Abstract
BACKGROUND The American Heart Association (AHA), in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health, annually reports the most up-to-date statistics related to heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular risk factors, including core health behaviors (smoking, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and obesity) and health factors (cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose control, and metabolic syndrome) that contribute to cardiovascular health. The AHA Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update presents the latest data on a range of major clinical heart and circulatory disease conditions (including stroke, brain health, complications of pregnancy, kidney disease, congenital heart disease, rhythm disorders, sudden cardiac arrest, subclinical atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, valvular disease, venous thromboembolism, and peripheral artery disease) and the associated outcomes (including quality of care, procedures, and economic costs). METHODS The AHA, through its Epidemiology and Prevention Statistics Committee, continuously monitors and evaluates sources of data on heart disease and stroke in the United States and globally to provide the most current information available in the annual Statistical Update with review of published literature through the year before writing. The 2024 AHA Statistical Update is the product of a full year's worth of effort in 2023 by dedicated volunteer clinicians and scientists, committed government professionals, and AHA staff members. The AHA strives to further understand and help heal health problems inflicted by structural racism, a public health crisis that can significantly damage physical and mental health and perpetuate disparities in access to health care, education, income, housing, and several other factors vital to healthy lives. This year's edition includes additional global data, as well as data on the monitoring and benefits of cardiovascular health in the population, with an enhanced focus on health equity across several key domains. RESULTS Each of the chapters in the Statistical Update focuses on a different topic related to heart disease and stroke statistics. CONCLUSIONS The Statistical Update represents a critical resource for the lay public, policymakers, media professionals, clinicians, health care administrators, researchers, health advocates, and others seeking the best available data on these factors and conditions.

Abstract
Achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is a strategic objective of the Jordanian government and has been prioritized in its strategies and plans. However, there are several challenges affecting primary healthcare in Jordan and the health system in general that prevent Jordan from achieving UHC. This paper highlights the importance of team-based care in the form of Family Health Teams (FHTs) to realize Jordan's goal of achieving UHC. FHTs are a team-based approach that brings together diverse professionals to provide a comprehensive, efficient, patient-centered primary care system that meets the changing needs of Jordan's population and refugees. However, the implementation of FHT may encounter obstacles, including individual, organizational, institutional, and external barriers. To overcome such obstacles, several actions and processes need to be taken, including political commitment and leadership, implementing good governance and policy frameworks, allocating resources and funding, multisectoral collaboration, and engagement of communities and stakeholders. The successful implementation of FHTs requires participation from government officials, parliamentarians, civil society, and influential community, religious, and business leaders. A strategic policy framework, effective oversight, coalition building, regulation, attention to system design, and accountability are also essential. In conclusion, adopting the FHT approach in Jordan's Primary Healthcare system offers a promising path towards achieving UHC, improving healthcare access, quality, and efficiency while addressing the unique challenges faced by the country's healthcare system.

