Abstract
OBJECTIVE Thoracic calcifications are frequently found in chest radiographs and CTs, occurring in a wide variety of disorders. Although most calcifications are harmless sequelae of previous disease, they provide important information to establish the diagnosis. This article reviews the different types of calcified lesions found in the chest, focusing on lesions outside the lung parenchyma. A location-based approach to the differential diagnosis is used, while providing the reader with diagnostic pearls and discussing the clinical importance of the different types of calcifications. CONCLUSION Chest calcifications are a common finding in routine chest imaging. Understanding the different etiologies and radiologic manifestations provide the radiologist with the necessary tools to elaborate a differential diagnosis, as well as to correctly differentiate the findings that need further work-up from the ones that can be dismissed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This paper fills a gap in the applied research field, for a local context, by addressing the topics of describing cataract surgery' clinical outcomes; quality of life (QoL); and costs of the patients treated after the implementation of the ICHOM standard set. METHODS This is a retrospective observational study using real-world data (RWD). We included all patients subjected to cataract surgery at the Portuguese Institute of oncology - Porto (IPO-Porto), Portugal, after 3 months follow up period completed between 5th June 2017 and 21st May 2018. The following inclusion criteria: corrected visual acuity of ≤ 6/10 or other significant visual disturbance due to lens opacity or the existence of a large anisometropia. A circuit was implemented based on the ICHOM standard for cataract, to measure clinical variables (e.g. visual acuity) and QoL (CATQUEST-9SF) before and after surgery, and cost of treatment. The results were explored by means of a paired-sample t-test, considering normality assumptions. RESULTS Data refers to 268 patients (73 P25-P75:32-95 years old), regarding 374 eyes. The cataract surgery had a positive effect on visual acuity (p < 0.001), refraction (right and left cylinder; p < 0.001) and all QoL dimensions. The vast majority of patients, around 98%, reported improvements in QoL. Based on IPO-Porto administrative records, the direct cost of treating cataracts (per eye) is of 500€, representing a total cost of 187,000€ for the number of patients operated herein. CONCLUSION This study reports the successful implementation of the ICHOM standard set for cataracts in a Portuguese institution and confirms that cataract surgery provides a rapid visual recovery, with excellent visual outcomes and minimal complications in most patients, while also having a positive impact on patients' quality of life.

Abstract
Global strategies to halt the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change are often formulated separately, even though they are interdependent and risk failure if pursued in isolation. The Global Safety Net maps how expanded nature conservation addresses both overarching threats. We identify 50% of the terrestrial realm that, if conserved, would reverse further biodiversity loss, prevent CO2 emissions from land conversion, and enhance natural carbon removal. This framework shows that, beyond the 15.1% land area currently protected, 35.3% of land area is needed to conserve additional sites of particular importance for biodiversity and stabilize the climate. Fifty ecoregions and 20 countries contribute disproportionately to proposed targets. Indigenous lands overlap extensively with the Global Safety Net. Conserving the Global Safety Net could support public health by reducing the potential for zoonotic diseases like COVID-19 from emerging in the future.

