Abstract
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes COVID-19 disease. Through its viral spike (S) protein, the virus enters and infects epithelial cells by utilizing angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 as a host cell's receptor protein. The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on global public health and economies. Although various effective vaccinations and medications are now available to prevent and treat COVID-19, natural compounds derived from medicinal plants, particularly flavonoids, demonstrated therapeutic potential to treat COVID-19 disease. Flavonoids exhibit dual antiviral mechanisms: direct interference with viral invasion and inhibition of replication. Specifically, they target key viral molecules, particularly viral proteases, involved in infection. These compounds showcase significant immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, effectively inhibiting various inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, emerging evidence supports the potential of flavonoids to mitigate the progression of COVID-19 in individuals with obesity by positively influencing lipid metabolism. This review aims to elucidate the molecular structure of SARS-CoV-2 and the underlying mechanism of action of flavonoids on the virus. This study evaluates the potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 properties exhibited by flavonoid compounds, with a specific interest in their structure and mechanisms of action, as therapeutic applications for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Nevertheless, a significant portion of existing knowledge is based on theoretical frameworks and findings derived from in vitro investigations. Further research is required to better assess the effectiveness of flavonoids in combating SARS-CoV-2, with a particular emphasis on in vivo and clinical investigations.

Abstract
Swan mussels (Anodonta cygnea) have been suggested as suitable bioindicators for the presence of pollutants in the environment. Application of the physiological and behavioral markers in these sessile species can be beneficial for environmental monitoring. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between the behavioral disorders of movement and siphoning associated with the inhibition of tissue Acetylcholinesterase (AChE). For experiments, overally 120 bivalves of Anodonta cygnea (mean total length 80.33 ± 6.7 mm) were transported from the agricultural drains and canals in Sari county (Mazandaran Province, Iran) to our laboratory. First, the LC50-96 h of diazinon was estimated according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD 1992) guideline with static water conditions. The sub-lethal toxicity pesticide experiments were conducted on the basis of the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) and the maximum acceptable toxicant concentration (MATC). The LC50-96 h, LOEC, and MATC values of diazinon were 85.2, 42.1, and 8.5 mg L- 1, respectively. Based on the observations of mussels' movement, the burrowing and displacement decreased with the concentration of toxicant in water. Moreover, the presence of diazinon in water and its exposure to experimental animals significantly reduces their siphoning rate. The RDA showed that the AChE activity had a higher correlation with the siphoning behavior than the movement behavior. The comparison of enzyme activity at different exposure and recovery times showed that there was a significant difference among the groups affected by the consumed pesticide (p = 0.001, between contrasts). The most remarkable morphometric characteristic was the siphon opening that was inversely correlated with the enzymatic activity. Studies in bioethics might benefit from paying attention to these traits that are directly related to the level of toxicity and behavioral adaptations required for animal survival.

Abstract
In this historical context, the Mediterranean Sea faces an increasing threat from emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, heavy metals, pesticides and microplastics, which pose a serious risk to the environment and human health. In this regard, aquatic invertebrates and fish are particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of these pollutants, and several species have been identified as bio-indicators for their detection. Among these, bivalve molluscs and elasmobranchs are now widely used as bio-indicators to accurately assess the effects of contaminants. The study focuses on the catshark Scyliorhinus canicular and on the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. The first one is a useful indicator of localised contamination levels due to its exposure to pollutants that accumulate on the seabed. Moreover, it has a high trophic position and plays an important role in the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem. The bivalve mollusc Mytilus galloprovincialis, on the other hand, being a filter-feeding organism, can acquire and bioaccumulate foreign particles present in its environment. Additionally, because it is also a species of commercial interest, it has a direct impact on human health. In conclusion, the increasing presence of emerging pollutants in the Mediterranean Sea is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. Bivalve molluscs and elasmobranchs are two examples of bio-indicators that must be used to precisely determine the effects of these pollutants on the marine ecosystem and human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The long-term impact of gadolinium retention in the dentate nuclei of patients undergoing administration of seriate gadolinium-based contrast agents is still widely unexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of gadolinium retention on motor and cognitive disability in patients with MS during long-term follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective study, clinical data were obtained from patients with MS followed in a single center from 2013 to 2022 at different time points. These included the Expanded Disability Status Scale score to evaluate motor impairment and the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS battery to investigate cognitive performances and their respective changes with time. The association with qualitative and quantitative MR imaging signs of gadolinium retention (namely, the presence of dentate nuclei T1-weighted hyperintensity and changes in longitudinal relaxation R1 maps, respectively) was probed using different General Linear Models and regression analyses. RESULTS No significant differences in motor or cognitive symptoms emerged between patients showing dentate nuclei hyperintensity and those without visible changes on T1WIs (P = .14 and 0.92, respectively). When we tested possible relationships between quantitative dentate nuclei R1 values and both motor and cognitive symptoms, separately, the regression models including demographic, clinical, and MR imaging features explained 40.5% and 16.5% of the variance, respectively, without any significant effect of dentate nuclei R1 values (P = .21 and 0.30, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that gadolinium retention in the brains of patients with MS is not associated with long-term motor or cognitive outcomes.

