Abstract
Cinnamomum cassia (cassia) is a tropical aromatic evergreen tree of the Lauraceae family well known for its fragrance and spicy flavor and widely used in Asian traditional medicine. It has recently garnered attention for its diverse potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic properties. However, the gastroprotective effect of C. cassia, particularly against ethanol-induced gastric damage, remains unclear. We investigated the potential gastroprotective property of C. cassia and the underlying mechanisms of action in a rat model of ethanol-induced gastric injury. To assess its effectiveness, rats were fed C. cassia for a 14-day period prior to inducing gastric damage by oral administration of ethanol. Our results indicated that pre-treatment with C. cassia mitigated ethanol-induced gastric mucosal lesions and bleeding. Reduced gastric acid secretion and expression of acid secretion-linked receptors were also observed. Additionally, pretreatment with C. cassia led to decreased levels of inflammatory factors, including TNF-α, p-p65, and IκBα. Notably, C. cassia upregulated the expressions of HO1 and HSP90, with particular emphasis on the enhanced expression of PAS and MUC, the crucial gastric mucosa defense molecules. These findings suggest that C. cassia has protective effects on the gastric mucosa and can effectively reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.

Abstract
To explore the application value of serum Gal-13, GLP-1 and VEGF in the prevention and guidance of adverse pregnancy outcomes in gestational diabetes (GDM). A retrospective study with case-control method was used to select 1 012 GDM patients from Haikou Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January 2019 to December 2022 as the study objects, and they were divided into poor pregnancy outcome group (n=342) and good pregnancy outcome group (n=670) according to whether they had adverse pregnancy outcomes. The medical records of 521 healthy women with normal glucose metabolism were selected as the control group. Serum Gal-13 and GLP-1 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and VEGF was determined by IAMMGE specific protein analyzer. After comparing the differences of the above factors among the three groups, multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of adverse pregnancy outcomes in GDM patients, and ROC curve was drawn to analyze the predictive value of serum Gal-13, GLP-1 and VEGF levels on adverse pregnancy outcomes in GDM patients. The results showed that Fasting blood glucose (FPG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting insulin (FINS) in the adverse pregnancy outcome group were 5.92(4.98, 6.41) mmol/L, 5.32(4.96, 5.47)%, 62.56(49.21,99.50) pmol/L, VEGF was 495.47(389.14, 567.13) ng/L, TSH was 1.48(1.34, 1.58) mIU/L, right ventricular myocardial work index (Tei index) was 0.59(0.45, 0.67), 89 cases of elderly parturients; FPG was 4.45(4.16, 5.03) mmol/L, HbA1c was 5.04(4.86, 5.29)%, FINS was 57.41(46.90, 74.08) pmol/L, VEGF was 405.84(348.02, 462.68) ng/L, TSH was 1.42(1.25, 1.50) mIU/L, Tei index was 0.50(0.47, 0.64), there were 142 cases of old women. In the control group, FPG was 4.33(4.05, 4.75) mmol/L, HbA1c was 5.01(4.13, 5.18)%, FINS was 38.48(36.76, 41.72) pmol/L and VEGF was 302.45(283.14, 336.56) ng/L, TSH was 1.32(1.24, 1.47)mIU/L, Tei index was 0.48(0.39, 0.59), and there were 106 elderly parturiencies. The levels of FPG, HbA1c, FINS, VEGF, TSH and Tei index in the adverse pregnancy outcome group and the good pregnancy outcome group were higher than those in the control group, and the proportion of elderly parturients was higher than that in the control group, and the adverse pregnancy outcome group was higher than that in the good pregnancy outcome group. The differences were statistically significant (H=8.620, P<0.001, H=2.616, P=0.014, H=6.156, P<0.001, H=3.051, P<0.001, H=4.892, P=0.044, χ2=2.548, P=0.045). In the adverse pregnancy outcome group, Gal-13 was 15.27(8.35, 24.45)pg/ml, GLP-1 was 9.27(8.26, 12.35) pmol/L and FT4 was 11.59(9.67, 13.48) pmol/L. In the group with good pregnancy outcome, Gal-13 was 25.34(20.14, 29.73) pg/ml, GLP-1 was 12.38(10.25, 15.63) pmol/L and FT4 was 13.86(10.67, 15.10) pmol/L. In the control group, Gal-13 was 31.21(27.48, 34.45) pg/ml, GLP-1 was 11.34(10.40, 14.37) pmol/L and FT4 was 14.15(10.75, 15.43)pmol/L. The levels of Gal-13, GLP-1 and FT4 in the adverse pregnancy outcome group and the good pregnancy outcome group were significantly lower than those in the control group, and the adverse pregnancy outcome group was lower than that in the good pregnancy outcome group. The differences were statistically significant (H=6.458, P=0.011, H=8.445, P<0.001, H=5.694, P<0.001). The levels of Gal-13 and GLP-1 in normal blood glucose recovery group were higher than those in non-normal blood glucose recovery group, and the levels of VEGF were lower than those in non-normal blood glucose recovery group (P<0.05).In multivariate logistic regression analysis, Gal-13, GLP-1, VEGF, TSH, FT4 and Tei indexes were independent influencing factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes with GDM (P<0.05). ROC curve analysis showed that the AUC of Gal-13, GLP-1 and VEGF alone in predicting adverse pregnancy were 0.779, 0.761 and 0.615, respectively. The value of the combined diagnosis was the highest (AUC=0.912), the sensitivity was 90.1%, and the specificity was 80.0%. In conclusion, Gal-13, GLP-1 and VEGF may be independent influencing factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes in GDM patients, and the combined detection of the three may help to improve the auxiliary diagnostic efficacy for predicting adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Gastric mucosa is important to protect the gastric damage against external factors. We previously reported the gastro-protective effects of steamed and freeze-dried mature silkworm larval powder (SMSP) in ethanol-treated rats. However, the factors that promote mucosal formation still remain unclarified. In this study, we evaluated the effect of SMSP on the restoration and maintenance of gastric mucosal layer as well as anti-inflammatory response in ethanol-induced stomach injury in rats. A significant decrease of ulcer indexes, histopathological scores and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels was observed in SMSP-treated group. In addition, SMSP protected the mucosal layer from ethanol-induced gastric damage by increasing the expression of nitric oxide synthases and heat shock proteins, along with promoting genes related gastric mucosal protection and biosynthesis including mucin 5AC and trefoil factors. These results demonstrate that SMSP attenuates the pro-inflammatory responses and strengthens the gastric mucosal layer, thus exhibiting gastro-protective effect against ethanol-induced gastric injury in rats.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of autologous mucosal transplantation to prevent esophageal stricture after near-circumferential endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early esophageal cancer. Methods: The case data of 33 patients, who underwent near-circumferential ESD for early esophageal cancer and were followed up regularly in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from April 2017 to July 2022, were analyzed retrospectively, including 14 males and 19 females, aged (66.4±7.4) (47-77) years. According to the different treatment methods, they were divided into 4 groups: group A (6 cases) were treated with autologous mucosa transplantation and fully covered metal stent implantation, combined with oral, intravenous and local injection of hormone; Group B (8 cases) were treated with autologous mucosa transplantation and fully covered metal stent implantation; Group C (11 cases) were treated with fully covered metal stent implantation combined with oral or intravenous hormone; Group D (8 cases) were treated with fully covered metal stent implantation. After the operation, the growth of the transplanted mucosa, esophageal stricture and surgical complications were observed by endoscopy, so as to understand the efficacy of automucosa transplantation in preventing esophageal stricture after near-circumferential ESD for early esophageal cancer. Results: The gastroscopic operation was successful in 33 patients. The times of expansion in groups B, C and D were more than that in group A, and the times of expansion [M(Q1,Q3)] in group A were 0(0, 1.8) times, while the times of expansion in group B, C and D were 5.5(4.3, 6.8), 4.0(4.0, 7.0) and 5.5(3.5, 10.8) times, respectively, with statistical significance (all P<0.05). There was no significant difference in times of expansion among groups B, C and D (all P>0.05). The stent placement time [M(Q1,Q3)] in group B [7.5(6.3, 8.8) days] was shorter than that in group A [64.5(41.5, 75.5) days] (P=0.006). There was no significant difference in stent placement time between group C [38.0(28.0, 50.0) days] and group D [31.5(27.3, 66.3) days] and group A (both P>0.05). The stent placement time in group C was longer than that in group B (P<0.05).There was no significant difference in stent placement time between group B, C and D (all P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of complications among the groups (all P>0.05). Conclusions: Autologous mucosal transplantation is safe and effective in preventing stenosis after near-circumferential ESD for early esophageal cancer. The effect of autologous mucosal transplantation combined with fully covered metal stent placement, systemic and local steroid application in preventing esophageal stricture after near-circumferential ESD for early esophageal cancer is better than that of single application.

