Abstract
The development of van der Waals heterostructures has introduced unconventional phenomena that emerge at atomically precise interfaces. For example, interlayer excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides show intriguing optical properties at low temperatures. Here we report on room-temperature observation of interface excitons in mixed-dimensional heterostructures consisting of two-dimensional tungsten diselenide and one-dimensional carbon nanotubes. Bright emission peaks originating from the interface are identified, spanning a broad energy range within the telecommunication wavelengths. The effect of band alignment is investigated by systematically varying the nanotube bandgap, and we assign the new peaks to interface excitons as they only appear in type-II heterostructures. Room-temperature localization of low-energy interface excitons is indicated by extended lifetimes as well as small excitation saturation powers, and photon correlation measurements confirm antibunching. With mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures where band alignment can be engineered, new opportunities for quantum photonics are envisioned.

Abstract
Optical nonlinear processes are indispensable in a wide range of applications, including ultrafast lasers, microscopy, and quantum information technologies. Among the diverse nonlinear processes, second-order effects usually overwhelm the higher-order ones, except in centrosymmetric systems, where the second-order susceptibility vanishes to allow the use of the third-order nonlinearity. Here we demonstrate a hybrid photonic platform whereby the balance between second- and third-order susceptibilities can be tuned flexibly. By decorating ultra-high-Q silica microcavities with atomically thin tungsten diselenide, we observe cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency generation with continuous-wave excitation at a power level of only a few hundred microwatts. We show that the coexistence of second- and third-order nonlinearities in a single device can be achieved by carefully choosing the size and location of the two-dimensional material. Our approach can be generalized to other types of cavities, unlocking the potential of hybrid systems with controlled nonlinear susceptibilities for novel applications.

Abstract
Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection (NTM) is rare in healthy children, with lymphadenitis being the most common presentation. Immunocompromised populations are known to be at high risk, but the clinical picture of NTM infection in pediatric hematology/oncology patients is unclear. In this nationwide retrospective analysis of patients under the age of 40 treated in Japanese pediatric hematology/oncology departments who developed NTM infection between January 2010 and December 2020, 36 patients (21 patients with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and 15 nontransplant patients) were identified. Post-transplant patients were infected with NTM at 24 sites, including the lungs (n = 12), skin and soft tissues (n = 6), bloodstream (n = 4), and others (n = 2). Nine of twelve patients with pulmonary NTM infection had a history of pulmonary graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and rapid-growing mycobacteria (RGM) were isolated from five of them. In nontransplant patients, the primary diseases were acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL; n = 5), inborn errors of immunity (IEI; n = 6), and others (n = 4). All cases of ALL had bloodstream infections with RGM, whereas all cases of IEI were infected with slow-growing mycobacteria (SGM). In summary, three typical clinical scenarios for pediatric hematology/oncology patients have been established: RGM-induced pulmonary disease in patients with pulmonary GVHD, RGM bloodstream infection in patients with ALL, and SGM infection in patients with IEI. Our findings suggest that NTM must be regarded as a pathogen for infections in these high-risk patients, especially those with pulmonary GVHD, who may require active screening for NTM.

Abstract
Prompt prescription and early initiation of exercise training are essential for patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We hypothesized that cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) parameters determined the day after elective PCI during hospitalization would not differ from those obtained 1-3 weeks post-PCI in patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD). CPET was performed the day after and 1-3 weeks (13±4.6; 7-21 days) after PCI. CPET was performed with a bicycle ergometer up to the ventilatory aerobic threshold (VAT) on the day after PCI. Symptom-limited CPET was conducted 1-3 weeks after PCI. No complications arose from the tests. There were no significant differences in %VAT (next day: 88.6±16.7 vs. 1-3 weeks later: 91.4%±18.7%), the workload at the VAT (51.8±11.0 W vs. 52.9± 11.6 W), heart rate (HR) at the VAT (95.3±105 beats/min vs. 94.1±11.3 beats/min), or metabolic equivalent (METs) at the VAT (3.69±0.69 vs. 3.84±0.78) between the two sessions. The slope of linear regression for two repeated measurements was close to 1 (%VAT, 1.02; workload at the VAT, 0.95; METs at the VAT, 1.03), except for HR (0.70). Bland-Altman plots revealed the reproducibility of all four CPET measurements between the two sessions. In conclusion, CPET up to the VAT can be performed safely 1-day post-PCI in patients with stable CHD. CPET parameters do not significantly differ between testing performed the day after and 1-3 weeks after PCI. Next-day CPET during hospitalization after PCI may enable prompt exercise prescription without the need for another CPET 1-3 weeks later.

