Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and adverse effects of celecoxib after total knee arthroplasty. Keywords in the PubMed and Scopus databases were used to find article abstracts. Each included clinical trial was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool, and we extracted data on postoperative pain assessment using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at rest, ambulation, and active range of motion, rescue analgesic intake, and adverse effects. Inverse variance tests with mean differences were used to analyze the numerical variables. The Mantel-Haenszel statistical method and the odds ratio were used to evaluate the dichotomous data. According to this qualitative assessment (n = 482), two studies presented conclusions in favor of celecoxib (n = 187), one showed similar results between celecoxib and the placebo (n = 44), and three clinical trials did not draw conclusions as to the effectiveness of celecoxib versus the placebo (n = 251). Moreover, the evaluation of the rescue analgesic intake showed that the patients receiving celecoxib had a lower intake compared to patients receiving a placebo (n = 278, I2 = 82%, p = 0.006, mean difference = -6.89, 95% IC = -11.76 to -2.02). In conclusion, the pooled analysis shows that administration of celecoxib alone results in a decrease in rescue analgesic consumption compared to a placebo after total knee surgery.

Abstract
Medicinal plants have been historically significant for treating common human diseases in Mexico. Although some ethnobotanical research exists, limited ethnomedicinal data has documented medicinal plants employed for eye health. This review focuses on ethnomedicinal information and preclinical and clinical studies regarding medicinal plants used in Mexico for treating symptoms associated with eye conditions. An electronic database search was conducted by consulting scientific articles, books about Mexican herbal medicine, and academic theses. This work recorded 69 plant species belonging to 26 plant families, especially plants from the Crassulaceae family, which are used as remedies for irritation and infections in the eye. Eight of these medicinal plants have been the subject of preclinical studies using ocular models, and one medicinal plant has been tested in clinical trials. The evidence of pharmacological effects indicates the promising therapeutic potential of these medicinal plants for developing new treatments for eye conditions. However, toxicological studies are necessary to ensure safe application to the eye, particularly as traditional medicine continues to be relied upon worldwide. In addition, this review highlights the need to perform ethnobotanical and phytochemical studies in Mexico regarding the medicinal flora used as remedies for eye conditions.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the analgesic effect of different doses of tapentadol immediate release (IR) and its adverse effects after a bunionectomy. Pubmed, Cochrane, Lilacs, Medline, and Imbiomed were used to identify abstracts of scientific publications related to the keywords of this systematic review (PROSPERO ID CRD42023437295). Moreover, the risk of bias in all included articles was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool. Data on the sum of pain intensity, total pain relief, global assessment, and adverse effects were extracted. The statistical method of inverse variance with means difference was used to evaluate the numerical data and the Mantel-Haenszel and Odd Ratio test to analyze the dichotomous data. In addition, the number needed to treat, the number needed to harm, and the 95% confidence intervals were calculated. A qualitative evaluation (n = 2381) was carried out according to the conclusions of the authors. Tapentadol (n = 1772) was more effective in relieving postoperative pain than the placebo (n = 609) after a bunionectomy. In addition, the analgesic efficacy of IR tapentadol (n = 1323) versus the placebo (n = 390) was evaluated in a total of 1713 patients using a global evaluation of the treatments. All three doses of IR tapentadol showed better results compared to the placebo after a bunionectomy. Finally, the adverse effects have a direct relationship with the dose, and the greatest number of adverse effects are most observed with tapentadol IR 100 mg (n = 2381). It is concluded that tapentadol IR (100 mg) leads to the best satisfaction score in this meta-analysis.

Abstract
Argemone ochroleuca Sweet (Papaveraceae) is used in folk medicine as a sedative and hypnotic agent. This study aimed to evaluate the anxiolytic-like, sedative, antidepressant-like, and anticonvulsant activities of a dichloromethane extract of A. ochroleuca stems (AOE), chemically standardized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and its active compound dihydrosanguinarine (DHS). The anxiolytic-like, sedative, antidepressant-like, and anticonvulsant activities of the AOE (0.1-50 mg/kg p.o.) and DHS (0.1-10 mg/kg p.o.) were evaluated using murine models. A possible mechanism for the neurological actions induced by the AOE or DHS was assessed using inhibitors of neurotransmission pathways and molecular docking. Effective dose 50 (ED50) values were calculated by a linear regression analysis. The AOE showed anxiolytic-like activity in the cylinder exploratory test (ED50 = 33 mg/kg), and antidepressant-like effects in the forced swimming test (ED50 = 3 mg/kg) and the tail suspension test (ED50 = 23 mg/kg), whereas DHS showed anxiolytic-like activity (ED50 = 2 mg/kg) in the hole board test. The AOE (1-50 mg/kg) showed no locomotive affectations or sedation in mice. A docking study revealed the affinity of DHS for α2-adrenoreceptors and GABAA receptors. The anxiolytic-like and anticonvulsant effects of the AOE are due to GABAergic participation, whereas the antidepressant-like effects of the AOE are due to the noradrenergic system. The noradrenergic and GABAergic systems are involved in the anxiolytic-like actions of DHS.

Abstract
Neophytadiene (NPT) is a diterpene found in the methanolic extracts of Crataeva nurvala and Blumea lacera, plants reported with anxiolytic-like activity, sedative properties, and antidepressant-like actions; however, the contribution of neophytadiene to these effects is unknown. This study determined the neuropharmacological (anxiolytic-like, antidepressant-like, anticonvulsant, and sedative) effects of neophytadiene (0.1-10 mg/kg p.o.) and determined the mechanisms of action involved in the neuropharmacological actions using inhibitors such as flumazenil and analyzing the possible interaction of neophytadiene with GABA receptors using a molecular docking study. The behavioral tests were evaluated using the light-dark box, elevated plus-maze, open field, hole-board, convulsion, tail suspension, pentobarbital-induced sleeping, and rotarod. The results showed that neophytadiene exhibited anxiolytic-like activity only to the high dose (10 mg/kg) in the elevated plus-maze and hole-board tests, and anticonvulsant actions in the 4-aminopyridine and pentylenetetrazole-induced seizures test. The anxiolytic-like and anticonvulsant effects of neophytadiene were abolished with the pre-treatment with 2 mg/kg flumazenil. In addition, neophytadiene showed low antidepressant effects (about 3-fold lower) compared to fluoxetine. On other hand, neophytadiene had no sedative or locomotor effects. In conclusion, neophytadiene exerts anxiolytic-like and anticonvulsant activities with the probable participation of the GABAergic system.

Abstract
Ceiba aesculifolia (Kunth) Britten & Baker f (Malvaceae) is used for the folk treatment of mood disorders. C. aesculifolia bark was extracted in ethanol, and the extract (CAE) was chemically standardized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This study evaluated the effects of CAE (10-100 mg/kg p.o.) on anxiolytic-like activity, sedation, locomotor activity, depression-like activity, and spatial working memory using in vivo rodent models. A possible mechanism for the anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like actions induced by CAE was assessed using neurotransmission pathway inhibitors. Myristic acid was one of the compounds found in CAE using GC-MS. This study also evaluated the anxiolytic-like activity and the sedative actions of myristic acid and assessed a possible mechanism of action using neurotransmission pathway inhibitors and an in silico analysis. CAE elicited anxiolytic-like activity and antidepressant-like effects (ED50 = 57 mg/kg). CAE (10-100 mg/kg) did not affect locomotor coordination or induce sedation. The anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like actions of CAE were reverted by prazosin, suggesting a possible participation of the noradrenergic system. The anxiolytic-like activity of myristic acid was reverted by the co-administration of prazosin and partially reverted by ketanserin. The docking study revealed that myristic acid can form favorable interactions within 5-HT2A and α1A-adrenoreceptor binding pockets.

