Abstract
Introduction Nanotechnology plays a significant role in the biomedical and dental fields, offering numerous benefits to humans. Particularly, nanoparticles synthesised through green methods involving herbal formulations present promising advantages. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) demonstrate strong antibacterial properties. Utilising treatments incorporating chamomile tea and green tea may potentially reduce toxicity while enhancing antibacterial effectiveness against oral infections. This study aimed to develop a mouthwash containing ZnONPs, followed by an evaluation of both its cytotoxicity and antibacterial effectiveness. Materials and methods This study was conducted at Saveetha Dental College, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Science, Chennai, India. In the synthesis of ZnONPs, a formulation consisting of chamomile tea and green tea was employed. Subsequently, these synthesised nanoparticles were used in the preparation of mouthwash. An antimicrobial test of the produced ZnONPs was carried out using the agar well diffusion technique for oral pathogens. For analysis of cytotoxicity, brine shrimps were used in an assay, and comparisons were made with a commercially available mouthwash. Results The antimicrobial properties were assessed, and the formulated mouthwash demonstrated a zone of inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus (20 mm), Enterococcus faecalis (11 mm), Streptococcus mutans (15 mm) and Candida albicans (13 mm), when the agar well diffusion assay was carried out. Furthermore, the formulated mouthwash exhibited lower cytotoxicity compared to the commercially available mouthwash when cytotoxicity was checked in brine shrimps. Conclusion In our study, the ZnONP synthesis with chamomile tea and green tea showed notable antibacterial and antifungal effects. In addition, lower toxicity was observed compared to the commercially available mouthwash. These findings suggest that mouthwash formulated with green-synthesis ZnONPs could serve as a viable alternative to synthetic mouthwash options. As a result, it is suggested that ZnONPs could be employed in mouthwash formulations at concentrations of 40 µL.

Abstract
This four-season observational study aimed to examine the mediating role of the gut microbiota in the associations between green tea and catechin intakes and glucose metabolism in individuals without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In each of the 4 seasons, 85 individuals without T2DM (56 male [65.9%]; mean [standard deviation] age: 43.3 [9.4] years) provided blood samples, stool samples, 3-day weighed dietary records, and green tea samples. Catechin intake was estimated by analyzing the tea samples. Linear mixed-effects model analysis showed that green tea intake was negatively associated with fasting blood glucose and insulin levels, even after considering the seasonal variations. Of the gut microbial species associated with green tea intake, the mediation analysis revealed that Phocaeicola vulgatus mediated the association between green tea intake and fasting blood glucose levels. These findings indicate that green tea can improve glucose metabolism by decreasing the abundance of P. vulgatus that is associated with elevated blood glucose levels in individuals without T2DM.

Abstract
In an era where humanity is reinstating its lost hope and expectation on natural products, green tea occupies quite a position for what it has proven to be, in its endeavors for human welfare and health. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the key to the vast biological activities of green tea. Green tea is no longer in the backdrop; it has emerged as the most viral, trending bioactive molecule when it comes to health benefits for human beings. This review focuses on the use of various analytical techniques for the analysis of EGCG. That which has been achieved so far, in terms of in vitro, pure component analysis, as well as those spikes in biological fluids and those in vivo in animal and human samples, was surveyed and presented. The use of MS-based techniques for the analysis of EGCG is elaborately reviewed and the need for improvising the applications is explained. The review emphasizes that there is plenty of room to explore matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) applications in this subject area.

Abstract
Advanced treatments based on immune system manipulation, gene transcription and regulation, specific organ and cell targeting, and/or photon energy conversion have emerged as promising therapeutic strategies against a range of challenging diseases. Naturally derived macromolecules (e.g., proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, and polyphenols) have increasingly found use as fundamental building blocks for nanostructured particles as their advantageous properties, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, inherent bioactivity, and diverse chemical properties make them suitable for advanced therapeutic applications. This review provides a timely and comprehensive summary of the use of a broad range of natural building blocks in the rapidly developing field of advanced therapeutics with insights specific to nanostructured particles. We focus on an up-to-date overview of the assembly of nanostructured particles using natural building blocks and summarize their key scientific and preclinical milestones for advanced therapies, including adoptive cell therapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, active targeted drug delivery, photoacoustic therapy and imaging, photothermal therapy, and combinational therapy. A cross-comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of different natural building blocks are highlighted to elucidate the key design principles for such bio-derived nanoparticles toward improving their performance and adoption. Current challenges and future research directions are also discussed, which will accelerate our understanding of designing, engineering, and applying nanostructured particles for advanced therapies.

