Abstract
Gram-positive bacteria, in particular Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), are the leading bacterial cause of death in high-income countries and can cause invasive infections at various body sites. These infections are associated with prolonged hospital stays, a large economic burden, considerable treatment failure, and high mortality rates. So far, there is only limited knowledge about the specific locations where S. aureus resides in the human body during various infections. Hence, the visualization of S. aureus holds significant importance in microbiological research. Herein, we report the development and validation of a far-red fluorescent probe to detect Gram-positive bacteria, with a focus on staphylococci, in human biopsies from deep-seated infections. This probe displays strong fluorescence and low background in human tissues, outperforming current tools for S. aureus detection. Several applications are demonstrated, including fixed- and live-cell imaging, flow cytometry, and super-resolution bacterial imaging.

Abstract
Agricultural areas exhibiting numerous abiotic stressors, such as elevated water stress, temperatures, and salinity, have grown as a result of climate change. As such, abiotic stresses are some of the most pressing issues in contemporary agricultural production. Understanding plant responses to abiotic stressors is important for global food security, climate change adaptation, and improving crop resilience for sustainable agriculture, Over the decades, explorations have been made concerning plant tolerance to these environmental stresses. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and their phytohormones are some of the players involved in developing resistance to abiotic stress in plants. Several studies have investigated the part of phytohormones in the ability of plants to withstand and adapt to non-living environmental factors, but very few have focused on rhizobacterial hormonal signaling and crosstalk that mediate abiotic stress tolerance in plants. The main objective of this review is to evaluate the functions of PGPR phytohormones in plant abiotic stress tolerance and outline the current research on rhizobacterial hormonal communication and crosstalk that govern plant abiotic stress responses. The review also includes the gene networks and regulation under diverse abiotic stressors. The review is important for understanding plant responses to abiotic stresses using PGPR phytohormones and hormonal signaling. It is envisaged that PGPR offer a useful approach to increasing plant tolerance to various abiotic stresses. However, further studies can reveal the unclear patterns of hormonal interactions between plants and rhizobacteria that mediate abiotic stress tolerance.

Abstract
Excited-state spectroscopy from the first experiment at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is reported. A 24(2)-μs isomer was observed with the FRIB Decay Station initiator (FDSi) through a cascade of 224- and 401-keV γ rays in coincidence with ^{32}Na nuclei. This is the only known microsecond isomer (1 μs≤T_{1/2}<1 ms) in the region. This nucleus is at the heart of the N=20 island of shape inversion and is at the crossroads of the spherical shell-model, deformed shell-model, and ab initio theories. It can be represented as the coupling of a proton hole and neutron particle to ^{32}Mg, ^{32}Mg+π^{-1}+ν^{+1}. This odd-odd coupling and isomer formation provides a sensitive measure of the underlying shape degrees of freedom of ^{32}Mg, where the onset of spherical-to-deformed shape inversion begins with a low-lying deformed 2^{+} state at 885 keV and a low-lying shape-coexisting 0_{2}^{+} state at 1058 keV. We suggest two possible explanations for the 625-keV isomer in ^{32}Na: a 6^{-} spherical shape isomer that decays by E2 or a 0^{+} deformed spin isomer that decays by M2. The present results and calculations are most consistent with the latter, indicating that the low-lying states are dominated by deformation.

