Abstract
Background:Objectives:Analyse the effect of secukinumab in terms of the patient´s own variables, specifically: fatigue, sleep, pain and quality of life in patients with psoriatic arthritis or spondyloarthritis. Methods:A multicentric longtitudinal observational prospective study was carried out at 6 months in patients who begin treatment with secukinumab. At the start and after 6 months the following data was collected on the outcome: pain through an visual analogue scale (VAS), fatigue using the FACIT-fatigue scale, sleeping problems using the insomnia severity index (ISI) and quality of life with the EuroQol-3L-5D and the PsAQoL.The sample can be described in terms of the distribution of the variables through measures of central tendency. It was analysed if the change after 6 months was statistically relevant using Student´s t-test for paired data in the case of FACIT, VAS, PsAQoL and ISI and chi-squared for the dimensions of the EQ-5D. The size of the effect of each of the measurements taken was calculated using Cohen’s D. the results are given grouped by disease and globally. The analysis was carried out using Stata v12 (College Station Tx, USA)Results:In table 1, the changes in the scales of normal distribution can be seen. Apart from general VAS, all the scales experience significant relevant changes. The PROs preferred by the patient with the best therapeutic response is the quality of sleep. The adjustment of the regression models does not produce changes in the results, apart from small adjustments to the condidence intervals (final column table 1). The subdomain in which the most significant change in the EQ-5D is produced is in that of pain and discomfort. Conclusion:After 6 months patients who begin treatment with secukinumab, present with improvements in all sizes of the effects of the treatment in the various studied scales. The improvement achieves global and generalised statistical significance after 6 months of study. The greatest effect is on sleep, quality of life and fatigue. The measurements of the outcomes reported by the patients are a clinical value added to our objective evaluations of the health and activity of the disease, and allow us, in a more integrated and comprehensive manner, to undertake a more exact and close evaluation of their state of health and wellbeing.Disclosure of Interests:JUAN JOSE LERMA: None declared, Antonio Gracia: None declared, Antonio Perez: None declared, Amalia Rueda: None declared, Clara Molina: None declared, M. Abstract
Spatial and temporal variability of mercury concentrations in sediments was evaluated in 210Pb-dated sediment cores from offshore and intertidal areas in the southern Gulf of Mexico. In offshore cores, mercury concentrations were comparable (11.2-69.2 ng g-1), and intermediate between concentrations in intertidal cores from the eastern (6.0-34.4 ng g-1) and the western (34.9-137.7 ng g-1) inlets of Términos Lagoon. The enrichment factor (EF) indicated minimal contamination (EF < 2) in most offshore cores, whereas in some intertidal cores steadily increasing mercury enrichment and fluxes were observed along the past century. No evidence of oil industry related mercury contamination was found, as the minor but increasing enrichment in intertidal cores is most likely related to land-derived sources such as catchment eroded soils and waste water runoff. Results highlight the importance to control catchment erosion and untreated sewage releases to reduce mercury loadings to the coastal zone.

Abstract
The Campeche Sound is the major offshore oil producing area in the Southern Gulf of Mexico (SGoM). To evaluate the impact of oil related activities in the ocean floor sediments, we analyzed the geochemical (major and trace element, organic carbon and hydrocarbon concentrations) and biological (benthic foraminifera) composition of 62 superficial sediment samples, from 13 to 1336 m water depth. Cluster and Factor analysis of all the variables indicate that their distribution patterns are mainly controlled by differences between the terrigenous and carbonate platforms in the SGoM. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages were abundant and diverse, and their distribution patterns are mainly determined by water depth and sedimentary environment. However, most of the abundant species are opportunistic and/or low-oxygen tolerant, and many of their tests show oil stains and infillings, characteristic of oil polluted locations, suggesting the environment has been modified by natural seepage or oil-related activities. To determine if these conditions are natural or anthropogenic in origin, pre - industrial settings should be studied. Organic carbon (Corg) content (0.6-2.9%) and total hydrocarbon concentrations (PAHs 1.0-29.5 μg kg-1) were usually higher around the oil platforms area, the natural hydrocarbon seeps ("chapopoteras") area and offshore rivers, but there is no accumulation of oil related trace elements in these areas. However, the comparison with international sediment quality benchmarks indicates that Cd, Cr and Ni concentrations are above the threshold effect level, and also As, Ba and Cu are above the probable effect level benchmarks, which indicate that these element concentrations might be of potential ecological concern. Comprehensive studies involving different proxies, and assessing pre-industrial conditions, must be undertaken before assessing environmental health of marine benthic ecosystems.