Abstract
The quantification of capture-related physiological stress is an important factor when assessing the potential for post-release survival in sharks that are incidentally captured. In the absence of these biological data and when the post-release fate is unknown, effective management plans cannot be formulated and may lead to highly susceptible shark populations being overfished. Here, we measured the levels of lactate, glucose, alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), Ca2+, Na+ K+,Cl - Mg 2+ and Pi in the plasma of mature and immature lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula, herein dogfish) which were incidentally captured at two depths (shallow: 50-200 m, and deep: 201-500 m) by bottom trawl off the coast of southern Sicily. These values were used as biomarkers and physiological indicators of the secondary stress response associated with capture. This study found that dogfish captured in deeper waters (below 200 m) had elevated levels of glucose, Na+, Ca2+ and K+ compared to those inhabiting depths less than <200 m. We hypothesize that the elevated levels of physiological stress in dogfish captured at greater depths may be related to the prolonged duration of the interactions with the fishing gear in the area off southern Sicily. Our findings provide new data on the capture-related stress in dogfish and increase the understanding of the potential for post-release survival in sharks captured at two depths by bottom trawl, information that is important for improving the general management plans for the fishery. However, our PC Analysis results revealed that Maturity have a positive contribution from the sample weight, sample length, ALT, AST and a negative contribution from Pi.

Abstract
The composition of free amino acids (FAAs) in seafood products contributes to characterizing their flavor, as well as freshness and quality during storage. Deep-water rose shrimps (Parapenaues longirostris, Lucas, 1846) (DWRS) are being increasingly harvested in the Mediterranean Sea, and the captured specimens are quickly frozen onboard fishing trawlers to preserve freshness and post-harvest quality. Here, we quantified the FAA profiles of DWRS packaged using five methods: (1) 100% N2; (2) vacuum; (3) 50% N2 + 50% CO2; (4) commercial anhydrous sodium sulfite; and (5) air (control). All samples were quickly frozen at -35°C and stored for 12 months at -18°C. Arginine (661 mg/100 g), proline (538 mg/100 g), and glycine (424 mg/100 g) were the most abundant FAAs, whereas the least abundant were tyrosine (67 mg/100 g), histidine (58 mg/100 g), and aspartic acid (34 mg/100 g). FAAs in all samples gradually (and significantly) increased in the first 6 to 8 months of storage, and then significantly decreased. The sodium sulfite treatment (Method 4) kept the initial FAA contents lower than the other treatments, due to the strong antioxidant action of sulfite agents. Interestingly, similar results were obtained for vacuum packaging (Method 2). Thus, combining frozen storage with vacuum packaging represents an alternative approach to chemical additives in shrimp/prawn processing to meet the increasing demand for high-quality seafood products with long shelf-life.

Abstract
Personal care products (PCPs) are part of the large and growing family of emerging contaminants (ECs). Many daily products such as sunscreens, toothpaste, make-up products, perfume, and others, fall under this definition, and their use is increasing exponentially. Furthermore, the degradation of some components of these products is limited. Indeed, they are able to easily reach and accumulate in aquatic systems, representing a new class of contaminants. Moreover, due to their chemical properties, they can interfere at different biological levels, and for this reason, they need to be thoroughly investigated. We have reviewed the literature on PCPs, with a special focus on the adverse effects on the freshwater zebrafish (Danio rerio). The aim of this work is to provide a careful assessment of the toxicity of these compounds, in order to raise awareness for more conscious and responsible use.

