Abstract
Amines to an end – homogeneous ruthenium catalysts based on mixed donor P–N ligands with a range of amine auxiliaries are highly productive for CO2 reduction to methanol, the nature of this amine having a profound effect on performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite extensive research into the treatment of partial-thickness burns, to date there has not been the emergence of a preeminent modality. This pilot study, the first such study to be performed in a burn unit in the US, was designed to evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of the application of copolymer dressing (Suprathel; PolyMedics Innovations Corporation, Stuttgart, Germany) for both superficial and deeper partial-thickness burns. METHOD The copolymer dressing was used as a primary wound dressing to treat superficial and deep partial-thickness burns (average 5% total body surface area) in paediatric patients. Burns were debrided within 24 hours, at bedside, in the burn unit or in the operating room. The copolymer dressing was then applied directly to the wound and covered with a non-adherent second layer and an absorptive outer dressing. After discharge, patients were seen every 5-7 days until healed. Parameters evaluated included average hospital length of stay, average number of intravenous doses of narcotics administered, pain score at first follow-up visit, average time to complete re epithelialisation, incidence of burn wound infection, and patient/parent satisfaction on a 4-point scale. We also evaluated our experience with the dressing. Data were evaluated retrospectively under an Investigational Review Board approved protocol. RESULTS Of the 17 patients assessed the average hospital length of stay was 1.4 days during which the average number of intravenous narcotic doses administered before copolymer dressing application was 1.5 and after was 0.1 doses. At the first follow-up visit, average pain score was 1.2 on a 10-point scale and the average time to re epithelialisation was 9.5 days. There was no incidence of burn wound infection. Patient/parent satisfaction was average of 3.66 on a 4-point scale. The staff had found that the self-adherence and elasticity of the dressing made it easy to apply and stay adherent, especially in areas of difficult contour. There were no readmissions for further debridement or skin grafting. CONCLUSION Our experience shows that patients may be discharged shortly after the application of the copolymer dressing, with manageable pain scores and ease of use as determined by the caretakers high satisfaction. This new, fully synthetic copolymer dressing is easy to apply, does not require any additional antimicrobial coverage and may be used to successfully manage deeper partial-thickness burns, donor sites or burns in areas of contour, where many other dressings might not be considered or be appropriate. Abstract
Results are presented from a study of the distribution of heavy metals in street dusts of two cities in Midland England. The first (Birmingham) is a large urban area (population of 2.3 million), the second, Coventry, a small one (population of 0.3 million). Several trends were identified from Birmingham: higher concentrations were located near industrial areas in the northwest of the city and within the ring road. However, lower concentrations were found to the southwest in areas of mainly residential properties and parks. High values were also identified in association with junctions controlled by traffic lights where vehicles were likely to stop regularly. This last trend was further investigated in Coventry, where it was found that concentrations of heavy metals at junctions controlled by traffic signals and by pedestrian-controlled pelican lights (Mounted Pelican Controller, MPCs) were lower than those found in Birmingham, apart from Ni.

Abstract
To stimulate the dorsolateral frontal cortex, 12 healthy, adult, human females played contract bridge for 1.5 h between initial and final blood sample collections. Flow cytometric analyses of samples, performed in triplicate, showed a significant increase in CD4-positive T lymphocytes. The dorsolateral frontal cortical thickness is significantly and bilaterally reduced in immune-incompetent female, nude mice. Thymic transplants reverse the deficient cortical thickness and CD4-positive cell numbers.

