First Measurement of η Meson Production in Neutrino Interactions on Argon with MicroBooNE

We present a measurement of η production from neutrino interactions on argon with the MicroBooNE detector. The modeling of resonant neutrino interactions on argon is a critical aspect of the neutrino oscillation physics program being carried out by the DUNE and Short Baseline Neutrino programs. η production in neutrino interactions provides a powerful new probe of resonant interactions, complementary to pion channels, and is particularly suited to the study of higher-order resonances beyond the Δ(1232). We measure a flux-integrated cross section for neutrino-induced η production on argon of 3.22±0.84(stat)±0.86(syst) 10^{-41}  cm^{2}/nucleon. By demonstrating the successful reconstruction of the two photons resulting from η production, this analysis enables a novel calibration technique for electromagnetic showers in GeV accelerator neutrino experiments.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients in Mexico City

BACKGROUND

Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients are among patients with highest risk of adverse coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes.

OBJECTIVE

We compared clinical outcomes in post-HSCT patients with COVID-19 before and during the Omicron period.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a retrospective study including patients post-HSCT with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection from April 2020 to March 2023 at Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, Mexico City. We describe their clinical characteristics and report the variables associated with severe clinical disease, hospitalization, and death.

RESULTS

Fifty-three patients were included; 31 (58.5%) from the pre-Omicron period and 22 (41.5%) from the Omicron period. Median age was 42-years old (interquartile range 26-53), and 31 patients (59%) were men. Only four patients (16%) had received a vaccine prior to COVID-19 diagnosis in the pre-Omicron period versus 20 (91%) in the Omicron period (p < 0.001). COVID-19 severe cases were more common before Omicron: seven patients (23%) versus two patients (9%). Only one patient (3%) received an antiviral in the pre-Omicron period compared to 11 patients (50%) during the Omicron period (p < 0.01). COVID-19-associated mortality was almost double in the pre-Omicron period (16% vs. 9%, p = 0.6).

CONCLUSIONS

This study reports patients with a high proportion of severe outcomes during the first 2 years of the pandemic. Outcomes improved during Omicron with better access to vaccines and antivirals and no in-hospital cases. Variables associated with worse outcomes were similar to other reports. Strengthening infection control measures in the hospital and better access to preventive strategies and therapeutic options are mandatory in these high-risk patients.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Electron-Positron and Neutral-Pion Final States with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying into νe^{+}e^{-} or νπ^{0} final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's main injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01×10^{20} protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the mixing parameter |U_{μ4}|^{2} in the mass ranges 10≤m_{HNL}≤150  MeV for the νe^{+}e^{-} channel and 150≤m_{HNL}≤245  MeV for the νπ^{0} channel, assuming |U_{e4}|^{2}=|U_{τ4}|^{2}=0. Comparison of 5-Item and 11-Item Modified Frailty Index as Predictors of Functional Independence in Patients With Spinal Cord Injury

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION

The 11-item modified Frailty index (mFI-11) by the ACS-NSQIP database was used to predict which patients are high risk for complications and inpatient mortality. ACS-NSQIP now has switched to the 5-item MFI. However, there are no studies on how these frailty indices fare against each other and their prognostic value of functional independence in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI).

OBJECTIVE

To compare the mFI-5 and mFI-11 in order to standardize frailty assessment in the SCI population.

METHODS

Retrospective analysis of 272,174 patients with SCI from 2010 to 2020 from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) registry. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the predictive value of mFI for functional independence as determined by locomotion and transfer mobility.

RESULTS

A total of 1907 patients were included with a mean age of 46.9 ± 15.1 years. The 3 most common MFI factors were hypertension (32.2%), diabetes mellitus (13.7%) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (8.5%). Multivariable logistic regression analyses using MFI-5 and MFI-11 showed that a higher frailty score in MFI-5 (OR 1.375, P < .001) and in MFI-11 (OR 1.366, P < .001) were each predictive of poor functional status at discharge. ROC curves for the MFI-5 (AUC = .818, P < .001) and MFI-11 (AUC = .819, P < .001) demonstrated excellent diagnostic accuracy.

CONCLUSION

The new MFI-5 is equivalent to its predecessor, the MFI-11, and predictive of functional outcomes in patients with SCI. MFI-5 can serve as the preferred frailty index at the point of care and in research contexts.

A review on bioactive peptides derived from meat and by-products: Extraction methods, biological activities, applications and limitations

Meat and its by-products offer a rich source of bioactive compounds which have potential applications in both the food and pharmaceutical industries. In this review, we present several extraction methods and report the identification and properties of bioactive peptides. We also examine the challenges and limitations associated with their use in food applications. Enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation using starts cultures are common methods for generating bioactive peptides from meat proteins. Additionally, natural gastrointestinal digestion can also produce bioactive peptides. However, emerging technologies like high hydrostatic pressure, subcritical extraction and pulsed electric fields can improve hydrolysis and increase the yield of bioactive peptides. Online bioinformatics applications have emerged as an established method for identifying potentially bioactive peptides. These tools reduce the cost and time required for traditional methods of research. Finally, incorporating bioactive peptides into diets for specific purposes such as supporting vulnerable populations like children and the elderly ensures safety and efficacy.

The effect of dispersal on asymptotic total population size in discrete- and continuous-time two-patch models

Many populations occupy spatially fragmented landscapes. How dispersal affects the asymptotic total population size is a key question for conservation management and the design of ecological corridors. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of two-patch models with symmetric dispersal and two standard density-dependent population growth functions, one in discrete and one in continuous time. A complete analysis of the discrete-time model reveals four response scenarios of the asymptotic total population size to increasing dispersal rate: (1) monotonically beneficial, (2) unimodally beneficial, (3) beneficial turning detrimental, and (4) monotonically detrimental. The same response scenarios exist for the continuous-time model, and we show that the parameter conditions are analogous between the discrete- and continuous-time setting. A detailed biological interpretation offers insight into the mechanisms underlying the response scenarios that thus improve our general understanding how potential conservation efforts affect population size.

First Double-Differential Measurement of Kinematic Imbalance in Neutrino Interactions with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated double-differential quasielasticlike neutrino-argon cross sections, which have been made using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data are presented as a function of kinematic imbalance variables which are sensitive to nuclear ground-state distributions and hadronic reinteraction processes. We find that the measured cross sections in different phase-space regions are sensitive to different nuclear effects. Therefore, they enable the impact of specific nuclear effects on the neutrino-nucleus interaction to be isolated more completely than was possible using previous single-differential cross section measurements. Our results provide precision data to help test and improve neutrino-nucleus interaction models. They further support ongoing neutrino-oscillation studies by establishing phase-space regions where precise reaction modeling has already been achieved.

