Abstract
In this work, we address hybrid-driven-based robust synchronization problem for multi-weighted complex dynamical networks with actuator saturation and deception attacks. The hybrid-triggered mechanism, which combines a switch between the event-triggered scheme and the time-triggered scheme, is often used to reduce the data transmission and the alleviate network burden. Further, the equivalent-input-disturbance technique is applied to eliminate the unknown disturbance effect of the addressed system. Moreover, a memory controller is designed under actuator saturation to ensure that the resultant augmented system is asymptotically synchronized even in the presence of deception attacks. Finally, three numerical examples are given to show the validity of the obtained theoretical results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prenatal antibiotic exposure and delivery mode may affect the gut microbiome in early life and influence the development of childhood asthma, but the combined effect of these two factors is unknown. OBJECTIVE To identify the individual and combined effects of prenatal antibiotic exposure and delivery mode on the development of asthma in children and the potential mechanisms underlying these associations. METHODS A total of 789 children were enrolled from the Cohort for Childhood Origin of Asthma and Allergic Diseases (COCOA) birth cohort study. Asthma was defined as physician-confirmed diagnosis with asthma symptoms in the previous 12 months at age 7. Information on the prenatal antibiotic exposure was obtained by mothers using questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used. Gut microbiota analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequencing of fecal specimens obtained at 6 months was undertaken for 207 infants. RESULTS Prenatal antibiotic exposure and cesarean section delivery (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 95% confidence interval [CI], 5.70 [1.25-22.81] and 1.57 [1.36-6.14], respectively) were associated with childhood asthma, especially synergistically when compared to the vaginal delivery-prenatal antibiotic exposure reference group (aOR, 7.35; 95% CI, 3.46-39.61; Interaction P=.033). Prenatal antibiotic exposure was associated with childhood asthma with aORs 21.79 and 27.03 for one and two or more exposures, respectively. Significant small-airway dysfunction (R5-R20 in impulse oscillometry) was observed with prenatal antibiotic exposure and cesarean-section delivery, compared to those with spontaneous delivery without prenatal antibiotic exposure. There was no significant difference in the diversity of gut microbiota among the four groups. However, the relative abundance of Clostridium was significantly increased in infants with prenatal antibiotic exposure and delivered via cesarean section. CONCLUSION Prenatal antibiotic exposure and delivery mode might modulate asthma development in children and small-airway dysfunction, potentially through early-life gut microbiota alterations.

Abstract
The rate of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection is estimated to be around 20% in Indonesia. Health promotion and health education are cost-effective strategies to supplement STH prevention and control programs. Existing studies suggest that quantitative tools for knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) are important to monitor effective community-based STH interventions. However, evidence is limited regarding the applicability of such tools. This study aims to identify the socio-demographic predictors for STH-related knowledge and practices and validate the quantitative tools in population use. A cross-sectional study design was conducted among residents of 16 villages in Central Java, Indonesia. Adult and child respondents were interviewed to assess general knowledge and practices in relation to STH. Two mixed effects models identified the significant factors in predicting knowledge and practice scores. The model predicted knowledge and practice scores were compared with the observed scores to validate the quantitative measurements developed in this study. Participants' socio-demographic variables were significant in predicting an individual's STH-related knowledge level and their hand washing and hygiene practices, taking into account household-level variability. Model validation results confirmed that the quantitative measurement tools were suitable for assessing STH associated knowledge and behaviour. The questionnaire developed in this study can be used to support school- and community-based health education interventions to maximize the effect of STH prevention and control programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Successful cryopreservation of bovine oocytes is very important for research and commercial applications. However, the survival and development rate of vitrified-thawed (VT) oocytes are lower than those of non-vitrified-thawed (non-VT) oocytes. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of adding hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) to the vitrification solution for bovine oocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS For vitrification, bovine metaphase II oocytes were pretreated with a solution containing 10% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 5 min, exposed to a solution containing 30% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 30 s, and then directly plunged into liquid nitrogen. RESULTS The survival rate of oocytes was significantly higher in the 50 HPC group than in the 0, 10, and 100 HPC groups. The reactive oxygen species level was lower in the non-VT and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of proapoptotic genes (Bax) were lower in the non-VT, 0, and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of antiapoptotic genes (BCl2) were higher in the non-VT than in the other groups. The development rates of embryos (day 8) obtained via parthenogenetic activation (PA) were determined in the non-VT, 0 HPC, and 50 HPC groups. The cleavage rate was significantly higher in the non-VT group. CONCLUSION Supplementation of vitrification solution with HPC improves the survival of VT bovine oocytes and the development capacity of embryos derived from these oocytes via PA. doi.org/10.54680/fr23110110212.

Abstract
PURPOSE Atopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergy (FA) are associated with respiratory comorbidities, in the concept of 'atopic march.' However, children with AD and a coexisting FA have various disease courses, and the mechanism of atopic march remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether the phenotype of AD with coexisting FA in early life affected asthma or allergic rhinitis (AR) in school children. METHODS A total of 1,579 children from the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC) cohort were followed-up in 2013. The participants diagnosed with AD in this cohort were classified by the age of AD onset and persistence as well as FA history. We compared the presence of comorbidities-asthma and rhinitis-among different AD phenotypes. RESULTS Asthma and AR with current symptoms within 12 months at age 6-8 years were associated with early-onset persistent AD phenotype, regardless of coexisting FA. AD with FA conferred a higher risk of recent wheezing at 8 years of age than AD without FA (adjusted odds ratio, 8.09; 95% confidence interval, 2.54-25.76). Children with early-onset persistent AD with FA manifested a distinctive trajectory with a higher prevalence of wheezing and AR at age 5-8 years than those without AD. CONCLUSIONS AD with FA in early life is strongly associated with asthma and AR in school children, and the early-onset persistent AD with FA had a strong additive effect on the risk of asthma at school age. Classifying AD phenotypes regarding FA in early life will help predict and prevent asthma and AR in school children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The level of pollen in Korea has increased over recent decades. Research suggests that oral allergy syndrome (OAS) may be more frequent in childhood than previously recognized. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of OAS in children aged 6-10 years from a general-population-based birth cohort. METHODS We analyzed 930 children from the cohort for childhood origin of asthma and allergic diseases (COCOA). Allergic diseases were diagnosed annually by pediatric allergists. The skin prick tests were performed with 14 common inhalant allergens and four food allergens for the general population of children aged 3 and 7 years. RESULTS Of the 930 eligible children, 44 (4.7%) aged 6-10 years were diagnosed with OAS. The mean age at onset was 6.74 years. OAS prevalence was 7.2% among children with allergic rhinitis (AR) and 19.1% among those with pollinosis, depending on comorbidity. OAS was more prevalent in schoolchildren with atopic dermatitis, food allergy, and sensitization to food allergens and grass pollen in early childhood. In schoolchildren with AR, only a history of food allergy until the age of 3 years increased the risk of OAS (aOR 2.971, 95% CI: 1.159-7.615). CONCLUSION Food allergy and food sensitization in early childhood were associated with OAS in schoolchildren with AR. Further study is required to elucidate the mechanism by which food allergy in early childhood affects the development of OAS.