Abstract
Background:Scleroderma-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) is often observed in patients with systemic scleroderma (SSc) and its diagnosis contributes to early treatment decisions1,2.Objectives:The present study aims to automatically quantify SSc-ILD from high-resolution chest-computed tomography (HRCT) and to evaluate the association between interstitial lung disease (ILD) extension and lung function impairment.Methods:Ninety-four patients with SSc and 27 lung-healthy subjects matched for gender, weight, height, and age underwent HRCT, spirometry and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (DLCO). SSc-ILD was determined as the tissue mass present between -500 and +100 Hounsfield Units normalized by the total lung tissue mass (TLM). Cut off was the highest value obtained in the control group (25% of TLM). All data are presented as mean and standard deviations (Table I). An ANOVA test followed by Bonferroni post-hoc correction was used for comparisons among groups.Results:From 94 patients with SSc, 64 were classified as having pulmonary involvement (SSc-ILD) and 30 as not having pulmonary involvement (SSc No-ILD). In SSc-ILD subjects, there was a significant reduction in forced vital capacity (FVC), carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (DLCO) and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity normalized by alveolar ventilation (DLCO/A) when compared with SSc No-ILD and control group.Conclusion:The proposed method allows the automatic quantification of SSc-ILD from HRCT and ILD extent is associated with pulmonary function impairment.References:[1]Doyle TJ, Dellaripa PF. Abstract
AIM To compare pancreatic and hepatic steatosis quantified by proton density fat fraction (PDFF) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with chronic liver disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 46 adult patients who underwent liver biopsy for chronic viral hepatitis (n=19) or other chronic non-alcoholic liver diseases (NALD) (n=27). Liver biopsy was used as the gold standard for diagnosing and grading hepatic steatosis. All patients underwent clinical evaluation and MRI with a multi-echo chemical shift-encoded (MECSE) gradient-echo sequence for liver and pancreas PDFF quantification. We used Spearman's correlation coefficient to determine the degree of association between hepatic PDFF and steatosis grade, and between pancreatic PDFF and steatosis grade and hepatic PDFF. To compare the chronic viral hepatitis group and the NALD group, we used t-tests for continuous or ordinal variables and chi-square tests for categorical variables. RESULTS Hepatic PDFF measurements correlated with steatosis grades (RS=0.875, p<0.001). Pancreatic PDFF correlated with hepatic steatosis grades (RS=0.573, p<0.001) and hepatic PDFF measurements (RS=0.536, p<0.001). In the subgroup of patients with chronic NALD, the correlations remained significant between pancreatic PDFF and hepatic PDFF (RS=0.632, p<0.001) and between pancreatic PDFF and liver steatosis (RS=0.608, p<0.001); however, in the subgroup of patients with viral hepatitis these correlations were no longer significant. CONCLUSION Pancreatic fat deposition correlates with hepatic steatosis in patients with chronic NALD, but not in those with chronic viral hepatitis.

Abstract
Two dietary sources of zinc (ZnSO4 or organic Zn) were tested in chickens challenged with coccidiosis (Co) or coccidiosis plus Clostridium perfringens (CoCPF). On day 14, the chickens were orally gavaged with ∼5,000 Eimeria maxima sporulated oocysts. On day 19, 20, and 21 chickens challenged with C. perfringens were given a broth culture containing 108 cfu of this bacterium. Productive performance parameters were determined at d 14, 21, and 28. On day 21, necrotic enteritis (NE) lesions were scored, and intestinal permeability was evaluated. Jejunum and cecal tonsils were collected for morphology and gene expression analysis. On day 21, organic Zn improved BW gain by 18.6% (P = 0.07), and FCR by 12% (P = 0.09) in CoCPF challenged chickens vs. birds fed ZnSO4. From 1 to 28, organic Zn increased BW gain (P = 0.02), and improved FCR (P = 0.03) vs. birds fed ZnSO4. At 21 d, NE lesions were only observed in CoCPF birds (P < 0.001), and mortality due to NE was only observed when CoCPF birds were fed ZnSO4 (P = 0.001). Organic Zn fed birds had increased villus height in the jejunum (P = 0.005) and decreased intestinal permeability (P = 0.01) vs. ZnSO4. In the jejunum, organic Zn fed birds showed a downregulation of expression of IL-8 (P = 0.02), and upregulation of IL-10 (P = 0.05) in CoCPF birds vs. ZnSO4- CoCPF birds. As main effect, birds supplemented with organic Zn had higher mRNA expression of TLR-2 (P = 0.02) and IgA (P = 0.01). In the cecal tonsils, organic Zn fed birds showed upregulation of iNOS (P = 0.008) in CoCPF birds vs. ZnSO4-CoCPF birds. Organic Zn supplementation reduced intestinal permeability and attenuated intestinal inflammation of broilers co-challenged with coccidia and C. perfringens.