Abstract
Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) is a challenging complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and alternative therapies for patients showing inadequate response to steroids are limited. Vedolizumab, an anti-α4β7 integrin antibody widely used for treating inflammatory bowel diseases, has recently been studied in adult patients with steroid-refractory intestinal aGVHD. However, few studies have examined its safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients with intestinal aGVHD. We report the case of a male patient with intestinal late-onset aGVHD treated with vedolizumab. He underwent allogeneic cord blood transplantation for warts, hypogammaglobulinemia, infections, and myelokathexis (WHIM) syndrome and developed intestinal late-onset aGVHD 31 months after transplantation. The patient was refractory to steroids; however, vedolizumab was initiated 43 months after transplantation (at the age of 7 years) and the symptoms of intestinal aGVHD were alleviated. Additionally, favorable endoscopic findings were observed, such as reduction of erosion and regenerative epithelial growth. We also evaluated the efficacy of vedolizumab in 10 patients with intestinal aGVHD (9 from the literature review and the present case). Six patients (60%) showed an objective response to vedolizumab. No serious adverse events were observed in any patients. Vedolizumab is a potential treatment option for steroid-refractory intestinal aGVHD in pediatric patients.

Abstract
Conventional direct pulp-capping materials induce pulp cells to secrete various biomolecules in pulp tissues that promote reparative dentin formation through induction of odontoblastic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). However, these biomolecules sometimes induce bone-like dentin with poor sealing properties. Therefore, exploration of biomolecules that allow tight sealing by tubular reparative dentin is required. We recently reported that dopamine (DA) is involved in dentinogenesis. Hence, we investigated the effect of DA on odontoblastic differentiation of DPSCs and reparative dentin formation. Both tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), a DA synthetase, and DA were expressed in odontoblast-like cells in vivo. In vitro, their expression was increased during odontoblastic differentiation of DPSCs. Furthermore, TH-overexpressing DPSCs had promoted odontoblastic differentiation and DA production. Moreover, DA stimulation promoted their differentiation and induced tubular reparative dentin. These results suggest that DA produced by TH is involved in odontoblastic differentiation of DPSCs and has an inductive capacity for reparative dentin formation similar to primary dentin. This study may lead to the development of therapy to preserve vital pulp tissues.

Abstract
The concept of complex and high-risk indicated procedures using percutaneous coronary intervention (CHIP-PCI) has recently been defined. However, few studies have investigated the prognosis of patients after CHIP-PCI. We enrolled 322 consecutive patients who underwent CHIP-PCI. CHIP-PCI was defined as a procedure satisfying at least one criterion each for both patient and procedure characteristics, as follows: patient characteristics [age ≥ 75 years old, low left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), diabetes mellitus, acute coronary syndrome, previous coronary artery bypass surgery, peripheral arterial disease, severe chronic kidney disease (CKD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and severe valvular disease] and procedure characteristics [unprotected left main disease, degenerated saphenous or radial artery grafts, severely calcified lesions, last patent conduit, chronic total occlusions, multivessel disease, and use of mechanical circulatory support]. On Kaplan-Meier analysis, 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates following CHIP-PCI was 93.8%, 89.2%, and 85.4%, respectively. Moreover, on Cox multivariate hazard analysis, age (≥ 75 years old) (hazard ratio: 4.01, 95% confidence interval: 1.92-8.38, P < 0.01), COPD (hazard ratio: 2.95, 95% confidence interval: 1.38-6.32, P < 0.01), low LVEF (hazard ratio: 3.35, 95% confidence interval: 1.55-7.22, P < 0.01), severe CKD (hazard ratio: 3.02, 95% confidence interval: 1.44-6.36, P < 0.01), and use of mechanical circulatory support (hazard ratio: 5.97, 95% confidence interval: 2.72-13.10, P < 0.01) remained significant predictors of mortality. In conclusion, we revealed the clinical outcomes after CHIP-PCI. The presence of advanced age, COPD, low LVEF, severe CKD, and mechanical circulatory support use might lead to worse clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Defect functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by chemical modification is a promising strategy for near-infrared photoluminescence (NIR PL) generation at >1000 nm, which has advanced telecom and bio/medical applications. The covalent attachment of molecular reagents generates sp3-carbon defects in the sp2-carbon lattice of SWCNTs with bright red-shifted PL generation. Although the positional difference between proximal sp3-carbon defects, labeled as the defect binding configuration, can dominate NIR PL properties, the defect arrangement chemistry remains unexplored. Here, aryldiazonium reagents with π-conjugated ortho-substituents (phenyl and acetylene groups) were developed to introduce molecular interactions with nanotube sidewalls into the defect-formation chemical reaction. The functionalized chiral SWCNTs selectively emitted single defect PL in the wavelength range of ∼1230-1270 nm for (6,5) tubes, indicating the formation of an atypical binding configuration, different from those exhibited by typical aryl- or alkyl-functionalized chiral tubes emitting ∼1150 nm PL. Moreover, the acetylene-based substituent design enabled PL brightening and a subsequent molecular modification of the doped sites using click chemistry.

