Abstract
It is uncertain how the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology transforms industrial work. We address this question from the perspective of cognitive systems, which, in this case, includes considerations of AI and process transparency, resilience, division of labor, and worker skills. We draw from a case study on glass tempering that includes a machine-vision-based quality control system and an advanced automation process control system. Based on task analysis and background literature, we develop the concept of hybrid intelligence that implies balanced AI transparency that supports upskilling and resilience. So-called fragmented intelligence, in turn, may result from the combination of the complexity of advanced automation along with the complexity of the process physics that places critical emphasis on expert knowledge. This combination can result in the so-called "double black box effect", given that designing for understandability for the line workers might not be feasible: expert networks are needed for resilience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early life farm exposures have been shown to decrease the risk of allergic diseases. Dendritic cells (DCs) may mediate asthma-protective effect of farm exposures as they play an important role in the development of immunity and tolerance. Our aim was to investigate whether the numbers and phenotypes of circulating DCs at age 6 are associated with farming, asthma, and atopy in a selected sample of French and Finnish children from the PASTURE study. METHODS We studied 82 farm and 86 nonfarm children with and without asthma. Using flow cytometry, BDCA1+ CD11c+ myeloid DC1s (mDC1), BDCA3+(high) mDC2s and BDCA2+ plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) were identified and expressions of CD86, immunoglobulin-like transcript 3 (ILT3) and ILT4 were analyzed. Questionnaires were used to assess prenatal and lifetime patterns of farm exposures and to define asthma. Atopic sensitization was defined by specific IgE measurements. RESULTS The percentage of mDC2 cells was lower in farm children (0.033 ± 0.001) than in nonfarm children (0.042 ± 0.001; P = 0.008). Similar associations were found between mDC2 percentage and prenatal (P = 0.02) and lifetime exposure to farm milk (P = 0.03) and stables (P = 0.003), but these associations were not independent from farming. Asthma was positively associated with ILT4 + mDCs (P = 0.04) and negatively with CD86 + pDCs (P = 0.048) but only in nonfarm children. CONCLUSIONS Inverse association between farm exposure and mDC2 percentage suggest that this DC subset may play a role in farm-related immunoregulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the associations between clinical obstetric factors during birth and doctor-diagnosed wheezing and allergic sensitization during early childhood. METHODS We followed 410 Finnish women from late pregnancy until 18 months age of their children. All children were delivered at term. Doctor-diagnosed wheezing among children was established by questionnaires, while specific immunoglobulin E antibodies to inhalant and food allergens were measured in 388 children at 1 year of age. Data on maternal obstetric variables were recorded at the time of delivery. RESULTS Children of mothers with longer duration of ruptured fetal membranes before birth had significantly higher risk of doctor-diagnosed wheezing during early childhood compared to those children with shorter period of ruptured fetal membranes (III vs I quartile; aOR 6.65, 95% CI 1.99-22.18; P < 0.002 and IV vs I quartile; aOR 3.88, 95% CI 1.05-14.36, P < 0.043). Children who were born by Cesarean delivery had significantly less allergic sensitization at the age of 1 year compared to those who were born by vaginal route (16.0%vs 32.2%; aOR 0.34, 95% CI 0.14-0.80; P < 0.013). Furthermore, allergic sensitization tended to be more common in children with longer duration of labor before birth. No other birth-related obstetric factors, such as induction, the type of fetal membrane rupture during birth or quality of amniotic fluid were associated significantly with the examined outcomes. CONCLUSION The longer duration of the ruptured fetal membranes possibly reflected the higher risk of intrapartum infection at birth, and further increased the risk of doctor-diagnosed wheezing among offspring.

Abstract
In the present study, immunologically naive rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were experimentally exposed to a low-level Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda) infection to stimulate acquired resistance and, along with unexposed controls, were subsequently exposed to natural infection for 8 weeks. The priming of the host resistance, designed to simulate a procedure applicable in aquaculture, decreased the number of establishing parasites compared to untreated controls by the end of the experiment. This effect was slow and did not protect the fish against the parasite-induced cataracts. The results suggest that this type of priming of host resistance is probably inefficient in preventing the deleterious effects of D. spathaceum infection in aquaculture conditions.

