Tetris-inspired detector with neural network for radiation mapping

Radiation mapping has attracted widespread research attention and increased public concerns on environmental monitoring. Regarding materials and their configurations, radiation detectors have been developed to identify the position and strength of the radioactive sources. However, due to the complex mechanisms of radiation-matter interaction and data limitation, high-performance and low-cost radiation mapping is still challenging. Here, we present a radiation mapping framework using Tetris-inspired detector pixels. Applying inter-pixel padding for enhancing contrast between pixels and neural networks trained with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation data, a detector with as few as four pixels can achieve high-resolution directional prediction. A moving detector with Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) further achieved radiation position localization. Field testing with a simple detector has verified the capability of the MAP method for source localization. Our framework offers an avenue for high-quality radiation mapping with simple detector configurations and is anticipated to be deployed for real-world radiation detection.

Topological Superconductors from a Materials Perspective

Topological superconductors (TSCs) have garnered significant research and industry attention in the past two decades. By hosting Majorana bound states which can be used as qubits that are robust against local perturbations, TSCs offer a promising platform toward (nonuniversal) topological quantum computation. However, there has been a scarcity of TSC candidates, and the experimental signatures that identify a TSC are often elusive. In this Perspective, after a short review of the TSC basics and theories, we provide an overview of the TSC materials candidates, including natural compounds and synthetic material systems. We further introduce various experimental techniques to probe TSCs, focusing on how a system is identified as a TSC candidate and why a conclusive answer is often challenging to draw. We conclude by calling for new experimental signatures and stronger computational support to accelerate the search for new TSC candidates.

Machine Learning Magnetism Classifiers from Atomic Coordinates

The determination of magnetic structure poses a long-standing challenge in condensed matter physics and materials science. Experimental techniques such as neutron diffraction are resource-limited and require complex structure refinement protocols, while computational approaches such as first-principles density functional theory (DFT) need additional semi-empirical correction, and reliable prediction is still largely limited to collinear magnetism. Here, we present a machine learning model that aims to classify the magnetic structure by inputting atomic coordinates containing transition metal and rare earth elements. By building a Euclidean equivariant neural network that preserves the crystallographic symmetry, the magnetic structure (ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and non-magnetic) and magnetic propagation vector (zero or non-zero) can be predicted with an average accuracy of 77.8% and 73.6%. In particular, a 91% accuracy is reached when predicting no magnetic ordering even if the structure contains magnetic element(s). Our work represents one step forward to solving the grand challenge of full magnetic structure determination.

Efficient solvent suppression with adiabatic inversion for 1H-detected solid-state NMR

This study introduces a conceptually new solvent suppression scheme with adiabatic inversion pulses for ¹H-detected multidimensional solid-state NMR (SSNMR) of biomolecules and other systems, which is termed "Solvent suppression of Liquid signal with Adiabatic Pulse" (SLAP). ¹H-detected 2D ¹³C/¹H SSNMR data of uniformly ¹³C- and ¹⁵N-labeled GB1 sample using ultra-fast magic angle spinning at a spinning rate of 60 kHz demonstrated that the SLAP scheme showed up to 3.5-fold better solvent suppression performance over a traditional solvent-suppression scheme for SSNMR, MISSISSIPPI (Zhou and Rienstra, J Magn Reson 192:167-172, 2008) with 2/3 of the average RF power.

A conductive metal-organic framework photoanode

We report the development of photosensitizing arrays based on conductive metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that enable light harvesting and efficient charge separation. Zn₂TTFTB (TTFTB = tetrathiafulvalene tetrabenzoate) MOFs are deposited directly onto TiO₂ photoanodes and structurally characterized by pXRD and EXAFS measurements. Photoinduced interfacial charge transfer dynamics are investigated by combining time-resolved THz spectroscopy and quantum dynamics simulations. Sub-600 fs electron injection into TiO₂ is observed for Zn₂TTFTB–TiO₂ and is compared to the corresponding dynamics for TTFTB–TiO₂ analogues that lack the extended MOF architecture. Rapid electron injection from the MOF into TiO₂ is enhanced by facile migration of the hole away from the interfacial region. Holes migrate through strongly coupled HOMO orbitals localized on the tetrathiafulvalene cores of the columnar stacks of the MOF, whereas electrons are less easily transferred through the spiral staircase arrangement of phenyl substituents of the MOF. The reported findings suggest that conductive MOFs could be exploited as novel photosensitizing arrays in applications to slow, and thereby make difficult, photocatalytic reactions such as those required for water-splitting in artificial photosynthesis.

Metal-Organic Framework Photoconductivity via Time-Resolved Terahertz Spectroscopy

While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been under thorough investigation over the past two decades, photoconductive MOFs are an emerging class of materials with promising applications in light harvesting and photocatalysis. To date, there is not a general method to investigate the photoconductivity of polycrystalline MOF samples as-prepared. Herein, we utilize time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy along with a new sample preparation method to determine the photoconductivity of Zn₂TTFTB, an archetypical conductive MOF, in a noncontact manner. Using this technique, we were able to gain insight into MOF photoconductivity dynamics with subpicosecond resolution, revealing two distinct carrier lifetimes of 0.6 and 31 ps and a long-lived component of several ns. Additionally, we determined the frequency dependent photoconductivity of Zn₂TTFTB which was shown to follow Drude-Smith behavior. Such insights are crucially important with regard to developing the next generation of functional photoconductive MOF materials.