Abstract
This article proposes three new methods to enlarge the feasible region for guaranteeing stability for generalized neural networks having time-varying delays based on the Lyapunov method. First, two new zero equalities in which three states are augmented are proposed and inserted into the results of the time derivative of the constructed Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals for the first time. Second, inspired by the Wirtinger-based integral inequality, new Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals are introduced. Finally, by utilizing the relationship among the augmented vectors and from the original equation, newly augmented zero equalities are established and Finsler's lemma are applied. Through three numerical examples, it is verified that the proposed methods can contribute to enhance the allowable region of maximum delay bounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gut microbiota dysbiosis is linked to the development and responses of the immune system and can play an important role in the onset of allergic diseases including atopic dermatitis (AD). This study investigated the association between host genetics and the gut microbiota in AD. METHODS A global gene expression profiling of the gut epithelial colonocytes, genetic variations analysis, and the gut microbial composition analysis were performed. RESULTS This study identified the upregulation of PTGR2 (p = .028), a gene involved in prostaglandin catalysis and inflammatory responses, as a potential risk factor for AD. In subsequent fine mapping analysis using 17 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of PTGR2 in 864 Korean subjects (420 AD patients and 444 unaffected controls), several SNPs and haplotypes showed significant associations with AD and its SCORing AD (SCORAD) values (p = .002). To investigate host-microbial interactions, further gut microbiota data and genotypes were obtained from an independent cohort of 176 subjects (91 AD patients and 85 controls). From correlation analysis, a significantly negative association between SNP and Bifidobacterium abundance was observed in AD patients (p = .005). In additional observations of PTGR2-associated downstream molecules, NRF2 (p = .004) and several antioxidant genes (GSTT1, GCLC, GPX1; p < .05) showed significantly reduced expression in AD patients. CONCLUSIONS Our current findings suggest that the interaction between PTGR2 dysregulated expression and a Bifidobacterium abundance affects a higher risk of AD and a more severe onset.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation reporting is a structured communication tool. In other studies of simulation-based education, learning was found to increase with increases in the level of flow during scenarios. Also, communication using SBAR was found to facilitate more focus on clinical situations. However, the generalizability of those findings in nursing education and the specific benefits of combining SBAR with simulation remain unclear. OBJECTIVES The aims of this study are to incorporate SBAR reporting into simulation-based nurse education, and measure its effects on the students' flow, communication competence, and communication self-efficacy among nursing students, to collect basic data for the development of effective nursing curricula. DESIGN This study used a non-equivalent, quasi-experimental pre-post parallel design. SETTING The intervention was administered in a simulation center at a nursing school in South Korea. PARTICIPANTS One hundred and twenty fourth-year nursing students were recruited through convenience sampling. METHODS The participants were quasi-randomly allocated to the control (n = 52) and SBAR (n = 68) groups. The integrated simulation course was conducted twice each week. Learning and reporting SBAR was included as a component of simulation-based education for the intervention group in each session (three scenarios). The dependent variables were communication competence, communication self-efficacy, and flow in the simulation. RESULTS SBAR did not affect communication competence or communication self-efficacy in simulation-based education. In contrast, while flow increased in both groups, the increase was greater in the SBAR group. CONCLUSIONS SBAR can increase nursing students' flow in simulations. Further studies should focus on how SBAR during simulation-based education affects nursing students' practical competency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Successful cryopreservation of bovine oocytes is very important for research and commercial applications. However, the survival and development rate of vitrified-thawed (VT) oocytes are lower than those of non-vitrified-thawed (non-VT) oocytes. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of adding hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) to the vitrification solution for bovine oocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS For vitrification, bovine metaphase II oocytes were pretreated with a solution containing 10% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 5 min, exposed to a solution containing 30% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 30 s, and then directly plunged into liquid nitrogen. RESULTS The survival rate of oocytes was significantly higher in the 50 HPC group than in the 0, 10, and 100 HPC groups. The reactive oxygen species level was lower in the non-VT and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of proapoptotic genes (Bax) were lower in the non-VT, 0, and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of antiapoptotic genes (BCl2) were higher in the non-VT than in the other groups. The development rates of embryos (day 8) obtained via parthenogenetic activation (PA) were determined in the non-VT, 0 HPC, and 50 HPC groups. The cleavage rate was significantly higher in the non-VT group. CONCLUSION Supplementation of vitrification solution with HPC improves the survival of VT bovine oocytes and the development capacity of embryos derived from these oocytes via PA. doi.org/10.54680/fr23110110212.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ruminococcus gnavus (R. gnavus) are mucin-degrading gut bacteria that play a key role in the early colonization of the gut by serving as endogenous sources of nutrients. They can also influence immune development. We had previously reported a lower abundance of R. gnavus in infants with atopic dermatitis (AD) compared with that in healthy subjects. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of orally administered R. gnavus on antibiotic treatment-induced gut dysbiosis (and the underlying mechanism) in a mouse model of AD. METHODS Four-week-old female BALB/C mice were administered antibiotic cocktails for 2 weeks. R. gnavus was orally administered throughout the study duration. At 6 weeks of age, AD was induced by epidermal sensitization with ovalbumin. AD phenotypes and systemic and gut immune responses were investigated. RESULTS Orally administered R. gnavus significantly reduced AD-associated parameters (i.e., transepidermal water loss, clinical score, total serum immunoglobulin (Ig) E level, OVA-specific IgE level, and skin inflammation). R. gnavus treatment also resulted in significant downregulation of T helper 2-related cytokine mRNA and upregulation of interleukin (IL)-10 and Foxp3 in the skin. The population of CD4+ FOXP3+ T cells in mesenteric- and skin-draining lymph nodes and butyrate levels in the cecum increased in R. gnavus-administered AD mice. CONCLUSIONS Immune modulation by orally administered R. gnavus may alleviate AD symptoms through the enhancement of regulatory T-cell counts and short-chain fatty acids production in AD mice.

