Chitosan Nanocomposite Coatings for Food, Paints, and Water Treatment Applications

Designing of chitosan/gelatin based nanocomposite films integrated with Vachellia nilotica gum carbon dots for smart food packaging applications

Microbial growth and exposure to UV light is a persistent global concern resulting in food spoilage, therefore, smart packaging is crucial for the availability of safer and quality food. Present work describes fabrication of chitosan (CH) and gelatin (GL) based nanocomposite films by introducing green source, highly fluorescent Vachillia nilotica gum-derived carbon dots (VNG-CDs). The VNG-CDs and incorporated CH/GL nanocomposite films were characterized by UV-Visible, FTIR, XRD, SEM and TGA analysis. The FTIR and XRD data revealed that VNG-CDs, chitosan, gelatin, and glycerol are combined/interlinked to form homogeneous nanocomposite films. The inclusion of VNG-CDs to CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite film efficiently enhanced the thermal stability and improved mechanical properties. VNG-CDs added to films markedly blocked the ultraviolet light and their effectiveness improved as concentration of CDs increases, being >90 % in UVC (200-280 nm) region. The prepared CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite films manifested radical scavenging activity, reducing capability and also excellently inhibited growth of E. coli, K. pneumonia and S. aureus bacteria. The viability of CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite films examined using banana as a model fruit extending the storage time by two weeks. In conclusion, CH/GL films containing VNG-CDs can be developed into smart packaging materials with enhanced protection and antimicrobial properties.

Preparation and characterization of biodegradable food packaging films using lemon peel pectin and chitosan incorporated with neem leaf extract and its application on apricot fruit

The present study aims to develop and characterize biodegradable packaging films from lemon peel-derived pectin and chitosan incorporated with a bioactive extract from neem leaves. The films (PCNE) contained varying concentrations of neem leaf extract and were comprehensively assessed for their physical, optical, mechanical, and antimicrobial attributes. The thickness, moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor permeability of the biodegradable packaging films increased with the increasing concentration of neem leaf extract. Comparatively, the tensile strength of the films decreased by 42.05 % compared to the control film. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the resultant blended pectin-chitosan films showed a uniform structure without cracks. Furthermore, the analysis targeting Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger indicated that the films had potent antimicrobial activity. Based on these results, the optimum films were selected and subsequently applied on apricot fruits to increase their shelf life at ambient temperature. The findings, after examining factors such as colour, firmness, total soluble solids, shrinkage, weight loss, and appearance, concluded that the apricots coated by PCNE-5 had the most delayed signs of spoilage and increased their shelf life by 50 %. The results showed the potential applicability of lemon peel pectin-chitosan-neem leaf extract blend films in biodegradable food packaging.

Application of chitosan films incorporated with Zanthoxylum limonella essential oil for extending shelf life of pork

This study aimed to produce chitosan films incorporated with Zanthoxylum limonella essential oil for extending shelf life. The volatile compounds of Z. limonella essential oil were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry consisting of limonene, α-phellandrene, ρ-cymene, and sabinene as major compounds. In this study, the addition of Z. limonella essential oil at concentrations of 0 %, 2 %, and 4 % in chitosan film was assessed for its antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Chitosan film incorporated with 4 % essential oil demonstrated the most significant antibacterial effect against E. coli and S. aureus in comparison to the chitosan film without essential oil due to the synergistic effects on antibacterial activity. The physical and mechanical properties of the chitosan films incorporated with Z. limonella oil developed were also assessed. The addition of essential oil to chitosan films led to improvements in mechanical strength and flexibility, while minimal changes were observed in terms of water solubility, water vapor permeability, and thermal stability. The findings emphasize that this innovative film not only extends the shelf life of pork without chemical preservatives but is also a fully bio-based material. Consequently, it shows great potential to be used as active packaging within the food industry.

Investigating the effects of chitosan/ tragacanth gum/ polyvinyl alcohol composite coating incorporated with cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsion on safety and quality features of chicken breast fillets during storage in the refrigerator

The present study investigated the effects of composite coatings made of chitosan (CS), tragacanth gum (TG), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing cinnamon essential oil (CEO) on the shelf-life of refrigerated chicken breast fillets. The samples were treated with different coating dispersions, and coded as: T1 (distilled water as control), T2 (blank composite coating), and T3 (composite coating containing CEO). Results showed that incorporating CEO into CS/TG/PVA coatings could significantly increase the quality of chicken fillets. The obtained results showed that after 21 days, the total microbial population of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), psychrotrophic and mesophilic bacteria in T3 samples was less than T1 and T2 samples. In addition, the highest antioxidant activity (48.04 %) and total phenolic content (TPC) values (2.458 mg gallic acid /g), the best sensory characteristics and the lowest pH (5.73), total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) (21.89 mg N/100 g), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) (1.678 mg malondialdehyde equivalent/kg) and percentage of cooking loss (30 %) were related to T3. Results disclosed that this composite coating is a promising technology to improve the shelf life of chicken fillets during storage.

Adsorption and photodegradation of organic contaminants by silver nanoparticles: isotherms, kinetics, and computational analysis

In view of the widespread and distribution of several classes and types of organic contaminants, increased efforts are needed to reduce their spread and subsequent environmental contamination. Although several remediation approaches are available, adsorption and photodegradation technologies are presented in this review as one of the best options because of their environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, accessibility, less selectivity, and wider scope of applications among others. The bandgap, particle size, surface area, electrical properties, thermal stability, reusability, chemical stability, and other properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPS) are highlighted to account for their suitability in adsorption and photocatalytic applications, concerning organic contaminants. Literatures have been reviewed on the application of various AgNPS as adsorbent and photocatalyst in the remediation of several classes of organic contaminants. Theories of adsorption have also been outlined while photocatalysis is seen to have adsorption as the initial mechanism. Challenges facing the application of silver nanoparticles have also been highlighted and possible solutions have been presented. However, current information is dominated by applications on dyes and the view of the authors supports the need to strengthen the usefulness of AgNPS in adsorption and photodegradation of more classes of organic contaminants, especially emerging contaminants. We also encourage the simultaneous applications of adsorption and photodegradation to completely convert toxic wastes to harmless forms.

