Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dry eye disorder (DED) is a growing global issue linked to excessive digital screen time. Chinese eye exercise of acupoint (CEA), a set of self-massages on shared Chinese acupuncture (CA), has been used to reduce visual-related ocular symptoms and possibly as an alternative treatment for DED. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of CEA. METHODS A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted at Thammasat University Hospital in Thailand, recruiting 56 participants aged 20-60 years, equally divided into two groups: the treatment group with CEA and the control group with standard lid hygiene treatment (STD). The intervention program lasted 12 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer-I test (SIT), corneal surface staining (CSS), and self-recorded forms for safety and adverse effects were measured at baseline, week 4, and week 12. An independent sample t test, paired t test, and repeated measures (ANOVA) were used to compare results between both groups, study visits, and primary and secondary outcome measurements, respectively. The p values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS The characteristics were not statistically different between both groups at the baseline. The mean OSDI scores were significantly reduced in both groups at week 4 and week 12 compared to baseline (p value <0.05). Additionally, both CEA and STD showed significant improvement in TBUT and SIT (p value <0.05). CSS was significantly improved only in the CEA groups (p value <0.05). No significant differences were observed between the study groups, except for SIT at week 12 (p value <0.05). For the safety, there were no adverse side effects in either group. CONCLUSION CEA seemed to be as effective as STD in improving the OSDI, TBUT, and SIT of DED without causing any side effects. Einleitung Das Trockene Auge (Dry eye disorder, DED) ist weltweit ein zunehmendes Problem, das mit übermässiger Bildschirmarbeit zusammenhängt. Die chinesische Augenübung der Akupunkturpunkte (Chinese eye exercise of acupoint, CEA), eine Reihe von Selbstmassagen an gemeinsamen CA-Akupunkturpunkten, wird zur Linderung visusbezogener Augensymptome und als mögliche alternative Behandlung für DED eingesetzt. Mit dieser Studie sollte die Wirksamkeit und Sicherheit von CEA bewertet werden. Methoden Am Thammasat-Universitätsklinikum in Thailand wurde eine einfach verblindete, randomisierte, kontrollierte Studie mit 56 Teilnehmern im Alter von 20 bis 60 Jahren durchgeführt, die zu gleichen Teilen zwei Gruppen zugewiesen wurden: die Behandlungsgruppe mit CEA und die Kontrollgruppe, die die Standard-Lidhygienebehandlung erhielt (STD). Das Interventionsprogramm dauerte 12 Wochen. Die Haupt-Zielkriterien, der Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), die Tränenfilmaufreisszeit (tear break-up time, TBUT), der Schirmer-I-Test (SIT), das Corneal Surface Staining (CSS) und Selbstauskunftsformulare zur Sicherheit und zu unerwünschten Wirkungen wurden zu Beginn der Behandlung, in Woche 4 und in Woche 12 ermittelt. Für den Vergleich der Ergebnisse zwischen den beiden Gruppen, den Studienvisiten bzw. den primären und sekundären Zielkriterien wurden ein t Test für unabhängige Stichproben, ein t Test für paarige Stichproben und eine ANOVA mit Messwiederholungen verwendet. p-Werte <0,05 galten als statistisch signifikant. Ergebnisse Hinsichtlich der Merkmale bestand zwischen den beiden Gruppen kein statistischer Unterschied bei Studienbeginn. In beiden Gruppen fielen die mittleren OSDI-Scores in Woche 4 und Woche 12 im Vergleich zum Ausgangswert signifikant geringer aus ( p-Wert <0,05). Darüber hinaus zeigten sowohl die CEA- als auch die STD-Gruppe eine signifikante Verbesserung der TBUT- und SIT-Werte ( p-Wert <0,05). Das CSS verbesserte sich nur in der CEA-Gruppe signifikant ( p-Wert <0,05). Zwischen den Studiengruppen waren keine signifikanten Unterschiede zu beobachten, ausser beim SIT in Woche 12 ( p-Wert <0,05). Was die Sicherheit betrifft, so traten in beiden Gruppen keine unerwünschten Nebenwirkungen auf. Schlussfolgerung Die CEA schien die OSDI-, TBUT- und SIT-Werte bei DED ebenso wirksam zu verbessern wie die Standardbehandlung, ohne Nebenwirkungen zu verursachen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dry eye disease (DED) is a common ocular disorder in which the tear film cannot maintain homeostasis. Acupuncture has been used to treat DED in Korean medicine. Particularly, intradermal acupuncture (IDA) is less painful and enables free movement after treatment. However, it can also provoke allergic reactions to metal. To overcome this, biodegradable microneedle acupuncture (BMA) has been developed. This study compared BMA with traditional IDA in terms of efficacy and safety in patients with DED. METHODS This study was designed as an investigator-initiated, assessor-blinded, single-center, parallel randomized controlled trial. Thirty patients with DED were enrolled and randomized to one of the treatments. One group was treated with BMA on the acupoints, including bilateral BL2, GB14, TE23, EX-HN5, and ST1. The other group was treated with traditional IDA at the same acupoints. Treatments were conducted 3 times a week for 4 weeks. The major endpoint was ocular surface disease index (OSDI). The minor endpoints were subjective symptoms visual analog scale (VAS), quality of life (QoL), and tear production measured by the Schirmer I test. RESULTS All enrolled participants successfully completed the trial, and all of their data was analyzed. Both treatments remarkably improved the OSDI score, VAS score, QoL score, and tear secretion after 4 weeks (P < .05). Except for tear production in the left eye (P < .05), there were no statistical differences between the 2 treatments on the final visit (P > .05). No adverse events were observed. CONCLUSION BMA and IDA had the same therapeutic effect for improving DED and both were safe. BMA can be used in patients with DED as an alternative to traditional IDA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dry eye syndrome is an ocular surface disease with high incidence. Acupuncture combined with artificial tears is effective for treating dry eye syndrome. This study aimed to evaluate the evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture combined with artificial tears in dry eye syndrome by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS A systematic online search was performed from the date of database establishment to July 1, 2023. The study groups that addressed acupuncture combined with artificial tears for patients with dry eye syndrome (DES) and the control groups that addressed artificial tears were analyzed. The main outcomes were tear breakup time (BUT) and Schirmer I test (SIT), assessed as previously described. RESULTS Sixteen randomized or controlled trials met the selection criteria, and 1383 patients with DES were included in this study. The analysis results showed that BUT [Standard mean difference (SMD) = 1.25, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.14, 1.37), P < .0001], SIT [SMD = 1.55, 95% CI (1.08, 2.02), P < .0001], and corneal fluorescein staining [SMD = -2.08, 95% CI (-2.96, -1.20), P < .00001] significantly improved in the trial groups compared with the control groups. The acupuncture treatment was more effective in reducing the levels of IL-6 (P < .0001) and TNF-α (P < .00001). The overall efficacy rate was better in the trial group than in the control group [odds ratio = 4.09, 95% CI (3.04, 5.51), P < .00001]. However, no significant difference was observed in the ocular surface disease index (P = .15) between the trial and control groups. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicated that acupuncture combined with artificial tears could be considered safe, effective to patients with DES.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) has been consistently increasing yearly. However, the radical therapy has not yet been established. This study is to confirm the superiority of acupuncture over artificial tear drops (ATDs) in patients with DED. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This study is a single-centre, investigator-initiated, assessor-blinded, parallel randomised controlled trial. 30 participants will be enrolled. Over a period of 4 weeks, the experimental group would receive two kinds of acupuncture three times a week. First, body acupuncture would be performed on bilateral BL2, GB14, TE23, EX-HN5 and ST1 for 15 min. Thereafter, intradermal acupuncture would be performed on the same acupoints for 4 hours. On the other hand, the control group would apply the provided ATD at least four times a day. As a rescue medication for severe DED symptoms, both groups can additionally apply ATD. The frequency of ATD use would be recorded during the trial. The primary outcomes are the Ocular Surface Disease Index and tear film break-up time. The secondary outcomes are subjective symptom Visual Analogue Scale, quality of life, Schirmer I test, tear lactoferrin level, treatment satisfaction and safety. The outcomes would be mostly assessed at visits 1, 13 and 14. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study was approved by the institutional review board of Naju Dongshin University Korean Medicine Hospital (Approval No. NJ-IRB-23-5). The obtained results will be disseminated through publication in a peer-reviewed journal. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER KCT0008563.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dry eye (DE) is a multifactorial ocular surface disease causing considerable medical, social and financial implications. Currently, there is no recognised long-term, effective treatment to alleviate DE. Clinical evidence shows that electroacupuncture (EA) can improve DE symptoms, tear secretion and tear film stability, but it remains controversial whether it is just a placebo effect. We aim to provide solid clinical evidence for the EA treatment of DE. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a multicentre, randomised, sham-controlled trial. A total of 168 patients with DE will be enrolled and randomly assigned to EA or sham EA groups to receive 4-week consecutive treatments and follow-up for 24 weeks. The primary outcome is the change in the non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) from baseline to week 4. The secondary outcomes include tear meniscus height, the Schirmer I test, corneal and conjunctival sensation, the ocular surface disease index, corneal fluorescein staining, the numerical rating scale and the Chinese DE-related quality of life scale. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The trial protocol and informed consent were approved by the Ethics Committee of Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (identifier: 2021-119), Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center (identifier: 2022SQ003) and Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University (identifier: 2022014). Abstract
Background and Objectives: The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize the current evidence to examine the safety and effectiveness of auricular acupressure on dry eye diseases. Materials and Methods: Twenty databases were searched from their inception until November 2022. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which auricular acupressure was used for dry eye diseases were included. The selection process, data extraction and quantitative were conducted according to the guidelines. Results: Seven RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed that compared to artificial tears, auricular acupressure had a favorable effect on prolonging tear breakup time (TBUT), improving the Schirmer I test (SIT) score and the score of symptoms (SOS) of patients with dry eye disease (p < 0.05). Furthermore, compared to the artificial tears alone, auricular acupressure plus artificial tears had a significantly greater SIT score (p < 0.001) and response rate (p = 0.006), significantly longer TBUT (p < 0.001), and significantly lower Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) (p = 0.02) and SOS (p = 0.03). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the auricular acupressure plus artificial tears group and the artificial tears group in terms of cornea fluorescein staining (CFS) (p = 0.09). Conclusions: Auricular acupressure, as a sole intervention or in combination with artificial tears, may have a beneficial effect on dry eye disease. However, more high-quality RCTs need to be included in the future to further prove the positive effects of auricular acupressure on patients with dry eye disease.

Abstract
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a unique corneal stromal laser ablation method that uses an excimer laser to reach beneath corneal dome-shaped tissues. In contrast, surface ablation methods, such as photorefractive keratectomy, include removing epithelium and cutting off the Bowman's layer and the stromal tissue of the anterior corneal surface. Dry eye disease (DED) is the most common complication after LASIK. DED is a typical multi-factor disorder of the tear function and ocular surface that occurs when the eyes fail to produce efficient or adequate volumes of tears to moisturize the eyes. DED influences quality of life and visual perception, as symptoms often interfere with daily activities such as reading, writing, or using video display monitors. Generally, DED brings about discomfort, symptoms of visual disturbance, focal or global tear film instability with possible harm to the ocular surface, the increased osmolarity of the tear film, and subacute inflammation of the ocular surface. Almost all patients develop a degree of dryness in the postoperative period. Detection of preoperative DED and committed examination and treatment in the preoperative period, and continuing treatments postoperatively lead to rapid healing, fewer complications, and improved visual outcomes. To improve patient comfort and surgical outcomes, early treatment is required. Therefore, in this study, we aim to comprehensively review studies on the management and current treatment options for post-LASIK DED.