Abstract
This work investigates the stability and dissipativity problems for neural networks with time-varying delay. By the construction of new augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals based on integral inequality and the use of zero equality approach, three improved results are proposed in the forms of linear matrix inequalities. And, based on the stability results, the dissipativity analysis for NNs with time-varying delays was investigated. Through some numerical examples, the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed results are shown by comparing the existing works.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) is increasing worldwide. Prenatal particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm (PM2.5) and maternal anxiety during pregnancy has been suggested as a potential causes of AD. This study investigated the effects of prenatal PM2.5 and maternal anxiety on AD and identified the critical period of PM2.5 exposure for AD in infants. METHODS This study included 802 children from the COCOA birth cohort study with follow-up data at 1 year of age. PM2.5 was estimated by land-use regression models and prenatal anxiety was measured with a questionnaire. AD was diagnosed by doctor at 1 year of age. Logistic regression analysis and Bayesian distributed lag interaction models were applied. RESULTS Higher PM2.5 during the first trimester of pregnancy, higher prenatal maternal anxiety, and male gender were associated with AD at 1 year of age (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] and 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.86 [1.08-3.19], 1.58 [1.01-2.47], and 1.54 [1.01-2.36], respectively). Higher PM2.5 during the first trimester and higher maternal anxiety during pregnancy showed an additive effect on the risk of AD (aOR: 3.13; 95% CI: 1.56-6.28). Among boys exposed to higher maternal anxiety during pregnancy, gestational weeks 5-8 were the critical period of PM2.5 exposure for the development of AD. CONCLUSIONS Higher PM2.5 exposure during gestational weeks 5-8 increased the probability of AD in infancy, especially in boys with higher maternal anxiety. Avoiding PM2.5 exposure and maternal anxiety from the first trimester may prevent infant AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with certain gene variants, the rapidly increasing incidence of AD suggests that environmental factors contribute to disease development. In this study, we investigated the association of AD incidence and phenotype with antibiotic exposure within 6 months of age, considering the dose administered and genetic risk. METHODS This study included 1637 children from the COCOA cohort. Pediatric allergists assessed the presence of AD at each visit and obtained information about antibiotic exposure for more than 3 days. IL-13 (rs20541) polymorphism was genotyped by the TaqMan method. We stratified the AD phenotypes into four groups and used multinomial logistic regression models for analysis. RESULTS Antibiotic exposure within 6 months of age was found to increase the risk of AD within 3 years of life (aOR = 1.40; 95% CI, 1.09-1.81) in dose-dependent manner. Antibiotic exposure more than twice increased the risk of the early-persistent AD phenotype (aOR = 2.50; 95% CI, 1.35-4.63). There was a weak interaction between genetic polymorphisms and environmental factors on the development of AD (p for interaction = 0.06). Children with the IL-13 (rs20541) GA + AA genotype have a higher risk of the early-persistent AD phenotype when exposed to antibiotics more than twice than those with the IL-13 (rs20541) GG genotype and without exposure to antibiotics (aOR = 4.73; 95% CI, 2.01-11.14). CONCLUSION Antibiotic exposure within 6 months was related to the incidence of early-persistent AD and a dose-dependent increase in the incidence of AD in childhood, whose effect was modified by the IL-13 (rs20541) genotype.

Abstract
Prenatal particulate matter <2.5 μm (PM2.5) is associated with adverse birth growth. However, the longitudinal growth impacts have been little studied, and no mechanistic relationships have been described. We investigated the association between prenatal PM2.5 exposure and growth trajectories, and the possible role of epigenetics. We enrolled 1313 neonates with PM2.5 data measured by ordinary kriging from the COhort for Childhood Origin of Asthma and allergic diseases, followed up at 1, 3, and 5 years to evaluate growth. Differential DNA methylation and pyrosequencing of cord blood leukocytes was evaluated according to the prenatal PM2.5 levels and birth weight (BW). PM2.5 exposure during the second trimester (T2) caused the lowest BW in both sexes, further adjusted for indoor PM2.5 levels [female, aOR 1.39 (95% CI 1.05-1.83); male, aOR 1.36 (95% CI 1.04-1.79)]. Bayesian distributed lag models with indoor PM2.5 adjustments revealed a sensitive window for BW effects at 10-26 weeks gestation, but only in females. Latent class mixture models indicated that a persistently low weight-for-height percentile trajectory was more prevalent in the highest PM2.5 exposure quartile at T2 in females, compared to a persistently high trajectory (36.5% vs. 20.3%, P = 0.022). Also, in the females only, the high PM2.5 and low BW neonates showed significantly greater ARRDC3 methylation changes. ARRDC3 methylation was also higher only in females with low weight at 5 years of age. Higher fetal PM2.5 exposure during T2 may cause a decreased growth trajectory, especially in females, mediated by ARRDC3 hyper-methylation-associated energy metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is still debatable whether dog ownership during early childhood is a risk factor for the development of allergic diseases. OBJECTIVE We investigated the association of dog ownership in early life with sensitization and asthma in childhood. METHODS Data from the Cohort for Childhood Origin of Asthma and Allergic diseases were used to investigate the association between dog ownership at any time from pregnancy to 1 year of age and sensitization to aeroallergens at 3 and 7 years old, bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), and asthma at 7 years old. We analyzed the cytokine levels in cord blood (CB) and indoor environmental measurement concentrations in the mother's residence obtained at 36 weeks of pregnancy. RESULTS Sensitization to dogs at age 3 and 7 did not differ between dog ownership and nonownership, but dog ownership during early life decreased the risk of sensitization to aeroallergens at age 7 (aOR = 0.44, 95% CI 0.21-0.90). Dog ownership significantly increased the risk of nonatopic BHR (aOR = 2.86; 95% CI 1.32-6.21). In addition, dog ownership was associated with asthma, especially nonatopic asthma at 7 years old (aOR = 2.73, 95% CI 1.02-7.32; aOR = 7.05, 95% CI 1.85-26.90, respectively). There were no significant differences in the concentrations of IL-13 or interferon-γ in CB or indoor environmental measurements according to dog ownership during pregnancy. CONCLUSION Early-life dog exposure in this birth cohort has been shown to reduce atopy but increase the risk of nonatopic BHR and nonatopic asthma at 7 years old.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: As there had been no reduction in the TB burden in South Korea since 2000, a public-private mix (PPM) strategy was launched in 2011. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reasons for lost to follow-up (LTFU) among TB patients and their clinical characteristics.METHOD: A multicentre, cross-sectional study based on in-depth interviews with patients and their families by TB specialist nurses was conducted. Patients who were reported with a final outcome of LTFU in 2015-2017 at all PPM hospitals across the country were enrolled. Enrolled patients were classified into six subgroups by age and three major reasons for LTFU (adverse effects, refusal of treatment, marginalisation) and their clinical features were compared.RESULTS: Among 780 patients, those who were lost to follow-up due to adverse effects accounted for the largest proportion (n = 387). LTFU in those aged <65 years who refused treatment (n = 189) and those aged <65 years who were marginalised (n = 108) were related to having smear-positive TB and a previous history of unfavourable outcomes.CONCLUSION: To reduce LTFU in South Korea, comprehensive strategies, including management of adverse effects, systematic counselling and education, should be implemented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sensitization to the house dust mite (HDM) plays important roles in the development of allergic rhinitis (AR). Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is a key initiator of the innate immune system upon exposure to environmental factors. OBJECTIVE The present study investigated the independent and interaction effects of HDM sensitization and TLR4 rs1927911 polymorphism on AR and its prognosis in children. METHODS This study included 2,929 children (mean age, 7.8 yrs) from the Children's HEalth and Environmental Research study (CHEER), a prospective study with a 2-year-interval for 4 years. An ISAAC questionnaire was used with skin prick tests in all subjects. TaqMan genotyping was performed for TLR4 (rs1927911) polymorphism in 1,024 children. RESULTS HDM sensitization increased risk of current AR (aOR, 2.50; 95% CI, 1.41-4.41; P for interaction = 0.005), current asthma at follow-up (aOR, 4.63; 95% CI, 2.41-8.88; P for interaction < 0.001) and allergic march (aOR, 2.57; 95% CI, 1.06-6.22; P for interaction = 0.002) by interacting with genotypes of TLR4 (rs1927911). HDM sensitization increased risk of persistence (aOR, 4.17; 95% CI, 1.77-9.83) and new diagnosis of AR (aOR, 2.48; 95% CI, 1.10-5.61), new sensitization to inhalant allergens (aOR, 10.67; 95% CI, 5.83-19.54), and new development of bronchial hyper-responsiveness (aOR, 5.29; 95% CI, 2.29-12.21) in children with CC genotype of TLR4 rs1927911. CONCLUSIONS HDM sensitization affects AR and its prognosis by interacting with TLR4 rs1957911 polymorphism. The preventive and therapeutic strategies for AR in children need to be targeted in accordance with genetic susceptibility with HDM sensitization.

