Abstract
Introduction Postoperative dysphonia is mostly caused by vocal fold scarring, and careful management of vocal fold surgery has been reported to reduce the risk of scar formation. However, depending on the vocal fold injury, treatment of postoperative dysphonia can be challenging. Objective The goal of the current study was to develop a novel prophylactic regenerative approach for the treatment of injured vocal folds after surgery, using biodegradable gelatin hydrogel microspheres as a drug delivery system for basic fibroblast growth factor. Methods Videoendoscopic laryngeal surgery was performed to create vocal fold injury in 14 rabbits. Immediately following this procedure, biodegradable gelatin hydrogel microspheres with basic fibroblast growth factor were injected in the vocal fold. Two weeks after injection, larynges were excised for evaluation of vocal fold histology and mucosal movement. Results The presence of poor vibratory function was confirmed in the injured vocal folds. Histology and digital image analysis demonstrated that the injured vocal folds injected with gelatin hydrogel microspheres with basic fibroblast growth factor showed less scar formation, compared to the injured vocal folds injected with gelatin hydrogel microspheres only, or those without any injection. Conclusion A prophylactic injection of basic fibroblast growth factor -containing biodegradable gelatin hydrogel microspheres demonstrates a regenerative potential for injured vocal folds in a rabbit model.

Abstract
For liquid rubidium the Stokes-Einstein (SE) relation is well fulfilled near the melting point with an effective hydrodynamic diameter, which agrees well with a value from structural investigations. A wealth of thermodynamic and microscopic data exists for a wide range of temperatures for liquid rubidium and hence it represents a good test bed to challenge the SE relation with rising temperature from an experimental point of view. We performed classical molecular dynamics simulations to complement the existing experimental data using a pseudopotential, which describes perfectly the structure and dynamics of liquid rubidium. The derived SE relation from combining experimental shear viscosity data with simulated diffusion coefficients reveals a weak violation at about 1.3T_{melting}≈400 K. The microscopic relaxation dynamics on nearest neighbor distances from neutron spectroscopy demonstrate distinct changes in the amplitude with rising temperature. The derived average relaxation time for density fluctuations on this length scale shows a non-Arrhenius behavior, with a slope change around 1.5T_{melting}≈450 K. Combining the simulated macroscopic self-diffusion coefficient with that microscopic average relaxation time, a distinct violation of the SE relation in the same temperature range can be demonstrated. One can conclude that the changes in the collective dynamics, a mirror of the correlated movements of the particles, are at the origin for the violation of the SE relation. The changes in the dynamics can be understood as a transition from a more viscous liquid metal to a more fluid-like liquid above the crossover temperature range of 1.3-1.5 T_{melting}. The decay of the amplitude of density fluctuations in liquid aluminium, lead, and rubidium demonstrates a remarkable agreement and points to a universal thermal crossover in the dynamics of liquid metals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the accuracy of cone beam CT (CBCT) to diagnose non-invasive chronic fungal rhinosinusitis. METHODS Preoperative CT evaluation of non-invasive chronic fungal rhinosinusitis was performed by CBCT (3D Accuitomo 170®) and traditional multidetector CT (MDCT) (Aquilion 32®) in 13 and 38 patients with non-invasive chronic fungal maxillary sinusitis, respectively, in different facilities. Detection of intrasinus calcification was compared between these two groups. RESULTS Detection of intrasinus calcification in patients with non-invasive chronic fungal maxillary sinusitis was higher in the MDCT group (84.2%) than the CBCT group (46.2%). CONCLUSION CBCT is inferior to MDCT in detection of intrasinus calcification in patients with non-invasive chronic fungal maxillary sinusitis. CBCT is frequently used in the screening of the paranasal lesion, but it is not enough to evaluate non-invasive chronic fungal maxillary sinusitis alone. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective study.