Recent advances in the production of bionanomaterials for development of sustainable food packaging: A comprehensive review

Polymers originating from natural macromolecule based polymeric materials have gained popularity due to the demand for green resources to develop unique, eco-friendly, and high-quality biopolymers. The objective of this review is to address the utilization of bionanomaterials to improve food quality, safety, security, and shelf life. Bionanomaterials are synthesized by integrating biological molecules with synthetic materials at the nanoscale. Nanostructured materials derived from biopolymers such as cellulose, chitin, or collagen can be employed for the development of sustainable food packaging. Green materials are cost-effective, biocompatible, biodegradable, and renewable. The interaction of nanoparticles with biological macromolecules must be analyzed to determine the properties of the packaging film. The nanoparticles control the growth of bacteria that cause food spoiling by releasing distinctive chemicals. Bio-nanocomposites and nanoencapsulation systems have been used in antimicrobial bio-based packaging solutions to improve the efficiency of synergism. Nanomaterials can regulate gas and moisture permeability, screen UV radiation, and limit microbial contamination, keeping the freshness and flavor of the food. Food packaging based on nanoparticles embedded biopolymers can alleviate environmental concerns by lowering the amount of packaging materials required and enhancing packaging recyclability. This results in less waste and a more eco-sustainable approach to food packaging. The study on current advances in the production of bionanomaterials for development of sustainable food packaging involves a detailed investigation of the available data from existing literature, as well as the compilation and analysis of relevant research results using statistical approaches.

A new formulation of Ni/Zn bi-metallic nanocomposite and evaluation of its applications for pollution removal, photocatalytic, electrochemical sensing, and anti-breast cancer

Nanocomposites have gained attention due to their variety of applications in different fields. In this research, we have reported a green synthesis of a bi-metallic nanocomposite of nickel and zinc using an aqueous extract of Citrus sinensis in the presence of chitosan (Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan). The nanocomposite was characterized using different techniques. We have examined various applications for Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan. The NPs were manufactured in spherical morphology with a particle range size of 17.34-90.51 nm. Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan showed an acceptable ability to remove dyes of Congo red and methyl orange from an aqueous solution after 80 min furthermore, it uptaking the drug mefenamic acid from a solution. Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan also exhibited great photocatalytic activity in synthesizing benzimidazole using benzyl alcohol and o-phenylenediamine. Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan was found as a potent electrochemical sensor to determine glucose. In the molecular and cellular section of the current research, the cells with composite nanoparticles were studied by MTT way about the anti-breast adenocarcinoma potentials malignant cell lines. The IC50 of composite nanoparticles were 320, 460, 328, 500, 325, 379, 350, and 396 μg/mL concering RBA, NMU, SK-BR-3, CAMA-1, MCF7, AU565, MDA-MB-468, and Hs 281.T breast adenocarcinoma cell lines, respectively. The results revealed the newly synthesized nanocomposite is a potent photocatalyst, dye pollution removal agent, and an acceptable new drug to treat breast cancer.

Electrospun Nanofibrous Mesh Based on PVA, Chitosan, and Usnic Acid for Applications in Wound Healing

Injuries and diseases of the skin require accurate treatment using nontoxic and noninvasive biomaterials, which aim to mimic the natural structures of the body. There is a strong need to develop biodevices capable of accommodating nutrients and bioactive molecules and generating the process of vascularization. Electrospinning is a robust technique, as it can form fibrous structures for tissue engineering and wound dressings. The best way of forming such meshes for wound healing is to choose two polymers that complement each other regarding their properties. On the one hand, PVA is a water-soluble synthetic polymer widely used for the preparation of hydrogels in the field of biomedicine owing to its biocompatibility, water solubility, nontoxicity, and considerable mechanical properties. PVA is easy to subject to electrospinning and can offer strong mechanical stability of the mesh, but it is necessary to improve its biological properties. On the other hand, CS has good biological properties, including biodegradability, nontoxicity, biocompatibility, and antimicrobial properties. Still, it is harder to electrospin and does not possess as good mechanical properties as PVA. As these structures also allow the incorporation of bioactive agents due to their high surface-area-to-volume ratio, the interesting point was to incorporate usnic acid into the structure as it is a natural and suitable alternative agent for burn wounds treatment which avoids an improper or overuse of antibiotics and other invasive biomolecules. Thus, we report the fabrication of an electrospun nanofibrous mesh based on PVA, chitosan, and usnic acid with applications in wound healing. The obtained nanofibers mesh was physicochemically characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In vitro biological assays were performed to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of the samples using the MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) assay and evaluating the influence of fabricated meshes on the Staphylococcus aureus biofilm development, as well as their biocompatibility (demonstrated by fluorescence microscopy results, an XTT assay, and a glutathione (GSH) assay).

Nanoparticle Synthesis and Their Integration into Polymer-Based Fibers for Biomedical Applications

The potential of nanoparticles as effective drug delivery systems combined with the versatility of fibers has led to the development of new and improved strategies to help in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Nanoparticles have extraordinary characteristics that are helpful in several applications, including wound dressings, microbial balance approaches, tissue regeneration, and cancer treatment. Owing to their large surface area, tailor-ability, and persistent diameter, fibers are also used for wound dressings, tissue engineering, controlled drug delivery, and protective clothing. The combination of nanoparticles with fibers has the power to generate delivery systems that have enhanced performance over the individual architectures. This review aims at illustrating the main possibilities and trends of fibers functionalized with nanoparticles, focusing on inorganic and organic nanoparticles and polymer-based fibers. Emphasis on the recent progress in the fabrication procedures of several types of nanoparticles and in the description of the most used polymers to produce fibers has been undertaken, along with the bioactivity of such alliances in several biomedical applications. To finish, future perspectives of nanoparticles incorporated within polymer-based fibers for clinical use are presented and discussed, thus showcasing relevant paths to follow for enhanced success in the field.