Abstract
Background N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) enzyme is a Phase II drug-metabolizing enzyme that metabolizes different compounds. Genetic variations in NAT2 can influence the enzyme's activity and potentially lead to the development of certain diseases. Aim This study aimed to investigate the association of NAT2 variants with the risk of Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the lipid profile among Jordanian patients. Methods We sequenced the whole protein-coding region in NAT2 using Sanger's method among a sample of 45 Jordanian T2DM patients and 50 control subjects. Moreover, we analyzed the lipid profiles of the patients and examined any potential associations with NAT2 variants. Results This study revealed that the heterozygous NAT2*13 C/T genotype is significantly (P = 0.03) more common among T2DM (44%) than non-T2DM subjects (23.5%). Furthermore, the frequency of homozygous NAT2*13 T/T genotype was found to be significantly higher (P = 0.03) among T2DM patients (26.7%) compared to that of non-T2DM subjects (11%). The heterozygous NAT2*7 G/A genotype was exclusively observed in T2DM patients (11.1%) and absent in the control non-T2DM group. Moreover, among T2DM patients, those with a homozygous NAT2*11 T/T genotype exhibited significantly higher levels of triglycerides (381.50 ± 9.19 ng/dL) with a P value of 0.01 compared to those with heterozygous NAT2*11 C/T (136.23 ± 51.12 ng/dL) or wild-type NAT2*11 C/C (193.65 ± 109.89 ng/dL) genotypes. T2DM patients with homozygous NAT2*12 G/G genotype had a significantly (P = 0.04) higher triglyceride levels (275.67 ± 183.42 ng/dL) than the heterozygous NAT2*12 A/G (140.02 ± 49.53 ng/dL) and the wild NAT2*12 A/A (193.65 ± 109.89 ng/dL). Conclusion The finding in this study suggests that the NAT2 gene is a potential biomarker for the development of T2DM and changes in triglyceride levels among Jordanians. However, it is important to note that our sample size was limited; therefore, further clinical studies with a larger cohort are necessary to validate these findings.

Abstract
Over the past decades, Jordan has witnessed unprecedented growth in the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases, with a crude prevalence of 48.2% in 2020, up from 38% in 2009. This is slightly higher than the reported prevalence of 40% in the US population. According to the latest World Health Organization report published in 2020, Jordan's leading cause of mortality is cardiovascular diseases with a cause-specific mortality rate of 18.6%. Since the advancement of the healthcare system in Jordan took place in the early 2000s, Jordan has witnessed a major epidemiologic transition where the burden of infectious disease has decreased, but on the other hand, the burden of cardiometabolic disease has increased as well. For such a country with limited resources and healthcare infrastructure where two-thirds of its population is below the age of 30, this is alarming. This growth can be attributed to a complex interplay between genetic and lifestyle factors. Smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, and unhealthy diet are considered major public health problems in Jordan, as reported in 2007 by the Jordanian Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance. We attempt to raise awareness through this review article, so healthcare providers in Jordan understand the magnitude of the issue, and appropriate steps are taken to reestablish screening and management guidelines pertaining to cardiometabolic diseases in Jordan.

Abstract
Patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) negative chronic HBV infection are regularly followed up. This study investigates the presence of insulin resistance and the relationship between hepatosteatosis and insulin resistance in patients with HBeAg negative chronic HBV infection using the TyG index and TG/HDL-C ratio. Patients with HBeAg negative chronic HBV infection who applied to the Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology outpatient clinic between January 2019 and December 2020 were included in the study. Glucose, lipid panel, alanine amino transferase (ALT), acetyl amino transferase (AST), body mass index (BMI), TyG index, TG/HDL-C and hepatobiliary ultrasonography (USG) results were evaluated. The data were compared with the control group consisting of 308 HBsAg negative individuals. The study included 132 patients with a median age of 52 years. There was no significant difference between the patient and control groups regarding age, gender and BMI. Glucose, total cholesterol, TG, LDL, AST, ALT, TyG index and TG/HDL-C ratio were significantly higher in patient than in the control group. At the same time, the HDL value was significantly lower in the patients. There was a strong positive correlation between the TG and BMI, and a strong negative correlation between HDL levels and both TyG index and TG/HDL-C ratio. Our findings showed that the TyG index and TG/HDL-C ratio are helpful in the diagnosis of insulin resistance and hepatosteatosis in patients with HBeAg negative chronic HBV infection.

