Seaweed-inspired underwater anti-oil-fouling and anti-fogging coating with mechanical durability

Ecofriendly fabrication of anti-oil-fouling materials is of interest. Surfaces with underwater superoleophobicity have been fabricated which exhibit limited mechanical durability and water resistance. In this study, we report on a bioinspired bilayer design of a transparent anti-oil-fouling coating. Seaweed surfaces show anti-oil-fouling in the sea due to its high surface hydration ability. Mussels can adhere tightly onto a surface with good stability in the sea by virtue of its levodopa-containing secretions. The surface layer was fabricated using a crosslinked combination of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sodium alginate (AlgS) inspired by seaweed, with the addition of calcium ions. Polydopamine (PDA), a derivative of levodopa, was used as the underlayer to enhance bonding strength and water resistance. Oil that adhered to the coated surface was spontaneously detached upon immersion in water. The mechanism underlying this anti-oil-fouling effect was elucidated using Gibbs free energy theory. The coating exhibited mechanical durability and water resistance. The coating is transparent and preserves the original color of the substrate. The coated glass showed stable anti-fogging and anti-frost performance. These coatings hold promise for a wide range of anti-oil-fouling applications.

Ligand-protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have become promising nanomaterials in fluorescence (FL) methods for mercury ions (Hg2+) monitoring, but low FL efficiency hinders their widespread application. Herein, AuNCs/cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (AuNCs/Ce-MOFs) were prepared by loading 6-aza-2-thiothymine-protected AuNCs (ATT-AuNCs) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect on the surface of Ce-MOFs by electrostatic attraction. This strategy improved the FL intensity of AuNCs through two aspects: (i) the AIE effect of ATT-AuNCs and (ii) the confinement effect of Ce-MOFs, which improved the restriction of intramolecular motion (RIM) of ATT-AuNCs. In addition, Ce-MOFs could adsorb and aggregate Hg2+ during detection, which might increase the local concentration. Therefore, based on the high FL signal of AuNCs/Ce-MOFs and enriched Hg2+, sensitive detection of Hg2+ could be achieved. More importantly, the strong specific recognition between AuNCs and Hg2+ could guarantee selectivity. The developed FL sensor exhibited superior detection performances with a wide linear range of 0.2-500 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 0.067 ng mL-1. Furthermore, the FL sensor used for sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+ in real samples, and the results agreed well with the standard method. In summary, this work proposed an effective and generalized strategy for improving the FL efficiency of AuNCs, which would greatly facilitate their application in pollutant monitoring.

Long-term trends in beverage-specific drinking in the National Alcohol Surveys: Differences by sex, age, and race and ethnicity

BACKGROUND

Despite substantial declines in underage drinking and binge drinking, alcohol consumption has increased in the past 30 years. This study examined how beverage-specific drinking patterns varied by sex, age, and race and ethnicity from 1979 to 2020.

METHODS

Secondary data analysis was conducted on pooled data from the National Alcohol Survey series from 1979 to 2020 of a sample of U.S. adults ages 18 years or older. Total and beverage-specific volume were calculated from graduated frequency questions on reported beverage type, which included beer, wine, and spirits. Sex-stratified analyses focused on descriptive trends of each alcohol measure over time and by age and race and ethnicity. Time-varying effect models were also conducted to identify subgroups at higher risk for increased consumption over time.

RESULTS

Women's drinking increased, with alcohol volume rising substantially from 2000 to 2020; the largest increase was among women 30 and older. Men's alcohol volume also rose over this period but remained below the levels of 1979 and 1984, with older adults increasing their consumption those 18-29 decreased their drinking. Beverage-specific trends showed some similarities by gender: in 2020, wine volume was at its highest level for both women and men, while spirits volume also was at its highest level for men and in women was tied with the 1979 peak in spirits consumption. Increases were also found among Black men and women and Latina women from 2000 to 2020.

CONCLUSIONS

Given the increases in alcohol volume, particularly among women and older age groups, alcohol policy, interventions, and education should consider ways to reduce harms associated with alcohol use among these groups. Continued monitoring of beverage-specific drinking patterns is needed to track policy-relevant changes.

Hydrophobic functionalization of a metal-organic framework as an ammonia visual sensing material under high humidity conditions

Since exhaled ammonia (NH3) is one of the metabolic markers of liver and kidney diseases, ammonia visual sensing materials in humid environments have received extensive attention and investigation. Herein, through a tailor-made pore environment provided by metal-organic framework (MOF) materials (CH3-Cu(BDC)), we achieved NH3 anti-interference sensing with apparent color changing under humid conditions. With methyl (CH3-) functionalization, CH3-Cu(BDC) demonstrated a strong response for trace ammonia and showed high selectivity under a humid environment. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations indicated that CH3-Cu(BDC) showed stronger attraction towards NH3 molecules than H2O. Benefiting from the target changing coordination environment, CH3-Cu(BDC) showed a rapid response and simple analysis properties for patients' exhaled air. The strategy used in this study not only provides a demonstration case for NH3 colorimetric sensing with high humidity and anti-interference but also introduces a new method for painless and quick exhaled breath analysis for diagnosis of patients with kidney and liver diseases.

Lesions of the lateral habenula excite dopamine neurons in the ventral tegmental area and serotonin neurons in the dorsal raphe nuclei in hemiparkinsonian rats

The lateral habenula (LHb) projects to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and dorsal raphe nuclei (DRN) that deliver dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) to cortical and limbic regions such as the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), hippocampus and basolateral amygdala (BLA). Dysfunctions of VTA-related mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic and DRN-related serotonergic systems contribute to non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, how the LHb affects the VTA and DRN in PD remains unclear. Here, we used electrophysiological and neurochemical approaches to explore the effects of LHb lesions on the firing activity of VTA and DRN neurons, as well as the levels of DA and 5-HT in related brain regions in unilateral 6-hydroxydopamie (6-OHDA)-induced PD rats. We found that compared to sham lesions, lesions of the LHb increased the firing rate of DA neurons in the VTA and 5-HT neurons in the DRN, but decreased the firing rate of GABAergic neurons in the same nucleus. In addition, lesions of the LHb increased the levels of DA and 5-HT in the mPFC, ventral hippocampus and BLA compared to sham lesions. These findings suggest that lesions of the LHb enhance the activity of mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic and serotonergic systems in PD.

Atroposelective Synthesis of Axially Chiral Diaryl Ethers by N-Heterocyclic-Carbene-Catalyzed Sequentially Desymmetric/Kinetic Resolution Process

We describe herein an N-heterocyclic-carbene-catalyzed atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral diaryl ethers. Through a sequentially enantioselective desymmetric process and a kinetic resolution process, the products could be constructed in good yields with excellent enantiopurities. Both alcohols and phenols were compatible with this catalytic system. The axially chiral carboxylic acids derived from the esters were proven to be potential chiral ligands for asymmetric synthesis, for example, Rh(III)-catalyzed enantioselective C-H functionalization.

Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire: Scale development in a sample of Mexican American young adults and association with ADH7

BACKGROUND

To understand why some individuals who develop alcohol use disorders (AUD) first begin to drink heavily, a number of scales have been developed that index aspects of alcohol craving and restraint from drinking. We developed a new measure called the Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire (ACQ), based in part on items modified from scales used to index binge eating because there are data to suggest that binge eating and binge drinking may share common antecedents. We present an initial validity study using data from a sample of Mexican Americans.

METHODS

Data were from 699 Mexican American young adults in San Diego County, CA. A subsample (n=60) had short-term test-retest data. Factor analysis and reliability assessment guided item reduction. Item response theory (IRT) analyses quantified item severity and identified questions with differential item functioning (DIF). Logistic regression assessed associations of mean scale scores with AUD, adjusting for key demographics, alcohol expectancies and subjective response to alcohol. We also examined associations with a protective genetic variant downstream from the alcohol dehydrogenase 7 gene (ADH7).

RESULTS

The scale was reduced from 20 to 14 questions, which can be summarized by a single overall score (Cronbach's alpha=0.896) or by two sub-scores (Consumption: 12 items, Cronbach's alpha=0.896; Enjoyment: 2 items, Cronbach's alpha=0.780). Test-retest reliability was very high (0.80-0.98) in this sample. The overall ACQ score and each subdomain score were strongly associated with AUD (ORs= 5.95 mild; 11.41 moderate; 48.56 severe) and family history of AUD. Respondents with the protective genetic variant had significantly lower overall ACQ scores (p<.001).