Abstract
New half-lives for exotic isotopes approaching the neutron drip-line in the vicinity of N∼28 for Z=12-15 were measured at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) with the FRIB decay station initiator. The first experimental results are compared to the latest quasiparticle random phase approximation and shell-model calculations. Overall, the measured half-lives are consistent with the available theoretical descriptions and suggest a well-developed region of deformation below ^{48}Ca in the N=28 isotones. The erosion of the Z=14 subshell closure in Si is experimentally confirmed at N=28, and a reduction in the ^{38}Mg half-life is observed as compared with its isotopic neighbors, which does not seem to be predicted well based on the decay energy and deformation trends. This highlights the need for both additional data in this very exotic region, and for more advanced theoretical efforts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine risk-reducing early salpingectomy and delayed oophorectomy (RRESDO) acceptability and effect of surgical prevention on menopausal sequelae/satisfaction/regret in women at increased ovarian cancer (OC) risk. DESIGN Multicentre, cohort, questionnaire study (IRSCTN:12310993). SETTING United Kingdom (UK). POPULATION UK women without OC ≥18 years, at increased OC risk, with/without previous RRSO, ascertained through specialist familial cancer/genetic clinics and BRCA support groups. METHODS Participants completed a 39-item questionnaire. Baseline characteristics were described using descriptive statistics. Logistic/linear regression models analysed the impact of variables on RRESDO acceptability and health outcomes. MAIN OUTCOMES RRESDO acceptability, menopausal sequelae, satisfaction/regret. RESULTS In all, 346 of 683 participants underwent risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO). Of premenopausal women who had not undergone RRSO, 69.1% (181/262) found it acceptable to participate in a research study offering RRESDO. Premenopausal women concerned about sexual dysfunction were more likely to find RRESDO acceptable (odds ratio [OR] = 2.9, 95% CI 1.2-7.7, P = 0.025). Women experiencing sexual dysfunction after premenopausal RRSO were more likely to find RRESDO acceptable in retrospect (OR = 5.3, 95% CI 1.2-27.5, P < 0.031). In all, 88.8% (143/161) premenopausal and 95.2% (80/84) postmenopausal women who underwent RRSO, respectively, were satisfied with their decision, whereas 9.4% (15/160) premenopausal and 1.2% (1/81) postmenopausal women who underwent RRSO regretted their decision. HRT uptake in premenopausal individuals without breast cancer (BC) was 74.1% (80/108). HRT use did not significantly affect satisfaction/regret levels but did reduce symptoms of vaginal dryness (OR = 0.4, 95% CI 0.2-0.9, P = 0.025). CONCLUSION Data show high RRESDO acceptability, particularly in women concerned about sexual dysfunction. Although RRSO satisfaction remains high, regret rates are much higher for premenopausal women than for postmenopausal women. HRT use following premenopausal RRSO does not increase satisfaction but does reduce vaginal dryness. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT RRESDO has high acceptability among premenopausal women at increased ovarian cancer risk, particularly those concerned about sexual dysfunction.

Abstract
The synergy between the genetic potential and the nutrient intake determines the growth performance of meat-type chicken and nutrigenomics approach helps us understand the response of candidate genes of growth in chicken to dietary manipulations. The current study aimed to assess the growth performance and expression of hepatic growth related genes in the naked neck broiler chicken in response to different dietary energy and protein levels with a hypothesis that high plane of nutrition enhances both of these positively. The results revealed that birds have shown significantly better growth performance under high protein (HP) and high energy (HE) dietary regime. The expression profiles of the genes studied revealed upregulation of IGF-1, IGF-2, and GH under dietary HP and HE regime relative to other protein and energy levels with greater upregulation at 3rd week than the 1st and 5th week of age of birds. The IGFR and GHR mRNA expression was significantly higher under HP and HE dietary regimen with an increasing and decreasing trend from 1st to 5th week of age, respectively. A consistent and significant downregulation of IGFBP-2 was observed under HP and HE regime throughout the feeding trial. The myostatin expression was higher at 3rd week of age followed by 1st week expression. The HP and HE as well as LP (Low protein) and HE diet resulted in significant upregulation of myostatin gene expression in liver. In support to the set hypothesis of this study the high protein and high energy diet resulted in better growth performance of broiler chickens with corresponding upregulation of IGF-1, IGF-2, IGFR, GH, GHR, and Myostatin gene expression and downregulation of IGFBP-2 in liver.

Abstract
Two generations of phosphoric dendrimers with piperidine functional groups were synthesized for use in biology and medicine. Neutral samples are soluble in organic solvents but after protonation these dendrimers become water soluble and can be used for biological experiments. The FTIR and FT Raman spectra of two generations of dendrimers Gi constructed from the cyclotriphosphazene core, repeating units OC6H4CHNN(CH3)P(S)< and aminoethylpiperidine end groups NH(CH2)2C5NH11 were recorded. The study of the IR spectra shows that the NH groups form hydrogen bonds. The calculation of the molecular structure and vibrational spectra of the first generation dendrimer was performed by the method of DFT. This molecule has flat, repeating units and a plane of symmetry passing through the core. The calculation of the distribution of potential energy made it possible to classify the bands in the experimental spectra of dendrimers. Amine groups are manifested in the form of a band of NH stretching vibrations at 3389 cm-1 in the IR spectrum of G1. NH+ stretching bands located at 2646 and 2540 cm-1 in the IR spectrum of G2. The stretching vibrations of NH+ groups are noticeably shifted to low frequencies due to the formation of a hydrogen bond with the chlorine atom. The line at 1575 cm-1 in the Raman spectrum of G1 is characteristic for repeating units.

