inattention factors consistently negatively predicted urinary EPI excretion. CONCLUSIONS The data extend findings of lower adrenomedullary activity during cognitive challenge in individuals with ADHD and suggest that the alteration is associated with inattentive behavior.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to examine the effects of prenatal nicotine exposure by two different routes of drug administration, injection and infusion, on the development of monoaminergic systems and open field behavior in the neonatal and juvenile rat. The nicotine administration to pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats was carried out by subcutaneous injection (3 mg/kg twice daily) or infusion via implanted osmotic minipumps (6 mg/kg/day) from gestational day 4 (GD4) until GD20. At postnatal day 7 (PD7), 15 and 22, the contents of the neurotransmitters and their metabolites including noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (DA), dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), homovanilic acid (HVA), serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxy-3-indolacetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured in the midbrain+pons - medulla (M + P - M), forebrain and cerebellum. Prenatal nicotine exposure caused a persistent reduction of DA turnover in the forebrain at PD15 and PD22. In addition, the 5-HT system was also affected by prenatal nicotine, and reductions of 5-HT turnover in the M + P - M at PD15 and in the forebrain and the cerebellum at PD22 were found. Although there was no effect of prenatal nicotine on NE contents, the involvement of this system remains uncertain since we measured only NE contents without metabolites. In the present study, we also found significant route-related changes in the contents of the monoamines and metabolites in the NA, DA and 5-HT systems in all brain regions in rat offspring besides the effects of prenatal nicotine. In addition, the difference in administration route reflected the results of the open field test and the number of ambulations in the injection-group was less than that in the infusion-groups with no relation to nicotine administration. Therefore, such effects of "prenatal stress" accompanied by drug administration are not negligible in considering the risk assessment of prenatal nicotine exposure.

Abstract
Attention-deficit behaviors create a substantial burden for healthcare facilities. The incidence of ADHD is estimated at 5% to 10% of school-age children, but it is possible that many diagnoses of ADHD are flawed. At present, because the etiology of the disorder is not well understood, the diagnosis of ADHD by DSM-IV criteria hinges on the presence of inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, or a combination of these. Children who do not have ADHD also exhibit such behaviors in certain environments, as do children with learning disorders, family relational problems, and emotional difficulties. Thus it is imperative that physicians take a comprehensive approach to diagnosis when a child presents with behavioral difficulties. Noting that a number of myths about ADHD (eg, that improved behavior after being given stimulant medication proves a diagnosis of ADHD) have recently gained currency, the authors recommend going beyond the first step of behavior checklists in diagnosing the disorder and describe situations in which further assessment is indicated.

Abstract
The addictive nature of nicotine appears to depend on a number of psychobiological factors. This study explores the psychoactive effects of nicotine in relationship to the particular dysphoric aspects of Attention Deficit Disorder as a coincident factor in nicotine dependence and resistance to treatment. The psychological and behavioral effects of nicotine directly correspond to reduction in symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the neurochemical effects of nicotine are qualitatively similar to stimulant medications used to treat ADHD. Aspects of the treatment of nicotine or other addictions in such comorbid situations are discussed in the context of self-medication.

Abstract
Neurochemical and morphological effects of neonatal anoxia on monoamine systems were studied after 100% N2 exposure for 25 min at 30 h postnatally (postnatal day 2-P2). At 20 min after anoxia, reductions of tissue levels of cerebellar noradrenaline (NA) and striatal dopamine (DA) and metabolites were seen, while 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) was increased in cortex and cerebellum. At P7, NA increased in cerebellum, while serotonin (5-HT) and 5-HIAA decreased in cortex and cerebellum. At P21, increased hippocampal NA and striatal homovanillic acid (HVA) were found, while striatal 5-HT decreased and 5-HIAA increased in striatum and hippocampus. At P60, striatal 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and 5-HIAA levels were found to be enhanced. No effects were seen on 5-HT, tyrosine hydroxylase, or DARPP-32 immunostaining in cortex, hippocampus, and striatum. Thus, the neonatal anoxia induced both acute and persistent neurochemical abnormalities in monoamine systems that were not accompanied by morphological changes detectable with the methods used. The monoamine alterations found could be critically connected to the behavioral disturbances observed in rats after neonatal anoxia. The findings may also be of relevance to dysfunctions seen in humans after perinatal oxygen deficiency, e.g., the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder syndrome.

