Dynamics of fish larvae recruitment in the hydrographic basin of the Paraguay River in western Brazil

Abstract The conservation of fish assemblages depends on the longitudinal and lateral connectivity between riverine habitats, in particular during the breeding season and the initial development. This study investigated the composition and spatio-temporal structure in the ichthyoplankton of the hydrographic basin of the Paraguay River in western Brazil to identify the local spawning grounds and the importance of the longitudinal connectivity of economically valuable migratory species. Data were collected at 10 sites between two breeding seasons (2017/2018 and 2018/2019). Were collected 8,635 larvae, representing 55 taxa in 25 families, including the migratory species Brycon hilarii, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, Piaractus mesopotamicus, Prochilodus lineatus, Pseudoplatystoma spp., Salminus brasiliensis, Sorubim lima, and Zungaro jahu, which are important fishery resources, with the highest larval densities being recorded between November and January. The Sepotuba, Paraguay, Jauru, and Cabaçal rivers were the areas of greatest connectance, and should thus be considered critical for the conservation of the longitudinal connectivity of this fluvial system, indicating that the migratory species spawn upriver. More efficient fisheries management mechanisms are needed, respecting the spawning period of migratory species, maintaining quality and longitudinal connectivity between habitats, and characteristics necessary for successful larval recruitment.

NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES: A dataset of occurrence and abundance of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. Sublethal effects of environmental concentrations of caffeine on a neotropical freshwater fish

Caffeine is a contaminant frequently detected in water bodies. Growth trends in both human population and caffeine consumption per capita are expected to exacerbate the occurrence of caffeine in freshwaters. Yet the effects of caffeine on native fish fauna are poorly understood. We exposed larvae of an endemic Neotropical catfish (Rhamdia quelen) to a range of caffeine concentrations for 30 days. We found that larvae exposed to the highest concentration (16 mg L^-1) showed skeletal deformations and reduced growth. We further compiled measured environmental concentrations of caffeine in surface freshwater globally and performed a risk assessment. Our analysis points to a low risk to R. quelen and equally sensitive fish species in ~90% of the freshwater ecosystems considered in our analysis. The risk quotient is higher in freshwater ecosystems of South and Central America, where R. quelen is endemic. Although the ecotoxicological risk is currently low in most places, increased caffeine consumption, exacerbated by the lack of sanitation, is expected to increase caffeine concentrations in many parts of the world, posing a threat of sublethal morphological effects to local fish species.

Larval development of Characidium orientale (Actinopterygii: Crenuchidae) a small Neotropical fish

ABSTRACT The Characidium orientale Buckup & Reis, 1997 larvae development is described using specimens collected in the natural environment of Antas River, in the Taquari-Antas river basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Were considerate ontogenetic changes in morphology, pigmentation, fin morphology, and meristic characters. Thirty-six larvae (33 in the preflexion stage, two in flexion, and one in the postflexion stage), with a standard length between 4.24 and 11.26 mm were analyzed. The larvae of C. orientale are altricial and present fusiform body, subterminal mouth, long intestine with anal opening posterior to the vertical line over the median region of the body. Two chromatophores are evident in the interorbital region, as well pigments concentrated on the side of the body, forming a longitudinal stripe, and between the rays of the caudal fin, which intensify during the development. Also, a conspicuous remnant of the embryonic membrane (finfold) in front of the dorsal fin appears to be characteristic of species of the genus during larval development. The total number of myomeres varies from 32 to 35 (18-23 pre; 11-16 postanal). The main changes in morphometry occur during the preflexion stage and suggest physiological and behavioral changes.

Larval development of the freshwater croaker Pachypops fourcroi (La Cépède 1802) (Perciformes: Sciaenidae)

The larval development of Pachypops fourcroi from the lower Amazon River was described through morphological, meristic and morphometric features. Sixty-five larvae were examined and present a moderate body, slightly elliptical eyes and head ranging from moderate to large. The mouth is initially terminal and becomes subterminal throughout development with three barbels in the mentonian region. The larvae of P. fourcroi can be differentiated from other Sciaenidae in the Amazon basin by the pigmentation pattern, the presence of barbels, head depth, body depth and diameter, and shape of the eye.