Abstract
Latin America is a multicultural region with ancient traditional medicine. There is extensive knowledge of the use of medicinal plants for wound healing in this region. Nevertheless, many of these medicinal plants lack pharmacological, toxicological, and chemical studies. This review focuses on the ethnomedicinal, phytochemical, and pharmacological (preclinical and clinical) studies of medicinal plants with wound healing activity, from Latin America. An electronic database search was conducted by consulting scientific articles and books. A total of 305 plant species with wound healing activity were recorded, based on traditional medicine. Most medicinal plants used in wound healing in Latin America are topically administered; their methods of preparation are mainly by water infusion from aerial parts. Only thirty-five percent of medicinal plants used in traditional medicine for wound healing have been experimentally validated for their pharmacological effects, and the wound healing activity of five medicinal plants has been studied in clinical trials. In all, 25 compounds (mostly terpenes and flavonoids) have been isolated from medicinal plants with wound healing activity; therefore, extensive work is necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the wound healing effects of medicinal plants in Latin America. The mechanism of action of medicinal plants, their toxicological actions on the skin, and their bioactive compounds, have yet to be investigated. This review on the ethnomedicinal, phytochemical, and pharmacological studies, of medicinal plants from Latin America with wound healing activity, offers promising data for further studies, as well as providing new insights into their possible role in wound care.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Laelia anceps and Cyrtopodium macrobulbon are two orchids used in Mexican traditional medicine for treating pain. AIM OF THE STUDY The individual antinociceptive activity of ethanol extracts from the roots of Laelia anceps (LAE) and Cyrtopodium macrobulbon (CME) was evaluated, and their metabolomic profiles were comparatively evaluated. The antinociceptive activity of CME and naproxen combination (1:1) was also addressed. MATERIALS AND METHODS The antinociceptive actions of LAE and CME were examined using three nociceptive tests. The combination of CME with naproxen was evaluated in the acetic acid test using isobologram analysis. Metabolomic analysis was performed using capillary reversed phase liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-high resolution mass spectrometry and the MS-DIAL 4.70 software was used for data analysis and statistics. RESULTS LAE (ED50 = 48.4 mg/kg) and CME (ED50 = 17.8 mg/kg) showed antinociceptive activity in the acetic acid test. Pre-treatment with L-NAME reverted the antinociceptive effects of LAE and CME in the acetic acid test. LAE (ED50 = 97 mg/kg) and CME (ED50 = 29 mg/kg) also induced antinociceptive activity in the second phase of the formalin test. The combination of CME with naproxen induced synergistic (interaction index = 0.434) antinociceptive effects (ED50 = 10.6 mg/kg). Overall, 156 compounds allocated in 97 different ontologies were found to be differentially expressed in the two orchids; among them, 125 compounds corresponded to LAE and 31 to CME. Three phenanthrene derivatives annotated in CME might be associated with its antinociceptive activity. CONCLUSION LAE and CME induced antinociceptive activity with the possible participation of the nitric oxide pathway. CME in combination with naproxen synergistically produces antinociceptive effects in the acetic acid test. The untargeted metabolomic analysis allowed for annotation of several compounds potentially involved in the therapeutic potential of two plants; among them, three phenanthrene derivatives might contribute to the observed antinociceptive activity.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Asclepias curassavica L. (Apocynaceae) is a perennial shrub used in the folk treatment of parasitism, pain, and inflammation. AIM OF THE STUDY This work assessed the antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and sedative effects of an ethanol extract from the aerial parts of Asclepias curassavica (ACE). MATERIALS AND METHODS The antiparasitic activity against Trichomonas vaginalis was evaluated using the trypan blue exclusion test. The in vitro anti-inflammatory actions of ACE (1-200 μg/ml) were analyzed using LPS-stimulated primary murine macrophages. The in vivo pharmacological activity of ACE (50-200 mg/kg p.o.) was evaluated using animal models of inflammation (TPA-induced ear edema test and carrageenan-induced paw edema test) and nociception (acetic acid-induced writhing test, formalin-induced licking test, and hot plate test). RESULTS ACE showed poor antiparasitic effects against Trichomonas vaginalis (IC50 = 302 μg/ml). ACE increased the production of IL-10 in both in vitro assays (EC50 = 3.2 pg/ml) and in vivo assays (ED50 = 111 mg/kg). ACE showed good antinociceptive actions (ED50 = 158 mg/kg in phase 1 and ED50 = 83 mg/kg in phase 2) in the formalin test. Pre-treatment with naloxone blocked the antinociceptive response induced by ACE. In addition, ACE did not induce sedative effects or motor coordination deficits in mice. CONCLUSION Findings showed that the anti-inflammatory activity of ACE is associated with increasing levels of IL-10 in both in vitro and in vivo assays, whereas the antinociceptive effect is associated with the participation of the opioidergic system, without inducing sedation or motor coordination impairment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to assess the prevalence of herbal medicine (HM) use and factors influencing HM usage including the identification of the main plants consumed by patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in central-western Mexico. DESIGN A total of 1862 patients with diabetes were surveyed in public and private hospitals in four states (Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, and San Luis Potosi) of the central-western region of Mexico. The chi-square test was used to assess associations between HM use and demographic characteristics, such as glucose levels, presence of complications and comorbidities, as well as the selected therapy to treat T2DM. RESULTS The prevalence of HM use (59.2%) in patients with T2DM was mainly associated with education level (p = 0.001), time of diagnosis of T2DM (p = 0.004), presence of complications (p < 0.001) and comorbidities (p = 0.018) and the use of insulin (p < 0.001). These patients report a higher consumption of herbal medicine compared to those on glycemic control (p < 0.001). The most frequently used medicinal plants to treat T2DM were nopal (54.9%), moringa (26.7%), and aloe (22.1%). CONCLUSION The prevalence of HM use to treat T2DM in west-central Mexico is high (59.2%) and its consumption is mostly carried out without the recommendation of a health professional (91.9%). The use of HM increases mainly when the patient uses insulin, during complications of the disease or in patients with an inadequate glycemic control.