A case of feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia limited to the mesentery

An entire, female, mixed‐breed cat of unknown age was presented with a 6‐week history of lethargy, anorexia and vomiting. There was an increase in the number of white blood cells in the blood, including neutrophils and eosinophils; moderate anaemia; ascites; and possible mesenteric peritonitis. Exploratory laparotomy revealed firm, multifocal small nodules in the mesentery. As the nodules were surgically unresectable, they were biopsied. Histologically, the nodules were composed of thin trabeculae of dense collagen fibres mixed with plump fibroblasts and numerous eosinophils, consistent with feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia. Bacteria were not detected on histological examination of the nodules and cytology of the ascites. Remission of disease occurred following treatment with prednisolone and ciclosporin A for 22 days and antibiotics for 40 days. After remission, ciclosporin A was administered for 236 days and then discontinued. Eosinophilia also resolved after treatment with ciclosporin A. The cat is still alive and in good condition on day 689. This report describes what may be an atypical case of feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia, lacking involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, and was apparently cured by treatment that involved ciclosporin A.

Clinical evaluation of the Elecsys beta-CrossLaps serum assay, a new assay for degradation products of type I collagen C-tlopeptides

BACKGROUND

The Elecsys beta-CrossLaps serum assay measures type I collagen degradation fragments (beta-CTx) that contain the beta-isomerized octapeptide EKAHD-beta-GGR. We investigated the analytical performance of the assay and changes in beta-CrossLaps in patients with metabolic bone diseases.

METHODS

The electrochemiluminescent sandwich immunoassay uses two monoclonal antibodies directed against different regions of the linear EKAHD-beta-GGR.

RESULTS

beta-CrossLaps (beta-CTx) immunoreactivity was stable in serum and plasma stored at 4 degrees C for 24 h or at room temperature for 4 h, and it did not decrease appreciably in samples stored at -30 degrees C for 12 weeks. Nine cycles of repeated freezing-thawing did not affect serum beta-CTx. The intra- and interassay imprecision (CVs) for four samples was < or = 2.6% (n = 10) and < or = 4.1% (n = 10), respectively. The mean day-to-day biological variation (CV) was 20% in 10 postmenopausal women (n = 10 days). Serum beta-CTx and osteocalcin were correlated in patients with hyperparathyroidism (r = 0.796; P <0.0001; n = 28), chronic renal failure on hemodialysis (r = 0.784; P = 0.0003; n = 16), hypoparathyroidism (r = 0.950; P = 0.0001; n = 11), and pseudohypoparathyroidism (r = 0.987; P = 0.130; n = 4). Serum beta-CTx decreased by 47.4% +/- 8.8% (mean +/- SD) and 60.7% +/- 6.5% at 3 and 6 months, respectively, after initiation of estrogen replacement therapy in 34 women. These decreases were greater than the decreases in urinary excretion of deoxypyridinoline (31.8% +/- 3.9% and 38.1% +/- 4.4%, respectively) or pyridinoline cross-linked C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (15.9% +/- 3.9% and 16.9% +/- 4.6%, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

The Elecsys beta-CrossLaps serum assay provides a potentially useful tool for assessing bone resorption state, including its response to estrogen replacement therapy.

[Calcium supplement and bone metabolism]

Calcium supplementation ameliorates the elevated bone metabolism, especially for the elderly osteoporotic patients, because, calcium suppresses PTH level through the increase of serum calcium level. Urinary deoxypyridinolin, and/or NTx can detect the metabolic changes induced by calcium supplementation. Serum markers such as serum CTx or NTx will detect the small changes more clearly in near future.

Remission of insulin autoimmune syndrome in a patient with Grave's disease by treatment with methimazole

The patient, a 24-year-old man, had suffered from hunger, sweating, tachycardia and palpitation for three years. He was diagnosed as having Graves' disease (GD) and treated with methimazole (MMI) for 3 months. He noted that palpitation and perspiration seemed to particularly occur when he was hungry, and thus he was examined to determine whether these symptoms were caused by hypoglycemia. As a markedly elevated immunoreactive insulin level and the presence of insulin antibody in serum were found, he was diagnosed as having insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS). HLA typing revealed the patient to be positive for group Bw62/Cw4/DR4, which is reportedly a specific HLA type in MMI-treated euthyoroid GD patients with IAS. In spite of the continuation of MMI treatment, the % binding of IRI decreased and the hypoglycemic episode disappeared. In contrast to the previously reported MMI induced IAS in GD cases, MMI is unlikely to have exacerbated IAS in the present case, although his HLA combination is identical to that of the previous cases.

Combination effects of tamoxifen plus 5-fluorouracil on gastric cancer cell lines in vitro

We tested the effect of tamoxifen alone and tamoxifen plus 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) on proliferation of two different types of gastric cancer cell lines using the WST-1 method. A high dose of tamoxifen suppressed the proliferation of KATOIII cells (poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma), but MKN28 cells (well-differentiated adenocarcinoma) were not affected. The combination of the two drugs resulted in a synergistic anti-proliferative activity on KATOIII cells. On the other hand, in the combination therapy, tamoxifen stimulated MKN28 cells to proliferate in a dose-dependent manner. TGF-beta1 secretion was not changed in KATOIII cells by tamoxifen plus 5-FU treatment but was down-regulated in MKN28 cells. Both cancer cell lines were judged as intracellular estrogen receptor (ER) negative. These data suggest that the anti-proliferative effects of tamoxifen plus 5-FU on KATOIII cells were not dependent on ER expression or TGF-beta1 secretion. On the other hand, their proliferative effects on MKN28 cells might be, in part, caused by the reduced secretion of TGF-beta1.
