Abstract
Abstract Alphasatellites (family Alphasatellitidae) are circular, single-stranded (ss) DNA molecules of ~1350 nucleotide in size that have been characterized in both the Old and New Worlds. Alphasatellites have inherent ability to self-replicate, which is accomplished by a single protein, replication-associated protein (Rep). Although the precise function of alphasatellite is yet unknown, and these consider dispensable for infectivity, however, their Rep protein functions as a suppressor of host defence. While alphasatellites are most frequently associated with begomoviruses, particularly with monopartite than bipartite begomoviruses, they have recently been found associated with mastreviruses. The in planta maintenance of alphasatellites by helper geminivirus is still an enigma, with no available study on the topic. This study aimed to investigate whether a widely distributed bipartite begomovirus, tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV), can maintain cotton leaf curl Multan alphasatellite (CLCuMuA) in the presence or absence of cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite (CLCuMuB). The findings of this study demonstrated that ToLCNDV or its DNA A could maintain CLCuMuA in Nicotiana benthamiana plants. However, the presence of CLCuMuB interferes with the maintenance of CLCuMuA, and mutations in the CP of ToLCNDV further reduces it. Our study highlighted that the maintenance of alphasatellites is impaired in the presence of a betasatellite by ToLCNDV. Further investigation is needed to unravel all the interactions between a helper virus and an alphasatellites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human behavior and more specifically behavioral insight-based approaches to vaccine uptake have often been overlooked. While there have been a few narrative reviews indexed in Medline on behavioral interventions to increase vaccine uptake, to our knowledge, none have been systematic reviews and meta-analyses covering not just high but also low-and-middle income countries. METHODS We included 613 studies from the Medline database in our systematic review and meta-analysis categorizing different behavioral interventions in 9 domains: education campaigns, on-site vaccination, incentives, free vaccination, institutional recommendation, provider recommendation, reminder and recall, message framing, and vaccine champion. Additionally, considering that there is variability in the acceptance of vaccines among different populations, we assessed studies from both high-income countries (HICs) and low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), separately. FINDINGS Our results showed that behavioral interventions can considerably improve vaccine uptake in most settings. All domains that we examined improved vaccine uptake with the highest effect size associated with provider recommendation (OR: 3.4 (95%CI: 2.5-4.6); Domain: motivation) and on-site vaccination (OR: 2.9 (95%CI: 2.3-3.7); Domain: practical issues). While the number of studies conducted in LMICs was smaller, the quality of studies was similar with those conducted in HICs. Nevertheless, there were variations in the observed effect sizes. INTERPRETATION Our findings indicate that "provider recommendation" and "on-site vaccination" along with other behavioral interventions can be employed to increase vaccination rates globally.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a highly prevalent disorder of the cervicovaginal microbiota. Molecular-BV may put women at increased risk for adverse reproductive and obstetric outcomes. We investigated the association of HIV and pregnancy on the vaginal microbiota and associations with molecular-BV in women of reproductive age from Pune, India. SETTING We studied vaginal samples from N = 170 women, including N = 44 nonpregnant HIV seronegative, N = 56 pregnant seronegative, N = 47 nonpregnant women with HIV (WWH), and N = 23 pregnant WWH, and collected data on clinical, behavioral, and demographic factors. METHODS We used 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to characterize the composition of the vaginal microbiota. We classified the vaginal microbiota of these women into community state types based on bacterial composition and relative abundance and further categorized them into molecular-BV versus Lactobacillus -dominated states. To determine associations between pregnancy and HIV status with outcome of molecular-BV, logistic regression models were used. RESULTS There was a high prevalence of molecular-BV (30%) in this cohort. We found that pregnancy was associated with decreased odds of molecular-BV (adjusted OR = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.14 to 0.87), while HIV was associated with increased odds of molecular-BV (adjusted OR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.33 to 5.73), even when controlling for multiple relevant factors such as age, number of sexual partners, condom use, and douching. CONCLUSION Larger and longitudinal studies are needed to further characterize molecular-BV and the vaginal microbiota in pregnant women and WWH and relate these factors to infectious, reproductive, and obstetric outcomes. In the long term, these studies may lead to novel microbiota-based therapeutics to improve women's reproductive and obstetric health.

