Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have revealed that remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) may have a neuroprotective function. However, the potential benefit of RIC for patients with ICH remain unclear. OBJECTIVE The primary aim of this study is to assess the safety and efficacy of RIC for patients with ICH. METHODS The Safety and Efficacy of RIC for Spontaneous ICH (SERIC-ICH) is an ongoing prospective, randomized, multicenter, parallel-controlled, and blinded-endpoint clinical trial. The study will enroll an estimated 2000 patients aged ⩾18 years within 24 h after ICH onset, with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale ⩾6 and Glasgow Coma Scale ⩾8 upon presentation. The patients will be randomly assigned to the RIC or control groups (1:1) and will be treated with cuffs inflated to a pressure of 200 or 60 mmHg, respectively, twice daily for 7 days. Each RIC treatment will consist of four cycles of arm ischemia for 5 min, followed by reperfusion for another 5 min, for a total procedure time of 35 min. The primary efficacy outcome measure is the proportion of patients with good functional outcomes (modified Rankin scale 0-2) at 180 days. The safety outcome measures will include all adverse events and severe adverse events occurring in the course of the study. DISCUSSION RIC is an inexpensive intervention and might be a strategy to improve outcomes in patients with ICH. The SERIC-ICH trial will investigate whether RIC treatment can be applied as an adjuvant treatment in the acute phase of ICH and identify safety issues.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the epidemiology and spatial-temporal distribution characteristics of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Shanxi province. Methods: The data of HFMD in Shanxi province from 2009 to 2020 were collected from notifiable disease management information system of Chinese information system for disease control and prevention and analyzed by descriptive epidemiology, Joinpoint regression, spatial autocorrelation analysis and spatio- temporal scanning analysis. Results: A total of 293 477 HFMD cases were reported in Shanxi province from 2009 to 2020, with an average annual incidence of 67.64/100 000 (293 477/433 867 454), severe disease rate of 5.36/100 000 (2 326/433 867 454), severe disease ratio of 0.79%(2 326/293 477), mortality of 0.015/100 000 (66/433 867 454), and fatality rate of 22.49/100 000 (66/293 477). The reported incidence rate, severe disease rate, mortality rate and fatality rate of HFMD showed decreasing trends. The main high-risk groups were scattered children and kindergarten children aged 0-5. The incidence of HFMD had obvious seasonal variation, with two peaks every year: the main peak was during June-July, the secondary peak was during September-October and the peak period is from April to November. A total of 13 942 laboratory cases were confirmed, with a diagnosis rate of 4.75% (13 942/293 477), including 4 438 (35.11%, 4 438/293 477) Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) positive cases, 4 609 (33.06%, 4 609/293 477) Coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) positive cases, and 4 895 (31.83%, 4 895/293 477) other enterovirus positive cases. There was a spatial positive correlation (Moran's I ranged from 0.12 to 0.58, all P<0.05) and the spatial clustering was obvious. High-risk regions were mainly distributed in Taiyuan in central Shanxi province, Linfen and Yuncheng in southern Shanxi province, and Changzhi in southeastern Shanxi province. Spatial-temporal scanning analysis revealed 1 the most likely cluster and 8 secondary likely clusters, of which the most likely cluster (RR=2.65, LLR=22 387.42, P<0.001) located in Taiyuan and Jinzhong city, Shanxi province, including 12 counties (districts), and accumulated from April 1, 2009 to November 30, 2018. Conclusions: There was obvious spatial-temporal clustering of HFMD in Shanxi province, and the epidemic situation was in decline. The key areas were the districts in urban areas and the counties adjacent to it. Meanwhile, the monitoring and classification of other enterovirus types of HFMD should be strengthened.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the clinical features and treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum (PG). Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted. From January 2012 to July 2021, 25 patients with PG who met the inclusion criteria were admitted to Beijing Fucheng Hospital, including 16 males and 9 females, with the age of onset of disease being 14 to 75 years. Among them, the classification of PG identified 17 cases of ulcerative type, 6 cases of pustular type, 1 case of proliferative type, and 1 case of bullous type. Six patients were accompanied with systemic diseases, while 19 patients were not accompanied with systemic diseases. At the same time of systemic treatment with glucocorticoids, dressing changes or surgical skin grafting was performed on the wounds. The results of laboratory and histopathological examinations, the overall curative effects and follow-up of patients, the wound healing time of patients with negative and positive microbial culture results of wound secretion specimens, and the curative effects of patients with and without systemic diseases were analyzed. Results: The results of blood routine examination of 19 patients were abnormal, and all the immunological indexes were normal in all the patients; the microbial culture results of wound secretion specimens were positive in 14 patients; and the histopathological examination results of ulcer boundary tissue in 15 patients with rapid wound progress were mainly local tissue inflammatory changes. The wounds were cured in 17 patients, mostly healed in 7 patients, and not healed in 1 patient. After one-year's follow-up, the PG in 3 patients relapsed due to self-discontinuation of medication after discharge, and the wounds were healed gradually after adjustment of medication, while the remaining patients had no relapse. The days of wound healing in 14 patients with positive microbial culture results of wound secretion specimens were 21-55 days, and the days of wound healing in 11 patients with negative microbial culture results in wound secretion specimens were 20-54 days. In the 6 patients with systemic diseases, the wounds of 3 patients were cured, and the wounds of the other 3 patients were mostly healed. In the 19 patients without systemic diseases, the wounds of 14 patients were cured, the wounds of 4 patients were mostly healed, and the wound of 1 patient was not healed. Conclusions: The laboratory examination and pathological manifestations of patients with PG lacks characteristics, and their clinical manifestations are rich and diverse, thus PG can be easily misdiagnosed. The glucocorticoids combined with immunosuppressive therapy have good effects on PG. Surgical intervention can be performed on the wounds. Specifically, excessive debridement is not recommended in the acute phase, but skin grafting can be performed in the contraction phase.