Abstract
Cardiomyopathy and associated heart failure continues to be one of the most severe complications that threaten a large population. Curcumin, one of the three curcuminoids of the spice turmeric, is very well known for a multitude of health benefits and functions. Norepinephrine (NE), a catecholamine and also a stress hormone may cause the cardiomyocytes to develop increased sensitivity to death with its increasing concentrations. In this study, we investigated the cardioprotective effect of curcumin in NE-induced cardiac apoptosis using several fluorescent and nonfluorescent microscopic techniques like DAPI, PI, Giemsa, PicroSirius and TUNEL. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of curcumin in preventing the occurrence of features underlying apoptosis such as nuclear disruption, chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation and alterations in mitochondrial membrane permeability. Our results show that curcumin protects the cardiomyocytes against apoptosis significantly and also helps them to revert to their normal physiological state. Hence, we propose that curcumin has the potential to act as a therapeutic agent for the attenuation of NE-induced cardiac cell death and modulation of apoptosis in H9c2 cardiomyocytes.

Abstract
Bioactive novel polypeptide of Anurans skin has a wide range of antimicrobial properties against the infection and tumour cell. Macrophages are known to produce the Nitric oxide (NO) by a variety of cells upon activation. NO produced by the activated macrophages an important mediator for antimicrobial and tumoricidal activity. In-vitro macrophage exposed with medium alone, containing LPS, containing polypepeptides and LPS + polypeptides for 24 h showed enhanced production of NO with respect to control and LPS treated and significant increase in NO production in LPS + polypeptide. Western blot and PCR analysis also showed that increased production of protein expression and mRNA expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). These findings suggest that novel polypeptides are potent activating agent for enhanced production of NO through activation of iNOS gene.

Abstract
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) arises from the interplay of spin-orbit interactions and ferromagnetic order and is a potentially useful probe of electron spin polarization, especially in nanoscale systems where direct measurement is not feasible. While AHE is rather well-understood in metallic ferromagnets, much less is known about the relevance of different physical mechanisms governing AHE in insulators. As ferromagnetic insulators, but not metals, lend themselves to gate-control of electron spin polarization, understanding AHE in the insulating state is valuable from the point of view of spintronic applications. Among the mechanisms proposed in the literature for AHE in insulators, the one related to a geometric (Berry) phase effect has been elusive in past studies. The recent discovery of quantized AHE in magnetically doped topological insulators - essentially a Berry phase effect - provides strong additional motivation to undertake more careful search for geometric phase effects in AHE in the magnetic semiconductors. Here we report our experiments on the temperature and magnetic field dependences of AHE in insulating, strongly-disordered two-dimensional Mn delta-doped semiconductor heterostructures in the hopping regime. In particular, it is shown that at sufficiently low temperatures, the mechanism of AHE related to the Berry phase is favoured.

Abstract
Background Head and neck paragangliomas are rare tumours and can arise as a part of inherited syndromes. Their association with thymic tumour is not well known. Case description This report describes a female patient who presented with right sided neck paragangliomas. The histology of the tumour was consistent with paraganlioma. Few years later her MRI scan of the chest revealed presence of an anterior mediastinal mass that corresponded to the location of the thymus. Review of her previous scans showed that the mass was present all along and had gradually increased in size. Patient developed symptoms including fatigue, dyspnoea, migratory polyarthritis, Raynaud’s phenomenon and erythema nodosum. She had sternotomy and excision of mediastinal mass. The histology was consistent with cortical thymoma (WHO type B2) and she had radiotherapy. After treatment her constitutional symptoms improved. Her paraganglioma susceptibility genes are negative. Discussion and evaluation To our knowledge this is only the second case report in the literature of coexistence of carotid body tumour and thymoma. The first case reported was bilateral carotid body tumour, thyroid gland adenoma and thymoma. This case also highlights the importance of long term surveillance, multidisciplinary management and being aware of associated pathologies in patients with isolated paraganglioma.

