Abstract
Searches for the lepton number violating K^{+}→π^{-}μ^{+}e^{+} decay and the lepton flavor violating K^{+}→π^{+}μ^{-}e^{+} and π^{0}→μ^{-}e^{+} decays are reported using data collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017-2018. No evidence for these decays is found and upper limits of the branching ratios are obtained at 90% confidence level: B(K^{+}→π^{-}μ^{+}e^{+})<4.2×10^{-11}, B(K^{+}→π^{+}μ^{-}e^{+})<6.6×10^{-11} and B(π^{0}→μ^{-}e^{+})<3.2×10^{-10}. These results improve by 1 order of magnitude over previous results for these decay modes.

Abstract
In this paper we present new results on upper limits for the search of Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) with data collected by NA48/2 (2003-2004), NA62-RK (2007) and NA62 (2015) CERN experiments. The data collected with different trigger configuration allow to search for both long and short living heavy neutrinos in the mass range below the kaon mass. In addition the status of the search for K+ → π+vv with the NA62 detector will be briefly presented.

The burden of chronic noncommunicable diseases in undocumented migrants: a 1-year survey of drugs dispensation by a non-governmental organization in Italy. Public Health 2016; 141:26-31. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was carried out with two objectives. The first one was to have an insight into the prevalence of chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCD) in undocumented migrants, and the second one was to evaluate if differences existed among different ethnic groups. STUDY DESIGN The study is based on the collection of data on drug dispensation by a non-governmental organization (NGO) providing free medical assistance to undocumented migrants in Milan, Italy. All the prescriptions to adult subjects from January 1 to December 31 2014 (total 8438) were recorded and analyzed. All the data available for the patients receiving prescriptions (age, gender and country of birth) were also collected in anonymous form. Ethical approval for the study was given by the Ethics Committee of the NGO. METHODS Drugs were grouped according to the anatomical therapeutic chemical (ATC) classification and their quantities expressed as daily defined doses (DDDs)/1000 patients/day. The 56 ATC levels were divided into three groups according to their use for acute, chronic, or both acute and chronic diseases. The statistical analysis of drug dispensation was performed for the whole population and for the five ethnic groups into which it had been divided. RESULTS Prescription of medicines for chronic conditions was significantly greater than for acute (154.2 ± 45.9 vs 51.3 ± 18.4 DDD/1000 patients/day, P < 0.02) and for both acute and chronic conditions (57.9 ± 12.8 DDD/1000 patients/day, P < 0.02). Five ATC classes accounted for 60% of all chronic prescriptions. They were differently distributed among the five ethnic groups (e.g., Asians required more antihypertensives and antidiabetics, East Europeans required more lipid modifying drugs, antihypertensives and antithrombotics). CONCLUSIONS Our data show an important use of medicines for chronic diseases in a population of undocumented migrants. Though with some limitations, this could be an indicator of a high prevalence of CNCD in this population, with significant differences among different ethnic groups. This situation should be considered when planning health interventions, also in consideration of the fact that it could have an impact on European Health Services in a short time.

Abstract
The analysis of a combined data set, totaling 3.6 × 10(14) stopped muons on target, in the search for the lepton flavor violating decay μ(+) → e(+)γ is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 × 10(-13) (90% confidence level). This represents a four times more stringent limit than the previous world best limit set by MEG.

