Emerging trends and hotspots of the itch research: A bibliometric and visualized analysis

AIMS

Itch, a common uncomfortable sensory experience, occurs frequently in inflammatory or allergic disorders. In recent years, with the discovery of itch-specific pathways in the peripheral and central nervous system, the association between immunology and neural pathways has gradually emerged as the main mechanism of itch. Although many studies have been conducted on itch, no bibliometric analysis study focusing on this topic has been conducted. This study aimed to explore the research hotspots and trends in the itch field from a bibliometric perspective.

METHODS

Publications relevant to itch, published from 2003 to 2022, were retrieved from the Science Citation Index-Expanded of Web of Science Core Collection. Publications were critically reviewed and analyzed with CiteSpace software, Vosviewer, and the bibliometric online analysis platform. Visual maps were conducted in terms of annual production, collaborating countries or institutions, productive authors, core journals, co-cited references, and keyword bursts.

RESULTS

2395 articles on itch that met our criteria were identified and the quantity of publications has been increasing rapidly since 2012. The USA was the most influential country. University Hospital Münster was the institution with the most publications. Gil Yosipovitch was the most prolific author. Atopic dermatitis (AD), intradermal serotonin, chronic pruritus, mechanical itch, gastrin-releasing peptide, substance p, interleukin-31 receptor, histamine-induced itch, bile acid, scratching behavior, and h-4 receptor were the top 11 clusters in co-citation cluster analysis. Keyword burst analysis suggested that treatment, inflammation, and AD are current research hotspots.

CONCLUSION

Global publications on itch research have increased steadily and rapidly over the past 20 years. Inflammation and AD are current research hotspots. The neuroimmunological and neuroinflammatory mechanisms of itch, as well as clinical assessment methods and therapeutic targets, will be novel research directions in the future. This study provides guidance for further itch research.

Bibliometric analysis of breast cancer-related lymphedema research trends over the last 2 decades

Objective

As breast cancer cases rise globally, post-mastectomy lymphedema garners increasing scholarly attention. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema (BCRL) research from 2003 to 2022, identifying trends and providing global research insights for future studies.

Method

The literature for this analysis was extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection, encompassing 1199 publications, including 702 articles and 101 reviews, totaling 803. Using advanced bibliometric tools such as VOSviewer and CiteSpace, quantitative and visual analyses were performed to map collaboration networks, research clusters, and emerging trends. The search strategy included specific terms related to lymphedema, breast cancer, and BCRL, ensuring a comprehensive representation of the research landscape.

Results

The bibliometric analysis revealed a steady increase in BCRL publications over the studied period, reaching a peak in 2018. The United States emerged as the leading contributor to BCRL literature, with China also demonstrating a significant presence. Collaboration networks were visualized, showcasing the interconnectedness of institutions and researchers globally. Key research hotspots identified include preventive strategies, complex decongestive therapy, and reconstructive interventions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this pioneering bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of BCRL research trends and collaborations globally. The findings contribute valuable insights into the evolution of the field, highlighting areas of focus and emerging research themes. This study serves as a foundational resource for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, fostering evidence-based practices and interventions for BCRL in the future.

Status and trends of RGS16 based on data visualization analysis: A review

G-protein signaling regulator 16 (RGS16) has been confirmed that RGS16 is associated with cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, many studies have shown that RGS16 can be used as a biomarker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. We used CiteSpace and VOS viewer software to perform a bibliometric analysis of 290 publications in the core collection of Web of Science. All the articles come from 399 institutions, including 618 authors, 179 journals, 40 countries, 115 keywords, 1 language, two types of papers, and reviews. The United States has the largest number of publications. The Research Center of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) publishes the most papers, Emory University is the most recent of all institutions with the most recent results in the RGS16 study. Cell biology is the most studied discipline, and the most studied topic is migration. Drury published RGS16-related articles with the most citations (n = 15), and Berman published articles with the most citations (n = 106). The biological applications of RGS16 are currently a hot area of RGS16 research, including inflammation, cancer, ulcerative colitis, metabolic acidosis, platelet activation, and thrombosis. The current scientometrics study provides an overview of RGS16 research from 1995 to 2022. This study provides an overview of current and potential future research hotspots in the field of RGS16 and can be used as a resource for interested researchers.

Targeting ferroptosis unveils a new era for traditional Chinese medicine: a scientific metrology study

In the past 11 years, there has been a surge in studies exploring the regulatory effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on ferroptosis. However, a significant gap persists in comprehensive scientometric analysis and scientific mapping research, especially in tracking the evolution, primary contributors, and emerging research focal points. This study aims to comprehensively update the advancements in targeting ferroptosis with various TCMs during the previous 11 years. The data, covering the period from 1 January 2012, to 30 November 2023, were retrieved from the Web of Science database. For in-depth scientometric and visualized analyses, a series of advanced analytical instruments were employed. The findings highlight China's predominant role, accounting for 71.99% of total publications and significantly shaping research in this domain. Noteworthy productivity was observed at various institutions, including Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Zhejiang University. Thomas Efferth emerged as the foremost author within this field, while Frontiers in Pharmacology boasted the highest publication count. This study pinpointed hepatocellular carcinoma, chemical and drug-induced liver injury, mitochondrial diseases, acute kidney injury, and liver failure as the most critical disorders addressed in this research realm. The research offers a comprehensive bibliometric evaluation, enhancing our understanding of the present status of TCM therapy in managing ferroptosis-related diseases. Consequently, it aids both seasoned researchers and newcomers by accelerating access to vital information and fostering innovative concept extraction within this specialized field.

