Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the clinical and ultrasonographic (US) findings of suture granulomas and recurrent tumors, and aimed to identify specific characteristics of suture granulomas through an experimental study. METHODS This retrospective study included 20 pathologically confirmed suture granulomas and 40 recurrent tumors between January 2010 and December 2020. The clinical findings included suture material, surgery, and initial TNM stage. The US findings included shape, size, margin, echogenicity, heterogeneity, vascularity, and internal echogenic foci. The distribution, paired appearance, and "knot-and-ear" appearance of internal echogenic foci were assessed. An experiment using pork meat investigated the US configuration of suture knots. RESULTS Eighteen patients with 20 suture granulomas (15 women; mean age, 52±13 years) and 37 patients with 40 recurrent tumors (24 women; 54±18 years) were included. Patients with suture granulomas exhibited earlier initial T and N stages than those with recurrent tumors. The knot-and-ear appearance, defined as an echogenic dot accompanied by two adjacent echogenic dots or lines based on experimental findings, was observed in 50% of suture granulomas, but not in recurrent tumors (P<0.001). Central internal echogenic foci (68.8%, P=0.023) and paired appearance (75.0%, P<0.001) were more frequent in suture granulomas. During follow-up, 94.1% of suture granulomas shrunk. CONCLUSION The knot-and-ear appearance is a potential pathognomonic finding of suture granuloma, and central internal echogenic foci with paired appearance were typical US features. Clinically, suture granulomas showed early T and N stages and size reduction during follow-up. Understanding these features can prevent unnecessary biopsy or diagnostic surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgery for irreversible hyperparathyroidism is the preferred management for kidney transplant patients. The authors analyzed the factors associated with persistent hypercalcemia after parathyroidectomy in kidney transplant patients and evaluated the appropriate extent of surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors retrospectively analyzed 100 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy because of persistent hyperparathyroidism after kidney transplantation at a tertiary medical center between June 2011 and February 2022. Patients were divided into two groups: 22 with persistent hypercalcemia after parathyroidectomy and 78 who achieved normocalcemia after parathyroidectomy. Persistent hypercalcemia was defined as having sustained hypercalcemia (≥10.3 mg/dl) 6 months after kidney transplantation. The authors compared the biochemical and clinicopathological features between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify potential risk factors associated with persistent hypercalcemia following parathyroidectomy. RESULTS The proportion of patients with serum intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) level is greater than 65 pg/ml was significantly high in the hypercalcemia group (40.9 vs. 7.7%). The proportion of patients who underwent less than subtotal parathyroidectomy was significantly high in the persistent hypercalcemia group (17.9 vs. 54.5%). Patients with a large remaining size of the preserved parathyroid gland (≥0.8 cm) had a high incidence of persistent hypercalcemia (29.7 vs. 52.6%). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the drop rate of intact PTH is less than 88% on postoperative day 1 (odds ratio 10.3, 95% CI: 2.7-39.1, P =0.001) and the removal of less than or equal to 2 parathyroid glands (odds ratio 6.8, 95% CI: 1.8-26.7, P =0.001) were identified as risk factors for persistent hypercalcemia. CONCLUSION The drop rate of intact PTH is less than 88% on postoperative day 1 and appropriate extent of surgery for controlling the autonomic function were independently associated with persistent hypercalcemia. Confirmation of parathyroid lesions through frozen section biopsy or intraoperative PTH monitoring can be helpful in preventing the inadvertent removal of a parathyroid gland and achieving normocalcemia after parathyroidectomy.

Abstract
Underground shopping malls (USMs) are often open or semi-open environments with interconnected passageways, resulting in the sharing of indoor air. However, indoor air quality (IAQ) within these spaces can vary due to many diverse emission sources. We investigated the relationships between IAQ and geographical areas, as well as IAQ and store types, within USMs, in Korea. In 2020, we studied 10 different USMs, with a total of 128 outlets. We conducted comprehensive IAQ assessments (including measurements of fine particles (PM2.5), aldehydes, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)) in stores, passages, and outdoor areas. The stores were categorized into three types: clothing, fashion accessories, and food services. Additionally, we measured environmental factors such as CO2 levels and presence of storefront walls. PM2.5 levels were higher outdoors, whereas aldehyde and VOC levels exhibited elevations within passages and the interior of stores than in the outdoor environment. The store-to-passage ratios for PM2.5, individual aldehydes, and VOC concentrations ranged from 1.06 to 4.93. Formaldehyde and total VOC (TVOC) concentrations were found to be elevated in clothing and fashion accessory stores, whereas PM2.5 concentrations were more prominent in food service establishments. Specific individual compounds, including propionaldehyde, hexaldehyde, benzene, n-heptane, toluene, n-octane, xylene, d-limonene, n-undecane, n-dodecane, and ethylbenzene concentrations exhibited associations with store types. Multivariate regression models demonstrated positive associations between most aldehydes and VOCs with CO2 concentrations and presence of storefront walls. This study underscored variations within USMs based on area and store type. Aldehyde and VOC concentrations were notably higher in clothing and fashion accessory stores than in food service outlets; these elevations were closely linked to CO2 levels and presence of storefront walls. These findings suggest that monitoring CO2 levels within USM stores, optimizing air-conditioning systems, and designing future stores without storefront walls can collectively contribute to an overall improvement of IAQ within USMs.

