Ordered polymer composite materials: challenges and opportunities

Polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogels have garnered significant attention due to their unique swelling properties, biocompatibility, and stability, resulting in them being promising candidates for various applications, ranging from drug delivery to tissue engineering. However, traditional PAM hydrogels suffer from low strength and poor toughness, which limits their widespread use. In this study, based on the theory of filler-reinforced composites, we introduced ordered sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) particles into PAM hydrogels using electric field-assisted techniques. The effects of the geometric dimensions and filling concentration of SPS particles on thermal stability, swelling/deswelling behavior, and mechanical properties of composite hydrogels were investigated. When filled with ordered 100 nm SPS particles at a concentration of 2.0 g·L-1, the resulting SPS/PAM composite exhibited improved water retention capacity, as well as a fracture elongation of 316 % and a tensile strength of 23 kPa. These findings in the paper provide valuable insights into the understanding of PAM hydrogels and open up new avenues for the development of advanced hydrogel-based systems with enhanced performance and functionality.

One-step formation of three-dimensional interconnected T-shaped microstructures inside composites by orthogonal bidirectional self-assembly method

The fillers inside a polymer matrix should typically be self-assembled in both the horizontal and vertical directions to obtain 3-dimentional (3D) percolation pathways, whereby the fields of application can be expanded and the properties of organic-inorganic composite films improved. Conventional dielectrophoresis techniques can typically only drive fillers to self-assemble in only one direction. We have devised a one-step dielectrophoresis-driven approach that effectively induces fillers self-assembly along two orthogonal axes, which results in the formation of 3D interconnected T-shaped iron microstructures (3D-T CIP) inside a polymer matrix. This approach to carbonyl iron powder (CIP) embedded in a polymer matrix results in a linear structure along the thickness direction and a network structure on the top surface of the film. The fillers in the polymer were controlled to achieve orthogonal bidirectional self-assembly using an external alternating current (AC) electric field and a non-contact technique that did not lead to electrical breakdown. The process of 3D-T CIP formation was observed in real time using in situ observation methods with optical microscopy, and the quantity and quality of self-assembly were characterized using statistical and fractal analysis. The process of fillers self-assembly along the direction perpendicular to the electric field was explained by finite element analogue simulations, and the results indicated that the insulating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film between the electrode and the CIP/prepolymer suspension was the key to the formation of the 3D-T CIP. In contrast to the traditional two-step method of fabricating sandwich-structured film, the fabricated 3D-T CIP film with 3D electrically conductive pathways can be applied as magnetic field sensor.

Fe3O4/PMMA with Well-Arranged Structures Synthesized through Magnetic Field-Assisted Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Particle- or fiber-reinforced polymer composites with controlled orientations are attracting interest and applications producing innovative materials, biological constructs, and energy devices. To gain the controlled orientations, filed-assisted synthesis is widely selected for its easy operation and control. In this paper, we designed magnetic field-assisted equipment and synthesized a magnetic polymer composite Fe3O4/PMMA with a well-arranged layers structure by combining the magnetic field with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). During the polymerization of polymer composites, the magnetic nanoparticles were surrounded by monomers. With the growth of polymer chains, the magnetic particles pushed polymer chains to move according to a specific direction and form a well-arranged structure under the magnetic fields. The existence of a well-arranged layered structure of the composites gives potential guidance for controlling the micro-structure by adding an extra field during the polymerization process. The experimental results provided a possible design to influence the macroscale properties through control of the micro-structure of polymer composites.