Abstract
Purpose Interleukin (IL)-17 variants and perturbations in the gut microbiota may influence the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, unifying principles for variants of host and microbe interaction remains unclear. We sought to investigate whether IL-17 variants and gut microbiota affect the development of AD in infancy. Methods Composition of the gut microbiota was analyzed in fecal samples from 99 normal healthy and 61 AD infants at 6 months of age. The associations between total immunoglobulin E (IgE), the scoring atopic dermatitis (SCORAD), short-chain fatty acids, transcriptome and functional profile of the gut measured in these subjects and Streptococcus were analyzed. IL-6 and IL-8 in the human intestinal epithelial cell line (HIEC-6) were measured after stimulation of IL-17 and Streptococcus mitis. Results In this study, Streptococcus was enriched in infants with AD and was higher in those with the GA + AA of IL-17 (rs2275913) variant. Streptococcus was positively correlated with IgE and SCORAD in infants with AD and GA + AA of IL-17. Butyrate and valerate were negatively correlated with Streptococcus and were decreased in infants with AD and GA + AA. Bacterial genes for oxidative phosphorylation induced by reduced colonization of Clostridium were decreased compared with normal and GG. In transcriptome analysis, lactate dehydrogenase A-like 6B was higher in infants with AD compared with healthy infants. IL-6 and IL-8 were increased in IL-17 and/or S. mitis-stimulated HIEC-6 cells. Conclusions These findings suggest that increased Streptococcus and A allele of IL-17 (rs2275913) may contribute to the pathogenesis of AD via modulation of the immune system in infancy.

Abstract
Humidifier disinfectants (HDs) exposure has now been associated with acute lung injury and pulmonary fibrosis; polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) has been confirmed to cause severe lung inflammation and fibrosis in mice. Recent evidence also indicates that HDs exposure increases the asthma risk in children, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the effects of PHMG exposure on asthma in mice and the potential underlying mechanisms. BALB/c mice were intranasally administered PHMG (0.1 mg/kg/day; 5 days per week) during 2 episodes of ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and were then challenged with 1% OVA by inhalation. Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), inflammatory cell influx into bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, serum total and OVA-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels, and histopathological changes in the lung were analyzed. The levels of asthma-related cytokines and chemokines were assayed in the lung tissues to evaluate possible mechanisms. Exposure to PHMG following OVA sensitization and challenge significantly enhanced BHR, inflammatory cell counts in BAL fluid, airway inflammation, and total serum IgE levels in the asthma mouse model. In addition, the levels of chemokine ligand (CCL) 11 and serpine F1/pigment epithelium-derived factor (SERPINF1) were significantly elevated in the lungs of these mice compared to those in the control and OVA-treated only groups. Our findings suggest that PHMG can enhance the development of allergic responses and lung inflammation via CCL11- and SERPINF1-induced signaling in a mouse model of asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of prenatal particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ranging from 0.1 μm to 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and vitamin D on atopic dermatitis (AD) phenotypes have not been evaluated. DNA methylation and cord blood (CB) vitamin D could represent a plausible link between prenatal PM2.5 exposure and AD in an offspring. OBJECTIVE To determine the critical windows of prenatal PM2.5 exposure on the AD phenotypes, if vitamin D modulated these effects, and if placental DNA methylation mediated these effects on AD in offspring. METHODS Mother-child pairs were enrolled from the birth cohort of the Cohort for Childhood Origin of Asthma and allergic diseases (COCOA) study. PM2.5 was estimated by land-use regression models, and CB vitamin D was measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay. AD was identified by the parental report of a physician's diagnosis. We defined the following 4 AD phenotypes according to onset age (by the age of 2 years) and persistence (by the age of 3 years): early-onset transient and persistent, late onset, and never. Logistic regression analysis and Bayesian distributed lag interaction model were used. DNA methylation microarray was analyzed using an Infinium Human Methylation EPIC BeadChip (Illumina, San Diego, California) in placenta. RESULTS PM2.5 exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy, especially during 6 to 7 weeks of gestation, was associated with early-onset persistent AD. This effect increased in children with low CB vitamin D, especially in those with PM2.5 exposure during 3 to 7 weeks of gestation. AHRR (cg16371648), DPP10 (cg19211931), and HLADRB1 (cg10632894) were hypomethylated in children with AD with high PM2.5 and low CB vitamin D. CONCLUSION Higher PM2.5 during the first trimester of pregnancy and low CB vitamin D affected early-onset persistent AD, and the most sensitive window was 6 to 7 weeks of gestation. Placental DNA methylation mediated this effect.