Abstract
This study evaluated the inhibitory effect of myristic acid (MA) on models of inflammation and nociception. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activities of MA were assessed on LPS-stimulated macrophages, membrane stabilization assay, and inhibition of protein denaturation, whereas the inhibitory activity of MA on in vivo inflammation was assessed on TPA-induced ear edema using acute and chronic assays in mice. The inhibitory effect of MA on nociception was assessed using three in vivo models. MA exerted in vitro anti-inflammatory activity by the increase (58%) in the production of IL-10 in LPS-stimulated macrophages. In the in vivo assay, MA showed good anti-inflammatory effects on the acute (ED50 = 62 mg/kg) and chronic (ED50 = 77 mg/kg) TPA-induced ear edema. The antinociceptive activity of MA was related to the participation of the nitrergic system in the formalin-induced paw licking test. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Previous studies with different plant extracts containing MA, as one of their major components, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive actions. However, the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive actions of myristic acid have not been previously reported. The results suggest that MA induced anti-inflammatory effects in LPS-stimulated macrophages through the participation of IL-10. The antinociceptive effects of MA are attributed to the participation of the nitrergic system.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of allopathic and complementary medicine use for preventing the infection with SARS-CoV-2 in Mexico. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire among general adult population (n = 16,724) of the 32 Mexican states from March to November 2020. Methods The factors associated with the use, self-medication practice, and adverse reactions due the consumption of allopathic and complementary medicine to prevent infection with SARS-CoV-2 virus were assessed using a structured questionnaire. The suspected adverse reactions associated with the use of drugs or complementary medicine were reported. Results The prevalence (42.9%) of allopathic and/or complementary medicine use for preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection was mainly associated with unemployment [OR:2.026 (1.722–2.283)]. Acetaminophen (n = 2272) and vitamin C (n = 3252) were the main allopathic and complementary medicine products used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection, respectively. The prevalence of self-medication and adverse reactions was 35.3% and 4.8%, respectively. Self-medication [OR:1.930 (1.633–2.282)] and adverse reactions [OR:2.603 (2.015–3.363)] were mainly associated with individuals of low socioeconomic status. Hydroxychloroquine (21.2%) and chloroquine (15.2%) showed the highest prevalence of adverse reactions, which were mainly related to gastrointestinal disorders. Conclusion The use of medications and complementary medicine to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection is prevalent (almost one-half of the respondents) among Mexican population, and it is mainly associated with unemployment. Self-medication and the adverse reactions derived from self-medication are also prevalent and seem to be influenced by low socioeconomic status.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE There are plant species used in the Mexican traditional medicine for the empirical treatment of anxiety and depression. AIM OF THE STUDY This work assessed the prevalence of self-medication with medicinal plants and the prevalence of the concomitant use of prescribed psychiatric drugs and medicinal plants for treating symptoms associated with anxiety and depression during the Covid-19 lockdown in Mexico. MATERIALS AND METHODS The suspected adverse reactions associated with drug-herb interactions were assessed. The factors associated with self-medication, the concomitant use of herb-drug combinations, and the presence of adverse reactions due their combined use is also reported. The study was descriptive and cross-sectional using an online questionnaire conducted among population with symptoms associated with anxiety and depression (n = 2100) from seven states of central-western Mexico. RESULTS The prevalence of the use of herbs (61.9%) and the concomitant use of drug-herb combinations (25.3%) were associated with being diagnosed with mental illness [OR:2.195 (1.655-2.912)] and the use of psychiatric medications [OR:307.994 (178.609-531.107)], respectively. The presence of adverse reactions (n = 104) by the concomitant use of drug-herb combinations was associated with being unemployed [p = 0.004, OR: 3.017 (1.404-6.486)]. CONCLUSION Health professionals should be aware if their patients concomitantly use medicinal plants and psychiatric drugs. Public health campaigns should promote the possible adverse reactions that might produce the concomitant use of drug-herb combinations for mental illnesses.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Eryngium carlinae F. Delaroche (Apiaceae) is an herb used in folk medicine as a diuretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory agent. AIM OF THE STUDY This work assessed the diuretic, antinociceptive, and anti-inflammatory actions of an ethanol extract from the leaves and stems of Eryngium carlinae (ECE). These ethnomedicinal properties of ECE were scientifically validated using in vitro and in vivo assays. MATERIALS AND METHODS The antinociceptive and diuretic actions of ECE (10-200 mg/kg p.o.) were assessed with the acetic acid-induced writhing test and by using metabolic cages to house mice, respectively. The in vitro anti-inflammatory actions of ECE (1-500 μg/ml) were evaluated using LPS-stimulated primary murine macrophages, and the in vivo anti-inflammatory actions were assessed using the TPA-induced ear edema test (2 mg/ear) and carrageenan-induced paw edema test (50-200 mg/kg p.o.). The production of inflammatory mediators was estimated using in vitro and in vivo assays. RESULTS ECE lacked antinociceptive and diuretic effects. ECE increased the production of IL-10 in LPS-stimulated macrophages (EC50 = 37.8 pg/ml) and the carrageenan-induced paw edema test (ED50 = 82.6 mg/kg). ECE showed similar in vivo anti-inflammatory actions compared to those observed with indomethacin. CONCLUSION ECE exerts in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects by increasing the release of IL-10.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21) serum levels are associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in HIV patients. OBJECTIVE To quantify FGF21 levels in HIV patients using antiretroviral therapy (ART) and to analyze a possible association between serum FGF21 levels and lipid profile, levels of proinflammatory cytokines, and atherogenic risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty patients with HIV infection, who received ART in a scheme consisting of Tenofovir/Emtricitabine+Lopinavir/Ritonavir, were enrolled in this study. The serum levels of FGF21, inflammatory parameters (IL-6 and IL-1β), glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin were determined at baseline and after 36 weeks of treatment. The homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and the atherogenic risk factor were also calculated. RESULTS After 36 weeks, serum FGF21 levels decreased significantly (p=0.011), whereas IL-6 levels (r=0.821, p=0.0001) and the CD4+ T cell count (r=0.446, p=0.048), showed a positive correlation with the decrease in FGF21 levels. There was an increase in total cholesterol (r=-0.483, p=0.031), LDL (r=-0.496, p=0.026), VLDL (r=-0.320, p=0.045), and the atherogenic index factor (r=-0.539, p=0.014), these values showed a negative correlation with FGF21 levels. CONCLUSION The decrease of serum FGF21 levels due to ART is associated with the alteration in lipid profile and an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. These variations are predictors of inflammatory status in HIV patients using antiretroviral therapy.

Abstract
Cuphea aequipetala Cav (Lythraceae) is an herb used in folk treatment for pain and inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory actions of an ethanol extract from the leaves and stem of Cuphea aequipetala (CAE). The antinociceptive actions of CAE (10-200 mg/kg p.o.) were assessed with the acetic acid-induced writhing, hot plate, and formalin tests. The possible mechanism of action of CAE was evaluated using inhibitors. The effects of CAE on motor coordination were assessed by the rotarod test. The in vitro anti-inflammatory actions of CAE were evaluated using LPS-stimulated primary murine macrophages, and the in vivo anti-inflammatory actions were assessed by the TPA-induced ear oedema and the carrageenan-induced paw oedema tests. The production of inflammatory mediators was estimated from both in vitro and in vivo assays. CAE showed antinociception (ED50 = 90 mg/kg) in the acetic acid test and in the second phase of the formalin test (ED50 = 158 mg/kg). Pretreatment with glibenclamide or L-NAME partially reversed the antinociception shown by the plant extract. CAE (50-200 mg/kg) did not affect motor coordination in mice. CAE increased the production of IL-10 in LPS-stimulated macrophages (EC50 = 10 pg/ml) and, in the carrageenan-induced paw oedema test (threefold increase). In conclusion, CAE induced antinociceptive effects without affecting motor coordination, probably due to the involvement of nitric oxide and ATP-sensitive K+ channels. CAE also exerts in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects by increasing the release of IL-10.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bidens odorata Cav (Asteraceae) is a medicinal plant employed for the treatment of pain, anxiety, and depression. This study aimed to evaluate some neuropharmacological effects of an ethanol extract of B. odorata (BOE) and assess its antinociceptive interaction with naproxen and paracetamol. MATERIALS AND METHODS The following neuropharmacological effects were evaluated with the ethanolic extract of B. odorata leaves (BOE) (10-200 mg/kg p.o.): the strychnine-induced-convulsion assay (anticonvulsant effect), rotarod test (locomotor activity), tail suspension test (anti-depressant-like activity), cylinder exploratory test (anxiolytic-like actions), and pentobarbital-induced sleep test (sedative effect). The interaction of the BOE-paracetamol and BOE-naproxen combinations were evaluated with the acetic acid-induced writhing test. The ED50 value of each drug was estimated and the combinations of paracetamol and naproxen with BOE were calculated. RESULTS BOE (100-200 mg/kg) showed anti-convulsant activity by increasing the latency to occurrence of strychnine-induced convulsions, antidepressant-like effects by 28% and 33%, respectively, exerted anxiolytic actions (ED50 = 125 mg/kg), but did not affect motor locomotion. The pre-treatment with 2 mg/kg flumazenil or 20 mg/kg pentylenetetrazol partially reverted the anxiolytic activity shown by BOE alone. BOE (200 mg/kg) prolonged the duration of sleep with similar effect in comparison to clonazepam (1.5 mg/kg). The combinations of BOE-paracetamol (1:1) and BOE-naproxen (1:1) showed antinociceptive synergism. CONCLUSION BOE induces sedative and anticonvulsant effects. The anxiolytic actions shown by BOE are probably induced by the participation of the GABAergic system. BOE exerts antinociceptive synergistic interaction with paracetamol and naproxen probably by the participation of nitric oxide and ATP-sensitive K+ channels, respectively.