Abstract
Background Mitigation measures implemented during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic remarkably reduced the incidence of infectious diseases among children. However, a reemergence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection was observed in 2021 in Japan. We compared the clinical characteristics of hospitalized patients with RSV infection before and during COVID-19. Methods We retrospectively enrolled children aged <6 years who were hospitalized with RSV infection in 18 hospitals and compared their clinical characteristics before (January 2019 to April 2020, 1,675 patients) and during COVID-19 (September 2020 to December 2021, 1,297 patients). Results The mean age of patients with RSV infection was significantly higher during COVID-19 than before (17.4 vs. 13.7 months, P < .001). Compared with before COVID-19, a 2.6-fold increase in RSV cases in the 2–5 years age group was observed from sentinel surveillance during COVID-19, while a 1.2-fold increase was noted in the same age group among hospitalized patients. On average for all patients, consolidation shadows obtained on radiography were less frequently observed (26.1 vs. 29.6%, P = .04) and reduced respiratory assistance (42.2% vs. 48.7%, P < .001) and hospitalization stay (5.7 vs. 6.0 days, P < .001) was required in patients with RSV infection during COVID-19. Conclusions COVID-19 and social activity restriction caused epidemiological changes in pediatric RSV infections, and a majority of patients with RSV infection aged ≥2 years did not develop severe symptoms requiring hospitalization. The RSV symptoms during the COVID-19 outbreak were equivalent to or milder than in the previous seasons.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
With regards to short-term outcome in atrial fibrillation (AF), the benefit of cryoballoon ablation (CBA) by pressing a balloon against the earliest pulmonary vein (PV) potential site during pulmonary vein isolation, (earliest potential [EP]-guided CBA) has been previously demonstrated.
Objective
The present study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcome of the EP-guided CBA.
Methods
This study included 136 patients from two randomized studies, who underwent CBA for paroxysmal AF for the first time. Patients were randomly assigned to the EP-guided and conventional CBA groups in each study. In the EP-guided CBA group, we pressed a balloon against the EP site when the time to isolation (TTI) after cryoapplication exceeded 60 s and 45 s in the first and second studies, respectively. The patients were followed up for 1 year after procedure. We compared the clinical outcomes between the EP-guided CBA group (68 patients) and the conventional CBA group (68 patients).
Results
No significant differences in baseline characteristics were observed between the two groups. Compared with the conventional CBA group, the EP-guided CBA group had a significantly higher success rate at TTI ≤90 s (98.5% vs. 90.0%, P<0.001); lower touch-up rate and total cryoapplication; and shorter procedure time, and fluoroscopy time. The recurrence at 1-year after ablation was significantly lower in the EP-guided CBA group than in the conventional CBA group (6.0% vs. 19.4%; P=0.019).
Conclusions
The EP-guided CBA approach can facilitate the ablation procedure and achieve low recurrence at 1-year after ablation.

Abstract
In cryoballoon ablation (CBA), a contrast medium is commonly used to confirm balloon occlusion of the pulmonary veins (PVs). However, a contrast medium cannot always be used in patients with renal dysfunction and allergy. The present study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of CBA without the use of a contrast medium. We retrospectively examined consecutive patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) who underwent first-time CBA. We compared the procedural results and outcomes in patients for whom a contrast medium was used (contrast group) and those from whom a contrast medium was not used (non-contrast group). In the non-contrast group, we used saline injection on the intracardiac echocardiography and pressure wave monitoring for PV occlusion. Fifty patients (200 PVs) and 22 patients (88 PVs) underwent CBA with and without a contrast medium, respectively. The success rate of PV isolation with CBA alone was 93% and 90% in the non-contrast and contrast groups, respectively (p = 0.40). The fluoroscopy time and nadir temperature were significantly lower in the non-contrast group as compared to that in the contrast group. The recurrence rate 1 year after ablation did not differ between the two groups (18% vs. 18%, p > 0.99). Furthermore, the number of reconnected PVs in patients with recurrence was significantly lower in the non-contrast group than in the contrast group (6% vs. 36%, p = 0.017). In conclusion, CBA using the intracardiac echocardiography and pressure monitoring approach without the use of a contrast medium was safe and efficient.

Abstract
Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a potential complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), but its incidence and risk factors remain unclear. Thus, we reviewed the cases of 259 consecutive children who received allogeneic HSCT at our institution between January 2000 and December 2017 to determine the incidence and risk factors of AP. Thirteen patients developed AP during a median follow-up period of 4.4 years. The median time from HSCT to AP onset was 80 days (range 29-2426 days), and cumulative incidence (CI) at 4 years was 5.0% [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 2.7-8.3%]. The CI of AP was significantly higher in patients who received bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells than in those who received cord blood (7.2% versus 0.0% at 4 years, P = 0.02) and was higher in patients who developed grade II-IV acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) than in those who did not (31.4% versus 1.4% at 4 years, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that grade II-IV acute GVHD was an independent risk factor for AP [hazard ratio 15.2 (95% CI 4.1-55.8), P < 0.001] and was strongly associated with post-HSCT AP in children.