Abstract
The effectiveness of using acupuncture for dry eye disease (DED) is controversial. Thus, this systematic review investigated the effectiveness and feasibility of using acupuncture for DED in accordance with the 2020 PRISMA statement. The outcomes of interests were (1) to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in improving the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), Schirmer I test score, and tear breakup time from baseline to the last follow-up; (2) to determine possible complications of using acupuncture; and (3) to investigate the superiority of acupuncture over other commonly used treatments for DED. Data from 394 patients were collected. Results showed that acupuncture significantly prolonged the tear breakup time (P < 0.0001), significantly increased the Schirmer I test score (P < 0.0001), and significantly reduced the OSDI (P < 0.0001) from baseline to the last follow-up. Compared with the control group, the acupuncture group had significantly greater Schirmer I test score (P < 0.0001), significantly longer tear breakup time (P = 0.0004), and significantly lower OSDI (P = 0.002). These results suggest that acupuncture is effective and feasible in improving symptoms and signs of DED. No severe adverse effects of acupuncture were observed.

Abstract
Objectives This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of moxibustion with walnut shell spectacles in treating dry eye disease (DED) patients and to provide treatment options. Methods 126 DED patients were randomly allocated into the moxibustion group (treated by moxibustion with walnut shell spectacles, 64 cases) and the artificial tears group (treated with sodium hyaluronate eye drops, 62 cases). Evaluate the changes in the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), the visual analogue scale (VAS) of ocular discomfort, the tear film break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), and the Schirmer I test during the trial at baseline and after 1-week, 2-week, 3-week, and 4-week treatment. Evaluate the OSDI scale and the ocular symptom VAS scale one month after the end of treatment. Results There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. For OSDI scores, the results showed that the efficacy of the moxibustion group was no less than that of the artificial tear group. For VAS of ocular discomfort, both groups significantly reduced their score compared with baseline, and for the moxibustion group, the decrease was more significant. For TBUT, FAS, and PPS, results showed that the efficacy of the moxibustion group was significant in both eyes after 4 weeks of treatment, but the right eye was in the artificial tear group. For CFS and Schirmer I test scores, there was no significant effect for both groups. Conclusion Moxibustion with walnut shell spectacles could improve the clinical symptoms and tear film stability of DED patients; however, it has no significant efficacy on improving corneal injury and tear secretion, just the same as sodium hyaluronate eye drops. Nevertheless, moxibustion with walnut shell spectacles may have better effects on the self-assessment of ocular discomfort than sodium hyaluronate eye drops.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of dry eye, which is a common lacrimal disease, is steadily increasing in modern society. However, fundamental treatment for it has not yet been established. This study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of a novel medical device, the biodegradable microneedle acupuncture (BMA), using a traditional intradermal acupuncture needle as the control acupuncture for dry eye. METHOD This study will be an investigator-initiated, assessor-blinded, comparative, superiority pilot randomized controlled trial. A total of 30 patients with dry eye will be randomly assigned to the experimental or the control group in equal proportion. For the experimental group, the BMA will be applied to both sides of 5 acupoints including BL2, GB14, TE23, EX-HN5, and ST1. For the control group, conventional intradermal acupuncture will be applied to the same acupoints. The needles will be attached for 4 hours. Over 4 weeks, both the interventions will be performed 12 times in total. The primary outcome would be the ocular surface disease index. The secondary outcomes would be the visual analog scale for subjective symptoms, quality of life, Schirmer I test, and general assessment. DISCUSSION The findings of this study on the efficacy and safety of the BMA would be helpful for patients with dry eye in clinical practice. Further, these results would provide for the foundation of a large-scale BMA study.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the efficacy of acupuncture in patients with post-cataract surgery dry eye disease (DED). METHODS Ninety participants with post-cataract surgery DED were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive true acupuncture (n = 44) or non-penetrating sham acupuncture (n = 46) twice weekly for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was the change from baseline to week 8 in the noninvasive tear film break-up time (TFBUT). Participants were followed until week 12. Secondary outcomes included Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, tear meniscus height (TMH), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) score, meiboscore and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA). RESULTS The estimated mean change from baseline in the noninvasive TFBUT was 1.52 for true acupuncture versus 0.77 for sham acupuncture (adjusted difference -0.75 [95% CI -1.39 to -0.12]; P = 0.02) at week 8 and 1.49 for true acupuncture versus 0.81 for sham acupuncture (adjusted difference -0.68 [95% CI, -1.29 to -0.07]; P = 0.029) at week 12. The mean change in the OSDI score was -20.13 for true acupuncture versus -13.44 for sham acupuncture (adjusted difference 6.69 [95% CI, 0.64 to 12.74]; P = 0.031) at week 8, but revealed no statistically between-group differences at week 12. Mean changes in TMH, CFS score, meiboscore and CDVA did not differ significantly between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Among patients with post-cataract surgery DED, acupuncture compared with sham acupuncture resulted in statistically significant benefit on tear film stability. Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to assess the efficacy of electroacupuncture on dry eye (DE). METHODS Eighty-four DE patients were randomly assigned to receive electroacupuncture (EAG) three times a week or 0.1% sodium hyaluronate artificial tears (ATG) four times per day for 4 weeks. The primary outcomes were non-invasive tear film breakup time (NIBUT) and tear meniscus height (TMH). The secondary outcomes included the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), Schirmer I test (SIT), corneal sodium fluorescein staining (CFS) score, corneal topography descriptors surface asymmetry index (SAI) and surface regularity index (SRI), corneal sensitivity, 36-item Short-form Health Survey (SF-36) score and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) score. All outcomes were assessed at Week 0 (baseline), Week 4 (after-treatment) and Week 8 (follow-up). RESULTS Between-group comparisons showed significant differences in the changes in NIBUT (Week 4, p = 0.003; Week 8, p = 0.008), TMH (Week 4, p = 0.014; Week 8, p = 0.009), OSDI (Week 4, p = 0.029; Week 8, p = 0.022), CFS score (Week 8, p = 0.036) and SF-36 role-physical score (Week 4, p = 0.010), favouring EAG. Mean changes in SIT, SAI, SRI, corneal sensitivity and HADS scores were statistically equal between the two groups (all p > 0.05). Treatment with electroacupuncture was well-tolerated and showed minimal adverse events. CONCLUSIONS Compared with artificial tears, electroacupuncture shows superior efficacy in improving tear film stability and symptoms of DE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global incidence of dry eye disease (DED) is very high. DED seriously affects the quality of life of patients; however, the current curative effect of medicine for moderate to severe DED is poor. This randomized clinical trial was planned to investigate the effect of acupuncture compared with artificial tears (AT) on moderate to severe DED. METHODS A randomized clinical trial was performed at 2 hospitals in China. 120 DED patients were randomly equally divided into an acupuncture and an artificial tear group. Either acupuncture or artificial tears was performed for an 8-week period, and a 24-week follow-up was performed. The primary outcome measure was the Schirmer-I test (SIT) change from baseline. The secondary outcome measures included the numerical rating scale (NRS) change from baseline for improvement in ocular symptoms, the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), the tear-film break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), and acupuncture acceptability. Adverse events also were monitored and documented. RESULTS For the primary outcome, the mean changes from baseline in the SIT values were significantly different between the acupuncture (5.75 [2.53-9.75]) and AT (0.52 [- 1.18-2.46]) groups at week 8 with a between difference of 5.23 (P < 0.05). Between-group differences of 8.49 in OSDI score change from baseline differed significantly at week 8 (P < 0.05). However, between-group differences of the changes in the average symptom NRS score, TBUT, and CFS did not differ significantly at week 8. Five cases experienced acupuncture-related adverse events. CONCLUSIONS This randomized clinical trial found that acupuncture at BL1 significantly promoted tear secretion. Acupuncture showed greater benefits than AT for moderate to severe DED. Abstract