Prevention of marine biofouling in the aquaculture industry by a coating based on polydimethylsiloxane-chitosan and sodium polyacrylate

In this study, a series of novel hydrophobic/hydrophilic hybrid (HHH) coatings with the feature of preventing the fouling phenomenon was fabricated based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), as matrix and two hydrophilic polymers: chitosan and sodium polyacrylate, as dispersed phases. Antibacterial activity, pseudo-barnacle adhesion strength, surface free energy, water contact angle, and water absorption were performed for all samples. Evaluating field immersion of the samples was performed in the natural seawater. The results showed that the dispersed phase containing PDMS coatings showed simultaneously both of antibacterial activity and foul release behavior. Among the samples, the PCs4 coating containing 4 wt% Cs indicated the lowest pseudo barnacle adhesion strength (0.04 MPa), the lowest surface free energy (18.94 mN/m), the highest water contact angle (116.05°), and the percentage of fouling organisms 9.8 % after 30 days immersion. The HHH coatings can be considered as novel eco-friendly antifouling/foul release coatings for aquaculture applications.

Natural-based coagulants/flocculants as sustainable market-valued products for industrial wastewater treatment: a review of recent developments

Industrial wastewater is categorized as a voracious consumer of fresh water and a high-strength source of pollution. Coagulation-flocculation is a simple and cost-effective technique for removing organic/inorganic compounds and colloidal particles from industrial effluents. Despite the outstanding natural properties, biodegradability, and efficacy of natural coagulants/flocculants (NC/Fs) in industrial wastewater treatment, their significant potential to remediate such effluents is underappreciated, particularly in commercial scale applications. Most reviews on NC/Fs focused on the possible application of plant-based sources such as plant seeds, tannin, certain vegetables/fruit peels, and their lab-scale potential. Our review expands the scope by examining the feasibility of using natural materials from other sources for industrial effluent decontamination. By analyzing the latest data on NC/Fs, we identify the most promising preparation techniques for making these materials stable enough to compete with traditional options in the marketplace. An interesting presentation of the results of various recent studies has also been highlighted and discussed. Additionally, we highlight the recent success of using magnetic-natural coagulants/flocculants (M-NC/Fs) in treating diverse industrial effluents, and discuss the potential for reprocessing spent materials as a renewable resource. The review also offers different concepts for suggested large-scale treatment systems used by MN-CFs.

Improvement of Chitosan Films Properties by Blending with Cellulose, Honey and Curcumin

Chitosan is a natural biopolymer that can be used in biomedical applications, tissue engineering, and wound dressing because of its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity. The blending of chitosan films with natural biomaterials such as cellulose, honey, and curcumin was studied at different concentrations in order to improve their physical properties. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, mechanical tensile properties, X-ray diffraction (XRD), antibacterial effects, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were studied for all blended films. The XRD, FTIR, and mechanical results showed that films blended with curcumin were more rigid and compatible and had higher antibacterial effects than other blended films. In addition, XRD and SEM showed that blending chitosan films with curcumin decreases the crystallinity of the chitosan matrix compared to cellulose and honey blending films due to increased intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which reduces the close packing of the CS matrix.

Design of hydrotalcite and biopolymers entrapped tunable cerium organic cubic hybrid material for superior fluoride adsorption

The excess fluoride in drinking water is serious risk which leads to fluorosis. The adsorption method is facile route for defluoridation studies. Hybrid adsorbent possesses unique advantages like high surface area and high stability has been employed for water treatment. In the present work, hydrotalcite (HT) fabricated Ce-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) bridged with biopolymers (alginate and chitosan) namely HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads was developed and employed towards fluoride removal in batch mode. The fabricated HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS beads were analyzed by DTA, FTIR, SEM, EDAX, TGA and XRD studies. Besides, FTIR and EDAX proved the affinity of HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads on fluoride was majorly attributed by electrostatic interaction, ion-exchange and complexation mechanism. To include detail insight into adsorption route; the kinetics, thermodynamic and isotherm studies were investigated for fluoride adsorption. The equilibrium data of HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads for fluoride adsorption was fitted with Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic investigation results demonstrated that the fluoride adsorption was spontaneous with endothermic nature. The regeneration and field investigation results revealed that the developed HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads are reusable and more apt at field environment.

Remediation plan of nano/microplastic toxicity in food

Microplastic pollution is causing a stir globally due to its persistent and ubiquitous nature. The scientific collaboration is diligently working on improved, effective, sustainable, and cleaner measures to control the nano/microplastic load in the environment especially wrecking the aquatic habitat. This chapter discusses the challenges encountered in nano/microplastic control and improved technologies like density separation, continuous flow centrifugation, oil extraction protocol, electrostatic separation to extract and quantify the same. Although it is still in the early stages of research, biobased control measures, like meal worms and microbes to degrade microplastics in the environment have been proven effective. Besides the control measures, practical alternatives to microplastics can be developed like core-shell powder, mineral powder, and biobased food packaging systems like edible films and coatings developed using various nanotechnological tools. Lastly, the existing and ideal stage of global regulations is compared, and key research areas are pinpointed. This holistic coverage would enable manufacturers and consumers to reconsider their production and purchase decisions for sustainable development goals.

Chitosan modified with bio-extract as an antibacterial coating with UV filtering feature

Benzophenone-3 grafted chitosan (CS-BP-3) was successfully synthesized and applied as an antibacterial coating for the first time. The grafting mechanism is based on the reaction between ketone and primary amine to form imine derivatives and the chemical structure of grafted chitosan was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Water solubility of BP-3 is enhanced after covalently grafted on chitosan and consequently renders the chitosan coating with UV blocking property. Results of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) further confirmed the thermal stability of BP-3 modified chitosan is enhanced. The CS-BP-3 coating was applied on a variety of substrates of glass, plastics, wood, and metal. The surface features of the coatings such as morphology, water contact angle (WCA), and surface roughness were investigated. The optical and thermal stabilities of the coatings under UV irradiation were studied for 16 h. Antibacterial activity of CS-BP-3 was evaluated against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. And the results of bacterial inhibition by CS-BP-3 coating indicate its potential for future application in food packaging.

