Abstract
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) occurs both in humans and domestic species. It has a particularly high incidence in pigs, and is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality as well as impaired postnatal growth. A key feature of IUGR is impaired muscle development, resulting in decreased meat quality. Understanding the developmental origins of IUGR, particularly at the molecular level, is important for developing effective strategies to mitigate its economic impact on the pig industry and animal welfare. The aim of this study was to characterise transcriptional profiles in the muscle of growth restricted pig foetuses at different gestational days (GD; gestational length ~ 115 days), focusing on selected genes (related to development, tissue injury and metabolism) that were previously identified as dysregulated in muscle of GD90 fetuses. Muscle samples were collected from the lightest foetus (L) and the sex-matched foetus with weight closest to the litter average (AW) from each of 22 Landrace x Large White litters corresponding to GD45 (n = 6), GD60 (n = 8) or GD90 (n = 8), followed by analyses, using RT-PCR and protein immunohistochemistry, of selected gene targets. Expression of the developmental genes, MYOD, RET and ACTN3 were markedly lower, whereas MSTN expression was higher, in the muscle of L relative to AW littermates beginning on GD45. Levels of all tissue injury-associated transcripts analysed (F5, PLG, KNG1, SELL, CCL16) were increased in L muscle on GD60 and, most prominently, on GD90. Among genes involved in metabolic regulation, KLB was expressed at higher levels in L than AW littermates beginning on GD60, whereas both IGFBP1 and AHSG were higher in L littermates on GD90 but only in males. Furthermore, the expression of genes specifically involved in lipid, hexose sugar or iron metabolism increased or, in the case of UCP3, decreased in L littermates on GD60 (UCP3, APOB, ALDOB) or GD90 (PNPLA3, TF), albeit in the case of ALDOB this only involved females. In conclusion, marked dysregulation of genes with critical roles in development in L foetuses can be observed from GD45, whereas for a majority of transcripts associated with tissue injury and metabolism differences between L and AW foetuses were apparent by GD60 or only at GD90, thus identifying different developmental windows for different types of adaptive responses to IUGR in the muscle of porcine foetuses.

Abstract
We report pump-probe measurements of a hydrogen molecule (H_{2}) in the tunnel junction of a scanning tunneling microscope coupled to ultrashort terahertz (THz) pulses. The coherent oscillation of the THz-induced dc tunneling current at a frequency of ∼0.5 THz fingerprints the absorption by H_{2} as a two-level system (TLS). Two components of the oscillatory signal are observed and point to both photon and field aspects of the THz pulses. A few loosely bound states with similar energies for the upper state of the TLS are evidenced by the coherent revival of oscillatory signal. Furthermore, the comparison of spectroscopic features of H_{2} with different tips provides an understanding of the TLS for H_{2}.

Abstract
Studying the photoinduced changes of materials with atomic-scale spatial resolution can provide a fundamental understanding of light-matter interaction. A long-standing impediment has been the detrimental thermal effects on the stability of the tunneling gap from intensity-modulated laser irradiation of the scanning tunneling microscope junction. Photoinduced DC current transduces photons to an electric current and is widely applied in optoelectronics as switches and signal transmission. Our results revealed the origin of the light-induced DC current and related it to the two-level population dynamics and related nonlinearity in the conductance of a single molecule. Here, we compensated for the near-visible laser-induced thermal effects to demonstrate photoinduced DC current spectroscopy and microscopy and to observe the persistent photoconductivity of a two-level pyrrolidine molecule. The methodology can be generally applied to the coupling of light to scan probes to investigate light-matter interactions at the atomic scale.

Abstract
Epithelial cell apoptosis and compromised gut barrier function are features of inflammatory bowel disease. ADS024 is a single-strain live biotherapeutic product (LBP) of Bacillus velezensis under development for treating ulcerative colitis (UC). The cytoprotective effects of the sterile filtrate of ADS024's secreted products on UC patient-derived colonic tissues, human primary colonic epithelial cells (HPEC), and human colonic epithelial T84 cells were evaluated. ADS024 filtrate significantly inhibited apoptosis and inflammation with reduced Bcl-2 Associated X-protein (BAX) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) mRNA expression in fresh colonic explants from UC patients. Exposure to UC patient-derived serum exosomes (UCSE) induced apoptosis with increased cleaved caspase 3 protein expression in HPECs. ADS024 filtrate diminished the UCSE-mediated apoptosis by inhibiting cleaved caspase 3. TNFα and interferon-gamma (IFNγ) damaged epithelial barrier integrity with reduced transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER). ADS024 filtrate partially attenuated the TEER reduction and restored tight junction protein 1 (TJP1) expression. Oral live ADS024 treatment reduced weight loss, disease activity, colonic mucosal injury, and colonic expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and TNFα in dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-treated mice with colitis. Thus, ADS024 may protect the colonic epithelial barrier in UC via anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and tight-junction protection mechanisms.