Abstract
The Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) is a simple tool to assess patients' frailty and may help to predict adverse outcomes in elderly patients. The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of CFS on clinical outcomes and bleeding events after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We enrolled 266 consecutive patients with STEMI who underwent primary PCI in between January 2015 and June 2018. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the CFS stages: CFS 1-3 and CFS ≥ 4. We collected the data and evaluated the relationship between the CFS grade and the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and Bleeding Academic Research Consortium 3 or 5 bleeding events. Of these patients, CFS ≥ 4 was present in 59 (22.2%). During the follow-up, 37.3% in the CFS ≥ 4 group and 8.2% in the CFS 1-3 group experienced MACE. In Kaplan-Meier analysis, the proportion of MACE-free survival for 4 years was significantly lower in the CFS ≥ 4 group (log-rank P < 0.001). Additionally, the proportion of bleeding event-free survival was significantly lower in the CFS ≥ 4 group (log-rank P < 0.001). The CFS (per 1-grade increase) remained an independent significant predictor of MACE on multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis [hazard ratio 1.39 (95% confidence interval: 1.08 to 1.79, P = 0.01)]. In conclusion, CFS was an independent predictor of future adverse cardiac events in patients with STEMI. Therefore, the assessment of CFS is crucial in this population.

Abstract
When continued device scaling reaches the ultimate limit imposed by atoms, technology based on atomically precise structures is expected to emerge. Device fabrication will then require building blocks with identified atomic arrangements and assembly of the components without contamination. Here we report on a versatile dry transfer technique for deterministic placement of optical-quality carbon nanotubes. Single-crystalline anthracene is used as a medium which readily sublimes by mild heating, leaving behind clean nanotubes and thus enabling bright photoluminescence. We are able to position nanotubes of a desired chirality with a sub-micron accuracy under in-situ optical monitoring, thereby demonstrating deterministic coupling of a nanotube to a photonic crystal nanobeam cavity. A cross junction structure is also designed and constructed by repeating the nanotube transfer, where intertube exciton transfer is observed. Our results represent an important step towards development of devices consisting of atomically precise components and interfaces. As device fabrication reach atomic scales, assembly of atomically defined components becomes crucial. Here, the authors demonstrate a low contamination transfer technique, using single-crystalline anthracene as medium, for placement of structure-specific carbon nanotubes with submicron accuracy.

Abstract
The performance of a Raman silicon laser based on a high quality-factor nanocavity depends on the degree of free-carrier absorption, and this characteristic may be useful for certain applications. Here we demonstrate that laser oscillation in a Raman silicon nanocavity laser stops abruptly after an exposure to a weak flux of negatively ionized air for a few seconds. Spectral measurements reveal that the laser interruption is mainly caused by the transfer of extra electrons from the negatively ionized air molecules to the silicon nanocavity. These electrons affect the efficiency of the Raman laser by free carrier absorption. We find that the laser output gradually recovers as the extra electrons escape from the nanocavity and confirm that such a detection of ionized air is repeatable. These results show that a Raman silicon nanocavity laser can be used for the detection of ionized air with a high spatial resolution.

Abstract
Background The cardiopulmonary function is hypothesized to be associated with atrial fibrillation/atrial tachyarrhythmia (AF/AT) recurrence after AF ablation. Purpose To clarify the relationship between the cardiopulmonary function after successful ablation and AF/AT recurrence. Methods We examined 31 patients with paroxysmal AF who underwent AF ablation. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) was performed at 1month after the ablation. A continuously increasing loading method on a bicycle ergometer was employed for the CPET. Results No adverse events, including AF/AT recurrence, occurred during the CPET. Among 31 patients, AT/AF recurrence was observed in seven (23%). The ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) and peak oxygen consumption (VO2) were significantly higher in patients without AF/AT recurrence than in those with AT/AF recurrences (peak VO2 23.6 ± 5.7 vs 17.2 ± 4.1 mL/kg/min; VAT, 16.7 ± 2.8 vs 13.8 ± 2.7 mL/min/kg). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the peak VO2 and VAT were 0.786 (P < .01) and 0.789(P < .01), respectively. Both indices had a sensitivity of 70%–80% and specificity of 70%–80% for predicting AT/AF recurrence. Similar results were obtained for the percent values of the predicted peak VO2 and VAT. Conclusions The present pilot study found that CPET can be performed safely at approximately 1 month after AF ablation. The peak VO2 and VAT were significantly associated with AT/AF recurrence. The peak VO2 and VAT were thought to provide helpful information regarding AT/AF recurrence.