CONCLUSION

The ACQ is a novel measure of alcohol consumption with strong relationships with both the AUD phenotype and ADH7 gene variants in a sample of Mexican American young adults.

Synaptic cell-adhesion molecule latrophilin-2 is differentially directed to dendritic domains of hippocampal neurons

Hippocampal pyramidal cells possess elaborate dendritic arbors with distinct domains that are targeted with input-specific synaptic sites. This synaptic arrangement is facilitated by synaptic cell-adhesion molecules that act as recognition elements to connect presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons. In this study, we investigate the organization of the synaptic recognition molecule latrophilin-2 at the surface of pyramidal neurons classified by spatial positioning and action potential firing patterns. Surveying two hippocampal neurons that highly express latrophilin-2, late-bursting CA1 pyramidal cells and early-bursting subiculum pyramidal cells, we found the molecule to be differentially positioned on their respective dendritic compartments. Investigating this latrophilin-2 positioning at the synaptic level, we found that the molecule is not present within either the pre- or postsynaptic terminal but rather is tightly coupled to synapses at a perisynaptic location. Together these findings indicate that hippocampal latrophilin-2 distribution patterning is cell-type specific, and requires multiple postsynaptic neurons for its synaptic localization.

Long-term intermittent theta burst stimulation enhanced hippocampus-dependent memory by regulating hippocampal theta oscillation and neurotransmitter levels in healthy rats

Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS), an updated pattern of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, is a potential candidate for improving memory. The hippocampus has been shown to be involved in the memory-enhancing effect induced by iTBS. However, it remains largely unknown whether this effect is achieved by regulating hippocampal theta oscillation and neurotransmitters gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate, which are strongly related to memory. Thus, we investigated the effect of 14 days of iTBS on hippocampus-dependent memory and further explored the roles of hippocampal theta oscillation and neurotransmitters GABA and glutamate in this effect. We found that compared to sham iTBS, real iTBS enhanced hippocampus-dependent memory measured by hole-board test and object place recognition test. Further, real iTBS increased the density of c-Fos positive neurons and normalized power of theta oscillation in the dorsal hippocampus (dHip) compared to sham iTBS. Interestingly, we observed a decrease in the level of extracellular GABA and an increase in the level of extracellular glutamate in the dHip after real iTBS. Our results suggest that long-term iTBS improved hippocampus-dependent memory, which may be attributed to the enhancement of theta oscillation and altered levels of extracellular GABA and glutamate in the dHip.

Isolation of Sensing Units and Adsorption Groups Based on MOF-on-MOF Hierarchical Structure for Both Highly Sensitive Detection and Removal of Hg2

Bifunctional materials have attracted ongoing interest in the field of detection and removal of contaminants because of their integration of two functions, but they exhibit commonly exceptional performance in only one of these two aspects. The interaction between the two functional units of the bifunctional materials may compromise their sensing and adsorption abilities. Guided by the concept of domain building blocks (DBBs), a hierarchical metal-organic framework (MOF)-on-MOF hybrid was designed by growing gold nanoclusters (AuNCs)-embedded zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (AuNCs/ZIF-8) on the surface of Zr-MOF (UiO-66-NH2) for the simultaneous detection and removal of Hg2+. In the hybrid, the amino groups (-NH2) and AuNCs─which were the adsorption groups and sensing units, respectively, were isolated from each other. Specifically, the adsorption groups (-NH2) were assembled in the inner UiO-66-NH2 layer, while the sensing units (AuNCs) were confined in the outer ZIF-8 layer. This hierarchical structure not only spatially hindered the electron transfer between these two units but also triggered the aggregation-induced emission of AuNCs because of the confinement of ZIF-8 on the AuNCs, thus changing the fluorescence of AuNCs from quenching to enhancement. The newly prepared UiO-66-NH2@AuNCs/ZIF-8 hybrid, as expected, showed an ultralow detection limit (0.42 ppb) and a high adsorption capacity (129.9 mg·g-1) for Hg2+. Overall, this work provides a feasible approach to improve the integrated performance of MOF-based composites based on DBBs.

Hydrogen bond unlocking-driven pore structure control for shifting multi-component gas separation function

Purification of ethylene (C2H4) as the most extensive and output chemical, from complex multi-components is of great significance but highly challenging. Herein we demonstrate that precise pore structure tuning by controlling the network hydrogen bonds in two highly-related porous coordination networks can shift the efficient C2H4 separation function from C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 ternary mixture to CO2/C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 quaternary mixture system. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the different amino groups on the triazolate ligands resulted in the change of the hydrogen bonding in the host network, which led to changes in the pore shape and pore chemistry. Gas adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and gas-loaded crystal structure analysis indicated that the coordination network Zn-fa-atz (2) weakened the affinity for three C2 hydrocarbons synchronously including C2H4 but enhanced the CO2 adsorption due to the optimized CO2-host interaction and the faster CO2 diffusion, leading to effective C2H4 production from the CO2/C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 mixture in one step based on the experimental and simulated breakthrough data. Moreover, it can be shaped into spherical pellets with maintained porosity and separation performance.

Clinical considerations of CDK4/6 inhibitors in HER2 positive breast cancer

Deregulation of cell cycles can result in a variety of cancers, including breast cancer (BC). In fact, abnormal regulation of cell cycle pathways is often observed in breast cancer, leading to malignant cell proliferation. CDK4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) can block the G1 cell cycle through the cyclin D-cyclin dependent kinase 4/6-inhibitor of CDK4-retinoblastoma (cyclinD-CDK4/6-INK4-RB) pathway, thus blocking the proliferation of invasive cells, showing great therapeutic potential to inhibit the spread of BC. So far, three FDA-approved drugs have been shown to be effective in the management of advanced hormone receptor positive (HR+) BC: palbociclib, abemaciclib, and ribociclib. The combination strategy of CDK4/6i and endocrine therapy (ET) has become the standard therapeutic regimen and is increasingly applied to advanced BC patients. The present study aims to clarify whether CDK4/6i can also achieve a certain therapeutic effect on Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive (HER2+) BC. Studies of CDK4/6i are not limited to patients with estrogen receptor positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (ER+/HER2-) advanced BC, but have also expanded to other types of BC. Several pre-clinical and clinical trials have demonstrated the potential of CDK4/6i in treating HER2+ BC. Therefore, this review summarizes the current knowledge and recent findings on the use of CDK4/6i in this type of BC, and provides ideas for the discovery of new treatment modalities.

Treatment of Intracerebral Hemorrhage with Traditional Chinese Medicine Monomer Wogonin by Modifying NLRP3 with METTL14 to Inhibit Neuronal Cell Pyroptosis

The aim of this study was to investigate the alleviating effect of wogonin on intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and its mechanism. The hemin-treated PC-12 cells were constructed to mimic ICH in vitro. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) analysis was used for cell viability measurement and flow cytometry was for pyroptosis detection. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) assay and western blot were used to detect the protein levels of pyroptosis-related proteins. The modification level of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) combined with m6A dot blot assays. Molecular docking experiments analyzed the binding of wogonin and METTL14 protein. The correlation between METTL14 and NLRP3 was confirmed by bioinformatics analysis and dual luciferase reporter gene detection. ICH was induced in mice injected with collagenase into the basal ganglia, and the neurobehavioral damage was evaluated. Triphenyltetrazolium chloride monohydrate (TTC) staining and neurological scores were used to assess brain damage in mice. The results demonstrated that wogonin alleviated neuronal cell pyroptosis, and was molecularly docked with METTL14. Overexpression of METTL14 partly reversed the protecting effects of wogonin on brain in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, NLRP3 was methylated by METTL14. Taken together, wogonin inhibits neuronal pyroptosis and thus treats IHC by inhibiting METTL14 and its methylated NLRP3.

Proteomics and Metabolomics Analysis Reveal the Regulation Mechanism of Linoleate Isomerase Activity and Function in Propionibacterium acnes

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) holds significant application prospects due to its anticancer, anti-atherosclerosis, lipid-lowering, weight-loss, and growth-promoting functions. The key to its efficient production lies in optimizing the biocatalytic performance of linoleic acid isomerase (LAI). Here, we constructed a Propionibacterium acnes mutant library and screened positive mutants with high linoleate isomerase activity. The proteomics and metabolomics were used to explore the mechanism in the regulation of linoleic acid isomerase activity. High-throughput proteomics revealed 104 differentially expressed proteins unique to positive mutant strains of linoleic acid isomerase of which 57 were upregulated and 47 were downregulated. These differentially expressed proteins were primarily involved in galactose metabolism, the phosphotransferase system, starch metabolism, and sucrose metabolism. Differential metabolic pathways were mainly enriched in amino acid biosynthesis, including glutamate metabolism, the Aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis pathway, and the ABC transporter pathway. The upregulated metabolites include dl-valine and Acetyl coA, while the downregulated metabolites include Glutamic acid and Phosphoenolpyruvate. Overall, the activity of linoleic acid isomerase in the mutant strain was increased by the regulation of key proteins involved in galactose metabolism, sucrose metabolism, and the phosphotransferase system. This study provides a theoretical basis for the development of high-yield CLA food.