Abstract
Asthma is a complex disease, with various genetic and environmental factors implicated in its development. Sensitization to the house dust mite (HDM) is closely linked with the development of respiratory allergies, including asthma. However, some children sensitized to HDM do not complain of any symptoms of respiratory allergies, even though HDM is correlated with an increased risk for developing asthma, suggesting the involvement of other factors. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α is associated with the pathophysiologies of asthma in combination with its genetic polymorphism. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the associations between sensitization to HDM, polymorphism of TNF-α rs1800629, and asthma/bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR). Our results revealed that sensitization to HDM is associated with asthma diagnosis in lifetime, current asthma, and BHR in Korean children. Furthermore, the genetic polymorphism of TNF-a rs1800629 was found to modify and interact with these associations. This study suggests that prevention strategies for childhood asthma need to be targeted according to genetic susceptibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To improve and support medication adherence among patients with chronic diseases, especially for long-term medication, it is important to consider both their relationship with healthcare providers and their lifestyle. We tested the reliability and validity of a modified 12-item Medication Adherence Scale. METHODS We revised a 14-item measure of medication adherence, created in 2009, to a more concise and clear 12-item version, and we verified the reliability and validity of the 12-item scale. We included 328 patients with chronic diseases participating in the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program in Japan from 2011 to 2014. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess whether the four factors assessed were the same as the previous 14-item Medication Adherence Scale. Cronbach's coefficient alpha was used to assess internal consistency reliability, and the relationships between patient demographic characteristics and medication adherence were compared with previous studies. RESULTS The 12 items were categorized into the four factors "medication compliance", "collaboration with healthcare providers", "willingness to access and use information about medication", and "acceptance to take medication and how taking medication fits patient's lifestyle". Confirmatory factor analysis showed χ2/df = 2.6, CFI = 0.94, and RMSEA = 0.069. Cronbach's alpha for the 12-item scale was 0.78. Cronbach's alpha for the four subscales was 0.74, 0.81, 0.67, and 0.45. Higher medication adherence was significantly associated with being a female patient, living with someone else, and age 40-49 years versus age 20-29 years. These relationships were the same as in previous studies. CONCLUSIONS We modified our original 14-item scale to a 12-item Medication Adherence Scale for patients with chronic diseases, which considers their relationship with healthcare providers and lifestyle. Refinement might be needed because of the relatively low reliability of subscales. However, the modified scale is expected to contribute to more effective self-management of medication and to improving medication adherence, particularly among patients with chronic diseases who require long-term medication not only in Japan but also in other countries.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We conducted a prospective randomized, multicentre study to compare short arm and long arm plaster casts for the treatment of stable distal radius fracture in patients older than 55 years. We randomly assigned patients over the age of 55 years who had stable distal radius fracture to either a short arm or long arm plaster cast at the first review 1 week after their injury. Radiographic and clinical follow-up was conducted at 1, 3, 5, 12 and 24 weeks following their injury. Also, degree of disability caused by each cast immobilization was evaluated at the patient's visit to remove the cast. There were no significant differences in radiological parameters between the groups except for volar tilt. Despite these differences in volar tilt, neither functional status as measured by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand, nor visual analogue scale was significantly different between the groups. However, the mean score of disability caused by plaster cast immobilization and the incidence rate of shoulder pain were significantly higher in patients who had a long plaster cast. Our findings suggest that a short arm cast is as effective as a long arm cast for stable distal radius fractures in the elderly. Furthermore, it is more comfortable and introduces less restriction on daily activities. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE II.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Bone mineral density (BMD) of offspring was significantly associated with their parents' BMD. Parental BMD Z-score ≤-1 was a significant predictor for BMD Z-score ≤-1 in their offspring. Peak bone mass acquisition during early adulthood is more substantially influenced by genetic factors rather than lifestyle or environmental factors. INTRODUCTION A person's BMD is affected by both genetic and environmental factors. Family history of osteoporosis or fragility fracture is a well-known risk factor for low bone mass or fracture. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the familial association of BMD between parents and offspring in Korean population. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study based on the data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) conducted from 2008 to 2011. A total of 5947 subjects (3135 parents and 2812 offspring) were included. RESULTS In age-adjusted partial correlation analyses, all BMD values acquired from the lumbar spine, femur neck, total hip, and whole body showed significant associations between parents and offspring. Among these associations, whole-body BMD showed the strongest relationship between offspring and parents. The narrow-sense heritability of BMD ranged from 0.203 to 0.542 in male offspring and from 0.396 to 0.689 in female offspring. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that offspring's BMD was independently associated with BMD of both parents after adjusting for covariates. Lifestyle or environmental factors including dietary calcium intake, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, regular exercise, current smoking, and alcohol intake showed only moderate or no associations with BMD. In multiple logistic regression analyses in offspring aged 19-25 years, the son's risk of having BMD Z-score ≤-1 was associated with both parents' BMD Z-score ≤-1, while the daughter's risk was only associated with maternal BMD Z-score ≤-1. CONCLUSIONS Our findings confirm the strong familial association of BMD between parents and offspring in Korean population and suggest that peak bone mass acquisition during early adulthood is more substantially influenced by genetic factors rather than lifestyle or environmental factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence of ethambutol (EMB) induced optic neuropathy prescribed at a relatively low dose of ≤ 15 mg/kg/day for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) or Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease. DESIGN Patients diagnosed with TB or MAC lung disease received multidrug regimens including EMB at a single institution from August 2003 to July 2009. Visual monitoring was performed at baseline and at regular follow-up. The incidence of EMB-induced visual disturbances was evaluated. RESULTS Of the 415 patients included in the study, three (0.7%) developed toxic optic neuropathy over the 6-year period. Of the 289 patients prescribed a dose of ≤ 15 mg/kg/day EMB, only one (0.3%) developed toxic optic neuropathy. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of EMB-induced optic neuropathy among Koreans is estimated to be 0.7%, and can be reduced with lower doses of EMB.

Abstract
We performed 118 percutaneous releases of the locked trigger digits in an office setting using a specially designed knife. Thirty-five digits were locked in flexion, 79 digits in extension and the remaining four were fixed in a semiflexed position. Successful percutaneous release was achieved for 107 digits (91%), with the remaining 11 digits requiring an open surgical procedure. Although there were no persistent triggering in 98 digits with a follow-up of at least 6 months, painful stiffness at the interphalangeal joints remained in ten digits despite of physical therapy. No neurovascular injury occurred. We suggest that a locked trigger digit can be successfully released with the percutaneous technique.

Abstract
To prevent diseases associated with inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene, people needing latrines and behavioural interventions must be identified. We compared two indicators that could be used to identify those people. Indicator 1 of household latrine coverage was a simple Yes/No response to the question “Does your household have a latrine?” Indicator 2 was more comprehensive, combining questions about defecation behaviour with observations of latrine conditions. Using a standardized procedure and questionnaire, trained research assistants collected data from 6,599 residents of 16 rural villages in Indonesia. Indicator 1 identified 30.3% as not having a household latrine, while Indicator 2 identified 56.0% as using unimproved sanitation. Indicator 2 thus identified an additional 1,710 people who were missed by Indicator 1. Those 1,710 people were of lower socioeconomic status (p < 0.001), and a smaller percentage practiced appropriate hand-washing (p < 0.02). These results show how a good indicator of need for sanitation and hygiene interventions can combine evidences of both access and use, from self-reports and objective observation. Such an indicator can inform decisions about sanitation-related interventions and about scaling deworming programmes up or down. Further, a comprehensive and locally relevant indicator allows improved targeting to those most in need of a hygiene-behaviour intervention.