Psychiatric disorders in patients suffering from an acute cerebrovascular accident or traumatic injury, and their effects on rehabilitation: an observational study. Abstract
BACKGROUND The presence of a post-traumatic psychiatric disorder in patients with acute injuries may have adverse effects on outcomes. AIM In this study our aims were: (1) to assess the frequency of psychiatric disorders after a cerebrovascular accident or traumatic injury requiring rehabilitation; (2) to examine whether there was any correlation between psychiatric disorders and patients' baseline demographic and clinical variables. DESIGN The study consisted of two phases: the first was cross-sectional and the second prospective with a 12-month follow-up. The period of recruitment was two years. The results of the first phase are presented here. SETTING The study sample consisted of a consecutive series of patients admitted to hospital because of an acute cerebrovascular accident or a traumatic injury and referred for a rehabilitation program. Two inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals were involved in the study. POPULATION The sample consisted of 230 consecutive patients with a recent cerebrovascular accident or trauma included in a rehabilitation program. METHODS The sample included: 89 men (39%) and 141 women (61%) aged 20-97 years. Psychiatric disorders and motor disabilities were assessed through psychiatric interview and the mini-international neuropsychiatric interview plus (MINI Plus) and, respectively, with the functional independent measure (FIM). In case of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), severity was assessed through the Davidson's Trauma scale. Psychiatric disorders were correlated to demographic and clinical variables through univariate and multivariate analyses, the latter with logistic regression models. RESULTS The most frequent entry diagnoses were traumatic fracture (41.3%) and stroke (37.0%). Ninety-three patients (40.4%) had one or more psychiatric disturbances at study entry, the commonest being depression (56 cases, 24.7%) and anxiety (23 cases, 10.0%). PTSD was present in 8 cases (3.5%). A history of psychiatric disorder was reported by 55 patients (24.2%) Compared to the rest of the study population, these subjects had more psychopathologic complaints (P<0.001). Mean total FIM score was 54.4 (SD=17.8) and 61.2 (SD=19.6) in patients with and without psychopathology (P<0.01) Independent predictors of psychopathology included past psychiatric history, lower total FIM scores, and limb amputation. Depression was predicted by history of psychiatric disorders and lack of partner. CONCLUSION History of psychiatric disorders is the most relevant factor associated with psychopathology in patients with an acute cerebrovascular accident or traumatic injury, followed by lower total FIM scores, and type of pathologic event. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT The presence of psychiatric disorders may potentially influence the rehabilitation process and outcomes; thus their recognition and management are key factors during a rehabilitation program.

Abstract
We present a new result based on an analysis of the data collected by the MEG detector at the Paul Scherrer Institut in 2009 and 2010, in search of the lepton-flavor-violating decay μ(+)e(+)γ. The likelihood analysis of the combined data sample, which corresponds to a total of 1.8×10(14) muon decays, gives a 90% C.L. upper limit of 2.4×10(-12) on the branching ratio of the μ(+)→e(+)γ decay, constituting the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date.

Abstract
Evidence indicates that accumulation of excitotoxic mediators, such as glutamate, contributes to neuronal damage after an ischaemic insult. It is not clear, however, whether this accumulation is due to excess synaptic release or to impaired uptake. To test a role for synaptic release, here we investigated the neuroprotective potential of the synaptic blocker botulinum neurotoxin E (BoNT/E), that prevents vesicle fusion via the cleavage of the SNARE (soluble NSF-attachment receptor) protein SNAP-25 (synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa). Focal ischaemia was induced in vivo by infusing the potent vasoconstricting peptide endothelin-1 (ET-1) into the CA1 area of the hippocampus in adult rats; BoNT/E or vehicle were administered into the same site 20 min later. Injection of ET-1 was found to produce a transient and massive increase in glutamate release that was potently antagonized by BoNT/E. To assess whether blocking transmitter release translates into neuroprotection, the extent of the ischaemic damage was determined 24 h and 6 weeks after the insult. We found that BoNT/E administration consistently reduced the loss of CA1 pyramidal neurons at 24 h. The neuroprotective effect of BoNT/E, however, was no longer significant at 6 weeks. These data provide evidence that blockade of synaptic transmitter release delays neuronal cell death following focal brain ischaemia, and underline the importance of assessing long-term neuroprotection in experimental stroke studies.

Abstract
AIM A previous retrospective study suggested that an anemia prevention may shorten hospitalization and improve recovery, stating the usefulness of a proper therapy for preventing anemization, in order to get a better functional recovery and reduce hospitalization length. The present study analyzed the association of preoperative and postoperative hemoglobin levels with rehabilitation outcomes to check these results in the Rehabilitation Unit. METHODS The study enrolled 104 patients, 94 underwent hip replacement surgery and 10 knee replacement. Patients were functionally studied through the six-meter walking test (6MWT) at admittance and at discharge from the Rehabilitation Unit. RESULTS Preoperative hemoglobin has no correlation either with the results of WT executed at discharge nor with the improvement of it compared to the WT executed at admittance, while there is a significant relationship with the results of the WT executed at admittance. Age impacts on the result of 6MWT at admittance, on the one at discharge and on the improvement as well. CONCLUSIONS Despite movement weakening by anemization due to surgery, patients transferred to the Rehabilitation Unit after total hip- and knee replacement, are able to get a better movement performance independently on hemoglobin loss.