Abstract
Antidesma thwaitesianum Müll. Arg. or Mao is well-known in Thailand for its use in soft drinks and wine. This study investigated the potential of its fruit juice as a food preservative based on its antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogens and spoilage. The fruit juice had antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus TISTR1527, Staphylococcus aureus TISTR2329, Listeria monocytogenes DMST17303, Pseudomonas aeruginosa TISTR357, Salmonella Typhimurium DMST562, and Escherichia coli TISTR074. The minimum inhibitory concentration ranged from 25 to 100 mg/ml. Of significance was that the juice had excellent antifungal activities against Aspergillus flavus TISTR3135 and Penicillium digitatum ATCC10030. Furthermore, the fruit juice increased the lag time of spore germination of P. digitatum. Analysis of the phytochemical contents of the juice showed that the total phenolic and flavonoid contents were 20.07 mg GAE/g and 3.57 mg QE/g, respectively. In antioxidant activity assay, the juice exhibited moderate DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging and ferric-reducing activities. The addition of 5% fruit juice extended the microbial shelf life of chiffon cake. The treated chiffon cake had a shelf-life of 7 days, compared to 3 days for the untreated control. These results support the possible use of Mao fruit juice as an antimicrobial agent and a natural food preservative.

Abstract
(-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and tuna oil (TO) are beneficial bioactive compounds. EGCG, TO or a combination of, delivered by broccoli by-products (BBP), were added to an in vitro anaerobic fermentation system containing human fecal inocula to examine their ability to generate short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), metabolize EGCG and change the gut microbiota population (assessed by 16 S gene sequencing). Following 24 h fermentation, EGCG was hydrolyzed to (-)-epigallocatechin and gallic acid. EGCG significantly inhibited the production of SCFA (p < 0.05). Total SCFA in facal slurries with BBP or TO-BBP (48–49 µmol/mL) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the negative control with cellulose (21 µmol/mL). EGCG-BBP and TO-EGCG-BBP treatment increased the relative abundance of Gluconacetobacter, Klebsiella and Trabulsiella. BBP and TO-BBP showed the greatest potential for improving gut health with the growth promotion of high butyrate producers, including Collinsella aerofaciens, Bacillus coagulans and Lactobacillus reuteri.

Abstract
Aflatoxigenic fungi and aflatoxins are still a principal challenge that threatened peanut production, marketing, and handling. This study aimed to face the problem using bioactive materials, which reduce fungi and mycotoxin contamination, Moringa extracts may be suitable for solving this challenge. Also, the study was compared the extracts of leaves and oil-free seeds. Fresh leaves and seeds were collected, dried, and milled, while oil was collected by cold pressing. The extracts were evaluated for total phenols, flavonoids, and antioxidants, the oil contents of fatty acids, tocopherol, and sterols were determined. An emulsion for protecting peanuts compositing of leaves extract carried by Moringa oil, and commercial emulsifier. Leaves extract evaluation reflected distinct properties of its fibers, total phenols, and flavonoids. It was recorded a microbial inhibition of bacteria and fungi. The values for both minimal inhibition and fungicidal concentrations were recorded at 3.2 mg/mL and 490 μg/L, respectively. For oil, it showed a unique content, as oleic acid was the main fatty acid, with an affinity between palmitic and behenic in their ratios. Also, oil was recorded by high contents of alpha-tocopherol and Δ7-Campesterol, with 1.166 mg/kg oil as total sterols content. The leaves extract has also a unique capacity to inhibit toxigenic fungi. By applying the composite emulsion for peanut coating, results expressed a high CFU-count inhibition when it was inoculated by A. flavus strain compared to the control.

Abstract
Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are a group of polyphenols enriched in plant and human food. In recent decades, epidemiological studies have upheld the direct relationship between PA consumption and health benefits; therefore, studies on PAs have become a research hotspot. Although the oral bioavailability of PAs is quite low, pharmacokinetics data revealed that some small molecules and colonic microbial metabolites of PAs could be absorbed and exert their health beneficial effects. The pharmacological effects of PAs mainly include anti-oxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammation, antimicrobial, cardiovascular protection, neuroprotection, and metabolism-regulation behaviors. Moreover, current toxicological studies show that PAs have no observable toxicity to humans. This review summarizes the resources, extraction, structures, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, and toxicology of PAs and discusses the limitations of current studies. Areas for further research are also proposed.

Abstract
The gastrointestinal tract of the chicken harbors very complex and diverse microbial communities including both beneficial and harmful bacteria. However, a dynamic balance is generally maintained in such a way that beneficial bacteria predominate over harmful ones. Environmental factors can negatively affect this balance, resulting in harmful effects on the gut, declining health, and productivity. This means modulating changes in the chicken gut microbiota is an effective strategy to improve gut health and productivity. One strategy is using modified diets to favor the growth of beneficial bacteria and a key candidate are polyphenols, which have strong antioxidant potential and established health benefits. The gut microbiota-polyphenol interactions are of vital importance in their effects on the gut microbiota modulation because it affects not only the composition of gut bacteria but also improves bioavailability of polyphenols through generation of more bioactive metabolites enhancing their health effects on morphology and composition of the gut microbiota. The object of this review is to improve the understanding of polyphenol interactions with the gut microbiota and highlights their potential role in modulation of the gut microbiota of chicken.

