Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolonged periods of sitting have been linked to negative health outcomes. Implementation of sit-stand desks in the workplace has been one strategy to reduce prolonged sitting. OBJECTIVE To assess the effectiveness of sit-stand workstations on reducing sitting time and improving other health outcomes of office-based workers. METHODS 39 Portuguese office workers were randomized into a 6-month parallel-group cluster RCT consisting by the implementation of sit-stand desks in the workplace. The primary outcome of sitting time was assessed using ActivPAL. Secondary outcomes included biometric, psychological, and diet-related variables. All outcomes were assessed at baseline and 6 months for the whole sample and at 3 months for a sub-sample of the intervention group (n = 11). RESULTS No significant time*group interaction was found for the primary or secondary outcomes, apart from waist circumference favoring the control group (Δ-1.81 cm, pinteraction = 0.04). There were significant changes within the intervention group for sitting time (-44.0 min/day), prolonged sitting (>30 min) (-45.3 min/day) and standing time (51.7 min/day) at 3 months in the sub-sample and in prolonged sitting (>30 min) (-26 min/day) in the full intervention group (p < 0.05). Changes were also observed within the intervention group for percent body fat (Δ-3.7%) and ratings of quality of life (Δ2.2), musculoskeletal discomfort (Δ-4.9), overall fatigue (Δ-2.2), and the need for recovery after work (Δ-1.7) at 6-month follow-up (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Although not being effective for reducing sitting time, the implementation of sit-stand desks in the Portuguese workspace was shown to be feasible over the long term, received well by users, and may offer other health benefits. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the current situation of sitting time and health literacy among high school students in China, in order to provide a basis for improving their physical and mental health levels. METHODS A stratified random cluster sampling method was used to investigate the length of sitting time and health literacy of first and second grade high school students from 31 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions in China(data did not include that of Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Region, and Taiwan Province of China). The Kruskal-Wallis H method, independent sample Mann-Whitney U test, and regression model were used to analyze the influencing factors of sitting time and total health literacy score. RESULTS (1) The total score of health literacy was statistically significant (P < 0.01) in different regions, urban and rural distribution, annual family income, parents' educational background, age, and gender. (2) The length of sitting was statistically significant (P < 0.01) among multiple groups in different regions, family annual income, parental education, and gender. However, there was no statistically significant difference between groups of different ages and urban-rural distribution (P>0.05). (3) The analysis of multiple linear regression model showed that the total score of health literacy was positively correlated with the family' s annual income and the mother' s education, and negatively correlated with the father' s education and the length of sitting. Standardized regression coefficient β comparison: Father' s education (-0.32) > family annual income (0.15) > mother' s education (0.09) > average daily sitting time (-0.02), with father' s education having the greatest impact, followed by family annual income. The length of sitting was positively related to the family' s annual income and the mother' s educational background, and negatively related to the total score of health literacy. Standardized regression coefficient β comparison: Annual family income (0.14) > education background of mother (0.13)> total score of health literacy (-0.02), with the impact of annual family income the largest, followed by education background of mother. CONCLUSION China' s first and second grade high school students generally spend a long time sitting every day, and the level of health literacy is generally low. The level of health literacy and sitting time are negatively correlated with each other, and are most influenced by the educational background of high school students' parents and their family economic levels.

Abstract
Background Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common health problem that affects the quality of life and health of millions of people in the United States (US). We aimed to investigate the association between sitting time and UI symptoms in the US population. Methods A cross-sectional survey of participants aged 20 and above from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2018 was performed. A self-report questionnaire that reported complete data on UI, sitting time and covariates was included. Weighted multivariable logistic and regression models were used to assess the association between sitting time and UI symptoms. Results A total of 22,916 participants were enrolled. Prolonged sitting time was associated with urgency UI (UUI, odds ratio [OR] = 1.2, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.1 to 1.3, p = 0.001). Compared with patients with sitting a time shorter than 7 hours (h), moderate recreational activity modified the association between sitting time and mixed UI in males in the fully adjusted model (OR = 2.5, 95% CI = 1.4 to 4.5, p = 0.002). A sitting time over 7 h was related to mixed UI (MUI, OR = 1.6, 95% CI = 1.1 to 2.2, p = 0.01) in males, and stress UI (SUI, OR = 0.9, 95% CI = 0.8 to 0.98, p = 0.03) in females. However, no significant difference was found among the UI, SUI, and MUI groups in fully adjusted model. Conclusions A prolonged sitting time (≥7 h) was associated with UUI symptoms in all populations, SUI symptoms in females and MUI symptoms in males compared with sitting time lower than 7 h. Compared with those sit shorter than 7 h, moderate recreational activity may be a modifier between prolonged sitting and MUI symptoms in male participants, which warrants further studies for confirmation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolonged sitting and reduced physical activity lead to low energy expenditures. However, little is known about the joint impact of daily sitting time and physical activity on body fat distribution. We investigated the independent and joint associations of daily sitting time and physical activity with body fat among adults. METHODS This was a cross-sectional analysis of U.S. nationally representative data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2018 among adults aged 20 years or older. Daily sitting time and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) were self-reported using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Body fat (total and trunk fat percentage) was determined via dual X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS Among 10,808 adults, about 54.6% spent 6 h/day or more sitting; more than one-half reported no LTPA (inactive) or less than 150 min/week LTPA (insufficiently active) with only 43.3% reported 150 min/week or more LTPA (active) in the past week. After fully adjusting for sociodemographic data, lifestyle behaviors, and chronic conditions, prolonged sitting time and low levels of LTPA were associated with higher total and trunk fat percentages in both sexes. When stratifying by LTPA, the association between daily sitting time and body fat appeared to be stronger in those who were inactive/insufficiently active. In the joint analyses, inactive/insufficiently active adults who reported sitting more than 8 h/day had the highest total (female: 3.99% (95% confidence interval (95%CI): 3.09%-4.88%); male: 3.79% (95%CI: 2.75%-4.82%)) and trunk body fat percentages (female: 4.21% (95%CI: 3.09%-5.32%); male: 4.07% (95%CI: 2.95%-5.19%)) when compared with those who were active and sitting less than 4 h/day. CONCLUSION Prolonged daily sitting time was associated with increased body fat among U.S. adults. The higher body fat associated with 6 h/day sitting may not be offset by achieving recommended levels of physical activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe self-reported sitting time (ST), and determine the factors associated with health status (HS) among patients with heart failure (HF). METHODS A cross-sectional study design was used in this study. Outcome measures included an international physical activity questionnaire and a self-report health status questionnaire. The data assessments were examined using the Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Hierarchical multiple regression. RESULT 180 respondents joined this study. The mean age was mean 59.92 (SD= 11.90) years old, and 60% were male. The mean score of HS was mean 9.43 (SD= 2.16). The HS had a significant correlation with age (r= .17, p< .05), Hemoglobin (r= -.46, p< .01), HF medications (r= .31, p< .01), length of diagnostic HF (r= .35, p< .01), and comorbidity (r= .25, p< .01), and the HS was associated with the NYHA Classification (F= 203.43, p< .001), and the ST (F= 73.97, p< .001). Four variables were significant predictors of HS such as comorbidity (β = .14), NYHA Class I (β= -2.22), ST 6 to 8 hours/day (β= 1.27), and ST > 8 hours/day (β= 3.03), and they were predicted 75.1% of the variance in HS. CONCLUSION High amounts of ST and high NYHA classifications were associated with decreased HS in patients with HF, Moreover, HS is independently associated with comorbidities status and length of diagnostic HF.

