Abstract
Synucleinopathies are a group of central nervous system pathologies that are characterized by the intracellular accumulation of misfolded and aggregated α-synuclein in proteinaceous depositions known as Lewy Bodies (LBs). The transition of α-synuclein from its physiological to pathological form has been associated with several post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and an increasing degree of insolubility, which also correlate with disease progression in post-mortem specimens from human patients. Neuronal expression of α-synuclein in model organisms, including Drosophila melanogaster, has been a typical approach employed to study its physiological effects. Biochemical analysis of α-synuclein solubility via high-speed ultracentrifugation with buffers of increasing detergent strength offers a potent method for identification of α-synuclein biochemical properties and the associated pathology stage. Unfortunately, the development of a robust and reproducible method for the evaluation of human α-synuclein solubility isolated from Drosophila tissues has remained elusive. Here, we tested different detergents for their ability to solubilize human α-synuclein carrying the pathological mutation A53T from the brains of aged flies. We also assessed the effect of sonication on the solubility of human α-synuclein and optimized a protocol to discriminate the relative amounts of soluble/insoluble human α-synuclein from dopaminergic neurons of the Drosophila brain. Our data established that, using a 5% SDS buffer, the three-step protocol separates cytosolic soluble, detergent-soluble and insoluble proteins in three sequential fractions according to their chemical properties. This protocol shows that sonication breaks down α-synuclein insoluble complexes from the fly brain, making them soluble in the SDS buffer and thus enriching the detergent-soluble fraction of the protocol.

Abstract
Hypothesis Additives like Tetrahydrofuran (THF) and Sodium Dodecylsulfate (SDS) improve Carbon Dioxide (CO2) hydrates thermal stability and growth rate when used separately. It has been hypothesised that combining them could improve the kinetics of growth and the thermodynamic stability of CO2 hydrates. Simulations and Experiments We exploit atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the combined impact of THF and SDS under different temperatures and concentrations. The simulation insights are verified experimentally using pendant drop tensiometry conducted at ambient pressures and high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry. Findings Our simulations revealed that the combination of both additives is synergistic at low temperatures but antagonistic at temperatures above 274.1 K due to the aggregation of SDS molecules induced by THF molecules. These aggregates effectively remove THF and CO2 from the hydrate-liquid interface, thereby reducing the driving force for hydrates growth. Experiments revealed that the critical micelle concentration of SDS in water decreases by 20% upon the addition of THF. Further experiments in the presence of THF showed that only small amounts of SDS are sufficient to increase the CO2 storage efficiency by over 40% compared to results obtained without promoters. Overall, our results provide microscopic insights into the mechanisms of THF and SDS promoters on CO2 hydrates, useful for determining the optimal conditions for hydrate growth.

Abstract
Bioremediation of surfactants in water bodies holds significant ecological importance as they are contaminants of emerging concern posing substantial threats to the aquatic environment. Microbes exhibiting special ability in terms of bioremediation of contaminants have always been reported to thrive in extraordinary environmental conditions that can be extreme in terms of temperature, lack of nutrients, and salinity. Therefore, in the present investigation, a total of 46 bacterial isolates were isolated from the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean and screened for degradation of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Further, two Gram-positive psychrotolerant bacterial strains, ASOI-01 and ASOI-02 were identified with significant SDS degradation potential. These isolates were further studied for growth optimization under different environmental conditions. The strains were characterized as Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Bacillus pumilus based on morphological, biochemical, and molecular (16S RNA gene) characteristics. The study reports 88.9% and 93.4% degradation of SDS at a concentration of 100 mgL-1, at 20 °C, and pH 7 by S. saprophyticus ASOI-01 and B. pumilus ASOI-02, respectively. The experiments were also conducted in wastewater samples where a slight reduction in degradation efficiency was observed with strains ASOI-01 and ASOI-02 exhibiting 76.83 and 64.93% degradation of SDS respectively. This study infers that these bacteria can be used for the bioremediation of anionic surfactants from water bodies and establishes the potential of extremophilic microbes for the utilization of sustainable wastewater management.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays important role to maintain homeostasis in living bodies. Here we have studied interaction of ROS generated from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with a well-known spectroscopic probe Rose Bengal (RB) encapsulated in nanoscopic sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) micelles in aqueous medium and entrapped in microscopic nylon 66 solid matrix generated using electrospinning technique. A detailed spectroscopic characterization of ROS with SDS encapsulated RB (RB-SDS) shows efficient interaction compared to that in bulk medium. The time resolved analysis on the probe based on femtosecond resolved 2D-spectrum time images collected from streak camera reveal the simultaneous existence of an ultrafast electron (∼6 ps) and a hole transfer mechanism (∼93 ps) resulting from generation of hydroxyl radicals through photobleaching of the probe in presence of H2O2. Based on the spectroscopic and time resolved studies of RB in bulk and in restricted (SDS) medium, we have further translated it for the development of an in-field prototype device which utilizes RB as a ROS sensor impregnated in a nylon thin film. The microscopic nylon solid matrix characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows porous structure for holding sample containing ROS. Our study quantitatively measures the amount of ROS by using RB embedded microfiber membrane. Thus, our developed prototype device based on RB embedded on the nylon matrix would be beneficial for the potential use in quantification of ROS in extracellular fluids and food materials.

Abstract
In this study, we review the properties of three anionic detergents, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Sarkosyl, and sodium lauroylglutamate (SLG), as they play a critical role in molecular biology research. SDS is widely used in electrophoresis and cell lysis for proteomics. Sarkosyl and, more frequently, SDS are used for the characterization of neuropathological protein fibrils and the solubilization of proteins. Many amyloid fibrils are resistant to SDS or Sarkosyl to different degrees and, thus, can be readily isolated from detergent-sensitive proteins. SLG is milder than the above two detergents and has been used in the solubilization and refolding of proteins isolated from inclusion bodies. Here, we show that both Sarkosyl and SLG have been used for protein refolding, that the effects of SLG on the native protein structure are weaker for SLG, and that SLG readily dissociates from the native proteins. We propose that SLG may be effective in cell lysis for functional proteomics due to no or weaker binding of SLG to the native proteins.

Abstract
Photocatalytic MoS2 with visible light response is considered as a promising bactericidal material owing to its non-toxicity and high antibacterial efficiency. However, photocatalysts always exist as powder, so it is difficult to settle photocatalysts on the metal surface, which limits their application in aqueous environments. To solve this problem, ultrasound and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were introduced into the co-deposition process of MoS2 and zinc matrix, so that novel MoS2-Zn coatings were obtained. In this process, ultrasound and SDS strongly promoted the dispersion and adsorption of MoS2 on the co-depositing surfaces. Then MoS2 were proved to be composited into the Zn matrix with effective structures, and the addition of SDS effectively increased the loading content of MoS2 in the MoS2-Zn coatings. Besides, the antibacterial performance of the MoS2-Zn coatings was evaluated with three typical fouling bacteria E.coli, S.aureus and B.wiedmannii. The MoS2-Zn coating showed high and broad-spectrum antibacterial properties with over 98 % inhibition rate against these three bacteria. Furthermore, it is proved that the MoS2-Zn coatings generated superoxide (·O2-) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) under visible light, which played the dominant and subordinate roles in the antibacterial process, respectively. The MoS2-Zn coatings also showed high antibacterial stability after four "light-dark" cycles. According to the results of the attached bacteria, the MoS2-Zn coatings were considered to effectively repel the living pelagic bacteria instead of killing the attached ones, which was highly environmentally friendly. The obtained MoS2-Zn coatings were considered promising in biofilm inhibiting and marine antifouling fields.