Abstract
AIM To investigate iron loading within the liver, pancreas, spleen, and bone marrow using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) transverse relaxation rate (R2*), in patients with diffuse liver diseases; to evaluate the relationships between iron accumulation in these tissue compartments; and to assess the association between tissue iron overload and the pattern of hepatic cellular iron distribution (hepatocytes versus Kupffer cells). MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty-six patients with diffuse liver diseases had MRI-derived R2* values, using a multi-echo chemical-shift encoded MRI sequence, of the liver, pancreas, spleen, and vertebral bone marrow. All patients had liver biopsy samples scored for hepatic iron grading (0-4) and iron cellular distribution (within hepatocytes only or within both hepatocytes and Kupffer cells). RESULTS Liver R2* increased with histological iron grade (RS=0.58, p<0.001) and correlated with spleen (RS=0.71, p<0.001) and bone marrow R2* (RS=0.66, p<0.001), but not with pancreatic R2* (RS=0.22, p=0.096). Splenic and bone marrow R2* values were also correlated (RS=0.72, p<0.001). Patients with iron inside Kupffer cells had the highest R2* in liver, spleen and bone marrow. CONCLUSIONS Patients with chronic diffuse liver diseases have concomitant hepatic, splenic, and bone marrow iron loading. The highest hepatic iron scores and iron inside Kupffer cells were associated with the highest splenic and bone marrow deposits, suggesting systemic iron accumulation in the mononuclear phagocytic system.

Abstract
Waterfowl are considered the natural reservoir of low-virulence Newcastle disease viruses (loNDVs) and low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses (LPAIVs). The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of co-infections with loNDV and LPAIV on the infectivity and excretion of these viruses in mallards. One-month-old mallards were inoculated intranasally with 10(6) median embryo infectious doses of a wild-bird-origin loNDV and A/Mallard/MN/199106/99 (H3N8) LPAIV on the same day or received the LPAIV 2 or 5 days after loNDV inoculation. All mallards became infected with both viruses based on detection of seroconversion and viral shedding. Co-infection resulted in a higher number of cloacal swabs detected positive for LPAIV and a lower number of cloacal swabs detected positive for loNDV in some groups, although differences between groups were not statistically significant. Co-infection did not affect replication of LPAIV in epithelial cells of the lower intestine and bursa of Fabricius. In summary, the results of this study indicate that co-infection with LPAIV and loNDV does not affect the ability of mallards to be infected with either virus although it may have minimal effects on patterns (source and timing) of viral shedding.

Abstract
Avian influenza (AI) viruses have been detected in more than 105 wild bird species from 12 different orders but species-related differences in susceptibility to AI viruses exist. Expression of α2,3-linked (avian-type) and α2,6-linked (human-type) sialic acid (SA) influenza virus receptors in tissues is considered one of the determinants of the host range and tissue tropism of influenza viruses. We investigated the expression of these SA receptors in 37 wild bird species from 11 different orders by lectin histochemistry. Two isoforms of Maackia amurensis (MAA) lectin, MAA1 and MAA2, were used to detect α2,3-linked SA, and Sambucus nigra lectin was used to detect α2,6-linked SA. All species evaluated expressed α2,3-linked and α2,6-linked SA receptors in endothelial cells and renal tubular epithelial cells. Both α2,3-linked and α-2,6-linked SA receptors were expressed in respiratory and intestinal tract tissues of aquatic and terrestrial wild bird species from different taxa, but differences in SA expression and in the predominant isoform of MAA lectin bound were observed. With a few possible exceptions, these observed differences were not generally predictive of reported species susceptibility to AI viruses based on published experimental and field data.

