Abstract
Background Postpartum depression (PPD) is a type of depressive episode related to parents after childbirth, which causes a variety of symptoms not only for parents but also affects the development of children. The causal relationship between potential risk factors and PPD remains comprehensively elucidated. Methods Linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) analysis was conducted to screen the heritability of each instrumental variant (IV) and to calculate the genetic correlations between effective causal factors and PPD. To search for the causal effect of multiple potential risk factors on the incidence of PPD, random effects of the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method were applied. Sensitivity analyses, including weighted median, MR-Egger regression, Cochrane's Q test, and MR Pleiotropy Residual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO), were performed to detect potential Mendelian randomization (MR) assumption violations. Multivariable MR (MVMR) was conducted to control potential multicollinearity. Results A total of 40 potential risk factors were investigated in this study. LDSC regression analysis reported a significant genetic correlation of potential traits with PPD. MR analysis showed that higher body mass index (BMI) (Benjamini and Hochberg (BH) corrected p = 0.05), major depression (MD) (BH corrected p = 5.04E-19), and schizophrenia (SCZ) (BH corrected p = 1.64E-05) were associated with the increased risk of PPD, whereas increased age at first birth (BH corrected p = 2.11E-04), older age at first sexual intercourse (BH corrected p = 3.02E-15), increased average total household income before tax (BH corrected p = 4.57E-02), and increased years of schooling (BH corrected p = 1.47E-11) led to a decreased probability of PPD. MVMR analysis suggested that MD (p = 3.25E-08) and older age at first birth (p = 8.18E-04) were still associated with an increased risk of PPD. Conclusion In our MR study, we found multiple risk factors, including MD and younger age at first birth, to be deleterious causal risk factors for PPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epigenetic clocks constructed from DNA methylation patterns have emerged as excellent predictors of aging and aging-related health outcomes. Iron, a crucial element, is meticulously regulated within organisms, a phenomenon referred as iron homeostasis. Previous researches have demonstrated the sophisticated connection between aging and iron homeostasis. However, their causal relationship remains relatively unexplored. RESULTS Through two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) utilizing the random effect inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, each standard deviation (SD) increase in serum iron was associated with increased GrimAge acceleration (GrimAA, BetaIVW = 0.27, P = 8.54E-03 in 2014 datasets; BetaIVW = 0.31, P = 1.25E-02 in 2021 datasets), HannumAge acceleration (HannumAA, BetaIVW = 0.32, P = 4.50E-03 in 2014 datasets; BetaIVW = 0.32, P = 8.03E-03 in 2021 datasets) and Intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (IEAA, BetaIVW = 0.34, P = 5.33E-04 in 2014 datasets; BetaIVW = 0.49, P = 9.94E-04 in 2021 datasets). Similar results were also observed in transferrin saturation. While transferrin manifested a negative association with epigenetic age accelerations (EAAs) sensitivity analyses. Besides, lack of solid evidence to support a causal relationship from EAAs to iron-related biomarkers. CONCLUSIONS The results of present investigation unveiled the causality of iron overload on acceleration of epigenetic clocks. Researches are warranted to illuminate the underlying mechanisms and formulate strategies for potential interventions.

Abstract
Introduction High-grade glioma (HGG) defines a group of brain gliomas characterized by contrast enhancement, high tumor heterogeneity, and poor clinical outcome. Disturbed reduction-oxidation (redox) balance has been frequently associated with the development of tumor cells and their microenvironment (TME). Methods To study the influence of redox balance on HGGs and their microenvironment, we collected mRNA-sequencing and clinical data of HGG patients from TCGA and CGGA databases and our own cohort. Redox-related genes (ROGs) were defined as genes in the MSigDB pathways with keyword "redox" that were differentially expressed between HGGs and normal brain samples. Unsupervised clustering analysis was used to discover ROG expression clusters. Over-representation analysis (ORA), gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and gene set variation analysis (GSVA) were also employed to understand the biological implication of differentially expressed genes between HGG clusters. CIBERSORTx and ESTIMATE were used to profile the immune TME landscapes of tumors, and TIDE was used to evaluated the potential response to immune checkpoint inhibitors. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) Cox regression was used to construct HGG-ROG expression risk signature (GRORS). Results Seventy-five ROGs were found and consensus clustering using the expression profile of ROGs divided the both IDH-mutant (IDHmut) and IDH-wildtype (IDHwt) HGGs into subclusters with different prognosis. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that the differential aggressiveness between redox subclusters in IDHmut HGGs were significantly associated with cell cycle regulation pathways, while IDHwt HGG redox subclusters showed differentially activated immune-related pathways. In silico TME analysis on immune landscapes in the TME showed that the more aggressive redox subclusters in both IDHmut and IDHwt HGGs may harbor a more diverse composition of tumor-infiltrating immune cells, expressed a higher level of immune checkpoints and were more likely to respond to immune checkpoint blockade. Next, we established a GRORS which showed AUCs of 0.787, 0.884, and 0.917 in predicting 1-3-year survival of HGG patients in the held-out validation datasets, and the C-index of a nomogram combining the GRORS and other prognostic information reached 0.835. Conclusion Briefly, our results suggest that the expression pattern of ROGs was closely associated with the prognosis as well as the TME immune profile of HGGs, and may serve as a potential indicator for their response to immunotherapies.