Abstract
Tracheal epithelial cells maintain airway homeostasis by mediating mucociliary clearance. Following tracheal reconstruction, timely epithelial regeneration is required to prevent respiratory compromise and infectious diseases. To achieve rapid tracheal epithelial regeneration, a heparin cross-linked collagen sponge containing fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) was prepared as a graft for tracheal reconstruction. The heparin cross-linked sponge exhibited a high FGF-2 retaining capacity, and tracheal epithelial and mesenchymal cells cultured in this sponge containing FGF-2 showed high proliferative capacities. Subsequently, heparin-free collagen sponge scaffolds (C/F scaffold) and collagen sponge scaffolds cross-linked with 10 μg/ml heparin retained FGF-2 (C/H10/F scaffold), and were transplanted into rats with tracheal defects. Invasion of both epithelial and non-epithelial cells was greater in rats treated with the C/H10/F scaffold at 1 week post-transplantation than in rats treated with the C/F scaffold. Moreover, at 2 weeks after transplantation, improved cilia formation was observed in the C/H10/F scaffold group, with higher motility and more potent posterior-anterior flow generation than in the C/F scaffold group. These results suggest that heparin improves functional regeneration of tracheal epithelium. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
Vocal nodules are generally caused by vocal abuse, and conservative treatments such as voice therapy have been advocated as a first-choice treatment for vocal nodules. Reports of vocal fold lesions related to autoimmune diseases, such as bamboo nodules, are rare in the literature. Here we report a very rare case of bamboo nodules in a 30-year-old woman treated by steroid injection into the vocal folds by videoendoscopic laryngeal surgery in an outpatient setting. She was successfully treated without further recurrence. This report indicates that a steroid injection into bamboo nodules might be a useful treatment option, especially in patients who have not shown any improvement after conservative treatments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS In order to make possible organ preservation, since 2007 our hospital has performed induction chemotherapy (ICT) with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (PF) for hypopharyngeal cancer as chemoselection, followed by alternating chemoradiotherapy (ACRT) with docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil in (TPF) good responders and curative surgery was used in poor responders. METHODS Twenty-six patients with stage III to stage IVB hypopharyngeal cancer received ICT. Eleven of the patients were classified as poor responders and received curative surgery. The remaining 15 patients were classified as good responders. Three of these patients underwent curative surgery, and the remaining 12 underwent ACRT. RESULTS The primary lesions in the 12 ACRT patients responded completely to treatment without severe late toxicities. The estimated 3-year laryngectomy-free rate for all 26 patients was 23%. The estimated 3-year overall survival rates for all 26 patients, 12 patients treated with ACRT, and 14 patients who underwent curative surgery, were 79%, 75%, and 84%, respectively. CONCLUSION The patients who underwent ACRT showed no significant difference in overall survival compared with the patients who underwent curative surgery. All the patients were able to proceed with this series of therapy, indicating that ICT with PF could be a feasible tool for choosing good responders. Because ACRT with TPF had a high response rate and fewer severe toxicities, this treatment could be safe and have enough impact to control hypopharyngeal cancer in good responders. Abstract
BACKGROUND Congenital infection with human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is known to be a causative agent of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). OBJECTIVES To clarify the nongenetic etiology of SNHL by identifying the Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-infected region in the cochleae. STUDY DESIGN We established an animal model of SNHL by injecting neonatal Balb/c mice with intracerebral murine Cytomegalovirus (MCMV) within 24h after delivery. RESULTS At 3 weeks of age, unilateral and bilateral SNHL were observed in 24% (5/21) and 29% (6/21) of the mice, respectively. SNHL thereafter progressed, with 79% of mice developing bilateral SNHL by 6 weeks of age. MCMV antigens and DNA were detected in the spiral ganglion, and cells surrounding the meninges and scala tympani at 1 week of age. However, both MCMV antigens and DNA had completely disappeared by 2 weeks of age. It is possible that the MCMV reached the spiral ganglion via cerebrospinal fluid as the result of meningitis, as the stria vascularis was found to be MCMV antigen negative. Myosin VI expression in the outer hair cells was lost at 3 weeks of age. MCMV and myosin VI expression disappeared before and during SNHL progression, respectively. CONCLUSIONS There was a definite lag time between the period in which MCMV antigens/DNA-positive cells were observed and that in which SNHL developed and myosin VI-negative hair cells were observed. Further study is needed to explore the role of MCMV in the loss of myosin VI expression in the outer hair cells.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological disorder that is accompanied by inflammation and oxidative stress. Atherosclerosis has a long subclinical progression in arteries of children and young adults decades before overt clinical manifestations of the disease. In this study, we determined arterial stiffness by measuring brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) in women with endometriosis to assess the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis. We also measured markers of inflammation and oxidative stress in women with endometriosis. baPWV in women with endometriosis aged over 30 years was significantly higher than that in women without endometriosis aged over 30 years (p < 0.05), but not in women aged less than 30. Serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level in women with endometriosis was significantly higher than that in controls (p < 0.05). Young women with endometriosis show significantly increased arterial stiffness, suggesting that women with endometriosis need to be cautious of the future onset of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Parotid lymphangioma is a relatively rare disease that is usually detected in infancy or early childhood, and which has typical features. Clinical reports of facial nerve paralysis caused by lymphangioma, however, are very rare. Usually, facial nerve paralysis in a child suggests malignancy. Here we report a very rare case of parotid lymphangioma associated with facial nerve paralysis. A 7-year-old boy was admitted to hospital with a rapidly enlarging mass in the left parotid region. Left peripheral-type facial nerve paralysis was also noted. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging also revealed multiple cystic lesions. Open biopsy was undertaken in order to investigate the cause of the facial nerve paralysis. The histopathological findings of the excised tumor were consistent with lymphangioma. Prednisone (40 mg/day) was given in a tapering dose schedule. Facial nerve paralysis was completely cured 1 month after treatment. There has been no recurrent facial nerve paralysis for eight years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE High-molecular weight (HMW) isoform level and HMW ratio have been shown to be better predictors of insulin sensitivity and metabolic syndrome than total adiponectin level.We examined the changes in circulating levels of HMW adiponectin and ratios of HMW to total adiponectin in women during the menopausal transition. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study in 217 healthy women and divided them into 4 stages: 58 women in pre-menopausal, 69 women in perimenopausal, 62 women in early post-menopausal and 28 women in late post-menopausal phase. Serum levels of total adiponectin and HMW adiponectin were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS In late post-menopausal women, HMW adiponectin level was significantly higher than that in peri-menopausal women and the HMW to total adiponectin ratio was significantly lower than that in early post-menopausal women. In peri-menopausal women, HMW adiponectin level was significantly lower than that in pre-menopausal women and HMW to total adiponectin ratio was significantly lower than the ratios in pre-menopausal and early post-menopausal women. CONCLUSION The ratio of HMW to total adiponectin is low in late post-menopausal women, though both levels of total and HMW adiponectin were high after menopause in our cross-sectional study.

