Abstract
The study investigated students’ perception of a radio interviewer's capabilities and personality. Half the subjects were told he was blind and the rest were not given this information. Opinions relating to the ‘blind’ interviewer were significantly more favorable. This finding contradicts the extensive literature indicating stereotyped negative attitudes toward the blind. Several explanations of the findings are discussed.

Abstract
Second language (L2) learners differ greatly in language proficiency, which is partially explained by variability in native language (L1) skills. The present fMRI study explored the neural underpinnings of the L1-L2 link. Twenty L2 learners completed a tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) task that required retrieving words in L1. Low-proficiency L2 learners showed greater functional connectivity for correct and TOT responses between the left inferior frontal gyrus and right-sided homologues of the temporoparietal regions that support phonological processing (e.g., supramarginal gyrus), possibly reflecting difficulty with phonological retrieval. High-proficiency L2 learners showed greater connectivity for erroneous responses (TOT in particular) between the left inferior frontal gyrus and regions of left medial temporal lobe (e.g., hippocampus), associated with implicit learning processes. The difference between low- and high-proficiency L2 learners in functional connectivity, which is evident even during L1 processing, may affect L2 learning processes and outcomes.

Abstract
The effects of vitamin D depriva tion on the chick heart were investi gated from three aspects: cardiac contractility (±dP/dT), intracellular high-energy phosphorus compounds, and structural differences. Four- week-old vitamin D-deficient chicks were divided into four groups: Group A served as the normal group and re ceived subcutaneous injections of cholecalciferol; Groups B and C were vitamin D-deficient hearts but per fused differently; Group D received daily subcutaneous injections of 5 μg of 1,25(OH) 2D3. When the isolated spontaneously beating hearts (modi fied Langendorff preparation) were perfused with Krebs-Henseleit (KH) solution containing a calcium concen tration of 2.5mM, the myocardial contractility of the vitamin D-defi cient hearts was significantly in creased when compared with group A. After the isolated heart had beaten for one hour, the myocardial contractility in the vitamin D-defi cient hearts was found to decline to significantly lower values. Presacri fice administration of 1,25(OH) 2D3 improved cardiac performance. Vita min D deficiency resulted in an en hanced rate of decline of the intracellular high-energy phosphorus compounds. No differences were found in the microscopic study. These observations suggest that vitamin D has a role in cardiac function.

Haptoglobin 1-1 Genotype Modulates the Association of Glycemic Control With Hippocampal Volume in Elderly Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes 2017; 66:2927-2932. Abstract
Recent evidence suggests that glycemic control is associated with cognitive function in older patients with type 2 diabetes who are carriers of the haptoglobin (Hp) 1-1 genotype compared with noncarriers. We assessed whether poor glycemic control in Hp 1-1 carriers is more strongly associated with smaller hippocampal volume than in noncarriers. Hippocampal volume was generated from high-resolution structural T1 MRI obtained for 224 participants (28 Hp 1-1 carriers [12.5%] and 196 noncarriers [87.5%]) from the Israel Diabetes and Cognitive Decline (IDCD) study, who had a mean (SD) number of years in the Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS) registry of 8.35 (2.63) and a mean (SD) HbA1c level of 6.66 (0.73)% [49 mmol/mol]. A stronger negative association between right hippocampal volume and HbA1c was found in patients with the Hp 1-1 genotype, with a 0.032-mL decrease in right hippocampal volume per 14% increase in HbA1c (P = 0.0007) versus a 0.009-mL decrease in Hp 1-1 noncarriers (P = 0.047), after adjusting for total intracranial volume, age, sex, follow-up years in the registry, and cardiovascular factor (interaction, P = 0.025). This indicates that 29.66% of the total variance in right hippocampal volume is explained by HbA1c levels among Hp 1-1 carriers and that 3.22% is explained by HbA1c levels among Hp 1-1 noncarriers. Our results suggest that the hippocampus of Hp 1-1 carriers may be more vulnerable to the insults of poor glycemic control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metal-on-metal total hip prostheses (MoM-THR) have been shown to produce hypersensitivity reactions and fluid collection (pseudotumor) by the hip as well as high blood metal ions levels (BMILs). OBJECTIVES To evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in selected body tissues around the hip of patients who underwent MoM hip replacement and to correlate to BMILs. METHODS Sixty-one MRI hip examinations in 54 post-MoM-THR patients (18 males, 36 females, mean age 65 years) were retrospectively evaluated independently by two readers. The mean S/N ratio in a region of interest was calculated for periprosthetic pseudotumor collection (PPC), the bladder, fat, and muscle on axial T1w, FSE-T2w, and short tau inversion recovery (STIR) sequences on the same location. BMILs were retrieved from patient files. RESULTS PPC was detected in 32 patients (52%) with an average volume of 82.48 mm3. BMIL did not correlate with the presence of PPCs but positively correlated with the PPC's volume. A trend for positive correlation was found between BMILs and S/N levels of STIR images for muscle and bladder as well as for PPC and cobalt levels. A trend for correlation was also seen between BMIL with PPC's T1 w S/N. CONCLUSIONS Alteration of MRI S/N for different hip tissues showed a tendency for correlation with BMILs, possibly suggesting that metal deposition occurs in the PPC as well as in the surrounding tissues and bladder.