Abstract
Introduction: The increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome and physical inactivity enhances exposure to cardiometabolic risk factors in university students. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) improved cardiometabolic health in clinical adults but the evidence in the university setting is limited. Furthermore, few studies examined the effect of low-volume HIIT on habitual physical activity (PA). Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 12-week Tabata-style functional HIIT for improving multiple cardiometabolic health outcomes and habitual PA. We also investigated whether changes in habitual PA over the intervention period had an impact on exercise-induced health outcomes. Methods: 122 female freshmen were randomized into the Tabata group (n = 60) and the control (n = 62). The Tabata training protocol involved 8 × 20 s maximal repeated functional exercises followed by 10 s rest with a frequency of 3 times per week for 12 weeks. Body composition, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), blood pressure (BP), blood lipids, fasting glucose and insulin, C-reactive protein and PA were objectively measured using standardized methods. Dietary intake was measured using a valid food frequency questionnaire. All variables were measured pre- and post-intervention. Results: Mixed linear modelling results showed that there were large intervention effects on VO2max (p < 0.001, d = 2.53, 95% CI: 2.03 to 3.00 for relative VO2max; p < 0.001, d = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.76 to 2.68 for absolute VO2max), resting heart rate (p < 0.001, d = -1.82, 95% CI: -2.23 to -1.37), systolic BP (p < 0.001, d = -1.24, 95% CI: -1.63 to -0.84), moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) (p < 0.001, d = 2.31, 95% CI: 1.83 to 2.77), total PA (p < 0.001, d = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.53 to 2.41); moderate effects on %BF (p < 0.001, d = -1.15, 95% CI: -1.53 to -0.75), FM (p < 0.001, d = -1.08, 95% CI: -1.46 to -0.69), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (p < 0.001, d = 1.04, 95% CI: 0.65 to 1.42), total cholesterol (p = 0.001, d = -0.64, 95% CI: -1.00 to -0.26); small effects on BMI (p = 0.011, d = -0.48, 95% CI: -0.84 to 0.11), WC (p = 0.043, d = -0.37, 95% CI: -0.74 to -0.01), low-density lipoprotein (p = 0.003, d = -0.57, 95% CI: -0.93 to -0.19), HOMA-IR (p = 0.026, d = -0.42, 95% CI: -0.78 to -0.05) and fasting insulin (p = 0.035, d = -0.40, 95% CI: -0.76 to -0.03). Regression analysis showed that only the percentage change of HDL was associated with the change of MVPA (b = 0.326, p = 0.015) and TPA (b = 0.480, p = 0.001). Conclusion: From the findings of the study we can conclude that 12-week low-volume Tabata-style functional HIIT was highly effective for university female students to improve cardiorespiratory fitness, body fat, some cardiometabolic health outcomes and habitual PA.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MSyn) is a considerable health concern in developing and developed countries, and it is a critical predictor of all-cause mortality. Obesity, specifically central obesity, is highly associated with MSyn incidence and development. In this study, seven anthropometric indices (Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist circumference (WC), Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR), A Body Shape Index (ABSI), Body Roundness Index (BRI), conicity index (CI), and the Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI)) were used to identify individuals with MSyn among the Jordanian population. These indices were assessed to identify their superiority in predicting the risk of MSyn. A total of 756 subjects (410 were male and 346 were female) were met between May 2018 and September 2019 and enrolled in this study. Height, weight, and waist circumferences were measured and BMI, WHtR, ABSI, BRI, CI, and VAI were calculated. Fasting plasma glucose level, lipid profile, and blood pressure were measured. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the discriminatory power of the anthropometric indices as classifiers for MSyn presence using the Third Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) definition. MSyn prevalence was 42.5%, and obese women and men have a significantly higher prevalence. BRI and WHtR showed the highest ability to predict MSyn (AUC = 0.83 for both indices). The optimal cutoff point for an early diagnosis of MSyn was > 28.4 kg/m2 for BMI, > 98.5 cm for WC, > 5.13 for BRI, > 0.09 m11/6 kg-2/3 for ABSI, > 5.55 cm2 for AVI, > 1.33 m3/2 kg-1/2 for CI, and > 0.59 for WHtR with males having higher cutoff points for MSyn early detection than females. In conclusion, we found that WHtR and BRI may be the best-suggested indices for MSyn prediction among Jordanian adults. These indices are affordable and might result in better early detection for MSyn and thereby may be helpful in the prevention of MSyn and its complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The American Heart