Abstract
Background Children who are HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU), i.e., born to mothers living with HIV despite not acquiring HIV infection themselves, have increased morbidity and mortality. Data suggests that the breastmilk profile, and more specifically human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) composition, differ by maternal HIV status and may partly help explain this increased risk. We are currently conducting an HMO-based synbiotic randomized trial in breastfed children HEU, the MIGH-T MO study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05282485), to assess the impact on health outcomes of children HEU. Here, we report our experience from a study of the feasibility and acceptability of a powder-based intervention given to breastfeeding children, conducted prior to the initiation of MIGH-T MO. Methods 10 mothers living with HIV and their breastfeeding children HEU accessing care at Tygerberg Hospital, in Cape Town, South Africa were enrolled. A powder-based product, potato maltodextrin, was mixed with expressed breast milk and administered to the infants daily for 4 weeks. Data on feasibility, acceptability, adherence, and health outcomes were assessed at the enrollment visit and at the 4 week visit, along with weekly telephone calls. Results 10 mother-infant pairs were enrolled in this study, with infant age ranging from 6-20 months of age. Among the mothers who met the eligibility criteria, all of them enrolled into the study suggesting high acceptability. While there was some Ioss-to-follow-up after the first visit, among the mothers who remained, there were no major feasibility concerns related to study procedures, product administration, adherence, tolerance, and health outcome assessment. Conclusion Our pilot study demonstrated that a powder-based intervention for breastfeeding children HEU in South Africa is acceptable and feasible. This suggests potential feasibility and acceptability for other larger studies, including our ongoing MIGH-T MO study, that use similar powder-based interventions such as probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics, in breastfed infants from similar settings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Children who are HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU), that is, children who do not acquire HIV infection despite being born to mothers with HIV, have a higher risk of mortality, infectious morbidity and growth deficits than children who are HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU). Prior research has focused on breast feeding and has pointed to changes in human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) associated with maternal HIV that may influence the infant microbiome and thereby lead to these adverse outcomes. However, to our knowledge, no study has attempted to intervene along this pathway to reduce the occurrence of the adverse outcomes in children HEU. We will conduct a double-blind, randomised trial of a synbiotic intervention, which combines an HMO and probiotic, in breastfed infants HEU in South Africa to evaluate whether this intervention has promise to reduce excess infectious morbidity and growth faltering compared with controls. METHODS AND ANALYSIS One hundred and forty-four breastfed infants HEU, aged 4 weeks, will be 1:1 randomised to receive either a daily synbiotic or an identical-looking placebo through age 24 weeks. Infants will be followed until age 48 weeks and outcomes of infectious morbidity, growth and biological measurements (eg, microbiota, inflammation and metabolome) will be assessed. Analyses will follow intention-to-treat principles comparing the cohorts as randomised. Infants HEU will be compared across arms with respect to the occurrence of infectious morbidity and growth outcomes through 4-24 weeks and 4-48 weeks using appropriate parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. Additionally, an observational cohort of 40 breastfed infants HUU will be recruited as a comparator group with no intervention. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval for this study has been obtained from the ethics committees at Columbia University and Stellenbosch University. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Given their central role in supporting children's development, childcare professionals' overall physical and mental health is important. We evaluated the prevalence of chronic diseases, depression, and stress levels during the COVID-19 pandemic among US childcare professionals. METHODS Data were obtained from US childcare professionals (N = 81,682) through an online survey from May 22, 2020, through June 8, 2020. We used multivariable logistic and linear regression models to assess the association of sociodemographic characteristics with 4 physical health conditions (asthma, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity), depression, and stress weighted to national representativeness. RESULTS For physical health conditions, 14.3% (n = 11,717) reported moderate to severe asthma, 6.5% (n = 5,317) diabetes, 4.9% (n = 3,971) heart disease, and 19.8% (n = 16,207) obesity. For mental health, 45.7% (n = 37,376) screened positive for depression and 66.5% (n = 54,381) reported moderate to high stress levels. Race, ethnicity, and sex/gender disparities were found for physical health conditions but not mental health of childcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION Our findings highlighted that childcare professionals' depression rates during the pandemic were higher than before the pandemic, and depression, stress, and asthma rates were higher than rates among US adults overall during the pandemic. Given the essential work childcare professionals provided during the pandemic, policy makers and public health officials should consider what can be done to support their physical and mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between the use of nonpharmaceutical interventions and COVID-19 vaccination among U.S. child care providers remains unknown. If unvaccinated child care providers are also less likely to employ nonpharmaceutical interventions, then a vaccine mandate across child care programs may have larger health and safety benefits. METHODS To assess and quantify the relationship between the use of nonpharmaceutical interventions and COVID-19 vaccination among U.S. child care providers, we conducted a prospective cohort study of child care providers (N = 20,013) from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Child care providers were asked to complete a self-administered email survey in May-June 2020 assessing the use of nonpharmaceutical interventions (predictors) and a follow-up survey in May-June 2021 assessing COVID-19 vaccination (outcome). Nonpharmaceutical interventions were dichotomized as personal mitigation measures (e.g., masking, social distancing, handwashing) and classroom mitigation measures (e.g., temperature checks of staff/children, symptom screening for staff/children, cohorting). RESULTS For each unendorsed personal mitigation measure during 2020, the likelihood of vaccination in 2021 decreased by 7% (Risk Ratio = 0.93 [95% CI 0.93 - 0.95]). No significant association was found between classroom mitigation measures and child care provider vaccination (Risk Ratio = 1.01 [95% CI 1.00-1.01]). CONCLUSIONS Child care providers who used fewer personal mitigation measures were also less likely to get vaccinated for COVID-19 as an alternative form of protection. The combined nonadherence to multiple types of preventative health behaviors, that is, both nonpharmaceutical interventions and vaccination, among some child care providers may support a role for mandatory vaccination to achieve pandemic control.