Abstract
We evaluated the effectiveness of intraoperative topical application of fluorescein to detect the leakage point of cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)rhinorrhea. Three patients with CSF rhinorrhea were treated with an endoscopic endonasal technique. Ten percent fluorescein was topically used for intraoperative localization of the leak site. A change of the fluorescein color from brown to green due to dilation of CSF were recognized as evidence of CSF rhinorrhea. We repeated the procedure to detect any small defects. All CSF rhinorrheas were successfully repaired by this endoscopic endonasal approach. Topical application of fluorescein is simple and sensitive for identifying intraoperative CSF rhinorrhea.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our group has had good results in tracheal mucosal regeneration using a collagen vitrigel-sponge scaffold in an animal model. In this study, the effectiveness of this scaffold with the application of basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) was investigated. METHODS A collagen vitrigel-sponge scaffold was fabricated with simultaneous addition of b-FGF. Three types of collagen vitrigel-sponge scaffolds were made: no b-FGF, 10 ng of b-FGF, and 100 ng of b-FGF. At 3, 5, 7, and 14 days after implantation in rats, the tracheas were removed and histologically evaluated. The regeneration of mucosal epithelium and the subepithelial layer was evaluated. RESULTS Mucosal epithelium, including pseudostratified epithelium and ciliated cells, regenerated earlier in the scaffolds when b-FGF was applied than when b-FGF was not applied. Regeneration of the subepithelial layer, infiltration of inflammatory cells and fibroblasts, and angiogenesis were promoted earlier in the scaffolds with b-FGF application. CONCLUSIONS Our technique for tracheal reconstruction using collagen vitrigel-sponge scaffolds with b-FGF application affords a feasible approach for accelerating the regeneration of the intraluminal surface and subepithelial layer of tracheal tissue.