Abstract
We report rectification spectroscopy (RS) for single molecules performed with continuous-wave terahertz (CW THz) radiation at the tunneling junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at 8 K. CW THz-RS serves as a new technique in single-molecule vibrational and magnetic excitation spectroscopy besides inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). By quantitatively studying IETS and THz RS, we show that CW THz induces a sinusoidal bias modulation with amplitude linearly dependent on the THz far-field amplitude. Such THz-induced bias modulation amplitude appears to be sensitive to the THz beam alignment but insensitive to variation in the tunneling gap far smaller than the THz wavelength.

Abstract
We report the manipulation of ultrafast quantum coherence of a two-level single hydrogen molecular system by employing static electric field from the sample bias in a femtosecond terahertz scanning tunneling microscope. A H_{2} molecule adsorbed on the polar Cu_{2}N surface develops an electric dipole and exhibits a giant Stark effect. An avoided crossing of the quantum state energy levels is derived from the resonant frequency of the single H_{2} two levels in a double-well potential. The dephasing time of the initial wave packet can also be changed by applying the electric field. The electrical manipulation for different tunneling gaps in three dimensions allows quantification of the surface electrostatic fields at the atomic scale. Our work demonstrated the potential application of molecules as controllable two-level molecular systems.

Abstract
Abstract
Burden of disease analyses measure the healthy years of life lost due to living with and dying prematurely from disease and injury. It is now the global standard for comparable policy-relevant evidence on the impact of disease, injuries, and risks on a population. The Australian Burden of Disease Study (ABDS), undertaken by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, uses Australian-specific data and methods (based on the Global Burden of Disease Study, adjusted to suit the Australian context) to quantify disease burden for Australia. Despite the high quality of deaths registration data in Australia, in burden of disease analyses not all coded causes of death are considered appropriate or valid to estimate years of life lost (YLL). Therefore, these ‘ill-defined deaths’ are redistributed to one or more diseases on the ABDS disease list according to a more probable underlying cause of death. In the latest ABDS, almost 1 in 10 deaths in 2018 was an ill-defined death. Most of these were redistributed to other diseases using one of three methods developed for the Study:
1) direct evidence on more plausible causes of death from data linkage studies or other sources
2) redistribution algorithms based on the distribution of underlying causes of death where the ill-defined cause was recorded as an associated cause of death
3) reassignment of deaths across a specified range of target diseases according to patterns of causes of death observed in the mortality data for the ABDS disease list.
Expert advice was also received on the redistribution of deaths from septicaemia and deaths coded to ICD-10 code X59 Exposure to unspecified factor. Overall, 8.5% of the years of life lost for Australia in 2018 came from ill-defined deaths. These deaths generally followed age-specific all-cause mortality patterns. It is important to consider methods and target diseases when redistributing ill-defined deaths to appropriately quantify their contribution to disease-specific burden.

Abstract
The phenomenon of rectification describes the emergence of a DC current from the application of an oscillating voltage. Although the origin of this effect has been associated with the nonlinearity in the current-voltage I(V) relation, a rigorous understanding of the microscopic mechanisms for this phenomenon remains challenging. Here, we show the close connection between rectification and inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and microscopy for single molecules with a scanning tunneling microscope. While both techniques are based on nonlinear features in the I(V) curve, comprehensive line shape analyses reveal notable differences that highlight the two complementary techniques of nonlinear conductivity spectromicroscopy for probing nanoscale systems.