Abstract
EC-IC bypasses have been performed to treat complex aneurysms or moyamoya disease or atherosclerotic steno-occlusive disease. We report the three cases that underwent EC-IC revascularization of the IMA-M2 bypass using the radial artery graft concurrently after the STA-MCA anastomosis to prevent potential ischemic damage during the operation and augment more flow in terminal internal carotid artery stenosis. All patients experienced neither perioperative complications nor further events for a 3-month follow-up. The double-barreled IMA-M2 and STA-MCA bypass is a good option for substantial amount of EC-IC revascularization with minimizing ischemic injury and maximizing flow amount in patients with severe hemodynamic compromise.

Abstract
Purpose of this study was to compare the complication rates between reverse-tapered and nontapered peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). In total, 407 patients who had an inpatient clinic-based PICC insertion between September 2019 and November 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Seven PICC types were used (4 reverse tapered: 4-Fr single-lumen (n = 75), 5-Fr single-lumen (n = 78), 5-Fr double-lumen (n = 62), and 6-Fr triple-lumen (n = 61); 3 nontapered: 4-Fr single-lumen (n = 73), 5-Fr double-lumen (n = 30), and 6-Fr triple-lumen (n = 23)). Complications such as periprocedural bleeding, delayed bleeding, inadvertent removal, catheter obstruction by thrombosis, infection, and leakage were investigated. The overall complication rate was 27.1%. The complication rate was significantly higher for nontapered PICCs than reverse-tapered PICCs (50.0% vs 16.7%, P < 0.001). The overall periprocedural bleeding rate was significantly higher for nontapered PICCs than for reverse-tapered PICCs (27.0% vs 6.2%, P <0.001). The overall inadvertent removal rate was significantly higher for nontapered PICCs than for reverse-tapered PICCs (15.1% vs 3.3%, P < 0.001). There were no other significant differences in complication rates. Nontapered PICCs were associated with higher rates of periprocedural bleeding and inadvertent removal than reverse-tapered PICCs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of using 3D polylines (3DPs) to improve cone-beam CT (CBCT) virtual navigation (VN)-guided percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsies (PTNB) of pulmonary lesions. METHODS From May 2021 to November 2021, patients (81 males and 41 females; age, 65 ± 12 years) who underwent CBCT VN with 3DPs for PTNB of pulmonary lesions were retrospectively reviewed. Fluoroscopic visibility of target lesions was evaluated using captured images from a Bull's eye view. Diagnostic accuracy was calculated, and complications were assessed. RESULTS The mean size of biopsied lesions was 23 ± 13 mm (range: 6-75 mm). Overall, 13.9% (17/122) were small pulmonary nodules (diameter ≤1 cm), and 68.0% (83/122) of biopsied lesions were fluoroscopic visible. The overall diagnostic accuracy was 94.3%. The diagnostic accuracy for visible and invisible lesions was 94.0 and 94.9%, respectively (p = 0.843), and 100% for small pulmonary nodules. Major complications occurred in 8.2% (10/122; eight pneumothorax with chest tube insertion, one hemoptysis with transfusion, and one air embolism) of patients. CONCLUSION CBCT VN with 3DP guidance provide a real-time outline of pulmonary lesions, thus enabling a reliable and accurate PTNB. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE 3DP guidance could be useful technique for CBCT-guided PTNB, especially in small pulmonary nodules.

Abstract
Propolis, a natural resinous substance obtained from a variety of buds and plants, has been reported to possess various biological functions. Several recent studies have demonstrated the inhibitory effects of propolis on the growth of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in vitro; however, current research efforts on Korean propolis (KP) remain insufficient especially in vivo. Our study aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect and molecular mechanism of KP on mouse gastric mucosa during H. pylori infection. We examined an in vivo H. pylori-induced gastric mucosal injury mice model. We found that KP inhibited the growth of H. pylori and attenuated the expression of H. pylori virulence factors such as cytotoxin-associated gene A, encoding urease A subunit, surface antigen gene and neutrophil-activating protein A. Moreover, KP reduced both gross lesions and pathological scores in H. pylori-challenged mice. In addition, KP markedly restrained the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide levels compared with an untreated H. pylori-infected group. In particular, we found that KP repressed the phosphorylation of IκBα and NF-κB p65 subunit, and subsequently suppressed their downstream target genes. Taken together, these findings demonstrate the beneficial effects of KP on inflammation through the inhibition of NF-κB signaling as well as inhibition of H. pylori growth in a mouse model infected with H. pylori. This suggests the potential application of KP as a natural supplement for patient’s suffering from gastric mucosal injury caused by H. pylori infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Not many imaging techniques have been reported in Eustachian tube imaging. PURPOSE To investigate the role of selective Eustachian tubography (SET) and Valsalva computed tomography (CT) in patients who underwent Eustachian tube balloon dilation (ETBD). MATERIAL AND METHODS Eligible patients were aged 18 years and older with chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction who had failed medical treatment. On the day of the procedure, Valsalva CT and SET were performed. Participants underwent fluoroscopic ETBD with a 6×20-mm balloon catheter. Clinical examinations to check for the ability to perform the Valsalva maneuver and ETDQ-7 score change were conducted at one week and then at one, two, and six months. Follow-up Valsalva CT was performed in the one-month follow-up. RESULTS A total of 30 ears in 23 patients (16 right ears, 14 left ears; 10 women, 13 men) underwent ETBD from August 2018 to November 2019. Positive CT patency was higher in follow-up Valsalva CT than baseline Valsalva CT (40% and 23.3%, respectively) (P = 0.006). In SET, positive patency was observed in 13 of 25 ears. Response to balloon dilation was observed in 18 of 25 patients. Clinical success was achieved in 16 of 27 ears. Response to balloon dilation was the only significant predictor of clinical success (P = 0.012). CONCLUSION SET depicted the lumen of the Eustachian tube; thereby, it could be a potentially valuable tool in ETBD. Valsalva CT provides additional information about the cartilaginous portion of the Eustachian tube.

