Abstract
The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze the characteristics of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) images and quantitative parameters of time-intensity curves (TICs) in children's peripheral neuroblastic tumors (pNTs). By comparing the imaging features and quantitative parameters of the TICs of neuroblastoma (NB) and ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB) patients, we attempted to identify the distinguishing points between NB and GNB. A total of 35 patients confirmed to have pNTs by pathologic examination were included in this study. Each child underwent CEUS with complete imaging data (including still images and at least 3 min of video files). Twenty-four patients were confirmed to have NB, and 11 were considered to have GNB according to differentiation. The CEUS image features and quantitative parameters of the TICs of all lesions were analyzed to determine whether there were CEUS-related differences between the two types of pNT. There was a significant difference in the enhancement patterns of the CEUS features (χ2 = 5.303, p < 0.05), with more "peripheral-central" enhancement in the NB group and more "central-peripheral" enhancement in the GNB group. In the TIC, the rise time and time to peak were significantly different (p < 0.05). The receiver operating characteristic curve showed that the probability of ganglion cell NB increased significantly after RT > 15.29, with a sensitivity of 0.636 and a specificity of 0.958. When the peak time was greater than 16.155, the probability of NB increased significantly, with a sensitivity of 0.636 and a specificity of 0.958. The CEUS features of NB and GNB patients are very similar, and it is difficult to distinguish them. Rise time and time to peak may be useful in identifying GNB and NB, but the sample size of this study was small, and the investigation was only preliminary; a larger sample size is needed to support these conclusions.

Abstract
Peripheral neuroblastic tumors represent the fourth-largest group of malignant tumors in childhood. The majority of these tumors are neuroblastomas, which can be classified into undifferentiated, poorly differentiated, and differentiating subtypes. In addition, peripheral neuroblastic tumors include ganglioneuroblastoma, a composite tumor composed of Schwannian cell stroma and neuroblasts as well as benign ganglioneuroma. In this overview, histopathological diagnostic criteria and grading systems, as well as common molecular alterations that are of prognostic and therapeutic significance, are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB) is a peripheral neuroblastoma (NB) with malignant degree between highly malignant NB and benign ganglioma (GN). Pathology is the gold standard of diagnosis. Although GNB is not uncommon in children, biopsy alone may lead to an inaccurate diagnosis, especially for giant tumors. However, surgical resection may be associated with significant complications. Here, we report a case of computer-assisted surgical resection of a giant GNB in a child and successful rescue of the inferior mesenteric artery.
CASE SUMMARY A 4-year-old girl was admitted to our department for a giant retroperitoneal lesion, which was considered to be an NB by her local hospital. The symptoms of the girl disappeared spontaneously without treatment. On physical examination, a mass of about 10 cm × 7 cm could be palpated in her abdomen. Ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography performed in our hospital also showed an NB, and there was a very thick blood vessel inside the tumor. However, aspiration biopsy revealed GN. Surgical resection is the best treatment option for this giant benign tumor. For precise preoperative evaluation, three-dimensional reconstruction was performed. It was clear that the tumor was close to the abdominal aorta. The superior mesenteric vein was pushed forward, and the inferior mesenteric artery passed through the tumor. Because GN generally does not invade blood vessels, we split the tumor with a CUSA knife during the operation and found that there was indeed a straight and intact vascular sheath. Arterial pulsation was observed in the completely exposed inferior mesenteric artery. The pathologists interpreting the tissue finally diagnosed it as a mixed GNB (GNBi), which is more malignant than GN. However, both GN and GNBi usually have a good prognosis.
CONCLUSION This was a case of successful surgical resection of a giant GNB, and aspiration biopsy underestimated the pathological staging of the tumor. Preoperative three-dimensional reconstruction assisted with the radical resection of the tumor and rescue of the inferior mesenteric artery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To identify radiomic features that can predict the pathological type of neuroblastic tumor in children. METHODS Data on neuroblastic tumors in 104 children were retrospectively analyzed. There were 14 cases of ganglioneuroma, 24 cases of ganglioneuroblastoma, and 65 cases of neuroblastoma. Stratified sampling was used to randomly allocate the cases into the training and validation sets in a ratio of 3:1. The maximum relevance-minimum redundancy algorithm was used to identify the top 10 of two clinical features and 851 radiomic features in portal venous-phase contrast-enhanced computed tomography images. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was used to classify tumors in two binary steps: first as ganglioneuroma compared to the other two types, then as ganglioneuroblastoma compared to neuroblastoma. RESULTS Based on 10 clinical-radiomic features, the classifier identified ganglioneuroma compared to the other two tumor types in the validation dataset with sensitivity of 100.0%, specificity of 81.8%, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.875. The classifier identified ganglioneuroblastoma versus neuroblastoma with a sensitivity of 83.3%, a specificity of 87.5%, and an AUC of 0.854. The overall accuracy of the classifier across all three types of tumors was 80.8%. CONCLUSION Radiomic features can help predict the pathological type of neuroblastic tumors in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical neuroblastic tumors (NTs) are rare but less aggressive cancer with an above-average survival rate. Little has been published regarding the management and surgical outcomes of patients with cervical NTs based on pathology category. This study compared and identified the preoperative characteristics of cervical NTs in different pathology categories and evaluated the outcomes of patients undergoing surgical resection. MATERIALS AND METHODS Upon the institutional review board's approval, a retrospective chart review was performed at Beijing Children's Hospital from April 2013 to August 2020. Demographics of patients, imaging data, lab test results, operation details and outcomes were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS Of 32 cervical NTs, 24(80%) were classified as neuroblastoma (NB) /ganglioneuroblastoma-nodular (GNBn) and 8(20%) as ganglioneuroblastoma-intermixed (GNBi)/ ganglioneuroma (GN). Patients with GNBi/GN were older than those with NB/GNBn (44.5 months (IQR 16-81) vs 9 months (IQR 1-47); P = 0.001). GNBi/GN patients presented more frequently with stage 1 disease compared with NB/GNBn patients (100% vs. 29.2%, P = 0.001), less frequently with tumor-related symptoms (0% vs. 70.8%, P = 0.001), artery encased tumor (0% vs. 41.7%, P = 0.035), and surgical complications (25% vs. 70.8%, P = 0.038). GNBi/GN patients were also less likely to show elevated neuron specific enolase (NSE) (12.5% vs. 79.2%, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Cervical NB/GNBn and GNBi/GN patients had distinct characteristic clinical presentations and surgical outcomes. For children with features suggestive of benign disease (older age, asymptomatic, normal serum tumor markers) and no artery image-defined risk factors (IDRFs), upfront resection can be considered.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ganglioneuroma (GN) and ganglioneuroblastoma-intermixed (GNB-I) represent benign variants of neuroblastic tumors in children; however, differentiating from more aggressive histological variants of GNB including the nodular subtype (GNB-N) prior to resection can be challenging, even with biopsy. Currently, no standard treatment guidelines exist. The purpose of this study was to identify pre-operative characteristics of benign neuroblastic tumors and evaluate outcomes for patients who underwent surgical resection or observation. METHODS Retrospective chart review of children treated at a single institution between 2009 and 2019 for non-metastatic tumor with a tissue diagnosis of GN, GNB-N or GNB-I. Demographics, imaging, labs, operative details and outcomes were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS Of 53 patients, 45% were male. The most common tumor location was abdomen (49%), followed by thorax (34%). Forty-five percent had at least one image defined risk factor. Biopsy was performed in 32% (17/53) and upfront surgery in 68% (36/53). Three patients (3/53, 5.6%) with biopsy demonstrating GN tumors were observed due to high surgical risk. Pathology of resected specimens demonstrated GN in 52% (26/50) and GNB-I or GNB-N in 48% (24/50). The majority of GNB tumors (75% (18/24) were GNB-I and 25% (6/24) were GNB-N. Therefore, 88% of the resected tumors were benign spectrum neuroblastic tumors (GN & GNB-I). Seven (7/50, 14%) patients experienced perioperative complication (temporary paralysis, Horner's syndrome, chylothorax, vocal cord paralysis). Recurrence was noted in 1 patient with GN (1/50, 2%) and 3 with GNB-N (3/50, 6%). There were no tumor-related deaths. Patients with GN were older than those with GNB (8.8 years (IQR 6-11.25) vs 5.6 years for GN (IQR 3-7); p = 0.01). GNB tumors were also more likely to have calcifications on imaging (63% vs. 38%, p = .01) and more commonly had MIBG avidity (88% vs 66%, p = .04). There were no significant differences in tumor size or symptoms at presentation. CONCLUSIONS In children with neuroblastic tumors, older age, CT without tumor calcifications, lack of MIBG avidity, and/or normal urine catecholamines may indicate benign GN. Close observation could be considered for asymptomatic patients meeting these criteria with biopsy-proven GN, with resection reserved for progressive growth or symptom development. However, larger, multicenter studies are needed for further validation. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV.