Affine Deformation and Self-Assembly Alignment in Hydrogel Nanocomposites

Tailoring the order in hierarchical structures is a key goal of bioinspired nanocomposite design. Recently, nacre-like materials have been developed by solvent evaporation methods that are scalable and attain advanced functionalities. However, understanding the alignment mechanisms of 2D fillers, nanosheets, or platelets remains challenging. This work explores possible pathways for nanocomposite ordering via orientation distribution functions. We demonstrate how the immobilization of 2D materials via (pseudo)network formation is crucial to alignment based on evaporation. We show a modified affine deformation model that describes such evaporative methods. In this, a gel network develops enough yield stress and uniformly deforms as drying proceeds, along with the immobilized particles, causing an in-plane orientation. Herein, we tested the dominance of this approach by using a thermo-reversible gel for rapid montmorillonite (MMT) particle fixation. We researched gelatin/MMT as a model system to investigate the effects of high loadings, orientational order, and aspect ratio. The nacre-like nanocomposites showed a semiconstant order parameter (⟨P2⟩ ∼ 0.7) over increasing nanofiller content up to 64 vol % filler. This remarkable alignment resulted in continuously improved mechanical and water vapor barrier properties over unusually large filler fractions. Some variations in stiffness and diffusion properties were observed, possibly correlated to the applied drying conditions of the hybrid hydrogels. The affine deformation strategy holds promise for developing next-generation advanced materials with tailored properties even at (very) high filler loadings. Furthermore, a gelling approach offers the advantages of simplicity and versatility in the formulation of the components, which is useful for large-scale fabrication methods.

3D Printed Conformal Strain and Humidity Sensors for Human Motion Prediction and Health Monitoring via Machine Learning

Wearable sensors have garnered considerable attention due to their flexibility and lightweight characteristics in the realm of healthcare applications. However, developing robust wearable sensors with facile fabrication and good conformity remains a challenge. In this study, a conductive graphene nanoplate-carbon nanotube (GC) ink is synthesized for multi jet fusion (MJF) printing. The layer-by-layer fabrication process of MJF not only improves the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of the printed GC sensor but also bolsters its robustness and sensitivity. The direction of sensor bending significantly impacts the relative resistance changes, allowing for precise investigations of joint motions in the human body, such as those of the fingers, wrists, elbows, necks, and knees. Furthermore, the data of resistance changes collected by the GC sensor are utilized to train a support vector machine with a 95.83% accuracy rate for predicting human motions. Due to its stable humidity sensitivity, the sensor also demonstrates excellent performance in monitoring human breath and predicting breath modes (normal, fast, and deep breath), thereby expanding its potential applications in healthcare. This work opens up new avenues for using MJF-printed wearable sensors for a variety of healthcare applications.

Advances in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Latex Particles via In Situ Emulsion Polymerization

Hybrid latex particles combine the unique properties of inorganic nano/micro particles with the inherent properties of polymers, exhibiting tremendous potential for a variety of applications. Recent years have witnessed an increased interest in the design and preparation of hybrid latex particles with well-defined size, structure and morphology. Due to its simplicity, versatility and environmental friendliness, the in situ (Pickering) emulsion polymerization has been demonstrated to be a powerful approach for the large-scale preparation of hybrid latex particles. In this review, the strategies and applications of in situ (Pickering) emulsion polymerization for the preparation of hybrid latex particles are systematically summarized. A particular focus is placed on the strategies for the preparation of hybrid latex particles with enhanced properties and well-defined core-shell, yolk-shell, multinuclear, raspberry-like, dumbbell-shaped, multipod-like or armored morphologies. We hope that the considerable advances, examples and principles presented in this review can motivate future contributions to provide a deeper understanding of current preparation technologies, develop new processes, and enable further exploitation of hybrid latex particles with outstanding characteristics and properties.