Abstract
Microglia are intrinsic immune cells of the central nervous system and play a dual role (pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory) in the homeostasis of the nervous system. Neuroinflammation mediated by microglia serves as an important stage of ischemic hypoxic brain injury, cerebral hemorrhage disease, neurodegeneration and neurotumor of the nervous system and is present through the whole course of these diseases. Microglial membrane protein or receptor is the basis of mediating microglia to play the inflammatory role and they have been found to be upregulated by recognizing associated ligands or sensing changes in the nervous system microenvironment. They can then allosterically activate the downstream signal transduction and produce a series of complex cascade reactions that can activate microglia, promote microglia chemotactic migration and stimulate the release of proinflammatory factor such as TNF-α, IL-β to effectively damage the nervous system and cause apoptosis of neurons. In this paper, several representative membrane proteins or receptors present on the surface of microglia are systematically reviewed and information about their structures, functions and specific roles in one or more neurological diseases. And on this basis, some prospects for the treatment of novel coronavirus neurological complications are presented.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Differentiation of benign and malignant changes in lymph nodes is extremely important. We aimed to identify the ultrasound and clinical diagnostic criteria permitting this differentiation. METHODS Clinical and ultrasound data were collected at Beijing Friendship Hospital from May 2019 to November 2020. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed using statistical methods, and a mathematical model was established to evaluate benign and malignant lymph nodes. RESULTS A total of 1343 LNs (person) with US-guided core needle or fine needle biopsy (CNB or FNB) were evaluated in the analysis. Variables with a high predictive power were sex (odds ratio, OR: 3.360, p<0.001), short diameter (OR: 4.660, p<0.001), short/long diameter (S/L) ratio (OR: 1.515, P=0.007), border (OR: 1.626, p=0.002), cortex echogenicity (OR: 2.089, P<0.001), fusion (OR: 2.313, p=0.002), vascularity (peripheral vascularity, OR: 3.424, p<0.001; mixed vascularity, OR: 4.127, p<0.001), and medical history (fever/local pain, OR: 0.316, p<0.001; tumor history in the drainage area, OR: 4.595, p<0.001; both, OR: 5.554, p<0.001). The cut-off score on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis using these eight variables was 2.5. The largest area under the ROC curve (Az) value was 82.3% (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.805-0.851), and the sensitivity (79.4%), specificity (72.3%), and accuracy (74.8%) were higher than those for nearly all the single indices. CONCLUSION The model of combination of ultrasound and clinical symptoms can preliminarily evaluate the benign and malignant of lymph nodes.

Abstract
Light is an important environmental factor for plant growth and development. Phytochrome B (phyB), a classical red/far-red light receptor, plays vital role in controlling plant photomorphogenesis and light-induced stomatal opening. Phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) accumulates rapidly and triggers a series of physiological and molecular events during the responses to multiple abiotic stresses. Recent studies showed that phyB mutant synthesizes more ABA and exhibits improved tolerance to salt and cold stress, suggesting that a crosstalk exists between light and ABA signaling pathway. However, whether ABA signaling components mediate responses to light remains unclear. Here, we showed that SnRK2.6 (Sucrose Nonfermenting 1-Related Protein Kinase 2.6), a key regulator in ABA signaling, interacts with phyB and participates in light-induced stomatal opening. First, we checked the interaction between phyB and SnRK2s, and found that SnRK2.2/2.3/2.6 kinases physically interacted with phyB in yeast and in vitro. We also performed co-IP assay to support that SnRK2.6 interacts with phyB in plant. To investigate the role of SnRK2.6 in red light-induced stomatal opening, we obtained the snrk2.6 mutant and overexpression lines, and found that snrk2.6 mutant exhibited a significantly larger stomatal aperture under red light treatment, while the two independent overexpression lines showed significantly smaller stomatal aperture, indicative of a negative role for SnRK2.6 in red light-induced stomatal opening. The interaction of SnRK2.6 with red light receptor and the negative role of SnRK2.6 in red light-induced stomatal opening provide new evidence for the crosstalk between ABA and red light in guard cell signaling.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperandrogenism (HA), inflammation, and oxidative damage play key roles in the pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Whether vitamin D adjuvant therapy improves hormonal, inflammation, and oxidative damage in PCOS patients has aroused widespread interest, but the results are controversial. To evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on hormonal, oxidative stress, and inflammatory parameters in patients with PCOS. METHODS A literature search was conducted in Medline, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science for studies related to PCOS and vitamin D supplementation. All reports of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published before December 2019 were identified. The fixed-effects model or random-effects model was used to calculate pooled estimates of standardized differences in means (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS A total of 956 identified studies were retrieved, and eighteen RCTs involving 1,060 participants were ultimately included in the current meta-analysis. The pooled results demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation in patients with PCOS resulted in a significant improvement in serum total testosterone (TT), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA). No significant effect on free testosterone (FT), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), free androgen index (FAI), nitric oxide (NO), and total glutathione (GSH) levels was found. Subgroup analysis showed that vitamin D supplementation reduced hs-CRP and MDA irrespective of the treatment course, type of vitamin D intervention, supplementation frequency, and dosage. Twelve weeks of vitamin D supplementation improved TT and TAC while low-dose vitamin D supplementation (≤1,000 IU/day) improved TT and DHEA-S. Vitamin D co-supplementation reduced TT, FT, and DHEA-S, while a daily supplementation regime improved TT, DHEA-S, and TAC in patients with PCOS. CONCLUSIONS The current meta-analysis demonstrates that vitamin D supplementation in patients with PCOS resulted in an improvement in the levels of TT, hs-CRP, TAC, and MDA, but did not affect FT, DHEA-S, SHBG, FAI, NO, and GSH levels. Vitamin D co-supplementation, low-dose vitamin D supplementation (≤1,000 IU/day), and daily supplementation frequency appeared to be more conducive to improving hormones, inflammation, and oxidative stress in PCOS patients.

