Abstract
Aim: To study the expression of histone methyltransferase SMYD1 in white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue and during differentiation of preadipocytes to white and beige phenotypes. Methods: C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet (and exposed to cold) and 3T3-L1 cells stimulated to differentiate into white and beige adipocytes were used. Results: SMYD1 expression increased in WAT of high-fat diet fed mice and in WAT and brown adipose tissue of cold-exposed mice, suggesting its role in thermogenesis. SMYD1 expression was higher in beige adipocytes than in white adipocytes, and its silencing leads to a decrease in mitochondrial content and in Pgc-1α expression. Conclusion: These data suggest a novel role for SMYD1 as a positive regulator of energy control in adipose tissue.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) This study aimed to investigate the travel distance for cancer patients treated with radiotherapy in Victoria, Australia, during a 9-year period relative to their home address. Additionally, the study aimed to quantify 'excess' travel distance where patients travelled to treatment centers that were not their closest. MATERIALS/METHODS The PRedicting the health economic IMPact of new and current CAncer Treatments (PRIMCAT) dataset was used for the study. PRIMCAT is a multi-institution research initiative taking a data-driven modelling approach to understand and forecast cancer treatment utilization in Australia. The PRIMCAT dataset is a comprehensive linked dataset including a retrospective cohort of patients 18 years and over, diagnosed with cancer included in the Victorian Cancer Registry between January 2010 to December 2019. For each patient in the cohort, data linkage includes a range of datasets managed by state and federal health departments including the Victorian Radiotherapy Minimum Dataset. A distance matrix was constructed using the Google Distance Matrix API that included driving distance between postcodes of selected patients and the postcodes of radiotherapy facilities. The centroid of each post-code was used for driving distance measurements. We first analyzed the realized travel distances of patients followed by the excess travel by patients. The excess travel was further quantified separately for public and private radiotherapy facilities. RESULTS There were 86,408 unique patient-radiotherapy courses available and of sufficient data quality to analyze. Patients travelled an average of 42.5km (s.d. = 72.2km) one-way, with a median travel distance of 16.5km. The largest distance travelled was 723km with 95% of patients travelling between 0km and 257km. Of the patients who received radiotherapy in a public facility, 44.3% travelled to a facility that was not their closest public facility. The average excess travel of these patients was 26.8km, with the median excess travel being 13.6km. Additionally, of patients who received care in a public facility, 47.4% travelled past a closer private facility. The average excess travel distance of these patients was 23.1km and the median excess travel was 11.5km. In the case of patients who received radiotherapy at a private facility, 92.8% travelled to a clinic that was not their closest. The average excess of these patients was 36.6km with a median excess travel distance of 15.6km. CONCLUSION Access to radiotherapy facilities remains unequal in Victoria with some patients having to travel significantly greater distances than average. This significant travel may require patients to take time off work or live away from home presenting additional financial challenges. The reasons for the large travel distances and any excess travel have not yet been identified but will be the subject of further study.

Abstract
We analyze the propagation of excitons in a d-dimensional lattice with power-law hopping ∝1/r^{α} in the presence of dephasing, described by a generalized Haken-Strobl-Reineker model. We show that in the strong dephasing (quantum Zeno) regime the dynamics is described by a classical master equation for an exclusion process with long jumps. In this limit, we analytically compute the spatial distribution, whose shape changes at a critical value of the decay exponent α_{cr}=(d+2)/2. The exciton always diffuses anomalously: a superdiffusive motion is associated to a Lévy stable distribution with long-range algebraic tails for α≤α_{cr}, while for α>α_{cr} the distribution corresponds to a surprising mixed Gaussian profile with long-range algebraic tails, leading to the coexistence of short-range diffusion and long-range Lévy flights. In the many-exciton case, we demonstrate that, starting from a domain-wall exciton profile, algebraic tails appear in the distributions for any α, which affects thermalization: the longer the hopping range, the faster equilibrium is reached. Our results are directly relevant to experiments with cold trapped ions, Rydberg atoms, and supramolecular dye aggregates. They provide a way to realize an exclusion process with long jumps experimentally.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a set of physical, psychological, and emotional symptoms that occur during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. The etiopathogenesis of this condition is not fully understood, and several studies suggest a possible role of environmental factors, such as diet. The aim of this work was to investigate the relationship between dietary habits and the occurrence and severity of PMS. METHODS AND RESULTS Forty-seven women were enrolled in the study. Participants were asked to complete the Daily Record of Severity of Problems (DRSP) to diagnose PMS and to complete a three-day food record during the perimenstrual phase. Thirty women completed the study (16 with PMS and 14 controls). An analysis of the food diaries revealed no differences between the women with PMS and the control subjects in terms of total energy intake (1649 vs. 1570 kcal/day), diet composition, and the consumption of macro- or micronutrients, except for copper, whose consumption was higher in women with PMS than in the control subjects (1.27 ± 0.51 vs. 0.94 ± 0.49 mg/d, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The data presented here are very preliminary, and only a significant difference in copper intake was found when comparing women with PMS and controls. Larger studies are needed to better define how diet may contribute to the exacerbation of the psychological and somatic symptoms associated with PMS and whether PMS itself may influence macro- or micronutrient intake by changing dietary habits.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common endocrine malignancy worldwide and its incidence has increased dramatically in recent years. In parallel, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has also increased, suggesting a possible link between these two diseases. Indeed, low-grade chronic inflammation, altered cytokine levels, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and hormonal changes that occur in obese patients are all factors that contribute to the occurrence and growth of TC. In this review, the most recent evidence supporting the potential role of the mechanisms linking obesity to TC will be discussed.