Abstract
This study aimed to report the specific methods and investigate the educational effects of diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound training and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for traditional medicine students. Scanning volar wrist and diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome were selected for musculoskeletal ultrasound to train students to use the basic functions of the ultrasound device and scan various structures including tendons, nerves, and arteries. The students were divided into two groups: one group had 8 weeks of training with mock OSCE experience and received feedback about their scan images, and the other group had 3 weeks of training with flipped learning. The OSCE was implemented on the last day of the training. The subjective learning outcomes were analyzed as students’ evaluation with a 5-point scale, and the objective learning outcomes were analyzed using OSCE scores evaluated with a pre-validated checklist. Of the 111 students, 60 (54.1%) responded to the questionnaire. Overall satisfaction with this ultrasound training was high (4.5 ± 0.60). The average OSCE score in the 8-week group was significantly higher than that in the 3-week group. The students’ self-assessment showed no significant differences between the two groups. Proficiency in using ultrasound is affected by the practice time and feedback. Ultrasound training should be further expanded as a required curriculum to meet students’ needs and achieve learning objectives in the clinical skills education of Korean medicine colleges. Further studies are needed on ultrasound education, especially guided interventions for traditional medicine students.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) for progressive keratoconus and to evaluate changes in the parameters of rigid gas permeable contact lens (RGPCL) fitting after surgery. Methods: It was a prospective cohort study. Fifty-three eyes of 41 keratoconus patients received accelerated CXL in Qingdao Eye Hospital of Shandong First Medical University from May to December 2018. There were 31 males and 10 females, aged (20.46±4.15) years. According to the corneal thickness, de-epithelial CXL (33 eyes) or trans-epithelial CXL (20 eyes) was performed. The best spectacle-corrected visual acuity, refractive power and the thinnest corneal thickness at baseline and at 6 weeks were compared. Corneal topography was performed at baseline and at 6 weeks, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Rose K RGPCLs were used before and 6 weeks after surgery, and the fitting status was monitored until 12 months after surgery. The t test was performed to analyze the difference before and after the operation. Results: The best spectacle-corrected visual acuity, refractive power, and the thinnest corneal thickness were not significantly changed over 6 weeks of follow-up, but the Kf, Ks and Kmax values were significantly increased in all patients (all P<0.05). In the de-epithelial group, the Kmax values before the operation, at 3, 6 and 12 months after the operation were (55.00±5.51) diopters (D), (54.73±5.34) D, (54.58±6.15) D and (54.20±5.49) D, respectively, and the decrease at 12 months was significant [(0.80±2.05) D; t=2.25, P=0.001]. In the trans-epithelial group, the Kmax values were (59.43±8.98) D, (57.97±8.79) D, (58.19±8.37) D and (56.94±7.19) D at the four time points, respectively, and the decreases at 3, 6 and 12 months were all significant [(1.46±2.09) D, (1.25±1.82) D, (2.49±3.64) D; t=3.12, 3.06, 3.50; P=0.006, 0.006, 0.007]. The best RGPCL-corrected visual acuity, the diameter and the average diopters of RGPCLs showed no significant change in both groups. The RGPCL base curve decreased by 0.07 mm in the de-epithelial group and by 0.13 mm in the trans-epithelial group (both P<0.05). The design of edge lifting was used in 10 eyes postoperatively in the de-epithelial group compared with 8 eyes preoperatively, and in 4 eyes postopratively in the trans-epithelial group compared with 7 eyes preoperatively. The number of eyes using the toric peripheral design of the lens was increased to 3 compared with 2 preoperatively in the de-epithelial group and from 1 to 4 in the trans-epithelial group. The acceptance rate of RGPCL fitting in both groups increased at 6 and 12 months after surgery compared to 6 weeks after surgery. Conclusions: The corneal curvature became steep slightly at 6 weeks after CXL and gradually recovered and flattened. The Kmax in the trans-epithelial group decreased earlier and more than that in the de-epithelial group. The base curve of the RGPCLs was slightly reduced after 6 weeks, and the toric peripheral design was increasingly needed, but the requirement for the design of the lifted edge was different between the two groups. A good RGPCL fitting can be achieved within 1 year after CXL.

Abstract
In the bone marrow, classical and plasmacytoid dendritic cells (DC) develop from the macrophage-DC precursor (MDP) through a common DC precursor (CDP) step. This developmental process receives essential input from the niche in which it takes place, containing endothelial cells (EC) among other cell types. Here we show that targeted deletion of serine/threonine kinase 11 (Stk11) encoding tumor suppressor liver kinase b1 (Lkb1) in mouse ECs but not DCs, results in disrupted differentiation of MDPs to CDPs, severe reduction in mature DC numbers and spontaneous tumorigenesis. In wild type ECs, Lkb1 phosphorylates polypyrimidine tract binding protein 1 (Ptbp1) at threonine 138, which regulates stem cell factor (Scf) pre-mRNA splicing. In the absence of Lkb1, exon 6 of Scf is spliced out, leading to the loss of Scf secretion. Adeno-associated-virus-mediated delivery of genes encoding either soluble Scf or the phosphomimetic mutant Ptbp1T138E proteins rescued the defects of MDP to CDP differentiation and DC shortage in the endothelium specific Stk11 knockout mice. In summary, endothelial Stk11 expression regulates DC differentiation via modulation of Scf splicing, marking the Stk11-soluble-Scf axis as a potential cause of DC deficiency syndromes.

Abstract
Intratympanic (IT) therapies have been explored to address several side effects that could be caused by systemic administration of steroids to treat inner ear diseases. For effective drug delivery to the inner ear, an IT delivery system was developed using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) and thermosensitive gels to maintain sustained release. Dexamethasone (DEX) was used as a model drug. The size and zeta potential of PLGA NPs and the gelation time of the thermosensitive gel were measured. In vitro drug release was studied using a Franz diffusion cell. Cytotoxicity of the formulations was investigated using SK-MEL-31 cells. Inflammatory responses were evaluated by histological observation of spiral ganglion cells and stria vascularis in the mouse cochlea 24 h after IT administration. In addition, the biodistribution of the formulations in mouse ears was observed by fluorescence imaging using coumarin-6. DEX-NPs showed a particle size of 150.0 ± 3.2 nm in diameter and a zeta potential of −18.7 ± 0.6. The DEX-NP-gel showed a gelation time of approximately 64 s at 37 °C and presented a similar release profile and cytotoxicity as that for DEX-NP. Furthermore, no significant inflammatory response was observed after IT administration. Fluorescence imaging results suggested that DEX-NP-gel sustained release compared to the other formulations. In conclusion, the PLGA NP-loaded thermosensitive gel may be a potential drug delivery system for the inner ear.

Abstract
Aortic diseases are the primary public health concern. As asymptomatic diseases, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and atherosclerosis are associated with high morbidity and mortality. The inflammatory process constitutes an essential part of a pathogenic cascade of aortic diseases, including atherosclerosis and aortic aneurysms. Inflammation on various vascular beds, including endothelium, smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration, and inflammatory cell infiltration (monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, etc.), play critical roles in the initiation and progression of aortic diseases. The tryptophan (Trp) metabolism or kynurenine pathway (KP) is the primary way of degrading Trp in most mammalian cells, disturbed by cytokines under various stress. KP generates several bioactive catabolites, such as kynurenine (Kyn), kynurenic acid (KA), 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK), etc. Depends on the cell types, these metabolites can elicit both hyper- and anti-inflammatory effects. Accumulating evidence obtained from various animal disease models indicates that KP contributes to the inflammatory process during the development of vascular disease, notably atherosclerosis and aneurysm development. This review outlines current insights into how perturbed Trp metabolism instigates aortic inflammation and aortic disease phenotypes. We also briefly highlight how targeting Trp metabolic pathways should be considered for treating aortic diseases.

Abstract
Titanium implants present 2 major drawbacks-namely, the long time needed for osseointegration and the lack of inherent antimicrobial properties. Surface modifications and coatings to improve biomaterials can lose their integrity and biological potential when exposed to stressful microenvironments. Graphene nanocoating (GN) can be deposited onto actual-size dental and orthopedic implants. It has antiadhesive properties and can enhance bone formation in vivo. However, its ability to maintain structural integrity and quality when challenged by biologically relevant stresses remains largely unknown. GN was produced by chemical vapor deposition and transferred to titanium via a polymer-assisted transfer technique. GN has high inertness and did not increase expression of inflammatory markers by macrophages, even in the presence of lipopolysaccharides. It kept high coverage at the top tercile of tapered dental implant collars after installation and removal from bone substitute and pig maxilla. It also resisted microbiologically influenced corrosion, and it maintained very high coverage area and quality after prolonged exposure to biofilms and their removal by different techniques. Our findings show that GN is unresponsive to harsh and inflammatory environments and that it maintains a promising level of structural integrity on the top tercile of dental implant collars, which is the area highly affected by biofilms during the onset of implant diseases. Our findings open the avenues for the clinical studies required for the use of GN in the development of implants that have higher osteogenic potential and are less prone to implant diseases.

Abstract
A cerium-doped YAG (Y₃Al5O12) phosphor is used as a rare-earth element phosphor for blue light absorption and yellow light emission for a white light source. A solution combustion synthesis, which is a method for producing nano-powder, is a reaction that is spontaneous ignition by reaction heat released through oxidation/reduction reaction between metal nitrate and fuel. Since the reaction speed is fast and it does not go through a separate firing process, it is a method of easily synthesizing nano-powder by simple process. In this study, YAG:Ce nano-powders were prepared by using various fuels in the combustion synthesis method. Depending on the kind of the additive fuel, the reaction of the combustion synthesis process was different, and the shape of the powder particles according to the fuels was also different. The agglomerated particles of nanoparticles were observed and the characteristics of YAG:Ce powders synthesized under various conditions were analyzed.

