Abstract
BACKGROUND The evening primrose family (Onagraceae) includes 664 species (803 taxa) with a center of diversity in the Americas, especially western North America. Ongoing research in Onagraceae includes exploring striking variation in floral morphology, scent composition, and breeding system, as well as the role of these traits in driving diversity among plants and their interacting pollinators and herbivores. However, these efforts are limited by the lack of a comprehensive, well-resolved phylogeny. Previous phylogenetic studies based on a few loci strongly support the monophyly of the family and the sister relationship of the two largest tribes but fail to resolve several key relationships. RESULTS We used a target enrichment approach to reconstruct the phylogeny of Onagraceae using 303 highly conserved, low-copy nuclear loci. We present a phylogeny for Onagraceae with 169 individuals representing 152 taxa sampled across the family, including extensive sampling within the largest tribe, Onagreae. Deep splits within the family are strongly supported, whereas relationships among closely related genera and species are characterized by extensive conflict among individual gene trees. CONCLUSIONS This phylogenetic resource will augment current research projects focused throughout the family in genomics, ecology, coevolutionary dynamics, biogeography, and the evolution of characters driving diversification in the family.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of evening primrose oil(EPO) for cervical ripening before gynecologic procedures and compare it to misoprostol. In this study,40 hysteroscopy, dilation and curettage (D&C) candidates were enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either 2000 mg vaginal EPO (n = 20) or 200 μg vaginal misoprostol (n = 20) two hours before the expected procedure. The measured outcomes were the size of the Hegar dilator that passed through the cervix effortlessly, uterine cervicovaginal complications, and Drug-related side effects. The two groups were not significantly different in age, number of gravity, parity, type of delivery, and menopausal status (P>0.05). The mean ±SD size of the first dilator was 5.25 ± 1.55 in the misoprostol group and 7.30 ± 1.08 in the EPO group (P<0.001). The pain complaint in the EPO group was significantly lower (P = 0.027) but the two groups were not significantly different in terms of other complications. No cases of uterine or cervical rupture were seen in either group. The present study showed that 2000 mg vaginal EPO was significantly more effective for cervical ripening than 200 μg of vaginal misoprostol before gynecological surgery. Abstract
Hot flashes are considered the most bothersome complaint during menopause. Although hormone therapy is an effective option to relieve hot flashes, it has been associated with significant side effects. The aim of our study is to suggest a novel combination of different plant extracts with distinct mechanisms of action against hot flashes. We selected the rhizome of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (Fabaceae), the rhizome of Actaea racemosa L. (Ranunculaceae), the aerial parts of Hypericum perforatum L. (Hypericaceae) to produce extracts rich in bioactive phytochemicals and the seed oil of Oenothera biennis L. (Onagraceae). We investigated their estrogenic and antioxidant potential and their inhibitory effect against prostaglandin D2 receptor 1 (DP1) as a novel mechanistic pathway for vasodilation in hot flashes, alone or in combination. The phytochemical footprint of the extracts was analyzed using HPLC-PDA and UPLC-HRMS. We observed that the tested extracts possess different mechanisms of action. A. racemosa exerts a beneficial activation of the estrogen receptor, H. perforatum possesses the highest antioxidant capacity and the seed oil of O. biennis inhibits the DP1 receptor. The triple combination in the optimal doses pertains to efficacy against all three mechanisms of action, serves as a multitarget plant-based therapy and could serve as a novel strategy for the alleviation of hot flashes in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
The optimization of ultrasound-assisted alkaline extraction and enzymatic deamidation by protein-glutaminase (PG) on evening primrose seed cake (EPSC) protein and its effect on structure (amino acid composition, secondary structure and electrophoresis pattern) and techno-functional properties (water-holding and oil-binding capacities, solubility, emulsifying and foaming properties) of EPSC protein were evaluated. The optimum conditions of the both processes were measured using response surface methodology (RSM). The maximum yield (26.4%) and protein content (86.1%) were reached at the optimized extraction conditions. Optimal conditions of PG deamidation based on reaching a high degree of deamidation (DD) with a simultaneously low degree of hydrolysis (DH). Under these conditions, DD and DH were 39.40 and 2.11%, respectively. Ultrasound-assisted alkaline extraction and enzymatic deamidation by PG have great potential to produce edible EPSC protein with modified techno-functional characteristics that can be used for several aims in the food and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
Hysterosalpingography is one of the essential diagnostic methods for examining women who have difficulty becoming pregnant. This procedure is somehow invasive and is associated with numerous complications such as allergic sensitivity, pain, abdominal cramps and shock. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of evening primrose on cervical length and pain during and after hysterosalpingography. In this double-blind clinical trial, 66 candidates for hysterosalpingography were randomly divided into two groups. A group received 1000 mg of evening primrose orally for two days prior to hysterosalpingography, while the control group received a placebo drug similar in size to evening primrose three days prior to hysterosalpingography. The pain level was recorded based on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), during tenaculum placement but also immediately and four hours after hysterosalpingography. Finally, the data were analyzed using SPSS (version 20). There was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of pain during insertion of speculum and injection of the contrast medium (p <0.05). Less pain was reported in the evening primrose group compared to placebo. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the length and diameter of the cervix (p <0.05). Given the fact that it is a medicinal plant with no complications and can reduce pain during speculum insertion and during contrast medium injection, evening primrose seems to be a good drug for managing pain during hysterosalpingography.