Abstract
Senna septemtrionalis (Viv.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby (Fabaceae) is a medicinal plant used as a folk remedy for inflammation and pain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive actions of an ethanol extract of Senna septemtrionalis aerial parts (SSE). The in vitro anti-inflammatory effects of SSE were assessed using LPS-stimulated macrophages and the subsequent quantification of the levels of cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α) with ELISA kits, nitric oxide (NO), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The in vivo anti-inflammatory actions of SSE were evaluated with the TPA-induced ear oedema test and the carrageenan-induced paw oedema test. The antinociceptive actions of SSE (10-200 mg/kg p.o.) were assessed using three models: two chemical assays (formalin-induced orofacial pain and acetic acid-induced visceral pain) and one thermal assay (hot plate). SSE showed in vitro anti-inflammatory actions with IC50 values calculated as follows: 163.3 µg/ml (IL-6), 154.7 µg/ml (H2O2) and > 200 µg/ml (IL-1β, TNF-α, and NO). SSE showed also in vivo anti-inflammatory actions in the TPA test (40% of inhibition of ear oedema) and the carrageenan test (ED50 = 137.8 mg/kg p.o.). SSE induced antinociceptive activity in the formalin orofacial pain test (ED50 = 80.1 mg/kg) and the acetic acid-induced writhing test (ED50 = 110 mg/kg). SSE showed no antinociceptive actions in the hot plate assay. The pre-treatment with glibenclamide abolished the antinociceptive action shown by SSE alone. Overall, SSE exerted in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory actions, and in vivo antinociceptive effects by the possible involvement of ATP-sensitive K + channels.

Abstract
The aim was to evaluate the diuretic and neuropharmacological actions of d-pinitol and describe a possible mechanism of action. The diuretic effects of d-pinitol were evaluated using mice placed in metabolic cages. The sedative, anxiolytic-like, antidepressant-like, and anticonvulsant effects of 1-100 mg/kg d-pinitol were assessed. The possible mechanisms of action of the anxiolytic-like, antidepressant-like, and anticonvulsant effects of d-pinitol were evaluated using inhibitors. d-pinitol lacked diuretic effects. However, d-pinitol showed the highest anxiolytic-like actions (ED50 = 70 mg/kg p.o. in mice) in the cylinder exploratory test and the highest antidepressant-like activity in the forced swimming test (ED50 = 26 mg/kg p.o. in mice). d-pinitol (100 mg/kg) exerted anticonvulsant actions in the pentylenetetrazole-induced seizures test. The pre-treatment with 2 mg/kg flumazenil reverted the anxiolytic-like actions and the anticonvulsant effects of d-pinitol, whereas the pre-treatment with 1 mg/kg yohimbine and 0.05 mg/kg prazosin abolished the antidepressant effects of d-pinitol. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: d-pinitol (3-O-methyl-d-chiro-inositol) is a polyol found in many fruits, as well as in many members of the Leguminosae and Fabaceae families. The results propose that this compound could contribute in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and convulsions. The findings suggest the possible participation of the GABAergic system in the anxiolytic-like and anticonvulsant actions of d-pinitol, whereas the noradrenergic system is probably involved in the antidepressant effects of d-pinitol. This study provides new information about other pharmacological uses for d-pinitol.

Abstract
Background Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is considered an important regulator of lipid and glucose metabolism. However, the role of FGF21 in macronutrient intake and metabolic disease, particularly in pediatric population, still needs further clarification. This study aimed to evaluate the association of rs11665896 in the FGF21 gene with metabolic status and macronutrient intake in a cohort of Mexican children with obesity. Methods Eighty-four lean children and 113 children with obesity, from 8 to 11 years of age, were recruited. FGF21 rs11665896 was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Somatometric evaluations, nutrient intake, glucose, lipids, insulin and FGF21 serum levels were measured in the obesity group. Results The T allele of rs11665896 in the FGF21 gene was associated with obesity (odds ratio [OR] = 1.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.14-3.46; p = 0.0151). Subjects with obesity carrying the TT genotype consumed less lipids and more carbohydrates compared to other genotypes. Circulating FGF21 levels correlated negatively with carbohydrate intake (r = -0.232, p = 0.022) and positively with body weight (r = 0.269, p = 0.007), waist (r = 0.242, p = 0.016) and hip girth (r = 0.204, p = 0.042). FGF21 levels were lower in carriers of at least one T allele. Conclusions Genetic variants in FGF21 could influence metabolic status, food preferences and qualitative changes in nutritional behavior in children.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Ethnopharmacological relevance Senna septemtrionalis (Viv.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby (Fabaceae) is a shrub empirically used as diuretic, and for the treatment of neurological disorders. These pharmacological effects have not been previously evaluated. AIM OF THE STUDY To evaluate the diuretic and CNS effects of a standardized ethanol extract of Senna septemtrionalis aerial parts (SSE). MATERIALS AND METHODS Gas chromatography mass spectrometry was used to perform a chemical analysis with SSE. In all tests, SSE was evaluated from 10 to 100 mg/kg p.o. The diuretic activity of SSE was assessed in mice individually placed in metabolic cages. After 6 h, the urine volume and the electrolyte excretion (Na and K) were measured. The role of prostaglandins and nitric oxide was assessed administrating mice with indomethacin and N(ω)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), prior the administration of 100 mg/kg SSE. The sedative effects of SSE were analyzed with the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time test. The effects of SSE on motor coordination in mice were evaluated with the rotarod test. The antidepressant-like activity of SSE was analyzed with the forced swimming test (FST) and the tail suspension test (TST). The role of 5-HT2 receptor, α1-and α2-adrenoceptors, or muscarinic receptors was assessed administrating mice with cyproheptadine, prazosin, yohimbine, and atropine, respectively, prior the administration of 100 mg/kg SSE in the FST. The anxiolytic-like activity of SSE (10-100 mg/kg p.o.) was assessed using the light-dark test (LDB), the elevated plus maze test (EPM), the cylinder exploratory test, and the open field test (OFT). The anticonvulsant effect of SSE (1-100 mg/kg) was evaluated in mice administered with different convulsant agents: strychnine, pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), isoniazid (INH) or yohimbine. RESULTS The main compound found in SSE was D-pinitol (42.2%). SSE (100 mg/kg) increased the urinary volume (2.67-fold), as well as the excretion of Na (5.60-fold) and K (7.2-fold). The co-administration of SSE with L-NAME or indomethacin reverted the diuretic activity shown by SSE alone. SSE lacked sedative effects and did not affect motor coordination in mice. SSE (100 mg/kg) showed higher and similar antidepressant-like effect, compared to 20 mg/kg fluoxetine, in the FST and TST, respectively. The co-administration of SSE with yohimbine reverted the antidepressant-like activity shown by SSE alone. SSE (100 mg/kg) showed anxiolytic-like activity in the four models of anxiety, with similar activity with 1.5 mg/kg clonazepam. The seizure-protective effect of SSE was ED50 = 73.9 ± 8.4 mg/kg (INH) and 40.4 ± 5.2 mg/kg (yohimbine). CONCLUSION The diuretic effects of SSE involve the possible contribution of prostaglandins and nitric oxide. SSE showed moderate anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects, whereas the participation of α2-adrenoceptors is probably associated in the antidepressant-like effects of SSE.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Mexico ranks second in the world for obesity prevalence. In Mexico, obese and overweight subjects commonly seek alternative treatments for weight-loss, including the use of herbal products. AIM OF THE STUDY The main objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of self-medication with herbal products for weight-loss among overweight and obese subjects residing in four states (Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, State of Mexico, and Mexico City) from central Mexico. In addition, the factors related to self-medication among patients were studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 1404 overweight and obese subjects were interviewed. A chi-square test examined associations between socio-demographic and socio-economic information, and self-medication with herbal products for weight-loss. RESULTS The prevalence of self-medication was 42.9% among the participants who used herbal products for weight-loss. The female gender was the strongest factor (OR: 2.20 (1.75-2.77) associated with self-medication for weight-loss, followed by a low educational level (elementary and middle school) [OR: 1.80 (1.31-2.44)], and a middle-socioeconomic status [OR: 1.75 (1.21-2.52)]. The main herbal products used for weight-loss were based on: i) green tea, Camellia sinensis (12.7% of frequency), ii) aceitilla, Bidens odorata (6.6%), and iii) soybean, Glycine max (5.3%). In addition, 65% of the respondents considered herbal products ineffective for weight-loss after 6 months of use. CONCLUSION Due to the high incidence of overweight and obesity in Mexico, there is a high prevalence (42.9%) of self-medication using natural products for weight-loss, particularly in women from Central Mexico. This study indicates the important need to educate patients about the harmful effects of consuming these products.

