Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment is a crucial component of public health. We aimed to determine the predictive value of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and TyG-related indices for new-onset CVD. METHODS This prospective study included 7,808 participants aged 40-69 years from the Ansung-Ansan cohort database. Our analysis was stratified by diabetes status. The hazard ratio (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) for incident CVD was computed using multiple Cox proportional-hazards regression models. To evaluate the predictive performance of these indices for new-onset CVD, we calculated the Harrell's C-index (95% CI). RESULTS In this study, a total of 6,890 participants did not have diabetes at baseline, while 918 participants had diabetes. In participants without diabetes, compared to the lowest tertile, fully adjusted HR and 95% CI for new-onset CVD in the highest tertile were as follows: TyG (HR 1.42, 95% CI 1.06-1.90), TyG-body mass index (BMI) (HR 1.92, 95% CI 1.19-3.10), TyG-waist circumference (WC) (HR 2.37, 95% CI 1.61-3.49), and TyG-waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (HR 2.20, 95% CI 1.47-3.28). However, no significant associations were observed between TyG, modified TyG indices, and new-onset CVD in participants with diabetes. Notably, the C-indice of TyG-WC and TyG-WHtR were significantly higher than those of TyG and TyG-BMI in participants without diabetes. CONCLUSIONS TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, and TyG-WHtR were associated with an increased risk of new-onset CVD in participants without diabetes. Furthermore, TyG-WC and TyG-WHtR showed better predictive performances for new-onset CVD than TyG and TyG-BMI in participants without diabetes.

Abstract
Background Pro-oxidant/antioxidant imbalances leading to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance can contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Oxidative Balance Score (OBS), a comprehensive measure of exposure to pro- and anti-oxidants, represents an individual's total oxidative balance. This study aimed to evaluate the association between OBS and MetS using two large datasets. Methods We analyzed data from 2,735 adults older than 19 years from the 2021 Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (KNHANES) and 5,807 adults aged 40-69 years from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). In each dataset, OBS was categorized into sex-specific tertiles (T). Results In KNHANES, the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for prevalent MetS in T3, compared to T1, were 0.44 (0.29-0.65) in men and 0.34 (0.23-0.50) in women after adjusting for confounders. In KoGES, the hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for incident MetS in T3, compared to T1, were 0.56 (0.48-0.65) in men and 0.63 (0.55-0.73) in women after adjusting for confounders. Conclusion OBS appears to be inversely related to MetS, which suggests that adopting lifestyle behaviors that decrease oxidative stress could be an important preventive strategy for MetS.

Abstract
Mitigating the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can be achieved through the maintenance of a healthy weight, the adoption of a healthy diet, and engaging in regular physical activity. The oxidative balance score (OBS), an integrated measure of pro- and antioxidant exposure conditions, represents an individual's overall oxidative balance status. This study aimed to evaluate the association between OBS and T2DM incidence using data from a large, community-based, prospective cohort study. Data from 7369 participants aged 40-69 years who engaged in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) were analyzed. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for T2DM incidence of sex-specific OBS tertile groups were calculated using univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analyses. During the mean 13.6-year follow-up period, 908 men and 880 women developed T2DM. The fully-adjusted HR (95% CI) for incident T2DM of the middle and highest tertile groups, compared with the referent lowest tertile group, were 0.86 (0.77-1.02) and 0.83 (0.70-0.99) in men and were 0.94 (0.80-1.11) and 0.78 (0.65-0.94) in women, respectively. Individuals with a high OBS are at lower risk for the development of T2DM. This implies that lifestyle modification with more antioxidant properties could be a preventive strategy for T2DM.

Abstract
Free-space optical (FSO) communication has been studied for next-generation network systems. Because an FSO system establishes point-to-point communication links, maintaining alignment among the transceivers is a critical challenge. In addition, atmospheric turbulence causes significant signal loss in FSO vertical links. Even in clear weather conditions, transmitted optical signals suffer significant scintillation losses due to random variations. Thus, the effect of atmospheric turbulence should be considered in vertical links. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between pointing error and scintillation from the aspect of beam divergence angle. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive beam that optimizes its divergence angle according to the pointing error between the communicating optical transceivers to mitigate the effect of scintillation due to pointing error. We performed a beam divergence angle optimization and compared it with adaptive beamwidth. The proposed technique was demonstrated using simulations, which revealed an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio and the mitigation of the scintillation effect. The proposed technique would be useful in minimizing the scintillation effect in vertical FSO links.