Investigation of Cross-Linked Chitosan-Based Membranes as Potential Adsorbents for the Removal of Cu2+ Ions from Aqueous Solutions

Rapid industrialization has led to huge amounts of organic pollutants and toxic heavy metals into aquatic environment. Among the different strategies explored, adsorption remains until the most convenient process for water remediation. In the present work, novel cross-linked chitosan-based membranes were elaborated as potential adsorbents of Cu²⁺ ions, using as cross-linking agent a random water-soluble copolymer P(DMAM-co-GMA) of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM). Cross-linked polymeric membranes were prepared through casting aqueous solutions of mixtures of P(DMAM-co-GMA) and chitosan hydrochloride, followed by thermal treatment at 120 °C. After deprotonation, the membranes were further explored as potential adsorbents of Cu²⁺ ions from aqueous CuSO₄ solution. The successful complexation of copper ions with unprotonated chitosan was verified visually through the color change of the membranes and quantified through UV-vis spectroscopy. Cross-linked membranes based on unprotonated chitosan adsorb Cu²⁺ ions efficiently and decrease the concentration of Cu²⁺ ions in water to a few ppm. In addition, they can act as simple visual sensors for the detection of Cu²⁺ ions at low concentrations (~0.2 mM). The adsorption kinetics were well-described by a pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion model, while the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model, revealing maximum adsorption capacities in the range of 66-130 mg/g. Finally, it was shown that the membranes can be effectively regenerated using aqueous H₂SO₄ solution and reused.

MOFs-Modified Electrochemical Sensors and the Application in the Detection of Opioids

Opioids are widely used in clinical practice, but drug overdoses can lead to many adverse reactions, and even endanger life. Therefore, it is essential to implement real-time measurement of drug concentrations to adjust the dosage given during treatment, keeping drug levels within therapeutic levels. Metal-Organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composite materials modified bare electrode electrochemical sensors have the advantages of fast production, low cost, high sensitivity, and low detection limit in the detection of opioids. In this review, MOFs and MOFs composites, electrochemical sensors modified with MOFs for the detection of opioids, as well as the application of microfluidic chips in combination with electrochemical methods are all reviewed, and the potential for the development of microfluidic chips electrochemical methods with MOFs surface modifications for the detection of opioids is also prospected. We hope that this review will provide contributions to the study of electrochemical sensors modified with MOFs for the detection of opioids.

SMART Silly Putty: Stretchable, Malleable, Adherable, Reusable, and Tear-Resistible Hydrogels

Cell engineering, soft robotics, and wearable electronics often desire soft materials that are easy to deform, self-heal readily, and can relax stress rapidly. Hydrogels, a type of hydrophilic networks, are such kind of materials that can be made responsive to environmental stimuli. However, conventional hydrogels often suffer from poor stretchability and repairability. Here, hydrogels consisting of boronic ester dynamic covalent bonds in a double network of poly(vinyl alcohol)/boric acid and chitosan are synthesized, which demonstrate extreme stretchability (up to 310 times the original length), instant self-healing (within 5 s), and reusability and inherent adhesion. Their instant stress relaxation stems from a low activation energy of the boronic ester bond exchange (≤20 kJ mol^-1 ) and contributes to the extreme stretchability and self-healing behaviors. Various water-dispersible additives can be readily incorporated in the hydrogels via hand kneading for potential applications such as soft electronics, bio-signal sensing, and soft artificial joints.

Chitosan-Based Polymer Nanocomposites for Environmental Remediation of Mercury Pollution

Mercury is a well-known heavy metal pollutant of global importance, typically found in effluents (lakes, oceans, and sewage) and released into the atmosphere. It is highly toxic to humans, animals and plants. Therefore, the current challenge is to develop efficient materials and techniques that can be used to remediate mercury pollution in water and the atmosphere, even in low concentrations. The paper aims to review the chitosan-based polymer nanocomposite materials that have been used for the environmental remediation of mercury pollution since they possess multifunctional properties, beneficial for the adsorption of various kinds of pollutants from wastewater and the atmosphere. In addition, these chitosan-based polymer nanocomposites are made of non-toxic materials that are environmentally friendly, highly porous, biocompatible, biodegradable, and recyclable; they have a high number of surface active sites, are earth-abundant, have minimal surface defects, and are metal-free. Advances in the modification of the chitosan, mainly with nanomaterials such as multi-walled carbon nanotube and nanoparticles (Ag, TiO₂, S, and ZnO), and its use for mercury uptake by batch adsorption and passive sampler methods are discussed.

Application of Iron Nanoparticle-Based Materials in the Food Industry

Due to their different properties compared to other materials, nanoparticles of iron and iron oxides are increasingly used in the food industry. Food technologists have especially paid attention to their ease of separation by magnetic fields and biocompatibility. Unfortunately, the consumption of increasing amounts of nanoparticles has raised concerns about their biotoxicity. Hence, knowledge about the applicability of iron nanoparticle-based materials in the food industry is needed not only among scientists, but also among all individuals who are involved in food production. The first part of this article describes typical methods of obtaining iron nanoparticles using chemical synthesis and so-called green chemistry. The second part of this article describes the use of iron nanoparticles and iron nanoparticle-based materials for active packaging, including the ability to eliminate oxygen and antimicrobial activity. Then, the possibilities of using the magnetic properties of iron nano-oxides for enzyme immobilization, food analysis, protein purification and mycotoxin and histamine removal from food are described. Other described applications of materials based on iron nanoparticles are the production of artificial enzymes, process control, food fortification and preserving food in a supercooled state. Chitosan Edible Films and Coatings with Added Bioactive Compounds: Antibacterial and Antioxidant Properties and Their Application to Food Products: A Review

Chitosan is the deacetylated form of chitin regarded as one of the most abundant polymers and due to its properties, both chitosan alone or in combination with bioactive substances for the production of biodegradable films and coatings is gaining attention in terms of applications in the food industry. To enhance the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of chitosan, a vast variety of plant extracts have been incorporated to meet consumer demands for more environmentally friendly and synthetic preservative-free foods. This review provides knowledge about the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of chitosan films and coatings enriched with natural extracts as well as their applications in various food products and the effects they had on them. In a nutshell, it has been demonstrated that chitosan can act as a coating or packaging material with excellent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties in addition to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. However, further research should be carried out to widen the applications of bioactive chitosan coatings to more foods and industries as well was their industrial scale-up, thus helping to minimize the use of plastic materials.