Visual analysis of the research literature on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation-assisted support for respiratory failure based on CiteSpace and VOSviewer: a 20-year study

Background

This study aims to visually assess the bibliometric status, current hotspots, and development trends in the field of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)-assisted support for respiratory failure through an examination of articles pertaining to ECMO-assisted support for respiratory failure.

Methods

A search was conducted on pertinent literature in the domain of ECMO-assisted support for respiratory failure published from 2003 to 2023, utilizing the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using CiteSpace and VOSviewer visualization software to identify and assess associations between keywords, countries, institutions, authors, journals, and references.

Results

The present study incorporated a compilation of 1,901 pertinent articles. The United States published the maximum number of research articles in this field, and was closely followed by Germany and China. Furthermore, the University of Michigan was the leading institution in ECMO research. In this context, Daniel Brodie, an American expert, significantly contributed to this field and had published 107 related articles on the subject. Concurrently, active collaboration among ECMO researchers was also observed. Asaio Journal was the most prolific contributor, and Giles J. Peek, 2009, published in Lancet, comprised the most cited article in the field. Additionally, the analysis of keywords could be divided into three categories: (I) neonatal ECMO; (II) complications of ECMO; (III) ECMO application in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); (IV) application of point-of-care ultra sound in ECMO.

Conclusions

This study employed CiteSpace and VOSviewer to conduct a systematic literature review on ECMO-assisted support for respiratory failure from 2003 to 2023 in the Web of Science core database. The research outcomes in this domain were presented, offering researchers references for them to gain an accurate understanding of the current state of research and emerging trends in this field.

Global trends in poliomyelitis research over the past 20 years: A bibliometric analysis

Poliomyelitis is an acute infectious disease caused by poliovirus. This bibliometric analysis aims to examine the status of poliomyelitis research in the past 20 years. Information regarding polio research was obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Excel were used to perform visual and bibliometric analysis with respect to countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals and keywords. A total of 5,335 publications on poliomyelitis were published from 2002 to 2021. The USA was the county with the majority of publications. Additionally, the most productive institution was the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sutter, RW produced the most papers and had the most co-citations. Vaccine was the journal with the most polio-related publications and citations. The most common keywords were mainly about polio immunology research ("polio," "immunization," "children," "eradication" and "vaccine"). Our study is helpful for identifying research hotspots and providing direction for future research on poliomyelitis.

Knowledge Mapping and Research Hotspots of Generalized Pustular Psoriasis: A Bibliometric Analysis from 2003 to 2023

Background

Generalised pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. We aimed to visualize the research hotspots and trends of GPP using bibliometric analysis to enhance our comprehension of the future advancements in both basic science and clinical research.

Methods

Relevant publications from July 2003 to July 2023 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection on July 12, 2023. The analysis of countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords associated with this subject was conducted through the utilisation of CiteSpace 6.2.R4, VOSviewer 1.6.18, and Microsoft Excel 2019.

Results

A total of 578 papers were analyzed, authored by 2758 researchers from 191 countries/regions and 1868 institutions, published in 174 academic journals. There was an overall upward trajectory in the volume of annual publications, accompanied by a gradual intensification of research interest in GPP. The United States, UDICE-French Research Universities, and Akiyama M of Nagoya University were the most productive and influential country, institution, and author, respectively. The Journal of Dermatology ranked first with the highest publications, and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology received the most citations. High-frequency keywords included "generalized pustular psoriasis", "psoriasis, interleukin-36", "plaque psoriasis", "skin-disease", and "antagonist deficiency". Recent research focuses have included "safety", "secukinumab", "spesolimab", "ap1s3 mutations", and "interleukin-36". Burst detection analysis of keywords showed that "moderate", "ixekizumab treatment", "mutations", "efficacy", and "safety" are current research frontiers in this field.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis delineated the landmark publications in GPP that have defined current research hotspots and development trends, notably the applications, efficacy, and safety of biological agents. Future research endeavors are warranted to explore other biological therapeutic options for both acute GPP and the long-term management of chronic GPP.

Global research landscape on the crosstalk between ferroptosis and musculoskeletal diseases: A bibliometric and visualized analysis

Over the past 11 years, mounting evidence has suggested a significant association between ferroptosis and the development and progression of musculoskeletal (MSK) diseases, such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. However, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis summarizing the relationship between ferroptosis and MSK diseases is currently lacking. The present study collected articles and reviews on the topic of ferroptosis in MSK diseases. The data were collected from January 1st, 2012 to June 30th, 2023 by screening the Web of Science database. Various tools, including VOSviewer, CiteSpace, Pajek, the R package, and others, were used to conduct bibliometric and visualization analyses. Notably, China, the USA, and Italy emerged as primary contributors, jointly accounting for over 80 % of published documents, thereby shaping research in this domain. Among the diverse institutions, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Soochow University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology displayed the highest productivity levels. The most prolific authors include Sun Kai, Shang Peng, and Jing Xingzhi. Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity stood out with the largest number of publications in this area. The five most significant disorders in this field are bone fractures, osteosarcoma, bone neoplasms, joint diseases, and osteoporotic fractures. This study represents an inaugural comprehensive bibliometric analysis, presenting a holistic view of the knowledge framework and developmental patterns in ferroptosis concerning MSK diseases over the previous eleven years. This information can aid researchers in acquiring a thorough grasp of this domain and offer invaluable insights for forthcoming explorations.

