Abstract
OBJECTIVE To define reference intervals (RIs) for arterial blood gas (aBG) measurements in healthy, nonsedated, dolichocephalic, and mesocephalic (nonbrachycephalic) dogs at approximately 1,535 m above sea level and compare these findings with healthy, nonsedated, brachycephalic dogs living at the same altitude. ANIMALS 120 adult nonbrachycephalic dogs and 20 adult brachycephalic dogs. METHODS Cases were prospectively enrolled from October 2021 to June 2022. Dogs were enrolled from the community or after presentation for wellness examinations or minor injuries including lacerations, nail injuries, and lameness. Physical examinations and systolic blood pressure (sBP) measurements were obtained before blood sample collection. Arterial blood was collected from the dorsal pedal artery or femoral artery. After data collection, brachycephalic dogs underwent pre- and postexercise tolerance assessments. RESULTS The mean and RI values for arterial pH (7.442; 7.375 to 7.515), partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood (Pao2; 78.3; 59.2 to 92.7 mm Hg), partial pressure of carbon dioxide in arterial blood (Paco2; 28.0; 21.5 to 34.4 mm Hg), saturation of arterial oxygen (Sao2; 98.4; 84.3% to 101.4%), HCO3 (18.9; 14.9 to 22.4 mmol/L), concentration of total hemoglobin (ctHb; 17.5; 13.4 to 21.1 g/dL), and sBP (133; 94 to 180 mm Hg) were established for healthy nonbrachycephalic dogs at 1,535-m altitude. All aBG measurements were statistically and clinically different from those previously reported for dogs at sea level. Brachycephalic dogs had significantly lower Pao2 and Sao2 (P = .0150 and P = .0237, respectively) and significantly higher ctHb (P = .0396) compared to nonbrachycephalic dogs acclimatized to the same altitude; the nonbrachycephalic RIs were not transferable to the brachycephalic dogs for Pao2. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study represents the first collation of aBG measurements for healthy nonbrachycephalic dogs acclimatized to an altitude of 1,535 m. Additionally, this study identified differences in arterial oxygenation measurements between brachycephalic and nonbrachycephalic dogs. RIs in brachycephalic dogs need to be established.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between oxygen reserve index (ORI) and arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) in anesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN Prospective experimental study. ANIMALS A total of eight healthy adult Beagle dogs with a median age of 38 (range 20-87) months and a median body mass of 8.6 (range 7.0-13.8) kg. METHODS After induction of general anesthesia with propofol, dogs were mechanically ventilated and anesthesia maintained with isoflurane carried in oxygen. Arterial blood samples were collected from a catheter placed in the femoral artery. ORI was measured by placing a CO-oximeter sensor on the tongue. Inspired oxygen fraction (FiO2) was increased from 21% to > 95% in increments of 5%. PaO2 and ORI were recorded and compared at different times. The relationship between ORI and PaO2 was investigated using a nonlinear function, the Hill equation, and a linear regression analysis was performed, as appropriate. RESULTS A total of 128 pairs of values were compared for all dogs. Applying the Hill equation to the relationship between ORI and PaO2 resulted in R2 = 0.80 (p < 0.001) with a Hill coefficient of 3.7. It was predicted that ORI ranged 0.1-0.9 as PaO2 ranged 127.0-417.9 mmHg and that in the more linear portion of the range, PaO2 of 127.0-289.9 mmHg ORI ranged 0.1-0.7. Linear regression analysis in the more linear portion showed a weak correlation (R2 = 0.29, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE In the present study, the Hill equation predicted the relationship between PaO2 and ORI for PaO2 ranging 127.0-417.9 mmHg in anesthetized dogs. However, in the linear portion of the PaO2, the coefficient of determination was low, indicating that ORI is not a surrogate for PaO2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The oxygen reserve index (ORi) is a real-time, continuous index measured with multi-wavelength pulse CO-oximetry technology. It estimates mild hyperoxemia in humans, which is defined as a partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) level between 100 and 200 mmHg. The objectives of this study were to assess the correlation between ORi and PaO2, as well as to determine its ability in detecting mild hyperoxemia in dogs. METHODS This prospective observational study enrolled 37 anaesthetised and mechanically ventilated dogs undergoing elective procedures. Simultaneous measurements of ORi and PaO2 were collected, using a multi-wavelength pulse CO-oximeter with a probe placed on the dog's tongue, and a blood gas analyser, respectively. A mixed-effects model was used to calculate the correlation (r2) between simultaneous measurements of ORi and PaO2. The trending ability of ORi to identify dependable and proportional changes of PaO2 was determined. The diagnostic performances of ORi to detect PaO2 ≥ 150 mmHg and ≥ 190 mmHg were estimated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). The effects of perfusion index (PI), haemoglobin (Hb), arterial blood pH and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) on AUROC for PaO2 ≥ 150 mmHg were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 101 paired measurements of ORi and PaO2 were collected. PaO2 values ranged from 74 to 258 mmHg. A strong positive correlation (r2 = 0.52, p < 0.001) was found between ORi and PaO2. The trending ability ORi was 90.7%, with 92% sensitivity and 89% specificity in detecting decreasing PaO2. An ORi value ≥ 0.53 and ≥ 0.76 indicated a PaO2 ≥ 150 and ≥ 190 mmHg, respectively, with ≥ 82% sensitivity, ≥ 77% specificity and AUROC ≥ 0.75. The AUROC of ORi was not affected by PI, Hb, pH and PaCO2. CONCLUSIONS In anaesthetised dogs, ORi may detect mild hyperoxaemia, although it does not replace blood gas analysis for measuring the arterial partial pressure of oxygen. ORi monitoring could be used to non-invasively assess oxygenation in dogs receiving supplemental oxygen, limiting excessive hyperoxia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Packed cell volume (PCV) is important for assessing a patient's health status. Some blood gas analyzers measure hematocrit, and the agreement with PCV varies among different analyzers. OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the agreement between PCV measured by microcentrifugation and hematocrit measured by the Cobas b121 blood gas analyzer in dogs, cats, and horses. METHODS Whole blood samples for PCV and blood gas analysis were collected in lithium-heparin syringes and analyzed within 10 min of collection. Agreement and association between the PCV and Cobas b121 generated hematocrit were assessed by the Bland-Altman method, Pearson's correlation, Deming regression analysis, and paired t tests. A total allowable error of 10% was used for the analysis. RESULTS This study included 45 dogs, 45 cats, and 33 horses. The respective mean ± SD (minimum-maximum) of PCVs and hematocrits were: dogs, 34.9 ± 9.9% (9.0-55.0) and 32.5 ± 8.8% (10.4-50.6); cats, 29.0 ± 9.6% (11.0-51.0) and 26.9 ± 9.3% (10.2-50.9); horses, 34.2 ± 6.5% (24.0-47.0) and 34.1 ± 6.0% (22.5-46.1). There were no significant differences between the methods. The bias ± SD was: dogs, -2.4 ± 2.6%; cats, -2.2 ± 2.3%; horses, -0.1 ± 2.4%. Pearson's correlation coefficients were > 0.90 for all species (P < 0.0001). In 60%, 49%, and 85% of the samples for dogs, cats, and horses, respectively, the percentage differences between the methods were within 10%. CONCLUSIONS The Cobas b121 blood gas analyzer provided accurate estimates of PCVs in horses. However, in dogs and cats, there was a large frequency of unacceptable differences between the methods.