In Situ Self-Assembly of Nanoscale Particles into Macroscale Ordered Monolayers with Enhanced Memory Performance

In situ fabrication of macroscale ordered monolayers of nanoparticles (NPs) on targeted substrates is highly desirable for precision electronic and optical devices, while it remains a great challenge. In this study, a solution is provided to address this challenge by developing a colloidal ink formulation and employing the direct-ink-writing (DIW) technique, where on-demand delivery of ink at a targeted location and directional evaporation with controllable rate are leveraged to precisely guide the deposition of polystyrene-grafted gold NPs (Au@PS NPs) into a macroscale monolayer with an ordered Au NP array embedded in a PS thin film. A 2D steady-state diffusion-controlled evaporation model, which explains the parameter dependence of the experimental results and gives semiquantitative agreement with the experimental evaporation kinetics is proposed. The ordered monolayer is used as both nanocrystal floating gates and the tunneling layer for nonvolatile memory devices. It shows significantly enhanced performance compared with a disordered NP film prepared by spin coating. This approach allows for fine control of NP self-assembly to print macroscaleordered monolayers directly onto substrates, which has great promise for application in broad fields, including microelectronic and photoelectronic devices, sensors, and functional coatings.

Emerging application of nanotechnology for mankind

Nanotechnology has proven to be the greatest multidisciplinary field in the current years with potential applications in agriculture, pollution remediation, environmental sustainability, as well as most recently in pharmaceutical industries. As a result of its physical, chemical, and biological productivity, resistance, and matricular organization at a larger scale, the potential of nanocomposites revealed different sorts of assembling structures via testing. Biosensors are known some specifically promising inventions whereas carbon nanotube, magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), quantum dots, and gold NPs showed capability to repair damaged cells, molecular docking, drug-delivery, and nano-remediation of toxic elements. PEGylated(Poly ethyl glycol amyl gated) redox-responsive nanoscale COFs drug delivery from AgNPs and AuNPs are known to be sun blockers in sunscreen lotions. The emerging trends and yet more to be discovered to bridge the gaps forming in the field of nanotechnology, especially insights into environmental concerns and health issues most importantly the food web which is connected with the well beings of mankind to perform its tasks giving necessary results. The current review detailed emerging role of nanomaterials in human life.

Tetrazine bioorthogonal chemistry makes nanotechnology a powerful toolbox for biological applications

Bioorthogonal chemistry enables researchers to manipulate bioactive molecules in living systems. These highly selective and biocompatible reactions can be carried out in various complex environments. Over the past two decades, a considerable number of strides have been made to expand the capacities of bioorthogonal chemistry coupled with the aim to fine-tune present reactions for specific applications. The good points of bioorthogonal chemistry have pushed material chemists to integrate bioorthogonal chemistry with nanotechnologies to broaden the biological applications of nanomaterials. Notably, bioorthogonal nanotechnologies fundamentally rely on, more than half, according to our investigation, tetrazine bioorthogonal chemistry (TBC) to function as bioorthogonal handles to react with target agents owing to the extremely rapid kinetics and high selectivities of TBC. Its utilization in combination with nanotechnologies has led to developments in various areas of biomedicine, such as in situ drug activation and targeted delivery, bioimaging and biosensing, and the understanding of cell-biomolecule interactions. Given the fantastic past achievements and the rapid developments in tetrazine bioorthogonal technologies, the future is certainly very bright.

Symmetry-Breaking and Self-Sorting in Block Copolymer-Based Multicomponent Nanocomposites

Co-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and nanostructured polymer matrix represents an intricate interplay of enthalpic or entropic forces. Particle size largely affects the phase behavior of the nanocomposite. Theoretical studies indicate that new morphologies would emerge when the particles become comparable to the soft matrix's size, but this has rarely been supported experimentally. By designing a multicomponent blend composed of NPs, block copolymer-based supramolecules, and small molecules, a 3-D ordered lattice beyond the native BCP's morphology was recently reported when the particle is larger than the microdomain of BCP. The blend can accommodate various formulation variables. In this paper, when the particle size equals the microdomain size, a symmetry-broken phase appears in a narrow range of particle sizes and compositions, which we named the "train track" structure. In this phase, the NPs aligned into a 3-D hexagonal lattice and packed asymmetrically along the c axis, making the projection of the ac and the bc plane resemble train tracks. Computational studies show that the broken symmetry reduces the polymer chain deformation and stabilizes the metastable hexagonally perforated lamellar morphology. Given the mobility of the multicomponent blend, the system shows a self-sorting behavior: segregating into two macroscopic phases with different nanostructures based on only a few nanometers NP size differences. Smaller NPs form "train track" morphology, while larger NPs form a "simple hexagon" structure, where the NPs take a symmetric hexagonal arrangement. Detailed structural evolution and simulation studies confirm the systematic-wide cooperativity across different components, indicating the strong self-regulation of the multicomponent system.