Abstract
Introduction: Glioblastoma is one of the most lethal cancers and leads to more than 200,000 deaths annually. However, despite lots of researchers devoted to exploring novel treatment regime, most of these attempts eventually failed to improve the overall survival of glioblastoma patients in near 20 years. Immunotherapy is an emerging therapy for cancers and have succeeded in many cancers. But most of its application in glioblastoma have been proved with no improvement in overall survival, which may result from the unique immune microenvironment of glioblastoma. Arginine is amino acid and is involved in many physiological processes. Many studies have suggested that arginine and its metabolism can regulate malignancy of multiple cancers and influence the formation of tumor immune microenvironment. However, there is hardly study focusing on the role of arginine metabolism in glioblastoma. Methods: In this research, based on mRNA sequencing data of 560 IDH-wildtype glioblastoma patients from three public cohorts and one our own cohort, we aimed to construct an arginine metabolism-related genes signature (ArMRS) based on four essential arginine metabolism-related genes (ArMGs) that we filtered from all genes with potential relation with arginine metabolism. Subsequently, the glioblastoma patients were classified into ArMRS high-risk and low-risk groups according to calculated optimal cut-off values of ArMRS in these four cohorts. Results: Further validation demonstrated that the ArMRS was an independent prognostic factor and displayed fine efficacy in prediction of glioblastoma patients' prognosis. Moreover, analyses of tumor immune microenvironment revealed that higher ArMRS was correlated with more immune infiltration and relatively "hot" immunological phenotype. We also demonstrated that ArMRS was positively correlated with the expression of multiple immunotherapy targets, including PD1 and B7-H3. Additionally, the glioblastomas in the ArMRS high-risk group would present with more cytotoxic T cells (CTLs) infiltration and better predicted response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Discussion: In conclusion, our study constructed a novel score system based on arginine metabolism, ArMRS, which presented with good efficacy in prognosis prediction and strong potential to predict unique immunological features, resistance to immunotherapy, and guide the application of immunotherapy in IDH-wild type glioblastoma.

Abstract
Background Glioma is the most common primary brain tumor in adults and accounts for more than 70% of brain malignancies. Lipids are crucial components of biological membranes and other structures in cells. Accumulating evidence has supported the role of lipid metabolism in reshaping the tumor immune microenvironment (TME). However, the relationship between the immune TME of glioma and lipid metabolism remain poorly described. Materials and methods The RNA-seq data and clinicopathological information of primary glioma patients were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA). An independent RNA-seq dataset from the West China Hospital (WCH) also included in the study. Univariate Cox regression and LASSO Cox regression model was first to determine the prognostic gene signature from lipid metabolism-related genes (LMRGs). Then a risk score named LMRGs-related risk score (LRS) was established and patients were stratified into high and low risk groups according to LRS. The prognostic value of the LRS was further demonstrated by construction of a glioma risk nomogram. ESTIMATE and CIBERSORTx were used to depicted the TME immune landscape. Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) was utilized to predict the therapeutic response of immune checkpoint blockades (ICB) among glioma patients. Results A total of 144 LMRGs were differentially expressed between gliomas and brain tissue. Finally, 11 prognostic LMRGs were included in the construction of LRS. The LRS was demonstrated to be an independent prognostic predictor for glioma patients, and a nomogram consisting of the LRS, IDH mutational status, WHO grade, and radiotherapy showed a C-index of 0.852. LRS values were significantly associated with stromal score, immune score, and ESTIMATE score. CIBERSORTx indicated remarkable differences in the abundance of TME immune cells between patients with high and low LRS risk levels. Based on the results of TIDE algorithm, we speculated that the high-risk group had a greater chance of benefiting from immunotherapy. Conclusion The risk model based upon LMRGs could effectively predict prognosis in patients with glioma. Risk score also divided glioma patients into different groups with distinct TME immune characteristics. Immunotherapy is potentially beneficial to glioma patients with certain lipid metabolism profiles.

Abstract
Glioma is the most common malignant tumor in the central nervous system. The impact of metabolism on cancer development and the immune microenvironment landscape has recently gained broad attention. Purines are involved in multiple metabolic pathways. It has been proved that purine metabolism could regulate malignant biological behaviors and response to immune checkpoint inhibitors in multiple cancers. However, the relationship of purine metabolism with clinicopathological features and the immune landscape of glioma remains unclear. In this study, we explored the relationships between the expression of purine metabolism-related genes (PuMGs) and tumor features, including prognosis and microenvironment of glioma, based on analyses of 1,523 tumors from 4 public databases and our cohort. Consensus clustering based on 136 PuMGs classified the glioma patients into two clusters with significantly distinguished prognosis and immune microenvironment landscapes. Increased immune infiltration was associated with more aggressive gliomas. The prognostic Purine Metabolism-Related Genes Risk Signature (PuMRS), based on 11 critical PuMGs, stratified the patients into PuMRS low- and high-risk groups in the training set and was validated by validation sets from multiple cohorts. The high-risk group presented with significantly shorter overall survival, and further survival analysis demonstrated that the PuMRS was an independent prognostic factor in glioma. The nomogram combining PuMRS and other clinicopathological factors showed satisfactory accuracy in predicting glioma patients’ prognosis. Furthermore, analyses of the tumor immune microenvironment suggested that higher PuMRS was correlated with increased immune cell infiltration and gene expression signatures of “hotˮ tumors. Gliomas in the PuMRS high-risk group presented a higher expression level of multiple immune checkpoints, including PD-1 and PD-L1, and a better-predicted therapy response to immune checkpoint inhibitors. In conclusion, our study elucidated the relationship between the expression level of PuMGs and the aggressiveness of gliomas. Our study also endorsed the application of PuMRS to construct a new robust model for the prognosis evaluation of glioma patients. The correlations between the profiles of PuMGs expression and tumor immune microenvironment potentially provided guidance for immunotherapy in glioma.

