Developmental factors associated with inappropriate coping strategies among sexual aggressors of children

BACKGROUND

Many studies in the field of sexual offending focus on the presence of inadequate coping strategies prior to sexual offending, and the role these strategies play in the sequence of the offense. However, little is known about the development of strategies-such as substance abuse and, especially, deviant sexual fantasies-to manage daily difficulties.

OBJECTIVE

To better understand the antecedents of the development of inadequate coping strategies, we conducted a series of structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS

Based on 274 sexual aggressors of children, these analyses were based on components of Maniglio (2011a) theoretical model, in which victimization before the age of 18 leads to the development of psychological problems and, ultimately, the reliance on deviant sexual fantasies as a coping strategy.

METHODS

Two models were created through exploratory factorial analysis: the first model comprised 19 manifest variables, while the second model consisted of 15 manifest variables. All the retained variables were related to Maniglio's (2011a) hypothesis.

RESULTS

The analyses not only confirm Maniglio's hypothesis but also produced two statistically significant models (RMSEA = 0.069, CFI = 0.93 and TLI = 0.92 for Model 1 & RMSEA = 0.074, CFI = 0.93 and TLI = 0.91 for Model 2) composed of three indirect trajectories and one direct trajectory on the one hand, and four indirect trajectories and one direct trajectory on the other hand.

CONCLUSIONS

These results are consistent with those of studies that have highlighted the heterogeneity of sexual aggressors of children.

Inadequate Coping Strategies of Men who Have Committed Sexual Aggression Against Women: A Study of Their Developmental Antecedents

Several researchers have found that men who have committed sexual aggression have inadequate coping strategies (e.g., paraphilic sexual fantasies, substance abuse). However, very few researchers have empirically examined the factors potentially associated with the development of these strategies. In 2011, Maniglio hypothesized that the inadequate coping strategies of men who have committed sexual aggression are the result of childhood victimization, mediated by internalized psychological problems. The present study therefore empirically tested this hypothesis in a Canadian sample of 205 men who had committed sexual aggression against women, of whom 37 committed sexual murder. Structural equation modeling (SEM) resulted in the identification of several direct and indirect trajectories leading from childhood victimization (psychological, physical, sexual) to the development of inadequate coping strategies (paraphilic sexual fantasies, alcohol and drug use) mediated by internalized psychological problems (e.g., anxiety, depression, social isolation). The theoretical and clinical implications of these developmental trajectories are discussed.

Sexual Recidivism During Treatment: Impact on Therapists

There are few studies of therapists' reactions to working with individuals who have committed sexual offenses, and almost none on reactions following sexual recidivism by a patient who is currently in treatment. Consequently, the aim of the current study was to analyze the cognitive and emotional reactions, as well as the intervention strategies, of therapists who have learned of the sexual recidivism of a patient. A total of 59 participants from the province of Quebec (Canada) completed a questionnaire on their reactions to this event. Participants' responses to their patient's recidivism varied as a function of gender, experience, and the way they learned of the recidivism. The most common cognitions reported were thinking of the victim and thinking about the consequences of further judicialization for the patient and those close to them. The most common emotions reported were sadness for the victim and fear that the patient would reoffend again. The most common intervention strategies were being sensitive to the experience of the patient and asking the patient what drove them to offend. Support measures for therapists working with individuals who have committed sexual offenses during treatment are discussed.

Recidivism Rates of Treated, Non-Treated and Dropout Adolescent Who Have Sexually Offended: a Non-Randomized Study

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral treatment in reducing recidivism by adolescents who have sexually offended (ASO). A secondary objective was to determine whether typologies based on victim age (child, adult/peer, mixed) and relationship (intrafamilial, extra familial, intra/extra familial) discriminate ASO in terms of response to treatment and recidivism. The sample comprised 327 adolescents 12-18 years old (M = 15.8 years, SD = 1.9) who were evaluated in an outpatient clinic after committing a contact sexual assault. Official data on recidivism (criminal charges) was collected after a follow-up period of 21-162 months (M = 7.8 years, SD = 32.2). Survival analysis indicated that adolescents who completed treatment (n = 62) had a recidivism rate for violence (including sexual violence) almost half that of adolescents who had either not completed the treatment or not received treatment (n = 261), (16.1 vs. 30.7%). Neither of the two typologies studied had any effect on the completion of treatment. However, sexual aggression against adults/peers was associated with an increased probability of violent re-offending. These results confirm the effectiveness of this cognitive-behavioral treatment -which targets risk factors associated with sexual aggression as well as those associated with violence in general-in ASO.

The Unusual Suspects: Multiple-Perpetrator and Multiple Concurrent Victim Sexual Homicide

Sexual homicide typically implies a crime involving two people: perpetrator and victim. Thus, multiple-perpetrator and multiple concurrent victim sexual murderers are unusual, empirically invisible due to their exclusion from (or burying within) research samples. The present study examines 21 such cases of male sexual murderers having perpetrated at least one sexual homicide either together with a co-offender or alone but killing two victims at once. The aim was to investigate just how unusual, or not, these cases may be in relation to current scientific understanding of sexual murderers and their crimes. A descriptive analysis of offenses (co-offender and offender-victim dynamics, modus operandi) and offender characteristics is presented. Main findings, that multiple-perpetrator and multiple concurrent victim sexual murderers are not so unusual in that they are well conceptualized through application of the established sexualized, grievance, and rape murderer typology, are discussed in relation to clinical and empirical implications.