Abstract
Purpose Silent pheochromocytoma refers to tumors without signs and symptoms of catecholamine excess. This study aimed to clarify the clinical, radiological characteristics, and perioperative features of silent pheochromocytomas diagnosed after adrenalectomy for adrenal incidentaloma. Methods Medical records of patients who underwent adrenalectomy for adrenal incidentaloma and were subsequently diagnosed with silent pheochromocytoma between January 2000 and December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed for demographic, diagnostic, surgical, and pathological findings. Results Of the 130 patients who underwent adrenalectomy for incidentaloma, 8 (6.1%) were diagnosed with silent pheochromocytoma. Almost all patients had no hypertensive symptoms and their baseline hormonal levels remained within normal ranges. All patients exhibited tumor size >4 cm, precontrast Hounsfield unit >10, and absolute washout <60%. Intraoperative hypertensive events were noted in 2 patients (25.0%) in whom antiadrenergic medications were not administered. All patients in the intraoperative hypertensive event group exhibited atypical features on CT, whereas 83.3% of patients in the non-intraoperative hypertensive event group showed atypical features on CT imaging. Conclusion Silent pheochromocytomas share radiological traits with malignant adrenal tumors. Suspicious features on CT scans warrant surgical consideration for appropriate treatment. Administering alpha-blockers can enhance hemodynamic stability during adrenalectomy in suspected silent pheochromocytoma cases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the adherence rate to poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors and identify factors contributing to the deterioration of adherence at our institution. METHODS The adherence rate to PARP inhibitors was calculated using self-reported Adherence to Refills and Medications Scale questionnaires from a cross-sectional survey. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the factors that affected adherence. RESULTS Of the 131 respondents, 32 (24.4%) showed non-adherence to PARP inhibitors. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, unemployed or retired status (odds ratio [OR]=4.878; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.528-15.572; p=0.008), patients receiving niraparib (OR=3.387; 95% CI=1.283-8.940; p=0.014), and a lower score on the quality-of-life assessment (EORTC-QLQ-OV28), which reflects a better quality of life (QOC) with a lower symptom burden (OR=1.056; 95% CI=1.027-1.086; p<0.001) were associated with high adherence to PARP inhibitors. CONCLUSION Approximately one-fourth of patients with ovarian cancer are non-adherent to PARP inhibitors as maintenance treatment for newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer. The occupational status, type of PARP inhibitor, and QOC may affect adherence to PARP inhibitors.

Abstract
The adulteration of meat products using colourants and curing agents has heightened concerns over food safety, thereby necessitating the development of advanced detection methods. This study introduces a deep-learning-based spectroscopic method for swiftly identifying counterfeit beef altered to appear fresh. The experiment involved 60 beef samples, half of which were artificially adulterated using a colouring solution. Despite meticulous analysis of the beef's colour attributes, no significant differences were observed between the fresh and adulterated samples. However, our method, utilising a 344-1040 nm spectral range, achieved a classification accuracy of 98.84%. To enhance practicality, we employed gradient-weighted class activation mapping and identified the 580-600 nm range as particularly influential for classification. Remarkably, even when we narrowed the input to the model to this spectral range, a high level of classification accuracy was maintained. To further validate the model's robustness and generalisability, we allocated 70 beef samples to an external validation set. Comparative performance analysis revealed that our model outperformed traditional machine learning algorithms, such as SVM and logistic regression, by 9.3% and 28.4%, respectively. Overall, this study offers invaluable insights for detecting counterfeited beef, thereby contributing to the preservation of meat product quality and integrity within the food industry.

Abstract
Abstract
Despite the rapidly growing interest on cancer stem cells (CSCs) from cancer biologists, oncologists and the clinic because of their crucial role in recurrence and metastasis due to resistance in solid cancers, including GBM, there is still a lack of robust, effective in vivo-like 3D CSC models from cancer cells or patient-derived tumor tissues. In this sense, we developed a novel functional polymer thin film (Poly-X-PTF) via a streamlined liquid-phase synthesis, a more facile and advanced version than previous lab-made vapor-deposited poly(2,4,6,8-tetravinyl-2,4,6,8-tetramethyl cyclotetrasiloxane) called pV4D4-PTF. Emerging from a previous success with pV4D4, the new platform, Poly-X, could also simply stimulate surface stimuli-guided, rapid transformation of differentiated cancer cells to a number of ECM-enriched, similar-sized 3D CSC-like tumor spheroids from both commercialized cancer cell lines and patient-derived primary GBM cells. Varied GBM patient-derived cancer spheroids demonstrated a variety of phenotypes and transcriptomic profiles known about glioma stem cells (GSCs) in common. Notably, respective sensitivities of different patient-based 3D GSC spheroids to irradiation with or without temozolomide were retrospectively associated with the individual therapeutic outcome and overall survival, as a result of clinically relevant concurrent chemoradiation treatment (CCRT) regimens proposed in a fast Poly-X-spheroids-based 3D viability assay format. Ultimately, this versatile platform may serve to study fundamental CSC biology. Furthermore, it may translate into a powerful preclinical ex vivo tool in glioma medical settings both to aid in on-site prospective prediction of the patient-specific prognosis via CCRT viability responses within around 10 days and assess a patient-tailored, promising drug candidate or combination treatment.

Abstract
ABSTRACT In a recent study, a comprehensive library composed of 212 phantoms with different body sizes was established by deforming the adult male and female mesh-type reference computational phantoms (MRCPs) of ICRP Publication 145 and the next-generation ICRP reference phantoms over the current voxel-type reference phantoms of ICRP Publication 110. In this study, as an application of the MRCP-based phantom library, we investigated dosimetric impacts due to the different body sizes for neutron external exposures. A comprehensive dataset of organ/tissue dose coefficients (DCs) for idealized external neutron beams with four phantoms for each sex representatively selected from the phantom library were produced by performing Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 code. The body size-dependent DCs produced in this study were systematically analyzed, observing that the variation of the body weights overall played a more important role in organ/tissue dose calculations than the variation of the body heights. We also observed that the reference body-size DCs based on the MRCPs indeed significantly under- or overestimated the DCs produced using the phantoms, especially for those much heavier (male: 175 cm and 140 kg; female: 165 cm and 140 kg) than the reference body sizes (male: 176 cm and 73 kg; female: 163 cm and 60 kg) by up to 1.6 or 3.3 times, respectively. We believe that the use of the body size-dependent DCs, together with the reference body-size DCs, should be beneficial for more reliable organ/tissue dose estimates of individuals considering their body sizes rather than the most common conventional approach, i.e., the sole use of the reference body size DCs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the effects of isolating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in general wards, we compared the rates of COVID-19 infection in nurses and nursing assistants working in COVID-19 designated wards and in general wards of our hospital from 1 October 2021 to 21 April 2022. METHODS This study was conducted in a 2,700-bed tertiary care hospital in Seoul, Korea. Designated wards comprised single, negative pressure rooms and a 100% outdoor air system. RESULTS During the study period, a total of 2,698 nurses and nursing assistants were employed at our hospital, of whom 310 (11%) were working in the designated wards, and the remaining 2,388 (89%) in the general wards, and among whom 1,158 (43%) were diagnosed with COVID-19. The healthcare workers (HCWs) in the designated wards were less frequently diagnosed with COVID-19 than those in the general wards (31% vs. 45%, P < 0.001). During the period before patients with COVID-19 were isolated in general wards, and during the period after these cases were isolated in general ward, HCWs in designated wards were less frequently infected with the virus than those in general wards (7% vs. 11%, P = 0.039; and 23% vs. 33%, P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION HCWs in designated wards have a lower rate of contracting COVID-19 than those in general wards. A lack of exposure to undiagnosed cases and their caregivers, greater care with social distancing outside the hospital, higher rates of 3-dose vaccinations, and the use of isolation rooms with negative pressure may be associated with this finding.