Abstract
Considering that sex related differences in cardiac response to flaxseed (FSO) and evening primrose oil (EPO) are insufficiently known present investigation assessed the effect of these two oils, on the cardiac function of isolated rat hearts and the possible role of sex in this. The present study was carried out on 60 adult male Wistar albino rats randomly divided into 6 groups: male rats treated with EPO, dose of 10 mg/kg/day; female rats treated with EPO, dose of 10 mg/kg/day; male rats treated with FSO, dose of 300 mg/kg/day; female rats treated with FSO, dose of 300 mg/kg/day; control group of female rats treated with regular laboratory diet for animals; control group of male rats treated with regular laboratory diet for animals. Using the Langendorff technique, markers of the heart function were evaluated: the maximum and minimum rates of pressure development in the left ventricle (LV; dP/dtmax, dP/dtmin), systolic and diastolic left ventricular pressure (SLVP, DLVP, respectively), heart rate (HR) and coronary flow (CF). Male rats treated with EPO had significantly higher (p = 0.016) mean values of dP/dtmax, dP/dtmin, SLVP and DLVP (average increase for all CPPs 20%, 25%, 30% and 110%, respectively), compared to the group of male rats treated with FSO (p = 0.914). Our study results indicate that both types of PUFA oils only slightly changed the function of the isolated rat heart in male but not in female rats. Nevertheless, the difference between oil treatments was found in male rats who had stronger cardiac response after supplementation with EPO.

Abstract
The 2015-2020 dietary guidelines for Americans advise substituting total unsaturated fatty acids (∑UFA) for total saturated fatty acids (∑SFA). Thus, field experiments were carried out to verify the influence of irrigation regime (well-irrigated and water deficit) and fertilizers (chemical and biological) on the ratio of ∑UFA to ∑SFA of evening primrose seed oil. Therefore, two experiments were conducted at the experimental stations (arid and semi-arid) of Iran in 2014 and 2015. Experiments were conducted in a split factorial layout within a randomized complete block design with three replications. Water deficit significantly reduced UFA (omega 3, 6, 7 and 9), ∑UFA and ratio of ∑UFA to ∑SFA (especially in the arid region), but it increased SFA and ∑SFA (especially in the arid region). In fact, fatty acid quality (increased ratio of ∑UFA to ∑SFA) of evening primrose seed oil was significantly increased in well-irrigated compared to water deficit stress (especially in the semi-arid region). Bio-fertilizers (Azospirillum lipoferum and Glomus mosseae) and chemical fertilizers (urea + triple superphosphate) increased the ratio of ∑UFA to ∑SFA of evening primrose seed oil (especially in the semi-arid region), but fatty acid quality of evening primrose oil was significantly increased in bio-fertilizers compared to the chemical fertilizers (especially in the arid region).

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis L., Onagraceae) is a wild medicinal plant of Central American origin that is now one of the most widely used herbal medicines in different parts of the world. Oil extracted from it seeds is traditionally used in the treatment of eczema, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, breast problem, premenstrual and menopausal syndrome, all they have an inflammatory component. The present study demonstrates the in vitro anti-inflammatory effect of long-chain fatty alcohols, minor compounds isolated from Evening primrose oil (EPO). MATERIAL AND METHODS A mixture of long chain fatty alcohols (LCFAs) was isolated from the non-triacylglycerol fraction of the EPO. Hexacosanol (C26OH: 38.65%), tetracosanol (C24OH: 31.59%), docosanol (C22OH: 11.36%) and octocosanol (C28OH: 7.64%), were the major constituents, identified and quantified by GC and GC-MS. LCFA was tested with LPS stimulated murine peritoneal macrophage. This fraction, significantly and dose-dependently decreased nitric oxide production induced by LPS (P<0.001) and the inhibitory effect seems to be consequence of an action at the level of the inducible nitric-oxide synthethase (iNOS) gene enzyme expression rather than to a direct inhibitory action on enzyme activity. The release of PLA2 and TXB2 also was significantly inhibited by LCFAs (P<0.001) although LCFAs did not affect to PGE2 generation, however the western blot assay showed that LCFAs reduced cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme gene expression at all doses assayed. In the same way, the secretion of inflammatory cytokines interleukin 1β (IL-1β) and tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) from LPS-stimulated murine macrophage, were also significantly reduced (P<0.001). CONCLUSION These results demonstrates the anti-inflammatory activity of LCFAs, providing an additional value about the role of bioactive minor compounds in the beneficial effect of EPO and supports its traditional uses in inflammatory processes management.