Human impacts and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fish diversity

Abstract Neotropical Ichthyology promotes the Special Issue (SI) “Human impacts and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fish diversity” with the purpose of publishing relevant scientific articles on the current biodiversity crisis and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fishes in the Anthropocene. The SI is composed of 22 publications, being two review articles and 20 original articles. A total of 107 researchers contributed to these papers, involving 44 institutions based in Brazil and six other countries. Published articles investigated main anthropic activities and their impacts on fish diversity, with special focus on river regulation, mining, land use changes, aquaculture, and fisheries. Studies provided evidence about the loss of fish diversity in the Neotropics, including fish kill events, demographic changes, contamination, changes in assemblage structure, loss of taxonomic and functional diversity, besides the degradation of ecosystem functions and services, and the lack of effective protection and conservation. Studies were conducted in rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs from different Neotropical systems. The studies published in this SI represent a relevant sample of the current worrisome situation of freshwater fishes in the Neotropical region and call for urgent revision in environmental policies, management and conservation initiatives, and socioeconomic priorities.

Morphological divergences as drivers of diet segregation between two sympatric species of Serrapinnus (Characidae: Cheirodontinae) in macrophyte stands in a neotropical floodplain lake

Abstract Diet and morphology of Serrapinnus notomelas and Serrapinnus sp.1 were investigated across ontogeny, as a way to elucidate the key elements linked to the resource partitioning (a main driver for species coexistence). Fish sampling was conducted monthly between October 2010 and March 2012. Individuals were captured, identified, and classified into juvenile or adult. Our results show ontogenetic and interspecific differences in feeding abilities and morphological traits. Differences in body shape (relative area of the dorsal fin, length of head, height of the caudal peduncle, the aspect ratio of the pectoral and pelvic fin) favored divergent swimming performances (more maneuverability in S. notomelas and continuous swimming to Serrapinnus sp.1). We also observed divergences in trophic apparatus traits and correlations with different diets. In this context, it is highlighted that understanding the relationship between morphology and diet can assist in elucidating the processes that permeate the coexistence between sympatric species, and between ontogenetic periods. Besides, the relevant contribution of the measures of the trophic apparatus (gill raker length, the number of teeth cuspids, and intestinal coefficient) in trophic segregation seems to be a strong evidence in favor of the proposed discriminatory and predictive capacities of these traits.

Effects of pH on the incubation and early development of fish species with different reproductive strategies

Fish reproduction in natural environments tends to occur in conditions, including extreme pH values, ideal for the survival of offspring. In this context, the purpose of this study was to assess the influence of pH on both survival and early development of two fish species, Astyanax lacustris (short-distance migrating fish) and Piaractus mesopotamicus (long-distance migrating fish), with different reproductive strategies. Our experiments were divided into two tests (incubation and larviculture) at five pH levels. First was incubation through a water recirculation system using 2 L incubators followed by larviculture using a 2.5 L aquarium. pH had no influence on the hatching rate of A. lacustris eggs, but affected the yolk-sac diameter, while the newly-hatched larvae had some skeletal disorders. For P. mesopotamicus, pH influenced the hatching rate and perivitelline space, while the newly-hatched larvae had several skeletal disorders. The larviculture of A. lacustris revealed no effect on the survival rate, but the analyzed morphometric variables indicated significant differences between the treatments. An acidic pH negatively influenced the survival rate of P. mesopotamicus, and all morphometric variables also varied significantly between the treatments. We concluded that both the survival and development of A. lacustris and P. mesopotamicus revealed different responses at pH levels during incubation and larviculture tests.

Variation in the structure of the ichthyoplankton community in the lower Paraíba do Sul River

ABSTRACT The Paraíba do Sul River is affected by extensive water collection for supply, organic and industrial pollution, and dams. Nonetheless, the ichthyofauna maintains biodiversity and sustains artisanal fisheries. This study analyzes the composition, abundance and distribution of fish larvae, an important approach to determine the reproductive period and spawning sites. The sampling occurred from August 2011 through February 2013 in five sites at a transect between the banks on the lower reach of the Paraíba do Sul River. A total of 5,412 larvae belonging to 20 taxa was captured. The predominant order was Characiformes. Larvae of Prochilodus spp. and Leporinus spp. were the most abundant; larvae of Brycon insignis, an endangered species, were present. Fewer larvae were collected in the second reproductive cycle during a severe drought. The absence of eggs indicates that the study area is not used for spawning, and highlights the need for studies in the main channel and in the tributaries of the Paraíba do Sul River. Fish larvae need to have access to the marginal lagoons along the lower stretch of the river, an area which is the object of disputes between fishermen and farmers.