Abstract
When plants encounter environmental stresses, phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) accumulates quickly and efficiently reduces water loss by inducing stomatal closure. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is an important regulator in ABA-induced stomatal closure, and ROS generation is modulated by multiple components in guard-cell ABA signaling. ROP interactive CRIB-containing protein 7 (RIC7) has been found to negatively regulate ABA-induced stomatal closure. However, the molecular details of the RIC7 function in this process are unclear. Here, by using two RIC7 overexpressing mutants, we confirmed the negative role of RIC7 in ABA-induced stomatal closure and found that guard cells of RIC7 overexpressing mutants generated less H2O2 than the wild type with ABA treatment, which were consistent with the reduced expression levels of ROS generation related NADPH oxidase genes AtRBOHD and AtRBOHF, and cytosolic polyamine oxidase genes PAO1 and PAO5 in the RIC7 overexpressing mutants. Furthermore, external applied H2O2 failed to rescue the defects of stomatal closure in RIC7 overexpressing mutants. These results suggest that RIC7 affects H2O2 generation in guard cells, and the function of H2O2 is dependent on RIC7 in ABA-induced stomatal closure, indicative of interdependency between RIC7 and H2O2 in ABA guard-cell signaling.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the clinical strategies for preservation of the exposed implant in chronic wounds and wound repair. Methods: From January 2016 to January 2019, totally 8 patients (4 males and 4 females, aged 10 to 73 years) sustaining postoperative chronic wounds with exposed implants were admitted to the Fourth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital. There were 2 cases of abdominal patch exposure after abdominal trauma surgery, 2 cases of titanium plate exposure post craniocerebral surgery, 3 cases of internal fixator exposure post orthopedic surgery, and 1 case of cerebrospinal fluid drainage tube exposure after craniocerebral surgery. The wound exudate was collected for bacterial culture on admission. On the basis of glycemic control and correction of anemia and hypoproteinemia, thorough wound debridement was performed as soon as possible and the wound area after debridement ranged from 2.0 cm×0.5 cm to 6.0 cm×5.0 cm. The wounds of 4 patients were immediately closed after debridement, including 1 case by primary closure, 1 case by primary closure after local filling of platelet rich plasma gel, and 2 cases by local flap transplantation, with flap size of 10.0 cm×8.0 cm and 12.0 cm×8.0 cm, respectively. The donor sites of flaps were sutured directly and all the incisions were treated with continuous vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) after surgery. The other 4 patients were treated with continuous VSD after debridement to improve the wound bed. The wound of 1 case healed gradually, 1 case received direct wound suturing, and the wounds of 2 cases were repaired with thin split-thickness skin grafts from the thigh or the head. The results of bacterial culture of wound exudate on admission, wound healing post surgery, and follow-up were observed and recorded. Results: The bacterial culture of wound exudate on admission was positive in 6 patients, and 10 strains of bacteria were isolated with Staphylococcus epidermidis as the main pathogen. All the skin grafts or flaps of patients survived post surgery, with the incisions and wounds healed and all the implants preserved. After 1 to 3 years of follow-up, no recurrence of wound was found in any patient. Conclusions: The postoperative chronic wounds with exposed implants can be closed in primary stage by direct suturing or flap transplantation if it is clean enough on the basis of thorough debridement. The wounds with large defects or serious infection can be treated with continuous VSD firstly and then closed with direct suturing or skin grafting for delayed wound closure, thereby to reach the treatment goal of preserving the implants and repairing the wounds simultaneously.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics and imaging manifestations of primary bone lymphoma (PBL) located in the jaw. Methods: Clinical data of 14 PBL patients admitted to The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2014 to April 2019 were retrospectively analyzed, which including age, gender, location, chief complaint, laboratory test, imaging manifestations and so on. Results: Among the 14 PBL patients, 10 were male and 4 were female. Age range from 4 to 79 years, median age was 56 years old. There were 6 cases involved maxillary, 7 cases involved mandible and 1 case involved mandible and maxillary simultaneously. Twelve patients were admitted with local mass as the chief complaint, 3 had a history of toothache, 4 had loosen tooth and 2 had numbness of lips and cheeks. Two cases of oral mass with mucosal surface ulcer or abscess formation. One case complained of fever, night sweats and other systemic symptoms. The imaging findings showed 8 cases of osteolytic lesions, 1 case of sclerosis, 4 cases of mixed lesions and 1 case of cystic lesions. One case had periosteum reaction. In 12 cases, there was an obvious mass, which was characterized by the large soft-tissue mass and marrow changes were associated with surprisingly little cortical destruction. Conclusions: PBL is more common in middle aged male. The upper and lower jaw bones can be involved. Clinical and imaging manifestations lack characteristics, and common dental or periodontal symptoms such as toothache, tooth loosening, and paresthesia may occur. However, the imaging characteristics of large soft tissue masses with small degree of bone destruction can be used as an important basis for the differential diagnosis of osteomyelitis, squamous cell carcinoma, osteosarcoma and other diseases.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of the multi-material artifact reduction (MMAR) algorithm of spectral CT in reducing the beam hardening artifacts in dental restoration material. Methods: Three-unit fixed bridge restorations were fabricated on the first to third molars in pig jaw. Gold alloy, zirconia, cobalt chromium alloy, nickel chromium alloy and pure titanium were used as materials for these fixed bridges. After restoration delivery, the pig jaw was scaned using energy spectrum CT machines. Images in regular 120 kVp scan mode were used as conventional group, and reconstructed single-energy horizontal images of 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130 and 140 keV in energy spectrum scanning mode were used as energy spectrum group, and reconstructed images applied MMAR technology in energy spectrum scanning mode were used as energy spectrum MMAR group. Each group was scanned 10 times to measure CT value and noise of muscles around dental prosthetic materials and adjacent non-artifact layers. Artifact index was calculated. Two radiologists scored the image quality of each group subjectively. Kruskal Wallis rank sum test was used to compare the difference of image noise, artifact index and subjective score among the control group and the best keV condition in the energy spectrum group and the energy spectrum MMAR group. Results: The image noise of energy spectrum group and energy spectrum MMAR group decreased gradually with the increase of single energy level. The artifact index of pure titanium restorations in conventional group, energy spectrum group and energy spectrum MMAR group were 71.0±8.0, 21.4±2.7 and 14.7±2.7 respectively, and these values were significantly lower than those of other materials in the same group (P<0.05). The subjective image quality scores in energy spectrum MMAR group were as follows: 3.0±0.2 for gold alloy, 4.3±0.5 for zirconia, 3.0±0.4 for cobalt chromium alloy, 3.1±0.4 for cobalt chromium alloy, and 4.6±0.5 for pure titanium. These scores were significantly smaller than those in the conventional group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in noise between energy spectrum group and energy spectrum MMAR group (P>0.05), and the noise values in energy spectrum group and energy spectrum MMAR group were significantly lower than that in the conventional group (P<0.05). Conclusions: Artifacts of pure titanium is minimal. Energy spectrum CT combined with MMAR technology can effectively reduce the artifacts of gold, zirconia, cobalt-chromium alloy, nickel-titanium alloy and pure titanium. This technique can be used as an effective method to remove artifacts of dental prosthesis.