Abstract
Eight horse breeds-Hokkaido, Kiso, Misaki, Noma, Taishu, Tokara, Miyako and Yonaguni-are native to Japan. Although Japanese native breeds are believed to have originated from ancient Mongolian horses imported from the Korean Peninsula, the phylogenetic relationships among these breeds are not well elucidated. In the present study, we compared genetic diversity among 32 international horse breeds previously evaluated by the Equine Genetic Diversity Consortium, the eight Japanese native breeds and Japanese Thoroughbreds using genome-wide SNP genotype data. The proportion of polymorphic loci and expected heterozygosity showed that the native Japanese breeds, with the exception of the Hokkaido, have relatively low diversity compared to the other breeds sampled. Phylogenetic and cluster analyses demonstrated relationships among the breeds that largely reflect their geographic distribution in Japan. Based on these data, we suggest that Japanese horses originated from Mongolian horses migrating through the Korean Peninsula. The Japanese Thoroughbreds were distinct from the native breeds, and although they maintain similar overall diversity as Thoroughbreds from outside Japan, they also show evidence of uniqueness relative to the other Thoroughbred samples. This is the first study to place the eight native Japanese breeds and Japanese Thoroughbred in context with an international sample of diverse breeds.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a population pharmacodynamic (PPD) model to describe uric acid (UA)-lowering effects in patients treated with febuxostat based on electronic medical records in 2 independent hospitals (university and city hospitals). Interhospital differences in the PPD model were also evaluated. We conducted the following 2 approaches to build the PPD models. A PPD model was developed separately using individual hospital data, and structural models and covariates between the two hospitals were compared (approach A). Another PPD model was developed using all available data from both hospitals, and differences between the 2 hospitals were evaluated by performing a covariate analysis on all PPD parameters (approach B). PPD analyses were performed by NONMEM using data from 358 patients. In both approaches, one indirect response model was established. In approach A, 2 diuretics (loops and thiazides) and renal function tests (Scr or BUN) were selected as covariates for the UA baseline level (serum UA levels just before the febuxostat treatment), whereas 2 diuretics and BUN were selected in approach B. A covariate analysis indicated that loops and thiazides increased UA baseline levels by 7%-14% and 6%-11%, respectively. In approach B, "hospital" was identified as a significant covariate for the UA baseline level; the baseline level was 7% higher in the city hospital. A PPD analysis may provide a precise description of the time course of the UA-lowering effects of febuxostat and quantitatively detect an interhospital difference in the UA baseline level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is a potentially life-threatening syndrome comprising severe skin eruption, fever, eosinophilia, lymphadenopathy, and involvement of internal organs. Here, we describe a case of DRESS syndrome caused by cross-reactivity between vancomycin and subsequent teicoplanin administration. CASE REPORT A 79-year-old male was admitted to our hospital for the treatment of injuries incurred in a traffic accident. Eosinophilia and lung dysfunction appeared after vancomycin administration. These symptoms were improved temporarily by withdrawal of vancomycin and administration of corticosteroid, but exacerbated by subsequent teicoplanin administration. These symptoms disappeared after discontinuation of teicoplanin. Based on comprehensive assessment of the overall clinical course, we judged that DRESS syndrome was induced by cross-reactivity between vancomycin and subsequent teicoplanin administration. Using the European Registry of Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions (RegiSCAR) scoring system, we categorized DRESS syndrome related to vancomycin and teicoplanin as "probable." We describe, for the first time, DRESS syndrome (defined using the RegiSCAR scoring system) caused by cross-reactivity between vancomycin and subsequent teicoplanin administration. CONCLUSIONS Clinicians should be aware that DRESS syndrome can be induced by cross-reactivity between vancomycin and teicoplanin.

Abstract
Charge carrier dynamics in perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells were studied by means of microscopic photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent (PC) imaging spectroscopy. The PL intensity, PL lifetime, and PC intensity varied spatially on the order of several tens of micrometers. Simultaneous PL and PC image measurements revealed a positive correlation between the PL intensity and PL lifetime, and a negative correlation between PL and PC intensities. These correlations were due to the competition between photocarrier injection from the CH3NH3PbI3 layer into the charge transport layer and photocarrier recombination within the CH3NH3PbI3 layer. Furthermore, we found that the decrease in the carrier injection efficiency under prolonged light illumination leads to a reduction in PC, resulting in light-induced degradation of solar cell devices. Our findings provide important insights for understanding carrier injection at the interface and light-induced degradation in perovskite solar cells.

Abstract
We have precisely measured the Raman shift of photonic crystal silicon heterostructure nanocavities for Raman laser applications. We utilized a near-infrared excitation laser of wavelength 1.42 μm in order to avoid local sample heating and exploited two high-Q nanocavity modes to calibrate the Raman frequency. The measured Raman shift was 15.606 THz (520.71 cm(-1)) with a small uncertainty of 1.0 × 10(-3) THz. In addition, we investigated the compressive stress generated in a photonic crystal slab in which a ~5.1 × 10(-3) THz blue shift of the Raman peak and a slight warpage of the slab were observed. We also demonstrated that the stress could be eliminated by using a cantilever structure.