Synthesis, Characterization and Investigation of Cross-Linked Chitosan/(MnFe2O4) Nanocomposite Adsorption Potential to Extract U(VI) and Th(IV)

A cross-linked chitosan/(MnFe2O4) CCsMFO nanocomposite was prepared using co-precipitation methods and used as a nanomaterial to extract U(VI) and Th(IV) from an aqueous solution based on adsorption phenomena. The contact time of experiments shows a rapid extraction process within 30 min by the CCsMFO nanocomposite. The solution pH acts a critical role in determining qm value, where pH 3.0 was the best pH value to extract both ions. The pseudo-second-order equilibrium model illustrated the kinetics equilibrium modal extraction process. Adsorption isotherm of U(VI) at pH 3.0 by CCsMFO nanocomposite is an endothermic process. In contrast, the adsorption isotherm of Th(IV) at pH 3.0 by CCsMFO nanocomposite is an exothermic process. The reusability of CCsMFO nanocomposite was tested using basic eluents as suitable conditions for the chemical stability of CCsMFO nanocomposite; the reusability results show promising results for the removal of U(VI) adsorbed onto CCsMFO nanocomposite with 77.27%, after 12 h by Na2CO3 as eluent. At the same time, the reusability results show good reusability for removal of U(VI) adsorbed onto CCsMFO nanocomposite with 21.82%, after 8 h by EDTA as eluent.

Assessment of the Antibiofilm Performance of Chitosan-Based Surfaces in Marine Environments

Marine biofouling is a natural process often associated with biofilm formation on submerged surfaces, creating a massive economic and ecological burden. Although several antifouling paints have been used to prevent biofouling, growing ecological concerns emphasize the need to develop new and environmentally friendly antifouling approaches such as bio-based coatings. Chitosan (CS) is a natural polymer that has been widely used due to its outstanding biological properties, including non-toxicity and antimicrobial activity. This work aims to produce and characterize poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-CS surfaces with CS of different molecular weight (Mw) at different concentrations for application in marine paints. Loligo opalescens pens, a waste from the fishery industry, were used as a CS source. The antimicrobial activity of the CS and CS-functionalized surfaces was assessed against Cobetia marina, a model proteobacterium for marine biofouling. Results demonstrate that CS targets the bacterial cell membrane, and PLA-CS surfaces were able to reduce the number of culturable cells up to 68% compared to control, with this activity dependent on CS Mw. The antifouling performance was corroborated by Optical Coherence Tomography since PLA-CS surfaces reduced the biofilm thickness by up to 36%, as well as the percentage and size of biofilm empty spaces. Overall, CS coatings showed to be a promising approach to reducing biofouling in marine environments mimicked in this work, contributing to the valorization of fishing waste and encouraging further research on this topic.

Functionalized Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticle-Based Electrochemical Immunosensor for Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Antibody

The advancement in biosensors can overcome the challenges faced by conventional diagnostic techniques for the detection of the highly infectious severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Hence, the development of an accurate, rapid, sensitive, and selective diagnostic technique can mitigate adverse health conditions caused by SARS-CoV-2. This work proposes the development of an electrochemical immunosensor based on bio-nanocomposites for the sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies through the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) electroanalytical method. The facile synthesis of chitosan-functionalized titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-CS bio-nanocomposites) is performed using the sol-gel method. Characterization of the TiO2-CS bio-nanocomposite is accomplished using UV-vis spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrochemical performance is studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), DPV, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for its electroanalytical and biosensing capabilities. The developed immunosensing platform has a high sensitivity with a wide range of detection from 50 ag mL-1 to 1 ng mL-1. The detection limit of the SARS-CoV-2 antibody in buffer media is obtained to be 3.42 ag mL-1 and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) to be 10.38 ag mL-1. The electrochemical immunosensor has high selectivity in different interfering analytes and is stable for 10 days. The results suggest that the developed electrochemical immunosensor can be applicable for real sample analysis and further high-throughput testing.

Green chemistry principles for the synthesis of anti fungal active gum acacia-gold nanocomposite - natamycin (GA-AuNC-NT) against food spoilage fungal strain Aspergillus ochraceopealiformis and its marked Congo red dye adsorption efficacy

In this present study, a highly stable gum acacia -gold nanocomposite fabricated with food preservative agent natamycin (GA-AuNC-NT) was prepared via green science principles under in vitro conditions. Various characterisation techniques reveal highly stable structural, functional properties of the synthesised nanocomposite with marked antifungal activity and adsorption efficacy against congo red dye. The antifungal activity was investigated against the fungal strain Aspergillus ochraceopealiformis isolated from spoiled, expired bread. The well diffusion assay, fungal hyphae fragmentation assay and spore germination inhibition assay were used to determine the antifungal activity of the synthesised nanocomposite. Potential antifungal activity of the synthesised nanocomposite was confirmed by recording zone of inhibition, high rate of hyphae fragmentation and marked spore germination inhibition against the tested fungal strain. The molecular mechanism of antifungal activity was studied by measuring oxidative stress marker genes like catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) induction adopting quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (q RT-PCR). Among the various treatment, a notable reduction in all the tested marker genes expression was recorded in the nanocomposite treated fungal strain. Release profile studies using different solvents reveals sustained or controlled release of natamycin at the increasing periods. The synthesised nanocomposite's high safety or biocompatibility was evaluated with the Wistar animal model by determining notable changes in behavioural, biochemical, haematological and histopathological parameters. The synthesised nanocomposite did not exhibit any undesirable changes in all the tested parameters confirming the marked biosafety or biocompatibility. The nanocomposite was coated on the bread packaging material. The effect of packaging on the proximate composition, antioxidative enzymes status, and fungal growth of bread samples incubated under the incubation period were studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies reveal that the nanocomposite was effectively coated on the packaging material without changing size, shape, and functional groups. No changes in the proximate composition and antioxidative enzymes of the packaged bread samples incubated under different incubation periods reveal the nanocomposite's marked safety. The complete absence of the fungal growth also indicates the uniqueness of the nanocomposite. Further, the sorption studies revealed the utilisation of Langmuir mechanism and pseudo II order model successfully The present finding implies that the synthesised nanocomposite can be used as an effective, safe food preservative agent and adsorbent of toxic chemicals.