Antioxidant and Antidiabetic Properties of Phlorotannins from Ascophyllum nodosum Seaweed Extracts

Seaweeds have gained considerable attention in recent years due to their potential health benefits and high contents of bioactive compounds. This review focuses on the exploration of seaweed's health-promoting properties, with particular emphasis on phlorotannins, a class of bioactive compounds known for their antioxidant and antidiabetic properties. Various novel and ecofriendly extraction methods, including solid-liquid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction are examined for their effectiveness in isolating phlorotannins. The chemical structure and isolation of phlorotannins are discussed, along with methods for their characterization, such as spectrophotometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and chromatography. Special attention is given to the antioxidant activity of phlorotannins. The inhibitory capacities of polyphenols, specifically phlorotannins from Ascophyllum nodosum against digestive enzymes, such as α-amylase and α-glucosidase, are explored. The results suggest that polyphenols from Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed hold significant potential as enzyme inhibitors, although the inhibitory activity may vary depending on the extraction conditions and the specific enzyme involved. In conclusion, seaweed exhibits great potential as a functional food ingredient for promoting health and preventing chronic diseases. Overall, this review aims to condense a comprehensive collection of high-yield, low-cost, and ecofriendly extraction methods for obtaining phlorotannins with remarkable antioxidant and antidiabetic capacities.

Combined cytotoxicity of ZnO nanoparticles and chlorpyrifos in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mikyss, gonadal cell line RTG-2

The toxicity of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in aquatic organisms has been extensively studied, but little information is available on the effects associated with their interaction with other contaminants. In this context, the in vitro effects of co-exposure of chlorpyrifos (CPF) and ZnO NPs on fish-derived cells were investigated. A selection of concentrations was tested in single and binary exposures: CPF (0.312 - 75 mg/L) and ZnO NPs (10 - 100 mg/L). Cytotoxicity was measured using commonly used cellular endpoints: Alamar Blue/CFDA-AM for viability and plasma membrane integrity, NRU for lysosomal disruption and MTT for mitochondrial function. In addition, specific mechanisms of toxicity for CPF and ZnO NPs were tested: acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and ROS generation, respectively. AChE was by far the most sensitive assay for single exposure to CPF. There was no concentration-response relationship for ROS after single exposure to ZnO NPs, but 10 mg/L produced significant effects only for this cellular endpoint. Co-exposure of CPF with 10 m/L of ZnO NPs produced significant effects in almost all endpoints tested, which were enhanced by co-exposure with 100 mg/L of ZnO NPs. AChE testing of additional co-exposures with bulk ZnO, together with the application of the Independent Action (IA) prediction model, which allowed us to draw more in-depth conclusions on the toxicological behavior of the mixture. Synergism was observed at 0.625 mg/L CPF concentration and antagonism at 5 mg/L CPF in mixtures containing 100 mg/L of both ZnO NPs and bulk ZnO. However, more cases of synergism between CPF and ZnO NPs occurred at intermediate CPF concentrations, demonstrating that nano-sized particles have a more toxic interaction with CPF than bulk ZnO. Therefore it can be argued that in vitro assays allow the identification of interaction profiles of NP-containing mixtures by achieving multiple endpoints with a large number of concentration combinations.

First Measurement of Quasielastic Λ Baryon Production in Muon Antineutrino Interactions in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first measurement of the cross section of Cabibbo-suppressed Λ baryon production, using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector when exposed to the neutrinos from the main injector beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data analyzed correspond to 2.2×10^{20} protons on target running in neutrino mode, and 4.9×10^{20} protons on target running in anti-neutrino mode. An automated selection is combined with hand scanning, with the former identifying five candidate Λ production events when the signal was unblinded, consistent with the GENIE prediction of 5.3±1.1 events. Several scanners were employed, selecting between three and five events, compared with a prediction from a blinded Monte Carlo simulation study of 3.7±1.0 events. Restricting the phase space to only include Λ baryons that decay above MicroBooNE's detection thresholds, we obtain a flux averaged cross section of 2.0_{-1.7}^{+2.2}×10^{-40}  cm^{2}/Ar, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined.

Advanced Proteomic and Bioinformatic Tools for Predictive Analysis of Allergens in Novel Foods

In recent years, novel food is becoming an emerging trend increasingly more demanding in developed countries. Food proteins from vegetables (pulses, legumes, cereals), fungi, bacteria and insects are being researched to introduce them in meat alternatives, beverages, baked products and others. One of the most complex challenges for introducing novel foods on the market is to ensure food safety. New alimentary scenarios drive the detection of novel allergens that need to be identified and quantified with the aim of appropriate labelling. Allergenic reactions are mostly caused by proteins of great abundance in foods, most frequently of small molecular mass, glycosylated, water-soluble and with high stability to proteolysis. The most relevant plant and animal food allergens, such as lipid transfer proteins, profilins, seed storage proteins, lactoglobulins, caseins, tropomyosins and parvalbumins from fruits, vegetables, nuts, milk, eggs, shellfish and fish, have been investigated. New methods for massive screening in search of potential allergens must be developed, particularly concerning protein databases and other online tools. Moreover, several bioinformatic tools based on sequence alignment, motif identification or 3-D structure predictions should be implemented as well. Finally, targeted proteomics will become a powerful technology for the quantification of these hazardous proteins. The ultimate objective is to build an effective and resilient surveillance network with this cutting-edge technology.

Valorisation of pork by-products to obtain antioxidant and antihypertensive peptides

The porcine liver could be used for the extraction of zinc-protoporphyrin (ZnPP) as a natural red meat pigment. During the autolysis process, porcine liver homogenates was incubated at pH 4.8 and 45 °C under anaerobic conditions to obtain insoluble ZnPP. After incubation, the homogenates were readjusted at pH 4.8, and at pH 7.5 before being centrifuged at 5500 × g for 20 min at 4 °C and the resulting supernatant were compared with the obtained at pH 4.8 at the beginning of the incubation. The molecular weight distributions of the porcine liver fractions at both pHs were very similar, however, eight essential amino acids were more abundant in fractions obtained at pH 4.8. Regarding the ORAC assay, porcine liver protein fraction at pH 4.8 showed the highest antioxidant capacity but antihypertensive inhibition was similar for both pHs. Peptides with strong bioactivity potential from aldehyde dehydrogenase, lactoylglutathione lyase, SEC14-like protein 3 and others were identified. The findings have demonstrated the potential of the porcine liver to extract natural pigments and bioactive peptides.