Managing depression with complementary and alternative medicine therapies: a scientometric analysis and visualization of research activities

Background

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) interventions may prove to be an attractive option for the treatment of depression. The aim of this scientometric analysis is to determine the global scientific output of research regarding managing depression with CAM and identify the hotspots and frontiers within this theme.

Methods

Publications regarding the utilization of CAM for treating depression were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection from 1993 to 2022, and analyzed and visualized by Bibliometrix R-package, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace.

Results

A total of 1,710 publications were acquired. The number of annual publications showed an overall rapid upward trend, with the figure peaking at 179 in 2021. The USA was the leading research center. Totally 2,323 distinct institutions involving 7,638 scholars contributed to the research theme. However, most of the cooperation was limited to within the same country, institution or research team. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine was the most productive periodical. The CAM therapies of most interest to researchers were acupuncture and body-mind techniques, such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness. Systematic review and meta-analysis are commonly used methods. "Inflammation," "rating scale" and "psychological stress" were identified as the most studied trend topics recently.

Conclusion

Managing depression with evidence-based CAM treatment is gaining attention globally. Body-mind techniques and acupuncture are growing research hotspots or emerging trending topics. Future studies are predicted to potentially investigate the possible mechanisms of action underlying CAM treatments in reducing depression in terms of modulation of psychological stress and inflammation levels. Cross-countries/institutes/team research collaborations should be encouraged and further enhanced.

Bibliometric and Visualization Analysis of Biomechanical Research on Lumbar Intervertebral Disc

Background

Biomechanical research on the lumbar intervertebral disc (IVD) provides valuable information for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of related diseases, and has received increasing attention. Using bibliometric methods and visualization techniques, this study investigates for the first time the research status and development trends in this field, with the aim of providing guidance and support for subsequent research.

Methods

The Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded) within the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database was used as the data source to select literature published from 2003 to 2022 related to biomechanical research on lumbar IVD. VOSviewer 1.6.19 and CiteSpace 6.2.R2 visualization software, as well as the online analysis platform of literature metrology, were utilized to generate scientific knowledge maps for visual display and data analysis.

Results

The United States is the most productive country in this field, with the Ulm University making the largest contribution. Wilke HJ is both the most prolific author and one of the highly cited authors, while Adams MA is the most cited author. Spine, J Biomech, Eur Spine J, Spine J, and Clin Biomech are not only the journals with the highest number of publications, but also highly cited journals. The main research topics in this field include constructing and validating three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) of lumbar spine, measuring intradiscal pressure, exploring the biomechanical effects and related risk factors of lumbar disc degeneration, studying the mechanical responses to different torque load combinations, and classifying lumbar disc degeneration based on magnetic resonance images (MRI), which are also the hot research themes in recent years.

Conclusion

This study systematically reviews the knowledge system and development trends in the field of biomechanics of lumbar IVD, providing valuable references for further research.

Knowledge mapping and emerging trends of ferroptosis in ischemia reperfusion injury research: A bibliometric analysis (2013-2022)

Objective

Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is an inevitable dilemma when previously ischemic multiple organs and tissues are returned to a state of blood flow, with confirming a critical role of ferroptosis in molecular, pathway mechanisms, subcellular structure. Discovering the potential relationship may provide useful approaches for the clinical treatment and prognosis of the pathophysiological status of IRI. Therefore, a comprehensive visualization and scientometric analysis were conducted to systematically summarize and discuss the "ferroptosis in ischemia reperfusion injury" research to demonstrate directions for scholars in this field.

Methods

We retrieved all publications focusing on I/R injury and ferroptosis from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), published from 2013 to October 2022. Next, scientometric analysis of different items was performed using various bibliometrics softwares to explore the annual trends, countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors and their multi-dimensional relationship pointing to current hotspots and future advancement in this field.

Results

We included a total of 421 English articles in set timespan. The number of publications increased steadily annually. China produced the highest number of publications, followed by the United States. Most publications were from Central South University, followed by Sichuan University and Wuhan University. The most authoritative academic journal was Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity. Cell occupied the first rank of co-cited journal list. Andreas Linkermann and Scott J Dixon may have the highest influence in this intersected field with the highest number of citations and co-cited references respectively. The essential biological reactions such as oxidative stress response, lipid peroxidation metabolism, anti-inflammmatory and pro-inflammatory procedure, and related molecular pathways were knowledge base and current hotspots. Molecules pathways exploration, effective inhibition of I/R injury and promising strategy of improving allografts may become future trends and focuses.

Conclusions

Research on ferroptosis in I/R injury had aroused great interest recently. This first bibliometric study comprehensively analyzed the research landscape of ferroptosis and I/R injury, and also provided a reliable reference for related scholars to facilitate further advancement in this field.