Recent development in nanoencapsulation and delivery of natural bioactives through chitosan scaffolds for various biological applications

Nowadays, nano/micro-encapsulation as a pioneering technique may significantly improve the bioavailability and durability of Natural bioactives. For this purpose, chitosan as a bioactive cationic natural polysaccharide has been frequently used as a carrier because of its distinct chemical and biological properties, including polycationic nature, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Moreover, polysaccharide-based nano/micro-formulations are a new and extensive trend in scientific research and development in the disciplines of biomedicine, bioorganic/ medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, agrochemistry, and the food industry. It promises a new paradigm in drug delivery systems and nanocarrier formulations. This review aims to summarize current developments in approaches for designing innovative chitosan micro/nano-matrix, with an emphasis on the encapsulation of natural bioactives. The special emphasis led to a detailed integrative scientific achievement of the functionalities and abilities for encapsulating natural bioactives and mechanisms regulated in vitro/in vivo release in various biological/physiological environments.

Characterizations and antibacterial activities of passion fruit peel pectin/chitosan composite films incorporated Piper betle L. leaf extract for preservation of purple eggplants

The present study aimed to synthesize biodegradable films based on crosslinked passion fruit peel pectin/chitosan (P/CH) films incorporated with a bioactive extract from Piper betle L. leaf, and investigate their morphological, mechanical, water vapor permeability, optical, and antibacterial properties. The thickness and water vapor permeability of P/CH blend films were proportional to the increasing concentration of Piper betle extract (PB). The tensile strength of P/CH/PB films was significantly reduced at 42.89% compared to the P/CH films. The morphological characterization affirmed that resultant blend films showed a well-organized homogeneous structure with no cracks. Moreover, the antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae increased with the increased concentration of PB in the obtained films. Our results demonstrated that P/CH/PB blend films could be potentially used for food packaging applications.

Porous chitosan-based nanocomposites containing gold nanoparticles. Increasing the catalytic performance through film porosity

The preparation of porous and non-porous chitosan thin-films containing gold nanoparticles was carried out, aiming to evaluate the effect of porosity on their catalytic response using the p-nitrophenol reduction as model reaction. To achieve this, both types of samples were decorated with gold nanoparticles having similar characteristics in terms of amount, size and shape, which were synthesized following a two-step adsorption-reduction process. The results demonstrated that the presence of porosity generates a considerable enhancement of the catalytic property. This behavior is reflected in higher kinetic constant and conversion values, along with a better recyclability after consecutive cycles. The inclusion of porosity in nanocomposites afforded k_obs values 7.5 times higher than the non-porous material, as well as conversion values as high as 80 % in <20 min. On the other hand, as an additional experiment, a porous sample prepared with half the amount of gold also exhibited a better performance than the non-porous catalyst, revealing that the porosity allowed to decrease the amount of catalytic metal used and still exhibiting k_obs values 5.9 times higher than the non-porous specimen. These studies demonstrate that there is an important synergistic support-nanostructure relationship, which strongly influences the performance of the nanomaterial.

Plant-Origin Feedstock Applications in Fully Green Food Packaging: The Potential for Tree-Free Paper and Plant-Origin Bio-Plastics in the Baltic Sea Region

Paper and plastic are the main materials used in food packaging. In the context of climate change, the importance of tree conservation and the mitigation of the negative environmental impacts caused by fossil consumption and deforestation is greater than ever before. This article reviews the potential of plant-origin feedstock from the Baltic Sea region for use in non-wood-fibre and bio-origin plastic food packaging production. It also presents a systematised literature review of the environmental impacts and applications of tree-free paper, plant-origin plastics, and natural-fibre-reinforced bio-composites in fully green food packaging. The results reveal that beneficial environmental impacts are achieved if waste or by-products are used as feedstock. While the production volumes of alternative materials in Europe are small (0.25% of paper is made of materials other than wood, and the share of bio-plastic is 0.9%), we found a large demand and potential for growth. The biggest volumes of natural fibre feedstock in Baltic Sea region countries are generated from wheat. Wheat straw, which is a by-product, has a production volume of 68.71 million tons and is potentially a significant non-wood-paper food packaging source. Agricultural waste generated from sugar beet, maize, potato, and wheat is an environmentally beneficial by-product that could be used for bio-plastic food packaging production.

A Brief Review on Fruit and Vegetable Extracts as Corrosion Inhibitors in Acidic Environments

The corrosion of metals, i.e., the initiation and acceleration of the surface deterioration of metals through an electrochemical reaction with the surrounding intrusive environment, is a global concern because of the economic and environmental impacts. Corrosion inhibitors are considered the most practical choice among the available corrosion protection techniques due to their effectiveness in terms of functionality and cost. The use of traditional and toxic corrosion inhibitors has led to environmental issues, arousing the need for green counterparts that are environmentally friendly, easily accessible, biodegradable, and cost-effective. In this review, the utilization of green corrosion inhibitors purely acquired from renewable sources is explored, with an in-depth focus on the recent advancements in the use of fruit and vegetable extracts as green corrosion inhibitors. In particular, fruits and vegetables are natural sources of various phytochemicals that exhibit key potential in corrosion inhibition. To shed light on the true potential of such extracts in the protection of steel in acidic environments, the experimental techniques involved in corrosion inhibition and the mechanism of corrosion inhibition are discussed in detail. The study highlights the potential of fruit and vegetable extracts as non-toxic, economical, and effective corrosion inhibitors in the pursuit of green chemistry. In addition to discussing and outlining the current status and opportunities for employing fruit and vegetable extracts as corrosion inhibitors, the current review outlines the challenges involved in the utilization of such extracts in corrosion inhibition.

Recent Advancements in Smart Biogenic Packaging: Reshaping the Future of the Food Packaging Industry

Due to their complete non-biodegradability, current food packages have resulted in major environmental issues. Today’s smart consumer is looking for alternatives that are environmentally friendly, durable, recyclable, and naturally rather than synthetically derived. It is a well-established fact that complete replacement with environmentally friendly packaging materials is unattainable, and bio-based plastics should be the future of the food packaging industry. Natural biopolymers and nanotechnological interventions allow the creation of new, high-performance, light-weight, and environmentally friendly composite materials, which can replace non-biodegradable plastic packaging materials. This review summarizes the recent advancements in smart biogenic packaging, focusing on the shift from conventional to natural packaging, properties of various biogenic packaging materials, and the amalgamation of technologies, such as nanotechnology and encapsulation; to develop active and intelligent biogenic systems, such as the use of biosensors in food packaging. Lastly, challenges and opportunities in biogenic packaging are described, for their application in sustainable food packing systems.