Abstract
The application of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of MgFe and its composites with biochar of Eucalyptus camdulensis (Eb) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was explored in a batch study to mitigate toxic lead ions (Pb2+) from synthetic wastewater solutions. SEM images revealed that MgFe/LDH composites with Eb were successfully formed, while FTIR spectra confirmed the successful adsorption of Pb2+ onto the MgFe/LDH and composite adsorbents. Batch equilibrium was attained after 60 min, then the adsorption capacity gradually increased. An increase in adsorption capacity (and a 60% decrease in the percentage removal) was observed by increasing the initial Pb2+ concentration, and the highest value was 136 mg g-1 for MgFe/LDH-Eb_EDTA. A 50–60% increase in both the adsorption capacities and percent removal was seen in the pH range of 2–6. The second-order kinetic model had a nearly perfect fitting, suggesting that chemisorption was the mechanism controlling adsorption. The Langmuir isotherm model best presented the adsorption data, suggesting that the Pb2+ adsorption was monolayer, and predicted a better affinity between the adsorbent surface and absorbed Pb2+ for MgFe/LDH-Eb_EDTA in comparison to the other two adsorbents. The D–R isotherm suggested that the adsorption system was physical based on E values for all three adsorbents, while the Temkin isotherm model suggested that Pb2+ adsorption was heterogeneous. Finally, the Sips and R–P isotherms predicted that the adsorption of Pb2+ on the surface of the adsorbents was homogeneous and heterogeneous.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to assess the growth performance, morphometric traits, muscle chemical composition and cholesterol content in four phenotypes of naked neck chicken (black, white-black, light brown and dark brown). A total of 320-day-old chicks, 80 from each phenotype, were randomly stratified into 20 replicates (16/replicate), according to a completely randomized design. The results showed higher final body weight, weight gain, and better FCR in both light brown and dark brown phenotypes whereas time of gains was found to be greater in dark brown phenotype. Keel length and shank circumference were greater in dark brown whereas wing spread was found to be higher in light brown phenotype. Drumstick circumference and body length did not show any significant differences (P > 0.05) across the phenotypes. Dry matter was found to be higher in white black, crude protein in black, white black and dark brown, moisture in light brown, and cholesterol content in black whereas ether extract and ash content were found to be greater in black and white black phenotypes. In conclusion, both light brown and dark brown phenotypes showed superior growth performance and morphometric traits. Similarly, from a health point of view, the dark brown and light brown phenotypes seem superior because their cholesterol content was low. Thus, it is strongly recommended that there should be a conscious effort to improve economically important traits of the light and dark brown birds to be used as dual-purpose slow growing chicken, especially in developing countries.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE It is not known how effective child masking is in childcare settings in preventing the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. This question is critical to inform health policy and safe childcare practices. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between masking children 2 years and older and subsequent childcare closure because of COVID-19. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS A prospective, 1-year, longitudinal electronic survey study of 6654 childcare professionals at home- and center-based childcare programs in all 50 states was conducted at baseline (May 22 to June 8, 2020) and follow-up (May 26 to June 23, 2021). Using a generalized linear model (log-binomial model) with robust SEs, this study evaluated the association between childcare program closure because of a confirmed or suspected COVID-19 case in either children or staff during the study period and child masking in both early adoption (endorsed at baseline) and continued masking (endorsed at baseline and follow-up), while controlling for physical distancing, other risk mitigation strategies, and program and community characteristics. EXPOSURES Child masking in childcare programs as reported by childcare professionals at baseline and both baseline and follow-up. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Childcare program closure because of a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case in either children or staff as reported in the May 26 to June 23, 2021, end survey. RESULTS This survey study of 6654 childcare professionals (mean [SD] age, 46.9 [11.3] years; 750 [11.3%] were African American, 57 [0.9%] American Indian/Alaska Native, 158 [2.4%] Asian, 860 [12.9%] Hispanic, 135 [2.0%] multiracial [anyone who selected >1 race on the survey], 18 [0.3%] Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and 5020 [75.4%] White) found that early adoption (baseline) of child masking was associated with a 13% lower risk of childcare program closure because of a COVID-19 case (adjusted relative risk, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.77-0.99), and continued masking for 1 year was associated with a 14% lower risk (adjusted relative risk, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.74-1.00). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This survey study of childcare professionals suggests that masking young children is associated with fewer childcare program closures, enabling in-person education. This finding has important public health policy implications for families that rely on childcare to sustain employment.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE The association of elevated levels of specific inflammatory markers during pregnancy with adverse birth outcomes and infant growth could indicate pathways for potential interventions. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether higher levels of certain inflammatory markers during pregnancy are associated with preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and infant growth deficits. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In this cohort study of pregnant women with or without HIV, 218 mother-infant pairs were followed up from pregnancy through 12 months post partum from June 27, 2016, to December 9, 2019. Pregnant women aged 18 to 40 years and between 13 and 34 weeks of gestation who were receiving antenatal care were enrolled in a cohort stratified by HIV status; sampling was based on convenience sampling from women receiving antenatal care at Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Government Medical College. EXPOSURES Levels of multiple circulating inflammation markers during the third trimester of pregnancy. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary study outcome was PTB (<37 weeks' gestation). Secondary outcomes were LBW (<2500 g) and repeated measures (delivery; 6 weeks post partum; and 3, 6, and 12 months post partum using multivariable generalized linear models) of infant growth outcomes (length-for-age, weight-for-age, and weight-for-length z scores). RESULTS The median age of the 218 women at enrollment was 23 years (IQR, 21-27 years). In multivariable models, higher pregnancy levels of interleukin 17A were associated with increased odds of both PTB (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.62; 95% CI, 1.11-6.17) and LBW (aOR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.04-3.15). Higher levels of interleukin 1β were associated with increased PTB (aOR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.15-1.89) and infant growth deficits (lower length-for-age z score: adjusted β = -0.10; 95% CI, -0.18 to -0.01; lower weight-for-age z score: adjusted β = -0.07; 95% CI, -0.14 to 0.001). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This study suggests that increased levels of certain systemic inflammatory markers, including interleukin 1β and interleukin 17A, during pregnancy were associated with adverse birth outcomes and infant growth deficits. Future studies should evaluate whether potential interventions to modulate specific inflammatory pathways during pregnancy could improve birth outcomes and infant growth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Ensuring high coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) vaccine uptake among US child care providers is crucial to mitigating the public health implications of child-staff and staff-child transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2; however, the vaccination rate among this group was previously unknown. METHODS To characterize vaccine uptake among US child care providers, we conducted a multistate cross-sectional survey of the child care workforce. Providers were identified through various national databases and state registries. A link to the survey was sent via e-mail between May 26 and June 23, 2021. A 37.8% response yielded 21 663 respondents, with 20 013 satisfying inclusion criteria. RESULTS Overall COVID-19 vaccine uptake among US child care providers (78.2%, 90% confidence interval: 77.5% to 78.9%) was higher than the US general adult population (65%). Vaccination rates varied between states from 53.5% to 89.4%. Vaccine uptake among respondents differed significantly (P < .01) based on respondent age (70.0% for ages 25-34, 91.6% for ages 75-84), race (70.0% for Black or African Americans, 92.5% for Asian Americans), annual household income (70.8% for <$35 000, 85.1% for >$75 000), and child care setting (73.0% for home-based, 79.7% for center-based). CONCLUSIONS COVID-19 vaccine uptake among US child care providers was higher than the general US adult population. Those who were younger, lower income, Black or African American, resided in states either in the Mountain West or the South, and/or worked in home-based child care programs reported the lowest rates of vaccination. State public health leaders and lawmakers should prioritize these subgroups to realize the largest gains in vaccine uptake among providers.

Abstract
CONTEXT The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in more than 20 million cases and 350 000 deaths in the United States. With the ongoing media coverage and spread of misinformation, public health authorities need to identify effective strategies and create culturally appropriate and evidence-based messaging that best encourage preventive health behaviors to control the spread of COVID-19. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between COVID-19 sources of information and knowledge, and how US adults' knowledge may be associated with preventive health behaviors to help mitigate COVID-19 cases and deaths. DESIGN AND SETTING For this cross-sectional study, survey data pertaining to COVID-19 were collected via online platform, Qualtrics, in February and May 2020. PARTICIPANTS Data responses included 718 US adults from the February survey and 672 US adults from the May survey-both representative of the US adult population. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Sociodemographic characteristics, COVID-19 knowledge score, COVID-19 reliable sources of information, and adherence to COVID-19 preventive health behaviors. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The main findings showed that disseminating COVID-19 information across various sources, particularly television, health care providers, and health officials, to increase people's COVID-19 knowledge contributes to greater adherence to infection prevention behaviors. Across February and May 2020 survey data, participants 55 years and older and those with higher educational background reported a higher average COVID-19 knowledge score. In addition, among the racial and ethnic categories, Black/African American and Native American/Alaska Native participants reported a lower average COVID-19 knowledge score than white participants-signaling the need to establish COVID-19 communication that is culturally-tailored and community-based. Overall, health care authorities must deliver clear and concise messaging about the importance of adhering to preventive health behaviors, even as COVID-19 vaccines become widely available to the general public. Health officials must also focus on increasing COVID-19 knowledge and dispelling misinformation.