Abstract
Trace element (As, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) enrichment trends during the past century, were assessed in thirteen 210Pb-dated sediment cores from the southern Gulf of Mexico, with the purpose to evaluate the impact on the environment, and potentially on public health, of the offshore oil industry and of oil spills such as that of the Ixtoc1 well blowout in 1979. The trace element composition was quite homogeneous among cores; and the pre-industrial concentrations of Ba, Cr, Cu and Ni are naturally high in the region, as to reach levels of potential ecological concern. The influence of multiple and simultaneous processes (e.g. industrial activities, natural seeps, fluvial discharges) on the trace element concentrations is difficult to disentangle. Some cores suggested long-term preservation of putative oil spill traces, although it was not possible to attribute their origin. The Al-normalized redox element ratios, and the crude oil contamination ratio, suggested that these events occurred along almost four decades, and that the traces attributed to the Ixtoc1 spill were comparable to background conditions, most likely owing to active natural oil seeps in the area. In most cases there was a trend towards a lowering in the supply of trace elements; this might be associated with environmental controls in the region since the 1980s. This study highlights the relevance of using dated environmental archives to reconstruct the historical trends of trace metal contamination in areas where long-term environmental studies are scarce.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) commonly have an underlying genetic predisposition. However, genetic tests nowadays in use have very low sensitivity for identifying subjects at risk of VTE. Thrombo inCode(®) is a new genetic tool that has demonstrated very good sensitivity, thanks to very good coverage of the genetic variants that modify the function of the coagulation pathway. OBJECTIVE To conduct an economic analysis of risk assessment of VTE from the perspective of the Spanish National Health System with Thrombo inCode(®) (a clinical-genetic function for assessing the risk of VTE) versus the conventional/standard method used to date (factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A). METHODS An economic model was created from the National Health System perspective, using a decision tree in patients aged 45 years with a life expectancy of 81 years. The predictive capacity of VTE, based on identification of thrombophilia using Thrombo inCode(®) and using the standard method, was obtained from two case-control studies conducted in two different populations (S. PAU and MARTHA; 1,451 patients in all). Although this is not always the case, patients who were identified as suffering from thrombophilia were subject to preventive treatment of VTE with warfarin, leading to a reduction in the number of VTE events and an increased risk of severe bleeding. The health state utilities (quality-adjusted life-years [QALYs]) and costs (in 2013 EUR values) were obtained from the literature and Spanish sources. RESULTS On the basis of a price of EUR 180 for Thrombo inCode(®), this would be the dominant option (more effective and with lower costs than the standard method) in both populations. The Monte Carlo probabilistic analyses indicate that the dominance would occur in 100 % of the simulations in both populations. The threshold price of Thrombo inCode(®) needed to reach the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) generally accepted in Spain (EUR 30,000 per QALY gained) would be between EUR 3,950 (in the MARTHA population) and EUR 11,993 (in the S. PAU population). CONCLUSION According to the economic model, Thrombo inCode(®) is the dominant option in assessing the risk of VTE, compared with the standard method currently used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the perinatal results of infants born between 23 and 25.6 weeks of gestation. METHODS Medical charts of all women giving birth prematurely (23-25.6 w) from January 2005 to December 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Cases of malformed infants or deliveries elsewhere were excluded. RESULTS 198 infants were included. Chorioamnionitis occurred in 86 (43.4%) of the whole group: 26 (86.7%) in the 23-week; 35 (53.8%) in the 24-week and 25 (24.3%) in the 25-week groups. Foetal maturation with antenatal corticosteroids was complete in 119 cases (60.1%): 4 (13.3%) in the 23-week; 35 (53.8%) in the 24-week and 80 (77.7%) in the 25-week groups. Foetal death at birth occurred in 22 cases (11%) and 61 newborns (30.8%) died in the neonatal period. Of the 106 survivors with 2 years complete follow-up, 45 infants (42.4%) did not present sequelae; 16 infants (15.1%) had severe sequelae. A 66.6% (4) of infants born at 23 weeks of gestation did not present sequelae compared with a 32.3% (11) at 24 weeks and 45.4% (30) at 25 weeks. CONCLUSIONS The chorioamnionitis rate was higher when gestational age was lower. The foetal maturation rate was higher when gestational age was higher. A low severe sequelae rate was observed in the whole series, particularly in the 23-week group where the rate was lower than expected; however, these results could have been influenced by the small size of the 23-week group.