Abstract
We sought to compare the clinical presentation and prognosis of patients with lung cancer and confirmed COVID-19 infection to those with negative RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 results. We included patients with confirmed lung cancer and suspected COVID-19 who presented to the emergency department. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality and secondary outcomes included admission to intensive care unit (ICU) or mechanical ventilation. We analyzed the characteristics according to RT-PCR results and primary outcome. We constructed a logistic regression for each RT-PCR result group to find potential predictors of the primary outcome. Among 110 individuals with confirmed lung cancer (65±9 years, 51% male), 38 patients had positive RT-PCR and 72 patients had negative RT-PCR. There was no difference between groups for any clinical characteristic or comorbidities though individuals with confirmed COVID-19 had higher functionality in the ECOG scale. Leucocytes and lymphocytes were lower in individuals with positive tests. The primary outcome occurred in 58 (53%) individuals, 37 (34%) were admitted to the ICU, and 29 (26%) required mechanical ventilation. Although mortality was similar between the two groups, individuals with confirmed COVID-19 were significantly more likely to be admitted to the ICU or receive mechanical ventilation. Only lower lymphocytes and higher CRP were significantly associated with higher mortality. The clinical presentation of COVID-19 in lung cancer is not sufficient to identify higher or lower probability groups among symptomatic individuals, the overall mortality is high irrespective of RT-PCR results, and lymphopenia on admission was associated with the diagnosis and prognosis for COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS More than half of Crohn's disease patients develop intestinal fibrosis-induced intestinal strictures. Elafin is a human protease inhibitor that is down-regulated in the stricturing intestine of Crohn's disease patients. We investigated the efficacy of elafin in reversing intestinal fibrosis and elucidated its mechanism of action. METHODS We developed a new method to mimic a stricturing Crohn's disease environment and induce fibrogenesis using stricturing Crohn's disease patient-derived serum exosomes to condition fresh human intestinal tissues and primary stricturing Crohn's disease patient-derived intestinal fibroblasts. Three mouse models of intestinal fibrosis, including SAMP1/YitFc mice, Salmonella-infected mice, and trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-treated mice, were also studied. Elafin-Eudragit FS30D formulation and elafin-overexpressing construct and lentivirus were used. RESULTS Elafin reversed collagen synthesis in human intestinal tissues and fibroblasts pretreated with Crohn's disease patient-derived serum exosomes. Proteome arrays identified cathepsin S as a novel fibroblast-derived pro-fibrogenic protease. Elafin directly suppressed cathepsin S activity to inhibit protease-activated receptor 2 activity and Zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 expression, leading to reduced collagen expression in intestinal fibroblasts. Elafin overexpression reversed ileal fibrosis in SAMP1/YitFc mice, cecal fibrosis in Salmonella-infected mice, and colonic fibrosis in trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-treated mice. Cathepsin S, protease-activated receptor 2 agonist, and zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 overexpression abolished the anti-fibrogenic effect of elafin in fibroblasts and all 3 mouse models of intestinal fibrosis. Oral elafin-Eudragit FS30D treatment abolished colonic fibrosis in trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-treated mice. CONCLUSIONS Elafin suppresses collagen synthesis in intestinal fibroblasts via cathepsin S-dependent protease-activated receptor 2 inhibition and decreases zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 expression. The reduced collagen synthesis leads to the reversal of intestinal fibrosis. Thus, modified elafin may be a therapeutic approach for intestinal fibrosis.

Abstract
The catalytic scission of single chemical bonds has been induced by the nanoscale confinement in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) junction. Individual hydrogen molecules sandwiched between the STM tip and a copper substrate can be dissociated solely by the reciprocating movement of the tip. The reaction rate depends sensitively on the local molecular environment, as exemplified by the effects of a nearby carbon monoxide molecule or a gold adatom. Detailed mechanisms and the nature of the transition states are revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides insights into chemical reactions at the atomic scale induced by localized confinement applied by the STM tip. Furthermore, a single diatomic molecule can act as a molecular catalyst to enhance the reaction rate on a surface.

Abstract
A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) combined with a pump-probe femtosecond terahertz (THz) laser can enable coherence measurements of single molecules. We report THz pump-probe measurements that demonstrate quantum sensing based on a hydrogen (H2) molecule in the cavity created with an STM tip near a surface. Atomic-scale spatial and femtosecond temporal resolutions were obtained from this quantum coherence. The H2 acts as a two-level system, with its coherent superposition exhibiting extreme sensitivity to the applied electric field and the underlying atomic composition of the copper nitride (Cu2N) monolayer islands grown on a Cu(100) surface. We acquired time-resolved images of THz rectification of H2 over Cu2N islands for variable pump-probe delay times to visualize the heterogeneity of the chemical environment at sub-angstrom scale.