Abstract
Signaling mediated by the Ras-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) pathway often leads to the phosphorylation of transcriptional regulators, thereby modulating their activity and causing concerted changes in gene expression. In Drosophila, the induction of multiple Ras-Erk pathway target genes depends on prior phosphorylation of the general co-repressor Groucho, a modification that downregulates its repressive function. Here, we show that TLE1, one of the four human Groucho orthologs, is similarly phosphorylated in response to Ras-Erk pathway activation, and that this modification attenuates its capacity to repress transcription. Specifically, unphosphorylated TLE1 dominantly suppresses the induction of Ras-Erk pathway target genes in cultured human cells, and the expression of an unphosphorylatable TLE1 derivative causes severe phenotypes in a transgenic Drosophila model system, whereas a phosphomimetic variant of TLE1 exerts only negligible effects. We present data indicating that TLE1 is rapidly excluded from the nucleus following epidermal growth factor receptor pathway activation, an effect that likely accounts for its inability to mediate effective repression under such conditions. Significantly, we find that unphosphorylated TLE1 blocks oncogenic phenotypes induced by mutated H-Ras in human mammary cells, both in vitro and following their implantation in mice. Collectively, our data strongly indicate that phosphorylation of TLE family members and the consequent downregulation of their repressor function is a key conserved step in the transcriptional responses to Ras-Erk signaling, and possibly a critical event in the tumorigenic effects caused by excessive Ras-Erk pathway activity.

Abstract
The study employed the signal-detection paradigm as a model for investigating age related biological vs cognitive (decision) effects on perceptual behavior. Old and young subjects reported the presence or absence of sugar in threshold level solutions and tap water. It was found that the aged subjects displayed a higher detection threshold. They also obtained a higher (stricter) criterion of decision, fewer false-positives and a greater false-negatives-to-total-errors ratio. These findings were interpreted as strategic behavior motivated by the elderly subjects' greater need to perform well through reducing the error rate. A post-hoc interview found that most subjects equated the term 'error' with false-positives only. Therefore, the negative response bias found among the elderly subjects may represent a strategic attempt to reduce the rate of false-positive errors. It is also speculated that it may reflect a need to save energy, since negative responses imply an unwillingness to commit oneself to exert effort.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We assessed whether the apolipoprotein ε4 (APOE4) genotype affects the relationship of variability in long-term glycemic control (measured by HbA1c SD of multiple measurements) with white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS WMH volume was generated from structural T1 and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery MRI in each subject. The analysis included 124 subjects; 27 (21.8%) had one or more APOE4 alleles. RESULTS HbA1c variability was associated with significantly higher WMH in APOE4 carriers (r = 0.47, P = 0.03), controlling for age, sex, mean HbA1c, number of follow-up years, and a composite of cardiovascular risk factors, but not in noncarriers (r = -0.04, P = 0.71; P for interaction = 0.050). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that the APOE4 genotype affects the relationship of long-term glycemic control with WMH load so that APOE4 carriers may be more vulnerable to the insults of poor control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metal-on-metal (MoM) hip prostheses were shown to have high failure rates including the formation of periprosthetic cystic masses called periprosthetic pseudotumor collections (PPCs). PURPOSE To compare MRI prevalence and size of PPCs in patients after bilateral total-hip-replacement (THR) in which at least one hip was replaced by a MoM prosthesis. MATERIAL AND METHODS All sequential MRI examinations of patients with bilateral THR in which at least one is MoM (2010-2013) were retrospectively evaluated. MRIs were analyzed separately by two readers for the presence and size of PPCs. These were compared between MoM and non-MoM implants and between patients with unilateral or bilateral-MoM prostheses. Blood metal ion levels were also compared. RESULTS Seventy hips of 35 patients (male:female ratio, 9:26; mean age, 64 years; age range, 35-82 years) were assessed. Sixteen patients (45%) underwent bilateral MoM-THRs and 19 (55%) had one MoM and the other non-MoM, yielding 51 MoM THRs and 19 non-MoM THRs. Twenty-eight PPCs were detected in 19 patients (54%): 26 in MoM THRs (51%) and two in non-MoM THRs (10.5%, P = 0.00009). The mean PPC volume in the MoM implants (107 mm(3)) was higher than that of the non-MoM implants (18 mm(3), P = 0.49). Cobalt/chromium blood levels were 78 µg/L/25 µg/L for bilateral MoM THRs and 21 µg/L/10 µg/L for unilateral MoM implants (P = 0.1 and 0.16, respectively). CONCLUSION PPCs are more prevalent in MoM THRs compared to non-MoM THRs. Larger PPC volumes and higher blood metal ion levels were detected in patients with bilateral MoM THRs compared to unilateral MoM THRs (P > 0.05).