Abstract
Fungal ball (mycetoma/aspergilloma) is a saprophytic fungal infection that colonizes pre-existing lung cavities. Reported literature suggests its development in cystic lesions/cavitation associated with tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, bronchiectasis, lung abscess, and cavitating neoplasm to name a few. Coexistence of aspergilloma with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has not been reported in literature so far, to the best of our knowledge. We hereby report the case of a 55-year-old female with IPF having fungal ball.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Ultrasound (US) is non-invasive and cost-effective for screening abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) but there is no universally accepted method to measure the aortic diameter. This study evaluates the accuracy, reproducibility, and repeatability of three methods: inner-to-inner (ITI), leading-to-leading edge (LTL), and outer-to-outer (OTO). The secondary objective of this study was to determine whether aneurysm size or grade of operator had any effect on either intra- or inter-observer variability. METHODS Fifty static US images were measured by six assessors (2 vascular radiologists, 2 interventional radiology trainees, and 2 sonographers) on two separate occasions 6 weeks apart. Repeatability and reproducibility were calculated and compared with computed tomography (CT) as the gold standard. RESULTS All three methods have high repeatability and reproducibility when static images are used. The inter-observer reproducibility coefficients between assessors were 0.48 cm, 0.35 cm, and 0.34 cm for ITI, LTL and OTO, respectively. The intra-observer repeatability coefficients between assessors were 0.30 cm, 0.20 cm, and 0.19 cm for ITI, LTL and OTO, respectively. The mean difference between CT and OTO, LTL, and ITI was 1 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm, respectively (all underestimations) (p < .0001). CONCLUSIONS US consistently underestimates aortic size when compared with CT, with ITI demonstrating the greatest underestimation (on average 5 mm). In the UK, this underestimation by the NHS Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening programme reduces the sensitivity of the screening test and may impact on the way in which vascular specialists interpret the findings of the screening programme.

Abstract
Dendritic cells (DC) play a pivotal role in regulating immunity, establishing immunologically privileged tissue microenvironments and maintaining homoeostasis. It is becoming increasingly clear that one key mechanism that mediates many DC functions is production of the immunomodulatory enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). For pathogens that cause chronic infection, exploitation of host DCs is a solution to establish and persist within a host. Leishmania parasites cause a range of clinical manifestations, all involving chronic infection, and are proficient at avoiding immune responses. We demonstrate here that infection of human myeloid-derived DC with L. major and L. donovani induces IDO expression using a mechanism that involves autocrine or paracrine stimulation with a DC-secreted factor. Leishmania-induced IDO suppresses allogeneic and tetanus toxoid-specific lymphocyte proliferation, an inhibition that is reversed with the IDO inhibitor, 1-methyl tryptophan (1-MT). Furthermore, IDO expression by human DC does not require live Leishmania infection, as parasite lysates also up-regulate IDO mRNA production. Our data suggest that one mechanism Leishmania parasites utilize to circumvent immune clearance may be to promote the induction of IDO among host DC within the infection microenvironment.

Abstract
In the present study, the expression profile of luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR) was investigated in the ovary, magnum and uterus and in hierarchcal follicles (F-1, F-2, F-3 and F-4) of hens subjected to moulting to establish their involvement in moulting and presence in non-gonadal tissues. Fifty-two layers (72 weeks) were subjected to moult for a period of 14 days. Four birds were sacrificed each time on 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 days of moulting, and samples (ovary, magnum, uterus and hierarchal follicles) were collected aseptically for the quantitative study by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The ovary, isthmus, uterus and magnum weight reduced significantly during induced moulting. From the 4 DOM, this reduction was drastic and reached approximately 80% of original weight in the case of ovary, isthmus and magnum and approximately 65% of original weight in the case of uterus on 14 DOM. Ovarian yellow follicles decreased gradually from 1 DOM to 4 DOM, after that no normal yellow follicle was observed in moulted bird. The number of atretic follicles increased gradually during the course of induced moulting, reaching the peak at 5 DOM. The LHR mRNA was detected in non-gonadal tissues like magnum and uterus. The LHR expression was significantly (p < 0.05) down regulated in ovary, magnum and uterus throughout the treatment. These results indicated that LHR may have a role in reproductive tissue regression during moulting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to estimate the general knowledge, attitude and practice of Emergency Contraceptive pills (ECs) among tertiary level students in Trinidad. METHOD A 32-item questionnaire was constructed to assess knowledge, attitudes and practice of EC. There were 76 medical and 160 non-medical students who volunteered to fill-up the questionnaire. This survey was conducted by graduate students under supervision of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, UWI, St Augustine. RESULTS Eighty-four per cent of the students were less than 25 years of age, 64% were Christians and 92% were single. Sixty-three per cent were female and there were more females in the non-medical group than the medical students group but the numbers were not significant. Eighty-one per cent used condoms as the main type of contraception. Only 63% had heard of ECs before and only 9% had heard of ECs from medical sources. Among the factors that related to attitude towards EC, only two factors were significant. Sixty-two per cent of students felt that increased EC use would increase promiscuity (p = 0.013) but 59% also felt that ECs should be made more easily available (p = 0.014). CONCLUSION The general level of their knowledge about ECs was poor. The general attitude of students towards ECs was positive. This study will help policy-makers by providing evidence-based knowledge to promote EC use among university students.

