Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer (LC) is an important comorbidity of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and has a poor prognosis. The clinical characteristics and outcome of each ILD subtype in LC patients have not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the difference between idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and non-IPF ILD as well as prognostic factors in patients with ILD-LC. METHODS The medical records of 163 patients diagnosed with ILD-LC at Asan Medical Center from January 2018 to May 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared between the IPF-LC and non-IPF ILD-LC groups, and prognostic factors were analyzed using the Cox proportional-hazard model. RESULTS The median follow-up period was 11 months after the cancer diagnosis. No statistically significant differences were observed in clinical characteristics and mortality rates (median survival: 26 vs. 20 months, p = 0.530) between the groups. The independent prognostic factors in patients with ILD-LC were higher level of Krebs von den Lungen-6 (≥ 1000 U/mL, hazard ratio [HR] 1.970, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.026-3.783, p = 0.025) and advanced clinical stage of LC (compared with stage I, HR 3.876 for stage II, p = 0.025, HR 5.092 for stage III, p = 0.002, and HR 5.626 for stage IV, p = 0.002). In terms of treatment, surgery was the significant factor for survival (HR 0.235; 95% CI 0.106-0.520; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS No survival difference was observed between IPF-LC and non-IPF ILD-LC patients. A higher level of Krebs von den Lungen-6 may act as a prognostic marker in ILD-LC patients.

Abstract
We investigated the association of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use with the risk of stroke and ischemic heart disease (IHD). The Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening cohort from 2002 to 2003, the participants of which were followed up until 2019, was used. In study I, 45,905 participants who were diagnosed with stroke were matched with 91,810 control I participants. The history of PPI medication was examined. In study II, 40,928 participants who were diagnosed with IHD were matched with 81,856 control II participants. In both study I and study II, the previous history of PPI medication was examined. A propensity score overlap-weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate the overlap-weighted odds ratios (ORs) of PPI use for stroke (study I) and IHD (study II). Current PPI use was linked with higher odds for stroke in study I. The odds for stroke were higher in groups with a longer duration of PPI use (OR = 0.96 [95% CI = 0.92-1.00] < 1.55 [1.50-1.61] < 1.62 [1.57-1.68] for < 30 days, 30 to 180 days, and ≥180 days of PPI use). Previous PPI use was linked with higher odds for IHD in study II. The odds for stroke were higher in groups with a longer duration of PPI use (OR = 1.13 [95% CI = 1.08-1.18] < 2.12 [2.04-2.21] < 2.60 [2.51-2.69] for <30 days, 30 to 180 days, and ≥180 days of PPI use). Current PPI medication is associated with a high risk of stroke and IHD. A longer duration of PPI medication was related to a higher risk of stroke and IHD. However, a prior history of PPI medication was not linked with a high risk of stroke or IHD.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a progressive loss of muscle mass and strength that is associated with increasing the risk of falls, musculoskeletal diseases, and chronic metabolic diseases. However, the animal models adopted to study sarcopenia face limitations since the functional tests conducted on human cannot be directly adapted to animals because the animals do not follow instructions. Moreover, current preclinical research tools for muscle function assessment, such as the rotarod, grip strength, and treadmill, have limitations, including low-intensity simple movements, evaluator subjectivity, and limited power indicators. Hence, in this study, we present a new jumping-power assessment tool in a preclinical rodent model to demonstrate muscle functions. To overcome the light weight and command issues in the rodent model, we developed an electrical stimulation-assisted jump power assessment device. Precisely, the device utilizes a load cell with a 0.1 g resolution and a 50 points/s data acquisition rate to capture the short period of the mouse jump. Additionally, interdigitated electrodes are used to electrically stimulate the mice and make them jump. While our primary focus in this article is the validation of the newly developed jump power assessment device, it is worth noting that this tool has several potential utilities. These include the phenotypic comparison of sarcopenia models, the exploration of muscle function reduction mechanisms, muscle function-related blood biomarkers, and the evaluation of drug intervention effects.