Acupuncture is a treatment option for dry eye syndrome (DES), but its efficacy remains still controversial. We assessed the effectiveness of this treatment for typical DES without specific aetiologies. Eight databases up through June 2018 were searched for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing treatments of acupuncture with artificial tears. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane criteria, and a random effects model was used for meta-analyses on tear-film breakup time (BUT), Schirmer test, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), ocular surface disease index, visual analogue scale and score of symptoms (SOS). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to explore the heterogeneity, and publication bias was assessed by funnel plot using Egger's test. Twenty-one RCTs in 19 studies (n = 1542 eyes) met our eligible criteria. The results demonstrated the superiority of acupuncture in improving the symptoms of BUT, Schirmer test, CFS and SOS, compared to artificial tears acting alone. The BUT and Schirmer test were also more improved in acupuncture combination with artificial tears than artificial tears alone. Further subgroup analyses suggest that acupuncture applied at 2.0-3.0 times per week for 21-30 days may be optimal for treating typical DES. This provides useful information for guiding acupuncture in the clinical trials.

Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the efficacy of laser acupuncture (LA) therapy in patients with dry eye disease (DED). Design: A two-center randomized controlled trial. Settings/Location: The Department of Ophthalmology, Chinese Medicine at the Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and the Sunming Eye Clinic in South Taiwan. Subjects: Fifty-nine participants ages 20 to 65 years were enrolled and randomly assigned to the experimental group (LA plus conventional treatment) or the sham control group (LA without laser output plus conventional treatment). Interventions: Subjects underwent LA treatment three times a week for 12 weeks. The subjects in the experimental group sequentially received 0.375 J of energy at each of the following acupoints: BL2, TE23, ST2, LI4, ST36, and GB37. Subjects in the control group received a sham LA treatment, without any laser output. Outcome Measures: The primary outcome measure was ocular surface disease index (OSDI). The secondary outcome measures included tear film breakup time (TFBUT), Schirmer-I test finding, and visual analog scale (VAS) score. Results: At 4 and 12 weeks after the first visit, the experimental group showed significant improvement of dry eye symptoms as measured by OSDI, TFBUT, Shirmer-I test, and VAS. Compared with the control group, the OSDI (7.23, p = 0.001) and TFBUT (-1.78, p = 0.001) significantly improved in the experimental group at 12 weeks of treatment. Conclusions: LA improved the symptoms and tear stability related to DED in conjunction with conventional treatment. The authors suggest that LA be considered a complementary therapy for DED when conventional treatment does not provide satisfactory effects. Abstract
BACKGROUND As a common ophthalmic disease, dry eye (DE) may bring several adverse effects on the quality of life for patients. In recent years, Acupuncture (AC) is becoming increasingly popular for treating DE. Thus, we conceived this systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of AC for DE objectively. METHODS The search results are restricted to randomized controlled trials and human studies. We will establish the inclusion criteria through discussion and design a detailed literature search strategy for each database. Articles are searched from 4 English databases (the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE) and 4 Chinese databases (Wangfang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Chinese scientific and technical journals database). The relevant studies published from the date of database inception until January 2020 will be collected. We will also search (International Clinical Trials Registry Platform), PROSPERO, and potential gray literature. Two reviewers independently perform literature screening, information extraction, and assessment of study quality. The outcome measures include primary outcome measures (Schirmer I test and break-up time), secondary outcome measures (Ocular Surface Disease Index, corneal fluorescein staining, and tear osmolarity), and safety outcome measures. Assessment of bias risk and data processing are performed using RevMan 5.3 software ( the Nordic Cochrane Centre, Copenhagen, Denmark). RESULTS We will evaluate the curative effect of AC for DE comprehensively based on multiple outcome measures. Abstract
BACKGROUND The global prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) ranged from 5% to 50%, accompanied by the yearly increasing trend and younger onset. To date artificial tear serves as a mainstay therapy for DED management. It is noteworthy that, acupuncture has been accepted for treating DED with a time-honored history in China. However, no systematic review has been updated till now, which is focusing on comparing acupuncture vs. artificial tears for DED management. METHODS Eight databases will be searched with the language restrictions of English and Chinese from their inception to July 1, 2020. Randomized controlled trials comparing acupuncture versus artificial tears for DED treatment were enrolled. Identification, research inclusion, data extraction and assessment of the risk of bias were conducted independently by 2 or more reviewers. The primary outcomes were Schirmer I test and tear break-up time. We used Review Manager Software (v.5.3) for assessing the risk of bias and all statistical analyses. RESULTS Based on the evidence obtained, whether the effect of acupuncture was equal to or even better than that of artificial tear therapy in the treatment of DED would be elaborated. CONCLUSION In summary, this review would provide a relatively convincing conclusion on whether acupuncture deserves to be recommended as an adjunct treatment for DED, so as to propose some significant insights for the doctors handling with DED. Abstract
Background Dry eye syndrome is the most common complication of refractive surgery. Acupuncture is widely used for the treatment of ophthalmologic diseases, but to date, few have explored the effects of acupuncture for the treatment of this condition following refractive surgery. The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of a study design for evaluating the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment along with usual care compared with usual care only for dry eye syndrome after refractive surgery. Methods A total of 18 patients with dry eye syndrome occurring after refractive surgery participated in this study. For 4 weeks, the acupuncture plus usual care and usual care only groups received treatment three times a week. A series of assessments, namely the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), visual analog scale for ocular discomfort, quality of life, tear film break-up time, Schirmer 1 test, and fluorescein-stained corneal-surface photography, along with other general assessments were carried out. Results Although preliminary, changes in OSDI from the baseline values were significantly different between the two groups at week 5 (p = 0.0003). There was a significant difference in the trends of OSDI changes between the acupuncture plus usual care and the usual care only groups (p = 0.0039). No serious adverse events were reported during the study. Conclusion Four weeks of acupuncture treatment in addition to usual care is a feasible treatment for dry eye syndrome after refractive surgery. A full-scale randomized controlled trial is needed to confirm the clinical effectiveness of acupuncture.