Abstract
A 1-year-old boy presented with a 4-month history of hypertension, ptosis of the right upper eyelid, left hemifacial sweating, and flushing. He was diagnosed with Harlequin syndrome associated with Horner syndrome. Computed tomography revealed a mass lesion in the right superior mediastinum. Therefore, the patient underwent total tumor resection. Histological examination demonstrated ganglioneuroblastoma. The MYCN oncogene was not amplified, and the mitosis-karyorrhexis index was low. Accordingly, radiation and chemotherapy were not performed. No recurrence was observed within 8 months after surgery, and the patient's blood pressure was normalized. However, the ptosis, hemifacial sweating, and flushing persisted.

Abstract
Peripheral neuroblastic tumors are extremely rare in the adult with less just over 20 cases involving adrenal gland described in the literature. We reported herewith the case of a 22-year-old young male who presented with epigastric pain and diarrhea. Imaging studies documented a 3.5cm x 3cm x 4cm solid well-circumscribed right adrenal mass, of heterogeneous structure and with fine calcifications. The lesion turned negative at MIBG scintigraphy. A right robotic-assisted adrenalectomy was performed leading to complete excision of the lesion without complications. Histology was consistent with intermixed stroma-rich ganglioneuroblastoma. A wait-and-see strategy was considered adequate. Two years after diagnosis patient is alive disease-free. Although the definitive diagnosis of a peripheral neuroblastic tumor is obtained after histopathological analysis, CT, and MRI are helpful to further characterize masses and useful in pretreatment risk stratification. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of GNB development in adult population and its malignant potential.