Abstract
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have the potential to produce solar energy at a low cost, with flexibility, and high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, there are still challenges to be addressed before mass production of PSCs, such as prevention from degradation under external stresses and the uniform, large-area formation of all layers. Among them, the most challenging aspect of mass production of PSCs is creating a high-quality perovskite layer using environmentally sustainable processes that are compatible with industry standards. In this review, we briefly introduce the recent progresses upon eco-friendly perovskite solutions/antisolvents and film formation processes. The eco-friendly production methods are categorized into two: (1) employing environmentally friendly solvents for perovskite precursor ink/solution, and (2) replacing harmful, volatile antisolvents or even limiting their use during the perovskite film formation process. General considerations and criteria for each category are provided, and detailed examples are presented, specifically focused on the works have done since 2021. In addition, the importance of controlling the crystallization behavior of the perovskite layer is highlighted to develop antisolvent-free perovskite formation methods.

Abstract
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production is an emerging technology that uses renewable solar light aimed to establish a sustainable carbon-neutral society. The barriers to commercialization are low efficiency and high cost. To date, researchers have focused on materials and systems. However, recent studies have been conducted to utilize thermal effects in PEC hydrogen production. This Review provides a fresh perspective to utilize the thermal effects for PEC performance enhancement while delineating the underlying principles and equations associated with efficiency. The fundamentals of the thermal effect on the PEC system are summarized from various perspectives: kinetics, thermodynamics, and empirical equations. Based on this, materials are classified as plasmonic metals, quantum dot-based semiconductors, and photothermal organic materials, which have an inherent response to photothermal irradiation. Finally, the economic viability and challenges of these strategies for PEC are explained, which can pave the way for the future progress in the field.

Abstract
The association between oral microbiota and cancer development has been a topic of intense research in recent years, with compelling evidence suggesting that the oral microbiome may play a significant role in cancer initiation and progression. However, the causal connections between the two remain a subject of debate, and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. In this case-control study, we aimed to identify common oral microbiota associated with several cancer types and investigate the potential mechanisms that may trigger immune responses and initiate cancer upon cytokine secretion. Saliva and blood samples were collected from 309 adult cancer patients and 745 healthy controls to analyze the oral microbiome and the mechanisms involved in cancer initiation. Machine learning techniques revealed that six bacterial genera were associated with cancer. The abundance of Leuconostoc, Streptococcus, Abiotrophia, and Prevotella was reduced in the cancer group, while abundance of Haemophilus and Neisseria enhanced. G protein-coupled receptor kinase, H+-transporting ATPase, and futalosine hydrolase were found significantly enriched in the cancer group. Total short-chain fatty acid (SCFAs) concentrations and free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2) expression levels were greater in the control group when compared with the cancer group, while serum tumor necrosis factor alpha induced protein 8 (TNFAIP8), interleukin-6 (IL6), and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) levels were higher in the cancer group when compared with the control group. These results suggested that the alterations in the composition of oral microbiota can contribute to a reduction in SCFAs and FFAR2 expression that may initiate an inflammatory response through the upregulation of TNFAIP8 and the IL-6/STAT3 pathway, which could ultimately increase the risk of cancer onset.

Abstract
Leptin, an adipose tissue-derived hormone, exhibits potent tumor promoting effects through various mechanisms. Cathepsin B, a member of the lysosomal cysteine proteases, has been shown to modulate the growth of cancer cells. In this study, we have investigated the role of cathepsin B signaling in leptin-induced hepatic cancer growth. Leptin treatment caused significant increase in the levels of active cathepsin B through the axis of endoplasmic reticulum stress and autophagy induction without significant effects on pre- and pro-forms of cathepsin B. Interestingly, inhibition of cathepsin B signaling by gene silencing or treatment with a selective pharmacological inhibitor (CA-074) prevented leptin-enhanced viability of hepatic cancer cell and suppressed progression of cell cycle, indicating the critical role of cathepsin B in leptin-induced hepatic cancer growth. We have further observed that maturation of cathepsin B is required for NLRP3 inflammasomes activation, which is implicated in the growth of hepatic cancer cell. The crucial roles of cathepsin B maturation in leptin-induced hepatic cancer growth and NLRP3 inflammasomes activation were confirmed in an in vivo HepG2 tumor xenograft model. Taken together, these results demonstrate that cathepsin B signaling plays a pivotal role in leptin-induced hepatic cancer cell growth by activating NLRP3 inflammasomes.