Abstract
The effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of dry eye has been confirmed, but the association between acupoint selection and therapeutic effect has remained to be elucidated. In the present study, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to evaluate the effect of periocular acupoints and periocular acupoints plus body acupoints compared with AT for the treatment of dry eye disease (DED). The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Ovid, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chonqing VIP Information, Co., Ltd. databases were searched with entries until 10 July 2018 considered. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Meta-analyses were performed to compare the effects of acupuncture with those of conventional treatment (including AT or other non-acupuncture therapies). The primary outcomes, including tear break-up time (BUT), Schirmer's I test (SIT) result and Symptom scores were analyzed. Subgroup analysis was performed for periocular acupoints only and periocular acupoints plus body acupoints. A total of 12 studies comprising 900 participants were included. In the primary meta-analysis, a significant improvement in the BUT [n=1,209, weighted mean difference (WMD)=1.01, 95% CI: 0.56-1.84, P<0.00001], SIT result (n=1,107, WMD=1.98, 95% CI: 0.44-3.34, P<0.00001) and Symptom scores (n=402, WMD=-1.02, 95% CI: -1.33 to -0.72, P<0.00001) was obtained to evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture and AT. Furthermore, periocular acupoints plus body acupoints were more effective in the treatment of DED. However, the total sample size of subjects with only periocular acupoints in the treatment of DED was too small to get any firm conclusions. Further large RCTs are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dry eye disease is a disorder of the tear film. In this study, the effect of Viola odorata L. oily extract was examined for the treatment of patients suffering from dry eye disease. METHODS A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was designed. During the trial, Schirmer's test, tear breakup time, Oxford staining and the Ocular Surface Disease Index were assessed. Overall, 105 patients with dry eye symptoms between the ages of 18 and 60 years were allocated to the violet-almond oil, almond oil and placebo (1% w/v hydroxypropyl methylcellulose solution) groups. The treatment and placebo were administered intranasally, two drops three times a day for one month. The patients were followed up for four weeks. A total of 91 patients (32, 29 and 30 in the violet-almond oil, almond oil and placebo groups, respectively) completed the study. RESULTS At baseline, there was no difference between the three groups in terms of demographic data and the measurement parameters. After the intervention, the results revealed that the Schirmer's score without local anaesthesia and the tear breakup time results significantly improved in the violet-almond oil group. One-way ANOVA indicated a significant improvement in the Schirmer's score, tear breakup time and Ocular Surface Disease Index of the treatment group, as compared with the other groups (p < 0.05). However, the obtained results did not present any significant mean difference between and within the groups of the Oxford staining grade (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This trial showed that the intranasally administered V. odorata L. oily extract enhances tear production and improves tear film stability.

Abstract
Purpose: Dry eye disease (DED) is a common disorder that negatively impacts quality of life and vision. Prior studies have shown some benefit of acupuncture for dry eye, but very few have included control group to mitigate placebo effect. This study was designed with a sham acupuncture control group to evaluate true acupuncture treatment effect. Methods: This is a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, sham-acupuncture-controlled trial. Acupuncture treatment for dry eye was performed as per the Niemtzow Protocol. Twenty-four patients received true acupuncture and twenty-five received sham acupuncture. Treatment efficacy was assessed by the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) Questionnaire, ocular surface staining, tear flow, tear film break-up time (TBUT), and a general questionnaire. Atmospheric data were collected to control for the effect of atmospheric conditions on symptoms of dry eye. Results: OSDI scores in the treatment group improved compared to baseline (1 week, p<0.01, 1 month p<0.05, 3 months p<0.05, and 6 months p<0.01). OSDI scores in the control group improved, but did not reach significance (p=0.09). Secondary outcome measures showed no significant improvement in TBUT, Schiermer’s Test, ocular surface grading, or artificial tear application. However, at 3 months, a significant reduction in the frequency of eye closing was observed among participants receiving true acupuncture treatment when compared to baseline (p=0.002). Furthermore, intragroup analysis showed significant reduction in symptoms of discomfort (p=0.01), dryness (p=0.001), scratchiness (p=0.001), and redness (p=0.01) in the true acupuncture group at 3 months. Conclusion: Both true and sham acupuncture improved OSDI at 1 week after treatment, however, the improvement in OSDI was significantly greater in the true treatment groups than the sham group at 6 months after acupuncture. True acupuncture treatment improved many subjective assessments of dry eye symptoms, however, other common indicators used to objectively assess dry eye (tear flow, corneal staining, TBUT) remained unchanged. While there were trends towards improvement in the sham acupuncture group, this did not reach statistical significant during the study period. This suggests a true treatment effect of acupuncture rather than a placebo effect. Acupuncture can, therefore, be an effective adjunct to routine clinical treatment of dry eye.