Abstract
Sedentary behavior has recently emerged as a risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases. The objective of this review was to assess the relationship between sedentary behavior and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we performed an electronic search across databases including Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, MEDLINE (Ovid), CINHAL and PubMed to identify studies focusing on sedentary behavior and PAD. A total of 678 records fulfilled eligibility; 166 duplicates were removed, 487 were excluded at the title and abstract level and 15 studies were excluded at the full article level. Thus, our review comprised 10 studies of 20,064 patients with mean age 67.4 years. The average sedentary time was 544.9 min/day. The current review findings indicate that patients with PAD exhibited prolonged periods of sedentary behavior. Furthermore, sedentary behavior among patients with PAD was associated with lower survival rates. The included studies also reported varied outcomes regarding walking distance with some showing an association between reduced sedentary behavior and increased total walking distance. A randomized controlled trial in this review highlighted that reducing sedentary time among patients with PAD improved walking distance. Therefore, the connection between sedentary behavior and PAD seems to be bidirectional. Sedentary time could contribute to PAD development, and PAD-related symptoms may lead to prolonged sedentary behavior. A call for research investigating the link between PAD and sedentary time. Additionally, intervention studies are needed to target the reduction of sedentary time in patients with PAD.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the long-term effect of sitting time and physical activity after a skin cancer diagnosis. METHODS A cohort of a nationally representative sample of skin cancer survivors (n=862) and non-cancer adults (n=13691) ≥50 years from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Mortality data were linked through December 31, 2019. RESULTS During up to 13.2 years of follow-up (median, 6.3 years; 94,093 person-years), 207 deaths (cancer: 53) occurred in skin cancer survivors and 1970 (cancer: 414) in non-cancer adults. After adjusting for covariates and skin cancer type, being active was associated with lower risks of all-cause (HR=0.69; 95% CI: 0.47 to 1.00) and non-cancer (HR=0.59; 95% CI: 0.36 to 0.97) mortality compared to being inactive among skin cancer survivors. Meanwhile, sitting 8 h/d was associated with higher risks of all-cause (HR=1.72; 95% CI: 1.11 to 2.67) and non-cancer (HR=1.76; 95% CI: 1.07 to 2.92) mortality compared to sitting <6 h/d. In the joint analysis, inactive skin cancer survivors sitting >8 h/d had the highest mortality risks from all-cause (HR=2.26; 95% CI: 1.28 to 4.00) and non-cancer (HR=2.11; 95% CI,1.10 to 4.17). Additionally, the associations of LTPA and sitting time with all-cause and cause-specific mortality did not differ between skin cancer survivors and non-cancer adults (all P for interaction>0.05) CONCLUSION: The combination of prolonged sitting and lack of physical activity was associated with elevated risks of all-cause and non-cancer deaths among US skin cancer survivors. Skin cancer survivors could benefit from maintaining a physically active lifestyle.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the association of social isolation with physical activity and leisure-time sedentary behavior among adolescents. METHODS We used data from the Global School-based Health Survey, including a representative sample of 296,861 adolescents (11-18y) from 79 countries (48.9% girls, 14.5 ± 1.6 years). Social isolation was estimated by combining the self-reported number of friends and loneliness perception. Physical activity and leisure-time sedentary behavior were assessed through questionnaires. Multinomial logistic regression models were created to analyze the associations of social isolation with physical activity and leisure-time sedentary behavior. RESULTS Compared with those practicing ≥60 min of physical activity during 1-4 days/week, social isolation was associated with a higher prevalence of not practicing physical activity (Prevalence ratio [PR]:1.24; 95%CI:1.19-1.29), and a lower prevalence of practicing during ≥5d/wk. (PR:0.91; 95%CI:0.88-0.94). Compared with <4 h/d of leisure-time sedentary behavior, being socially isolated was also associated with a higher prevalence of 4-7 h/d (PR: 1.08; 95%CI:1.03-1.14) and ≥ 8 h/d (PR: 1.24; 95%CI:1.16-1.33) of leisure-time sedentary behavior. Compared with those participants without elevated leisure-time sedentary behavior and with those practicing adequate physical activity, social isolation was independently associated with a higher prevalence of physical inactivity (PR: 1.20; 95%CI: 1.15-1.26) and elevated leisure-time sedentary behavior (PR: 1.21; 95%CI: 1.14-1.30), as well as with both risk factors simultaneously (PR: 1.36; 95%CI: 1.28-1.45). CONCLUSION Reducing social isolation could be an important component of future interventions to reduce sedentary behavior and physical inactivity among adolescents.

Abstract
AIMS To examine temporal trends in physical activity and sedentary time among U.S. adults with diabetes from 2007 to 2020. METHODS We performed serial cross-sectional analyses for participants aged ≥ 20 years with diagnosed diabetes from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2020. Participants completed the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. RESULTS The analytic sample comprised 5096 adults with diabetes (mean age: 60.3 years; 48.2% females; 60.1% White people; mean body mass index: 33.0 kg/m2). From 2007-2008 through 2017-March 2020, the proportion of being physically sufficiently active increased from 41.5% (95% CI, 35.9%-47.2%) to 55.8% (95% CI, 51.3%-60.3%) (P-trend<0.001), whereas that of physical inactivity declined from 43.7% (95% CI, 38.1%-49.2%) to 31.0% (95% CI, 27.7%-34.3%) (P-trend<0.001). The decline was driven by increasing engagement in work-related and leisure-time activity. However, engagement in transportation-related activity stayed persistently low (16.7% [95% CI, 14.8%-18.8%] in 2017-March 2020) (P-trend = 0.25), and the mean daily sitting hours remained unaltered (6.2 [95% CI, 5.9-6.5] in 2017-March 2020) (P-trend = 0.60). Adults who were middle-aged or older, or with class III obesity, cardiovascular or chronic kidney concomitants were less likely to be sufficiently active and prone to prolonged sitting. CONCLUSIONS Physical activity levels in U.S. adults with diabetes have increased from 2007 to 2020, but about one in two remains inactive or insufficiently active. Sedentary time has not decreased. For diabetes management, nationwide efforts are needed to promote transportation-related physical activity while minimizing prolonged sitting, especially among those who are middle-aged or older, or with severe obesity or other complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence on all-cause mortality attributable to joint sitting time and physical inactivity is lacking. In this study, we estimated the proportion and number of deaths attributable to sitting time and physical inactivity in Chilean adults. METHODS A sample of 5834 adults aged 20-96 years from a 2016-2017 Chilean National Health Survey was included to describe the prevalence of 16 joint categories of sitting time and physical activity. Relative risks for the joint association of sitting time and physical inactivity were obtained from a meta-analysis of individual participant data. We retrieved the number of deaths in adults ≥ 20 years in 2019 from the Chilean Ministry of Health. RESULTS Participants with high sitting time (> 8 h/day) and low physical activity (< 2.5 MET-hour/week) were more likely to be women, 20-64 years, non-indigenous ethnicity, lived in the urban areas, had middle education level and monthly household income, and had public health insurance. Reducing sitting time and increasing physical activity to a theoretical minimum risk exposure level could prevent up to 11,470 deaths or 10.4% of all deaths. Increasing physical activity to >35.5 MET-hour/week and maintaining sitting time could prevent approximately 10,477 deaths or 9.5% of all deaths. Reducing sitting time to < 4 h/day and maintaining physical activity would not reduce the number of deaths (-3.4% or 38 deaths). CONCLUSION Reducing sitting time may be ancillary for preventing mortality. Therefore, increasing physical activity should be the primary focus of interventions and policies in Chile.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sedentary behavior (SB) has been linked to several negative health outcomes. Therefore, reducing SB or breaking up prolonged periods of SB improves functional fitness, food consumption, job satisfaction, and productivity. Reducing SB can be achieved by introducing a health-enhancing contextual modification promoted by a sit-stand desk in the workplace. The primary goal will be to test the effectiveness of this intervention in reducing and breaking up SB, while improving health outcomes in office-based workers during a 6-month intervention. METHODS A two-arm (1:1), superiority parallel-group cluster RCT will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention in a sample of office-based workers from a university in Portugal. The intervention will consist of a psychoeducation session, motivational prompts, and contextual modification promoted by a sit-stand desk in the workplace for 6 months. The control group will work as usual in their workplace, with no contextual change or prompts during the 6-month intervention. Three assessment points will be conducted in both groups, pre-intervention (baseline), post-intervention, and a 3-month follow-up. The primary outcomes include sedentary and physical activity-related variables, which will be objectively assessed with 24 h monitoring using the ActivPAL for 7 days. The secondary outcomes include (a) biometric indices as body composition, body mass index, waist circumference, and postural inequalities; and (b) psychosocial variables such as overall and work-related fatigue, overall discomfort, life/work satisfaction, quality of life, and eating behavior. Both the primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed at each assessment point. DISCUSSION This study will lean on the use of a sit-stand workstation for 6 months, prompted by an initial psychoeducational session and ongoing motivational prompts. We will aim to contribute to this topic by providing robust data on alternating sitting and standing postures in the workplace. Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent work has shown that individuals with chronic health conditions and disabilities (CCD) meet the 24-h movement guidelines at lower rates than population norms; however, the evidence base remains limited across different stages of the lifespan and very few studies have examined associations with mental health outcomes. OBJECTIVE This study examined 24-h movement guideline adherence among emerging adults with CCD compared to those without and associations between guideline adherence and indicators of mental health. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from the 2020 cycle of the Canadian Campus Wellbeing Survey. A total of 17,874 emerging adults enrolled at 20 post-secondary institutions (mean age = 21.6 ± 2.94 years; 65.2% female), including 3336 who identified with a CCD, self-reported their movement behaviors (physical activity, sedentary behaviors, sleep) and completed measures of psychological distress and mental well-being. Logistic regressions models were computed to examine differences in guideline adherence. Propensity score weighted linear regression models were computed to examine associations between guideline adherence and indicators of mental health. RESULTS Emerging adults with CCD had significantly lower odds of meeting the 24-h movement guidelines than their peers, and disparities in guideline adherence were most pronounced among those with multimorbidity, developmental, and physical disabilities. Guideline adherence was associated with significantly more favorable scores for psychological distress and mental well-being among those with and without CCD. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest emerging adults with CCD engage in less healthy movement behavior patterns than their peers, yet they appear to experience similar mental health benefits when they do meet the 24-h movement guidelines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate health care and health-related productivity costs associated with excessive sedentary behaviour (> 8 h/day and > 9 h/day) in Canadian adults. METHODS Three pieces of information were used to estimate costs: (1) the pooled relative risk estimates of adverse health outcomes consistently shown to be associated with excessive sedentary behaviour, gathered from meta-analyses of prospective cohort studies; (2) the prevalence of excessive sedentary behaviour in Canadian men and women, obtained using waist-worn accelerometry in a nationally representative sample of adults (Canadian Health Measures Survey 2018-2019); and (3) the direct (health care) and indirect (lost productivity due to premature mortality) costs of the adverse health outcomes, selected using the Economic Burden of Illness in Canada 2010 data. The 2010 costs were then adjusted to 2021 costs to account for inflation, population growth, and higher average earnings. A Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to account for uncertainty in the model. RESULTS The total costs of excessive sedentary behaviour in Canada were $2.2 billion (8 h/day cut-point) and $1.8 billion (9 h/day cut-point) in 2021, representing 1.6% and 1.3% of the overall burden of illness costs, respectively. The two most expensive chronic diseases attributable to excessive sedentary behaviour were cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. A 10% decrease in excessive sedentary behaviour (from 87.7% to 77.7%) would save an estimated $219 million per year in costs. CONCLUSION Excessive sedentary behaviour significantly contributes to the economic burden of illness in Canada. There is a need for evidence-based and cost-effective strategies that reduce excessive sedentary behaviour in the population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excess weight is increasing worldwide, and in Latin America more than half of the population is excess weight. One of the reasons for this increase has been excessive sitting time. Still, it remains to be seen whether there is an excessive amount of that time in Latin American adults. This study aimed to associate different sitting time cut-off points with the excess weight. METHODS Data from the Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health (ELANS), a cross-sectional population-based survey conducted in eight Latin American countries, were used. The excess weight indicators used were body mass index, and waist and neck circumferences. Sitting time was obtained using questionnaires and categorized at different cut-off points. Differences between sitting time categories (< 4 or ≥ 4; < 6 or ≥ 6; and < 8 or ≥ 8 hours/day) and excess weight were obtained by Student's t test for independent samples and the association between sitting time categories and different indicators of excess weight were obtained by logistic regression. RESULTS The median of the sitting time was 420 min/day (IQR: 240-600). There were no significant differences between body mass index (kg/m2) and waist circumference (cm) with categories of sitting time. The mean values of neck circumference (cm) were significantly higher in ≥4, ≥6 and ≥ 8 hours/day than < 4, < 6, and < 8 hours/day of sitting time in the pooled sample. Some distinct differences by country were observed. There were significant differences among excess weight by body mass index (63.2% versus 60.8) with < 8 vs ≥8 hours/day of sitting time. The proportion of excess weight by neck circumference was higher in participants who reported ≥4, ≥6, and ≥ 8 hours/day compared to < 4, < 6, and < 8 hours/day of sitting time. Considering ≥8 hours/day of sitting time, higher odds of excess weight were found evaluated by body mass index (OR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.20) and neck circumference (OR: 1.13; CI 95%: 1.03, 1.24) overall. CONCLUSIONS Sitting time above 8 hours/day was associated with higher odds of excess weight, even though there were no differences in waist circumference between sitting time categories. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Insufficient physical activity (PA) and prolonged sitting time (ST) increase the risk of chronic disease and mortality. Caring for young children can potentially impact maternal PA and sedentary behaviours. The aims of this study were to explore the levels of PA and ST in women with young children (infants, toddlers and preschoolers) and sociodemographic and behavioural factors associated with these. STUDY DESIGN This was a population-based cross-sectional study. METHODS Survey 5 data collected in 2009 (n = 4290) of the 1973-1978 birth cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health were used. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to examine associations. RESULTS In adjusted models, compared with women with preschoolers, women whose youngest child was an infant aged 0-6 months, aged >6-12 months or toddler had lower PA (-321.3 MET.min/week [95% confidence interval (CI) -416.2, -226.4], -147.9 MET.min/week [95% CI -237.6, -58.1] and -106.4 MET.min/week [95% CI -172.3, -40.5]). ST was higher in women whose youngest child was an infant aged 0-6 months (0.48 h/day; 95% CI 0.19, 0.77) but lower with infants aged >6-12 months (-0.33 h/day; 95% CI -0.60, -0.05) and toddlers (-0.40 h/day; 95% CI -0.60, -0.20) than in those with preschoolers. The findings were similar in the logistic model. Sociodemographic and behavioural factors such as occupation and marital status also influenced PA and ST. CONCLUSIONS Women with infants and toddlers have lower PA than women with preschoolers. Women are more likely to sit more in the first 6 months after childbirth. These findings can inform resources and intervention development to improve activity levels in women with young children through consideration of the age of the youngest child, sociodemographic and behavioural factors.