Abstract
We describe the case a 2-day-old female with congenital glioblastoma. Total resection was followed by adjuvant and high dose chemotherapy, as indicated by the current Italian infant protocol. The child is alive and well 18 months after diagnosis. A review of 67 selected congenital brain tumors showed the mortality rate was 82%. Even though the majority of patients had glioblastoma, only 5/67 had received adjuvant therapy. To ensure optimal outcomes, we recommend total or subtotal surgical resection, followed by adjuvant and high dose chemotherapy. Given the lack specific protocols for congenital brain tumors an international consensus seems to be needed, starting with congenital glioblastoma.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy of night-only splint wear therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS We conducted a randomized case-control trial with evaluation after three and six months of follow-up of outpatients with mild, recent onset symptoms of CTS recruited from the department clinic. Fifty patients (50 hands) were enrolled, of which 36 completed the study at 6 months. The case group utilized a thermoplastic neutral wrist splint for night-only wear. Outcome measures were instrumental parameters (sensory and motor nerve conduction velocity), symptom and function alterations (as measured by Levine's self-administered questionnaire), clinical parameters (pressure-provocative and Phalen tests). RESULTS Improvements were observed in Levine's symptom status score at the three-month (P=0.001) and the six-month (P=0.001) follow-up visits, in functional score (P=0.0001) and (P=0.0004), in median distal sensory latency (P=0.01) and (P=0.02), in pressure-provocative test outcome (P=0.01) and (P=0.003), in Phalen test outcome (P=0.04) and (P=0.05) respectively. CONCLUSION Symptom relief and neurophysiological improvement after night-only splint wear therapy lasted up to the six-month follow-up visit.

Abstract
We present a measurement of relative partial widths and decay rate CP asymmetries in K-K+ and pi(-)pi(+) decays of D0 mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. We use a sample of 2x10(5) D(*+)-->D0pi(+) (and charge conjugate) decays with the D0 decaying to K-pi(+), K-K+, and pi(-)pi(+), corresponding to 123 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No significant direct CP violation is observed. We measure Gamma(D0-->K-K+)/Gamma(D0-->K-pi(+))=0.0992+/-0.0011+/-0.0012, Gamma(D0-->pi(-)pi(+))/Gamma(D0-->K-pi(+))=0.035 94+/-0.000 54+/-0.000 40, A(CP)(K-K+)=(2.0+/-1.2+/-0.6)%, and A(CP)(pi(-)pi(+))=(1.0+/-1.3+/-0.6)%, where, in all cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract
We present a search for excited and exotic electrons (e(*)) decaying to an electron and a photon, both with high transverse momentum. We use 202 pb(-1) of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab II detector. No signal above standard model expectation is seen for associated ee(*) production. We discuss the e(*) sensitivity in the parameter space of the excited electron mass M(e(*)) and the compositeness energy scale Lambda. In the contact interaction model, we exclude 132 GeV/c(2)<M(e(*))<879 GeV/c(2) for Lambda = M(e(*)) at 95% confidence level (C.L.). In the gauge-mediated model, we exclude 126 GeV/c(2) < M(e(*)) < 430 GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. for the phenomenological coupling f/Lambda approximately 10(-2) GeV-1.

Abstract
We report the first measurements of inclusive W and Z cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for pp collisions at square root[s]=1.96 TeV, based on their decays to electrons and muons. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 72 pb(-1) recorded with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We test e-mu universality in W decays, and we measure the ratio of leptonic W and Z rates from which the leptonic branching fraction B(W-->lnu) can be extracted as well as an indirect value for the total width of the W and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, |V(cs)|.

Abstract
The standard model predictions for Wgamma and Zgamma production are tested using an integrated luminosity of 200 pb(-1) of pp collision data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross sections are measured by selecting leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, and photons with transverse energy ET>7 GeV that are well separated from leptons. The production cross sections and kinematic distributions for the Wgamma and Zgamma data are compared to SM predictions.

Abstract
We present the results of a search for doubly charged Higgs bosons (H+/-+/-) decaying to dileptons (ll(')) using approximately 240 pb(-1) of pp collision data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. In our search region, given by same-sign ll(') mass m(ll('))>80 GeV/c(2) (100 GeV/c(2) for ee channel), we observe no evidence for H+/-+/- production. We set limits on sigma(pp -->H++H---->l(+)l('+)l(-)l('-)) as a function of the mass of the H+/-+/- and the chirality of its couplings. Assuming exclusive same-sign dilepton decays, we derive lower mass limits on H(+/-+/-)(L) of 133, 136, and 115 GeV/c(2) in the ee, mumu, and emu channels, respectively, and a lower mass limit of 113 GeV/c(2) on H(+/-+/-)(R) in the mumu channel, all at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the tt production cross section using dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Using a 197+/-12 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab, we use two complementary techniques to select candidate events. We compare the number of observed events and selected kinematical distributions with the predictions of the standard model and find good agreement. The combined result of the two techniques yields a tt production cross section of 7.0(+2.4)(-2.1)(stat)+1.6-1.1(syst)+/-0.4(lum) pb.