Abstract
Background
Sexual and reproductive health literacy (SRHL) refers to the ability to access, understand, appraise, and apply information for decision-making related to sexual and reproductive health. The low level of SRHL in adolescents increases their sexually risky behaviors and endangers sexual health. Although early adolescence is a critical development period for forming initial views on sexuality and is often a time for attempting risky behaviors, studies on SRHL for early adolescents are fairly limited in Las PDR. As an initial step for the development of a global health project between Lao PDR and South Korea, this study assessed the level of SRHL and the differences in gender among early adolescents in Lao PDR.
Methods
Participants were 235 students conveniently recruited from one junior high school each in two provinces in Lao PDR. SRHL was measured using the 39-item Teen Pregnancy Health Literacy scale consisting of 4 subscales of finding, understanding, appraisal, and application. The scores were classified into inadequate, problematic, sufficient, and excellent using the SRHL index formula. The mean differences in gender were compared using t-test.
Results
The mean of the SRHL scores of the participants was 19.07 (±10.57). The mean score was significantly lower for girls, at 17.67 (±11.22) than for boys, at 21.37 (±9.05) (p = .006). Significant differences were further identified in all four sub-domains of SRHL: finding (p = .025), understanding (p = .005), appraisal (p = .041), and application (p = .029). The majority of participants (91.7%) were categorized as having an ‘inadequate’ or ‘problematic’ level of SRHL.
Conclusions
The level of SRHL among most early adolescents was found to be inadequate. The level of SRHL among girls was much lower than that among boys. The findings suggest a gender-specific approach to developing health education programs to improve SRHL among early adolescents and prevent future sexually risky behaviors in Lao PDR.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) related to hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) following primary or interval cytoreductive surgery for primary ovarian cancer. Methods Between 2010 and 2016, a total of 184 patients were randomly assigned to receive cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC (n=92) or without HIPEC (n=92). Quality of life (QOL) assessment was evaluated at baseline (before surgery); on postoperative day 7; after the 3rd and 6th cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy; and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after randomization. Patient-reported QOL was assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) core questionnaire (EORTC-QLQ-C30), ovarian cancer questionnaire modules (QLQ-OV28), and the MD Anderson Symptoms Inventory (MDASI). Results Of the 184 patients enrolled, 165 (83/92 in the HIPEC group and 82/92 in the control group) participated in the baseline QOL assessment. There were no statistically significant differences in functional scales and symptom scales in QLQ-C30; symptom scales, including gastrointestinal symptoms QLQ-OV28; and severity and impact score in MDASI between the 2 treatment groups until 12 months after randomization. Conclusion HIPEC with cytoreductive surgery showed no statistically significant difference in HRQOL outcomes. Thus, implementation of HIPEC during either primary or interval cytoreductive surgery does not impair HRQOL. Abstract
CONTEXT The long-term quality of life (QoL) in patients with low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) underwent active surveillance (AS) and immediate surgery is unclear. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of initial treatment choice on 2-year QoL in patients with low-risk PTMC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS We analyzed 2652 QoL surveys from 1055 subjects enrolled in ongoing multicenter prospective cohort study on active surveillance of PTMC, in which the median follow-up duration was 24.4 months. MAJOR OUTCOME MEASURE We evaluated QoL of patients with low-risk PTMC according to their treatment modality using generalized estimating equation. RESULTS Six hundred and seventy-four subjects (male = 161; mean age = 48.8 ± 11.9 years) with low-risk PTMC chose AS while 381 subjects (male = 75; mean age = 45.7 ± 10.4 years) chose immediate surgery, including lobectomy/isthmusectomy (L/I) and total thyroidectomy (TT). Among the 817 subjects who completed baseline QoL surveys, 2-year QoL was good in order of AS (n = 500), L/I (n = 238), and TT (n = 79) groups after adjustment for age, sex, baseline tumor size, and baseline QoL scores. Among the 101 subjects who changed their treatment from AS to surgery during the follow-up period, 35 subjects who changed treatment due to disease progression had better QoL than 66 subjects who had no disease progression. CONCLUSIONS This study identified QoL as a major issue in choosing an initial treatment of low-risk PTMC and highlighted the possibility of using AS as the primary treatment.

Abstract
A new, to the best of our knowledge, output coupler (OC) with enhancement of the cavity reflectivity is proposed to remarkably elevate the output powers and efficiencies of diode-pumped Nd:GdVO4/KGW Raman yellow-orange lasers. The cavity reflectivity is effectively increased by using the double-sided dichroic coating on the OC. In comparison with the conventional single-sided coating, the conversion efficiency can be boosted from 15% to 26.3% in the experiment of a yellow laser at 578.8 nm, and the maximum output power can be increased from 5.7 to 10.5 W in the quasi-continuous-wave mode with 50% duty cycle and frequency of 500 Hz. Furthermore, in the operation of an orange laser at 588 nm, the maximum output power can be improved from 5.6 to 7.0 W by replacing the conventional OC with the new one.