Abstract
The cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and related genera is unique among prokaryotes, consisting of a covalently bound complex of mycolic acids, D-arabinan and D-galactan, which is linked to peptidoglycan via a special linkage unit consisting of Rhap-(1-->3)-GlcNAc-P. Information concerning the biosynthesis of this entire polymer is now emerging with the promise of new drug targets against tuberculosis. Accordingly, we have developed a galactosyltransferase assay that utilizes the disaccharide neoglycolipid acceptors beta-d-Galf-(1-->5)-beta-D-Galf-O-C(10:1) and beta-D-Galf-(1-->6)-beta-D-Galf-O-C(10:1), with UDP-Gal in conjunction with isolated membranes. Chemical analysis of the subsequent reaction products established that the enzymatically synthesized products contained both beta-D-Galf linkages ((1-->5) and (1-->6)) found within the mycobacterial cell, as well as in an alternating (1-->5) and (1-->6) fashion consistent with the established structure of the cell wall. Furthermore, through a detailed examination of the M. tuberculosis genome, we have shown that the gene product of Rv3808c, now termed glfT, is a novel UDP-galactofuranosyltransferase. This enzyme possesses dual functionality in performing both (1-->5) and (1-->6) galactofuranosyltransferase reactions with the above neoglycolipid acceptors, using membranes isolated from the heterologous host Escherichia coli expressing Rv3808c. Thus, at a biochemical and genetic level, the polymerization of the galactan region of the mycolyl-arabinogalactan complex has been defined, allowing the possibility of further studies toward substrate recognition and catalysis and assay development. Ultimately, this may also lead to a more rational approach to drug design to be explored in the context of mycobacterial infections.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the ability of the Medical Technology and Innovations (MTI), Inc., Photoscreener (Cedar Falls, IA) to detect hyperopia and to improve the photograph grading criteria to screen for amblyopiogenic levels of hyperopia. DESIGN Cross-sectional study and reanalysis. PARTICIPANTS AND TESTING: In previous work, 392 participants received a complete ophthalmologic examination and were photographed using the MTI Photoscreener. For this study, all 209 participants with normal examination findings (65 children) or hyperopia without anisometropia (144 children) were selected. The data were reanalyzed using modified photograph grading and ophthalmologic examination failure criteria. Potential reasons for why many children with hyperopia passed photoscreening were explored. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES We determined whether a study participant would pass or fail screening with a given photograph grading and ophthalmologic examination failure criteria. RESULTS Most children with hyperopia of +2.00 to +3.50 diopters (D) passed screening with the MTI instrument, in most cases because their photographs lacked bright crescents. When bright crescents in at least two of the four possible meridians were the grading guideline for screening failure and the pediatric ophthalmologists' consensus hyperopia failure criteria (> +3.50 D) were adopted, the sensitivity for hyperopia detection was 100% and the specificity was 88%. Identical results were obtained using the American Academy of Ophthalmology Preferred Practice Pattern hyperopia failure criteria (>/= +4.50 D). CONCLUSIONS The MTI photograph grading guidelines can be simplified, and the ophthalmologic examination failure criteria for hyperopia can be improved. The presence of a bright crescent in the lower or the left pupillary margin indicate hyperopia in an amblyopiogenic range (> +3.50 D).

Abstract
T560, a mouse B lymphoma that originated in gut-associated lymphoid tissue, expresses receptors that bind dimeric IgA and IgM in a mutually inhibitory manner but have little affinity for monomeric IgA. Evidence presented in this paper indicates that the receptor is poly-Ig receptor (pIgR) known in humans and domestic cattle to bind both IgA and IgM. The evidence includes the demonstration that binding of IgM is J chain dependent, and that pIg-precipitated receptor has an appropriate Mr of 116-120 kDa and can be detected on immunoblots with specific rabbit anti-mouse pIgR. Overlapping RT-PCR performed using template mRNA from T560 cells and oligonucleotide primer pairs designed from the published sequence of mouse liver pIgR indicate that T560 cells express mRNA virtually identical with that of the epithelial cell pIgR throughout its external, transmembrane, and intracytoplasmic coding regions. Studies using mutant IgAs suggest that the Calpha2 domain of dimeric IgA is not involved in high-affinity binding to the T560 pIgR. Inasmuch as this mouse B cell pIgR binds IgM better than IgA, it is similar to human pIgR and differs from rat, mouse, and rabbit epithelial cell pIgRs that bind IgA but not IgM. Possible explanations for this difference are discussed. All clones of T560 contain some cells that spontaneously secrete both IgG2a and IgA, but all of the IgA recoverable from the medium and from cell lysates is monomeric; it cannot be converted to secretory IgA by T560 cells.