Economic evaluation of Cardio inCode®, a clinical-genetic function for coronary heart disease risk assessment. Appl Health Econ Health Policy 2013; 11:531-542. Abstract
BACKGROUND A clinical–genetic function (Cardio inCode®) was generated using genetic variants associated with coronary heart disease (CHD), but not with classical CHD risk factors, to achieve a more precise estimation of the CHD risk of individuals by incorporating genetics into risk equations [Framingham and REGICOR (Registre Gironí del Cor)]. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to conduct an economic analysis of the CHD risk assessment with Cardio inCode®, which incorporates the patient’s genetic risk into the functions of REGICOR and Framingham, compared with the standard method (using only the functions). METHODS A Markov model was developed with seven states of health (low CHD risk, moderate CHD risk, high CHD risk, CHD event, recurrent CHD, chronic CHD, and death). The reclassification of CHD risk derived from genetic information and transition probabilities between states was obtained from a validation study conducted in cohorts of REGICOR (Spain) and Framingham (USA). It was assumed that patients classified as at moderate risk by the standard method were the best candidates to test the risk reclassification with Cardio inCode®. The utilities and costs (€; year 2011 values) of Markov states were obtained from the literature and Spanish sources. The analysis was performed from the perspective of the Spanish National Health System, for a life expectancy of 82 years in Spain. An annual discount rate of 3.5 % for costs and benefits was applied. RESULTS For a Cardio inCode® price of €400, the cost per QALY gained compared with the standard method [incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER)] would be €12,969 and €21,385 in REGICOR and Framingham cohorts, respectively. The threshold price of Cardio inCode® to reach the ICER threshold generally accepted in Spain (€30,000/QALY) would range between €668 and €836. The greatest benefit occurred in the subgroup of patients with moderate–high risk, with a high-risk reclassification of 22.8 % and 12 % of patients and an ICER of €1,652/QALY and €5,884/QALY in the REGICOR and Framingham cohorts, respectively. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the stability of the study results. CONCLUSIONS Cardio inCode® is a cost-effective risk score option in CHD risk assessment compared with the standard method.

Abstract
Statins are a family of drugs used in hypercholesterolemia. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of statins on body and liver fat accumulation in obese Zucker rats. Seventy Zucker (fa/fa) rats were divided into seven groups. Rats from six statin groups were treated with pravastatin, simvastatin, atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, fluvastatin and lovastatin respectively, at a dose of 0.6 mg/kg body weight/day. After 6 weeks, liver and white adipose tissue from intra-abdominal and subcutaneous locations were dissected and weighed. Subcutaneous adipose tissue from rosuvastatin, atorvastatin, fluvastatin and lovastatin treated rats was significantly increased. Fatty acid synthase (FAS) activity was increased by the administration of fluvastatin and lovastatin, as was glucose-6-P dehydrogenase (G6PDH) by the administration of atorvastatin and lovastatin. No changes were observed in malic enzyme (ME) activity. Furthermore, heparin-releasable lipoprotein lipase (HR-LPL) was increased in all groups where the subcutaneous depot was increased, and total LPL increased only in rosuvastatin and fluvastatin-treated groups. With regard to liver, there were no changes in weight but the amount of triacylglycerols was increased in rosuvastatin group, as well as its liver damage was higher. In this group FAS and G6PDH activities were increased and no changes were observed in ME, acyl CoA oxidase (ACO) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1a (CPT-1a) activities. All statins, with the exception of simvastatin, worsen insulin resistance. These results show that statins have different effects on body fat accumulation. Moreover, rosuvastatin also shows a prosteatotic effect. These results should be taken into account for statin choice in prescription.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION An incorrect transfer of patients to paediatric surgery clinic results in clinic saturation and both patient and medical staff discomfort. As a consequence the quality of medical care is deteriorated. AIM 1) To evaluate the transfer of new patients to paediatric surgery clinic from primary paediatric care considering the medical diagnosis and the surgical calendar, looking for the most common mistakes. 2) To analyze the inconvenience of a wrong indication for both our patients and the medical staff. 3) To propose new measures to decrease the rate of patients incorrectly transferred. MATERIAL AND METHOD An observational retrospective study was performed based on medical records of new patients evaluated in paediatric surgery clinic between september 2010 and january 2012. Age, address, diagnosis, transfer indication and referring centre were collected. RESULTS Two thousand four hundred thirty medical records were reviewed from new patients finding an incorrect transfer in 44.28% of them (2.37 children/day). From these cases wrong transfer was related to surgical calendar in 18.59% and wrong diagnosis in 81.41% of them. Most common mistakes due to wrong diagnosis were Phimosis (91.45% n= 113) and Cryptorquidism (85.29% n = 122); mistakes related to surgical calendar were Umbilical Hernia (88.46%), Hypospadias (72.22% n= 31) and Hydrocele (70.83% n = 12). Mean distance of transfer for patients wrongly referred outside the metropolitan area was 35.92 km (Range: 7.1-129). CONCLUSIONS We have detected major mistakes in patient transfer from primary paediatric care. The knowledge of surgical calendar and accurate diagnosis should avoid these problems. These mistakes result in deterioration of medical care quality, patient discomfort and clinic saturation. It is necessary to propose and develop measures that improve the knowledge of surgical calendar and to make more accurate surgical diagnosis in primary paediatric care.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determinate the semen quality of frozen-thawed samples that were chilled for up to 2 days before freezing. The ejaculates (n = 18) from six dogs were collected, pooled and divided into six aliquots. The first aliquot (C, control) was frozen in liquid nitrogen using a conventional protocol to reach a final concentration of 100 × 10(6) spermatozoa/ml, 20% egg yolk and 5% glycerol. The remaining five aliquots were diluted with a chilled extender (Tris-glucose and 20% egg yolk) and cooled at 4 °C as follows: R1, the semen was cooled for 1 h; R6, the semen was cooled for 6 h; R12, the semen was cooled for 12 h; R24, the semen was cooled for 24 h and R48, the semen was cooled for 48 h. After the chilling period, a second extender was added (Tris-glucose, 20% egg yolk, 10% glycerol and Equex at 1%) to reach a final composition similar to aliquot C, and then, the semen samples (R1, R6, R12, R24 and R48) were frozen in liquid nitrogen. The post-thaw sperm quality was assessed in 30 straws from each experimental group. After freezing-thawing, the total sperm motility (approximately 60-70%) in the semen chilled for up to 48 h did not show any differences from the samples frozen by the conventional cryopreservation method (63.2%). No significant differences were detected in the percentages of abnormal sperm cells among the fresh semen, the control group and the frozen samples after the different cooling times. Finally, the post-thaw percentages of damaged acrosomes showed a very uniform distribution, with mean values ranging between 7% and 10.5%. The results clearly demonstrated that cooling the semen up to 48 h before freezing did not produce a decrease in the semen quality when was compared with semen frozen by a traditional procedure.