Abstract
This paper's purpose was to evaluate the interaction between three imidazole derivatives, (2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methanol (SAM3), 1,1'-methanediylbis(1H-benzimidazole (AM5) and (1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)methanol 1-hydroxymethylbenzimidazole (SAM5) on the one hand, and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the other, as antifungal combinations against Candida spp. Inhibitory activity was assessed using the agar diffusion method and Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and showed moderate inhibitory activity of single imidazole derivatives against Candida spp. The mean value of MIC ranged from 200 µg/mL (SAM3) to 312.5 µg/mL (SAM3), while for SDS the MIC was around 1000 µg/mL. When used in combination with SDS, the imidazole derivatives demonstrated an improvement in their antifungal activity. Their MIC decreased over five times for AM5 and over seven times for SAM3 and SAM5, respectively, and ranged from 26.56 µg/mL (SAM3) to 53.90 µg/mL (AM5). Most combinations displayed an additive effect while a clear synergistic effect was recorded in only a few cases. Thus, the FIC Index (FICI) with values between 0.311 and 0.375 showed a synergistic effect against Candida spp. when SDS was associated with SAM3 (three strains), SAM5 (two strains) and AM5 (one strain). The association of imidazole derivatives with SDS led to the increased release of cellular material as well as the intracellular influx of crystal violet (CV), which indicated an alteration of the membrane permeability of Candida spp. cells. This favored the synergistic effect via increasing the intracellular influx of imidazoles.

Abstract
Sudden death syndrome (SDS), caused by Fusarium virguliforme, is an important yield-limiting disease of soybean (Glycine max). From 1996 to 2022, cumulative yield losses attributed to SDS in North America totaled over 25 million metric tons, valued at over $7.8 billion USD. Seed treatments are widely used to manage SDS by reducing early season soybean root infection by F. virguliforme. Fluopyram (SDHI - FRAC 7), a fungicide seed treatment for SDS management, has been registered for use on soybean in the U.S. since 2014. A baseline sensitivity study conducted in 2014 evaluated 130 F. virguliforme isolates collected from five U.S. states to fluopyram in a mycelial growth inhibition assay and reported a mean EC50 of 3.35 mg/L. This baseline study provided the foundation for the objectives of this research: to detect any statistically significant change in fluopyram sensitivity over time and geographical regions within the U.S. and to investigate sensitivity to the fungicide pydiflumetofen. We repeated fluopyram sensitivity testing on a panel of 80 historical F. virguliforme isolates collected from 2006-2013 (76 of which were used in the baseline study) and conducted testing on 123 contemporary isolates collected from 2016-2022 from eleven U.S. states. This study estimated a mean absolute EC50 of 3.95 mg/L in isolates collected from 2006-2013 and a mean absolute EC50 of 4.19 mg/L in those collected in 2016-2022. There was no significant change in fluopyram sensitivity (P = 0.1) identified between the historical and contemporary isolates. A subset of 23 isolates, tested against pydiflumetofen under the same conditions, estimated an mean absolute EC50 of 0.11 mg/L. Moderate correlation was detected between fluopyram and pydiflumetofen sensitivity estimates (R = 0.53, P < 0.001). These findings enable future fluopyram and pydiflumetofen resistance monitoring and inform current soybean SDS management strategies in a regional and national context.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been extensively studied as drug delivery systems due to their favorable characteristics, including biocompatibility, high loading efficiency, and pH-responsive release. However, the current research predominantly focuses on LDHs as carriers for various anionic drugs, while there are only limited reports on LDHs as carriers for hydrophobic drugs. In this study, we successfully achieved the loading of a hydrophobic drug mimic, Nile red (NR), into LDHs using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as an intermediate storage medium. Furthermore, we optimized the experimental methods and varied the SDS/NR molar ratio to optimize this intercalation system. With an increase in the SDS/NR molar ratio from 2/1 to 32/1, the loading efficiency of LDH-SDS-NR for NR initially increased from 1.32% for LDH-SDS-NR_2/1 to 4.46% for LDH-SDS-NR_8/1. Then, the loading efficiency slightly decreased to 3.64% for LDH-SDS-NR_16.8/1, but then increased again to 6.31% for LDH-SDS-NR_32/1. We believe that the established method and the obtained results in this study broaden the application scope of LDHs as delivery systems for hydrophobic drugs and contribute to the further expansion of the application scope of LDHs.

Abstract
Manufactured nanoplastic particles (NPs) are indispensable for in vitro and in vivo testing and a health risk assessment of this emerging environmental contaminant is needed. The high surface area and inherent hydrophobicity of plastic materials makes the production of NPs devoid of any contaminants very challenging. In this study, we produced nanoprecipitated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) NPs (300 nm hydrodynamic diameter) with an overall yield of 0.76%. The presence of the ionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was characterized by 1H NMR, where the relative ratio of NP/surfactant was monitored on the basis of the chemical shifts characteristic of PET and SDS. For a wide range of surfactant/NP ratios (17:100 to 1.2:100), the measured zeta potential changed from -42.10 to -34.93 mV, but with an NP concentration up to 100 μg/mL, no clear differences were observed in the cellular assays performed in protein-rich media on primary human cells. The remaining impurities contributed to the outcome of the biological assays applied in protein-free buffers, such as human red blood cell hemolysis. The presence of SDS increased the NP-induced hemolysis by 1.5% in protein-rich buffer and by 7.5% in protein-free buffer. As the size, shape, zeta potential, and contaminants of NPs may all be relevant parameters for the biological effects of NPs, the relative quantification of impurities exemplified in our work by the application of 1H NMR for PET NPs and the ionic surfactant SDS could be a valuable auxiliary method in the quality control of manufactured NPs.

Abstract
Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder caused by biallelic mutations in the Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome (SBDS) gene. SBDS protein is involved in ribosome biogenesis; therefore SDS is classified as a ribosomopathy. SBDS is localized at mitotic spindles and stabilizes microtubules. Previously, we showed that SBDS interacts with ring finger protein 2 (RNF2) and is degraded through RNF2-dependent ubiquitination. In this study, we investigated when and where SBDS interacts with RNF2 and the effects of the interaction on cells. We found that SBDS co-localized with RNF2 on centrosomal microtubules in the mitotic phase (M phase), whereas SBDS and RNF2 localized to the nucleolus and nucleoplasm in the interphase, respectively. The microtubule-binding assay revealed that SBDS interacted directly with microtubules and RNF2 interacted with SBDS bound to microtubules. In addition, SBDS was ubiquitinated and degraded by RNF2 during the M phase. Moreover, RNF2 overexpression accelerated mitotic progression. These findings suggest that SBDS delays mitotic progression, and RNF2 releases cells from suppression through the ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of SBDS. The interaction between SBDS and RNF2 at mitotic spindles might be involved in mitotic progression as a novel regulatory cascade.

Abstract
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is a well-known protein denaturing agent. A less known property of this detergent is that it can activate or inactivate some enzymes at sub-denaturing concentrations. In this work we explore the effect of SDS on the ATPase activity of a hyper-thermophilic and a mesophilic Cu(I) ATPases reconstituted in mixed micelles of phospholipids and a non-denaturing detergent. An iterative procedure was used to evaluate the partition of SDS between the aqueous and the micellar phases, allowing to determine the composition of micelles prepared from phospholipid/detergent mixtures. The incubation of enzymes with SDS in the presence of different amounts of phospholipids reveals that higher SDS concentrations are required to obtain the same degree of inactivation when the initial concentration of phospholipids is increased. Remarkably, we found that, if represented as a function of the mole fraction of SDS in the micelle, the degree of inactivation obtained at different amounts of amphiphiles converges to a single inactivation curve. To interpret this result, we propose a simple model involving active and inactive enzyme molecules in equilibrium. This model allowed us to estimate the Gibbs free energy change for the inactivation process and its derivative with respect to the mole fraction of SDS in the micellar phase, the latter being a measure of the susceptibility of the enzyme to SDS. Our results showed that the inactivation free energy changes are similar for both proteins. Conversely, susceptibility to SDS is significantly lower for the hyperthermophilic ATPase, suggesting an inverse relation between thermophilicity and susceptibility to SDS.