Abstract
PURPOSE The agreement between axillary temperature (AT) and rectal temperature (RT) measurements has not been well established in preterm infants. Therefore, our study aimed to evaluate the agreement between AT and RT measurements in very preterm infants. METHODS Preterm infants <32 weeks of gestational age were prospectively included. The infants' body temperature (BT) was measured twice a day from day 1 to day 6. A paired t-test and the Bland-Altman method were used to analyze the difference between the AT and RT. A linear regression model was used to explore the effects of environmental factors on the differences of BT between the axillary and rectal measurements and to calibrate the RT according to the AT. RESULTS Eighty infants each underwent 6 paired axillary and rectal measurements. The gestational age varied from 22 to 31 weeks (mean 28 weeks). The birth weight varied from 302 to 1,770 g (mean 1,025 g). The AT was significantly lower than the RT. The difference between the RT and AT significantly increased with increasing RT. The AT and RT demonstrated poor agreement overall; however, the RT can be estimated using the AT with the following equation: RT = -4.033 + 1.116 × AT. Environmental factors, including the incubator temperature, incubator humidity, phototherapy, and application of invasive mechanical ventilation did not affect the differences between the AT and RT measurements. CONCLUSION AT measurements cannot be interchangeably used with RT measurements in very preterm infants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Radiofrequency thermal (RFT) therapy is commonly performed to treat vaginal laxity (VL), but the optimal technique of RFT therapy is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RFT therapy performed twice on the whole vaginal wall in women with VL. METHODS This was a single-arm, open-label clinical trial conducted in a tertiary hospital in the Republic of Korea from July 2018 to January 2019. Non-pregnant, adult women with VL, defined as a score ≤3 on a vaginal laxity questionnaire (VLQ), were recruited. RFT therapy consisted of 2 office procedures performed 3 weeks apart. Starting from the upper vaginal wall at the 12 o'clock position, the whole vaginal wall was slowly rubbed with a heated vaginal probe for 20 minutes. After the 2nd RFT therapy session, patients had follow-up visits at 4 and 12 weeks, and changes in the VLQ score, Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) score, Female Sexual Distress Scale (FSDS) score, and vaginal pressure at rest and during the Valsalva maneuver and treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were examined. RESULTS Thirty subjects were enrolled, but 28 were evaluated for efficacy measurements. RFT therapy improved the VLQ score (means at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks were 2.5, 4.9, and 4.8, respectively; p < 0.0001), FSFI score (means at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks were 21.9, 27.0, and 27.2, respectively; p < 0.0001), and FSDS score (means at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks were 33.8, 21.1, and 18.6, respectively; p < 0.0001); however, vaginal pressure did not increase. The effect of RFT therapy peaked at the 4-week follow-up and plateaued at week 12. No TEAE was observed, except transient grade 1 vaginal pain. CONCLUSION RFT therapy performed twice on the whole vaginal wall showed promising efficacy and safety profiles and has merit for further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine structural changes in retinal layers over time in patients with non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and determine the layers that predict visual outcomes. METHODS The optical coherence tomography parameters in NAION eyes at <2 months, 2-5 months, and 6-18 months from the onset were compared to age-matched normal controls. Generalised estimating equation analysis was used to analyse the changes over time and regression analysis was performed to identify the layer that could predict visual field outcomes. RESULTS Less than 2 months from the onset, the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) (p = 0.001) and macular outer nuclear layer (ONL) (p = 0.024) were significantly thicker in the NAION eyes than in the control eyes. The average peripapillary RNFL, macular RNFL, and ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) showed reductions in thickness within 2-5 months (peripapillary RNFL: -19.8 μm/month, p < 0.001, macular RNFL: -14.5 μm/month, p < 0.001, GCIPL: -26.8 μm/month, p < 0.001). The change of thickness in temporal and superior peripapillary RNFL, GCIPL, inner nuclear layer (INL), and ONL by 2-5 months was associated with the final visual field results (p = 0.018, p < 0.001, p = 0.040, p = 0.020, and p = 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The peripapillary RNFL swelling initially observed started to decrease within 2-5 months along with macular RNFL and GCIPL thinning. The rate of thickness changes in the peripapillary RNFL, GCIPL, INL, and ONL by 2-5 months was associated with visual field outcomes.

Abstract
Objective Effective suicide prevention for at-risk adolescents requires increased access to medical treatment. Investigating the unique characteristics of suicide in this vulnerable at-risk non-referred sample can contribute to establishing effective suicide prevention policies. This study aimed to (a) examine at-risk non-referred adolescents’ suicide attempt rate, (b) investigate influential multilevel factors in predicting these adolescents’ suicide attempts, and (c) compare the results of (a) and (b) by gender. Methods A total of 401 samples (216 boys and 185 girls) were recruited through a school-based mental health project for at-risk adolescents. Multivariate hierarchical logistic regression analyses were performed at the individual-, contextual-, and protective levels to evaluate three multilevel models as well as to investigate predictabilities for the overall group and by gender. Results The suicide attempt rate of the overall sample was 29.4% (boys: 18.1%, girls: 42.7%), which was significantly higher than that of community samples. For boys, individual-level predictors (depression and conduct problems) had the most significant contribution in predicting suicide attempts. In contrast, for girls, protective-level predictors (family satisfaction) contributed the most to the prediction of suicide attempts, followed by contextual-level predictors (academic grades). Conclusion This study is an important step in understanding the unique characteristics of at-risk non-referred adolescents who have not yet been considered in mental health policies. Improving medical accessibility will be the first step in establishing effective suicide prevention policies for these vulnerable samples.

Abstract
Candida albicans, a major opportunistic fungal pathogen, is frequently found together with Streptococcus mutans in dental biofilms associated with severe childhood caries (tooth decay), a prevalent pediatric oral disease. However, the impact of this cross-kingdom relationship on C. albicans remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we employed a novel quantitative proteomics approach in conjunction with transcriptomic profiling to unravel molecular pathways of C. albicans when cocultured with S. mutans in mixed biofilms. RNA sequencing and iTRAQ (isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation)-based quantitative proteomics revealed that C. albicans genes and proteins associated with carbohydrate metabolism were significantly enhanced, including sugar transport, aerobic respiration, pyruvate breakdown, and the glyoxylate cycle. Other C. albicans genes and proteins directly and indirectly related to cell morphogenesis and cell wall components such as mannan and glucan were also upregulated, indicating enhanced fungal activity in mixed-species biofilm. Further analyses revealed that S. mutans-derived exoenzyme glucosyltransferase B (GtfB), which binds to the fungal cell surface to promote coadhesion, can break down sucrose into glucose and fructose that can be readily metabolized by C. albicans, enhancing growth and acid production. Altogether, we identified key pathways used by C. albicans in the mixed biofilm, indicating an active fungal role in the sugar metabolism and environmental acidification (key virulence traits associated with caries onset) when interacting with S. mutans, and a new cross-feeding mechanism mediated by GtfB that enhances C. albicans carbohydrate utilization. In addition, we demonstrate that comprehensive transcriptomics and quantitative proteomics can be powerful tools to study microbial contributions which remain underexplored in cross-kingdom biofilms.