Abstract
The fine-tuning of neuroinflammation is crucial for brain homeostasis as well as its immune response. The transcription factor, nuclear factor-κ-B (NFκB) is a key inflammatory player that is antagonized via anti-inflammatory actions exerted by the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). However, technical limitations have restricted our understanding of how GR is involved in the dynamics of NFκB in vivo. In this study, we used an improved lentiviral-based reporter to elucidate the time course of NFκB and GR activities during behavioral changes from sickness to depression induced by a systemic lipopolysaccharide challenge. The trajectory of NFκB activity established a behavioral basis for the NFκB signal transition involved in three phases, sickness-early-phase, normal-middle-phase, and depressive-like-late-phase. The temporal shift in brain GR activity was differentially involved in the transition of NFκB signals during the normal and depressive-like phases. The middle-phase GR effectively inhibited NFκB in a glucocorticoid-dependent manner, but the late-phase GR had no inhibitory action. Furthermore, we revealed the cryptic role of basal GR activity in the early NFκB signal transition, as evidenced by the fact that blocking GR activity with RU486 led to early depressive-like episodes through the emergence of the brain NFκB activity. These results highlight the inhibitory action of GR on NFκB by the basal and activated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis during body-to-brain inflammatory spread, providing clues about molecular mechanisms underlying systemic inflammation caused by such as COVID-19 infection, leading to depression.

Abstract
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most commonly prescribed medications for alleviating pain and inflammation but may cause gastrointestinal tract damage. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) prevent NSAID-induced gastric damage but may aggravate intestinal damage via dysbiosis and intestinal permeability alteration. Currently, there is growing interest regarding the influence of potassium competitive acid blockers (PCAB) on NSAID-induced enteropathy. Here, we investigated the relative changes in indomethacin-induced enteropathy by combining indomethacin with pantoprazole (as PPI) or revaprazan (as PCAB). We examined intestinal permeability-related molecular changes in in vitro Caco-2 cell models and in an in vivo indomethacin-induced enteropathy rat model. Indomethacin alone or in combination with pantoprazole significantly increased relative lucifer yellow dye flux and decreased relative trans-epithelial electrical resistance and tight junction protein (TJP) expression compare to normal cells. In contrast, indomethacin combined with revaprazan significantly preserved TJPs compare to indomethacin-treated cells. MLC phosphorylation, Rho activation, and ERK activation responsible for TJP were significantly increased by indomethacin alone or a combination of indomethacin and pantoprazole but not by a combination of indomethacin and revaprazan. Intestinal damage scores significantly increased with indomethacin and pantoprazole combination but not with indomethacin and revaprazan combination. Indomethacin and pantoprazole combination significantly activated Rho-GTPase, p-MLC, and p-ERK but significantly decreased TJP expression. However, indomethacin and revaprazan combination significantly preserved TJPs and inactivated Rho-GTPase, MLC, and ERK. Hence, revaprazan rather than PPIs should be co-administered with NSAIDs to mitigate NSAID-induced intestinal damage.

Abstract
Kimchi is composed of various chemopreventive phytochemicals and profuse probiotics, defining kimchi as probiotic foods. Concerns had increased on the modulation of intestinal microbiota on various kinds of systemic diseases. Under the hypothesis that dietary intake of kimchi can be ideal intervention for either ameliorating colitis or preventing colitic cancer, we performed the study to validate the efficolitic cancery of fermented kimchi on preventing colitic cancer. Using azoxymethane-initiated and dextran sulfate sodium-promoted colitic cancer models, we have administrated fermented or non-fermented kimchi to modulate colitic cancer preemptively. Detailed molecular mechanisms were explored. Preemptive administration of fermented kimchi significantly afforded colitic cancer prevention through attenuating inflammasomes (IL-18, IL-1β, caspase-1), enhancing antioxidative (NQO1, GST-π), imposing anti-proliferative (Bax, caspase-3, β-catenin), and affording cytoprotective actions (HSP70, 15-PGDH), while non-fermented kimchi did not prevent colitic cancer. Special recipe cancer preventive kimchi (cpkimchi) was more effective compared to standard recipe fermented kimchi (p<0.01), while non-fermented kimchi (kimuchi) worsened colitic cancer development, telling the importance of fermentation in cancer prevention. Repression of NF-kB p65, induction of tumor suppressive 15-PGDH, and inactivation of ERK1/2 by cpkimchi contributed to colitic cancer prevention. Dietary intake of cpkimchi ameliorated colitis and prevented colitic cancer via concerted anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anti-mutagenic actions.

Abstract
Various nanocrystalline metal alloy powders were synthesized by solution combustion synthesis in a reducing atmosphere in which a spray pyrolysis process was modified. Miscible Cu-Ni alloy powder and immiscible Ag-Ni alloy powder were synthesized, along with Cu-Y₂O₃ metal-ceramic composite powder. X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM observations showed that the synthesized powders were nanocrystalline and well alloyed. Alloying occurred via the chemical routes of the decomposition of the metal salts, as well as the oxidation, reduction and sintering processes.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore the clinical significance of perioperative CTCs (circulating tumor cells) counts and EMT-CTCs (epithelial-mesenchymal transition-CTCs) in rectal cancer patients. A total of 30 patients with rectal cancer who underwent radical resection of rectal cancer at the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region People's hospital were enrolled. Five ml peripheral blood was withdrawn from 30 patients with rectal cancer before the operation and seven days after the operation and at the corresponding time also from 20 healthy volunteers. CanPatrol™ CTC detection technique was used to enrich and identify CTCs and IER3 expression simultaneously. We found out that the preoperative total CTCs were correlated with lymph node metastasis (p=0.008) and tumor size, and mixed CTCs were closely correlated with lymph node metastasis (p=0.009). The number of IER3-positive total CTCs and mesenchymal CTCs were statistically associated with tumor size, p=0.034 and 0.043, respectively. The number of CTCs varied significantly before and after the operation in all patients (p=0.049). There were significant differences in CTCs variations between the open operation group and the laparoscopic operation group. In the laparoscopic operation group, the average number of single-cell CTCs was 6.9 before operation and 3.5 after the operation (p=0.013). In the open operation group, the average number of single-cell CTCs was 5.9 before operation and 4.2 after the operation. To conclude, surgery is associated with a decrease of CTCs in rectal cancer patients, especially in patients receiving laparoscopic surgery. The number of CTCs before the operation in rectal cancer patients is related to the size of tumors and regional lymph node metastasis. CTCs detection and characterization may be useful for clinical staging and lymph node dissection during operation.

Abstract
The identification of metal ions and particles in the vicinity of failed implants has raised the concern that biomedical titanium alloys undergo corrosion in healthy and infected tissues. Various surface modifications and coatings have been investigated to prevent the deterioration and biocorrosion of titanium alloys but so far with limited success. Graphene is a cytocompatible atom-thick film made of carbon atoms. It has a very high surface area and can be deposited onto metal objects with complex shapes. As the carbon lattice has a very small pore size, graphene has promising impermeability capacity. Here, we show that graphene coating can effectively protect Ti-6Al-4V from corrosion. Graphene nanocoatings were produced on Ti-6Al-4V grade 5 and 23 discs and subjected to corrosive challenge (0.5M NaCl supplemented with 2-ppm fluoride, pH of 2.0) up to 30 d. The linear polarization resistance curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis showed that the graphene-coated samples presented higher corrosion resistance and electrochemical stability at all time points. Moreover, the corrosion rate of the graphene-coated samples was very low and stable (~0.001 mm/y), whereas that of the uncoated controls increased up to 16 and 5 times for grade 5 and 23 (~0.091 mm/y) at the end point, respectively. The surface oxidation, degradation (e.g., crevice defects), and leaching of Ti, Al, and V ions observed in the uncoated controls were prevented by the graphene nanocoating. The Raman mappings confirmed that the graphene nanocoating presented high structural stability and resistance to mechanical stresses and chemical degradation, keeping >99% of coverage after corrosion challenge. Our findings open the avenues for the use of graphene as anticorrosion coatings for metal biomedical alloys and implantable devices.