Abstract
This study assessed the efficacy of a dry shipper to preserve canine and caprine semen samples. After equilibration, semen straws from six Majorera bucks and five dogs were frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen (LN). Thirty days after freezing, half of the frozen straws were transferred from LN to a dry shipper (DS). Then, thawing was performed at 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 days and the percentages of motile spermatozoa, acrosome intact spermatozoa and abnormal spermatozoa were determined. The sperm motility (total and progressive) of canine semen samples preserved with DS was quite similar to those preserved in LN, and no significant differences were observed throughout the experimental period. In addition, no differences were observed in the number of abnormal spermatozoa (range: 13.2-19.0%) or intact acrosome (range 91.3-95%) between both storage protocols. Buck semen samples showed equivalent levels of progressive motility (between 50% and 60%) and intact acrosome membrane (around 70%) during the first 3 days of storage in both procedures; however, from the fifth day of storage onwards, a notable decrease in semen quality was observed in the samples preserved in DS, showing a dramatic fall in the semen viability after 7 days of preservation (12.3% and 36.8%, progressive fast spermatozoa and acrosome integrity, respectively). In dog samples, the present study confirmed that seminal quality did not show modifications for the preservation period (7 days), confirming the efficacy of the dry shipper to preserve frozen samples for a short time. However, under the circumstances reported in this study, the sperm quality of buck samples preserved in the dry shipper only held during the first 3 days of storage, and therefore, its practical application could be more limited.

Abstract
The influence of sexual stimulation and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) administration on plasma testosterone concentrations was assessed in five male Beagles. Each dog was exposed to three experimental treatments: C treatment (Control, no stimulation), hCG treatment (dogs were SC injected with 1000 IU of hCG) and sexually stimulated (SS) treatment where semen was collected from the males. All dogs were exposed to all treatments, one per week for three consecutive weeks, with a 1 week of rest between treatments. Blood samples were taken with the same time intervals (0, 10, 30, 60 and 120 min) relative to treatments. Plasma testosterone concentrations were determined with a solid-phase I(125) radioimmunoassay. In the control treatment, the testosterone plasma levels did not show significant changes throughout the tested period (mean values ranging between 2.8 and 4.7 ng/ml); the hCG group presented a significant increase (p < 0.05) in plasma testosterone levels 30 min after hCG administration and had the highest value (8.7 ng/ml) at 120 min post-hCG. Finally, the SS group revealed a slight reduction in testosterone concentration immediately after ejaculation, but the values remained nearly unaltered until 120 min after semen collection. When the groups were compared, the hCG group showed higher plasma testosterone values (p < 0.05) than did the C and SS groups, starting at 30 min and continuing until the end of sampling. This study demonstrates that sexual stimulation associated with semen collection does not produce transitory modifications in plasma testosterone concentrations.