Abstract
We studied the effect of different routes of inoculation on the infectivity and duration of viral shedding in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) infected with wild bird-origin low pathogenic avian influenza viruses (LPAIVs). One-month-old mallards were inoculated with 10(6) median embryo infectious doses of either A/mallard/MN/199106/99 (H3N8) or A/mallard/MN/355779/00 (H5N2) via 1 of 5 different routes: intranasal (IN), intratracheal (IT), intraocular (IO), intracloacal (IC), or intra-ingluvial (II). Birds in all routes of inoculation groups became infected with LPAIV as detected by virus isolation, real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and serology. Mallards in different route of inoculation groups had similar viral shedding through oropharynx and cloaca from 1 day postinoculation (dpi). The peak of oropharyngeal (OP) viral shedding was reached between 2 and 3 dpi in all routes of inoculation groups infected with either virus. The peak of cloacal (CL) viral excretion was reached between 2 and 3 dpi in all routes of inoculation groups infected with H3N8 LPAIV and in the IO-, IC-, and II-inoculated groups infected with H5N2 LPAIV, with a delayed and shorter peak for the IN- and IT-inoculated groups. The birds inoculated via the II route had more productive OP and CL viral shedding after infection with either LPAIV, as evidenced by higher number of swabs testing positive over the study period. In conclusion, mallards can be infected with LPAIV by various routes of inoculation, and this corroborates their high susceptibility to infection by these viruses.

Abstract
Mallards are important natural hosts involved in the epidemiology of low pathogenic avian influenza viruses (LPAIVs). LPAIVs are mainly transmitted by a fecal-oral route and are excreted in high concentrations in the feces. We investigated the pathology, viral antigen distribution, and the expression of alpha2,3 sialic acid (SA) influenza virus receptors in mallards after intranasal inoculation with A/Mallard/MN/199106/99 (H3N8) or A/Mallard/MN/355779/00 (H5N2). Gross lesions were not observed. Avian influenza virus (AIV) nucleoprotein (NP) antigen was detected in rare epithelial cells of the larynx and trachea only at 1-day postinoculation (dpi) in the birds infected with H3N8 LPAIV, but infection with either virus was associated with lymphocytic tracheitis and laryngitis on 1 and 2 dpi. AIV NP antigen was detected in enterocytes of the lower intestine from 1 to 4 dpi and in epithelial cells of the bursa of Fabricius from 2 to 3 dpi in birds infected with either virus. Oropharyngeal and cloacal viral shedding was detected from 1 dpi, with higher cloacal viral shedding detected at 2 and 3 dpi with both viruses. Mallards abundantly expressed alpha2,3 sialic acid receptors in epithelial cells of the respiratory tract, lower intestine, and bursa of Fabricius. Some infected birds had decreased alpha2,3 sialic acid expression in epithelial cells of the bursa of Fabricius and in enterocytes of the ceca and colon. In conclusion, the main sites of LPAIV replication in mallards are the enterocytes of the lower intestinal tract and epithelial cells of the bursa of Fabricius in the first days after infection, when these birds are shedding AIV in high titers in the feces.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Machado-Joseph disease/spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (MJD/SCA3) may rarely presents a parkinsonian phenotype. Considering that mutations in the glucocerebrosidase (GBA) gene have been associated with Parkinson disease, we investigated whether these would be more prevalent in MJD/SCA3 patients with parkinsonian manifestations than in those without them. METHODS MJD/SCA3 patients with parkinsonian features were identified and compared to relatives and to a MJD/SCA3 control group with no such features. The GBA gene was sequenced and, in a subset of patients and in normal volunteers, GBA enzyme activity was measured. RESULTS We have identified nine index MJD/SCA3 patients with parkinsonian manifestations. Overall, GBA sequence variations were found in 3/9 MJD/SCA3 index cases with parkinsonian manifestations (33%) and in 0/40 MJD/SCA3 controls without parkinsonism (p=0.03, Fisher exact test). The GBA sequence variations found were p.K(-27)R, p.E326K, and p.T369M. The latter two sequence variations were also found in two symptomatic relatives with no parkinsonian manifestations. A MJD/SCA3 relative belonging to the first positive pedigree and carrier of the p.K(-27)R mutation also presented parkinsonian manifestations. GBA activity in MJD/SCA3 patients was similar to those found in the normal control group. CONCLUSION Sequence variations at the GBA gene may play a role as a minor, modifying gene of MJD/SCA3 phenotype. This hypothetical role was not related to changes in GBA activity in peripheral leukocytes.