Abstract
Objectives. This systematic review aims to critically evaluate the efficacy of manual acupuncture for optic atrophy. Eight English and Chinese databases, including Cochrane Library, EMbase, PubMed, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), as well as ongoing trials registered with the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, were searched to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) studying manual acupuncture for optic atrophy compared to medication alone. The quality of evidence was assessed using Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager version 5.3. Nine studies were identified and included for meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed significant differences in favor of manual acupuncture or manual acupuncture plus medication compared with medication alone in the following outcome measures: visual acuity (MD = 0.18, 95% CI [0.17, 0.20], P < 0.00001), mean sensitivity of visual field (MD = 2.11, 95% CI [1.90, 2.32], P < 0.00001), the latent period of P-VEP100 (MD = -6.80, 95% CI [-8.94, -4.66], P < 0.00001), the total effectiveness (264 eyes) (OR = 3.22, 95% CI [1.88, 5.51], P<0.0001), and the total effectiveness (344 participants) (OR = 4.29, 95% CI [2.56, 7.19], P < 0.00001). Despite statistical advantages of manual acupuncture in the literature, due to serious methodological flaws in study design, it cannot be concluded that manual acupuncture is more effective than medicine alone. It is essential that a properly controlled clinical trial is designed and controls are established to exclude placebo effects.

Abstract
Objective Dry eye is a common disease with great health burden and no satisfactory treatment. Traditional Chinese medicine, an increasingly popular form of complementary medicine, has been used to treat dry eye but studies have been inconclusive. To address this issue, we conducted a randomised investigator-masked study which included the robust assessment of disease mechanisms. Methods and analysis Eligible participants (total 150) were treated with artificial tear (AT) alone, with added eight sessions of acupuncture (AC) or additional daily oral herb (HB) over a month. Results Participants treated with AC were more likely to respond symptomatically than those on AT (88% vs 72%, p=0.039) with a difference of 16% (95% CI: 0.18 to 31.1). The number-to-treat with AC to achieve response in one person was 7 (3 to 157). Participants in the AC group also had reduced conjunctival redness (automatic grading with Oculus keratograph) compared with AT (p=0.043) and reduced tear T helper cell (Th1)-cytokine tumour necrosis factor α (p=0.027) and Th2-cytokine interleukin 4 concentrations (p=0.038). AC was not significantly superior to AT in other outcomes such as tear osmolarity, tear evaporation rates, corneal staining and tear break-up times. No significant adverse effects were encountered. HB was not significantly different in the primary outcome from AT (80% vs 72%, p=0.26). Conclusions AC is safe and provides additional benefit in mild to moderate dry eye up to 1 month, compared with ATs alone. Treatment is associated with demonstrable molecular evidence of reduced inflammation. Provided that suitably qualified practitioners are available to implement standardised treatment, AC may be recommended as adjunctive therapy to AT. Abstract
BACKGROUND Dry eye disease (DED) is a very common disease. Although several current treatments offer some symptomatic relief, moderate to severe DED is still difficult to cure at present. Acupuncture may be effective for DED via its promotion of tear secretion and ability to improve symptoms, but evidence of its effectiveness is limited. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of acupuncture versus artificial tears in moderate to severe DED. METHODS/DESIGN A total of 120 participants with moderate to severe DED will be randomly assigned to either an acupuncture group or an artificial tear group at a ratio of 1:1. Participants in the acupuncture group will undergo treatments on a single BL1 acupuncture point 3 times per week for 8 weeks. Participants in the control group will use artificial tears 4 times per day for 8 weeks. The primary outcome will be the change from baseline in a mean Schirmer-I test (SIT) at week 8. The secondary outcomes will include the visual analog score (VAS) for the improvement of ocular symptoms, the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), the tear film break-up time (TBUT), and corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) at weeks 4, 8, and 32. Acupuncture acceptance will be evaluated at week 8. Adverse events will also be monitored and documented. A follow-up assessment will be conducted 24 weeks after the treatment. DISCUSSION We expect to verify that acupuncture is better than artificial tears toward improving the mean SIT values of patients with moderate to severe DED.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dry eye is a common ophthalmologic disorder that causes ocular discomfort and has become a worldwide health concern. Patients with dry eye often turn to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) because of unsatisfactory conventional treatments. Acupuncture is one of the most popular interventions of CAM used, and laser acupuncture (LA) is a noninvasive technique. METHODS This protocol is a 2-center randomized controlled trial investigating the effect of laser acupuncture on dry eye. Two hundred participants aged 20 to 65 years will be randomly assigned to the experimental group (LA plus conventional treatment) or the sham control group (LA without laser output plus conventional treatment) at 2 clinical research centers in South Taiwan. The subjects will undergo LA treatment thrice a week for 12 weeks. The subjects in the experimental group will sequentially receive 0.375 J of energy at each of the following acupoints: BL2, TE23, ST2, LI4, ST36, and GB37. The subjects in the control group will also receive a sham LA treatment, without any laser output. Outcome assessments will include evaluation of the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), tear film break-up time (TFBUT), Schirmer-I test finding, and the visual analog scale (VAS) score at 4 and 12 weeks before treatment. The OSDI, TFBUT, Schirmer-I test result, and VAS score of the participants will be analyzed and compared between the experimental and control groups using the paired t test and one-way analysis of variance. OBJECTIVES The aim of this protocol is to investigate the efficacy of LA therapy in patients with dry eye. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03204903.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In a former meta-analysis review, acupuncture was considered a potentially effective treatment for dry eye syndrome (DES), but there were heterogeneities among the outcomes. We updated the meta-analysis and conducted subgroup analysis to reduce the heterogeneity and suggest the most effective acupuncture method based on clinical trials. METHODS We searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in 10 databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTAL, AMED, SCOPUS, CNKI, Wangfang database, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS), Koreamed, J-stage) and searched by hand to compare the effects of acupuncture and artificial tears (AT). We also conducted subgroup analysis by (1) method of intervention (acupuncture only or acupuncture plus AT), (2) intervention frequency (less than 3 times a week or more than 3 times a week), (3) period of treatment (less than 4 weeks or more than 4 weeks), and (4) acupoints (BL1, BL2, ST1, ST2, TE23, Ex-HN5). The Bucher method was used for subgroup comparisons. RESULTS Nineteen studies with 1126 patients were included. Significant improvements on the Schirmer test (weighted mean difference[WMD], 2.14; 95% confidence interval[CI], 0.93 to 3.34; p = 0.0005) and break up time (BUT) (WMD, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.79 to 1.18; p < 0.00001) were reported. In the subgroup analysis, acupuncture plus AT treatment had a weaker effect in BUT but a stronger effect on the Schirmer test and a better overall effect than acupuncture alone. For treatment duration, treatment longer than 1 month was more effective than shorter treatment. With regard to treatment frequency, treatment less than three times a week was more effective than more frequent treatment. In the acupoint analysis, acupuncture treatment including the BL2 and ST1 acupoints was less effective than treatment that did not include them. None of those factors reduced the heterogeneity. CONCLUSIONS Acupuncture was more effective than AT in treating DES but showed high heterogeneity. Intervention differences did not influence the heterogeneity.