Abstract
Objective A consensus regarding the ideal regimen for urokinase (UK) thrombolysis subsequent to stereotactic spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage aspiration has yet to be established. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of UK thrombolysis relative to when the regimen is changed.
Methods Venous blood from 30 heathy volunteers was obtained for this in-vitro study. Various concentrations of UK solution were added to microcentrifuge tubes containing the clotted blood. The efficacy of UK thrombolysis was identified by checking the weight of lysed hematoma following various time intervals with different concentrations of UK solution. Group one, the “3×4” group involved four administrations every 3 hours over 12 hours, and group two, the “6×2” group involved two administrations every 6 hours over 12 hours.
Results More hematoma was lysed in the 3×4 group than the 6×2 group across all concentration levels (however, the differences were only significant between groups at the 500 and 1000 IU concentration levels, p<0.05). There were no significant differences of lysed hematoma among the various UK solution concentrations within groups.
Conclusion This study suggests that frequent administrations of UK thrombolysis may result in a greater degree of lysed hematoma in comparison to a higher concentration of UK.

Abstract
Cancer cachexia, one of the metabolic syndromes caused by cancer, is a devastating and miserable condition encountered in more than 50% of terminal cancer patients presenting with significant weight loss associated with skeletal muscle atrophy and fat loss. Though cachexia may account for up to 20% of cancer deaths, no significant treatment is still lacking and is of urgent unmet medical need in cancer treatment. Therefore, understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms is essential for anticipating therapeutic approaches. Since the primary events driving cachexia are mediated via either the central nervous system relatedor inflammation related-anorexia, hypoanabolism, and hypercatabolism, therapy usually targets nutritional support to compensate reduced food intake along with some anti-inflammatory agents to cover specific inflammation-related metabolic derangement, and encourages exercise to supplement reduced physical activity, but all proven to be not so effective so far. Therefore, combination therapies such as a standard multi-modal package including an anorexic agent, megestrol acetate, and anti-inflammatory agent coupled with the development of potential novel therapeutics promise a new era in rescuing patients from cancer cachexia. In this review, we propose the potential application of BPC157, one of the active cytoprotective agents isolated from gastric juices for cancer cachexia. Before clinical trial, we introduced the evidence showing BPC157 rescued from cancer cachexia supported with explored mode of actions.

Abstract
Stress-related mucosal disease (SRMD), or stress ulceration, is a group of conditions ranging from stress-related superficial gastric mucosal damage to deep gastric ulcers that are primarily correlated with mucosal ischemia, and pharmacologic interventions that optimize tissue perfusion or preserve defensive mucus aim to decrease the occurrence of conditions, such as gastric acidity, or enhance gastric defenses. However, the identification of multifactorial pathogenesis may be effective in preventing SMRD, and the use of stress prophylaxis is generally preferred. Since threonine is a component in the polymerization and synthesis of gastric mucin and possibly enhanced defense actions and lignin may provide structural support for defense and antioxidative function, we hypothesized that dietary intake of threonine and/or lignin can enhance defense against SRMD. The water immersion-restraint stress (WIRS) was used in rats and additional groups were pretreated with threonine alone or the combination of threonine and lignin. Based on gross and microscopic evaluations, threonine alone or the combination of threonine and lignin, a natural antioxidant, significantly reduced the development of SRMD (P < 0.05). According to molecular explorations, the levels of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin (IL)-8, IL-6, IL-1β, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interferon gamma (IFN-γ), all of which are mediators that play a significant role in controlling WIRS, significantly decreased in the groups pretreated with either threonine alone or the combination of threonine and lignin (P < 0.01). WIRS significantly increased apoptosis in the stomach. However, the apoptotic index significantly decreased with threonine pretreatment. According to periodic acid Schiff staining results, the expression of gastric mucin was significantly preserved in groups pretreated with threonine but remarkedly decreased in the WIRS group. The gastric heme oxygenase-1 levels significantly increased in the group treated with threonine. In conclusion, the dietary intake of threonine or the combination of threonine and lignin is effective in preventing SRMD.

Abstract
Cancer cachexia is a syndrome accompanying weight loss, skeletal muscle atrophy, and loss of adipose tissue in patients with advanced cancer. Since interleukin-6 (IL-6) is one of core mediators causing cancer cachexia and kimchi can modulate IL-6 response, we hypothesized dietary intake of kimchi can ameliorate cancer cachexia. In this study, we studied preemptive administration of kimchi can ameliorate mouse colon carcinoma cells colon (C26) adenocarcinoma-induced cancer cachexia and explored anti-cachexic mechanisms of kimchi focused on the changes of muscle atrophy, cachexic inflammation, and catabolic catastrophe. As results, dietary intake of kimchi significantly attenuated the development of cancer cachexia, presented with lesser weight loss, higher muscle preservation as well as higher survival from cancer cachexia in mice. Starting from significant inhibition of IL-6 and its signaling, kimchi afforded significant inhibition of muscle specific ubiquitin-proteasome system including inhibition of atrogin-1 and muscle ring finger protein-1 (MuRF-1) with other muscle related genes including mitofusin-2 (Mfn-2) and PGC-1α. Significant inhibition of lipolysis gene such as adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) and hormone-sensitive ligase (HSL) accompanied with significant induction of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and sterol response element binding protein 1 (SREBP1) was achieved with kimchi. As gene regulation, IL-6 and their receptor as well as Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) were significantly attenuated with kimchi. In conclusion, dietary intake of cancer preventive kimchi can be an anticipating option to ameliorate cancer cachexia via suppressive action of IL-6 accompanied with decreased muscle atrophy and lipolysis.

Abstract
Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase complex-interacting multifunctional protein 1 (AIMP1)-derived peptide (AdP) has been developed as a cosmeceutical ingredient for skin anti-aging given its fibroblast-activating (FA) and melanocyte-inhibiting (MI) functions. However, a suitable strategy for the topical delivery of AdP was required due to its low-permeable properties. In this study, FA and MI domains of AdP (FA-AdP and MI-AdP, respectively) were determined by functional domain mapping, where the activities of several fragments of AdP on fibroblast and melanocyte were tested, and a hydrosol-based topical delivery system for these AdP fragments was prepared. The excipient composition of the hydrosol was optimized to maximize the viscosity and drying rate by using Box-Behnken design. The artificial skin deposition of FA-AdP-loaded hydrosol was evaluated using Keshary-Chien diffusion cells equipped with Strat-M membrane (STM). The quantification of the fluorescent dye-tagged FA-AdP in STM was carried out by near-infrared fluorescence imaging. The optimized hydrosol showed 127-fold higher peptide deposition in STM than free FA-AdP (p < 0.05). This work suggests that FA- and MI-AdP are active-domains for anti-wrinkle and whitening activities, respectively, and the hydrosol could be used as a promising cosmetic formulation for the delivery of AdPs to the skin.

Abstract
Nanosized Ni, NiCo-Y₂O₃ powders were successfully synthesized at low temperature via a simple polymer solution route. As an organic carrier, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) afforded an atom-scale homogeneous precursor gel, which in turn gave fully crystallized nanosized Ni, NiCo-Y₂O₃ powder upon calcination at a low temperature under an Ar-4% H₂ atmosphere. The PVA content, calcination temperature, heating time, and reduction conditions affected the microstructure and crystallization behavior of the as-synthesized powders. The PVA content also influenced the synthesis behavior and microstructure of the final powder. The particle size increased with an increase in the calcination temperature and decrease in the PVA content. At a PVA-metal ion ratio of 4:1, the measured particle size was about 20 nm. The results of TEM mapping on the NiCo-Y (0.6 wt%) powders revealed a well-dispersed Y₂O₃ phase in the NiCo crystalline matrix.

