Observation of D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}a_{0}(980)^{+} in the Amplitude Analysis of D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}π^{+}η

We perform for the first time an amplitude analysis of the decay D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}π^{+}η and report the observation of the decay D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}a_{0}(980)^{+} using 2.93  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. As the only W-annihilation-free decay among D to a_{0}(980) pseudoscalar, D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}a_{0}(980)^{+} is the ideal decay in extracting the contributions of the W-emission amplitudes involving a_{0}(980) and to study the final-state interactions. The absolute branching fraction of D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}π^{+}η is measured to be (1.27±0.04_{stat}±0.03_{syst})%. The branching fractions of intermediate processes D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}a_{0}(980)^{+} with a_{0}(980)^{+}→π^{+}η and D^{+}→π^{+}K[over ¯]_{0}^{*}(1430)^{0} with K[over ¯]_{0}^{*}(1430)^{0}→K_{S}^{0}η are measured to be (1.33±0.05_{stat}±0.04_{syst})% and (0.14±0.03_{stat}±0.01_{syst})%, respectively.

Observation of Significant Flavor-SU(3) Breaking in the Kaon Wave Function at 12<Q^{2}<25 GeV^{2} and Discovery of the Charmless Decay ψ(3770)→K_{S}^{0}K_{L}^{0}

We present cross sections for the reaction e^{+}e^{-}→K_{S}^{0}K_{L}^{0} at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.51 to 4.95 GeV using data samples collected in the BESIII experiment, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 26.5  fb^{-1}. Maternal arterial stiffness in hypertensive pregnancies with and without small-for-gestational-age neonate

OBJECTIVE

Pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia with a small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonate have poorer maternal hemodynamic function compared to those with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and an appropriately grown neonate. Arterial stiffness is a recognized prognostic marker of cardiovascular disease in the general population. The aim of this study was to compare maternal arterial stiffness between hypertensive pregnancies with, and those without, a SGA neonate and normotensive control pregnancies.

METHODS

This was a prospective cohort study of pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia or gestational hypertension and healthy normotensive control pregnancies, presenting to a tertiary referral hospital between January 2012 and May 2018. Maternal arterial stiffness was assessed by aortic pulse-wave velocity (PWV) and aortic augmentation index (AIx), which were recorded using a non-invasive device (Arteriograph®). Maternal and hemodynamic factors were adjusted for using linear regression analysis. Pregnancies with HDP were divided into those that delivered a SGA (birth weight < 10^th percentile) neonate (HDP + SGA group) and those that delivered an appropriately grown neonate (HDP-only group). Comparisons between groups were carried out using the Mann-Whitney U-test for continuous variables and the chi-square (or Fisher's exact) test for categorical variables.

RESULTS

Included in the analysis were 69 patients with HDP who delivered a SGA neonate, 129 with HDP who delivered a normally grown neonate and 220 healthy controls. Maternal age, weight, height and heart rate were associated significantly with brachial and aortic AIx. Maternal weight, height, mean arterial pressure, heart rate and gestational age were significant predictors of aortic PWV. Adjusted aortic AIx was significantly higher in both the HDP + SGA and HDP-only groups, compared with in controls (12.5% and 10.0% vs 7.6%; both P < 0.01), and was significantly different between the two HDP groups (P = 0.002). Adjusted PWV was significantly higher in the HDP-only group compared with in controls and the HDP + SGA group (7.7 m/s vs 7.1 m/s and 7.1 m/s; both P < 0.001). Conversely, unadjusted PWV was not significantly different between the two HDP groups (P = 0.414).

CONCLUSIONS

Pregnancies complicated by HDP with, and those without, a SGA neonate have significantly higher aortic AIx compared with uncomplicated normotensive pregnancies. Aortic AIx was highest in those pregnancies complicated by HDP with a SGA neonate, reflecting a progression in severity of arterial stiffness abnormality with a worsening clinical picture. These findings most likely reflect systemic reduced vascular compliance and increased systemic vascular resistance in pregnancy complicated by HDP. Copyright © 2019 ISUOG. Maternal haemodynamic function differs in pre-eclampsia when it is associated with a small-for-gestational-age newborn: a prospective cohort study

OBJECTIVE

To describe maternal haemodynamic differences in gestational hypertension with small-for-gestational-age babies (HDP + SGA), gestational hypertension with appropriate-for-gestational-age babies (HDP-only) and control pregnancies.

DESIGN

Prospective cohort study.

SETTING

Tertiary Hospital, UK.

POPULATION

Women with gestational hypertension and healthy pregnant women.