Abstract
Myopia is a condition of the eye where parallel rays focus in front of, instead of on, the retina, which results in excessive refractive power of the cornea or the lens or eyeball elongation. Studies carried out in recent years show that the etiology of myopia is complex with genetic and environmental factors playing a role. Refraction defects decrease the quality of vision, while progressing myopia can lead to partial loss of vision, which can be particularly dramatic in young adults. Therefore, it is so crucial to take appropriate actions aimed at preventing myopia progression. This is a review of nonpharmacological therapeutic possibilities of refraction defect prevention in young adults, with special regard to myofascial therapy, osteopathy, and massage of acupuncture points surrounding the eye.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Not many studies have investigated individual sensitivity to acupuncture. To explore the intrinsic factors related to individual responses to acupuncture, we reviewed published pre-clinical studies using responder analysis on pain. METHODS We searched the PubMed and EMBASE databases to June 2015. We included pre-clinical reports describing responders and non-responders to anti-nociceptive and analgesic effects of acupuncture in animal study. We identified the potential intrinsic factors which might be related with the response to acupuncture. RESULTS Totally, 216 potentially relevant articles were retrieved and 14 studies met our inclusion criteria. Rat (n = 1348) and rabbit (n = 56) were used, and only electroacupuncture (EA) was applied as an intervention. Results showed that high levels of cholecystokinin-8 and receptors were associated with poor responsiveness to EA. Endogenous opioids including β-endorphin and met-enkephalin, descending inhibitory norepinephrine and serotonin system, and hypothalamic 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase seemed to be associated with high-level responses. Spinal levels of neurotransmitters and pro-inflammatory cytokines were also differentially expressed depending on the EA sensitiveness. In the central nervous system, hypothalamus, periaqueductal grey, pituitary gland, and spinal cord were suggested to be involved in the EA responsiveness. Identified individual variations did not seem to be accidental, as the responsiveness to EA was replicated over time. However, methodological issues such as reproducibility, cut-off criteria, and clinical relevance need to be further elaborated. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that the identification of the biological factors differentiating responders from non-responders is necessary and it may aid in understanding how acupuncture modulates pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to investigate whether acupuncture is effective at treating dry eye disease among postmenopausal women and to identify the possible mechanisms. METHODS Twenty-eight postmenopausal women with dry eye disease were randomly divided into two groups: an acupuncture plus artificial tears (AC + AT) group and an artificial tears (AT) only group. After baseline examination of clinical parameters and tear sample collection, each patient received the designated modality of topical therapy for 2 months. Post-treatment documentation of clinical parameters was recorded, and tear samples were collected. Tear samples from the AC + AT group were subjected to two-dimensional nano-liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (2D nano-LC-MS/MS). Western blot analysis was also performed on tear samples from both groups. RESULTS After treatment, the Ocular Surface Disease Index scores, symptom assessment scores, scores of sign assessment, and tear break-up time were significantly improved in both groups (P=0.000). Symptom assessment scores were significantly improved in the AC + AT group (P=0.000) compared with the AT group. 2D nano-LC-MS/MS identified 2,411 proteins, among which 142 were downregulated and 169 were upregulated. After combined AC + AT treatment, the abundance of secreted proteins was increased, whereas that of cytoplasmic proteins decreased (Pearson's χ2 test, P=0.000, P=0.000, respectively). Proteins involved in immunity and regulation were also more abundant (Pearson's χ2 test, P=0.040, P=0.016, respectively), while components and proliferation-related proteins were downregulated (Pearson's χ2 test, P=0.003, P=0.011, respectively). CONCLUSION AC + AT treatment increased protein synthesis and secretion, and improved clinical symptoms. These results indicate that acupuncture may be a complimentary therapy for treating postmenopausal dry eye disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the effects of acupuncture at Erjian on chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). STUDY DESIGN Prospective case series. METHODS Nine patients with chronic CSC were recruited and each patient received 12 sessions of acupuncture treatment. Subjective symptom measures included complications, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fluorescein leakage (via fluorescein fundus angiography), and central subfield foveal subretinal fluid (on optical coherence tomography (OCT)) at 3 months. Successful treatment was defined as the complete resolution of subretinal fluid observed by the OCT following completion of treatment. RESULTS After 2 months of treatment, two patients showed improvements in visual acuity, a significant reduction in subretinal fluid and an improvement in BCVA to 0.5±0.10 (mean±SD). By contrast, four patients experienced no significant changes. After 3 months of treatment, four patients showed improvements in visual acuity and complete resolution of the subretinal fluid (mean BCVA=0.6), while parameters in two patients remained unchanged. Compared to baseline (before treatment), the proportions of patients experiencing visual improvement at 2 and 3 months were 33% (n=2) and 67% (n=4), respectively. No major complications were observed during the treatment course. CONCLUSIONS Acupuncture might be a promising supplementary therapy for patients with CSC. However, this is ultimately only an exploratory study with a small sample size and no untreated comparator group to control for the natural history of the condition. Randomised controlled trials will be needed to demonstrate the efficacy and effectiveness of this approach.