Abstract
We study the effect of coupling magnetic impurities to the honeycomb lattice spin-1/2 Kitaev model in its spin-liquid phase. We show that a spin-S impurity coupled to the Kitaev model is associated with an unusual Kondo effect with an intermediate coupling unstable fixed point Kc∼J/S separating topologically distinct sectors of the Kitaev model. We also show that the massless spinons in the spin-liquid mediate an interaction of the form Siα2Sjβ2/Rij3 between distant impurities unlike the usual dipolar RKKY interaction SiαSjα/Rij3 noted in various 2D impurity problems with a pseudogapped density of states of the spin bath. Furthermore, this long-range interaction is possible only if the impurities (a) couple to more than one neighboring spin on the host lattice and (b) the impurity spin S≠1/2.

Abstract
We study nuclear relaxation in the presence of localized electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas in a disordered delta-doped semiconductor heterostructure and show that this method can reliably probe their magnetic interactions and possible long-range order. In contrast, we argue that transport measurements, the commonly employed tool, may not sometimes distinguish between spatial disorder and long-range order. We illustrate the utility of using the nuclear relaxation method to detect long-range order by analyzing a recent proposal made on the basis of transport measurements, on the spontaneous formation of a two-dimensional Kondo lattice in a 2D electron gas in a heterostructure.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the presence of nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) isoforms (neuronal NOS (nNOS), inducible NOS (iNOS), and endothelial NOS (eNOS)) and the role of NO in the ovary of Heteropneustes fossilis. In one half of the ovary collected during different reproductive stages, NOS isoforms were localized immunohistochemically in paraffin sections whereas the other half was processed for NOS and NO quantification using western blot followed by densitometry and nitrate/nitrite assay respectively. The role of NO on oocyte maturation was studied by examining the effect of NO donor (sodium nitroprusside; SNP) and NOS inhibitor (Nomega-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester) on 17alpha,20beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17alpha,20beta-P)-induced germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) in the cultured oocyte collected during prespawning phase. NOS immunostaining was predominantly localized in previtellogenic follicles, with nNOS detected in the nucleus and cytoplasm of oocytes whereas iNOS and eNOS localized in granulosa, theca cells, and cytoplasm of oocytes. The NOS expression was higher in previtellogenic phase when compared with vitellogenic phase. The nitrate/nitrite concentrations in ovary showed gradual increase from recrudescence (4.9+/-0.19 nM/mg protein) to late previtellogenic phase (7.02+/-0.53 nM/mg protein), but showed a sharp decline during the vitellogenic phase (0.41+/-0.053 nM/mg protein). Serum and ovarian nitrate/nitrite level showed a close association during the reproductive cycle. The results showed an increase in NOS activity and nitrate/nitrite concentrations as the follicle grow suggesting involvement of NO in follicular development. SNP significantly inhibited 17alpha,20beta-P-induced GVBD in fish oocytes. Thus, it is concluded that the fish ovary possesses NOS/NO system and a possibility that NO has a role in follicular development and regulation of oocyte maturation in fish, H. fossilis.