Abstract
Despite the tremendous research advances that have increased our knowledge regarding the pharmacodynamics, clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and adverse effects of stimulant medications in the treatment of children with ADHD, our knowledge is yet incomplete. Perhaps the most central unresolved issue concerns our understanding of the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, and diagnosis of ADHD. This review has touched briefly on the controversy and confusion surrounding this issue. Although our understanding of the use of stimulant medications in this disorder is similarly incomplete, a review of the literature does allow certain conclusions to be made that are helpful to the practitioner. 1. Stimulant medications are an effective treatment modality for most children with ADHD. Short-term efficacy is well documented, and long-term outcome may be improved when stimulants are used with other therapeutic strategies. Stimulants in and of themselves are not a panacea. 2. It is impossible to predict which children will have a favorable response to stimulant medications and which children may have a placebo response. The use of individual single-blind medication trials is a practical solution to this problem and should be considered for all children who are candidates for stimulant therapy as a means for preventing overuse or inappropriate use of these medications. 3. The precise mechanism of action of stimulants is not yet completely understood, but stimulants appear to exert their therapeutic effects through their influence on multiple neurotransmitters in the catecholamine, dopamine, norepinephrine axis in the central nervous system. 4. The three major stimulants--methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine, and pemoline--appear to be equally efficacious, although methylphenidate has emerged as the most commonly used and most studied drug. Because of its potential for causing liver toxicity, pemoline has remained a second-line medication. 5. The three major stimulants appear to have somewhat different mechanisms of action so that failure of a patient to respond to one medication does not mean that he or she will not respond to another. 6. The recommended starting doses for the stimulants are 0.3 mg per kg of methylphenidate, 0.15 mg per kg of dextroamphetamine, and 37.5 mg of pemoline. There is a great deal of individual variability in dose response, so doses must be titrated for optimal effects in each child. Sustained release preparations are much more expensive than regular preparations and may be less effective. 7. There is no evidence that stimulants have any effect on ultimate adult height. 8. Although relatively uncommon, motor tics have been observed in children on stimulants, and all children on stimulants need to be carefully monitored for the development of tics. Abstract
One important function of the catecholamine innervation of the cerebral cortex may be the control of attention. Of particular interest are the catecholamine projections to the cerebral cortex from the reticular formation, namely the dopamine neurons of the ventral tegmentum of the midbrain and the noradrenergic neurons of the locus coeruleus in the upper pons. Animal studies implicate noradrenaline and dopamine in a wide range of attention-related behaviours involving search and exploratory activity, distractibility, response rate, discriminability and the switching of attention. Most human studies come from the clinical literature relating to schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease and attention deficit disorder. An association has been claimed in each of these conditions between abnormal catecholamine activity (in particular dopamine) and attentional dysfunction. In particular, difficulty with the attachment of appropriate responses to environmental stimuli, akin to those observed in animals with lesions to central dopamine pathways, indicates a role for dopamine in response selection processes. Overall, the animal and human studies reviewed indicate a role for central noradrenaline and dopamine in the early and late processing of information, respectively.

Abstract
The fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited form of mental retardation known. Its phenotype includes large or prominent ears, macroorchidism, and characteristic behavioral problems. It has attracted the interest of cytogeneticists and molecular biologists because of its characteristic fragile site on the X chromosome. It has puzzled geneticists because of its unusual inheritance pattern involving nonpenetrant males. This syndrome has also spearheaded an appreciation of cytogenetic abnormalities in the etiology of all degrees of developmental delay.

Abstract
Four children with panic disorder, two boys and two girls between the ages of nine and 16 years, are discussed. They presented with complaints suggesting neurological disorder: 'dizziness', headache, episodic anxiety and 'blackout spells'. Neurological examinations and investigations were normal. Depression and/or anxiety were prominent in all cases. Drug treatment and psychotherapy were of some benefit. Four other children with attention deficit disorders are presented, whose mothers have panic disorder. This association points towards common biochemical influences and suggests that tricyclic drugs may be preferable to CNS stimulants as a form of treatment.

Abstract
A double-blind, crossover study of a 10 mg folic acid per day (vs. placebo) treatment was carried out in 25 fra(X) males (ages 1-31 years). Each treatment period lasted 6 months. Before, during and after the study, the patients were assessed blindly with psychological, language and behavioral evaluations, and parent or caretaker reports were collected. Standardized testing did not show statistically significant changes in the group as a whole; psychological testing demonstrated a statistically significant improvement on folic acid in the prepubertal males. After uncoding, caretaker or parent reports also demonstrated behavioral improvements in the prepubertal males while being treated with folic acid.