Abstract
Glioma is the most prevalent malignancy in the central nervous system. The impact of ion-induced cell death on malignant tumors’ development and immune microenvironment has attracted broad attention in recent years. Cuproptosis is a novel copper-dependent mechanism that could potentially regulate tumor cell death by targeting mitochondria respiration. However, the role of cuproptosis in gliomas remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the relationships between the expression of cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) and tumor characteristics, including prognosis and microenvironment of glioma, by analyzing multiple public databases and our cohort. Consensus clustering based on the expression of twelve CRGs stratified the glioma patients into three subgroups with significantly different prognosis and immune microenvironment landscapes. Reduced immune infiltration was associated with the less aggressive CRG cluster. A prognostic CRGs risk signature (CRGRS), based on eight critical CRGs, classified the patients into low- and high-risk groups in the training set and was endorsed by validation sets from multiple cohorts. The high-risk group manifested a shorter overall survival, and further survival analysis demonstrated that the CRGRS was an independent prognostic factor. The nomogram combining CRGRS and other clinicopathological factors exhibited good accuracy in predicting the prognosis of glioma patients. Moreover, analyses of tumor immune microenvironment indicated that higher CRGRS was correlated with increased immune cell infiltration but diminished immune function. Gliomas in the high-risk group exhibited higher expression of multiple immune checkpoints, including PD-1 and PD-L1, and a better predicted therapy response to immune checkpoint inhibitors. In conclusion, our study elucidated the connections between CRGs expression and the aggressiveness of gliomas, and the application of CRGRS derived a new robust model for prognosis evaluation of glioma patients. The correlations between the profiles of CRGs expression and immune tumor microenvironment illuminated prospects and potential indications of immunotherapy for glioma.

Abstract
Glioma is one of the most malignant intracerebral tumors, whose treatment means was limited, and prognosis was unsatisfactory. Lactate metabolism patterns have been shown to be highly heterogenous among different tumors and produce diverse impact on the tumor microenvironment. To understand the characteristics and implications of lactate metabolism gene expression, we developed a lactate metabolism-related gene expression signature of gliomas based on RNA-sequencing data of a total of 965 patient samples from TCGA, CGGA, and our own glioma cohort. Sixty-three lactate metabolism-related genes (LMGs) were differentially expressed between glioma and normal brain tissue, and consensus clustering analysis identified two clusters distinct LMG expression patterns. The consensus clusters differed in prognosis, molecular characteristics and estimated immune microenvironment landscape involving immune checkpoint proteins, T cell dysfunction and exclusion, as well as tumor purity. Univariate Cox regression and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) Cox hazard regression was applied in determining of prognosis-related lactate metabolism genes (PRLMGs), on which prognostic lactate metabolism risk score (PLMRS) was constructed. The high PLMRS group was associated with significantly poorer patient outcome. A nomogram containing PLMRS and other independent prognostic variables was established with remarkable predictive performance on patient survival. Exploration on the somatic mutations and copy number variations of the high- and low-PLMRS groups demonstrated their distinct genetic background. Together, our results indicated that the expression signature of LMG was associated with the prognosis of glioma patients and influenced the activity of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment, which may serve as a potential biomarker for predicting response of gliomas to immunotherapy.

Abstract
Background Glioblastoma (GBM) accounts for approximately 80% of malignant gliomas and is characterized by considerable cellularity and mitotic activity, vascular proliferation, and necrosis. Naples prognostic score (NPS), based on inflammatory markers and nutritional status, has a prognostic ability in various cancers. In the current study, we aim to explore the prognostic value of operative NPS in GBM patients and compare the prognostic ability between NPS and controlling nutritional status (CONUT). Materials and methods The retrospective analysis was carried out on consecutive newly diagnosed GBM patients who had underwent tumor resection at West China Hospital from February 2016 to March 2019. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS software and R software. Results A total of 276 newly diagnosed GBM patients were enrolled in the current study. Overall survival (OS) (p < 0.001) and tumor location (p = 0.007) were significantly related to NPS. Serum albumin concentrate, cholesterol concentrate, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, lymphocyte ratio, and CONUT score were all significantly associated with NPS (p < 0.001). The Kaplan–Meier curve indicated that NPS (log-rank test, p < 0.001) and CONUT score (log-rank test, p = 0.023) were significantly associated with OS. Multivariate Cox regression revealed that both NPS and CONUT score served as independent prognostic indicators. The prognostic model with NPS had the strongest prognostic capability and best model-fitting. Conclusion In the current study, NPS is found as an independent prognostic indicator for patients with newly diagnosed GBM, and the prognostic ability of NPS is superior to CONUT score.