Abstract
Background Sedentary behavior is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases, such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes and all-cause mortality. Occupational sitting time contributes to large amounts of daily sedentary behavior, especially in office workers. Objective This study investigated the amount of time spent in sedentary behavior during different tasks at work and while commuting of administrative personnel of a university hospital in Germany. Material and methods A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study of administrative employees at the University Hospital Regensburg, Germany was carried out to assess work-related sedentary behavior. Descriptive and exploratory statistical analyses were performed. Results The study population consisted of 159 participants (54.1% women, 51.6% older than 40 years), which corresponds to a response rate of 26%. The median daily sitting time in the office was 7.0 h (interquartile range, IQR 6.0-7.5 h) and mostly occurred during computer work (57.3%), telephone calls (13.2%) and meetings (11.7%). Median standing time at work was 0.8 h (IQR 0.3-1.4 h). Administrative staff spent a median of 0.7 h (IQR 0.3-1.0 h) per day sedentary while commuting, with 67.3% of respondents commuting by car, motorbike or scooter. The participants were of the opinion that sitting for long uninterrupted periods had negative (69.6%) or relatively negative (29.7%) effects on health. Conclusion Administrative staff in hospitals spend large amounts of the daily working time with sedentary behavior. Interventions that enable working both in sitting and standing positions can lead to reduced work-related sitting time and thereby could improve occupational and, in a broader sense, public health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While the relationship between sedentary time and adiposity markers may be independent of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) among adolescents, little is known about the role of light-intensity physical activity (LIPA) in this relationship. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine whether device-measured LIPA and MVPA moderate the associations between objectively measured sitting time and adiposity markers (body mass index (BMI)) and waist circumference (WC)) among adolescents. METHODS This study included accelerometer and inclinometer data obtained from 219 adolescents (age = 14.9 ± 1.6 years, mean ± SD), collected during 2014 and 2015 in Melbourne, Australia. ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers were used to determine time spent in total-LIPA (101 counts/min to 3.99 metabolic equivalents (METs)) was dichotomized into low-LIPA (101-799 counts/min) and high LIPA (800 counts/min to 3.99 METs), and MVPA (≥ 4 METs). The average time spent sitting was obtained from activPAL inclinometers. Anthropometric measures were assessed by trained staff. Interactions between sitting and total-LIPA, low-LIPA, high-LIPA, and MVPA on BMI z-score (zBMI) and WC z-score (zWC), respectively, were examined using linear regression, adjusting for age and sex; and moderation by total-LIPA, low-LIPA, high-LIPA, and MVPA were examined by adding interaction terms. Significant interaction effects were probed by comparing associations at the mean and at 1 SD below and above the mean. RESULTS Total-LIPA significantly moderated the association between sitting time and zBMI, and low-LIPA significantly moderated the association between sitting time and zBMI and zWC. No other associations were found for total-LIPA, high-LIPA, or MVPA. Specifically, at high levels of total-LIPA (+1 SD), there is a negative association between sitting time and zBMI. In addition, at high levels of low-LIPA (+1 SD), there is a negative association between sitting time and zBMI and zWC. CONCLUSION Associations between sitting and adiposity depended on time spent in total-LIPA and low-LIPA, but not high-LIPA or MVPA. Results suggest that increasing time spent in LIPA may provide protection from the deleterious effects of sitting on adiposity markers among adolescents. Experimental evidence is needed to support these conclusions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While physical inactivity or prolonged sitting has been linked to an increased risk of frailty, the interaction between sitting time (ST), physical activity (PA) and frailty is not well understood. The aim of this study was to examine the dose-response relationship between PA, ST and frailty and further to evaluate the interaction effect of PA and ST on frailty in the context of regular COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control in China. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was performed on 1458 participants (age ≥ 60) enrolled from a prospective cohort study of frailty in elderly people of Fujian Province. PA and ST levels were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. A 40-item frailty index (FI) quantified frailty. Multivariable logistic regression and linear regression models were applied to examine the dose-response relationship between PA or ST and frailty level. Interaction plots were used to visualise the interaction effects of PA and ST on frailty. RESULTS Compared with light PA, the odds ratios (ORs) for frailty were significantly lower for moderate PA (OR, 0.609 [95% CI, 0.419, 0.885], P < .001) and vigorous PA (OR, 0.399 [95% CI, 0.236,0.673], P < .001). Comparing subjects with ST < 4 h/day, those with ST ≥ 8 h/day were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with frailty (OR, 3.140 [95% CI, 1.932, 5.106], P < .001), 6-8 h/day (OR, 1.289 [95% CI, 0.835, 1.989], P >0.05), and 4-6 h/day (OR, 1.400 [95% CI, 0.972, 2.018], P >0.05). Each one unit increase in metabolic equivalents (h/day) of PA was related to an average 0.928 (0.887, 0.971) decrease in prevalence of frailty, while each one unit increase in sitting time (h/day) was related to average 1.114 (1.046,1.185) increase in prevalence of frailty. Negative interactive effects of PA and ST on frailty were observed (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION There are nonlinear and linear dose-response relationships between PA, SB and frailty respectively. In addition, excess ST may counteract the beneficial effects of PA on frailty. Interventions that focus on reducing excess ST may be effective strategies to reduce the risk of frailty and should be taken seriously by public health authorities, especially in the context of regular epidemic prevention and control in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insight into the variability of older adults' sedentary time is needed to inform future interventions. The aim of this study was to examine the intra- and interpersonal variability in sedentary time, and the moderating role of socio-demographics, physical functioning and geographical location in this variability. METHODS Cross-sectional data from 818 community-dwelling older adults (mean age: 74.8 years; 61.1%women) of the Active Lifestyle and the Environment in Chinese Seniors and Belgian Environmental Physical Activity Study in Seniors were used. An interview questionnaire was administered to collect socio-demographic information. The Short Physical Performance Battery was performed to evaluate physical functioning, and Actigraph GT3X( +) accelerometers were used to estimate sedentary time. Linear mixed models with random intercepts at the neighborhood, person and day levels examined the variability in sedentary time, and the moderating role of socio-demographics, physical functioning and geographical location within this variability. RESULTS Most of the variance in accelerometry-assessed sedentary time was due to intrapersonal variability across periods of the day (72.4%) followed by interpersonal variability within neighborhoods (25.6%). Those who were older, men, lived in Hong Kong, and experienced a lower level of physical functioning were more sedentary than their counterparts. Sedentary time increased throughout the day, with highest levels of sedentary time observed between 6:00 and 9:00 pm. The patterns of sedentary time across times of the day differed by gender, educational attainment, age, physical functioning and/or geographical location. No significant differences were detected between week and weekend day sedentary time. CONCLUSIONS The oldest old, men, and those with functional limitations are important target groups for sedentary behavior interventions. As sedentary time was the highest in the evening future sedentary behavior intervention should pay particular attention to the evening hours. The variations in diurnal patterns of sedentary time between population subgroups suggest that personalized just-in-time adaptive interventions might be a promising strategy to reduce older adults' sedentary time.