Abstract
In bacteria, extracellular signals are generally transduced into cellular responses via a two-component system. However, genome sequence data have now revealed the presence of 'eukaryotic-like' protein kinases and phosphatases. Mycobacterium tuberculosis appears to be unique among bacteria in that its genome contains 11 members of a newly identified protein kinase family. These M. tuberculosis eukaryotic-like protein kinases could be key regulators of metabolic processes, including transcription, cell development and interactions with host cells.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to isolate, enumerate and attempt the identification of fetal cells recovered from the lower uterine pole. Immediately before elective termination of pregnancy at 7-17 weeks gestation, samples were recovered by transcervical flushing of the lower uterine pole (n = 108) or transcervical aspiration of mucus from just above the internal os (n = 187), and their contents examined using histological, immunohistochemical and molecular techniques. Syncytiotrophoblasts were identified morphologically in 28 out of 89 (31%) and 50 out of 180 (28%) flushings and aspirates respectively (mean 29%). Immunocytochemistry with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) recognizing trophoblast or epithelial cell antigens on a smaller number of samples (n = 69) identified putative placental cells in 13 out of 19 (68%) and 25 out of 50 (50%) flushings and aspirates respectively (mean 55%). These included groups of distinctive cells with a small, round, hyperchromatic nucleus, strongly reactive with mAbs PLAP, NDOG1 and FT1.41.1. Smaller groups of larger, amorphous cells, usually containing multiple large, pale staining nuclei, reactive with mAb 340 and to a lesser degree with mAb NDOG5 were also observed. Taking cellular morphology and immunophenotype into consideration, the smaller uninucleate cells were likely to be villous mesenchymal cells, while the larger cells were possibly degrading villous syncytiotrophoblast. There was no significant difference in the frequency of fetal cells obtained by the two recovery methods. Squamous or columnar epithelial cells, labelled strongly with antibodies to cytokeratins or human milk fat globule protein, were observed in 97% (29 out of 30) of aspirates. The use of cervagem in a small number of patients prior to termination of pregnancy did not appear to influence the subsequent recovery of placental cells. Y-specific DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 13 out of 26 (50%) flushings and (99 out of 154) 64% aspirates analysed (mean 62%). In-situ hybridization (ISH) revealed Y-specific targets in 40 out of 69 (60%) of aspirates analysed. A comparison of PCR data obtained from transcervical recovered samples and placental tissues showed a concordance of 80% (76 out of 95), with 10 false positives. Comparing the PCR data from tissues with data derived by ISH from 41 aspirates gave a concordance of 90% with two false positives. Although syncytiotrophoblasts were much more likely to be present in samples containing immunoreactive placental cells, the detection rates of fetal-derived DNA were similar regardless of the morphological and/or immunological presence of placental cells. We conclude that the transcervical recovery of fetal cells, while promising, requires considerable additional effort being expended in further research and development, particular in the sampling procedure.

Abstract
Arylamine N-acetyltransferases (NATs) are found in many eukaryotic organisms, including humans, and have previously been identified in the prokaryote Salmonella typhimurium. NATs from many sources acetylate the antitubercular drug isoniazid and so inactivate it. nat genes were cloned from Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and expressed in Escherichia coli and M. smegmatis. The induced M. smegmatis NAT catalyzes the acetylation of isoniazid. A monospecific antiserum raised against pure NAT from S. typhimurium recognizes NAT from M. smegmatis and cross-reacts with recombinant NAT from M. tuberculosis. Overexpression of mycobacterial nat genes in E. coli results in predominantly insoluble recombinant protein; however, with M. smegmatis as the host using the vector pACE-1, NAT proteins from M. tuberculosis and M. smegmatis are soluble. M. smegmatis transformants induced to express the M. tuberculosis nat gene in culture demonstrated a threefold higher resistance to isoniazid. We propose that NAT in mycobacteria could have a role in acetylating, and hence inactivating, isoniazid.

Abstract
We present here the first in vivo optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of human dental tissue. A novel dental optical coherence tomography system has been developed. This system incorporates the interferometer sample arm and transverse scanning optics into a handpiece that can be used intraorally to image human dental tissues. The average imaging depth of this system varied from 3 mm in hard tissues to 1.5 mm in soft tissues. We discuss the application of this imaging system for dentistry and illustrate the potential of our dental OCT system for diagnosis of periodontal disease, detection of caries, and evaluation of dental restorations.

Abstract
Mutation to ciprofloxacin resistance continually occurred in nondividing Escherichia coli cells during a 7-day exposure to ciprofloxacin in agar, while no accumulation of rifampin resistance mutations was detected in those cells. We propose that the resistance mutations result from adaptive mutations, which preferentially produce phenotypes that promote growth in nondividing cells.