Abstract
This study assessed the effect of different semen storage temperatures and the influence of semen pooling in semen viability. In experiment 1, semen samples (n = 30) of five Majorera bucks were individually processed [Individual semen (IS)] and after the first dilution (Tris-yolk extender), semen-diluted aliquots from each male were pooled semen (PS). Thereafter, semen samples (IS and PS) were preserved as fresh semen (37 and 20°C), chilled semen (4°C) and frozen semen. Sperm motility and the percentage of abnormal sperm cells and intact membrane acrosomes were defined. Semen preservation at 20 and 4°C did not modify the quality of spermatozoa for the first 24 h, but the conservation at 37°C caused a dramatic fall in the semen motility from 12 h onwards. Furthermore, the longevity of frozen-thawed semen was limited to 4-6 h. No differences were observed in semen parameters when PS was compared with semen from individual males in any of the preservation protocols assessed. In experiment 2, 120 goats were distributed in four experimental groups: in group fresh individual semen (FIS, n = 30) and group frozen-thawed individual semen (FTIS, n = 30), does were transcervically inseminated with fresh semen and frozen-thawed semen from each individual male, respectively, and in group fresh pooled semen (FPS, n = 30) and group frozen-thawed pooled semen (FTPS, n = 30), goats were transcervically inseminated with FPS and FTPS, respectively. The kidding rate was very close in the FIS and FPS groups (70.0% and 73.7%, respectively), and no significant differences were observed in the fertility rate between FTIS and FTPS. The results of this study confirmed that semen samples may be preserved satisfactorily for 24 h both at 20 and 4°C. In addition, the mixture of semen of different bucks did not significantly modify the semen parameters when compared with semen from individual males.

Abstract
This study evaluates the effect of coculture with goat oviduct epithelial cells (GOEC) on the pregnancy rate, embryo survival rate and offspring development after direct transfer of vitrified/thawed caprine in vitro produced (IVP) embryos. Oocytes were recovered from slaughterhouse goat ovaries, matured and inseminated with frozen/thawed capacitated semen, and presumptive zygotes were randomly cultured in synthetic oviduct fluid (SOF) (n=352) or GOEC (n=314). The percentage of cleaved embryos reaching the blastocyst stage was 28% and 20% in SOF and GOEC, respectively (P<0.05). Overall, 26 blastocysts of SOF were transferred freshly in pairs to recipient goats, whereas 58 of SOF and 36 of GOEC were vitrified and transferred directly in pairs to recipient goats after thawing without removal of cryoprotectants or morphological evaluation. The kidding rate was 92% for SOF fresh, 14% for SOF vitrified (P<0.001) and 56% for GOEC vitrified (P<0.05); the difference was also significant between vitrified groups (P<0.01). The embryo survival rate was 62% for SOF fresh, 9% for SOF vitrified (P<0.001) and 33% for GOEC vitrified (P<0.05) with a significant difference between vitrified groups (P<0.01). The results showed that the coculture of IVP goat embryos with GOEC significantly improves the pregnancy and embryo survival rates and leads to the birth of healthy offspring. However, further research using more defined GOEC coculture is required to confirm its capacity to increase the success rate of IVP embryo technology in goat.

Abstract
New Neandertal fossils from the Mousterian site of Cova Negra in the Valencia region of Spain are described, and a comprehensive study of the entire human fossil sample is provided. The new specimens significantly augment the sample of human remains from this site and make Cova Negra one of the richest human paleontological sites on the Iberian Peninsula. The new specimens include cranial and postcranial elements from immature individuals and provide an opportunity to study the ontogenetic appearance of adult Neandertal characteristics in this Pleistocene population. Children younger than 10 years of age constitute four of the seven minimum number of individuals in the sample, and this relative abundance of children at Cova Negra is similar that in to other Neandertal sites in Europe and southwest Asia. The recognition of diagnostic Neandertal features in several of the specimens, as well as their western European context and late Pleistocene age, suggests that all the human remains from Cova Negra represent Neandertals. The archaeological evidence from Cova Negra indicates sporadic, short-term occupations of the site, suggesting a high degree of mobility among Neandertals.