Abstract
Tea, Camellia sinensis, which belongs to the family Theaceae, is a shrub or evergreen tree up to 16 m in height. Green tea is very popular because of its marked health benefits comprising its anticancer, anti-oxidant, and antimicrobial activities, as well as its effectiveness in reducing body weight. Additionally, it was recognized by Chinese people as an effective traditional drink required for the prophylaxis against many health ailments. This is due to the complex chemical composition of green tea, which comprises different classes of chemical compounds, such as polyphenols, alkaloids, proteins, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and others. The beneficial health effects of green tea ultimately led to its great consumption and increase its liability to be adulterated by either low-quality or non-green tea products with concomitant decrease in activity. Thus, in this review, green tea was selected to highlight its health benefits and phytoconstituents, as well as recent approaches for its quality-control monitoring that guarantee its incorporation in many pharmaceutical industries. More research is needed to find out other more biological activities, active constituents, and other simple and cheap techniques for its quality assurance that ascertain the prevention of its adulteration.

Abstract
In order to investigate protective roles of dietary selenium yeast (SY) and tea polyphenols (TPs) on growth of juvenile Wuchang bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) and its resistance under ammonia stress, juvenile Wuchang bream were randomly assigned into four groups: a control group fed basal diets and three treatment groups fed basal diets supplemented with 0.50 mg/kg SY, 50 mg/kg TPs and a combination of 0.50 mg/kg SY and 50 mg/kg TPs, respectively. After 60 days of feeding, growth parameters of Wuchang bream were measured along with serum hormones and the transcription of growth axis-related genes. Then fish were exposed to ammonia stress of 22.5 mg/L total ammonia nitrogen. Hepatic oxidative damage parameters, antioxidant responses and ultrastructure were evaluated before ammonia exposure (0 h) and at 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h after ammonia exposure. Results show that before ammonia exposure, the growth parameters, serum GH and IGF-1 levels as well as the growth axis-related gene expression (gh, ghr2 and igf-1) for the SY and combination groups were higher than those determined for the fish on the control diet. In contrast, the administration of TP alone didn't have significant effects on the growth parameters and growth-related hormones. After ammonia exposure, compared with the control, remarkable increases in the activity and mRNA expression of hepatic antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and catalase superoxide dismutase) in three treatment groups were observed along with decreases of hepatic malondialdehyde and protein carbonylation levels, indicating that the single and combined supplementation of SY and TPs could enhance antioxidant capacity to alleviate oxidative stress and damage by ammonia. Consistent with this finding, alterations of the liver ultrastructure in three treatment groups were less severe and faster recovery than in the control group after ammonia exposure. In conclusion, a basal diet supplemented with the combination of 0.50 mg/kg SY and 50 mg/kg TPs could has very beneficial effects on the whole aspects of the growth and ammonia resistance in Wuchang bream juveniles.

Abstract
Quality deterioration of fresh or processed foods is a major challenge for the food industry not only due to economic losses but also due to the risks associated with spoiled foods resulting, for example, from toxic compounds. On the other hand, there are increasing limitations on the application of synthetic preservatives such as antioxidants in foods because of their potential links to human health risks. With the new concept of functional ingredients and the development of the functional foods market, and the desire for a "clean" label, recent research has focused on finding safe additives with multifunctional effects to ensure food safety and quality. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a biologically active compound in green tea, has received considerable attention in recent years and is considered a potential alternative to synthetic food additives. EGCG has been shown to prevent the growth of different Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria responsible for food spoilage while showing antioxidant activity in food systems. This review focuses on recent findings related to EGCG separation techniques, modification of its structure, mechanisms of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and applications in preserving the quality and safety of foods.

Abstract
The sporicidal activities of the herbs were investigated to screen for novel antimicrobial substances against Bacillus subtilis spores. The bacterial inactivation effects of ethanol extracts of coriander, caraway, mace at concentrations of 0.5% (w/v) and 1.0-2.5% were about 10- and 100-fold respectively against spores. At pH 5, the antimicrobial activity was about 92%, but at pH 4 the sporicidal activity was particularly high, reducing the spore count by 99.99%. The 0.1-2.5% ethanol extract of herbs adjusted to pH 4-5 exhibited significantly marked deactivation effects, with 3-4 log CFU/mL reductions. The herb-acid combination exerted a further increase in sporicidal activity, with an additional 1-3 log CFU/mL reduction. The sporicidal mechanism was assumed to involve a two-step: (1) the hydrophobic binding of surfactants in the herbs onto the spore coat destroys its protein, and (2) the acid then penetrates into the interior, generating unstable growth conditions.

