Effects of mixtures of herbicides on nutrient cycling and plant support considering current agriculture practices

The use of mixtures of pesticides and consecutive pesticide applications challenge current regulations aimed at protecting ecosystem health due to unpredictable effects of complex and dynamic mixtures. In this study, we tested the ecotoxicological effects of mixtures of herbicides, applied following a real application scheme of soybean production on soil health in a mesocosm experiment. The experiment included two sequential applications; first, glyphosate + dicamba + clethodim, and 30 days later, flumioxazin + metolachlor. Commercial products were used at the recommended doses and at two other concentrations: half and double the recommended dose. Soybean plants were exposed to the herbicide-contaminated soil from the time of sowing to the beginning of pod formation. Half of the plants were harvested at the vegetative stage and the remaining plants at the reproductive stage to evaluate endpoints related to plant support and nutrient cycling. Plant biomass was significantly affected during the vegetative stage at the recommended and double the recommended dose, with the effects being mixture-dose dependent. Lower total and arbuscular colonization of mycorrhizas were also observed in double the recommended dose, and intermediate results were observed for the recommended dose. Nodule mass and phosphorous concentration in plants decreased with increasing herbicide doses. By the end of the experiment, nodule mass and total mycorrhizal colonization were low in the plants treated with double the recommended dose of herbicides. However, both endpoints reached similar values to the control at lower herbicide doses. Plant height and phenology were only lower at double the recommended dose during the experiment. The use of non-standard endpoints evidenced that important soil functions were transiently or permanently affected, while the realistic application scheme accounted for the impact of the management practice currently used. Pesticide risk assessment should therefore, incorporate both issues to effectively protect the ecosystems.

Effect of supplementation with linseed or a blend of aromatic spices and time on feed on fatty acid composition, meat quality and consumer liking of meat from lambs fed dehydrated alfalfa or corn

Cross-bred lambs (n=72) were fed finishing diets using a factorial arrangement of treatments: BASAL DIET (alfalfa pellets or corn), SUPPLEMENT (none, linseed or aromatic spices), TIME ON FEED (41 or 83days). Carcass and meat quality traits, fatty acid composition, color stability and consumer liking were determined. Feeding alfalfa improved sensory ratings and fatty acid composition of lamb. However, corn or longer alfalfa feeding would be recommended if heavier and fatter carcasses are sought. Consumer liking and fatty acid composition of lamb were improved with addition of spices and linseed, respectively. But additional antioxidant strategies should be considered to delay meat color deterioration during storage if lambs are fed corn-linseed for 83days. Although alfalfa basal diet and linseed supplementation improved fatty acid composition, feeding the basal diets for at least 41days resulted in low n-3 fatty acid concentrations in muscle.

Alternative fibre sources for steers and calves fed high-grain feedlot diets

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of fibre source (FS) in high-grain feedlot diets on liveweight gain (LWG) of steers and calves and carcass traits of steers at slaughter. Eighteen steers (330 ± 27.3 kg) and 18 calves (153 ± 11.9 kg) were randomly allotted within animal category to one of three high-grain diets varying in the FS, including either grass hay (H, 66% neutral detergent fibre (NDF)), rice hulls (RH, 85% NDF) or wood chips (W, 90% NDF), and a total mixed ration formulated for equal levels of digestible DM, crude protein and NDF, within category. Animals were individually fed (3 kg DM/100 kg LW, distributed in four meals) during 56 days. The LW increased linearly with time in all treatments (P < 0.01). FS did not affect calves’ LWG (P > 0.05), but it resulted in differences in steers LWG (H: 1.77b; RH: 1.51c; W: 2.02a kg/day, P < 0.05). However, no differences were observed in hot carcass weight (P > 0.05), which resulted in higher carcass yield (P < 0.05) for steers fed RH (55.0%) compared with H (53.5%) and W (53.3%). There was a significant interaction (P < 0.05) for feed : gain ratio, with an improvement of this value observed only for steers fed the W diet. Although varying the FS affected rumination of calves and steers (P < 0.01) and the time spent eating of steers (P < 0.05), it did not represent any constraint for animal production. This study suggests by-products high in fibre content, such as RH and W, could be used in substitution to H in high-grain feedlot diets when fed at equal NDF concentration in the ration, both for calves and steers. Because calves are sometimes grown on a high-concentrate diet during winter before spring grazing, further research is needed to quantify potential residual effects on LWG after they return to pasture.

Short term fasting as a tool to design effective grazing strategies for lactating dairy cattle: a review

Varying the time since the last meal (i.e. fasting) is a means of manipulating foraging behaviour. Management practices that restrict grazing time, and/or change the timing of the grazing session, may be analogous to changes introduced with different fasting regimes, suggesting that the same pattern of responses on foraging behaviour could be expected. Concepts related to eating patterns of grazing dairy cows are briefly reviewed, and impacts of short-term (i.e. within day) fasts on ingestive behaviours are discussed. Finally, several experiments that examined impacts of short-term fasts on eating patterns, ingestive behaviours and performance of lactating dairy cows are reviewed. Management practices that create shorter grazing sessions (i.e. longer fasting periods before grazing), and/or involve afternoon grazing, result in longer initial grazing bouts, higher intake rates, reductions in rumination time during the grazing session, as well as more pronounced changes in rumen pH, concentrations of rumen fermentation metabolites and rumen load. All of these changes have been associated with improvements in performance of grazing dairy cattle. These concepts and findings have implications in defining optimal grazing strategies, as well as allowing cattle performance, sward conditions and nutrient balances to be predicted and analysed in an integrated manner.

Sperm production, testicular size, serum gonadotropins and testosterone levels in Merino and Corriedale breeds

The relationships between testis size, hormone secretion and sperm production were studied during the spring (December) and autumn (May) in rams of two breeds with different breeding seasons and body weights (Corriedale and Australian Merino) maintained on native pastures and under natural photoperiods in Uruguay. Blood samples were collected at 20-min intervals during a 260-360-min period in 13 rams (four Corriedale, nine Australian Merino) during the late spring and autumn. Rams were weighed and testis size was estimated by orchimetry at each time period. Sperm production was estimated during a 2-week period, 2 months before blood collection and during each week following every blood collection. There was no relationship between testicular size and sperm production measured at the same time, nor between live weight and sperm production. In contrast, testicular volume during the late spring was correlated with sperm production in the autumn (r = 0.65; P = 0.02). The autumn serum LH was higher in Corriedale than in Merino rams. LH pulsatility was unaffected by season, but LH pulse frequency tended to be higher in Corriedale than in Merino rams, particularly in the late spring (2.37 versus 1.56 pulses/6 h; P = 0.08). Serum testosterone concentration was similar in both breeds and seasons. FSH levels were higher in the late spring than in the autumn in both breeds (Corriedale: 2.83 +/- 0.48 versus 2.17 +/- 0.24 ng x mL(-1); Merino: 2.23 +/- 0.24 versus 1.88 +/- 0.17 ng x mL(-1)). FSH and testosterone concentrations during the late spring were positively correlated with autumn sperm production (P = 0.07 and P = 0.03, respectively). In conclusion, the present experiment suggests that LH secretion is not a good parameter for the prediction of sperm production. In contrast, in our conditions (breeds and native pastures) testicular size and testosterone or FSH concentrations from the late spring may be used to predict sperm production in the autumn.