Abstract
In a survey of the International Space Station (ISS), the most common pathogenic bacterium identified in samples from the air, water and surfaces was Staphylococcus aureus. While growth under microgravity is known to cause physiological changes in microbial pathogens, including shifts in antibacterial sensitivity, its impact on S. aureus is not well understood. Using high-aspect ratio vessels (HARVs) to generate simulated microgravity (SMG) conditions in the lab, we found S. aureus lipid profiles are altered significantly, with a higher presence of branch-chained fatty acids (BCFAs) (14.8% to 35.4%) with a concomitant reduction (41.3% to 31.4%) in straight-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) under SMG. This shift significantly increased the sensitivity of this pathogen to daptomycin, a membrane-acting antibiotic, leading to 12.1-fold better killing under SMG. Comparative assays with two additional compounds, i.e., SDS and violacein, confirmed S. aureus is more susceptible to membrane-disrupting agents, with 0.04% SDS and 0.6 mg/L violacein resulting in 22.9- and 12.8-fold better killing in SMG than normal gravity, respectively. As humankind seeks to establish permanent colonies in space, these results demonstrate the increased potency of membrane-active antibacterials to control the presence and spread of S. aureus, and potentially other pathogens.

Abstract
We report the solution behavior, oligomerization state, and structural details of myotoxin-II purified from the venom of Bothrops asper in the presence and absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and multiple lipids, as examined by analytical ultracentrifugation and nuclear magnetic resonance. Molecular functional and structural details of the myotoxic mechanism of group II Lys-49 phospholipase A2 homologues have been only partially elucidated so far, and conflicting observations have been reported in the literature regarding the monomeric vs. oligomeric state of these toxins in solution. We observed the formation of a stable and discrete, hexameric form of myotoxin-II, but only in the presence of small amounts of SDS. In SDS-free medium, myotoxin-II was insensitive to mass action and remained monomeric at all concentrations examined (up to 3 mg/ml, 218.2 μM). At SDS concentrations above the critical micelle concentration, only dimers and trimers were observed, and at intermediate SDS concentrations, aggregates larger than hexamers were observed. We found that the amount of SDS required to form a stable hexamer varies with protein concentration, suggesting the need for a precise stoichiometry of free SDS molecules. The discovery of a stable hexameric species in the presence of a phospholipid mimetic suggests a possible physiological role for this oligomeric form, and may shed light on the poorly understood membrane-disrupting mechanism of this myotoxic protein class.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The type and concentration of surfactants affect the rheological behavior of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) chains in hydrogels, influencing the microstructure and mechanical properties of HPMC cryogels. EXPERIMENTS Hydrogels and cryogels containing HPMC, AOT (bis (2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate or dioctyl sulfosuccinate salt sodium, two C8 chains and sulfosuccinate head group), SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate, one C12 chain and sulfate head group), and sodium sulfate (salt, no hydrophobic chain) at different concentrations were investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), rheological measurements, and compressive tests. FINDINGS SDS micelles bound to the HPMC chains building "bead necklaces", increasing considerably the storage modulus G' values of the hydrogels and the compressive modulus E values of the corresponding cryogels. The dangling SDS micelles promoted multiple junction points among the HPMC chains. AOT micelles and HPMC chains did not form "bead necklaces". Although AOT increased the G' values of the hydrogels, the resulting cryogels were softer than pure HPMC cryogels. The AOT micelles are probably embedded between HPMC chains. The AOT short double chains rendered softness and low friction to the cryogel cell walls. Therefore, this work demonstrated that the structure of the surfactant tail can tune the rheological behavior of HPMC hydrogels and hence the microstructure of the resulting cryogels.

Abstract
This paper describes an inclusive biophysical study elucidating the interaction of therapeutic drug azithromycin (Azith) with hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL). Spectroscopic and computational tools have been employed to study the interaction of Azith with HEWL at pH 7.4. The fluorescence quenching constant values (Ksv) exhibited a decrease with the increase in temperature which revealed the occurrence of static quenching mechanism between Azith and HEWL. The thermodynamic data demonstrated that hydrophobic interactions were predominantly involved in the Azith-HEWL interaction. The negative value of standard Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) stated that the Azith-HEWL complex formed via spontaneous molecular interactions. The effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant monomers on the binding propensity of Azith with HEWL was insignificant at lower concentrations however the binding significantly decreased at increased concentrations of the former. Far-UV CD data revealed alteration in the secondary structure of HEWL in the presence of Azith and the overall HEWL conformation changed. Molecular docking results revealed that the binding of Azith with HEWL takes place through hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The computational study of surfactants and self-assembly is challenging because 1) models need to reflect chemistry-specific interactions, and 2) self-assembled structures are difficult to equilibrate with conventional molecular dynamics. We propose to overcome these challenges with a multiscale simulation approach where relative entropy minimization transfers chemically-detailed information from all-atom (AA) simulations to coarse-grained (CG) models that can be simulated using field-theoretic methods. Field-theoretic simulations are not limited by intrinsic physical time scales like diffusion and allow for rigorous equilibration via free energy minimization. This approach should enable the study of properties that are difficult to obtain by particle-based simulations. SIMULATION WORK We apply this workflow to sodium dodecylsulfate. To ensure chemical fidelity we present an AA force field calibrated against interfacial tension experiments. We generate CG models from AA simulation trajectories and show that particle-based and field-theoretic simulations of the CG model reproduce AA simulations and experimental measurements. FINDINGS The workflow captures the complex balance of interactions in a multicomponent system ultimately described by an atomistic model. The resulting CG models can study complex 3D phases like double or alternating gyroids, and reproduce salt effects on properties like aggregation number and shape transitions.

Abstract
Introduction During several years of work in Sudan, we occasionally had been confronted with patients who presented clinical features highly suggestive of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) however direct agglutination test (DAT) readings that were either at the high negative or low positive titre range. Inquiries on the fate of those particular patients revealed mortality, undetermined diagnosis or that in some of them leukaemia was finally diagnosed. Gap statement Investigate as to what extent haematological malignancies (HMs) interfere with VL diagnosis. Aim Evaluate specificity of DAT version newly developed in this study wherein sodium dodecyle sulphate (SDS) was incorporated as a test sample denaturant in comparison with a standard reference wherein β-mercaptoethanol (β-ME) was used in test execution. Methodology Seventy plasma samples from patients with HMs were collected and tested in a primary DAT version (P-DAT). The results obtained were compared with those of the rK39 strip test as VL reference diagnostic. HM samples revealing titres higher than the start dilution (1 : 100) in P-DAT were further tested in a β-ME- and urea-modified DAT versions. The specificity of the newly developed SDS-DAT was assessed against that of β-ME-DAT and rK39 strip tests as current reference diagnostics for VL. Results Seven out of 70 patients with HMs scored positive outcomes (titre ≥1 : 3200) in P-DAT and four in the reference rK39 strip test. Of the seven that tested positive in P-DAT or four in the reference rK39, none reacted at titre >1 : 100 in the SDS-DAT. Significant reduction in non-specific agglutination reactions was achieved as a result in respect to the HM plasma samples (P value <0.05). Conclusion To establish desired specificity for VL diagnosis in respect to HMs and subsequently minimize or avoid serious side effects due to unjustified anti-leishmanials prescription the combined application of the SDS-DAT here described and an improved version of the rK39 for confirmation is recommended.

Abstract
Atomoxetine hydrochloride (ATX) is a potent and non-stimulant drug which was approved for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Owing to its importance, two green, simple and validated spectrofluorimetric methods were developed for its sensitive assay in pure and capsule forms. The first method (Method I) relied on measuring the enhanced fluorescence of ATX by the use of sodium dodecyl sulfate in alkaline medium at λ ex 227 nm/λ em 298 nm. The second method (Method II) involved complex formation of ATX with Erythrosine B (EB) in aqueous acidic solution resulting in quantitative quenching of the EB naive fluorescence. This complex was formed in the presence of Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 4.0). The difference in fluorescence intensity was measured at λ ex 527/λ em550 nm. The calibration curves were linear through the ranges of 0.2-2.0 µg ml-1 for Method I, 0.2-4.0 µg ml-1 for Method II with good correlation coefficient (r = 0.9998) for both methods. The suggested methods were perfectly applied for determination of ATX in its commercial capsules and content uniformity test. The greenness of the proposed methods was confirmed by three different assessment tools and it was found that both methods were green, eco-friendly and environmentally safe.