Abstract
In order to explore the effects of dietary selenium yeast, tea polyphenols and their combination on growth of Wuchang bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) and its resistance to nitrite stress, 360 healthy Wuchang bream with initial body weight of (55.90 ± 2.60) g were randomly divided into four groups: a control group fed with basal diet and three treated groups fed with basal diets supplemented with 0.50 mg/kg selenium yeast, 50 mg/kg tea polyphenols, and the combination of 0.50 mg/kg selenium yeast and 50 mg/kg tea polyphenols, respectively. After 60 d of feeding, the growth performance of Wuchang bream was measured. Then 25 fish per tank were exposed to nitrite stress of 15.0 mg/L. The serum stress hormones, liver histology and hepatic antioxidant responses were evaluated before nitrite exposure (0 h) and at 6, 12, 24, 48 and 96 h after exposure. The results showed that before nitrite exposure, compared with the control, the weight gain, specific growth rate, liver total antioxidant capacity, the activities and transcriptional levels of hepatic antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) in the selenium yeast and combination groups were significantly increased, while feed conversion rate was decreased significantly, which suggested that the combined use of selenium yeast and tea polyphenols as well as the single selenium yeast supplementation improved growth performance and enhanced antioxidant capacity in fish. After nitrite exposure, compared with the control, liver total antioxidant capacity as well as the activities and transcription levels of catalase superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in three treatment groups were significantly increased in varying degrees whereas serum cortisol contents and liver malondialdehyde levels were decreased significantly. By contrast, the combined use of selenium yeast and tea polyphenols was more effective than the single supplementation with selenium yeast or tea polyphenols. In consistent with this, alterations of the liver histostructure in three treatment groups were slower and less severe than in the control group after nitrite exposure. In conclusion, a basal diet supplemented with the combination of 0.50 mg/kg selenium yeast and 50 mg/kg tea polyphenols could effectively improve growth performance and nitrite resistance in Wuchang bream.

Abstract
Positive plant-soil feedback depends on beneficial interactions between roots and microbes for nutrient acquisition; growth promotion; and disease suppression. Recent pyrosequencing approaches have provided insight into the rhizosphere bacterial communities in various cropping systems. However; there is a scarcity of information about the influence of root exudates on the composition of root-associated bacterial communities in ratooning tea monocropping systems of different ages. In Southeastern China; tea cropping systems provide the unique natural experimental environment to compare the distribution of bacterial communities in different rhizo-compartments. High performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS) was performed to identify and quantify the allelochemicals in root exudates. A high-throughput sequence was used to determine the structural dynamics of the root-associated bacterial communities. Although soil physiochemical properties showed no significant differences in nutrients; long-term tea cultivation resulted in the accumulation of catechin-containing compounds in the rhizosphere and a lowering of pH. Moreover; distinct distribution patterns of bacterial taxa were observed in all three rhizo-compartments of two-year and 30-year monoculture tea; mediated strongly by soil pH and catechin-containing compounds. These results will help to explore the reasons why soil quality and fertility are disturbed in continuous ratooning tea monocropping systems; and to clarify the associated problems.

Abstract
Tea has recently received the attention of pharmaceutical and scientific communities due to the plethora of natural therapeutic compounds. As a result, numerous researches have been published in a bid to validate their biological activity. Moreover, major attention has been drawn to antimicrobial activities of tea. Being rich in phenolic compounds, tea has the preventive potential for colon, esophageal, and lung cancers, as well as urinary infections and dental caries, among others. The venture of this review was to illustrate the emerging findings on the antimicrobial properties of different teas and tea extracts, which have been obtained from several in vitro studies investigating the effects of these extracts against different microorganisms. Resistance to antimicrobial agents has become an increasingly important and urgent global problem. The extracts of tea origin as antimicrobial agents with new mechanisms of resistance would serve an alternative way of antimicrobial chemotherapy targeting the inhibition of microbial growth and the spread of antibiotic resistance with potential use in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries.