Abstract
Sorafenib has emerged as an effective therapeutic option for radioactive iodine (RAI)-refractory, locally advanced or metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). We investigated the efficacy and safety of sorafenib treatment in a real-world setting and unveil predictive markers of responsiveness to sorafenib. The treatment response, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival, and adverse events (AEs) of sorafenib-treated RAI-refractory, locally advanced or metastatic DTC patients at three institutes were retrospectively reviewed, and their tumor doubling time was calculated by three investigators. Total eighty-five patients were treated with sorafenib, and seven patients discontinued sorafenib due to AEs before the first tumor assessment. The median PFS was 14.4 months, and the objective response rate was 10.3% in 78 patients who were able to evaluate the tumor response. Age, sex, histologic type, tumor location, RAI avidity, or the presence of FDG-PET uptake did not affect PFS. However, smaller tumor size (≤1.5 cm) of the target lesions in lung showed better PFS (hazard ratio [HR] 0.39, p = 0.01), and tumors with the shortest doubling time (≤6 months) had worse outcome (HR 2.70, p < 0.01). Because of AEs, dose reductions or drug interruptions were required in 64% of patients, and eventually, 23% of patients discontinued sorafenib permanently. The most common AE was hand-foot skin reaction (HFSR). Patients with severe HFSR showed better PFS, but there were no statistical significance (HR 0.65, p = 0.05). In conclusion, small tumor size and long doubling time of each target lesion can be a prognostic marker to predict the responsiveness to sorafenib in RAI-refractory DTC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immunotoxins consisting of a toxin from bacteria or plants and a targeting module have been developed as potent anti-cancer therapeutics. The majority of them, especially those in preclinical or clinical testing stages, are fusion proteins of a toxin and antibody fragment. Immunotoxins based on full-length antibodies are less studied, even though the fragment crystallizable (Fc) domain plays an important role in regulating the concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the serum and in antibody-mediated immune responses against pathogens. RESULTS We devised a method to site-specifically conjugate IgG and another protein using a cysteine residue introduced into the IgG and a bio-orthogonally reactive unnatural amino acid incorporated into the other protein. The human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her2)-targeting IgG, trastuzumab, was engineered to have an unpaired cysteine in the heavy chain, and an unnatural amino acid with the azido group was incorporated into an engineered Pseudomonas exotoxin A (PE24). The two protein molecules were conjugated site-specifically using a bifunctional linker having dibenzocyclooctyne and maleimide groups. Binding to Her2 and interaction with various Fc receptors of trastuzumab were not affected by the conjugation with PE24. The trastuzumab-PE24 conjugate was cytotoxic to Her2-overexpressing cell lines, which involved the inhibition of cellular protein synthesis due to the modification of elongation factor-2. CONCLUSIONS We constructed the site-specifically conjugated immunotoxin based on IgG and PE24, which induced target-specific cytotoxicity. To evaluate the molecule as a cancer therapeutic, animal studies are planned to assess tumor regression, half-life in blood, and in vivo immunogenicity. In addition, we expect that the site-specific conjugation method can be used to develop other antibody-protein conjugates for applications in therapeutics and diagnostics.

Abstract
Regulating protein import across the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane occasionally results in the synthesis of topologically unnatural variants, and their accumulation often leads to proteotoxicity. However, since this is a regulated process, it is questionable whether the topological rearrangement really has adverse consequences. In the present study, we provide an insight into the functional benefit of translocational regulation by illustrating mutant-selective topologic conversion (MSTC) and demonstrate that MSTC contributes to selective degradation of a membrane-anchored prion protein isoform (ctmPrP). We find that ctmPrP is inherently short-lived and topologically competent for degradation rather than accumulation. MSTC achieves, cotranslationally, the unique topology of ctmPrP during translocation, facilitating selective ctmPrP degradation from the ER via the proteasome-dependent pathway before entering the secretory pathway. At this time, the N-terminal polycationic cluster is essential for MSTC, and its cytosolic exposure acquires “ERAD-degron”-like activity for ctmPrP. Bypassing MSTC delays ctmPrP degradation, thus increasing prion proteotoxicity. Thus, topological rearrangement is used for the MSTC as a part of the protein quality control pathway to ensure the safety of the secretory pathway from misfolded PrP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to compare the clinical outcomes of laparoscopic posterior retroperitoneal adrenalectomy (LPRA) and robotic posterior retroperitoneal adrenalectomy (RPRA) and determine the differences that could affect the outcomes. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 230 adrenalectomy cases from 2014 to 2017. There were 169 LPRA and 61 RPRA cases, and their clinicopathological features and surgical outcomes were compared. RESULTS In LPRA, there was a positive relationship between operation time and male gender, early period of experience, adrenal tumor size, and pheochromocytoma. In RPRA, adrenal tumor size and pheochromocytoma were the factors affecting the operation time. When the adrenal tumor size was ≤5.5 cm, the operation time of LPRA was shorter than that of RPRA (p=0.001). When the tumor size was >5.5 cm, there was no significant difference in the operation times of LPRA and RPRA (p=0.102). CONCLUSIONS RPRA is a feasible and technically safe approach for benign adrenal diseases. The use of RPRA could benefit patients and provide comfort by overcoming the factors contributing to a longer operation time in the laparoscopic technique, such as male gender and high BMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The trends in pediatric patients having thyroid nodules have not been well evaluated. Here, we analyzed the clinicopathological features of the children who have presented with thyroid nodules at our center over several decades in order to determine a change of trend. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed 215 pediatric patients who had undergone a thyroidectomy between 1990 and 2014 at our single tertiary center. The clinicopathological features were analyzed according to age, sex, and the year of diagnosis. RESULTS The most common reason for hospital admission was a palpable anterior neck mass (76.7%). The males in the patient cohort were younger than the females (13 vs. 15 years old, p < 0.05). The female patients increased from 50.0% to 83.0% with age (p < 0.05). The rate of malignancy did not increase with age (p < 0.05). However, the malignancy rate was higher in the more recently seen patients (23.8% during the early study period and 86.8% in the late study period; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Following a thyroidectomy in children with thyroid nodules, there was no change in the rate of detection of thyroid cancer over time with age, although the detected frequency of malignancy has increased in more recent patients. Therefore, early thyroid nodule detection for malignant screening is likely to be required for pediatric patients in the near future.

Abstract
: Although cancer stem cells (CSC) are thought to be responsible for tumor recurrence and resistance to chemotherapy, CSC-related research and drug development have been hampered by the limited supply of diverse, patient-derived CSC. Here, we present a functional polymer thin film (PTF) platform that promotes conversion of cancer cells to highly tumorigenic three-dimensional (3D) spheroids without the use of biochemical or genetic manipulations. Culturing various human cancer cells on the specific PTF, poly(2,4,6,8-tetravinyl-2,4,6,8-tetramethyl cyclotetrasiloxane) (pV4D4), gave rise to numerous multicellular tumor spheroids within 24 hours with high efficiency and reproducibility. Cancer cells in the resulting spheroids showed a significant increase in the expression of CSC-associated genes and acquired increased drug resistance compared with two-dimensional monolayer-cultured controls. These spheroids also exhibited enhanced xenograft tumor-forming ability and metastatic capacity in nude mice. By enabling the generation of tumorigenic spheroids from diverse cancer cells, the surface platform described here harbors the potential to contribute to CSC-related basic research and drug development. SIGNIFICANCE: A new cell culture technology enables highly tumorigenic 3D spheroids to be easily generated from various cancer cell sources in the common laboratory.