Abstract
In veterinary medicine, point-of-care testing techniques have become popular, since they provide immediate results and only small amounts of blood are needed. The handheld i-STAT1 blood analyzer is used by poultry researchers and veterinarians; however, no studies have evaluated the accuracy of this analyzer determined reference intervals in turkey blood. The objectives of this study were to 1) investigate the effect of storage time on turkey blood analytes, 2) compare the results obtained by the i-STAT1 analyzer to those obtained by the GEM Premier 3000, a conventional laboratory analyzer, and 3) establish reference intervals for blood gases and chemistry analytes in growing turkeys using the i-Stat. For the first and second objectives, we used the CG8+ i-STAT1 cartridges to test blood from 30 healthy turkeys in triplicate and once with the conventional analyzer. To establish the reference intervals, we tested a total 330 blood samples from healthy turkeys from 6 independent flocks during a 3-yr period. Blood samples were then divided into brooder (<1 wk) and growing (1-12 wk of age). Friedman's test demonstrated significant time-dependent changes in blood gas analytes, but not for electrolytes. Bland-Altman analysis revealed that there was agreement between the i-STAT1 and the GEM Premier 300 for most of the analytes. However, Passing-Bablok regression analysis identified constant and proportional biases in the measurement of multiple analytes. Tukey's test revealed significant differences in the whole blood analytes between the means of brooding and growing birds. The data presented in the present study provide a basis for measuring and interpreting blood analytes in the brooding and growing stages of the turkey lifecycle, offering a new approach to health monitoring in growing turkeys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND "Arterialization" of the dorsal hand vein is well-established in human medicine, but not in veterinary medicine. OBJECTIVES To compare cephalic and saphenous venous blood collected by continuously heating the paws to 37°C ("arterialization"), with arterial blood (AB) for measurement of blood gas variables in well-perfused dogs. ANIMALS Eight healthy dogs. METHODS Experimental study. Fore and hind paws were continuously heated to 37°C to "arterialize" cephalic and saphenous venous blood. AB and "arterialized" cephalic and saphenous venous blood (ACV and ASV, respectively) were simultaneously collected from lightly anesthetized dogs with induced metabolic and respiratory acid-base disorders. The pH, partial pressures of carbon dioxide (PCO2 ) and oxygen (PO2 ), bicarbonate concentration [HCO3 - ], and base excess (BE) were measured once in each state. Systolic blood pressure was maintained above 100 mm Hg. The AB, ACV, and ASV values were compared. RESULTS The pH, [HCO3 - ], and BE values had no significant difference and good agreement, the PCO2 values had a strong correlation (correlation coefficient of .91-1.00), and the PO2 values had a significant difference (P < .01) and poor agreement between AB and ACV, and between AB and ASV. The PCO2 values of ASV overestimated those of AB by ~3.0 mm Hg, which was considered within clinically allowable limits, while those of ACV were not within clinically allowable limits. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Under experimental conditions, the ASV samples were more identical to the AB samples than the ACV samples for pH, PCO2 , [HCO3 - ], and BE values in well-perfused dogs. The saphenous vein is suitable for "arterialization."

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of various flow rates and fractions of oxygen on arterial blood gas parameters and on the fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) delivered to the distal trachea. Oxygen was administered to 6 healthy, conscious, standing, adult horses via single nasal cannula positioned within the nasopharynx. Three flow rates (5, 15, 30 L/min) and fractions of oxygen (21, 50, 100%) were delivered for 15 minutes, each in a randomized order. FIO2 was measured at the level of the nares and distal trachea. Adverse reactions were not observed with any flow rate. FIO2 (nares and trachea) and PaO2 increased with increasing flow rate and fraction of oxygen (P < .0001). FIO2 (trachea) was significantly less than FIO2 (nares) at 50% and 100% oxygen at all flow rates (P < .0001). Differences in PaO2 were not observed between 100% oxygen-5L/min and 50% oxygen-15L/min and or between 100% oxygen-15L/min and 50% oxygen-30L/min. Tracheal FIO2 for 100% oxygen-15L/min was increased compared to 50% oxygen-30L/min (P < .0001). Respiratory rate, ETCO2, PaCO2, and pH did not differ between treatments. Administration of 50% oxygen via nasal cannula at 15 and 30 L/min effectively increased in PaO2 and was well tolerated in conscious, standing, healthy horses. While these results can be used guide therapy in hypoxemic horses, evaluation of the administration of 50% oxygen to horses with respiratory disease is warranted.

Abstract
Surplus dairy calves often arrive at veal and dairy-beef rearing facilities with health and blood metabolite level abnormalities, which can affect their welfare and performance, predisposing them to future health challenges. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to investigate the effects of transport duration and age at the time of transport on blood parameters in surplus dairy calves following 6, 12, or 16 h of continuous road transportation. All surplus calves from 5 commercial dairy farms in Ontario were enrolled and examined daily before transport (n = 175). On the day of transportation, calves were weighed, blood sampled, and randomly assigned to 6, 12, or 16 h of transportation. Blood samples were then collected immediately after transportation, as well as 24, 48, and 72 h thereafter. Serum was analyzed at a provincial diagnostic laboratory for nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), creatine kinase (CK), cholesterol, and haptoglobin. In addition, blood gas and electrolyte values were also assessed at the time of sample collection. Mixed models with repeated measures were used to assess the effects of transport duration, breed, sex, transfer of passive immunity status, weight before transportation, and age at transportation on blood parameters. Immediately following transportation, NEFA and BHBA were greater for calves transported for 12 h (Δ = 0.22 mmol/L NEFA, 95% CI = 0.15 to 0.30; Δ = 0.04 mmol/L BHBA, 95% CI = 0.02 to 0.06) and 16 h (Δ = 0.35 mmol/L NEFA, 95% CI = 0.27 to 0.42; Δ = 0.10 mmol/L BHBA, 95% CI = 0.08 to 0.11) compared with calves transported for 6 h. Glucose was lower immediately following transportation in calves transported for 16 h compared with 6 h (Δ = -15.54 mg/dL, 95% CI = -21.54 to -9.54). In addition, pH and HCO3- were lower in calves transported for 12 (Δ = -0.09 pH, 95% CI = -0.13 to -0.05; Δ = -1.59 mmol/L HCO3-, 95% CI = -2.61 to -0.56) and 16 h (Δ = -0.07 pH, 95% CI = -0.12 to -0.03; Δ = -1.95 mmol/L HCO3-, 95% CI = -2.95 to -0.95) compared with calves transported for 6 h. Calves transported between 15 and 19 d of age had a higher concentration of cholesterol and CK (Δ = 0.27 mmol/L cholesterol; 37.18 U/L CK) compared with 2- to 6-d-old calves, and calves 12 to 14 d old had greater reduction in HCO3- (Δ = -0.92 mmol/L) compared with 2- to 6-d-old calves. These findings show that transporting calves for long distances results in lower glucose concentration and suboptimal energy status, and that this effect varies based on the calf's age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of 2 different oxygen delivery strategies-intranasal and tracheal insufflation-on the inspired fraction of oxygen (FIO2) in standing horses and to determine the time needed for arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO2) equilibration. ANIMALS 6 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURES In this blinded, randomized crossover design study, horses were randomly assigned to receive oxygen via nasal cannula (group N) or transcutaneous tracheal catheter (group T). After placement of venous and arterial catheters, FIO2 was measured through a catheter placed into the distal portion of the trachea. After baseline measurements were obtained, horses received oxygen at up to 25 mL/kg/min for 1 hour via either intranasal or intratracheal catheter. The FIO2 and PaO2 were recorded at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, and 60 minutes during and 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 minutes after oxygen insufflation. Data were analyzed by use of a 2-way repeated measures ANOVA with Tukey-Kramer post hoc testing for pairwise comparisons (P < 0.05). RESULTS During oxygen administration, FIO2 and PaO2 increased significantly when compared with baseline, resulting in significantly higher values for group T (37.7 ± 2.4%; 214.6 ± 18 mm Hg) than for group N (34.3 ± 3.9%; 184.1 ± 11 mm Hg). The equilibration time was less than 10 minutes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Intratracheal oxygen administration resulted in better oxygenation than nasal insufflation and should therefore be considered in standing horses that are experiencing severe respiratory compromise. The equilibration between FIO2 and PaO2 is rapid in adult horses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mechanical ventilation is usually achieved by active lung inflation during inspiration and passive lung emptying during expiration. By contrast, flow-controlled expiration (FLEX) ventilation actively reduces the rate of lung emptying by causing linear gas flow throughout the expiratory phase. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of FLEX on lung compliance and gas exchange in anesthetized horses in dorsal recumbency. ANIMALS 8 healthy horses. PROCEDURES All animals were anesthetized twice and either ventilated beginning with FLEX or conventional volume-controlled ventilation in a randomized, crossover design. Total anesthesia time was 3 hours, with the ventilatory mode being changed after 1.5 hours. During anesthesia, cardiac output (thermodilution), mean arterial blood pressures, central venous pressure, and pulmonary arterial pressure were recorded. Further, peak, plateau, and mean airway pressures and dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn) were measured. Arterial blood gases were analyzed every 15 minutes. Data were analyzed using ANOVA (P < 0.05). RESULTS FLEX ventilation resulted in significantly higher arterial oxygen partial pressures (521 vs 227 mm Hg) and Cdyn (564 vs 431 mL/cm H2O) values compared to volume-controlled ventilation. The peak and plateau airway pressure were lower, but mean airway pressure was significantly higher (4.8 vs 9.2 cm H2O) in FLEX ventilated horses. No difference for cardiovascular parameters were detected. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The results of this study showed a significant improvement of the Pao2 and Cdyn without compromising the cardiovascular system when horses were ventilated by use of FLEX compared to conventional ventilation.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of currently available pulmonary function tests in cats, divided into invasive and non-invasive methods. Invasive techniques comprise arterial blood gas analysis and measurement of pulmonary mechanics. Non-invasive techniques include pulse oximetry and capnography, as well as methods not yet integrated into everyday practice such as tidal breathing airflow-volume loops, whole-body barometric plethysmography and thorax compression. In this article, the background, execution, interpretation, and limitations of each test are discussed. Proper performance and assessment of pulmonary function measurements may aid in understanding the pathophysiology of feline respiratory disease and in increasing objectivity when assessing the existing disease and treatment efficacy.