Targeting the Nrf2-dependent mechanism of b-Ecdysterone in attenuating the motor dysfunction in the MPTP/Pro-induced Parkinson's disease mice model

Oxidative stress is a pivotal stimulating factor in neurocyte apoptosis and has been involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we have demonstrated that the improvement in the motor disorder of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)/Pro-induced mice caused by b-Ecdysterone (b-Ecd) treatment is due to its antioxidant properties. Using open field, rotarod, and pole climbing tests, we have found that b-Ecd alleviates motor disorder in MPTP/Pro-induced mice and ultimately reduces the impairment of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Notably, these effects of b-Ecd were not observed in Nrf2-KO mice. In addition, b-Ecd significantly reduced the formation of ROS and the level of MDA, blocked the increase of LPO, and partially reversed the GSH/GSSG ratio in MPTP/Pro-induced WT mice; however, these results were also not observed in MPTP/Pro-induced Nrf2-KO mice. Mechanistically, b-Ecd enhanced the expression levels of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and GCLc, but not NQO1 (NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1) and GCLm expression. Interestingly, b-Ecd failed to increase the protein and mRNA levels of HO-1 and GCLc in Nrf2-KO mice, suggesting that b-Ecd attenuates oxidative stress through an Nrf2-dependent mechanism. Furthermore, b-Ecd promoted the expressions of PI3K/Akt phosphorylation (activity) and GSK-3b phosphorylation (inactivity). Conversely, administration of b-Ecd markedly decreased Fyn phosphorylation levels. Collectively, our findings suggest that b-Ecd focuses on Nrf2 in reducing MPTP/Pro-induced oxidative stress and subsequent motor deficits by inhibiting its nuclear export through PI3K/Akt/GSK-3b/Fyn pathway regulation. These further indicate that b-Ecd may be an absorbing therapeutic agent for PD.

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the prefrontal cortex improves depression-like behaviors in rats with Parkinson's disease

Depression associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) seriously affects patients, and there is a lack of effective treatments. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is increasingly used as a new non-invasive neuromodulation technique in the treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases. However, there is a paucity of research on tDCS for PD-related depression. Our study used PD model rats established with unilateral destruction of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) to observe the modulatory effects of tDCS acting on the mPFC on depression-like behaviors. We found that tDCS acting on the mPFC improved depression-like behaviors in PD model rats by increasing sucrose intake in sucrose preference test (n = 7-10 rats/group) and shortening immobility time in forced swimming test (n = 7-8 rats/group). Meanwhile, tDCS decreased the expression of c-Fos protein (n = 8-11 rats/group) and the excitation of glutamatergic neurons (n = 6-8 rats/group) in the PrL and LHb of PD model rats. Western blots showed that tDCS decreased the overexpression of serine 845 phosphorylation site of AMPA receptor GluR1 (p-GluR1-S845) in the PrL and LHb of PD model rats (n = 8-11 rats/group), and the overexpression of p-GluR1-S831 in the LHb (n = 8-11 rats/group). The results of this study show that tDCS acting on the mPFC helps to improve PD-related depression, which involves the modulation of excitability and AMPA receptor phosphorylation on the PrL and LHb neurons.

Rational Design of S-Scheme Heterojunction toward Efficient Photocatalytic Cellulose Reforming for H2 and Formic Acid in Pure Water

Photocatalytic cellulose reforming usually requires harsh conditions due to its sluggish kinetics. Here, a hollow structural S-scheme heterojunction of ZnSe and oxygen vacancy enriched TiO2 , namely, h-ZnSe/Pt@TiO2 , is designed and fabricated, with which the photocatalytic reforming of cellulose for H2 and formic acid is realized in pure water. H2 and formic acid productivity of 1858 and 372 µmol g-1 h-1 and a steady H2 evolution for 300 h are achieved with α-cellulose. Comparable photocatalytic activity can also be achieved using various cellulose sources. It is experimentally proven that the photogenerated charge transfer follows an S-scheme mechanism, which not only promotes the charge separation but also preserves the higher reductive and oxidative abilities of the ZnSe and TiO2 , respectively. Furthermore, the polyhydroxy species produced during cellulose degradation are favored to adsorb on the oxygen vacancy enriched TiO2 surface, which promotes the photocatalytic reforming process and is accounted to the preservation of formic acid as the major solution-phase product. In addition, sequential reactions of oxidation of aldehydes and elimination of formic acid of the cellulose degradation process are revealed. This work provides a photocatalytic strategy to sustainably produce hydrogen and value-added chemicals from biomass under the most environmentally benign condition, i.e., pure water.

Simple and sensitive fluorescence sensing of methyl parathion based on the inner filter effect of p-nitrophenol on nitrogen-doped titanium carbide quantum dots

It is of great significance to develop an effective method for methyl parathion (MP) detection. Herein, a novel nitrogen-doped titanium carbide quantum dots (N-Ti3 C2 QDs) was prepared and used to construct a simple and sensitive fluorescence sensing platform of MP by making use of inner filter effect (IFE). The prepared N-Ti3 C2 QDs can exhibit strong blue fluorescence at 434 nm. Meanwhile, MP could hydrolyze to produce p-nitrophenol (p-NP) under alkaline conditions, which showed a characteristic ultraviolet-visible (UV-visible) absorption peak at 405 nm, resulting in the fluorescence of N-Ti3 C2 QDs is effectively quenched by p-NP. In addition, the investigation of time-resolved fluorescence decays indicated that the corresponding quenching mechanism of p-NP on N-Ti3 C2 QDs is due to the IFE. After optimizing the conditions, the as-developed fluorescence sensing platform displayed wide detection range (0.1-30 μg mL-1 ) and low detection limit (0.036 μg mL-1 ) for MP, and it was also successfully applied for MP analysis in real water samples, thus it is expected that this simple, sensitive and enzyme-free sensing platform shows great applications.

Synergistic Nitrogen Binding Sites in a Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient N2 /O2 Separation

Porous materials with d3 electronic configuration open metal sites have been proved to be effective adsorbents for N2 capture and N2 /O2 separation. However, the reported materials remain challenging to address the trade-off between adsorption capacity and selectivity. Herein, we report a robust MOF, MIL-102Cr, that features two binding sites, can synergistically afford strong interactions for N2 capture. The synergistic adsorption site exhibits a benchmark Qst of 45.0 kJ mol-1 for N2 among the Cr-based MOFs, a record-high volumetric N2 uptake (31.38 cm3  cm-3 ), and highest N2 /O2 selectivity (13.11) at 298 K and 1.0 bar. Breakthrough experiments reveal that MIL-102Cr can efficiently capture N2 from a 79/21 N2 /O2 mixture, providing a record 99.99 % pure O2 productivity of 0.75 mmol g-1 . In situ infrared spectroscopy and computational modelling studies revealed that a synergistic adsorption effect by open Cr(III) and fluorine sites was accountable for the strong interactions between the MOF and N2 .

Pore chemistry and geometry control in a metal azolate framework for one-step ethylene purification from quinary gas mixture

In the petrochemical industry, obtaining polymer-grade ethylene from complex light-hydrocarbon mixtures by one-step separation is important and challenging. Here, we successfully prepared the Metal-Azolate Framework 7 (MAF-7) with pore chemistry and geometry control to realize the one-step separation of ethylene from cracking gas with up to quinary gas mixtures (propane/propylene/ethane/ethylene/acetylene). Based on the tailor-made pore environment, MAF-7 exhibited better selective adsorption of propane, propylene, ethane and acetylene than ethylene, and the adsorption ratios of ethane/ethylene and propylene/ethylene are as high as 1.49 and 2.81, respectively. The pore geometry design of MAF-7 leads to the unique weak binding affinity and adsorption site for ethylene molecules, which is clearly proved by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo theoretical calculations. The breakthrough experiments show that ethylene can be directly obtained from binary, ternary, and quinary gas mixtures. These comprehensive properties show that MAF-7 is expected to achieve one-step purification of ethylene in complex light hydrocarbon mixtures.

