Abstract
Abstract. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) mixed in the whole milk on the growth and health of calves. Forty Holstein calves (20 male, 20 female) were randomly assigned, within sex, to one of two groups at 5 d of age. Calves were fed fresh, warm whole milk (control) or fresh, warm whole milk supplemented with MOS (4 g of Bio-Mos per calf daily at a.m. feeding). Calves were fed 4 L of whole milk per day in two equal feedings for 6 weeks. Pelleted calf starter and fresh water were available ad libitum during the experiment. No hay was fed. Body weights (BW) were measured at the beginning of the experiment and then weekly till the end of the experiment. Height at withers, heart girth, withers to pins, and point of shoulder to pins were measured at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. Fecal fluidity scores and respiratory condition were monitored daily. Intake of whole milk was similar between the groups (P>0.10). Although there was no significant difference in starter intakes (P>0.10), calves in MOS treatment consumed 19.9 % more calf starter than calves in control diet (499.2 vs. 416.5 g/d) for 26 to 46 d of age. BW gains for various age periods were unaffected by treatment (P>0.10). However, calves in MOS treatment gained 11.2 % more BW than calves in control diet (627.4 vs. 564.2 g/d) from 26 to 46 d of age. Skeletal growth and feed efficiencies were similar for calves in both groups. No respiratory problems in calves in both groups occurred during the experiment. Fecal fluidity scores, percent calf days with scours and percent calf days treated for scours were unaffected by treatment (P>0.10). However, calf scours was a common problem especially during the first 3 weeks of the experiment. The reason for this may have been that calf scours had been a common problem at the location of the experiment for many years. This suggests that there must have been a significant enteric challenge for calves at this location. Even under these stressful conditions, MOS in whole milk did not elicit an improvement in enteric health in the circumstances of this location. Although there were no significant differences between the groups, the results suggest that starter intake and consequently BW gain from 26 to 46 d of age tended to be improved in calves in MOS group compared with calves in control group.

Abstract
AIM To determine the possible residual antibacterial effects and possible surface changes caused by 5.25% NaOCl, 2.5% NaOCl, 2% CHX and 0.05% Octenisept on in vitro gutta-percha points after different disinfection protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 121 standard # 40, 0.2% gutta-percha cones were cut 10 mm from the tip, sterilized with ethylene oxide. The samples were divided into five groups, and each group was divided into three subgroups according to immersion periods of gutta-percha cones into solutions. One gutta-percha cone from each group was selected for SEM evaluation. RESULTS All of the tested solutions were effective on the selected microorganisms when compared with the control solution. No surface alterations were detected on the gutta-percha cones. CONCLUSION In the limits of this study, immersion of gutta-percha into 2% CHX for one minute was found the most effective method to eliminate the selected microorganisms. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Although gutta-percha points are aseptic in their package, once opened and used, gutta-percha cones may be contaminated. In order to eliminate bacteria and not to cause surface changes on gutta-percha cones, disinfection solution must be selected carefully.

Abstract
A 50-year-old man presented to the out-patient clinic because of a sudden pain in his left eye just after lumbal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was started. Biomicroscopic examination of the left eye revealed the inferior anterior chamber angle including a foreign body and the superior anterior chamber angle including the iris portion, into which the foreign body had been stuck prior to the MRI examination. His history revealed an accidental penetrating eye trauma of the shotgun pellet of 28 years ago. The foreign body was easily removed using a forceps intraoperatively. The foreign body was defined as a metallic foreign body postoperatively.

Abstract
Introduction The most widely used protocol for the induction of experimental allergic airway inflammation in mice involves sensitization by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of the antigen ovalbumin (OVA) used in conjunction with the adjuvant aluminium hydroxide (alum). Although adjuvants are frequently used, there are questions regarding the necessity of alum for murine asthma studies due to the non-physiological nature of this chemical. Objective The objective of this study was to compare experimental asthma phenotypes between adjuvant and adjuvant-free protocols of murine allergic airway inflammation in an attempt to develop a standardized alternative to adjuvant use. Method An adjuvant-free OVA model of experimental asthma was investigated in BALB/c mice using i.p. or subcutaneous (s.c.) sensitization routes. For the s.c. sensitization, β-galactosidase (β-gal) was also tested as an antigen. In addition, OVA adjuvant and adjuvant-free sensitization protocols were compared in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. Open-field testing was performed to assess the effect of alum on mouse behaviour. Results Comparison of adjuvant vs. adjuvant-free and i.p. vs. s.c. protocols revealed that both adjuvant use and route of antigen application significantly influenced OVA-specific antibody production. Comparison of adjuvant and adjuvant-free protocols in this study clearly demonstrated the non-requirement of alum for the induction of acute allergic airway inflammation, as both protocols induce a similar disease phenotype. BALB/c mice were significantly more susceptible than C57BL/6 mice to sensitization. Using the improved s.c. adjuvant-free protocol, it was demonstrated that alternative antigens such as β-gal can also be utilized. Behavioural studies indicated severe distress in mice treated with alum. Conclusion The OVA s.c. adjuvant-free protocol used in this study generates a phenotype comparable to the benchmark adjuvant protocol widely used in the literature. The adjuvant-free alternative avoids the added complication of non-physiological adjuvants that may interfere with asthma treatment or prevention strategies.