Abstract
Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has adversely affected social contact and physical activity. This study investigated the correlation between physical activity, social contact, and sedentary time among adults aged 65 years and above during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This study was conducted in N City, H Prefecture, Japan. The authors randomly selected 4,996 adults, aged 65 years and above (mean age 74.1 ± 6.1 years), living in N City, and survey forms were distributed by mail in mid-August 2020. Altogether, 1,925 participants were included in this study. The survey comprised questions concerning the participants’ sex, height, weight, age, smoking and drinking habits, living arrangements, social contact assessments, physical activity levels, and sedentary time. Moreover, linear regression analysis was utilized to investigate the associations between the variables. Results The reported median physical activity was 1272 metabolic equivalent of task-min/week (interquartile range 528–2628), and the reported median sedentary time was 360 min/week (interquartile range 240–600). COVID-19 “somewhat,” “quite a lot,” or “completely” hindered the frequency of in-person contact with friends among 75.5% of the respondents and hampered the frequency of virtual contact with friends among 38.8% of the respondents. Physical activity was associated significantly with in-person contact indicators: “interaction with friends” (B = -0.111; 95%CI: -0.187, -0.035; p = 0.004) and “social participation” (B = -0.163; 95%CI: -0.248, -0.079; p < 0.001). These associations remained significant for both multivariate analysis Models 1 (sex and age) and 2 (addition of body mass index [BMI], alcohol use, smoking, living alone, and the number of illnesses to Model 1). Additionally, sedentary time was significantly associated with the social contact variable of “interaction with friends” (B = 0.04; 95%CI: 0.016, 0.064; p = 0.001). This association remained significant in both multivariate analysis models. Conclusions Significant associations were confirmed between reduced social contact, decreased physical activity, and more sedentary behavior among older adults due to COVID-19. Hence, continuous monitoring and support for social activities among susceptible older adults in extraordinary circumstances are essential.

Abstract
Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have summarized the association between sedentary behavior (SB) and cancer. However, the level of evidence and the potential for risk of bias remains unclear. This umbrella review summarized the current data on SB in relation to cancer incidence and mortality, with a particular emphasis on assessing the risk of bias. We searched PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Database for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the association between SB and cancer incidence and mortality. We also searched for recent observational studies not yet included in existing meta-analyses. We re-calculated summary risk estimates for cancer incidence and mortality using random effects models. We included 14 meta-analyses covering 17 different cancer sites from 77 original studies. We found that high SB levels increase the risk for developing ovarian, endometrial, colon, breast, prostate, and rectal cancers, with relative risks of 1.29 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.08-1.56), 1.29 (95% CI = 1.16-1.45), 1.25 (95% CI = 1.16-1.33), 1.08 (95% CI = 1.04-1.11), 1.08 (95% CI = 1.00-1.17), and 1.07 (95% CI = 1.01-1.12), respectively. Also, we found an increased risk of cancer mortality of 1.18 (95% CI = 1.09-1.26). Most associations between SB and specific cancer sites were supported by a "suggestive" level of evidence. High levels of SB are associated with increased risk of several types of cancer and increased cancer mortality risk.

Abstract
Background Sedentary behavior is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. To reduce occupational sitting time of office workers, the multi-component intervention ‘Dynamic Work’ was implemented in a Dutch insurance company. Although the results showed no significant reductions in sitting time, associations were found between higher levels of implementation and reductions in sitting time. Building upon these findings, this qualitative study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators from an organizational perspective for the implementation of Dynamic Work. In addition, we explored differences in barriers and facilitators between departments with a low, middle and high level of implementation. Methods In total, eighteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with two Dynamic Work coordinators, three occupational physiotherapists who delivered the intervention, and thirteen department managers. All participants were purposively sampled. The data was coded in Atlas.ti and a thematic analysis was performed guided by The Integrated Checklist of Determinants (TICD). Results Implementation factors were related to the organization; working culture and financial support facilitated implementation. Factors related to the implementing department mainly hindered implementation, i.e. lack of information at start of the project, late delivery of Dynamic Work equipment, large group sizes, employee’s workload and work tasks, and an ongoing reorganization. The facilitating role of managers was experienced as both enabling and hindering. The pre-existing familiarity of the occupational physiotherapists with the departments and alignment amongst the three implementers facilitated implementation. Yet, the non-obligatory nature of the intervention as well as limited availability and technical problems of equipment did not support implementation. Conclusions Various barriers and facilitators influenced the implementation of the Dynamic Work intervention, where the key role of the department manager, late delivery of dynamic work equipment and groups sizes varied between low and high implementing departments. These results can contribute to developing and improving implementation strategies in order to increase the effectiveness of future occupational health interventions. Trial registration The study protocol was registered on April 14, 2017 in the ClinicalTrials.gov Protocol Registration and Results System under registration number NCT03115645. Abstract
In the context of rapid urbanization, public open spaces in dense urban areas are critical built environment elements to support active lifestyles. Several reviews have explored the associations of public open space attributes with physically active and sedentary behavior. However, few reviews have included studies from Asia, and no studies have focused on dense urban areas. This systematic review analyzed 18 observational studies investigating associations between public open space attributes with physical activity and sedentary behavior in dense urban areas of East Asian countries, including Japan, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong. We found that closer distance to and a greater number of public open spaces and features within them were positively associated with leisure-time physical activity. Places near water features and corridors within public open spaces were associated with more sedentary behavior. These findings inform landscape and urban design guidelines for (re)designing public open spaces to support active lifestyles in high dense urban areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Posture has been recently integrated into activity guidelines, advising people to limit their sedentary time and break up sedentary postures with standing/stepping as much as possible. The thigh-worn activPAL is a frequently used objective measure of posture, but its validity has only been investigated by individual studies and has not been systematically reviewed. RESEARCH QUESTION Can the activPAL accurately characterize different postures? METHODS A rigorous systematic review protocol was conducted, including multiple study screeners and determiners of study quality. To be included, validation studies had to examine the accuracy of an activPAL posture outcome relative to a criterion measure (e.g., direct observation) in adults (>18 years). Citations were not restricted to language or date of publication. Sources were searched on May 16, 2021 and included Scopus, EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Academic Search Premier. The study was pre-registered in Prospero (ID# CRD42021248240). Study quality was determined using a modified Hagströmer Bowles checklist. The results are presented narratively. RESULTS Twenty-four studies (18 semi-structured laboratory arms, 8 uncontrolled protocol arms; 476 participants) met the inclusion criteria. Some studies (5/24) incorporated dual-monitor (trunk: 4/5; shin: 1/5) configurations. While heterogenous statistical procedures were implemented, most studies (n = 22/24) demonstrated a high validity (e.g., percent agreement >90%, no fixed bias, etc.) of the activPAL to measure sedentary and/or upright postures across semi-structured (17/18 arms) and uncontrolled study designs (7/8 arms). Specific experimental protocol factors (i.e., seat height, fidgeting, non-direct observation criterion comparator) likely explain the divergent reports that observed valid versus invalid findings. The study quality was 11.3 (standard deviation: 2.3) out of 19. CONCLUSION Despite heterogeneous methodological and statistical approaches, the included studies generally provide supporting evidence that the activPAL can accurately distinguish between sedentary and standing postures. Multiple activPAL monitor configurations (e.g., thigh and torso) are needed to better characterize sitting versus lying postures.