Abstract
Metastasis is the leading cause of cancer mortality and cancer cell migration is an essential stage of metastasis. We identified benproperine (Benp, a clinically used antitussive drug) as an inhibitor of cancer cell migration and an anti-metastatic agent. Benp selectively inhibited cancer cell migration and invasion, which also suppressed metastasis of cancer cells in animal models. Actin-related protein 2/3 complex subunit 2 (ARPC2) was identified as a molecular target of Benp by affinity column chromatography with Benp-tagged Sepharose beads. Benp bound directly to ARPC2 in cells, which was validated by pull-down assay using Benp-biotin and label-free biochemical methods such as the drug affinity responsive target stability (DARTS) and cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA). Benp inhibited Arp2/3 function, showing disruption of lamellipodial structure and inhibition of actin polymerization. Unlike Arp2/3 inhibitors, Benp selectively inhibited the migration of cancer cells but not normal cells. ARPC2-knockdown cancer cells showed defective cell migration and suppressed metastasis in an animal model. Therefore, ARPC2 is a potential target for anti-metastatic therapy, and Benp has the clinical potential to block metastasis. Furthermore, Benp is a useful agent for studying the functions of the Arp2/3 complex in cancer cell migration and metastasis.

Abstract
Administration of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water led to significant bout of colitis simulating ulcerative colitis of human. However, colitis usually developed 5 - 7 days after DSS administration. Therefore, we hypothesized host defense system might protect colitis up to 5 days of DSS administration. 2.5% DSS-induced colitis were administered to C57BL/6 mice and sequential measurements of pathology, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), NADPH quinone oxidoreductase-1 (NQO1), γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), and keap1 were done at 2, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 120, and 168 hour of DSS administration, respectively. DSS-induced colitis was repeated in either COX-2-/- or Nrf2-/- mice. On serial pathological analysis, significant colitis was noted after 120 h of DSS administration, during which both activations of COX-2/NF-κB and HO-1/Nrf2 were noted. Nrf2 activations after keap1 inactivation led to significant increases in HO-1 after 168 hours of DSS administration, when NF-κB nuclear translocation was noted. Significantly attenuated colitis was noted in DSS-challenged COX-2-/- mice, in which the levels of HO-1 were significantly decreased compared to DSS-challenged WT littermates (p < 0.01), while the levels of NQO1 were significantly increased. On DSS administration to Nrf2-/- mice, colitis was significantly aggravated (p < 0.01), in which the expressions of COX-2 as well as expressions of HO-1 and γ-GCS were significantly increased (p < 0.01). Reciprocal activations of inflammatory and antioxidative defense signaling after DSS administration might be prerequisite to make intestinal homeostasis and host defense Nrf2 system can determine colitis.

Abstract
Bioluminescence imaging has proven to be a highly sensitive technique for assessing in vitro transcriptional activity toward understanding gene regulation patterns; however, application of this technique is limited for brain research. In particular, the poor spatiotemporal resolution is a major hurdle for monitoring the dynamic changes of transcriptional activity in specific regions of the brain during longitudinal analysis of living animals. To overcome this limitation, in this study, we modified a lentivirus-based luciferase glucocorticoid receptor (GR) reporter by inserting destabilizing sequence genes, and then the reporter was stereotaxically injected in the mouse infralimbic prefrontal cortex (IL-PFC). Using this strategy, we could successfully pin-point and monitor the dynamic changes in GR activity in IL-PFC during normal stress adaptation. The modified reporter showed a 1.5-fold increase in temporal resolution for monitoring GR activity compared to the control, with respect to the intra-individual coefficients of variation. This novel in vivo method has broad applications, as it is readily adaptable to different types of transcription factor arrays as well spanning wide target regions of the brain to other organs and tissues.

Abstract
Background/Aims In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), repeated bouts of remission and relapse occur in patients and can impose a risk of colitis-associated cancer. We hypothesized that plant extracts of Atractylodes macrocephala (AM) or Taraxacum herba (TH) may be better than sulfasalazine for treating this disease because these extracts can promote additional regeneration. Methods Murine intestinal epithelial IEC-6 cells were pretreated with AM or TH before a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced challenge. Acute colitis was induced with 7 days of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in male C57BL/6 mice, and extracts of AM and TH were administered for 2 weeks before DSS administration. Results In vitro studies demonstrated that AM or TH treatment reduced LPS-induced COX-2 and tumor necrosis factor-α mRNA levels but increased heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). Oral preadministration of AM and TH rescued mice from DSS-induced colitis by inhibiting inflammatory mediators via inactivated extracellular signal regulated kinase and repressed nuclear factor κB and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3, but the effect was weaker for sulfasalazine than that for the extracts. Anti-inflammatory activities occurred via the inhibition of macrophage and T lymphocyte infiltrations. Unlike sulfasalazine, which did not induce HO-1, TH extracts afforded significant HO-1 induction. Conclusions Because the AM or TH extracts were far superior in preventing DSS-induced colitis than sulfasalazine, AM or TH extracts can be considered natural agents that can prevent IBD relapse.

Abstract
Numerous studies have demonstrated that diets containing an increased ratio of ω-6 : ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are a risk factor for colon cancer and might affect tumorigenesis. Therefore, dietary ω-3 PUFA administration may be a preventive strategy against colon cancer. Until now, the exact molecular mechanisms and required dietary doses of ω-3 PUFAs for cancer prevention were unknown. In this study, we explored the anti-tumorigenic mechanisms of ω-3 PUFAs against a colitis-associated cancer (CAC) model. Through in vitro cell models involving docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) administration, down-regulation of survivin and Bcl-2, and up-regulation of Bax, accompanied by blockage of β-catenin complex dissociation, the main mechanisms responsible for DHA-induced apoptosis in HCT116 cells were determined. Results included significant reduction in azoxymethane-initiated, dextran sodium sulfate-promoted CACs, as well as significant preservation of 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) and significant inhibition of Cyclooxyganase-2 (COX-2) and Prostaglandin E2(P < 0.01). Additional mechanisms and significant induction of apoptosis in both tumor and non-tumor tissues were also noted in fat-1 transgenic (TG) mice. The lipid profiles of colon tissues measured in all specimens revealed that intake greater than 3 g ω-3 PUFA/60 kg of body weight showed tissue levels similar to those seen in fat-1 TG mice, preventing cancer. Our study concluded that COX-2 inhibition, 15-PGDH preservation, apoptosis induction, and blockage of β-catenin complex dissociation contributed to the anti-tumorigenesis effect of ω-3 PUFAs, and an intake higher than 3g ω-3 PUFAs/60 kg of body weight can assist in CAC prevention.

Abstract
Dietary approaches to preventing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-associated gastric carcinogenesis are widely accepted because surrounding break-up mechanisms are mandatory for cancer prevention, however, eradication alone has been proven to be insufficient. Among these dietary interventions, omega-3-polyunsaturated-fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) are often the first candidate selected. However, there was no trial of fatty acids in preventing H. pylori-associated carcinogenesis and inconclusive results have been reported, likely based on inconsistent dietary administration. In this study, we developed an H. pylori initiated-, high salt diet promoted-gastric tumorigenesis model and conducted a comparison between wild-type (WT) and Fat-1-transgenic (TG)-mice. Gross and pathological lesions in mouse stomachs were evaluated at 16, 24, 32, and 45 weeks after H. pylori infection, and the underlying molecular changes to explain the cancer preventive effects were investigated. Significant changes in: i) ameliorated gastric inflammations at 16 weeks of H. pylori infection, ii) decreased angiogenic growth factors at 24 weeks, iii) attenuated atrophic gastritis and tumorigenesis at 32 weeks, and iv) decreased gastric cancer at 45 weeks were all noted in Fat-1-TG-mice compared to WT-mice. While an increase in the expression of Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, and reduced expression of the tumor suppressive 15-PGDH were observed in WT-mice throughout the experimental periods, the expression of Hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) was preserved in Fat-1-TG-mice. Using a comparative protein array, attenuated expressions of proteins implicated in proliferation and inflammation were observed in Fat-1-TG-mice compared to WT-mice. Conclusively, long-term administration of ω-3 PUFAs can suppress H. pylori-induced gastric tumorigenesis through a dampening of inflammation and reduced proliferation in accordance with afforded rejuvenation.