Abstract
Modern electronic devices, such as smartphones and electric vehicles, require multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), which comprise highly pure Cu terminations and Ni electrodes. Vapor-phase synthesis (VPS) is a promising method for synthesizing nanoparticles (NPs) with high purity and crystallinity. However, the agglomeration of the NPs occurs during their synthesis, which degrades the performance of the MLCC electrodes owing to several factors, including electrical shorts and low packing density. This paper proposes a coating-assisted VPS to inhibit agglomeration using potassium chloride (KCl) as the coating agent. The agglomeration ratio of the Cu NPs synthesized by in-flight coating with KCl at 950 °C significantly decreased from 48.20% to 3.80%, compared to without KCl coating. Furthermore, X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed that the KCl coating agent and residual copper chloride were removed by washing with ammonium hydroxide. Abstract
Nickel (Ni) nanoparticles (NPs) prepared through vapor-phase synthesis (VPS) are preferred for multilayer ceramic capacitor electrodes due to their high purity and crystallinity advantages. Agglomerated Ni NPs are usually generated using VPS but are undesirable because they cause various problems such as low packing density and electrical shorts. This study proposes the use of coating-assisted chemical vapor synthesis (CVS) for agglomerate inhibition using NaCl or KCl as a coating agent. We have found that the agglomeration ratio, 34.40%, for conventional CVS, can be reduced to 4.80% in the proposed method by in-flight coating with KCl at 900 °C by image analysis using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence analyses confirm that the NaCl and KCl coating agent can be removed by washing with distilled water. We believe that this coating process can be used to inhibit the formation of agglomerates during the CVS of Ni NPs.

Abstract
The Japanese sea lion, Zalophus japonicus, is an extinct pinniped species, which had inhabited along the coast of the Japanese archipelago and Korean peninsula. Its mitochondrial genome was determined by the assembly of PCR amplicons from the skeletal remains excavated from the Ulleungdo, South Korea. The whole mitogenome was 16,698 bp in length, which encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNA), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNA), an origin of light-strand replication (OL), and a control region (D-loop). Unusual start codons were identified in ND2 (ATA), ND3 (ATA), and ND5 (ATC), while COIII, ND3, and ND4 were terminated with an incomplete stop codon (T–/TA-). Phylogenetic analysis showed that Z. japonicus was a sister species to Z. californianus with 98.61% nucleotide sequence identity among 11 pinniped species in the infraorder Pinnipedia, which supported the previous results. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Z. japonicus would be valuable information for its restoration and the evolutional understandings of pinniped species in the Pacific Ocean.

Abstract
Low serum bilirubin levels have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and metabolic syndrome. Testosterone deficiency could also contribute to increased risk of CVD and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between serum bilirubin level and testosterone deficiency in 1284 Korean men aged 45 to 70 years. Serum bilirubin level was categorized into quartiles: Q1 ≤ 0.7, Q2 0.8–0.9, Q3 1.0–1.1, and Q4 ≥ 1.2 mg/dL. Testosterone deficiency was defined as level less than 8.0 nmol/L, as suggested by the position statement of International Society of Andrology. The overall prevalence of testosterone deficiency was 5.8% and significantly decreased with the quartiles from Q1 to Q4. Compared with the referent fourth quartile (serum bilirubin ≥ 1.2 mg/dL), the ORs (95% CIs) for testosterone deficiency was 2.29 (1.04–4.94) for the first quartile after adjusting for age, fasting glucose, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, leukocyte count, hemoglobin, smoking status, and alcohol intake. We found inversely graded associations of serum bilirubin level with testosterone deficiency. These findings suggest that low bilirubin level may be interpreted as a state of testosterone deficiency in middle-aged and older men.

Abstract
Background/Aims Although anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents have been widely used to treat ulcerative colitis (UC), the real-world incidence of suboptimal response to anti-TNF agents has not been thoroughly investigated, especially among Asians. Methods Using the Korean National Health Insurance database, we collected data on UC patients who initiated anti-TNF agents between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2017. We assessed suboptimal responses, including anti-TNF discontinuation or dose escalation, switching to other biologics, augmentation with a non-biologic therapy, and the requirement for colectomy. Results A total of 1,268 patients were included as new anti-TNF users (infliximab 713, adalimumab 433, golimumab 122). The proportion of patients who experienced at least one suboptimal response within 1 year among all patients was 63.5%, including 59.1%, 69.5%, and 68.0% of patients treated with infliximab, adalimumab, and golimumab, respectively. The cumulative incidences of at least one suboptimal response over time were 41.5%, 63.7%, 80.5%, and 87.1% at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively. Cox proportional hazards modeling revealed that adalimumab was associated with a higher risk of at least one suboptimal response (hazard ratio [HR], 1.29; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13 to 1.48), dose escalation (HR, 4.35; 95% CI, 2.97 to 6.38) and discontinuation (HR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.52) than infliximab. Golimumab was associated with a higher risk of switching to other biologics than infliximab (HR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.21 to 2.60). Conclusions More than half of Korean UC patients had suboptimal responses to anti-TNF agents within 1 year. UC patients treated with infliximab might be less prone to suboptimal responses than those treated with adalimumab or golimumab.