Sexual Homicide in France

The primary objective of this study was to describe and compare the modus operandi, and associated contextual and situational factors, of French serial sexual murderers (SSMs) and nonserial sexual murderers (NSMs). A further objective was to verify the generalizability of the conclusions of James and Proulx's 2016 systematic review of the modus operandi of sexual murderers, the majority of whom were American or English. Detailed data on the precrime, modus operandi, postcrime, and victimology factors of 120 French sexual murderers (SSMs: n = 33; NSMs: n = 87) were compared. The results suggest that choice-structuring properties that shape the modus operandi of French sexual murderers are similar to those reported by James and Proulx: The modus operandi of French SSMs was shaped by homicidal, sadistic, and rape fantasies, while that of NSMs was shaped by the need to satisfy immediate, especially sexual, needs. However, it should be noted that while the modus operandi of American and English NSMs is primarily shaped by general deviance, that of French NSMs appear be primarily shaped by sexual deviance.

The Etiology of Risk in Sexual Offenders: A Preliminary Model

Sexual offender risk assessment practice is considered by many to be atheoretical. The identification of the most predictive risk factors and tools has typically overshadowed questions about etiology. To gain insight into the origins of criminal behavior among sexual offenders, we developed and validated an etiological model of risk based on the theoretical framework of Beech and Ward. Our model focused on persistence rather than onset, and encompassed both the sexual and nonsexual criminal activity of these offenders. It comprised two pathways. The first was characterized by sexual victimization, social isolation, and early deviant sexual fantasies. It led to a prolific involvement in sexual criminality (especially toward children) and predicted sexual recidivism. The second pathway was characterized by externalization problems, sexual promiscuity, and physical/psychological victimization, and was associated with nonsexual offending and serious sexual offenses directed (mostly) toward women. It predicted all types of recidivism.

Assessment in Work Productivity and the Relationship with Cognitive Symptoms (AtWoRC): primary analysis from a Canadian open-label study of vortioxetine in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD)

OBJECTIVE

The Assessment in Work Productivity and the Relationship with Cognitive Symptoms (AtWoRC) study aimed to assess the association between cognitive symptoms and work productivity in gainfully employed patients receiving vortioxetine for a major depressive episode (MDE).

METHODS

Patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and treated with vortioxetine independently of study enrollment were assessed over 52 weeks at visits that emulated a real-life setting. Patients were classified as those receiving vortioxetine as the first treatment for their current MDE (first treatment) or having shown inadequate response to a previous antidepressant (switch). The primary endpoint was the correlation between changes in patient-reported cognitive symptoms (20-item Perceived Deficits Questionnaire [PDQ-D-20]) and changes in work productivity loss (Work Limitations Questionnaire [WLQ]) at week 12. Additional assessments included changes in symptom and disease severity, cognitive performance, functioning, work loss, and safety.

RESULTS

In the week 12 primary analysis, 196 eligible patients at 26 Canadian sites were enrolled, received at least one treatment dose, and attended at least one postbaseline study visit. This analysis demonstrated a significant, strong correlation between PDQ-D-20 and WLQ productivity loss scores (r=0.634; p<0.001), and this correlation was significant in both first treatment and switch patients (p<0.001). A weaker correlation between Digit Symbol Substitution Test and WLQ scores was found (r=-0.244; p=0.003).

CONCLUSION

At 12 weeks, improvements in cognitive dysfunction were significantly associated with improvements in workplace productivity in patients with MDD, suggesting a role for vortioxetine in functional recovery in MDD.

Real-life assessment of aripiprazole monthly (Abilify Maintena) in schizophrenia: a Canadian naturalistic non-interventional prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

With previously established efficacy of aripiprazole once-monthly injectable formulation (AOM) in pre-registration randomized controlled trials, the current study was designed to evaluate its effectiveness in patients treated for schizophrenia in regular clinical settings in Canada.

METHODS

Following their clinicians' decision to prescribe AOM, 193 patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, were recruited from 17 Canadian community or hospital-based settings. The primary outcome of global functioning was assessed with the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale (GAF) at 3-month intervals for 1 year. Secondary outcomes (social and occupational functioning and illness severity) and adverse drug reactions (ADR) were also assessed.

RESULTS

A majority of the 169 evaluable patients were within the first 5 years of diagnosis (early phase). A linear mixed model analysis showed a significant main effect of time (Type III test p < 0.001) after adjusting for baseline GAF score, with a change in mean GAF scores from 49 at baseline to 61 at 12 months. No differences between early vs late phase were observed. Results on secondary outcome measures of function (Social and Occupational Functioning Scale) and illness severity (Clinical Global Impression-Severity Scale and Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale) were similar. Serious ADRs were observed in 29 (14.6%) patients and akathisia in 18 (9.1%) patients. At month-12, significant (≥7%) weight gain was observed in 25.7% (n = 27/105) of patients.

CONCLUSIONS

Treatment with AOM is effective in improving symptoms and functioning in schizophrenia patients treated in regular clinical settings. Akathisia was infrequent while one quarter of patients gained clinically significant weight.