Abstract
CONCLUSION Our technique for tracheal regeneration using a collagen vitrigel scaffold affords a feasible approach for accelerating epithelial regeneration on the intraluminal surface of the host tracheal defect. OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of a collagen vitrigel scaffold for the regeneration of the tracheal epithelium. METHODS The collagen vitrigel scaffold was developed by conjugating a collagen vitrigel membrane to a collagen sponge to promote both epithelial cell growth and mesenchymal cell infiltration. The collagen vitrigel scaffold was implanted into tracheal defects in rats as the vitrigel model, and a conventional collagen sponge was implanted as a control model. The structure of the regenerated tissue was observed and thickness of the epithelium was quantitatively evaluated by histological examination. RESULTS Histological findings showed the surface of the collagen vitrigel scaffold to be flat in comparison with that of the conventional collagen sponge. At 7, 14, and 28 days post-implantation, the average thickness of the regenerated epithelial layer in the vitrigel model group was greater than that in the control group.

Abstract
Objective: Multiple laryngeal papillomatosis has a high rate of recurrence after surgery. Narrowband imaging (NBI) is a novel optical enhancement technology used for the diagnosis. This is the first report to date to indicate the availability of the combination of laryngomicro surgery and videoendoscopic surgery for laryngeal papillomatosis using NBI technology. Method: The patients were 34-year-old and 30-year-old men. Both cases underwent surgery in another hospital. However, because of recurrence, they were subsequently referred to our department for further evaluation. Examination in our outpatient clinic revealed papilloma-like mucosal changes, and recurrent multiple laryngeal papillomatosis was diagnosed in both cases. Results: In laryngomicroscopic surgical findings, the presence of papillomas was confirmed by NBI, and the papillomas were removed using an XPS Micro Debrider and a CO2 laser. Using the NBI system, the border between the normal mucosa and the papillomas could be clearly identified, allowing precise resection. Two months later, CO2 laser resection using a laryngeal flexible endoscope under topical anesthesia was undertaken in an outpatient setting for recurring or remaining papilloma lesions. Further treatment on the lesions has been carried out several times to date using NBI. The lesions have now been eradicated without further recurrence. Conclusion: Herein we reported 2 cases of multiple laryngeal papillomatosis that were treated by tumor resection using NBI. Clearer identification of the tumor border was obtained by this technique, thus allowing minimally invasive resection. This paper demonstrates the applicability of the NBI system to the identification and resection of laryngeal papillomatosis.

Abstract
We propose a method by which the generalized transport properties and coefficients at all wavelengths and frequencies can be obtained by inversion of an exact kinetic equation. The necessary data are the density-density, energy-energy, and density-energy time correlation functions, which can be obtained by molecular-dynamics simulation. In addition, also the coupling between viscous stress tensor and energy flux vector can be obtained without approximation. This allows one to check the validity of the Markov assumption in a straightforward way. As a first test case, the theory is applied to liquid argon in two thermodynamic states. For this system, we calculate and discuss generalized thermodynamic (enthalpy, specific heats, and thermal expansion) and transport properties (longitudinal viscosity, thermal conductivity).

Abstract
In the present paper, we extend the method described in paper I [D. Bertolini and A. Tani, preceding paper, Phys. Rev. E 83, 031201 (2011)] to molecular liquids, which allows us to solve the exact kinetic equation proposed by de Schepper et al. [Phys. Rev. A 38, 271 (1988)] without approximations. In particular, generalized thermodynamic properties (enthalpy, specific heat, and thermal expansion coefficient) and transport properties (longitudinal viscosity, thermal conductivity) have been calculated for three liquids of increasing complexity, namely dimethyl sulfoxide, hydrogen fluoride, and SPC/E water. All results have been obtained by the molecular formalism as well as the atomic one, corrected for intramolecular correlations that are due to the models adopted. As done for simple liquids, the coupling between the viscous stress tensor and the energy flux vector has been calculated exactly. We also show that the Markov assumption for the dynamics related to thermal conductivity can only be adopted with caution.

Abstract
A topological derivative is defined, which is caused by kinking of a crack, thus, representing the topological change. Using variational methods, the anti-plane model of a solid subject to a non-penetration condition imposed at the kinked crack is considered. The objective function of the potential energy is expanded with respect to the diminishing branch of the incipient crack. The respective sensitivity analysis is provided by a Saint-Venant principle and a local decomposition of the solution of the variational problem in the Fourier series.

PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of the osmotic pressure of solutions used for reconstituting the ultrasound contrast agent "Levovist" on the degree of video intensity of the enhancement and video intensity decay in contrast echocardiogram, we used 6 solutions with different osmotic pressures in both vitro and in vivo experiments. MATERIALS AND METHODS In the in vitro experiments, Levovist was reconstituted with 6 kinds of solutions with different osmotic pressures (Lactate Ringer's solution, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 20% glucose and distilled water) and peak video intensities and video intensity decay were measured. In the in vivo experiments, contrast echocardiography was performed in 7 adult volunteers, following the intravenous injections of Levovist, previously reconstituted with one of 2 solutions (5% glucose or distilled water). RESULTS In vitro, at peak time, Levovist reconstituted with either Lactate Ringer's solution, 2.5% glucose, 5% glucose, or distilled water had good peak video intensities. At 30 s after peak time, Levovist reconstituted with Lactate Ringer's solution had greater enhancement and less decay than the other 5 solutions (P<0.001). In vivo, at 180 heart beats after peak time, the video intensity decay with 5% glucose was greater than that with distilled water (150+/-13 dB, 123+/-25 dB, respectively, P<0.05). CONCLUSION In this study, among various (2.5-20%) glucose solutions, the stability of the microbubbles differed, depending on the degree of osmotic pressure of the respective solutions; 5% glucose was the best. However, overall, the most suitable solution for reconstituting Levovist, was Lactate Ringer's solution. These findings could lead to effective strategies for better contrast echocardiography using Levovist by changing the current solution of choice to Lactate Ringer's solution or 5% glucose.

Abstract
Exquisitely precise synapse formation is crucial for the mammalian CNS to function correctly. Retinal photoreceptors transfer information to bipolar and horizontal cells at a specialized synapse, the ribbon synapse. We identified pikachurin, an extracellular matrix-like retinal protein, and observed that it localized to the synaptic cleft in the photoreceptor ribbon synapse. Pikachurin null-mutant mice showed improper apposition of the bipolar cell dendritic tips to the photoreceptor ribbon synapses, resulting in alterations in synaptic signal transmission and visual function. Pikachurin colocalized with both dystrophin and dystroglycan at the ribbon synapses. Furthermore, we observed direct biochemical interactions between pikachurin and dystroglycan. Together, our results identify pikachurin as a dystroglycan-interacting protein and demonstrate that it has an essential role in the precise interactions between the photoreceptor ribbon synapse and the bipolar dendrites. This may also advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the retinal electrophysiological abnormalities observed in muscular dystrophy patients.

Abstract
Although several studies have shown that chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) has bactericidal activity against periodontal pathogens and exerts toxic effects on periodontal tissues, few have been directed to evaluate the mechanisms underlying its adverse effects on these tissues. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro cytotoxicity of CHX on cells that could represent common targets for its action in the surgical procedures for the treatment of periodontitis and peri-implantitis and to elucidate its mechanisms of action. Osteoblastic, endothelial and fibroblastic cell lines were exposed to various concentrations of CHX for different times and assayed for cell viability and cell death. Also analysis of mitochondrial membrane potential, intracellular Ca2+ mobilization and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation were done in parallel, to correlate CHX-induced cell damage with alterations in key parameters of cell homeostasis. CHX affected cell viability in a dose and time-dependent manners, particularly in osteoblasts. Its toxic effect consisted in the induction of apoptotic and autophagic/necrotic cell deaths and involved disturbance of mitochondrial function, intracellular Ca2+ increase and oxidative stress. These data suggest that CHX is highly cytotoxic in vitro and invite to a more cautioned use of the antiseptic in the oral surgical procedures.