Abstract
This study was carried out to assess the in vitro quality of canine semen frozen in an ultrafreezer at -152 degrees C and to evaluate the male-to-male variation of frozen semen in five male dogs of the Canarian Mastiff breed. Four ejaculates of each dog were processed individually (5% glycerol and 0.5% Equex) to reach a final concentration of 100 x 10(6) spermatozoa/ml. Then, two freezing techniques were tested to assess the seminal quality (sperm motility, live spermatozoa and abnormal sperm cell percentages) at 1, 30, 60, 120 and 360 days after freezing: (i) semen was frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen; (ii) semen was frozen and stored in the ultrafreezer at -152 degrees C. After freezing-thawing, both freezing protocols showed no significant differences in sperm motility and the percentages of live and abnormal spermatozoa. On the other hand, the microscopic characteristics of spermatozoa in fresh semen were practically similar among males; however, after the semen processing and freezing, significant differences were observed (p < 0.05) among males, especially as regards sperm motility. This inter-individual variability was detected in both freezing protocols, showing that the male-to-male variation in the seminal quality post-freezing was independent of the freezing technique used. The in vitro results obtained in the Canarian Mastiff breed confirmed that the use of ultra-freezers at -152 degrees C is a potential alternative to liquid nitrogen for storing canine semen for long periods of time.

Abstract
Goat semen is different from that of other domestic species in its limited tolerance to the inclusion of egg yolk in the freezing medium, and this tolerance depends on the presence of enzymes in the seminal plasma that react with egg yolk, producing toxic compounds to the spermatozoa. Moreover, the goat is a seasonal breeder that shows variations in semen quality throughout the year, and those variations may affect semen freezability; hence in freezing protocols, for instance, removal of seminal plasma (washing) yields varying results. This work was designed to study this problem in Canary goats: semen from six males was collected in spring, autumn or winter, washed or non-washed, diluted in a freezing extender with 1.5, 6 or 12% egg yolk, frozen, and thawed after 2 days, 2 or 6 months of cryopreservation. The effect of egg yolk concentration in the freezing extender was far more important than the effect of washing or season on sperm cryosurvival. The quality of frozen-thawed semen tended to improve as egg yolk concentration increased regardless of the effects of season, washing or period of cryopreservation. Washing produced a positive effect on frozen-thawed semen collected during spring or autumn, but the difference decreased as the concentration of yolk increased. However, washing produced a negative effect on frozen-thawed semen collected during winter, diluted with either 6 or 12% egg yolk. There was no apparent seasonal effect on gross measures of sperm production but the seasonal effect was ever present and was reinforced by freezing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess a comprehensive smoking prevention and treatment program in an electrical appliances company with 1600 employees. MATERIAL AND METHODS The program included smoking restrictions with the designation of smoking areas and the offer of smoking cessation treatment for the smokers affected. Study variables were age, sex, nicotine dependence (Fagerström Test), carbon monoxide in expired air, adherence to therapy, and smoking abstinence at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months (end of treatment), and 6 months. Successful smoking abstinence was defined as continuous abstinence from the beginning of treatment. RESULTS Smoking prevalence was 34.8% and 19.5% of smokers requested treatment (77.4% men and 22.6% women). Mean (SD) age was 41.3 (10.3) years. Mean score of nicotine dependence was 5.3 (2.6) and the mean quantity of carbon monoxide in expired air was 35.6 (23.7) ppm. Adherence to therapy was good in 80% of patients. Rate of abstinence was 57.5% at 6 months, signifying a 4% reduction in prevalence. CONCLUSIONS Workplace smoking cessation programs reduce prevalence and facilitate the establishment of smoking restrictions at the worksite. Companies are convenient settings for the implementation of programs aimed at smoking prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Human hearing differs from that of chimpanzees and most other anthropoids in maintaining a relatively high sensitivity from 2 kHz up to 4 kHz, a region that contains relevant acoustic information in spoken language. Knowledge of the auditory capacities in human fossil ancestors could greatly enhance the understanding of when this human pattern emerged during the course of our evolutionary history. Here we use a comprehensive physical model to analyze the influence of skeletal structures on the acoustic filtering of the outer and middle ears in five fossil human specimens from the Middle Pleistocene site of the Sima de los Huesos in the Sierra de Atapuerca of Spain. Our results show that the skeletal anatomy in these hominids is compatible with a human-like pattern of sound power transmission through the outer and middle ear at frequencies up to 5 kHz, suggesting that they already had auditory capacities similar to those of living humans in this frequency range.