Sexual Interests of Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSEM) Consumers: Four Patterns of Severity Over Time

This study analyzed the evolution over time of the activity of consumers of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM). To this end, images and metadata were extracted from the hard drives of 40 individuals convicted of possession of child pornography and analyzed. A sample of these images ( N = 61,244) was categorized by the age of the subjects depicted and-using the Combating Paedophile Information Networks in Europe (COPINE) scale-by severity of the acts depicted. Collecting activity was observed to follow four patterns. The most prevalent pattern was a progressive decrease in the age of the person depicted and a progressive increase in the severity of the sexual acts. In light of the results, we propose four explanations of the nature of, and variations in, child-pornography collections.

An Opportunity View of Child Sexual Offending: Investigating Nonpersuasion and Circumstances of Offending Through Criminological Lens

The empirical evidence indicating that sexual offenders against children manipulate their victims to participate in sexual activities dominates the literature on sex offenders and their modus operandi. However, recent evidence suggests that a high proportion of these offenders do not try to persuade their victims for sexual contact in the first place by using coercion or manipulation but simply assault them when an opportunity arises. Using self-reported data from a sample of incarcerated adult sexual offenders against children, we investigate whether sexual offenses against children committed by the use of nonpersuasion are characterized by little planning and by offense features that are indicative of opportunistic offending. We also examine the interaction between the type of offending strategy and the context of abuse. Findings reveal that offenders using nonpersuasion do not seek out potential victims, but rather seize an opportunity to offend. The type of offending strategy also interacts with the context of abuse for most preoffense and offense variables. These interactions are informative of the conditions favoring opportunistic sex offending against children.

Three Central Dimensions of Sexual Recidivism Risk: Understanding the Latent Constructs of Static-99R and Static-2002R

The most commonly used risk assessment tools for predicting sexual violence focus almost exclusively on static, historical factors. Consequently, they are assumed to be unable to directly inform the selection of treatment targets, or evaluate change. However, researchers using latent variable models have identified three dimensions in static actuarial scales for sexual offenders: Sexual Criminality, General Criminality, and a third dimension centered on young age and aggression to strangers. In the current study, we examined the convergent and predictive validity of these dimensions, using psychological features of the offender (e.g., antisocial traits, hypersexuality) and recidivism outcomes. Results indicated that (a) Sexual Criminality was related to dysregulation of sexuality toward atypical objects, without intent to harm; (b) General Criminality was related to antisocial traits; and (c) Youthful Stranger Aggression was related to a clear intent to harm the victim. All three dimensions predicted sexual recidivism, although only General Criminality and Youthful Stranger Aggression predicted nonsexual recidivism. These results indicate that risk tools for sexual violence are multidimensional, and support a shift from an exclusive focus on total scores to consideration of subscales measuring psychologically meaningful constructs.

Sexual Aggressors Against Women's Sexual Lives: A Latent Class Analysis

This study investigated the day-to-day deviant and nondeviant sexuality of a sample of Canadian sexual aggressors against women ( N = 160). Using latent class analysis, three latent classes were identified: internalized deviant (ID), low sexual problem (LSP), and hypersexual deviant (HD). Following the latent class analysis, the developmental, physiological, cognitive, and criminological correlates of these lifestyles were analyzed. ID ( n = 31) aggressors were characterized by sexual dissatisfaction, sexual deviance, and a bland sexual life. LSP ( n = 116) aggressors were characterized by the absence of sexual deviance or hypersexuality. HD ( n = 13) aggressors were characterized by hypersexuality and sexual deviance. Our exploratory study suggests that the day-to-day nondeviant and deviant sexual life of sexual aggressors against women appear to affect their modus operandi. Furthermore, the adult sexual lifestyles of sexual aggressors against women appear to be extensions of their adolescent sexual lifestyles. The results of this study thus suggest avenues for research-notably, the specific influence of sexual behaviours and internalized psychosexual problems on modus operandi-that could improve the clinical management of sexual aggressors against women.

Convergent Validity of Three Measures of Sexual Sadism: Value of a Dimensional Measure

Sexual sadism can be described as the sexual pleasure produced by acts of cruelty and bodily punishment. The most common method for evaluating sexual sadism is clinical evaluation, that is, evaluation based on the diagnostic criteria of nosological instruments such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM) or the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). It is also possible to evaluate sadistic sexual preferences by phallometry, which provides a physiological measure of sexual excitation by deviant and nondeviant scenarios. The most recently developed evaluation method is the Severe Sexual Sadism Scale (SESAS), a dimensional instrument that has been empirically validated. Despite the availability of all these measurement techniques, very little research has been conducted on their degree of convergence. Consequently, the aim of the current study was to assess the relationship between these three measures of sexual sadism. Our analyses were conducted on a sample of rapists ( N = 72), assessed in a maximum-security penitentiary. There was no significant relation between phallometric scores and other measures of sexual sadism. There was, however, an important correlation between SESAS scores and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV) sexual sadism diagnosis. Our results are consistent with other phallometric studies, which reported no difference in the penile responses of individuals diagnosed as sadists and those not diagnosed as sadists. Results and implications for future research are discussed.

Tofacitinib withdrawal and retreatment in moderate-to-severe chronic plaque psoriasis: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Tofacitinib is an oral Janus kinase inhibitor being investigated for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

OBJECTIVES

To compare outcomes following tofacitinib withdrawal with outcomes of continuation.

METHODS

In this phase 3 study (NCT01186744), patients received tofacitinib 5 mg (n = 331) or 10 mg (n = 335) twice daily for 24 weeks. The patients who achieved both ≥ 75% reduction in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 75) score from baseline and Physician's Global Assessment (PGA) of 'clear' or 'almost clear' (PGA response) received a placebo (withdrawal) or the previous dose. At relapse (> 50% reduction in the PASI improvement during initial treatment) or week 40, the patients received the initial dose.