Spatial distribution and habitat use by early fish stages in a dammed river basin, Southern Brazil

Fish diversity loss is threatened by the construction of dams as they prevent the regular natural dispersal among populations. Thus, conservation of key riverine habitats for fish reproduction may be essential for the recruitment of new native species of fish. The present study aimed to identify key habitats for fish spawning and early development in the Paranapanema River basin, as well as to determine the taxonomic composition, reproductive and life-history strategy, and to report spatial distribution of eggs, larvae and juveniles. The importance of lagoons, tributaries, and sub-tributaries was evaluated in the Paranapanema River basin between October 2012 and March 2013. Eggs and larvae samples were collected at dawn and dusk with conical plankton nets (0.5 mm mesh size), whereas juveniles were captured during the day with seine and sieve (0.5 cm mesh size). A total of 547 eggs, 904 larvae and 1 228 juveniles were captured. We observed that 2 larvae and 288 juveniles of non-migratory species, parental care, and equilibrium life-history strategy, predominated in lagoons and tributaries. On the other hand, 13 larvae and 60 juveniles of short migratory distance, no parental care, and periodic life-history strategy predominated in sub-tributaries. The highest densities of eggs were recorded in tributaries and sub-tributaries (Tukey’s test, P = 0.001 and P = 0.03, respectively), and the highest densities of larvae were recorded for lagoons and tributaries (P = 0.005 and P = 0.0001, respectively). Captures of eggs and larvae were higher at night; while the highest catches per unit effort of juveniles were recorded for tributaries and sub-tributaries. Fish species that adopt different life-history strategies can use diverse types of habitats during the early stages. Lagoons, tributaries and sub-tributaries of the Paranapanema River play different roles in the reproductive success of fish fauna in a heavily modified basin. Early ontogeny of <i>Tatia neivai</i> (Ihering, 1930) (Osteichthyes, Auchenipteridae), a small catfish from Neotropical region

The early development of Tatia neivai (Ihering 1930) was analyzed (i) to characterize its morphological, morphometric and meristic development; and (ii) to examine its possible ontogenic variation as a result of the development of structures and organs necessary for survival. Samples were collected in the Baía River, basin Paraná River, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, between February 1999 and April 2000. After identification, the specimens were separated according to notochord development, and the morphometric and meristic characters were measured and counted. Forty-seven larvae and one juvenile with standard length ranging from 6.10 to 23.10 mm were analyzed. Larvae exhibit a cylindrical and highly pigmented body, small eyes, short intestine, terminal mouth, one pair of maxillary barbels and two pairs of mentonian barbels (relatively short). The juveniles presented a body shape similar to their adults. The total number of myomeres (33-35, 12 to 14 pre-anal and 20 to 23 postanal). Number of fin rays: dorsal I+4, anal I+9; pectoral I+5 and ventral six. During ontogeny, morphological changes observed in T. neivai have important ecological consequences, especially between flexion and postflexion stages (metamorphosis) when the larvae develop all necessary structures for its survival, such as locomotion and feeding.

Larval and juvenile development of Tatia intermedia (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae)

This study describes the morphology, morphometry and meristic characters of larval and juvenile Tatia intermedia collected in the middle Tocantins River and some of its tributaries. Six larvae of T. intermedia were examined and they have a moderately elongate body, head slightly dorso-ventrally depressed with a convex snout, small and round eyes and a subterminal mouth. In five juvenile stages observed, the head and eye are relatively smaller than in the larval stage and the snout remains convex and mouth becomes terminal.