Abstract
Beginning in the middle of the 1980s, the Gulf of California ecoregion experienced a boom in shrimp aquaculture and became the second largest producer in the western hemisphere. The moderated, but continual development of shrimp farming, in conjunction with municipal and agriculture effluents has been accompanied by concern about: (a) depletion of fishing stocks, (b) reduction of mangrove forest, (c) frequent harmful algal blooms in coastal waters and shrimp ponds, and (d) water quality deterioration. We demonstrate that environmental degradation resulted from a conjunction of factors including agriculture, untreated municipal effluents, shrimp aquaculture, increasing number of fishermen, and an absence of an effective regulatory program. We recommend the immediate implementation of an integrated coastal management program to protect the integrity of the coastal ecosystems and operate upon the principle of environmental sustainability for the different economic activities including shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
The effects of bilateral vasectomy on the seminal characteristics were assessed in six bucks of the Canarian breed. In addition, we tried to establish the effects of vasectomy on the plasmatic concentrations of testosterone and the libido of the bucks. Semen samples were collected once a week from 8 weeks before to 16 weeks after vasectomy; blood samples were collected prior to vasectomy, and then at once and 1 week after vasectomy and every 2 weeks from the week 4 to the end of the experiment. One week after the vasectomy, ejaculated spermatozoa were non-motile and the percentage of live spermatozoa was below 5% in all vasectomized males; in addition, the total number of cells/ejaculate was 3100 x 106 and 30 x 106 spermatozoa in the control and vasectomized males, respectively. Our results suggest that the vasectomized males may be used as oestrus detectors, without risks of accidental fecundating, only 1 week after vasectomy. Before vasectomy, no significant differences were observed in plasma levels of testosterone between the vasectomized and control males (5.4 +/- 1.2 and 3.9 +/- 1.4 ng/ml, respectively); from 4 to 12 weeks after vasectomy, a marked decrease in the testosterone concentration in all males (vasectomized and control bucks) was observed. From 12 weeks after vasectomy until the end of the experiment, four of the vasectomized males and the control males recovered their normal libido. The results suggest that vasectomy did not exert a remarkable effect on the steroidogenic functionality of the testicle.

Abstract
A series of experiments was carried out to validate a -150 degree C ultra-low temperature freezer for its possible use to properly freeze and store semen. In the first part, crude sample handling was simulated to see whether temperature of stored samples was maintained within a safe range; also, the freezing point and latent heat of fusion plateau of a semen extender were monitored. In the second part, buck semen was (i) frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored in the ultra-low freezer, (ii) frozen and stored in the ultra-low freezer, and (iii) frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen, to compare sperm cryosurvival between freezing methods. Both, frequent removal of samples and long opening of the freezer door did not negatively affect stored sample temperature; latent heat of fusion plateau was 5 minutes long. Semen stored either at -150 degree C or at -196 degree C cryosurvived similarly after 2 days and after 2 months of cryopreservation.

Abstract
In ruminants, glycoproteins synthesized in the outer layers of the trophoblast enter the maternal bloodstream. The assay of their concentration in plasma or in serum can be used for pregnancy diagnosis and to indicate feto-placental health status. In this study, concentrations of the pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) were investigated in the milk of dairy goats. The mean concentrations of PAG in milk were significantly higher in pregnant than in non-pregnant goats throughout the sampling period. Positive milk PAG levels were found in all pregnant animals from Day 32 after breeding, but remained at negative values in nonpregnant ones. This study reports for the first time a pregnancy diagnosis based on milk concentrations of PAG, that could be of great use on the farm.

Abstract
Ovaries of unilaterally ovulated goats (n=21) were used to study follicular morphological features (proportion and degree of atresia, oestradiol production in vitro and progesterone production of granulosa cells in culture). Follicles were dissected out and classified as small (1-2 mm), medium (2-4 mm) and large (>4 mm). Morphological and physiological features were compared in each size class between ovaries bearing and not bearing corpora lutea (CLO and NCLO, respectively). Within the same size class, there was no difference in proportion or in degree of atresia, between CLO and NCLO. A significant effect of follicular size on oestradiol production in vitro was detected, but no effect of the corpus luteum was found. Finally, progesterone production of granulosa cells in culture was significantly higher in CLO than in NCLO after 24 h (p < 0.05) and also after 90 h (p < 0.01) of culture. This higher progesterone production by CLO granulosa cells in culture could be explained by local influence of the corpus luteum stimulating the steroidogenic activity but not aromatase activity. Further studies are needed to clarify possible factors and pathways for this local effect of the corpus luteum upon follicular physiology.