RESULTS

Initial treatment: 33·5% and 55·2% achieved both PASI 75 and PGA responses with tofacitinib 5 and 10 mg twice daily, respectively, making them eligible for the treatment-withdrawal period. Withdrawal: 56·2%, 62·3%, 23·3% and 26·1% maintained PASI 75 responses with tofacitinib 5, 10 mg, placebo (5 mg) and placebo (10 mg) twice daily, respectively; 49·9%, 63·9%, 22·9% and 18·0% maintained PGA responses; and 92·3%, 93·0%, 32·8% and 42·9% did not relapse. Elevations in low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels following initial treatment (mean increase: 8·71 mg dL(-1) with 5 mg twice daily, 10·26 mg dL(-1) with 10 mg twice daily) were reversed upon withdrawal. Retreatment: 36·8% and 61·0% of patients who relapsed achieved PASI 75 responses with tofacitinib 5 or 10 mg after 16 weeks; 44·8% and 57·1% regained PGA responses.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients who received continuous treatment maintained a response more effectively when compared with placebo recipients. Safety profiles were comparable in both the continuous treatment group and retreatment group. Of those patients who relapsed, up to 60% recaptured a response with tofacitinib.

Correlates of recidivism among adolescents who have sexually offended

The present study investigates the recidivism rates of a sample of 351 male adolescents who sexually offended, and were assessed at an outpatient psychiatric clinic in Montreal, Canada, between 1992 and 2002. The mean age of the participants was 15.8 years (SD=1.8). Data on adolescent and adult recidivism were collected in Summer 2005 from official criminality sources in Canada. Over an 8-year follow-up period, 45% (n=158) of the participants were charged with a new criminal offense, 30% (n=104) were charged with a violent offense, and 10% (n=36) were charged with a sexual offense. Cox regression results suggest that overall, violent, and sexual recidivism can be predicted by a variety of developmental, social, and criminological factors. Paternal abandonment, childhood sexual victimization, association with significantly younger children, and having victimized a stranger were associated with a higher risk of sexual recidivism. Previous delinquency, attention deficit disorder, and childhood sexual victimization were found to increase the risk for both violent and overall recidivism. Also, the use of violence during a sex crime and victimizing a stranger were associated with violent recidivism, and school delay and association with delinquent peers were predictive of overall recidivism. The results confirm that a significant proportion of adolescents who have sexually offended pursue a criminal activity beyond adolescence, although few specialize in sexual offending.

Sexual affordances, perceptual-motor invariance extraction and intentional nonlinear dynamics: sexually deviant and non-deviant patterns in male subjects

Sexual arousal and gaze behavior dynamics are used to characterize deviant sexual interests in male subjects. Pedophile patients and non-deviant subjects are immersed with virtual characters depicting relevant sexual features. Gaze behavior dynamics as indexed from correlation dimensions (D2) appears to be fractal in nature and significantly different from colored noise (surrogate data tests and recurrence plot analyses were performed). This perceptual-motor fractal dynamics parallels sexual arousal and differs from pedophiles to non-deviant subjects when critical sexual information is processed. Results are interpreted in terms of sexual affordance, perceptual invariance extraction and intentional nonlinear dynamics.

Penile-response profiles of sexual aggressors during phallometric testing

This study analyzes sexual-preference profiles in a sample of 420 sexual aggressors who exhibited a valid profile during their initial phallometric assessment. The sexual stimuli used in the process were audiotapes describing sexual-offending scenarios. Two types of sexual stimuli sets were used: one developed for sexual aggressors against women and a second developed for sexual aggressors against children. Penile responses were recorded during stimulus presentation using a mercury-in-rubber strain gauge. Classification analyses (hierarchical and K-means clustering combination) were conducted separately for three groups of sexual aggressors: (a) sexual aggressors against children (n = 253), (b) sexual aggressors against women (n = 138), and (c) mixed sexual aggressors (n = 29). The sexual aggressors against children exhibited four penile-response profiles, the sexual aggressors against women two penile-response profiles, and the mixed sexual aggressors only one penile-response profile. In addition, analyses carried out on randomly split subsamples established that the generated profiles for sexual aggressors against children and sexual aggressors against women were stable.

Heterogeneity in antisocial trajectories in youth of adult sexual aggressors of women: an examination of initiation, persistence, escalation, and aggravation

Recent explanatory models of sexual aggression of women have emphasized the role of an antisocial tendency in explaining sexual aggression. If those models agree about the importance of an antisocial propensity, they disagree about the presence of a single or multiple pathways leading to sexual aggression. Currently, no empirical studies have examined within-individual changes of antisocial behavior in youth of sexual aggressors of women and whether those changes are related to the unfolding of the sexual and nonsexual criminal activity in adulthood. This study examines the presence of antisocial trajectories in childhood and adolescence using a sample of 209 convicted adult sexual aggressors of women. A dynamic classification procedure using cluster analyses yields five distinct antisocial trajectories, which are then compared using analysis of covariance on various parameters of criminal activity in adulthood. The results highlight the heterogeneity of antisocial development in youth of adult sexual aggressors of women. Patterns of initiation, persistence, and escalation in youth are related to the general, violent, and sexual offending in adulthood.