Towards the discovery of goat meat quality biomarkers using label-free proteomics

This study aimed to identify for the first time protein biomarkers of meat quality traits from Longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle of goats (Capra hircus). Male goats of similar age and weight reared under extensive rearing conditions were used to relate the LT muscle proteome with multiple meat quality traits. The early post-mortem muscle proteome analyzed using label-free proteomics was compared among three texture clusters built using hierarchical clustering analysis. Twenty-five proteins were differentially abundant and their mining using bioinformatics revealed three major biological pathways to be involved: 10 muscle structure proteins (MYL1, MYL4, MYLPF, MYL6B, MYH1, MYH2, ACTA1, ACTBL2, FHL1 and MYOZ1); 6 energy metabolism proteins (ALDOA, PGAM2, ATP5F1A, GAPDH, PGM1 and ATP5IF1), and two heat shock proteins: HSPB1 (small) and HSPA8 (large). Seven other miscellaneous proteins belonging to pathways such as regulation, proteolysis, apoptosis, transport and binding, tRNA processing or calmodulin-binding were further identified to play a role in the variability of goat meat quality. The differentially abundant proteins were correlated with the goat meat quality traits in addition to multivariate regression models built to propose the first regression equations of each quality trait. This study is the first to highlight in a multi-trait quality comparison the early post-mortem changes in the goat LT muscle proteome. It also evidenced the mechanisms underpinning the development of several quality traits of interest in goat meat production along the major biochemical pathways at interplay. SIGNIFICANCE: The discovery of protein biomarkers in the field of meat research is an emerging topic. In the case of goat meat quality, very few studies using proteomics have been conducted with the aim of proposing biomarkers. Therefore, this study is the first to quest for biomarkers of goat meat quality using label-free shotgun proteomics with a focus on multiple quality traits. We identified the molecular signatures underlying goat meat texture variation, which were found to belong to muscle structure and related proteins, energy metabolism and heat shock proteins along with other proteins involved in regulation, proteolysis, apoptosis, transport and binding, tRNA processing or calmodulin-binding. We further evaluated the potential of the candidate biomarkers to explain meat quality using the differentially abundant proteins by means of correlation and regression analyses. The results allowed the explanation of the variation in multiple traits such as pH, color, water-holding capacity, drip and cook losses traits and texture.

Search for Dark-Matter-Nucleon Interactions via Migdal Effect with DarkSide-50

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c^{2} mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c^{2} dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12 306±184)  kg d. The analysis is based on the ionization signal alone and significantly enhances the sensitivity of DarkSide-50, enabling sensitivity to dark matter with masses down to 40  MeV/c^{2}. Furthermore, it sets the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below 3.6  GeV/c^{2}.

Search for Dark Matter Particle Interactions with Electron Final States with DarkSide-50

We present a search for dark matter particles with sub-GeV/c^{2} masses whose interactions have final state electrons using the DarkSide-50 experiment's (12 306±184)  kg d low-radioactivity liquid argon exposure. By analyzing the ionization signals, we exclude new parameter space for the dark matter-electron cross section σ[over ¯]_{e}, the axioelectric coupling constant g_{Ae}, and the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter κ. We also set the first dark matter direct-detection constraints on the mixing angle |U_{e4}|^{2} for keV/c^{2} sterile neutrinos.

Selecting the lowest instrumented vertebra in a multilevel posterior cervical fusion across the cervicothoracic junction: a biomechanical investigation

OBJECTIVE

Posterior cervical fusion is a common surgical treatment for patients with myeloradiculopathy or regional deformity. Several studies have found increased stresses at the cervicothoracic junction (CTJ) and significantly higher revision surgery rates in multilevel cervical constructs that terminate at C7. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical effects of selecting C7 versus T1 versus T2 as the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) in multisegmental posterior cervicothoracic fusion procedures.

METHODS

Seven fresh-frozen cadaveric cervicothoracic spines (C2-L1) with ribs intact were tested. After analysis of the intact specimens, posterior rods and lateral mass screws were sequentially added to create the following constructs: C3-7 fixation, C3-T1 fixation, and C3-T2 fixation. In vitro flexibility tests were performed to determine the range of motion (ROM) of each group in flexion-extension (FE), lateral bending (LB), and axial rotation (AR), and to measure intradiscal pressure of the distal adjacent level (DAL).

RESULTS

In FE, selecting C7 as the LIV instead of crossing the CTJ resulted in the greatest increase in ROM (2.54°) and pressure (29.57 pound-force per square inch [psi]) at the DAL in the construct relative to the intact specimen. In LB, selecting T1 as the LIV resulted in the greatest increase in motion (0.78°) and the lowest increase in pressure (3.51 psi) at the DAL relative to intact spines. In AR, selecting T2 as the LIV resulted in the greatest increase in motion (0.20°) at the DAL, while selecting T1 as the LIV resulted in the greatest increase in pressure (8.28 psi) in constructs relative to intact specimens. Although these trends did not reach statistical significance, the observed differences were most apparent in FE, where crossing the CTJ resulted in less motion and lower intradiscal pressures at the DAL.

CONCLUSIONS

The present biomechanical cadaveric study demonstrated that a cervical posterior fixation construct with its LIV crossing the CTJ produces less stress in its distal adjacent discs compared with constructs with C7 as the LIV. Future clinical testing is necessary to determine the impact of this finding on patient outcomes.

Increased Surgeon-specific Experience and Volume is Correlated With Improved Clinical Outcomes in Lumbar Fusion Patients

STUDY DESIGN

The present study design was that of a single center, retrospective cohort study to evaluate the influence of surgeon-specific factors on patient functional outcomes at 6 months following lumbar fusion. Retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent neurosurgical lumbar instrumented arthrodesis identified the present study population.

OBJECTIVE

This study seeks to evaluate surgeon-specific variable effects on patient-reported outcomes such as Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the effect of North American Spine Society (NASS) concordance on outcomes in the setting of variable surgeon characteristics.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA

Lumbar fusion is one of the fastest growing procedures performed in the United States. Although the impact of surgeon-specific factors on patient-reported outcomes has been contested, studies examining these effects are limited.