Abstract
Among children, infections with soil-transmitted helminths (STH) can cause anemia, impaired growth, and absence from school. Sustainable control of STH infection requires that appropriate latrines be integrated with health-promotion education. We report a pilot study of the effects of a combined latrine-education intervention in Central Java, Indonesia. The participants were 99 children (3-13 years old) in two villages (intervention and control) south of Semarang city. Stool samples were collected from the children and were examined for the presence of helminth eggs. After baseline data were collected, latrines were constructed and health education was given in the intervention village. Then, in both villages, all children who had STH infection at baseline were given 400 mg of albendazole. Eight months later, follow-up stool samples were collected and examined. In both villages, 20% of the children had STH infection at baseline. At follow-up, the incidence of STH infection was much lower in the intervention village than in the control village (4.0% vs. 20.4%; p<0.02). The results of this small pilot study give some confidence that a scaled-up study involving many more children and cluster-randomization of the intervention will be feasible and could provide more conclusive evidence of the intervention's effectiveness.

Abstract
Malignant struma ovarii is extremely rare and difficult to diagnose histologically, particularly in cases of follicular carcinoma. This case study is intended to describe three cases of follicular proliferative lesion arising in struma ovarii that we experienced. The first case was clearly malignant given the clinical picture of multiple recurrences, but there was little histological evidence of malignancy. Our second case featured architectural and cellular atypia and necrosis and was diagnosed as malignant despite the absence of vascular and stromal invasion. Our third case exhibited solid microfollicular proliferation without any definite evidence of malignancy (even the molecular data was negative); however, we could not completely exclude malignant potential after conducting a literature review. In cases such as our third case, it has been previously suggested that a diagnostic term recognizing the low-grade malignant potential, such as “proliferative stromal ovarii” or “follicular proliferative lesion arising in the stromal ovarii” would be appropriate.

Abstract
Bovine somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) using vitrified-thawed (VT) oocytes has been studied; however, the cloning efficiency of these oocytes is not comparable with that of nonvitrified (non-V) fresh oocytes. This study sought to optimize the survival and cryopreservation of VT oocytes for SCNT. Co-culture with feeder cells that had been preincubated for 15 h significantly improved the survival of VT oocytes and their in vitro developmental potential following SCNT in comparison to co-culture with feeder cells that had been preincubated for 2, 5, or 24 h (p<0.05). Spindle assessment via the Oosight Microscopy Imaging System and microtubule staining revealed that vitrified metaphase II oocytes (VT group) were not suitable for SCNT. However, enucleating and/or activating oocytes prior to freezing enhanced their developmental potential and suitability for SCNT. The cloning efficiency of the enucleated-activated-vitrified-thawed (EAVT) group (21.6%) was better than that of the other vitrification groups [enucleated-vitrified-thawed (EVT) group, 13.7%; VT group, 15.0%; p<0.05] and was comparable with that of the non-V group (25.9%). The reactive oxygen species level was significantly lower in the EAVT group than in the other vitrification groups (p<0.05). mRNA levels of maternal genes (ZAR1, BMP15, and NLRP5) and a stress gene (HSF1) were lower in the vitrification groups than in the non-V group (p<0.05), whereas the level of phospho-p44/42 mitogen-activated protein kinase did not differ among the groups. Among the vitrification groups, blastocysts in the EAVT group had the best developmental potential, as judged by their high mRNA expression of developmental potential-related genes (POU5f1, Interferon-tau, and SLC2A5) and their low expression of proapoptotic (CASP3) and stress (Hsp70) genes. This study demonstrates that SCNT using bovine frozen-thawed oocytes can be successfully achieved using optimized vitrification and co-culture techniques.

Abstract
Background: A few recent studies have demonstrated a possible role of transglutaminase 2 (TG2) in tumorigenesis or progression of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The aim of this study was to examine TG2 expression and its clinicopathologic significance in a large number of human clear cell RCCs (CCRCCs). Methods: We analyzed 638 CCRCC patients who underwent partial or radical nephrectomy between 1995 and 2005. The expression of TG2 was determined by immunohistochemistry and categorized into four groups, according to staining intensity: negative (0), mild (1+), moderate (2+), and strong (3+). Results: TG2 staining intensity was negative in 8.5% of CCRCC (n=54), 1+ in 32.6% (n=208), 2+ in 50.5% (n=322), and 3+ in 8.5% (n=54). Strong TG2 expression was correlated with high Fuhrman nuclear grade (p=.011), high T category (p=.049), metastasis (p=.043) and male sex (p<.001) but not with N category.The survival analysis showed a significant association between strong TG2 expression and worse overall and cancer-specific survival (p=.027 and p=.010, respectively). On multivariate analysis, strong TG2 expression was a marginally significant prognostic indicator for Fuhrman nuclear grade and TNM staging (p=.054). Conclusions: Our study is the first to demonstrate the clinicopathologic significance of TG2 expression in a large number of human CCRCC samples. Strong TG2 expression was associated with high nuclear grade and poor prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (EUS-FNAC) is currently the most commonly used procedure for obtaining cytologic specimens of the pancreas. It is accurate, minimally invasive, safe and cost-effective. However, there is discrepancy between cytological and surgical diagnoses. This study was aimed at evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNAC of the pancreas. METHODS We performed a retrospective review of 191 cases of pancreatic lesions initially diagnosed by EUS-FNAC with subsequent histological diagnosis between 2010 and 2012 in the Department of Pathology, Seoul National University Hospital. Cytologic and surgical diagnoses were categorized into five groups: negative, benign, atypical, malignant, and insufficient for diagnosis. Subsequently, 167 cases with satisfactory yield in both surgical and cytology specimens were statistically analyzed to determine correlations with diagnosis. RESULTS In comparison to surgical diagnoses, cytologic diagnoses were true-positive in 103 cases (61.7%), true-negative in 28 cases (16.8%), false-positive in 9 cases (5.4%), and false-negative in 27 cases (16.1%). The diagnostic accuracy was 78.4%, sensitivity was 79.2%, and specificity was 75.7%. The positive predictive value was 92.0%, and negative predictive value was 50.9%. CONCLUSIONS EUS-FNAC has high accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value. Overcoming the limitations of EUS-FNAC will make it a useful and reliable diagnostic tool for accurate evaluation of pancreatic lesions.