Abstract
Neuroblastic tumors are a group of tumors of the sympathetic ganglia and adrenal medulla that derive from primordial neural crest cells. These tumors include neuroblastoma, intermixed ganglioneuroblastoma, nodular ganglioneuroblastoma, and ganglioneuroma. Neuroblastomas are the most common extracranial solid tumor arising in childhood and may occur in different anatomic sites. Neuroblastic tumors are common mesenchymal tumors of the mediastinum. Herein, we describe advances in our understanding of neuroblastic tumor biology. Pathologists should be aware of diagnostic challenges associated with these tumors to ensure correct histologic diagnosis and appropriate clinical management. We describe updated mediastinal neuroblastic tumor pathology, focusing on morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features and differential diagnoses.

Abstract
Primary cervical ganglioneuroblastoma is rare and reports of its subtypes are limited. This case series describes two pediatric patients with the nodular subtype of primary cervical ganglioneuroblastoma with lymphatic spread. Clinical course, diagnosis, and management of this rare tumor are discussed with emphasis on the importance of including neuroblastic tumors in the differential diagnosis of pediatric neck masses. We also report the use of nerve monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve as a surrogate for the vagus nerve during a pediatric neck dissection.

Abstract
Introduction Composite phaeochromocytoma is a tumour containing a separate tumour of neuronal origin in addition to a chromaffin cell tumour. This study reports on two cases from a single centre’s records and presents a systematic literature review of composite phaeochromocytomas. Methods In addition to describing 2 case reports, a systematic search of the Medline database from inception up to April 2020 was done for human case reports on composite phaeochromocytomas. Relevant titles and/or abstracts were screened, and full texts were reviewed to identify appropriate studies. Data was extracted and a descriptive analysis of presentation, clinical features, management strategies and outcomes was performed. The quality of included studies was assessed using a critical appraisal checklist. Results There were 62 studies included, with a total of 94 patients. Of 91 patients where data was available, the median (range) age of patients was 48 (4–86) years. Of 90 patients where information was provided, 57% were female. In at least 28% of patients, a genetic cause was identified. Common presenting features include abdominal pain, palpable mass, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal symptoms. The most common tumour component with phaeochromocytoma is ganglioneuroma; other components include ganglioneuroblastoma, neuroblastoma and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours. In patients with follow-up data (n=48), 85% of patients were alive and well at a median (range) follow-up time of 18 (0.5–168) months. Conclusion Composite phaeochromocytoma is a rare tumour, with a significant genetic predisposition. This review summarises available epidemiological data, which will be useful for clinicians managing this rare condition.

Abstract
PURPOSE Horner syndrome (HS) manifests in unilateral ptosis, miosis, enophthalmos, and anhedonia. It is most commonly caused by trauma or surgical procedures, but can also occur in pediatric patients as a result of tumors, especially neuroblastoma (NBL). The objective of this study was to analyze the incidence of HS in patients diagnosed with NBL. METHODS A retrospective analysis of data collected at the Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology, and Transplantology from 2004 to 2019 was performed. The study group included 119 patients younger than 18 years old, with 62 girls and 57 boys. All of them were diagnosed with a neuroblastic tumor. RESULTS Among the 119 patients, eight children (6.72%) were diagnosed with HS associated with NBL. Three of these patients presented to the clinic with HS, whereas HS developed after the surgical procedure to remove the tumor in four patients. The adrenal gland was the most frequent localization of the tumor. However, HS occurred more frequently in patients with mediastinum tumors. As a presenting symptom, HS occurred in 2 of 11 cases (18.18%) with mediastinum localization. All of the patients with HS were younger than 2 years old. CONCLUSION Investigation of the cause of isolated HS is crucial because it can be the first symptom of NBL. However, the surgical procedure itself increases the risk of HS as a complication of NBL treatment.

Abstract
Pediatric adrenal tumors are unique entities with specific diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic challenges. The adrenal medulla gives rise to peripheral neuroblastic tumors (pNTs), pathologically defined by their architecture, stromal content, degree of differentiation, and mitotic-karyorrhectic index. Successful risk stratification of pNTs uses patient age, stage, tumor histology, and molecular/genetic aberrations. The adrenal cortex gives rise to adrenocortical tumors (ACTs), which present diagnostic and prognostic challenges. Histologic features that signify poor prognosis in adults can be meaningless in children, who have superior outcomes. The key clinical, pathologic, and molecular findings of pediatric ACTs have yet to be completely identified.

Abstract
Ganglioneuroblastomas are a member of the neuroblastic family of tumors most commonly seen in children but they may also occur in adults. Ganglioneuroblastomas have metastatic potential and, like other neuroblastic tumors, osseous metastasis is possible. Imaging features of ganglioneuroblastomas tend to be variable. We describe a case of an adult female who developed a ganglioneuroblastoma of the posterior mediastinum that metastasized to the thoracolumbar spine, highlighting rarely documented osseous metastasis.