Abstract
Background Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most frequent and lethal brain tumor, which possesses highly malignant characteristics and predominates in elder patients. Systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) is a novel prognostic marker from peripheral blood, which is defined as neutrophil count × monocyte count/lymphocyte count. In the current research, we aim to explore the relationship between SIRI and newly diagnosed GBM underwent gross total resection (GTR). Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on consecutive newly diagnosed GBM patients underwent operation at West China Hospital from March 2015 to January 2019. X-tile software was used to determine the optimal cut-off values of SIRI, and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR). All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software and R software. Propensity score matching (PSM) was conducted to adjust for imbalance of all potential confounding covariates. Results The current research included a total of 291 consecutive newly diagnosed GBM patients underwent gross total resection. Among them, 186 were male patients and 105 were female patients. In original cohort, only gender was evidently related to SIRI level. SIRI and NLR were independent prognostic indicators both in original cohort and PSM cohort. Prognostic models based on the independent prognostic factors were established, and prognostic capacity of Model SIRI was superior to Model NLR. Conclusion In the current research, SIRI was determined to be an independent prognostic indicator for GBM. And the prognostic predictive ability of SIRI was stronger than NLR. Abstract
Facial paralysis is negatively associated with functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial consequences. The masseteric-to-facial nerve transfer (MFNT) has many advantages in facial reanimation. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of our MFNT technique and define the potential factors predictive of outcome. The authors conducted a retrospective review of 20 consecutive patients who underwent MFNT using the temporofacial trunk of facial nerve. Videotapes and images were documented and evaluated according to Facial Nerve Grading Scale 2.0 (FNGS2.0) and Sunnybrook Facial Grading System (FGS). The quality-of-life was obtained using the Facial Clinimetric Evaluation (FaCE) Scale. Moreover, Facial Asymmetry Index (FAI), quantitative measurement of the width of palpebral fissure, deviation of the philtrum, and angles or excursions of the oral commissure were applied to explore the effect of the transfer metrically. Multivariable logistic regression models and Cox regression were prepared to predict the effect of MFNT by preoperative clinical features. The patients showed favorable outcomes graded by FNGS2.0, and experienced significantly improved scores in static and dynamic symmetry with slightly elevated scores in synkinesis evaluated by the Sunnybrook FGS. The score of FaCE Scale increased in all domains after reanimation. The quantitative indices indicated the symmetry restoration of the middle and lower face after MFNT. Regression analysis revealed that younger patients with severe facial paralysis are preferable to receive MFNT early for faster and better recovery, especially for traumatic causes. The findings demonstrate that MFNT is an effective technique for facial reanimation, and case screening based on clinical characteristics could be useful for surgical recommendation.

Abstract
High-throughput 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA sequencing were performed to study the changes of soil microbial diversity and community structure under different heavy metal pollution levels in Chengxian lead-zinc mining area, Gansu Province. In this study, we characterized the main physicochemical properties, multiple heavy metal pollution, and microbial community structure of the soil in the tailings. The results show that the soil near the tailings pond was alkaline, barren and the heavy metals were seriously polluted. The microbial diversity and richness of S1 and S2 sites were significantly lower than that of CK2 site (P < 0·05), indicating that the heavy metal pollution could change the physicochemical properties and microbial community structure in soil. Among 97 identified core operating taxa of fungal communities, Ascomycota, Teguta and Basidiomycota were dominant at the phylum level, while among 1523 identified core operating taxa of bacterial communities, Actinomycota was dominant at the phylum level. In addition, the redundancy analysis and Spearman correlation analysis showed that the physicochemical properties and the heavy metal concentration had significant effects on the composition and distribution of soil microbial community. The basic characteristics of soil physicochemical properties, multiple heavy metal pollution and microbial community structure in the tailings were revealed, hoping to provide a basis for ecological rehabilitation of tailings by revealing the variance rule of microbial community diversity in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cranioplasty is widely applied on patients who has undergone decompress craniectomy (DC) due to intractable increased intracranial pressure and the cranioplasty materials have been on the bleeding edge of biomolecular and material science. This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) will be conducted to comprehensively evaluate the safety and efficacy of different cranial implants for patients with cranial defects due to various reasons. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This protocol has been reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols. The following electronic databases will be searched from the date of database establishment to September 1, 2020: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP, and Wanfang. Randomized controlled trials and non-randomized prospective studies focus on cranial implants will be included. Quality assessment will be conducted using Cochrane Collaboration's tool or risk of bias in nonrandomized studies of interventions based on their study designs. The primary outcome will be postoperative early mortality and implant failure while various complications for secondary outcomes. Pairwise and network meta-analysis will be conducted using STATA V.14 (StataCorp, College Station, Texas, USA). Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses will be conducted to assess the robustness of the results. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This systematic review does not require an ethics approval or the need to obtain informed consent. The results will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Abstract
Objective: To explore the prognostic value of preoperative albumin to alkaline phosphatase ratio (AAPR) in patients with newly-diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM) and its association with clinical characteristics. Patients and methods: A retrospective analysis was carried out on patients with newly diagnosed GBM who had undergone operation at the Department of Neurosurgery at West China Hospital between June 1st 2016 to December 31st 2018. X-tile software was applied to determine the optimal cut-off values for AAPR, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and albumin. Cox regression analyses were applied to evaluate the prognostic value of AAPR in GBM. PSM analysis was conducted to verify the results. Results: A total of 197 and 154 GBM patients were included in original cohort and PSM cohort respectively. The optimal cut-off value for AAPR, NLR, and albumin were 0.56, 4.55 and 42.2 g/L respectively. High AAPR was only significantly related to longer overall survival (OS) (p=0.010) in original cohort. In PSM cohort, no clinical variable was evidently related to the level of AAPR. AAPR was determined to be an independent prognostic indicator in both original cohort (HR=0.599, 95%CI 0.437-0.822, p=0.001) and PSM cohort (HR=0.649, 95%CI 0.459-0.918, p=0.015). Prognostic models including AAPR had better prognostic accuracy than that including albumin. Conclusion: Preoperative AAPR was determined to be an independent risk factor of prognosis in newly-diagnosed GBM patients, and its prognostic ability was stronger than albumin. And PSM analysis also validated the results.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION The relationship between urinary excretion rate of glucose (UEGL) and uric acid (UA) metabolism in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains unclear to date. This study aimed to investigate the relationships of UEGL with serum UA (SUA), urinary excretion rate of uric acid (UEUA), and renal clearance of uric acid (CLUA) in adults with T2D. We hypothesised that high UEGL increases UA excretion, which in turn leads to lower SUA. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of 635 inpatients with T2D recruited between 2018 and 2019. The relationships of UEGL with UEUA, CLUA, and hyperuricaemia were assessed using analysis of covariance and multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS Patients in the higher quartile of UEGL tended to have lower SUA levels than those in the lower quartile. In contrast, patients in the higher quartile of UEGL tended to have higher CLUA (p for trend < 0.0001), and a similar trend was observed for UEUA. In adjusted multivariable linear regression model, UEGL was negatively correlated with SUA (β = - 0.023, 95% CI - 0.034 to - 0.013, p < 0.0001). However, positive correlations of UEGL with UEUA (β = 0.046, 95% CI 0.018-0.074, p = 0.001) and CLUA (β = 0.063, 95% CI 0.042-0.085, p < 0.0001) were found. Furthermore, consistent significant inverse associations were observed between quartiles of UEGL and hyperuricaemia in the adjusted multivariate logistic regression model. CONCLUSIONS A high UEGL level was positively correlated with UEUA and CLUA. Moreover, it was inversely associated with SUA level, and a consistently increased UEGL level reduced the risk of hyperuricaemia in patients with T2D.