Abstract
Necrotic enteritis (NE) is an important concern in poultry industry since it causes economic losses, increased mortality, reduction of bird welfare, and contamination of chicken products for human consumption. For decades, the use of in-feed antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs) has been the main strategy to control intestinal pathogens including Clostridium perfringens (CP), the causative agent of NE. However, the use of AGPs in animal diet has been linked to the emergence and transmission of antimicrobial resistance through food-borne microorganisms, which has led to the ban of AGPs in many countries. This scenario has challenged the poultry industry to search for safer alternative products in order to prevent NE. In this context, the utilization of natural plant extracts with antimicrobial properties appears as a promising and feasible tool to control NE in chicken. In this paper, we review the scientific studies analyzing the potential of plant extracts as alternative feed additives to reduce NE in poultry, with focus on two types of plant products that arise as promising candidates: tannins and essential oils. Some of these products showed antimicrobial activity against CP and coccidia in vitro and in vivo and are able to increase productive performance, emulating the bioactive properties of AGPs.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the effects of a novel plant extract (PE) product (GrazixTM) on the performance and gut health of weaned piglets challenged with Escherichia coli. The PE was a standardised mixture of green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) and pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum) obtained by using the LiveXtract™ process. A total of 144 piglets were weaned at 24 days and allocated to 8 for a 35-day experiment with a 2×2×2 factorial design comparing different treatments (water without product (CT) or 8 μl/kg per day PE in drinking water (PE)), feeding regimens (ad libitum (AD) or restricted (RE)) and oral E. coli challenges on day 9 (sham (-) or infected (+)). There were six pens per group with three piglets per pen. On day 35, 24 of the RE feeding piglets were slaughtered. It was found that PE supplementation increased the average daily gain (ADG) from day 28 to day 35 (P=0.03) and increased the gain to feed ratio (G : F) from day 7 to day 14 (P=0.02). RE feeding led to lower feed intake in piglets during the 1st week (P<0.01), 2nd week (P=0.06), 3rd week (P=0.05), and throughout the course of the overall study period (P=0.05). E. coli challenge decreased the ADG and G : F ratio from day 7 to day 14 (P=0.08 and <0.01, respectively) and increased the faecal score (higher values indicate more severe diarrhoea) on days 14, 21, 28 and 35 (P<0.01). PE supplementation decreased the faecal score in the challenged piglets during the 1st week post-challenge (P<0.01). E. coli challenge increased the faecal E. coli level on day 14 (P=0.03) and increased the Enterobacteriaceae level on day 35 (P<0.01). Reduced faecal E. coli was observed on days 14 and 35 (P=0.05 and 0.02, respectively), and reduced Enterobacteriaceae (P<0.01) was found on day 35 in the PE animals. RE feeding increased the faecal Lactobacillus, Enterobacteriaceae and E. coli levels on day 35 (P=0.02, <0.01 and <0.01, respectively). These results suggest that PE supplementation may improve the gut health status of post-weaning piglets and counteract some of the negative effects that occur when piglets are challenged with E. coli.

Abstract
Polyphenolic compounds are plant nutraceuticals showing a huge structural diversity, including chlorogenic acids, hydrolyzable tannins, and flavonoids (flavonols, flavanones, flavan-3-ols, anthocyanidins, isoflavones, and flavones). Most of them occur as glycosylated derivatives in plants and foods. In order to become bioactive at human body, these polyphenols must undergo diverse intestinal transformations, due to the action of digestive enzymes, but also by the action of microbiota metabolism. After elimination of sugar tailoring (generating the corresponding aglycons) and diverse hydroxyl moieties, as well as further backbone reorganizations, the final absorbed compounds enter the portal vein circulation towards liver (where other enzymatic transformations take place) and from there to other organs, including behind the digestive tract or via blood towards urine excretion. During this transit along diverse tissues and organs, they are able to carry out strong antiviral, antibacterial, and antiparasitic activities. This paper revises and discusses these antimicrobial activities of dietary polyphenols and their relevance for human health, shedding light on the importance of polyphenols structure recognition by specific enzymes produced by intestinal microbial taxa.

Abstract
The oxidative stress imposed by reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in many chronic and degenerative diseases. As an important category of phytochemicals, phenolic compounds universally exist in plants, and have been considered to have high antioxidant ability and free radical scavenging capacity, with the mechanism of inhibiting the enzymes responsible for ROS production and reducing highly oxidized ROS. Therefore, phenolic compounds have attracted increasing attention as potential agents for preventing and treating many oxidative stress-related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, ageing, diabetes mellitus and neurodegenerative diseases. This review summarizes current knowledge of natural polyphenols, including resource, bioactivities, bioavailability and potential toxicity.

Abstract
The research was undertaken to determine the bacteriostatic effects of the concentrate of Japanese apricot juice (bainiku-ekisu), which is a popular health food in Taiwan and Japan, on Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. The results show that E. faecalis, S. aureus, and E. coli could be killed or inhibited by bainiku-ekisu at concentrations between 1.0 and 10.0 mg/mL. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 1 mg/mL for all strains, and the minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) were 5, 2.5, and 2.5 mg/mL for E. faecalis, S. aureus, and E. coli, respectively. Using the growth rate to calculate the MICs and MBCs, the MICs were 1.55, 1.43, and 0.97 mg/mL, and the MBCs were 2.59, 2.63, and 2.25 mg/mL for E. faecalis, S. aureus, and E. coli, respectively. According to the D values, E. faecalis and S. aureus exhibited lower resistance than E. coli at lower bainiku-ekisu concentrations (1.0 and 2.5 mg/mL), and the resistance of these two pathogens was better than that of E. coli at higher bainiku-ekisu concentrations (5.0 and 10.0 mg/mL). The Z values of the E. faecalis, S. aureus, and E. coli strains were 3.47, 4.93, and 11.62 mg/mL, respectively.