METHODS

Maternal haemodynamic indices were measured using a non-invasive Ultrasound Cardiac Output Monitor (USCOM-1A^® ) and corrected for gestational age and maternal characteristics using device-specific reference ranges.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Maternal cardiac output, stroke volume, systemic vascular resistance.

RESULTS

We included 114 HDP + SGA, 202 HDP-only and 401 control pregnancies at 26-41 weeks of gestation. There was no significant difference in the mean arterial blood pressure (110 versus 107 mmHg, P = 0.445) between the two HDP groups at presentation. Pregnancies complicated by HDP + SGA had significantly lower median heart rate (76 versus 85 bpm versus 83 bpm), lower cardiac output (0.85 versus 0.98 versus 0.97 MoM) and higher systemic vascular resistance (1.4 versus 1.0 versus 1.2 MoM) compared with control and HDP-only pregnancies, respectively (all P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Women with HDP + SGA present with more severe haemodynamic dysfunction than HDP-only. Even HDP-only pregnancies exhibit impaired haemodynamic indices compared with normal pregnancies, supporting a role of the maternal cardiovascular system in gestational hypertension irrespective of fetal size. Central haemodynamic changes may play a role in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia and should be considered alongside placental aetiology.

Augmenting Global Coherence in EEG Signals with Binaural or Monaural Noises

Internal stochastic resonance (internal SR) is a phenomenon of non-linear systems in which the addition of a non-zero level of noise produces an enhancement in the coherence between two or more signals. In a previous study, we found that the simultaneous administration of multisensory visual and auditory noise augments global coherence in electroencephalographic (EEG) signals via this phenomenon. Here, we examined whether such global coherence can also be augmented with at least one noisy acoustic source. We performed experiments on healthy subjects and applied the following binaural and monaural noise-stimulation protocols. First, we administered to the left ear Gaussian noise of fixed intensity, while we delivered to the right ear a second Gaussian noise of variable intensity levels (binaural protocol). Second, we applied the Gaussian noise of the same variable intensity levels but only to one ear (monaural protocol). We performed a permutation test analysis, finding that during both noise protocols there was a significant enhancement in the global coherence in EEG signals via the occurrence of internal SR within central pathways of the auditory system.

169 Comparison of pregnancy outcomes in dairy heifers artificially inseminated with sexed semen deposited in the uterine horns versus the uterine body

The use of sexed semen (SS) for AI of cattle has resulted in lower pregnancy per timed AI (P/TAI) compared with conventional semen. This has been attributed to lower sperm dose and cell damage during the cell sorting-freezing process. Horn AI is a common practice in equines and canines to improve pregnancy rate when using low sperm doses. The objective was to compare P/TAI and pregnancy loss (PL) in dairy heifers inseminated with SS deposited in the uterine horn (UH) ipsilateral to the ovary containing the preovulatory follicle (POF) versus TAI in the uterine body (UB). This study was performed on two dairy farms in Georgia (A and B). On farm A, 74 Holstein heifers (12 months old) received a 5-day Cosynch + controlled internal drug release (CIDR) protocol including an intravaginal insert (Eazi-Breed CIDR, Zoetis Animal Health) containing 1.38g of progesterone for 5 days and a dose of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) intramuscularly (100µg, 2mL of Factrel, Zoetis Animal Health). At CIDR removal, heifers received a dose of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) intramuscularly (25mg, 5mL of Lutalyse, Zoetis Animal Health) and again 24h later; 72h after CIDR removal, heifers received 100µg of GnRH intramuscularly and TAI with frozen-thawed SS. On farm B, 237 Holstein×Jersey heifers (12 months old) received a modified 5-day Cosynch + CIDR. This protocol was similar to that on farm A but did not include GnRH at the time of CIDR insertion or a second dose of PGF2α 24h after CIDR removal. Immediately before TAI, heifers were examined using transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) to determine on which ovary the POF was present. Each heifer was randomly assigned to TAI using SS in either the UH ipsilateral to the ovary containing the POF (n=150; farm A, n=32; farm B, n=118) or the UB regardless of where the POF was identified (n=161; farm A, n=42; farm B, n=119). Pregnancy was diagnosed 32 days after TAI using TRUS to determine P/TAI. Heifers diagnosed pregnant were re-examined using TRUS at 60 days of gestation to assess PL. Data were analysed using PROC LOGISTIC and the chi-square test of SAS (SAS Institute Inc.). Heifers that received SS in the UH had adequate P/TAI (50.6% (76/150); farm A: 50.0% (16/32); farm B: 50.8% (60/118)), which tended to be numerically greater (P=0.12) than that observed in heifers receiving SS in the UB (43.4% (70/161); farm A: 40.5% (17/42); farm B: 44.5% (53/119)). In addition, PL was not different between groups and was within normal ranges for dairy heifers (10.0 and 9.4% for UH and UB, respectively). In conclusion, TAI of dairy heifers with SS deposited in the UH ipsilateral to the ovary containing the POF resulted in adequate P/TAI, which was 7.2% greater than TAI in the UB. Horn AI with SS might become a valuable tool for optimising reproductive efficiency and genetic selection of dairy herds.

