Abstract
Aging, often considered a result of random cellular damage, can be accurately estimated using DNA methylation profiles, the foundation of pan-tissue epigenetic clocks. Here, we demonstrate the development of universal pan-mammalian clocks, using 11,754 methylation arrays from our Mammalian Methylation Consortium, which encompass 59 tissue types across 185 mammalian species. These predictive models estimate mammalian tissue age with high accuracy (r > 0.96). Age deviations correlate with human mortality risk, mouse somatotropic axis mutations and caloric restriction. We identified specific cytosines with methylation levels that change with age across numerous species. These sites, highly enriched in polycomb repressive complex 2-binding locations, are near genes implicated in mammalian development, cancer, obesity and longevity. Our findings offer new evidence suggesting that aging is evolutionarily conserved and intertwined with developmental processes across all mammals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To describe the effect of mechanical ventilation on diaphragm mitochondrial oxygen consumption, ATP production, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and cytochrome c oxidase activity and content, and their relationship to diaphragm strength in an experimental model of sepsis. METHODS A cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) protocol was performed in 12 rats while 12 controls underwent sham operation. Half of the rats in each group were paralyzed and mechanically ventilated. We performed blood gas analysis and lactic acid assays 6 h after surgery. Afterwards, we measured diaphragm strength and mitochondrial oxygen consumption, ATP and ROS generation, and cytochrome c oxidase activity. We also measured malondialdehyde (MDA) content as an index of lipid peroxidation, and mRNA expression of the proinflammatory interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in diaphragms. RESULTS CLP rats showed severe hypotension, metabolic acidosis, and upregulation of diaphragm IL-1β mRNA expression. Compared to sham controls, spontaneously breathing CLP rats showed lower diaphragm force and increased susceptibility to fatigue, along with depressed mitochondrial oxygen consumption and ATP production and cytochrome c oxidase activity. These rats also showed increased mitochondrial ROS generation and MDA content. Mechanical ventilation markedly restored mitochondrial oxygen consumption and ATP production in CLP rats; lowered mitochondrial ROS production by the complex 3; and preserved cytochrome c oxidase activity. CONCLUSION In an experimental model of sepsis, early initiation of mechanical ventilation restores diaphragm mitochondrial function.

Abstract
According to the principle of allocation, trade-offs are inevitable when resources allocated to one biological function are no longer available for other functions. Growth, and to a lesser extent, immunity are energetically costly functions that may compete with allocation to reproductive success and survival. However, whether high allocation to growth impairs immune system development during the growing period or immune system performance during adulthood is currently unknown in wild mammals. Using three roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) populations experiencing contrasting environmental conditions, we tested for potential costs of growth on immune phenotype over both the short-term (during growth), and the long-term (during adulthood) over the course of an individuals' life. We investigated potential costs on a set of 12 immune traits that reflect both innate and adaptive responses, and compared them between sexes and populations. Although fast growth tended to be associated with low levels of some humoral traits (globulins) during the growing period and some cellular immune traits (i.e. eosinophil and neutrophil counts) during adulthood, evidence for a trade-off between growth and other immune components was limited. Unexpectedly, no detectable growth costs on immunity were found in females from the population experiencing the least favourable environment. We discuss our findings in the light of the complex interplay between resource allocation strategies among reproduction, maintenance and immunity, in relation to local environmental conditions experienced by roe deer.

Abstract
In animals, physiological mechanisms underlying reproductive and actuarial senescence remain poorly understood. Immunosenescence, the decline in the ability to display an efficient immune response with increasing age, is likely to influence both reproductive and actuarial senescence through increased risk of disease. Evidence for such a link has been reported from laboratory animal models but has been poorly investigated in the wild, where variation in resource acquisitions usually drives life-history trade-offs. We investigated immunosenescence patterns over 7 years in both sexes of two contrasting roe deer populations (Capreolus capreolus). We first measured twelve immune markers to obtain a thorough identification of innate and adaptive components of immunity and assessed, from the same individuals, the age-dependent variation observed in parasitic infections. Although the level of innate traits was maintained at old age, the functional innate immune traits declined with increasing age in one of two populations. In both populations, the production of inflammatory markers increased with advancing age. Finally, the adaptive response declined in late adulthood. The increasing parasite burden with age we reported suggests the effective existence of immunosenescence. Age-specific patterns differed between populations but not between sexes, which indicate that habitat quality could shape age-dependent immune phenotype in the wild.