Abstract
The mechanism of superconductivity in cuprates remains one of the big challenges of condensed matter physics. High-T c cuprates crystallize into a layered perovskite structure featuring copper oxygen octahedral coordination. Due to the Jahn Teller effect in combination with the strong static Coulomb interaction, the octahedra in high-T c cuprates are elongated along the c axis, leading to a 3dx 2-y 2 orbital at the top of the band structure wherein the doped holes reside. This scenario gives rise to 2D characteristics in high-T c cuprates that favor d-wave pairing symmetry. Here, we report superconductivity in a cuprate Ba2CuO4-y , wherein the local octahedron is in a very exceptional compressed version. The Ba2CuO4-y compound was synthesized at high pressure at high temperatures and shows bulk superconductivity with critical temperature (T c ) above 70 K at ambient conditions. This superconducting transition temperature is more than 30 K higher than the T c for the isostructural counterparts based on classical La2CuO4 X-ray absorption measurements indicate the heavily doped nature of the Ba2CuO4-y superconductor. In compressed octahedron, the 3d3z 2-r 2 orbital will be lifted above the 3dx 2-y 2 orbital, leading to significant 3D nature in addition to the conventional 3dx 2-y 2 orbital. This work sheds important light on advancing our comprehensive understanding of the superconducting mechanism of high T c in cuprate materials.