Abstract
Seed treatments for the management of sudden death syndrome (SDS) caused by Fusarium virguliforme are available in the United States and Canada; however, side-by-side comparisons of these seed treatments are lacking. Sixteen field experiments were established in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin, United States, and Ontario, Canada, in 2019 and 2020 to evaluate seed treatment combinations. Treatments included a nontreated check (NTC), fungicide and insecticide base seed treatments (base), fluopyram, base + fluopyram, base + saponin extracts from Chenopodium quinoa, base + fluopyram + heat-killed Burkholderia rinojenses, base + pydiflumetofen, base + thiabendazole + heat-killed B. rinojenses, and base + thiabendazole + C. quinoa extracts + heat-killed B. rinojenses. Treatments were tested on SDS moderately resistant and susceptible soybean cultivars at each location. Overall, NTC and base had the most root rot, most foliar disease index (FDX), and lowest yield. Base + fluopyram and base + pydiflumetofen were most effective for managing SDS. Moderately resistant cultivars reduced FDX in both years but visual root rot was greater on the moderately resistant than the susceptible cultivars in 2020. Yield response to cultivar was also inconsistent between the 2 years. In 2020, the susceptible cultivar provided significantly more yield than the moderately resistant cultivar. Treatment effect for root rot and FDX was similar in field and greenhouse evaluations. These results reinforce the need to include root rot evaluations in addition to foliar disease evaluations in the breeding process for resistance to F. virguliforme and highlights the importance of an integrated SDS management plan because not a single management tactic alone provides adequate control of the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Scaffolds for tissue engineering can be received by whole organ decellularization while maintaining the site-specific extracellular matrix and the vascular tree. One among other decellularization techniques is the perfusion-based method using specific agents e.g. SDS for the elimination of cellular components. While SDS can disrupt the composition of the extracellular matrix and impair the adherence and growth of site-specific cells there are indications that xenogeneic cell types may benefit from protein denaturation by using higher detergent concentrations. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of two different SDS-concentrations (i.e. 0.66% and 3%) on the ability of human endothelial cells to adhere and proliferate in an acellular rat kidney scaffold. MATERIAL AND METHODS Acellular rat kidney scaffold was obtained by perfusion-based decellularization through the renal artery using a standardized protocol including SDS at concentrations of 0.66% or 3%. Subsequently cell seeding was performed with human immortalized endothelial cells EA.hy 926 via the renal artery. Recellularized kidneys were harvested after five days of pressure-controlled dynamic culture followed sectioning, histochemical and immunohistochemical staining as well as semiquantitative analysis. RESULTS Efficacy of decellularization was verified by absence of cellular components as well as preservation of ultrastructure and adhesive proteins of the extracellular matrix. In semiquantitative analysis of recellularization, cell count after five days of dynamic culture more than doubled when using the gentle decellularization protocol with a concentration of SDS at 0.66% compared to 3%. Detectable cells maintained their endothelial phenotype and presented proliferative behavior while only a negligible fraction underwent apoptosis. CONCLUSION Recellularization of acellular kidney scaffold with endothelial cells EA.hy 926 seeded through the renal artery benefits from gentle decellularization procedure. Because of that, decellularization with a SDS concentration at 0.66% should be preferred in further studies and coculture experiments.

Abstract
Amyloid fibrils have been linked to a number of diseases. Surfactants imitate plasma membrane lipids and induce amyloid fibrils. This study examined the effects of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at pH 4.5 on equine skeletal muscle myoglobin (E-Mb). To analyze the effect of SDS on aggregation and amyloid-fibril formation to E-Mb, we used various spectroscopic techniques (turbidity, light scattering, intrinsic fluorescence, ThT fluorescence, and circular dichroism (CD)), electrophoretic, and microscopic techniques. Turbidity, SDS-PAGE, and light scattering all indicated the formation of E-Mb aggregates at SDS concentrations ranging from 0.2 mM to 1.0 mM. In the presence of 0.4 mM SDS, far-UV CD and TEM data indicate that E-MB forms amorphous aggregates. ThT binding, Far-UV CD, and TEM findings indicate that E-Mb forms amyloid-like structures in the presence of 0.6-1.0 mM SDS. However, no aggregation was seen at SDS concentrations above 1 mM. In the presence of high SDS concentrations (> 1 mM), the E-Mb exhibited native-like α-helical structure. As a result, SDS exhibited three distinct behaviors: amorphous aggregates, amyloid-fibrils, and helix-inducer. These findings also shed light on how amyloid fibrils are formed when anionic surfactants are introduced, which is a significant takeaway.

Abstract
The electro kinetic method is one of the common methods in the process of pollutants removal. In this paper, the process of removing copper from contaminated soil has been studied. Some improved conditions were used in this process; the pH of the solution was changed for each experiment during the first three experiments. SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) has been used as an activator to improve the removal process by washing the soil with it. Date palm fibers (DPF) were also used as an adsorbent material to counteract the reverse flow that occurred during the removal process, thus increasing the removal value. Various experiments were performed, where it was observed that by decreasing the pH, the removal capacity was increased. The removal capacity in the three different experiments were 70% at pH 4, 57% at pH 7, and 45% at pH 10. The use of SDS as a solution in the process increased the dissolution and absorption of copper from the soil surface and then increased the removal capacity (74%). The use of DPF to counter the osmosis flow has been successful in adsorbing the pollutants (copper) returning from this flow, and thus this material can be considered good from an economic and environmental aspect when compared to other commercial adsorbents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated factors associated with anxiety and depression among patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). This study aimed to investigate associated factors and the prevalence of anxiety and depression in this special group in China. METHODS Data from 511 patients with ED aged 18-60 years were collected between July 2021 and April 2022. The 5-item International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire, self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) were used to evaluate erectile function, anxiety and depression, respectively. Univariate analysis and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to explore the associated factors of depression and anxiety. RESULTS The prevalence of anxiety and depression among ED patients was 38.16% and 64.97%, respectively. The mean anxiety index score was 47.37 ± 6.69 points, and the mean depression index was 54.72 ± 9.10 points. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that worse ED, low education level, and smoking were positively associated with increased risk of anxiety and depression. In addition, younger age, longer onset time, and irregular sleep were positively associated with high risk of anxiety, and irregular exercise was associated with severe depression. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of depression and anxiety in ED patients is high, and the severity of ED, age, education level, smoking, onset time, regular sleep, and exercise were associated with anxiety or depression. Reversible risk factors should be avoided and individualized psychological support services are necessary for ED patients.

Abstract
The translocator protein (TSPO) is a ubiquitous transmembrane protein of great pharmacological interest thanks to its high affinity to many drug ligands. The only high-resolution 3D-structure known for mammalian TSPO was obtained by NMR for the mouse mTSPO in DPC detergent only in presence of the high-affinity PK 11195 ligand. An atomic structure of free-ligand mTSPO is still missing to better understand the interaction of ligands with mTSPO and their effects on the protein conformation. Here, we decipher the solution structures of the recombinant mTSPO without ligand both in (i) SDS, the detergent used to extract and purify the protein from E. coli inclusion bodies, and (ii) DPC, the detergent used to solve the PK 11195-binding mTSPO NMR structure. We report partially refolded and less flexible mTSPO helices in DPC compared to SDS. Besides, DPC stabilizes the tertiary structure of mTSPO, as shown by a higher intrinsic Trp fluorescence and changes in indole environment. We evaluate by SEC-MALLS that ∼135 SDS and ∼100 DPC molecules are bound to mTSPO. SEC-small-angle X-ray (SAXS) and neutron (SANS) scattering confirm a larger mTSPO-detergent complex in SDS than in DPC. Using the contrast-matching technique in SEC-SANS, we demonstrate that mTSPO conformation is more compact and less flexible in DPC than in SDS. Combining ab initio modeling with SANS, we confirm that mTSPO conformation is less elongated in DPC than in SDS. However, the free-ligand mTSPO envelope in DPC is not as compact as the PK 11195-binding protein NMR structure, the ligand stiffening the protein.