Abstract
Escherichia coli JRG582 is an ampD ampE deletion derivative of strain HfrH and accordingly it is derepressed for expression of the cloned inducible beta-lactamase gene of Citrobacter freundii, carried on plasmid pNU305. Following chemical mutagenesis of JRG582(pNU305) a cefotaxime sensitive mutant was isolated, CS51(pNU305), which produced low levels of beta-lactamase due to a mutation in the host chromosome. Two recombinant plasmids containing genomic DNA from E. coli HfrH, namely pUB5608 and pUB5611, were isolated as a consequence of their ability to restore the beta-lactam resistant phenotype to CS51(pNU305). This ability was due to direct transcriptional activation of the beta-lactamase gene, ampC, rather than complementation of the CS51 mutation. Transposon mutagenesis and subcloning showed that restoration of ampicillin resistance to CS51(pNU305) was the function of a single gene, which maps at 60.3 min on the E. coli chromosome. The gene encodes a 33 kDa protein with significant homology to members of the LysR family of bacterial activator proteins, in particular the AmpR protein from C. freundii. Homology is especially strong over the N-terminal region which includes the helix-turn-helix DNA-binding motif. This gene was shown to complement the gcvA1 mutation at 60.3 min on the E. coli chromosome, and the DNA sequence agrees exactly with the published sequence of gcvA which encodes the transcriptional activator of the inducible glycine cleavage enzyme system. It is suggested that GcvA can activate transcription of ampC by binding to the AmpR binding region upstream of ampC so as to mimic the activated state of AmpR and hence provides an example of cross-talk between DNA-binding proteins of different inducible enzyme systems.

Abstract
The rate of delayed consecutive exotropia after bilateral 7-millimeter medial rectus recession for large angle congenital esotropia in 88 patients was 27% (24/88), larger than previously reported. The rate was 38% (8/21) in infants having surgery prior to 7 months of age, 20% (10/49) in infants undergoing surgery at 7 to 12 months of age, and 33% (6/18) in patients undergoing surgery at 13 months of age or later. The onset of consecutive exotropia averaged 26.8 months postoperatively, allowing a long period of good alignment for binocular vision to develop before exotropia surgery was required. Physicians and parents should be aware that delayed consecutive exotropia may develop several years postoperatively. Since delayed consecutive exotropia may be characteristic of the 7-millimeter recession procedure or characteristic of all patients who have had surgery for congenital esotropia, a prospective long-term study to compare the 7-millimeter procedure with the three- and four-muscle procedure would be helpful.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate whether very early treatment for congenital unilateral cataract results in better long-term functional outcomes, grating acuity, contrast sensitivity, recognition acuity, and random-dot stereoacuity were evaluated in two groups of children. METHODS Grating acuity and contrast sensitivity data were obtained with standard forced-choice protocols. Stereoacuity data were obtained both in a forced-choice laboratory protocol and by the Randot test. RESULTS Immediately after treatment, both the very early (1 to 6 weeks; n = 8) and early (2 to 8 months; n = 6) treatment groups showed a 0.3 log unit grating acuity deficit in the aphakic eye. Grating acuity in the early group showed some improvement with age but reached a plateau of 0.75 logMAR at 18 to 24 months; the very early group showed more improvement and reached a plateau of 0.22 logMAR at 37 to 48 months. At 5 to 8 years of age, aphakic eyes of the very early group had significantly better contrast sensitivity and recognition acuity than the aphakic eyes of the early group. Overall, grating acuity deficits during years 2 through 5 were significantly correlated with contrast sensitivity and recognition acuity outcomes measured at 5 to 8 years of age. No deficits in grating acuity, contrast sensitivity, or recognition acuity were found for phakic fellow eyes in either group. Three children in the very early treatment group (37.5%) were orthotropic and demonstrated gross random-dot stereopsis; one child in the early group was orthotropic but none of these children demonstrated random-dot stereopsis. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that treatment initiated at 1 to 6 weeks of age maximizes the opportunity for normal or near-normal visual development of a congenitally cataractous eye with little or no risk to the phakic fellow eye.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A patient's ability to control an intermittent exotropic deviation is usually assessed by subjective means such as observation of control in the office, questioning the patient and/or family about control at home, and reports of monocular eye closure in bright light. An objective method of assessing control has not been developed. PURPOSE The purposes of this study are to determine if distance stereoacuity was different in patients with intermittent exotropia than in normal subjects and to determine if distance stereoacuity could be used as a objective means of assessing control in intermittent exotropia. METHODS The authors evaluated near and distance stereoacuity in 44 patients with intermittent exotropia and 50 normal subjects. Patients with intermittent exotropia also were assessed for office control, home control, and monocular eye closure in bright light. Additionally, six patients who underwent successful surgery were reevaluated postoperatively. CONCLUSION Normal subjects and patients with intermittent exotropia had good near stereoacuity. Patients with intermittent exotropia demonstrated significantly worse distance stereoacuity than the population of normal subjects (P < 0.001). Five of six patients with poor distance stereoacuity preoperatively had dramatic improvement in distance stereoacuity postoperatively. Diminished distance stereoacuity seems to be an objective measure of poor control of the exotropic deviation. This test may provide important objective criteria for deciding when to perform surgery in patients with intermittent exotropia.