Abstract
Central nervous system (CNS) ganglioneuroblastoma is a rare neuroectodermal neoplasm and little is known about its clinical and biological features. Herein, we report a pediatric case of CNS ganglioneuroblastoma harboring MYO5A-NTRK3 fusion. The patient, a 4-year-old boy, underwent a partial resection of a supratentorial tumor that was histopathologically diagnosed as a CNS ganglioneuroblastoma. Treatment with radiotherapy was started per the St Jude Medulloblastoma 03 (SJMB03) protocol; however, the tumor progressed rapidly and radiotherapy was temporally discontinued. Meanwhile, the patient underwent a second surgery, in which a gross total resection was successfully performed, following which he completed the remaining protocol-based therapy. Although an early focal recurrence was detected for which he received additional radiotherapy and oral temozolomide, the patient remained in complete remission for 14 months after the completion of the treatment. A central pathological review and molecular analysis were performed that revealed a MYO5A-NTRK3 fusion. Interestingly, the MYO5A-NTRK3 fusion has been recurrently detected in melanocytic tumors but not in other types of tumors. Therefore, it can be speculated that our case might partly share tumorigenesis mechanisms with MYO5A-NTRK3-positive melanocytic tumors. In addition, our case may enable an improved understanding of the pathogenesis and clinical features of CNS ganglioneuroblastomas.

Abstract
Neurogenic tumors represent a broad ill-defined category of neoplasms that includes tumors of Schwann cell and/or neuroblastic derivation, as well as neoplasms that typically develop in the central nervous system, but rarely present in ectopic sites including the mediastinum. Neurogenic tumors may occur at many different anatomic sites, but the mediastinum represents a uniquely challenging site given the complex anatomy. Additionally, some of these neoplasms may present with multicentric involvement in the context of genetic syndromes, including NF1, NF2 and schwanomatosis. Most of these develop in posterior structures, often in association with paraspinal structures. Fine needle biopsy/small biopsies play an important role in the diagnosis of these neoplasms, given its record of safety and the increased applicability of ancillary testing to these smaller samples at the present time. In this review we focus on the major categories of neurogenic tumors that may be encountered in the mediastinum, including schwannoma, neurofibroma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, ganglioneuroma and ganglioneuroblastoma, as well as rarer members of this category. We discuss diagnostic approaches applicable to small cytologic and tissue samples and relevant differential diagnoses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neuroblastic tumor (NT) is the most common extracranial solid tumor of childhood with variable outcome which again depends on risk stratification related to distinct biology of the tumor. The use of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) material for evaluation of cytomorphological parameters and risk stratification in NTs using cytology prognostic score (PS) is limited in routine practice. METHODS We reviewed 38 FNA cytology cases diagnosed as pediatric small round cell tumor between time period June 2017 to December 2019 for clinical, cytomorphological and immunohistochemical features. RESULTS Ten out of 38 small round cell tumors were NTs. All 10 cases were further subclassified according to International Neuroblastoma Pathology Classification into undifferentiated neuroblastoma (n = 1), poorly differentiated neuroblastoma (n = 5), differentiating neuroblastoma (n = 2), and ganglioneuroblastoma (n = 2). Cytologic PS was done using the morphological criteria as described previously in literature. The patients were divided into favorable and unfavorable cytomorphological prognostic categories with a cut off scoring of 12. A score of more than 12 is associated with high risk morphology and advanced stage. All cases with PS > 12 (n-4) (unfavorable cytomorphology) had a poor outcome compared to six patients with PS < 12 (n-6) (favorable cytomorphology). CONCLUSION Aspiration cytology can be used as a first line investigation to evaluate the cytomorphological features for risk stratification and diagnosis in patients with NTs using cytological prognostic scoring system. A larger multi-centric validation study necessitates for cytological risk stratification.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neuroblastoma ranks third among pediatric malignancies. CASE REPORT The case of a 3-year-old child is presented, who suddenly had frequent, unproductive, emetic cough; fever; and weight loss. Lung X-ray showed an opacity situated in the posterior superior mediastinum. Thoracic ultrasound revealed a slightly inhomogeneous, hypoechoic mass located in the posterior superior mediastinum. Computed tomography evidenced a tumor mass with homogeneous appearance in the costo-vertebral groove. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of ganglioneuroblastoma. CONCLUSION Although history and clinical examination provided few elements, diagnosis was made based on imaging and histopathological examination.

Abstract
Background Quantitative diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) probes into tissue microstructure in solid tumours. In this retrospective ethically approved study, we investigated DWI as a potential non-invasive predictor of tumour dignity and prognosis in paediatric patients with neuroblastic tumours. Methods Nineteen consecutive patients with neuroblastoma (NB, n = 15), ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB, n = 1) and ganglioneuroma (GN, n = 3) underwent 3-T magnetic resonance imaging at first diagnosis and after 3-month follow-up, following a protocol including DWI (b = 50 and 800 s/mm2) in addition to standard sequences. All DWI scans were analysed for tumour volume assessment and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) calculation. Correlation with tumour pathology and risk factors (bone-marrow metastases, MYCN-amplification and 1p-deletion), therapeutic regime (observation versus chemotherapy) and clinical follow-up was evaluated. Results At baseline, mean ADC in NB was lower than in GNB/GN (0.76 vs. 1.47 × 10−3 mm2/s, p = 0.003). An ADC cutoff ≤ 1.05 identified malignant disease with 100.0% sensitivity (95% confidence interval [CI] 29.2–100.0%) and 93.8% specificity (95% CI 69.8–99.8%). Initial ADC was < 0.80 in all NB patients with eventual tumour relapse. During follow-up, tumour ADC values increased in the observation group (NB/GN) without relapse (p = 0.043). In eventually relapsing tumours, ADC values at follow-up tended to decrease further despite reduction in tumour volume. Conclusions ADC values at first presentation differed significantly between malignant and benign neuroblastic tumours. Low baseline ADC was predictive of tumour progression and relapse in NB patients. With therapy, increasing ADC values appeared to predict relapse-free survival, while a decreasing ADC during therapy was an indicator of poor prognosis.