External Morphology of Lophiosilurus alexandri Steindachner, 1876 during Early Stages of Development, and Its Implications for the Evolution of Pseudopimelodidae (Siluriformes)

Pseudopimelodidae are Neotropical catfishes characterized by having slightly to strongly depressed body in fully developed specimens. The largest species of the family with 500 mm SL, Lophiosilurus alexandri, experiences impressive changes in body shape during development, becoming extremely depressed when fully developed. Accordingly, Lophiosilurus alexandri is an ideal species to observe the morphological changes during ontogeny, and to seek solid interpretations on the polarity of characters. Specimens of distinct larval periods (yolk sac, flexion and postflexion; n = 186 specimens) and juvenile stages (n = 20) were analyzed. Changes in body shape, position of mouth and eye, morphology of fins and pigmentation were observed during the development of Lophiosilurus. Larvae (5.7–11.2 mm standard length) had pigmentation concentrated on the head and parts of body, eyes small and pigmented, short barbels, and well-developed finfold. Juveniles (15.9–28.1 mm standard length) had body shape similar to adult, with head depressed and bearing bony ridges, large mouth, dorsally-oriented eyes, small barbels and well-developed shoulder bulges (cleithral width). The greatest morphological changes in the development of L. alexandri occurred during the postflexion larval stage. Relative to standard length, measurements of snout length, head depth and body depth are smaller in juveniles than in larvae, but body width is larger. New interpretations on the phylogenetic characters related to these changes are provided in view of the two alternative hypotheses of the evolution of Pseudopimelodidae.

Early development of two tropical fishes (Perciformes: Sciaenidae) from the Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Brazil

<p>Las primeras fases del ciclo de vida no son conocidas lo suficiente para la mayoría de los peces de la región Neotropical. Así la descripción de larvas y juveniles de <em>Pachyurus bonariensis</em> y <em>Plagioscion ternetzi</em>, dos especies de corvinas que se encuentran en el Pantanal matogrossense, Brasil, fue realizada a través de cambios ontogénicos en la morfología externa, en la pigmentación y en el desarrollo de las aletas, al igual que en la morfometría y merística. El material fue recolectado en la bahía de Chacororé, río Cuiabá, entre marzo de 2000 y marzo 2004. Se analizaron 80 individuos de cada especie, siendo 60 larvas y 20 juveniles. Las larvas de <em>P. bonariensis</em> presentaron boca en posición terminal pasando a sub-terminal, ojos grandes, bien pigmentados y esféricos, tornándose pequeños y elípticos en post-flexión, espinas en el pre-opérculo (dos internas y cuatro externas); número total de miómeros variando entre 23 y 27, pigmentación inicialmente escasa intensificándose, principalmente, en la región ventral; secuencia de formación y número total de espinas y radios de las aletas: caudal, dorsal (XI+29-32), anal (II+6), pélvica (I+5) y pectoral (15-17). Por otro lado, las larvas de <em>P. ternetzi</em> presentan una boca terminal: ojos grandes, bien pigmentado y esféricos, disminuyendo a medida que se desarrolla, espinas en el pre-opérculo (tres internas y cuatro externas); número total de miómeros variando entre 23 y 26; pigmentación inicialmente escasa, volviéndose evidente solo al final de la post-flexión, con la presencia de algunos cromatóforos en la región superior de la cabeza; secuencia de formación y número total de espinas y radios de las aletas: caudal, dorsal (XI+30-36), anal (II+6), pélvica (I+5) y pectoral (16-18). En la relación de las variables morfométricas, sólo la longitud de la aleta anal-hocico diferían entre las dos especies, siendo inicialmente mayor en <em>P. ternetzi</em>, mientras que sólo se hizo más grande en los jóvenes de <em>P. bonariensis</em> después de 34 mm. A pesar de la dificultad de identificación intraespecífica entre larvas de peces recolectadas en ambientes naturales, las herramientas morfológicas y morfométricas utilizadas en el presente estudio fueron eficaces para la separación de las primeras etapas de desarrollo de las dos especies morfológicamente similares que comparten el mismo ambiente para la reproducción.</p><p><strong> </strong></p>

Early development in the mouth-brooding cichlid fish Satanoperca pappaterra (Perciformes: Cichlidae)