Abstract
Livestock contributes significantly to the world economy. However, animal diseases and food safety are still major constraints on livestock-sector productivity, economic growth, the reduction of poverty and food security. Efficient and effective governance of Veterinary Services throughout the world is a fundamental requirement for addressing the global animal health and related public health threats. Recent work by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) through the application of the Tool for the Evaluation of Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS Tool) and related Gap Analysis (both of which form part of the PVS Pathway) has indicated that a significant proportion of the national Veterinary Services worldwide do not meet the essential requirements for good governance. This shortcoming poses a significant risk for many developing countries and their trading partners when considered in the context of the growing trade in animal-source foods, and the burgeoning global livestock population. Well-managed, transparent and credible Veterinary Services, in both the public and private sector, are essential for mitigating animal disease risks and ensuring sustainable incomes for vulnerable producers. They are also vital for limiting the public health risks posed by zoonotic diseases. This paper is intended to highlight the impact of governance on the delivery of veterinary services in a development context and the benefits generated by improving veterinary governance. It recognises 'global public good' elements embedded in the good governance of Veterinary Services, and it could also provide an operational development investment roadmap that builds on the OIE PVS Pathway, and innovative financing options based on government commitments supported by donor programmes.

Abstract
Animal construction allows organisms to cope with environmental variations but the physiological costs of such behaviour are still poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to measure the physiological cost of construction behaviour through the oxidative balance that is known to affect the ability of organs to function, stimulates senescence processes and ultimately impacts the fitness of the organism. We used larvae of caddisfly, Limnephilus rhombicus, by experimentally modifying the effort associated with case building. Larvae that were forced to build a new case showed a significant increase in both total antioxidant capacity and the specific activity of superoxide dismutase 48 and 72 h, respectively, after the initiation of the reconstruction. These results strongly suggest that the larval construction behaviour triggered the production of reactive oxygen species, but their effects were reversed 7 days after the reconstruction. In the animals that were forced to build a new case, oxidative stress appeared to be mitigated by a network of antioxidant defences because no oxidative damage was observed in proteins compared with the control larvae. At the adult stage, while longevity was not sex dependent and was not affected by the treatment, body mass and body size of adult males from the reconstruction treatment were significantly lower than the control values. This unexpected sex effect together with data on oxidative stress highlights the difficulty of determining the physiological cost associated with energy-demanding behaviours, implying a consideration of both their energetic and non-energetic components is required.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The goals of this study were to establish the occupational outcome after surgery in patients with a rotator cuff tear from a work-related injury (WRI) or occupational disease (OD) and determine which factors and conditions affected return to work. HYPOTHESIS return to work was possible for this type of patient. This questionnaire-based study comprised 262 shoulders in 254 patients with a WRI/OD who had surgery performed on their shoulder between 2000 and 2005. The average age was 50.5 ± 6.4 years. The following variables were analysed: employment status (private sector, self-employed, government employee), type of work (non-manual, manual, heavy manual labour), nature of tendon injury and surgical technique (open, mini-open and arthroscopy). Return to work occurred in 59.5% of the cases. Factors that prevented return to work (40.4% of the cases) included retirement (14.1%), an unrelated medical condition (10.3%), and the outcome of the operated shoulder (16.0%). Age had an impact on return to work (P<5 × 10(-4)). The type of work and nature of tendon injury did not affect return to work, but did affect time away from work. Employment status and surgical technique had an effect on return to work, but not on time away from work. Age was a decisive factor for return to work. Retirement seemed to be the most common choice starting at 55 years of age. Arthroscopy seemed to have reduced the impact of the WRI on the results, particularly on the time away from work. A preoperative evaluation of the patient's probability of returning to work should be done based on occupational and injury features. There may be a longer delay in returning to work for certain profiles of work (manual labour) and tendon injury. Patient management can be improved by knowing the factors and conditions that influence return to work. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level IV - Retrospective study.