Abstract
Salvia tiliifolia Vahl (Lamiaceae) is used for the empirical treatment of pain and inflammation. The diterpenoid tilifodiolide (TFD) was isolated from Salvia tiliifolia. The in vitro anti-inflammatory effects of TFD (0.1-200 µM) were assessed using murine macrophages stimulated with LPS and estimating the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators for 48 h. The in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of TFD was assessed using the carrageenan-induced paw edema test for 6 h. The antinociceptive effects of TFD were evaluated using the formalin test and the acetic acid induced-writhing test. The effects of TFD on locomotor activity were assessed using the open field test and the rotarod test. TFD inhibited the production of TNF-α (IC50 = 5.66 µM) and IL-6 (IC50 = 1.21 µM) in macrophages. TFD (200 mg/kg) showed anti-inflammatory effects with similar activity compared to 10 mg/kg indomethacin. The administration of TFD induced antinociception in the phase 1 (ED50 = 48.2 mg/kg) and the phase 2 (ED50 = 28.9 mg/kg) of the formalin test. In the acetic acid assay, TFD showed antinociceptive effects (ED50 = 32.3 mg/kg) with similar potency compared to naproxen (ED50 = 36.2 mg/kg). In the presence of different inhibitors in the acetic acid assay, only the co-administration of TFD and naloxone reverted the antinociceptive activity shown by TFD alone. TFD did not affect locomotor activity in mice. TFD exerts in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity and in vivo antinociceptive effects.

Abstract
Eysenhardtia polystachya is used for the empirical treatment of cancer, infections, diarrhea, inflammation, and pain. This study identified, using GC-MS, the main chemical components in an ethanol extract of E. polystachya branches and leaves (EPE) and tested its cytotoxic, antimicrobial, anti-diarrheal, anti-inflammatory, and antinociceptive effects. The in vitro and in vivo toxicity of EPE was evaluated using the comet assay in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and the acute toxicity test in mice, respectively. The cytotoxic and the antimicrobial effects were performed using the MTT assay and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test, respectively. The levels of pro-inflammatory mediators in LPS-stimulated macrophages were measured to evaluate the in vitro anti-inflammatory effects of EPE. The antidiarrheal (castor oil test, small intestine transit, and castor oil-induced enteropooling), and anti-inflammatory activities (TPA and carrageenan) of EPE were also performed. The antinociceptive actions of EPE were carried out with the following tests: acetic acid, formalin, and hot plate. The hypnotic and locomotor effects were analyzed using pentobarbital and a rotarod system, respectively. The main component in EPE was D-pinitol (26.93%). The antidiarrheal and antinociceptive effects of D-pinitol were also evaluated. EPE showed low in vitro toxicity (DNA damage in PBMC at concentrations higher than 200 µg/ml), and low in vivo toxicity (LD50 > 2000 mg/kg i.p. and p.o.). Furthermore, EPE lacked cytotoxic activity (IC50 > 300 µg/ml) on human cancer cells, but showed good antimicrobial effects in E. coli (MIC=1.56 µg/ml) and S. aureus (MIC = 0.78 µg/ml). In multi-drug resistant microorganisms, EPE showed MIC> 100 µg/ml. EPE exerted in vitro anti-inflammatory effects, mainly, by the decrease in the production of H2O2 (IC50 = 43.9 ± 3.8 µg/ml), and IL-6 (73.3 ± 6.9 µg/ml). EPE (ED50 =7.5 ± 0.9 mg/kg) and D-pinitol (ED50 = 0.1 ± 0.03 mg/kg) showed antidiarrheal activity, and antinociceptive effects in the acetic acid test with ED50 = 117 ± 14.5 mg/kg for EPE and 33 ± 3.2 mg/kg for D-pinitol. EPE showed also antinociceptive activity in the phase 2 of the formalin test (ED50 = 48.9 ± 3.9 mg/kg), without inducing hypnotic effects or altering the locomotor activity in mice. The results here presented corroborate the folk medicinal use of Eysenhardtia polystachya in the treatment of infections, diarrhea, inflammation, and pain. D-pinitol, the main metabolite of EPE, showed antinociceptive and antidiarrheal effects with similar potency compared to standard drugs.

Abstract
Soulattrolide is a natural coumarin synthesized by the leaves of species of Calophyllum (Calophyllaceae) rain forest trees, including the American C. brasiliense, and the Asian C. teysmanii. Soulattrolide is a potent inhibitor of the reverse transcriptase from HIV-1 (RT-HIV-1), and active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, the effects of this coumarins on other systems, remains to be evaluated. C. brasiliense is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of pain and inflammation. Therefore, we decided to explore the antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory activity of soulattrolide in mice, as well as, some of its possible effects on the CNS. Soulattrolide showed antinociceptive effects in the writhing test (ED50 = 33.8 mg/kg), as well as, in the formalin test with an ED50 = 7.9, and 22.1 mg/kg for Phases 1 and 2, respectively. The highest dose of soulattrolide (50 mg/kg) induced 40% of antinociception in the hot plate test. Regarding to anti-inflammatory activity, in the 12-O-Tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) test, soulattrolide showed an IC50 = 1.81 μmol/ear, whereas in the myeloperoxidase assay, it showed an inhibition of 87% (1 μmol/ear). Soulattrolide showed sedative effects on the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time test, and the rotarod test, but lacked antidepressant activity on the tail suspension test. In conclusion, we report for the first time, the antinociceptive effects of soulattrolide in mice, like those of naproxen; soulattrolide also showed mild anti-inflammatory activity, as well as mild sedative and anxiolytic properties, therefore, it has also activity on the CNS.