Abstract
We report a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Li1+y(Cd,Mn)P, wherein carrier is doped via excess Li while spin is doped by isovalence substitution of Mn2+ into Cd2+. The extended Cd 4d-orbitals lead to more itinerant characters of Li1+y(Cd,Mn)P than that of analogous Li1+y(Zn,Mn)P. A higher Curie temperature of 45 K than that for Li1+y(Zn,Mn)P is obtained in Li1+y(Cd,Mn)P polycrystalline samples by Arrott plot technique. The p-type carriers are determined by Hall effect measurements. The first principle calculations and X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that occupation of excess Li is at Cd sites rather than the interstitial site. Consequently holes are doped by excess Li substitution. More interestingly Li1+y(Cd,Mn)P shows a very low coercive field (<100 Oe) and giant negative magnetoresistance (~80%) in ferromagnetic state that will benefit potential spintronics applications.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound-guided microwave ablation in the treatment of benign thyroid nodules. A total of 474 benign thyroid nodules in 435 patients who underwent ultrasound-guided microwave ablation from September 2012 to August 2015 were included. Nodule volume and thyroid function were measured before treatment and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months and subsequently after every 6 months. The nodule volume reduction rate and changes of thyroid function were evaluated. The volume of all thyroid nodules significantly decreased after ultrasound-guided microwave ablation. The average volume was 13.07 ± 0.95 ml before treatment, and 1.14 ± 0.26 ml at 12-months follow-up. The mean volume reduction rate was 90% and the final volume reduction rate was 94%. The volume reduction rate of mainly cystic nodules was significantly higher than that of simple solid and mainly solid nodules (all P < 0.05). The pretreatment volume of nodules was positively correlated with the final volume reduction rate at final follow-up ( P = 0.004). No serious complications were observed after treatment. In conclusion, ultrasound-guided microwave ablation is an effective and safe technique for treatment of benign thyroid nodules, and has the potential for clinical applications. Impact statement Ultrasound-guided MWA is an effective and safe technique for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules. It can significantly reduce the nodule volume, improve the patients' clinical symptoms, has less complication, guarantees quick recovery, meets patients' aesthetic needs, and shows less interference on the physiological and psychological aspects of the body. MWA should be a good complement to traditional open surgery and has potentials in clinical applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the feasibility and short-term effect of single scrotal-incision orchidopexy (SSIO) without ligation of the processus vaginalis (PV) in the treatment of palpable undescended testis (PUDT). METHODS This retrospective study included 109 cases of PUDT (125 sides) and 15 cases of impalpable undescended testis (IUDT). The former underwent SSIO without PV ligation (group A, n = 53) or standard inguinal orchidopexy with PV ligation (group B, n = 56) while the latter received laparoscopic exploration (group C). We analyzed the success rate of SSIO in the management of PUDT, postoperative complications, and incidence rates of hernia and hydrocele, and compared the relevant parameters between groups A and B. RESULTS The median age of the PUDT patients was 1.4 (0.6-11.0) years. Group A included 24 cases of left PUDT (2 with hydrocele), 20 cases of right PUDT (1 with hydrocele), and 9 cases of bilateral PUDT, the success rate of which was 95.1%. Group B consisted of 27 cases of left PUDT, 22 cases of right PUDT (3 with hernias), and 7 cases of bilateral PUDT. The rate of PV patency in the PUDT patients was 80.8% (101/125). Laparoscopic exploration of the 15 IUDT patients revealed 2 cases of congenital testis absence, 6 cases of testis dysplasia, all treated by surgical removal, 3 cases of staying around the inner ring, descended by inguinal orchidopexy, and the other 4 treated by laparoscopic surgery. The incisions healed well in all cases, with no testicular atrophy, inguinal hernia or hydrocele. CONCLUSIONS Single scrotal-incision orchidopexy without PV ligation is a safe and feasible procedure for the treatment of palpable undescended testis, which avoids the risk of inguinal hernia or hydrocele.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the clinical effect of closed reduction and minimally invasive treatment of humeral shaft fractures in children. METHODS From July 2011 to April 2015, 39 cases of pediatric humeral shaft fractures were treated by closed reduction and external fixation, including 27 males and 12 females with a mean age of 8.6 years old ranging from 3 to 14 years old. Time from injury to the treatment was 2 h to 7 days with an average of 2.7 days. There were 6 cases of upper fracture, 21 cases of middle fracture and 12 cases of lower fracture. All children were closed injury, appeared pain, swelling, local deformity and limited mobility and other symptoms after injury. X-ray examination showed humeral shaft fracture. Neer score of shoulder joint function and HSS score of elbow joint function were used to record and analyze the pain, function and activity of shoulder and elbow joint before and after treatment. RESULTS All the 39 cases were followed up for 6 to 12 months with a mean of 8.6 months. Two cases appeared postoperative superficial infection of the needle, and healed after dress; other cases gained good pinhole healing. There were significant differences in the pain, function and activity of the shoulder of Neer score before and after the treatment (P<0.05). There were significant differences in the pain and function of the elbow of HSS before and after treatment (P<0.05). According to the evaluation of Neer score of shoulder function, the total score was 88.82±2.50, 29 cases were excellent, 9 cases were good, and 1 case was fair. According to the evaluation of HSS score of elbow joint function evaluation, the total score was 91.51±5.09, 30 cases were excellent, 7 cases were good, 2 cases were general. CONCLUSIONS Manual closed reduction combined with external fixation for the treatment of humeral shaft fractures in children has advantages of less trauma, definite reduction effect, reliable fixation and benefit for early functional exercise of the shoulder and elbow joint. This therapy can be used as one of clinical methods for the treatment of humeral shaft fractures in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of different manipulative reduction for children's distal radioulnar fracture and dorsal dislocation. METHODS From June 2013 to June 2014, 80 children with distal radioulnar fracture and dorsal dislocation were treated by bone setting manipulative reduction including 51 males and 29 females with an average age of 6.5 years old ranging from 3 to 14 years old. Time from injury to treatment was 1 h to 6 d, 31 cases were on the right, 49 cases were on the left. Among them, 45 cases were type I of overlapping displacement, 35 cases were type II. The displacement of the fracture was observed by clinical manifestations and X-ray examination. Under fluoroscopy, different techniques were used for reduction and fixation. After 3 weeks of over wrist fixation, the splints were overturned and fixed again for 1 to 2 weeks, then were removed. The wrist joint function was evaluated based on Dienst criteria. RESULTS Eighty cases of fracture were successfully operated one time, all reached anatomic reduction or near anatomic reduction. Eighty children were followed up for 3 months to 1 year. All the fractures healed, and the healing time was 4 to 5 weeks with an average of 4.6 weeks. All patients removed the splint 3 months later, the results were excellent in 72 cases, good in 7 cases and fair in 1 case, the excellent and good rate was 98.75%. CONCLUSIONS Bone setting manipulation for children's distal radioulnar fracture and dorsal dislocation can get good reduction. At 1 month after the removal of the splint, wrist function and finger strength gradually recovered and returned to normal after 3 months.