Introduction
The pedicled anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap is considered as a suitable option in complex abdominal wall reconstruction. Its use as a reconstructive option is infrequent in the literature, and to date, there has been no systematic review evaluating its long-term outcomes. We report our experience with the pedicled anterolateral thigh flap for abdominal wall reconstruction in high-risk patients.
Method
A prospective database was created for patients with abdominal wall defects treated with pedicled ALT with extended fascia lata flaps between 2014 and 2017. Patient demographics, aetiology, size, location of defect and post-operative results were reviewed. Abdominal defects were classified into the following zones: 1A, upper midline; 1B, lower midline; 2, upper quadrant; 3, lower quadrant. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using PUBMED and EMBASE.
Results
4 patients (mean age 59.5 years, range 50-65 years) underwent reconstruction with pedicled ALT flaps. 3 flaps developed partial necrosis secondary to infection; 1 flap required surgical debridement, and 2 were managed conservatively. There was one flap failure, due to avulsion of the pedicle during inset. At mean follow up of 2.75 years (range 1 to 4 years) 3 patients have clinical bulging or herniation.
Conclusions
Review of the literature demonstrated 52 patients from 17 case series or reports. The overall infection and partial flap loss rates were both 6%. There were no reported flap failures. Our study demonstrates that the pedicled anterolateral thigh flap is an effective flap option for the repair of large defects of the abdominal wall in high-risk patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine the impact of preoperative exposure to intravenous contrast for CT and the risk of developing postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery. METHODS This prospective, multicentre cohort study included adults undergoing gastrointestinal resection, stoma reversal or liver resection. Both elective and emergency procedures were included. Preoperative exposure to intravenous contrast was defined as exposure to contrast administered for the purposes of CT up to 7 days before surgery. The primary endpoint was the rate of AKI within 7 days. Propensity score-matched models were adjusted for patient, disease and operative variables. In a sensitivity analysis, a propensity score-matched model explored the association between preoperative exposure to contrast and AKI in the first 48 h after surgery. RESULTS A total of 5378 patients were included across 173 centres. Overall, 1249 patients (23·2 per cent) received intravenous contrast. The overall rate of AKI within 7 days of surgery was 13·4 per cent (718 of 5378). In the propensity score-matched model, preoperative exposure to contrast was not associated with AKI within 7 days (odds ratio (OR) 0·95, 95 per cent c.i. 0·73 to 1·21; P = 0·669). The sensitivity analysis showed no association between preoperative contrast administration and AKI within 48 h after operation (OR 1·09, 0·84 to 1·41; P = 0·498). CONCLUSION There was no association between preoperative intravenous contrast administered for CT up to 7 days before surgery and postoperative AKI. Risk of contrast-induced nephropathy should not be used as a reason to avoid contrast-enhanced CT.

Abstract
The spin states of magnetic molecules have advantageous attributes as carriers of quantum information. However, spin-vibration coupling in molecules causes a decay of excited spin states and a loss of spin coherence. Here, we detect excitations of spin-vibration states in single nickelocene molecules on Ag(110) with a scanning tunneling microscope. By transferring a nickelocene to the tip, the joint spin-vibration states with an adsorbed nickelocene were measured. Chemical variations in magnetic molecules offer the opportunity to tune spin-vibration coupling for controlling the spin coherence.

Abstract
Magnetic single atoms and molecules are receiving intensifying research focus because of their potential as the smallest possible memory, spintronic, and qubit elements. Scanning probe microscopes used to study these systems have benefited greatly from new techniques that use molecule-functionalized tips to enhance spatial and spectroscopic resolutions and enable new sensing capabilities. We demonstrate a microscopy technique that uses a magnetic molecule, Ni(cyclopentadienyl)2, adsorbed at the apex of a scanning probe tip, to sense exchange interactions with another molecule adsorbed on a Ag(110) surface in a continuously tunable fashion in all three spatial directions. We further used the probe to image contours of exchange interaction strength, revealing angstrom-scale regions where the quantum states of two magnetic molecules strongly mix. Our results pave the way for new nanoscale imaging capabilities based on magnetic single-molecule sensors.

Abstract
Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is a powerful technique used to characterize the vibration and spin states at the single-molecule level. While IETS lacks hard selection rules, historically it has been assumed that vibrational overtones are rarely seen or even absent. Here we provide definitive experimental evidence that the hindered rotation overtone excitation of carbon monoxide molecules adsorbed on Ag(110) can be detected with STM-IETS via isotope substitution. We also demonstrate that the anharmonicity of the overtone excitation can be characterized and compared between adsorption sites and find evidence of anisotropy in the vibrational anharmonicity for CO adsorbed on the [11[over ¯]0] step edge.