Bibliometric Analysis of Research Trends on Manual Therapy for Low Back Pain Over Past 2 Decades

Purpose

Low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder, and manual therapy (MT) is frequently employed as a non-pharmacological treatment for LBP. This study aims to explore the research hotspots and trends in MT for LBP. MT has gained widespread acceptance in clinical practice due to its proven safety and effectiveness. The study aims to analyze the developments in the field of MT for LBP over the past 23 years, including leading countries, institutions, authoritative authors, journals, keywords, and references. It endeavors to provide a comprehensive summary of the existing research foundation and to analyze the current cutting-edge research trends.

Methods

Relevant articles between 2000 and 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database. We used the software VOSviewer and CiteSpace to perform the analysis and summarize current research hotspots and emerging trends.

Results

Through screening, we included 1643 papers from 2000 to 2023. In general, the number of articles published each year showed an upward trend. The United States had the highest number of publications and citations. Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College was the most published research institution. The University of Pittsburgh in the United States had the most collaboration with other research institutions. Long, Cynthia R. was the active author. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics was the most prolific journal with 234 publications.

Conclusion

This study provides an overview of the current status and trends of clinical studies on MT for LBP in the past 23 years using the visualization software, which may help researchers identify potential collaborators and collaborating institutions, hot topics, and new perspectives in research frontiers, while providing new clinical practice ideas for the treatment of LBP.

Tracking trends in COVID-19 vaccines based on 47 different vaccines: A bibliometric review

The COVID-19 epidemic in December 2019 had a significant negative impact on people's health and economies all across the world. The most effective preventive measure against COVID-19 is vaccination. Therefore, the development and production of COVID-19 vaccines is booming worldwide. This study aimed to analyze the current state of that research and its development tendency by bibliometrics. We conducted a thorough search of the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer1.6.18 was used to perform the bibliometric analysis of these papers. A total of 6,325 papers were finally included. The USA maintained a top position worldwide. Shimabukuro Tom T and Harvard University were the most prolific author and institution. The Vaccines was the most published journal. The research hotspots of COVID-19 vaccines can be classified into vaccine hesitancy, vaccine safety and effectiveness, vaccine immunogenicity, and adverse reactions to vaccines. Studies on various vaccination types have also concentrated on efficacy against continuously developing virus strains, immunogenicity, side effects, and safety.

Global research hotspots and frontiers of myasthenia gravis from 2002 to 2021: A bibliometric study

The objective of this study is to utilize bibliometric and visual analysis techniques to identify hotspots and frontiers of research in myasthenia gravis (MG) and provide valuable references for future research. The Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database was used to retrieve literature data related to MG research, which was then analyzed using VOSviewer 1.6.18, CiteSpace 6.1.R3, and the Online Platform for Bibliometric Analysis. The analysis revealed 6734 publications distributed across 1612 journals and contributed by as many as 24,024 authors affiliated with 4708 institutions across 107 countries/regions. The number of annual publications and citations for MG research has steadily increased over the past 2 decades, with the last 2 years alone witnessing a remarkable increase in annual publications and citations to over 600 and 17,000, respectively. In terms of productivity, the United States emerged as the top producing country, while the University of Oxford ranked first in terms of research institutions. Vincent A was identified as the top contributor in terms of publications and citations. Muscle & Nerve and Neurology ranked first in publications and citations respectively, with clinical neurology and neurosciences among the main subject categories explored. The study also identified pathogenesis, eculizumab, thymic epithelial cells, immune checkpoint inhibitors, thymectomy, MuSK antibodies, risk, diagnosis, and management as the current hot research topics in MG, while burst keywords like quality of life, immune-related adverse events (irAEs), rituximab, safety, nivolumab, cancer, and classification indicated the frontiers of MG research. This study effectively identifies the hotspots and frontiers of MG research, and offers valuable references for researchers interested in this area.

Identification of necroptosis-related genes in Parkinson's disease by integrated bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation

Background

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegeneration disease worldwide. Necroptosis, which is a new form of programmed cell death with high relationship with inflammation, plays a vital role in the progression of PD. However, the key necroptosis related genes in PD are not fully elucidated.

Purpose

Identification of key necroptosis-related genes in PD.

Method

The PD associated datasets and necroptosis related genes were downloaded from the GEO Database and GeneCards platform, respectively. The DEGs associated with necroptosis in PD were obtained by gap analysis, and followed by cluster analysis, enrichment analysis and WGCNA analysis. Moreover, the key necroptosis related genes were generated by PPI network analysis and their relationship by spearman correlation analysis. Immune infiltration analysis was used for explore the immune state of PD brain accompanied with the expression levels of these genes in various types of immune cells. Finally, the gene expression levels of these key necroptosis related genes were validated by an external dataset, blood samples from PD patients and toxin-induced PD cell model using real-time PCR analysis.