Abstract
We evaluated the risk factors for pterygium development in Eastern Turkey. Mean protrusion value of all eyes with pterygium (all eyes in bilateral pterygium subgroups and only eyes with pterygium in unilateral pterygium subgroup, n = 130) was 16.76 +/- 2.69 mm. In all cases pterygium occurred in the eye that had greater protrusion value suggesting greater protrusion degree might be a risk factor.

Abstract
Intraoperative subtenon 2% lidocaine and topical 0.5% proparacaine in patients undergoing strabismus surgery were compared. No additional systemic analgesics and sedatives were used. Mean and total pain scores intraoperatively and postoperatively were not different. Each anesthetic agent provides good intraoperative anesthesia and postoperative analgesia. Topical 0.5% proparacaine may be preferred because of its easy administration and fewer side effects, lack of hospital admission, and immediate and predictable alignment of the eyes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A double-masked, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of topical 2% cyclosporine A in preservative-free artificial tears for patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis. METHODS Twenty patients with severe vernal keratoconjunctivitis were included in the study. All were treated with topical 2% cyclosporine A eye drops. One eye of each patient was administered 2% cyclosporine A in preservative-free artificial tears; the fellow eye received the placebo (vehicle) for the first 2 weeks, in a double-masked, placebo-controlled trial. Thereafter, the placebo eye received cyclosporine A (open trial). Symptoms and signs were scored on the day of enrollment and at the end of week 2, 4, and 14. RESULTS At the end of week 2, no statistically significant decrease was noted from baseline in mean scores of either signs (p = 0.18) or symptoms (p = 0.50) in the eyes that received placebo. On the other hand, a statistically significant decrease was observed in both sign and symptom scores (p < 0.001, for both) of eyes that received cyclosporine A. Significant differences were also noted at 2 weeks in mean scores of both signs and symptoms (p < 0.001, for both) between the eyes that received cyclosporine A and those that received placebo. At week 4 and 14, statistically significant decreases in both sign scores and symptom scores were noted compared with baseline in the eyes that received cyclosporine A and in the eyes that had initially received placebo (p < 0.001, for all). INTERPRETATION Topical 2% cyclosporine A in preservative-free artificial tears is effective in alleviating signs and symptoms of patients with severe vernal keratoconjunctivitis and had no observed side effects over the course of the study.

Abstract
This study was performed to determine the status of measles immunization and the effect of several sociodemographic factors on immunization in children aged between 10 months and 6 years. Using cluster sampling, 663 healthy children were selected at random from three provinces in Eastern Turkey. The immunization histories of these children were obtained from their immunization cards. With respect to their vaccination status, children were categorized as vaccinated, unvaccinated or unknown. If the child had no immunization card, he or she was classified as unknown. Of these children, 81.6% were vaccinated and 15.1% were unvaccinated. The vaccination status was not known in 3.3% of the children. In children aged 10-12 months, the vaccination rate was 68.6%. For age groups of 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 and 5-6 years, the vaccination rates were 84.2, 82.2, 85.3, 82.1 and 76.8%, respectively, but these differences were not significant. The vaccination rates increased in parallel with maternal education level (P = 0.009). Also, vaccination rates were significantly correlated with settlement area (P = 0.036), and were higher in urban regions than suburban and rural regions. There was no difference in vaccination rates with respect to gender, paternal education level, number of siblings and socio-economic status. The results of this study show that the level of immunization necessary for measles elimination has not yet been reached in Eastern Turkey. Priority should be given to increase the immunization levels to 90-95% among children.