Abstract
The incidence of obesity has dramatically increased over the last decades. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the possible association between the pandemics of obesity and some endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), termed “obesogens”. These are a heterogeneous group of exogenous compounds that can interfere in the endocrine regulation of energy metabolism and adipose tissue structure. Oral intake, inhalation, and dermal absorption represent the major sources of human exposure to these EDCs. Recently, epigenetic changes such as the methylation of cytosine residues on DNA, post-translational modification of histones, and microRNA expression have been considered to act as an intermediary between deleterious effects of EDCs and obesity development in susceptible individuals. Specifically, EDCs exposure during early-life development can detrimentally affect individuals via inducing epigenetic modifications that can permanently change the epigenome in the germline, enabling changes to be transmitted to the next generations and predisposing them to a multitude of diseases. The purpose of this review is to analyze the epigenetic alterations putatively induced by chemical exposures and their ability to interfere with the control of energy metabolism and adipose tissue regulation, resulting in imbalances in the control of body weight, which can lead to obesity.

Abstract
Many studies investigating the transcriptional control of adipogenesis have been published so far; recently the research is focusing on the role of epigenetic mechanisms in regulating the process of adipocyte development. Histone-modifying enzymes and the histone tails post-transcriptional modifications catalyzed by them, are fundamentally involved in the epigenetic regulation of adipogenesis. In our review, we will discuss recent advances in epigenomic regulation of adipogenesis with a focus on histone-modifying enzymes implicated in the various phases of adipocytes differentiation process from mesenchymal stem cells to mature adipocytes. Understanding adipogenesis, may provide new ways to treat obesity and related metabolic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Dietary choices are influenced by several factors including physiological, social, or genetic factors. Among these, flavor is the most important determinant modulating food preferences. The aim of the present study was to assess flavor identification abilities in patients with obesity (Ob) in comparison with matched normal weight (NW) and over-weight (OW) subjects using a specific and validated chemosensory test. METHODS AND RESULTS The flavor test was administered to 140 Ob patients recruited in the obesity outpatient Unit at the Federico II University hospital and to the same number of NW and OW subjects matched by sex, age, and smoking habit. Flavor score (FS) inversely correlated with BMI. Median [Q1; Q3] FS was significantly higher in NW (14.5 [12; 16]) than in Ob (13 [10; 15] p < 0.001) and not significantly different from OW (14 [12; 16]) individuals. FS was also higher in OW than in Ob subjects (p < 0.005). When separated according to age quartiles, the BMI-related differences in FS were still significant in younger quartiles, while they were abolished in the older. CONCLUSIONS BMI is a critical factor modulating flavor identification, particularly in young subjects. Further investigations are needed to explore the precise mechanism and the causal relationship between body weight and olfactory dysfunctions. CLINICALTRIAL ID NCT03506074.

Abstract
Often we don't see alcohol abuse among adolescents, but this kind of drug, easy to find, could be used to trying their limits. Contemporary group has an important role in the habit of drinking. Often family don't think that it's real problem and it's important that paediatrician grasp this dangerous signals.

Abstract
The kids, observing the relationship of their parents, are learning from them. Today the home is less home for everyone. At home you are eating, you are learning, especially you are watching a lot of TV. Often there is non a lot of trust between each other. Because of this the conversation is necessary and not the control of the adolescent secretly.

Abstract
We know the young's problem often depended to family and to society. In these years we have seen important changes of the family, that is no more a "patriarchal family" but is a "nuclear family". In general we can say that there is a change of the social levels of the family; in particular the Mass-media (especially television-set) are the most important factors responsible of these changes in fact they block the dialogue between family's members. In Italy we can found about 4.500.000 of adolescents (with age between 14 and 20 years). If we observe recent epidemiological data, we can suppose that: about 500.000 of young men have or will have problems that block them to live serenely their adolescence about 70.000 of young men have had a so important problem than they have a psychiatric personality in the future about 4.000 of young men will die for suicide, drugs or for road's incidences. For adolescents is necessary a doctor with multiple competence. We think that this doctor can be pediatrician because he is the doctor that visit children from neonatal age and, for this reason, ha can identify the "family with problems". In conclusion we can say that the pediatrician could say to adolescent's patents that "it is born a new child" with personal idea and with different attitudes, for these reason they must change the rules that they used before puberty because now the same rules are no more valid!