Abstract
There is growing concern about a potential decline in empathy among medical students over time. Despite the importance of empathy toward patients in medicine, it remains unclear the nature of the changes in empathy among medical students. Thus, we systematically investigated affective and cognitive empathy for patients among medical students using neuroscientific approach. Nineteen medical students who completed their fifth-year medical curriculum and 23 age- and sex-matched nonmedical students participated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging study. Inside a brain scanner, all participants read empathy-eliciting scenarios while adopting either the patient or doctor perspective. Brain activation and self-reported ratings during the experience of empathy were obtained. Behavioral results indicated that all participants reported greater emotional negativity and empathic concern in association with the patient perspective condition than with the doctor perspective condition. Functional brain imaging results indicated that neural activity in the posterior superior temporal region implicated in goal-relevant attention reorienting was overall increased under the patient perspective than the doctor perspective condition. Relative to nonmedical students, medical students showed decreased activity in the temporoparietal region implicated in mentalizing under the patient perspective versus doctor perspective condition. Notably, this same region showed increased activity under the doctor versus patient condition in medical students relative to nonmedical students. This study is among the first to investigate the neural mechanisms of empathy among medical students and the current findings point to the cognitive empathy system as the locus of the primary brain differences associated with empathy toward patients.

Abstract
We assessed the feasibility and potential efficacy of a virtual reality (VR) environment using a dome screen as a distraction method in young children during intravenous (IV) placement in the pediatric emergency department. This randomized controlled pilot study enrolled children aged 2 to 6 years who underwent IV placement into either the intervention group or the control group. Children in the intervention group experienced VR using a dome screen during IV placement. The child’s pain intensity was measured using the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability (FLACC) scale at four time points of IV placement: immediately after arrival to the blood collection room (base); immediately after the child laid down on the bed (preparation); when the tourniquet was applied (tourniquet); and the moment at which the needle penetrated the skin (venipuncture). The guardian’s satisfaction and rating of the child’s distress were assessed using a 5-point Likert-type questionnaire. We recruited 19 children (9 in the intervention group and 10 in the control group). Five children in the control group were excluded from the analysis because of missing video recordings (n = 3), failed first attempt at IV placement (n = 1), and the child’s refusal to lie on the bed during the procedure (n = 1). No side effects of VR were reported during the study period. Although the average FLACC scale score at each time point (preparation, tourniquet, venipuncture) was lower in the intervention group than the control group, the difference was not statistically significant (2.3, interquartile range [IQR]: 2.0–3.0; vs. 3.3, IQR: 2.7–6.7, P = 0.255). There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in the guardian’s satisfaction and anxiety or his/her rating of the child’s pain and anxiety. The guardians and emergency medical technicians reported satisfaction with the use of VR with a dome screen and considered it a useful distraction during the procedure. VR using a dome screen is a feasible distraction method for young children during IV placement. A larger clinical trial with further development of the VR environment and study process is required to adequately evaluate the efficacy of VR using a dome screen.