Abstract
QUESTIONS What are the daily temporal patterns of movement behaviours (sedentary time, light-intensity physical activity, and moderate-vigorous physical activity) in people with stroke? Do daily temporal patterns of sedentary time differ (a) between subgroups of people with different movement behaviour classifications and (b) over time during the first year after stroke? DESIGN This study represents secondary exploratory analyses from an observational, longitudinal cohort study (n = 197). PARTICIPANTS This study included people with first-ever stroke recruited from 4 hospitals in the Netherlands. OUTCOME MEASURES Movement behaviour was objectively measured using the Activ8 activity monitor within 3 weeks after hospital discharge and again at 6 and 12 months later. RESULTS Participants spent the least time sedentary in the morning with proportionally more sedentary time as the day progressed with maximal sedentary time seen in the evening hours. This pattern did not substantially change over time. Sedentary prolongers spent significantly more absolute time sedentary for each hour of the day, but the daily temporal pattern of sedentary time did not differ between this group and either "sedentary movers" or "sedentary exercisers." CONCLUSION People living at home after stroke are highly sedentary, particularly in the afternoons and evenings, and this pattern does not change during the first year after stroke. Clinicians should encourage people with stroke to find meaningful tasks to do during the day to reduce their sitting time. Researchers developing interventions to encourage people to sit less should include particular focus on the afternoon and evening time periods.

Abstract
Background and Objectives This study aimed to examine the associations between time spent in 6 different domains of sedentary behavior and happiness and whether social capital mediated such associations among adults and older adults living in a rural area of Japan. Research Design and Methods Cross-sectional data from 3,357 participants (mean age: 60 ± 16 years) were used. 6 domains of sedentary behavior, happiness, and social capital were assessed using a self-report questionnaire. Age-stratified multivariable linear regression models adjusted for covariates were used to examine the associations between 6 domains of sedentary behavior and happiness. For relationships where the direct effect was significant, we tested the mediating effects of 2 social capital measures. Results Among both adults and older adults, more time spent viewing television was significantly associated with lower happiness scores, and more time spent engaging in other leisure activities was significantly associated with higher happiness scores. In addition, more time spent using cell phones and computers was significantly associated with lower happiness scores among the adults. Engaging in activities with neighbors significantly mediated the relationship between other leisure activities and happiness in the adults and older adults, and between television viewing and happiness in the older adults. Discussion and Implications Our findings indicated that less television viewing and more mentally active sedentary behavior (e.g., talking with others and engaging in hobbies) were associated with greater happiness. One aspect of social capital, engaging in activities with neighbors, acts as a potential mediator for relationships between sedentary behavior and happiness.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the relationship between physical findings, wheelchair sitting time, and interface pressure on ischial region in subjects with spinal cord injury (SCI).Design: Cross-sectional study.Setting: Rehabilitation center in Japan.Participants: Manual wheelchair users with chronic SCI (n = 45).Interventions: Pressure ulcers (PU) were diagnosed by inspection, palpation, and ultrasonography. Self-reports were obtained on wheelchair sitting time and pressure mapping was recorded while the subject was seated on the wheelchair.Outcome measures: Subjects were divided into those with ultrasonographically low-echoic lesions (PU-positive group, n = 11) and no such lesions (PU-negative group, n = 34). Outcome measures included wheelchair sitting time and interface pressure at bilateral ischial regions.Results: Using ultrasonography, 13 low-echoic lesions were identified in 11 subjects of the PU-positive group. The pressure duration was longer and interface pressure was significantly higher in subjects of the PU-positive group compared with those of the PU-negative group (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively).Conclusions: This is the first study to evaluate the interrelationship between physical findings, sitting time, and ultrasonographically measured interface pressure on ischial region area in subjects with spinal cord injury. To prevent pressure ulcers, we recommend avoidance of prolonged wheelchair sitting and measures that can reduce the interface pressure. These variables should be carefully tailored to the needs of the individual subjects with SCI.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether long-term television viewing patterns, a common sedentary behavior, in early to mid-adulthood is associated with gray matter brain volume in midlife and if this is independent of physical activity. We evaluated 599 participants (51% female, 44% black, mean age 30.3 ± 3.5 at baseline and 50.2 ± 3.5 years at follow-up and MRI) from the prospective Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. We assessed television patterns with repeated interviewer-administered questionnaire spanning 20 years. Structural MRI (3T) measures of frontal cortex, entorhinal cortex, hippocampal, and total gray matter volumes were assessed at midlife. Over the 20 years, participants reported viewing an average of 2.5 ± 1.7 h of television per day (range: 0-10 h). After multivariable adjustment, greater television viewing was negatively associated with gray matter volume in the frontal (β = - 0.77; p = 0.01) and entorhinal cortex (β = - 23.83; p = 0.05) as well as total gray matter (β = - 2.09; p = 0.003) but not hippocampus. These results remained unchanged after additional adjustment for physical activity. For each one standard deviation increase in television viewing, the difference in gray matter volume z-score was approximately 0.06 less for each of the three regions (p < 0.05). Among middle-aged adults, greater television viewing in early to mid-adulthood was associated with lower gray matter volume. Sedentariness or other facets of television viewing may be important for brain aging even in middle age.

Abstract
Evidence of associations between neighbourhood built characteristics and sedentary behaviours is mixed. The study aim was to investigate the associations between objectively-derived neighbourhood built characteristics and self-reported sedentary behaviours among Canadian men and women. This study sourced survey data from Alberta's Tomorrow Project (2008; n = 14,785), in which sitting and motor vehicle travel times during the last 7 days was measured. Geographic Information System was used to calculate neighbourhood built characteristics within a 400 m buffer of participant's home and a walkability score was estimated. To estimate the associations between neighbourhood characteristics and sedentary behaviours, covariate-adjusted generalized linear regression models were used. Walkability, 3-way intersections, and population count were positively associated with sitting time. Business destinations and greenness were negatively associated with sitting time. Walkability, 3-way, and 4-way intersections were negatively associated with motor vehicle travel time. Sex-specific associations between neighbourhood characteristics and sedentary behaviour were found. Among men, business destinations were negatively associated with sitting time, and 3-way intersections, population count, and walkability were negatively associated with motor vehicle travel time. Among women, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index was negatively associated with sitting time. Interventions to reduce sedentary behaviours may need to target neighbourhoods that have built characteristics which might support these behaviours. More research is needed to disentangle the complex relationships between different neighbourhood built characteristics and specific types of sedentary behaviour.

Abstract
Purpose COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives of people of all nations. This study examined physical activity (PA) behavior, barriers and facilitators to PA during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods This cross-sectional study assessed adults using a survey comprised of two parts: (a) demographics and general health and; (b) PA-related questions. The survey link was disseminated via email and various social media, and was active from September to October 2020. Results A total of 277 adults (Mean ± SD; age = 32.6 ± 13.6 years, BMI = 27.1 ± 16.5 kg/m2) were evaluated. A majority of the sample was female (67%), single (53%) and White (70%). About a third of the participants reported good mental and physical health, with a similar amount reporting weight gain during the pandemic. Participants further reported on average 271 min of PA/week, and 5.7 h/day of sitting time. Overall, 41.5% of the participants reported a decrease in PA during the COVID-19 pandemic, but those not meeting PA recommendations reported higher rates (67.9%) of decrease in levels of PA than their active counterparts (23.6%); x2 (2, N = 277) = 55.757, p < 0.01. Over 50% of the participants reported engaging in PA at home, with significantly more females (43.5%) than males (17.6%) making use of live stream PA/exercise session opportunities; x2 (2, N = 277) = 18.896, p < 0.001. “Closed gyms” and “more time” were reported as the main negative and positive factors, respectively, affecting PA during the pandemic. Conclusions Our findings suggest that PA behavior was negatively affected in US adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that “closed gym” (i.e., barrier), and “more time” (i.e., facilitator), were the main factors reported affecting PA participation. Given the well-known public health importance of PA, it is paramount that public health initiatives focus on providing not only educational but also environmental opportunities and support for PA during this period.