Abstract
After priming with two intramuscular doses of MF59-adjuvanted (Sub/MF59) or split influenza vaccines during the 2006/07 season, 89 healthy children received a third booster dose of the respective vaccine (2007/08 Northern Hemisphere formulation) approximately 1 year later, and were followed up for 6 months post-third injection. Immunogenicity was evaluated on 81 of them by a hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay before and 3 weeks after vaccination. The Sub/MF59 influenza vaccine was safe and well tolerated following the booster vaccination. Pre-booster HI antibody titers were consistently higher in the Sub/MF59 group than in the comparator group, confirming significantly longer persistence of antibodies after priming with Sub/MF59 vaccine. Post-booster immune responses were significantly higher in the Sub/MF59 group compared with the split group, especially vs. the influenza B strain, which is epidemiologically relevant in the pediatric population. Altogether, these data further support the potential use of MF59-adjuvanted influenza vaccine as a safe and highly immunogenic influenza vaccine for young children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to assess the efficacy of the oral live attenuated human rotavirus vaccine Rotarix (RIX4414) for prevention of rotavirus gastroenteritis in European infants during their first 2 years of life. METHODS 3994 study participants were enrolled from six countries and were randomly assigned two oral doses of either RIX4414 (n=2646) or placebo (n=1348), which were coadministered with the first two doses of specific childhood vaccinations. Follow-up for gastroenteritis episodes was undertaken from 2 weeks post-dose two through the two consecutive rotavirus seasons following vaccinations (combined efficacy follow-up period; mean duration 17 months [SD 1.6]). Our primary endpoint was vaccine efficacy against rotavirus gastroenteritis of any severity during the first efficacy follow-up period (2 weeks post-dose two to the end of the first rotavirus season). Stool specimens obtained during gastroenteritis episodes were tested for rotavirus by ELISA and typed by RT-PCR. Episodes scoring 11 or greater on the 20-point Vesikari scale were classified as severe. Analysis was according to protocol. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00140686 (eTrack102247). FINDINGS 120 infants were excluded from the according-to-protocol analysis. During the first efficacy follow-up period (mean duration 5.7 months [SD 1.2]), 24 of 2572 infants allocated RIX4414 versus 94 of 1302 given placebo had rotavirus gastroenteritis episodes of any severity, resulting in a vaccine efficacy of 87.1% (95% CI 79.6-92.1; p<0.0001). For the combined efficacy follow-up period, vaccine efficacy against severe rotavirus gastroenteritis was 90.4% (85.1-94.1; p<0.0001), for admission owing to rotavirus gastroenteritis 96.0% (83.8-99.5; p<0.0001), and for rotavirus-related medical attention 83.8% (76.8-88.9; p<0.0001), and significant protection against severe rotavirus gastroenteritis by circulating G1, G2, G3, G4, and G9 rotavirus types was shown. INTERPRETATION In a European setting, two doses of RIX4414 coadministered with childhood vaccines provided high protection against any and severe rotavirus gastroenteritis, with an overall reduction of admissions for gastroenteritis over two consecutive rotavirus epidemic seasons.

Abstract
SUMMARYMonogenean communities of fish have generally been considered non-interactive as negative interspecific interactions have rarely been reported. Most of the earlier studies on monogenean communities, however, have been conducted not only in systems with relatively low parasite abundances but, more importantly, at study scales where microhabitat-level interactions between the parasites are easily overlooked. We examined the communities of 3 abundant Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) species on the gills of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) by analysing the interactions at the scale of individual gill filaments, where interactions between the species, if any, should most likely take place. Contrary to our expectations, we did not find evidence for competitive exclusion between the species, which suggests that monogenean communities are non-interactive even in high parasite abundances. At the species level, individual parasites were highly aggregated within the filaments, essentially showing a strong tendency to occur at either end of a filament. This, together with the result of differences in the distribution of juvenile parasites within the filaments compared to adults, suggests that these parasites are able to actively seek out their conspecifics in small-scale microhabitats during maturation, which again could enhance their mate-finding.