Abstract
Computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resolution imaging (MRI) are the medical imaging modalities to deliver cross-sectional images of the human body. In the last decade, CT has become the most frequently used imaging modality for the evaluation of the jaw for dental implants. Furthermore, image reformatting software has been developed in order to obtain a correct preoperative diagnosis and treatment planning regarding osseointegrated implants. Previous work has shown that CT images are affected by a distortion ration from 0% to 6%. This might be due to the alignment of the patient during scanning, to his/her movements, or possibly to the saturation of pixels composing the image. In order to solve the former problem, intraoral stents can be used to center the patient's head perpendicular to the axis of the implant to be inserted. However, if more than one implant must be placed - possibly with very different axes - it would be necessary to acquire the corresponding number of tomograms, each perpendicular to the axis of one planned tooth. Obviously, it would be better not to expose the patient to multiple CT scanning. In this work, we present a software approach for enhancing implants surgery planning in order to obtain exact morphological measurements of the bone and planned teeth with a single CT acquisition. This is achieved by applying image-processing techniques to the original CT images, in order to produce new Ct images lying on different planes, and possibly perpendicular to a different tooth. The resulting software system (Dental/Vox) has been implemented in C+ + and runs on Intel-based personal computers under the Windows operating systems. DentalVox ensures better mechanical results in the design and planning of a dental implant compared to other, similar software tools; it can reconstruct axial (and panorex and cross-sectional) images once any direction is chosen. This makes it possible to implant a mechanically and esthetically superior prothesis in the underlying gnathic morphology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Scintigraphy is regarded as the "gold standard" procedure in measuring gastric emptying (GE) rates. 13C-acetate breath test (ABT), which already has been validated in adults, is a noninvasive and nonradioactive alternative method. The aim of the current study was to validate ABT against technetium Tc 99m scintigraphy in children affected by delayed GE. METHODS Sixty children were recruited and divided into 2 groups: group A, 30 healthy controls; group B, 30 patients with gastroesophageal reflux, and scintigraphy-documented DGE (15 neurologically impaired). After an overnight fast, all of them underwent ABT using 25 to 150 mg 13C-acetate. Breath samples were obtained at baseline and then every 10 minutes for 2 hours. The 13CO2 to 12CO2 ratio in breath samples was analysed by isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Data are expressed as follows: time of peak 13C exhalation (tP13CO2b) and half emptying time in ABT (t(1/2b)), and scintigraphy half emptying time (t(1/2s)). RESULTS In controls tP13CO2b was 37 +/- 13 minutes and t(1/2b) 74 +/- 12 minutes. In patients tP13CO2b and t(1/2b) were, respectively, 65 +/- 26 minutes and 104 +/- 18 minutes t(1/2s) was 91 +/- 21 minutes. In group B tP13CO2b and t(1/2b) were delayed significantly compared with controls, respectively, P < .03 and P < .01. In group B significant correlation between t(1/2s) and t(1/2b) was noted (r1 = 0.97). A close correlation was also observed between t(1/2s) and tP13CO2b (r2 = 0.95). CONCLUSION The 13C ABT is an easy, reliable, and less expensive procedure for measuring GE, and its results closely correlate with those of scintigraphy in a paediatric population.

Abstract
The Pediatrician is daily in contact with a large number of adolescents, and therefore is able to recognize those who display behavioural problems. The Pediatrician is often asked for advice in order to solve practical problems such as the choice of school, the practice of sports, ecc. His advice is somehow conditioned by his previous experiences as an adolescent and, if he is a parent himself, by his present familial situation. In the last years, the problems of the adolescents and the fears of their parents have changed, the main concern being today the one for work, due to the high levels of unemployment and underemployment affecting our society. In this situation, some of the most frequent attitudes of parents towards adolescents seem to be erroneous, such as asking them for social success at any cost (e.g. attending unwelcome studies or performing inappropriate sports). This leads to failures that often prove to be unbearable for young people not trained to face and overcome frustration. Parents also seem often to underestimate the possibility of their own "child" being involved in episodes of hooliganism, shoplifting, violence like the ones daily described by the media. The excessive idealization of adolescents by their parents seems to be one of the main causes of this situation. The Pediatrician can intervene with advice, in order to orientate adolescents towards realistic life objectives and a satisfactory development of their personality.