Abstract
An outbreak of vaccinal infectious laryngotracheitis (LT) began in 2005 involving 57 ranches of two broiler companies in California. Standard biosecurity, and cleaning and disinfection programs along with vaccination, did not stop the outbreak. Due to the close proximity and number of birds in the same geographic area, the decision was made by both companies to attempt a joint regional and zonal depopulation strategy. The strategy involved extended downtime between flock placements on ranches located within close proximity to one another. This extended downtime on each ranch ranged from 30 to 91 days. An extensive biosecurity audit, with more than 70 items, was implemented. Briefly, this included heating all houses to 37 C for 100 hr, removing the litter, cleaning and disinfecting everything on the ranches, then again heating the houses to 37 C for 100 hr. Used litter was spread on crops away from poultry, or was sent to a litter processor for pasteurization. Extensive surveillance for LT at 28, 35, and 42 days of age was performed on the initial flocks, which had been placed immediately after the extended downtime. Since completion of this plan in early 2008, LT was diagnosed on only two of the previously 57 affected ranches. Those two ranches, and those within close proximity, went through the extended downtime program and biosecurity audit a second time. Currently, both companies are free of LT. This program lends credence to the importance of cooperation between companies to consider all the ranches within close proximity as the population at risk. In the control of LT in broilers, the program also highlights the necessity for extended downtime and enhanced biosecurity auditing of all flocks.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the presence of sleep symptoms in Machado-Joseph disease/spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (MJD/SCA3). SUBJECTS/METHODS We used a sleep questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to compare 53 patients with MJD/SCA3 and 106 controls. RESULTS Patients with MJD/SCA3 reported more symptoms of insomnia, restless leg syndrome and REM sleep behavior disorder as well as nocturnal cramps, snoring and nocturnal apnea. Insomnia was the most frequently reported sleep-related complaint in the MJD/SCA3 group. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that sleep disorders are common in patients with MJD/SCA3 and probably have a multifactorial etiology, with components of a primary sleep disorder in addition to sleep-disrupting symptoms such as nocturia and cramps.

Abstract
We report the clinical and laboratory findings of a patient with an aggressive Epstein-Barr virus positive CD2+/CD56+ natural killer-cell lymphoma with a high mitotic activity and complex chromosomal abnormalities presenting with life-threatening pericardial and pleural effusions, disseminated skin lesions, breast nodule and large suprarenal masses. The clinical course was characterized by resistance to chemotherapy and relapsing pericardial and pleural effusions with respiratory and haemodynamic failure. Death occurred 4 months after the first manifestations of the disease as a consequence of cardiac tamponade.

Abstract
A cDNA (Vupat1) encoding a predicted 43 kDa protein was isolated from drought-stressed cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) leaves. It has homology with patatin, a potato tuber storage protein with lipolytic acyl hydrolase activity. The recombinant protein VUPAT1 expressed in the baculovirus system displays preferentially galactolipid acyl hydrolase activity. Phospholipids are very slowly hydrolyzed and apparently triacylglycerols are not deacylated. Vupat1 promoter contains putative drought-inducible sequences. Northern blots showed that gene expression is stimulated by drought stress and is more pronounced in a drought-sensitive cultivar than in a drought-tolerant one. An involvement in drought-induced galactolipid degradation is proposed for VUPAT1.

Abstract
This paper reports the cloning of a cDNA (Vupat1) expressed in Vigna unguiculata leaves coding for a protein with 48% sequence homology to patatin, the major protein from potato tuber which has lipolytic acylhydrolase activity. Two cultivars differing in drought tolerance were examined in Northern-blot analyses. Expression of Vupat1 is stimulated by drought stress, especially in the drought-sensitive cultivar. Vupat1 was expressed in the baculovirus system as a fusion protein secreted in the culture medium. The recombinant protein displays lipolytic activity towards monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, digalactosyldiacylglycerol and sulphoquinovosyldiacylglycerols.