Abstract
AIM Despite clear evidence of immune system involvement in the pathogenesis of myocarditis, the treatment of myocarditis remains nonspecific and supportive. We sought to test the hypothesis that injection of a collagen-based implant into the inflamed myocardium would stabilize the left ventricular (LV) wall and prevent adverse remodeling and dysfunction. METHODS AND RESULTS Autoimmune myocarditis was induced in 42 male Lewis rats. Development of myocarditis was evaluated and confirmed by serial echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance scans, LV wall thickening, global and regional LV wall motion abnormalities, and in some cases pericardial effusion. Sick animals were randomized to either injectable collagen implantation or saline injection into the anterior inflamed myocardium 14 days after immunization. Significantly, injectable collagen implantation improved 31-day survival compared with controls (85.7% vs 50%; P = .03). Furthermore, although injectable collagen significantly attenuated LV systolic and diastolic dilatation and preserved LV geometry and function, control animals developed significant LV dilatation and dysfunction. These favorable effects on LV remodeling were confirmed by postmortem morphometry. Significantly, the injectable collagen implant attenuated cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and infiltration of macrophages and lymphocytes into the myocardium. CONCLUSIONS The present study shows, for the first time, that injectable collagen biomaterial improves survival and attenuates cardiac inflammation, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, LV remodeling, and dysfunction in the early period after myocarditis in rats. Our findings suggest a new biomaterial-based strategy to ameliorate the devastating effects of myocarditis.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to assess the use of a 3 T clinical cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) scanner to detect injury to the heart in experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM). METHODS AND RESULTS The use of 3 T CMR for the detection of cardiac injury was assessed in EAM (n = 55) and control (n = 10) male Lewis rats. Animals were evaluated with serial CMR imaging studies, using a 3 T scanner, and with 2D echocardiography before, and at 2 and 5 weeks after EAM induction. By CMR, regional wall motion abnormalities were noted in seven out of eight rats with myocarditis 5 weeks after induction. Subsequently, the rats developed significant left ventricular (LV) dilatation, wall thickening, and pericardial effusion. Average LV systolic and diastolic volumes increased from 131 ± 10 to 257 ± 20 µL (P = 0.0008), and from 309 ± 14 to 412 ± 24 µL (P < 0.0001), and ejection fraction markedly deteriorated (from 58 ± 2 to 37 ± 5%; P = 0.0003). Areas of fibrosis were located by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) CMR at the subepicardium, mainly within the anterior, lateral, and inferior walls. The extent and location of LGE were highly correlated (r = 0.94; P < 0.0001) with areas of myocardial fibrosis by histopathology, with 85% sensitivity and 86% specificity. CONCLUSION A clinical 3 T CMR scanner enables accurate detection, quantification, and monitoring of experimental myocarditis in rats, and could be used for translational research to study the pathophysiology of the disease and evaluate novel therapies.

Abstract
Mirror writing occurs in healthy children, in various pathologies and occasionally in healthy adults. There are only scant experimental data on the underlying brain processes. Eight, right-handed, healthy young adults were scanned (BOLD-fMRI) before and after practicing left-hand mirror-writing (lh-MW) over seven sessions. They wrote dictated words, using either the right hand with regularly oriented writing or lh-MW. An MRI compatible stylus-point recording system was used and online visual feedback was provided. Practice resulted in increased speed and readability of lh-MW but the number of movement segments was unchanged. Post-training signal increases occurred in visual, right lateral and medial premotor areas, and in right anterior and posterior peri-sylvian areas corresponding to language areas. These results suggest that lh-MW may constitute a latent ability that can be reinstated by a relatively brief practice experience. Concurrently, right hemisphere language processing areas may emerge, reflecting perhaps a reduction in trans-hemispheric suppression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myocarditis is a life-threatening heart disease characterized by myocardial inflammation, necrosis, and chronic fibrosis. While mast cell inhibition has been suggested to prevent fibrosis in rat myocarditis, little is known about its effectiveness in attenuating cardiac remodeling and dysfunction in myocarditis. Thus, we sought to test the hypothesis that mast cell inhibition will attenuate the inflammatory reaction and associated left ventricular (LV) remodeling and dysfunction after fulminant autoimmune myocarditis. Methods and RESULTS To induce experimental autoimmune myocarditis, we immunized 30 rats with porcine cardiac myosin (PCM) twice at a 7-day interval. On day 8 animals were randomized into treatment with either an intraperitoneal (IP) injection of 25mg/kg of cromolyn sodium (n = 13) or an equivalent volume (∼0.5 mL IP) of normal saline (n = 11). All animals were scanned by serial echocardiography studies before treatment (baseline echocardiogram) and after 20 days of cromolyn sodium (28 days after immunization). Furthermore, serial cardiac magnetic resonance was performed in a subgroup of 12 animals. After 20 days of treatment (28 days from first immunization), hearts were harvested for histopathological analysis. By echocardiography, cromolyn sodium prevented LV dilatation and attenuated LV dysfunction, compared with controls. Postmortem analysis of hearts showed that cromolyn sodium reduced myocardial fibrosis, as well as the number and size of cardiac mast cells in the inflamed myocardium, compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that mast cell inhibition with cromolyn sodium attenuates adverse LV remodeling and dysfunction in myocarditis. This mechanism-based therapy is clinically relevant and could improve the outcome of patients at risk for inflammatory cardiomyopathy and heart failure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Responding to psychosocial needs of patients is an important element of medical practice and is dependent on the psychosocial abilities of the physician. One of the aims of teaching doctor-patient communication in medical schools is to strengthen these qualities. We assessed changes in the psychosocial abilities of first-year medical students participating in a year-long clinical communication course. METHODS Sixty-eight first-year medical students and 49 students from the Medical Laboratories School (control group) participated in the study. The students completed, once each at the beginning (October) and at the end (July) of the course, a structured questionnaire that included a psychosocial abilities measure and sociodemographic details. RESULTS No significant differences were found between the two groups of students regarding their sociodemographic characteristics. Furthermore, the medical students and the control group did not differ significantly in their psychosocial abilities mean scores at the beginning of the communication course (baseline). At the end of the course, a significant improvement in mean scores was found among medical students compared with an insignificant decline among the control group. CONCLUSION Participation in an extensive clinical doctor-patient communication course guided by multidisciplinary teams may strengthen psychosocial abilities of medical students. The study needs to be replicated with a larger sample size.