Pioglitazone protects PC12 cells against oxidative stress injury: An in vitro study of its antiapoptotic effects via the PPARγ pathway

To the best of our knowledge, the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) in oxidative stress-induced PC12 cell damage is unknown. Using a PC12 cell model with H2O2 treatment, the present study investigated the expression levels of apoptosis-related genes and neuronal apoptosis after oxidative stress injury. The present study further investigated the protective effect and mechanism of pioglitazone, a PPARγ agonist. PC12 cells treated with H2O2 were used as a model of oxidative stress injury. An MTT assay and flow cytometry were used to detect the effect of H2O2 on PC12 cell viability and the protective effect of pioglitazone. A TUNEL assay was used to detect neuronal apoptosis. The expression levels of PPARγ, Bax, Bcl-2 and caspase-3 were examined by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting. H2O2 reduced PC12 cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner. H2O2 significantly upregulated the protein expression levels of Bax and the cleaved caspase-3/caspase-3 ratio (P<0.01), decreased the protein expression levels of Bcl-2 (P<0.01), and increased the apoptosis rate of PC12 cells. Pioglitazone significantly reduced the protein expression levels of Bax and the cleaved caspase-3/caspase-3 ratio (P<0.01), increased the expression levels of Bcl-2 (P<0.01), decreased the Bax/Bcl-2 expression ratio (P<0.01) and increased the viability of H2O2-damaged PC12 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment with the PPARγ antagonist GW9662 or PPARγ small interfering RNA counteracted the protective effect of pioglitazone on PC12 cells to different extents (P<0.01). Therefore, the present study reported the role of PPARγ in protecting PC12 cells against oxidative stress injury, which may lead to novel therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases.

Molecular scale behavior of xylan during solvent-controlled extraction and precipitation

Solvent-controlled extraction and precipitation are the most fundamental methods for obtaining hemicellulose from lignocellulosic biomass and purification processes. However, the dissolution and precipitation mechanisms involved have scarcely been mentioned. In this study, the molecular scale behavior of xylan-type hemicellulose during solvent-controlled extraction and precipitation is investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. To bring the model closer to the real extracted xylan, a high degree of polymerization (DP100) of xylan is established, and hemicelluloses with low DP (DP15 and DP50) are also investigated. Four phenomena are explained at the molecular level, including the influence of the polymerization degree and side chain on the solubility of xylan in water, the improvement of the xylan's solubility in NaOH, the precipitation of xylan in ethanol, and the acetyl group preservation of xylan in DMSO. This study contributes to an increased understanding of the dissolution and precipitation mechanisms of hemicellulose and provides a resource for the simulation of high DP hemicellulose, which gives a theoretical basis for the efficient extraction of high-purity hemicellulose as well as economic biorefining.

Charging Metal-Organic Framework Membranes by Incorporating Crown Ethers to Capture Cations for Ion Sieving

Protein channels on the biofilm conditionally manipulate ion transport via regulating the distribution of charge residues, making analogous processes on artificial membranes a hot spot and challenge. Here, we employ metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) membrane with charge-adjustable subnano-channel to selectively govern ion transport. Various valent ions are binded with crown ethers embedded in the MOF cavity, which act as charged guest to regulate the channels' charge state from the negativity to positivity. Compared with the negatively charged channel, the positive counterpart obviously enhances Li+ /Mg2+ selectivity, which benefit from the reinforcement of the electrostatic repulsion between ions and the channel. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations reveal that Mg2+ transport through the more positively charged channel needed to overcome higher entrance energy barrier than that of Li+ . This work provides a subtle strategy for ion-selective transport upon regulating the charge state of insulating membrane, which paves the way for the application like seawater desalination and lithium extraction from salt lakes.

A Customized Hydrophobic Porous Shell for MOF-5

The susceptibility to moisture of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a critical bottleneck for their wider practical application. Constructing core-shell composites has been postulated as an effective strategy for enhancing moisture resistance, but for fragile MOFs this has rarely been accomplished. We report herein, for the first time, the construction of a customized hydrophobic porous shell, NTU-COF, on the particularly fragile MOF-5 by a "Plug-Socket Anchoring" strategy. Notably, the pore structure of MOF-5 was well maintained, and it could still achieve complete CO2/N2 separation under humid conditions. The homogeneous interface between MOF-5 and NTU-COF has been inspected at atomic resolution by a combination of cryogenic focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) and ultralow-dose (scanning) transmission electron microscope giving profound insight into the mechanism of assembly of the core-shell structure. This work presents a facile strategy for the fabrication of a hydrophobic porous shell for labile MOFs, and provides a general approach for solving the problem of moisture instability of porous materials for practical applications.

Pore Modulation of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Efficient Separation of Propylene

Developing hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) that combine functional sites, size control, and storage capability for targeting gas molecule capture is a novel and challenging venture. However, there is a lack of effective strategies to tune the hydrogen-bonded network to achieve high-performance HOFs. Here, a series of HOFs termed as HOF-ZSTU-M (M=1, 2, and 3) with different pore structures are obtained by introducing structure-directing agents (SDAs) into the hydrogen-bonding network of tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP). These HOFs have distinct space configurations with pore channels ranging from discrete to continuous multi-dimensional. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis reveals a rare diversity of hydrogen-bonding models dominated by SDAs. HOF-ZSTU-2, which forms a strong layered hydrogen-bonding network with ammonium (NH4 + ) through multiple carboxyl groups, has a suitable 1D "pearl-chain" channel for the selective capture of propylene (C3 H6 ). At 298 K and 1 bar, the C3 H6 storage density of HOF-ZSTU-2 reaches 0.6 kg L-1 , representing one of the best C3 H6 storage materials, while offering a propylene/propane (C3 H6 /C3 H8 ) selectivity of 12.2. Theoretical calculations and in situ SCXRD provide a detailed analysis of the binding strength of C3 H6 at different locations in the pearl-chain channel. Dynamic breakthrough tests confirm that HOF-ZSTU-2 can effectively separate C3 H6 from multi-mixtures.

Balancing the Crystallinity and Film Formation of Metal-Organic Framework Membranes through In Situ Modulation for Efficient Gas Separation

Polycrystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) layers hold great promise as molecular sieve membranes for efficient gas separation. Nevertheless, the high crystallinity tends to cause inter-crystalline defects/cracks in the nearby crystals, which makes crystalline porous materials face a great challenge in the fabrication of defect-free membranes. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate the balance between crystallinity and film formation of MOF membrane through a facile in situ modulation strategy. Monocarboxylic acid was introduced as a modulator to regulate the crystallinity via competitive complexation and thus concomitantly control the film-forming state during membrane growth. Through adjusting the ratio of modulator acid/linker acid, an appropriate balance between this structural "trade-off" was achieved. The resulting MOF membrane with moderate crystallinity and coherent morphology exhibits molecular sieving for H2 /CO2 separation with selectivity up to 82.5.

Risky drinking and other drug use in adults with chronic conditions in the United States: differential associations by race/ethnicity

Co-use of multiple drugs may prolong or increase heavy drinking, even for individuals with health conditions adversely affected by it. Patterns of alcohol and drug use may vary across racial/ethnic groups, with differential implications for health. This study examines racial/ethnic differences in the associations between risky drinking and other drug use in adults with diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or cancer. Multiple logistic regression modeling, stratified by condition, was performed using a nationally representative sample of adults drawn from the 2015 to 2019 National Survey on Drug and Health. The outcome was risky drinking (consuming more than 7/14 drinks weekly). Other drugs considered were tobacco, marijuana, illicit drugs, and non-medical prescription drugs. Covariates included age, sex, education, income, marital/cohabitation status, health insurance coverage, and self-rated health status. Each drug category was positively associated with risky drinking across all four conditions. Racial/ethnic minority adults were less likely than White adults to engage in risky drinking, with this pattern most consistent for those with hypertension. Other drug use in minority adults (i.e. tobacco and illicit drug use in Black and Hispanic adults, and marijuana and prescription drug use in Asian adults) was associated with disproportionately greater odds of risky drinking compared with White adults. This pattern was more prominent for those with a heart condition, and not found for those with cancer. Future interventions might address co-use of alcohol and other drugs in adults with chronic conditions, with special attention to racial/ethnic minority adults.