Association, in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health, annually reports the most up-to-date statistics related to heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular risk factors, including core health behaviors (smoking, physical activity, diet, and weight) and health factors (cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose control) that contribute to cardiovascular health. The Statistical Update presents the latest data on a range of major clinical heart and circulatory disease conditions (including stroke, congenital heart disease, rhythm disorders, subclinical atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, heart failure, valvular disease, venous disease, and peripheral artery disease) and the associated outcomes (including quality of care, procedures, and economic costs). METHODS The American Heart Association, through its Statistics Committee, continuously monitors and evaluates sources of data on heart disease and stroke in the United States to provide the most current information available in the annual Statistical Update. The 2022 Statistical Update is the product of a full year's worth of effort by dedicated volunteer clinicians and scientists, committed government professionals, and American Heart Association staff members. This year's edition includes data on the monitoring and benefits of cardiovascular health in the population and an enhanced focus on social determinants of health, adverse pregnancy outcomes, vascular contributions to brain health, and the global burden of cardiovascular disease and healthy life expectancy. RESULTS Each of the chapters in the Statistical Update focuses on a different topic related to heart disease and stroke statistics. CONCLUSIONS The Statistical Update represents a critical resource for the lay public, policymakers, media professionals, clinicians, health care administrators, researchers, health advocates, and others seeking the best available data on these factors and conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, China has an increasingly aging population. However, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in this high-risk population for metabolic diseases remains unknown. This study investigates the age- and gender-specific prevalence and associated factors of MetS in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese population. METHODS Data were collected and subjected to descriptive statistics. Further, univariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the relevant factors, and then multivariate logistic regression was selected to construct the final model. RESULTS A total of 10,834 participants were included in the present study. The overall prevalence of MetS is 32.97% as defined by International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and 29.75% under National Cholesterol Education Program-The Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) criteria. With aging, the prevalence of MetS descends in males while ascends in females. In the >70 years old group, the prevalence of MetS is three times higher in females than that in males (50.43% versus 16.03%). Across all age groups and sexes, the prevalence of MetS in urban areas is significantly higher than in rural areas. Besides, regardless of gender, the prevalence of MetS is the highest for those living in the north region (28.41% for males and 51.74% for females) and the lowest for those living in the southwest region (13.91% for males and 31.58% for females). Finally, an afternoon nap has been identified as a positively associated factor, while blood urea nitrogen (BUN) has been identified as a negatively associated factor (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The prevalence of MetS varies in different age groups, sexes, living areas, and regions. An afternoon nap is positively associated with the prevalence of MetS, while BUN is negatively associated with MetS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Globally developing metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence as a major health problem can be related to multiple factors of genetic and environmental. Dimethylaminohydrolase 2 (DDAH2) is the main enzyme implicated in the cardiovascular system, which regulates the nitric oxide pathway. This study investigated the association of DDAH2 polymorphism -499C/G (rs805305) with the risk of MetS among the Azar-Cohort population. METHODS The occurrence of SNP rs805305 in the DDAH2 gene was tested using the PCR-RFLP method in 332 MetS cases and 294 healthy controls. Afterward, the association of the allele and genotypes with the risk of MetS and its components were examined. RESULTS The G allele and GC genotype were significantly associated with a reduced risk of MetS (P ≤ 0.001). Also, the dominant genetic model (GG+GC) significantly decreased the risk of MetS (P = 0.001), however, in sex subtypes MetS risk was significantly reduced in males before and in females after adjustment for age (P ≤ 0.02). CONCLUSION The -499C/G polymorphism of DDAH2 may play a protective role and reduce MetS risk among the Azar-Cohort population.