Abstract
We report the observation of a narrow state decaying into J/psipi+pi- and produced in 220 pb(-1) of p p-bar collisions at =1.96 Tesqaure root of sV in the CDF II experiment. We observe 730+/-90 decays. The mass is measured to be 3871.3+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.4(syst) MeV/c2, with an observed width consistent with the detector resolution. This is in agreement with the recent observation by the Belle Collaboration of the X(3872) meson.

Abstract
We report on a search for B(0)(s)-->micro(+)micro(-) and B(0)(d)-->micro(+)micro(-) decays in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV using 171 pb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The decay rates of these rare processes are sensitive to contributions from physics beyond the standard model. One event survives all our selection requirements, consistent with the background expectation. We derive branching ratio limits of B(B(0)(s)-->micro(+)micro(-))<5.8x10(-7) and B(B(0)(d)-->micro(+)micro(-))<1.5x10(-7) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract
We report on measurements of differential cross sections dsigma/dp(T) for prompt charm meson production in ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using 5.8+/-0.3 pb(-1) of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region |y|</=1 in four fully reconstructed decay modes: D0-->K-pi(+), D(*+)-->D0pi(+), D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+), D(+)(s)-->phipi(+), and their charge conjugates. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to assess the rate of neuroendocrine malignancies in the gastrointestinal tract, other malignancies and mitotic processes, in type-2 diabetic patients. In particular, we tested the hypothesis that a poor metabolic control is associated with a higher rate of neoplasms and other co-morbid conditions, such as hypertension and peripheral neuropathy. METHODS Forty-one consecutive asymptomatic type-2 diabetic outpatients were followed for 8 years and clustered in 2 groups, according to disease duration, insulin need, and dose of oral antidiabetic agents. Physical examination, blood pressure measurements, and neurophysiologic studies were serially performed during the follow-up. In each subject, a general biochemistry was performed, aspecific and specific antigens (alpha-fetoprotein, carcinoembrionic-antigen and prostate specific antigen PSA and F-PSA) levels were measured, and invasive and non-invasive procedures were carried out, when necessary, to detect a neoplastic process. RESULTS The rate of malignancies and mitotic processes was significantly higher in patients with longer duration of disease and poor diabetes control (72% vs 13%, p=0.02). Hypertension (83% vs 54%) and peripheral neuropathy (67% vs 21%) were also more common in this group. CONCLUSION These data, although obtained in a relatively small population, highlight the importance of closely monitoring type-2 diabetic patients with poor diabetes control as this might be associated with the presence of malignancy or other co-morbid conditions. This may be particularly true when the poor glycemic control is characterised by a sudden onset or significant worsening despite streghtening of antidiabetic therapy.

Abstract
To reduce patients discomfort and improve reliability in pelvic floor neurophysiological studies we examined 28 normal subjects employing short monopolar electrodes. The technique proved to be reliable and less discomfort to the patient than the traditional concentric needle method. Data were tested for Gaussian distribution and tolerance limits for normality were assessed. Our data suggest that use of monopolar instead of concentric needle electrodes may be suitable for pelvic floor examination.

Abstract
Two dual-task experiments are reported bearing on the issue of slower processing time for severe chronic closed-head injury (CHI) patients compared to matched controls. In the first experiment, a classical psychological refractory period (PRP) paradigm was employed, in which two sequential stimuli, a pure tone and a colored dot, were presented at variable stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs), each associated with a distinct task. The task on the tone required a speeded vocal response based on pitch, and the task on the colored dot required a speeded manual response based on color. In the second experiment, either one or three masked letters was presented, followed by a pure tone at variable SOAs. The task on the letters required a delayed report of the letters at the end of each trial. The task on the tone required an immediate manual response based on pitch. In both experiments, both CHI patients and matched controls reported an SOA-locked slowing of the speeded response to the second stimulus, a PRP effect. The PRP effect was more substantial for CHI patients than for matched controls, suggesting that a component of the slower processing time for CHI patients was related to a selective increase in temporal demands for central processing of the stimuli.