Abstract
We report the photoassisted activation of selected C─H bonds in individual molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces within the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope. Photons can couple to the C─H bond activation of specific hydrocarbons through a resonant photoassisted tunneling process. The molecule to be activated can be selected by positioning the tip with subangstrom resolution. Furthermore, structural tomography of the molecule and its dissociation products are imaged at different heights by the inelastic tunneling probe. The demonstration of single bond dissociation induced by resonant photoassisted tunneling electrons implies the attainment of atomic scale spatial resolution for bond-selected photochemistry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient selection for critical care admission must balance patient safety with optimal resource allocation. This study aimed to determine the relationship between critical care admission, and postoperative mortality after abdominal surgery. METHODS This prespecified secondary analysis of a multicentre, prospective, observational study included consecutive patients enrolled in the DISCOVER study from UK and Republic of Ireland undergoing major gastrointestinal and liver surgery between October and December 2014. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality. Multivariate logistic regression was used to explore associations between critical care admission (planned and unplanned) and mortality, and inter-centre variation in critical care admission after emergency laparotomy. RESULTS Of 4529 patients included, 37.8% (n=1713) underwent planned critical care admissions from theatre. Some 3.1% (n=86/2816) admitted to ward-level care subsequently underwent unplanned critical care admission. Overall 30-day mortality was 2.9% (n=133/4519), and the risk-adjusted association between 30-day mortality and critical care admission was higher in unplanned [odds ratio (OR): 8.65, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.51-19.97) than planned admissions (OR: 2.32, 95% CI: 1.43-3.85). Some 26.7% of patients (n=1210/4529) underwent emergency laparotomies. After adjustment, 49.3% (95% CI: 46.8-51.9%, P<0.001) were predicted to have planned critical care admissions, with 7% (n=10/145) of centres outside the 95% CI. CONCLUSIONS After risk adjustment, no 30-day survival benefit was identified for either planned or unplanned postoperative admissions to critical care within this cohort. This likely represents appropriate admission of the highest-risk patients. Planned admissions in selected, intermediate-risk patients may present a strategy to mitigate the risk of unplanned admission. Substantial inter-centre variation exists in planned critical care admissions after emergency laparotomies.

Abstract
The coupling between localized plasmon and molecular orbital in the light emission from a metallic nanocavity has been directly detected and imaged with sub-0.1 nm resolution. The light emission intensity was enhanced when the energy difference between the tunneling electrons and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of an azulene molecule matches the energy of a plasmon mode of the nanocavity defined by the Ag-tip and Ag (110) substrate of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The spatially resolved image of the light emission intensity matches the spatial distribution of the LUMO obtained by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results highlight the near-field coupling of a molecular orbital to the radiative decay of a plasmonic excitation in a confined nanoscale junction.

Abstract
We report single-molecule conformational transitions with joint angstrom-femtosecond resolution by irradiating the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope with femtosecond laser pulses. An isolated pyrrolidine molecule adsorbed on a Cu(001) surface undergoes reversible transitions between two conformational states. The transition rate decays in time and exhibits sinusoidal oscillations with periods of specific molecular vibrations. The dynamics of this transition depends sensitively on the molecular environment, as exemplified by the effects of another molecule in proximity.

Abstract
Lynch syndrome is an autosomal-dominant hereditary cancer syndrome. Mutations in mismatch repair genes, including MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2, are implicated in the pathogenesis of the syndrome through microsatellite instability (MSI) and a rapid adenoma-carcinoma sequence. The primary methodologies for diagnosis include clinical criteria (Amsterdam I/II, Revised Bethesda Guidelines), computational models, and genetic testing (MSI, immunohistochemistry, germline testing). Universal genetic testing of colorectal cancers has gained popularity as a method to identify high-risk individuals and to offer appropriate cancer surveillance, psychological reassurance, and family planning. Management includes short-interval surveillance with colonoscopy in those without colorectal cancer and colectomy for those with cancer. Long-term chemoprevention with aspirin may improve mortality.

Abstract
Intermolecular interactions can induce energy shifts and coupling of molecular vibrations. However, the detection of intermolecular coupled vibrations has not been reported at the single molecule level. Here we detected an intermolecular coupled vibration between two CO molecules, one on the surface and another on the tip within the gap of a subkelvin scanning tunneling microscope, and analyzed the results by density functional calculations. We attribute the evolution of the energy and intensity of this coupled vibration as a function of tip-sample distance to the tilting and orbital alignment of the two CO molecules.