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of detergents based on sodium dodecyl sulfoxide (SDS) on the functional parameters of collared peccary frozen-thawed sperm. Semen aliquots from ten individuals were diluted in a Tris-egg yolk-glycerol extender alone or with 0.5% Equex STM® paste or SDS (at 0.1%, 0.3% or 0.5% (v/v) concentration). Samples were fast frozen in liquid nitrogen with a post-thaw evaluation of motility, membrane functionality and integrity, mitochondrial activity, sperm binding ability and thermal resistance. The treatments without SDS (41.8 ± 3.5%) and those containing Equex (41.8 ± 4.4%) or 0.1% SDS (41.2 ± 5.5%) provided greater sperm motility (p < 0.05) than those containing SDS 0.3% (30.5 ± 4.7%) and 0.5% (31.2 ± 6.3%). Immediately after thawing, only treatments containing 0.1% SDS effectively preserved sperm straightness (STR) when compared to the negative control. All treatments preserved the amplitude of lateral head (ALH) and straightness (STR) during a thermal resistance test (p > 0.05), but SDS 0.5% impaired the membrane functionality and mitochondrial activity after thawing (p < 0.05). All treatments provided a similar recovery of sperm binding ability after thawing (p < 0.05). Our results showed that the addition of 0.1% SDS to the Tris-yolk-glycerol extender optimized the freeze-thaw recovery of peccary semen.

Abstract
The study aimed to design a geographic theoretical model for school dental services (SDS) in Al-Madinah, Saudi Arabia (SA), using a geographic information system (GIS). The location of all primary public schools and the student population at each school were obtained from the General Administration of Education in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah Region website. The geographic modeling for SDS was analyzed using GIS according to two models. A scenario was developed to simulate the demand for dental care for the two models based on schoolchildren's estimated oral health profile. The areas with the higher number of schools; higher number of students; and dense child population as presented in the map suggest the future location of SDS. The total number of dentists required to work in SDS settings was 415 for the first model, and 277 for the second model. The suggested average number of dentists per district in the highest child population density districts is 18 dentists in the first model, compared to 14 in the second model. Establishing SDS is suggested as a solution to the persistently high prevalence of dental caries among schoolchildren in Al-Madinah and SA in general. A model was suggested for SDS with a guide of the proposed SDS locations and the number of dentists to hire for the services to meet the child population's oral health needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early Onset Scoliosis (EOS) is a progressive spinal deformity in children, and a potentially life-threatening disease. "Growth-friendly" surgical techniques aim to control the deformity, while allowing the spine and trunk to maintain growth. Current "growth-friendly" systems such as the traditional growing rod (TGR) and magnetically controlled growing rod (MCGR) have limitations that reduce their efficacy and cost-effectiveness. Recently, two "growth-friendly" systems have been developed that mitigate many of these limitations, the Spring Distraction System (SDS) and the One Way Self-Expanding Rod (OWSER). The purpose of the multicenter BiPOWR trial is to investigate, describe and compare the 1-year limited-efficacy and -safety of both strategies in the treatment of neuromuscular EOS. METHODS After informed consent, 28 neuromuscular EOS patients will be randomized to receive either the SDS or the OWSER. Patients and caregivers will be blinded to allocation until after surgery. Primary outcomes will be maintenance of coronal curve correction and the occurrence of serious adverse events. In addition, spinal growth, implant lengthening, and perioperative findings are recorded systematically. At each follow-up moment, the Early Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) will be used to assess health-related quality of life. All outcomes will be compared between groups. DISCUSSION The BiPOWR trial is the first randomized controlled trial that compares two specific "growth-friendly" implants in a specified EOS population. Abstract
In molecularly imprinted polymers, non-specific interactions are generally based on weak forces between the polymer surface and the sample matrix. Thus, additives able to interfere with such interactions should be able to significantly reduce any non-specific binding effect. Surfactants represent an interesting class of substances as they are cheap and easily available. Here, we present a study of the effect of three surfactants (the anionic sodium dodecylsulphate, SDS, the cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the non-ionic polyoxyethylene-(20)-sorbitan monolaurate Tween 20) on the binding affinity of a 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T)-imprinted polymer for the template and its analogue 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The experimental results indicate that increasing amounts of surfactant decrease the binding affinity for the ligands strongly for the ionic ones, and more weakly for the non-ionic one. This effect is general, as it occurs for both 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D and for both the imprinted and the not-imprinted polymers. It also proves that the magnitude of this effect mainly depends on the presence or absence of an ionic charge, and that the hydrophobic "tail" of surfactants plays only a minor role.

Abstract
Background Tissue engineering of native vessels is an alternative approach for patients with vascular disease who lack sufficient saphenous vein or other suitable conduits for autologous vascular graft. Moreover, the harvest of vessels prolongs the surgical procedure and it may lead to the morbidity of donor site in elder patients: therefore, it seems that the use of tissue-engineered vessels would be an attractive and less invasive substitute for autologous vascular grafts. Apelin-13 plays a pivotal role in cell proliferation, survival, and attachment; therefore, covalent attachment of apelin-13 to the acellular scaffolds might be a favorable approach for improving recellularization efficacy. Methods In the present study, the decellularization process was performed using various detergents. Afterward, the efficacy of decellularization procedure was evaluated using multiple approaches including assessment of DNA, hydroxyproline, and GAG content as well as Masson’s trichrome and orcein staining used for collagen and elastin determination. Subsequently, the scaffold was bioconjugated with apelin-13 using the EDC-NHS linker and acellular scaffolds were recellularized using fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells. SEM images and characterization methods were also used to evaluate the effect of apelin-13 attachment to the acellular scaffold on tissue recellularization. We also developed a novel strategy to eliminate the remnant detergents from the scaffold and increase cell viability by incubating acellular scaffolds with Bio-Beads SM-2 resin. Testometric tensile testing machine was also used for the assessment of mechanical properties and uniaxial tensile strength of decellularized and recellularized vessels compared to that of native tissues. Results Our results proposed 16-h perfusion of 0.25% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) + 0.5% Triton X-100 combination to the vessel as an optimal decellularization protocol in terms of cell elimination as well as extracellular matrix preservation. Furthermore, the results demonstrated considerable elevation of cell adhesion and proliferation in scaffolds bioconjugated with apelin-13. The immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of CD31, α-SMA, and vimentin markers suggested placement of seeded cells in the suitable sites and considerable elevation of cell attachment within the scaffolds bioconjugated with apelin-13 compared to the non-bioconjugated, and decellularized groups. Moreover, the quantitative analysis of IHC staining of CD31, α-SMA, and vimentin markers suggested considerable elevation in the number of endothelial, smooth muscle, and fibroblast cells in the recellularized scaffolds bioconjugated with apelin-13 group (1.4% ± 0.02, 6.66% ± 0.23, and 9.87% ± 0.13%, respectively) compared to the non-bioconjugated scaffolds (0.03% ± 0.01, 0.28% ± 0.01, and 1.2% ± 0.09%, respectively) and decellularized groups (0.03% ± 0.007, 0.05% ± 0.01, and 0.13% ±0.005%, respectively). Although the maximum strain to the rupture was reduced in tissues decellularized using 0.5% SDS and CHAPS compared to that of native ones (116% ± 6.79, 139.1% ± 3.24, and 164% ± 8.54%, respectively), ultimate stress was decreased in all decellularized and recellularized groups. Besides, our results indicated that cell viability on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th day was 100.79% ± 0.7, 100.34% ± 0.08, and 111.24% ± 1.7% for the decellularized rat aorta conjugated with apelin-13, which was incubated for 48-h with Bio-Beads SM-2, and 73.37% ± 7.99, 47.6% ± 11.69, and 27.3% ± 7.89% for decellularized rat aorta scaffolds conjugated with apelin-13 and washed 48-h by PBS, respectively. These findings reveal that the incubation of the scaffold with Bio-Beads SM-2 is a novel and promising approach for increasing cell viability and growth within the scaffold. Conclusions In conclusion, our results provide a platform in which xenograft vessels are decellularized properly in a short time, and the recellularization process is significantly improved after the bioconjugation of the acellular scaffold with apelin-13 in terms of cell adhesion and viability within the scaffold. Abstract
Vitiligo is a common depigmenting skin disease with profound psychosocial impacts. Depression is one of the most common mental distress. Social support has a significant impact on the psychological status of patients. The aim of this study is to investigate the depression and social support status of patients with vitiligo in China, and further explore the correlation between social support and depression. The outpatients with vitiligo were investigated face to face with SDS (Self-rating depression scale) and SSRS (Social support rate scale). The mean SDS score of the patients was 44.05 ± 6.76, which was significantly higher than Chinese norms (p = 0.000). Female patients, unmarried, disease at rapid progressive stage and skin lesions at the exposed site had higher SDS scores (all p < 0.05). The scores of total social support, subjective support, objective support and support availability were lower than Chinese norms (all p < 0.01), and all were negatively correlated with SDS scores (all p < 0.001). In conclusion, low social support is one of the risk factors for depression in patients with vitiligo in China. More support and acceptance should be given to the patients.