Influence of maternal characteristics and gestational age on hemodynamic indices: NICOM device-specific reference ranges

OBJECTIVES

To construct reference ranges for stroke volume, cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance (SVR) in normal pregnancy for the NICOM® device, and to explore associations between maternal characteristics and these hemodynamic variables.

METHODS

This was a prospective cohort study of healthy singleton pregnancies between 10 and 40 weeks' gestation attending a tertiary referral hospital between September 2012 and May 2018. Measurements of stroke volume, cardiac output and SVR were obtained throughout pregnancy using NICOM, a non-invasive device based on bioreactance technology. NICOM device-specific reference ranges were created with respect to gestational age and maternal characteristics. Once the distribution of the data had been determined with respect to the gestational age, patient characteristics were added to the model to test whether they provided a significant improvement in prediction of the median value. The effect was assessed of maternal weight, height, smoking status, conception using assisted reproductive technology, nulliparity and ethnicity.

RESULTS

We included 411 women in this study. The relationships between cardiac variables and gestational age observed in the NICOM-specific reference ranges are consistent with previous findings, with increasing cardiac output values until around 35 weeks and a decrease thereafter until term, and decreasing SVR until around 36 weeks, followed by an increase towards 40 weeks. Stroke volume showed a small linear increase across gestation with lower variability in observations close to term. Maternal weight, height and age were associated with cardiac output (all P < 0.05) and SVR (all P < 0.01), whilst maternal weight and height were associated with stroke volume (both P < 0.001). Ethnicity was significantly associated with stroke volume (P = 0.001) but not with cardiac output or SVR.

CONCLUSIONS

This study presents device-specific reference ranges for stroke volume, cardiac output and SVR for the NICOM device in healthy pregnancy and describes the maternal characteristics that are associated with the values of these hemodynamic measurements. Studies using NICOM in pregnancy can use these ranges in order to evaluate observations relative to those expected in uncomplicated pregnancy conditional on maternal characteristics. Increased Diameters of the Internal Cerebral Veins and the Basal Veins of Rosenthal Are Associated with White Matter Hyperintensity Volume

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

White matter hyperintensities on T2-weighted MR imaging are typical in older adults and have been linked to several poor health outcomes, including cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease. The presence and severity of white matter hyperintensities have traditionally been attributed to occlusive arteriopathy, but recent evidence also implicates deep medullary venule collagenosis and associated vasogenic edema. Historically, postmortem analyses have been the sole way to analyze cerebral veins, but SWI can be now used to examine cortical veins in vivo. The aim of the current study was to determine whether there is an association between the diameters of the large draining cerebral veins/sinuses and white matter hyperintensity volume.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

T2-weighted FLAIR and SWI were performed in 682 older adults without dementia (mean age, 73.9 ± 5.9 years; 59.1% women). Total and regional white matter hyperintensity volume was derived. We measured the diameters of 5 regions of the cerebral venous draining system: internal cerebral veins, basal veins of Rosenthal, superior sagittal sinus, vein of Galen, and straight sinus terminus.

RESULTS

Increased diameter of the internal cerebral veins was associated with greater total white matter hyperintensity volume (β = 0.09, P = .02) and regionally in the parietal (β = 0.10, P = .006), frontal (β = 0.09, P = .02), and temporal (β = 0.09, P = .02) lobes. Increased diameter of the basal veins of Rosenthal was associated with greater total (β = 0.10, P = .01), frontal (β = 0.11, P = .003), and temporal (β = 0.09, P = .02) white matter hyperintensity volume.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that the caliber of the internal cerebral veins and of the basal veins of Rosenthal relates to regional white matter disease.

Cardiac output measurements during high-risk Cesarean section using electrical bioreactance or arterial waveform analysis: assessment of agreement

OBJECTIVE

Maternal hemodynamics change significantly during Cesarean section complicated by massive hemorrhage or severe hypertensive disease. Cardiac output (CO) monitoring aids early, goal-directed hemodynamic therapy. The aim of this study was to record hemodynamic changes observed during Cesarean section in pregnancies at high risk of hemodynamic instability, using invasive (LiDCOrapid™) and non-invasive (NICOM®) devices, and to assess agreement between the two devices in measuring CO.