Abstract
Many point-of-care (POC) analyzers are available for the measurement of electrolytes and acid-base status in animals. We assessed the precision of the i-STAT Alinity v, a recently introduced POC analyzer, and compared it to 2 commonly used and previously validated POC analyzers (i-STAT 1, Stat Profile pHOx Ultra). Precision was evaluated by performing multiple analyses of whole blood samples from healthy dogs, cats, and horses on multiple i-STAT Alinity v analyzers. For comparison between analyzers, whole blood samples from dogs and cats presented to the emergency room were run concurrently on all 3 POC instruments. Reported values were compared by species (dogs and cats only) using Pearson correlation, and all values from all species were analyzed together for the Bland-Altman analysis. Results suggested that the i-STAT Alinity v precision was very good, with median coefficients of variability <2.5% for all measured parameters (except the anion gap), with variable ranges of coefficients of variation. In addition, good-to-excellent correlation was observed between the i-STAT Alinity v and i-STAT 1, and between the i-STAT Alinity v and Stat Profile pHOx Ultra for all parameters in both cats and dogs, respectively. In this cohort, the i-STAT Alinity v had clinically acceptable bias compared to the currently marketed analyzers and can be used for monitoring measured analytes in cats and dogs, although serial measurements in a single animal should be performed on the same analyzer whenever possible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess agreement between 2 benchtop blood gas analyzers developed by 1 manufacturer (BGA 1 and BGA 2 [a newer model with reduced maintenance requirements]) and a reference chemistry analyzer for measurement of electrolyte (sodium, chloride, and potassium) in blood samples from dogs. ANIMALS 17 healthy staff- and student-owned dogs and 23 client-owned dogs admitted to an emergency and intensive care service. PROCEDURES Blood collected by venipuncture was placed in lithium heparin-containing tubes. Aliquots were analyzed immediately with each BGA. Samples were centrifuged, and plasma was analyzed with the reference analyzer. Results for each BGA were compared with results for the reference analyzer by Passing-Bablok regression analysis. Percentage differences between BGA and reference analyzer results were compared with published guidelines for total allowable error. RESULTS Proportional bias was detected for measurement of chloride concentration (slope, 0.7; 95% CI, 0.7 to 0.8), and constant positive bias was detected for measurement of chloride (y-intercept, 34, mmol/L; 95% CI, 16.9 to 38 mmol/L) and potassium (y-intercept, 0.1 mmol/L; 95% CI, 0.1 to 0.2 mmol/L) concentrations with BGA 1. There was no significant bias for measurement of potassium or chloride concentration with BGA 2 or sodium concentration with either BGA. Differences from the reference analyzer result exceeded total allowable error guidelines for ≥ 1 sample/analyte/BGA, but median observed measurement differences between each BGA and the reference analyzer did not. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Good agreement with reference analyzer results was found for measurement of the selected electrolyte concentrations in canine blood samples with each BGA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare values of haemoglobin concentration (SpHb), arterial haemoglobin saturation (SpO2) and calculated arterial oxygen content (SpOC), measured noninvasively with a pulse co-oximeter before and after in vivo adjustment (via calibration of the device using a measured haemoglobin concentration) with those measured invasively using a spectrophotometric-based blood gas analyser in anaesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN Prospective observational clinical study. ANIMALS A group of 39 adult dogs. METHODS In all dogs after standard instrumentation, the dorsal metatarsal artery was catheterised for blood sampling, and a pulse co-oximeter probe was applied to the tongue for noninvasive measurements. Paired data for SpHb, SpO2 and SpOC from the pulse co-oximeter and haemoglobin arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) and arterial oxygen content (CaO2) from the blood gas analyser were obtained before and after in vivo adjustment. Bland-Altman analysis for repeated measurements was used to evaluate the bias, precision and agreement between the pulse co-oximeter and the blood gas analyser. Data are presented as mean differences and 95% limits of agreement (LoA). RESULTS A total of 39 data pairs were obtained before in vivo adjustment. The mean invasively measured haemoglobin-SpHb difference was -2.7 g dL-1 with LoA of -4.9 to -0.5 g dL-1. After in vivo adjustment, 104 data pairs were obtained. The mean invasively measured haemoglobin-SpHb difference was -0.2 g dL-1 with LoA of -1.1 to 0.6 g dL-1. The mean SaO2-SpO2 difference was 0.86% with LoA of -0.8% to 2.5% and that between CaO2-SpOC was 0.66 mL dL-1 with LoA of -2.59 to 3.91 mL dL-1. CONCLUSIONS Before in vivo adjustment, pulse co-oximeter derived values overestimated the spectrophotometric-based blood gas analyser haemoglobin and CaO2 values. After in vivo adjustment, the accuracy, precision and LoA markedly improved. Therefore, in vivo adjustment is recommended when using this device to monitor SpHb in anaesthetised dogs.

Abstract
Low arterial oxygen is a common complication in anesthetized horses and placing the animal in reverse Trendelenburg (RT) position may treat hypoxemia. The objective of this study was to assess the arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) in horses placed in a 5-degree RT compared to horizontal (H) position. Client-owned healthy horses (n = 60) undergoing elective surgeries were enrolled in a randomized controlled clinical study. Horses were sedated with butorphanol, an α2-adrenoceptor agonist, ± acepromazine and induced with ketamine combined with a benzodiazepine, propofol, or guaifenesin. Anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in oxygen with mechanical ventilation. Each group (RT and H) included 30 horses, 10 in each recumbency (dorsal, right and left lateral). Arterial blood gas analyses (aBG) were performed following arterial catheter placement then hourly. Time first-to-last aBG, changes in PaO2, dynamic compliance (Cdyn), estimated pulmonary shunt fraction (F-shunt), and alveolar dead space to tidal volume ratio (VD/VT) were evaluated with a 2-way analysis of variance. Statistical significance was set at p < .05. Overall, PaO2 increased in all groups; however no significant difference was found between recumbencies (dorsal, right and left lateral) and RT versus H in changes over time for PaO2 (p = .064 and p = .070, respectively), Cdyn (p = .721 and p = .672, respectively), F-shunt (p = .055 and p = .054, respectively), or VD/VT (p = .616 and p = .064, respectively). In healthy anesthetized horses, 5-degree RT did not affect changes in PaO2 as compared to H position.