Abstract
This study assesses the effect of extent of resection (EOR) on the longer-term survival and early mortality of elderly patients (≥ 75 years old) with glioblastoma. We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and data from our center to evaluate the effect of EOR on the long-term survival and early mortality of patients with glioblastoma. We included 50 elderly patients (≥ 75 years old) with glioblastoma visiting our hospital. The median overall survival of the patients who underwent a gross total resection, a subtotal resection, and a partial resection were 278, 200, and 83 days, respectively. The multivariate analysis showed that gross total resection (HR: 0.100; 95% CI: 0.015-0.671, p < 0.001) and subtotal reresection (HR: 0.134, 95% CI: 0.022-0.831, p < 0.001) were independent predictors of favorable prognosis when compared with partial resection. The data extracted from the SEER database also indicated that EOR was an independent predictor of OS, CCS, and early mortality. The stratification analysis revealed that gross total resection was the best protective factor of OS, early mortality, and CCS. Radical resection may improve the OS and CCS of glioblastoma patients aged ≥ 75 years and decrease early mortality.

Abstract
Abstract Objective To observe the skin ultrastructure change of electric shock death rats and to test the expression changes of hypoxia-inducible factor-2α (HIF-2α) and heart type-fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) of myocardial cells, in order to provide basis for forensic identification of electric shock death. Methods The electric shock model of rats was established. The 72 rats were randomly divided into control group, electric shock death group and postmortem electric shock group. Each group was divided into three subgroups, immediate (0 min), 30 min and 60 min after death. The skin changes of rats were observed by HE staining, the changes of skin ultrastructure were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the expression of HIF-2α and H-FABP in rats myocardium was tested by immunohistochemical staining. Results The skin in the electric shock death group and postmortem electric shock group had no significant difference through the naked eye or by HE staining. Under the scanning electron microscope, a large number of cellular debris, cells with unclear boundaries, withered cracks, circular or elliptical holes scattered on the cell surface and irregular edges were observed. A large number of spherical foreign body particles were observed. Compared with the control group, the expression of HIF-2α in all electric shock death subgroups increased, reaching the peak immediately after death. In the postmortem electric shock group, HIF-2α expression only increased immediately after death, but was lower than that of electric shock death group (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the expression of H-FABP in all subgroups of electric shock death group and postmortem electric shock group significantly decreased. The expression of H-FABP in all subgroups of electric shock death group was lower than that of the postmortem electric shock group (P<0.05). Conclusion Electric shock can increase HIF-2α expression and decrease H-FABP expression in the myocardium, which may be of forensic significance for the determination of electric shock death and identification of antemortem and postmortem electric shock.

Abstract
Epithelioid glioblastoma is a new variant of glioblastoma that has been recently recognized in the 2016 WHO classification of brain tumors. Given the rarity of epithelioid glioblastoma, the clinical characteristics, pathological features, radiological findings, and treatment outcomes are still not well characterized. Therefore, we identified eighty-four epithelioid glioblastoma cases to investigate these characteristics and identify the possible prognostic factors of survival. There were 55 male and 29 female patients with a mean age of 33.6 years. Headache (77.3%) was the most common clinical symptom, and other common symptoms included nausea or vomiting (34%), dizziness (20.5%), seizures (13.6%), and limb weakness (13.6%). Most lesions (88.1%) were located in cerebral lobes, especially in the frontal lobe and temporal lobe. One hundred percent of the patients were IDH1 wild-type (75/75) and INI-1 positive (58/58), and 57.3% (47/82) of patients harbored BRAFV600E mutation. The median overall survival (OS) of all patients was 10.5 months. Patients who received chemotherapy (p = 0.006) or radiotherapy (p = 0.022) had a longer survival than patients who did not. In addition, the K-M curve showed that the BRAFV600E mutation status was not associated with survival (p = 0.724). These findings may assist clinicians with better understanding and management of epithelioid glioblastoma.