Abstract
In this study, 100 gall bladder samples of sheep slaughtered at an abattoir in Elaziğ province were examined for Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Preston Campylobacter Agar supplemented with 7% horse blood and Preston Selective Supplement (Oxoid, Hampshire, UK) were used for isolation of the agents. Campylobacter spp. were isolated in 66 samples, and they were identified as 34% C. jejuni and 32% C. coli. A multiplex PCR based upon the use of ceuE gene-specific primers was applied on DNA samples extracted from C. jejuni and C. coli isolates. All C. jejuni and C. coli strains that were positive by culture were also detected to be positive by PCR. This study shows that PCR can be used an alternative, rapid and sensitive test for the identification of C. jejuni and C. coli which threaten human and animal health.

Abstract
Abetalipoproteinemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by steatorrhea, poor weight gain, acanthocytosis and retinitis pigmentosa. Here we peresent a six-month-old patient with abetaliporoteinemia. He had a history of chronic diarrhea from the first month of life. He was cachectic and his motor development was delayed. Microscopic examination of the stool revealed fat. Mild anemia with reticulocytosis, acanthocytosis, low triglyceride, low cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, and apolipoprotein A and B were detected. Ophthalmological examination was normal. Peroral jejunal capsule biopsy revealed normal villi and significant lipid deposition in the cytoplasm of affected cells. The patient was given large doses of vitamins E and A.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) and penicillin therapy in a murine model of group A streptococcal myositis. The thighs of mice were inoculated with Streptococcus pyogenes. Four groups were evaluated: 1) control (n = 13), 2) HBO2 treatment (n = 15), 3) penicillin treatment (n = 12), and 4) penicillin and HBO2 treatment (n = 13). Histologic methods were utilized to prove the existence of myositis and histologic changes in tissues following experimental intramuscular inoculation of mice with Streptococcus pyogenes. Mortality (day of death) and the number of colony forming units (cfu) were measured. Microscopic sections of the left thighs revealed extensive necrosis of muscle with acute inflammatory infiltrate in all groups. Penicillin significantly lowered cfu count in comparison to the control (P < 0.01). Cfu's in group 4 were significantly lower than in group 3 (P < 0.01). Survival was significantly longer in the penicillin group compared to the control (P < 0.01). Survival in the combined treatment group was significantly longer than penicillin alone (P < 0.01). These results suggest that 1) HBO2 treatment alone does not decrease mortality significantly in vivo, 2) penicillin therapy alone improves outcome significantly, and 3) the combined treatment of penicillin and HBO2 exerts synergistic effects in both decreasing bacterial counts in vivo and increasing survival in this model.

Abstract
The title compound, C(45)H(55)NO(6)P(2), consists of an acyclic P=N-P(O) monophosphazene chain and five bulky 2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy side groups which predominantly determine the molecular shape. Although the P-N single [1.586 (3) A] and P=N double [1.517 (3) A] bonds are significantly different from each other, both are substantially shorter than the ideal P-N single bond. The P-N-P angle [146.0 (2) degrees ] corresponds to the upper limit reported for acyclic phosphazene derivatives in the literature.

Abstract
Although active fixation ventricular leads seem to have advantages over passive fixation leads, this study compares the follow-up results of active and passive fixation leads in children. We evaluated the implantation and follow-up data of 41 children with active (Accufix II DEC, group 1) (n = 20) or passive (Membrane E, group 2) (n = 21) fixation, steroid-eluting ventricular leads. All but one of the patients in group 1 completed the 12-month follow-up. The mean follow-up period in group 2 was 10.4 +/- 2.9 months (range 3-12 months, median 12 months). In both groups the mean pacing threshold was measured as 0.51 +/- 0.09 V versus 0.48 +/- 0.15 V (P > 0.05) at 0.5-ms pulse width, mean R wave amplitude as 9.9 +/- 2.5 mV versus 9.4 +/- 3.2 mV (P > 0.05), and mean impedance as 557 +/- 92 omega versus 664 +/- 160 omega (P < 0.05), respectively, at implantation. After the first week of pacing, mean threshold values in group 1 were significantly lower than those of group 2 (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). During the follow-up period, lead impedance measurements did not show a significant difference between the two groups. In one patient from group 1, the lead (by unscrewing) was removed easily because of pacemaker pocket infection. No lead dislodgement or helix deformation occurred in group 1. Nevertheless, in one patient from group 2, the lead was extracted at 4-month postimplantation because of lead displacement. We conclude that the steroid-eluting active fixation lead (Accufix II DEC) have advantages of easier implantation and lower acute and chronic stimulation thresholds compared to the passive fixation lead (Membrane E). Therefore, Accufix II DEC is superior to Membrane E, and it is a better first choice in children with an implanted single chamber ventricular pacemaker.