Abstract
Japanese adults spent on average 5.3 h each day sedentary. Compared to other countries, more adults were found to be highly sedentary in Japan. High sedentary time was associated with several sociodemographic characteristics.
Sedentary behaviour is associated with risks of detrimental health outcomes. It is crucial to understand how much time people spend in sedentary behaviour and what factors affect too much sedentary time for effective intervention. However, few studies examined the prevalence and the correlates of sedentary behaviour in Japan. Therefore, we assessed total sedentary time and its sociodemographic correlates using a nationally representative sample of adults in Japan. Cross-sectional data from Sports-Life Survey in 2016 and 2018 conducted by Sasagawa Sports Foundation was used. Participants’ sociodemographic factors and total sedentary time were collected by questionnaires. We classified those with <8 h/day of total sedentary time as “low-sedentary” and those with ≥8 h/day of total sedentary time as “high-sedentary”. A multiple logistic regression model was applied to calculate adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the association of each variable with the “high-sedentary” group (≥8 h/day). In total, 5,346 participants were included in the analyses. On average, time spent in sedentary behaviour was 5.3 h/day (SD = 3.7) among Japanese adults. The percentage of “high-sedentary” was 25.3% (95% CI: 24.1–26.4) and higher body mass index (≥25 kg/m2), being unmarried, unemployment, and higher educational level (graduate school or university) were positively associated with being “high-sedentary”. In conclusion, higher sedentary time was among people with higher body mass index, being unmarried, unemployed, and higher education. Intervention for reducing sedentary time should be developed, targeting people with these characteristics.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the time spent on sitting per day, level of serum High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and the association between sitting time and level of serum hs-CRP among obese women. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Sixty eight (68) obese women were recruited. They were signed informed consent form prior to the questionnaire answered. Then, sample blood test was taken to check for hs-CRP level. Sitting time spent in hours was found to be not significantly associated with hs-CRP level (p=0.391) among obese women. Longer sitting time spent per day more than 4h is the factor of obesity and hs-CRP level will be higher in obese women compared to normal people. This study can be baseline data for healthcare professionals and may contribute to develop awareness platform on maintaining normal body mass index among women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Reducing sedentary behavior contributes to healthy aging. In order to develop sedentary behavior interventions, insight is needed into older adults' perceptions of (reducing) sedentary behavior. Therefore, this systematic review aims to synthesize qualitative evidence of older adults' perceptions towards (a) the concept of sedentary behavior, (b) barriers and facilitators of sedentary behavior, and (c) solutions and strategies to reduce sedentary behavior. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A systematic search was conducted in four electronic databases. Inclusion criteria comprised qualitative and mixed-methods studies investigating the perceptions of older adults (mean age: ≥60 years) towards (reducing) sedentary behavior. Quality of the included studies was rated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) Qualitative Checklist. Relevant data on older adults' perceptions were extracted and imported into NVivo. Two independent reviewers analyzed the data by means of thematic synthesis (line-by-line coding, constructing descriptive (sub)themes, developing analytical themes). RESULTS Fifteen studies were included. Four analytical themes were developed to be considered when aiming to reduce sedentary behavior in older adults: the lack of knowledge on/awareness of sedentary behavior, the habitual nature of sedentary behavior, the importance of enjoyment and convenience, and the key role of aging. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS The reduction of older adults' sedentary behavior will likely be challenging as sedentary behavior seems to be firmly incorporated into older adults' daily routines, and strongly linked with positive reinforcement. Both aspects deserve thoughtful attention by intervention developers and health care professionals who aim to promote healthy aging by reducing sedentary behavior.

Abstract
Although physical activity and sedentary behaviour have established associations with mental illness, the extent to which they impact on mental wellbeing is not well understood. We examined associations between moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sitting time (ST) and mental wellbeing in 4526 participants from the 1970 British Cohort Study (UK) in the age 46 survey (2016-18). MVPA and ST were measured using a thigh mounted accelerometer device (activPAL 3 micro) worn continuously for 7 days and participants completed the 14-item Warwick-Edinburg Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) to assess mental wellbeing. In linear regression models MVPA (per hr) was associated with an additional 0.57 points on the WEMWBS (95% CI 0.03-1.12) regardless of gender, wear time, education, socioeconomic status, smoking, body mass index, disability and psychological distress. ST was not associated with WEMWBS in the adjusted models (B = -0.11, -0.23, 0.02). In MVPA stratified analyses, ST showed a linear trend with WEMBS in participants with low levels of MVPA but not in medium and high MVPA categories. In this large, nationally representative cohort, device-measured MVPA showed an association with higher mental wellbeing whilst ST was only associated with reduced mental wellbeing in participants with low levels of MVPA. Our main limitation was the cross-sectional design which precludes any inference of direction of association or causality. Nevertheless, interventions to promote MVPA may be an effective public health policy to promote mental wellbeing. Further investigation of the effect different sitting behaviours has on mental wellbeing is warranted.

Abstract
Background Sedentary behavior is influenced by contextual, social, and individual factors, including the built environment. However, associations between the built environment and sitting time have not been extensively investigated in countries with economies in transition such as Brazil. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between sitting-time and access to a mix of destinations for adults from Sao Paulo city, Brazil. Methods This study uses data from the Health Survey of Sao Paulo. Sedentary behavior was assessed by a questionnaire using two questions: total sitting time in minutes on a usual weekday; and on a usual weekend day. The mix of destinations was measured by summing the number of facilities (comprising bus stops, train/subway stations, parks, squares, public recreation centres, bike paths, primary health care units, supermarkets, food stores, bakeries, and coffee-shops) within 500 m of each participant’s residence. Minutes of sitting time in a typical weekday and weekend day were the outcomes and the mix of destinations score in 500 m buffers was the exposure variable. Associations between the mix of destinations and sitting time were examined using multilevel linear regression: these models accounted for clustering within census tracts and households and adjusted for environmental, sociodemographic, and health-related factors. Results After adjustment for covariates, the mix of destinations was inversely associated with minutes of sitting time on a weekday (β=− 8.8, p=0.001) and weekend day (β=− 6.1, p=0.022). People who lived in areas with a greater mix of destinations had shorter average sitting times. Conclusion Greater mix of destinations within 500 m of peoples’ residences was inversely associated with sitting time on a typical weekday and weekend day. In Latin American cities like Sao Paulo built environments more favorable for walking may contribute to reducing sedentary behavior and prevent associated chronic disease.

Abstract
During the recovery period, athletes present high sedentary behaviour (SB). In non-athletes, there is a direct relationship between SB and obesity. However, little is known about this relationship in athletes. We hypothesized that different types of SB entail different associations with body composition outcomes.We examined the associations between different types of SB and body composition outcomes in 135 athletes (70 males) aged 21.3 ± 3.9 years old. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was performed to assess fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM) and trunk fat mass (TFM). A validated SB questionnaire (PACE) was used to estimate total SB and specific sedentary pursuits on an average day. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed, adjusting for age, sex, weekly training time, years of sport practice, and sport type.A positive association was found for total SB and total screen time with %TFM (β = 0.220, p = 0.038 and β = 0.319, p = 0.040, respectively), while an inverse association was found for %FFM (β = -0.214, p = 0.042 and β = -0.310, p = 0.026). A higher total screen time was related with a higher %FM (β = 0.283, p = 0.035). With a much stronger effect size, cell phone screen time was positively related with %FM (β = 1.447, p = 0.001).There is still debate whether high levels of physical activity can fully counteract the harms of SB. These findings suggest that SB, particularly cell phone screen time, can compromise athletes' body composition, regardless of weekly training time. Sport federations and coaches may improve athletes' body composition by targeting specific sedentary pursuits, i.e. total screen time and cell phone screen time, during athletes' recovery time.Highlights Even in athletes, SB can compromise total and regional body composition regardless of high training time.Screen time, specifically cell phone screen time seems to be the sedentary pursuit to target in athletes.Sport federations and coaches must control SB during athletes' recovery time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some types of sedentary behaviors tend to cluster in individuals or groups of older adults. Insight into how these different types of sedentary behavior cluster is needed, as recent research suggests that not all types of sedentary behavior may have the same negative effects on physical and mental health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify sex-specific typologies of older adults' sedentary behavior, and to examine their associations with health-related and socio-demographic factors. METHODS Cross-sectional data were collected as part of the BEPAS Seniors, and the Busschaert study among 696 Flemish older adults (60+). Typologies of self-reported sedentary behavior were identified using latent profile analysis, and associations with health-related and sociodemographic factors were examined using analyses of variances. RESULTS Five distinct typologies were identified from seven sedentary behaviors (television time, computer time, transport-related sitting time, sitting for reading, sitting for hobbies, sitting for socializing and sitting for meals) in men, and three typologies were identified from six sedentary behaviors (television time, transport-related sitting time, sitting for reading, sitting for hobbies, sitting for socializing and sitting for meals) in women. Typologies that are characterized by high television time seem to be related to more negative health outcomes, like a higher BMI, less grip strength, and a lower physical and mental health-related quality-of-life. Typologies that are represented by high computer time and motorized transport seem to be related to more positive health outcomes, such as a lower body mass index, more grip strength and a higher physical and mental health-related quality-of-life. CONCLUSIONS Although causal direction between identified typologies and health outcomes remains uncertain, our results suggests that future interventions should better focus on specific types of sedentary behavior (e.g. television time), or patterns of sedentary behavior, rather than on total sedentary behavior.