Ultrasonic Synthesis of Nanochitosan and Its Size Effects on Turbidity Removal and Dealkalization in Wastewater Treatment

A detailed study on the synthesis of chitosan nanoparticles under ultrasonication is reported in this paper. By using this simple technique, chitosan particles in nanometer range can be easily prepared without using any harmful and expensive chemicals. The results show that increasing the ultrasonic irradiation time and ultrasonic wave amplitude are the key factors for producing discrete chitosan nanoparticles with narrow particle size distribution. The resulting nanoparticles show superior turbidity removal efficiency (75.4%) and dealkalization (58.3%) in wastewater treatment than the bulk chitosan solid (35.4% and 11.1%, respectively), thus offering an eco-friendly and promising approach for treating wastewater via the coagulation/flocculation process.

Nanocomposite base on carboxymethylcellulose hydrogel: Simultaneous absorbent of ethylene and humidity to increase the shelf life of banana fruit

The main purpose of this study was to increase shelf life of banana using active hydrogel. For this purpose, carboxymethylcellulose/nanofiber cellulose/potassium permanganate (CMC/NFC/KMnO₄) hydrogel film was prepared. The morphology and physicochemical properties of CMC hydrogels was investigated. The prepared films were used as humidity/ethylene absorbent in banana packaging for 30 days at 0 and 25 °C. The physical, mechanical and sensory properties of bananas were studied during storage. SEM images confirmed the presence of nanofibers in the hydrogel structure. NFC and KMnO₄ increased the tensile strength of the film and decreased its elongation. On the 15th day of storage, bananas packaged with optimal active hydrogel (CMC/NFC/KMnO₄) at 25 °C had a flavor of 3 and a general acceptance of 3.5, while control bananas had a flavor of 0.5 and a general acceptance of less than 1. On the 30th day of storage, bananas packaged with optimal active hydrogel at 25 °C had a toughness of 4 (N·s) and a firmness of 20 (N), while control bananas had a toughness of about 1 (N·s) and a firmness of about 8 (N). On the 30th day of storage, the humidity inside the package of bananas packed with the optimum active hydrogel at 25 °C was 59.5%, while the humidity in the control packages was 85%, indicating that the hydrogel was able to absorb the moisture inside the package. Totally it can be said that CMC/NFC/KmnO₄ hydrogel can increase shelf life of a banana by simultaneously controlling ethylene and humidity in food packaging.

Nanocoating Is a New Way for Biofouling Prevention

Biofouling is a major concern to the maritime industry. Biofouling increases fuel consumption, accelerates corrosion, clogs membranes and pipes, and reduces the buoyancy of marine installations, such as ships, platforms, and nets. While traditionally marine installations are protected by toxic biocidal coatings, due to recent environmental concerns and legislation, novel nanomaterial-based anti-fouling coatings are being developed. Hybrid nanocomposites of organic-inorganic materials give a possibility to combine the characteristics of both groups of material generating opportunities to prevent biofouling. The development of bio-inspired surface designs, progress in polymer science and advances in nanotechnology is significantly contributing to the development of eco-friendly marine coatings containing photocatalytic nanomaterials. The review mainly discusses photocatalysis, antifouling activity, and formulation of coatings using metal and metal oxide nanomaterials (nanoparticles, nanowires, nanorods). Additionally, applications of nanocomposite coatings for inhibition of micro- and macro-fouling in marine environments are reviewed.

Chitosan-Based Antimicrobial Coating for Improving Postharvest Shelf Life of Pineapple

Rapid postharvest losses and quality deteriorations in pineapple are major challenges to growers and handlers. Chitosan-based coatings on fruit surfaces have gained importance in recent years to enhance postharvest shelf life of the fruits. In this study, aloe vera gel was added as a natural antioxidant in chitosan-based composite coating containing ZnO nanoparticles. The developed formulation was applied on the surface of freshly harvested pineapple fruits. ZnO nanoparticles were used as an antimicrobial agent. Coated pineapple fruits were evaluated for weight loss, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, decay index, maturity index, and sensory attributes, including visual appearance, periodically at 5 day interval during storage. The results showed that the coating of the fruit reduced weight loss by about 5%, and also delayed ripening and oxidative decay compared to the uncoated fruit. Thus, the developed coating formulation is a promising sustainable solution to reduce postharvest losses and to extend shelf life of pineapples.

Antimicrobial Food Packaging with Biodegradable Polymers and Bacteriocins

Innovations in food and drink packaging result mainly from the needs and requirements of consumers, which are influenced by changing global trends. Antimicrobial and active packaging are at the forefront of current research and development for food packaging. One of the few natural polymers on the market with antimicrobial properties is biodegradable and biocompatible chitosan. It is formed as a result of chitin deacetylation. Due to these properties, the production of chitosan alone or a composite film based on chitosan is of great interest to scientists and industrialists from various fields. Chitosan films have the potential to be used as a packaging material to maintain the quality and microbiological safety of food. In addition, chitosan is widely used in antimicrobial films against a wide range of pathogenic and food spoilage microbes. Polylactic acid (PLA) is considered one of the most promising and environmentally friendly polymers due to its physical and chemical properties, including renewable, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and is considered safe (GRAS). There is great interest among scientists in the study of PLA as an alternative food packaging film with improved properties to increase its usability for food packaging applications. The aim of this review article is to draw attention to the existing possibilities of using various components in combination with chitosan, PLA, or bacteriocins to improve the properties of packaging in new food packaging technologies. Consequently, they can be a promising solution to improve the quality, delay the spoilage of packaged food, as well as increase the safety and shelf life of food.