Abstract
Although the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, has been used for more than half a century as a versatile and efficient protein denaturant for protein separation and size estimation, there is still controversy about its mode of interaction with proteins. The term "rod-like" structures for the complexes that form between SDS and protein, originally introduced by Tanford, is not sufficiently descriptive and does not distinguish between the two current vying models, namely protein-decorated micelles a.k.a. the core-shell model (in which denatured protein covers the surface of micelles) versus beads-on-a-string model (where unfolded proteins are surrounded by surfactant micelles). Thanks to a combination of structural, kinetic and computational work particularly within the last 5-10 years, it is now possible to rule decisively in favor of the core-shell model. This is supported unambiguously by a combination of calorimetric and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques and confirmed by increasingly sophisticated molecular dynamics simulations. Depending on the SDS:protein ratio and the protein molecular mass, the formed structures can range from multiple partly unfolded protein molecules surrounding a single shared micelle to a single polypeptide chain decorating multiple micelles. We also have much new insight into how this species forms. It is preceded by the binding of small numbers of SDS molecules which subsequently grow by accretion. Time-resolved SAXS analysis reveals an asymmetric attack by SDS micelles followed by distribution of the increasingly unfolded protein around the micelle. The compactness of the protein chain continues to evolve at higher SDS concentrations according to single-molecule studies, though the protein remains completely denatured on the tertiary structural level. SDS denaturation can be reversed by addition of nonionic surfactants that absorb SDS forming mixed micelles, leaving the protein free to refold. Refolding can occur in parallel tracks if only a fraction of the protein is initially stripped of SDS. SDS unfolding is nearly always reversible unless carried out at low pH, where charge neutralization can lead to superclusters of protein-surfactant complexes. With the general mechanism of SDS denaturation now firmly established, it largely remains to explore how other ionic surfactants (including biosurfactants) may diverge from this path.

Abstract
Safe and cost-effective antimicrobial fabrics (e.g., face masks and air filters) are conducive to preventing the spread and transmission of respiratory microorganisms in food processing plants and retail establishments. The objective of this study was to coat fabrics with two commonly used compounds in the food industry: levulinic acid (LVA) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and determine the antimicrobial efficacy of the coated fabrics against bacterial solutions, aerosols, and influenza A virus subtype H1N1. In addition, air permeability and shelf-life of the LVA/SDS coated fabrics were also examined. Nonwoven fabrics were dip-coated with three concentrations (w/v, 0.5% LVA + 0.1% SDS, 1% LVA + 0.5% SDS, and 2% LVA + 1% SDS) of LVA and SDS and challenged with bacterial solutions (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, ca. 7.0 log CFU/coupon) for a contact time of 3, 5, and 10 min. The coated fabrics were also challenged with S. aureus aerosol and H1N1 virus following standard operations of ASTM F2101-19 and ISO 18184:2019, respectively. The 1% LVA + 0.5% SDS coated fabrics showed potent antibacterial efficacy against both bacterial solutions (>6.0-log reduction to under the detection limit of 1.0 log CFU/coupon for S. aureus; ca. 1.0-log reduction for E. coli) and aerosols (>3.6-log reduction to under the detection limit), with greater inactivation occurring at higher concentrations and longer exposure time. Moreover, the coated fabrics inactivated >99% of the H1N1 virus. The shelf-life of the coated fabrics was stable within 12 months and the air permeability was not adversely affected with the coating concentrations less than 1% LVA + 0.5% SDS. Results reveal these low-cost and safe materials have the potential to be used to coat fabrics in the food industry to combat the spread and transmission of pathogens.

Abstract
The extraction of microplastics from complex environmental matrices, such as sewage sludge, has proven challenging because of their high organic content. A common procedure for the extraction of microplastics from sludge involves conducting a chemical digestion to reduce the amount of organic matter in the sample, followed by a density separation of microplastics. In order to increase the reliability of the density-based separation, an optimisation of the chemical digestion is needed. The aim of this study was to maximise the total solids and carbon content reduction of sludge by optimising the sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) pretreatment and the duration of H2O2 digestion. A reduction in total solids by 95.6% and in carbon content by 98.1% were achieved with the optimised digestion method, which involved an application of 1% SDS and a 2-day H2O2 treatment in the first digestion step. The inclusion of the SDS pretreatment significantly increased the reduction of total solids and carbon content. The optimised digestion process had no significant visible effects on tested reference microplastics and provided an extraction efficiency of 84% for 150 μm reference microspheres and 72% for 650 μm long microfibres. To enable the application of the optimised digestion process to other types of sludges, the consumption of SDS and H2O2 were also presented as per grams of organic matter in the untreated sludge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite inter-individual variations in pubertal timing, growth references are conventionally constructed relative to chronological age (C-age). Thus, they are based on reference populations containing a mix of prepubertal and pubertal individuals, making them of limited use for detecting abnormal growth during adolescence. Recently we developed new types of height and weight references, with growth aligned to age at onset of the pubertal growth spurt (P-age). Here, we aim to develop a corresponding reference for pubertal BMI. METHODS The QEPS-height and weight models were used to define a corresponding QEPS-BMI model. QEPS-BMI was modified by the same individual, constitutional weight-height-factor (WHF) as computed for QEPS-weight. QEPS-BMI functions were computed with QEPS weight and height functions fitted on longitudinal measurements from 1418 individuals (698 girls) from GrowUp1990Gothenburg cohort. These individual BMI functions were used to develop BMI references aligned for height at AgeP5; when 5% of specific puberty-related (P-function) height had been attained. Pubertal timing, stature at pubertal onset, and childhood BMI, were investigated in subgroups of children from the cohort GrowUp1974Gothenburg using the new references. RESULTS References (median, standard deviation score (SDS)) were generated for total BMI (QEPS-functions), for ongoing prepubertal growth (QE-function) vs C-age, and for total BMI and separated into BMI specific to puberty (P-function) and BMI gain from ongoing basic growth (QES-functions), allowing individual growth to be aligned based on P-age. Growth in basic BMI was greater than average for children categorized as tall and/or with high-BMI at puberty-start. In children categorized as short at puberty-start, P-function-related-BMI was greater than average. CONCLUSIONS Use of these new pubertal BMI references will make it possible for the first time to consider individual variations owing to pubertal timing when evaluating BMI. This will improve the detection of abnormal changes in body composition when used in combination with pubertal height and weight references also abnormal growth. Other benefits in the clinic will include improved growth monitoring during treatment for children who are overweight/obese or underweight. Furthermore, in research settings these new references represent a novel tool for exploring human growth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical exercise therapy is of proven efficacy in the treatment of adults with depression, but corresponding evidence is lacking in depressed adolescent inpatients. The aim of this study was to document the effect of add-on treatment with structured physical exercise in a clinical population of adolescents hospitalized for depression and anxiety in a psychiatric hospital. METHODS A group of 52 adolescent inpatients was randomly assigned to a physical exercise or control program three to four times per week over a six-week period (20 hours in total). The primary outcome was the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) for evaluation of depression and anxiety symptoms. Secondary outcomes were psychological self-assessments, diagnostic interviews, and physical examinations. RESULTS Six participants were lost in each group, leaving 20 inpatients each in the intervention and control groups. A linear mixed model with F-test revealed a significant interaction in favor of physical exercise in reducing the mean depression score (HADS-D) by 3.8 points [95% (CI), range 1.8 to 5.7], compared to a mean reduction score of 0.7 [95% (CI), range -0,7 to 2.0] in the control group. No significant interaction was found for anxiety symptoms (HADS-A). LIMITATIONS The investigation was limited to the six-week hospital window and the small sample size prevented exploring differences in social characteristics. CONCLUSION Structured physical exercise add-on therapy integrated into the psychiatric hospitalization of adolescents has led to a reduction in their depressive symptoms, demonstrating its effectiveness in the care of adolescent inpatients with depression.