Abstract
Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), a well-known marker of hepatobiliary and bone disorders, has recently been discovered to be a biochemical marker of cardiometabolic diseases and chronic low-grade inflammation. We aimed to evaluate the association of serum ALP level with knee osteoarthritis in the general population. The study included 3060 men and women aged ≥50 years who participated in the 2009–2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The participants were categorized into three groups based on log-transformed serum ALP level as follows: T1 (1.74–2.32), T2 (2.33–2.43), and T3 (2.44–3.01). Their radiographs were evaluated by two well-trained radiologists using the Kellgren–Lawrence (KL) grading system. After excluding those with KL Grade 0, we categorized the remaining participants into two groups, a severe osteoarthritis group (KL Grade 4) and a non-severe osteoarthritis group (KL Grades 1 to 3). The odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of severe osteoarthritis according to the tertiles of log-transformed serum ALP levels of patients with osteoarthritis were calculated using a weighted multivariate logistic regression analysis. Compared with T1, the adjusted ORs (95% CIs) for severe osteoarthritis of the T3 serum ALP group was 1.613 (1.087–2.394; p = 0.018) after adjusting for the confounding variables. Conclusively, serum ALP activity was independently and positively associated with severe knee osteoarthritis in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
This study investigated the relationship of tinnitus with mental health and health-related quality of life (QoL) in older people. Data source included 5,129 community-dwelling men and women ≥60 years old from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Tinnitus was categorized into three groups: normal, tolerable tinnitus, and annoying tinnitus. Mental health and health-related QoL were assessed according to three dimensions (depressive mood, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation) and five domains (impaired mobility, impaired self-care, impaired usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression). The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of mental health and health-related QoL were calculated using multiple logistic regression analyses. Annoying tinnitus was positively and independently associated with deteriorated mental health and health-related QoL, suggesting comprehensive care is needed in older people with annoying tinnitus.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Periodontitis and osteoarthritis are major public health concerns that result in decreased quality of life among middle-aged and older adults. We sought to examine whether the severity of periodontitis is related to osteoarthritis according to the presence of type 2 diabetes. METHODS This study included 3,527 participants aged ≥50 years from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Periodontitis was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index; severe periodontitis was defined as periodontal tissue forming deep periodontal pockets ≥6 mm depth. Osteoarthritis was defined as Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≥2 on radiographic images of the knee or hip area with joint pain. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for osteoarthritis according to the severity of periodontitis, stratified by type 2 diabetes, were calculated using multiple logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Participants with type 2 diabetes were more likely to have osteoarthritis as the severity of periodontitis increased (nonsevere periodontitis: 1.23 [0.67-2.32]; severe periodontitis: 3.01 [1.51-5.84]) after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, education level, household income, hypertension, and frequent tooth-brushing. However, this positive association was not found in individuals without type 2 diabetes after adjusting for the same co-variables. CONCLUSIONS Severe periodontitis was positively and significantly associated with osteoarthritis in middle-aged and older individuals with type 2 diabetes. Our findings suggest that the oral inflammation manifesting in periodontitis may be at least partly involved in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis, particularly in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), a useful marker of hepatobiliary or bone disorder, has recently emerged as a biomarker of chronic low-grade inflammation and cardiometabolic disease. This study aimed to examine the association of serum ALP level with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in apparently healthy adults. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the relationship between serum ALP level and MetS in 7,101 men and 8,873 women aged 19 to 75 years using data from the 2008 to 2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MetS were calculated using multiple logistic regression analyses across serum ALP quartiles (Q1: ≤190 U/L; Q2: 191-224 U/L; Q3: 225-263 U/L; and Q4: ≥264 U/L for men and Q1: ≤163 U/L; Q2: 164-201 U/L; Q3: 202-251 U/L; and Q4: ≥252 U/L for women). RESULTS The mean values of most cardiometabolic variables, HOMA-IR, and leukocyte count gradually increased with serum ALP quartile. The prevalence of MetS significantly increased in accordance with serum ALP quartile. In comparison with those of individuals in the lowest quartile, the OR (95% CI) for MetS in the highest quartile was 1.32 (1.05-1.64) in men and 1.99 (1.42-3.81) in women after adjusting for age, cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, regular exercise, household income, education level, occupation, AST, ALT, and GGT levels. CONCLUSION Serum ALP level was positively and independently associated with MetS in men and women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although, previous studies have reported a positive association between hemoglobin levels and bone mineral density (BMD), the majority of the studies were limited in patients with chronic hypoxemic conditions and findings concerning the association among non-anemic populations are inconclusive. We aimed to examine the association between hemoglobin levels and BMD in non-anemic healthy adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 3626 non-anemic men and women aged ≥ 60 years who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The BMD of the lumbar spine and both femurs was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Participants with T-score for BMD < -1.0 SD were defined as having low BMD. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for low BMD were calculated using multiple logistic regression analyses across sex-specific hemoglobin quartiles. RESULTS The prevalence of low BMD gradually decreased in accordance with hemoglobin quartiles in both sexes. Compared with the group in the lowest quartile, the OR (95% CI) for low BMD in the lumbar spine was 0.78 (0.54-0.93) for men and 0.67 (0.50-0.93) for women after adjusting for age, BMI, tobacco smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, walking difficulty, household income, total calorie intake, calcium intake, iron intake, 25(OH)D, alkaline phosphatase, and parathyroid hormone levels. However, these positive associations were not found in femur after adjusting for the same co-variables. CONCLUSIONS Hemoglobin levels were inversely associated with low BMD in lumbar spine among non-anemic adults.