A compact radio-frequency ion source for high brightness and low energy spread negative oxygen ion beam production

A high brightness and low energy spread (∆E) ion source is essential to the production of a high-quality primary ion beam applied in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). A compact 13.56 MHz radio-frequency (RF) ion source with an external planar spiral antenna has been developed as a candidate ion source for the production of negative oxygen ion beams for SIMS application. This ion source is designed with a three-and-a-half-turn water-cooled planar antenna for RF power coupling, a multi-cusp magnetic field for effective plasma confinement, and a three-electrode extraction system. The experimental results show that more than 50 µA negative oxygen ion beams have been extracted, which consist of 56% O-, 25% O2-, and 19% O3-. The ion energy distribution of the negative oxygen ion beam exhibits a Gaussian distribution with a minimum ∆E of 6.3 eV. The brightness of the O- beam is estimated to be 82.4 A m-2 Sr-1 V-1. The simulation, design, and experimental study results of this RF ion source will be presented in this paper.

The Relationship Between Drinking Patterns and Chronic Health Conditions: New Evidence From Two U.S. National Alcohol Surveys

OBJECTIVE

The association of many chronic disease conditions with alcohol consumption is well established, and research on drinking patterns following diagnosis suggests that those with a chronic condition drink less than their healthy counterparts. However, these studies have not controlled for confounding influences on this relationship. This article reports current drinking patterns of those with one of four chronic disease conditions (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, cancer) compared to those without, controlling for covariates.

METHOD

Data were analyzed from a merged sample of the two National Alcohol Surveys of the U.S. adult population (2014-2015 and 2019-2020; n = 9,597). Those reporting any one of the four disease conditions were matched to healthy control respondents on demographic characteristics and history of drinking using propensity score weighting (PSW).

RESULTS

Those with hypertension and heart disease appeared to drink less than controls during the last year, but after models were adjusted for covariates or PSW, no significant differences were found. For diabetes, only the PSW models showed no significant difference in drinking from controls, whereas both unadjusted and adjusted models for cancer showed no differences from controls.

CONCLUSIONS

Controlling for covariates and PSW appeared to make cases and their healthy controls more similar in past-year drinking patterns. Observed similarity in drinking patterns of those with and without a chronic disease may serve as an impetus for a greater focus on screening and identification of those with chronic conditions who would benefit from focused harm-reduction messages and implementation of effective alcohol interventions.

In Situ Construction Channels of Lithium-Ion Fast Transport and Uniform Deposition to Ensure Safe High-Performance Solid Batteries

Solid-state lithium-ion batteries (SLIBs) are the promising development direction for future power sources because of their high energy density and reliable safety. To optimize the ionic conductivity at room temperature (RT) and charge/discharge performance to obtain reusable polymer electrolytes (PEs), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) copolymer combined with polymerized methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomers are used as substrates to prepare PE (LiTFSI/OMMT/PVDF/P(VDF-HFP)/PMMA [LOPPM]). LOPPM has interconnected lithium-ion 3D network channels. The organic-modified montmorillonite (OMMT) is rich in the Lewis acid centers, which promoted lithium salt dissociation. LOPPM PE possessed high ionic conductivity of 1.1 × 10-3 S cm-1 and a lithium-ion transference number of 0.54. The capacity retention of the battery remained 100% after 100 cycles at RT and 0.5 C. The initial capacity of one with the second-recycled LOPPM PE is 123.9 mAh g-1 . This work offered a feasible pathway for developing high-performance and reusable LIBs.

Electrochemical Determination of Hazardous Herbicide Diuron Using MWCNTs-CS@NGQDs Composite-Modified Glassy Carbon Electrodes

Diuron (DU) abuse in weed removal and shipping pollution prevention always leads to pesticide residues and poses a risk to human health. In the current research, an innovative electrochemical sensor for DU detection was created using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) that had been modified with chitosan-encapsulated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-CS) combined with nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs). The NGQDs were prepared by high-temperature pyrolysis, and the MWCNTs-CS@NGQDs composite was further prepared by ultrasonic assembly. TEM, UV-Vis, and zeta potential tests were performed to investigate the morphology and properties of MWCNTs-CS@NGQDs. CV and EIS measurements revealed that the assembly of MWCNTs and CS improved the electron transfer ability and effective active area of MWCNTs. Moreover, the introduction of NGQDs further enhanced the detection sensitivity of the designed sensor. The MWCNTs-CS@NGQDs/GCE electrochemical sensor exhibited a wide linear range (0.08~12 μg mL-1), a low limit of detection (0.04 μg mL-1), and high sensitivity (31.62 μA (μg mL-1)-1 cm-2) for DU detection. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrated good anti-interference performance, reproducibility, and stability. This approach has been effectively employed to determine DU in actual samples, with recovery ranges of 99.4~104% in river water and 90.0~94.6% in soil. The developed electrochemical sensor is a useful tool to detect DU, which is expected to provide a convenient and easy analytical technique for the determination of various bioactive species.

Advances in the application of metal-organic framework nanozymes in colorimetric sensing of heavy metal ions

Nanozymes, which can be defined as nanomaterials with excellent catalytic function, are well known to the scientific community due to their distinct merits, such as low cost and high stability, which render them preferable to natural enzymes. As porous organic-inorganic coordination materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess a large number of active sites and thus can effectively mimic the properties of natural enzymes. Recently, MOF-based nanozymes have also exhibited good application potential for the analysis of heavy metal ions. In comparison to the traditional detection methods for heavy metal ions, nanozyme-based colorimetric sensing permits intuitive visual analysis by using relatively simple instruments, facilitating rapid and simple on-site screening. In this minireview, the preparation of MOF-based nanozymes and the different nanozyme activity types are briefly described, such as peroxidase-like and oxidase-like, and the relevant catalytic mechanisms are elaborated. Based on this, different response mechanisms of MOF-based colorimetric methods to heavy metal ions, such as turn-off, turn-on, and turn-off-on, are discussed. In addition, the colorimetric sensing applications of MOF-based nanozymes for the detection of heavy metal ions are summarized. Finally, the current research status of MOF-based nanozymes and the future development direction are discussed.

[Regulatory effects of the Nocardia rubra cell wall skeleton on the biological function of human neutrophils]

Objective: To investigate the regulatory effects and mechanism of Nocardia rubra cell wall skeleton (Nr-CWS) on the biological function of human neutrophils. Methods: The experimental research method was used. Fifteen healthy adult volunteers (7 males and 8 females, aged 24 to 45 years) were recruited from Suzhou Physical Examination Center for physical examination from May to October 2022, the peripheral venous blood was collected, and neutrophils were extracted by immunomagnetic bead sorting. The cells were divided into normal control group without any treatment, Nr-CWS alone group treated with Nr-CWS of final mass concentration 60 ng/mL alone, endotoxin/lipopolysaccharide (LPS) alone group stimulated with LPS of final mass concentration 1 μg/mL alone, and LPS+Nr-CWS group stimulated with LPS first and then treated with Nr-CWS as before. After 1 h of culture, the chemotaxis distance, chemotactic cell percentage, chemotactic index, maximum chemotactic speed, and chemotactic function score of neutrophils were detected using the modified agarose chemotactic model; the proportion and fluorescence intensity of phagocytosis cells, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the protein expression levels of granular protein CD35, CD66b, and CD63, and the concentrations of inflammatory cytokines of interleukin 2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interferon-γ in cell culture supernatant were detected by flow cytometry. The number of samples in each group in the above experiments was 15. Data were statistically analyzed with analysis of variance for factorial design and independent sample t test. Results: After 1 h of culture, the chemotactic function score of cells in normal control group, Nr-CWS alone group, LPS alone group, and LPS+Nr-CWS group were 15.0, 14.5±0.5, 1.5±0.5, 12.0±1.5, respectively. Compared with those in normal control group, the chemotaxis distance, chemotactic cell percentage, chemotactic index, maximum chemotactic speed, and chemotactic function score of cells were significantly decreased in LPS alone group and LPS+Nr-CWS group (with t values of 18.36, 18.88, 54.28, 18.36, 46.77, 10.58, 14.74, 6.84, 10.58, and 4.24, respectively, P<0.05); compared with those in LPS alone group, the five chemotactic function indexes as above in LPS+Nr-CWS group were significantly increased (with t values of 11.47, 14.65, 11.62, 11.47, and 13.75, respectively, P<0.05). After 1 h of culture, compared with those in normal control group, the proportion and fluorescence intensity of phagocytosis cells were significantly increased in Nr-CWS alone group (with t values of 6.86 and 6.73, respectively, P<0.05), and the above two indexes were significantly decreased in LPS alone group (with t values of 7.35 and 22.72, respectively, P<0.05) and LPS+Nr-CWS group (with t values of 21.37 and 13.10, respectively, P<0.05). After 1 h of culture, compared with that in normal control group, the level of ROS of cells in LPS alone group was significantly increased (t=6.64, P<0.05); compared with that in LPS alone group, the level of ROS of cells in LPS+Nr-CWS group was significantly decreased (t=5.46, P<0.05). After 1 h of culture, compared with those in normal control group, the protein expressions of CD35, CD66b, and CD63 of cells were significantly increased in LPS alone group and LPS+Nr-CWS group (with t values of 16.75, 17.45, 10.82, 5.70, 19.35, and 15.37, respectively, P<0.05); compared with those in LPS alone group, the protein expressions of CD35, CD66b, and CD63 of cells were significantly decreased in LPS+Nr-CWS group (with t values of 4.92, 5.72, and 3.18, respectively, P<0.05). After 1 h of culture, compared with those in normal control group, the concentrations of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, TNF-α, and interferon-γ in cell culture supernatant were significantly increased in LPS alone group (with t values of 22.10, 9.50, 7.21, 10.22, 24.88, 8.43, and 47.48, respectively, P<0.05), and the concentrations of IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, TNF-α, and interferon-γ in cell culture supernatant were significantly increased in LPS+Nr-CWS group (with t values of 4.68, 5.12, 8.02, 5.58, and 7.13, respectively, P<0.05); compared with those in LPS alone group, the concentrations of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, TNF-α, and interferon-γ in cell culture supernatant were significantly decreased in LPS+Nr-CWS group (with t values of 5.39, 2.83, 5.79, 2.90, 5.87, 4.88, and 39.64, respectively, P<0.05). Conclusions: Nr-CWS can enhance the phagocytosis ability of neutrophils in normal condition and improve the chemotactic function, ROS level, degranulation protein level, and inflammatory factor level of human neutrophils in infectious condition. Nr-CWS can enhance the anti-infection ability of human neutrophils by regulating its biological behavior in innate immunity.