Abstract
The aim of this article is to report on the importance and challenges of a time-resolved and spatio-temporal analysis of fMRI data from complex cognitive processes and associated disorders using a study on developmental dyscalculia (DD). Participants underwent fMRI while judging the incorrectness of multiplication results, and the data were analyzed using a sequence of methods, each of which progressively provided more a detailed picture of the spatio-temporal aspect of this disease. Healthy subjects and subjects with DD performed alike behaviorally though they exhibited parietal disparities using traditional voxel-based group analyses. Further and more detailed differences, however, surfaced with a time-resolved examination of the neural responses during the experiment. While performing inter-group comparisons, a third group of subjects with dyslexia (DL) but with no arithmetic difficulties was included to test the specificity of the analysis and strengthen the statistical base with overall fifty-eight subjects. Surprisingly, the analysis showed a functional dissimilarity during an initial reading phase for the group of dyslexic but otherwise normal subjects, with respect to controls, even though only numerical digits and no alphabetic characters were presented. Thus our results suggest that time-resolved multi-variate analysis of complex experimental paradigms has the ability to yield powerful new clinical insights about abnormal brain function. Similarly, a detailed compilation of aberrations in the functional cascade may have much greater potential to delineate the core processing problems in mental disorders.

Abstract
Mice with experimental neuropsychiatric lupus (NPSLE), induced by anti-ribosomal-P antibodies, developed depression-like behavior and a diminished sense of smell. Manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) allows in vivo mapping of functional neuronal connections in the brain, including the olfactory tract. The aim of this study was to analyze and describe, via the MEMRI technique, the effect of the anti-ribosomal-P injection on the olfactory pathway. Twenty mice were intra-cerebra-ventricular injected to the right hemisphere: 10 with human anti-ribosomal-P antibodies and 10 with human IgG antibodies (control). Depression was addressed by forced swimming test and smell function was evaluated by smelling different concentrations of menthol. MEMRI was used to investigate the olfactory system in these mice. Passive transfer of anti-ribosomal-P to mice resulted in a depression-like behavior, accompanied with a significant deficit in olfactory function. MEMRI of these mice demonstrated significant reduction (P < 0.001) in normalized manganese enhancement ratios of olfactory structures, compared to control mice. We concluded that an impaired olfactory neuronal function in mice with experimental depression, mediated by passive transfer of human-anti-ribosomal-P, can be demonstrated by MEMRI.

Abstract
CONTEXT The Psychological Medicine Inventory (PMI) was first developed to measure physicians' reported interest level, confidence and perceived ability to address the psychological aspects of patient care. A student version of this scale has since been proposed (PMI-S). OBJECTIVE To further examine the psychometric properties of responses to this student version and to confirm a 2-factor response structure. METHODS A total of 213 first-year medical students at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev participated in this study. They completed the PMI-S (translated into Hebrew) and a socio-demographic questionnaire. The viability of the 2-factor structure of PMI-S responses was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). FINDINGS Consistent with the original English language version, CFA supported a 2-factor solution (i.e., psychological abilities and psychological sensitivity). All goodness-of-fit indices were found to be within ideal parameters. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Results of this study suggest that the PMI-S can be used to assess psychosocial competence and abilities of medical students and to evaluate the effectiveness of psycho-educational programs aimed at improving their psychosocial abilities.

Abstract
The present study attempts to challenge the orbitofrontal cortex by using a learning paradigm which is specifically subserved by this cortical region. We implemented a version of alternation learning specifically designed for fMRI and assessed the cognitive performance and fMRI response in wide range of social anxiety disorder (SAD) severity (n=15). The main regions that were activated by the alternation learning task included portions of frontal and orbitofrontal cortex as well as the calcarine fissure. Correlations between brain activation and performance of the alternation learning task were found, among other regions, in the left and right orbitofrontal cortex. Highest correlations between degree of activation and the anxiety scores as assessed by the Leibovitch Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) were obtained in the left temporal region as well as orbitofrontal cortex. This study supports the involvement of the orbitofrontal cortex in emotion and cognitive regulation in SAD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accumulating data suggest that schizophrenia patients' mental status might be modulated by their core/brain temperature. Hence, we intended to assess in vivo brain temperature (Tb) of schizophrenia patients vs. healthy subjects and to evaluate its potential association with patients' mental status. METHODS Absolute values of Tb were measured in 9 neuroleptic-treated schizophrenia patients and 10 healthy comparison subjects using 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Values were extracted by measuring the chemical shift between the peaks of water and N-acetyl-aspartate in the 1H MRS spectra. RESULTS A substantial (about 1.1 degrees C) and significantly higher occipital-frontal temperature-gradient was found in the schizophrenia patients compared to the healthy controls (1.27 degrees C vs. 0.18 degrees C; p=0.032). Furthermore, a trend was found between the above mentioned occipital-frontal temperature-gradient in the schizophrenia patients and the severity of their psychopathology, as assessed by the total Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) scores (r=0.61; p=0.08). CONCLUSIONS Our findings corroborate previous results indicating putative correlation between core/brain temperature and the mental status of schizophrenia patients, emphasizing the possible role of within patients decreased frontal temperature and a significant occipital-frontal temperature-gradient as modulators of psychopathology. In addition, the MRS technique used for brain temperature assessment seems to be a potential non-invasive method to assess in vivo absolute Tb in schizophrenia.