Abstract
Determination of a gene expression in guard cells is essential for studying stomatal movements. GUS staining is one means of detecting the localization of a gene expression in guard cells. If a gene is specially expressed in guard cells, the whole cotyledons or rosette leaf can be used for GUS staining. However, if a gene is expressed in both mesophyll and guard cells, it is hard to exhibit a clear expression of the gene in guard cells by a GUS staining image from leaf. To gain a clear guard cell GUS image of small G protein ROP7, a gene expressed in both mesophyll and guard cells, we peeled the epidermal strips from the leaf of 3-4 week-old plants. After removing the mesophyll cells, the epidermal strips were used for GUS staining. We compared the GUS staining images from epidermal strips or leaf of small G protein ROP7 and RopGEF4, a gene specifically expressed in guard cells, and found that GUS staining of epidermal strips provided a good method to show the guard cell expression of a gene expressed in both mesophyll and guard cells. This protocol is applicable for any genes that are expressed in guard cells of Arabidopsis, or other plants that epidermal strips can be easily peeled from the leaf.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the feasibility of the ladder step strategy in surgical repair of congenital concealed penis in children. METHODS This study included 52 children with congenital concealed penis treated in the past two years by surgical repair using the ladder step strategy, which consists of five main steps: cutting the narrow ring of the foreskin, degloving the penile skin, fixing the penile skin at the base, covering the penile shaft, and reshaping the prepuce. The perioperative data of the patients were prospectively collected and statistically described. RESULTS Of the 52 patients, 20 needed remodeling of the frenulum and 27 received longitudinal incision in the penoscrotal junction to expose and deglove the penile shaft. The advanced scrotal flap technique was applied in 8 children to cover the penile shaft without tension, the pedicled foreskin flap technique employed in 11 to repair the penile skin defect, and excision of the webbed skin of the ventral penis performed in another 44 to remodel the penoscrotal angle. The operation time, blood loss, and postoperative hospital stay were 40-100 minutes, 5-30 ml, and 3-6 days, respectively. Wound bleeding and infection occurred in 1 and 5 cases, respectively. Follow-up examinations at 3 and 6 months after surgery showed that all the children had a satisfactory penile appearance except for some minor complications (2 cases of penile retraction, 2 cases of redundant ventral skin, and 1 case of iatrogenic penile curvature). CONCLUSIONS The ladder step strategy for surgical repair of congenital concealed penis in children is a simple procedure with minor injury and satisfactory appearance of the penis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to observe levels of blood brain natriuretic peptides (BNPs) in patients with persistent atrial fibril-lation (AF) before and after catheter ablation. Thirty-six patients with persistent AF (28 successful surgeries and eight recurrent cases) and 36 healthy controls with normal sinus rhythm were recruited for this study. BNP levels in the AF and control groups were measured before and after catheter ablation. BNP levels before surgery were significantly higher in the persistent AF group than in the control group (P < 0.01). The successful surgery group had distinctly lower BNP levels before ablation than the recurrent group (P < 0.01). In the recurrent group, BNP levels 2 h after ablation were significantly lower than those be-fore ablation (P < 0.01); these levels increased after AF recurrence (P < 0.01) and were comparable with those before ablation (P < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis indicated that the BNP level was an inde-pendent factor for and predictor of AF recurrence (P < 0.01). The BNP level in patients with persistent AF is clinically important in predicting and evaluating AF recurrence after ablation.

Abstract
AIM: To explore the feasibility of non-invasive quantitative estimation of portal venous pressure by contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in a canine model.
METHODS: Liver fibrosis was established in adult canines (Beagles; n = 14) by subcutaneous injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). CEUS parameters, including the area under the time-intensity curve and intensity at portal/arterial phases (Qp/Qa and Ip/Ia, respectively), were used to quantitatively assess the blood flow ratio of the portal vein/hepatic artery at multiple time points. The free portal venous pressures (FPP) were measured by a multi-channel baroreceptor using a percutaneous approach at baseline and 8, 16, and 24 wk after CCl4 injections in each canine. Liver biopsies were obtained at the end of 8, 16, and 24 wk from each animal, and the stage of the fibrosis was assessed according to the Metavir scoring system. A Pearson correlation test was performed to compare the FPP with Qp/Qa and Ip/Ia.
RESULTS: Pathologic examination of 42 biopsies from the 14 canines at weeks 8, 16, and 24 revealed that liver fibrosis was induced by CCl4 and represented various stages of liver fibrosis, including F0 (n = 3), F1 (n = 12), F2 (n = 14), F3 (n = 11), and F4 (n = 2). There were significant differences in the measurements of Qp/Qa (19.85 ± 3.30 vs 10.43 ± 1.21, 9.63 ± 1.03, and 8.77 ± 0.96) and Ip/Ia (1.77 ± 0.37 vs 1.03 ± 0.12, 0.83 ± 0.10, and 0.69 ± 0.13) between control and canine fibrosis at 8, 16, and 24 wk, respectively (all P < 0.001). There were statistically significant negative correlations between FPP and Qp/Qa (r = -0.707, P < 0.001), and between FPP and Ip/Ia (r = -0.759, P < 0.001) in the canine fibrosis model. Prediction of elevated FPP based on Qp/Qa and Ip/Ia was highly sensitive, as assessed by the area under the receiver operating curve (0.866 and 0.895, respectively).
CONCLUSION: CEUS is a potential method to accurately, but non-invasively, estimate portal venous pressure through measurement of Qp/Qa and Ip/Ia parameters.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the relationship between serum free fatty acids (FFAs) levels and the severity of coronary artery lesions in elderly patients with coronary heart disease (CAD). Methods A total of 172 elderly patients who underwent coronary angiography were divided into CAD group (n = 128) and non-CAD group (n = 44) according to the results of coronary angiography. Serum FFAs and lipid levels were measured and the Gensini score were calculated. Results No matter the differences between age, gender and the usage of statins or not, there was no statistical significance in FFAs levels (P > 0.05). In terms of the Gensini score, it was higher in patients aged 70–79 years than in patients 60–69 years old [15.00 (5.00, 34.00) vs. 10.00 (2.00, 24.00), P < 0.05], higher in men than women [14.00 (4.00, 34.00) vs. 7.00 (2.50, 19.75), P < 0.05], and higher in patients on statins [13.50 (4.25, 33.50) vs. 6.50 (2.00, 18.00), P < 0.05]. The serum FFAs levels [449.50 (299.00, 624.75) mEq/L vs. 388.00 (258.50, 495.25) mEq/L, P < 0.05] and Gensini score [17.50 (8.00, 41.75) vs. 1.00 (0, 5.00), P < 0.05] were higher in the CAD group than in the non-CAD group. In the CAD group, there was no statistical significance in FFAs levels among patients with different numbers of diseased coronary vessels (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the FFAs levels were positively correlated with the Gensini score (r = 0.394, P = 0.005). Regression analysis showed that the FFAs levels were related to the Gensini score independently after adjusting for the other risk factors. Conclusions The serum FFAs levels were associated with the Gensini score in elderly patients with CAD. It might indicate FFAs as a biomarker predicting the severity of coronary artery lesions.