Abstract
We studied the sensory action potentials (SAP) of median and ulnar nerves in four groups of 20-30, 30-40, 40-50 and 50-60 years old healthy subjects. In each group ten sensitive ulnar and median nerves were examined stimulating respectively V and III hand digital nerves, with two compared methods. In the former stimulus intensity was 20 mA, with a duration 0.1 msec, and SAP was recorded with averaging technique after 20 stimuli; in the latter the stimulus intensity was supra maximal (100 mA), with a duration 0.1 msec and a single SAP was recorded. The SAP's recording was performed by bipolar surface electrodes at the wrist, following conventional techniques. There was not statistically significant difference between SAP's latencies obtained with the two methods in each group, even if there was a decrease of the latency value obtained with supra maximal stimulus. Otherwise there was a statistically significant increase of SAP's amplitude obtained with supra maximal stimulus, above all in elderly people for median (p < 0.001) and ulnar (p < 0.0005) nerve.

Abstract
Analysis of T cells from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) identified a deficit in the induction of HLA Class II antigens by PHA although the proliferative response was normal and in the [3H]thymidine incorporation in autologous mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLR) with PHA-T cells as stimulators. In RA these abnormalities were more marked in patients with active disease than in those in clinical remission. The deficit of autologous MLR with PHA-T cells was more marked than that of autologous MLR with non-T cells and of allogeneic MLR. Serum from patients with SLE and with RA did not display any detectable inhibitory activity on the induction of HLA Class II antigens by PHA, on the proliferative response of lymphocytes to PHA, on autologous MLR with PHA-T cells and with non-T cells as stimulators and on allogeneic MLR. These results suggest that the abnormalities we have identified reflect an intrinsic defect of T cells.

Abstract
Small but statistically significant shifts (hysteresis) between the up (increasing tension direction) and down (decreasing tension) pCa/tension relation for several muscle types of the rabbit and rat were found. The largest shift is, at most, 0.093 p units or 60% of that reported for the barnacle muscle. The direction of shift for psoas is opposite to that for the soleus and tibialis.

Abstract
We found that adenylate cyclase activity of human erythrocytes is potentially labile during isolation of their plasmalemma. Addition of 1 mM EGTA to solution used to remove hemoglobin from lysed cells protected activity. Human erythrocyte adenylate cyclase is minimally activated by catecholamines, in the absence or presence of exogenous guanyl nucleotide, but substantially by 5'-guanylyl imidodiphosphate or sodium fluoride and concentration-dependently by Mg2+ or Mn2+. Basal catalytic activity is an age-dependent component of the human erythrocyte; 5'-guanylyl imidodiphosphate- or fluoride-activated activities decline with cellular maturation proportionally to the decrease in basal activity.

Abstract
To determine the effect of mannitol on blood viscosity, serial measurements were carried out on venous blood in patients undergoing craniotomies for intracranial aneurysms. Blood samples were drawn immediately prior to, and 30 minutes, 2, and 4 hours after administration of mannitol. Complete blood counts, serum osmolarities, and erythrocyte microsieving studies were also performed on each sample. Whole-blood viscosity decreased at 30 minutes and 2 hours, but not at 4 hours after mannitol administration. This decreased appeared at high shear rates only, where erythrocyte deformability is critical viscosity. This effect was independent of the hematocrit. Removal of mannitol from the suspension returned red cell deformability to preadministration values indicating that the increased erythrocyte deformability required the presence of mannitol and the relative hyperosmolarity induced by this agent. The reduced erythrocyte rigidity and subsequent decreased whole-blood viscosity should enhance tissue perfusion in the microcirculation.

Abstract
The wide range of values reported for activity of adenylate cyclase (AC) in human skeletal muscle prompted re-evaluation of conditions used for homogenization and assay. Adenylate cyclase activity in the same normal muscle differed with different techniques of homogenization. In pH 7.5 isotonic Tris buffer, basal and catecholamine-activated activities declined rapidly in homogenates kept at 4 degrees C. Loss of basal activity was prevented by addition of a chelator of divalent cations. Loss of response to isoproterenol was prevented by addition of guanylnucleotides. Enzyme activity was maximal at 37 degrees C and pH 7.6. Enzyme activity was lower when theophylline was used to prevent degradation of labelled 3',5' cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP) than when unlabelled cyclic AMP was used to this purpose. Basal activity increased with increased MgCl2 concentration up to 50 mmol/l, but isoproterenol-activated activity was maximal at 4 mmol/l MgCl2. AC was inhibited by exogenous adenosine, but addition of adenosine deaminase to the assay mixture did not increase AC activity. Based upon these observations, standardized procedures of homogenization and assay were devised and used to measure AC activity in muscles of boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: basal and isoproterenol-stimulated activities were abnormally low.

