Anger and disgust shape judgments of social sanctions across cultures, especially in high individual autonomy societies

When someone violates a social norm, others may think that some sanction would be appropriate. We examine how the experience of emotions like anger and disgust relate to the judged appropriateness of sanctions, in a pre-registered analysis of data from a large-scale study in 56 societies. Across the world, we find that individuals who experience anger and disgust over a norm violation are more likely to endorse confrontation, ostracism and, to a smaller extent, gossip. Moreover, we find that the experience of anger is consistently the strongest predictor of judgments of confrontation, compared to other emotions. Although the link between state-based emotions and judgments may seem universal, its strength varies across countries. Aligned with theoretical predictions, this link is stronger in societies, and among individuals, that place higher value on individual autonomy. Thus, autonomy values may increase the role that emotions play in guiding judgments of social sanctions.

Perceptions of the appropriate response to norm violation in 57 societies

Norm enforcement may be important for resolving conflicts and promoting cooperation. However, little is known about how preferred responses to norm violations vary across cultures and across domains. In a preregistered study of 57 countries (using convenience samples of 22,863 students and non-students), we measured perceptions of the appropriateness of various responses to a violation of a cooperative norm and to atypical social behaviors. Our findings highlight both cultural universals and cultural variation. We find a universal negative relation between appropriateness ratings of norm violations and appropriateness ratings of responses in the form of confrontation, social ostracism and gossip. Moreover, we find the country variation in the appropriateness of sanctions to be consistent across different norm violations but not across different sanctions. Specifically, in those countries where use of physical confrontation and social ostracism is rated as less appropriate, gossip is rated as more appropriate.

Little is known about people’s preferred responses to norm violations across countries. Here, in a study of 57 countries, the authors highlight cultural similarities and differences in people’s perception of the appropriateness of norm violations.

Short-term training programs for immigrants in the German welfare system: do effects differ from natives and why?

We evaluate the individual employment effects of four types of short-term training for immigrants and natives in the German welfare system and identify differences in the effects determined by unobservable factors. Based on comprehensive and unique administrative data, we apply propensity score matching in a dynamic setting to estimate the treatment effects and suggest the identification of unexplained effect differences between groups. The results show a mixed picture: two types of training increase the employment chances of immigrants, whereas the other two are rather ineffective. Effect differences between immigrants and natives predominantly result from socio-demographic composition.

The effects of hypoxia on the cells of the pulmonary vasculature

Pulmonary hypertension is associated with remodelling of pulmonary vessels. Chronic hypoxia is a common cause of pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary vascular remodelling. Vascular remodelling is characterised largely by fibroblast, smooth muscle and endothelial cell proliferation, which results in lumen obliteration. Chronic hypoxia elicits expression of mitogens, growth factors and cytokines by fibroblasts and endothelial cells, and also the suppression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase. Although hypoxic pulmonary vascular remodelling is associated with medial hypertrophy, many in vitro studies have found that hypoxia does not lead to a direct increase in smooth muscle cell proliferation. This paradox is not well understood and this review aims to examine the various reasons why this might be so. The present authors reviewed data from in vitro studies and also considered whether hypoxia could act on adjacent cells such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells to trigger smooth muscle cell proliferation. It is possible that hypoxia is sensed by fibroblasts, endothelial cells, or both, and relayed to adjacent pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells by intercellular signalling, causing proliferation. The present article reviews the data from in vitro studies of hypoxia on the three cellular components of the pulmonary vascular wall, namely endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts.

Sildenafil inhibits hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension

BACKGROUND

This study investigated the effect of the phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor sildenafil on the pulmonary vascular response to hypoxia in humans and mice.

METHODS AND RESULTS

In a randomized, double-blind study, sildenafil 100 mg or placebo was given orally to 10 healthy volunteers 1 hour before breathing 11% O(2) for 30 minutes. Pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) was measured with an indwelling right heart catheter. The acute 56% increase in mean PAP produced by hypoxia during placebo treatment (mean PAP [mean+/-SD mm Hg]: normoxia 16.0+/-2.1 versus hypoxia 25.0+/-4.8) was almost abolished by sildenafil (normoxia 16.0+/-2.1 versus hypoxia 18.0+/-3.6), with no significant effect on systemic blood pressure. In the isolated perfused lung of wild-type and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)-deficient mice, sildenafil markedly blunted acute hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction. Wild-type mice dosed orally with the drug (25 mg. kg(-1). d(-1)) throughout 3 weeks of exposure to hypoxia (10% O(2)) exhibited a significant reduction in right ventricular systolic pressure (placebo versus sildenafil: 43.3+/-9.9 versus 29.9+/-9.7 mm Hg, P<0.05) coupled with a small reduction in right ventricular hypertrophy and inhibition of pulmonary vascular remodeling. In eNOS mutant mice, sildenafil attenuated the increase in right ventricular systolic pressure but without a significant effect on right ventricular hypertrophy or vascular remodeling.

CONCLUSIONS

Sildenafil attenuates hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension in humans and mice and offers a novel approach to the treatment of this condition. The eNOS-NO-cGMP pathway contributes to the response to sildenafil, but other biochemical sources of cGMP also play a role. Sildenafil has beneficial pulmonary hemodynamic effects even when eNOS activity is impaired.

Differential regulation of G protein expression in rat hearts exposed to chronic hypoxia

Chronic hypoxia impairs adrenergic responsiveness. A modulation of Gs and/or G1 protein alpha-subunits may be associated with the downregulation of the beta-adrenergic receptors previously found in chronic hypoxia. G protein gene expression and protein level and function in rat hearts exposed to a 30-day hypobaric chronic hypoxia were compared with control rat hearts. No change was observed in G alpha s mRNA levels in either right or left ventricles. In right ventricles, mRNA levels of G alpha i-2 increased by 40% (P < 0.05), but not in left ventricles. In both left and right ventricles, chronic hypoxia did not modify G alpha i-2 and G alpha s protein amounts, but significantly decreased functional activity of G alpha s. In conclusion, gene expression, protein levels of G alpha s and G alpha i-2, and activity of G alpha s do not change in parallel fashion with chronic hypoxia. In chronic hypoxic right ventricles, although the mRNA level of G alpha i-2 is increased, the protein level is unchanged. One potential mechanism of desensitization to catecholamines in chronic hypoxia appears to involve a decreased functional activity of G alpha s in spite of normal mRNA and protein levels.