METHODS

Simultaneous intraoperative hemodynamic measurements were taken using the LiDCOrapid and NICOM devices, following standardized techniques, in women at high risk of hemodynamic instability undergoing Cesarean section. Agreement in CO measurements between the two devices was assessed using Bland-Altman plots and the agreement:tolerability index (ATI). Agreement analyses were performed for repeated measures in subjects, using centiles.

RESULTS

From 10 women, 307 paired measurements were analyzed. Mean bias (defined as the mean difference in CO measurements between the LiDCOrapid and NICOM devices) was 3.05 (95% CI, 1.89 to 4.21) L/min. Limits of agreement ranged from -1.58 (95% CI, -4.47 to -0.14) to 7.68 (95% CI, 6.24 to 10.56) L/min. The resulting agreement interval was 9.26 L/min which returned an ATI of 2.3.

CONCLUSIONS

There are large mean differences between CO measurements obtained during Cesarean section using the LiDCOrapid and NICOM hemodynamic monitors in pregnant women at high risk of hemodynamic instability, indicating that they should not be considered interchangeable clinically. There is an unacceptably low level of agreement (ATI > 2) in CO measurements between the devices, conferring a high risk of clinical misclassification during massive hemorrhage. Impaired maternal hemodynamics in morbidly obese women: a case-control study

OBJECTIVE

Maternal obesity is associated with significant pregnancy complications and is a risk factor for the development of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy as well as other adverse outcomes. There are few data regarding the hemodynamic aberrations observed in maternal obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate maternal hemodynamics in morbidly obese women.

METHODS

This was a prospective, case-control study of morbidly obese women (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 40 kg/m² ) and controls (BMI 20-29.9 kg/m² ). The control population was matched for maternal age and gestational age. BMI was calculated based on maternal height and weight at the time of recruitment to the study, which occurred on the same day as the hemodynamic assessment. Pregnant women in the second or third trimester of pregnancy were included. Women who were found to be hypertensive at any time were excluded from the study. A USCOM-1A® device was used to assess hemodynamic parameters (heart rate, stroke volume (SV), cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance (SVR)). The parameters were corrected for body surface area (BSA) to provide the SV index (SVI), cardiac index (CI) and SVR index (SVRI). Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare the medians of the hemodynamic variables between the two groups.

RESULTS

In total, 23 morbidly obese women and 327 controls were included in the analysis. There was no difference in maternal (P = 0.506) or gestational (P = 0.693) age at recruitment between the groups. Mean arterial pressure was higher both at pregnancy booking (90 vs 80 mmHg, P < 0.001) and study recruitment (91 vs 85 mmHg, P < 0.001) in the obese group compared with the controls. Heart rate was higher in the obese group (P = 0.003), but there was no difference in SV (P = 0.271), cardiac output (P = 0.238) or SVR (P = 0.635). Following correction of these parameters for BSA, compared with the control group, SVI (34 vs 45 mL/m² , P < 0.001) and CI (2.96 vs 3.64 L/min/m² , P < 0.001) were significantly reduced in the obese group, whereas SVRI was significantly higher (2354 vs 1840 dynes × s/cm⁵ , P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The findings of our study suggest that cardiac function is significantly altered in morbidly obese pregnant women. In order to make appropriate comparisons between individuals, it is imperative that hemodynamic parameters are indexed for BSA, as is standard practice in pediatric cardiology. The novel finding of reduced CI in morbidly obese pregnant women may explain the predisposition to pre-eclampsia and other adverse outcomes in this population and warrants further investigation. Brain Perivascular Spaces as Biomarkers of Vascular Risk: Results from the Northern Manhattan Study

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Dilated perivascular spaces in the brain are associated with greater arterial pulsatility. We hypothesized that perivascular spaces identify individuals at higher risk for systemic and cerebral vascular events.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Stroke-free participants in the population-based Northern Manhattan Study had brain MR imaging performed and were followed for myocardial infarction, any stroke, and death. Imaging analyses distinguished perivascular spaces from lesions presumably ischemic. Perivascular spaces were further subdivided into lesions with diameters of ≤3 mm (small perivascular spaces) and >3 mm (large perivascular spaces). We calculated relative rates of events with Poisson models and hazard ratios with Cox proportional models.

RESULTS

The Northern Manhattan Study participants who had MR imaging data available for review (n = 1228; 59% women, 65% Hispanic; mean age, 71 ± 9 years) were followed for an average of 9 ± 2 years. Participants in the highest tertile of the small perivascular space score had a higher relative rate of all deaths (relative rate, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.01-1.91), vascular death (relative rate, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.12-3.14), myocardial infarction (relative rate, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.01-4.31), any stroke (relative rate, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.03-3.11), and any vascular event (relative rate, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.18-2.56). After we adjusted for confounders, there was a higher risk of vascular death (hazard ratio, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01-1.11), myocardial infarction (hazard ratio, 2.22; 95% CI, 1.12-4.42), and any vascular event (hazard ratio, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.01-1.08) with higher small perivascular space scores.