The present investigation was an attempt to elucidate oxidative stress induced by bisphenol A on erythrocytes and its amelioration by green tea extract. For this, venous blood samples from healthy human adults were collected in EDTA vials and used for preparation of erythrocytes suspension. When erythrocyte suspensions were treated with different concentrations of BPA/H2O2, a dose-dependent increase in hemolysis occurred. Similarly, when erythrocytes suspensions were treated with either different concentrations of H2O2 (0.05-0.25 mM) along with BPA (50 μg/mL) or 0.05 mM H2O2 along with different concentrations of BPA (50-250 μg/mL), dose-dependent significant increase in hemolysis occurred. The effect of BPA and H2O2 was found to be additive. For the confirmation, binding capacity of bisphenol A with erythrocyte proteins (hemoglobin, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) was inspected using molecular docking tool, which showed presence of various hydrogen bonds of BPA with the proteins. The present data clearly indicates that BPA causes oxidative stress in a similar way as H2O2 . Concurrent addition of different concentrations (10-50 μg/mL) of green tea extract to reaction mixture containing high dose of bisphenol A (250 μg/mL) caused concentration-dependent amelioration in bisphenol A-induced hemolysis. The effect was significant (P < 0.05). It is concluded that BPA-induced oxidative stress could be significantly mitigated by green tea extract.

Abstract
Antibiotics have been included in the formulation of feed for livestock production for more than 40 years as a strategy to improve feed conversion rates and to reduce costs. The use of antimicrobials as growth-promoting factors (AGP) in sub-therapeutic doses for long periods is particularly favorable for the selection of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms. In the last years, global concern about development of antimicrobial resistance and transference of resistance genes from animal to human strains has been rising. Removal of AGP from animal diets involves tremendous pressure on the livestock and poultry farmers, one of the main consequences being a substantial increase in the incidence of infectious diseases with the associated increase in the use of antibiotics for therapy, and concomitantly, economic cost. Therefore, alternatives to AGP are urgently needed. The challenge is to implement new alternatives without affecting the production performances of livestock and avoiding the increase of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms. Plant extracts and purified derived substances are showing promising results for animal nutrition, either from their efficacy as well as from an economical point of view. Tannins are plant derived compounds that are being successfully used as additives in poultry feed to control diseases and to improve animal performance. Successful use of any of these extracts as feed additives must ensure a product of consistent quality in enough quantity to fulfill the actual requirements of the poultry industry. Chestnut (hydrolysable) and Quebracho (condensed) tannins are probably the most readily available commercial products that are covering those needs. The present report intends to analyze the available data supporting their use.

Abstract
Rhododendron formosanum is distributed widely in the central mountains in Taiwan and the major allelopathic compound in the leaves has been identified as (-)-catechin, which is also a major allelochemical of an invasive spotted knapweed in North America. Soil microorganisms play key roles in ecosystems and influence various important processes, including allelopathy. However, no microorganism has been identified as an allelochemical mediator. This study focused on the role of microorganisms in the allelopathic effects of R. formosanum. The microorganism population in the rhizosphere of R. formosanum was investigated and genetic analysis revealed that the predominant genera of microorganisms in the rhizosphere of R. formosanum were Pseudomonas, Herbaspirillum, and Burkholderia. The dominant genera Pseudomonas utilized (-)-catechin as the carbon source and catalyzed the conversion of (-)-catechin into protocatechuic acid in vitro. The concentrations of allelochemicals in the soil were quantified by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/tandem mass spectrometry. The concentration of (-)-catechin in the soil increased significantly during the extreme rainfall in the summer season and suppressed total bacterial populations. Protocatechuic acid accumulation was observed while total bacterial populations increased abundantly in both laboratory and field studies. Allelopathic interactions were tested by evaluating the effects of different allelochemicals on the seed germination, radicle growth, and photosynthesis system II of lettuce. Protocatechuic acid exhibited higher phytotoxicity than (-)-catechin did and the effect of (-)-catechin on the inhibition of seed germination was enhanced by combining it with protocatechuic acid at a low concentration. This study revealed the significance of the allelopathic interactions between R. formosanum and microorganisms in the rhizosphere. These findings demonstrate that knowledge regarding the precise biotransformation process of (-)-catechin by microorganisms in the environment is necessary to increase our understanding of allelopathy.

Abstract
The consumption of green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been shown to have many physiological and pharmacological health benefits. In the past two decades several studies have reported that epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the main constituent of green tea, has anti-infective properties. Antiviral activities of EGCG with different modes of action have been demonstrated on diverse families of viruses, such as Retroviridae, Orthomyxoviridae and Flaviviridae and include important human pathogens like human immunodeficiency virus, influenza A virus and the hepatitis C virus. Furthermore, the molecule interferes with the replication cycle of DNA viruses like hepatitis B virus, herpes simplex virus and adenovirus. Most of these studies demonstrated antiviral properties within physiological concentrations of EGCG in vitro. In contrast, the minimum inhibitory concentrations against bacteria were 10-100-fold higher. Nevertheless, the antibacterial effects of EGCG alone and in combination with different antibiotics have been intensively analysed against a number of bacteria including multidrug-resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Furthermore, the catechin EGCG has antifungal activity against human-pathogenic yeasts like Candida albicans. Although the mechanistic effects of EGCG are not fully understood, there are results indicating that EGCG binds to lipid membranes and affects the folic acid metabolism of bacteria and fungi by inhibiting the cytoplasmic enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. This review summarizes the current knowledge and future perspectives on the antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects of the green tea constituent EGCG.