Abstract
Conjugation of antibody has expanded its applications in therapeutics and diagnostics, and various methods have been developed based on chemical or enzymatic reactions. However, the majority of them have focused on synthetic molecules such as small molecules, nucleic acids, or synthetic materials, but site-specific conjugation of antibody with protein cargo has rarely been demonstrated. In this Communication, we report a PEptide-DIrected Photo-cross-linking (PEDIP) reaction for site-specific conjugation of IgG with protein using an Fc-binding peptide and a photoreactive amino acid analogue, and demonstrate this method by developing an immunotoxin composed of a Her2-targeting IgG (trastuzumab) and an engineered Pseudomonas exotoxin A (PE24). The ADP-ribosylation of eukaryotic elongation factor-2 by the bacterial toxin inhibits the ribosomal translation of protein, and the trastuzumab-PE24 conjugate exhibited the cytotoxicity toward Her2-overexpressing cell lines. The PEDIP reaction can also be applied for many other types of cargo with slight modifications of the method.

Abstract
Numerous depth extraction techniques have been proposed in the past. However, the utility of these techniques is limited as they typically require multiple imaging units, bulky platforms for computation, cannot achieve high speed and are computationally expensive. To counter the above challenges, a sensor with Offset Pixel Apertures (OPA) has been recently proposed. However, a working system for depth extraction with the OPA sensor has not been discussed. In this paper, we propose the first such system for depth extraction using the OPA sensor. We also propose a dedicated hardware implementation for the proposed system, named as the Depth Map Processor (DMP). The DMP can provide depth at 30 frames per second at 1920 × 1080 resolution with 31 disparity levels. Furthermore, the proposed DMP has low power consumption as for the aforementioned speed and resolution it only requires 290.76 mW. The proposed system makes it an ideal choice for depth extraction systems in constrained environments.

Abstract
Purpose Patients often complain of change of defecation pattern and it is necessary to quantify their symptoms. To quantify symptoms, use of questionnaire is ideal, so we adopted a simple and easily writable visual analogue scale for irritable bowel syndrome questionnaire (VAS-IBS). The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Korean version of VAS-IBS questionnaire (Korean VAS-IBS) that can adequately reflect the defecation pattern. Methods This study translated English VAS-IBS into Korean using the forward-and-back translation method. Korean VAS-IBS was performed on 30 patients, who visited the outpatient clinic and had no possibility of special defecation pattern. Detailed past medical history and Bristol stool chart was added to the questionnaire. The survey was conducted twice, and the median interval between the 2 surveys was 10 days (8–11 days). Cronbach α for internal consistency reliability and intraclass correlation coefficients for test-retest reliability were analyzed. Results Korean VAS-IBS achieved acceptable homogeneity with a Cronbach α coefficient of 0.66–0.79 showing adequate internal consistency reliability. In addition, intraclass correlation coefficients showed significant test-retest reliability with 0.46–0.80 except for the question assessing the “perception of psychological wellbeing.” Conclusion The Korean VAS-IBS is a valid and reliable questionnaire for the measurement of the symptoms of defecation pattern changes.

Abstract
In this paper, we examine a real-world case related to the consumer product supply chain to analyze the value of supply chain coordination under the condition of moral hazard. Because of the characteristics of a buyback contract scheme employed in the supply chain, the supplier company’s sales department encourages retailers to order more inventory to meet their sales target, whereas retailers pay less attention to their inventory level and leftovers at the end of the season. This condition induces moral hazard problems in the operation of the supply chain, as suppliers suffer from huge returns of leftover inventory. This, in turn, is related to the obsolescence of returned inventory, even with penalty terms in the contract for the return of any leftovers. In this study, we show under the current buyback-based supply chain operation, the inventory levels of both the supplier and retailers exceed customer demand and develop vendor-managed inventory (VMI) system with base stock policy to remove any mismatch of supply and demand. A comparison of both systems shows that through the proper coordination of supply chain operations, both suppliers and retailers can gain additional benefits while providing proper services to end customers.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop Korean versions of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network/Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (NCCN-FACT) Ovarian Symptom Index-18 (NFOSI-18) and FACT/Gynecologic Oncology Group (FACT-GOG) Neurotoxicity 4-item (NTX-4), evaluating their reliability and reproducibility. Materials and Methods In converting NFOSI-18 and NTX-4, the following steps were performed: forward translation, backward translation, expert review, pretest of preliminary format, and finalization of Korean versions (K-NFOSI-18 and K-NTX-4). Patients were enrolled from six institutions where each had completed chemotherapy for ovarian, tubal, or peritoneal cancer at least 1 month earlier. In addition to demographics obtained by questionnaire, all subjects were assessed via K-NFOSI-18, K-NTX-4, and a Korean version of the EuroQoL-5 Dimension. Internal structural validity and reliability were evaluated using item internal consistency, item discriminant validity, and Cronbach's α. To evaluate test-retest reliability, K-NFOSI-18 and K-NTX-4 were readministered after 7-21 days, and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated. Results Of the 250 women enrolled during the 3-month recruitment period, 13 withdrew or did not respond, leaving 237 (94.8%) for the analyses. Mean patient age was 54.3±10.8 years. Re-testing was performed in 190 patients (80.2%). The total K-NFOSI-18 and K-NTX-4 scores were 49 (range, 20 to 72) and 9 (range, 0 to 16), respectively, with high reliability (Cronbach's α=0.84 and 0.89, respectively) and reproducibility (ICC=0.77 and 0.84, respectively) achieved in retesting. Conclusion Both NFOSI-18 and NTX-4 were successfully developed in Korean with minimal modification. Each Korean version showed high internal consistency and reproducibility.