Deep removal of trace C2H2 and CO2 from C2H4 by using customized potassium-exchange mordenite

Adsorptive separation using porous materials is a promising approach for separating alkynes/olefins due to its energy efficiency, while the deep removal of trace amounts of C₂H₂ and CO₂ from C₂H₄ is still very challenging for a commercial adsorbent. Herein, we report a low-cost inorganic metal cation-mediated mordenite (MOR) zeolite with the specific location and distribution of K⁺ cations acting as a goalkeeper for accurately controlling diffusion channels, as evidence of the experimental and simulation results. Deep purification of C₂H₄ from ternary CO₂/C₂H₂/C₂H₄ mixtures was first realized on K-MOR with exceptional results, achieving a remarkable polymer-grade C₂H₄ productivity of 1742 L kg^-1 for the CO₂/C₂H₂/C₂H₄ mixture. Our approach which only involves adjusting the equilibrium ions, is both promising and cost-effective, and opens up new possibilities for the use of zeolites in the industrial light hydrocarbon adsorption and purification process.

Genetic characterization and whole-genome sequencing-based genetic analysis of influenza virus in Jining City during 2021-2022

Background

The influenza virus poses a significant threat to global public health due to its high mutation rate. Continuous surveillance, development of new vaccines, and public health measures are crucial in managing and mitigating the impact of influenza outbreaks.

Methods

Nasal swabs were collected from individuals with influenza-like symptoms in Jining City during 2021-2022. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to detect influenza A viruses, followed by isolation using MDCK cells. Additionally, nucleic acid detection was performed to identify influenza A H1N1, seasonal H3N2, B/Victoria, and B/Yamagata strains. Whole-genome sequencing was conducted on 24 influenza virus strains, and subsequent analyses included characterization, phylogenetic construction, mutation analysis, and assessment of nucleotide diversity.

Results

A total of 1,543 throat swab samples were collected. The study revealed the dominance of the B/Victoria influenza virus in Jining during 2021-2022. Whole-genome sequencing showed co-prevalence of B/Victoria influenza viruses in the branches of Victoria clade 1A.3a.1 and Victoria clade 1A.3a.2, with a higher incidence observed in winter and spring. Comparative analysis demonstrated lower similarity in the HA, MP, and PB2 gene segments of the 24 sequenced influenza virus strains compared to the Northern Hemisphere vaccine strain B/Washington/02/2019. Mutations were identified in all antigenic epitopes of the HA protein at R133G, N150K, and N197D, and the 17-sequence antigenic epitopes exhibited more than 4 amino acid variation sites, resulting in antigenic drift. Moreover, one sequence had a D197N mutation in the NA protein, while seven sequences had a K338R mutation in the PA protein.

Conclusion

This study highlights the predominant presence of B/Victoria influenza strain in Jining from 2021 to 2022. The analysis also identified amino acid site variations in the antigenic epitopes, contributing to antigenic drift.

Immobilization of the Polar Group into an Ultramicroporous Metal-Organic Framework Enabling Benchmark Inverse Selective CO2/C2H2 Separation with Record C2H2 Production

One-step harvest of high-purity light hydrocarbons without the desorption process represents an advanced and highly efficient strategy for the purification of target substances. The separation and purification of acetylene (C₂H₂) from carbon dioxide (CO₂) by CO₂-selective adsorbents are urgently demanded yet are very challenging owing to their similar physicochemical properties. Here, we employ the pore chemistry strategy to adjust the pore environment by immobilizing polar groups into an ultramicroporous metal-organic framework (MOF), achieving one-step manufacture of high-purity C₂H₂ from CO₂/C₂H₂ mixtures. Embedding methyl groups into prototype stable MOF (Zn-ox-trz) not only changes the pore environment but also improves the discrimination of guest molecules. The methyl-functionalized Zn-ox-mtz thus exhibits the benchmark reverse CO₂/C₂H₂ uptake ratio of 12.6 (123.32/9.79 cm³ cm^-3) and an exceptionally high equimolar CO₂/C₂H₂ selectivity of 1064.9 at ambient conditions. Molecular simulations reveal that the synergetic effect of pore confinement and surfaces decorated with methyl groups provides high recognition of CO₂ molecules through multiple van der Waals interactions. The column breakthrough experiments suggest that Zn-ox-mtz dramatically achieved the one-step purification capacity of C₂H₂ from the CO₂/C₂H₂ mixture with a record C₂H₂ productivity of 2091 mmol kg^-1, surpassing all of the CO₂-selective adsorbents reported so far. In addition, Zn-ox-mtz exhibits excellent chemical stability under different pH values of aqueous solutions (pH = 1-12). Moreover, the highly stable framework and excellent inverse selective CO₂/C₂H₂ separation performance showcase its promising application as a C₂H₂ splitter for industrial manufacture. This work paves the way to developing reverse-selective adsorbents for the challenging gas separation process.

At-Risk Drinking in US Adults with Health Conditions: Differences by Gender, Race, and Ethnicity in the National Survey of Drug Use and Health, 2015-2019

Few studies in the US address alcohol consumption patterns in adults with chronic health conditions, and little is known about race and ethnicity differences. This study examined at-risk drinking prevalence rates among US adults with hypertension, diabetes, heart condition or cancer and assessed differences by gender and, among adults aged 50 and older, by race and ethnicity. We used data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 209,183) to estimate (1) prevalence rates and (2) multivariable logistic regression models predicting odds of at-risk drinking among adults with hypertension, diabetes, heart condition, or cancer, compared to adults with none of these conditions. To examine subgroup differences, analyses were stratified by gender (ages 18-49 and ages 50 +) and by gender and race and ethnicity for adults ages 50 + . Results showed that all adults with diabetes and women ages 50 + with heart conditions in the full sample had lower odds of at-risk drinking relative to their counterparts without any of the four conditions. Men ages 50 + with hypertension had greater odds. In race and ethnicity assessments among adults ages 50 + , only non-Hispanic White (NHW) men and women with diabetes and heart conditions had lower odds, and NHW men and women and Hispanic men with hypertension had greater odds of at-risk drinking. There were differential associations of at-risk drinking with demographic and lifestyle indicators across race and ethnicity groups. These findings underscore tailored efforts in community and clinical settings to reduce at-risk drinking in subgroups with health condition diagnoses.