Abstract
Isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency is a rare genetic neurometabolic disease. The first symptoms of this disorder (similar to symptoms of ischemic events) may lead to misdiagnosis and to subsequent birth of affected children in these families. This study characterizes the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and (for the first time, to our knowledge) the MR spectroscopy features of isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency to provide a means for early and correct diagnosis. Three patients with isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency are studied who manifested intractable seizures and severe hypotonia in the immediate postnatal period with an unknown diagnosis, despite extensive workup. MR imaging and proton MR spectroscopy examinations were performed early in the neonatal period in 2 infants and after 5 months in the third infant. The prominent MR features were early cystic white matter damage, accompanied by profound cerebral atrophy in the third infant. Compared with hypoxic-ischemic disorder, MR findings in isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency demonstrate a more severe condition, without subsequent recovery. The MR spectroscopy studies indicate early onset of energetic and metabolic imbalance. Urine stick findings demonstrated high sulfite levels in 2 patients, and the final diagnosis was subsequently made based on molecular, biochemical, and genetic findings. Magnetic resonance imaging and MR spectroscopy measurements may help differentiate isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency from hypoxic-ischemic condition in patients in whom this diagnosis is not clinically suspected and may lead to further genetic antenatal inquiry that might prevent the birth of other infants affected with this severe and incurable congenital disease.

Abstract
Object related areas in the human ventral stream were previously shown to be activated, in a shape-selective manner, by luminance, motion, and texture cues. We report on the preferential activation of these areas by stereo cues defining shape. To assess the relationship of this activation to object recognition, we employed a perceptual stereo effect, which profoundly affects object recognition. The stimuli consisted of stereo-defined line drawings of objects that either protruded in front of a flat background ("front"), or were sunk into the background ("back"). Despite the similarity in the local feature structure of the two conditions, object recognition was superior in the "front" compared to the "back" configuration. We measured both recognition rates and fMRI signal from the human visual cortex while subjects viewed these stimuli. The results reveal shape selective activation from images of objects defined purely by stereoscopic cues in the human ventral stream. Furthermore, they show a significant correlation between recognition and fMRI signal in the object-related occipito-temporal cortex (lateral occipital complex).

Abstract
Molecular imaging techniques allow visualization of specific gene products and their physiological processes in living tissues. In this study, we present a new approach for molecular imaging of endogenous tyrosine kinase receptor activity. Met and its ligand hepatocyte growth factor scatter factor (HGF/SF), which mediate mitogenicity, tumorigenicity, and angiogenesis, were used as a model. HGF/SF and Met play a significant role in the pathogenesis and biology of a wide variety of human epithelial cancers and, therefore, may serve as potential targets for cancer prognosis and therapy. We have shown previously that in vitro activation of Met by HGF/SF increases oxygen consumption. In this study, we demonstrate that Met activation in vivo by HGF/SF alters the hemodynamics of normal and malignant Met-expressing tissues. Tumor-bearing BALB/C mice were i.v. injected with HGF/SF and imaged using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Doppler ultrasound. Organs and tumors expressing high levels of Met showed the most substantial alteration in blood oxygenation levels as measured by blood oxygenation level depended (BOLD)-MRI. No significant alteration was observed in tumors or organs that does not express Met. In the liver, which expresses high levels of Met, MRI signal alteration of about 60% was observed. In the kidneys, signal alteration was approximately 30%, and no change was observed in muscles. The extent of MRI signal alteration was also in correlation with HGF/SF doses. Injection of 7 and 170 ng/g body weight resulted in signal alteration of 5% and 30%, respectively, in tumors. Doppler ultrasound measurements demonstrated that these MRI changes are at least partially attributable to altered blood flow. These hemodynamic alterations, measured by MRI and Doppler ultrasound, were used in this study for the molecular imaging of Met activity in vivo. This novel molecular imaging technique may be used for in vivo diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of Met-expressing tumors.

Abstract
Leukodystrophy with macrocephaly as the main features of infantile neurodegenerative disease are characteristics of Canavan's disease, L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria, type I glutaric aciduria, and Alexander's disease. Also occasionally described are occidental congenital muscular dystrophy, G(M)2-gangliosidosis, metachromatic leukodystrophy, Krabbe's disease, and mucopolysaccharidosis. Since 1995, over 60 patients with a new syndrome, vacuolating megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy, have been described. The syndrome is characterized by macrocephaly, a slowly progressive clinical course of ataxia, spastic paraparesis, and seizure disorder with relatively spared cognition. Unlike other leukodystrophies with macrocephaly (except Alexander's disease), no metabolic marker has been found. We describe a similar group of 12 patients from two different Jewish ethnic origins in whom consanguinity is prominent. These patients have neuroimaging features and magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings indicating that there is an initial increase in white-matter edema with subsequent cystic formation. Consistent with loss of tissue in these areas, brain metabolites are reduced. The familial incidence in this group of patients is suggestive of autosomal-recessive inheritance.