CONCLUSIONS

In this multiethnic, population-based study, participants with a high burden of small perivascular spaces had increased risk of vascular events. By gaining pathophysiologic insight into the mechanism of perivascular space dilation, we may be able to propose novel therapies to better prevent vascular disorders in the population.

Characterization of aerosols and fibers emitted from composite materials combustion

This work investigates the aerosols emitted during combustion of aircraft and naval structural composite materials (epoxy resin/carbon fibers and vinyl ester/glass fibers and carbon nanotubes). Combustion tests were performed at lab-scale using a modified cone calorimeter. The aerosols emitted have been characterized using various metrological devices devoted to the analysis of aerosols. The influence of the nature of polymer matrices, the incorporation of fibers and carbon nanotubes as well as glass reinforcements on the number concentration and the size distribution of airborne particles produced, was studied in the 5 nm-10 μm range. Incorporation of carbon fibers into epoxy resin significantly reduced the total particle number concentration. In addition, the interlaced orientation of carbon fibers limited the particles production compared to the composites with unidirectional one. The carbon nanotubes loading in vinyl ester resin composites influenced the total particles production during the flaming combustion with changes during kinetics emission. Predominant populations of airborne particles generated during combustion of all tested composites were characterized by a PN50 following by PN(100-500).

Naive and radiolabeled antibodies to E6 and E7 HPV-16 oncoproteins show pronounced antitumor activity in experimental cervical cancer

BACKGROUND

In spite of profound reduction in incidence, cervical cancer claims >275,000 lives annually. Previously we demonstrated efficacy and safety of radioimmunotherapy directed at HPV16 E6 oncoprotein in experimental cervical cancer.

MATERIALS & METHODS

We undertook a direct comparison of targeting E7 and E6 oncoproteins with specific (188)Rhenium-labeled monoclonal antibodies in CasKi subcutaneous xenografts of cervical cancer cells in mice.

RESULTS

The most significant tumor inhibition was seen in radioimmunotherapy-treated mice, followed by the unlabeled monoclonal antibodies to E6 and E7. No hematological toxicity was observed. Immunohistochemistry suggests that the effect of unlabeled antibodies is C3 complement mediated.

CONCLUSION

We have demonstrated for the first time that radioimmunotherapy directed toward E7 oncoprotein inhibits experimental tumors growth, decreases E7 expression and may offer a novel approach to cervical cancer therapy.

Magnetic field and atomic order effect on the martensitic transformation of a metamagnetic alloy

The martensitic transformation (MT) of metamagnetic shape memory alloys is very sensitive to the applied magnetic field and atomic order. We analyze the alloy Ni50Mn34.5In15.5 in magnetic fields up to 13 T. The alloy has been prepared both in an ordered state by slow cooling, and in a disordered state by rapid quenching. In both cases the dependence of the martensitic transition temperature on the field is highly nonlinear. Such departure from linearity is due to a decrease of the entropy change at the transition, ΔS, with the applied field. This can be explained by the ordering effect of the magnetic field on the frustrated magnetic structure of the alloy in the martensitic phase. Compliance with a recent model, relying on the strong magnetoelastic interactions in these compounds, is very satisfactory.

Perivascular spaces are associated with atherosclerosis: an insight from the Northern Manhattan Study

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Perivascular spaces are potential spaces found between brain blood vessels and surrounding leptomeninges that have been associated with cardiovascular risk factors and dementia, but less is known about their relationship to atherosclerosis. We tested the hypothesis that perivascular spaces are associated with atherosclerosis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Participants from the Northern Manhattan Study who remained stroke-free were invited to participate in an MR imaging substudy. Parenchymal hypointensities of <3 mm identified on brain axial T1-weighted MR imaging were scored as perivascular spaces. A semiquantitative score was created to express the degree of brain involvement. Generalized linear models were used to assess statistical associations with carotid plaque as a surrogate marker of atherosclerosis.

RESULTS

The studied sample included 706 participants (mean age, 72.6 ± 8.0 years; 60% women, 61% Hispanic, 68% with hypertension, 19% with diabetes, and 57% with high cholesterol). The perivascular spaces score ranged from 0 to 19 with 52% of the sample having a perivascular spaces score of ≤4. In unadjusted analysis, perivascular spaces were associated with age (β = 0.01 per year, P = < .001), non-Hispanic black race-ethnicity (β = 0.16, P = .02), hypertension (β = 0.24, P = < .001), and carotid plaque (β = 0.22, P < .001). In multivariable analysis, only age (β = 0.01, P = .02), hypertension (β = 0.17, P = .01), and carotid plaque (β = 0.22, P = < .001) remained independently associated with perivascular spaces.