Abstract
Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a lipid mediator, which affects many essential processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation and contraction in many cell types. We have previously demonstrated that the lipid mediator elicits Ca(2+) transients in a myoblastic cell line (C2C12) by interacting with its specific receptors (S1PR(s)). In the present study, we wanted to correlate the Ca(2+) response with activation of myoblastic cell contractility. C2C12 cells were first investigated for the expression and cellular organization of cytoskeletal proteins by immunoconfocal microscopy. We found that myoblasts exhibited a quite immature cytoskeleton, with filamentous actin dispersed as a web-like structure within the cytoplasm. To evaluate intracellular Ca(2+) mobilization, the cells were loaded with a fluorescent Ca(2+) indicator (Fluo-3), stimulated with S1P and simultaneously observed with differential interference contrast and fluorescence optics. Exogenous S1P-induced myoblastic cell contraction was temporally unrelated to S1P-induced intracellular Ca(2+) increase; cell contraction occurred within 5-8 s from stimulation, whereas intracellular Ca(2+) increase was evident only after 15-25 s. To support the Ca(2+) independence of myoblastic cell contraction, the cells were pretreated with a Ca(2+) chelator, BAPTA/AM, prior to stimulation with S1P. In these experimental conditions, the myoblasts were still able to contract, whereas the S1P-induced Ca(2+) transients were completely abolished. On the contrary, when C2C12 cells were induced to differentiate into skeletal myotubes, they responded to S1P with a rapid cell contraction concurrent with an increase in the intracellular Ca(2+). These data suggest that Ca(2+)-independent mechanism of cell contraction may be replaced by Ca(2+)-dependent ones during skeletal muscle differentiation.

Abstract
A gene (pegC) encoding aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) was located 3.4 kb upstream of a gene encoding polyethylene glycol (PEG) dehydrogenase (pegA) in Sphingomonas macrogoltabidus strain 103. ALDH was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified on a Ni-nitrilotriacetic acid agarose column. The recombinant enzyme was a homotetramer consisting of four 46.1-kDa subunits. The alignment of the putative amino acid sequence of the cloned enzyme showed high similarity with a group of NAD(P)-dependent ALDHs (identity 36-52%); NAD-binding domains (Rossmann fold and four glycine residues) and catalytic residues (Glu225 and Cys259) were well conserved. The cofactor, which was extracted from the purified enzyme, was tightly bound to the enzyme and identified as NADP. The enzyme contained 0.94 mol NADP per subunit. The enzyme was activated by Ca(2+), but by no other metals; no metal (Zn, Fe, Mg, or Mn) was detected in the purified recombinant enzyme. Activity was inhibited by p-chloromercuric benzoate, and heavy metals such as Hg, Cu, Pb and Cd, indicating that a cysteine residue is involved in the activity. Enzyme activity was independent of N,N-dimethyl-p-nitrosoaniline as an electron acceptor. Trans-4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-cinnamaldehyde was not oxidized as a substrate, but the compound worked as an inhibitor for the enzyme, as did pyrazole. The enzyme acted on n-aldehydes C(2)-C(14)) and PEG-aldehydes. Thus the enzyme was concluded to be a novel Ca(2+)-activating nicotinoprotein (NADP-containing) PEG-aldehyde dehydrogenase involved in the degradation of PEG in S. macrogoltabidus strain 103.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evidence shows that peripheral nervous system (PNS) is involved in systemic sclerosis (SSc), but few morphological studies have assessed the ultrastructural pathological modifications. The aim was to study ultrastructural modifications of skin PNS fibres in SSc according to subsets [limited SSc (lSSc) and diffuse SSc (dSSc)] and phases (early and advanced) of the disease. METHODS Skin biopsies were taken from the forearms of 23 SSc patients (11 lSSc and 12 dSSc) and 10 controls. Each biopsy was processed for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). RESULTS At TEM, observation in skin from early lSSc, signs of inflammation were evident, while PNS fibres were not damaged. The microvascular wall showed hypertrophic endothelial cells bulging into the lumen. In advanced lSSc, fibrosis prevailed on inflammation and slight ultrastructural alterations of PNS fibres were evident in the papillary derma. In early dSSc, ultrastructural alterations of PNS fibres, similar to those observed in the advanced phase of lSSc, were found together with signs of inflammation and fibrosis. In advanced dSSc, in the papillary and reticular dermis PNS fibres were reduced and showed relevant ultrastructural alterations. CONCLUSIONS In SSc, PNS ultrastructure damage is linked to the progression and severity of skin involvement. The alterations evolve from the early to the advanced phase mainly in the diffuse subset. In particular, the severe PNS lesions found in advanced lSSc are already present and widely diffuse in early dSSc and the microvascular involvement in early lSSc seems to precede the modification of the PNS in the skin. Thus, an early therapeutic approach can be useful to reduce the progression of PNS and skin damage in SSc patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES PNS is involved in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) since the earliest phases. Our aim is to perform an ultrastructural study on skin PNS fibers in SSc. METHODS Skin biopsies were taken from forearms of 8 patients affected by limited SSc (lSSc) and 3 controls and processed for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The semithin sections (2 mm) were observed at light microscope and optical fields were chosen for ultrathin sections (1 mm) preparation and TEM examination. RESULTS In lSSc skin, in the semithin sections, damaged areas are close to apparently spared areas. At TEM, in early lSSc patients, signs of inflammation and damaged microvessels are visible in derma. PNS fibers are no damaged. In advanced lSSc, fibrosis prevails on inflammation, and slight ultrastructural alterations of PNS fibers are evident in papillar derma. CONCLUSIONS PNS lesions are different in severity in lSSc according to the disease duration, resulting more severe in advanced than in early phase.