Result

Twelve key necroptosis-related genes including ASGR2, CCNA1, FGF10, FGF19, HJURP, NTF3, OIP5, RRM2, SLC22A1, SLC28A3, WNT1 and WNT10B were identified by integrated bioinformatics analysis of PD related dataset GSE7621. According to the correlation analysis of these genes, RRM2 and WNT1 were positively and negatively correlated with SLC22A1 respectively, while WNT10B was positively correlated with both OIF5 and FGF19. As the results from immune infiltration analysis, M2 macrophage was the highest population of immune cell in analyzed PD brain samples. Moreover, we found that 3 genes (CCNA1, OIP5 and WNT10B) and 9 genes (ASGR2, FGF10, FGF19, HJURP, NTF3, RRM2, SLC22A1, SLC28A3 and WNT1) were down- and up- regulated in an external dataset GSE20141, respectively. All the mRNA expression levels of these 12 genes were obviously upregulated in 6-OHDA-induced SH-SY5Y cell PD model while CCNA1 and OIP5 were up- and down- regulated, respectively, in peripheral blood lymphocytes of PD patients.

Conclusion

Necroptosis and its associated inflammation play fundamental roles in the progression of PD and these identified 12 key genes might be served as new diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for PD.

A bibliometric analysis of publications on trauma-related hemorrhagic shock from 2012 to 2022: Research landscape and future trends

Trauma-related hemorrhagic shock is a global problem. This study aimed to analyze the knowledge domain and frontiers of trauma-related hemorrhagic shock research through a bibliometric analysis. Articles on trauma-related hemorrhagic shock published between 2012 and 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, and a bibliometric analysis was conducted using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. A total of 3116 articles and reviews were analyzed. These publications primarily came from 441 institutions in 80 countries, with the USA having the highest number of publications, followed by China. Among the publications, Ernest E. Moore published the most papers, whereas John B. Holcomb had the most co-citations. The most productive institution was the University of Pittsburgh in the USA. The keyword burst and reference clustering analysis indicated that "reboa," "whole blood," "exsome," "glycocalyx," "endotheliopathy," and "predictor" are new trends and developing areas of interest. With the help of CiteSpace and VOSviewer, this study provides a deeper understanding of the research landscape, frontier hotspots, and future trends in trauma-related hemorrhagic shock over the last decade. "Whole blood" instead of "component therapy" shows potential advantage while "REBOA" is increasingly discussed in rapid hemostasis. This study provides important clues for researchers to understand the knowledge domain and frontiers of this study field.

Bibliometric and visualization analysis of global research trends on immunosenescence (1970-2021)

BACKGROUND

Immunosenescence, the aging of the immune system, leads to a decline in the body's adaptability to the environment and plays an important role in various diseases. Immunosenescence has been widely studied in recent years. However, to date, no relevant bibliometric analyses have been conducted. This study aimed to analyze the foundation and frontiers of immunosenescence research through bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

Articles and reviews on immunosenescence from 1970 to 2021 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. Countries, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords were analyzed and visualized using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. The R language and Microsoft Excel 365 were used for statistical analyses.

RESULTS

In total, 3763 publications were included in the study. The global literature on immunosenescence research has increased from 1970 to 2021. The United States was the most productive country with 1409 papers and the highest H-index. Italy had the highest average number of citations per article (58.50). Among the top 10 institutions, 50 % were in the United States. The University of California was the most productive institution, with 159 articles. Kroemer G, Franceschi C, Goronzy JJ, Solana R, and Fulop T were among the top 10 most productive and co-cited authors. Experimental Gerontology (n = 170) published the most papers on immunosenescence. The analysis of keywords found that current research focuses on "inflammaging", "gut microbiota", "cellular senescence", and "COVID-19".

CONCLUSIONS

Immunosenescence research has increased over the years, and future cooperation and interaction between countries and institutions must be expanded. The connection between inflammaging, gut microbiota, age-related diseases, and immunosenescence is a current research priority. Individualized treatment of immunosenescence, reducing its negative effects, and promoting healthy longevity will become an emerging research direction.

Knowledge mapping of biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs for axial spondyloarthritis: a bibliometric study

Various biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) have been applied for treating axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). However, there is a glaring absence of a bibliometric analysis on bDMARDs against axSpA. Articles related to use of bDMARDs in treating axSpA published from 2004 to 2022 were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection. VOS viewer 1.6.18 and CiteSpace 6.1.R2 were used to analyze and visualize the quantity and citations of publications, as well as to identify "research hotspots" and trends in this field. BibExcel version 1.0.0 and gCLUTO version 1.0 were used to build matrices for bi-clustering analysis. A total of 2546 articles referring to bDMARDs for treatment of axSpA were included in this bibliometric analysis. Overall, the number of publications has been increasing steadily annually. The USA (23.21%, 591 publications) ranked first with the largest output of papers, followed by Germany, and the Netherlands. Rheumazentrum Ruhrgebiet ranked first as the most frequent publisher (119 articles). Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases published the most documents (6.76%, 172 publications) in this field. The predominant hotspots have been "tuberculosis," "IL-17," and "quality of life" in the field until 2020. Since 2015, "biosimilar pharmaceuticals" has retained the popularity. Current research hotspots are "spinal radiographic progression," Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, and adverse events (AEs). Machine learning has become popular gradually. Globally, there has been a steady increase in the number of studies on bDMARDs use against axSpA. JAK inhibitors, spinal radiographic progression, biosimilar pharmaceuticals, and AEs are current research hotspots. Machine learning is emerging research hotspots and trends in this field.