Abstract
AIM To characterize the cellular and molecular properties of Salmonella Typhimurium exposed to antimicrobials in association with physicochemical property, biofilm formation ability and gene expression patterns. METHODS AND RESULTS The antimicrobial susceptibilities against Salmonella Typhimurium were evaluated to determine the MICs of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), thymol, eugenol and polyphenol. Cell surface hydrophobicity, aggregation and biofilm formation assays were conducted to assess the physicochemical properties of Salm. Typhimurium treated with sublethal concentrations (SLC(2D) ) of antimicrobials. The expression patterns of adhesion-related genes (adrA, csgD, fimA and lpfE), virulence-related genes (hilA and stn) and efflux-related genes (acrA, acrB, ompD and tolC) were evaluated by real-time RT-PCR. Thymol exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against Salm. Typhimurium planktonic, biofilm and dispersed cells, showing 0·18, 0·96 and 0·42 mg ml(-1) of SLC(2D) values, respectively. The antimicrobial-treated Salm. Typhimurium showed low hydrophobicity. The highest auto-aggregation ability (67%) of polyphenol-treated Salm. Typhimurium was positively associated with the enhanced ability to form biofilms. The csgD, fimA, hilA and lpfE genes were up-regulated in the polyphenol-treated Salm. Typhimurium planktonic and biofilm cells. CONCLUSION The results suggest that the antimicrobial resistance and virulence potential varied depending on the physiological states of Salm. Typhimurium during the transition from planktonic to biofilm cell growth. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study can expand our understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms of biofilm formation and also provide useful information for reducing biofilm-associated virulence potential.

Abstract
Ilex paraguariensis is popularly used in the preparation of a tea infusion (yerba mate), most commonly produced and consumed in the South American countries of Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. In this study, aqueous extracts of commercial tea, derived from the holly plant species I. paraguariensis were evaluated for their ability to inhibit or inactivate Escherichia coli O157:H7 in a microbiological medium and modified apple juice. Dialyzed, lyophilized aqueous extracts were screened for antimicrobial activity against E. coli O157:H7 strains ATCC 43894 and 'Cider' in tryptic soy broth (TSB) and apple juice (adjusted to pH 6.0 to allow for growth of the bacterium). A mixture of the two strains was used as the inoculum when apple juice was used as the medium. MBCs were determined to be ca. 5 and 10 mg/ml for ATCC 43894 and 'Cider', respectively, in TSB. Higher concentrations of the extract were required to inactivate E. coli O157:H7 in pH-adjusted apple juice. An approximate 4.5-log reduction was observed for E. coli O157:H7 treated with 40 mg/ml extract. It was concluded that aqueous extracts from commercial yerba mate have potential to be used as antimicrobials in foods and beverages against pathogenic E. coli O157:H7.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tea polyphenols (TP), as the most active constituents of tea, are considered natural food additives. This study examined the preservative properties of TP for Collichthys fish ball in well storage. Vacuum-packed Collichthys fish balls were treated with 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, and 0.30 g kg(-1) TP and stored at 0 °C for 17 days. RESULTS Microbiological results were obtained using a biochemical test, API system kit, and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Results confirmed that the dominant bacteria in Collichthys fish balls are the genera Serratia and Pseudomonas. Total viable counts dropped two orders of magnitude in Collichthys fish balls with 0.25 g kg(-1) TP compared with the control. The advantages of total volatile basic nitrogen value, 2-thiobarbituric acid value and texture value were clearly observed, whereas pH and whiteness value exhibited no significant decrease for the group treated with 0.25 g kg(-1) TP. More than 0.25 g kg(-1) TP added could retain excellent fish ball characteristics in terms of sensory assessment after 17 days. CONCLUSION The shelf life of Collichthys fish balls supplemented with tea polyphenols can be prolonged for an additional 6 days in good condition at 0 °C storage.

Abstract
This study was designed to assess the effect of green tea, an aqueous extract of Camellia sinensis, on the oxidative stress, antioxidant defense system and liver pathology of Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice. Green tea at concentration of 3% (w/v) was given orally to treated mice as sole source of drinking water from the end of the 4th week to the end of 10th week post-infection; untreated mice were allowed to drink normal water. The data of the studied S. mansoni-infected mice exhibited a suppression of hepatic total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activity and glutathione content. The liver lipid peroxidation was deleteriously elevated in S. mansoni-infected mice. The hepatic total protein content, AST and ALT activities were profoundly decreased in the S. mansoni-infected mice. Most hepatocytes were damaged and showed abnormal microscopic appearance with aggressive necrosis. Both total protein and glycogen levels have been greatly reduced as indicated by histochemical examination. The treatment of S. mansoni-infected mice with green tea succeeded to suppress oxidative stress by decreasing the lipid peroxides but failed to significantly enhance the antioxidant defense system and deteriorated changes owing to liver damage and necrosis. In consistence with biochemical data, histopathological and histochemical data indicated that treatment of S. mansoni-infected mice with green tea could ameliorate hepatocytes thus reduce cellular necrosis and partially restore both total protein and glycogen levels. Thus, the study concluded that the green tea suppresses the oxidative stress through its constituent with free radicals scavenging properties rather than through the endogenous antioxidant defense system.