Abstract
Neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) is a major problem to calf health worldwide, in terms of both morbidity and mortality. A five-point ordinal scale clinical assessment scoring (CAS) chart was utilized to assess calves suffering from NCD-related clinical abnormalities (acidosis and dehydration) on commercial farms. The objective of this research was to determine the predictive capability of this CAS chart against gold standard blood gas parameters, designed to assist farmers in the accurate assessment of the clinical consequences of NCD. A total of 443 diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves were enrolled in the study. The CAS chart rated a calf’s health from no clinical signs to varying degrees of clinical severity on a 0 (clinically normal) to 4 (grave) scale, based on clinical indicators including calf demeanour, ear position, mobility, suckle reflex, desire-to-feed, and enophthalmos. Blood gas analysis was conducted for individual calves, consisting of pH, base excess, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cl−, glucose, total hemoglobin, bicarbonate, anion gap, and strong ion difference. Statistical evaluation was performed by comparison of the CAS score with blood gas profiles using ordinal logistic regression and a non-parametric estimation of the Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC). The ROC analysis indicated that the CAS chart had acceptable specificity (>95%) with low sensitivity (<60%) in differentiating clinically normal from acidotic/dehydrated cases. Assessment of individual severity classes indicated that the chart can predict and differentiate both clinically normal and advanced cases from the other severity classes (peak estimations >80%) but had reduced accuracy in differentiating mild and moderate cases (peak estimations >50%). The chart, as presented, provides a simple tool to differentiate clinically normal from calves suffering the consequences of diarrhea, but fails to accurately differentiate severity for NCD related acidosis and dehydration. Further efforts are required to enhance the sensitivity and differential diagnostic value of this type of chart.

Canine bronchomalacia (CBM) is a structural airway disease leading to chronic cough and intermittent respiratory distress, primarily affecting elderly dogs of small breeds. Results of blood gas analysis have been reported in dogs with several diseases, but not yet in those with CBM. Eleven dogs with CBM were recruited in this study. Most dogs presented with mild hypoxemia and normocapnia, and all with increased alveolar-arterial difference for O2 (A-aDO2). In computed tomography, abnormal lung patterns, such as atelectasis and parenchymal band, were detected in all dogs, consistent with the regions affected by CBM. We conclude that CBM causes abnormal lung patterns and results in impaired oxygenation. Blood gas analysis is a useful tool for detecting mild pulmonary lesions and concurrent CBM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the ability of arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation measurement via pulse oximetry (SpO2 ) to serve as a surrogate for PaO2 in dogs. DESIGN Two-part study: prospective observational and retrospective components. SETTING University teaching hospital. ANIMALS Ninety-two dogs breathing room air prospectively enrolled on a convenience basis. Retrospective evaluation of 1,033 paired SpO2 and PaO2 measurements from 62 dogs on mechanical ventilation. INTERVENTIONS Dogs with concurrent SpO2 and PaO2 measured on room air had a data sheet completed with blood gas analysis. SpO2 , PaO2 , and FiO2 values were collected from medical records of dogs on mechanical ventilation. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Predicted PaO2 was calculated from SpO2 using the dog oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve. The correlation coefficient between measured and predicted PaO2 was 0.49 (P < 0.0001) in room air dogs and 0.74 (P < 0.0001) in ventilated dogs. In room air dogs, Bland-Altman analysis between measured minus predicted PaO2 versus the average showed a mean bias of -6.0 mm Hg (95% limit of agreement, -35 to 23 mm Hg). The correlation coefficient between PaO2 /FiO2 and SpO2 /FiO2 ratios was 0.76 (P < 0.0001). After combining data sets, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed the optimal cutoff value for detecting hypoxemia (PaO2 < 80 mm Hg) was an SpO2 of 95%, with sensitivity and specificity of 77.8% and 89.5%, respectively. Using this cutoff, 6.9% of SpO2 readings failed to detect hypoxemia, whereas 7.2% predicted hypoxemia that was not present. CONCLUSIONS The SpO2 was not clinically suitable as a surrogate for PaO2 , though it performed better in mechanically ventilated dogs. As sensitivity for the detection of hypoxemia was poor, pulse oximetry does not appear to be an acceptable screening test. The SpO2 /FiO2 ratio may have value for evaluation of anesthetized dogs on supplemental oxygen. Arterial blood gas analysis remains ideal for assessment of oxygenation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the impact of mechanical ventilation (MV) and perfusion conditions on the efficacy of pulse-delivered inhaled nitric oxide (PiNO) in anesthetized horses. ANIMALS 27 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURES Anesthetized horses were allocated into 4 groups: spontaneous breathing (SB) with low (< 70 mm Hg) mean arterial blood pressure (MAP; group SB-L; n = 7), SB with physiologically normal (≥ 70 mm Hg) MAP (group SB-N; 8), MV with low MAP (group MV-L; 6), and MV with physiologically normal MAP (group MV-N; 6). Dobutamine was used to maintain MAP > 70 mm Hg. Data were collected after a 60-minute equilibration period and at 15 and 30 minutes during PiNO administration. Variables included Pao2, arterial oxygen saturation and content, oxygen delivery, and physiologic dead space-to-tidal volume ratio. Data were analyzed with Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney U, and Friedman ANOVA tests. RESULTS Pao2, arterial oxygen saturation, arterial oxygen content, and oxygen delivery increased significantly with PiNO in the SB-L, SB-N, and MV-N groups; were significantly lower in group MV-L than in group MV-N; and were lower in MV-N than in both SB groups during PiNO. Physiologic dead space-to-tidal volume ratio was highest in the MV-L group. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Pulmonary perfusion impacted PiNO efficacy during MV but not during SB. Use of PiNO failed to increase oxygenation in the MV-L group, likely because of profound ventilation-perfusion mismatching. During SB, PiNO improved oxygenation irrespective of the magnitude of blood flow, but hypoventilation and hypercarbia persisted. Use of PiNO was most effective in horses with adequate perfusion.

Abstract
Evaluating acid-base status is important for monitoring dairy herd health. In a field study, we aimed to compare the acid-base status measured by net acid-base excretion (NABE) in urine with results of venous blood analysis in clinically healthy, but possibly metabolically burdened cows in their transition period. For this, we sampled blood from the jugular vein and urine from 145 German Holstein cows within 1 to 76 days post-partum. In blood, the metabolic parameters non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), as well as numerous parameters of the acid-base status were measured. The traditional approach, based on bicarbonate concentration, base excess (BE) and anion gap (AG), was compared to the strong ion approach variables, e.g. acid total (Atot), measured strong ion difference (SIDm), strong ion gap (SIG), and unmeasured anions (XA), respectively. Results of both approaches were set against the outcome of urine analysis, i.e. the NABE, base-acid ratio and pH of urine, in a cluster analysis, which provided 7 moderately stable clusters. Evaluating and interpreting these 7 clusters offered novel insights into the pathophysiology of the acid-base equilibrium in fresh post-partum dairy cows. Especially in case of subclinical acid-base disorders, the parameters of the strong ion difference theory, particularly SIDm, Atot and SIG or XA, provided more in-depth information about acid-base status than the traditional parameters BE, bicarbonate or AG in blood. The acid-base status of fresh cows with protein aberrations in blood could be differentiated in a much better way using the strong ion approach than by traditional blood gas analysis or by the measurement of urinary excretion. Therefore, the strong ion approach seems to be a suitable supplement for monitoring acid-base balance in dairy cattle.