Abstract
Background Malignant glioma exerts a metabolic shift from oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOs) to aerobic glycolysis, with suppressed mitochondrial functions. This phenomenon offers a proliferation advantage to tumor cells and decrease mitochondria-dependent cell death. However, the underlying mechanism for mitochondrial dysfunction in glioma is not well elucidated. MTCH2 is a mitochondrial outer membrane protein that regulates mitochondrial metabolism and related cell death. This study aims to clarify the role of MTCH2 in glioma. Methods Bioinformatic analysis from TCGA and CGGA databases were used to investigate the association of MTCH2 with glioma malignancy and clinical significance. The expression of MTCH2 was verified from clinical specimens using real-time PCR and western blots in our cohorts. siRNA-mediated MTCH2 knockdown were used to assess the biological functions of MTCH2 in glioma progression, including cell invasion and temozolomide-induced cell death. Biochemical investigations of mitochondrial and cellular signaling alternations were performed to detect the mechanism by which MTCH2 regulates glioma malignancy. Results Bioinformatic data from public database and our cohort showed that MTCH2 expression was closely associated with glioma malignancy and poor patient survival. Silencing of MTCH2 expression impaired cell migration/invasion and enhanced temozolomide sensitivity of human glioma cells. Mechanistically, MTCH2 knockdown may increase mitochondrial OXPHOs and thus oxidative damage, decreased migration/invasion pathways, and repressed pro-survival AKT signaling. Conclusion Our work establishes the relationship between MTCH2 expression and glioma malignancy, and provides a potential target for future interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study evaluated the early death and factors associated with early mortality in patients with glioma. METHODS The data used for analysis in the present study was extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data set. RESULTS A total of 58,700 patients with glioma were enrolled in the present study. The proportion of patient death within 1 month and 3 months after the diagnosis was 9.24% and 19.15% for all patients, respectively. The factors significantly associated with death within 1 month after tumor resection on multivariate analysis included age at diagnosis, year of diagnosis, tumor location, histological features, tumor size, and the absence of gross total resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. We also observed similar findings in the evaluation of the factors associated with 3-month mortality. CONCLUSION The early deaths rates, including 1 and 3 months after tumor resection in patients with glioma, have decreased slightly during the previous 40 years. The risk factors for early mortality included advanced age, male sex, tumor located in the lateral ventricle, cerebellum, or brainstem, receipt of biopsy only, no chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and specific histopathological types.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To observe the changes of the formation time of venous thrombus in rats, and to provide new ideas and methods for the estimation on thrombus formation time of the forensic cases died from thrombosis. METHODS Totally 80 rats were randomly divided into 10 groups (0 h, 3 h, 6 h, 12 h, 1 d, 3 d, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 4 weeks after operation). A vein thrombosis model was established by the "narrow" method. The processes of thrombosis, organization, recanalization and the features of change on hemosiderin and calcium salt were observed by HE stain, Perls stain and Von Kossa stain. The expression changes of CD61, α-SMA and CD34 were observed by immunohistochemical staining technique. RESULTS Platelets adhered to the exposed blood vessel intima 3 h after operation, and platelet trabeculae were formed by the repeated accumulation of platelets 1 d after operation. The thrombus organization formed through the fibroblasts from vessel wall that grew into the interior of the thrombus 3 d after operation. Endothelial cells covered the surface of thrombus and then the new blood vessels were reformed, and the vessels were reconstructed. The expression of CD61 upregulated at the stages of the thrombus formation (3 h) and thrombus reformation (4 weeks), and reached the peak 1 d after thrombus formation. The release of hemosiderin and the initial expression of α-SMA were detected 3 d later. Calcium deposit and expression of CD34 were observed 1 week later. CONCLUSIONS The hemosiderin, calcium salt, CD61, α-SMA and CD34 show time-dependent changing characteristics, which is expected to provide a reference for the estimation on thrombus formation time of the forensic cases died from thrombosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While major progress has been made in diagnosis and treatment of gliomas based on molecules, molecular features of thalamic glioma have rarely been reported till now. OBJECTIVE IDH1 mutation is important for prognosis of gliomas and represents a distinctive category of glioma. We intended to survey specific molecular abnormalities in high-grade thalamic gliomas (WHO III-IV). METHODS We collected data of 50 and 93 newly diagnosed high-grade thalamic and superficial glioma patients respectively and conducted a comparative analysis of molecular characteristics between them. We analyzed expressions of molecules as follow: IDH1/2, P53, Ki-67, ATRX, PTEN, MMP9 and MGMT by Immunohistochemistry (IHC). Direct gene sequencing was performed to test the IDH1(R 132H) mutation. RESULTS We found a significant difference of IDH1 mutation between those high-grade gliomas, with 92% (46/50) of the thalamic tumors and 71% (66/93) of the superficial gliomas showing IDH1 wild-type (p= 0.004). It also showed that IDH1 mutation in superficial glioblastomas 18.6% (13/70) occurred more than thalamic glioblastomas 2.6% (1/39) (p= 0.017). As to high-grade superficial gliomas, there were 26 patients with IDH1 mutation, which contained 7, 13, and 6 high, moderate and low Ki-67 expression gliomas, respectively. The IDH1 wild-type group (62 patients), was composed of 29, 30, and 3 high, moderate and low Ki-67 expression gliomas, respectively. There was a significant distinction between the IDH1 mutation and Ki-67 expressions (p= 0.024). We also noted that the occurrence of low Ki-67 expressions 23.1% (6/26) in IDH1 mutation group was outnumbered than IDH1 wild-type group 4.8% (3/62) (p= 0.018). In addition, we found PTEN negative correlated with MMP9 negative in thalamic high-grade gliomas, whereas no such difference was found in superficial gliomas (p= 0.016). CONCLUSION The rare occurrence of IDH1 mutant high-grade thalamic gliomas strongly suggested that the high-grade thalamic glioma is another distinct tumor entity as compared to the high-grade superficial gliomas.