Abstract
The link between climate changes and disease risks from various pathogens has been increasingly recognized. The effect of climatic factors on host-parasite population dynamics is particularly evident in northern latitudes where the occurrence and transmission of parasites are strongly regulated by seasonality-driven changes in environmental temperatures. Shortened winter periods would increase growth potential of many parasite populations. The ways in which climate warming could affect life history dynamics of the directly transmitted crustacean ectoparasite Argulus coregoni and complex life cycle trematode Diplostomum spathaceum, which frequently cause problems in northern fish farming, are discussed. Increased problems for fish farming are predicted in terms of increased infection pressure from these parasites in future. This would increase problems associated with infections and increase the use of expensive management protocols with high environmental impact.

Abstract
Although parasite communities have been studied extensively in recent years, spatial and temporal variation in factors affecting the communities has received less attention. This paper examined the similarity of parasite assemblages of perch (Perca fluviatilis) in 18 locations within a single lake in relation to geographical distance and temporal dynamics in the host and parasite populations. We expected that in the present study-scale where distinct but potentially interacting host subpopulations could occur, similarity of the assemblages could be affected by seasonal dynamics in host movements particularly during the spawning period. Parasite species showed differences in infection levels between the sampling locations and similarity of the assemblages of autogenic parasite species in winter, measured inversely as difference in parasite numbers, was negatively affected by geographical distance between the locations. However, no such relationship was observed in the allogenic species Ichthyocotylurus variegata. Furthermore, no relationship was found either in autogenic parasites when the locations were re-sampled in summer, after the spawning period of perch. We concluded that the effect of geographical distance on the similarity of parasite assemblages is a dynamic process, which is affected by seasonal dynamics in host and parasite populations.

Abstract
Parasite life-cycles present intriguing model systems to study divergence in resource use and ecology between parasite taxa. In ecologically similar taxa, consistent selective forces may lead to convergence of life-history traits, but resource overlap and similarity of life-cycles may also promote divergence between the taxa in (1) use of host species or (2) specific niche within a host. We studied the life-history characteristics of 2 sympatric species of Diplostomum parasites, D. spathaceum and D. gasterostei, concentrating particularly on differences in intermediate host use and characteristics of the infective stages between the species. This group of trematodes is a notoriously difficult challenge for morphological taxonomy and therefore any information on the ecology of these species can also be helpful in resolving their taxonomy. We observed that these species indeed had diverged as they used mainly different snail and fish species as intermediate hosts and in controlled experiments infected different regions of the eye (lens and vitreous body) of a novel fish host. Interestingly, cercarial characteristics (activity and life-span) were similar between the species and the species were difficult to separate at the cercarial stage unless one observes their swimming behaviour. The release of cercaria from the snail hosts was higher in D. spathaceum, but when cercarial numbers were proportioned to the volume of the snail host, the production was higher in D. gasterostei suggesting differences in the rate of snail host exploitation between the parasite species. These results corroborate the prediction that closely related parasite taxa which are competing for the same resources should have diverged in their life-history characteristics and host use.

Abstract
Host manipulation by trophically transmitted parasites may predispose infected hosts to predation and in this way enhance parasite transmission. In most study systems, however, the evidence comes from laboratory studies, and therefore knowledge of the effect of manipulation on parasite transmission efficiency in the wild is still limited. Here we examined the effect ofDiplostomum spathaceum(Trematoda) eye flukes on the susceptibility of fish intermediate hosts to predation by bird definitive hosts. Our earlier studies have shown that the parasite alters fish phenotype and increases their susceptibility to artificial predation under laboratory conditions. In the present field study, we allowed wild birds to feed on fish from cages placed into a lake, and found that predation vulnerability of infected fish did not differ from that of controls. However, we suggest that the experimental set-up likely affected the result because the cages allowed gulls, which caught most of the fish in the study, to feed on fish in an easy, unnatural manner by standing on the edges of the cages. Nevertheless, considerable predation was observed, which provides important initial evidence of how this question should be addressed in the wild.