METHODS

This is a single center, retrospective cohort study analyzing a prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent neurosurgical lumbar instrumented arthrodesis by 1 of 5 neurosurgery fellowship trained spine surgeons. The primary outcome was improvement of ODI at 6 months postoperative follow-up compared with preoperative ODI.

RESULTS

A total of 307 patients were identified for analysis. Overall, 62% of the study population achieved minimum clinically important difference (MCID) in ODI score at 6 months. Years in practice and volume of lumbar fusions were statistically significant independent predictors of MCID ODI on multivariable logistic regression ( P =0.0340 and P =0.0343, respectively). Concordance with evidence-based criteria conferred a 3.16 (95% CI: 1.03, 9.65) times greater odds of achieving MCID.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates that traditional surgeon-specific variables predicting surgical morbidity such as experience and procedural volume are also predictors of achieving MCID 6 months postoperatively from lumbar fusion. Independent of surgeon factors, however, adhering to evidence-based guidelines can lead to improved outcomes.

Evaluation of eight registration algorithms applied to the insula and insular gyri

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Spatial registration is crucial in establishing correspondence between anatomic brain regions for research and clinical purposes. The insular cortex (IC) and gyri (IG) are implicated in various functions and pathologies including epilepsy. Optimizing registration of the insula to a common atlas can improve the accuracy of group-level analyses. Here, we compared six nonlinear, one linear, and one semiautomated registration algorithms (RAs) for registering the IC and IG to the Montreal Neurologic Institute standard space (MNI152).

METHODS

3T images acquired from 20 controls and 20 temporal lobe epilepsy patients with mesial temporal sclerosis underwent automated segmentation of the insula. This was followed by manual segmentation of the entire IC and six individual IGs. Consensus segmentations were created at 75% agreement for IC and IG before undergoing registration to MNI152 space with eight RAs. Dice similarity coefficients (DSCs) were calculated between segmentations after registration and the IC and IG in MNI152 space. Statistical analysis involved the Kruskal-Wallace test with Dunn's test for IC and two-way analysis of variance with Tukey's honest significant difference test for IG.

RESULTS

DSCs were significantly different between RAs. Based on multiple pairwise comparisons, we report that certain RAs performed better than others across population groups. Additionally, registration performance differed according to specific IG.

CONCLUSION

We compared different methods for registering the IC and IG to MNI152 space. We found differences in performance between RAs, which suggests that algorithm choice is important factor in analyses involving the insula.

Initial Heart Rate Predicts Functional Independence in Patients With Spinal Cord Injury Requiring Surgery: A Registry-Based Study in a Mature Trauma System Over the Past 10 Years

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES

To determine the ability of early vital sign abnormalities to predict functional independence in patients with SCI that required surgery.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis of data extracted from the Pennsylvania Trauma Outcome Study database. Inclusion criteria were patients >18 years with a diagnosis of SCI who required urgent spine surgery in Pennsylvania from 1/1/2010-12/31/2020 and had complete records available.

RESULTS

A total of 644 patients met the inclusion criteria. The mean age was 47.1 ± 14.9 years old and the mean injury severity score (ISS) was 22.3 ± 12.7 with the SCI occurring in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine in 61.8%, 19.6% and 18.0%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analyses for predictors of functional independence at discharge showed that higher HR at the scene (OR 1.016, 95% CI 1.006-1.027, P = .002) and lower ISS score (OR .894, 95% CI .870-.920, P < .001) were significant predictors of functional independence. Similarly, higher admission HR (OR 1.015, 95% CI 1.004-1.027, P = .008) and lower ISS score (OR .880, 95% CI 0.864-.914, P < .001) were significant predictors of functional independence. Peak Youden indices showed that patients with HR at scene >70 and admission HR ≥83 were more likely to achieve functional independence.

CONCLUSIONS

Early heart rate is a strong predictor of functional independence in patients with SCI. HR at scene >70 and admission HR ≥83 is associated with improved outcomes, suggesting lack of neurogenic shock.

Clinical Outcomes with and without Adherence to Evidence-Based Medicine Guidelines for Lumbar Degenerative Spondylolisthesis Fusion Patients

INTRODUCTION

Degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DS) patients are treated with instrumented fusion, following EBM guidelines, and typically have excellent clinical outcomes. However, not all lumbar fusion procedures adhere to EBM guidelines, typically due to a lack of prospective data.

OBJECTIVE

This retrospective study compared outcomes of DS lumbar fusion patients treated according to EBM guidelines (EBM concordant) to lumbar fused patients with procedures that did not have clear EBM literature that supported this treatment, the goal being to examine the value of present EBM to guide clinical care.

METHODS

A total of 125 DS patients were considered EBM concordant, while 21 patients were EBM discordant. Pre- and postsurgical ODI scores were collected. Clinical outcomes were stratified into substantial clinical benefit (SCB ΔODI >10 points), minimal clinical importance benefit (MCID ΔODI ≥ 5 points), no MCID (ΔODI < 5 points), and a group that showed no change or worsening ODI. Fisher's exact and χ2 tests for categorical variables, Student's t-test for continuous variables, and descriptive statistics were used. Statistical tests were computed at the 95% level of confidence.

RESULTS

Analysis of 125 degenerative spondylolisthesis patients was performed comparing preoperative and postoperative (6 months) ODI scores. ODI improved by 8 points in the EBM concordant group vs. 2.1 points in the EBM discordant group (p = 0.002). Compliance with EBM guidelines was associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.93 for achieving MCID ([CI]: 1.12-7.58, p = 0.027).

CONCLUSIONS

Patients whose lumbar fusions met EBM criteria had better self-reported outcomes at six months than those who did not meet the requirements. A greater knowledge set is needed to help further support EBM-guided patient care.

Does Preoperative Opiate Choice Increase Risk of Postoperative Infection and Subsequent Surgery?

BACKGROUND

Opioids are commonly prescribed for chronic pain before spinal surgery and research has shown an increased rate of postoperative adverse events in these patients.

OBJECTIVE

This study compared the incidence of 2-year subsequent surgical procedures and postoperative adverse events in patients undergoing lumbar fusion with or without 90-day preoperative opioid use. We hypothesized that patients using preoperative opioids would have a higher incidence of subsequent surgery and adverse outcomes.

METHODS

A retrospective cohort study was performed using the Optum Pan-Therapeutic Electronic Health Records database including adult patients who had their first lumbar fusion between 2015 and 2018. The daily average preoperative opioid dosage 90 days before fusion was determined as morphine equivalent dose and further categorized into high dose (morphine equivalent dose >100 mg/day) and low dose (1-100 mg/day). Clinical outcomes were compared after adjusting for confounders.