Abstract
Background
Skin antiseptic agents are used to prevent surgical-site infection (SSI); few trials have reported the superiority of any specific agent in clean-contaminated abdominal surgery. This RCT was designed to compare the effectiveness of chlorhexidine gluconate and povidone–iodine.
Methods
Consecutive patients who underwent clean-contaminated upper gastrointestinal or hepatobiliary–pancreatic open surgery between 2011 and 2014 were assigned randomly to either chlorhexidine gluconate or povidone–iodine. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of SSI within 30 days of surgery. Secondary endpoints included causative organisms and risk factors for SSI.
Results
A total of 534 patients were randomized; 31 (5·8 per cent) developed an SSI. There was no difference in the overall SSI rate in the chlorhexidine gluconate and povidone–iodine groups: 15 of 267 (5·6 per cent) and 16 of 267 (6·0 per cent) respectively (P = 0·853). The most common causative organism was Enterococcus faecalis. In subgroup analysis, biliary–pancreatic surgery had a higher SSI rate (26 of 127, 20·5 per cent) than upper gastrointestinal (2 of 204, 1·0 per cent) and hepatic (3 of 203, 1·5 per cent) resection. Both age (60 years and over) and type of incision were associated with the risk of SSI.
Conclusion
No difference was detected between chlorhexidine gluconate and povidone–iodine antiseptics for prevention of SSI. Registration number: NCT01495117 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov).

Abstract
Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in Asia. However, the trends in colorectal cancer incidence by subsite have not been analyzed across Asian countries. We used the most recent, high quality data from 6 cancer registries for two 5-year periods, 1998-2002 and 2003-2007, from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents to estimate colorectal cancer incidence by subsite in 5 Asian countries. Cases with overlapping lesions or otherwise unspecified colon cancer were re-distributed as proximal or distal colon cancer. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) per 100,000 population and incidence rate ratios from 1998 to 2002 to 2003-2007 were calculated for each subsite. For 2003-2007, men in Miyagi, Japan, had the highest ASR for cancer in the proximal colon, distal colon and rectum. Men of Jewish ancestry in Israel had a high ASR for proximal and distal colon cancer, but the lowest ASR for rectal cancer. The proportion of rectal cancer was highest among Korean men (51.39%) and lowest among Israeli women (26.6%). From 1998-2002 to 2003-2007, rectal cancer incidence did not significantly change in most registries, except for men in Miyagi, Japan, and both sexes in Korea. However, during the same period cancer incidence in the proximal and distal colon increased in most registries. In conclusion, there was substantial variation in subsite distributions of colorectal cancer in Asian registries and increases in overall incidence of colorectal cancer could be attributed to increases in colon cancer.

Abstract
In this investigation, two near infrared (NIR) interferometric techniques for silicon wafer metrology are described and verified with experimental results. Based on the transparent characteristic of NIR light to a silicon wafer, the fiber based spectrally resolved interferometry can measure the optical thickness of the wafer and stitching low coherence scanning interferometry can reconstruct entire surfaces of the wafer.

Abstract
Control of cell-matrix adhesion has become an important issue in the regulation of stem cell function. In this study, a maltose-binding protein (MBP)-linked basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2)-immobilised polystyrene surface (PS-MBP-FGF2) was applied as an artificial matrix to regulate integrin-mediated signalling. We sought to characterise human mesenchymal-stem cell (hMSC) behaviour in response to two different mechanisms of cell adhesion; (i) FGF2-heparan sulphate proteoglycan (HSPG)-mediated adhesion vs. (ii) fibronectin (FN)-integrin-mediated adhesion. Heparin inhibited hMSC adhesion to PS-MBP-FGF2 but not to FN-coated surface. The phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase, cytoskeletal re-organisation, and cell proliferation were restricted in hMSCs adhering to PS-MBP-FGF2 compared to FN-coated surface. Expression of MSC markers, such as CD105, CD90 and CD166, decreased in hMSCs expanded on PS-MBP-FGF2 compared to expression in cells expanded on FN-coated surface. hMSCs that were expanded on FN-coated surface differentiated into osteogenic and adipogenic cells more readily than those that were expanded on PS-MBP-FGF2. Furthermore, we characterised the N-linked glycan structures of hMSCs depending on the cell adhesion mechanism using mass spectrometry (MS)-based quantitative techniques. MS analysis revealed that 2,3-sialylated glycans, a potential marker of stem cell function, were more abundant on hMSCs expanded on FN-coated surface than on those expanded on PS-MBP-FGF2. Thus, the differentiation potential of hMSCs is controlled by the type of adhesion substrate that might provide an idea for the design of biomaterials to control stem cell fate. Elucidation of the glycan structure on the cell membrane may help characterise hMSC function.