Abstract
This study investigated the influence of changing recumbency and mode of ventilation over repeated anesthesias on the alveolar to arterial oxygen tension gradient (PA-aO2) and laboratory analytes in eight horses during a year-long imaging study. Anesthesia was induced with xylazine, diazepam or guaifenesin, and ketamine and maintained with isoflurane. Horses were positioned in right or left lateral recumbency for computed tomography. Ventilation was controlled during 47% of the anesthetics. Blood was sampled from an arterial catheter prior to (30 ± 5 min from connection to anesthetic circuit), within 5 min of changing lateral recumbency, and prior to circuit disconnection (24 ± 6 min after second sample) for measurement of pH, partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2) and partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide, blood glucose and electrolytes. PA-aO2 was calculated. Data from five anesthetic episodes for each horse were summarized as mean ± standard error and analyzed using a mixed-model ANOVA. t tests were used for pairwise comparisons (P<0.05). PaO2 decreased after turning (198 vs. 347 mmHg), then increased to 291 mmHg prior to disconnection. Correspondingly, PA-aO2 was wider (252 vs.120 mmHg), and improved before disconnection (190 mmHg). Body temperature, ionized-Ca2+ and blood glucose were lower, and Na+ was higher at the last time point. In conclusion, turning anesthetized horses decreases PaO2 and results in a widening PA-aO2 suggesting a cautious approach in animals with pre-existing hypoxemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the agreement between point-of-care and laboratory analysers in measuring biochemical and blood gas analytes in venous samples from tortoises and to define preliminary reference intervals for venous blood gas analysis in Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni). MATERIALS AND METHODS Jugular venous blood samples from 47 Hermann's tortoises underwent paired analysis with a portable gas analyser (i-STAT 1, Abaxis), a portable chemical analyser (VetScan VS2, Abaxis), and with the respective reference analysers. Agarose gel electrophoresis was used to determine albumin concentrations on 12 specimens. Agreement was evaluated with Bland-Altman plots and regression analysis using the Passing-Bablok method. RESULTS Point-of-care analysers had variable agreement with the reference analysers, presenting constant or proportional bias depending on the analyte. Relevant analytes in reptiles, such as ionised and total calcium, had acceptable agreement. The method for determining albumin concentration currently available in both point-of-care and laboratory analysers significantly overestimated albumin concentrations as compared to protein electrophoresis. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE While the use of POC analysers is extremely advantageous in small animal primary care facilities, agreement between point-of-care and laboratory analysers varies depending on the analyte. For certain analytes, interchangeability of results is limited and specific reference intervals for point-of-care analysers are required. Veterinarians should be aware of the size and the direction of the bias of each analyte.

Abstract
A group of injured yellow-bellied sliders (Trachemys scripta) and river cooters (Pseudemys concinna) were evaluated for a variety of health values at presentation to the NC State Turtle Rescue Team and prior to release. An i-STAT Portable Clinical Analyzer and CG8+ cartridges were used to determine venous blood gas and biochemical values, the packed cell volume (PCV) and total protein were evaluated using hematocrit tubes and high speed centrifugation, and a differential WBC percentage was determined manually with Diff-Quick stained blood smear slides. Forty-six turtles were sampled on presentation and twenty-three of those were sampled again prior to release. Blood values were analyzed for significant differences between samples collected at presentation and prior to release, as well as differences between surviving and non-surviving turtles. Five variables were identified as significantly different between presenting and recuperated samples: pH, pCO2, Glu, % heterophils, and % eosinophils. When comparing samples between turtles that survived versus those that did not, two variables were identified as being significant prognostic indicators; lactate and PCV. Identification of these significant variables can aid in determining patient prognosis and triage therapy for injured aquatic turtles.

Abstract
To determine the effect of capture and restraint on hematologic, plasma biochemical, and venous blood gas values in Dalmatian pelicans ( Pelecanus crispus), blood samples were collected and temperature and heart rate were recorded in 13 pelicans (5 males and 8 females) immediately after capture from a large field exhibit. Repeat sampling was performed after transport, a mean of 74 minutes after initial evaluation. When compared with values at initial sampling to the time of capture, significant increases were documented in the heterophil : lymphocyte ratio (H : L), carbon dioxide (CO2), bicarbonate (HCO3), total carbon dioxide (Tco2), base excess (BE), and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Pco2) values after 74 minutes. Significant decreases were documented in total protein, lactate, and phosphorus concentrations, percentage of oxygen saturation (So2), partial pressure of oxygen (Po2), total white blood cell count (WBC), absolute lymphocytes, absolute eosinophils, and absolute monocytes after 74 minutes. Those changes suggest capture and restraint can alter hematologic, plasma biochemical, and acid-base status in Dalmatian pelicans, which may influence clinical decision making and case management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effect of blood collection by a push-pull technique from an indwelling IV catheter versus direct venipuncture on venous blood gas values before and after administration of alfaxalone or propofol to dogs. DESIGN Prospective randomized clinical study. ANIMALS 30 healthy client-owned dogs that weighed ≥ 10 kg (22 lb) and were anesthetized for elective surgical procedures. PROCEDURES All dogs were premedicated with methadone (0.5 mg/kg [0.2 mg/lb], IM), and 20 to 30 minutes later, anesthesia was induced with either alfaxalone (1 to 3 mg/kg [0.5 to 1.4 mg/lb], IV to effect; n = 15) or propofol (2 to 6 mg/kg [0.9 to 2.7 mg/lb], IV to effect; 15). Immediately prior to premedication and after anesthesia induction, paired blood samples were collected from the cephalic veins; 1 by direct venipuncture and 1 by use of a push-pull technique from a 20-gauge catheter. All blood samples underwent venous blood gas analysis immediately after collection. Results were compared between sample collection techniques before and after anesthesia induction and between anesthesia induction protocols. RESULTS All results were within established reference ranges. For many variables, statistically significant but clinically irrelevant differences were detected between samples collected by direct venipuncture and those collected by the push-pull technique but not between the 2 anesthesia induction protocols. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results indicated the push-pull technique was an acceptable method for collection of blood samples from dogs for venous blood gas analysis that could be used instead of direct venipuncture for patients with patent IV catheters.

Abstract
The aim of this case series was to describe the differences between maternal and fetal blood-gas results during anesthesia. Sixteen singleton adult merino ewes weighing 60.1 ± 5.1 kg at 125.7 d (124 to 126 d) gestation were anesthetized. Maternal (radial) and fetal (umbilical) arterial blood gas samples were collected 79 ± 6 min after the start of anesthesia if maternal mean arterial pressure (MAP) was stable and > 65 mmHg. Fetal pH, partial arterial pressure of oxygen (PaO2), glucose, arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SaO2), sodium, and chloride were significantly lower and fetal partial arterial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2), lactate, hematocrit, total hemoglobin, potassium, and calcium were significantly higher than maternal blood-gas values. Fetal pH, PaO2, and BE were lower and fetal lactate was higher than fetal umbilical arterial samples previously reported, which may indicate a non-reassuring fetal status. Further refinement of the ovine experimental model is warranted with fetal monitoring during maternal anesthesia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of postinduction butorphanol administration in etorphine-immobilized white rhinoceros on respiration and blood gases. STUDY DESIGN Randomized crossover study. ANIMALS A group of six sub-adult male white rhinoceros. METHODS Etorphine, or etorphine followed by butorphanol 12 minutes after recumbency, was administered intramuscularly [2.5 mg etorphine, 25 mg butorphanol (1000-1250 kg), or 3.0 mg etorphine, 30 mg butorphanol (1250-1500 kg)]. Sampling started at 10 minutes after initial recumbency, and was repeated at 5 minute intervals for 25 minutes. Arterial blood gases, limb muscle tremors, expired minute ventilation and respiratory frequency were measured at each sampling point. Calculated values included alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient [ [Formula: see text] ], expected respiratory minute volume (V˙e), tidal volume (Vt), oxygen consumption ( [Formula: see text] ) and carbon dioxide production ( [Formula: see text] ). RESULTS Etorphine administration resulted in an initial median (range) hypoxaemia [arterial partial pressure of oxygen 25.0 (23.0-28.0) mmHg], hypercapnia [arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide 76.2 (67.2-81.2) mmHg], increased [Formula: see text] [41.7 (36.6-45.1) mmHg, [Formula: see text] [11.1 (10.0-12.0) L minute-1] and muscle tremors. Butorphanol administration was followed by rapid, although moderate, improvements in arterial partial pressure of oxygen [48.5 (42.0-51.0) mmHg] and arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide [62.8 (57.9-75.2) mmHg]. In rhinoceros administered butorphanol, [Formula: see text] [4.4 (3.6-5.1) L minute-1] and [Formula: see text] [4.2 (3.8-4.4) L minute-1] were lower than in those not administered butorphanol. Increased arterial oxygen tension was associated with lower oxygen consumption (p=0.002) which was positively associated with lower muscle tremor scores (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Hypoxaemia and hypercapnia in etorphine-immobilized rhinoceros resulted from an increased [ [Formula: see text] ] and increased [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] associated with muscle tremors. Rather than being associated with changes in V˙e, it appears that improved blood gases following butorphanol administration were a consequence of decreased [Formula: see text] associated with reduced muscle tremoring.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether racehorses undergoing regular exercise at 2 intensities or stall rest during a period of reduced training (detraining) would differentially maintain their cardiopulmonary and oxygen-transport capacities. ANIMALS 27 Thoroughbreds. PROCEDURES Horses trained on a treadmill for 18 weeks underwent a period of detraining for 12 weeks according to 1 of 3 protocols: cantering at 70% of maximal rate of oxygen consumption ([Formula: see text]o2max) for 3 min/d for 5 d/wk (canter group); walking for 1 h/d for 5 d/wk (walk group); or stall rest (stall group). Standardized treadmill exercise protocols (during which cardiopulmonary and oxygen-transport variables were measured) were performed before and after detraining. RESULTS Mass-specific [Formula: see text]o2max, maximal cardiac output, and maximal cardiac stroke volume of all groups decreased after 12 weeks of detraining with no differences among groups. After detraining, arterial-mixed-venous oxygen concentration difference did not decrease in any group, and maximal heart rate decreased in the walk and stall groups. Run time to exhaustion and speeds eliciting [Formula: see text]o2max and maximal heart rate and at which plasma lactate concentration reached 4mM did not change in the canter group but decreased in the walk and stall groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Horses following the cantering detraining protocol maintained higher values of several performance variables compared with horses following the walking or stall rest protocols. These results suggested that it may be possible to identify a minimal threshold exercise intensity or protocol during detraining that would promote maintenance of important performance-related variables and minimize reductions in oxygen-transport capacity in horses.