RESULTS

A total of 23,275 patients were included, with 2112 patients (10%) using opioids preoperatively. There was a significantly higher incidence of infection compared with nonusers (12.3% vs. 10.1%; P = 0.01). There was no association between subsequent fusion surgery (7.9% vs. 7.5%; P = 0.52) and subsequent decompression surgery (4.1% vs. 3.6%; P = 0.3) between opioid users and nonusers. Regarding postoperative infection risk, low-dose users showed significantly higher incidence (12.7% vs. 10.1%; P < 0.01), but high-dose users did not show higher incidence than nonusers (7.5% vs. 10.1%; P = 0.23).

CONCLUSIONS

Consistent with previous studies, opioid use was significantly associated with a higher incidence of 2-year postoperative infection compared with nonuse. Low-dose opioid users had higher postoperative infection rates than did nonusers.

The potential of proteomics in the study of processed meat products

Proteomics is a field that has grown rapidly since its emergence in the mid-1990s, reaching many disciplines such as food technology. The application of proteomic techniques in the study of complex biological samples such as foods, specifically meat products, allows scientists to decipher the underlying cellular mechanisms behind different quality traits. Lately, much emphasis has been placed on the discovery of biomarkers that facilitate the prediction of biochemical transformations of the product and provide key information on parameters associated with traceability and food safety. This review study focuses on the contribution of proteomics in the improvement of processed meat products. Different techniques and strategies have recently been successfully carried out in the study of the proteome of these products that can help the development of foods with a higher sensory quality, while ensuring consumer safety through early detection of microbiological contamination and fraud. SIGNIFICANCE: The food industry and the academic world work together with the aim of responding to market demands, always seeking excellence. In particular, the meat industry has to face a series of challenges such as, achieving sensory attributes in accordance with the standards required by the consumer and maintaining a high level of safety and transparency, avoiding deliver adulterated and/or contaminated products. This review work exposes how the aforementioned challenges are attempted to be solved through proteomic technology, discussing the latest and most outstanding research in this regard, which undoubtedly contribute to improving the quality, in all the extension of the word, of meat products, providing relevant knowledge in the field of proteomic research.

First Constraints on Light Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Combined Appearance and Disappearance Searches with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for eV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations in the MicroBooNE liquid argon detector, simultaneously considering all possible appearance and disappearance effects within the 3+1 active-to-sterile neutrino oscillation framework. We analyze the neutrino candidate events for the recent measurements of charged-current ν_{e} and ν_{μ} interactions in the MicroBooNE detector, using data corresponding to an exposure of 6.37×10^{20} protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam. We observe no evidence of light sterile neutrino oscillations and derive exclusion contours at the 95% confidence level in the plane of the mass-squared splitting Δm_{41}^{2} and the sterile neutrino mixing angles θ_{μe} and θ_{ee}, excluding part of the parameter space allowed by experimental anomalies. Cancellation of ν_{e} appearance and ν_{e} disappearance effects due to the full 3+1 treatment of the analysis leads to a degeneracy when determining the oscillation parameters, which is discussed in this Letter and will be addressed by future analyses.

Exoscope improves visualization and extent of hippocampal resection in temporal lobectomy

INTRODUCTION

Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) is a safe and well-validated procedure in the treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), but is a challenging technique to master and still confers a risk of morbidity and mortality due to the complex anatomy of the mesial temporal lobe structures. Automated robotic 3D exoscopes have been developed to address limitations traditionally associated with microscopic visualization, allowing for ergonomic, high-definition 3D visualization with hands-free control of the robot. Given the potential advantages of using such a system for visualization of complex anatomy seen during mesial structure resection in ATL, this group sought to investigate impact on the percentage of hippocampal resection in both exoscope and microscope guided procedures.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective analysis of 20 consecutive patients undergoing standard ATL for treatment of medically refractory TLE at our institution. Using pre-operative and post-operative imaging, the coronal plane cuts in which either the head, body, or tail of the hippocampus appeared were counted. The number of cuts in which the hippocampus appeared were multiplied by slice thickness to estimate hippocampal length.

RESULTS

Mean percentage of hippocampal resection was 61.1 (SD 13.1) and 76.5 (SD 6.5) for microscope and exoscope visualization, respectively (p = 0.0037).

CONCLUSION

Use of exoscope for mesial resection during ATL has provided good visualization for those in the operating room and the potential for a safe increase in hippocampal resection in our series. Further investigation of its applications should be evaluated to see if it will improve outcomes.

Lumbar Synovial Cysts-Should You Fuse or Not?

BACKGROUND

Spinal synovial cysts are lesions that most commonly occur in the lumbar region. The need for an instrumented spinal fusion in addition to lumbar decompression with removal of the synovial cyst is unknown.

OBJECTIVE

To test the hypothesis that select patients who underwent decompression with instrumented fusion for lumbar synovial cysts would be less likely to have subsequent surgery (SS) in a 2-year period than patients treated with laminectomy alone.

METHODS

This retrospective cohort study was performed using IBM MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters Database. Patients who had a lumbar synovial cyst diagnosis and laminectomy surgery with or without fusion surgery were included in this study. Patients were tracked for SS 2 years after surgery. Laminectomy patients were propensity score-matched to laminectomy with fusion (LF) patients using a 2:1 ratio. The log-rank test and Cox regression were used to compare the cumulative incidence of SS between groups.

RESULTS

There were 7664 and 1631 patients treated with laminectomy and LF before matching. After matching, there were 2212 laminectomy and 1631 LF patients and patient characteristics were balanced. The 2-year incidence of recurrent SS was 3.1% ([CI]: 2.2%, 4.0%) and 1.7% (95% CI: 0.9%, 2.5%) laminectomy and LF, respectively. Compared with laminectomy, LF had a statistically significant lower risk of recurrent SS (hazard ratio: 0.56 [95% CI: 0.32-0.97]; P -value: .04).

CONCLUSION

All patients who had concomitant lumbar fusion showed decreased chance of having a cyst- or noncyst-related recurrence SS when compared with all patients undergoing laminectomy alone, regardless of diagnosis at the time of SS.