Adsorbent biochar derived from corn stalk core for highly efficient removal of bisphenol A

Environmental-friendly biochar (BC) with low cost was obtained by simple pyrolysis of corn stalk core, which was employed as an adsorbent for efficiently removing organic pollutants in water. The physicochemical properties of BCs were characterized by various techniques, including X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), Raman, Thermogravimetric (TGA), N₂ adsorption-desorption and zeta potential tests. The influence of pyrolysis temperature on the structure and adsorption efficiency of the adsorbent was emphasized. The graphitization degree and sp² carbon content of BCs were enhanced by increasing the pyrolysis temperature, which was favorable for the enhancement of the adsorption efficiency. The adsorption results showed that corn stalk core calcined at 900 °C (BC-900) displayed exceptional adsorption efficiency toward bisphenol A (BPA) in wide pH (1-13) and temperature (0-90 °C) ranges. Moreover, adsorbent BC-900 could adsorb various pollutants from water, including antibiotics, organic dyes, and phenol (50 mg·L^-1). The adsorption process of BPA over BC-900 matched well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Mechanism investigation suggested that large specific surface area and pore filling acted the foremost role in the adsorption process. Adsorbent BC-900 has the potential application in wastewater treatment due to its simple preparation, low cost, and excellent adsorption efficiency.

Gold nanocluster-confined covalent organic frameworks as bifunctional probes for electrochemiluminescence and colorimetric dual-response sensing of Pb2

The development of bifunctional signal probes based on a single component is highly desirable for sensitive and simple dual-mode detection of Pb²⁺. Here, novel gold nanocluster-confined covalent organic frameworks (AuNCs@COFs) were fabricated as a bisignal generator to enable electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and colorimetric dual-response sensing. AuNCs with both intrinsic ECL and peroxidase-like activity were confined into the ultrasmall pores of the COFs via an in situ growth method. On the one hand, the space-confinement effect of the COFs closed the ligand motion-induced nonradiative transition channels of the AuNCs. As a result, the AuNCs@COFs exhibited a 3.3-fold enhancement in anodic ECL efficiency compared to the solid-state aggregated AuNCs using triethylamine as the coreactant. On the other hand, due to the outstanding spatial dispersibility of the AuNCs in the structurally ordered COFs, a high density of active catalytic sites and accelerated electron transfer were obtained, leading to the promotion of the enzyme-like catalytic capacity of the composite. To validate its practical applicability, a Pb²⁺-triggered dual-response sensing system was proposed based on the aptamer-regulated ECL and peroxidase-like activity of the AuNCs@COFs. Sensitive determinations down to 7.9 pM for the ECL mode and 0.56 nM for the colorimetric mode were obtained. This work provides an approach for designing single element-based bifunctional signal probes for dual-mode detection of Pb²⁺.

Association of polymorphisms of calcium reabsorption genes SLC12A1, KCNJ1 and SLC8A1 with colorectal adenoma

BACKGROUND

In recent years, morbidity and mortality from colorectal cancer have increased. Colorectal adenoma is the main precancerous lesion. Understanding the pathogenesis of colorectal adenoma will help to improve the early diagnosis rate of colorectal cancer.

METHODS

In this case-control study, we focused on three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes SLC8A1 (rs4952490), KCNJ1 (rs2855798), and SLC12A1 (rs1531916). We analyzed 207 colorectal adenoma patients (112 high-risk cases and 95 low-risk cases) and 212 control subjects by Sanger sequencing. A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to survey demographic characteristics and dietary nutrition.

RESULTS

In the overall analysis, the results suggested that the AA+AG and AG genotype carriers of rs4952490 had a 73.1% and 78% lower risk of colorectal adenoma compared to GG genotype carriers, respectively. However rs2855798 and rs1531916 were not associated with the incidence of colorectal adenoma. Additionally, stratified analysis showed that rs4952490 AA+AG and AG genotypes had a protective effect against low-risk colorectal adenoma in patients aged ≤ 60 years old who were non-smokers. We also observed that when calcium intake was higher than 616 mg/d and patients carried at least one gene with variant alleles there was a protective effect against low-risk colorectal adenoma.

CONCLUSIONS

Interactions between dietary calcium intake and calcium reabsorption genes may affect the occurrence and development of colorectal adenoma.

Efficacy of Flumatinib in CML Patients with F359V/C Mutation

The BCR-ABL mutation is the main cause of tyrosine kinase inhibitors(TKI) resistance. The second-generation TKI can overcome most of the mutations. However, both dasatinib and nilotinib have a unique set of mutants with reduced sensitivity. All TKIs are associated with adverse events, which lead to treatment discontinuation and affect the quality of life of patients. Flumatinib showed higher activity against BCR-ABL mutants in vitro. Drug-related adverse events of flumatinib were mainly grade 1 or grade 2 events. There is no study that reported the efficacy of flumatinib against F359V/C mutation.We report two cases of chronic myelocytic leukemia(CML) patients with F359V/C mutation resistance to Imatinib therapy. One patient with F359V mutation was shifted to Dasatinib. Repeated massive pleural effusion and anemia occurred after Dasatinib treatment, forcing drug dosage reduction or withdrawal, affecting drug efficacy and quality of life of patient. Two patients were shifted to Flumatinib. MR4 was achieved and F359V/C mutation was not detected after treatment with Flumatinib. There was no significant side effect. The patients had a high quality of life. Flumatinib is effective against F359V/C mutation, has less drugrelated adverse reactions. Flumatinib may be a better choice for patients with F359V/C mutation.

Construction of Fluorinated Propane-Trap in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Record Polymer-Grade Propylene Production under High Humidity Conditions

Propane/propene (C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ ) separation is essential in the petrochemical industry but challenging because of their similar physical and chemical properties. Adsorptive separation with C₃ H₈ -selective porous materials can energy-efficiently produce high-purity C₃ H₆ , which is highly promising for replacing conventional cryogenic distillation but suffers from unsatisfactory performance. Herein, through the precise incorporation of fluorinated functional groups into the confined pore space, a new fluorinated metal-organic framework (FDMOF-2) featuring the unique and strong C₃ H₈ -trap is successfully constructed. FDMOF-2 exhibits an unprecedented C₃ H₈ capture capacity of 140 cm³ cm^-3 and excellent C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ (1:1, v/v) selectivity up to 2.18 (298 K and 1 bar), thus setting new benchmarks for all reported porous materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the tailored pore confinement in FDMOF-2 provides stronger and multiple attractive interactions with C₃ H₈ , enabling excellent binding affinities. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that C₃ H₈ can be directly extracted from various C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ mixtures with FDMOF-2, affording an outstanding C₃ H₆ production (501 mmol L^-1 ) with over 99.99% purity. Benefiting from the robust framework and hydrophobic ligands, the separation performance of FDMOF-2 can be well maintained even under 70% relative humidity conditions.

Associations between early childhood adversity and behavioral, substance use, and academic outcomes in childhood through adolescence in a U.S. longitudinal cohort

BACKGROUND

Childhood adversity is strongly associated with adolescent substance use, but few epidemiologic studies have investigated early childhood adversity (ECA) before age 5. This study investigated pathways by which ECA is associated with adolescent alcohol and cannabis use and high school completion through childhood behavioral and academic mediators and their reciprocal effects.

METHODS

Data were from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979-Child/Young Adult Cohort which surveyed children born 1984-1999 and followed through 2016 (n = 5521). Outcomes included alcohol and cannabis use frequency at ages 15-18, and high school completion by age 19. ECA at ages 0-4 was a cumulative score of maternal heavy drinking/drug use, low emotional support, low cognitive stimulation, and household poverty. Multilevel path models were conducted with ECA, childhood mediators (behavioral (externalizing and internalizing problems) and academics (reading and math scores), accounting for demographics and confounders.

RESULTS

ECA was indirectly associated with adolescent cannabis frequency through mediators of externalizing/internalizing problems, low academics, and early cannabis onset before age 14. ECA was also indirectly associated with alcohol frequency via the same mediators, but not early alcohol onset. Greater behavioral problems elevated substance use risk; whereas, low academics reduced risk. Reciprocal effects were evident between childhood behavioral problems and cannabis frequency to high school completion.

CONCLUSION

Adversity from birth to age 4 is associated with childhood behavioral problems and lower academics, which increased adolescent alcohol and cannabis use and lowered high school completion. Early childhood interventions with parents and preschools/daycare may reduce early onset and adolescent substance use.