Abstract
A 10-year-old girl presented to her pediatrician with a history of cough and fever. A chest radiograph revealed a paraspinal mass. On cross-sectional imaging, the mass traversed the diaphragm, extending from T9 to L1 spinal levels with involvement of the T10–12 neural foramen. Vanillylmandelic and homovanillic acid levels were normal. On review of historical radiographs, the mass had increased in size. Thus, surgical resection was recommended for diagnosis and treatment. The patient was placed in left lateral decubitus position. The retroperitoneal space was accessed inferior to the twelfth rib. One 12 mm and two 5 mm ports were used. Development of the retroperitoneal space was achieved with both blunt dissection and a vessel-sealing device. The diaphragm was incised to resect the thoracic component of the mass. The tumor was adherent at the neural foramen and was resected flush with the spine. The diaphragm repaired primarily. She was discharged home on post-operative day four without complication. Pathology demonstrated a ganglioneuroma. The patient was well at her follow-up, and imaging one year postoperatively was without recurrence. No additional treatment was required. A laparoscopic retroperitoneal approach allows for a safe, minimally invasive resection of a thoracoabdominal mass without violation of the abdominal cavity.

Abstract
Background Ganglioneuroblastomas, particularly those that produce catecholamine, are extremely rare in adults. Here, we report an interesting surgical case of an adult patient with a catecholamine-producing ganglioneuroblastomas in her adrenal gland, suspected to be a pheochromocytoma, and with a cerebral aneurysm. Case presentation The patient was a 73-year-old woman under treatment for hypertension. During a health check-up, a cystic retroperitoneal tumor was incidentally found in the superior pole of her right kidney. Her blood adrenaline level was slightly elevated, and her urinary adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine levels were above the upper reference limits. In addition, 24-h urinary excretion of metanephrine, normetanephrine, and vanillylmandelic acid were all increased. 123I-Meta-iodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy showed an abnormal accumulation of the marker in the cyst wall. She was, therefore, diagnosed with a pheochromocytoma and scheduled for tumor resection. However, preoperatively, 8-mm-diameter cerebral aneurysm was incidentally found in her basilar artery. This required careful preoperative discussion. The aneurysm was difficult to approach and treat, and based on its position, shape, and size, the risk of rupture was low. Because hypertension is a major risk factor for aneurysmal rupture, we decided to proceed with the tumor resection. A lumbar catheter was placed to monitor the cerebral aneurysm for intraoperative rupture, and her transcranial motor-evoked potential and somatosensory-evoked potentials were monitored to track her intraoperative neurological function. During surgery, we carefully monitored fluctuations in blood pressure and resected the tumor with minimal mobilization. Postoperatively, head computed tomography confirmed that there was no sign of rupture. Histopathologically, the tumor was diagnosed as a catecholamine-producing ganglioneuroblastoma. The postoperative course was good, and the patient’s blood pressure improved. Conclusions Careful perioperative management is needed for a patient with both a catecholamine-producing tumor and cerebral aneurysm.

Abstract
Neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma, and ganglioneuroma share the same histological spectrum which originates from neural crest cells. We present herein two young adult patients with neuroblastic tumors with lymph node metastases. Both the patients were diagnosed incidentally as having retroperitoneal masses, which showed little or no immature cells despite coexistence of lymph node involvement. The tumors were considered to represent spontaneous regression of malignant neuroblastoma. Radiologists should consider the possibility of spontaneous regression of neuroblastic tumors, when poorly enhanced multi-component masses at the retroperitoneum with lymph node involvement are visualized.

Abstract
Background Ganglioneuroblastoma, nodular is defined as a composite tumor of biologically distinct clones. The peripheral neuroblastic tumors in this category are characterized by the presence of grossly visible neuroblastoma nodules coexisting with ganglioneuroblastoma, intermixed, or with ganglioneuroma. Making a correct diagnosis of ganglioneuroblastoma, nodular is often difficult by biopsy or partial tumor resection, because the neuroblastic nodule could be hidden and not sampled for pathological examination. Case presentation We report a case of a Japanese boy aged 3 years, 8 months, with an unresectable abdominal tumor and elevated vanillylmandelic acid and homovanillic acid levels. The initial biopsy was ganglioneuroma. However, after the second biopsy from a hidden neuroblastoma nodule that was clearly highlighted by fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography, we reached the diagnosis of ganglioneuroblastoma, nodular. Because the nodule demonstrated neuroblastoma, differentiating subtype, with a low mitosis-karyorrhexis index (favorable histology) and nonamplified MYCN, the boy was treated according to the intermediate-risk protocol and is now alive and well 4 years after the diagnosis. Conclusions This case illustrates the critical role of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography for detecting a neuroblastoma nodule in a ganglioneuroblastoma.