Abstract
The materials with adsorbent properties were produced from urban sewage sludge by two different procedures via microwave irradiation: (1) by one single pyrolysis stage (SC); (2) by chemical activation with ZnCl(2) (SZ). The BET, SEM and FT-IR have been used to evaluate the pore structural parameters and surface chemistry of the adsorbents, respectively. Subsequently they were used for adsorption of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The effects of various experimental parameters, such as pH, temperature were investigated in a batch-adsorption technique. The results showed that the adsorption of Cu(II) was maximal at pH 5.0. The kinetic study demonstrated that the adsorption process was followed the second-order kinetic equation. The experimental adsorption isotherm data were well fitted with Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) were found to be 3.88 and 10.56 mg/g for SC and SZ, respectively, in the solution of pH 5.0. Thermodynamic parameters such as changes in the enthalpy (ΔH(0)), entropy (ΔS(0)) and free energy (ΔG(0)) indicate that Cu(II) adsorption onto SC and SZ is an endothermic and spontaneous process in nature at 15-45°C. These results indicate that the sewage sludge-derived material via microwave induced ZnCl(2) activation is an effective and alternative adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in improving quality of life (QOL), reducing chemotoxicity and modulating immune function in patients undergoing chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with ovarian cancer were randomized to receive either TCM or placebo in addition to standard chemotherapy. The primary outcome was global health status (GHS) score, assessed by European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaire, while the secondary outcomes were other QOL items, chemotoxicity according to World Health Organization criteria and alterations in immune function as measured by immune cells count and the numbers of cytokines-secreting cells. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the GHS between the two groups. With adjustment for stage, chemotherapy type, disease status, age and baseline value, emotional function, cognitive function and nausea and vomiting were found to be worse or less improved in the TCM group compared with placebo group after six cycles of chemotherapy. The TCM group had less neutropenia after three cycles (0% grade 4 neutropenia versus 28.6%). There were no other significant differences in terms of chemotoxicity. Lymphocyte counts and cytokine activities decreased less in the TCM group. CONCLUSIONS TCM did not improve QOL but did have some effects in terms of maintaining immune function.

Abstract
The nature of the spin-density wave (SDW) and its relation with superconductivity are crucial issues in the newly discovered iron-pnictide superconductors. Particularly, it is unclear whether the superconducting phase and SDW are truly exclusive from each other. We here report splittings of the band structures in Sr1-xKxFe2As2 (x=0, 0.1, 0.18), and their unusual doping dependence. Our data on single crystalline samples prove that the SDW and superconductivity could coexist in iron pnictides.

Abstract
The magnetic properties in the parent compounds are often intimately related to the microscopic mechanism of superconductivity. Here we report the first direct measurements on the electronic structure of a parent compound of the newly discovered iron-based superconductor, BaFe2As2, which provides a foundation for further studies. We show that the energy of the spin density wave in BaFe2As2 is mainly lowered through exotic exchange splitting of the band structure.

Abstract
The apoplast of plant cells, which carries out multiple functions in plant metabolism and signaling, is not only a barrier but also the linker between the environment and the protoplast. To investigate the role of apoplastic proteins in the salt stress response, 10-d-old rice (Oryza sativa) plants were treated with 200 mM NaCl for 1, 3, or 6 h, and the soluble apoplast proteins were extracted for differential analysis compared with untreated controls using two-dimensional electrophoresis. Ten protein spots that increased or decreased significantly in abundance were identified by mass spectrometry. These proteins included some well-known biotic and abiotic stress-related proteins. Among them, an apoplastic protein, with extracellular domain-like cysteine-rich motifs (DUF26), O. sativa root meander curling (OsRMC), has shown drastically increased abundance in response to salt stress during the initial phase. OsRMC RNA interference transgenic rice has been generated to assess the function of OsRMC in the salt stress response. The results show that knocking down the expression level of OsRMC in transgenic rice led to insensitive seed germination, enhanced growth inhibition, and improved salt stress tolerance to NaCl than in untransgenic plants. These results indicate that plant apoplastic proteins may have important roles in the plant salt stress response.

Abstract
The misfit oxide, Bi2Ba1.3K0.6Co2.1O7.94, made of alternating rocksalt-structured [BiO/BaO] layers and hexagonal CoO2 layers, was studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, revealing the electronic structure of a highly strained oxide interface. We found that low-energy states are confined within individual sides of the interface, but scattered by the incommensurate crystal field from the other side. Furthermore, the high strain on the rocksalt layer induces large charge transfer to the CoO2 layer, and a novel effect, the interfacial enhancement of electron-phonon interactions, is discovered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The major risk factors for acute hepatitis B (AHB) in China and the viral factors determining the progression from acute to chronic hepatitis B remain largely unknown. METHODS Epidemiological studies within a population-based surveillance for AHB in adults were performed in Shanghai, China, including 294 patients, 588 matched controls and 572 family members of the patients. RESULTS Invasive medical procedures, household contact with hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers, body care and beauty treatments, and lack of HBV vaccination were independently associated with AHB. Among those risks, pedicure in bath centres emerged. Sixty-eight of 128 patients with AHB were genotyped including 33 with HBV B2 and 35 with HBV C2. Twenty-five (8.50%) of the 294 patients, including 20 with HBV C2 and 5 with HBV B2 (p = 0.013), progressed to chronic infection. Multivariate analysis showed that HBV C2 was independently associated with chronicification of AHB. Patients with HBV B2 were younger and there was a higher proportion of women than those with HBV C2. The prevalence of HBV B2 was higher in the patients than in neighbourhood chronic carriers. The chronic carriers with HBV B2 showed higher viral loads, higher hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seropositivity, and with higher proportion in men than those with HBV C2, implying that sexual contact plays a role in the transmission of HBV B2. Phylogenetic analysis showed that HBV C2 was frequently involved in transmissions within households. CONCLUSIONS Despite lower viral load and HBeAg status in the chronic carriers, HBV C2 was more prone to causing chronic infection than was HBV B2.