Abstract
This paper investigated the intestinal distribution and fecundity of 2 species ofDiplostomumparasites,D. spathaceumandD. pseudospathaceum, in 2 species of definitive hosts, herring gull (Larus argentatus) and common gull (L. canus), using both empirical field data and experimental infections. At the level of individual hosts, the parasite species occupied different parts within the intestine, but the fecundity of the worms, measured as the number of eggs in the uterus, did not differ between the parasite species except in wild common gulls. Interestingly, egg numbers in individual hosts were positively correlated between the parasite species suggesting that some birds provided better resources for the parasite species. At the host population level, fecundity of the worms did not differ between the host species or between adult birds and chicks. Both parasite species were also aggregated to the same host individuals and it is likely that aggregation is transferred to gulls from fish intermediate hosts. Individual differences in suitability and parasite numbers between hosts provide important grounds and implications for epidemiological model-based parasite prevention strategies.

Abstract
Aggregation is one of the distinctive features in parasite-host relationships, which has generally been studied at the level of host communities. Parasite aggregation at the infracommunity level may nevertheless be important for intraspecific interactions such as parasite mating success and opportunities for cross-fertilization. In the present paper, we studied the infracommunity aggregation of 3 highly abundantDactylogyrus(Monogenea) species occurring on the gills of crucian carp (Carassius carassius). In line with the previous work on monogenean communities, we observed no competition between the species. At the species level, parasites were distributed unevenly on the gills showing aggregation in the majority of infracommunities. However, aggregation decreased with increasing parasite abundance, which supports the hypothesis that less aggregation may be needed to ensure successful mating when the distance to a potential mate decreases with increasing number of conspecifics. Lack of interspecific interactions, species specific site selection and the importance of study scale for aggregation patterns in dactylogyrids are discussed.

Abstract
Recent studies on parasite communities have considered the factors which contribute to variability in parasite infections among populations of one host species. This paper examined parasite assemblages of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) in a natural set-up of two distinctive environments inhabited by the same host species and differing in respect to composition of other fish species: ponds, where extreme conditions prevent other fish species from occurring and lakes, where crucian carp coexist with other fish species. Our aim was to evaluate the significance of parasite exchange, environmental conditions and host suitability for the depauperate parasite assemblages observed in pond crucian carp. As predicted, crucian carp had more diverse parasite species composition in lakes, which supports the hypotheses of increased opportunities for parasite exchange with other fish species and better environmental conditions for the parasites. However, for instance, diplostomids were found only from few fish individuals in very low numbers. Experimental exposure trials with the eye fluke Diplostomum spathaceum in the laboratory indicated that crucian carp were totally resistant to infection, which is exceptional and suggests that the low number of these parasites in crucian carp was due to physiological unsuitability of the host. To obtain a better understanding on the mechanisms underlying the formation of parasite assemblages in these fish, further studies on the relationships between the unique physiology of crucian carp and infection success by other parasite species are needed.

Abstract
We examined the parasite-induced cataract formation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) using slit-lamp microscopy to determine the relationship between cataract intensity and number of Diplostomum spathaceum parasites that were established in the lens. Cataract intensity increased significantly with parasite burden, but was also affected by the pattern of exposure to the parasite cercariae. The slit-lamp methodology proved useful in scoring the cataracts since it provides a 3-dimensional view into the lens and gives an actual picture of the location and intensity of the cataracts, which allows detailed investigations of mechanisms underlying cataract formation in various fish species. Potential applications of the method in fish farming and parasitological studies are discussed.

Abstract
This paper examines the efficiency of acquired resistance in protecting the fish host, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), against the trematode parasite Diplostomum spathaceum, and the hypothesis that fish recognize areas where infective stages are aggregated and show avoidance behaviour. We found that when fish with a low level of infection were held in restricted cages in natural conditions they became infected and developed cataracts as a result of this infection. This suggests that acquired resistance is insufficient in protecting fish against the parasite or the deleterious effects of infection in conditions where fish could not avoid the parasite. Behavioural experiments in the laboratory showed that fish reacted to the parasite cercariae by avoiding the infection source, which decreased the rate of parasite establishment. We conclude that by using a combination of behavioural avoidance and physiological resistance, fish could defend against the parasite more effectively.