Abstract
Using first-principles calculations, the geometry, electronic structure, optical and photocatalytic performance of blueP and XYO (X = Ti, Zr, Hf; Y = S, Se) monolayers and their corresponding van der Waal heterostructures in three possible stacking patterns, are investigated. BlueP and XYO (X = Ti, Zr, Hf; Y = S, Se) monolayers are indirect bandgap semiconductors. A tensile strain of 8(10)% leads to TiSeO(ZrSeO) monolayers transitioning to a direct bandgap of 1.30(1.61) eV. The calculated binding energy and AIMD simulation show that unstrained(strained) blueP and XYO (X = Ti, Zr, Hf; Y = S, Se) monolayers and their heterostructures are thermodynamically stable. Similar to the corresponding monolayers, blueP-XYO (X = Ti, Zr, Hf: Y = S, Se) vdW heterostructures in three possible stacking patterns are indirect bandgap semiconductors with staggered band alignment, except blueP-TiSeO vdW heterostructure, which signifies straddling band alignment. Absorption spectra show that optical transitions are dominated by excitons for blueP and XYO (X = Ti, Zr, Hf; Y = S, Se) monolayers and the corresponding vdW heterostructures. Both E VB and E CB in TiSO, ZrSO, ZrSeO and HfSO monolayers achieve energetically favorable positions, and therefore, are suitable for water splitting at pH = 0, while TiSeO and HfSeO monolayers showed good response for reduction and fail to oxidise water. All studied vdW heterostructures also show good response to any produced O2, while specific stacking reduces H+ to H2.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to adversely impact the United States (U.S.) socially, culturally, and economically. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between COVID-19 county death rates, risk perception, and U.S. adults’ voluntary behaviors—particularly physical distancing. Data were collected from CloudResearch/Qualtrics, Johns Hopkins University, the American Community Survey, and SafeGraph. Our results indicated that higher COVID-19 county death rates were associated with higher risk perceptions, leading to greater time spent at home. These findings will help public health officials identify strategies that best encourage voluntary health behaviors to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the occurrence of ESBL and colistin-resistant E. coli and its genotypic characterization and identification of virulence determinants in cases of bovine mastitis in three provinces of China. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five hundred and thirty-five milk samples presenting mastitis symptoms were screened for the presence of ESBL, colistin-resistant and different virulence genes. Susceptibility testing was identified by the micro-dilution method. Escherichia coli isolates were used to detect ESBL genes (blaCTX-M , blaSHV and blaTEM ) and colistin-resistant genes mcr-(1-9). Multiplex PCR approach was used for the detection of major blaCTX-M groups, different phylogroups and virulence genes. The clonal relationship was then evaluated with MLST, MLSA and PFGE. RESULTS Multi-drug resistance (MDR) was found in more than 85% of ESBL and colistin-resistant E. coli isolates. Genotypic characterization showed a dominance of the blaCTX-M-1 group, and the most prevalent alleles observed were blaCTX-M-28 (38·37%), blaCTX-M-14 (17·44%), blaCTX-M-66 (13·95%) and blaCTX-M-55 (10·46%). The targeted virulence genes were detected in 97·89% of isolates. Sequence types ST58 and ST410 were the most predominant (2/20 = 20%). The majority of the E. coli isolates carrying ESBL and mcr-1 were clonally unrelated. CONCLUSION High level of association was observed between ESBL-producing and COL-resistance in E. coli of bovine mastitis. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report which shows the genetic diversity of ESBL and mcr-1, and various virulent features of E. coli strains isolated from bovine clinical mastitis in three different provinces of China. The major carriers of the blaCTX-M-1 and blaCTX-M-9 were blaCTX-M-28 and blaCTX-M-14 alleles respectively. The association of ESBL-producing E. coli with mcr-1 is of particular concern.

Abstract
This study investigates the removal of Pb(II) using polymer matrix membranes, cellulose acetate/vinyl triethoxysilane modified graphene oxide and gum Arabic (GuA) membranes. These complexation-NF membranes were successfully synthesized via dissolution casting method for better transport phenomenon. The varied concentrations of GuA were induced in the polymer matrix membrane. The prepared membranes M-GuA2–M-GuA10 were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscope and bio-fouling studies. Thermal stability of the membranes was determined by thermogravimetric analysis under nitrogen atmosphere. Dead end nanofiltration was carried out to study the perm- selectivity of all the membranes under varied pressure and concentration of Pb(NO3)2. The complexation-NF membrane performances were significantly improved after the addition of GuA in the polymer matrix membrane system. M-GuA8 membrane showed optimum result of permeation flux 8.6 l m−2 h−1. Rejection of Pb(II) ions was observed to be around 97.6% at pH 9 for all the membranes due to electrostatic interaction between CA and Gum Arabic. Moreover, with the passage of time, the rate of adsorption was also increased up to 15.7 mg g−1 until steady state was attained. Gum Arabic modified CA membranes can open up new possibilities in enhancing the permeability, hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Central to the debate over school and child care reopening is whether children are efficient coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmitters and are likely to increase community spread when programs reopen. We compared COVID-19 outcomes in child care providers who continued to provide direct in-person child care during the first 3 months of the US COVID-19 pandemic with outcomes in those who did not. METHODS Data were obtained from US child care providers (N = 57 335) reporting whether they had ever tested positive or been hospitalized for COVID-19 (n = 427 cases) along with their degree of exposure to child care. Background transmission rates were controlled statistically, and other demographic, programmatic, and community variables were explored as potential confounders. Logistic regression analysis was used in both unmatched and propensity score-matched case-control analyses. RESULTS No association was found between exposure to child care and COVID-19 in both unmatched (odds ratio [OR], 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.82-1.38) and matched (OR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.73-1.21) analyses. In matched analysis, being a home-based provider (as opposed to a center-based provider) was associated with COVID-19 (OR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.14-2.23) but revealed no interaction with exposure. CONCLUSIONS Within the context of considerable infection mitigation efforts in US child care programs, exposure to child care during the early months of the US pandemic was not associated with an elevated risk for COVID-19 transmission to providers. These findings must be interpreted only within the context of background transmission rates and the considerable infection mitigation efforts implemented in child care programs.