Abstract
Responses of net photosynthetic rates to intercellular CO(2) concentration (P (n)/C (i) curves) and photochemical characteristics were investigated in flag leaves of newly developed superhigh-yield hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) LiangYouPeiJiu (LYPJ) and its maternal PeiAi64S (PA64S) and paternal WuMang9311 (WM9311) lines grown in the field during the reproductive stage. The results showed that photosynthetic functions, such as the electron transport activities of photosystems and photophosphorylation, assessed in vivo from P (n)/C (i) curves under field conditions declined more or earlier than those obtained in vitro. The degradation of polypeptides of thylakoid membranes was slower than those for P (Ca=360) (light-saturated net photosynthetic rate measured at 360 mumol mol(-1)) and CE (carboxylation efficiency, obtained from the initial slope of the P (n)/C (i) curve). The initial inhibition of the PSII electron transport and oxygen-evolving activity induced by senescence occurred before the degradation of the oxygen-evolving complex. In comparison, LYPJ had intermediate photosynthetic functions in the early stage of leaf development, but greater photochemical activities in the mid and late stages. WM9311 showed a similar pattern of changes but lower values, and PA64S had higher values in the early stage but showed a faster rate of senescence than LYPJ. These findings implied that the hybrid LYPJ demonstrated intermediate photosynthetic activities between its parents in the early stage of leaf development, whereas it had higher photosynthetic activities than its parents in the mid and late stages, which may be responsible for its high yield.

Abstract
A common mutation, C677T, in the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) reduces the activity of MTHFR and increases total homocysteine levels in plasma. Increased homocysteine levels are reportedly associated with high serum uric acid levels. The relationship between the MTHFR mutation and uric acid metabolism remains unclear, however. To investigate whether the C677T MTHFR mutation is a risk factor for hyperuricemia, we performed MTHFR genotyping and clinical laboratory determinations, including serum uric acid, in 271 elderly Japanese men (age range, 40-79 years; mean, 52.6 years). The mean uric acid levels for the C/C, C/T, and T/T genotypes were 5.67, 6.00, and 6.39 mg/dl, respectively (P = 0.012). The T/T genotype was more frequent in subjects with high uric acid levels than in those with low uric acid levels (P = 0.038). These findings suggest that the C677T MTHFR mutation contributed to higher uric acid levels in subjects enrolled in this study. In conclusion, the mutation of the MTHFR gene may be a risk factor for hyperuricemia in elderly men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the polymorphism at D1S8 locus and to provide basic information for the construction of DNA fingerprint database and the application in forensic medicine. METHODS Minisatellite variant repeat-polymerase chain reaction (MVR-PCR) and polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis followed by silver staining were used to detect the variant repeat sequences at D1S8 locus of 240 unrelated individuals in Hebei Han population, and digital codes were obtained. RESULTS Each individual obtained about 30 digital codes, in which none of two unrelated individuals had the same code. The probability of identity of 30 digital codes was 3.55x10(-11). The percentages of three repeat units, a-type, t-type and o-type were 54.77%, 42.54% and 2.69% respectively. The heterozygosity (H) was 0.9837. The excluding probability of paternity(EPP) and polymorphism information content(PIC) were 0.9669 and 0.9833 respectively. CONCLUSION Because of its high polymorphic nature, D1S8 locus is a valuable marker for forensic identification and paternity testing.

Abstract
The missense mutation, C677T (Ala--->Val), in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene, is related to hyperhomocysteinemia and is regarded as a risk factor for coronary artery disease and neural tube defects. The prevalence of this mutation was reported to differ among various ethnic groups, but there are few reports concerning Asian populations. We have investigated the frequencies of C677T mutation in 124 Korean infants (residents in Seoul city, Korea) and 115 Japanese adults (residents in Kobe city, Japan), and compared them with the reported data from other ethnic groups. The frequencies of the three genotypes in Koreans were as follows: C/C (wild homozygosity) 0.27, C/T (heterozygosity) 0.66, T/T (mutated homozygosity) 0.07, while those in Japanese were as follows: C/C 0.44, C/T 0.40, T/T 0.16. There was a marked difference in the genotype frequencies between the two populations (chi-square = 16.67, P = 0.0002), even though they are closely related in genetic background. The high C/T genotype frequency led to significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (chi-square = 17.35, P = 0.00003). Deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium has not been found in any other ethnic groups. The high frequency of C/T genotype may offer Koreans a selective advantage.

Abstract
Nucleus taenia (Tn) in birds is a discrete component of a loosely defined archistriatal structure, the posterior and medial archistriatum. By virtue of its hypothalamic projections, the posterior and medial archistriatum is thought to be an avian homolog of the amygdala in mammals. A recent fluorogold (FG) study of avian hippocampus revealed backfilled labels in nucleus Tn, suggesting that this nucleus may indeed be the homolog of mammalian amygdala. In the present study, we sought to characterize nucleus Tn in terms of its connections and function. We used the anterograde tracers Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHAL) and biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) to map the efferent projections of Tn. The retrograde tracers FG and BDA were used to corroborate the efferent projections and to explore the pattern of afferent inputs to Tn. Finally, we explored the role of Tn in social behavior by observing behavioral changes associated with electrolytic lesions to Tn. The subjects of our studies were ring doves and European starlings, representing two avian orders. When a deposit of anterograde tracer was centered in Tn, it revealed projections to the hypothalamus, following the course of the hypothalamic-occipitomesencephalic tract previously reported in pigeons. The projections were bilateral in ring doves and ipsilateral in starlings. The BDA injections in the archistratum intermedium, lateral to Tn, did not yield the same projectional pattern. Together with corroborative data from FG retrograde experiments, these findings suggest that Tn is probably the primary origin of the hypothalamic projection. A robust projection to the hyperstriatal region was present along the lateral wall of the lateral ventricle, continuing into the anteroventral pole of the ventricle. Highly arborized terminal fields were found all along this pathway, notably in the medial parolfactory lobe (corresponding to the basal ganglia) and along the dorsal roof of the rostral hyperstriatum ventrale just ventral to the laminal frontalis superior (in ring doves) and the lamina frontalis suprema (in starlings). Projections to the hippocampal complex were mostly restricted to the parahippocampus. The FG data suggest the presence of afferent projections from the ovoidais shell and nucleus subrotundus region, the hippocampal complex in both species, and high vocal nucleus in starlings. Behavioral effects of Tn lesions suggest that nucleus taenia is involved in the control of social behavior through its influence on the affective state. Nucleus taenia thus exhibits many of the structural and functional features of the amygdaloid complex in mammals - that is, subcortical sensory inputs, hippocampal complex connections, and a functional role in adaptive patterns of social behavior.