Abstract
PURPOSE We sought to evaluate changes of mean peripapillary choroidal thickness (PCT) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) over 12 months in patients with unilateral central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). METHODS Our retrospective, observational study included 19 patients with treatment-naïve, unilateral CRVO who completed at least 12 months of follow-up period. Mean PCT and mean SFCT in CRVO-affected eyes and unaffected contralateral eyes were measured at each follow-up visit, and then compared. Differences between baseline and 12 months (ΔSFCT and ΔPCT) and percentage changes (ΔSFCT or ΔPCT/baseline×100%) were determined. We also investigated the predictive factors for visual outcome in the CRVO-affected eyes. RESULTS In the CRVO-affected eyes, mean PCT was 146.7±41.9 μm at baseline, and 106.5±24.2 μm at 12 months (P < 0.001). Mean PCT of the contralateral eyes was 129.8±42.6 μm at baseline and 124.6±39.7 μm at 12 months (P = 0.089). Mean SFCT of CRVO-affected eyes was 225.8±77.9 μm at baseline, and 199.4±66.6 μm at 12 months (P = 0.009). Mean SFCT of the contralateral eyes was 218.4±83.0 μm at baseline, and 208.4±78.1 μm at 12 months (P = 0.089). Δ PCT was -41.6±25.3 μm in the CRVO-affected eyes, and -5.2±5.8 μm in the contralateral eyes (P<0.001). % PCT was -24.9±14.0% in the CRVO-affected eyes, and -4.0±0.4% in the contralateral eyes (P = 0.001). Δ SFCT was -26.4±24.6 μm in the CRVO-affected eyes, and -9.5±16.7μm in the contralateral eyes (P = 0.016). % SFCT was -10.4±9.8% in the CRVO-affected eyes, and -3.4±6.4% in the contralateral eyes (P = 0.015). Among the various factors, BCVA at baseline (β = 0.797, P = 0.001) and % SFCT (β = 0.712, P = 0.001) were significantly associated with visual outcome at 12 months in the CRVO-affected eyes. CONCLUSION Both peripapillary and subfoveal choroidal thickness reduced significantly over 12 months in the CRVO-affected eyes, but not in the contralateral eyes. In addition, the absolute reduction amount and reduction ratio of PCT and SFCT were significantly greater in the CRVO-affected eyes than the contralateral eyes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant cancers worldwide, and liver cancer has increased in mortality due to liver cancer because it was detected at an advanced stages in patients with liver dysfunction, making HCC a lethal cancer. Accordingly, we aim to new targets for HCC drug discovery using HCC tumor spheroids. METHODS Our comparative proteomic analysis of HCC cells grown in culture as monolayers (2D) and spheroids (3D) revealed that argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1) expression was higher in 3D cells than in 2D cells due to upregulated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress responses. We investigated the clinical value of ASS1 in Korean patients with HCC. The mechanism underlying ASS1-mediated tumor suppression was investigated in HCC spheroids. ASS1-mediated improvement of chemotherapy efficiency was observed using high content screening in an HCC xenograft mouse model. RESULTS Studies of tumor tissue from Korean HCC patients showed that, although ASS1 expression was low in most samples, high levels of ASS1 were associated with favorable overall survival of patients. Here, we found that bidirectional interactions between ASS1 ER stress responses in HCC-derived multicellular tumor spheroids can limit HCC progression. ASS1 overexpression effectively inhibited tumor growth and enhanced the efficacy of in vitro and in vivo anti-HCC combination chemotherapy via activation of the PERK/eIF2α/ATF4/CHOP axis, but was not dependent on the status of p53 and arginine metabolism. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate the critical functional roles for the arginine metabolism-independent tumor suppressor activity of ASS1 in HCC and suggest that upregulating ASS1 in these tumors is a potential strategy in HCC cells with low ASS1 expression.

Abstract
Dopamine is a key neurotransmitter that plays essential roles in the central nervous system, including motor control, motivation, arousal, and reward. Thus, abnormal levels of dopamine directly cause several neurological diseases, including depressive disorders, addiction, and Parkinson's disease (PD). To develop a new technology to treat such diseases and disorders, especially PD, which is currently incurable, dopamine release from living cells intended for transplantation or drug screening must be precisely monitored and assessed. Owing to the advantages of miniaturisation and rapid detection, numerous electrical techniques have been reported, mostly in combination with various nanomaterials possessing specific nanoscale geometries. This review highlights recent advances in electrical biosensors for dopamine detection, with a particular focus on the use of various nanomaterials (e.g., carbon-based materials, hybrid gold nanostructures, metal oxides, and conductive polymers) on electrode surfaces to improve both sensor performance and biocompatibility. We conclude that this review will accelerate the development of electrical biosensors intended for the precise detection of metabolite release from living cells, which will ultimately lead to advances in therapeutic materials and techniques to cure various neurodegenerative disorders.