The Neotropical region exhibits the largest diversity of fish worldwide; however, little is known about the early development of fish species from this region. Therefore, to contribute to this knowledge, this study aimed to morphologically describe the early stages of development (eggs, larvae and juveniles) of S. pappaterra using morphometric and meristic traits, and to assess changes in growth rates throughout larval and juvenile development by analyzing the relationships between various morphometric traits using analytical regression models. Both juvenile and adult individuals with mouth-brooded offspring were collected along the basins of the Cuiaba and Manso Rivers in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil between March 2000 and March 2004. After the adults were identified, the offspring were classified according to its stage (embryonic, larval or juvenile period), and various morphometric and meristic variables were individually measured (when possible). The eggs of this species are yellow in color, oval shaped, show dendritic pigmentation within their yolk, have small to moderately sized perivitelline spaces and lack a mucous membrane and oil droplets. The horizontal and vertical diameters of the sample yolks ranged from 1.43mm to 2.70mm and 1.05mm to 1.68 mm, respectively. The standard length of the larval period varied from 4.30mm to 7.16mm, and the standard length of the juvenile period varied from 10.29mm to 24.57mm. Larvae exhibit yolk sacs with internal dendritic pigmentation and dark punctate pigmentation in the dorsal and ventral body regions, whereas irregular transverse spots along the flanks are observed during the juvenile period. Adhesive organs are only present during the yolk-sac stage and at the beginning of the flexion stage. The mouth is terminal during all stages of development. The myomere number varied from 22 to 29 (9 to 16 pre-anal and 10 to 16 post-anal), and the maximal numbers of fin rays and spines were as follows: dorsal, XVI+10; anal, IV+8; pectoral, 16; and pelvic, I+8. Growth analyses identified periods of important change in larval morphology (i.e., metamorphosis), particularly during the flexion and post-flexion stages and in juveniles. Therefore, the morphological development of S. pappaterra is consistent with the ecological requirements of this species, which primarily occurs in structured lentic environments with aquatic macrophytes.

Diel vertical migration and spatial overlap between fish larvae and zooplankton in two tropical lakes, Brazil

The effect of fish larvae on the diel vertical migration of the zooplankton community was investigated in two tropical lakes, Finado Raimundo and Pintado lakes, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Nocturnal and diurnal samplings were conducted in the limnetic region of each lake for 10 consecutive months from April 2008 to January 2009. The zooplankton community presented a wide range of responses to the predation pressure exerted by fish larvae in both environments, while fish larvae showed a typical pattern of normal diel vertical migration. Our results also demonstrated that the diel vertical migration is an important behaviour to avoid predation, since it reduces the spatial overlap between prey and potential predator, thus supporting the hypothesis that vertical migration is a defence mechanism against predation.

Desenvolvimento larval de Brycon hilarii (Characiformes, Characidae)

O presente estudo caracterizou o desenvolvimento inicial de Brycon hilarii (Valenciennes, 1850) através de caracteres morfométricos e merísticos e analisou as relações entre as características morfométricas das larvas ao longo do desenvolvimento usando modelos de regressão linear, quadrática e linear por partes. O material foi obtido nas bacias dos rios Cuiabá e Manso, Mato Grosso, Brasil, entre março de 2000 e março de 2004. Os indivíduos foram identificados e separados de acordo com o grau de desenvolvimento da notocorda e, posteriormente, medidos e contados os caracteres morfométricos e merísticos, respectivamente. O comprimento padrão variou entre 3,25 e 26,00 mm. Inicialmente, as larvas apresentaram maior concentração de pigmentos dendríticos ao longo do intestino e, em flexão e pós-flexão, intensificaram-se no dorso do corpo. Uma mancha umeral e outra no pedúnculo caudal foram observadas no final do estágio de pós-flexão. O intestino apresentou-se longo, o focinho curto, o órgão adesivo presente em larval vitelino e pré-flexão e a boca terminal por todo o desenvolvimento. O número total de miômeros variou de 41 a 50 (23 a 30 pré e 16 a 24 pós-anal). O número de raios das nadadeiras foi: dorsal 11; anal 30; peitoral 15 e ventral oito. A análise do crescimento indicou maior metamorfose no estágio de flexão.

Effect of abiotic variables on fish eggs and larvae distribution in headwaters of Cuiabá River, Mato Grosso State, Brazil

Researches on ichthyoplankton seems to be an important tool to identification of spawning areas and periods for freshwater fish. Ichthyoplankton was sampled monthly in the headwaters of the Cuiabá River, upper Paraguay River basin, (Mato Grosso State, Brazil), and in four of its tributaries, between November 2007 and March 2008, to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of fish eggs and larvae and the influence of regional and local variables on their distribution. In total, 22,067 eggs and 1,045 larvae were collected. A significant negative correlation was found between egg density and the variables of river level and flow volume. Larval density was not significantly correlated with any of the regional variables. The egg and larval densities were significantly higher at the sampling sites in the main river. The highest densities were found in environments with greater river widths, intermediate depths and lowest values of dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and transparency. Anostomidae, Zungaro zungaro, Bryconamericus spp., Pimelodus spp., Pimelodidae, Auchenipteridae, and Siluriformes were the most abundant groups of larvae, and were observed at the sampling sites in the main river. The study site is an important spawning area for migratory and, non-migratory fish species, and highlight the importance of the main river to the reproductive event, by the influence of local variables transparency and river width, which in turn maybe temporally influenced by the river level.