Abstract
Recent European Union (EU) regulations have been introduced to discourage the capture of undersized specimens with the aim of reducing the bycatch mortality imposed by commercial fisheries. We argue that we still lack accurate data regarding basic information required to properly implement these regulations for most Mediterranean ecosystems, including the true mortality imposed by fisheries, escape rates from fishing gears and the capability of specimens to survive following discard. We suggest that additional reliance on physiological biomarkers could assist in all aspects of the data collection required to support implementation of the EU discard ban (aka landing obligation), particularly in determining which species should receive special dispensation from this policy. Ideally, this new approach, here termed the 'Fisheries Environmental and Physiological Stress Analysis' (FEPSA), would become an important step for any fish stock assessment within the ecosystem approach to fisheries management and the recognition of Good Environmental Status, as established by the EU in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC). In particular, the main goal of FEPSA would be applying the study of physiological stressors to exploited stocks to estimate the so-called collateral fishing mortality, which includes the mortality experienced by fish that escape after interacting with fishing gears or that are discarded, with some degree of injury or physiological stress. The approach outlined here, which is described for bottom trawls but adaptable to any other type of fishing gear, is not a trivial undertaking but is a requirement for collecting the data required by recent EU fisheries policies. While we agree that the threats to marine biodiversity posed by fishing and associated discard practices require strong policy interventions, we emphasize that the research programs needed to support such initiatives, including the landing obligation, should be given equal priority. This is particularly true for Mediterranean fisheries, which are at a complex intersection of jurisdictional boundaries, numerous additional ecosystem threats including widespread pollution, thermal variation and hypoxia, and are historically understudied as compared to fisheries and species in more northern climates.

Abstract
Heavy metals and PAHs were measured in animal foodstuffs from Augusta-Melilli-Priolo area in order to evaluate the potential human health risk associated to their consumption. All heavy metals were detected in seafood products while most of them were 1 for baby, children and teenagers, indicating a non-carcinogenic risk for these age categories by seafood ingestion. The CRAs overcame 1*10-5 for almost age categories (except "baby") and for elderly, by seafood and beef ingestions respectively. Moreover, the MOE for PAHs showed a certain cancer risk for "baby" related to cow milk ingestion.

Abstract
Aliphatic hydrocarbon levels were determined by the GC/MS technique in fish livers of Engraulis encrasicolus (Ee) and Trachurus trachurus (Tt), collected from a particular area of the Mediterranean Sea, called GSA 10, which is located exactly in Tyrrhenian Sea between Campania coast and North Sicily coast. The aim was to evaluate their potential use as specific bioindicators towards this class of contaminants. Both Tt and Ee are considered to be pollution monitoring bioindicators, due to their dominance in marine communities and economic fishing interest. Ee showed a higher tendency to bioaccumulate TAHs, due to the lower quantity of fatty acids in liver tissues with respect to Tt. The area under study has been characterised a) chemically with the acquisition of temperature, oxygen and salinity profiles along the water column, and b) ecologically with the determination of amino acid contents in fish eyes, in order to gain information on the adaptation to environmental changes. Moreover, specific activities of two hydrolytic enzymes, such as alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase in fish epidermal mucus, together with lactate in blood plasma and cortisol levels, have been investigated for the first time, in order to obtain insights into the effects of hydrocarbons on animal welfare. A multiple co-inertia analysis was also applied to chemical and environmental parameters, in order to explore any possible correlation between different variables. The multivariate approach showed a clear spatial distribution between environmental and chemical variables in Ee, whilst there was an absence of a spatial trend in Tt. Moreover, the chemometric analysis showed a very high correlation between amino acid profiles and environmental variables for both species, confirming the possibility of being used as ecological welfare indices for short-term environmental variations.

Abstract
Trace elements were measured in the edible tissues of target marine species (Sardina pilchardus, Mullus barbatus, Mullus surmuletus, Merluccius merluccius and Parapenaeus longirostris) collected in some of the main ports of the Sicilian coast (southern Italy) in order to evaluate the potential human health risk associated to their consumption. Cadmium, Pb and Hg were below the tolerable limits reported by the European Union in foodstuffs (Commission Regulation (EC) 1881/2006) except for Hg in P. longirostris from one sampling site. The health risk for consumers was assessed both for adults and children calculating the estimated weekly intake (EWI), the target hazard quotient (THQ) and the lifetime cancer risk (CR) for each element. The EWI did not exceed the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) recommended by the European Food Safety Authority and THQs were < 1 in most cases. Further, the probabilistic distributions of health hazard were evaluated through Monte-Carlo simulation which confirmed a non-carcinogenic risk. With some exceptions related to As exposure, the results obtained definitively confirm the goodness of the fishery commercial resources in one of the most important seafood market of the central Mediterranean Sea and represent a positive data for the assessment of the good environmental status for descriptor 9 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive in this area of the basin.