Abstract
Extensive ab initio calculations at the MP2/6-31G* level have been carried out to sample the energy surface for the interactions of the benzene dimers. This database has been used to parameterize two anisotropic single-site models, meant to be used as building blocks in hybrid models of complex, liquid crystal forming molecules. A quadrupolar Gay-Berne (GBQIII) and an S-function (SF) Corner potentials have been obtained in this way. Their ability to reproduce, qualitatively at least, the phase diagram as well as energetic and structural properties of benzene has been tested with Monte Carlo simulations and compared with previous literature potentials, GBQI [S. Gupta et al., Mol. Phys. 65, 961 (1988)] and GBQII [T. R. Walsh, Mol. Phys. 100, 2867 (2002)]. It turned out that GBQI showed no melting transition in the temperature range explored (100-400 K), while GBQII underwent a phase transition from solid to gas, with no liquid phase. Conversely, both models parameterized on our database of ab initio interaction energies (GBQIII and SF) gave rise to a stable liquid phase. Melting has been observed between 100 and 150 K (GBQIII) and in the range 300-350 K (SF), i.e., substantially below and slightly above the experimental value at ambient pressure, 278 K. The description of the crystal structure of benzene at atmospheric pressure is also in better agreement with experimental data if the SF model is used, while positional correlations in the liquid are better described by the GBQIII potential. The S-function potential is also computationally more convenient. These results could be useful in the semirealistic modeling of more complex molecules.

Abstract
When aluminum (Al) was added to a culture, growth of Rhodotorula glutinis IFO1125 was temporarily arrested, showing longer lag phases, depending on the Al concentrations (50-300 microM) added, but the growth rates were not affected at all. Resistant strains obtained by one round of plate treatment containing Al reverted the resistance level to the wild-type level when cultivated without Al. Repeated Al treatments, however, induced heritable and stable Al resistance, the level of which was increased up to 4,000 microM by stepwise increments in Al concentrations. Thus, the heritable Al resistance adaptively acquired was due neither to adaptation nor to mutation, but to a mechanism which has yet to be studied. Heritable Al resistance seemed to release the Al inhibition of magnesium uptake.

Abstract
Gap-junctions are specialized regions of intercellular contacts allowing electrical impulse propagation among adjacent cardiomyocytes. Connexin43 (Cx43) is the predominant gap-junction protein in the working ventricular myocardium and its reduced expression has been extensively implicated in the genesis of conduction abnormalities and re-entry arrhythmia of chronically hypertrophied hearts. In contrast, data on the role played by this protein during cardiac remodeling and early phases of developing hypertrophy are lacking. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated this issue using an experimental model of pig left ventricle (LV) volume overloading consisting in the creation of an aorto-cava fistula. At scheduled times (6, 24, 48, 96, 168 h, and 2, 3 months after surgery) echocardiographic and haemodynamic measurements were performed and myocardial biopsies were taken for the morphological and biochemical analyses. When faced with the increased load, pig myocardium underwent an initial period (from 6 up to 48 h) of remarkable tissue remodeling consisting in the occurrence of cardiomyocyte damage and apoptosis. After that time, the tissue developed a hypertrophic response that was associated with early dynamic changes (up-regulation) in Cx43 protein expression, as demonstrated by Western blot and confocal immunofluorescence analyses. However, an initial transient increase of this protein was also found after 6 h from surgery. With the progression of LV hypertrophy (from 168 hr up to 3 months), a reduction in the myocardial Cx43 expression was, instead, observed. The increased expression of Cx43 protein during acute hypertrophic response was associated with a corresponding increase in the levels of its specific mRNA, as detected by RT-PCR. We concluded that up-regulation of Cx43 gap-junction protein could represent an immediate compensatory response to support the new working conditions in the early stages of ventricular overloading.