Variability in the trophic position of larval fishes in the upper Paraná floodplain based on δ15N

The upper Paraná River floodplain is composed of several marginal lagoons, making it a natural breeding ground for many fish species at developmental stages. The aim of this study is to estimate the trophic positions of these fishes based on feed intake (measured via diet) and nitrogen assimilation (measured via δ(15)N). The monthly samplings were concentrated during the spawning season in the Ivinheima River, which is located in the upper Paraná River floodplain. The specimens were grouped into preflexion, flexion and postflexion stages. Trophic positions were estimated based on the isotope value of nitrogen and on diet. During the developmental stages of P. squamosissimus, there were significant differences in the isotope values of δ(15)N; for H. edentatus, however, no significant differences were found. During the developmental stages, both species were classified as either at or above the third trophic level. Once this information is obtained for other species and components of the ecosystem, it will not only provide a more precise view of the energy allocation and flow in the ecosystem, but will also make possible for management measures to promote sustainability in this environment.

Temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton in the Ivinhema River (Mato Grosso do Sul State/ Brazil): influence of environmental variables

Information on ichthyoplankton is an important tool in determining reproduction periods that - if associated to environmental variables - allows for inferences about the factors that regulate their intensity, beginning, and ending. In this context, this study aims to establish (i) ichthyoplankton composition; (ii) temporal variations in the overall density of eggs and larvae and among the most important taxa; and (iii) the influence of some abiotic and biotic variables on these organisms' abundance. Ichthyoplankton sampling was undertaken during the period between April 2005 and March 2006 at the Ivinhema River, upper Paraná River basin (MS/Brazil). Differences in the ichthyoplankton's temporal variation were evaluated using unifactorial ANOVAs. Principal Component Analysis and Pearson's correlation were used for the relationships between eggs and larvae densities and environmental variables. A total of 3,341 eggs and 2,896 larvae were captured during the period studied, and most of them were medium-sized and large species that carried out some type of reproductive migration. The highest densities of eggs and larvae occurred during the months of spring and summer, except for those of Bryconamericus stramineus, which was most abundant during the winter. The density of ichthyoplankton was most positively correlated with the water's outflow and temperature. However, Plagioscion squamosissimus was positively related to the increase in pH and in zooplanktonic organisms, while B. stramineus was inversely correlated with water outflow and temperature. The study concludes that spawning is most intense in the spring and summer, especially between November and January, and is related to the greatest values of water temperature and outflow. Nevertheless, the response and reproductive intensity in relation to the environmental variables vary according to the species.

Composição taxonômica da assembleia de larvas de peixes no reservatório de Rosana, Rio Paranapanema, Brasil

Em reservatórios, são escassos os estudos que consideram as fases iniciais do ciclo de vida de peixes, sendo que informações sobre a ecologia de larvas de peixes são úteis para o entendimento da biologia das espécies, visto que os estágios iniciais representam um período crítico no ciclo de vida dos peixes. Neste contexto, o conhecimento a respeito das assembleias de larvas pode ser valioso para a predição e o entendimento do recrutamento, auxiliando desta maneira, no manejo do ambiente. Desta forma, o presente trabalho pretende verificar a composição da assembleia de larvas de peixes em diferentes regiões do reservatório. As coletas foram realizadas trimestralmente (março, junho, setembro e dezembro) no ano de 2002, nas regiões limnética e litorânea das zonas fluvial, transição e lacustre do reservatório de Rosana. No laboratório, o material foi triado e as larvas foram separadas e identificadas ao menor nível taxonômico possível. Os táxons que tiveram maior contribuição na região limnética foram Plagioscion squamosissimus (Perciformes), Hypophthalmus edentatus, Pimelodus maculatus (Siluriformes), Astyanax spp. e Roeboides descalvadensis (Characiformes), enquanto na região litorânea Bryconamericus stramineus e Apareiodon affinis (Characiformes). As regiões limnética e litorânea do reservatório, assim como suas respectivas zonas apresentaram diferenças na composição de espécies de larvas e a segregação das assembleias pode estar sendo influenciada pela preferência por habitats ou por questões evolutivas que envolvem as estratégias reprodutivas das espécies.