Abstract
The Authors studied the possibility of using some dip sticks visual for urinalysis. One hundred of urine samples have been analyzed at the beginning with the instrumental laboratory analytical system and then with the dip sticks visual; the results put in evidence that there is a real discrepancy as far as glucose is concerned. Glucose is overestimated in dip sticks visual method. Bilirubin, blood and proteins are in a decreasing order the most different items. Concerning to pH the results have been comparable. Specific weight cannot be compared to the laboratory method, on the other hand it can be used for screening. On the whole the Authors are quite satisfied about dip sticks visual method; it can be used in order to accelerate diagnosis and avoid pre-analytical mistakes.

Abstract
Infectious diarrhea is a common disorder in children in Italy, which may lead to hospitalization especially during infancy. In order to obtain data about epidemiology and clinic pictures of acute diarrhea, the carts of 1295 paediatric outpatients, hospitalized for this pathology in the time between 1990-1996 at the Children's Hospital "Meyer" of Florence, were analyzed. An offending organism could be isolate in 43.3% of patients; Rotaviruses are the leading cause of diarrhea, followed by salmonella spp. Furthermore the role of Campylobacter as common bacterial pathogen worldwide has been clarified.

Abstract
Great changes have occurred in the adolescent behaviour in the last twenty years; this has caused a great increase in the number of the transmitted by sexual intercourse diseases. These, along with the adolescent habits changing, have so widely spread among young people, that one third of the recorded case are actually referred to this group of age. So, a matter of great social interest, which would require a common effort by the adolescents' families, the teachers and by the adolescents themselves, to be faced in the most proper way, has arisen. But the greatest commitment is asked for to the specialized in infectious diseases pediatricians, who are called to state the best strategy to efficaciously fight adolescents' STD. Pediatricians' specific competence and experience can build up the major security to face the prevention and diagnostic matters and their therapy as well.

Abstract
Our experiences at the "Centro di Profilassi Antirabbica" of the "Dipartimento di Pediatria" suggest to us some thoughts: though the seriousness of the lesions is important also for the patient's aestethics, mostly for girls, the physician must always take into consideration the infectious consequences of the bite itself. Among these bacterial infections mostly frequent enough are those overlapping the deepest wounds as the bites of cates are. Therefore adequate early preventive attendances (within the 24 hours) are necessary. The importance of prevention against rabies, luckily very rare in our country, but to be always afraid of and to be always taken into consideration because of its emotional impact, is to be highlighted.

Abstract
The clinical, radiological and anatomo-evolutive pictures of this syndrome are typical. It is suggested that cases are more frequent than is generally thought and that their recognition is delayed on account of the considerable time that often elapses before repeated infection of the respiratory system, particularly the middle lobe, results in the onset of the syndrome.

Abstract
Adolescent had in the past rarely been affected by sexually transmitted infections. Nowadays they must be considered possibly running such risks as they begin their sexual activity earlier or do not know enough about these kinds of troubles. Therefore a valid primary prevention is necessary based upon correct information.

Abstract
During these past years pediatricians have been more and more interested to the adolescent's matters. Undoubtedly adolescent's behavioural disturbances are to be bound to a childhood spent in a wrong way, and contemporarily managed by parents who, despite their maximum dedication, have not "trained" their children according to specific "fundamentals", probably because also they themselves, when children, have not been submitted to them.

Abstract
Feeding children involves a mutual interaction between their parents and them; interaction in which everyone is influenced by and, contemporarily, influences the others. In fact the act of administering food is considered to be fundamental inside the relationship between the mother and her child. Such a relationship can supply consequences that are important for the children's physical, emotional and cognitive growth, particularly in their first two years of life. Therefore, any time a child arrives at the pediatrician's attention showing a nourishment matter, and anamnesis and examination are indicative of a lack of evidence that may address to a physical disease, the next zone to be indagated must be the existing relationship between the child and his family.

Abstract
Not very carefully taking into account a possible psychosomatic pathology in children can, in many occasions, cause the pediatrician to make seriously wrong diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic evaluations. As this is valid at any age, the authors affirm that particularly at the evolutive age, and since the first months of life, many circumstances occur in which the functional trouble can sometimes a serious organic pathology.

Abstract
The authors review the origins and the metabolism of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids and particularly consider the implications of desaturase's deficiency and of the usual imbalanced supply of fatty acids in the diet of children. The peculiarity of the fatty acids is to be, while proteins express the genome, the expression of the diet on the cell's membranes, with a subtle influence of an enzyme's equipment varying during the life. All that gains an extraordinary relief, because the omega-6 and omega-3, and constituents of the membranes, are precursors of different series of prostaglandins, which are wholebody mediators of multiple phenomenons like inflammation, immunity, allergy, platelet aggregation, ecc. The authors point how a balanced diet or a supplementation with omega-3, omega-6 and PUFA can help a good development especially of the nervous tissue and of the mucosal barrier. Furthermore modulating the above physiopathological mechanism, also in children could influence recurrent and chronic diseases.