Abstract
Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in combined functional selectivity and retinotopic mapping tests to reveal object-related visual areas in the human occipital lobe. Subjects were tested with right, left, up, or down hemivisual field stimuli which were composed of images of natural objects (faces, animals, man-made objects) or highly scrambled (1,024 elements) versions of the same images. In a similar fashion, the horizontal and vertical meridians were mapped to define the borders of these areas. Concurrently, the same cortical sites were tested for their sensitivity to image-scrambling by varying the number of scrambled picture fragments (from 16-1,024) while controlling for the Fourier power spectrum of the pictures and their order of presentation. Our results reveal a stagewise decrease in retinotopy and an increase in sensitivity to image-scrambling. Three main distinct foci were found in the human visual object recognition pathway (Ungerleider and Haxby [1994]: Curr Opin Neurobiol 4:157-165): 1) Retinotopic primary areas V1-3 did not exhibit significant reduction in activation to scrambled images. 2) Areas V4v (Sereno et al., [1995]: Science 268:889-893) and V3A (De Yoe et al., [1996]: Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 93:2382-2386; Tootell et al., [1997]: J Neurosci 71:7060-7078) manifested both retinotopy and decreased activation to highly scrambled images. 3) The essentially nonretinotopic lateral occipital complex (LO) (Malach et al., [1995]: Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 92:8135-8139; Tootell et al., [1996]: Trends Neurosci 19:481-489) exhibited the highest sensitivity to image scrambling, and appears to be homologous to macaque the infero-temporal (IT) cortex (Tanaka [1996]: Curr Opin Neurobiol 523-529). Breaking the images into 64, 256, or 1,024 randomly scrambled blocks reduced activation in LO voxels. However, many LO voxels remained significantly activated by mildly scrambled images (16 blocks). These results suggest the existence of object-fragment representation in LO.

Abstract
To investigate the relationship between perceptual awareness and brain activity, we measured both recognition performance and fMRI signal from object-related areas in human cortex while images were presented briefly using a masking protocol. Our results suggest that recognition performance is correlated with selective activation in object areas. Selective activation was correlated to object naming when exposure duration was varied from 20 to 500 milliseconds. Subjects' recognition during identical visual stimulation could be enhanced by training, which also increased the fMRI signal. Overall, the correlation between recognition performance and fMRI signal was highest in occipitotemporal object areas (the lateral occipital complex).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The association between opportunities for continuing medical education (CME) and primary physicians' job stress, burnout and job dissatisfaction has not been investigated. It was hypothesized that participation in CME activities and perceived opportunities at work for keeping up-to-date with medical and professional developments would be correlated negatively with job stress and burnout, and positively with job satisfaction. METHOD 309 primary care physicians (183 family physicians and 126 paediatricians) employed in health maintenance organizations in Israel responded to a mailed questionnaire. The independent variables were the extent of engagement in CME activities and perceived opportunities at work for professional updating. The dependent variables were job stress, burnout and job satisfaction. Multiple regression analyses were employed. RESULTS After controlling for age, sex and professional status, participation in CME activities was associated negatively with job stress and positively with job satisfaction, among family physicians. Among paediatricians, CME was associated negatively with burnout. Perceived opportunities for professional updating were associated negatively with burnout and (marginally) with stress among family physicians, and negatively with stress and positively with satisfaction among paediatricians. A third of the paediatricians and a quarter of the family physicians wanted to increase their involvement in CME. DISCUSSION In this cross-sectional study, causality cannot be established and the CME measures should be refined. However, the results are consistent with the study's hypotheses and suggest that opportunities for CME and professional updating may reduce physicians' job distress and dissatisfaction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physicians need a professional environment that is conducive to efficient and satisfying work. Little has been published about the effect of work structure on the satisfaction that family physicians derive from their work. OBJECTIVES To assess the structure and the positive and negative job components of family physicians in Israel, as well as the effect of these components on their satisfaction with their work. METHODS A questionnaire was sent to a random selection of members of the Israel Society of Family Physicians (n = 225). RESULTS Altogether 183 questionnaires were returned. Specialist family doctors, practice medical directors and salaried doctors were involved in more activities than non-specialist doctors, trainees and self-employed doctors. Overall satisfaction was highest for specialists and lowest for non-specialists. Work overload, insufficient resources and abundant paperwork were most frequently cited as negative work components. The opportunity to utilize medical knowledge, challenging work and work variety scored highest as positive components. CONCLUSIONS The more professionally active physicians were also the more satisfied. Clinical work and teaching provided the most satisfaction, while administrative work and lack of time were the main causes of dissatisfaction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined whether burnout at work is associated with leukocyte adhesiveness/aggregation (LAA), a phenomenon known to be affected by stress. METHODS The LAA levels of 179 employees (68 men and 111 women) of Tel Aviv University were determined when the employees underwent their annual routine medical checkup. Blood pressure and toxic chemical exposure were also measured, and background data were retrieved from medical records. Information on burnout and somatic complaints (known to be a general marker of stress) was collected through a self-report questionnaire. RESULTS Total burnout and each of its subcomponents, emotional exhaustion, chronic fatigue, and cognitive weariness, was significantly associated with LAA levels, even after controlling for age, sex, and educational level. Burnout and somatic complaints intercorrelated positively, but somatic complaints were not significantly associated with LAA levels before or after controlling for the above possible confounders. CONCLUSIONS Burnout was positively associated with LAA levels. This finding is consistent with the growing evidence of the negative impact of burnout on physical health. The lack of an association between somatic complaints and LAA levels reinforces the claim that burnout and stress are two different concepts.