CONCLUSIONS

Perivascular spaces were more frequently found in older participants, in those with hypertension, and in the presence of carotid plaque. These results suggest that mechanisms leading to atherosclerosis might also lead to an increased number of perivascular spaces. These results need confirmation in prospective studies.

A new magneto-elastic resonance based technique to determine magneto-mechanical parameters of amorphous ferromagnetic ribbons

Measurement of the magneto-mechanical parameters characteristics of amorphous ribbons often requires complex or limited methods due to their very small thickness. In this paper, it is shown how one can establish and estimate the characteristics of a magnetostrictive resonator from the experimental frequency response free of any kind of mechanical measurement (stress or elongation). This technique which is completely developed with a ribbon exhibiting good resonator properties, is suitable to estimate the magneto-mechanical coupling coefficient k33 and the Young's modulus and also to establish the magnetostriction curves λ(H) of amorphous ribbons. Results obtained from resonators made of 2605SC and 2826 from Metglas(TM) ribbons confirmed the validity of the present technique. However, measurements performed on a thin foil of nickel demonstrate that the present method cannot be extended to semi-soft magnetic materials. The technique which is proposed, has serious advantages upon others as it is non-destructive, low cost and easy to develop compared to common ones.

Distribution of Lesions in Fetal Brains Following Experimental Infection of Pregnant Sheep With Toxoplasma gondii

Six ovine fetal brains were harvested 33 to 35 days postchallenge from 5 ewes, each of which was given 3000 Toxoplasma gondii oocysts on day 90 of pregnancy. Histopathologic examination of transverse sections taken at 13 levels in the fetal brains revealed the presence of toxoplasmosis-related lesions in all 6 brains. However, lesions were not randomly distributed ( P = .007); they were most numerous at the level of the optic tract, the rostral margin of the pons, and 4 mm caudal to the ansate sulcus and were absent in all sections at the level of the caudal cerebellum. Lesion distribution may be due to hemodynamic factors, differences in the expression of endothelial surface receptor molecules at the level of the blood-brain barrier, or the presence of localized permissive/inhibitory factors within the brain. The results have implications for the selection of areas of brain from aborted ovine fetuses to be examined histopathologically for laboratory diagnosis.

Permeability estimates in histopathology-proved treatment-induced necrosis using perfusion CT: can these add to other perfusion parameters in differentiating from recurrent/progressive tumors?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Differentiating treatment effects from RPT is a common yet challenging task in a busy neuro-oncologic practice. PS probably represents a different aspect of angiogenesis and vasculature and can provide additional physiologic information about recurrent/progressive enhancing lesions. The purpose of the study was to use PS measured by using PCT to differentiate TIN from RPT in patients with previously irradiated brain tumor who presented with a recurrent/progressive enhancing lesion.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Seventy-two patients underwent PCT for assessment of a recurrent/progressive enhancing lesion from January 2006 to November 2009. Thirty-eight patients who underwent surgery and histopathologic diagnosis were included in this analysis. Perfusion parameters such as PS, CBV, CBF, and MTT were obtained from the enhancing lesion as well as from the NAWM.

RESULTS

Of 38 patients, 11 were diagnosed with pure TIN and 27 had RPT. Patients with TIN showed significantly lower mean PS values than those with RPT (1.8 ± 0.8 versus 3.6 ± 1.6 mL/100 g/min; P value=.001). The TIN group also showed lower rCBV (1.2 ± 0.3 versus 2.1 ± 0.7; P value<.001), lower rCBF (1.2 ± 0.5 versus 2.6 ± 1.7; P value=.004), and higher rMTT (1.4 ± 0.4 versus 1.0 ± 0.4; P value=.018) compared with the RPT group.

CONCLUSIONS

PCT and particularly PS can be used in patients with previously treated brain tumors to differentiate TIN from RPT. PS estimates can help increase the accuracy of PCT in differentiating these 2 entities.