Abstract
Paclitaxel is a representative anticancer drug that induces chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), a common side effect that limits many anticancer chemotherapies. Although PINK1, a key mediator of mitochondrial quality control, has been shown to protect neuronal cells from various toxic treatments, the role of PINK1 in CIPN has not been investigated. Here, we examined the effect of PINK1 expression on CIPN using a recently established paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy model in Drosophila larvae. We found that the class IV dendritic arborization (C4da) sensory neuron-specific expression of PINK1 significantly ameliorated the paclitaxel-induced thermal hyperalgesia phenotype. In contrast, knockdown of PINK1 resulted in an increase in thermal hypersensitivity, suggesting a critical role for PINK1 in sensory neuron-mediated thermal nociceptive sensitivity. Interestingly, analysis of the C4da neuron morphology suggests that PINK1 expression alleviates paclitaxel-induced thermal hypersensitivity by means other than preventing alterations in sensory dendrites in C4da neurons. We found that paclitaxel induces mitochondrial dysfunction in C4da neurons and that PINK1 expression suppressed the paclitaxel-induced increase in mitophagy in C4da neurons. These results suggest that PINK1 mitigates paclitaxel-induced sensory dendrite alterations and restores mitochondrial homeostasis in C4da neurons and that improvement in mitochondrial quality control could be a promising strategy for the treatment of CIPN.

Abstract
Spectral ripple discrimination (SRD) has been widely used to evaluate the spectral resolution in cochlear implant (CI) recipients based on its strong correlation with speech perception performance. However, despite its usefulness for predicting speech perception outcomes, SRD performance exhibits large across-subject variabilities even among subjects implanted with the same CIs and sound processors. The potential factors of this observation include current spread, nerve survival, and CI mapping. Previous studies have found that the spectral resolution reduces with increasing distance of the stimulation electrode from the auditory nerve fibers (ANFs), attributable to increasing current spread. However, it remains unclear whether the spread of excitation is the only cause of the observation, or whether other factors such as temporal interaction also contribute to it. In this study, we used a computational model to investigate channel interaction upon non-simultaneous stimulation with respect to the electrode–ANF distance, and evaluated the SRD performance for five electrode–ANF distances. The SRD performance was determined based on the similarity between two neurograms in response to standard and inverted stimuli and used to evaluate the spectral resolution in the computational model. The spread of excitation was observed to increase with increasing electrode–ANF distance, consistent with previous findings. Additionally, the preceding pulses delivered from neighboring channels induced a channel interaction that either inhibited or facilitated the neural responses to subsequent pulses depending on the electrode–ANF distance. The SRD performance was also found to decrease with increasing electrode–ANF distance. The findings of this study suggest that variation of the neural responses (inhibition or facilitation) with the electrode–ANF distance in CI users may cause spectral smearing, and hence poor spectral resolution. A computational model such as that used in this study is a useful tool for understanding the neural factors related to CI outcomes, such as cannot be accomplished by behavioral studies alone.