Recent trends and advances in polyindole-based nanocomposites as potential antimicrobial agents: a mini review

Infections caused by multi-drug resistant microbes are a big challenge to the medical field and it necessitates the need for new biomedical agents that can act as potential candidates against these pathogens. Several polyindole based nanocomposites were found to exhibit the ability to release reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hence they show excellent antimicrobial properties. The features of polyindole can be fine-tuned to make them potential alternatives to antibiotics and antifungal medicines. This review clearly portrays the antimicrobial properties of polyindole based nanocomposites, reported so far for biomedical applications. This review will give a clear insight into the scope and possibilities for further research on the biomedical applications of polyindole based nanocomposites.

Nanoparticle Superlattices through Template-Encoded DNA Dendrimers

The chemical interactions that lead to the emergence of hierarchical structures are often highly complex and difficult to program. Herein, the synthesis of a series of superlattices based upon 30 different structurally reconfigurable DNA dendrimers is reported, each of which presents a well-defined number of single-stranded oligonucleotides (i.e., sticky ends) on its surface. Such building blocks assemble with complementary DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to yield five distinct crystal structures, depending upon choice of dendrimer and defined by phase symmetry. These DNA dendrimers can associate to form micelle-dendrimers, whereby the extent of association can be modulated based upon surfactant concentration and dendrimer length to produce a low-symmetry Ti₅Ga₄-type phase that has yet to be reported in the field of colloidal crystal engineering. Taken together, colloidal crystals that feature three different types of particle bonding interactions-template-dendron, dendrimer-dendrimer, and DNA-modified AuNP-dendrimer-are reported, illustrating how sequence-defined recognition and dynamic association can be combined to yield complex hierarchical materials.

Diversifying Composition Leads to Hierarchical Composites with Design Flexibility and Structural Fidelity

Although significant progress has been made in the self-assembly of nanostructures, present successes heavily rely on precision in building block design, composition, and pair interactions. These requirements fundamentally limit our ability to synthesize macroscopic materials where the likelihood of impurity inclusion escalates and, more importantly, to access molecular-to-nanoscopic-to-microscopic-to-macroscopic hierarchies, since the types and compositions of building blocks vary at each stage. Inspired by biological blends and high-entropy alloys, we hypothesize that diversifying the blend's composition can overcome these limitations. Increasing the number of components increases mixing entropy, leading to the dispersion of different components and, as a result, enhances interphase miscibility, weakens the dependence on specific pair interactions, and enables long-range cooperativity. This hypothesis is validated in complex blends containing small molecules, block copolymer-based supramolecules, and nanoparticles/colloidal particles. Hierarchically structured composites can be obtained with formulation flexibility in the filler selection and blend composition. It is worth noting that, by adding small molecules, we can solve the size constraint that plagues traditional block copolymer/nanoparticle blends. Detailed characterization and simulation further confirm that each component is distributed to locally mediate unfavorable interactions, cooperatively mitigate composition fluctuations, and retain structural fidelity. Furthermore, the blends have sufficient mobility to access tunable microstructures without compromising the order of the nanostructure. Besides establishing a kinetically viable pathway to release current constraints in the composite design and to navigate uncertainties during structure formation over multiple length scales, the present study demonstrates that entropy-driven behaviors can be realized in systems beyond high-entropy alloys despite inherent differences between metal alloys and organic/inorganic hybrids.