New strategies and patent therapeutics in EBV-associated diseases

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a virus present all throughout the world that causes infectious mononucleosis (IM) and is highly associated with certain malignancies. This study is a review of current knowledge concerning the pathogenic mechanisms of EBV in tumor and auto-immune diseases and the different new strategies to treat EBV associated pathologies. Phenomena surrounding the proliferation and immortalization of B lymphocytes, the mechanisms of immune escape and the role of CD8+ and CD4+ T cells in the infection by EBV are explained. An analysis is made of the role of EBV proteins during the biological events that take place in primary infection, persistent chronic infection together with an update of the approaches of novel patented therapeutics. Currently there is no vaccine protecting against EBV-associated disorders and no treatment that may inhibit or eliminate their progression. Thus, it is crucial to obtain additional information on the function and importance of genes that play a role on the development of those diseases with which it is associated, as well as on the humoral and cellular immune processes involved in them.

In vivo correlation of tumor blood volume and permeability with histologic and molecular angiogenic markers in gliomas

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Tumor angiogenesis is very heterogeneous and in vivo correlation of perfusion imaging parameters with angiogenic markers can help in better understanding the role of perfusion imaging as an imaging biomarker. The purpose of this study was to correlate PCT parameters such as CBV and PS with histologic and molecular angiogenic markers in gliomas.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty-six image-guided biopsy specimens in 23 patients with treatment-naive gliomas underwent PCT examinations. We correlated MVD, MVCP, VEGFR-2 expression, tumor cellularity, and WHO grade of the image-guided biopsy specimens with the PCT parameters. Histologic sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, CD34, and VEGFR-2 and examined under a light microscope. These histologic and molecular angiogenic markers were correlated with perfusion parameters of the region of interest corresponding to the biopsy specimen. Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analyses by using clustering methods were performed to assess these correlations.

RESULTS

CBV showed a significant positive correlation with MVD (r = 0.596, P < .001), whereas PS showed a significant positive correlation with MVCP (r = 0.546, P = .001). Both CBV (r = 0.373, P = .031) and PS (r = 0.452, P = .039) also showed a significant correlation with WHO grade. VEGFR-2 positive specimens showed higher PS and CBV; however, neither was statistically significant at the .05 level.

CONCLUSIONS

CBV showed a significant positive correlation with MVD, whereas PS showed a significant positive correlation with MVCP, suggesting that these 2 perfusion parameters represent different aspects of tumor vessels; hence, in vivo evaluation of these could be important in a better understanding of tumor angiogenesis.

Pemoline and tetramisole 'positives' in english racehorses following levamisole administration

Pemoline is a central nervous system stimulant that has been used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy in humans; its identification in horses could be considered evidence of attempts to influence performance. Two recent pemoline 'positives' in English racehorses led us to review the chemical relationships between tetramisole, levamisole, aminorex and pemoline. Pemoline is a simple oxidation product of aminorex, which has been shown in the United States and elsewhere to be an equine metabolite of levamisole. Based on the clear structural relationships between aminorex and pemoline, we conclude that levamisole can metabolise to pemoline in horses and that pemoline identifications in horses post levamisole administration are likely to be associated with levamisole administration. Levamisole should not be administered to horses about to compete because of its ability to metabolise to two central nervous system stimulants, aminorex and pemoline.

Detection of new mutations conferring resistance to linezolid in glycopeptide-intermediate susceptibility Staphylococcus hominis subspecies hominis circulating in an intensive care unit

Glycopeptides and linezolid are the most widely used antibiotics to treat infections by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus spp. We report the presence of various isolates of methicillin-resistant S. hominis subsp. hominis with resistance to linezolid and reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides. We studied ten blood culture isolates of S. hominis subsp. hominis from nine patients admitted to our hospital. Etest was used to study susceptibility to antibiotics commonly prescribed against staphylococci. Domain V region of the 23S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced to detect possible mutations that confer resistance to linezolid. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used for the clonality study of isolates. All isolates were resistant to oxacillin, gentamicin, levofloxacin, cotrimoxazole, and linezolid, and susceptible to tigecycline and daptomycin. Nine of the isolates were resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin, and showed heterogeneous resistance to glycopeptides. C2190T, G2603T, and G2474T mutations were detected in domain V of the 23S rRNA gene. PFGE showed the presence of two different clones. This report alerts to the possible appearance of clinical strains of methicillin-resistant staphylococci with intermediate resistance to glycopeptides, resistance to linezolid, and multiple resistance to other second-line antibiotics.

The effect of thermal and vapor annealing treatments on the self-assembly of TiO2/PS-b-PMMA nanocomposites generated via the sol-gel process

Polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (SMMA) block copolymer has been used as a structure-directing agent for generating TiO2 /SMMA nanocomposites via the sol-gel process using a hydrophobic surfactant. The aim of the work has been focused on the preparation of well-defined nanostructured composites based on the self-assembling capability of the block copolymer using two different annealing methods: thermal- and solvent-induced microphase separation. The addition of different amounts of nanoparticles caused strong variations in the self-assembled morphology of the TiO2 /SMMA nanocomposites with respect to the block copolymer, as observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). To verify the confinement of the nanoparticles in the PMMA block 3D AFM images and corresponding AFM profiles have also been reported. UV light irradiation of the nanocomposite films provoked the removal of the organic matrix and consequently led to an array of TiO2 nanoparticles on the substrate surface.