Abstract
Vertical stacking of two-dimensional materials into layered van der Waals heterostructures has recently been considered as a promising candidate for photocatalytic and optoelectronic devices because it can combine the advantages of the individual 2D materials. Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (JTMDCs) have emerged as an appealing photocatalytic material due to the desirable electronic properties. Hence, in this work, we systematically investigate the geometric features, electronic properties, charge density difference, work function, band alignment and photocatalytic properties of ZnO-JTMDC heterostructures using first-principles calculations. Due to the different kinds of chalcogen atoms on both sides of JTMDC monolayers, two different possible stacking patterns of ZnO-JTMDC heterostructures have been constructed and considered. We find that all these stacking patterns of ZnO-JTMDC heterostructures are dynamically and energetically feasible. Moreover, both ZnO-MoSSe and ZnO-WSSe heterostructures are indirect band gap semiconductors and present type-I and type-II band alignments for model-I and model-II, respectively. The Rashba spin polarization of the ZnO-WSSe heterostructure for model-I is greater than that in the others. Furthermore, valence (conduction) band edge potentials are calculated to understand the photocatalytic behavior of these systems. Energetically favorable band edge positions in ZnO-Janus heterostructures make them suitable for water splitting at zero pH. We found that the ZnO-Janus heterostructures are promising candidates for water splitting with conduction and valence band edges positioned just outside of the redox interval.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chickpea is one of the major legume crops being cultivated in the arid and semi-arid regions of Pakistan. It is mainly grown on the marginal areas where, terminal drought stress is one of the serious threats to its productivity. For defining the appropriate selection criteria for screening drought tolerant chickpea genotypes, present study was conducted. Distinct chickpea germplasm was collected from different pulses breeding institutes of Pakistan and evaluated for drought tolerance at germination and early seedling stages, furthermore, at late vegetative growth stages physiochemical traits and multi-environment yield performance were also tested. RESULTS Chickpea genotypes under different environments, were significantly varied for different seedling traits, physio-chemical attributes and seed yield. Genotypes showing drought tolerance by performing better at an early seedling stages were not correspondingly high yielding. Screening for drought tolerance on seed yield basis is the most appropriate trait to develop the drought tolerant as well as high yielding chickpea genotypes. Results confirmed that traits of early growth stages were not reflecting the drought tolerance at terminal growth stages and also did not confer high yielding. NIAB-rain fed environment proved ideal in nature to screen the chickpea genotypes whereas, NIAB-lysimeter and Kalur Kot was least effective for selecting genotypes with high seed yield. Genotypes D0091-10, K010-10, D0085-10, K005-10, D0078-10, 08AG016, 08AG004, D0080-10, 09AG002, K002-10 and D0099-10 were high yielding and drought tolerant based on their performance across multiple hotspot environments. CONCLUSIONS The selected genotypes are intended for further evaluation for varietal approval to recommend for general cultivation on farmer fields in drought hit areas of Pakistan. Among physio-biochemical traits, higher proline, glycine betain, RWC and CMS were reflecting the higher capability to tolerate the drought stress in chickpea. Drought sensitive genotypes (K0037-10, 2204, K0052-10, 09AG015, K0042-10, CM709/06, K0068-10, K004-10, K0026-10 and K0063-10) were also identified in present study which were resourceful asset for using as contrasting parents in hybridization programs. To our knowledge, this is first report using an integrated approach involving, physio-biochemical indices, and multi-environmental yield trials, for comparison, screening and selection of chickpea genotypes for drought tolerance.

Abstract
Biochar pyrolyzed at 800 °C from banana (Bb) and orange peels (OPb) was applied for sorption of methylene blue (MB) dye in a batch system. OPb showed better affinity for MB dye than Bb with rapid increase in sorption capacity and percent removal for both biochars attaining equilibrium at 30 min. Chemisorption was suggested as the rate limiting step based on the best fitting of the pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics to the batch adsorption data. Linear increase in sorption capacity was seen as the initial MB dye concentration increased from 50 to 300 mg g-1 with a 40 % decrease in removal efficiency. An increase of 90 mg g-1 in sorption capacity for both biochars with a 15 and 30 % increase in removal efficiency for OPb and Bb, respectively, was observed after increasing the solution pH from 2 to 6 or 8. An increase in sorption capacity of about 150 mg g-1 was seen by increasing the biochar dose from 0.1 to 0.5 g. Langmuir isotherm model represented the adsorption data well as reflected by the high values of R2 (0.99) when using both biochar, while least representation of adsorption data was seen in H-J isotherm as estimated from very low R2 (0.6-0.66) for both types of biochar. An endothermic nature of MB dye sorption was suggested based on the linear increase in sorption capacity with an increase in solution temperature from 30 to 60 °C. This was further confirmed by the observed positive changes in standard entropy and standard enthalpy while negative values of Gibbs-free energies proposed the non-spontaneous natures of MB dye sorption on to both biochars. The effective sorption of MB dye demonstrated the potential of plant-based biochar as economically viable adsorbents for MB dye.