Abstract
The authors report a patient with systemic carnitine deficiency in which, despite restoration of normal serum carnitine level by therapy, the fatal course of the disease progressed. Postmortem studies of cardiac muscle with Oil red O failed to show lipid accumulation which was still present in muscle and liver. Carnitine level in liver was less than 10% of the controls values; total carnitine in muscle was 50% of the controls with differences in its esterification pattern; whereas the free carnitine was 1/10 of normal, the long chain esterified one was 3 times higher than the control. Heart carnitine content was normal. The authors suggest that although no therapeutic effects were detected in skeletal muscle, the normal carnitine content and the absence of lipidosis in the heart suggest that carnitine therapy may have been beneficial in our patient enabling the heart to utilize fatty acids.

Abstract
Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase activity has been measured in muscle biopsies taken from healthy controls and from cancer patients. In both groups the muscles were clinically and morphologically normal. The phosphodiesterase activity was significantly increased in muscles from cancer patients using both cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP as substrate. These findings are in line with previous reports indicating that malignancy may interfere with metabolism of the host muscular tissues, and suggest the possibility that the observed biochemical changes might be an aspect of an early muscle neurogenic involvement.

Abstract
Short-duration cooling of the nerve to the extensor digitorum longus muscle of the rat in vivo induced partially reversible denervation of the muscle and atrophy in the type 2 muscle fibers. Increases in cyclic adenosine monophosphate, cyclic guanosine monophosphate phosphodiesterase, adenylate cyclase, and guanylate cyclase were observed in the denervated muscle. Treatment with gangliosides of the bovine brain cortex seemed to improve the excitability of the surviving motor units and to encourage recovery of neuromuscular trophic control, but it did not affect the nerve conduction velocity or the contractile properties of the denervated muscle.

Abstract
A case of progressive extrinsic ophthalmoplegia associated with peripheral neuropathy and hypertriglyceridemia type IV is described. Motor and sensory conduction velocities of the spinal nerves were severely decreased, while the EMG of the facial muscles was more suggested of a myopathic disorder. Electron microscopic study of biopsies of biceps and peroneus brevis muscles disclosed many ragged red fibers, mainly type I, which contained typical abnormal mitochondria. Other fibers, all type II, contained increased amounts of glycogen between myofibrils or beneath the sarcolemmal membrane, but the mitochondria were normal. These fibers were more abundant in the peroneus brevis than in the biceps muscle. Nerve biopsy revealed marked loss of myelinated fibers, but neither mitochondrial changes nor glycogen storages were evident in Schwann's cells. Biochemical investigations confirmed the increased amount of glycogen in both muscle biopsies and revealed a decrease of guanilcyclase. Phosphorylase, phosphorylase b kinase, adenilcyclase, and carnitine concentrations were all normal. The pathogenesis of this syndrome is discussed and the relationship between mitochondrial abnormalities and glycogen accumulation in muscle tissue are considered.

Abstract
Guanylate cyclase activity has been studied in muscle of normal subjects and of patients suffering from muscular and neuromuscular diseases. In normal tissue a guanylate cyclase activity was found in both soluble and particulate fractions of homogenate. We found also that the kinetic analysis of the enzyme of soluble differed from that of particulate fraction. A decrease of guanylate cyclase activity in crude homogenate was observed in muscular dystrophies, in neuromuscular atrophies, and in inflammatory forms of muscle disease.