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION Metabolic syndrome (MS) has been increasing worldwide. The secular change in MS components, however, remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the dynamic change in metabolic health status in Chinese adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three population-based surveys using multistage stratified sampling were performed in Chinese aged 35-74 years in Shanghai in 2002-2003 (n = 12,302), 2009 (n = 7,400), and 2017 (n = 19,023). MS was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for Asian-Americans. Generalized Estimating Equations and Cochran-Armitage Trend Test was used to assess the prevalence trend over the years. RESULTS The prevalence of MS doubled in Chinese adults over the period (P for trend < 0.001). The largest increase occurred in younger men. Among MS components, the prevalence of high waist-circumference (HWC), high blood glucose (HBG) and high blood pressure (HBP) increased in all subjects, whereas the prevalence of high triglycerides (HTG) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LHC) increased in men but decreased in women. The increase in HBP contributed most to elevated MS, followed by HBG and HWC, resulting in the HBP-HBG-HWC the most common cluster of MS components. Metabolically unhealthy overweight also grew over the period. CONCLUSIONS Metabolic health status has been exacerbating in Chinese adults and may increase burden of non-communicable diseases.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the association of age and sex with metabolic syndrome (MS) in Taiwanese adults. Methods We extracted information of 4307 men and 4783 women aged 30–70 from the Taiwan Biobank. Results The interaction between age and sex on MS was significant (p-value = 0.0001). After stratification by sex, men and women aged 50–70 years (reference: 30≤age<50 years) had a higher risk of MS. The odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (CI) was 2.316, 1.936–2.772 in men and 3.101, 2.561–3.754 in women. After stratification by age, men aged 50–70 years had a lower risk of MS compared to women (OR, 95% CI = 0.713, 0.598–0.851). Conclusion The interaction between age and sex on MS was significant. Sex-wise, both men and women aged 50–70 years had a higher likelihood of MS. Age-wise, men aged 50–70 years had a lower risk of MS compared to women.

Abstract
This study examined gender differences in health behaviors for the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among middle-aged adults using nationally representative data from the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016–2018). The sample included data from 8677 middle-aged adults. The Health Practice Index measured health behaviors, including smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, sleeping, eating breakfast, working hours, nutritionally balanced diet, and mental stress. Complex sample multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the association between the Health Practice Index (HPI) and MetS. Men and women with poor or moderate HPI scores had significantly higher risks of having MetS than those with good HPI scores. Controlling for covariates, high-risk alcohol use (p < 0.001) and physical activity (p = 0.008) were associated with the risk of MetS in men and women, respectively. Men reporting alcohol use and women lacking a healthy diet were, respectively, 2.056 times (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 2.056, 95% CI: 1.681–2.514) and 1.306 times (adjusted OR = 1.306, 95% CI: 1.075–1.587) more likely to have increased risks of MetS. Given these gender differences in health behaviors, developing tailored interventions could be beneficial in preventing MetS among middle-aged men and women.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a worldwide problem with severe health consequences. In this study, we examine the changes in the prevalence of MetS and its components in two disadvantaged counties of Northeastern Hungary. Two health examination surveys were performed in the Hungarian population aged 20–64 years in 2006 (n = 450) and 2018 (n = 397) and the data were compared to each other. It was found that the prevalence of MetS increased significantly in the period examined (from 34.9% to 42.2%, p = 0.035) due to the increased prevalence of raised blood pressure (from 45.6% to 57.0%, p = 0.002) and raised fasting glucose concentration (13.2% vs. 24.8%, p < 0.001). The increase mainly affects the younger (20–34 years old) age group (12.1% in 2006 vs. 31.6% in 2018, p = 0.001). It is quite alarming that the prevalence of MetS and its components has increased significantly in the last decade, while the prevalence of preventive medication is unchanged (antihypertensive and antidiabetic treatments) or even significantly decreased (lipid-lowering medication). Consequently, the number of individuals untreated for hypertension and metabolic disturbances is severely increased. A targeted public health strategy is desperately needed to prevent further worsening the situation.