Abstract
Whitefly-transmitted viruses of the genus Begomovirus (the family Geminiviridae) have become a limiting factor for agricultural productivity in many warmer parts of the world. The economies of Pakistan and India have, since the early 1990s, suffered losses due to cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD). The disease is caused by begomoviruses, the most important of which at this time is cotton leaf curl Kokhran virus strain Burewala (CLCuKoV-Bu), and a disease-specific betasatellite, cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite (CLCuMuB). Efforts to minimize losses due to CLCuD rely mainly on the use of insecticides to kill the whitefly vector; no resistant cotton varieties are currently commercially available. The study described here has investigated RNA interference technology for its potential to yield resistance against CLCuKoV-Bu and three other begomoviruses; CLCuKoV, tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) and Pedilanthus leaf curl virus (PeLCV). Three fragments of the virion-sense V2 gene of CLCuKoV-Bu were transformed into Nicotiana benthamiana in antisense orientation and transgenic lines expressing virus-specific short RNAs were assessed for their ability to yield resistance. Only CLCuKoV-Bu with the V2 sequence closest to the promoter was resistant. Inoculation of CLCuKoV-Bu with CLCuMuB into transgenic plants did not significantly affect the outcome, although viral DNA was detected in number of plants, suggesting that the betasatellite may impair RNAi resistance. Overall the results indicate that targeting the 5' end of V2 gene using antisense-RNA has the potential to deliver resistance against begomoviruses and that RNAi-based resistance imparts some degree of resistance to heterologous viruses. Abstract
Adsorption of the hazardous dye malachite green (MG) by Acacia nilotica (AN) waste was investigated. Batch process variables for the adsorption of MG by AN were optimized. The mechanisms involved in the adsorption of MG by AN were explored using isotherms and kinetic models. The thermodynamic parameters were calculated to determine the spontaneity and thermal nature of the MG adsorption reaction. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of AN was found to be 113.26 mg/g at 30 °C. The MG adsorption data revealed that AN adsorbs MG by multilayer adsorption, as shown by the better fit of the data to the Freundlich and Halsey models (R2 = 0.99) rather than to the Langmuir model. Multilayer adsorption involves physisorption, which was confirmed by the E value (mean free energy of adsorption) of the Dubinin-Radushkevich model (6.52 kJ/mol). Surface diffusion was found to be the main driving force for MG adsorption by AN. The MG adsorption reaction was endothermic, based on the enthalpy, and was controlled by the entropy of the system in the T1 temperature range (30 to 40 °C), while the opposite trend was observed in the T2 range (40 to 50 °C). Moreover, MG adsorption by AN was found to be nonspontaneous at all temperatures.

Abstract
In situ tissue regeneration holds great promise for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering applications. However, to achieve control over long-term and localised presence of biomolecules, certain barriers must be overcome. The aim of this study was to develop electrospun scaffolds for the fabrication of artificial vascular grafts that can be remodelled within a host by endogenous cell recruitment. We fabricated scaffolds by mixing appropriate proportions of linear poly (l-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) and substance P (SP)-immobilised PLCL, using electrospinning to develop vascular grafts. Substance P was released in a sustained fashion from electrospun membranes for up to 30 d, as revealed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Immobilised SP remained bioactive and recruited human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in an in vitro Trans-well migration assay. The biocompatibility and biological performance of the scaffolds were evaluated by in vivo experiments involving subcutaneous scaffold implantations in Sprague-Dawley rats for up to 28 d followed by histological and immunohistochemical studies. Histological analysis revealed a greater extent of accumulative host cell infiltration and collagen deposition in scaffolds containing higher contents of SP than observed in the control group at both time points. We also observed the presence of a large number of laminin-positive blood vessels and Von Willebrand factor (vWF+) cells in the explants containing SP. Additionally, scaffolds containing SP showed the existence of CD90+ and CD105+ MSCs. Collectively, these findings suggest that the methodology presented here may have broad applications in regenerative medicine, and the novel scaffolding materials can be used for in situ tissue regeneration of soft tissues.