Abstract
We investigated changes in the rate of oxygen consumption (V O2) and body temperature of wild king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) in different nutritional conditions during recovery after exposure to cold water. Over time, birds undertook an identical experiment three times, each characterized by different nutritional conditions: (1) having recently completed a foraging trip, (2) after fasting for many days, and (3) having been refed one meal after the fast. The experiments consisted of a 2-h session in a water channel followed by a period of recovery in a respirometer chamber on land. Refed birds recovered significantly more quickly than fed birds, in terms of both time to reach resting V O2 on land and time to reach recovery of lower abdominal temperature. Previous work found that when penguins are in cold water, abdominal temperatures decrease less in refed birds than in fed or fasted birds, suggesting that refed birds may be vasoconstricting the periphery while perfusing the gut region to access nutrients. This, alongside an increased resting [V O2], seems the most reasonable explanation for why refed birds recovered more quickly subsequent to cold-water exposure in this study; that is, vasoconstriction of the insulative periphery meant that they lost less heat generated by the body core.

Abstract
Augmented reality (AR) refers to the introduction of virtual elements in the real world. That is, the person is seeing an image composed of a visualization of the real world, and a series of virtual elements that, at that same moment, are super-imposed on the real world. The most important aspect of AR is that the virtual elements supply to the person relevant and useful information that is not contained in the real world. AR has notable potential, and has already been used in diverse fields, such as medicine, the army, coaching, engineering, design, and robotics. Until now, AR has never been used in the scope of psychological treatment. Nevertheless, AR presents various advantages. Just like in the classical systems of virtual reality, it is possible to have total control over the virtual elements that are super-imposed on the real world, and how one interacts with those elements. AR could involve additional advantages; on one side it could be less expensive since it also uses the real world (this does not need to be modeled), and it could facilitate the feeling of presence (the sensation of being there), and reality judgment (the fact of judging the experience as real) of the person since the environment he or she is in, and what he or she is seeing is, in fact the "reality." In this paper, we present the data of the first case study in which AR has been used for the treatment of a specific phobia, cockroaches phobia. It addresses a system of AR that permits exposure to virtual cockroaches super-imposed on the real world. In order to carry out the exposure, the guidelines of Ost with respect to "one-session treatment" were followed. The results are promising. The participant demonstrated notable fear and avoidance in the behavioral avoidance test before the treatment, and not only was an important decrease in the scores of fear and avoidance observed after the treatment, but also the participant was capable of approaching, interacting, and killing live cockroaches immediately following the treatment. The results are maintained in a follow-up conducted 1 month after the termination of the treatment.

Abstract
The present study is designed to test the role of immersion and media content in the sense of presence. Specifically, we are interested in the affective valence of the virtual environments. This paper describes an experiment that compares three immersive systems (a PC monitor, a rear projected video wall, and a head-mounted display) and two virtual environments, one involving emotional content and the other not. The purpose of the experiment was to test the interactive role of these two media characteristics (form and content). Scores on two self-report presence measurements were compared among six groups of 10 people each. The results suggest that both immersion and affective content have an impact on presence. However, immersion was more relevant for non-emotional environments than for emotional ones.

Abstract
In the Swiss army instructors and fortifications guards are exposed to firearms' noise which harms the ear. It was investigated whether the decline in the cases of acute acoustic traumas in non-professional soldiers serving in the army from 1987 to 1996 also was detectable in army instructors and fortifications guards (professional soldiers) and whether these persons were wearing hearing aids (as an indicator of hearing loss) more often than the average of the male Swiss population. First, we analyzed a historical time series of the incidence density of acute acoustic traumas in non-professional soldiers as well as in army instructors and fortifications guards. Second, we compared the prevalence rate of wearing a hearing aid in army instructors and fortifications guards with the male Swiss population. The incidence density for acute acoustic traumas in army instructors and fortifications guards observed over ten years showed no significant change whereas among non-professional soldiers a strong decline (-12% per year) was observed. The prevalence rate of wearing a hearing aid in army instructors and fortifications guards was significantly higher (RR 3.91 [95% CI 3.09-4.96]) than in the male Swiss population. These results suggest increased hearing impairment among army instructors and fortifications guards which is probably due to the high exposure to impulse noise events (occupational disease). It is recommended that these persons be subjected to a compulsory prevention program.