Chitosan Nanoparticles as a Promising Nanomaterial for Encapsulation of Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) Peel Extract as a Natural Source of Antioxidants

The encapsulation of pomegranate peel extract (PPE) in chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) is an advantageous strategy to protect sensitive constituents of the extract. This study was aimed to develop PPE-loaded CSNPs and characterize their physical, structural morphology, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Spherical NPs were successfully synthesized with a mean diameter of 174–898 nm, a zeta potential (ZP) of +3 – +36 mV, an encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 26–70%, and a loading capacity (LC) of 14–21% depending on their loaded extract concentrations. Based on these results, CSNPs with chitosan:PPE ratio of 1:0.50 (w/w) exhibited good physical stability (ZP = 27 mV), the highest loading (LC = 20%) and desirable encapsulation efficiency (EE = 51%), and thus, selected as optimally loaded NPs. The FTIR analysis of PPE-CSNPs demonstrated no spectral changes indicating no possible chemical interaction between the PPE and CSNPs, which confirms that the PPE was physically entrapped within NPs. Moreover, FTIR spectra of pure PPE showed specific absorption bands (at 3293–3450 cm⁻¹) attributed to the incidence of phenolic compounds, such as tannic acid, ellagic acid and gallic acid. Total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant analysis of selected CSNPs revealed that the encapsulated NPs had significantly lower TPC and antioxidant activity than those of pure PPE, indicating that CSNPs successfully preserved PPE from rapid release during the measurements. Antibacterial tests indicated that pure PPE and PPE-loaded CSNPs effectively retarded the growth of Gram-positive S. aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.27 and 1.1 mg/mL, respectively. Whereas Gram-negative E. coli, due to its protective cell membrane, was not retarded by pure PPE and PPE-CSNPs at the MIC values tested in this study. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis confirmed the incidence of various phytochemicals, including phenolic compounds, fatty acids, and furfurals, with possible antioxidant or antimicrobial properties. Overall, CSNPs can be regarded as suitable nanomaterials for the protection and controlled delivery of natural antioxidants/antimicrobials, such as PPE in food packaging applications.

Chitosan Nanocomposite Coatings Containing Chemically Resistant ZnO-SnOx Core-shell Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Antifouling

Functional nanocomposites with biopolymers and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles is an emerging application of photocatalysis in antifouling coatings. The reduced chemical stability of ZnO in the acidic media in which chitosan is soluble affects the performance of chitosan nanocomposites in antifouling applications. In this study, a thin shell of amorphous tin dioxide (SnO_x) was grown on the surface of ZnO to form ZnO–SnO_x core–shell nanoparticles that improved the chemical stability of the photocatalyst nanoparticles, as examined at pH 3 and 6. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO–SnO_x in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light showed a higher efficiency than that of ZnO nanoparticles due to the passivation of electronic defects. Chitosan-based antifouling coatings with varying percentages of ZnO or ZnO–SnO_x nanoparticles, with or without the glutaraldehyde (GA) crosslinking of chitosan, were developed and studied. The incorporation of photocatalysts into the chitosan matrix enhanced the thermal stability of the coatings. Through a mesocosm study using running natural seawater, it was found that chitosan/ZnO–SnO_x/GA coatings enabled better inhibition of bacterial growth compared to chitosan coatings alone. This study demonstrates the antifouling potential of chitosan nanocomposite coatings containing core–shell nanoparticles as an effective solution for the prevention of biofouling.

Cinnamon extract loaded electrospun chitosan/gelatin membrane with antibacterial activity

This study develops chitosan/gelatin nanofiber membranes with sustained release capacity to prevent infection by delivering cinnamon extract (CE) in the implanted site. The effects of the incorporation of CE content (2-6%) on the properties of the nanofibers were evaluated. Morphological studies using SEM indicated that loading the extract did not affect the average diameter of nanofiber mats, which remained around 140-170 nm. TGA and FTIR spectroscopy results confirmed successful CE loading. Furthermore, the results showed that incorporating extract into the nanofibers enhanced their degradation behavior, antibacterial activity, and biocompatibility. Cultured cells attached to and proliferate on the nanofiber membrane with high cell viability capacity until the CE content reached 4%. The extract release profile consisted of a burst release in the first 6 h, followed by a controlled release in the next 138 h. Therefore, CE loaded chitosan/gelatin nanofiber is an excellent construct for biomedical applications.

Nano zero-valent iron on activated carbon cloth support as Fenton-like catalyst for efficient color and COD removal from melanoidin wastewater

To reduce undesired iron leaching in Fenton reaction and to realize reusability of catalyst, chitosan-coated activated carbon cloth support loaded with nano zero-valent iron (ACC-CH-nZVI) was applied as a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst to treat melanoidin wastewater. Chitosan coating on ACC by chemical crosslinking results in 6% chitosan on ACC subsequently loading 3.5% iron. At optimum conditions, ACC-CH-nZVI leads to 88.4% and 76.2% of color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, respectively, upon treating synthetic melanoidin wastewater of 8000 mg/l COD. The corresponding weight ratio of consumed H₂O₂ to COD is 1.02, far below the stoichiometric ratio 2.125, indicating the economic value of this catalyst. Reusability of ACC-CH-nZVI is demonstrated for five cycles of treatment with minimal iron leaching (<2%). The high removal efficiency and very low levels of iron leaching suggests that ACC-CH-nZVI is a highly efficient and cost-effective catalyst for Fenton-like oxidation of non-biodegradable organic wastes in water.

New water-soluble chitin derivative with high antibacterial properties for potential application in active food coatings

The synthesis of new chitin derivatives through ultrasound-assisted treatment of the chitin with 1-azido-3-chloropropan-2-ol under Green Chemistry conditions is described. This is the first example of ultrasound-assisted polymer analogues transformation of chitin unaccompanied by noticeable backbone degradation or deacetylation. The obtained water-soluble azido chitin derivatives are characterized by high antibacterial activity, which is comparable with that of commercial antibiotics ampicillin and gentamicin. At the same time, they were demonstrated almost identical in vitro toxicity as unmodified chitin and chitosan. The antibacterial activity of the obtained polymers is mainly provided by azido moiety in their macromolecules. The conjugation of azido moiety to chitin backbone strongly diminishes the toxicity of the azido pharmacophore, but preserves its antibacterial properties. The most potent chitin derivative was used for the film coating of Ricotta cheese samples. This food coating proved to be efficient for the prolongation of shelf life of Ricotta cheese.