Abstract
Abundance of the ATPase-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and deranged self-renewal pathways characterize the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in gastrointestinal cancers (GI cancers), which play crucial roles in tumorigenesis, chemotherapy resistance, tumor recurrence, and cancer metastasis. Therefore, in order to ensure high cure rates, chemoquiescence, CSCs should be ablated. Recent advances in either understanding CSCs or biomarker identification enable scientists to develop techniques for ablating CSCs and clinicians to provide cancer cure, especially in GI cancers characterized by inflammation-driven carcinogenesis. Areas covered: A novel approach to ablate CSCs in GI cancers, including esophageal, gastric, and colon cancers, is introduced along with explored underlying molecular mechanisms. Expert commentary: Though CSC ablation is still in the empirical stages and not in clinical practice, several strategies for ablating CSCs in GI cancers had been published, proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) that regulate the membrane-bound ABC transporters, which underlie drug resistance; chloroquine (CQ) that inhibits autophagy, which is responsible for tumor survival; Hedgehog/Wnt/Notch inhibitors that influence the underlying stem-cell growth, and some natural products including Korean red ginseng, cancer-preventive kimchi, Artemisia extract, EGCG from green tea, and walnut extracts.

Abstract
8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is generated consequent to oxidative stress, but its paradoxical anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-mutagenic effects via Rho-GTPase inhibition were noted in various models of inflammation and cancer. Metastasis occurs through cell detachment, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and cell migration; during these processes, changes in cell morphology are initiated through Rho-GTPase-dependent actin cytoskeleton polymerization. In this study, we explored the anti-metastatic mechanisms of 8-OHdG in Panc-1 pancreatic cancer cells. 8-OHdG inhibits cell migration by inactivating ERM and Rho-GTPase proteins, and inhibiting focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). At 15min, 8-OHdG significantly inactivated ERM (p < 0.05) and led to a significant retardation of wound healing; siERM and H1152 (ROCK inhibitor) had similar effects (p < 0.05). However, FAK inhibitor 14, DPI (NOX inhibitor), and NAC (antioxidant) significantly delayed wound healing without inhibiting ERM or CD44 (p < 0.05). In the experiments on cell migration, siERM, siCD44, DPI, and 8-OHdG significantly inhibited MMPs. 8-OHdG significantly decreased DCF-DA activation in Panc-1 pancreatic cancer cells and down-regulated NOXs (nox-1, nox-2, and nox-3). Finally, all of these anti-migration actions of 8-OHdG resulted in significant inhibition of EMT, as evidenced by the up-regulation of ZO-1 and claudin-1 and down-regulation of vimentin. We found significant inhibition of lung metastasis of Panc-1 cells by 8-OHdG. In conclusion, exogenous 8-OHdG had potent anti-metastasis effects mediated by either ERM or Rho GTPase inhibition in metastasis-prone pancreatic cancer cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVEIn this study the authors evaluated whether extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery can prevent stroke occurrence and decrease mortality in adult patients with symptomatic moyamoya disease (MMD).METHODSThe medical records of 249 consecutive adult patients with symptomatic MMD that was confirmed by digital subtraction angiography between 2002 and 2011 at 8 institutions were retrospectively reviewed. The study outcomes of stroke recurrence as a primary event and death during the 6-year follow-up and perioperative complications within 30 days as secondary events were compared between the bypass and medical treatment groups.RESULTSThe bypass group comprised 158 (63.5%) patients, and the medical treatment group comprised 91 (36.5%) patients. For 249 adult patients with MMD, bypass surgery showed an HR of 0.48 (95% CI 0.27–0.86, p = 0.014) for stroke recurrence calculated by Cox regression analysis. However, for the 153 patients with ischemic MMD, the HR of bypass surgery for stroke recurrence was 1.07 (95% CI 0.43–2.66, p = 0.887). For the 96 patients with hemorrhagic MMD, the multivariable adjusted HR of bypass surgery for stroke recurrence was 0.18 (95% CI 0.06–0.49, p = 0.001). For the treatment modality, indirect bypass and direct bypass (or combined bypass) did not show any significant difference for stroke recurrence, perioperative stroke, or mortality (log rank; p = 0.524, p = 0.828, and p = 0.616, respectively).CONCLUSIONSDuring the treatment of symptomatic MMD in adults, bypass surgery reduces stroke recurrence for the hemorrhagic type, but it does not do so for the ischemic type. The best choice of bypass methods in adult patients with MMD is uncertain. In adult ischemic MMD, a prospective randomized study to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of bypass surgery to prevent recurrent stroke is necessary.

Abstract
Fat stress-induced liver disease is a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome initiated by excess fat accumulation and encompasses a wide spectrum of diseases from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, a precursor lesion progressing to more aggressive liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although the incidence of these fat stress-induced liver diseases is rapidly increasing worldwide in parallel with the growing epidemics of obesity and metabolic diseases, its exact pathogenesis is not well defined. Although obesity, sedentary life-style, altered dietary pattern, insulin resistance, altered intestinal barrier function, inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress have been acknowledged as contributing factors because of the indefinite pathogenesis of metabolic diseases, the only reliable treatment is lifestyle intervention composed of restrictive diet and exercise. Additionally, some existing medications such as pioglitazone and antioxidants such as vitamin E were reported to be effective; in this review, several novel agents especifically targeting nonalcoholic fatty liver disease pathogenesis under clinical trial will be introduced. These include an NPC1L1 blocker (ezetimibe), which significantly improved histological and symptomatic scores associated with steatohepatitis and fibrosis; clofibrate, phentoxyfylline, ursodeoxycholic acid, and tocopherol, all of which are prescribed to relieve fat stress; and additional IgY targeted NPC1L1, tocotrienol, ursodeoxycholic acid, and ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are actively under investigation to confirm the safety of long-term use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiation enteropathy is a common complication in patients with abdominopelvic cancer, but no treatment has yet been established. Stem cell therapy may be a viable therapeutic option because intestinal stem cells are highly vulnerable to ionizing radiation (IR) and stem cell loss explains its intractability to general treatment. Here, we investigated either prophylactic or therapeutic efficacy of human placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hPDSCs) against radiation enteropathy and could identify biomarkers predicting a favorable response to stem cell therapy. METHODS We challenged a radiation-induced enteropathy model with hPDSCs. After sacrifice, we checked the gross anatomy of small intestine, histology gross, and analyzed that, accompanied with molecular changes implicated in this model. RESULTS hPDSCs significantly improved the outcome of mice induced with either radiation enteropathy or lethal radiation syndrome (P < 0.01). hPDSCs exerted inhibitory actions on inflammatory cytokines, the re-establishment of epithelium homeostasis was completed with increasing endogenous restorative processes as assessed with increased levels of proliferative markers in the hPDSCs group, and a significant inhibition of IR-induced apoptosis. The preservation of cells expressing lysozyme, and Musashi-1 were significantly increased in the hPDSC treatment group. Both preventive and therapeutic efficacies of hPDSCs were noted against IR-induced enteropathy. Label-free quantification was used to identify biomarkers which predict favorable responses after hPDSC treatment, and finally glutathione S-transferase-mu type, interleukin-10, and peroxiredoxin-2 were validated as proteomic biomarkers predicting a favorable response to hPDSCs in radiation enteropathy. CONCLUSIONS hPDSCs may be a useful prophylactic and therapeutic cell therapy for radiation enteropathy.