Abstract
The goal of the present study was to determine whether dietary supply of omega-3 essential fatty acid (EFA) influences visual development in healthy pre-term and full-term infants. Visual status was examined in human milk-fed infants (ample dietary omega-3 EFA supply) and corn oil-based formula-fed infants (no dietary omega-3 EFA; standard formula prior to 1987). At 57 weeks postconception (4 months adjusted age), both pre-term and full-term human milk-fed infants had significantly better visual evoked potential (VEP) and forced-choice preferential-looking (FPL) acuity than formula-fed infants. Acuity was correlated with a dietary omega-3 sufficiency index from red blood cell membranes obtained at 57 weeks postconception. At 36 months, full-term human milk-fed children had significantly better random dot stereo acuity and letter matching ability than formula-fed children. Stereo acuity and performance on the letter matching test were correlated with a dietary omega-3 sufficiency index from red blood cell membranes obtained at 4 months. These results suggest that dietary omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in visual development.

Abstract
The AO-HRR pseudoisochromatic plates are commonly used for color vision testing in pediatric ophthalmology; however, the recommended procedure for obtaining proper illumination (a completely darkened room and standard illuminant) is typically not followed. To evaluate the role of the illuminant in clinical testing with the AO-HRR, 132 children, ages 3 to 16 years, were tested with and without the recommended illuminant (MacBeth Easel Lamp) and with the self-illuminated APT-5 Color Vision Tester. Twenty-two failed the AO-HRR with the recommended illuminant; 28 failed the AO-HRR without the illuminant. Only 13 failed the APT-5. The Cochran Q test for three related samples showed that the differences among the three groups were significant (Q = 17.1, P < .001). Diagnostic evaluation following clinical screening indicated that the differences among the tests were primarily due to false alarms, which were greatest without the recommended illuminant and least with the APT-5. These results demonstrate the importance of controlled illumination in color vision testing, either by using the recommended illumination with the AO-HRR or a self-illuminated test such as the APT-5.

Abstract
A synthetic chimeric IL-2/IL-6 gene was synthesized to engineer a bifunctional lymphokine which was overproduced in Escherichia coli. Following denaturation of the inclusion bodies in 6 M guanidine and refolding and reoxidation in the presence of a redox system, the fusion protein (rIL-2/IL-6) was purified to homogeneity and shown to react with both monospecific anti-IL-2 and anti-IL-6 antisera. A collagen-like spacer was introduced between the two cytokine moieties to generate IL-2 and IL-6 molecules upon collagenase digestion. After cleavage, the two subunits, purified in a single-step procedure, were found to be correctly reoxidized and functionally as active as their native counterparts. Circular dichroism studies of rIL-2/IL-6 revealed that both cytokine subunits refolded independently and exhibited the alpha-helical structures characteristic of the corresponding wild-type lymphokines. The chimera displayed full IL-2 activity in the CTLL-2 cell proliferation assay. It also retained the IL-6 property to enhance IgM synthesis in SKW6.4 cells, induce the proliferation of B-cell hybridomas and stimulate the production of fibrinogen in hepatocytes. Because IL-2 amplifies the cellular immune response and IL-6 up-regulates the humoral response, this bifunctional lymphokine represents a potentially useful therapeutic adduct and may serve as an immunomodulator to enhance the host's response to vaccination.