Abstract
The modular protecting-group-free total synthesis of 3-methylkealiiquinone, an analogue of the marine alkaloid kealiiquinone, was accomplished in seven steps. A regioselectively constructed functionalized arylbenzimidazolone moiety and dimethyl squarate were used as the only two building blocks. A thermal ring expansion via 6π-conrotatory ring closure to build the quinone fragment gave rise to the desired linear analogue of the natural compound along with a nondescribed structurally attractive angular naphtho[1,2- d]imidazole regioisomer. The IC50 values for the compounds were determined on three cancer cell lines.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Celtis pallida Torr (Cannabaceae) is employed as a folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation, pain, skin infections, and diarrhea, among other diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY The purpose of this work was to assess the chemical composition, the in vitro and in vivo toxicity, the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrheal, antinociceptive, locomotor, and sedative effects of an ethanolic extract obtained from Celtis pallida aerial parts (CPE). MATERIALS AND METHODS The composition of CPE was carried out by GC-MS. The in vitro and in vivo toxic activity of CPE was estimated with the comet assay (10-1000 µg/ml) for 5 h in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and the acute toxicity test (500-5000 mg/kg p.o.), for 14 days, respectively. The antimicrobial effect of CPE was evaluated using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay, whereas the antidiarrheal activity (10-200 mg/kg p.o.) was calculated using the castor oil test. The antinociceptive effects of CPE (50-200 mg/kg p.o.) were estimated with the acetic acid and formalin tests, as well as the hot plate test. The sedative and locomotor activities of CPE (50-200 mg/kg p.o.) were assessed with the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time test and the rotarod test, respectively. RESULTS The main compound found in CPE was the triterpene ursolic acid (22% of the extract). CPE at concentrations of 100 µg/ml or higher induced genotoxicity in vitro and showed low in vivo toxicity (LD50 > 5000 mg/kg p.o.). Additionally, CPE lacked (MIC > 400 µg/ml) antimicrobial activity but exerts antinociceptive (ED50 = 12.5 ± 1.5 mg/kg) and antidiarrheal effects (ED50 = 2.8 mg/kg), without inducing sedative effects or altering the locomotor activity. The antinociceptive activity of CPE suggests the participation of adrenoceptors, as well as the nitric oxide/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway. CONCLUSION C. pallida exerts its antinociceptive effects probably mediated by the nitric oxide/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway.

Abstract
CONTEXT Gymnosperma glutinosum (Spreng.) Less. (Asteraceae) is a bush used for the empirical treatment of pain, fever, and cancer. An ent-neo-clerodane diterpene (2-angeloyl ent-dihydrotumanoic acid; ADTA) was isolated from G. glutinosum. OBJECTIVE This study evaluates the cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, and antinociceptive effects of ADTA. MATERIALS AND METHODS The cytotoxic effects of ADTA (1-350 μM) were evaluated using the MTT assay with human tumorigenic (SW-620, MDA-MB231, SKLU1, SiHa, and PC-3), and non-tumorigenic (HaCaT) cells for 48 h. The in vitro anti-inflammatory effects of ADTA (0.23-460 μM) were assessed using murine peritoneal macrophages stimulated with LPS and estimating the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators for 48 h. The antinociceptive effects of ADTA (25-100 mg/kg p.o.) were evaluated using two in vivo models of chemical-induced nociception during 1 h. RESULTS ADTA lacked cytotoxic activity (IC50> 100 μM) on tumorigenic cells. In non-tumorigenic cells (HaCaT), ADTA exerted low cytotoxic effects (IC50 = 273 μM). ADTA, at concentrations of 115 μM or higher, decreased the release of pro-inflammatory mediators. The maximum antinociceptive effects of ADTA in the acetic acid-induced abdominal constrictions by ADTA was found at 100 mg/kg (63%), whereas in the formalin test at phase 1 and phase 2, ADTA (100 mg/kg) decreased the licking time by 47 and 71%, respectively. CONCLUSION The results indicate that ADTA, obtained from G. glutinosum, exerts moderate in vitro anti-inflammatory and in vivo antinociceptive effects, but lacks cytotoxic effects on human cancer cells.

Abstract
Preclinical Research The diterpene ent-dihydrotumanoic acid (DTA) was among the compounds isolated from Gymnosperma glutinosum (Spreng) Less (Asteraceae). There are no reports regarding the pharmacological effects of DTA. Cytotoxicity against cancer cells (1-250 µM), and the antibacterial (50-1400 µM) activity of DTA were evaluated using the MTT assay, and the minimum inhibitory concentration test, respectively. The antidiarrheal (1-100 mg/kg p.o.) and anti-inflammatory (2 mg/ear) effects of DTA were evaluated using castor oil and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate, respectively. The antinociceptive and sedative effects of DTA (1-100 mg/kg p.o.) were evaluated using two models of chemically-induced nociception, and the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time test, respectively. The antinociceptive mechanism of DTA was evaluated using the acetic acid writhing test with inhibitors related to pain processing pathways. The effects of DTA (10-100 mg/kg p.o.) on locomotor activity were evaluated using the rotarod test. DTA lacked cytotoxic activity (IC50 > 100 µM) on cancer cells, possessed moderate antibacterial effects against B. subtillis (MIC= 175 µM), moderate antidiarrheal and anti-inflammatory effects, and minimal vasorelaxant effects. In the formalin test, DTA showed antinociceptive effects in both phases. In the acetic acid test, DTA showed antinociceptive activity (ED50 = 50.2 ± 5.6 mg/kg) with potency similar to that of naproxen (NPX; ED50 =33.7 ± 4.5 mg/kg) an effect blocked by naloxone implicating an opioid mechanism. Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The use of medicinal plants in Mexico has been documented since pre-Hispanic times. Nevertheless, the level of use of medicinal plants by health professionals in Mexico remains to be explored. AIM OF THE STUDY To evaluate the use, acceptance and prescription of medicinal plants by health professionals in 9 of the states of Mexico. MATERIALS AND METHODS Direct and indirect interviews, regarding the use and acceptance of medicinal plants, with health professionals (n=1614), including nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and odontologists from nine states in Mexico were performed from January 2015 to July 2016. The interviews were analyzed with the factor the informant consensus (FIC). RESULTS The information obtained indicated that 46% of those interviewed feel patients should not use medicinal plants as an alternative therapy. Moreover, 54% of health professionals, and 49% of the physicians have used medicinal plants as an alternative therapy for several diseases. Twenty eight percent of health professionals, and 26% of the physicians, have recommended or prescribed medicinal plants to their patients, whereas 73% of health professionals were in agreement with receiving academic information regarding the use and prescription of medicinal plants. A total of 77 plant species used for medicinal purposes, belonging to 40 botanical families were reported by the interviewed. The results of the FIC showed that the categories of diseases of the digestive system (FIC=0.901) and diseases of the respiratory system (FIC=0.898) had the greatest agreement. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that medicinal plants are used for primary health care in Mexico by health professionals.

Abstract
Preclinical Research Krameria cytisoides is used for the treatment of inflammation, stomach pain, and gastric ulcers. The active ingredient from this plant is a peroxide, kramecyne (KACY) which has anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activities of KACY in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced systemic chronic inflammation in mice for 60 days, using dexamethasone (DEX) as the positive control, vehicle (the LPS group) as the negative control and the control group (mice without inflammation). KACY did not affect survival, body weight or relative organ weight in mice but it: decreased nitric oxide (NO) production by 68%; prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ) by 67%; increased release of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 (2.0-fold), and reduced production of the proinflammatory cytokines, IL-6 (2.0-fold), IL-1β (2.4-fold), and TNF-α (2.0-fold). Furthermore, the gastroprotective effects of KACY in mice were evaluated in an ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model. The results showed that KACY at 50 and 100 mg/kg exerted gastroprotective effects with similar activity to 50 mg/kg ranitidine. In gastric tissues, KACY decreased the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) but increased the catalase (CAT) activity. KACY have potential for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases due its similar activity to that of DEX. It also has gastroprotective effects.