Sexual murderers of children: developmental, precrime, crime, and postcrime factors

The amount of empirical research on men who commit sexual murders is scarce, and no distinction has been made between those who have victimized adults and those who have victimized children. Therefore, to better understand specifically sexual murderers of children (n = 11), comparisons were performed with a group of sexual murderers of adult women (n = 66) on developmental, precrime, crime, and postcrime factors. It appears that sexual murderers of children are more often victims of sexual abuse during childhood and present more often deviant sexual fantasies as compared to sexual murderers of women. The results show also that sexual murderers of children more often use pornography prior to crime, have contact with the victim prior to crime, and commit a crime more often characterized by premeditation, strangulation, the hiding of the body, and its dismemberment than the sexual murderers of women.

Modus operandi and situational aspects in adolescent sexual offenses against children: a further examination

The relationship between situational factors and the modus operandi of 103 adolescents involved in sexual offenses against children (12 years old or younger) is analyzed. Situational factors taken into account in this study are the location of the crime, the offender-victim relationship, and the presence of deviant sexual fantasies involving the victim prior to the offense. Modus operandi strategies were measured on the basis of participants' responses to Kaufman's Modus Operandi Questionnaire. Results indicate that modus operandi strategies are influenced by situational factors and that the offender's home, when no one else is home, is likely to be the place and the situation for adolescent offenders to adopt manipulative strategies. Suggestions are made regarding future modus operandi studies.

A classification of sexual homicide against men

The observation and description of 10 cases of sexual murderers of adult male victims lead to the identification of significant differences between this type of sexual murderer and sexual murderers of adult female victims. A classification is proposed based on the description of the entire criminal event. Three distinctive types are identified: (a) the avenger, (b) the sexual predator, and (c) the nonsexual predator. The motivation and the characteristics of the entire criminal event, which includes the study of the offender, the victim, and the context of the crime are discussed for the three types.

Developmental factors related to deviant sexual preferences in child molesters

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between developmental factors and deviant sexual preferences in child molesters. In total, 146 adult males having committed a sexual offence against a child were included in the study. Three types of factors were investigated: negative experiences during childhood, behavior problems during adolescence, and sexual criminal activity in adulthood. Negative experiences and behavior problems were assessed through a semistructured interview. The sexual criminal activity was determined using police records. Sexual preferences towards children were assessed using phallometric assessment. Hierarchical regression analyses suggested the presence of two developmental pathways. The psychosocial deficits pathway is related to a sexual interest for nonviolent sexual stimuli involving children. The sexualization pathway is associated with a sexual interest for violent sexual stimuli involving children. These two pathways are discussed in light of previous empirical findings related to the development of deviant sexual preferences in child molesters.

On intelligence and crime: a comparison of incarcerated sex offenders and serious non-sexual violent criminals

The impact of low IQ on crime has been a focus of debate for several decades now. Although sociologists have virtually removed it from the list of possible factors influencing crime, the impact of IQ on crime continues to generate a significant amount of scientific research and a substantial number of publications. The purpose of this study is to assess intellectual levels and to compare two groups of incarcerated criminals. Using MANCOVA and ANCOVA procedures, 261 sex offenders and 150 non-sexual violent criminals were compared on IQ subscales. The results show significant differences on vocabulary, comprehension, arithmetic, mental math computations, object assembly, letter-number sequencing, and perception subscales, as well as on performance IQ and total IQ. The impacts of penal filtering and sample composition are hypothesized to explain differences between the two subgroups. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Criminal justice institutional referrals and selections: a comparative portrait of sexual aggressions and aggressors

The purpose of this study is to investigate the judicial treatment of sex offenders from police detection to treatment centers. Using three different samples, participants' trajectories are studied in the light of their age, the age and sex of their victims, the relationship with their victims, and the use of a weapon. First, the results show that although underrepresented at the federal institution, younger criminals tend to be overrepresented in the treatment sample. Second, the results also demonstrate that offenders against children tend to be overrepresented at the federal institution; this tendency is even stronger in the psychiatric treatment sample. Third, the objective seriousness of the offense, a proxy measured by the presence of a weapon, is of principal importance in case processing throughout the judicial system. Recommendations on how to facilitate the comparison of results from different studies, based on a better sample description, are also discussed.

An exploration of developmental factors related to deviant sexual preferences among adult rapists

The aim of this study was to investigate developmental factors related to deviant sexual preferences in a sample of 118 sexual aggressors against women. For each subject, developmental factors were collected through a semistructured interview, whereas sexual preferences were assessed phallometrically using French translations of audiotaped stimuli developed by G. G. Abel, E. B. Blanchard, J. V. Becker, and A. Djenderedjian (1978). Using multiple regression analyses, our results showed that a sexually inappropriate family environment, use of pornography during childhood and adolescence, and deviant sexual fantasies during childhood and adolescence are related to the development of deviant sexual preferences. These results are in agreement with Knight and Sims-Knight's model of sexual aggression (R. A. Knight & J. E. Sims-Knight, in press).

Profiles in the offending process of nonserial sexual murderers

The aim of this study was to investigate specific pathways in the offending processes of nonserial sexual murderers and to examine possible relationships with different precrime, per-crime, and postcrime factors. Included in this study were 36 offenders who have committed at least one sexual murder against a female victim and they were classified using cluster analysis. Participants using the sadistic pathway planned their offenses and used physical restraints during the offenses. Furthermore, they mutilated and humiliated their victims. Finally, they hid the bodies of the victims. Participants using the anger pathway had not premeditated the homicide. Mutilation, humiliation, and physical restraints were less predominant with these participants than with those using the sadistic pathway. Moreover, these offenders were more likely to leave the bodies at the crime scenes after the killings occurred. These two profiles are compared with empirical studies addressing sexual homicide.