High Intensity Drinking (HID) Assessed by Maximum Quantity Consumed Is an Important Pattern Measure Adding Predictive Value in Higher and Lower Income Societies for Modeling Alcohol-Related Problems

Adjusting for demographics and standard drinking measures, High Intensity Drinking (HID), indexed by the maximum quantity consumed in a single day in the past 12 months, may be valuable in predicting alcohol dependence other harms across high and low income societies. The data consisted of 17 surveys of adult (15,460 current drinkers; 71% of total surveyed) in Europe (3), the Americas (8), Africa (2), and Asia/Australia (4). Gender-disaggregated country analyses used Poison regression to investigate whether HID (8-11, 12-23, 24+ drinks) was incrementally influential, beyond log drinking volume and HED (Heavy Episodic Drinking, or 5+ days), in predicting drinking problems, adjusting for age and marital status. In adjusted models predicting AUDIT-5 for men, adding HID improved the overall model fit for 11 of 15 countries. For women, 12 of 14 countries with available data showed an improved fit with HID included. The results for the five Life-Area Harms were similar for men. Considering the results by gender, each country showing improvements in model fit by adding HID had larger values of the average difference between high intensity and usual consumption, implying variations in amounts consumed on any given day. The amount consumed/day often greatly exceeded HED levels. In many societies of varying income levels, as hypothesized, HID provided important added information on drinking patterns for predicting harms, beyond the standard volume and binging indicators.

Highly Fluorescent Magnetic ATT-AuNCs@ZIF-8 for All-in-One Detection and Removal of Hg2+: An Ultrasensitive Probe to Evaluate Its Removal Efficiency

The development of multifunctional materials for the synchronous detection and removal of mercury ions (Hg²⁺) is in high demand. Although a few multifunctional materials as a fluorescent indicator and adsorbent have achieved this aim, the feedback of their removal efficiency still depends on other methods. Herein, magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (MNPs) and 6-aza-2-thiothymine-protected gold nanoclusters (ATT-AuNCs) were rationally assembled into a zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) structure via a one-pot method. The coordination assembly of ATT-AuNCs and ZIF-8 not only strengthened the aurophilic interactions of adjacent ATT-AuNCs but also induced the restriction of intramolecular motion of ATT with a six-membered heterocyclic structure. As a consequence, the fluorescence (FL) quantum yield of MNPs/ATT-AuNCs@ZIF-8 was 12.5-fold higher than that of pristine ATT-AuNCs. Benefiting from the enhanced FL emission, MNPs/ATT-AuNCs@ZIF-8 showed improved sensitivity for Hg²⁺ detection and therefore could evaluate the removal efficiency via FL detection, without relying on another detection method. Additionally, the nanocomposite also displayed a satisfactory removal capability for Hg²⁺, including a short capture time (20 min), a high removal efficiency (>96.9%), and excellent reusability (10 cycles). This work provides an approach for customizing functional nanocomposites to concurrently detect and remove Hg²⁺ with superior performance, especially for high detection sensitivity.

Dual-quenching effects of methylene blue on the luminophore and co-reactant: Application for electrochemiluminescent-electrochemical ratiometric zearalenone detection

Methylene blue (MB) is a common multifunctional indicator, which can be applied as a quencher for electrochemiluminescence (ECL) analysis as well as a classical redox probe. Although it is relatively prevalent for MB to study the mechanism with Ru-based luminophores in ECL systems, there are few studies on the effects between MB and co-reactants. In this work, we proposed the first investigation of MB on the luminophore and co-reactant of the self-enhanced ECL composites (nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots on Ru(bpy)₃²⁺-doped silica nanoparticles, NGQDs-Ru@SiO₂), respectively. The relatively narrow ECL spectrum of luminophore (Ru@SiO₂) and the suitable ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum of MB led to the ECL resonance energy transfer between them, meanwhile the appropriate energy levels among them facilitated the electron transfer, resulting in a decreased ECL signal (quench mode I). Additionally, the co-reactant (NGQDs) was prone to π-π conjugation with MB due to its abundant π-electrons, which reduced the concentration of NGQDs' intermediates and triggered a weakened ECL signal (quench mode II). Therefore, the dual-quenching effects are ingeniously integrated and designed in one ECL-electrochemical (ECL-EC) ratiometric aptasensor for zearalenone detection, for demonstrating its efficacy in enhancing the sensitivity, which is 4.8-fold higher than Ru@SiO₂ alone. This innovative ratiometric aptasensor achieved a relatively wide linear range from 1.0 × 10^-15 to 5.0 × 10^-8 g mL^-1, and obtained a low detection limit of 8.5 × 10^-16 g mL^-1. Our proposed dual-quenching interactions between MB and NGQDs-Ru@SiO₂ will open a new prospective for ECL-EC ratiometric aptasensor, which further broaden the application in sensitive and precise analysis of mycotoxins.

Dose and time-dependence of acute intermittent theta-burst stimulation on hippocampus-dependent memory in parkinsonian rats

Background

The treatment options for cognitive impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD) are limited. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation has been applied in various neurological diseases. However, the effect of intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) as a more developed repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation paradigm on cognitive dysfunction in PD remains largely unclear.

Objective

Our aim was to explore the effect of acute iTBS on hippocampus-dependent memory in PD and the mechanism underlying it.

Methods

Different blocks of iTBS protocols were applied to unilateral 6-hydroxidopamine-induced parkinsonian rats followed by the behavioral, electrophysiological and immunohistochemical analyses. The object-place recognition and hole-board test were used to assess hippocampus-dependent memory.

Results

Sham-iTBS and 1 block-iTBS (300 stimuli) didn't alter hippocampus-dependent memory, hippocampal theta rhythm and the density of c-Fos- and parvalbumin-positive neurons in the hippocampus and medial septum. 3 block-iTBS (900 stimuli) alleviated 6-hydroxidopamine-induced memory impairments, and increased the density of hippocampal c-Fos-positive neurons at 80 min post-stimulation but not 30 min compared to sham-iTBS. Interestingly, 3 block-iTBS first decreased and then increased normalized theta power during a period of 2 h following stimulation. Moreover, 3 block-iTBS decreased the density of parvalbumin-positive neurons in the medial septum at 30 min post-stimulation compared to sham-iTBS.

Conclusion

The results indicate that multiple blocks of iTBS elicit dose and time-dependent effects on hippocampus-dependent memory in PD, which may be attributed to changes in c-Fos expression and the power of theta rhythm in the hippocampus.

Changes in sugar-sweetened beverage consumption in the first two years (2018 - 2020) of San Francisco's tax: A prospective longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

Sugar sweetened beverage (SSB) taxes are a promising strategy to decrease SSB consumption, and their inequitable health impacts, while raising revenue to meet social objectives. In 2016, San Francisco passed a one cent per ounce tax on SSBs. This study compared SSB consumption in San Francisco to that in San José, before and after tax implementation in 2018.

METHODS & FINDINGS

A longitudinal panel of adults (n = 1,443) was surveyed from zip codes in San Francisco and San José, CA with higher densities of Black and Latino residents, racial/ethnic groups with higher SSB consumption in California. SSB consumption was measured at baseline (11/17-1/18), one- (11/18-1/19), and two-years (11/19-1/20) after the SSB tax was implemented in January 2018. Average daily SSB consumption (in ounces) was ascertained using the BevQ-15 instrument and modeled as both continuous and binary (high consumption: ≥6 oz (178 ml) versus low consumption: <6 oz) daily beverage intake measures. Weighted generalized linear models (GLMs) estimated difference-in-differences of SSB consumption between cities by including variables for year, city, and their interaction, adjusting for demographics and sampling source. In San Francisco, average SSB consumption in the sample declined by 34.1% (-3.68 oz, p = 0.004) from baseline to 2 years post-tax, versus San José which declined 16.5% by 2 years post-tax (-1.29 oz, p = 0.157), a non-significant difference-in-differences (-17.6%, adjusted AMR = 0.79, p = 0.224). The probability of high SSB intake in San Francisco declined significantly more than in San José from baseline to 2-years post-tax (AOR[interaction] = 0.49, p = 0.031). The difference-in-differences of odds of high consumption, examining the interaction between cities, time and poverty, was far greater (AOR[city*year 2*federal poverty level] = 0.12, p = 0.010) among those living below 200% of the federal poverty level 2-years post-tax.

CONCLUSIONS

Average SSB intake declined significantly in San Francisco post-tax, but the difference in differences between cities over time did not vary significantly. Likelihood of high SSB intake declined significantly more in San Francisco by year 2 and more so among low-income respondents.