Abstract
NbSe2 is a prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) material, whose mechanism remains mysterious so far. With angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we recovered the long-lost nesting condition over a large broken-honeycomb region in the Brillouin zone, which consists of six saddle band point regions with high density of states (DOS), and large regions away from Fermi surfaces with negligible DOS at the Fermi energy. We show that the major contributions to the CDW formation come from these barely occupied states rather than the saddle band points. Our findings not only resolve a long-standing puzzle, but also overthrow the conventional wisdom that CDW is dominated by regions with high DOS.

Abstract
Situated in the central part of China, the Han River Basin is undergoing rapid social and economic development with some human interventions to be made soon which will profoundly influence the water environment of the basin. The integrated MIKE 11 model system comprising of a rainfall-runoff model (NAM), a non-point load evaluation model (LOAD), a hydrodynamic model (MIKE 11 HD) and a water quality model (ECOLab) was applied to investigate the impact of the Middle Route of the South-North Water Diversion Project on the Han River and the effectiveness of the 2 proposed mitigation projects, the 22 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the Yangtze-Han Water Diversion Project. The study concludes that business as usual will lead to a continuing rapid deterioration of the water quality of the Han River. Implementation of the Middle Route of the South-North Water Diversion Project in 2010 will bring disastrous consequence in the form of the remarkably elevated pollution level and high risk of algae bloom in the middle and lower reaches. The proposed WWTPs will merely lower the pollution level in the reach by around 10%, while the Yangtze-Han Water Diversion Project can significantly improve the water quality in the downstream 200-km reach. The results reveal that serious water quality problem will emerge in the middle reach between Xiangfan and Qianjiang in the future. Implementation of the South-North Water Diversion Project (phase II) in 2030 will further exacerbate the problem. In order to effectively improve the water quality of the Han River, it is suggested that nutrient removal processes should be adopted in the proposed WWTPs, and the pollution load from the non-point sources, especially the load from the upstream Henan Province, should be effectively controlled.

Abstract
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study is reported on a high quality optimally doped Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta high-Tc superconductor. In the antinodal region with a maximal d-wave gap, the symbolic superconducting coherence peak, which has been widely observed in multi-CuO2-layer cuprate superconductors, is unambiguously observed in a single-layer system. The associated peak-dip separation is just about 19 meV, which is much smaller than its counterparts in multilayered compounds, but correlates with the energy scales of spin excitations in single-layer cuprates.

Abstract
Using succinonitrile as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen, two bacterium strains named as J-1-3 and J-13-1 were isolated and screened out from the treatment facilities of Shanghai petrochemical wastewater treatment plant treating acrylic fiber production wastewater. The optimal growth conditions of the two strains in the degradation of succinonitrile with varied initial concentrations were determined through flask tests as follows: temperature 30 degrees C, shaker rotary speed of 250 r/min, inoculum percentage 0.1%, and initial pH 6. Results indicate that the two strains, especially J-13-1, exhibited a high efficiency for succinonitrile degradation. Thereafter, the bacterium strains were immobilized separately by sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol 1750 +/- 50, and applied to succinonitrile degradation again. Results show that in a very broad range of the initial succinonitrile concentration, i.e., 30-5,000 mg/L, the sodium alginate immobilized grains could degrade more than 80% of succinonitrile after 24 h under the experimental conditions of 30 degrees C, pH 6.5, and shaker rotary speed of 250 r/min. However, the polyvinyl alcohol immobilized grains tended to inflate and break down due to a weak mechanical strength.

Abstract
The charge density wave (CDW) is usually associated with Fermi surfaces nesting. We here report a new CDW mechanism discovered in a 2H-structured transition metal dichalcogenide, where the two essential ingredients of the CDW are realized in very anomalous ways due to the strong-coupling nature of the electronic structure. Namely, the CDW gap is only partially open, and charge density wave vector match is fulfilled through participation of states of the large Fermi patch, while the straight Fermi surface sections have secondary or negligible contributions.

Abstract
The electronic structure of a new charge-density-wave system or superconductor, 1T-Cu(x)TiSe(2), has been studied by photoemission spectroscopy. A correlated semiconductor band structure is revealed for the undoped case, which resolves a long-standing controversy in the system. With Cu doping, the charge-density wave is suppressed by the raising of the chemical potential, while the superconductivity is enhanced by the enhancement of the density of states, and possibly suppressed at higher doping by the strong scattering.

Abstract
In the present photoemission study of a cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta, we discovered a large scale dispersion of the lowest band, which unexpectedly follows the band structure calculation very well. Similar behavior observed in blue bronze and the Mott insulator Ca2CuO2Cl2 suggests that the origin of hopping-dominated dispersion in an overdoped cuprate might be quite complicated. A giant kink in the dispersion is observed, and the complete self-energy containing all interaction information is extracted for a doped cuprate. These results recovered significant missing pieces in our current understanding of the electronic structure of cuprates.