Abstract
Forty-five healthy postmenopausal women participated in a study designed to examine the effects on bone and mineral metabolism of SHD 386L, a new hormone replacement therapy (HRT) regime. This oral preparation delivers 2 mg estradiol valerate daily and 75 micrograms of levonorgestrel from days 17-28 inclusive of a 28-day cycle. The study was double-blind, randomized and placebo controlled. Patients who received SHD 386L exhibited significant falls in plasma calcium, ionised calcium, phosphate and total alkaline phosphatase. No alteration, however, was observed in plasma osteocalcin. No significant changes in mineral metabolism were observed in a parallel group receiving levonorgestrel alone. The results indicate that SHD 386L is likely to be protective to the skeleton through inhibition of bone resorption and that such actions are attributable to the estrogen component. The preparation was well tolerated, compliance was satisfactory and serious adverse affects were not seen. The above biochemical evidence for skeletal protection will require to be supplemented by prospective biophysical evidence of the effect of SHD 386L on bone mineral density.

Abstract
Early detection of congenital color vision defects is desirable, but school screening studies have been stymied by lack of a suitable test. We evaluated a new color vision test, the APT-5, for use by volunteer screeners in schools and preschools. The screeners tested 1794 children, ages 3 to 13 years, and found the APT-5 easy to use with young children ages 5 years and up. Children who failed the screening were recruited for diagnostic color vision testing; for the children ages 5 to 13 years, 56% of those who failed the screening were successfully recruited. Data analysis indicated that the false-positive rate in this age group was 1% to 2%, and that for boys in this age group the positive predictive value was 71% to 81%. Retest data indicated that most false-positives were not due to the test itself, but to other factors in the school screening situation. Two thirds of all children scored as abnormal by anomaloscopy were simple deuteranomalous, indicating that the APT-5 effectively identified even mild color defects. The results of this trial indicate that the APT-5 is suitable for school color vision screening of children ages 5 years and up.

Abstract
To characterize the region on human IgG1 responsible for its high-affinity interaction with the human Fc gamma receptor class I (Fc gamma RI), we have analyzed the binding properties of a series of genetically engineered chimeric antidinitrophenyl antibodies with identical murine antibody combining sites and hybrid IgG1/IgG2 human constant (C) regions. In addition, we have investigated a panel of reciprocally point-mutated IgG1 and IgG2 chimeric antibodies to identify the amino acid residues that confer cytophilic properties to human IgG1. Our data unambiguously indicate that cytophilic activity of IgG1 is an intrinsic property of its heavy-chain C region 2 (CH2) domain. We report that the entire sequence spanning residues 234-237 (LLGG) is required to restore full binding activity to IgG2 and IgG4 and that individual amino acid substitutions failed to render IgG2 active. Nevertheless, the reciprocal single point mutations in IgG1 either significantly lowered its activity or abolished it completely. Finally, we observed that an IgG2 antibody containing the entire ELLGGP sequence (residues 233-238) was more active than wild-type IgG1. This finding suggests that in addition to the primary contact site identified in the N terminus of the gamma 1 CH2 domain, secondary sites involving residues from the C-terminal half of the domain may also contribute to the IgG1-Fc gamma RI interaction.

Male VA alcoholics have been found to perform significantly poorer than nonalcoholics in face-name learning. Can these results be (a) replicated in a sample of male alcoholics from community treatment programs, (b) extended to female alcoholics, and (c) accounted for by childhood symptoms of attention deficit, conduct, and learning disorders? Seventy-six male and 66 female alcoholics were compared to 48 male and 49 female nonalcoholic controls on a 12-item face-name learning test. Both male and female alcoholics had poorer learning scores than their respective control groups. Learning scores were unrelated to self reports of childhood attention deficit disorder, conduct disorder, and learning problems. Whether alcoholics' impaired face-name learning is due to the direct effect of alcohol on the brain or is a concomitant of alcoholics' disrupted interpersonal relationships remains to be investigated.

Abstract
The nucleotide sequences of 27 T-cell receptor alpha-chain variable region (V alpha)-containing cDNA clones isolated from a cDNA library derived from human peripheral blood lymphocytes were determined. Eighteen different V alpha and 26 different joining (J alpha) gene segments are utilized in these clones. The V alpha gene segments belong to 12 different subfamilies, each containing from one to seven members. Comparisons with the 16 different V alpha and 21 different J alpha sequences previously reported suggest that the germ-line repertoires for these gene segments are greater than previously estimated. Flexibility in the sites of gene segment joining and possibly N-region diversification also contribute to human alpha-chain diversity. Comparisons of human V alpha regions indicate a high degree of variability spread uniformly across the entire V alpha region without obvious hypervariable regions. However, amino acids important for the maintenance of V gene structure are conserved.