Abstract
Abstract
There has been a significant global interest to produce bulk chemicals from renewable resources using engineered microorganisms. Large research programs have been launched by academia and industry towards this goal. Particularly, C4 chemicals such as succinic acid (SA) and 1,4-butanediol have been leading the path towards the commercialization of biobased technology with the effort of replacing chemical production. Here we present O-Succinyl-l-homoserine (SH) as a new, potentially important platform biochemical and demonstrate its central role as an intermediate in the production of SA, homoserine lactone (HSL), γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and its derivatives, and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). This technology encompasses (1) the genetic manipulation of Escherichia coli to produce SH with high productivity, (2) hydrolysis into SA and homoserine (HS) or homoserine lactone hydrochloride, and (3) chemical conversion of either HS or homoserine lactone HCL (HSL·HCl) into drop-in chemicals in polymer industry. This production strategy with environmental benefits is discussed in the perspective of targeting of fermented product and a process direction compared to petroleum-based chemical conversion, which may reduce the overall manufacturing cost.

Abstract
Intercalation of magnetic iron atoms through graphene formed on the SiC(0001) surface is found to induce significant changes in the electronic properties of graphene due mainly to the Fe-induced asymmetries in charge as well as spin distribution. From our synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy data together with ab initio calculations, we observe that the Fe-induced charge asymmetry results in the formation of a quasi-free-standing bilayer graphene while the spin asymmetry drives multiple spin-split bands. We find that Fe adatoms are best intercalated upon annealing at 600 °C, exhibiting split linear π-bands, characteristic of a bilayer graphene, but much diffused. Subsequent changes in the C 1s, Si 2p, and Fe 3p core levels are consistently described in terms of Fe-intercalation. Our calculations together with a spin-dependent tight binding model ascribe the diffuse nature of the π-bands to the multiple spin-split bands originated from the spin-injected carbon atoms residing only in the lower graphene layer.

Abstract
A seven-month-old, entire, male miniature schnauzer dog was referred with acute vomiting, inappetence and depression primarily as a result of a gastric foreign body (pine cones). During investigations, thoracic radiographs revealed increased volume of the right lung lobes, deviated cardiomediastinal structures and elevation of the heart from the sternum. Thoracic computed tomography revealed left cranial lung lobe hypoplasia and extension of the right cranial lung parenchyma across the midline to the left hemithorax. Branches of the right pulmonary vessels and bronchi also crossed the midline and extended to the left caudal lung lobe. These findings suggested that the right and left lungs were fused. In humans this finding is consistent with horseshoe lung, which is an uncommon congenital malformation. To the authors' knowledge, this case represents the first report of such a pulmonary anomaly in a dog.

Abstract
[Purpose] This study verified the changes in muscle activities and grasping power during maximal isometric exercise of the forearm and masseter muscle with and without a mandibular orthopedic repositioning appliance (MORA). It also offers basic data for defining the correlation of function of hand with mouth. [Methods] EMG was used to measure masticatory muscle, flexor bundle and extensor bundle activities with or without MORA while subjects performed the hook grip and pinch grip. The measuring tool used for measuring grip strength was the same as that used for measuring pinch and hook strength. The subjects were 28 healthy young adults. [Result] Muscle activity and grasping power significantly increased when wearing the MORA. [Conclusion] The result indicates that wearing MORA can increase muscle activity and grasping power of forearm and masseter muscle. We think wearing MORA might help improve the function of the forearm because it activates the function of the masseter.