Abstract
WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT Adolescent NAFLD has increased in parallel with obesity. Elevated serum ALT level is a surrogate marker for NALFD. Increased ALT levels are closely related to NAFLD and metabolic syndrome. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS Increased ALT within normal range are associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. All of the five components of metabolic syndrome were associated with high ALT within normal range. By elevation of ALT, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased in obese adolescents and normal-weight adolescents as well. BACKGROUND/AIMS The potential interactions between alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) have not been fully investigated in healthy adolescents. This study investigated the impact of a mild ALT elevation on the risks of MetS in healthy Korean adolescents. METHODS From the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 1998-2009, the data of 5026 adolescents aged 10-18 years (2604 boys and 2422 girls) were analysed. Individuals who had ALT levels equal or more than 40 IU L(-1) were excluded. RESULTS Subjects in the upper ALT tertile had higher mean values of body mass index (BMI), homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance and prevalence of MetS than subjects in the lower tertile. The risk of each five components of MetS was significantly higher than subjects in the lower tertile. Compared with the subjects in the lower ALT tertile, the prevalence of MetS was higher in the upper tertile among obese adolescents (44.6-50.7% vs. 31.2-40.0%) as well as normal-weight adolescents (5.2-7.7% vs. 2.7-3.2%). Subjects in the upper ALT tertile were at a higher risk of MetS than those in the lower tertile (odds ratio [OR] = 1.95 for boys, OR = 2.00 for girls) after controlling for age and BMI. CONCLUSIONS A high serum ALT within normal range increased the risk of all the components of MetS. The prevalence of MetS increased with the elevation of obesity level, and it increased further with the elevation of ALT tertile. Thus, serum ALT levels in addition to BMI might be useful as a marker for early detection of MetS.

Abstract
Unfertilized oocytes age inevitably after ovulation, which limits their fertilizable life span and embryonic development. Rapamycin affects mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) expression and cytoskeleton reorganization during oocyte meiotic maturation. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of rapamycin treatment on aged porcine oocytes and their in vitro development. Rapamycin treatment of aged oocytes for 24 h (68 h in vitro maturation [IVM]; 44 h+10 μM rapamycin/24 h, 47.52±5.68) or control oocytes (44 h IVM; 42.14±4.40) significantly increased the development rate and total cell number compared with untreated aged oocytes (68 h IVM, 22.04±5.68) (p<0.05). Rapamycin treatment of aged IVM oocytes for 24 h also rescued aberrant spindle organization and chromosomal misalignment, blocked the decrease in the level of phosphorylated-p44/42 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and increased the mRNA expression of cytoplasmic maturation factor genes (MOS, BMP15, GDF9, and CCNB1) compared with untreated, 24 h-aged IVM oocytes (p<0.05). Furthermore, rapamycin treatment of aged oocytes decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity and DNA fragmentation (p<0.05), and downregulated the mRNA expression of mTOR compared with control or untreated aged oocytes. By contrast, rapamycin treatment of aged oocytes increased mitochondrial localization (p<0.05) and upregulated the mRNA expression of autophagy (BECN1, ATG7, MAP1LC3B, ATG12, GABARAP, and GABARAPL1), anti-apoptosis (BCL2L1 and BIRC5; p<0.05), and development (NANOG and SOX2; p<0.05) genes, but it did not affect the mRNA expression of pro-apoptosis genes (FAS and CASP3) compared with the control. This study demonstrates that rapamycin treatment can rescue the poor developmental capacity of aged porcine oocytes.

Abstract
The glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) present in the female reproductive tract promote sperm capacitation. When bovine sperm were exposed to 10 μg/ml of one of four GAGs (Chondroitin sulfate, CS; Dermatan sulfate, DS; Hyaluronic acid, HA; Heparin, HP) for 5 h, the total motility (TM), straight-line velocity (VSL), and curvilinear velocity (VCL) were higher in the HP- or HA-treated sperm, relative to control and CS- or DS-treated sperm. HP and HA treatments increased the levels of capacitated and acrosome-reacted sperm over time, compared to other treatment groups (p<0.05). In addition, sperm exposed to HP or HA for 1 h before IVF exhibited significantly improved fertilizing ability, as assessed by 2 pronucleus (PN) formation and cleavage rates at d 2. Exposure to these GAGs also enhanced in vitro embryo development rates and embryo quality, and increased the ICM and total blastocyst cell numbers at d 8 after IVF (p<0.05). A real-time PCR analysis showed that the expression levels of pluripotency (Oct 4), cell growth (Glut 5), and anti-apoptosis (Bax inhibitor) genes were significantly higher in embryos derived from HA- or HP-treated sperm than in control or other treatment groups, while pro-apoptotic gene expression (caspase-3) was significantly lower in all GAG treatment groups (p<0.05). These results demonstrated that exposure of bovine sperm to HP or HA positively correlates with in vitro fertilizing ability, in vitro embryo developmental potential, and embryonic gene expression.

Abstract
Parsley, Petroselinum crispum (Mill.) Nyman, is a minor but important leaf crop in Korea. In June 2010, parsley plants (cv. Paramount) showing typical symptoms of powdery mildew were found with approximately 90% incidence (percentage of plants showing symptoms) in polyethylene-film-covered greenhouses in an organic farm in Icheon County of Korea. Symptoms first appeared as thin white colonies, which subsequently showed abundant growth on the leaves with chlorosis and crinkling. Most diseased plantings were unmarketable and shriveled without being harvested. The damage due to powdery mildew infections on parsley has reappeared in Icheon County and Gangneung City with confirmation of the causal agent made again in 2011 and 2012. Voucher specimens were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Appressoria on the mycelium were multilobed or moderately lobed. Conidiophores were cylindrical, 75 to 125 × 8 to 10 μm, straight in foot-cells, and produced conidia singly, followed by 2 to 3 cells. Conidia were oblong-elliptical to oblong, 32 to 55 × 14 to 20 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.7 to 2.9, lacked fibrosin bodies, and produced germ tubes on the perihilar position, with angular/rectangular wrinkling of the outer walls. First-formed conidia were apically conical, basally subtruncate to rounded, and generally smaller than the secondary conidia. Chasmothecia were not found. These structures are typical of the powdery mildew Pseudoidium anamorph of the genus Erysiphe. The specific measurements and morphological characteristics were consistent with those of E. heraclei DC. (1). To confirm the identity of the causal fungus, the complete ITS region of rDNA from isolate KUS-F25037 was amplified with primers ITS5 and P3 (3) and sequenced directly. The resulting 606-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KF680162). A GenBank BLAST search of this sequence revealed 100% identity with that of E. heraclei on Anethum graveolens from Korea (JN603995) and >99% similarity with those of E. heraclei on Daucus carota from Mexico (GU252368), Pimpinella affinis from Iran (AB104513), Anthriscus cerefolium from Korea (KF111807), and many other parsley family (Apiaceae) plants. Pathogenicity was verified through inoculation by gently pressing diseased leaves onto leaves of five healthy potted parsley plants. Five non-inoculated plants served as negative controls. Inoculated plants developed symptoms after 7 days, whereas the control plants remained symptomless. The fungus present on the inoculated plants was morphologically identical to that originally observed on diseased plants. Parsley powdery mildew caused by E. heraclei has been known in Europe, North America, Brazil, and Japan (2,4). To our knowledge, this is the first report of powdery mildew infections by E. heraclei on parsley in Korea. Since cultivation of parsley was only recently started on a commercial scale in Korea, powdery mildew infections pose a serious threat to safe production of this herb, especially those grown in organic farming where chemical options are limited. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe multidetector CT imaging features of solid pseudopapillary tumours (SPTs) in male patients and to compare these imaging features with those found in female patients. METHODS The institutional review board approved this retrospective study. We included the CT images of 72 patients (M:F = 12:60; mean age, 35.0 years) diagnosed with SPT by histology. CT images were reviewed on the following: location of the tumour, maximal diameter, shape, margin and the fraction of the tumour composition. Statistical differences in CT imaging features were analysed. RESULTS Male patients with SPTs were significantly older than female patients (42.4 years vs 33.4 years, p = 0.0408) and the mean size of the SPTs in male patients was larger (6.3 cm vs 4.6 cm, p = 0.0413) than that of SPTs in female patients. Lobulated shape of the SPTs was most frequent in male patients, whereas oval shape was most frequent in female patients (p = 0.0133). SPTs in male patients tended to have a solid component (p = 0.0434). Progressive enhancement in the solid portion of the tumour was seen in 9 (81.8%) of 11 SPTs in male patients and in 30 (79.0%) of 38 SPTs in female patients on multiphasic CT. CONCLUSION The imaging features of SPTs in male patients usually appeared as a somewhat large-sized solid mass with a lobulated margin and progressive enhancement. These imaging features may help to differentiate SPTs from other pancreatic tumours for their proper management. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE SPTs in male patients appear as somewhat large-sized solid masses with lobulated margins, and this form occurs more frequently in older male patients than in female patients.