Global knowledge mapping and emerging trends in research between spasmolytic polypeptide-expressing metaplasia and gastric carcinogenesis: A bibliometric analysis from 2002 to 2022

Background

Spasmolytic polypeptide expression metaplasia (SPEM) occurs in the corpus of the stomach and is closely related to inflammations caused by H. pylori infection. Recently, SPEM was suggested as one of the dubious precancerous lesions of gastric cancer (GC). Thus, further research on SPEM cell transdifferentiation and its underlying mechanisms could facilitate the development of new molecular targets improving the therapeutics of GC. Using bibliometrics, we analyzed publications, summarized the research hotspots and provided references for scientific researchers engaged in related research fields.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) for publications related to SPEM-GC from 2002 to 2022. The VOSviewer, SCImago, CiteSpace and R software were used to visualize and analyze the data. Gene targets identified in the keyword list were analyzed for functional enrichment using the KEGG and GO databases.

Results

Of the 292 articles identified in the initial search, we observed a stable trend in SPEM-GC research but rapid growth in the number of citations. The United States was the leader in terms of quality publications and international cooperation among them. The total number of articles published by Chinese scholars was second to the United States. Additionally, despite its low centrality and average citation frequency, China has become one of the world's most dynamic countries in academics. In terms of productivity, Vanderbilt University was identified as the most productive institution. Further, we also observed that Gastroenterology was the highest co-cited journal, and Goldenring Jr. was the most prolific author with the largest centrality.

Conclusion

SPEM could serve as an initial step in diagnosing gastric precancerous lesions. Current hotspots and frontiers of research include SPEM cell lineage differentiation, interaction with H. pylori, disturbances of the mucosal microenvironment, biomarkers, clinical diagnosis and outcomes of SPEM, as well as the development of proliferative SPEM animal models. However, further research and collaboration are still required. The findings presented in this study can be used as reference for the research status of SPEM-GC and determine new directions for future studies.

Knowledge domain and dynamic patterns in multimodal molecular imaging from 2012 to 2021: A visual bibliometric analysis

Multimodal molecular imaging technologies have been widely used to optimize medical research and clinical practice. Bibliometric analysis was performed to identify global research trends, hot spots, and scientific frontiers of multimodal molecular imaging technology from 2012 to 2021. The articles and reviews related to multimodal molecular imaging were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. A bibliometric study was performed using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. A total of 4169 articles and reviews from 2012 to 2021 were analyzed. An increasing trend in the number of articles on multimodal molecular imaging technology was observed. These publications mainly come from 417 institutions in 92 countries, led by the USA and China. K. Bailey Freund published the most papers amongst the publications, while R.F. Spaide had the most co-citations. A dual map overlay of the literature shows that most publications were specialized in physics/materials/chemistry, and molecular/biology/immunology. Synergistic therapy in cancer, advanced nanotechnology, and multimodal imaging in ophthalmology are new trends and developing areas of interest. A global bibliometric and visualization analysis was used to comprehensively review the published research related to multimodal molecular imaging. This study may help in understanding the dynamic patterns of multimodal molecular imaging technology research and point out the developing areas of this field.

Global trends and hotspots of phage therapy for bacterial infection: A bibliometric visualized analysis from 2001 to 2021

Background

Antibiotic resistance is one of the main global threats to human health, and just the development of new antimicrobial medications is not enough to solve the crisis. Phage therapy (PT), a safe and effective treatment method, has reignited the interest of researchers due to its efficacy in the clinical treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections. There is, however, no bibliometric analysis of the overall trends on this topic. Therefore, this study aims to provide an overview of the current state of development and research in this area.

Methods

We extracted all relevant publications from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database between 2001 and 2021. We performed bibliometric analysis and visualization using CiteSpace, VOS viewer, and R software. Annual trends of publications, countries/regions distributions, institutions, funding agencies, co-cited journals, author contributions, core journals, references, and keywords were analyzed.

Results

A total of 6,538 papers were enrolled in this study, including 5,364 articles and 1,174 reviews. Publications have increased drastically from 61 in 2001 to 937 in 2021, with 3,659 articles published in the last 5 years. North America, Western Europe, and East Asia were significant contributor regions. The United States, China, and the United Kingdom were the most productive countries. The Polish Academy of Sciences was the most contributive institution. Frontiers in Microbiology and Applied and Environmental Microbiology were the most productive and co-cited journals. A. Gorski and R. Lavigne published most articles in this field, while V. A. Fischetti was the author with the most cited. Regarding keywords, research focuses include phage biology, phage against clinically important pathogens, phage lysis proteins, phage therapy, biofilm-related research, and recent clinical applications.

Conclusion

Phage therapy is a potential strategy for combating antibiotic resistance, and it will provide us with an alternative therapeutic option for bacterial infection. According to global trends, the scientific output of PT in bacterial infections is increasing, with developed countries such as the United States leading the way in this area. Although the safety and efficacy of PT have been proven, more clinical trials on the phages against infectious diseases caused by various pathogens are still needed.

Emerging trends and hotspots evolution in cardiotoxicity: A bibliometric and knowledge-Map analysis From 2010 to 2022

Background

There is growing emphasis on the cardiotoxicity research over the past 12 years. To look for the hotspots evolution and to explore the emerging trends in the field of cardiotoxicity, publications related to cardiotoxicity were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection on August 2, 2022.

Methods

We used the CiteSpace 5.8 R3 and VOSviewer 1.6.18 to perform bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis.