Abstract
AIMS This study investigated the association of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), an emerging new risk factor for type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, with the presence of opposite phenotypes of glucose and lipid metabolism among normal-weight Koreans of similar body composition. METHODS Fifty subjects, randomly selected from an ongoing community-based cohort study, from two opposite phenotype groups - metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUHNW) and metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW) - were matched for waist circumference, visceral fat mass and demographic variables, then compared for serum concentrations of POPs. RESULTS Most POPs (10 out of 13 compounds) were present in higher serum concentrations in the MUHNW than in the MHNW. In particular, serum concentrations of all compounds of the organochlorine pesticide class were 2.2 to 4.7 times higher in cases than in controls. Compared with the lowest tertile of summary measures of POPs, Odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for the second and third tertiles were 7.4 (1.9-29.4) and 10.4 (2.6-41.2), respectively. Adjusting for possible confounders did not change the results. CONCLUSION Taken altogether, these findings from the present and previous studies suggest that increased serum POP concentrations may play an important role in the development of unhealthy metabolic phenotypes in lean people.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many studies have compared different methods of postoperative pain management in abdominal laparotomy patients; however, the conclusions have been inconsistent and controversial. This study aimed to compare the pain scores and complications of patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer and used either patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) or patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCA) for postoperative pain management. We hypothesized that PCEA would be superior to PCA for postoperative pain management in ovarian cancer surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS The medical records of women who underwent ovarian cancer surgery in 2014 were reviewed retrospectively. Pain scores for postoperative days (PODs) 0 to 5 days and the incidence of complications were examined and compared in patients who received PCEA and PCA. Means were compared using an independent sample t test or Wilcoxon rank sum test, and proportions were compared using Fisher exact test or a χ(2) test at each time point. A mixed-effects model was applied to determine correlations among repeated measurements. A P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Of the 105 study patients, 38 received PCEA and 67 received PCA. Pain scores were significantly lower in the PCEA group than the PCA group at POD 0 (2.47 ± 1.75 vs 4.39 ± 1.17; P < 0.001), 1 (2.65 ± 1.02 vs 3.32 ± 1.09; P < 0.001), and 3 (2.17 ± 1.13 vs 2.79 ± 1.08; P = 0.011), and tended to be lower in the PCEA group at PODs 2, 4, and 5. Patient-controlled epidural analgesia provided significantly better pain relief as analyzed by a mixed-effect model. Complications were not significantly different between both groups. There was no significant difference in pain relief between both groups at PODs 4 and 5. CONCLUSIONS Patient-controlled epidural analgesia was more effective for postoperative pain management compared with PCA from POD 0 to POD 3 in patients with ovarian cancer who underwent cytoreductive surgery, without increasing the morbidity.

Abstract
We fabricated C-doped (1.5 wt.%) In3Sb1Te2 (CIST) thin films with amorphous phase (a-CIST) using a sputter method. Two electrical-phase-changes at 250 and 275 °C were observed in the sheet resistance measurement. In order to understand the origin of these electrical-phase-changes, all samples were characterized by XRD, TEM, and HRXPS with synchrotron radiation. In a-CIST, only weak Sb-C bonding was observed. In the first electrical-phase-change at 250 °C, strong Sb-C bonding occurred without an accompanying structural/phase change (still amorphous). On the other hand, the second electrical-phase-change at 275 °C was due to the structural/phase change from amorphous to crystalline without a chemical state change.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the role of PIN1 on the hepatic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) and its signaling pathway, as well as the potential therapeutic effects of hDPSC transplantation and PIN1 inhibition on CCl4 (carbon tetrachloride)-induced liver fibrosis in mice. The in vitro results showed that hepatic differentiation was suppressed by infection with adenovirus-PIN1 and promoted by PIN1 inhibitor juglone via the downregulation of Wnt3a and β-catenin. Compared with treatment with either hDPSC transplantation or juglone alone, the combination of hDPSCs and juglone into CCl4-injured mice significantly suppressed liver fibrosis and restored serum levels of alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and ammonia. Collectively, the present study shows for the first time that PIN1 inhibition promotes hepatic differentiation of hDPSCs through the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Furthermore, juglone in combination with hDPSC transplantation effectively treats liver fibrosis, suggesting that hDPSC transplantation with PIN1 inhibition may be a novel therapeutic candidate for the treatment of liver injury.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the oncologic safety of robot thyroid surgery compared to open thyroid surgery for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We enrolled 722 patients with PTC who underwent a total thyroidectomy with central compartment node dissection (CCND) from January 2009 to December 2010. These patients were classified into open thyroid surgery (n = 610) or robot thyroid surgery (n = 112) groups. We verified the impact of robot thyroid surgery on clinical recurrence and ablation/control-stimulated thyroglobulin (sTg) levels predictive of non-recurrence using weighted logistic regression models with inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). Age, sex, thyroid weight, extent of CCND, and TNM were significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.05); however, there was no significant difference in recurrence between the open and robot groups (1.5% vs. 2.7%; p = 0.608). The proportion of patients with ablation sTg < 10.0 ng/mL and control sTg < 1.0 ng/mL was comparable between the two groups (p > 0.05). Logistic regression with IPTW using the propensity scores estimated by adjusting all of the parameters demonstrated that robot thyroid surgery did not influence the clinical recurrence (OR; 0.784, 95% CI; 0.150-3.403, p = 0.750), ablation sTg (OR; 0.950, 95% CI; 0.361-2.399, p = 0.914), and control sTg levels (OR; 0.498, 95% CI; 0.190-1.189, p = 0.130). Robot thyroid surgery is comparable to open thyroid surgery with regard to oncologic safety in PTC patients.

Abstract
Providers have expressed a strong desire to have additional clinical decision-support tools to help with interpretation of pharmacogenomic results. We developed and tested a novel disease-drug association tool that enables pharmacogenomic-based prescribing to treat common diseases. First, 324 drugs were mapped to 484 distinct diseases (mean number of drugs treating each disease was 4.9; range 1-37). Then the disease-drug association tool was pharmacogenomically annotated, with an average of 1.8 pharmacogenomically annotated drugs associated/disease. Applying this tool to a prospectively enrolled >1,000 patient cohort from a tertiary medical center showed that 90% of the top ∼20 diseases in this population and ≥93% of patients could appropriately be treated with ≥1 medication with actionable pharmacogenomic information. When combined with clinical patient genotypes, this tool permits delivery of patient-specific pharmacogenomically informed disease treatment recommendations to inform the treatment of many medical conditions of the US population, a key initial step towards implementation of precision medicine.