Abstract
CD9 and CD82, members of the tetraspanin family, act as metastasis suppressors in many human malignant tumors, but the role of these molecules is not well known in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC). This study was designed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of CD9 and CD82 in 644 cases of CCRCC and to determine the clinicopathologic and prognostic significance of their expression. The percentage of positive tumor cells was evaluated, and the expression was classified into 2 categories: low expression (less than 10% positive cells) or high expression (more than 10% positive cells) for CD9 expression and negative (no positive cells) or positive for CD82 expression. CD9 high expression was found in 303 (47.0%) patients, and CD82 positivity was found in 98 (15.2%) patients. High expression of CD9 was statistically associated with older patients (p=0.003). The cases showing positive immunoreactivity for CD82 exhibited a high stage (p<0.001) and high nuclear grade (p<0.001). The overall, cancer-specific and progression-free survival rates were significantly higher in patients with a CD82-negative profile compared to patients with a CD82-positive profile (p<0.001). Although the biological function of CD82 in CCRCC remains unclear, the CCRCC patients with CD82 positive expression show poor prognosis.

Abstract
Beach vitex, Vitex rotundifolia L. fil., is a perennial that grows in temperate and tropical areas of the Pacific. In areas where it has been introduced outside of its native range, beach vitex has proven to be an invasive species. This plant dominates dune ecosystems leading to a reduction in the prevalence of native species (1). In October 2010, previously unknown leaf spots were observed on the beach vitex growing on sand dunes in Incheon City of Korea. The same symptoms were repeated in 2011 and 2012. In September 2012, the same leaf spots were found on the beach vitex in Samcheok and Gyeongju in Korea. The symptoms usually started as small, dark brown to purplish leaf spots with more or less concentric rings, eventually causing leaf blights or yellowing with 50% or more defoliation by the end of September. Representative samples (n = 6) were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Conidiophores of the fungus observed microscopically on the leaf spots were erect, brown to dark brown, single or occasionally in clusters, 80 to 500 × 5 to 9 μm, and mostly arose on the abaxial surface of symptomatic leaves. Conidia were borne singly or in short chains of 2 to 4, ranging from cylindrical to broadest at the base and tapering apically, straight to slightly curved, pale olivaceous brown, 1 to 12 pseudoseptate, 50 to 250 × 8 to 18 μm, each with a conspicuous thickened hilum. On potato dextrose agar (PDA), single-spore cultures of two isolates were identified as Corynespora cassiicola (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) C.T. Wei on the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics (3). Two monoconidial isolates were preserved at the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession Nos. KACC45712 and KACC46953). Isolate KACC45712 was used for molecular works and pathogenicity test. Genomic DNA was extracted using the DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 520 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KC987359). A BLAST search in GenBank revealed that the sequence showed 100% identity with those of C. cassiicola (e.g., JQ801302). To conduct a pathogenicity test, a conidial suspension (ca. 2 × 104 conidia/ml) was prepared by harvesting conidia from 2-week-old cultures, and the suspension was sprayed onto the leaves of three healthy seedlings. Inoculated plants were kept in humid chambers for 48 h in a glasshouse. After 5 days, typical leaf spot symptoms started to develop on the leaves of all three inoculated plants. C. cassiicola was reisolated from the lesions, confirming Koch's postulates. Control plants treated with sterile water remained symptomless. C. cassiicola is cosmopolitan with a very wide host range (2,4). To our knowledge, C. cassiicola has not been reported on Vitex spp. anywhere in the world. According to field observations in Korea, Corynespora leaf spot was most severe in August and September, especially following a prolonged period of moist weather. Abstract
To preserve Jeju black cattle (JBC; endangered native Korean cattle), a pair of
cattle, namely a post-death cloned JBC bull and cow, were produced by somatic cell
nuclear transfer (SCNT) in a previous study. In the present study, we examined the
in vitro fertilization and reproductive potentials of these
post-death cloned animals. Sperm motility, in vitro fertilization
and developmental capacity were examined in a post-death cloned bull (Heuk Oll Dolee)
and an extinct nuclear donor bull (BK94-13). We assessed reproductive ability in
another post-death cloned cow (Heuk Woo Sunee) using cloned sperm for artificial
insemination (AI). There were no differences in sperm motility or developmental
potential of in vitro fertilized embryos between the post-death
cloned bull and its extinct nuclear donor bull; however, the embryo development ratio
was slightly higher in the cloned sperm group than in the nuclear donor sperm group.
After one attempt at AI, the post-death cloned JBC cow became pregnant, and gestation
proceeded normally until day 287. From this post-death cloned sire and dam, a JBC
male calf (Heuk Woo Dolee) was delivered naturally (weight, 25 kg). The genetic
paternity/maternity of the cloned JBC bull and cow with regard to their offspring was
confirmed using International Society for Animal Genetics standard microsatellite
markers. Presently, Heuk Woo Dolee is 5 months of age and growing normally. In
addition, there were no significant differences in blood chemistry among the
post-death cloned JBC bull, the cow, their offspring and cattle bred by AI. This is
the first report showing that a pair of cattle, namely, a post-death cloned JBC bull
and cow, had normal fertility. Therefore, SCNT can be used effectively to increase
the population of endangered JBC.