Abstract
Our recent study showing highly recurrent loss of function of DLC1 (deleted in liver cancer 1), a tumor suppressor gene in primary prostate carcinoma (PCA), implicates this gene in the pathogenesis of this disease. To evaluate the response of PCA to oncosuppressive activity of DLC1, we examined now the effects of adenoviral vector for human DLC1 transduction into the DLC1-deficient, androgen-independent (AI) and aggressive human PCA cell lines PC-3 and C4-2-B2. Adenovirus-mediated restoration of DLC1 expression inhibited the proliferation, invasiveness and anchorage-independent growth of PC-3 and C4-2-B2 cells in vitro as well as the tumorigenicity of PC-3 cells in nude mice. It also induced cell-cycle arrest, inhibited the activation of RhoA and the formation of actin stress fibers. DLC1 induced apoptosis in C4-2-B2 cells, whereas it did not elicit such an effect in PC-3 cells. The abundance of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 was greater in PC-3 cells than in C4-2-B2 cells, and PC-3 cells were rendered sensitive to DLC1-induced apoptosis by treatment with the Bcl-2 inhibitor HA14-1. These results suggest that adenovirus-mediated DLC1 transfer, alone or together with other agents, such as inhibitors of Bcl-2 or histone deacetylase, might prove effective in the treatment of aggressive, AI-PCA.

Abstract
Using the Kubo formula approach, we study the effect of electron interaction on thermal transport in the vicinity of a metal-insulator transition, with a granular metal as our model. For small values of dimensionless intergrain tunneling conductance, g<<1, we find that the thermal conductivity surprisingly shows a phononlike algebraic decrease, kappa(T) approximately g2T3/E2c even though the electrical conductivity obeys an Arrhenius law, sigma(T) approximately ge-Ec/T ; therefore the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law is seriously violated. We explicitly show that this violation arises from nonmagnetic bosonic excitations of low energy that transport heat but not charge. At large values of intergrain tunneling, we find it plausible that the WF law weakly deviates from the free-electron theory due to potential fluctuations. Implications for experiment are discussed.

Abstract
Excited states in 20O were populated in the reaction 10Be(14C,alpha) at Florida State University (FSU). Charged particles were detected with a particle telescope consisting of 4 annularly segmented Si surface barrier detectors and gamma radiation was detected with the FSU gamma detector array. Five new states were observed below 6 MeV from the alpha-gamma and alpha-gamma-gamma coincidence data. Shell model calculations suggest that most of the newly observed states are core-excited 1p-1h excitations across the N=Z=8 shell gap. Comparisons between experimental data and calculations for the neutron-rich O and F isotopes imply a steady reduction of the p-sd shell gap as neutrons are added.

Abstract
Sociocultural and behavioral factors are associated with decision to use and the selection of a contraceptive method, continuation of use and reasons for discontinuation of a contraceptive. This paper tries to distinctly outline the determinants of discontinuation of the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD), especially in the Indian context. Data on medical reasons for discontinuation are available through clinical trials. However, sociodemographic studies provide one with a wider spectrum to analyze the factors associated with the discontinuation of IUCDs. Information on service providers can be used to improve the quality of family planning services in the country. In India, a thorough review of birth spacing methods, especially the IUCD, is needed since the surveys show a high rate of discontinuation. The emphasis in this paper is upon compilation of reasons for discontinuation of the IUCD and research thereof. The review of the literature is directed towards giving a new direction to assessment of family planning programs, especially in India where population control is largely dependent upon permanent methods. Delineation of factors is important to improve the family planning program.

Abstract
The development of vaccines to prevent infectious diseases has been one of the most important contributions of biomedical sciences. Increasing understanding in biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular genetics and related fields have provided an opportunity for the development of new generation vaccines that are based on rational design approaches. This is possible because of proper understanding of the microbial-genetics, biochemistry, host-pathogen interaction and recent developments in molecular immunology. Another important improvement made in the quality of vaccine production is the incorporation of immunomodulators or adjuvants with modified delivery vehicles viz liposomes, Iscoms and microspheres apart from alum being used as a gold standard. This article reviews the art of vaccination from Jenner period to present day context highlighting all the developments made at each stage of the vaccine development. Various criteria have been discussed regarding the selection of epitopes that expand B & T cells, its linkage with other accessory cells of the immune system, means to overcome MHC linked immune unresponsiveness, enhanced antigen processing and presentations that specially induce either helper or cytotoxic or mucosal immune responses were critically discussed.