Abstract
FUNDAMENTALS Continuous treatment with calcitonin (CT) has caused an increase of bone mineral density for the first 18 months, followed by a partial decrease of it. In order to obtain a better result in a two year follow-up, it is proposed a schedule treatment during 50% to 66% of the time in recent postmenopausal women. METHODS Pilot, double-blind, randomised, two years follow-up study. 60 women with osteopenia less than 5 years from menopause received 40 U of intranasal elcatonin (ELC) or placebo (PL) 2 months ON, one month OFF. Compliance, safety, pain and the degree of incapacity were evaluated at baseline and every 3 months. At the start and every six months lumbar and femoral BMD were assessed with DXA. RESULTS 41 patients completed the study (21 ELC and 20 PL). There were no basal differences. The treatment was actually used during 59% of the follow-up time in the ELC group and during 58% of the time in the PL group. Basal T-scores were -2.29 SD in the PL group and -2.42 SD in the ELC group. Bone densitometry showed an increase of BMD in the group of patients treated with ELC up to 18 months (lumbar and femoral) but a loss in those patients that received PL. CONCLUSION 40 U of nasal elcatonin for more than 50% of the observation time prevents in the long-term (2 years) the progressive loss of bone mineral density in recent postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Anatomical, behavioral, histological, endocrinological, and cytogenetic characteristics were determined in a horned intersex goat. Histology of the gonads confirmed that the goat was a true hermaphrodite. Cytogenetic analysis showed that it was a chimera (60XX/60XY). Use of laparoscopy allowed determination of characteristics of the internal gonads.

Abstract
Nodular fasciitis is an unusual benign proliferative fibroblastic lesion. It rarely presents in the oral cavity. A review of the world literature revealed only 11 other published cases. We had a case of nodular fasciitis of the oral mucosa in a 27-year-old woman. She noticed a rapidly growing painless nodule. The nodule was successfully eradicated with a single excision. After a year there has been no recurrence. Although the condition is clinically and histologically benign, it may mimic malignancy. It should be taken into account to avoid mutilating surgery.

Abstract
Cranial discrete traits may be regarded as markers of dynamic responses to general and local perturbations of the morphogenetic pattern, particularly when they are viewed and examined in terms of hypostosis vs. hyperostosis. There are indications, in fact, that the variation between these two opposite conditions relates to mechanical stress suffered by the bony structures during early stages of growth and development. In a previous comparison between Neanderthals and modern humans, variable degrees and contrasting distribution patterns of hypostosis were found [Manzi et al. (1996), JHE30: 511-527]. In the present paper, the occurrence, expression and cranial distribution of 20 hypo-hyperostotic traits are examined in the Middle Pleistocene sample from Atapuerca - Sima de los Huesos (Spain), with the principal aim being to test whether or not the degree of cranial hypostosis increases during the evolution of the Neanderthals. Other Middle Pleistocene representatives of the genus Homo (Kabwe and Petralona), the Italian Neanderthals, and a large recent European sample are also considered. A general consistency between the gradual appearance and stabilization of the Neanderthal cranial features and the results of the present analysis is found and is interpreted as an indication that hypostosis does mark the occurrence of "ontogenetic stress". As suggested more than half a century ago by S. Sergi, an increase in "ontogenetic stress" in the Neanderthal lineage could result from the relationship between intracranial pressures and other (heterochronic) effects produced by the growth of a large brain (encephalization) and the ossification of an archaic (platycephalic) cranial vault.

Abstract
In this article we study the cranial remains of the late Lower Pleistocene human fossils from Gran Dolina (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain), assigned to the new species Homo antecessor. The cranial remains belong to at least five individuals, both juveniles and adults. The most outstanding feature is the totally modern human morphology of the very complete face ATD6-69, representing the earliest occurrence of the modern face in the fossil record. The Gran Dolina fossils show in the face a suite of modern human apomorphies not found in earlier hominids nor in contemporary or earlier Homo erectus fossils. There are also traits in the Gran Dolina fossils shared with both Neandertals and modern humans, which reinforce the hypothesis that Neandertals and modern humans form a clade, and that the Gran Dolina fossils are a common ancestor to both lineages.