Abstract
The tyrosinase inhibitory activity of methanol extracts of the leaves of 39 plant species growing on the seashore of Iriomote island (Okinawa, Japan) was investigated. The extracts of Hibiscus tiliaceus, Carex pumila, and Garcinia subelliptica showed potent activity among them. The inhibitors in the extract of Garcinia subelliptica were purified by assay-guided fractionation to give two biflavonoids. These were known compounds (2R,3S-5,7,4',5'',7'',3''',4'''-heptahydroxy flavanone[3-8''] flavone and 5,7,4',5'',7'',3''',4'''-heptahydroxy[3-8''] biflavanone), although their strong inhibitory activity toward tyrosinase is revealed for the first time in this work. One of these biflavonoids (2R,3S-5,7,4',5'',7'',3''',4'''-heptahydroxy flavanone[3-8''] flavone) showed much stronger activity (IC50 2.5 microM) than that of kojic acid (IC50 9.1 microM) when L-tyrosine was used as the substrate.

Abstract
We demonstrated 32-channel drop filters with 100 GHz spacing consisting of arrayed nanocavities and a waveguide in a photonic crystal silicon slab. Changing the lattice constant of the nanocavities on the subnanometer scale successfully controlled the drop wavelengths at 100 GHz spacing in the wavelength range between 1510 and 1550 nm. The device size was as small as 15 μm × 270 μm, and the variation in drop wavelengths was less than 0.3 nm in terms of standard deviation. We also present a movie showing the operation of the drop filter, demonstrating that the arrayed nanocavities have the potential for developing ultracompact 100 GHz spaced filters in a dense wavelength division multiplexing system.

Abstract
In this paper, we present a method to determine unit commitment schedules, while considering CO2emissions and costs along with the frequency regulation capability of the units, in order tomitigate fluctuations in wind power. We developed an extended procedure that obtains a trade-off solution of cost versus CO2emissions, including a significant wind power penetration, and developed Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) as additional reserves. The proposed method was tested on a 10-unit, 24-hour model system using the estimated wind power curve derived from an actual wind farm. The results, such as shadow prices of CO2obtained using the trade-off analysis, may provide a basis of evaluating the equivalent cost of wind farms and PEVs, and their contributions to CO2reduction.

Abstract
Abstract
Objectives: Optical mammography (O-MMG), which utilizes near-infrared light for the detection of abnormal breast tissue, can be a potentially useful and non-invasive tool for the screening of breast cancer patients. Here we report on the preliminary results of our clinical trial using a time-resolved O-MMG system developed by Hamamatsu Photonics (Hamamatsu, Japan). In our past examination, negative results included cases with mismatch for breast cup because of small breast, lesion outside of cup because of big breast, and bad positioning. So, size and shape of a gantry was improved (3 cup sizes; S, M and L cup). We reported the initial experience of the improved O-MMG systems.
Materials and Methods: In principle, the technique involves sequential irradiation of the breast tissue with a pulsed laser with a wavelength of 760, 800 and, 830nm, which is then detected by the variable capacity gantry at multiple sites after passing through the breast tissue. Measurement time has improved to about 7 minutes (a third of the conventional measurement time). The data are analyzed and tomographic images of the absorption coefficient of the breast are then reconstructed based on our tomographic reconstruction algorithm. Between October 2011 and May 2012, fifteen patients with breast cancer and one patient with fibroadenoma participated in the trial.
Results: In patients with breast cancer, S cup was used for one patient, M cup for 12 patients and L cup for two patients. Five patients after neo-adjuvant chemotherapy were excluded from the analysis. The lesions were depicted as an area of high hemoglobin concentration in 7 of 10 patients with cancer. One lesion of fibroadenoma was also identified as an area of high hemoglobin concentration.
Conclusion: Further examination with our new O-MMG systems will be of interest.

The system utilizes the time-correlated single photon counting method, and the detector modules and the signal processing circuits were custom-made to obtain a high signal to noise ratio and high temperature stability with a high temporal resolution. Pulsed light generated by a Ti: Sapphire laser was irradiated to the breast, and the transmitted light was collected by optical fibers placed on the surface of a hemispherical gantry filled with an optical matching fluid. To reconstruct a 3D image of the breast, we employed a method using a time-resolved photon path distribution based on the assumption that scattering and absorption are independent of each other. We verified the possibility of human breast imaging by using a three-dimensional phantom model, which provides a simulation of human breast cancer, in the gantry. The clinical study was also started in January 2007. In a comparative study with conventional modalities, the breast cancers were detected as regions of optically higher absorption. Moreover, the results suggest that optical mammography is useful in monitoring the effects of chemotherapy.