Abstract
The invariant properties of human cortical neurons cannot be studied directly by fMRI due to its limited spatial resolution. Here, we circumvented this limitation by using fMR adaptation, namely, reduction of the fMR signal due to repeated presentation of identical images. Object-selective regions (lateral occipital complex [LOC]) showed a monotonic signal decrease as repetition frequency increased. The invariant properties of fMR adaptation were studied by presenting the same object in different viewing conditions. LOC exhibited stronger fMR adaptation to changes in size and position (more invariance) compared to illumination and viewpoint. The effect revealed two putative subdivisions within LOC: caudal-dorsal (LO), which exhibited substantial recovery from adaptation under all transformations, and posterior fusiform (PF/LOa), which displayed stronger adaptation. This study demonstrates the utility of fMR adaptation for revealing functional characteristics of neurons in fMRI studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a paucity of publications on occupational health as part of the educational curricula in high schools. We investigated the extent to which a new occupational health education program for 11th graders succeeded in achieving changes in their knowledge and attitudes. METHODS Six classrooms were randomly assigned to either 96 participating students or to a control group (n = 100) that did not participate. Data on knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs were collected before and 4 months after completion of the course by means of an anonymous self-reported questionnaire. One point was assigned to each answer that was either correct or in the desired direction. Scoring was measured by adding up the points and then converting the total into a scale of 100. RESULTS The experimental group had a statistically higher mean score (from 24.56 to 80.74) after completing the course. The control group had low scores at both time 1 (20.15) and time 2 (17.00). At least 50% more students of the experimental group gave correct answers after the course, while there was no such change in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that occupational health learning can occur in the secondary school setting and confirm the program's effectiveness in achieving desired changes in the immediate outcome of knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs in different areas of occupational health. The subject of occupational health is a topic with relevance to larger educational objectives and policies. In many countries all over the world as well as in Israel, this curriculum can potentially be integrated into the body of the current instruction of "Life Abilities," which are courses that cover topics that prepare the youngsters for adult lifestyles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To clarify whether somatic complaints in healthy normotensive men are associated with differential 24-hour blood pressure and heart rate measures. METHOD Twenty-four-hour ambulatory systolic and diastolic blood pressure was monitored in 114 healthy normotensive men, aged 28 to 63 years, engaged in similar physical work. Means were calculated for each hour, for the whole 24-hour period, and for daytime, nighttime, and work time. Subjects were interviewed about somatic complaints, demographic data, and health habits, and body mass index was measured. RESULTS After controlling for possible confounders, a positive association was found between the somatic complaint score and 24-hour, diurnal, and work-time systolic blood pressure (p = .014, p = .007, and p = .008, respectively). The association with casual systolic blood pressure was of borderline significance (p = .089). There was a positive trend, which did not reach statistical significance, in the relationship between somatic complaint score and all measures of diastolic blood pressure. Diurnal, 24-hour, and work-time heart rates were highest in the subjects with the highest somatic scores (p < .01 for all trends). CONCLUSIONS In healthy normotensive men, somatic complaints are associated with an increased cardiovascular load. The effects of this increase on long-term cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are uncertain and warrant additional study.

Abstract
The extent to which primary visual cues such as motion or luminance are segregated in different cortical areas is a subject of controversy. To address this issue, we examined cortical activation in the human occipital lobe using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while subjects performed a fixed visual task, object recognition, using three different primary visual cues: motion, texture, or luminance contrast. In the first experiment, a region located on the lateral aspect of the occipital lobe (LO complex) was preferentially activated in all 11 subjects both by luminance and motion-defined object silhouettes compared to full-field moving and stationary noise (ratios, 2.00+/-0.19 and 1.86+/-0.65, respectively). In the second experiment, all subjects showed enhanced activation in the LO complex to objects defined both by luminance and texture contrast compared to full-field texture patterns (ratios, 1.43+/-0.08 and 1.32+/-0.08, respectively). An additional smaller dorsal focus that exhibited convergence of object-related cues appeared to correspond to area V3a or a region slightly anterior to it. These results show convergence of visual cues in LO and provide strong evidence for its role in object processing.

Abstract
Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in combined functional selectivity and retinotopic mapping tests to reveal object-related visual areas in the human occipital lobe. Subjects were tested with right, left, up, or down hemivisual field stimuli which were composed of images of natural objects (faces, animals, man-made objects) or highly scrambled (1,024 elements) versions of the same images. In a similar fashion, the horizontal and vertical meridians were mapped to define the borders of these areas. Concurrently, the same cortical sites were tested for their sensitivity to image-scrambling by varying the number of scrambled picture fragments (from 16-1,024) while controlling for the Fourier power spectrum of the pictures and their order of presentation. Our results reveal a stagewise decrease in retinotopy and an increase in sensitivity to image-scrambling. Three main distinct foci were found in the human visual object recognition pathway (Ungerleider and Haxby [1994]: Curr Opin Neurobiol 4:157-165): 1) Retinotopic primary areas V1-3 did not exhibit significant reduction in activation to scrambled images. 2) Areas V4v (Sereno et al., [1995]: Science 268:889-893) and V3A (De Yoe et al., [1996]: Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 93:2382-2386; Tootell et al., [1997]: J Neurosci 71:7060-7078) manifested both retinotopy and decreased activation to highly scrambled images. 3) The essentially nonretinotopic lateral occipital complex (LO) (Malach et al., [1995]: Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 92:8135-8139; Tootell et al., [1996]: Trends Neurosci 19:481-489) exhibited the highest sensitivity to image scrambling, and appears to be homologous to macaque the infero-temporal (IT) cortex (Tanaka [1996]: Curr Opin Neurobiol 523-529). Breaking the images into 64, 256, or 1,024 randomly scrambled blocks reduced activation in LO voxels. However, many LO voxels remained significantly activated by mildly scrambled images (16 blocks). These results suggest the existence of object-fragment representation in LO.