Results

A total of 8,074 studies by 39,071 authors from 6,530 institutions in 124 countries or regions were published in different academic journals. The most productive country was absolutely the United States, and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was the institution with the largest output. Zhang, Yun published the most articles, and the author who had the most frequent co-citations was Moslehi, Javid. New England Journal of Medicine was the most frequently cited journals in this field. Mechanisms of cardiotoxicity have received the most attention and was the main research directions in the field. The disease of cardiotoxicity together with the related risk factors are potential research hotspots. Immune checkpoint inhibitor and myocarditis are two recently discussed and rapidly expanding research topic in the areas of cardiotoxicity.

Conclusions

This bibliometric analysis provided a thorough analysis of the cardiotoxicity, which would provide crucial sources of information and concepts for academics studying this area. As a rapidly expanding field in cardiology, the related field of cardiotoxicity will continue to be a focus of research.

Non-suicidal self-injury: A bibliometrics study and visualization analysis from 2002 to 2022

OBJECTIVE

To overview the research actuality and offer the hotspots and cutting-edge issues in the field of Non-suicidal Self-injury (NSSI) by using bibliometric analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Publications related to NSSI from 2002 to 2022 were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace V 6.1.R2 and VOSviewer 1.6.18 were used to visually analyzed institutions, countries, journals, authors, references, and keywords in research on NSSI.

RESULTS

A total of 799 studies about NSSI were analyzed via CiteSpace and VOSviewer. The number of annual publications related to NSSI is fluctuating growth. The USA and Harvard University are the most productive country and institutions. In the case of journals and co-cited journals, Psychiatry Research are the most productive journal and also ranked highest among co-cited journals. Furthermore, Michael Kaess has published the most publications, and Matthew K. Nock is the most cited author. An article published by Swannell SV et al. shows the highest citation counts. After analysis, the most common keywords are harm, adolescents and prevalence. The gender difference, diagnosis, and dysregulation are frontier areas of NSSI research.

CONCLUSION

This study analyzed the research of NSSI from multiple perspectives, and provides valuable information for researchers to capture the current status, hot spots, and frontier trends of NSSI.

Knowledge Mapping of Opioids and Immunomodulation: A Bibliometric Analysis (2000-2022)

Background

Increasing evidence indicates that opioids markedly affect the immune system. However, there are few studies on opioids and immunomodulation using bibliometric analysis.

Purpose

We aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the research status and trends of the influence of opioids on immunomodulation using a bibliometric approach.

Methods

Articles related to opioids and immunomodulation published from 2000 to 2022 were obtained from the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection by searching keywords related to opioids and immunomodulation. Bibliometric analyses and visualizations were conducted using the CiteSpace and VOSviewer software programs.

Results

From 2000 to 2022, a total of 3242 research articles on opioids and immunomodulation were published in 1126 academic journals by 16,555 authors in 3368 institutions from 102 countries/regions. A majority of publications were from the US and China, and the University of Minnesota System and Chinese Academy of Sciences were the most active institutions. Tsong-long Hwang had published the most papers, while Sabita Roy had the most cocitations. The Journal of Ethnopharmacology published the most papers on opioids and immunomodulation, the Journal of Immunology was the top cocited journal, and the major area of these publications were molecular, biological, and genetic. The top three keywords were "expression", "activation", and "inflammation."

Conclusion

The number of studies on opioids and immunomodulation has increased sharply all over the world in the last two decades. This is the first bibliometric study to comprehensively summarize the collaboration network in this field. It will help scholars to understand not only the basic knowledge structure but also potential collaborations, research trend topics, and hot directions.

Knowledge mapping of alternative splicing of cancer from 2012 to 2021: A bibliometric analysis

Background

As a processing method of RNA precursors, alternative splicing (AS) is critical to normal cellular activities. Aberrant AS events are associated with cancer development and can be promising targets to treat cancer. However, no detailed and unbiased study describes the current state of AS of cancer research. We aim to measure and recognize the current state and trends of AS cancer research in this study.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection was used to acquire the articles. Utilizing three bibliometric tools (CiteSpace, VOSviewer, R-bibliometrix), we were able to measure and recognize the influence and collaboration data of individual articles, journals, and co-citations. Analysis of co-occurrence and burst information helped us identify the trending research areas related to AS of cancer.

Results

From 2012 to 2021, the total number of papers on AS of cancer published in 766 academic journals was 3,507, authored by 20,406 researchers in 405 institutions from 80 countries/regions. Research involving AS of cancer genes was primarily conducted in the United States and China; simultaneously, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, and National Cancer Institute were the institutions with strong research capabilities. Scorilas Andreas is the scholar with the most publications, while the most co-citations were generated by Wang, Eric T. Plos One published the most papers on AS of cancer, while J Biol Chem was the most co-cited academic journal in this field. The results of keyword co-occurrence analysis can be divided into three types: molecular (P53, CD44, androgen receptor, srsf3, esrp1), pathological process (apoptosis, EMT, metastasis, angiogenesis, proliferation), and disease (breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric cancer).

Conclusion

Research on AS of cancer has been increasing in intensity over the past decade. Current AS of cancer studies focused on the hallmarks of AS in cancer and AS signatures including diagnostic and therapeutic targets. Among them, the current trends are splicing factors regulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition and other hallmarks, aberrant splicing events in tumors, and further mechanisms. These might give researchers interested in this field a forward-looking perspective and inform further research.