Abstract
Alpha2 adrenoceptor antagonists have been shown to reverse D2-antagonist-induced catalepsy leading to the hypothesis that the alpha2 antagonistic properties of clozapine underlie the compound's lack of extrapyramidal symptoms in the clinic. The potential for alpha2 antagonists to reverse the motor deficits produced by D2 antagonists (loxapine and haloperidol) was further investigated using a rotating rod (3.5 rpm) test in male Sprague-Dawley rats that requires coordinated movement to perform the task. The effects of loxapine (0.3 mg/kg, s.c.) were dose-dependently and statistically significantly reversed by the administration of clozapine (1,3, 10 mg/kg, i.p., n=10). Isoloxapine (1 mg/kg, i.p.), RX 821002 (2-methoxy-idazoxan; 5.6 mg/kg, i.p.) and yohimbine (5.6 mg/kg, i.p.) did not reverse the effects of loxapine. Furthermore, the motor deficits produced by haloperidol could not be reversed by RX 821002 (5.6 mg/kg, i.p.) or yohimbine (5.6 mg/kg, i.p.). On the other hand, scopolamine (0.03-0.3 mg/kg, i.p.) dose-dependently and statistically significantly antagonised the effects of both loxapine and haloperidol. These results indicate that the anticholinergic rather than the alpha2 antagonistic properties of clozapine may mediate the reversal of the motor deficit induced by D2 antagonism in a rotating rod test.

Abstract
78 patients in whom the cause of a monoarticular arthritis remained unclear after an initial workup were contacted for a follow-up interview (and an additional clinical examination in 64 cases) after 6 to 11 years (mean 8 years). The mean age at the onset of symptoms was 39 years, with 51% of the patients presenting in the range between 20 and 40 years. There was a slight male preponderance (56%). Large joints, mainly the knee, and less often the wrist, ankle or hip, were affected in 79%. Finger, toe and other small joints were involved in only 21%. During the course of the disease 14% of the cases developed arthritis in other joints. At the time of follow-up an etiologic or nosologic diagnosis was possible only in 5%: 1 infectious Pneumococcus pneumoniae arthritis, 1 Lyme arthritis (Borrelia burgdorferi), 1 gouty arthritis and 1 erosive seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. 95% of all cases remained unclear. However, 91% of all patients became free of symptoms after 6 years. The remaining patients (9%) suffered from arthralgia of undetermined origin (n = 5), from nonclassified destructive coxitis with consecutive development of unclear gonarthritis (n = 1), or from erosive seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (n = 1). 10 patients (13%) underwent a total of 16 invasive procedures related to their arthritis, such as synoviorthesis, synovectomy or arthrodesis. The result of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate had no influence on the outcome. The following conclusions are offered: monoarticular arthritis initially should prompt a thorough investigation in order to exclude infectious or metabolic etiologies for their destructive potential.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Therapy of rheumatoid arthritis requires a treatment plan which coordinates the different therapeutic measures within the framework of a long-term strategy. By detailed information the patient is to be gained for cooperation in the fight against the disease. Physiotherapy and a daily home program represent an important part of the treatment. Other decisive measures are ergotherapy, counselling on resources, prescription of splints, counselling on shoes, matching of walking aids, and sociomedical counselling. The treatment of the patient in a well coordinated team offers optimal conditions for therapeutic success.

Abstract
This review on non-estrogen measures against postmenopausal osteoporosis first deals with primary prevention in young women, such as calcium rich nutrition and physical training in sedentary young women. For the case of acute osteoporotic vertebral fracture, analgetic, physiotherapeutic and ergonomic measures are highlighted. A more profound discussion covers those possible measures against established osteoporosis, which have been evaluated in prospective controlled trials: calcium, Vitamin-D, fluorides, bisphosphonates, calcitonin, anabolic steroids and exercise. From the currently available studies, the following against established osteoporosis are preferred: Nutrition counselling, motivation for physical exercise and back schooling are sensible in every case. All the other possible interventions, however, are not yet sufficiently substantiated for routine prescription in every case, whether due to lack of proof efficacy for possible adverse side effects, disproportionate costs or other reasons. Thus, for the time being, calcium supplements, Vitamin-D, fluorides, bisphosphonates, calcitonin and anabolic steroids should be reserved for selected, defined cases or for properly controlled prospective studies.