Abstract
In vitro macrophages treated with novel peptides have been shown to develop enhanced tumoricidal activity against tumor target cell (P815), though the exact mechanism is not known. In the present study, we have investigated the mechanism involved in the tumor cell cytotoxicity mediated by novel peptides treated macrophage and involvement of possible effectors molecule. Peritoneal exudated macrophages treated with LPS, peptides, and LPS plus peptides and when cocultured with tumor cell P815 caused tumor cell death by induction of apoptosis. The results of our experiment reveal a specific pattern of intranucleosomal DNA fragmentation detected by agarose gel electrophoresis and also with microscopic examination of the cells revealed nuclear alteration characteristic of apoptosis. Viability studies showed that most of the cells undergoing apoptosis were found to be non-viable even after 24 h coculture. Macrophage induced apoptosis in tumor target cells even in the absence of cell to cell contact through diffusible effectors molecule. The study thus shows that the novel peptide treated macrophage can kill tumor cell P815 by extracellular release of effectors molecule NO (nitric oxide) that act by inducing apoptosis in a target cell-specific manner.

Abstract
A rare case of malignant nasal paraganglioma is described. A 30 year old female patient presented with a one year history of bilateralnasal obstruction, nasal deformity and recurrent epistaxis. CT scan demonstrated an enhancing mass occupying both nasal cavities, right maxillary antrum and anterior ethmoid sinus. Histopathologic diagnosis was malignant paraganglioma. A total maxillectomy with excision of growth was performed. Post-operative radiotherapy and chemotherapy was given but patient expired before the completion of therapy. Nose being a rare site for paragangliomas, these lesions present a diagnostic challenge to histopathologists and clinicians alike. A review of the four previously described malignant nasal paragangliomas is also presented.

Abstract
When matter is cooled from high temperatures, collective instabilities develop among its constituent particles that lead to new kinds of order. An anomaly in the specific heat is a classic signature of this phenomenon. Usually the associated order is easily identified, but sometimes its nature remains elusive. The heavy fermion metal URu(2)Si(2) is one such example, where the order responsible for the sharp specific heat anomaly at T(0) = 17 K has remained unidentified despite more than seventeen years of effort. In URu(2)Si(2), the coexistence of large electron electron repulsion and antiferromagnetic fluctuations leads to an almost incompressible heavy electron fluid, where anisotropically paired quasiparticle states are energetically favoured. Here we develop a proposal for the nature of the hidden order in URu(2)Si(2). We show that incommensurate orbital antiferromagnetism, associated with circulating currents between the uranium ions, can account for the local fields and entropy loss observed at the 17 K transition. We make detailed predictions for the outcome of neutron scattering measurements based on this proposal, so that it can be tested experimentally.

Abstract
Ammonium cationisation has been used for taxoid profiling of partially purified methanolic extracts of needles of Taxus wallichiana growing in different regions of the Himalayas (Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, UP Hills, Darjeeling, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh) by electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The MS/MS spectra of the [M + NH4]+ or [M + H]+ ions gave structurally diagnostic fragment ions which revealed information about the taxane skeleton as well as the number and nature of the substituents. The rearranged 11(15-->1)-abeo-taxanes showed a characteristic elimination of the hydroxyisopropyl group with an acetoxy/benzoyloxy group from C-9. The identification of the taxoids was achieved by comparison of the MS/MS spectra with those of authentic taxoids or was based on biogenetic grounds. The results were corroborated by liquid chromatography-MS analysis. Out of the 50 taxoids identified, 21 belonged to the rearranged class. The presence of paclitaxel in the samples from four regions was confirmed: the study also revealed the occurrence of several basic taxoids in these samples. MS/MS profiling by electrospray ionisation was shown to be a fast and reliable technique for the analysis of taxoid samples.

Abstract
A reversed-phase column liquid chromatography method for the analysis of taxol, 10-deacetylbaccatin III, baccatin IV, 1-hydroxybaccatin I, 2-acetoxybrevifoliol, brevifoliol, 2'-deacetoxydecinnamoyltaxinine J and 2'-deacetoxytaxinine J in yew needles has been developed using a Nova-Pak Phenyl column and a binary gradient profile. The various aspects of analysis such as extraction efficiency, detection limits, reproducibility and peak purity were validated using UV-Vis as well as photodiode array detection.