Abstract
A live attenuated human rotavirus (HRV) vaccine, strain RIX4414, was tested sequentially in adults, previously infected toddlers, and previously uninfected infants. A single dose was given to adults and toddlers and found well tolerated. Next, a dose ranging (three different viral concentrations) safety and immunogenicity study was conducted in rotavirus IgA antibody negative infants (N= 192), who received two doses of RIX4414 vaccine or placebo at 2 and 4 months of age. No side effects were seen after vaccination. Specifically, administration of RIX4414 vaccine was not temporally associated with fever, diarrhea, or increase in liver transaminases. Rotavirus IgA seroconversion ranged from 50 to 88% after one dose and from 73 to 96% after two doses, depending on vaccine titer. After the first dose, on days 7-9 post vaccination, between 38 and 60% of the infants shed the vaccine virus, whereas after the second dose only 0 to 13% of the vaccinees shed the vaccine virus. It is concluded that RIX4414 strain HRV vaccine is virtually non-reactogenic and, at high titer, highly immunogenic in susceptible infants.

Abstract
In the production of the infective cercariae of trematodes, the terminal investment hypothesis of life-history theory predicts that the rate of host exploitation and cercarial production should increase during the period of cercarial shedding since the reproductive value of the parasite decreases during this period. In contrast, a bet hedging hypothesis that focuses on the success of transmission when host contact rate is variable predicts that cercarial production should decrease in an attempt to keep the host alive for longer and thus would increase the probability of successful transmission. We examined these two hypotheses under laboratory conditions and recorded the production ofDiplostomum spathaceumcercariae from naturally infected snail hosts,Lymnaea stagnalis. The average number of cercariae produced per day decreased as the snail host approached death counter to the terminal investment hypothesis. The finding supports the prediction of the bet hedging hypothesis and implies that the pattern of cercarial production may be explained by reduced virulence of the parasite within the snails to ensure extended total production time of cercariae. Nevertheless, survival of infected snails was still lower than uninfected snails suggesting that ultimately the infection still increased snail mortality rate. Cercarial production varied between days but was not cyclic, probably because of the physiology of the sporocysts within snails. Fewer cercariae were released at night, which may increase transmission efficiency to diurnally-active fish hosts. The mechanisms associated with daily cercarial production are discussed.

Abstract
Colour changes in two salmonid fish, the salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (S. trutta), were examined in relation to infection with the trematode Diplostomum spathaceum. This parasite had no effect on the rate of colour change in these fish, although species specific differences in colour adjustment times were observed. Increasing asymmetry in parasite numbers between the right and left eye, which could lead to the retention of vision in one eye, nevertheless tended to reduce the colour change time in salmon with moderate infection (P=0.08). This first experimental attempt to examine colour changes in fish in relation to eye fluke infections provides grounds for future investigations. The darker appearance of the heavily infected fish described in the literature suggests that a high parasite burden actually causes colour changes. We emphasise that detailed quantitative studies using fish with higher parasite loads, especially from the tail of the aggregated parasite distribution, are needed to describe these relationships in detail.

Abstract
The transmission dynamics of the cercariae of Diplostomum spathaceum were investigated under laboratory conditions using cercariae collected from naturally infected Lymnaea stagnalis. Cercariae were kept in a constant temperature of 20 degrees C and the survival and infectivity to naïve young rainbow trout recorded at 3-h intervals until few cercariae were alive. Mortality initially remained constant but increased rapidly after 20 h. While a model of constant mortality fitted the survival data, an age-dependent model provided a better fit and implied that cercariae tended to carry similar quantities of resources and once these were exhausted the cercariae died. Cercarial infectivity also showed an age-dependent pattern although infectivity tended (P = 0.09) to increase with age over the first 6 h of life and then fall. The per capita transmission rate of cercariae was investigated by experimentally infecting rainbow trout under standardized conditions, first with an increasing cercarial density and second, by keeping density constant but increasing numbers of cercariae. The per capita transmission rate was frequency dependent and averaged 0.341/h (+/- 0.036).