Sexual aggressors' perceptions of effectiveness of strategies to cope with negative emotions and deviant sexual fantasies

The aim of this study was to investigate sexual aggressors' perceptions of effectiveness of strategies to cope with high-risk situations and their reasons for not using the adaptive coping strategies they learned in treatment. A total of 32 sexual aggressors, incarcerated in a maximum security psychiatric institution, filled out the Coping Strategy Report daily for 2 months. A lack of will, ignorance, and an emotional disturbance were the most frequently reported reasons for not using adaptive coping strategies to deal with a negative mood, whereas anticipation of failure and emotional disturbance were most frequently reported with interpersonal conflicts. For deviant sexual fantasies, child molesters most frequently reported a lack of will and an anticipation of failure as justification for not using adaptive coping strategies, whereas sexual aggressors of women most frequently reported a lack of will and emotional disturbance. For negative moods and interpersonal conflicts, behavioral strategies, such as social skills, were reported to be the most effective. Cognitive strategies, such as covert sensitization, were reported to be most effective for coping with deviant sexual fantasies. Theoretical and clinical implications of these results are discussed.

Victim-choice polymorphia among serious sex offenders

The victim-choice polymorphia of 178 sexual aggressors divided into six subtypes, incest offenders, pseudoincest offenders, sexual aggressors of familiar children, sexual aggressors of unfamiliar children, sexual aggressors of familiar women, and sexual aggressors of unfamiliar women, was compared. Results showed that sex offenders remained stable in their choice of victim from one offence to another in terms of victim age, victim gender, and aggressor-victim relationship. Subjects characterised by high levels of polymorphia were pseudoincest offenders and sexual aggressors of familiar women, whereas sexual aggressors of both unfamiliar women and unfamiliar children were characterised by low levels of polymorphia. Recommendations regarding how to further refine sex offender typologies are discussed.

Characterization and immunohistochemical localization of nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (NTPDase) in pig adrenal glands (presence of a non-sedimentable isoform)

Considering that adrenal glands possess a variety of purinoceptors associated with various cell types and that some of these cells (chromaffin cells) secrete large amounts of adenine nucleotides, it was of interest to localize nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (NTPDase) in these glands and to define the biochemical characteristics of this ectonucleotidase. Immunolocalization produced a moderate reaction in capsula and medulla, with no signal in zona glomerulosa and zona reticularis. In contrast, a very strong reaction was found in zona fasciculata. Biochemical analysis of particulate fractions isolated from whole glands revealed high levels of ATPase and ADPase activities. This appeared to be attributable to the NTPDase since the level of ADPase was as high as ATPase. Both ATPase and ADPase activities were similarly inhibited by sodium azide. Additionally electrophoretograms with these two substrates showed comparable patterns. Western blots with 'Ringo', an antibody that recognizes the different isoforms of mammalian NTPDases, showed the presence of isoforms of NTPDases at 54 and 78 kDa, respectively. Interestingly, the 54 kDa isoform remains in the supernatant of a chromaffin granule lysate after ultracentrifugation. Up until now little interest has been given to the relationship between adrenal medulla and cortex. Presence of purinoceptors and ectonucleotidases in both these regions together with the effects of ATP in vivo and in vitro in different species indicate that purines play a significant role in adrenal glands.

Respiratory monitoring: arterial blood gas analysis, pulse oximetry, and end-tidal carbon dioxide analysis

The use of arterial blood gas analysis, pulse oximetry, and capnography has become commonplace in the assessment of veterinary patients. Blood gas analysis allows for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of both metabolic and respiratory acid-base problems, including the interrelationships between ventilation, oxygenation, and metabolic conditions. Blood gas analysis is a useful adjunct to clinical patient assessment and other diagnostics in determining appropriate therapy for specific and complex conditions. Both pulse oximetry and capnography are useful monitoring tools. However, they have technical limitations and cannot comprehensively evaluate patient oxygenation and ventilation. Pulse oximetry and capnography are not replacements for arterial blood gas analysis, but rather serve as adjunctive monitoring tools.

Pathways in the offending process of extrafamilial sexual child molesters

The aim of the current study was to investigate specific pathways in the offending process of extrafamilial sexual child molesters. Forty-four men who had committed at least one sexual offense against a nonfamilial prepubescent child were included in this study and were classified using cluster analysis. Subjects using the coercive pathway (n = 30) had generally used psychoactive substances before their offenses. Furthermore, they had molested a female victim without perceived vulnerability and whom they had already well known. These molesters had not planned their offense, which was of short duration (less than 15 min), and involved coital activities and coercion (verbal and/or physical). Subjects using the noncoercive pathway (n = 14) had generally used pornography and deviant sexual fantasies before their offenses. Moreover, they had molested a male victim, in whom they perceived a psychosocial vulnerability and who was not familiar to them. These molesters had planned their offense, which was of longer duration (more than 15 min) and involved noncoital activities without coercion. These two pathways were compared to the two pathways in the offending process identified by Ward and his colleagues.

Hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia

The occurrence of hypocalcemia is well documented in clinical veterinary medicine. In this article, we have attempted to provide an overview of the established causes as well as information on more recently recognized etiologies such as the ionized hypocalcemia seen in cats with urethral obstruction and the presence of the disorder in critically ill patient populations. Hypomagnesemia has been identified as the most common electrolyte abnormality in canine and feline critically ill patients. Magnesium depletion and experience with supplementation appear to have most significance in diabetic ketoacidotic patients with the development of associated refractory hypokalemia. (N. Dhupa, BVM, MRCVS, unpublished observations, 1997). Although cardiac arrythmias are associated with hypomagnesemia in human patients, documentation of this association in veterinary patients is lacking. Because hypomagnesemia has been associated with other electrolyte abnormalities in human and veterinary populations, the detection of hypokalemia (particularly if refractory to therapy), hyponatremia, hypophosphatemia, or hypocalcemia should indicate the possibility of coexisting hypomagnesemia.

Is the Reaction Catalyzed by 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase a Rate-Limiting Step for Isoprenoid Biosynthesis in Plants?

3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR) catalyzes the irreversible conversion of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A to mevalonate and is considered a key regulatory step controlling isoprenoid metabolism in mammals and fungi. The rate-limiting nature of this enzyme for isoprenoid biosynthesis in plants remains controversial. To investigate whether HMGR activity could be limiting in plants, we introduced a constitutively expressing hamster HMGR gene into tabacco (Nicotiana tabaccum L.) plants to obtain unregulated HMGR activity. The impact of the resulting enzyme activity on the biosynthesis and accumulation of particular isoprenoids was evaluated. Expression of the hamster HMGR gene led to a 3- to 6-fold increase in the total HMGR enzyme activity. Total sterol accumulation was consequently increased 3- to 10-fold, whereas end-product sterols such as sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol were increased only 2-fold. The level of cycloartenol, a sterol biosynthetic intermediate, was increased more than 100-fold. Although the synthesis of total sterols appears to be limited normally by HMGR activity, these results indicate that the activity of one or more later enzyme(s) in the pathway must also be involved in determining the relative accumulation of end-product sterols. The levels of other isoprenoids such as carotenoids, phytol chain of chlorophyll, and sesquiterpene phytoalexins were relatively unaltered in the transgenic plants. It appears from these results that compartmentation, channeling, or other rate-determining enzymes operate to control the accumulation of these other isoprenoid end products.

Estrus synchronization efficiency of PGF2α injection in Shorthorn-Hereford and crossbred Charolais cattle not having exhibited estrus at 4 or 7 days prior to treatment

The objective of this study was to compare the estrus synchronization efficiency of PGF2alpha in cattle (n = 470) not having shown estrus for 4 (D4 treatment) or 7 d (D7 treatment) after onset of the breeding season. The physiological status of crossbred Charolais cows was studied, and their reproductive performance was compared to that of Shorthorn-Hereford cows. The percentage of cows in estrus during the 7 d prior to PGF2alpha treatment was superior (P < 0.01) to that observed during the 4 d preceding PGF2alpha. The daily rates of estrus were similar during the 2 periods. For both the Shorthorn-Hereford (87.8 vs 74.7%; P < 0.03) and crossbred Charolais (87.8 vs 66.3%; P < 0.005) females, the estrus synchronization rate during the 5 d post PGF2alpha was higher in treatment D7 than in the D4 treatment. Therefore, for both Shorthorn-Hereford (92.8 vs 81.4%) and crossbred Charolais (93.1 vs 75.0%) the D7 program permitted insemination in 12 d (before and after PGF2alpha) of a higher percentage (P < 0.01) of females than the D4 program did in 9 d. The intervals PGF2alpha to estrus and their variances were similar for both treatments. The conception rate of Shorthorn-Hereford was the same whether they were inseminated after spontaneous (73.4%) or PGF2alpha-induced estrus (D4 treatment: 78.5%; D7 treatment: 72.2%). However, crossbred Charolais cows inseminated after a PGF2alpha-induced estrus in the D4 treatment had a fertility rate (50.9%) slightly inferior (P < 0.07) to that of cows inseminated after spontaneous estrus (70.1%) or after PGF2alpha-induced estrus in the D7 treatment (67.4%). The reproductive performances of multiparous Shorthorn-Hereford and crossbred Charolais were similar in treatment D7; however, in the D4 treatment, the conception rate of Shorthorn-Hereford was higher than that of crossbred Charolais (81.0 vs 42.9%; P < 0.002). Primiparous crossbred Charolais in the D4 treatment had a slightly lower (P < 0.10) synchronization rate (48%) than nulliparous (71%) and multiparous crossbred Charolais (78%). In contrast, the reproductive performances of nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous crossbred Charolais were similar in the D7 treatment. These results indicate that the efficiency of PGF2alpha to synchronize estrus is greater when the estrus detection period increases from 4 to 7 d before PGF2alpha. Only in the D7 treatment was the fertility rate of crossbred Charolais similar to that of Shorthorn-Hereford.

Relationships between conflict, affect and deviant sexual behaviors in rapists and pedophiles

The aim of the current study was to determine the relationship in sexual offenders between conflict, affective states and particular sexual behaviors (fantasies and masturbatory activities while having such fantasies). To this end we developed the "Fantasy Report", a self-assessment method for recording affective components and sexual behaviors. Thirteen rapists and 9 pedophiles filled out the Fantasy Report every 2 days for a period of 60 days. In rapists, negative mood and the presence of conflicts coincided with both overwhelming deviant sexual fantasies and increased masturbatory activities while having such fantasies. Furthermore, the emotions most frequently reported by rapists following conflicts were loneliness, humiliation, anger and feelings of inadequacy and rejection. Affective components, however, were not associated with nondeviant sexual behaviors. For the pedophiles, the data revealed a significant relationship only between negative moods and deviant sexual fantasies. These data are interpreted to mean that, in sexual offenders, negative affect is a crucial component in the chain that leads to deviant sexual behaviors.