Abstract
Porosity and interconnectivity are important properties of calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) and bone-replacement materials. Porosity of CPCs can be achieved by adding polymeric biodegradable pore-generating particles (porogens), which can add porosity to the CPC and can also be used as a drug-delivery system. Porosity affects the mechanical properties of CPCs, and hence is of relevance for clinical application of these cements. The current study focused on the effect of combinations of polymeric mesoporous porogens on the properties of a CPC, such as specific surface area, porosity and interconnectivity and the development of mechanical properties. CPC powder was mixed with different amounts of PLGA porogens of various molecular weights and porogen sizes. The major factors affecting the properties of the CPC were related to the amount of porogen loaded and the porogen size; the molecular weight did not show a significant effect per se. A minimal porogen size of 40 μm in 30 wt.% seems to produce a CPC with mechanical properties, porosity and interconnectivity suitable for clinical applications. The properties studied here, and induced by the porogen and CPC, can be used as a guide to evoke a specific host-response to maintain CPC integrity and to generate an explicit bone ingrowth.

Abstract
Objectives: To examine optical properties of breast cancer by time-resolved spectroscopy.
Materials and Methods: We irradiated a pulsed laser of 760, 800, and 830 nm wave-length lights at multiple sites of both breasts including the site just above the cancer and detected the light transmitted through the breast with TRS-20SH (Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.). Absorption coefficient (μa), reduced scattering coefficient (μs'), total hemoglobin (tHb), and oxygen saturation (SO2) of the breast were calculated by photon diffusion equation. The clinical trial started in January 2007. A total of one hundred nine breast cancer patients participated in the trial and written informed consent were obtained from all of the patients. Results: In 800 nm wave-length, absorption coefficient (μa) of breast cancer tissue was significantly high, compared with contra-lateral normal breast (cancer:0.0677± 0.0293, normal breast;0.0479± 0.0161, p<0.001).
The result was the same in 760, and 830 nm. There was no difference in reduced scattering coefficient (μs') between breast cancer tissue and contra-lateral normal breast (800 nm cancer:9.070±1.217, normal breast;9.348±1.243, p=0.10). The tHb of breast cancer tissue was significantly high, compared with normal breast (cancer:31.0± 14.7, normal breast;21.0±8.2, p<0.001). There was no difference in oxygen saturation (SO2) between breast cancer tissue and contra-lateral normal breast (cancer:72.8±4.1, normal breast;73.8±4.5, p=0.08).
Conclusion: Absorption coefficient (μa) and tHb increased in breast cancer, whereas reduced scattering coefficient (μs') did not.

Abstract
Background Array-based detection of copy number variations (CNVs) is widely used for identifying disease-specific genetic variations. However, the accuracy of CNV detection is not sufficient and results differ depending on the detection programs used and their parameters. In this study, we evaluated five widely used CNV detection programs, Birdsuite (mainly consisting of the Birdseye and Canary modules), Birdseye (part of Birdsuite), PennCNV, CGHseg, and DNAcopy from the viewpoint of performance on the Affymetrix platform using HapMap data and other experimental data. Furthermore, we identified CNVs of 180 healthy Japanese individuals using parameters that showed the best performance in the HapMap data and investigated their characteristics. Results The results indicate that Hidden Markov model-based programs PennCNV and Birdseye (part of Birdsuite), or Birdsuite show better detection performance than other programs when the high reproducibility rates of the same individuals and the low Mendelian inconsistencies are considered. Furthermore, when rates of overlap with other experimental results were taken into account, Birdsuite showed the best performance from the view point of sensitivity but was expected to include many false negatives and some false positives. The results of 180 healthy Japanese demonstrate that the ratio containing repeat sequences, not only segmental repeats but also long interspersed nuclear element (LINE) sequences both in the start and end regions of the CNVs, is higher in CNVs that are commonly detected among multiple individuals than that in randomly selected regions, and the conservation score based on primates is lower in these regions than in randomly selected regions. Similar tendencies were observed in HapMap data and other experimental data. Conclusions Our results suggest that not only segmental repeats but also interspersed repeats, especially LINE sequences, are deeply involved in CNVs, particularly in common CNV formations. Abstract
In recent years, the request of environmental safety management for carcinogenic substances, mutagenic substances and/or reproductive toxicity substances (CMR) has increased. This study focused on clarifying the genotoxicity level of environmental water and its release source by using the umu test provided in ISO13829. Although a genotoxicity index "induction ratio (IR)" is used in ISO13829, we normalised it to make it possible to compare various environmental water quantitatively to each other as a new index "genotoxic activity (GA=(IR-1)/Dose)". Sample water was collected and concentrated to 100 times or 1,000 times by a solid phase extraction method. As the test results, it was found that GA level in actual river water varied widely from less than the determination limit of 23 [1/L] to 1,100 [1/L] by quantitative comparison, and the value was also equivalent to more than 50 times the level of tap water. The GA level of household wastewater was not so high, but the levels of treated water from wastewater treatment plant (WTP) were from 220 [1/L] to 3,200 [1/L]. Raw sewage of some WTP shows high level genotoxicity. A part of genotoxicity substances, for example 50%, could be removed by conventional wastewater treatment, but it was not enough to reduce the water environmental load of genotoxicity.