Improved Measurement of Solar Neutrinos from the Carbon-Nitrogen-Oxygen Cycle by Borexino and Its Implications for the Standard Solar Model

We present an improved measurement of the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) solar neutrino interaction rate at Earth obtained with the complete Borexino Phase-III dataset. The measured rate, R_{CNO}=6.7_{-0.8}^{+2.0}  counts/(day×100  tonnes), allows us to exclude the absence of the CNO signal with about 7σ C.L. The correspondent CNO neutrino flux is 6.6_{-0.9}^{+2.0}×10^{8}  cm^{-2} s^{-1}, taking into account the neutrino flavor conversion. We use the new CNO measurement to evaluate the C and N abundances in the Sun with respect to the H abundance for the first time with solar neutrinos. Our result of N_{CN}=(5.78_{-1.00}^{+1.86})×10^{-4} displays a ∼2σ tension with the "low-metallicity" spectroscopic photospheric measurements. Furthermore, our result used together with the ^{7}Be and ^{8}B solar neutrino fluxes, also measured by Borexino, permits us to disfavor at 3.1σ C.L. the "low-metallicity" standard solar model B16-AGSS09met as an alternative to the "high-metallicity" standard solar model B16-GS98.

Incidence of Pseudarthrosis and Subsequent Surgery After Cervical Fusion Surgery: A Retrospective Review of a National Health Care Claims Database

BACKGROUND

Cervical pseudarthrosis is a postoperative adverse event that occurs when a surgically induced fusion fails to establish bone growth connecting the 2 regions. It has both clinical and financial implications and may result in significant patient morbidity; it continues to be one of the leading causes of pain after surgery.

METHODS

A retrospective longitudinal cohort study was performed. Patients in the IBM MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters (CCAE) database, 18-64 years old, who underwent elective cervical fusions during 2015-2019 were included. Patients with trauma, infection, or neoplasm were excluded. Patients were followed for 2 years from surgical fusion for occurrence of pseudarthrosis. After pseudarthrosis, subsequent surgery was documented, and cumulative incidence curves, adjusted for patient/procedure characteristics, with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were generated. Risk factors were evaluated with multivariable Cox regression analysis.

RESULTS

The cohort included 45,584 patients. The 1-year and 2-year incidence of pseudarthrosis was 2.0% (95% CI, 1.9%-2.2%) and 3.3% (95% CI, 3.1%-3.5%), respectively. Factors significantly associated with increased risk of pseudarthrosis were female gender, current/previous substance abuse, previous spinal pain in the cervical/thoracic/lumbar spine, and Elixhauser score ≥5. Factors significantly associated with decreased risk of pseudarthrosis were anterior cervical approach, use of an interbody cage, and 2-level or 3-level anterior instrumentation. The 1-year and 2-year incidence of subsequent surgery in patients with pseudarthrosis was 11.7% (95% CI, 9.6%-13.7%) and 13.8% (95% CI, 11.5%-16.2%), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Cervical pseudarthrosis and subsequent surgery still occur at a low rate. Surgical factors such as anterior approach, interbody cage use, and anterior instrumentation may reduce pseudarthrosis risk.

Use of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to Discriminate DFD Beef and Predict Meat Quality Traits in Autochthonous Breeds

The potential of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) to discriminate Normal and DFD (dark, firm, and dry) beef and predict quality traits in 129 Longissimus thoracis (LT) samples from three Spanish purebreeds, Asturiana de los Valles (AV; n = 50), Rubia Gallega (RG; n = 37), and Retinta (RE; n = 42) was assessed. The results obtained by partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) indicated successful discrimination between Normal and DFD samples of meat from AV and RG (with sensitivity over 93% for both and specificity of 100 and 72%, respectively), while RE and total sample sets showed poorer results. Soft independent modelling of class analogies (SIMCA) showed 100% sensitivity for DFD meat in total, AV, RG, and RE sample sets and over 90% specificity for AV, RG, and RE, while it was very low for the total sample set (19.8%). NIRS quantitative models by partial least squares regression (PLSR) allowed reliable prediction of color parameters (CIE L*, a*, b*, hue, chroma). Results from qualitative and quantitative assays are interesting in terms of early decision making in the meat production chain to avoid economic losses and food waste.

The role of emerging technologies in the dehydration of berries: Quality, bioactive compounds, and shelf life

Convective, vacuum, microwave, and freeze-drying are the most common methods.

Pre-treatments improve permeability, accelerate drying, and inactivate oxidation.

Combined methods are recommended to assure high quality of dehydrated berries.

Berries are among the fruits with the highest nutritional and commercial value. This paper reviews the conventional and emerging dehydration methods most commonly used as postharvest treatment and discusses their efficacy in maintaining and/or improving the nutritional and functional qualities of dried berries. The characteristics of the conventional methods (e.g., convective drying, freeze-drying, spray-drying, osmotic dehydration), their pre-treatments, their combination, and intermittent drying, as well as their potential disadvantages are discussed. The use of emerging dehydration techniques (e.g., electromagnetic radiation drying, explosion puffing drying, heat pump drying, low-pressure superheated steam drying, microwave drying) allows to improve the quality of the dried berries compared to conventional techniques, in addition to reducing drying times, increasing drying speed and energy efficiency. Finally, the use of pre-treatments and the combination of technologies can enhance the quality of the final product as a result of the improvement in the effectiveness of the dehydration process.

Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift-length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC

DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6  ×  6  ×  6 m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

Search for an Excess of Electron Neutrino Interactions in MicroBooNE Using Multiple Final-State Topologies

We present a measurement of ν_{e} interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE Collaboration. Three independent ν_{e} searches are performed across multiple single electron final states, including an exclusive search for two-body scattering events with a single proton, a semi-inclusive search for pionless events, and a fully inclusive search for events containing all hadronic final states. With differing signal topologies, statistics, backgrounds, reconstruction algorithms, and analysis approaches, the results are found to be either consistent with or modestly lower than the nominal ν_{e} rate expectations from the Booster Neutrino Beam and no excess of ν_{e} events is observed.

Introduction

MicroRNAs have been explored in different organisms and considered molecular switches that modulate cellular differentiation and specification. Moreover, Hox gene families have gained pivotal relevance, being broadly conserved during evolution, and their roles to shape body embryo have been widely described in multiple species. Both molecular factors have shown to be essential during embryonic development, including the cardiovascular system.

Purpose

Analysis of the expression profiles of different microRNAs during early cardiac development, with special emphasis on those displaying marked expression in the sinus venosus, and correlation of these findings with several Hox family members revealed as targets of these microRNAs.