Abstract
PRKAA (protein kinase, AMP-activated, α catalytic subunit) regulates mitochondrial biogenesis, function, and turnover. However, the molecular mechanisms by which PRKAA regulates mitochondrial dynamics remain poorly characterized. Here, we report that PRKAA regulated mitochondrial fission via the autophagy-dependent degradation of DNM1L (dynamin 1-like). Deletion of Prkaa1/AMPKα1 or Prkaa2/AMPKα2 resulted in defective autophagy, DNM1L accumulation, and aberrant mitochondrial fragmentation in the mouse aortic endothelium. Furthermore, autophagy inhibition by chloroquine treatment or ATG7 small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection, upregulated DNM1L expression and triggered DNM1L-mediated mitochondrial fragmentation. In contrast, autophagy activation by overexpression of ATG7 or chronic administration of rapamycin, the MTOR inhibitor, promoted DNM1L degradation and attenuated mitochondrial fragmentation in Prkaa2-deficient (prkaa2-/-) mice, suggesting that defective autophagy contributes to enhanced DNM1L expression and mitochondrial fragmentation. Additionally, the autophagic receptor protein SQSTM1/p62, which bound to DNM1L and led to its translocation into the autophagosome, was involved in DNM1L degradation by the autophagy-lysosome pathway. Gene silencing of SQSTM1 markedly reduced the association between SQSTM1 and DNM1L, impaired the degradation of DNM1L, and enhanced mitochondrial fragmentation in PRKAA-deficient endothelial cells. Finally, the genetic (DNM1L siRNA) or pharmacological (mdivi-1) inhibition of DNMA1L ablated mitochondrial fragmentation in the mouse aortic endothelium and prevented the acetylcholine-induced relaxation of isolated mouse aortas. This suggests that aberrant DNM1L is responsible for enhanced mitochondrial fragmentation and endothelial dysfunction in prkaa knockout mice. Overall, our results show that PRKAA deletion promoted mitochondrial fragmentation in vascular endothelial cells by inhibiting the autophagy-dependent degradation of DNM1L.

Abstract
Patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have an increased risk for progression to hepatocellular carcinoma in addition to comorbidities such as cardiovascular and serious metabolic diseases; however, the current therapeutic options are limited. Based on our previous report that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) can significantly ameliorate high fat diet (HFD)-induced NAFLD, we explored the therapeutic efficacy of n-3 PUFAs and N-IgY, which is a chicken egg yolk-derived IgY specific for the Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) cholesterol transporter, on NAFLD in mice. We generated N-IgY and confirmed its efficient cholesterol transport-blocking activity in HepG2 and Caco-2 cells, which was comparable to the effect of ezetimibe (EZM). C57BL/6 wild type and fat-1 transgenic mice, capable of producing n-3 PUFAs, were fed a high fat diet (HFD) alone or supplemented with N-IgY. Endogenously synthesized n-3 PUFAs combined with N-IgY led to significant decreases in hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, and inflammation (p<0.01). The combination of N-IgY and n-3 PUFAs resulted in significant upregulation of genes involved in cholesterol uptake (LDLR), reverse cholesterol transport (ABCG5/ABCG8), and bile acid metabolism (CYP7A1). Moreover, fat-1 transgenic mice treated with N-IgY showed significant downregulation of genes involved in cholesterol-induced hepatic stellate cell activation (Tgfb1, Tlr4, Col1a1, Col1a2, and Timp2). Collectively, these data suggest that n-3 PUFAs and N-IgY, alone or in combination, represent a promising treatment strategy to prevent HFD-induced fatty liver through the activation cholesterol catabolism to bile acids and by decreasing cholesterol-induced fibrosis.

Abstract
A solution combustion process for the synthesis of perovskite (CaTiO3) powders is described. Perovskite is one of the crystalline host matrics for the disposal of high-level radioactive wastes (HLW) because it immobilizes Sr and Lns elements by forming solid solutions. Solution combustion synthesis, which is a self-sustaining oxi-reduction reaction between nitrate and organic fuel, the exothermic reaction, and the heat evolved convert the precursors into their corresponding oxide products above 1100 degrees C in air. To investigate the effects of amino acid on the combustion reaction, various types of fuels were used; a glycine, amine and carboxylic ligand mixture. Sr, La and Gd-nitrate with equivalent amounts of up to 20% of CaTiO3 were mixed with Ca and Ti nitrate and amino acid. X-ray diffraction analysis, SEM and TEM were conducted to confirm the formed phases and morphologies. While powders with an uncontrolled shape are obtained through a general oxide-route process, Ca(Sr, Lns)TiO3 powders with micro-sized soft agglomerates consisting of nano-sized primary particles can be prepared using this method.

Abstract
OBJECT As nonmicrobial dietary approach is capable of controlling Helicobacter pylori infection, we evaluated the efficacy of long-term dietary administration of Artemisia and/or green tea extracts on H. pylori-initiated, high-salt-promoted chronic atrophic gastritis and gastric tumorigenesis mouse model. METHODS Helicobacter pylori-infected and high-salt-diet-administered C57BL/6 mice were administered with Artemisia extracts (MP group) and/or green tea extracts (GT group) for 36 weeks in addition to the control group (ES group, gastroprotective drug, ecabet sodium 30 mg/kg, diet pellet). Gross and pathological gastric lesions were evaluated after 24 and 36 weeks, respectively, and their underlying molecular changes were measured in gastric homogenates. Detailed mechanisms were further evaluated in in vitro cell models. RESULTS The erythematous and nodular changes and mucosal ulcerative and erosive lesions were noted in the control group at 24 weeks. MP, GT, MPGT, and ES groups all showed significantly ameliorated pathologic lesion compared to the control group (p < .05). After the 36 weeks, scattered nodular masses with some central ulcers and thin gastric surface were noted in the control stomach, whereas no tumorous lesion and milder atrophic changes were observed in all MP, GT, and MPGT groups except ES group (p < .05). On molecular analysis, increased expressions of COX-2, TNF-α, IL-6, lipid peroxide, and activated STAT3 relevant to H. pylori infection were significantly decreased with MPGT administration (p < .01), whereas HSP70 was significantly increased. PGDH expressions, core tumor suppressor involved in carcinogenesis, were significantly decreased with H. pylori infection (p < .05), but significantly increased in MPGT group (p < .05). Increased mucosal apoptotic index noted in the control group was significantly decreased with MP and/or GT along with significantly preserved gastric gastroprotective mediators (p < .01) such as mucins, HSP27, and HSP70. H. pylori-induced serum TNF-α and NF-κB activations were significantly decreased with MPGT administration (p < .05). CONCLUSION Long-term dietary intake of MP and/or GT can be an effective strategy either to rejuvenate H. pylori atrophic gastritis or to suppress tumorigenesis.

Abstract
Synroc (Synthetic Rock) consists of four main titanate phases: peroveskite (CaTiO3), zirconolite (CaZrTi2O7), hollandite (BaAl2Ti6O16) and rutile (TiO2). Nano-polycrystalline synroc powders were made by a synthesis combustion process. The combustion process, an externally initiated reaction is self-sustained owing to the exothermic reaction. A significant volume of gas is evolved during the combustion reaction and leads to loosely agglomerated powders. This exothermic reaction provides necessary heat to further carry the reaction in forward direction to produce nanocrystalline powders as the final product. Glycine is used as a fuel, being oxidized by nitrate ions. It is inexpensive, has high energy efficiency, fast heating rates, short reaction times and high compositional homogeneity. In this study, combustion synthesis of nano-sized synroc-B powder is introduced. The fabrication of synroc-B powder result of observation XRD were prepared for polycrystalline (perovskite, zirconolite, hollandite, rutile) structures. The characterization of the synthesized powders is conducted by using XRD, SEM/EDS and TEM.

Abstract
Cu nano particles were fabricated at a very low temperature via polymer solution and reduction firing processes using a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Ar-4%H2 gas mixture. In the process, copper nitrate and 5 wt% PVA solution were dissolved in D.I. water and the organic-inorganic precursor sols were dried to porous gels. The precursor gels were calcined in an air atmosphere, and then refired at 250 degrees C-300 degrees C under an Ar-4%H2 atmosphere for the reduction of CuO. The morphology of precursor gels and CuO and Cu powders was strongly dependent on the PVA content, and the as- calcined CuO readily deoxidized to Cu with minimal residual carbon. The polymer also contributed to an atomic-scale copper cation distribution, which resulted in nano-sized CuO and Cu powders. The Cu powder synthesized with PVA content in a 4:1 ratio showed a crystallite size of about 20 nm or less. In this paper, the microstructure changes of Cu nano particles at each set of processing conditions were examined by SEM and TEM observations.