Abstract
A literature review was undertaken by analyzing distinguished books, undergraduate and postgraduate theses, and peer-reviewed scientific articles and by consulting worldwide accepted scientific databases, such as SCOPUS, Web of Science, SCIELO, Medline, and Google Scholar. Medicinal plants used as immunostimulants were classified into two categories: (1) plants with pharmacological studies and (2) plants without pharmacological research. Medicinal plants with pharmacological studies of their immunostimulatory properties were subclassified into four groups as follows: (a) plant extracts evaluated for in vitro effects, (b) plant extracts with documented in vivo effects, (c) active compounds tested on in vitro studies, and (d) active compounds assayed in animal models. Pharmacological studies have been conducted on 29 of the plants, including extracts and compounds, whereas 75 plants lack pharmacological studies regarding their immunostimulatory activity. Medicinal plants were experimentally studied in vitro (19 plants) and in vivo (8 plants). A total of 12 compounds isolated from medicinal plants used as immunostimulants have been tested using in vitro (11 compounds) and in vivo (2 compounds) assays. This review clearly indicates the need to perform scientific studies with medicinal flora from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, to obtain new immunostimulatory agents.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Costus pulverulentus C. Presl (Costaceae), a species endemic to Mexico, is used for the empirical treatment of cancer, pain, and inflammation. AIM OF THE STUDY The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxicity, as well as the cytotoxic, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and sedative effects of an ethanol extract from Costus pulverulentus stem (CPE). MATERIALS AND METHODS The chemical characterization of CPE was performed by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The toxicity of CPE was evaluated using the comet assay (10-1000 µg/ml during 5h) and the acute toxicity test (500-5000 mg/kg p.o. and i.p. during 14 days). The cytotoxic effect of CPE (1-250 µg/ml) on human cancer cells was evaluated using the MTT assay. The antinociceptive effects of CPE (50-200mg/kg p.o.) were evaluated using thermal-induced nociception tests (hot plate and tail flick) and the chemical-induced nociceptive tests (acetic acid and formalin). The sedative activity of CPE (50-200mg/kg p.o.) was evaluated using the ketamine-induced sleeping time test. RESULTS CPE showed the presence of compounds such as campesterol, stigmasterol β-sitosterol, vanillic acid, among others. In the comet assay, CPE at 200 µg/ml or higher concentrations induced DNA damage. In the acute toxicity test, the LD50 estimated for CPE was>5000 mg/kg p.o. or i.p. CEP showed moderate cytotoxic effects on prostate carcinoma cells PC-3 cells (IC50=179 ± 23.2 µg/ml). In the chemical-induced nociception models, CPE (100 and 200mg/kg p.o.) showed antinociceptive effects with similar activity to 100mg/kg naproxen. In the thermal-induced nociception tests, CPE tested at 200mg/kg showed moderate antinociceptive effects by 28% (hot plate test) and by 25% (tail flick test). In the ketamine-induced sleeping time test, CPE showed no sedative effects. CONCLUSIONS C. pulverulents exerts moderate cytotoxic effects in human cancer cells, moderate anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects. C. pulverulentus induces antinociceptive effects without inducing sedation.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Obesity is a worldwide medical concern. New ethnobotanical information regarding the antiobesity effect of medicinal plants has been obtained in the last 30 years in response to socio-demographic changes and high-fat diets became common. AIM OF THE STUDY This review provides a summary of medicinal plants used in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean for the empirical treatment of obesity in terms of ethnobotany, toxicity, pharmacology, conservation status, trade and chemistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bibliographic investigation was performed by analyzing recognized books, undergraduate and postgraduate theses and peer-reviewed scientific articles, consulting worldwide accepted scientific databases from the last four decades. Medicinal plants used for the treatment of obesity were classified in two categories: (1) plants with pharmacological evidence and (2) plants without pharmacological evidence. RESULTS A total of 139 plant species, belonging to 61 families, native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean that are used for the empirical treatment of obesity were recorded. From these plants, 33 were investigated in scientific studies, and 106 plants lacked scientific investigation. Medicinal plants were experimentally studied in vitro (21 plants) and in vivo (16 plants). A total of 4 compounds isolated from medicinal plants used for the empirical treatment of obesity have been tested in vitro (2 compounds) and in vivo (4 compounds) studies. No clinical trials on obese subjects (BMI>30 kg/m(2)) have been performed using the medicinal plants cited in this review. There are no herbal-based products approved in Mexico for the treatment of obesity. CONCLUSIONS There are a limited number of scientific studies published on medicinal plants from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean used for the treatment of obesity. This review highlights the need to perform pharmacological, phytochemical, toxicological and ethnobotanical studies with medicinal flora to obtain new antiobesity agents.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive (acute assays) and anti-inflammatory (chronic assays) effects of kramecyne (KACY), a peroxide isolated from Krameria cytisoides. MAIN METHODS The antinociceptive activity of KACY was evaluated using the hot plate, acetic acid and formalin tests. The effects of KACY on heat-induced hemolysis in rat erythrocytes were also evaluated. The in vivo anti-inflammatory assays were performed using the chronic TPA (12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate) method to induce ear edema and carrageenan-kaolin induced arthritis (CKIA). In the CKIA model, the hot plate test was performed, serum samples were obtained for the quantitation of pro-inflammatory (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12 and TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory (IL-4 and IL-10) cytokines. KEY FINDINGS KACY possess antinociceptive effects with comparable activity to naproxen (NPX). KACY inhibited hemolysis (EC50 = 180 μg/mL), in comparison to the untreated group and with a higher potency than NPX (EC50 = 263 μg/mL). KACY at 50 mg/kg decreased inflammation by 38% (chronic TPA-induced edema model) and by 26% (CKIA model), in comparison with the vehicle group and with similar activity to the positive controls 8 mg/kg indomethacin (IND) and 1 mg/kg methotrexate (MTX), respectively. In the CKIA model, KACY increased the release of anti-inflammatory (IL-4 and IL-10) cytokines but reduced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12 and TNF-α). KACY at 50 and 100 mg/kg showed antinociceptive effects by 27% and 23%, respectively, in mice with mono-arthritis. SIGNIFICANCE KACY might be a good alternative for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) due its antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities.

Abstract
Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is a proven modulator of adipose metabolism, but the mechanisms by which this cytokine affects the development and function of adipose tissue have not been fully elucidated to date. Using differential display analysis, in this study, we demonstrate that gene expression of the serine protease inhibitor A3g (SerpinA3g) is specifically induced in 3T3-F442A preadipocytes by TNF-α but not by other adipogenic inhibitors, such as retinoic acid (RA) or transforming growth factor type beta (TGF-β). The specific induction of SerpinA3g by TNF-α was confirmed by RT-PCR in both preadipose and terminally differentiated 3T3-F442A cells. The knockdown of SerpinA3g using small interfering RNA prevented the antiadipogenesis elicited by TNF-α in 3T3-F442A cells but not the antiadipogenesis induced by RA or TGF-β. SerpinA3g-silenced 3T3-F442A cells also did not display TNF-α-induced insulin resistance. Our results demonstrate that SerpinA3g is specifically induced by TNF-α in 3T3-F442A cells, regardless of their stage of differentiation, and participates in the antiadipogenesis and insulin resistance induced by this cytokine. Our results suggest that SerpinA3g plays a role in the TNF-α modulation of adipose tissue development and metabolism. Additional studies are warranted regarding the mechanisms mediating adipose SerpinA3g effects.