Methods

Using whole mount in situ hybridization in developing chick embryo with microRNA-specific LNA probes, we carried out a detailed study of miR-23b, miR-130a and miR-106a expressions during early stages of embryogenesis (HH3 to HH17). Those findings were correlated with putative microRNA target genes by means of mirWalk and TargetScan analyses. Through PCR analysis we explored the expression profile of all cranially expressed Hox genes, including all paralogues (Hoxa to Hoxd) from 1 to 6 in chicken cardiac sinus venosus, at stages HH11 and HH15. Finally, we developed in vitro microRNA gain-of-function experiments on cardiomyoblasts -derived from undifferentiated H9c2 cells- together with an analysis of chicken sinus venosus explants.

Results

Our results demonstrate a dynamic expression pattern from the primitive streak to cardiac looping stages for miR-23b, miR-130a and miR-106a, with marked expression in the cardiac sinus venosus. We observe that all those Hox genes analyzed -except Hoxa1- are detected at HH11, while Hoxa1, Hoxd3 and Hoxd4 are not detected at HH15. In addition, by means of gain-of-function experiments both in cardiomyoblasts and sinus venosus explants, we observe the modulation of the different Hox cluster genes (Hoxa, Hoxb, Hoxc and Hoxd) by those microRNAs. Finally, we demonstrate, through a dual luciferase assay, that Hoxa1 is targeted by miR-130a and Hoxa4 is targeted by both miR-23b and miR-106a.

Conclusion

This study presents several novel findings in the field of cardiac development. Our data show a dynamic expression profile of miR-23b, miR-130a and miR-106a, and we also identify the expression of several Hox genes in the sinus venosus at stages HH11 and HH15. Moreover, we demonstrate a negative modulation of several Hox genes by these microRNAs, both in cardiomyoblasts and sinus venosus. The convergent expression of these microRNAs regulating Hox gene expressions in the sinus venosus supports the hypothesis of their roles in differentiation and compartmentalization of the cardiac venous pole.

Inhibition of RhoA and Cdc42 by miR-133a modulates retinoic acid signaling during early development of the posterior cardiac tube segment

Introduction

It has been demonstrated that multiple microRNAs play crucial roles in diverse biological processes, including cardiovascular development. In particular, we have previously observed miR-133a expressing at different stages of the primitive streak precardiac cells until the formation of the cardiac tube. MiR-133a role has also been reported as a modulator of proliferation and differentiation during heart development, involving many target genes and signaling pathways. Furthermore, we have shown in previous studies that retinoic acid plays a crucial role in cardiac development, modulating the expression of atrial markers.

Purpose

The aim of this work is to analyze the miR-133a modulation role on the retinoic acid signaling pathway in the posterior segment of the heart tube during cardiac looping formation.

Methods

By means of microinjections in both primitive endocardial tubes of chick embryo culture, gain- and loss-of-function experiments were performed with premiR-133a and anti-miR-133a, respectively. Subsequently, embryos were subjected to whole mount in situ hybridization with Tbx5 and AMHC1 probes, and qPCR. After TargetScan analysis and luciferase assays, immunohistochemistry was carried out by using anti-RhoA, -Cdc42 and -Raldh2/ALDH1A2 antibodies.

Results

Luciferase assays show that miR-133a is capable to recognize and bind to RhoA and Cdc42 3´UTR, thus triggering their mRNA degradation. Our results reveal that miR-133a gain-of-function experiments repress the expression of atrial markers Tbx5 and AMHC1, as well as RhoA, Cdc42 and -Raldh2/ALDH1A2 signals. Supporting these data, miR-133a loss-of-function experiments show the opposite effect: they increase the expression of Tbx5 and AMHC1, as well as RhoA, Cdc42 and Raldh2/ALDH1A2 signals.

Conclusion

Our results suggest that miR-133a could modulate negatively retinoic acid signaling by triggering degradation of pivotal genes RhoA and Cdc42, both required for Raldh2/ALDH1A2 expression, crucial to the synthesis of retinoic acid.

Walras, a novel lncRNA linked to cardiomyocyte cytoarchitecture and atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia in humans. Genetic and genomic analyses have recently demonstrated that the homeobox transcription factor Pitx2 plays a fundamental role regulating expression of distinct growth factors, microRNAs and ion channels leading to morphological and molecular alterations that promote the onset of AF. Here we address the plausible contribution of long non-coding (lnc)RNAs within the Pitx2&gt;Wnt&gt;miRNA signaling pathway. In silico analyses of annotated lncRNAs in the vicinity of the Pitx2, Wnt8 and Wnt11 chromosomal loci identified five novel lncRNAs with differential expression during cardiac development. Importantly, three of them, Walaa, Walras and Wallrd, are evolutionarily conserved in humans and displayed preferential atrial expression during embryogenesis. In addition, Walrad displayed moderate expression during embryogenesis but was more abundant in the right atrium. Walaa, Walras and Wallrd were distinctly regulated by Pitx2, Wnt8, and Wnt11, and Wallrd was severely elevated in conditional atrium-specific Pitx2-deficient mice. Furthermore, pro-arrhythmogenic and pro-hypertrophic substrate administration to primary cardiomyocyte cell cultures consistently modulate expression of these lncRNAs, supporting distinct modulatory roles of the AF cardiovascular risk factors in the regulation of these lncRNAs. Walras affinity pulldown assays revealed its association with distinct cytoplasmic and nuclear proteins previously involved in cardiac pathophysiology, while loss-of-function assays further support a pivotal role of this lncRNA in cytoskeletal organization. We propose that lncRNAs Walaa, Walras and Wallrd, distinctly regulated by Pitx2&gt;Wnt&gt;miRNA signaling and pro-arrhythmogenic and pro-hypertrophic factors, are implicated in atrial arrhythmogenesis, and Walras additionally in cardiomyocyte cytoarchitecture.

Combined Anterior Osteophytectomy and Cricopharyngeal Myotomy for Treatment of DISH-Associated Dysphagia

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective observational case series.

OBJECTIVE

To assess the outcome of patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) with dysphagia who underwent cricopharyngeal myotomy (CPM) in conjunction with anterior osteophytectomy (OP).

METHODS

This is a retrospective observational study of 9 patients that received combined intervention by neurosurgeons and otolaryngologists. Inclusion criteria for surgery consisted of patients who failed to respond to conservative treatments for dysphagia and had evidence of both upper esophageal dysfunction and osteophyte compression. We present the largest series in literature to date including patients undergoing combined OP and CPM.

RESULTS

A total of 88.9% (8/9) of the patients who underwent OP and CPM showed improvement in their symptoms. Of the aforementioned group, 22.2% of these patients had complete resolution of their symptoms, 11.1% did not improve, and only 2 patients showed recurrence of their symptoms. None of the patients in whom surgery was performed required reoperation or suffered serious complication related to the surgical procedures.