Trends in Helicobacter pylori-related gastric ulcer research from 2012 to 2022: A bibliometric and visual analysis

Background

Helicobacter pylori-related gastric ulcer (H. pylori-related GU) is one of the most common digestive system diseases that have received widespread attention from researchers. The purpose of this article was to analyze the research status and hotspots of H. pylori-related GU and to predict its future research directions.

Methods

The article and review papers associated with H. pylori-related GU published from 2012 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The analysis of knowledge maps and bibliometrics was done with CiteSpace 6.1.R2 Basic and VOSviewer 1.6.18.

Results

A total of 2,971 articles were included in the study. Between 2012 and 2022, the number of papers published showed an increasing trend. China was the most prolific country, and the United States was the most influential country. Baylor College of Medicine had the largest number of publications and citations among publishing agencies. World Journal of Gastroenterology published the most articles on the H. pylori-related GU field, and GUT was the journal with the most cited articles. Yamaoka Y from Japan was the most productive author, and Graham DY from the USA was the most influential author. A keyword and reference analysis showed that the hot topics of research were the mechanism of H. pylori and the treatment of H. pylori-related GU. The keywords that emerged in the recent 5 years were oxidative stress, probiotics, competitive acid blocker, vonoprazan, gut microbiota, and neutrophil-activating protein.

Conclusion

Over the recent 10 years, research on H. pylori-related GU has generally shown an increasing trend. The treatment and pathogenesis of H. pylori-related GU remain a hot topic of research. The treatment of H. pylori by oxidative stress and competitive acid inhibitor mechanisms, the influence of gastrointestinal flora on H. pylori, probiotic adjuvant therapy of H. pylori-related GU, and the immunoprotective effect of neutrophil activator protein could be popular research directions and trends in the future.

Knowledge mapping of the links between the microbiota and allergic diseases: A bibliometric analysis (2002-2021)

BACKGROUND

In recent decades, dramatic changes in modern environmental exposures and lifestyles have resulted in a steep rise in the prevalence of allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and food allergies. Evidence is mounting that the microbiota plays a crucial role in allergic disorder development and evolution. Therefore, a better understanding of allergic diseases within the context of the microbiota is urgently needed. This work aimed to comprehensively outline general characteristics, research hotspots, evolution routes, and emerging trends in this area.

METHODS

Relevant publications from January 2002 to December 2021 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection on 5 August 2022. Bibliometric and visual analyses were performed using CiteSpace; VOSviewer; an online bibliometric platform; and Microsoft Excel 2019.

RESULTS

In total, 2535 documents met the requirements. The annual number of publications has shown rapid growth in the last two decades. The USA, University of California System, and Isolauri E of the University of Turku were the most productive and influential country, institution, and author, respectively. The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology was the most prolific and most cocited journal. High-frequency keywords included "gut microbiota", "asthma", "atopic dermatitis", "children", and "probiotics". Recent studies have focused on "atopic dermatitis", "skin", "asthma", and "probiotics", according to the cocitation analysis of references. Burst detection analysis of keywords showed that "community", "skin microbiome", "microbiome", "Staphylococcus aureus", and "chain fatty acid" were emerging research frontiers, which currently have ongoing bursts.

CONCLUSION

In the last 20 years, studies of the microbiota in allergic diseases have been flourishing, and the themes have been increasing in depth. These findings provide valuable references on the current research hotspots and gaps and development trends in the link between the microbiota and allergic diseases.

Knowledge domain and emerging trends in beta-cell research: A bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis

BACKGROUND

Up to now, the physiology, pathology, and recovery of beta-cells have been intensively studied and made great progress, and these are of major significance for the treatment of related diseases. Nevertheless, a comprehensive and objective report on the status of beta-cell research is lacking. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis to quantify and identify the current status and trending issues in beta-cell research.

METHODS

The articles and reviews related to beta-cell were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection on August 31, 2022. Two scientometric software (CiteSpace 6.1.R3 and VOSviewer 1.6.18) were used to perform bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 4098 papers were published in 810 academic journals in 2938 institutions from 83 countries/regions. The number of beta-cell-related publications was increasing steadily. The United States was the most productive country, while Universite libre de Bruxelles, University of Toronto and University of Geneva were the most active institutions. Diabetes published the most beta-cell studies and received the largest number of co-citations. Decio I Eizirik published the most papers and had the most co-citations. Twelve references on reviews and mechanisms were regarded as the knowledge base. Four major aspects of beta-cell research included the pathological mechanism of beta-cell failure, the recovery of beta cells, the risk factor related to beta cells, and the physiology of beta cells. Endoplasmic reticulum stress and oxidative stress have been core elements throughout the research in this field. In addition, beta-cell dedifferentiation, inflammation, autophagy, miRNA, and lncRNA are hot topics nowadays. Additionally, stem cell replacement therapies might be the alternative way to reverse beta-cell failure. Restoring beta-cell mass and function will remain a research goal in the future.

CONCLUSION

This study provided a comprehensive overview of beta-cell research through bibliometric and visual methods. The information would provide helpful references for scholars focusing on beta cells.