Abstract
Ganglioneuroblastoma is a primary malignant tumor of the sympathetic nervous system. It usually occurs in children and is extremely rare in adults. Here, we report a case of an adrenal ganglioneuroblastoma in a 38-year-old man. The adrenal incidentaloma was surgically removed and pathologically diagnosed as a ganglioneuroblastoma. The characteristics were described, because it is an unusual tumor based on the published reports in adults. To the best of our knowledge, fewer than 50 cases of ganglioneuroblastoma and 19 cases of adrenal ganglioneuroblastoma, including this case, are reported in the literature.

Abstract
Survival of stage 4 ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB) patients is poor; no reports exist of patients surviving up to 5 years (1, 2). We report the clinical and therapeutic course of a patient with stage 4 GNB surviving beyond expectations due to a multimodal treatment approach incorporating new technologies in cancer diagnostic and treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Clinical researches about the management and outcomes of ganglioneuroma and ganglioneuroblastoma-intermixed are limited. We report the surgical outcomes of ganglioneuroma and ganglioneuroblastoma-intermixed in a single institution. METHODS Ganglioneuroma and ganglioneuroblastoma-intermixed diagnosed and resected between May 2009 and May 2015 in a tertiary children's hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Patients' demographic data, INSS stage, surgical complications, residual tumor size and outcomes were collected. RESULTS Thirty-four patients were included in the current study. All had localized tumors and were surgically managed. The overall acute complications rates were 8.8% (3/34) and none were fatal. Thirty-three of 34 patients had at least macroscopic tumor resection. Six patients had radiographically detected residual tumor after surgery, 25 none and 3 undocumented. Thirty-three (97.1%) patients were alive during a median follow-up of 36 months (range 1-82). In subgroup analysis, no significant difference regarding surgical complications and survival was found between ganglioneuroma and ganglioneuroblastoma-intermixed. Increased complete resection rates were observed in thoracic tumor compared with abdominal ones (p = 0.03). However, no significant difference (p = 0.089) regarding overall survival was found between patients with residual tumors and those without. Of the six patients with residual tumors, three showed complete resolution, two were unchanged and one died 3 years after initial surgery (the only death in this study). CONCLUSION Ganglioneuroma and ganglioneuroblastoma-intermixed can be safely and effectively resected, the residual tumor seems not to influence overall survival.

Abstract
Background Ganglioneuroblastoma is a tumor of peripheral neuroblastic tissue which occurs predominantly in the pediatric age group; it is a rare occurrence in the newborn period with only one case reported at birth to date. Case presentation We report the case of a newborn male baby of Brahmin ethnicity from Nepal who presented with respiratory distress and blueberry muffin skin lesions after birth. A computed tomography scan showed a mass lesion in the posterior mediastinum, which was diagnosed as ganglioneuroblastoma on fine-needle aspiration cytology. He also had metastases to multiple sites including heart, lungs, skin and brain. Conclusions Ganglioneuroblastoma is a rare tumor in newborns. Any newborn presenting with respiratory distress associated with blueberry muffin skin lesions should be evaluated for neuroblastic tumor.

Abstract
Neuroblastoma is the most common solid malignant neoplasm in the paediatric age group; accounting for 7% of all childhood malignancies, but neuroblastoma in adult, is a rare occurrence, finding mention in aeons of medical literature with an overall incidence of 1 in 10 million adults/year. We report the case of a 24-year-old male patient presenting with the complaints of progressive abdominal distention of 2 months duration. Multiple Detector Computed Tomography (MD-CT) of abdomen revealed a huge enhancing mass in the retroperitoneum abutting the left kidney, and a subsequent CT-guided biopsy and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of ganglioneuroblastoma. The patient was administered 3-cycles of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy with ifosphamide, carboplatin and etoposide (ICE-chemotherapy) and subsequently 3 more cycles of chemotherapy post surgery, followed by radiation. The rarity of this neoplasm in adults accounts for the lack of standardized staging and treatment protocols and the dismal prognosis even with aggressive multimodal treatment. We report this case because of its extreme rarity, and its tendency for capricious behavior.