Abstract
Studies in songbirds suggest that neurogenesis during the first few years of life is related to song learning. In this study, we examined whether postnatal neurogenesis occurs in a nonsongbird, the ring dove (Streptoplia risoria), and whether it persists to old age. Twenty-four hours after a single intramuscular injection of [3H]thymidine, labeled cells were present in the brains, particularly in the lateral wall of the lateral ventricle of juvenile (3-month and 8-month) and adult (1-year to 8-year) doves. Two months after multiple [3H]thymidine injections, there were fewer labeled cells in the ventricular zone (VZ), but many labeled cells with neuronal morphology in the parenchyma of the forebrain; labeled cells were confirmed as neurons by using neuron-specific markers, microtubule-associated protein-2 (MAP-2) and anti-neuronal nucleus (NeuN). In general, new neurons were distributed in the forebrain without clustering in any particular nucleus. During the first year of life, however, neostriatum caudale and hyperstriatum, the regions known to be essential for proper integration of sensory cues and reproductive behavior, contained more new neurons than any other brain regions. These neuronal additions showed an age-related decline; the first reduction coincided with the dove's attainment of adult physical size (about 3 months old) and the second occurred when the dove would normally attain reproductive fitness (about 1 year old). A low level of forebrain neurogenesis persisted up to 8 years of age (the oldest animals studied). These observations suggest that neurogenesis in adulthood is widespread among birds but that the biological significance of adult neurogenesis in the ring dove remains to be determined.

Abstract
In this study, we have investigated the neuroanatomical pathways that may underlie the influence of a female bird's vocal behavior upon her own reproductive endocrine response. We traced the ascending efferent projections of the midbrain vocal control nucleus, the intercollicularis (ICo), using an anterograde tracer, PHAL, delivered by iontophoretic application. We found labelled terminal fields in the anterior regions of the hypothalamus that contained luteinizing hormone releasing hormone- (LHRH) immunoreactive neurons. We injected into the LHRH-rich anterior medial hypothalamus (AM) the retrograde tracer, fluoro-gold, to verify the results of PHAL anterograde tracing and examine whether retrogradely labelled neurons in the ICo can be stained with met-enkephalin antiserum by the immunohistochemical method. Of the retrogradely labelled neurons in the medial division of ICo (mICo), between 5% and 15% were found to be met-enkephalin-immunoreactive positive perikarya. Our data suggest that axonal projections into the anterior medial hypothalamus may arise in part from enkephalin-immunoreactive neurons in the medial ICo. The mICo neurons distributed along the medial border of the midbrain auditory nucleus give rise to projections into the posterior medial hypothalamus (PMH) via synapses within the shell region of thalamic auditory nucleus, ovoidalis (Ov). We conclude that in the ring dove, the medial division of the vocal control nucleus, by virtue of its connection with the auditory thalamus and neurosecretory hypothalamus, is in a position to exert influence on endocrine response partly through enkephalinergic systems. Implications of similar connections in other species are discussed.

Abstract
Following bilateral lesions to the posterior medial hypothalamus (homologue of the mammalian ventromedial nucleus), adult male ring doves regain full courtship behavior and the ability to stimulate female egg-laying when housed continuously with females. Males with PMH lesions housed singly and only tested periodically with females continue to show deficits in courtship. These findings suggest that the social environment present in adulthood itself can directly influence recovery from brain lesions. They also demonstrate the importance of PMH in the mediation of male ring dove courtship behavior.

Abstract
Levonorgestrel (LN), 3-Keto-desogestrel (KDG), norethisterone (NET), and gestodene (GST) were investigated in the recirculating rat liver perfusion model. Progestins were dissolved in buffered salt solution (MI), BSA containing (MII) or HSA and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) containing medium (MIII) at a concentration of about 60 ng/ml. Each 3-5 female rat livers were perfused with MI, MII, and MIII for 1 h. Perfusion medium, liver biopsies and total bile were analyzed for progestin levels by specific radioimmunoassays. Protein binding characteristics were determined in media and tissue. In all experiments bile (remaining liver) contained less than 1% (3%) of respective progestin dose demonstrating an almost complete biotransformation of all drugs by rat livers, irrespective of used medium. With MI, metabolic clearance rates (MCRs) and half-lives (t1/2) were not different for the four progestins. With MII, the actual progestin levels were generally higher than with MI, but half-lives were not changed. MCRs were close to the perfusion rate at the start of experiments but decreased to about 50%. MCRs of free and total drug levels were identical. Protein binding of 70-80% did not change with time. With MIII, the half-lives increased 1.5 fold (NET), 2.8 fold (KDG), 3.1 fold (GST) and 3.2 fold (LN) and MCRs accounted for 50-70% of perfusion rate at the beginning. The time courses of further MCR decreases were different for the various progestins and can be attributed to differences in specific binding of drugs to SHBG. Clearly, the presence of SHBG in MIII induced a shift of drug from liver tissue into the perfusion medium.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