A pulsed laser of 760, 800, and 830 nm wave-length was irradiated at multiple sites in both breasts with time-resolved spectroscopy method and scattered light was analyzed by photon diffusion equation. A total of ten breast cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy participated in the trial. Written informed consent was obtained from all of the patients.Results: Absorption coefficient (µa, 1/cm) of breast cancer was significantly higher than that of contra-lateral normal region before chemotherapy. In 800 nm wave-length, absorption coefficient of breast cancer decreased significantly after chemotherapy (before:0.0927, after;0.0498, p=0.002). Although absorption coefficient of contra-lateral normal region also decreased (before:0.0561, after;0.0437, p=0.006), cancer showed more significant decrease than contra-lateral normal region (cancer:-43.1%, normal region;-19.0%, P<0.01).

Similar results were observed in 760 and 830 nm wave-length. There was no difference in reduced scattering coefficient (µs') between before and after chemotherapy in both breast cancer and contra-lateral normal region.
Conclusion: The absorption coefficient of cancer was significantly higher than that of contra-lateral normal region before chemotherapy and decreased significantly after chemotherapy.

Objectives: The optical parameters of breast were measured by time-resolved spectroscopy additionally to optical mammography (O-MMG), which utilizes near-infrared light for the detection of abnormal breast tissue as a non-invasive and painless new breast imaging technique. There was no difference in reduced scattering coefficient (μs') of breast cancer tissue compared with contra-lateral normal area (cancer: 9.049±01.345, normal: 9.521±1.492, p=0.07).Conclusion: Absorption coefficient (μa) of breast cancer tissue was significantly high compared with contra-lateral normal area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cathepsin K (cat K), a cysteine protease expressed in osteoclasts, chondrocytes and synovial fibroblasts, degrades several bone and cartilage matrix components suggesting its potential role in osteoarthritis (OA). We investigated the effects of SB-553484, an inhibitor of cat K, on lesion severity and biomarkers of collagen degradation in the canine partial medial meniscectomy model. METHODS A partial medial meniscectomy was performed in mature female beagle dogs. Animals were dosed orally with vehicle or SB-553484 at 50mg/kg BID for 28 days. The femorotibial joints were evaluated for gross and microscopic histological changes. Biomarkers of collagen degradation were also analyzed. RESULTS In dogs treated with SB-553484, subjective gross and calculated degeneration scores decreased significantly by 29% and 46%, respectively. Histopathologic evaluation demonstrated that the summed tibial degeneration score decreased significantly by 21%. Inhibition of tibial cartilage degeneration was significant in zone 1 (32%) and the depth ratio of any tibial matrix change was decreased significantly by 28%. Urinary biomarkers of bone and cartilage degradation were also significantly reduced. CONCLUSION Treatment with SB-553484 resulted in mild to moderate beneficial effects on gross and histopathological parameters. Reduction of biomarkers of collagen type I and II degradation indicated a direct effect of the compound on bone and cartilage. These data suggest that the prevention of cartilage degradation by cat K inhibition may represent a valid strategy for pharmacological intervention in OA and that monitoring collagen degradation biomarkers may provide an indication of the protective effects of inhibition of bone and cartilage degradation.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are involved in sensory cell and neural death in the peripheral nervous system, including damage induced by noise trauma. Antioxidant administration prior to or concomitant with noise exposure can prevent auditory deficits, but the efficacy of a delayed treatment is not known. We have recently found continued reactive oxygen species/reactive nitrogen species formation in the ear for 7-10 days following noise exposure and reasoned that antioxidant intervention during this period should also reduce noise-induced hearing loss. Guinea-pigs were subjected to 4 kHz octave band noise at 120 decibels sound- pressure-level (dB SPL) for 5 hours and received treatment with ROS and RNS scavengers (salicylate and trolox) beginning 3 days prior, 1 hour, 1, 3, or 5 days after noise exposure. Auditory thresholds were assessed by sound-evoked auditory brainstem response at 4, 8, and 16 kHz, before and 10 days after noise exposure. Hair cell damage was analyzed by quantitative histology, and free radical activity was determined immunohistochemically via 4-hydroxynonenal and nitrotyrosine as markers of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species action. Delivered up to 3 days after noise exposure, salicylate and trolox significantly reduced auditory brainstem response deficits, reduced hair cell damage, and decreased reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species formation. Earlier drug treatment was more effective than later treatment. Our results detail a window of opportunity for rescue from noise trauma, and provide evidence for both morphological and functional protection by delayed pharmacological intervention.