Abstract
Rabbits have the ability to hide their signs and often present in a state of decompensatory shock. Handling can increase susceptibility to stress-induced cardiomyopathy and specific hemodynamic changes. Careful monitoring with a specific reference range is important to detect early decompensation, change the therapeutic plan in a timely manner, and assess prognostic indicators. Fluid requirements are higher in rabbits than in other small domestic mammals and can be corrected both enterally and parenterally. Critical care in rabbits can be extrapolated to many hindgut fermenters, but a specific reference range and dosage regimen need to be determined.

Abstract
An evaluation of blood chemistry profile in relation to specific stages of livestock cycle can help better understand variations in physiological conditions in order to adjust management systems to animal needs. In addition to basal hematological investigation, the acid-base balance and blood gases are essential tools in evaluating metabolism in calves. The relationship between blood gas parameters, diet and growth should be further investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in acid-base status, blood gases, serum chemistry and hematological parameters in veal calves at different periods of livestock cycle. One hundred twenty-eight healthy cross breeding calves were enrolled in a farm in North-East Italy. Blood samplings were carried out from the jugular vein on day 1 (t1), 60 (t2) and 150 (t3) after arrival. Blood gas analysis was performed and hematological parameters were evaluated. One-way ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer post-hoc test were performed to assess differences between blood parameter values at the different periods. The main differences in blood gas parameter levels during the livestock cycle concerned pH, Base Excess and HCO3 with higher values recorded in t3. Urea, creatinine, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and bilirubin mean values were significantly higher in t1 than in t2 and t3. Aspartate aminotransferase increased from t1 to t2 and t3. Alkaline Phosphatase was higher in t2. Fe levels severely dropped in t2 and in t3, and the decrease led to a restrained but significant reduction in haemoglobin values. A correspondent decrease in the other haemocytometric parameters was found.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the mRNA expression of T helper (Th)1, Th2, and Th17 cell-associated inflammatory mediators in cells of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples collected from healthy horses exposed to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and to monitor blood oxygen concentration during and following HBO therapy. ANIMALS 8 healthy horses. PROCEDURES In a randomized controlled crossover design study, each horse was exposed (beginning day 1) to 100% oxygen at a maximum of 3 atmospheres absolute (304 kPa) daily for 10 days or ambient air at atmospheric pressure in the HBO chamber for an equivalent amount of time (control). Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples were collected on days 0 and 10. After validation of candidate reference genes, relative mRNA expressions of various innate inflammatory, Th1 cell-derived, Th2 cell-derived (including eotaxin-2), Th17 cell-derived, and regulatory cytokines were measured by quantitative PCR assays. For 3 horses, arterial blood samples were collected for blood gas analysis during a separate HBO session. RESULTS The optimal combination of reference genes was glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, hypoxanthine ribosyltransferase, and ribosomal protein L32. Compared with day 0 findings, expression of eotaxin-2 mRNA was significantly lower (0.12-fold reduction) and the percentage of neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples was significantly lower on day 10 when horses received HBO therapy. Values of Pao2 rapidly increased (> 800 mm Hg) but immediately decreased to pretreatment values when HBO sessions ended. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results indicated that HBO therapy does not increase mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines, but reduces eotaxin-2 mRNA transcription. The Pao2 increase was transient with no cumulative effects of HBO.

Abstract
Studies on lung injury and its treatment options are often performed on small animals like rats. Because conventional blood gas analyses may not detect rapid changes in gas exchange during respiratory distress syndrome and intermittent blood withdrawal can result in hypo-volaemia and anaemia, we tested the applicability and accuracy of a continuous intravascular blood gas monitor (Paratrend 7+). Anaesthetized and ventilated rats with a body weight of 398 ±45 g ( n =22) had a 20-gauge cannula inserted in both carotid arteries. A photochemical blood gas sensor for continuous measurement (Paratrend 7+) was advanced into the aorta via the left carotid artery. Blood was sampled for intermittent blood gas analysis by means of the right carotid artery. Arterial pO2 was varied by applying different inspiratory oxygen concentrations, and arterial pCO2 by applying different respiratory rates. Paired blood gas measurements ( n =136) were analysed over a wide range of pO2 values (5.3-76.8 kPa). We found an acceptable correlation for pO2 ( r2=0.98), pCO2 ( r2=0.96) and pH ( r2=0.92). The calculated bias and imprecision for pO2 was -1.0 ± 3.3 kPa, for pCO2 0.04 ± 0.28 kPa and for hydrogen ion concentration -0.05 ±2.2 nmol/l. We conclude that in rats, continuous blood gas monitoring with a photochemical blood gas sensor provides pO2, pCO2 and pH measurements with acceptable accuracy.

Abstract
This study describes the implantation of transit-time flow probes on the ascending aorta of rats while minimizing the risk of postoperative complications. Special emphasis is placed on our new method of rat intubation as well as the production of materials necessary for the implantation procedure such as endotracheal tubes and heparin bonded vessel catheters. The effects of these devices on the response to acute hypoxia were studied in rats following a 5–7 day recovery from the implantation procedure. Systemic and microvascular measurements were made on instrumented rats ( n = 5) and non-instrumented controls ( n = 3) that were ventilated with 21%, 15%, 10%, 8% and 5% oxygen. Arterial pressure, PO2, lactate, and base deficit were not different between the implanted and control animals at any inspired oxygen concentration. Microvascular flow in the primary arterioles of the spinotrapezius muscle was also similar between the two groups at all inspired oxygen concentrations. We conclude that this novel methodology facilitates the measurement of whole body oxygen delivery in resting and haemodynamically-stressed rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe changes in venous blood gas analytes during isoflurane anesthesia in black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). DESIGN Prospective study. ANIMALS 16 black-tailed prairie dogs. PROCEDURES Black-tailed prairie dogs were placed in an anesthesia chamber for induction of general anesthesia, which was maintained with isoflurane in oxygen delivered via mask. Immediately following anesthetic induction, a venous blood sample was obtained from the medial saphenous vein; a second venous blood sample was obtained just prior to anesthetic gas shutoff. An evaluation of venous blood gas analytes was performed on each sample. General linear mixed models with repeated measures were used for data analyses. RESULTS Median anesthetic time was 90 minutes (range, 60 to 111 minutes). A significant increase from immediately after induction to completion of anesthesia was observed in Pco2 and mean blood chloride ion, BUN, and creatinine concentrations. A decrease in Po2, mean blood pH, and anion gap was observed from induction of anesthesia to completion. No significant differences during anesthesia were observed in mean base excess or blood bicarbonate, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, blood glucose, lactate, and total CO2 concentrations. No complications occurred during or after anesthesia for any animal. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Examination of prairie dogs often requires general anesthesia, with isoflurane currently the inhalation agent of choice. Results suggested respiratory acidosis and relative azotemia may occur during isoflurane anesthesia of prairie dogs. Given the increased risk associated with anesthesia in small mammals and the propensity for respiratory disease in prairie dogs, insight into physiologic changes associated with isoflurane anesthesia in healthy prairie dogs can aid in perioperative evaluation and anesthetic monitoring in this rodent species.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of desflurane and evaluate the effects of 2 opioids on MAC in sheep. ANIMALS 8 adult nulliparous mixed-breed sheep. PROCEDURES A randomized crossover design was used. Each sheep was evaluated individually on 2 occasions (to allow assessment of the effects of each of 2 opioids), separated by a minimum of 10 days. On each occasion, sheep were anesthetized with desflurane in 100% oxygen, MAC of desflurane was determined, oxymorphone (0.05 mg/kg) or hydromorphone (0.10 mg/kg) was administered IV, and MAC was redetermined. Physiologic variables and arterial blood gas and electrolyte concentrations were measured at baseline (before MAC determination, with end-tidal desflurane concentration maintained at 10%) and each time MAC was determined. Timing of various stages of anesthesia was recorded for both occasions. RESULTS Mean ± SEM MAC of desflurane was 8.6 ± 0.2%. Oxymorphone or hydromorphone administration resulted in significantly lower MAC (7.6 ± 0.4% and 7.9 ± 0.2%, respectively). Cardiac output at MAC determination for desflurane alone and for desflurane with opioid administration was higher than that at baseline. No difference was identified among hematologic values at any point. Effects of oxymorphone and hydromorphone on durations of various stages of anesthesia did not differ significantly. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE MAC of desflurane in nulliparous adult sheep was established. Intravenous administration of oxymorphone or hydromorphone led to a decrease in MAC; however, the clinical importance of that decrease was minor relative to the effect in other species.