Abstract
Disturbances in blood flow to intervertebral discs (IVD) play an important role in IVD degeneration. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) are extremely important angiogenic factors for vasodilation and neovascularization. We investigated the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the VEGF and eNOS genes and genetic susceptibility to lumbar IVD degeneration in a young adult Korean population. Two hundred and forty-one participants (aged 18 to 30 years), with or without low back pain, were selected for the study. Magnetic resonance imaging was made of the lumbar spine in all participants. The patient group (N = 102) had low back pain clinically and lumbar IVD degeneration radiographically. The control group (N = 139) included subjects with and without low back pain; all were negative radiographically for lumbar IVD degeneration. Using PCR-RFLP analysis, we analyzed VEGF (-2578C>A, -1154G>A, -634G>C, and 936C>T) and eNOS (-786T>C, 4a4b and 894G>T) SNPs. We made combined analyses of the genes and performed haplotype analyses. There were no significant differences in the genotype distribution of polymorphisms of VEGF and eNOS genes among patients and controls. However, the frequency of VEGF -2578CA +AA/-634CC combined genotypes was significantly higher in patients when compared with controls [odds ratio (OR) = 21.00; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.590- 170.240]. The frequencies of the -2578A/-1154A/-634C/936C (OR = 3.831; 95%CI = 1.068-13.742), -2578A/-1154A/-634C (OR = 3.356; 95%CI = 1.198-9.400), and -2578A/-634C/936C (OR = 10.820; 95%CI = 2.811-41.656) haplotypes were also significantly higher in patients than in controls. We conclude that the combined genotype VEGF -2578CA+AA/-634CC is a possible risk factor for IVD degeneration and the VEGF -2578A/-1154A/-634C/936C haplotype may increase the risk for development of IVD degeneration. Furthermore, the VEGF -634C allele appears to be associated with susceptibility to IVD degeneration.

Abstract
Insulin stimulates glucose uptake through the membrane translocation of GLUT4 and GLUT1. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) enhances insulin sensitivity. Here, we demonstrate that insulin stimulates GLUT4 and GLUT1 translocation, and glucose uptake, by activating the signaling pathway involving nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP), a calcium mobilizer, in adipocytes. We also demonstrate that PPARγ mediates insulin sensitization by enhancing NAADP production through upregulation of CD38, the only enzyme identified for NAADP synthesis. Insulin produced NAADP by both CD38-dependent and -independent pathways, whereas PPARγ produced NAADP by CD38-dependent pathway. Blocking the NAADP signaling pathway abrogated both insulin-stimulated and PPARγ-induced GLUT4 and GLUT1 translocation, thereby inhibiting glucose uptake. CD38 knockout partially inhibited insulin-stimulated glucose uptake. However, CD38 knockout completely blocked PPARγ-induced glucose uptake in adipocytes and PPARγ-mediated amelioration of glucose tolerance in diabetic mice. These results demonstrated that the NAADP signaling pathway is a critical molecular target for PPARγ-mediated insulin sensitization.

Abstract
We report on poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) containing biomimetic hydroxyapatite (HA) and hydroxyapatite-silver (HA-Ag) composite nanofibers prepared via an electrospinning process for the biomedical applications. The morphology, structure and thermal properties of the PCL, PCL/HA and PCL/HA-Ag composite nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetry (TGA). SEM images revealed that the nanofibers were well-oriented and incorporated the HA-Ag nanoparticles well. The adhesion, viability and proliferation properties of composite nanofibers and differentiation of osteoblast were carried out to study the in vitro cell compatibility of the PCL/HA/HA-Ag composite nanofibers. Our results showed that pristine PCL and PCL/HA composite nanofibers scaffold can be utilized for the bone regeneration applications, however, PCL/HA-Ag composite nanofibers results in mild cytotoxic effect to human cells.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Panax ginseng (P. ginseng) is one of the most widely used medicinal plants due to its wide spectrum of medicinal effects. Among the currently available Panax ginseng products, Korea red ginseng (KRG) has been shown to exhibit a variety of antioxidative and hepatoprotective action. AIM OF THE STUDY Our aim was to investigate the effects of KRG and its primary ginsenosides (Rg3 and Rh2) on EtOH-induced injury to mouse hepatocytes (TIB-73). MATERIALS AND METHODS We investigated the effects of KRG and its primary ginsenoside on EtOH-induced injury to TIB-73 cells and evaluated MAPKs signals as a possible mechanism of action. Hepatocytic injury was evaluated by biochemical assays as cell viability, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), ROS and mitochondria membrane potential (MMP) level in TIB-73 cells. The levels of MAPK activation were analyzed by Western blots. RESULTS The results showed that exposure of EtOH to TIB-73 cells led to cell death and membrane damage, accompanied by a decrease in cell viability, MMP, and Mg(2+) concentrations, but an increase in LDH, AST, ROS and MAPK activation. KRG and its primary ginsenosides reduced EtOH-induced generation of ROS and the activation of ERK and JNK, and increased Mg(2+) concentrations. CONCLUSION These results suggest that KRG and its primary ginsenosides inhibit EtOH-induced oxidative injury by suppression of the MAPK pathway in TIB-73 cells.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HA) containing gold (Au) nanoparticles was synthesized for the biomedical applications. The morphology, structure and thermal properties of the HA containing Au nanoparticles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetry (TGA). XRD patterns clearly revealed the formation of HA-Au composite nanoparticles. TEM observation showed that the Au nanoparticles had an average size of 5 nm and were incorporated into HA powder very well. Bactericidal activity of HA-Au with Au nanoparticles immobilized in HA was investigated. The adhesion, viability and proliferation properties of HA containing Au nanoparticles and the differentiation of osteoblast were studied for in vitro cell compatibility of the HA containing Au nanoparticles. Our results showed that HA containing Au nanoparticles were cytotoxic to the human osteoblastic cells.

