Search for γ-Ray Line Signals from Dark Matter Annihilations in the Inner Galactic Halo from 10 Years of Observations with H.E.S.S

Spectral lines are among the most powerful signatures for dark matter (DM) annihilation searches in very-high-energy γ rays. The central region of the Milky Way halo is one of the most promising targets given its large amount of DM and proximity to Earth. We report on a search for a monoenergetic spectral line from self-annihilations of DM particles in the energy range from 300 GeV to 70 TeV using a two-dimensional maximum likelihood method taking advantage of both the spectral and spatial features of the signal versus background. The analysis makes use of Galactic center observations accumulated over ten years (2004-2014) with the H.E.S.S. array of ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. No significant γ-ray excess above the background is found. We derive upper limits on the annihilation cross section ⟨σv⟩ for monoenergetic DM lines at the level of 4×10^{-28}  cm^{3} s^{-1} at 1 TeV, assuming an Einasto DM profile for the Milky Way halo. For a DM mass of 1 TeV, they improve over the previous ones by a factor of 6. The present constraints are the strongest obtained so far for DM particles in the mass range 300 GeV-70 TeV. Ground-based γ-ray observations have reached sufficient sensitivity to explore relevant velocity-averaged cross sections for DM annihilation into two γ-ray photons at the level expected from the thermal relic density for TeV DM particles.

H.E.S.S. Limits on Linelike Dark Matter Signatures in the 100 GeV to 2 TeV Energy Range Close to the Galactic Center

A search for dark matter linelike signals iss performed in the vicinity of the Galactic Center by the H.E.S.S. experiment on observational data taken in 2014. An unbinned likelihood analysis iss developed to improve the sensitivity to linelike signals. The upgraded analysis along with newer data extend the energy coverage of the previous measurement down to 100 GeV. The 18 h of data collected with the H.E.S.S. array allow one to rule out at 95% C.L. the presence of a 130 GeV line (at l=-1.5°, b=0° and for a dark matter profile centered at this location) previously reported in Fermi-LAT data. This new analysis overlaps significantly in energy with previous Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S.

RESULTS

No significant excess associated with dark matter annihilations was found in the energy range of 100 GeV to 2 TeV and upper limits on the gamma-ray flux and the velocity weighted annihilation cross section are derived adopting an Einasto dark matter halo profile. Expected limits for present and future large statistics H.E.S.S. observations are also given.

Search for Dark Matter Annihilations towards the Inner Galactic Halo from 10 Years of Observations with H.E.S.S

The inner region of the Milky Way halo harbors a large amount of dark matter (DM). Given its proximity, it is one of the most promising targets to look for DM. We report on a search for the annihilations of DM particles using γ-ray observations towards the inner 300 pc of the Milky Way, with the H.E.S.S. array of ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. The analysis is based on a 2D maximum likelihood method using Galactic Center (GC) data accumulated by H.E.S.S. over the last 10 years (2004-2014), and does not show any significant γ-ray signal above background. Assuming Einasto and Navarro-Frenk-White DM density profiles at the GC, we derive upper limits on the annihilation cross section ⟨σv⟩. These constraints are the strongest obtained so far in the TeV DM mass range and improve upon previous limits by a factor 5. For the Einasto profile, the constraints reach ⟨σv⟩ values of 6×10^{-26}  cm^{3} s^{-1} in the W^{+}W^{-} channel for a DM particle mass of 1.5 TeV, and 2×10^{-26}  cm^{3} s^{-1} in the τ^{+}τ^{-} channel for a 1 TeV mass. For the first time, ground-based γ-ray observations have reached sufficient sensitivity to probe ⟨σv⟩ values expected from the thermal relic density for TeV DM particles.

Dermal Fenestration With Negative Pressure Wound Therapy: A Technique for Managing Soft Tissue Injuries Associated With High-Energy Complex Foot Fractures

Military casualties can sustain complex foot fractures from blast incidents. This frequently involves the calcaneum and is commonly associated with mid-foot fracture dislocations. The foot is at risk of both compartment syndrome and the development of fracture blisters after such injuries. The amount of energy transfer and the environment in which the injury was sustained also predispose patients to potential skin necrosis and deep infection. Decompression of the compartments is a part of accepted practice in civilian trauma to reduce the risk of complications associated with significant soft tissue swelling. The traditional methods of foot fasciotomy, however, are not without significant complications. We report a simple technique of dermal fenestration combined with the use of negative pressure wound therapy, which aims to preserve the skin integrity of the foot without resorting to formal fasciotomy.