Abstract
The extent and duration of sympathetic and sensory blockade were compared in 13 patients after spinal anaesthesia with 0.5% tetracaine (20 mg) in either isobaric (n = 6) or hyperbaric solution (n = 7). Sensory blockade was assessed by pin-prick and sympathetic blockade by the sympathogalvanometric method respectively at L5/S1, L2, T8 and C8/T1 levels. The time to onset and the duration of sensory or sympathetic blockade was identical. The mean extent of sympathetic blockade was 6 segments greater than that of sensory blockade. Hypotension was related to the extent of sensory but not sympathetic blockade. This study confirms that sympathetic blockade is more extended than sensory blockade during spinal anesthesia but does not allow to predict the occurrence of hypotension.

Abstract
The effect of lumbar epidural anesthesia on myocardial wall motion was compared in two groups of patients using precordial two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE). All patients were scheduled to undergo lower abdominal or peripheral surgery. Group 1 included five healthy ASA PS 1 subjects and group 2 included 10 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). In all patients 12.5 ml of 2% lidocaine HCl was injected into the lumbar epidural space, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and heart rate were continuously monitored. 2DE evaluation was performed before and at 10, 20, 30, and 60 min (T10-T60) after epidural lidocaine injection. The left ventricular wall was divided into 16 segments for parasternal long-axis, short-axis and apical four-chamber views. The wall motion of each segment was graded on a scale from 1 (dyskinesia) to 6 (hyperkinesia), with 5 representing normal motion. A decrease in segmental wall motion greater than or equal to 2 grades was considered indicative of ischemia. Plasma lidocaine and catecholamine levels were measured before and 10, 20, and 60 min after epidural lidocaine injection. Peak plasma lidocaine levels in groups 1 and 2 were 2.79 +/- 1.06 micrograms/ml (mean +/- SD) and 2.58 +/- 1.48 micrograms/ml at 10 min, respectively (NS). Plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine levels were unchanged from baseline. Systolic pressures decreased significantly in group 2 from T10 to T60. Diastolic pressure decreased significantly in the same group from T20 to T60, and in group 1 only at T10. Abstract
A study was carried out to compare the evolution of arterial blood pressure during carotid endarterectomy performed under either general anaesthesia (GA) or cervical epidural anaesthesia (CEA). 20 patients were randomly assigned to two equal groups. In the CEA group, 15 ml of 0.375% bupivacaine and 150 micrograms fentanyl were injected into the epidural space at C7-D1 level. In the GA group, patients were anaesthetized with 0.2 mg.kg-1 flunitrazepam and 5 micrograms.kg-1 fentanyl; intubation was carried out using 0.08 mg.kg-1 vecuronium, and the patients were ventilated with a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen (50% of each). Further injections, every 30 min, of 2 micrograms.kg-1 fentanyl were given to the patients in group GA. Blood pressure was monitored continuously, up to 4 h postoperatively, with a radial arterial catheter. Per- or postoperative hypertension was defined as a rise in systolic arterial blood pressure (Pasys) over 180 mmHg for greater than 3 min; this was treated with 20 mg nifedipine intranasally (group CEA) or 100 micrograms fentanyl with 0.5 mg flunitrazepam with or without nifedipine (group GA). Per- or postoperative hypotension was defined as a fall in Pasys below 100 mmHg and or a 30% fall in mean arterial blood pressure for greater than 3 min; this was treated, in both groups, with an intravenous bolus of 3 mg ephedrine. Abstract
After having studied nine observations about patients referred to them for embolectomy under CEC on suspicion of massive pulmonary embolism, the authors describe five differential diagnosis and how they can be reached. A low central venous pressure, an hypoxaemia sensitive to oxygenotherapy, a high pulmonary wedge pressure or the lack of diastolocapillary gradient, and, last of all, a real hypocoagulability attained by the use of low and daily doses of heparin must make one cautious. Yet, if a doubt should persist, an angiography and/or a scintigraphy will be asked for.