Abstract
A 2-degree-of-freedom internal model control strategy based on U-model is presented for an unknown multivariable nonlinear systems. The proposed algorithm focuses the case where the noise is added at the input of the system and makes use of a local disturbance rejector. The unknown multivariable nonlinear system is identified by the control oriented U-model and the inverse controller is established using Newton-Raphson method. The proposed algorithm is tested in real-time on a 2-link robot manipulator.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species trigger cellular responses by activation of stress-responsive mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathways. Reversal of MAPK activation requires the transcriptional induction of specialized cysteine-based phosphatases that mediate MAPK dephosphorylation. Paradoxically, oxidative stresses generally inactivate cysteine-based phosphatases by thiol modification and thus could lead to sustained or uncontrolled MAPK activation. Here we describe how the stress-inducible MAPK phosphatase, Sdp1, presents an unusual solution to this apparent paradox by acquiring enhanced catalytic activity under oxidative conditions. Structural and biochemical evidence reveals that Sdp1 employs an intramolecular disulphide bridge and an invariant histidine side chain to selectively recognize a tyrosine-phosphorylated MAPK substrate. Optimal activity critically requires the disulphide bridge, and thus, to the best of our knowledge, Sdp1 is the first example of a cysteine-dependent phosphatase that couples oxidative stress with substrate recognition. We show that Sdp1, and its paralogue Msg5, have similar properties and belong to a new group of phosphatases unique to yeast and fungal taxa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epilepsy is a common but widely misunderstood illness. Consequently, epileptics suffer from considerable stigmatization in society. Since no studies have detailed the misperceptions about epilepsy in our community, it is not possible to provide focused intervention aimed at eliminating this prejudice. PURPOSE To assess the knowledge and attitude regarding epilepsy in an adult population of a Karachi slum area. METHODS A face-to-face interview was conducted on 487 consenting adult non-epileptics (305 males; 182 females) who were conveniently sampled. Chi-square test was employed to calculate the variability in knowledge and attitude with demographic and other variables. RESULTS In all, 12.5% had never heard about epilepsy. Among the rest, 66.7% identified epilepsy as being non-infectious, while 28.2% were unaware of any treatment available for it. Among the other 71.8%, 62.7% were aware of the existence of anti-epileptic drugs. Religious/spiritual treatment was chosen as the most effective treatment by 33.1%. Males were more likely to identify epilepsy as being non-infectious (p=0.02). Nearly 18% of the respondents would not object to their child marrying an epileptic, 69.5% did not want to socially isolate the epileptics, 83.1% said epileptics could receive academic education, 85.6% said they could perform activities of daily life and 62.4% said they could become useful members of the society. Those who considered epilepsy to be infectious were more likely to carry negative attitudes towards epilepsy (p<0.01 with four attitudes). CONCLUSIONS Considerable gaps exist in the community's knowledge about epilepsy. Some of these may explain the prevalence of negative attitudes towards this ailment.

Abstract
Polymorphisms of paraoxonase gene (PON) cluster have been investigated in numerous studies for their association with myocardial infarction (MI) but the results have been conflicting. Epistasis and gene-environment interactions at this locus could possibly modulate susceptibility toward MI and account for the discrepancies. We carried out a case-control study (211 MI patients and 370 control subjects) to test association of PON cluster polymorphisms with MI, their interactions with each other and with smoking. Genotyping was performed by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism based assays. The Q192R, C-108T, and A148G polymorphisms were associated with MI. Two haplotypes consisting of C-108T, C311S, and A148G, having allele frequencies of 0.17 and 0.14 in the control population, predisposed to MI (global haplotype statistic chi2 = 34.74, df = 15, p = 0.0027). Multifactor dimensionality reduction analysis showed a significant three-locus model (p = 0.02) involving these three polymorphisms, suggesting a potential gene-gene interaction between PON1 and PON2. These polymorphisms also interacted with smoking, in a three-locus and a four-locus model (p = 0.01 and p = 0.05, respectively). Additionally, the R192 allele may advance the age-at-onset of MI. The PON cluster appears to be a susceptibility locus for MI in Pakistani population, and the susceptibility is modulated through gene-gene and gene-environment interactions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate changes in total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and triglycerides in serum of Pakistani patients with AMI due to age, gender, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, hypertension, and smoking, and also find out the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, "low HDL-cholesterol" and "isolated low-HDL cholesterol" in them. PATIENTS AND METHODS Serum samples from 451 consecutive AMI patients (250 from National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Karachi and 201 from Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology, Rawalpindi) were analyzed for total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides using kit methods. LDL-cholesterol was determined using the Friedewald formula. RESULTS Mean serum concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides in AMI patients were found to be 181 +/- 50 mg/dl, 35.7 +/- 11.3 mg/dl, 110 +/- 47 mg/dl and 177 +/- 127 mg/dl, respectively. Mean levels of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were not significantly affected by age, gender, BMI, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and smoking. Mean LDL-cholesterol concentration, however, was found to be significantly increased in diabetes mellitus (p=0.047), while age, gender, BMI, hypertension and smoking had no significant effect on the levels of this lipoprotein. Mean levels of triglycerides were significantly decreased in older patients (>50 years) compared to younger (<50 years) ones (p=0.019). Gender, BMI, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and smoking, however, had no effect on triglyceride levels The frequencies of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, "low HDL-cholesterol" and "isolated low-HDL-cholesterol" were found to be 30.6%, 30.1%, 48.6% and 34.1%, respectively. CONCLUSION High prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-cholesterol (which constitute a component of metabolic syndrome) in Pakistani AMI patients is suggestive that these two lipid abnormalities could be playing a major role in the development of atherosclerosis in Pakistani population.

Abstract
The authors describe a 49-year-old woman (R.K.) who presented with one year of progressive frontal lobe dysfunction, including signs of expressive aphasia. Signs of parkinsonism were absent until late in the clinical course. Neuropsychologic testing and neuroimaging studies are described. The patient died at age 55, after 7 years of symptoms. Family history was remarkable for a mother who died at the age of 45, after experiencing 7 years of progressive aphasia. R.K.'s brain showed asymmetric frontotemporal atrophy, which was more severe on the left side. Histopathologic analysis was remarkable for numerous tau-positive neurons with some classic-appearing Pick bodies and many ballooned neurons. Tau-positive glial cells were also present. The authors suggest that the abnormal tau aggregates are related to the symptoms experienced by affected members of this family.