Abstract
Background There are few studies on the hyperuricemia (HUA) and moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (PA) and also hardly regarding sitting time (ST). The purpose of this study was to examine the independent and interactive association of PA and ST with HUA. Methods A cross-sectional analysis was performed on 38,855 participants (aged 18–79) enrolled from the Henan Rural Cohort Study at baseline (2015 to 2017). PA and ST levels were assessed by using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). HUA was defined as a serum uric acid level of > 7.0 mg/dL for males and > 6.0 mg/dL for females. Multivariable logistic regression and linear regression models were applied to examine the independent association between PA or ST and HUA and serum uric acid level. Interaction plots were used to visualize the interaction effects of PA and ST on HUA. Results PA level was inversely related with serum uric acid level (β − 0.15, 95% confidence interval (CI) − 0.22, − 0.07), but ST was positively related with uric acid level (β 2.12, 95% CI 1.90, 2.34). Metabolic equivalent (MET-hour/day) was associated with decreased prevalence of HUA (odds ratio (OR) 0.97, 95% CI 0.96, 0.99), while per hour increased for ST was associated with increased HUA (OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.04, 1.06). The interaction of PA and ST was significant (P < 0.001). Conclusion Exposure to higher ST was independently related to increased prevalence of HUA, while vigorous PA with a decreased HUA prevalence. Meanwhile, higher daily ST might attenuate the protective effect of PA on HUA. Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to explore association of physical activity and sitting time with overweight/obesity in Chinese occupational populations for the development of intervention and prevention strategies for obesity. METHODS A total of 23,112 participants were selected from the 2010-2012 China National Nutrition and Health Survey (CNNHS). A logistics regression model was used to examine the associations of physical activity and sitting time with overweight/obesity by gender after adjusting for age, educational level, marital status, and family economic level. RESULTS The prevalence of overweight/obesity based on the WHO definition and the WGOC definition was 30.8% and 41.3%, respectively. Male employees with moderate and heavy occupation activity intensity had a lower risk for overweight/obesity than those with light occupation activity intensity (moderate: OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.82-0.98; heavy: OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.65-0.86), and the risk of overweight/obesity of male employees with long work-time spent sitting was higher than those with short work-time spent sitting (2-4.9 h/day: OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.14-1.40; ≥5 h/day: OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.15-1.44). The risk of overweight/obesity of male employees with active transportation mode was lower than those with inactive transportation mode (OR 0.91, 95% CI 0.84-0.99), while the risk of overweight/obesity of female employees with active transportation mode was higher (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.04-1.25). Female employees with leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) for ≥150 min/week had lower risk of overweight/obesity than those with LTPA for <150 min/week (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.56-0.84). There was no significant association of leisure-time sitting and housework time with overweight/obesity in Chinese occupational populations. CONCLUSION Occupation activity intensity, LTPA, transportation mode, and work sitting time were associated with overweight/obesity. Reducing work sitting time, moderate and heavy occupation activity intensity, and an active transportation mode could help male employees decrease the risk of overweight/obesity. Increasing leisure-time physical activity could reduce the risk of overweight/obesity in women. Our findings provided insight into the association of physical activity and sitting time with overweight/obesity. It will be necessary to carry out workplace-based interventions, have an active transportation mode, and increase leisure-time physical activity to decrease the risks of overweight/obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine associations of active school commuting (ASC) with time spent in physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) among adolescents. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Global School-based Student Health Survey data from 277,833 adolescents aged 11-17 years (48.9% girls), collected during 2007-2016, were analysed. Adolescents were asked how many days per week they walked or bicycled to and from school, were physically active, and how much time they spent sitting on a typical day. ASC was defined as ≥3 days/week, meeting PA recommendations as ≥60min/day, high SB as leisure-time sitting ≥3h/day. Multilevel logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the association estimates. RESULTS Adolescents who used ASC≥3 days/week had over double the odds of meeting PA recommendations (OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 2.01-2.12), after adjusting for a set of covariates. Adolescents who reported ASC≥3 days/week had 17% lower odds of reporting high SB (0.83, 0.81-0.85). The estimated OR of ASC and PA was 2.57 (2.31-2.86) in low-income and 1.84 (1.75-1.94) in high-income countries. Adolescents with ASC≥3 days/week had 22% lower odds of reporting high SB in African and Eastern Mediterranean regions (0.78, 0.73-0.84 and 0.75-0.82, respectively). Country-wise estimates of the associations are presented. CONCLUSIONS ASC is strongly and positively associated with PA recommendations and moderately with lower SB in adolescents. These estimates vary across WHO regions and by country's income. Promoting ASC has the potential to promote active lifestyle among adolescents around the globe.

Abstract
The pandemic of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) may be affecting the physical activity (PA) level in much of the population. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior (SB) among adults with chronic diseases and their associations with sociodemographic factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study included 249 participants (age: 18–91 years; 61.4% female) with chronic conditions and attended the Family Health Strategy program in a small town in Brazil. Data were collected between 2020-07–13 and 2020-07-24 by face-to-face interviews. Self-reported PA, sitting time, chronic diseases, medication use, sociodemographic data, and self-isolation adherence were obtained by questionnaire. During this specific time point of the COVID-19 pandemic, 71.5% of participants did not meet the PA recommendations (≥500 METs-min/week), and the prevalence of SB risk (≥4 h sitting) was 62.7%. Adjusted logistic regression indicated that male participants (odds ratio [OR]: 1.89 [95% CI 1.02–3.53]), living alone (OR: 2.92 [95% CI 1.03–8.30]) or in a two-person household (OR: 2.32 [95% CI 1.16–4.63]), and those who reported sometimes performing self-isolation (OR: 3.07 [95% CI 1.47–6.40]) were more likely to meet the minimum PA recommendations. Current smokers had a lower odds (OR: 0.36 [95% CI 0.14–0.95]) of meeting the PA recommendations. Older participants (OR: 2.18 [95% CI 1.06–4.50]) and those who had multimorbidity (OR: 1.92 [95% CI 1.07–3.44]) were more likely to have a higher degree of SB. There is an urgent need to mitigate physical inactivity and SB, and public health interventions must take into account sociodemographic status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This secondary analysis study examined the effects of a 6-week theory-based planning and mHealth text message intervention targeting workplace sitting time on health-related quality of life and work performance in office workers. DESIGN Office-working adults (Mage=45.18 ± 11.33 years) were randomised into either a planning + text message intervention (n = 29) or control (n = 31) condition. OUTCOME MEASURES Workplace sitting time, time spent in specific non-sedentary behaviours (e.g. standing), health-related outcomes (i.e. emotional well-being, energy/fatigue, perceived role limitations), and work performance were assessed at baseline and week 6. RESULTS Significant group by time interaction effects, that favoured the intervention group, were found for perceived role limitations due to emotional health problems and emotional well-being. No significant interaction effects emerged for energy/fatigue, role limitations due to physical health problems or work performance. Significant correlations in the expected direction were found between sedentary/non-sedentary behaviours and health-related outcomes. No significant mediation effects were found to suggest the intervention affected health-related outcomes through reductions in sedentary behaviour. CONCLUSION Reducing workplace sitting improves emotional well-being and contributes to fewer perceived role limitations due to emotional health problems among office workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Higher levels of sedentary behavior (SB) may be associated with decreased happiness but there are no studies on this topic. Thus, we investigated this association, and its influential factors among middle-aged and older adults using nationally representative datasets from six low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). STUDY DESIGN Community-based cross-sectional data from the Global Ageing and Adult Health study were analyzed. SB was assessed with the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression and mediation analyses were performed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Happiness was assessed with a cross-culturally validated single-item question (5-point scale) with higher scores indicating higher levels of happiness. RESULTS The final sample included 34,129 adults aged 50 years or more (mean age = 62.4 ± SD 16 years; 51.9 % female). After adjusting for multiple confounders, increased time spent in SB (hours/day) was associated with lower happiness levels (OR = 0.96; 95 % CI = 0.94-0.98). Mobility limitations, cognitive complaints, pain/discomfort, sleep problems and disability explained the largest proportion of the association between SB and happiness. CONCLUSIONS SB was linked with lower levels of happiness in middle-aged and older adults from LMICs, although a high level of between-country heterogeneity was observed. Longitudinal and interventional studies among older people in LMICs are warranted to assess directionality and the potential for reduction in SB to improve mental well-being in this population.

Abstract
Effective ways to reduce sedentary behaviour in adolescents are needed to mitigate the risk of chronic disease and poor mental health. Organised sport participation is the most practiced physical activity during adolescence. However, the influence sport participation has on sedentary behaviours remains unclear. This study investigated the associations between sport participation, total and domain-specific sedentary behaviour and physical activity during the transition from secondary school to university. A 3-year longitudinal survey followed Spanish secondary school students (n = 113) to their first year of university. Generalized linear models, adjusted by gender and year, assessed the relationships between sport participation, total and domain-specific sedentary behaviour and physical activity. Compared with non-sport participants, teenagers who played individual sports from baseline during secondary school spent significantly less total time sitting (- 110.5 min/day at weekends), watching television (- 18.7 min/day at weekends) or using the computer for leisure (- 37.4 min/day weekdays). Those who played team sports from baseline at secondary school spent less time sitting (- 126.4 min/day at weekends) or socialising (- 37 min/day at weekends)Conclusion: From secondary school to university, sport participation-based interventions might be an effective strategy to reduce sitting time spent on some domain-specific behaviours. Promoting sports could reduce the rise of sedentary behaviour during adolescence, a stage where sedentary behaviour evolves. What is Known: • Sitting too much and for too long is an important risk factor during adolescence. • Replacing adolescent's sedentary time with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity has been associated with a better quality of life. What is New: • Playing sport is associated with spending less time in total SB on the transition from high school to college. • Not all SB domains are linked to sport participation with associations differing from whether participants played individual or team sports.