BACKGROUND This study evaluated the impact of lymph node-related factors on the risk of and site of recurrence in patients who had papillary thyroid carcinoma with lymph node metastasis in the lateral compartment (classified as pN1b). METHODS Patients underwent total thyroidectomy with unilateral modified radical neck dissection for classical papillary thyroid carcinoma. Risk factors for recurrence were evaluated according to the pattern of recurrence. RESULTS A total of 324 patients were included in the study. The median follow-up was 63 (range 14-181) months. Recurrence was detected in 47 patients (14·5 per cent). In the multivariable analysis, a maximum diameter of metastatic lymph nodes larger than 2·0 cm (hazard ratio (HR) 1·15, 95 per cent c.i. 1·06 to 1·25; P = 0·033) and a central compartment metastatic lymph node ratio of more than 0·42 (HR 3·35, 1·65 to 6·79; P < 0·001) were identified as independent risk factors for locoregional recurrence. Age 45 years or older (HR 5·69, 1·24 to 26·12; P = 0·025) and extranodal extension of metastasis (HR 12·71, 1·64 to 98·25; P = 0·015) were risk factors for distant metastasis. In subgroup analysis of locoregional recurrence, several lymph node-related factors affected the risk of recurrence according to the specific site of metastasis. CONCLUSION Lymph node-related factors are of importance for the risk of recurrence in patients with classical papillary thyroid carcinoma classified as pN1b.

Abstract
Methods to identify Pinelliae Tuber and Arisaematis Rhizoma are required because of frequent reciprocal substitution between these two herbal medicines and the existence of several closely related plant materials. As a result of the morphological similarity of dried tubers, correct discrimination of authentic herbal medicines is difficult by conventional methods. Therefore, we analyzed DNA barcode sequences to identify each herbal medicine and the common adulterants at a species level. To verify the identity of these herbal medicines, we collected five authentic species (Pinellia ternata for Pinelliae Tuber, and Arisaema amurense, A. amurense var. serratum, A. erubescens, and A. heterophyllum for Arisaematis Rhizoma) and six common adulterant plant species. Maturase K (matK) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit (rbcL) genes were then amplified using universal primers. In comparative analyses of two DNA barcode sequences, we obtained 45 species-specific nucleotides sufficient to identify each species (except A. erubescens with matK) and 28 marker nucleotides for each species (except P. pedatisecta with rbcL). Sequence differences at corresponding positions of the two combined DNA barcodes provided genetic marker nucleotides that could be used to identify specimens of the correct species among the analyzed medicinal plants. Furthermore, we generated a phylogenetic tree showing nine distinct groups depending on the species. These results can be used to authenticate Pinelliae Tuber and Arisaematis Rhizoma from their adulterants and to identify each species. Thus, comparative analyses of plant DNA barcode sequences identified useful genetic markers for the authentication of Pinelliae Tuber and Arisaematis Rhizoma from several adulterant herbal materials.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study is to compare quality of life (QoL) and sexual functioning between sexually active cervical cancer survivors and healthy women. Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional study, propensity-score-matched cervical cancer survivors (n=104) and healthy women (n=104) were compared. All women had engaged in sexual activity within the previous 3 months, and cervical cancer survivors showed no evidence of disease after primary treatment. QoL and sexual functioning were assessed using three questionnaires; the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30), Cervical Cancer Module (EORTC QLQ-CX24), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Results Significantly higher scores for lymphedema were observed in the cervical cancer survivors group compared with the healthy women group (mean, 20.2 vs. 12.2; p < 0.05). Sexuality, both in terms of sexual activity, sexual enjoyment, and sexual worry (EORTC QLQ-CX24), and in terms of desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain (FSFI) were similar between the groups. When the scale of sexual/vaginal functioning in EORTC QLQ-CX24 was divided into individual questions, cervical cancer survivors reported shorter vaginal length than the control group, but without statistical significance (mean, 80.6 vs. 85.4; p=0.077). Conclusion Compared with healthy women, sexuality was not impaired in cervical cancer survivors who showed no evidence of disease after primary treatment and engaging in sexual activity. Further prospective cohort studies are warranted to confirm this finding.

Abstract
The number of octapeptide repeats has been considered to correlate with clinical and pathogenic phenotypes of prion diseases resulting from aberrant metabolism of prion protein (PrP). However, it is still poorly understood how this motif affects PrP metabolism. Here, we discover homozygous single octapeptide repeat deletion mutation in the PRNP gene encoding PrP in HeLa cells. The level of PrP proves to be unaffected by this mutation alone, but selectively reduced by additional pathogenic mutations within internal hydrophobic region of PrP. The pattern and relative amount of newly synthesized A117V mutant is unaffected, whereas the mutant appears to be differentially distributed and processed on the cell surface by single octapeptide deletion. This study provides an insight into a novel mutant-specific metabolism of PrP on the cell surface.

Abstract
PURPOSE We assessed medication nonadherence, categorized as intentional or unintentional, and related factors in elderly patients with hypertension, correlating the data with measurement of blood pressure as the final target of medication adherence and other possible influencing factors, such as lifestyle. PATIENTS AND METHODS Subjects were aged ≥65 years, resided in a rural area, and were taking antihypertensive drugs. The survey was conducted in July 2014. Participants were divided into the following three groups: "Adherence", "Unintentional nonadherence", and "Intentional nonadherence". Individual cognitive components, such as necessity and concern as well as self-efficacy and other related factors, were compared according to adherence groups. The interrelationships between those factors and nonadherence were tested using structural equation modeling analysis. RESULTS Of the 401 subjects, 182 (45.6%) were in the adherence group, 107 (26.7%) in the unintentional nonadherence group, and 112 (27.9%) in the intentional nonadherence group. Necessity and self-efficacy were found to have a significant direct influence on unintentional nonadherence behaviors (necessity β=-0.171, P=0.019; self-efficacy β=-0.433, P<0.001); concern was not statistically significant (β=-0.009, P=0.909). Necessity was found to have significant direct and indirect impact on intentional nonadherence (direct β=-0.275, P=0.002; indirect β=-0.113, P=0.036). Self-efficacy had no significant direct effect on intentional nonadherence though it had the only significant indirect effect on intentional nonadherence (direct β=-0.055, P=0.515; indirect β=-0.286, P<0.001). Concern had no significant influence on intentional or on unintentional nonadherence (direct β=0.132 0.132, P=0.151; indirect β=-0.006, P=0.909). CONCLUSION Unintentional nonadherence should be regularly monitored and managed because of its potential prognostic significance. Interventions addressing cognitive factors, such as beliefs about medicine or self-efficacy, are relatively difficult to implement, but are essential to improve medication adherence.