Abstract
Acupuncture is an alternative therapy that is widely used to treat various diseases. However, detailed biological interpretation of the acupuncture stimulations is limited. We here used metabolomics and proteomics technology, thereby identifying the serum small molecular metabolites into the effect and mechanism pathways of standardized acupuncture treatments at ‘Zusanli’ acupoint which was the most often used acupoint in previous reports. Comprehensive overview of serum metabolic profiles during acupuncture stimulation was investigated. Thirty-four differential metabolites were identified in serum metabolome and associated with ten metabolism pathways. Importantly, we have found that high impact glycerophospholipid metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, ether lipid metabolism were acutely perturbed by acupuncture stimulation. As such, these alterations may be useful to clarify the biological mechanism of acupuncture stimulation. A series of differentially expressed proteins were identified and such effects of acupuncture stimulation were found to play a role in transport, enzymatic activity, signaling pathway or receptor interaction. Pathway analysis further revealed that most of these proteins were found to play a pivotal role in the regulation of multiple metabolism pathways. It demonstrated that the metabolomics coupled with proteomics as a powerful approach for potential applications in understanding the biological effects of acupuncture stimulation.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of Chinese eye exercises on reducing accommodative lag in children by a randomized, double-blinded controlled trial. Methods A total of 190 children aged 10 to 14 years with emmetropia to moderate myopia were included. They were randomly allocated to three groups: standard Chinese eye exercises group (trained for eye exercises by doctors of traditional Chinese medicine); sham point eye exercises group (instructed to massage on non-acupoints); and eyes closed group (asked to close their eyes without massage). Primary outcome was change in accommodative lag immediately after intervention. Secondary outcomes included changes in corrected near and distant visual acuity, and visual discomfort score. Results Children in the standard Chinese eye exercises group had significantly greater alleviation of accommodative lag (-0.10D) than those in sham point eye exercises group (-0.03D) and eyes closed group (0.07D) (P = 0.04). The proportion of children with alleviation of accommodative lag was significantly higher in the standard Chinese eye exercises group (54.0%) than in the sham point eye exercises group (32.8%) and the eyes closed group (34.9%) (P = 0.03). No significant differences were found in secondary outcomes. Conclusion Chinese eye exercises as performed daily in primary and middle schools in China have statistically but probably clinically insignificant effect in reducing accommodative lag of school-aged children in the short-term. Considering the higher amounts of near work load of Chinese children, the efficacy of eye exercises may be insufficient in preventing myopia progression in the long-term. Abstract
Dry eye is highly prevalent and has a significant impact on quality of life. Acupuncture was found to be effective to treat dry eye. However, little was known about the effect of acupuncture on different subtypes of dry eye. The objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of tear meniscus assessment by Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography in the evaluation of acupuncture treatment response in dry eye patients and to explore the effect of acupuncture on different subtypes of dry eye compared with artificial tear treatment. A total of 108 dry eye patients were randomized into acupuncture or artificial tear group. Each group was divided into three subgroups including lipid tear deficiency (LTD), Sjögren syndrome dry eye (SSDE), and non-Sjögren syndrome dry eye (Non-SSDE) for data analysis. After 4-week treatment, the low tear meniscus parameters including tear meniscus height (TMH), tear meniscus depth (TMD), and tear meniscus area (TMA) in the acupuncture group increased significantly for the LTD and Non-SSDE subgroups compared with both the baseline and the control groups (all P values < 0.05), but not for the SSDE. Acupuncture provided a measurable improvement of the tear meniscus dimensions for the Non-SSDE and LTD patients, but not for the SSDE patients.

Abstract
Background. The efficacy of acupuncture in dry eye syndrome patients remains controversial. Methods. Pubmed, Ovid, Cochrane libraries, CNKI, Wanfang, and CQVIP databases were electronically searched until October 1, 2014. Outcomes including tear break-up time (BUT), Schirmer I test (SIT), and cornea fluorescein staining (CFS) were analyzed. A meta-analysis was performed using both fixed- and random-effects models based on heterogeneity across studies. Results. Seven studies were included in this study; 198 and 185 patients were randomly treated with acupuncture and artificial tears, respectively. The overall BUT of patients in acupuncture group was significantly longer than that of the artificial tears group after treatment (P < 0.00001). The SIT was significantly higher in the acupuncture group than that in the artificial tears group after treatment (P = 0.001). The CFS of patients in acupuncture group was significantly improved compared to that in artificial group (P < 0.0001). Conclusions. Acupuncture therapy is effective for the dry eye patients, partly better than artificial tear treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dry eye syndrome is a frequent complication of refractive surgery. Acupuncture has been widely used to alleviate the associated symptoms. However, the use of acupuncture for patients who suffer from dry eye syndrome following refractive surgery has certain drawbacks. This pilot study aims to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture treatment in treating the signs and symptoms of dry eye syndrome after refractive surgery. METHODS/DESIGN Forty participants will be randomly assigned to the acupuncture plus usual care group or the usual care control group. The acupuncture plus usual care group will undergo treatments on seventeen acupuncture points, three times per week for four weeks. The control group will receive only usual care during the same period. The primary outcomes will be scores on the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and the results of examinations at 1, 3, 5, and 13 weeks. The secondary outcomes will be Tear Film Break-up Time (TBUT), as well as scores on the Schirmer-I test, visual analog scale (VAS), and quality of life (QOL) questionnaire for the self-assessment of ocular discomfort. Digital photographs will be taken to document the pattern of fluorescein staining observed on the corneal surface. The results of the Schirmer-I test, TBUT, and fluorescein-stained corneal surface digital photographs will be assessed at the screening and at week 13. VAS scores will be assessed at the screening, as well as at 1, 3, 5, and 13 weeks. QOL will be evaluated at 1, 3, 5, and 13 weeks. DISCUSSION This trial will provide primary data with which to investigate the clinical effectiveness and safety of acupuncture treatment for dry eye syndrome after refractive surgery.