The morphological, structural characterizations and thermal properties of the polyurethane/CaCl2 nanofibers were determined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetry (TGA). SEM images revealed that these composite nanofibers were well-oriented and had good incorporation of CaCl2. The morphological feature of the cells attached on polyurethane/CaCl2 nanofibers scaffold was confirmed by SEM. The in vitro cell compatibility of the polyurethane/CaCl2 composite nanofibers was studied. This study demonstrated the non-toxic effect of electrospun polyurethane/CaCl2 composite nanofibers. Based on this, we propose a mechanism for the cell attachment.

Abstract
Pregnenolone sulfate (PS) acts as an excitatory neuromodulator and has a variety of neuropharmacological actions, such as memory enhancement and convulsant effects. In the present study, we investigated the effect of PS on glutamatergic spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs) in acutely isolated dentate gyrus (DG) hilar neurons by use of a conventional whole-cell patch-clamp technique. PS significantly increased sEPSC frequency in a concentration-dependent manner without affecting the current amplitude, suggesting that PS acts presynaptically to increase the probability of spontaneous glutamate release. However, known molecular targets of PS, such as α7 nicotinic ACh, NMDA, σ1 receptors and voltage-dependent Ca(2+) channels, were not responsible for the PS-induced increase in sEPSC frequency. In contrast, the PS-induced increase in sEPSC frequency was completely occluded in a Ca(2+)-free external solution, and was significantly reduced by either the depletion of presynaptic Ca(2+) stores or the blockade of ryanodine receptors, suggesting that PS elicits Ca(2+)-induced Ca(2+) release (CICR) within glutamatergic nerve terminals. In addition, the PS-induced increase in sEPSC frequency was completely occluded by transient receptor potential (TRP) channel blockers. These data suggest that PS increases spontaneous glutamate release onto acutely isolated hilar neurons via presynaptic CICR, which was triggered by the influx of Ca(2+) through presynaptic TRP channels. The PS-induced modulation of excitatory transmission onto hilar neurons could have a broad impact on the excitability of hilar neurons and affect the pathophysiological functions mediated by the hippocampus.

Abstract
The immunosuppressive compound FK506 has been successfully used in kidney and liver transplant recipients. However, the compound can induce significant side effects on kidney function. Taurine is a potent free radical scavenger that attenuates a variety of renal diseases that are the consequence of excessive oxygen free radical damage. The purpose of this study was to investigate FK506-mediated death of Madin Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, in relation to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. We determined the calcium (Ca(2+)) and magnesium (Mg(2+)) concentration in cultured MDCK cells by microfluorescence techniques and the level of activation of c-Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK), extracellular signal regulated kinases (ERK), Bcl-2 and Bax proteins by Western blot. Treatment with 10 muM FK506 induced apoptosis in MDCK cells by increasing the level of intracellular ROS and Ca(2+) and by decreaseing the level of intracellular Mg(2+). This increase in intracellular ROS promoted JNK and Bax activation, which increased FK506-induced MDCK cell death. Taurine reduced the FK506-induced generation of ROS and activation of JNK and Bax. The results indicate that taurine can prevent FK506-induced kidney toxicity.

Abstract
The serine protease HtrA2 is important in regulating not only apoptosis but also cellular homeostasis. Recently, several lines of evidence suggest that HtrA2 may be intimately associated with Parkin; however, little is known about the functional relationships between HtrA2 and Parkin. Here we have shown that HtrA2 is co-localized with Parkin in the cytosol through the release of HtrA2 from the mitochondria upon cellular stresses. Moreover, endogenous levels of Parkin were significantly decreased in wild-type (HtrA2(+/+)) mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) compared with those in HtrA2-knockout (HtrA2(-/-)) MEF under the same stress conditions. Using cleavage and binding assays, we have demonstrated that HtrA2 specifically binds to and directly cleaves the E3 ubiquitin (Ub) ligase Parkin. Interestingly, the HtrA2-mediated Parkin cleavage irreversibly disrupts Parkin-mediated synphilin-1 ubiquitination and autoubiquitination, indicating that HtrA2 may play a critical role in the Parkin-related pathway involved in the ubiquitin proteasome system.