Abstract
Complete absence of tricuspid valve tissue and apparatus with a normal orifice between the right atrium and the right ventricle is defined as "unguarded tricuspid orifice". Very few case report of this anomaly have appeared in the literature. In this article, we present five cases of unguarded tricuspid orifice, isolated or in combination with other anomalies. All patients were males, aged six days to five years; only one case is alive at present. In our opinion, this anomaly is not so infrequent as it is believed to be, and the diagnosis can be made easily with echocardiography if it is kept in mind.

Abstract
The therapeutic effect of corticosteroids in acute idiopathic peripheral nerve paralysis (Bell's palsy) in children is controversial. The authors evaluated the effect of steroids on the early and late outcome of children with Bell's palsy in a prospective randomized controlled setting. Forty-two patients (21 females, 21 males) with complete paralysis were enrolled in the study. Group 1 (n = 21) received methylprednisolone (1 mg/kg daily for 10 days orally); Group 2 (n = 21) did not. All patients were observed in the first 3 days of the disease and at 4, 6, and 12 months of follow-up. The mean age of Group 1 was 52.4 +/- 4.3 months, not significantly different from that of Group 2. In Group 1, 86% and 100% exhibited normal nerve function at 4 and 6 months of follow-up, respectively; in Group 2, 72% and 86% demonstrated complete recovery at 4 and 6 months, respectively, with improvement in all patients by 12 months. The improvement rates between the treated and untreated groups did not differ significantly. No side effects necessitated steroid withdrawal. The results of this study indicate that steroid therapy initiated at an early stage of childhood Bell's palsy does not significantly improve the outcome.

Abstract
To identify streptococcal genes that are expressed during experimental endocarditis, we developed a promoter-less dual reporter gene-fusion (amy, cat) plasmid, pAK36. Chromosomal DNA from S. gordonii V288 was digested with Sau3A1. The resulting fragments were ligated into pAK36. Following transformation into S. gordonii, the library of random gene fusion clones was inoculated into a rabbit to induce experimental endocarditis. Chloramphenicol treatment effected positive selection. Upon euthanization of the rabbits, the valvular vegetations were excised in a sterile field. Surviving clones were isolated and screened in vitro for chloramphenicol sensitivity and negative amylase activity. From the 48 randomly picked, double-negative clones, DNA was isolated and analyzed by Southern hybridization with labeled pAK36 probe. Different insertion patterns were identified, suggesting that no fewer than 13 S. gordonii genes were induced. Therefore, S. gordonii genes are induced during experimental endocarditis, which may contribute to virulence.

Abstract
In order to investigate the pathophysiology of the tethered cord syndrome, a few experimental models have been developed and used previously. In this study, the authors present a new experimental model to investigate the biochemical, electrophysiological, and histopathological changes in the tethered spinal cord syndrome. A model was produced in guinea pigs using an application of cyanoacrylate to fixate the filum terminale and the surrounding tissue to the dorsal aspect of the sacrum following 5-gram stretching of the spinal cord. The experiments were performed on 40 animals divided into two groups. The responses to tethering were evaluated with hypoxanthine and lipid peroxidation, somatosensory and motor evoked potentials, and transmission electron microscope examination. The hypoxanthine and lipid peroxidation levels significantly increased, indicating an ischemic injury (p < 0.01). The average hypoxanthine level in the control group was 478.8 +/- 68.8 nmol/g wet tissue, while it was 651.2 +/- 71.5 nmol/g in the tethered cord group. The lipid peroxidation level in group I was 64.0 +/- 5.7 nmol/g wet tissue, whereas it was 84.0 +/- 4.7 nmol/g in group II. In the tethered cord group, the latencies of the somatosensory and motor evoked potentials significantly increased, and the amplitudes decreased. These changes indicated a defective conduction in the motor and sensorial nerve fibers. In the transmission electron microscopic examinations, besides the reversible changes like edema and destruction in the gray-white matter junction, irreversible changes like scarcity of neurofilaments and destruction in axons and damage in myelin sheaths were observed. We consider that this work can be used as an experimental model for tethered cord syndrome.