Abstract
Blood gas analysis is useful to obtain information about acid-base state and gas exchange of the lung. Interpretation is based on the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. This approach has its limitations especially in interpretation of complex disturbances of acid-base status and has been complemented by base excess and anion gap. Peter Stewart described a model of quantitative approach to the acid-base disturbances which has been further developed and is known as the strong ion approach. This model differs from the traditional approach in the assessment of metabolic disorders of acid base status. Both models complement each other but also have their advantages and disadvantages. For simple disorders of the acid-base state the Henderson-Hasselbalch approach can be used, however in complex disturbances of acid-base balance, especially with abnormalities of serum albumin and phosphate concentrations, the strong ion approach is recommended. With the understanding of both models and of the clinical presentation of blood gas abnormalities, optimal case management and therapy can be provided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe and compare the effects of two kinds of lung recruitment maneuvers, namely sustained inflation (SI) and incremental positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) (IP) on oxygenation, respiratory mechanics, and hemodynamics of dogs with severe smoke inhalation injury. METHODS After being treated with conventional mechanical ventilation, 12 dogs were inflicted with severe smoke inhalation injury. They were divided into group SI and group IP according to the random number table, with 6 dogs in each group. Dogs in group SI were subjected to continuous positive airway pressure ventilation, with inspiratory pressure of 25 cmH2O (1 cmH2o = 0. 098 kPa), and it was sustained for 20 s. PEEP level in group IP was gradually increased by 5 cmH2O every 5 min up to 25 cmH2O, and then it was decreased by 5 cmH2O every 5 min until reaching 2-3 cmH2O. Then the previous ventilation mode was resumed in both groups for 8 hours. Blood gas analysis (pH value, PaO2, and PaCO2), oxygenation index (OI), respiratory mechanics parameters [peak inspiratory pressure (PIP), mean airway pressure, and dynamic lung compliance], and hemodynamic parameters [heart rate, mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP), and cardiac output (CO)] were recorded or calculated before injury, immediately after injury, and at post ventilation hour (PVH) 2, 4, 6, 8. Data were processed with analysis of variance of repeated measurement and LSD-t test. RESULTS (1) At PVH 6 and 8, pH values of dogs in group SI were significantly lower than those in group IP (with t values respectively 2. 431 and 2. 261, P values below 0.05); PaO2 levels in group SI [(87 ± 24), (78 ± 14) mmHg, 1 mmHg =0. 133 kPa] were lower than those in group IP [ (114 ± 18) , (111 ± 17) mmHg, with t values respectively 2. 249 and 3.671, P <0.05 or P <0.01]; OI values in group SI were significantly higher than those in group IP (with t values respectively 2.363 and 5.010, P <0.05 or P <0.01). No significant differences were observed in PaCO2 level within each group or between the two groups (with t values from 0. 119 to 1. 042, P values above 0.05). Compared with those observed immediately after injury, the pH values were significantly lowered (except for dogs in group IP at PVH 6 and 8, with t values from 2.292 to 3.222, P <0.05 or P <0.01), PaO2 levels were significantly elevated (with t values from 4. 443 to 6.315, P <0.05 or P <0.01), and OI values were significantly lowered (with t values from 2.773 to 9.789, P <0.05 orP <0.01) in both groups at all the treatment time points. (2) The PIP level at each time point showed no significant differences between two groups (with t values from 0. 399 to 1. 167, P values above 0. 05). At PVH 4 and 8, the mean airway .pressure values of dogs in group SI were significantly higher than those in group IP (with t values respectively 1.926 and 1. 190, P values below 0.05). At PVH 4, 6, and 8, the dynamic lung compliance levels of dogs in group SI [(9.5 ± 1.9), (12.8 ± 2. 1), (13. 1 ± 1.8) mL/cmH2O] were significantly lower than those in group IP [(11.6 ± 1.2), (15.4 ± 1.8), (14.9 ± 0.8) mL/cmH2O], with t values respectively 2. 289, 2. 303, 2. 238, P values below 0.05. Compared with those observed immediately after injury, PIP and the mean airway pressure values of dogs in two groups were significantly lowered at each treatment time point (with t values from 2. 271 to 7. 436, P <0. 05 or P < 0.01); the dynamic lung compliance levels were significantly elevated in both groups at PVH 6 and 8 (with t values from 2. 207 to 4. 195, P < 0.05 or P <0.01). (3) Heart rate, MAP, and PAP levels at each time point between two groups showed no significant differences (with t values from 0. 001 to 1. 170, P values above 0. 05). At PVH 4, 6, and 8, CO levels in group IP [(0. 6 + 0. 3), (0. 6 + 0. 4), (0. 5 + 0. 7) L/min] were significantly lower than those in group SI [(1.5 0.7), (1.8 + 1.1), (1.6 +0.9) L/min], with t values respectively 3. 028, 2.511, 2.363, P values below 0.05. Compared with that observed immediately after injury, CO level in group IP was significantly lowered at PVH 4, 6, or 8 (with t values respectively 2. 363, 2. 302, 2. 254, P values below 0. 05). CONCLUSIONS Both lung recruitment maneuvers can effectively improve oxygenation and lung compliance of dogs with severe smoke inhalation injury. IP is more effective in improving lung compliance, while SI shows less impact on the hemodynamic parameters.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare recovery from desflurane anesthesia in horses with or without post-anesthetic xylazine. Six adult horses were anesthetized on 2 occasions, 14 d apart using a prospective, randomized crossover design. Horses were sedated with xylazine, induced to lateral recumbency with ketamine and diazepam, and anesthesia was maintained with desflurane. One of 2 treatments was administered intravenously at the end of anesthesia: xylazine [0.2 mg/kg body weight (BW)] or an equivalent volume of saline. Recovery parameters were recorded and assessed by 2 blinded observers. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze recovery data. Heart rate, arterial blood pressures, and arterial blood gas data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures. Values of P < 0.05 were considered significant. Duration of anesthesia was not different between groups. Administration of xylazine at the end of desflurane anesthesia was associated with significantly longer times to first movement, endotracheal tube removal, first attempt to achieve sternal recumbency, sternal recumbency, first attempt to stand, and standing. Number of attempts to stand and quality of recovery scores were not different between groups. Administering xylazine after desflurane anesthesia resulted in longer recovery times. Recovery scores were not significantly different between groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Facing numerous challenges, such as illness, storms or human disturbance, some harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) pups lose contact to their dams and are found abandoned along the North Sea coast. In Schleswig-Holstein, pups with the prospect of surviving rehabilitation are admitted to the Seal Center Friedrichskoog. Despite elaborate clinical health assessments on admission, including differential hematology, in 2010, 17% of 108 admitted pups did not survive the first 20 days. The death rate during the years 2006 and 2009 varied between 9 and 19%. To broaden the spectrum of variables which could be predictive for survival, blood gas and serum analyses were performed for 99 pups using venous blood. Variables included total CO2, pH, partial CO2, HCO3-, base excess and anion gap as well as glucose, urea nitrogen, sodium, potassium and chloride. Moreover, total serum protein and fat (triglyceride) concentrations were measured for all pups on admission. RESULTS Repeated measurements of 12 randomly selected individuals revealed a significant (p = 0.002) positive influence of time in rehabilitation on triglyceride concentrations. This trend probably shows the improvement of the pups' nutritional status as a consequence of the shift from milk replacer formula to fish. No such positive influence was detected for total protein concentrations though. Hematologic values, including blood gases, were not predictive for survival. CONCLUSIONS For the first time blood gas values are reported in this study for a large sample size (N = 99) of seal pups (regardless of their health status). The ranges and medians calculated from the data can serve as a stepping stone towards the establishment of reference values for neonate harbor seals. However, future investigations on the development of blood gases in harbor seals with different health conditions and ages over time are necessary to allow for a better understanding of acid-base regulation in harbor seals.