CONCLUSION

Based on the literature results, high rate of improvements in dysphagia, and low rate of complications, combined OP and CPM procedures may be beneficial to a carefully selected group of patients.

First Measurement of Energy-Dependent Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report a measurement of the energy-dependent total charged-current cross section σ(E_{ν}) for inclusive muon neutrinos scattering on argon, as well as measurements of flux-averaged differential cross sections as a function of muon energy and hadronic energy transfer (ν). Data corresponding to 5.3×10^{19} protons on target of exposure were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab booster neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. The mapping between the true neutrino energy E_{ν} and reconstructed neutrino energy E_{ν}^{rec} and between the energy transfer ν and reconstructed hadronic energy E_{had}^{rec} are validated by comparing the data and Monte Carlo (MC) predictions. In particular, the modeling of the missing hadronic energy and its associated uncertainties are verified by a new method that compares the E_{had}^{rec} distributions between data and a MC prediction after constraining the reconstructed muon kinematic distributions, energy, and polar angle to those of data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well modeled and underpins first-time measurements of both the total cross section σ(E_{ν}) and the differential cross section dσ/dν on argon.

Search for Neutrino-Induced Neutral-Current Δ Radiative Decay in MicroBooNE and a First Test of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess under a Single-Photon Hypothesis

We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a ⟨0.8⟩  GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE's first three years of operations (6.80×10^{20} protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in situ high-purity measurement of NC π^{0} events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5±3.65(syst) and 145.1±13.8(syst) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (C.L.). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% C.L., in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world's best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

First Directional Measurement of Sub-MeV Solar Neutrinos with Borexino

We report the measurement of sub-MeV solar neutrinos through the use of their associated Cherenkov radiation, performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The measurement is achieved using a novel technique that correlates individual photon hits of events to the known position of the Sun. In an energy window between 0.54 to 0.74 MeV, selected using the dominant scintillation light, we have measured 10 887_{-2103}^{+2386}(stat)±947(syst) (68% confidence interval) solar neutrinos out of 19 904 total events. This corresponds to a ^{7}Be neutrino interaction rate of 51.6_{-12.5}^{+13.9}  counts/(day·100  ton), which is in agreement with the standard solar model predictions and the previous spectroscopic results of Borexino. The no-neutrino hypothesis can be excluded with >5σ confidence level. For the first time, we have demonstrated the possibility of utilizing the directional Cherenkov information for sub-MeV solar neutrinos, in a large-scale, high light yield liquid scintillator detector. This measurement provides an experimental proof of principle for future hybrid event reconstruction using both Cherenkov and scintillation signatures simultaneously.

Finding Biomarkers in Antioxidant Molecular Mechanisms for Ensuring Food Safety of Bivalves Threatened by Marine Pollution

Aquaculture production as an important source of protein for our diet is sure to continue in the coming years. However, marine pollution will also likely give rise to serious problems for the food safety of molluscs. Seafood is widely recognized for its high nutritional value in our diet, leading to major health benefits. However, the threat of marine pollution including heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants and other emerging pollutants is of ever-growing importance and seafood safety may not be guaranteed. New approaches for the search of biomarkers would help us to monitor pollutants and move towards a more global point of view; protocols for the aquaculture industry would also be improved. Rapid and accurate detection of food safety problems in bivalves could be carried out easily by protein biomarkers. Hence, proteomic technologies could be considered as a useful tool for the discovery of protein biomarkers as a first step to improve the protocols of seafood safety. It has been demonstrated that marine pollutants are altering the bivalve proteome, affecting many biological processes and molecular functions. The main response mechanism of bivalves in a polluted marine environment is based on the antioxidant defense system against oxidative stress. All these proteomic data provided from the literature suggest that alterations in oxidative stress due to marine pollution are closely linked to robust and confident biomarkers for seafood safety.

A Review of Endoscopic Spine Surgery: Decompression for Radiculopathy

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

With this manuscript the authors sought to write a succinct review of the origins, as well as the latest advancements in endoscopic spine surgery to serve as a reference frame for physicians looking to learn this approach.

RECENT FINDINGS

At its infancy, the indications for posterolateral and transforaminal endoscopic decompression remained narrow, which prevented the procedure from gaining rapid traction during those days. However, more recently the tides have turned and an increasing number of surgeons are starting to adopt this technique given all its advantages. With the advent of higher quality camera systems and instruments, indications to use a minimally invasive option have gotten significantly broader. The most basic indication for the use of this technology is a soft disc herniation causing compromise of a neural structure that has failed to be managed successfully with non-surgical therapies. The use of endoscopic techniques provides significant advantages to patient outcomes and patient recovery. Endoscopic procedures should not be used as a blanket approach to nerve root decompression, as they certainly have limitations. Most contraindications to this procedure are relative and serve mostly as points to consider when selecting the methods to address neural compression. As these techniques become more widely accepted, we expect its reach and indications to continue to broaden and diversify. The full integration of navigation technologies will likely leapfrog this procedure into the mainstream use.

Caspase activity in post mortem muscle and its relation to cattle handling practices

BACKGROUND

Animal handling practices are one of the factors majorly affecting animal metabolism prior to slaughter. This phenomenon increases the occurrence of meat quality defects such as dark cutting-beef, causing high economical losses in the meat industry. Under this framework, the assessment of apoptosis onset in post mortem muscle was proposed as a novel approach to reveal biochemical characteristics in several Spanish bovine breeds (Asturiana de los Valles, Retinta and Rubia Gallega) managed under different production systems (intensive versus semi-extensive) and transport/lairage conditions (mixing versus not mixing with unfamiliar animals). To do so, the activities of initiator caspase 9 and executioner caspases 3/7 were determined in Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle at three early post mortem times (2, 8, and 24 h).

RESULTS

Breed effect and transport/lairage conditions were the most relevant factors that influenced both caspase activities over post mortem time, showing Rubia Gallega breed a completely different behavior compared to Asturiana de los Valles and Retinta breeds. Moreover, it is postulated that apoptosis cascade is initiated via the activation of caspase 9 under hypoxic or metabolic stress followed by the activation of executioner caspases 3/7.

CONCLUSIONS

Assessment of apoptosis on post mortem muscle can be a novel approach to study the influence of animal handling on muscle metabolism and post mortem cell death and its consequences on meat quality traits. © 2021 The Authors.