Abstract
Pheochromocytoma and Ganglioneuroblastoma are separate diseases and a rare combination in which the diagnosis can only be confirmed by pathological examination after tumor excision. We reported here a case of ganglioneuroblastoma encapsulated in pheochromocytoma. The patient is a woman, 73 years old, hypertensive, with hypothyroidism, associated for 15 years with hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, which had frequent complaints of low back pain. She underwent magnetic resonance and the findings were consistent with the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. After surgery, anatomic, pathologic and immunohistochemistry analysis confirmed the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma composed by small ganglioneuroblastoma representation with the identification of small focus of infiltration of the adrenal capsule and adipose tissue by pheochromocytoma. This rare association can instigate the discussion of methods of diagnosis, more effective and more appropriate treatments for each patient.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our aim was to assess diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) of neuroblastic tumors and whether apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value may have a role in discrimination among neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma. MATERIAL AND METHODS The DWIs (b = 0-800 s/mm(2)) of 24 children (13 girls, 11 boys) who were diagnosed neuroblastic tumors on histopathological examination (neuroblastoma = 15, ganglioneuroblastoma = 5, ganglioneuroma = 4) were evaluated retrospectively. The ADC maps were performed by drawing freehand ROI on PACS (Sectra Workstation IDS7, Linköping, Sweden). RESULTS We observed a significant decrease in ADC value of neuroblastomas 0.869 ± 0.179 × 10(-3) mm(2)/s compared to ganglioneuroblastomas 0.97 ± 0.203 × 10(-3) mm(2)/s and ganglioneuromas 1.147 ± 0.299 × 10(-3) mm(2)/s (p = 0.026). There was no significant difference in between ganglioneuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma (p = 0.16). In detecting neuroblastomas; the sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive values of ADC were 74, 67, 78.6, 66 % respectively with a cut-off value of 0.93 × 10(-3) mm(2)/s. CONCLUSION Our study stands out as the most comprehensive study with larger sample size on this topic. Moreover, we are able to suggest a cut-off value which can discriminate neuroblastoma from ganglioneuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma. We believe that ADC will evolve to an objective, quantitative measurement in discrimination among malignant and benign neuroblastic tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although patients with peripheral neuroblastoma (NB; pelvic and thoracic) typically have better outcomes and less aggressive disease compared with patients with abdominal disease, little has been published with regard to the management and outcomes of patients with cervical NB. Herein, we sought to determine the characteristics of cervical neuroblastic tumors and the effect of extent of resection on survival and outcomes. METHODS We performed a retrospective review of 325 children with neuroblastic tumors at Children's Hospital Los Angeles over a 15-y period (January 1990-February 2015). Data collected from the medical record included location of tumor, age at diagnosis, age at resection, extent of resection, chemotherapy course, International Neuroblastoma Staging System stage, histologic International Neuroblastoma Pathology Classification, and MYCN amplification, a poor prognostic marker. Outcome variables included postoperative complications and overall survival. RESULTS Twelve patients (3.6%) were found to have cervical neuroblastic tumors (nine NBs, one ganglioneuroblastoma, and two ganglioneuromas). All had favorable histology, and none (0/12) had MYCN amplification. Of the NB patients, four of nine patients underwent resection, whereas the other five underwent biopsy followed by chemotherapy or observation alone. Of the 12 total patients, six underwent gross total resection, four (67%) of which developed complications. At a median follow-up of 4.4 y, there were no recurrences or deaths. CONCLUSIONS Cervical neuroblastic tumors represent favorable lesions with good outcomes similar to other peripheral neuroblastic tumors. In our study, survival was excellent regardless of extent of tumor resection. Based on our data, we recommend a minimally aggressive surgical approach in managing children with cervical neuroblastic tumors.

Abstract
Ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB) is a rare peripheral neuroblastic tumor that is derived from developing neuronal cells of the sympathetic nervous system, and usually occurs in young children. We present a case of GNB occurring as pleural mass in a 2-year-old boy, which led to diagnostic confusion. On fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), it was misinterpreted as mesothelioma. He underwent thoracotomy with excision of the mass. Histopathological findings showed features of a biphasic tumor suggestive of mesothelioma. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) performed for mesothelioma markers were inconclusive. On review of the histology slides, GNB was considered, which was subsequently proven by IHC. The rarity of this tumor, along with its nearly restricted occurrence at a young age, necessitates a strong suspicion in patients presenting with a symptomatic intrathoracic mass.

Abstract
A case of adrenal ganglioneuroblastoma is presented here. This adrenal ganglioneuroblastoma was found in a 27-year-old female 7 months after delivery. CT clarified that the tumor originated retroperitoneally and was large in size (11.4 cm × 9.4 cm). The tumor was surgically removed together with pancreatic body and tail, left kidney and spleen, and pathological diagnosis was adrenal ganglioneuroblastoma-intermixed. Adrenal ganglioneuroblastoma is extremely rare in adults, with only about 9 cases documented including this case.

Abstract
Ganglioneuroblastoma (GBN) is a malignant neoplasm of the autonomic nervous system. Adult onset of ganglioneuroblastoma is extremely rare. Only 16 cases have been reported in English literature, to date. Surgery represents the first-line therapy for the treatment of ganglioneuroblastoma. Radiation therapy is indicated in patients with localized unresectable disease. Chemotherapy is reserved for metastatic disease. We present the case of a 63-year-old man affected by ganglioneuroblastoma of the adrenal gland. The diagnosis was made incidentally. The tumor, measuring 5 × 3 cm, was successfully surgically removed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Ganglioneuroblastomas represent a histological subgroup of the rare neuroblastic tumours with intermediate malignant potential arising from neural crest progenitor cells of sympathetic nerves. Diagnosis can often be difficult based on imaging alone. We describe 4 cases of children presenting with a solitary neck mass with histology ultimately revealing ganglioneuroblastoma. METHODS A retrospective case note review was carried out of all patients with cervical ganglioneuroblastoma seen at Great Ormond Street Hospital, UK. RESULTS Mean age at presentation was 5 years. Based on imaging, the initial diagnoses for three of the cases were: lymphatic malformation, carotid body tumour, paraganglioma, respectively, whilst the remaining case had an immediate incisional biopsy revealing the correct diagnosis. All cases were managed by surgical excision with no evidence of recurrence after a median follow up of 6 years. CONCLUSION Otolaryngologists should be aware of ganglioneuroblastoma when establishing the differential diagnosis of a child presenting with a neck mass. Biopsy is recommended as the gold standard investigation to avoid an incorrect diagnosis.