Abstract
This article outlines a practical approach for the use of blood-gas analysis in pet rabbits using the I-STAT analyzer. Sampling techniques and a theoretic approach to diagnosis are described. The following 95% RI were obtained from venous samples of 45 healthy rabbits: pH (7.245-7.533), PCO(2) (28.9-52.9 mm Hg), HCO(3) (17.0-32.5 mmol/L), total CO(2) (18-34 mmol/L), BE(ecf) (-10-8 mmol/L), AnGap (11-26 mmol/L), Na (136-147 mmol/L), K (3.4-5.7 mmol/L), Cl (93-113 mmol/L), Glu (93-245 mg/dL), BUN (9-33 mg/dL). Results from 20 arterial samples were pH (7.358-7.502), PCO(2) (29.1-36.8 mm Hg), HCO(3) (17.5-27.6 mmol/L), BE(ecf) (-7-5 mmol/L), PO(2) (75-101 mm Hg), iCa (1.67-1.85). The article also includes some conclusions obtained comparing results from healthy and ill rabbits over an 18-month period.

Abstract
Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a worldwide occurring sporadic disease of cloven-hoofed animals. For the first time, this case report describes clinical and pathological as well as histopathological findings in an alpaca suffering from MCF caused by ovine herpesvirus 2. Clinical symptoms comprised apathy, dehydration, anorexia, and emaciation. These symptoms were unspecific and did not correspond to any known course of MCF in cattle. However, the findings of the pathological and histopathological examination showed broad analogies to the main findings in other ruminants infected with MCF. In this alpaca, infection with ovine herpesvirus 2 was confirmed by postmortal PCR of tissue samples of lung, trachea, oesophagus, larynx and tonsils as well as conjunctival swabs.

Abstract
This case series is the first report of the use of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) ventilation in adult horses. Two horses and 3 ponies anesthetized for orthopedic procedures in lateral recumbency received 10 cm H(2)O CPAP. During anesthesia, arterial oxygen partial pressure tended to increase and arterial carbon dioxide pressure tended to increase despite increased minute ventilation index. The measured cardiovascular parameters were within physiologic limits.

Abstract
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was diagnosed in 2 dogs with acute dyspnea. Short-term positive pressure ventilation and intense critical and nursing care were provided. Both dogs improved and were discharged. Few reports describe successful recovery from ARDS. Due to advances in positive pressure ventilation and improvement in the supportive care of critically ill veterinary patients, the prognosis for ARDS may improve.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the use of surface area derived tidal volume in anesthetized ventilated dogs (n = 71, random assignment) compared to settings by experienced personnel. There was no significant difference (P = 0.1030) between methods (p(a)CO(2) of 43.1 ± 7 mmHg and 39.8 ± 7 mmHg, respectively). Surface area derived tidal volume can achieve satisfactory ventilation.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Objective of this clinical study was to assess the anaesthetic quality (induction and recovery) and utility of short term alfaxalone anaesthesia in healthy and diseased cats. Cardiopulmonary effects and the influence on haematological and biochemical blood parameters were evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty feline patients (ASA1-4) were anaesthetized with alfaxalone for various short surgical or diagnostic procedures. Heart rate, breathing rate, end-tidal CO2 partial pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, mean arterial blood pressure and the body temperature were measured and recorded every 10 minutes. Before, after and 6 hours after anaesthesia venous blood samples were taken and haematologic and blood chemistry parameters were determined. Recovery time and quality were assessed by a numerical rating scale. RESULTS Anaesthetic induction was rapid and smooth in all cats. Spontaneous respiration was maintained in all cats. Cardiopulmonary parameters mostly remained within a clinically tolerable range. Noticeable was a high heart rate (mean >190 bpm) at the beginning of anaesthesia lasting up to 10 minutes. Statistically significant changes (p<0.05) occurred in some haematologic parameters (RBC, haemoglobin, haematocrit and MCV decreased), electrolytes and venous acid-base-status (bicarbonate, chloride and base excess increased, sodium and potassium decreased) and blood chemistry parameters (alanine aminotransferase, glutamate dehydrogenase and creatinine decreased). None of these changes appeared to have clinical relevance. Recovery was smooth in the majority of cats. Mild signs of hyperexcitability (muscle tremor, short term opisthotonus and hyperacusis) occurred in individual animals. The duration of recovery varied between 21 and 93 minutes. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Alfaxalone by repeated intravenous injection is suitable for short-term diagnostic and surgical procedures in cats. Because of its minor cardiovascular effects and slight respiratory depression, it is also well tolerated by patients with increased anaesthetic risk (ASA 3 and 4).

Abstract
Comparison of the effects of xylazine and romifidine administered perioperatively on the recovery of anesthetized horses. The present study was designed to compare recoveries from anesthesia following the use of romifidine or xylazine in horses. In a prospective blind randomized clinical trial, 28 horses, undergoing elective arthroscopy, were randomly allocated into 2 groups. The intravenous anesthesia protocol used in the xylazine group was: butorphanol [0.02 mg/kg body weight (BW)] and xylazine (0.5 to 0.7 mg/kg BW) for premedication, diazepam (0.1 mg/kg BW) and ketamine (2.2 mg/kg BW) for induction, isoflurane in oxygen for maintenance and xylazine (0.1 mg/kg BW) in recovery. The xylazine was replaced with romifidine 0.05 to 0.08 mg/kg BW (premedication) and 0.01 mg/kg BW (recovery) in the romifidine group. The quality of recovery was evaluated with a modified scoring system and the duration recorded. Wilcoxon Ranked Sum test (P < 0.05) was used for statistical analysis. The recovery quality scores and the durations of recovery were not statistically different between the 2 groups. In this study, romifidine and xylazine were equal in their effects on recovery qualities.(Translated by the authors).

Abstract
The cardiopulmonary effects of capnoperitoneum were investigated in 8 spontaneously breathing, young adult female cats undergoing laparoscopic pancreatic biopsy (intra-abdominal pressure 12 mmHg). Cats were premedicated with acepromazine and hydromorphone, induced with ketamine and diazepam, and maintained using an end-tidal isoflurane concentration of 1.13% in 100% oxygen. Direct systemic arterial blood pressure, heart and respiratory rates, end-tidal carbon dioxide (CO(2)), and isoflurane were recorded every 5 min before insufflation (baseline), during insufflation of the abdomen with CO(2), and following desufflation. Arterial blood samples were drawn at baseline, at 10 and 30 min of insufflation, and 5 min after desufflation for blood gases. The significant findings (P < 0.05) were as follows: insufflation produced an increase in heart rate (5 to 15 min and at 30 min), mean arterial blood pressure (25 to 30 min), and diastolic arterial blood pressure (10 to 30 min). After desufflation, respiratory rate increased for 15 min. The changes were within physiologically acceptable limits in these healthy, anesthetized cats despite no artificial maintenance of minute ventilation.