Antimicrobial activity of plant essential oils using food model media: efficacy, synergistic potential and interactions with food components

The aim of this study was to optimise the antimicrobial efficacy of plant essential oils (EOs) for control of Listeria spp. and spoilage bacteria using food model media based on lettuce, meat and milk. The EOs evaluated were lemon balm, marjoram, oregano and thyme and their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined against Enterobacter spp., Listeria spp., Lactobacillus spp., and Pseudomonas spp. using the agar dilution method and/or the absorbance based microplate assay. MICs were significantly lower in lettuce and beef media than in TSB. Listeria strains were more sensitive than spoilage bacteria, and oregano and thyme were the most active EOs. EO combinations were investigated using the checkerboard method and Oregano combined with thyme had additive effects against spoilage organisms. Combining lemon balm with thyme yielded additive activity against Listeria strains. The effect of simple sugars and pH on antimicrobial efficacy of oregano and thyme was assessed in a beef extract and tomato serum model media. EOs retained greater efficacy at pH 5 and 2.32% sugar, but sugar concentrations above 5% did not negatively impact EO efficacy. In addition to proven antimicrobial efficacy, careful selection and investigation of EOs appropriate to the sensory profile of foods and composition of the food system is required. This work shows that EOs might be more effective against food-borne pathogens and spoilage bacteria when applied to foods containing a high protein level at acidic pH, as well as moderate levels of simple sugars.

Salinity and temperature effects on physiological responses of Vibrio fischeri from diverse ecological niches

Vibrio fischeri is a bioluminescent bacterial symbiont of sepiolid squids (Cephalopoda: Sepiolidae) and monocentrid fishes (Actinopterygii: Monocentridae). V. fischeri exhibit competitive dominance within the allopatrically distributed squid genus Euprymna, which have led to the evolution of V. fischeri host specialists. In contrast, the host genus Sepiola contains sympatric species that is thought to have given rise to V. fischeri that have evolved as host generalists. Given that these ecological lifestyles may have a direct effect upon the growth spectrum and survival limits in contrasting environments, optimal growth ranges were obtained for numerous V. fischeri isolates from both free-living and host environments. Upper and lower limits of growth were observed in sodium chloride concentrations ranging from 0.0% to 9.0%. Sepiola symbiotic isolates possessed the least variation in growth throughout the entire salinity gradient, whereas isolates from Euprymna were the least uniform at <2.0% NaCl. V. fischeri fish symbionts (CG101 and MJ101) and all free-living strains were the most dissimilar at >5.0% NaCl. Growth kinetics of symbiotic V. fischeri strains were also measured under a range of salinity and temperature combinations. Symbiotic V. fischeri ES114 and ET101 exhibited a synergistic effect for salinity and temperature, where significant differences in growth rates due to salinity existed only at low temperatures. Thus, abiotic factors such as temperature and salinity have differential effects between free-living and symbiotic strains of V. fischeri, which may alter colonization efficiency prior to infection.

Fetal abdominal cysts in the first trimester: prenatal detection and clinical significance

OBJECTIVE

In order to determine the clinical significance of fetal abdominal cysts detected in the first trimester, we reviewed our experience with such cases collected over a 5-year period.

METHODS

Five cases in which a fetal abdominal cyst was detected by ultrasound in the first trimester were identified. Information on the ultrasound findings, antenatal course and perinatal outcome was obtained in all cases.

RESULTS

The abdominal cyst was confirmed by an early second-trimester scan at 14-16 weeks in all cases, at which time no associated anomalies were detected. The standard detailed second-trimester scan at 18-22 weeks demonstrated complete resolution in three cases. These women had an uneventful antenatal course, and normal newborn infants were delivered at term. However, one of these infants had intestinal malrotation, chronic abdominal distension and midgut volvulus requiring surgery at the age of 7 months. Among the remaining two cases in which the abdominal cyst persisted, one required prenatal aspiration at 19 weeks owing to significant enlargement and resolved. The other remained stable in size and was managed conservatively, but the infant required surgery at the age of 7 weeks owing to a choledochal cyst causing intermittent episodes of acholia.

CONCLUSION

Abdominal cysts in early pregnancy often resolve spontaneously or remain small and are usually associated with a good outcome. Nevertheless, as they can also be associated with serious underlying gastrointestinal pathological conditions, close surveillance in the perinatal period is advocated.