Abstract
The van der Waals interactions are responsible for a large diversity of structures and functions in chemistry, biology, and materials. Discussion of van der Waals interactions has focused on the attractive potential energy that varies as the inverse power of the distance between the two interacting partners. The origin of the attractive force is widely discussed as being due to the correlated fluctuations of electron charges that lead to instantaneous dipole-induced dipole attractions. Here, we use the inelastic tunneling probe to image the potential energy surface associated with the van der Waals interactions of xenon atoms.

Abstract
The vibrational properties of single CO molecules adsorbed on nanosized Ag, Au, and Pd islands on a NiAl(110) surface were studied with a scanning tunneling microscope. The sensitivity of single molecule vibrational spectroscopy to aspects of the local environment is demonstrated by comparative studies of CO-metal bond vibrations at island terrace and island edge sites. Vibrational spectra of single CO molecules adsorbed on Ag, Au, and Pd island terraces showed peaks at 27, 32, and 44 meV, respectively, which are assigned to the hindered rotational mode. CO molecules on Au and Pd island edges, on the other hand, showed blue-shifted hindered rotational modes at 34 and 46 meV, respectively. On Au islands, CO molecules showed a strong preference for adsorption on edges, while no such preference was observed on Pd.

Abstract
The coupling of tunneling electrons with the tip-nanocluster-substrate junction plasmon was investigated by monitoring light emission in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Gold atoms were evaporated onto the ∼5 Å thick Al2O3 thin film grown on the NiAl (110) surface where they formed nanoclusters 3-7 nm wide. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) of these nanoclusters revealed quantum-confined electronic states. Spatially resolved photon imaging showed localized emission hot spots. Size dependent study and light emission from nanocluster dimers further support the viewpoint that coupling of tunneling electrons to the junction plasmon is the main radiative mechanism. These results showed the potential of the STM to reveal the electronic and optical properties of nanoscale metallic systems in the confined geometry of the tunnel junction.

Abstract
The combination of a sub-Kelvin scanning tunneling microscope and density functional calculations incorporating van der Waals (vdW) corrections has been used successfully to probe the adsorption structure and low-frequency vibrational modes of single benzene molecules on Ag(110). The inclusion of optimized vdW functionals and improved C6-based vdW dispersion schemes in density functional theory is crucial for obtaining the correct adsorption structure and low-energy vibrational modes. These results demonstrate the emerging capability to quantitatively probe the van der Waals interactions between a physisorbed molecule and an inert substrate.

Abstract
Single molecule vibrational spectroscopy and microscopy was demonstrated in 1998 by inelastic electron tunneling with the scanning tunneling microscope. To date, the discussion of its application has mainly focused on the spatial resolution and the spectral energy and intensity. Here we report on the vibrational line shape for a single carbon monoxide molecule that qualitatively exhibits inversion symmetry when it is transferred from the surface to the tip. The dependence of the line shape on the molecule's asymmetric couplings in the tunnel junction can be understood from theoretical simulation and further validates the mechanisms of inelastic electron tunneling.

Abstract
Puccinia psidii (Myrtle rust) is an emerging pathogen that has a wide host range in the Myrtaceae family; it continues to show an increase in geographic range and is considered to be a significant threat to Myrtaceae plants worldwide. In this study, we describe the development and validation of three novel real-time polymerase reaction (qPCR) assays using ribosomal DNA and β-tubulin gene sequences to detect P. psidii. All qPCR assays were able to detect P. psidii DNA extracted from urediniospores and from infected plants, including asymptomatic leaf tissues. Depending on the gene target, qPCR was able to detect down to 0.011 pg of P. psidii DNA. The most optimum qPCR assay was shown to be highly specific, repeatable, and reproducible following testing using different qPCR reagents and real-time PCR platforms in different laboratories. In addition, a duplex qPCR assay was developed to allow coamplification of the cytochrome oxidase gene from host plants for use as an internal PCR control. The most optimum qPCR assay proved to be faster and more sensitive than the previously published nested PCR assay and will be particularly useful for high-throughput testing and to detect P. psidii at the early stages of infection, before the development of sporulating rust pustules.