Abstract
Electrokinetic flows through hydrophobic microchannels experience velocity slip at the microchannel wall, which affects volumetric flow rate and solute retention time. The usual method of predicting the volumetric flow rate and velocity profile for hydrophobic microchannels is to solve the Navier-Stokes equation and the Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the electric potential with the boundary condition of velocity slip expressed by the Navier slip coefficient, which is computationally demanding and defies analytic solutions. In the present investigation, we have devised a simple method of predicting the velocity profiles and volumetric flow rates of electrokinetic flows by extending the concept of the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski velocity to microchannels with Navier slip. The extended Helmholtz-Smoluchowski velocity is simple to use and yields accurate results as compared to the exact solutions. Employing the extended Helmholtz-Smoluchowski velocity, the analytical expressions for volumetric flow rate and velocity profile for electrokinetic flows through rectangular microchannels with Navier slip have been obtained at high values of zeta potential. The range of validity of the extended Helmholtz-Smoluchowski velocity is also investigated.

Abstract
In the various biomedical microfluidic devices the target biomolecules are delivered by activating electroosmotic flows. The zeta potential of a microchannel wall, which determines the strength of the electroosmotic flow, is apt to change due to the adhesion of biomolecules such as DNA or protein especially around the microchannel turns. The resulting transient inhomogeneous profile of zeta potential alters flow pattern, volumetric flow rate and the band broading of solutes. In the present work, we have developed a method for the recursive estimation of transient inhomogeneous zeta potential in microchannel turns using velocity measurements. For the real time implementation of the present method, a compact and accurate reduced-order model is derived using the Karhunen-Loève Galerkin method and the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski slip velocity. The present scheme of recursive estimation is an important prerequisite to the real time control of microfluidic devices.

Abstract
When pT-LYCm4 containing lycopene synthetic genes was co-transformed with pSUcrtY or pSHcrtY containing crtY gene of Pantoea ananatis (P. ananatis) or Pantoea agglomerans (P. agglomerans), beta-carotene productions of 36 and 35 mg/L were obtained, respectively. No lycopene was detected in the beta-carotene production culture. pT-HB, constructed by addition of P. ananatis crtY gene into pT-LYCm4, was used for co-transformation with pSdxs and pSSN12Didi, which increased isopentenyl diphosphate and dimethylallyl diphosphate synthesis. beta-Carotene production significantly increased 1.5-fold (51 mg/L) with the amplification of the dxs gene through pSdxs and 4-fold (135 mg/L) with the mevalonate bottom pathway of pSSN12Didi in the presence of 3.3 mM mevalonate. The pT-DHB, constructed by integrating the dxs gene into pT-HB, was used for cotransformation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) harboring pSSN12Didi, resulting in beta-carotene production of 141 mg/L. Recombinant E. coli harboring pT-DHB and pSSN12Didi was used to maximize beta-carotene production by adjusting the available amounts of glycerol, a carbon source, and mevalonate, the precursor of the mevalonate bottom pathway. When recombinant E. coli was given 16.5 mM mevalonate and 2.5% (w/v) glycerol, beta-carotene production of 503 mg/L in concentration and 49.3 mg/g DCW in content was obtained at 144 h, which was the highest level of carotenoid production in E. coli ever reported in the literature.

Abstract
Many lab-on-a-chip based microsystems process biofluids such as blood and DNA solutions. These fluids are viscoelastic and show extraordinary flow behaviors, not existing in Newtonian fluids. Adopting appropriate constitutive equations these exotic flow behaviors can be modeled and predicted reasonably using various numerical methods. In the present paper, we investigate viscoelastic electroosmotic flows through a rectangular straight microchannel with and without pressure gradient. It is shown that the volumetric flow rates of viscoelastic fluids are significantly different from those of Newtonian fluids under the same external electric field and pressure gradient. Moreover, when pressure gradient is imposed on the microchannel there appear appreciable secondary flows in the viscoelastic fluids, which is never possible for Newtonian laminar flows through straight microchannels. The retarded or enhanced volumetric flow rates and secondary flows affect dispersion of solutes in the microchannel nontrivially.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) polymorphism may play a role in stroke and silent brain infarction (SBI) susceptibility, but the results among the populations studied to date have not been consistent. Thus, we investigated the association between ACE genotypes and ischemic stroke and SBI in Korean patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS DNA samples from 237 stroke patients, 264 SBI patients and 234 age-matched controls were amplified using polymerase chain reaction to detect the ACE ins/del (I/D) polymorphism. Genotype was determined by the presence of a 490-bp band (I allele) or a 190-bp band (D allele) in agarose gel electrophoresis. RESULTS Odds ratios of the I/D and D/D genotypes and the overall (I/D + D/D) for the I/I genotype were significantly different between stroke patients and normal controls. However, there was no significant difference between patients with SBI and controls. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first report of a significant association between ACE polymorphism and ischemic stroke in the Asian population. Although no consistent associations have been found between ACE polymorphism and stroke in the populations studied to date, the ACE polymorphism may be a genetic determinant of ischemic stroke, at least in Korean patients.