Abstract
Intended drug delivery to a target without adverse effect is one of the major criteria for its acceptance in real use. Herein, we have made an attempt to explore the delivery efficacy of SDS surfactant in a monomer and micellar stage during the delivery of model drug, Toluidine Blue (TB) from micellar cavity to DNA. Molecular recognition of pre-micellar SDS encapsulated TB with DNA occurs at a rate constant (k1~652 s-1). On the contrary, no significant release of encapsulated TB at micellar concentration was observed within the experimental time frame. This originated from the higher binding affinity of TB towards the nano cavity of SDS at micellar concentration which doesn't allow the delivery of TB from the nano cavity of SDS micelle to DNA. Thus, molecular recognition controls the extent of DNA recognition by TB which in turn modulates the rate of delivery of TB from SDS in a concentration dependent morphology.

Abstract
The anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is homologous to the cellular membrane lipids, and is known to stimulate amyloid fibrillation in several proteins. However, the mechanism by which SDS influences aggregation and structural changes in succinylated protein has not been determined. In this study, we observed the effects of variable SDS concentrations on succinyl-ConA aggregation at pH 3.5 and proposed a possible mechanism of SDS-induced succinyl-ConA aggregation. We used several biophysical techniques to identify the changes caused by SDS. Our results suggest that SDS stimulates succinyl-ConA aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner. From turbidity measurements, it was evident that a very low concentration (<0.1 mM) of SDS did not induce succinyl-ConA aggregation and proteins remained soluble. However, aggregations were observed at 0.1-2.5 mM SDS, which then dissipated at SDS concentrations above 2.5 mM. Far-UV CD results suggest that the β-sheet secondary structure of succinyl-ConA transformed into the cross-β-sheet structure in the presence of aggregating SDS concentrations. Notably, at SDS concentrations above 2.5 mM, the succinyl-ConA β-sheet transformed into an α-helical structure. The SDS-induced succinyl-ConA amyloid-like aggregates were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We propose that SDS modulates amyloid fibrillation in succinyl-ConA due to electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions and succinylation affects SDS-induced succinyl-ConA aggregation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Bladder cancer is a common malignant tumor of the urinary system, with an incidence ranking the first in the urinary system. Without timely and effective treatment, the tumor may spread to other parts of the body. Traditional partial cystectomy (PC) and plasmakinetic transurethral resection of bladder tumor (PKRBT) are common surgical methods for superficial bladder cancer (SBC). This study aims to clarify the clinical efficacy of bladder carcinoma (BC) patients treated by either PC or PKRBT and their effects on the quality of life (QOL) of patients. METHODS A total of 142 patients with SBC treated in Wenzhou Central Hospital and Bei da huang Industry Group General Hospital from March 2018 to June 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. According to the surgical method, patients undergoing PKRBT were included in the research group (n = 74) while those treated by PC were included in the control group (n = 69). Surgical indicators (intraoperative blood loss, IBL; operating time, OT; bladder irrigation time; catheter retention time; length of hospital stay, LOS), postoperative complication rate, and one-year recurrence rate were compared between the two groups. Besides, the levels of inflammatory factors [tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10], psychological and emotional scores (Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, SAS; Self-Rating Depression Scale, SDS), and living conditions (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI) before and after treatment were compared. RESULTS Compared with the control group, patients in the research group had 1) less IBL, less time of OT, bladder irrigation and indwelling catheter time, as well as shorter postoperative LOS; 2) lower contents of inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8, and higher IL-10; 3) lower SAS and SDS scores and higher PSQI; and 4) fewer postoperative complications and lower one-year recurrence rate. CONCLUSION Compared with PC, PKRBT contributes to higher efficacy and better postoperative QOL in patients SBC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the effect of depression on the recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) 1 year after radio-frequency ablation. METHODS A total of 91 patients with AF admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to July 2021 were studied. All patients were followed up 1 year after radio-frequency ablation. A total of 91 subjects were divided into recurrence group (n = 30) and no recurrence group (n = 61) according to the recurrence situation 1 year after radio-frequency ablation. Age, disease course, body mass index (BMI), gender, echocardiography (left atrial diameter), blood inflammatory indicators (neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, and monocyte count), and Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores were compared between the two groups. Logistic multivariate regression analysis was used to analyze the effect of SDS score and other indexes on the recurrence of AF 1 year after radio-frequency ablation. RESULTS The age of patients in relapse group was higher than that in no relapse group (P < 0.05) and the course of disease was longer than that of the no recurrence group (P < 0.05). The BMI was higher than that of the no recurrence group (P < 0.05) and the left atrial diameter was greater than that of the no recurrence group (P < 0.05). Neutrophil count and monocyte count were significantly higher than those in no recurrence group (P < 0.05) and the lymphocyte count was significantly lower than that in the no recurrence group (P < 0.05). There were significant differences in SDS score composition between the two groups (P < 0.05) and the composition ratio of patients with moderate and major depression in the relapsing group was significantly higher than that in the non-relapsing group. The composition ratio of patients without depression in the relapsing group was significantly lower than that in the non-relapsing group. Multivariate analysis showed that age, disease course, BMI, left atrial diameter, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, monocyte count, and SDS score were all independent factors affecting the recurrence of AF patients 1 year after radio frequency ablation (P < 0.05). Compared with patients without depression, patients with mild, moderate and major depression had an increased risk of recurrence by 74.0, 98.2, and 151.2% 1 year after radio-frequency ablation, respectively (OR = 1.740, 1.982, and 2.512). CONCLUSION There is a high rate of depression in patients with AF. Depression is an important factor affecting the early recurrence of patients with AF after radio-frequency ablation.

Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) can be used for the separation of nanoparticles (NPs). Coupling of CE to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or single particle (sp)-ICP-MS enhances the analytical performance and capabilities of the method compared to CE with a standard detector (ultraviolet visible spectroscopy), in particular for trace analysis of metals or metal-containing compounds. spICP-MS is a method for NP analysis, where a standard ICP-MS setup is used with fast time-resolved detection in order to obtain information on individual NPs. Here we describe a method for the separation and detection of silver and gold NPs using CE-ICP-MS and CE-spICP-MS with reversed electrode polarity stacking mode (REPSM) for online preconcentration. CE-spICP-MS allows obtaining the average size, size distribution, elemental composition, and particle number concentration (PNC) of NPs in addition to a CE separation profile in a single run. Moreover, CE-spICP-MS can be used in some cases to separate NPs with different coatings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the completeness and accuracy of information on the SDS that has been reported to the SIINAS (Indonesian Industrial Information System). METHODS The SDSs of 42 chemical substances were evaluated using a checklist that includes (1) the completeness check which refers to the Indonesian Regulation and (2) the accuracy check which refers to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) - info card and the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) of Japan - Chemical Risk Information Platform (CHRIP). RESULT The evaluation on the completeness check showed that all SDS provides complete information on the hazard identification (SDS element 2), yet none of SDS provides complete toxicological information (SDS element 11). On the other hand, the evaluation on the SDS accuracy found that 21 SDSs were accurate based on ECHA-Infocard and 4 SDSs were accurate based on NITE-CHRIP. CONCLUSION This study shows that there are weaknesses in the completeness and accuracy of SDS available in Indonesia. Strengthening the knowledge on GHS and available resources as reference for SDS production is ought to be improved.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Children with obesity are known to have reduced bone density and are at a higher risk for fractures. This may be caused by decreased physical activity or a metabolic phenomenon. In this study, we evaluated associations of physical activity with bone metabolism in children and adolescents with and without obesity. METHODS Results from 574 visits of 397 subjects, 191 girls and 206 boys aged five to 18 years (mean: 11.7 ± 2.8) representing 180 children with (mean BMI SDS 2.5 ± 0.4) and 217 without obesity (mean BMI SDS 0.2 ± 1.0) from the LIFE Child study, a population-based cohort of children/adolescents with normal weight and with obesity were analyzed for the impact of their daily physical activity (MET/day, SenseWear Accelerometer) on serum SDS levels for bone formation (alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, procollagen type I N propeptide [P1NP]), bone resorption (beta-crosslaps), and calcium homeostasis (parathormone, OH-25-vitamin D) by a linear regression model adjusted for gender- and age-based differences. RESULTS For male subjects, BMI SDS significantly influenced the association of physical activity to PTH, vitamin D, and beta-crosslaps SDS levels. A higher physical activity was accompanied by increased PTH but decreased vitamin D SDS levels in children with normal weight. In males with obesity, all levels remained unaltered. In females, BMI SDS significantly impacted the association of physical activity to PTH, vitamin D, P1NP, beta-crosslaps, and osteocalcin SDS levels. In females with obesity, higher physical activity was related to higher SDS levels of vitamin D, P1NP, and beta-crosslaps. In contrast, in normal weight females, only PTH SDS was higher. CONCLUSIONS The effect of daily physical activity on bone metabolic markers and calciotropic hormones depends significantly on gender and BMI SDS. However, higher levels of physical activity were associated with increased bone turnover for female subjects with obesity only. Thus, motivating especially girls with obesity to be physically active may help improve their bone health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to optimize a decellularization protocol in the trachea of Sus scrofa domestica (pig) as well as to study the effects of long-term cryopreservation on the extracellular matrix of decellularized tracheas. METHODS Porcine tracheas were decellularized using Triton X-100, SDC, and SDS alone or in combination. The effect of these detergents on the extracellular matrix characteristics of decellularized porcine tracheas was evaluated at the histological, biomechanical, and biocompatibility level. Morphometric approaches were used to estimate the effect of detergents on the collagen and elastic fibers content as well as on the removal of chondrocytes from decellularized organs. Moreover, the long-term structural, ultrastructural, and biomechanical effect of cryopreservation of decellularized tracheas were also estimated. RESULTS Two percent SDS was the most effective detergent tested concerning cell removal and preservation of the histological and biomechanical properties of the tracheal wall. However, long-term cryopreservation had no an appreciable effect on the structure, ultrastructure, and biomechanics of decellularized tracheal rings. CONCLUSION The results presented here reinforce the use of SDS as a valuable decellularizing agent for porcine tracheas. Furthermore, a cryogenic preservation protocol is described, which has minimal impact on the histological and biomechanical properties of decellularized porcine tracheas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growth references are traditionally constructed relative to chronological age, despite inter-individual variations in pubertal timing. A new type of height reference was recently developed allowing growth to be aligned based on onset of pubertal height growth. We here aim to develop a corresponding reference for pubertal weight. METHODS To model QEPS-weight, 3595 subjects (1779 girls) from GrowUp1974Gothenburg and GrowUp1990Gothenburg were used. The QEPS-height-model was transformed to a corresponding QEPS-weight-model; thereafter, QEPS-weight was modified by an individual, constitutional weight-height-factor. Longitudinal weight and length/height measurements from 1418 individuals (698 girls) from GrowUp1990Gothenburg were then used to create weight references aligned for height at pubertal onset (the age at 5% of P-function growth, AgeP5). GrowUp1974Gothenburg subgroups based on pubertal timing, stature at pubertal onset, and childhood body composition were assessed using the references. RESULTS References (median, SDS) for total weight (QEPS-functions), weight specific to puberty (P-function), and weight gain in the absence of specific pubertal growth (basic weight, QES-functions), allowing alignment of individual growth based on age at pubertal onset. For both sexes, basic weight was greater than average for late maturing, tall and high-BMI subgroups. The P-function-related weight was greater than average in short and lower than average in tall children, in those with high BMI, and in girls but not boys with low BMI. CONCLUSIONS New pubertal weight references allow individual variations in pubertal timing to be taken into consideration when evaluating growth. When used together with the comparable pubertal height reference, this will improve growth monitoring in clinical practice for identifying abnormal growth and serve as a valuable research tool providing insight into human growth.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS For conventional high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) with an external osmotic pressure greater than Laplace pressure, once the osmotic balance is broken, the swelling or shrinking of the aqueous phase can easily trigger phase separation. Mixing two immiscible dispersed phases in a double HIPE can evolve differently following an osmotic shock, which is expected to create a synergistic effect that can frustrate the phase separation of the system. EXPERIMENTS Osmotic responses of double HIPEs were studied at the surface of a NaCl solution at a range of molarities. Fluorescence confocal microscopy studies were carried out to track the responses on microscopic scales. Measurements on surface tensions revealed the interfacial behaviors of the used surfactant. FINDINGS A synergistic effect is achieved by a symbiotic process between the dispersed oils, where one type of droplets become more stable and pack around the other ones to halt their coalescence. The essential drive comes from the adsorption/desorption of surfactant molecules at oil-water interfaces. By directly adjusting the osmotic pressure difference, transitions between osmotic down-shock and osmotic up-shock can also be realized. This symbiosis greatly expands the potential technological applications of multiple-liquid systems, and can be used to design novel multi-functional composite materials.

Abstract
The general characteristics of the effect of surfactants on the activity of lysozyme were demonstrated. The kinetics of bacterial cell lysis is consistent with the Michaelis-Menten equation and the presence of surfactants does not shift the pH-optimum of activity. Surfactants do not change the Km value but instead, affect the Vmax value. The experimental dependencies are well described by theoretical equations, which assume three surfactant binding sites on the lysozyme molecule. The dependencies of the activity of lysozyme on the surfactant concentration are either a step type (i.e., a higher plateau becomes a lower plateau), or a dependency with a maximum and continuation of the curve in the form of a plateau but with an increase in the surfactant concentration. It can be assumed that there is a mechanism for the regulation of lysozyme activity by an unknown natural factor that has a suitable hydrophobic radical capable of binding to the surface of lysozyme.

Abstract
Background To establish a method to prevent and manage fatigue caused by psychological and physical stress in young females, early detection factors, such as understanding of fatigue and causes of psychological and physical stress, as well as a review of early management of psychiatric disease, are important. With increasing knowledge regarding the diverse causes of stress, it is important to select biomarkers with consideration of the types of stress burden and mechanisms underlying the development of physical symptoms. The methods used to search for stress characteristics is an issue that needs to be addressed. However, consensus regarding objective assessment methods for impaired mental health is lacking. Methods We examined the effects of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), considered to be a uniform source of psychological and physical stress, on biomarkers of oxidative stress and fatigue in 16 third-year female medical university students (21.3 ± 2.1 years old) in Japan with a normal menstrual cycle. A self-administered questionnaire consisting of Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to assess subjective stress. Furthermore, stress-related biomarkers (urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine [u-8-OHdG], urinary 5-hydroxytryptamine [u-5-HT], and salivary human herpesvirus-6 [s-HHV-6]) were examined at 1 month, 1 week, and 1 day before, and 1 week after the OSCE. Results The results indicated that the OSCE did not have effects on u-8-OHdG, a biomarker of oxidative stress. However, u-5-HT and s-HHV-6 were found to be elevated in examinations performed prior to the OSCE. Conclusions The present findings suggest that u-5-HT and s-HHV-6 levels can be used for objective assessment of mental and physical fatigue in young females, including that produced not only by knowledge regarding an upcoming OSCE, but also by skill and attitude aspects related to that examination.