Abstract
Using inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM-IETS) and density functional theory calculations (DFT), we investigated properties of a single H2 molecule trapped in nanocavities with controlled shape and separation between the STM tip and the Au (110) surface. The STM tip not only serves for the purpose of characterization, but also is directly involved in modification of chemical environment of molecule. The bond length of H2 expands in the atop cavity, with a tendency of dissociation when the gap closes, whereas it remains unchanged in the trough cavity. The availability of two substantially different cavities in the same setup allows understanding of H2 adsorption on noble metal surfaces and sets a path for manipulating a single chemical bond by design.

Abstract
A hydrogen molecule can diffuse freely on the surface and be trapped above an adsorbed molecule within the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope. The trapped dihydrogen exhibits the properties of a free rotor. Here we show that the intermolecular interaction between dihydrogen and Mg-porphyrin (MgP) can be visualized by imaging j=0 to 2 rotational excitation of dihydrogen. The interaction leads to a weakened H-H bond and modest electron donation from the dihydrogen to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of MgP, a process similarly observed for the interaction between dihydrogen and an adsorbed Au atom.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Endocannabinoids are a family of lipid mediators involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal (GI) motility. The expression, localization and function of their biosynthetic enzymes in the GI tract are not well understood. Here, we examined the expression, localization and function of the enzyme diacylglycerol lipase-α (DAGLα), which is involved in biosynthesis of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Cannabinoid CB1 receptor-deficient, wild-type control and C3H/HeJ mice, a genetically constipated strain, were used. The distribution of DAGLα in the enteric nervous system was examined by immunohistochemistry. Effects of the DAGL inhibitors, orlistat and OMDM-188 on pharmacologically induced GI hypomotility were assessed by measuring intestinal contractility in vitro and whole gut transit or faecal output in vivo. Endocannabinoid levels were measured by mass spectrometry. KEY RESULTS DAGLα was expressed throughout the GI tract. In the intestine, unlike DAGLβ, DAGLα immunoreactivity was prominently expressed in the enteric nervous system. In the myenteric plexus, it was colocalized with the vesicular acetylcholine transporter in cholinergic nerves. In normal mice, inhibiting DAGL reversed both pharmacologically reduced intestinal contractility and pharmacologically prolonged whole gut transit. Moreover, inhibiting DAGL normalized faecal output in constipated C3H/HeJ mice. In colons incubated with scopolamine, 2-AG was elevated while inhibiting DAGL normalized 2-AG levels. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS DAGLα was expressed in the enteric nervous system of mice and its inhibition reversed slowed GI motility, intestinal contractility and constipation through 2-AG and CB1 receptor-mediated mechanisms. Our data suggest that DAGLα inhibitors may be promising candidates for the treatment of constipation.

Abstract
The rotational and vibrational transitions of a hydrogen molecule weakly adsorbed on the Au(110) surface at 10 K were detected by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy with a scanning tunneling microscope. The energies of the j=0 to j=2 rotational transition for para-H(2) and HD indicate that the molecule behaves as a three-dimensional rigid rotor trapped within the tunnel junction. An increase in the bond length of H(2) was precisely measured from the downshift in the rotational energy as the tip-substrate distance decreases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To review the outcome of patients with post-traumatic acute subdural haematoma (ASDH) before and after the establishment of a hospital trauma team at a designated trauma centre. METHOD A retrospective analysis was conducted on 82 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for post-traumatic ASDH. The 'PRE' and 'POST' groups included patients admitted before and after the establishment of a hospital trauma team, respectively. Injury severity was assessed by the admission Glasgow coma score, imaging findings, and the revised trauma score. Clinical outcome measures were the hospital length of stay and the Glasgow outcome score (GOS) upon hospital discharge. RESULTS The overall mortality rate was 53.7%. No significant difference was found between the PRE and POST groups. The mean length of hospital stay was also comparable between the two groups. The functional status of those who survived acute hospital care was significantly better in the POST group. Good outcome (GOS of 4 or 5) was achieved in 66.7% of the survivors in the POST group, compared with 25.0% in the PRE group (p=0.024). CONCLUSION Post-traumatic ASDH carried a poor prognosis. The mortality rate and hospital length of stay of patients were not found to be reduced after the establishment of a hospital trauma team. The latter, however, was associated with significantly better functional outcome amongst survivors. Although causality cannot be established due to the multitude of factors which may have affected patient outcome, our findings nonetheless provide further support for the introduction of a multidisciplinary hospital trauma team for the optimal care of trauma patients.