Abstract
Background To examine the association between sitting time and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease among South Koreans aged ≥20 years. Methods Data from the 2016–2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used for the analysis. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was diagnosed according to a hepatic steatosis index of > 36. Sitting time was categorized into as Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 using the age-adjusted quartile with Q4 being the longest sitting hour. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between sitting time and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in South Korean population. Results A total of 13,518 participants were enrolled. The odds for having NAFLD in Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 (sitting hours) were 1.07 (CI: 0.88–1.31), 1.16 (CI: 1.96–1.41), and 1.34 (CI: 1.11–1.61), respectively. The odds ratio increased in magnitude with longer hours of sitting time (test for trend: P-value = 0.0002). Conclusion Advising physical exercises and discouraging sedentary activities may help to alleviate NAFLD among the South Korean population.

Abstract
Background There is increasing concern about the time people spend in sedentary behaviour, including screen time, leisure and occupational sitting. The number of both primary research studies (published trials) and reviews has been growing rapidly in this research area. A summary of the highest level of evidence that provides a broader quantitative synthesis of diverse types of interventions is needed. This research is to articulate the evidence of efficacy of sedentary behaviour interventions to inform interventions to reduce sitting time. The umbrella review, therefore, synthesised systematic reviews that conducted meta-analyses of interventions aiming at reducing sedentary behaviour outcomes across all age group and settings. Method A systematic search was conducted on six databases (MEDLINE Complete, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Global Health via EBSCOhost platform, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Systematic Reviews). Included articles were systematic reviews with meta-analysis of interventions aiming at reducing sedentary behaviour (screen time, sitting time or sedentary time) in the general population across all age group. Results Seventeen reviews met the inclusion criteria (7 in children and adolescent, 10 in adults). All reviews of sedentary behaviour interventions in children and adolescents investigated intervention effectiveness in reducing screen time. Six out of 11 meta-analyses (reported in 7 reviews) showed small but significant changes in viewing time. All reviews of sedentary behaviour interventions in office workplaces indicated substantial reduction in occupational sitting time (range: 39.6 to 100 min per 8-h workday). Sub-group analyses reported a trend favouring environmental change components such as sit-stand desks, active permissive workstations etc. Meta-analyses indicated that sedentary behaviour interventions were superior to physical activity alone interventions or combined physical activity and sedentary behaviour interventions in reducing sitting time. Conclusion The current systematic reviews and meta-analyses supported sedentary behaviour interventions for reducing occupational sitting time in particular, with small changes seen in screen time in children and adolescents. Future research should explore approaches to maintaining behaviour change beyond the intervention period and investigate the potential of sedentary behaviour reduction interventions in older age groups in non-occupational settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity and sedentary behavior are related with psycho-social variables among youth, however its relationship with bullying victimization is unclear. The aim of the study was to clarify the associations between physical activity and sedentary behaviors with bullying victimization among children and adolescents. METHODS Two independent authors searched in four databases. The studies were selected/included only if participants were children and/or adolescents and the relationship between physical activity and/or sedentary behavior with bullying victimization was reported. Random-effects meta-analyses were used. RESULTS A total of 18 cross-sectional studies (including 386,740 children and adolescents, 51.8% females) were reviewed. Our study found that not meeting the physical activity guidelines (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04 to 1.23) and excessive sedentary behavior (i.e., 2 h per day or more of screen time) (OR = 1.21, 95% CI, 1.14 to 1.28) were associated with 14 and 21% higher bullying victimization, respectively. Consistent associations were also found when we analyzed specific forms of bullying for sedentary behavior, including traditional and cyberbullying. CONCLUSIONS The present study establishes the first quantitative framework for understanding the influence of physical activity and sedentary behavior on bullying victimization, and lays the groundwork for future studies and interventions aimed to its promotion. Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolonged sitting time is a risk factor for chronic disease, yet recent global surveillance is not well described. The aims were to clarify: (i) the countries that have collected country-level data on self-reported sitting time; (ii) the single-item tools used to collect these data; and (iii) the duration of sitting time reported across low- to high-income countries. METHODS Country-level data collected within the last 10 years using single-item self-report were included. The six-stage methodology: (1) reviewing Global Observatory for Physical Activity! Country Cards; (2-4) country-specific searches of PubMed, the Demographic and Health Survey website and Google; (5) analysing the Eurobarometer 88.4; and (6) country-specific searches for World Health Organization STEPwise reports. RESULTS A total of 7641 records were identified and screened for eligibility. Sixty-two countries (29%) reported sitting time representing 47% of the global adult population. The majority of data were from high-income (61%) and middle income (29%) countries. The tools used were the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ; n = 34), a modified IPAQ (n = 1) or the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ; n = 27). The median of mean daily sitting times was 4.7 (IQR: 3.5-5.1) hours across all countries. Higher-income countries recorded a longer duration of sitting time than lower-income countries (4.9 vs 2.7 h). CONCLUSIONS This study provides an updated collation of countries collecting self-reported sitting time data. The daily sitting time findings should be interpreted cautiously. Current surveillance of sitting time is limited by a lack of coverage. Measures of population sitting time that are valid, feasible and sensitive to change should be embedded within global surveillance systems, to help guide future policy, research and practice. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although sedentary behavior is a risk factor of cardiometabolic diseases and mortality, little information is available about a clinical impact of occupational sedentary behavior on chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS The present retrospective cohort study included 10,212 workers of a national university in Japan who underwent annual health checkups between April 2006 and March 2013. Main exposure of interest was self-reported occupational sedentary behavior at the baseline visit. The outcome was the incidence of proteinuria defined as dipstick urinary protein of 1 + or more. The association between sedentary workers and the incidence of proteinuria was assessed using Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for clinically relevant factors, including television viewing time, the major home sedentary behavior. RESULTS During median 4.8 years (interquartile range 2.1-7.9) of the observational period, the incidence of proteinuria was observed in 597 (12.0%) males and 697 (13.3%) females. In males, sedentary workers were identified as a significant predictor of proteinuria (multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio of non-sedentary and sedentary workers: 1.00 [reference] and 1.35 [1.11-1.63]), along with longer television viewing time (< 30 min, 30-60 min, 1-2 h, 2-3 h, and > 3 h/day: 1.15 [0.93-1.42], 1.00 [reference], 1.24 [1.00-1.53], 1.41 [1.03-1.93], and 1.77 [1.13-2.76]), whereas not daily exercise time. In females, neither sedentary workers nor television viewing time was associated with the incidence of proteinuria. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, male sedentary workers were at high risk of proteinuria. Occupational sedentary behavior may be a potentially modifiable target for the prevention of CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies characterize older adult physical activity and sitting patterns using accurate accelerometer and concurrent posture measures. In this descriptive paper, we report accelerometer data collection protocols, consent rates, and physical behavior measures from a population-based cohort study (Adult Changes in Thought, ACT). METHODS The ACT study holds enrollment steady at approximately 2000 members of Kaiser Permanente Washington aged 65+ without dementia undergoing detailed biennial assessments. In 2016 the ACT-Activity Monitor (ACT-AM) sub-study was initiated to obtain data from wearing activPAL and ActiGraph devices for 7 days following regular biennial visits. We describe the methods protocol of ACT-AM and present characteristics of people who did and did not consent to wear devices. We compute inverse probability of response weights and incorporate these weights in linear regression models to estimate means and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of device-based pattern metrics, adjusted for wear time and demographic factors, and weighted to account for potential selection bias due to device-wear consent. RESULTS Among 1885 eligible ACT participants, 56% agreed to wear both devices (mean age 77 years, 56% female, 89% non-Hispanic white, 91% with post-secondary education). On average, those who agreed to wear devices were younger and healthier. Estimated mean (95% CI) activPAL-derived sitting, standing, and stepping times were 10.2 h/day (603-618 min/day), 3.9 h/day (226-239 min/day), and 1.4 h/day (79-84 min/day), respectively. Estimated mean ActiGraph derived sedentary (Vector Magnitude [VM] < =18 counts/15 s), light intensity (VM 19-518 counts/15 s), and moderate-to-vigorous intensity (VM > 518 counts/15 s) physical activity durations were 9.5 h/day (565-577 min/day), 4.5 h/day (267-276 min/day), and 1.0 h/day (59-64 min/day). Participants who were older, had chronic conditions, and were unable to walk a half-mile had higher sedentary time and less physical activity. CONCLUSIONS Our recruitment rate demonstrates the feasibility of cohort participants to wear two devices that measure sedentary time and physical activity. Data indicate high levels of sitting time in older adults but also high levels of physical activity using cut-points developed for older adults. These data will help researchers test hypotheses related to physical behavior and health in older adults in the future.