Abstract
Ganglioneuromas are benign tumors. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice with very good prognosis. However, neuroblastomatous malignant transformation of ganglioneuromas was previously reported. We report a patient with spinal neuroblastoma recurrent from a ganglioneuroblastoma after disease free survival of 13 years. This is one of the rare examples of spinal neuroblastoma and to our knowledge the second case report with malignant transformation from a ganglioneuroblastoma or a ganglioneuroma. The present case is the only report in the literature with further genetic investigations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical presentations of paraneoplastic syndromes in neuroblastoma may multiply. Review of the clinical data and the literature on this syndrome may help in the diagnosis of neuroblastoma. OBJECTIVES In order to make more accurate diagnosis, we reviewed the clinical data and the literature on this syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between April 2007 and April 2012, 68 children were diagnosed with neuroblastoma or ganglioneuroblastoma in our institution, 9 of which presented exclusively with paraneoplastic syndromes and were not treated with chemotherapy prior to diagnosis. After the diagnosis, all patients received chemotherapy and operation on NB97 protocol. RESULTS Among 68 pediatric patients with neuroblastoma or ganglioneuroblastoma, 4 (5.9%) patients suffered from neurological complications at diagnosis, 2 (2.9%) patients had digestive tract disorders, 2 (2.9%) patients had immune diseases, and 1 (1.5%) suffered from hematological disorder (without bone marrow involvement). All paraneoplastic syndrome patients achieved complete remission on paraneoplastic syndrome before completion of chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS Neuroblastoma may present with a range of non-specific neurologic symptoms in addition to the well-known opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome and cerebellar ataxia. In any case, the presence of unexplained neurologic manifestations and other common clinical presentations such as rash, constipation, diarrhea, and especially immune disorders in an otherwise healthy child had raised the possibility of paraneoplastic syndrome due to the presence of an undiagnosed tumor.

Abstract
Ganglioneuroblastoma is a variant of neuroblastoma tumours with mature ganglion cell differentiation which occurs commonly in cervical, mediastinal and retroperitoneal locations. Approximately 90% of ganglioneuroblastomas are seen in children younger than five years old. There are 50 adult cases of ganglioneuroblastomas reported to date. Our patient is the 51st case and she is the first to be diagnosed in pregnancy. Our patient's tumour site was the thoraco-abdominal retroperitoneal space adjacent to her kidney. This tumour is generally diagnosed incidentally or by compression presentations, i.e. pain or neurological symptoms. Our patient's ultrasound scan appearances triggered suspicion of an atypical mass after presenting with loin pain. Caesarean section with tumour removal in the same session is preferred if tumour is small and localized. However in this case, there was uncertainty regarding the extent of the tumour. Therefore, the patient underwent thoracotomy after delivery to excise the thoraco-abdominal tumour, which extended from the level of the T9 to L2 vertebrae.

Abstract
PURPOSE Retroperitoneal neural tumor (RNT) is rarely excised laparoscopically, and the laparoscopic management of RNT remains controversial. We herein report 4 cases of laparoscopic excision of RNT that resulted in diverse clinical outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between August 2005 and January 2011, we performed laparoscopic excision of RNT in 4 patients. The mean tumor size was 4.5 cm. The mean operative time was 297 minutes and the mean amount of blood loss was 55 ml. The surgeries were uneventful, with no operative complications or evidence of intra-abdominal bleeding. However, 2 patients required reoperation for delayed hemorrhage and urinoma formation, respectively. RESULTS The postoperative pathological diagnoses were schwannoma in 3 patients and ganglioneuroblastoma in 1 patient. All patients were well with no signs of peripheral neuropathy or radiculopathy, and CT and/or (18)F-FDG PET/CT performed during follow-up indicated no evidence of disease. CONCLUSIONS Obtaining extensive preoperative knowledge of the source neural and vascular anatomy of the tumor is important for the surgical planning of laparoscopic resection of RNT. When a great deal of care is taken to divide the tumor and the source nerves and vital vessels, safe execution of RNT can be achieved for minimal postoperative mortality and morbidity.

Abstract
The clinical presentation of ganglioneuroblastoma is highly variable and it is not uncommon to see metastasis at presentation. Bone is the second most common site of metastasis in neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma cells usually activate osteoclasts and form osteolytic lesions. Here, we describe a patient who presented with back pain. On evaluation, X-ray and positron emission tomography-computed tomography showed mixed lytic and sclerotic vertebral metastasis, and subsequently diagnosed as ganglioneuroblastoma.

Abstract
We discuss an extremely rare case of ganglioneuroblastoma arising within a retroperitoneal mature cystic teratoma. Radiological examinations showed a cystic tumor sandwiched between the pancreas and left kidney. Surgery was scheduled because the tumor seemed to have originated from the pancreas. En-block resection of the tumor with distal pancreatectomy, splenectomy, and left adrenalectomy was performed. In terms of macroscopic appearance, the tumor mainly consisted of a unilocular cystic mass, but the presence of a smaller, solid mass was also noted within the tumor. Histopathologic examination confirmed that the cystic mass was consistent with a mature cystic teratoma of the retroperitoneum, and in addition, a ganglioneuroblastoma was evident in the solid component. Histopathologically, the ganglioneuroblastomatous area was intimately associated with dermoid tissue of the mature cystic teratoma, thus this case was diagnosed to be a mature cystic teratoma with malignant transformation. To best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of ganglioneuroblastoma arising in a mature cystic teratoma.