Abstract
A fundamental study was conducted to develop a facility having an adequate air circulation system for growing healthy plants over a long-term under microgravity conditions in space. To clarify the effects of gravity on heat exchange between plant leaves and the ambient air, surface temperatures of sweet potato and barley leaves and replica leaves made of wet paper and copper were evaluated at gravity levels of 0.01, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g for 20 s each during parabolic aeroplane flights. Thermal images were captured using infrared thermography at an air temperature of 26 degrees C, a relative humidity of 18% and an irradiance of 260 W m-2. Mean leaf temperatures increased by 0.9-1.0 degrees C with decreasing gravity levels from 1.0 to 0.01 g and decreased by 0.5 degrees C with increasing gravity levels from 1.0 to 2.0 g. The increase in leaf temperatures was at most 1.9 degrees C for sweet potato leaves over 20 s as gravity decreased from 1.0 to 0.01 g. The boundary layer conductance to sensible heat exchange decreased by 5% when the gravity decreased from 1.0 to 0.01 g at the air velocity of 0.2 m s-1. The decrease in the boundary layer conductance with decrease in the gravity levels was more significant in a lower air velocity. Heat exchange between leaves and the ambient air was more retarded at lower gravity levels because of less sensible and latent heat transfers with less heat convection.

Abstract
Proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) is a new and emerging technique for the measurement and monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low concentrations in gaseous samples in more-or-less real time. Utilising chemical ionisation, it combines the desirable attributes of high sensitivity and short integration times with good precision and accuracy. Recently it has been exploited in applications related to atmospheric science. Here, the principles of operation of the PTR-MS are described, its advantages and disadvantages discussed, its inherent uncertainties highlighted, some of its uses in atmospheric sciences reviewed, and some suggestions made on its future application to atmospheric chemistry.

Abstract
We have previously shown that sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) can induce intracellular Ca(2+) mobilization and cell contraction in C2C12 myoblasts and that the two phenomena are temporally unrelated. Although Ca(2+)-independent mechanisms of cell contraction have been the focus of numerous studies on Ca(2+) sensitization of smooth muscle, comparatively less studies have focused on the role that these mechanisms play in the regulation of skeletal muscle contractility. Phosphorylation and activation of myosin by Rho-dependent kinase mediate most of Ca(2+)-independent contractile responses. In the present study, we examined the potential role of Rho/Rho-kinase cascade activation in S1P-induced C2C12 cell contraction. First, we showed that depletion of Ca(2+), by pre-treatment with BAPTA, did not affect S1P-induced myoblastic contractility, whereas it abolished S1P-induced Ca(2+) transients. These results correlated with the absence of troponin C and with the immature cytoskeletal organization of these cells. Experimental evidence demonstrating the involvement of Rho pathway in S1P-stimulated myoblast contraction included: the activation/translocation of RhoA to the membrane in response to agonist-stimulation in cells depleted of Ca(2+) and the inhibition of dynamic changes of the actin cytoskeleton in cells where Rho functions had been inhibited either by overexpression of RhoGDI, a physiological inhibitor of GDP dissociation from Rho proteins, or by pretreatment with Y-27632, a specific Rho kinase inhibitor. Contribution of protein kinase C in this cytoskeletal rearrangement was also evaluated. However, the pretreatment with Gö6976 or rottlerin, specific inhibitors of PKC alpha and PKC delta, respectively, failed to inhibit the agonist-induced myoblastic contraction. Single particle tracking of G-actin fluorescent probe was performed to statistically evaluate actin cytoskeletal dynamics in response to S1P. Stimulation with S1P was also able to increase the phosphorylation level of myosin light chain II. In conclusion, our results strongly suggest that Ca(2+)-independent/Rho-Rho kinase-dependent pathways may exert an important role in S1P-induced myoblastic cell contraction.