Desenvolvimento inicial de Pyrrhulina australis Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903 (Characiformes, Lebiasinidae)

Este trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento inicial de Pyrrhulina australis Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903, o único Lebiasinidae da planície alagável do Alto Rio Paraná. Para isso, foram analisados 80 indivíduos, sendo 60 larvas e 20 juvenis, coletados entre os anos de 1992 e 2005, em vários ambientes (rios, canais e lagoas). De cada exemplar, foram obtidos dados morfométricos e merísticos e, posteriormente, o padrão de crescimento entre as variáveis morfométricas foi analisado. As larvas apresentaram grande concentração de pigmentos na região superior do intestino, da cabeça e ao redor da boca. A notocorda foi caracterizada por possuir um prolongamento que, posteriormente, diferenciou-se em um raio da nadadeira caudal. A seqüência de formação das nadadeiras foi: caudal, dorsal, anal, pélvica e peitoral. Em relação aos miômeros, observou-se que estes variaram de 23 a 32 (12-20 pré- e 10-16 pós-anal). A análise do crescimento revelou que o comprimento do focinho e o diâmetro do olho foram alométricos, enquanto a altura e o comprimento da cabeça, bem como a altura do corpo e a distância pré-peitoral apresentaram crescimento abrupto, evidenciando diferentes taxas de crescimento entre os períodos larval e juvenil. Esses resultados revelam que neste intervalo ocorre grande parte da metamorfose na espécie.

Fish larvae from the upper Paraná River: do abiotic factors affect larval density?

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of abiotic factors on fish larvae occurrence. Samplings were carried out monthly at 12 stations (grouped in four areas) in the Amambaí, Ivaí and Paraná rivers and in the Itaipu Reservoir (upper Paraná River basin), from October 1994 to January 1995 (spawning season). Simultaneously, we obtained water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, water level, water velocity, and rainfall. Principal Component Analyses (PCA) and Detrended Correspondence Analyses (DCA) were applied to summarize abiotic and larvae density data, respectively. Amambaí River differed significantly from the other areas in relation to abiotic factors. Itaipu Reservoir differed significantly from the other areas considering species composition, and the Ivaí River also differed from the Paraná River. The relationship among PCA and DCA axes were significant, indicating that abiotic factors do influence larva. For example: Leporinus elongatus prefered the Amambaí River, Hypophthalmus edentatus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, and Hoplias aff. malabaricus the Itaipu Reservoir, and Pimelodus maculatus, Auchenipterus osteomystax and Iheringichthys labrosus the Ivaí River. We suggest that species selected some abiotic factors characteristic to a given environment as spawning grounds.

Spatial and temporal distribution of larvae and juveniles of Hoplias aff. malabaricus (Characiformes, Erythrinidae) in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil

Spatial and temporal distribution of larvae and juveniles of trahira, Hoplias aff. malabaricus (Erythrinidae), and their relationship with environmental parameters in the Upper Paraná River floodplain were analyzed. Sampling of larvae and juveniles of H. aff. malabaricus has been conducted during the period from November 1991 through February 1995, with 42 sampling stations distributed in four sub-areas: Ivinhema I, Ivinhema II, Baía, and Paraná. During the same period, data were obtained for water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, river level, precipitation index, and photoperiod. The largest catches of larvae were in the Ivinhema I sub-area (47.06%), and of juveniles in the Paraná sub-area (54.55%). Larvae and juveniles were caught from October to February. Larvae were mainly collected at night and in all types of environments sampled (lotic, semi-lotic, and lentic). Principal Component Analysis of the environmental parameters and larval density showed that the largest catches were obtained in dry season months, with low values for temperature, electrical conductivity, river level, and photoperiod, and with high concentrations of dissolved oxygen and pH. This reproductive strategy may minimizes predation and maximizes food utilization, as it enables the fish to reach advanced developmental stages, while most other species are spawning.