Constraints on an annihilation signal from a core of constant dark matter density around the milky way center with H.E.S.S

An annihilation signal of dark matter is searched for from the central region of the Milky Way. Data acquired in dedicated on-off observations of the Galactic center region with H.E.S.S. are analyzed for this purpose. No significant signal is found in a total of ∼9  h of on-off observations. Upper limits on the velocity averaged cross section, ⟨σv⟩, for the annihilation of dark matter particles with masses in the range of ∼300  GeV to ∼10  TeV are derived. In contrast to previous constraints derived from observations of the Galactic center region, the constraints that are derived here apply also under the assumption of a central core of constant dark matter density around the center of the Galaxy. Values of ⟨σv⟩ that are larger than 3×10^{-24}  cm^{3}/s are excluded for dark matter particles with masses between ∼1 and ∼4  TeV at 95% C.L. if the radius of the central dark matter density core does not exceed 500 pc. This is the strongest constraint that is derived on ⟨σv⟩ for annihilating TeV mass dark matter without the assumption of a centrally cusped dark matter density distribution in the search region.

The UK military experience of thoracic injury in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

INTRODUCTION

Thoracic injury during warfare is associated with a high incidence of morbidity and mortality. This study examines the pattern and mortality of thoracic wounding in the counter-insurgency conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan, and outlines the operative and decision making skills required by the modern military surgeon in the deployed hospital setting to manage these injuries.

METHODS

The UK Joint Theatre Trauma Registry was searched between 2003 and 2011 to identify all patients who sustained battle-related thoracic injuries admitted to a UK Field Hospital (Role 3). All UK soldiers, coalition forces and local civilians were included.

RESULTS

During the study period 7856 patients were admitted because of trauma, 826 (10.5%) of whom had thoracic injury. Thoracic injury-related mortality was 118/826 (14.3%). There were no differences in gender, age, coalition status and mechanism of injury between survivors and non-survivors. Survivors had a significantly higher GCS, Revised Trauma Score and systolic blood pressure on admission to a Role 3 facility. Multivariable regression analysis identified admission systolic blood pressure less than 90, severe head or abdominal injury and cardiac arrest as independent predictors of mortality.

CONCLUSIONS

Blast is the main mechanism of thoracic wounding in the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thoracic trauma in association with severe head or abdominal injuries are predictors of mortality, rather than thoracic injury alone. Deploying surgeons require training in thoracic surgery in order to be able to manage patients appropriately at Role 3.

Intra-operative correction of acidosis, coagulopathy and hypothermia in combat casualties with severe haemorrhagic shock

We assessed acidosis, coagulopathy and hypothermia, before and after surgery in 51 combat troops operated on for severe blast injury. Patients were transfused a median (IQR [range]) of 27 (17-38 [5-84]) units of red cell concentrate, 27 (16-38 [4-83]) units of plasma, 2.0 (0.5-3.5 [0-13.0]) units of cryoprecipitate and 4 (2-6 [0-17]) pools of platelets. The pH, base excess, prothrombin time and temperature increased: from 7.19 (7.10-7.29 [6.50-7.49]) to 7.45 (7.40-7.51 [7.15-7.62]); from -9.0 (-13.5 to -4.5 [-28 to -2]) mmol.l⁻¹ to 4.5 (1.0-8.0 [-7 to +11]) mmol.l⁻¹; from 18 (15-21 [9-24]) s to 14 (11-18 [9-21]) s; and from 36.1 (35.1-37.1 [33.0-38.1]) °C to 37.4 (37.0-37.9 [36.0-38.0]) °C, respectively. Contemporary intra-operative resuscitation strategies can normalise the physiological derangements caused by haemorrhagic shock.

Modification of a bifurcated stent graft for aortouniiliac endovascular aneurysm repair in a renal transplant patient

INTRODUCTION

We describe a case of aortouniiliac (AUI) endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) using combined iliac limb and bifurcated body stent graft modular system.

CASE REPORT

This technique is demonstrated in a 58-year-old man with a 6-cm abdominal aortic aneurysm suitable for EVAR. The patient has a functioning cadaveric renal transplant anastamosed to the mid right external iliac artery, an occluded left iliac system and stenosed right iliac system. The renal allograft was protected with minimal passage across the transplant artery origin using this modified approach. The patient was successfully treated with a bifurcated main body deployed within a contralateral limb endoprosthesis. Subsequent scans confirmed no endoleaks or stent migration.

CONCLUSIONS

The AUI conversion from existing Gore excluder stent graft system is safe and should be considered when faced with challenging anatomy of a pelvic renal transplant, slender access, and contralateral iliac occlusion.