Abstract
A comparative study was performed to identify differences in the amino acid composition of the eyes from zebrafish (Danio rerio) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) larvae and their link to the environmental adaption of the species. Amino acids in the acidic hydrolysates of eyes from 11 zebrafish and 12 sardine were determined with the use of high-performance liquid chromatography involving precolumn derivatization with ortho-phthalaldehyde. Differences in the content of most amino acids were detected between zebrafish and sardine. These amino acids were aspartate, glutamate, serine, glycine, threonine, arginine, methionine, valine, phenylalanine, isoleucine, leucine and lysine. Of particular note, the percentage of methionine in zebrafish eyes was much higher than that in sardine, whereas the opposite was observed for glutamate and glycine. These results indicate that zebrafish and sardine likely have experienced differences in adaptation to environmental changes. We suggest that the amino acid composition of eyes represents a powerful tool to discriminate between species characterized by different lifestyle and inhabiting different environments.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to develop a new method to determine the mercury (Hg) concentrations in phosphate rock using a dedicated analytical instrument (the DMA80 Tricell by Milestone) that employs an integrated sequence of thermal decomposition followed by catalyst conversion, amalgamation and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. However, this instrument underestimates Hg concentrations when phosphorite and apatite rocks are investigated with a classic thermal decomposition treatment that complies with US EPA method 7473. Therefore, to improve the recovery of total Hg, we performed alkaline fusion digestion (AFD) directly inside the furnace of the instrument, using BCR(32) as a certified reference material (Moroccan phosphate rock--phosphorite). The salts used for the AFD were a mixture of Na2CO3, K2CO3 and Li2CO3, which melt at about 400°C, due to their ability to form a ternary eutectic and to decompose the phosphorite matrices at 700°C. By adopting this analytical approach, the Hg recovery in BCR(32) was about 100%, compared to 40% when the reference material was analysed without using the alkaline fusion salt. We suggest that the AFD allowed the decomposition of the sample matrix and that some Hg compounds linked with other functional groups may be transformed in carbonates that sublimate at lower temperatures than other Hg compounds. This original method was tested on a number of different geological samples to compare the differences between the AFD method and the thermal treatment in order to verify the working range and to check the robustness of the new approach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report about 6 new patients with round atelectasis of the lung, 1 of them professionally exposed to asbestos and another to silicates. RESULTS The patients, 5 males and 1 female, presented with a peripheral, rounded pulmonary opacity, simulating a neoplasm. The examination of the surgical specimen revealed a pleuritis, with multiple pleural folding: the underlying lung parenchima was compressed, but otherwise unremarkable. CONCLUSIONS Round atelectasis is relatively unusual for the pathologist. However, the correct diagnosis is potentially important, because the lesion can be the sign of a significant asbestos exposure.

Abstract
Fluconazole susceptibility was tested in 385 clinical yeast isolates (285 Candida albicans, 38 C. glabrata, 31 C. tropicalis, 31 other Candida subsp.) using the agar disk diffusion test. Yeasts were collected from specimens obtained from outpatients (69) and inpatients (intensive care unit: 79 isolates, major burn unit: 31 isolates, hematology ward: 45 isolates, gynecology ward: 67 isolates, other wards: 94 isolates). Three hundred and fifty-six (92%) yeast isolates showed to be susceptible, 18 (5%) were susceptible dose-dependent, and 10 (3%) were resistant to fluconazole. Of the resistant group, 3 isolates were C.albicans, while seven were Candida non-albicans (2 C. rugosa, 2 C. humicola, 1 C. tropicalis, 1 C. ciferrii, 1 C. glabrata). The disk-diffusion method was easy to perform and there were no difficulties in the interpretation of inhibition zone diameters. Fluconazole maintained a good activity against Candida spp despite its extensive use for the prophylaxis and treatment of fungal infections.

Abstract
An electro-oculographic study has been performed in 11 patients affected by hereditary degenerative ataxias (5 Friedreich's ataxias, 4 olivopontocerebellar atrophies and 2 late onset cerebellar ataxias). Electrooculographic records were obtained during saccades, pursuit movements and fixed gaze. Saccadic latency, saccadic speed and morphologic features were studied. In Friedreich's ataxia ocular motility was less accurate than in olivopontocerebellar atrophy and in late onset cerebellar ataxia.

Abstract
Thirty vasculopathic subjects with hyperlipoproteinemia (18) and/or diabetes (22) underwent a clinical double-blind study in order to evaluate the effect of sulodexide on lipid and hemorheologic parameters. The experimental design consisted of a first 20-day i.m. therapeutic period with either sulodexide (300 Lipasemic Units twice daily via intramuscular route) or placebo and the following 70 days with the active compound for both groups at the same posology. Results obtained demonstrated that sulodexide yields a hypotriglyceridemic effect on type IV hyperlipoproteinemia and hypofibrinogenic effect, as well. Moreover, this compound exerted a beneficial effect on HDL Cholesterol levels and on the antithrombin III activity by increasing both parameters significantly. Signs and symptoms were alleviated, particularly in the most severe cases of peripheral vascular disease. Insignificant and slight changes were observed at the end of treatments as regards the efficacy of the two administration routes, the i.m. one being more efficacious on lipid parameters and faster acting. No side effects or intolerance were observed during the different periods of the trial.