Abstract
(-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) exhibited strong antimicrobial activity. However, the easy oxidation of EGCG has limited its application. To increase the antimicrobial activity and stability of EGCG, the EGCG-Cu(II) complex was formed by chelating copper ions and then electronspun into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers. Electronspun nanofibrous membranes were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which showed that the average fiber diameter was 210 nm. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of EGCG-Cu(II)/PVA membranes were tested against the tested strains. The bactericidal activity of EGCG-Cu(II) was suppressed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Cell killing was accompanied by the leakage of intracellular proteins, indicating that the cytoplasmic membrane was badly damaged after exposure to the EGCG-Cu(II)/PVA membrane. We observed the process of cell damage by SEM. On the basis of experimental evidence and theoretical analyses, the mechanism proposed that copper ions played a cooperative role in the bactericidal process of EGCG. To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the EGCG-Cu(II)/PVA membrane, we developed a rapid detection method by labeling cells with water-soluble CdTe quantum dots.

Abstract
Effect of diet enriched with green tea at 0, 0.01, 0.1 or 1.0% levels on immune responses such as non-specific humoral (lysozyme, antiprotease and complement) and cellular (myeloperoxidase content, production of reactive oxygen, and nitrogen species) and disease resistance on week 1, 2 or 4 in kelp grouper Epinephelus bruneus challenged with Vibrio carchariae (2.47 × 10(8) CFU ml(-1)) was quantified. At all doses green tea supplementation significantly enhanced the serum lysozyme activity from weeks 1 to 4. On the other hand, after week 2 the serum hemolytic complement activity, leucocyte myeloperoxidase content and reactive nitrogen species protection significantly increased in groups fed with 0.01 and 0.1% green tea supplementation diets. The serum antiprotease activity significantly increased in group fed with at 1.0% green tea from week 1 to 4. However, all diets except at 0.01% level resulted in a significant decrease in reactive oxygen species protection during the experimental period. Challenged groups fed with green tea enriched diet at 0.01 and 0.1% level had a higher relative percent survival than with 1.0% diet on week 1, 2 or 4. The results suggest that dietary administration of green tea supplementation at a concentration of 0.01 and 0.1% level positively enhances the non-specific humoral and cellular immune responses and disease resistance of kelp grouper E. bruneus to V. carchariae.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the effect of tea polyphenol (TP) and Candida ernobii alone or in combination against postharvest disease (Diplodia natalensis) in citrus fruit and to evaluate the possible mechanisms involved. METHODS AND RESULTS TP at concentrations of 0.1%, 0.5% and 1.0% alone, or in combination with C. ernobii (1x10(6) CFU ml(-1)), showed a lower infection rate of stem-end rot. TP at the concentration of 0.5% or above significantly inhibited the spore germination of D. natalensis. TP at the concentration of 1.0% showed inhibitary ability on mycelium growth of D. natalensis. The addition of TP did not affect the growth of C. ernobii in vitro and significantly increased the population of C. ernobii in vivo. CONCLUSIONS TP exhibited an inhibitory effect against D. natalensis and improved the biocontrol efficacy of C. ernobii. It was direct because of the inhibitory effects of TP on spore germination and mycelial growth of D. natalensis in vitro and indirect because of the increased populations of C. ernobii in vivo. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The results suggested that TP alone or in combination with biocontrol agents has great potential in commercial management of postharvest diseases in fruits.

Abstract
The antimicrobial effects of green tea and rosemary added to foods as antagonists to foodborne pathogens were determined in laboratory media and oriental-style rice cakes. The growth of each pathogen (Bacillus cereus, Salmonella Typhimurium, Enterobacter sakazakii, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes) in tryptic soy broth or rice cake with or without addition of green tea or rosemary leaf powders before autoclaving or cooking, respectively, was investigated after inoculation. The addition of 1% green tea or rosemary produced similar results for inhibiting the growth of pathogens in tryptic soy broth. However, green tea was more effective than rosemary for inhibiting the growth of L. monocytogenes. Both botanicals had inhibitory effects against all pathogens tested in this study. Green tea was particularly effective against B. cereus, S. aureus, and L. monocytogenes, and rosemary was strongly inhibitory against B. cereus and S. aureus. The addition of 1 or 3% green tea or rosemary to rice cakes did not significantly reduce total aerobic counts; however, levels of B. cereus and S. aureus were significantly reduced in rice cakes stored for 3 days at room temperature (22 degrees C). The order of antimicrobial activities against B. cereus in rice cake was 1% rosemary < 1% green tea < 3% rosemary = 3% green tea. These results indicate that the use of natural plant materials such as green tea and rosemary could improve the microbial quality of foods in addition to their functional properties.