Penile responses of rapists and nonrapists to rape stimuli involving physical violence or humiliation

The sexual arousal profile of a subgroup of rapists with a history of low-level physical violence during their offenses was assessed. Twenty subjects participated: 10 rapists and 10 nonrapists. Stimuli consisted of audiotapes with the following five thematic contents: mutually consenting sexual activities; rape involving physical violence; rape involving humiliation; physical aggression without sexual activities; neutral. Penile responses were recorded during stimuli presentation using a mercury-in-rubber strain gauge. Data showed no differences between both groups for the rape stimuli involving physical violence. For the rape stimuli involving humiliation, however, the penile responses of the two groups differed. With those stimuli the average penile response of the rapists was higher than that of the nonrapists. Therefore, for this subgroup of rapists the association between sexual activities and humiliation presents a higher erotic value than the association between sexual activities and physical violence. Implication of these results as to the discriminant validity and classificatory accuracy of phallometry in rapists is discussed.

Comparaison de l'effet de deux analogues de la prostaglandine F2α sur la synchronisation de l'œstrus chez la vache de boucherie

The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of cloprostenol and fenprostalene in synchronizing estrus. Before treatment, estrus was detected during 4.5 d for multiparous cows in exp. 1 (n = 105) and 7.5 d for primiparous and nulliparous females in exp. 2 (n = 86). Females that were not in estrus (exp. 1: n = 74 and exp. 2: n = 58) received at random, either 500 μg of cloprostenol (i.m.) or 1 mg of fenprostalene (s.c). Cattle synchronized with cloprostenol or fenprostalene that presented estrus within 5 d showed similar fertility rates (exp. 1: 86.1% vs. 88.0% and exp. 2: 89.3% vs. 72.2% for cloprostenol and fenprostalene, respectively) and PGF2α-estrus intervals (exp. 1: 68 h vs. 73 h and exp. 2: 57 h vs. 57 h). However, the incidence of synchronization (exp. 1: 97.3% vs. 67.6%, P < 0.001; and exp. 2: 93.3% vs. 64.3%, P < 0.01) and pregnancy rates (exp. 1: 83.8% vs. 59.5%, P < 0.05; and exp. 2: 83.3% vs. 46.4%, P < 0.01) were statistically higher for cloprostenol than for fenprostalene. In exp. 2, primiparous cows and heifers obtained similar reproductive performances. The fertility rate of cattle treated with cloprostenol in exp. 2 was higher than that of untreated cattle (89.3% vs. 50.0%, P < 0.001, n = 56). In exp. 1, the variance of interval to estrus was similar for both analogues, but in exp. 2, it was less variable after the administration of cloprostenol (P < 0.05). Intervals between cloprostenol injection and estrus (0–10 and 0–15 d) were shorter (P < 0.05) and less variable (P < 0.001) than fenprostalene–estrus intervals. These results indicate that cloprostenol has a better potential for estrus synchronization than fenprostalene. Histological populations and atresia of ovarian follicles in postpartum cattle treated with an agonist of gonadotropin-releasing hormone

Surface and histological changes of ovarian follicles and degree of atresia were characterized 3 and 6 d after a treatment with a GnRH agonist (buserelin) in postpartum beef cows. Sixteen cyclic cows on d 7 of their estrous cycle and eight acyclic cows were used. On d 0 of the experimental period, eight cyclic cows were injected with 2 mL of physiological saline and the remaining eight cyclic cows and the acyclic cows were injected i.m. with 8 micrograms of buserelin. Ovaries were collected 3 or 6 d later (n = 4 cows per group per day). All follicles (> 1.57 mm) were observed microscopically, measured using routine histological techniques, and classified as either nonatretic or atretic, with early or late atresia, and grouped into Class 1, 1.57 to 3.67 mm, Class 2, 3.68 to 8.56 mm, or Class 3, > 8.56 mm. Buserelin induced formation of new corpora lutea in all cows but one (acyclic cow). Class 1 follicles decreased on d 3 but increased on d 6 (day x treatment, P < .004), whereas those of Class 2 increased (P < .07) on both d 3 and 6 after buserelin treatment. However, within Class 2 follicles, we detected an increase on d 3 and 6 in the number (P < .01) and proportion (P < .07) of atretic follicles, an increase in the number of follicles in late atresia on d 6 (day x treatment, P < .03), and a decrease in the number (P < .06) and proportion (P < .03) of nonatretic follicles on d 6 (day x treatment).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Sexual preference assessment of sexual aggressors: predictors of penile response magnitude

A current method used to assess the sexual preference of sexual aggressors is the recording of their penile responses during the presentation of erotic stimuli. This method is ineffective in subjects who do not obtain sufficient penile responses. Whether variables related either to the subjects or their crimes would correlate with the magnitude of penile responses during sexual preference assessment was studied. The penile responses of 92 subjects were recorded. Older and pre-sentencing subjects showed a lower maximum penile response magnitude than younger and sentenced subjects. Results are discussed as they relate to the validity of physiological assessment of sexual preference.