Abstract
Strength measures should be normalized by body mass; however, the definition of sarcopenia includes only simple grip strength. Thus, we compared the relationship of grip strength and grip strength divided by body weight or body mass index to two major consequences of sarcopenia, namely metabolic syndrome and poor quality of life. Data from the participants (aged 60 years or older) of the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination were analyzed. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines with some modifications appropriate for Koreans. Quality of life was assessed using the EuroQoL Five-dimension questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association of grip strength and grip strength divided by body weight with metabolic syndrome and quality of life. A total of 1273 men and 1436 women were included in the analyses. Grip strength was not related to metabolic syndrome, whereas grip strength divided by body weight and grip strength normalized by body mass index revealed a dense dose-response relationship. All measures showed a similar correlation with quality of life. Grip strength divided by body weight can be superior to simple grip strength and grip strength normalized by body mass index in representing the metabolic aspects of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Background Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been emerged as one of the causes of acute recurrent or chronic hypertensive anterior uveitis in immunocompetent. In hypertensive anterior uveitis, human trabecular meshwork (TM) cells are considered a focus of inflammation. We investigated the effects of losartan, a selective angiotensin II receptor antagonist, on CMV infection in human TM cells. Methods Human TM cells were infected with CMV AD169. Virus infected and mock-infected cells were treated with losartan or dexamethasone or ganciclovir with or without transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1. Viral DNA accumulation and host cell response were analyzed using real-time PCR. Levels of secreted TGF-β1 were measured by determining its concentration in conditioned medium using a commercially available sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Results CMV infection significantly increased the concentrations of the secreted TGF-β1 at 3, 5, and 7 day post infection in TM cells. Treatment with dexamethasone or losartan significantly decreased the levels of TGF-β1, whereas treatment with ganciclovir did not affect TGF-β1 levels. TM cells treated with TGF-β1 along with the presence of losartan for 48 hours showed marked decrease in the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), lysyl oxidase (LOX), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), fibronectin and collagen-1A, compared with cells treated with TGF-β1 alone. CMV-infected TM cells stimulated by TGF-β1 significantly increased the expression of α-SMA and CTGF, which were attenuated by additional treatment with losartan. Conclusion Losartan inhibited the expression of TGF-β1 and fibrogenic molecules in human TM cells. Thus, losartan has the potential to decrease TM fibrosis in patients with CMV-induced hypertensive anterior uveitis.

Abstract
Chemicals interact with genes in the process of disease development and treatment. Although much biomedical research has been performed to understand relationships among genes, chemicals, and diseases, which have been reported in biomedical articles in Medline, there are few studies that extract disease-gene-chemical relationships from biomedical literature at a PubMed scale. In this study, we propose a deep learning model based on bidirectional long short-term memory to identify the evidence sentences of relationships among genes, chemicals, and diseases from Medline abstracts. Then, we develop the search engine DigChem to enable disease-gene-chemical relationship searches for 35,124 genes, 56,382 chemicals, and 5,675 diseases. We show that the identified relationships are reliable by comparing them with manual curation and existing databases. DigChem is available at http://gcancer.org/digchem.

Abstract
We present a novel quasi-Bayesian method to weight multiple dynamical models by their skill at capturing both potentially non-linear trends and first-order autocorrelated variability of the underlying process, and to make weighted probabilistic projections. We validate the method using a suite of one-at-a-time cross-validation experiments involving Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), its temperature-based index, as well as Korean summer mean maximum temperature. In these experiments the method tends to exhibit superior skill over a trend-only Bayesian model averaging weighting method in terms of weight assignment and probabilistic forecasts. Specifically, mean credible interval width, and mean absolute error of the projections tend to improve. We apply the method to a problem of projecting summer mean maximum temperature change over Korea by the end of the 21st century using a multi-model ensemble. Compared to the trend-only method, the new method appreciably sharpens the probability distribution function (pdf) and increases future most likely, median, and mean warming in Korea. The method is flexible, with a potential to improve forecasts in geosciences and other fields.

Abstract
Congenital cataracts can occur as a non-syndromic isolated ocular disease or as a part of genetic syndromes accompanied by a multi-systemic disease. Approximately 50% of all congenital cataract cases have a heterogeneous genetic basis. Here, we describe three generations of a family with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern and common complex phenotypes, including bilateral congenital cataracts, short stature, macrocephaly, and minor skeletal anomalies. We did not find any chromosomal aberrations or gene copy number abnormalities using conventional genetic tests; accordingly, we conducted whole-exome sequencing (WES) to identify disease-causing genetic alterations in this family. Based on family WES data, we identified a novel BRD4 missense mutation as a candidate causal variant and performed cell-based experiments by ablation of endogenous BRD4 expression in human lens epithelial cells. The protein expression levels of connexin 43, p62, LC3BII, and p53 differed significantly between control cells and cells in which endogenous BRD4 expression was inhibited. We inferred that a BRD4 missense mutation was the likely disease-causing mutation in this family. Our findings may improve the molecular diagnosis of congenital cataracts and support the use of WES to clarify the genetic basis of complex diseases.