Abstract
Pediatric oncology nursing is associated with highly stressful and emotional situations. This article describes and discusses major sources of occupational stress among a group of nurses participating in a stress management group. The stress sources for these nurses were preoccupation with death and dying, the professional image of the oncology nurse, the nurse as fighter in the war against disease and death, the nurses' perceived isolation from the medical staff, the nurses' perceived inferior professional status compared with that of physicians, emotional overinvolvement with patients and families, suppression of anger, and difficulties in balancing work and home demands. The following factors are suggested as major contributors to the nurses' stress and burnout: increased tendency for irrational-dysfunctional thinking styles (mainly "demandingness" and "awfulizing"), diffuse boundaries between nurses and patients, low professional self-efficacy, and wide prevalence of military metaphors.

Abstract
This study concerns psychosocial factors among Israeli occupational physicians. Eighty-one participants (specialists, residents, and general practitioners) responded anonymously to questionnaires assessing activities demanded by the job, satisfaction from these activities, negative and positive job characteristics, job involvement, and global job satisfaction. There was little overlap between the most frequent activities (fitness for work assessments, statutory health surveillance examinations, and administrative tasks) and the activities the physicians enjoyed most (professional consultations and participation in continuing medical education (CME) activities, fitness for work assessments, and scheduled workplace visits). The most powerful predictors of job satisfaction were job involvement and satisfaction with job activities. Job involvement was related to job characteristics. The findings provide various insights for promoting job involvement and satisfaction, such as improving communication, social support, and feedback within the occupational health system and finding ways to increase quality.

Abstract
There is evidence of a link between stressful life events and risk of cardiovascular disease, but the pathway has not been fully explored. The present study of 1859 employed men tested the association between reported intensity of life events and blood pressure and serum lipid levels, risk behaviors, and psychological distress symptoms. The findings revealed a striking disparity in the outcomes. Life events were negatively associated with systolic (p = 0.001) and diastolic (p = 0.038) blood pressure, triglycerides (p = 0.011), and uric acid (p = 0.05), even after controlling for job strain and other possible confounders. In contrast, life events were positively associated with somatic complaints (p < 0.0001), anxiety (p < 0.0001), irritability (p < 0.0001), and depression (p < 0.0001). In addition there was a linear trend between intensity level of life events and low exercise (p = 0.006), smoking (p = 0.007), and alcoholic intake (p = 0.035). The possibility that the above disparity is a product of powerful biases, such as repressive coping and negative affectivity disposition, is discussed.

Abstract
The role of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in pancreatic cancer diagnosis and its treatment were assessed in three models of pancreatic neoplasms. Perfused MIA PaCa-2 human pancreatic cancer cells, s.c. implanted pancreatic tumors in hamsters, and pancreatic tumors induced in situ in rats by direct application of the carcinogen 7,12-dimethyl benzanthracene, were studied by phosphorous ((31)P), sodium ((23)Na), and proton ((1)H) MRS. (31)P spectra of pancreatic cancer were qualitatively similar to those of intact organs. There were, however, variations in peak intensities and ratios. Phosphomonoester signals were prominent in both normal pancreases and tumors, but their levels depended on the proliferation rate and on environmental conditions. Thus, the phosphomonoester:beta-nucleoside triphosphate ratio was 1.15 +/- 0.32 in 90% confluency and 1.31 +/- 0.43 in 70% confluency, and this ratio increased upon lowering the perfusion rate. Total (intra- and extracellular) sodium concentrations, measured in the solid tumors, were 39-40 micromol/g wet weight in normal pancreases. Contrary to a previous hypothesis that malignant transformation is associated with increased sodium content, our (23)Na MRS data showed that there were no significant differences between pancreatic tumors and intact organs. Proton spectra of perchloric acid extracts revealed several differences between tumors and control pancreases. The principal findings were elevated levels of the amino acid taurine, from 1.17 +/- 0.39 micromol/g wet weight in healthy pancreases, to 2.79 +/- 0.71 micromol/g wet weight in pancreatic carcinoma in rats, and lactate levels that increased from 0.92 +/- 0.2 to 6.19 +/- 1.93 micromol/g wet weight, respectively. On the other hand, creatine and glutamate were higher in the normal pancreases. Pancreatic cancer is usually resistant to chemotherapy, and we evaluated the effects of the metabolic inhibitors 2-deoxyglucose and lonidamine on the human pancreatic cancer cells by MRS and cytotoxicity studies. The IC50 of Adriamycin and 2-deoxyglucose were 1.49 +/- 0.18 x 10(6) and 136 +/- 17 microg/ml, respectively. These results were similar to data obtained previously in multidrug-resistant human breast cancer cells, which were highly resistant (33-fold) to Adriamycin but were more susceptible (9-fold) to 2-deoxyglucose than their parental cells.