Abstract
We have examined phytochrome effects on the abundance of transcripts from several nuclear and chloroplast genes in buds of dark-grown pea seedlings and primary leaves of dark-grown mung-bean seedlings. Probes for nuclear-coded RNAs were selected from a library of cDNA clones and included those corresponding to the small subunit (SS) of ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase and a chlorophyll a/b binding protein (AB). Transcripts from chloroplast genes for RuBP carboxylase large subunit (LS) and a 32,000-dalton photosystem II polypeptide (PII) were assayed with cloned fragments of the chloroplast genome. In addition, we present data on transcripts from a number of other nuclear genes of unknown function, several of which change in abundance during light-induced development. Transcript levels were measured as a proportion of total RNA by a dot blot assay in which RNA from different tissues or stages is fixed to nitrocellulose and hybridized with (32)P-labeled probes prepared from cloned DNAs. Several patterns of induction can be seen. For example, although both SS and AB RNAs show positive, red/far-red reversible responses in both pea and mung bean, in pea buds the induction ratio for SS RNA is much higher than that for AB RNA, while just the reverse is true for mung-bean leaves. In addition, treatment with lowfluence red light produces full induction of the pea AB RNA, while SS RNA in the same tissue does not reach a maximum steady-state level until after about 24 h of supplementary high-intensity white light. In pea buds, chloroplast genes (LS, PII) also show clear responses to phytochrome, as measured by the steady-state levels of their RNA products. Chloroplast DNA levels (as a fraction of the total cellular DNA) show the same response pattern, which may indicate that in peas many of the light effects we see are related to a general stimulation of chloroplast development. In mung beans, the levels of plastid DNA and RNA are already quite high in the leaves of 7-d dark-grown seedlings, and light effects are much less pronounced. The results are consistent with the notion that chloroplast development is arrested at a later stage in dark-grown mung-bean leaves than in etiolated pea buds.

Abstract
The in vitro mineralization of predentin (PD) and of the organic component of dentin (OD) has been studied in a supersaturated solution of calcium phosphate at 37 C and pH=7.4 at total calcium and phosphate concentrations close to those in vivo. The mineralization of OD can be divided into at least three periods based upon the morphology and the specific surface area of the mineral phase formed. Dissolution of the newly precipitated mineral on OD revealed a stoichiometry close to that for octacalcium phosphate. In contrast, PD was ineffective as a crystal nucleator. The mineralization of the inorganic component of dentin (ID) and whole dentin (D) has also been examined.

Abstract
Radish seedlings (Raphanus sativus L.) were grown for 4 days in complete darkness, or in white light, or for 3 days in darkness followed by 1 day of red light. Phototropic dose-response curves for the seedlings grown in these three ways were determined with 460-nm light. The dark-grown and red light-treated seedlings responded with positive curvatures of no more than 10 degrees to energy doses in the first positive range and with larger positive curvatures in the second positive dose range. No indifferent or negative curvature was seen with the light intensity used. White light-grown seedlings did not respond to first positive energy doses, but responded as strongly to second positive doses as the other types of seedlings.

Abstract
A method has been developed whereby the second positive phototropism can be observed separately from the first positive and negative phototropic responses which also occur in oat coleoptiles. Although the second positive phototropic response has often been referred to as the base response, photoreception for it is shown to occur mainly in the apical 3 mm of the coleoptile. The Bunsen-Roscoe reciprocity law, so typical of first positive phototropism, does not apply to the second positive responses, and the amount of curvature increases linearly with the duration of the stimulus. However, although this linear proportionality between stimulus duration and response is the major factor determining response at all intensities tested, the intensity of the stimulus does influence the response somewhat. The action spectrum for the response shows no activity above 510 nm and has peaks at 375 and 450 nm. In all but one particular it closely resembles the action spectrum for the first positive phototropism, and it is concluded that the same, or similar, pigments may well be the photoreceptors for both types of response. The identity of this blue light absorbing pigment is not known.