Abstract
Myosins isolated from individual human muscles (primarily normal muscles) were investigated with respect to their structural and catalytic properties. The results indicate unexpected elements of uniformity shared by the several myosins, such as a three-banded, electrophoretic pattern of light chains in sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) gels and a low degree of alkaline lability. The pH activity profile and the effect of KCl on myosin ATPase activities were also found to be the same for the myosins from predominantly fast (e.g., vastus lateralis and rectus abdominis) and slow (e.g,, soleus and pectoralis minor) muscles. Coelectrophoretic experiments lend further credence to the interrelationship between human myosin light chains and the light chains of rabbit fast-muscle myosin. However, several kinds of circumstantial evidence, such as that derived from the study of myosin in nemaline myopathy, suggest that one shoould exercise caution in interpreting these results. On the other hand, human muscle myosins, like those of other mammalian species, can be divided into two main categories according to the peptide composition of tryptic heavy meromyosin (HMM) and the banding pattern of light meromyosin (LMM) paracrystals. These results, which are indicative of differences in the primary structure of the heavy chains, allow us to identify these heavy chains as the main site of heterogeneity among myosins in human mucles.

Abstract
The carnitine content of the culture media for normal and pathological human muscles, including a case of systemic carnitine deficiency (SCD) was measured and the carnitine concentration was the same in all normal and pathological muscle culture media. Carnitine was never detected in growth medium. Some fibroblasts and myoblasts were filled with neutral lipids in SCD. 14C-palmitate added to the medium was incorporated by SCD fibroblasts or myoblasts to the same concentration as in normal or pathological cells. Factors other than carnitine seem to account for the lipid accumulation of SCD in cell culture.

Abstract
Two cases of systemic carnitine deficiency are described. In both patients, carnitine concentration was lower than normal in serum and muscle tissue. In the first case, the illness began at age 35; the clinical manifestations were only muscular. In the second case, the illness began in childhood; there were intermittent episodes of hepatic enlargement and coma. An excessive lipid content was present in muscle tissue, especially in type 1 fibers, of both cases, and in the liver of the second patient. Ultrastructural studies of muscle tissue revealed important changes of mitochondria. During muscular exercise, aerobic and anaerobic metabolism were investigated. For a given relative work intensity, these patients showed abnormally high blood lactic acid concentration and lactic acid/pyruvic acid ratios. These data, together with the morphological alterations observed in mitochondria, suggest an impaired function of the respiratory chain, leading to a shift of the red/ox potential of the tissue towards a non reduced state.

Abstract
A histological, histochemical and ultrastructural study of muscle tissue was performed in the parents of a patient affected by a infantile form of acid maltase deficiency (Pompe's disease). In both parents the clinical examination was normal, but serum levels of creatine kinase (CK) and aldolase were high. Histological and histochemical examination of muscle did not reveal any abnormality. Ultrastructural study showed an excess of glycogen granules below the sarcolemmal sheat and between myofibrils, often associated with clusters of mitochondria. There was no glycogen trapped in lysosomal vesicles. The mechanism of glycogen storage in Pompe's disease seems to involve an enzymatic deficiency other than acid maltase.

Abstract
Histochemical, biochemical and electromyographic studies were performed in a case of carnitine deficiency in serum and in muscle. Clinical features include proximal muscle weakness, predominant type I fiber impairment, excess of triglycerides and moderate glycogen accumulation in muscle. No abnormalities of palmityl CoA synthetase, carnitine palmityl transferase, carnitine acetyl transferase and lipase were evidenced. An interesting EMG decremental pattern was recorded. Correlations between electromyographic and biochemical findings are considered. A clinical improvement, a normal plasma carnitine level and a normal response at EMG repetitive stimulation were found after carnitine treatment.

Abstract
Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels have been measured in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with various neurological diseases. The subjects with epilepsy or cerebrovascular diseases do not show any difference from the controls. Moreover, in the CSF of patients having cerebral tumors the levels of cGMP are markedly increased. This change is in line with previous in vitro studies on the increase of cGMP during cell growth and cell proliferation showing that the role of the nucleotide is important for the control of the life cycle of the cell.

Abstract
Several reports have suggested that cylcic guanosine 3'-5' monophosphate (cGMP) and cyclic 3'-5' adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) are involved in the regulation of cellular proliferation. Following our previous reports on the cAMP system in human brain tumors, we decided to investigate the cGMP system in the same pathological tissues by studying the activity of guanylate cyclase and cGMP-phosphodiesterase (cGMP-PDE). We found that the activity of both enzymes is lower in neurinomas and glioblastomas than in meningiomas or in normal cerebral cortex. Furthermore, the subcellular distribution of guanylate cyclase in human cerebral cortex differs from that of neurinomas and glioblastomas. On the basis of such observations we have discussed the possibility that the regulatory mechanism of the enzymes related to the cyclic nucleotide metabolism is altered in brain tumors.