Abstract
CONTEXT Cancer prevention remains a high priority for the scientific world. Magnolia dealbata Zucc (Magnoliaceae), a Mexican endemic species, is used for the empirical treatment of cancer. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the cytotoxic and cancer chemopreventive effects of an ethanol extract of Magnolia dealbata seeds (MDE). MATERIALS AND METHODS The cytotoxic effect of MDE, at concentrations ranging from 1 to 200 µg/ml, on human cancer cells and human nontumorigenic cells was evaluated using the MTT assay for 48 h. The apoptotic activities of MDE 25 μg/ml on MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells were evaluated using the TUNEL assay and the detection of caspase 3 using immunofluorescence analysis for 48 h, each. The chemopreventive effect was evaluated by administrating different doses of MDE, between 1 and 50 mg/kg, injected intraperitoneally daily into athymic mice which were implanted with MDA-MB231 cells during 28 days. The growth and weight of tumors were measured. RESULTS MDE showed cytotoxic effects on MDA-MB231 cells (IC₅₀ = 25 µg/ml) and exerted pro-apoptotic activities as determined by DNA fragmentation in MDA-MB231 cells. MDE 25 µg/ml also induces the activation of caspase 3 in MDA-MB231 cells. These results suggest that Magnolia dealbata may be an optimal source of the bioactive compounds: honokiol (HK) and magnolol (MG). MDE 50 mg/kg i.p. exerted chemopreventive effects by inhibiting the growth of MDA-MB231 tumor by 75% in athymic mice, compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS MDE exerts cytotoxic, apoptotic and chemopreventive activities on MDA-MB231 human cancer cells.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Ibervillea sonorae (S. Watson) Greene (Cucurbitaceae), a plant used for the empirical treatment of type 2 diabetes in México, exerts antidiabetic effects on animal models but its mechanism of action remains unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the antidiabetic mechanism of an Ibervillea sonorae aqueous extract (ISE). MATERIALS AND METHODS Non-toxic ISE concentrations were assayed on the glucose uptake by insulin-sensitive and insulin-resistant murine and human cultured adipocytes, both in the absence or the presence of insulin signaling pathway inhibitors, and on murine and human adipogenesis. Chemical composition of ISE was examined by spectrophotometric and HPLC techniques. RESULTS ISE stimulated the 2-NBDGlucose uptake by mature adipocytes in a concentration-dependent manner. ISE 50 µg/ml induced the 2-NBDG uptake in insulin-sensitive 3T3-F442A, 3T3-L1 and human adipocytes by 100%, 63% and 33%, compared to insulin control. Inhibitors for the insulin receptor, PI3K, AKT and GLUT4 blocked the 2-NBDG uptake in murine cells, but human adipocytes were insensitive to the PI3K inhibitor Wortmannin. ISE 50 µg/ml also stimulated the 2-NBDG uptake in insulin-resistant adipocytes by 117% (3T3-F442A), 83% (3T3-L1) and 48% (human). ISE induced 3T3-F442A adipogenesis but lacked proadipogenic effects on 3T3-L1 and human preadipocytes. Chemical analyses showed the presence of phenolics in ISE, mainly an appreciable concentration of gallic acid. CONCLUSION Ibervillea sonorae exerts its antidiabetic properties by means of hydrosoluble compounds stimulating the glucose uptake in human preadipocytes by a PI3K-independent pathway and without proadipogenic effects.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Mexico has great biodiversity of fauna. The use of fauna with medicinal properties is a common practice since pre-Hispanic times. In the last decade, there has been an interest in ethnozoological studies in Mexico. Therefore, more studies are needed in order to gather information regarding the use of fauna with medicinal properties in México. Ethnozoological studies are necessary in order to discover new medications for human health. This review presents current information in terms of ethnozoological, conservation status, trade, toxicological and pharmacological effects of fauna used for medicinal purposes in Mexican traditional medicine (MTM), based on scientific literature. Future prospects for research with medicinal fauna are discussed. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bibliographic investigation was carried out by analyzing recognized books and peer-reviewed papers, consulting worldwide accepted scientific databases from the last five decades. Reports included in this review complied with the three criteria cited as follows: (i) used in Mexican traditional medicine for medicinal and/or magical-religious purposes, (ii) with experimental studies regarding the toxicological or medicinal effects and/or with studies exploring mechanisms of medicinal effects, and (iii) with information obtained from a clear source. RESULTS A total of 163 animal species, belonging to 79 families and 4 taxonomic categories, used for medicinal purposes are reported in this review. Medicinal fauna used in MTM come from birds (48), fishes (3), insects (22), mammals (49) and reptiles (41). The most versatile species which had the greatest number of medicinal properties were Mephitis macroura (21 uses), Crotalus atrox (17 uses), Dasypus novemcinctus (13 uses) and Didelphis virginiana (13 uses). However, 14 of the 161 species listed in this review are classified as endangered. Animal species are mainly used for the treatment of inflammatory, respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. Furthermore, insects and reptiles are the animal groups with more pharmacological studies. Approximately, 11% and 5% of medicinal fauna have been tested in terms of their pharmacological and toxicological effects, respectively. CONCLUSION Despite the use of medicinal fauna in MTM, during centuries, there are a very limited number of scientific studies published on this topic. This review highlights the need to perform pharmacological, toxicological and chemical studies with medicinal fauna used in MTM.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE Medicinal plants have been used for centuries for the empirical treatment of many diseases. This study documented the use of plant species in traditional medicine in the municipality of Xalpatlahuac, Guerrero, México. MATERIALS AND METHODS Direct interviews were performed with inhabitants from Xalpatlahuac. The interviews were analyzed with two quantitative tools: (a) the informant consensus factor (ICF) that estimates the level of agreement about which medicinal plants may be used for each category and (b) the relative importance (RI) that determines the extent of potential utilization of each species. RESULTS A total of 67 plant species with medicinal purposes, belonging to 36 families and used to treat 55 illnesses and 3 cultural filiations were reported by interviewees. Nineteen mixtures with medicinal plants were reported by the interviewers. Mentha piperita was the most used plant for combinations (4 mixtures). The results of the ICF showed that diseases of the respiratory and digestive systems had the greatest agreement. The most versatile species according to their RI are Marrubium vulgare, Mimosa albida and Psidium guajava.. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that plant species play an important role in healing practices and magical-religious rituals among inhabitants from Xalpatlahuac, Guerrero, Mexico. Furthermore, pharmacological, phytochemical and toxicological studies with medicinal flora, including mixtures, are required for the experimental validation of their traditional uses.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Justicia spicigera is a plant used as immunostimulatory in Mexican traditional medicine. Recently, we showed that Justicia spicigera extracts exerted immunostimulatory effects and the major component of this extract was kaempferitrin (KM). This work shows a correlation between the medical traditional use of Justicia spicigera and kaempferitrin, its active compound. MATERIALS AND METHODS The in vitro immunostimulatory effects of KM were evaluated on the proliferation of murine splenocytes and macrophages, and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The effects of KM on NO production, lysosomal enzyme activity and neutral red uptake were assayed in murine macrophages RAW 264.7. The effects of KM on the NK cell activity were also assayed. RESULTS KM at 25μM, the highest concentration tested, increased the proliferation of murine macrophages (23%) and splenocytes (17%), and human PBMC (24%) in the absence of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), compared to untreated cells. KM also stimulated the pinocytosis (25%) and lysosomal enzyme activity (57%) in murine macrophages with a similar potency than LPS 1μg/ml. In addition, KM induced the NK cell activity (11%). CONCLUSION KM exerts immunostimulatory effects on immune responses mediated by splenocytes, macrophages, PBMC and NK cells.

Abstract
The removal from the solution and the accumulation of As, Cd and Cr by Typha latifolia was studied. Small plants of T. latifolia, collected from a non-contaminated site, were exposed to individual concentrations of As, Cd and Cr for 10 days. The ability of T. latifolia for the removal of toxic elements ranged from 23% to 54% for As, 43%-55% for Cd and 28%-73% for Cr. The accumulation of toxic elements in T. latifolia occurred mainly in the roots. The results suggest that T. latifolia can be considered as an interesting alternative for treating aquatic effluents polluted with toxic trace elements.