Endovascular repair for left common iliac artery occlusion following blunt trauma without associated bony injury: image in vascular surgery

Common iliac artery injury (CIAI), commonly associated with pelvic fractures may present with a potentially fatal combination of haemorrhage and limb ischaemia. We report a case of isolated CIAI from blunt trauma without bony injury treated successfully using endovascular repair.

IMPACT OF LEGISLATIVE CHANGES ON PATTERNS OF ANTIPSYCHOTIC PRESCRIBING AND SELF-POISONING IN SCOTLAND: 2000-06

Recently, national guidelines have advocated greater use of atypical rather than typical antipsychotics in the treatment of schizophrenia. In addition, there have been safety concerns regarding the potential cardiotoxicity of certain antipsychotics taken in overdose. This has led regulatory authorities in the United Kingdom to restrict the use of thioridazine. The overall impact of these legislative changes on patterns of antipsychotic prescribing has received comparatively little attention. Therefore, we sought to examine the effects on community prescribing practices, and to determine whether this was accompanied by changes in patterns of antipsychotic poisoning. Between 2000-03, there was a rapid decline in the use of typical antipsychotics, whereas the use of atypical antipsychotics increased. The prevalence of atypical and typical antipsychotic prescribing has been approximately equal between 2003-06. During the same study period, hospital admissions due to typical antipsychotic poisoning also declined, however, the effects lagged behind changes in prescribing practice by 2-3 years. These data indicate that legislative changes that restrict the use of thioridazine and other typical antipsychotics are associated with a measurable reduction in the number of hospital admissions due to overdose with these agents.

Detection of bovine leukemia virus RNA in serum using the polymerase chain reaction

A method was developed for detecting bovine leukemia virus (BLV) RNA in serum samples using a pair of primers from the BLV polymerase gene in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR was able to detect 3800-7600 molecules of BLV RNA. At this level of sensitivity eleven pools of adult and one fetal bovine serum appeared free from BLV contamination.

Proviral detection and serology in bovine leukemia virus-exposed normal cattle and cattle with lymphoma

Twenty-seven cattle with lymphoma and 46 cows from a known bovine leukemia virus (BLV)-infected herd were tested for anti-BLV antibody by the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern hybridization were used to detect BLV provirus in the tumor DNA of the 27 cattle with lymphoma. The PCR was used to detect BLV provirus in the peripheral blood mononuclear cell DNA of the 46 normal known-exposed cattle. Two presumed false negative AGID test results compared to ELISA were found. Of ten cattle three years of age or less with "sporadic" forms of lymphoma, four had BLV provirus in tumor DNA, detectable by PCR. In two of these four, BLV provirus was clonally integrated based on digestion of tumor DNA with restriction enzymes followed by Southern hybridization. The BLV provirus was not detected by PCR in 5 of 17 cattle with "enzootic" lymphoma and two of these five were seronegative. Among normal BLV-exposed cows, 6.5% (3 of 46) were serologically positive and PCR negative; serologically negative and PCR positive cows occurred with the same frequency. Serological and PCR test results, when considered in all cattle (n = 73), had a concordance rate of 83.6%. Discordant test results occurred with approximately equal frequency between serologically positive and PCR negative (7 of 73, 9.6%) and serologically negative and PCR positive (5 of 73, 6.8%) groups. These data suggest that the role of BLV in some "sporadic" bovine lymphomas, previously unassociated with BLV, should be reexamined. The BLV provirus was not demonstrable in the tumor DNA from five adult cattle with lymphoma, suggesting that BLV may not be the etiological agent in all adult bovine lymphomas. The findings of persistently seronegative PCR positive and seropositive PCR negative cattle indicate that further work is needed to more fully understand the host-virus interaction. Present serological screening methods may not have sufficient sensitivity for determining BLV status in some circumstances.

Removal of O-acetylated sialic acids from rat colonic epithelial glycoproteins by cell-free extracts of rat faeces

Sterile, cell-free, extracts of freshly defaecated Wistar rat faeces in a pH 7.0 "minimal medium" contain neuraminidase(s), capable of removing sialic acids both with and without side-chain substituents from bovine submandibular mucin and rat colonic epithelial glycoproteins, and an esterase which removes O-acetyl substituents from the side chain of sialic acid residues. Studies of the removal of sialic acids from bovine submandibular mucin and rat colonic epithelial glycoproteins indicated that (i) the faecal enzymes removed a greater proportion of the sialic acid of both the de-O-acetylated and native glycoproteins than was removed with Vibrio cholera neuraminidase, (ii) sialic acids were removed more rapidly from de-O-acetylated glycoproteins, and (iii) the resistance to removal of sialic acids was apparently dependent at least in part upon the O-acetyl sialic acid content of the substrate.
