Abstract
Many biomass wastes or their modified forms have been investigated as heavy metal adsorbents. However, less emphasis has been placed on post-adsorbent management or possible further utilization. In this study, biochar (BC) derived from modified bamboo adsorbent after the adsorption of Cu from an aqueous solution was used for the in situ remediation of lake sediment contaminated with Cd and Cu. The results indicated that the Cu concentration was extremely low (≤0.015 mg/L), while Cd was not detected in the overlying water or the interstitial water after the 90-day BC treatment. The pH value (7.5-8.1) slightly increased, and the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) leachability of the Cu and Cd in the sediment decreased overall. Cu and Cd were preferentially transformed into more stable species. The findings highlighted the potential possibility of BC derived from post-adsorbent being used for sediment remediation. However, the BC addition produced significant effects on the sediment microbial activity and community structure. In general, with an increase in BC, the urease activity increased, while the alkaline phosphatase and invertase activity decreased, which could be attributed to the BC itself. In addition, significant changes in both bacterial and fungal genera were observed. Hence, a cautious approach should be taken in the practical application of BC.

Abstract
Juveniles and adults of Acanthopagrus arabicus were studied to compare the effect of different salt concentrations (1.5, 7.5, 15, 30 and 45 psu) at 6, 24, 48 and 96 h on activities of the enzymes creatine kinase (CK) in gills, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in plasma and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in intestine. CK and LDH were found to exhibit superior activity in adults compared to juveniles. All enzymes exhibited heightened activity with the increase in salinity and decreased activity with the passage of time in all salinities. Results showed that three enzymes exhibited excellent performance in adults than in juveniles.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of fructose levels on yeast growth, metabolic pathways and products, and redox status were investigated by simulated dough medium. The results showed that yeast was subjected to oxidative stress and damage under both sugar-free and high-fructose conditions. Yeast has a strong ability to metabolize pentose phosphate, trehalose, and tricarboxylic acid under sugar-free conditions. In the high fructose environment, yeast preferentially produced trehalose and glycerol in the early stage and gradually increased the metabolism of pentose phosphate in the later stage. Compared with the low fructose concentration, yeast had stronger pentose phosphate and tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) metabolism to ensure nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content in higher fructose levels. Therefore, sugar-free and high fructose levels affected the growth of yeast cells and yeast responded to fructose levels by regulating the metabolic carbon flow of glycolysis, pentose phosphate, trehalose, and TCA.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of calcium levels on structure and function of mitochondria under high glucose environment were studied. In the high glucose environment, yeast growth capacity was inhibited, and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) content was increased from 6 h to 12 h, while ROS content was reduced in group with 1 × 10-1 and 1 g/L CaCl2 level from 24 h to 36 h. Exogenous calcium addition had a significant effect on the elevation of intracellular Ca2+ and cytochrome C content in yeast from 6 h to 12 h; mitochondrial membrane potential decreased with the increase of CaCl2 level under high glucose levels. Mitochondrial swelling of yeast was influenced by high glucose levels and showed a regulatory dynamic change by Ca2+ levels. Isocitrate dehydrogenase activity increased in 1 × 10-3 g/L CaCl2 level from 6 h to 12 h, α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase activity increased with an increase in CaCl2 level from 6 h to 24 h. Calcium affected the structure and function of mitochondria by regulating the intracellular signal, enzymes in tricarboxylic acid cycle, and cytochrome system of yeast under high glucose stress.

Abstract
Wildfires constitute a source of contamination to both freshwater and marine ecosystems. This study aimed to compare the antioxidant defense response of the freshwater clam Corbicula fluminea and the marine cockle (Cerastoderma edule) to wildfire ash exposure and the concomitant metal body burden. Organisms were exposed to different concentrations (0%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%) of aqueous extracts of Eucalypt ash (AEAs) from a moderate-to-high severity wildfire. The activity of various enzymes, as well as lipid peroxidation, protein content, and metal body burden, were determined after 96 h of exposure. A significant increase in the protein content of soft tissues was observed for C. edule at AEA concentrations ≥ 25%, unlike for C. fluminea. Similarly, significant effects on lipid peroxidation were observed for cockles, but not for clams. For both species, a significant effect in the total glutathione peroxidase activity was observed at AEA concentrations ≥ 25%. Relative to the control, AEAs-exposed clams showed higher Cd content, whereas AEAs-exposed cockles showed higher Cu content, thus exhibiting different responses to the exposure to wildfire ash. The susceptibility of bivalves to ashes, at environmentally relevant concentrations, raises concern about the effects of post-fire runoff to bivalve species.

Abstract
To decompose forest biomass, microorganisms use specific enzymes from the class of oxidoreductases and hydrolases, which are produced by bacteria and soil fungi. In post-agricultural forest soils, bacteria adapt more easily to changing ecological conditions than fungi. The unique features of bacteria, i.e., tolerance and the ability to degrade a wide range of chemical compounds, prompted us to conduct research that contributes to the improvement of the broadly understood circular management of biomass production and economic efficiency. This study aimed to analyze changes in the microbiological activity and the activities of dehydrogenases, catalase, β-glucosidase, urease, arylsulfatase, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase in the soil sampled from under Picea abies (Pa), Pinus sylvestris (Ps), Larix decidua (Ld), Quercus robur (Qr), and Betula pendula (Bp), after 19 years. The control object was unforested soil. The studies allowed one to demonstrate the relationship between the activity of soil enzymes and the assemblages of culturable microorganisms and bacteria determined by the metagenomic method and tree species. Thus, it is possible to design the selection of tree species catalyzing enzymatic processes in soil. The strongest growth promoter of microorganisms turned out to be Quercus robur L., followed by Picea abies L., whereas the weakest promoters appeared to be Pinus sylvestris L. and Larix decidua M.

Abstract
Cryptosporidiosis is caused by an opportunistic protozoan parasite (Cryptosporidium parvum and C. hominis) known as a parasite of humans, especially children and immunocompromised patients. The current study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of a mixture of fig and olive leaf extracts as an alternative medicinal plant. Parasitological examination for oocysts in the stool and histopathological alterations in the small intestines were examined. Additionally, biochemical analyses of liver and kidney functions in addition to antioxidant parameters such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH) and catalase (CAT) in the plasma were evaluated. Our results showed that marked reduction in oocysts shedding and amelioration in intestinal histopathological changes and hepatic or renal functions were detected in all treated groups compared to the control infected group. Additionally, the treated groups with tested extracts at ratios 1:3 and 1:5 showed a significant decrease in the number of oocysts compared to the other treated groups. Results exhibited a significant increase in the plasma SOD, CAT and GSH levels in treated groups compared to the infected control one. This study suggested that a mixture of fig and olive leaf extracts is a convenient promising therapeutic agent for Cryptosporidiosis.

Abstract
Mammal's saliva contains a variety of electrolytes and proteins. They carry out an important role in the digestion process, in the antibacterial and antiviral activity, in lubrication and maintenance of oral general health status. It may also contain several enzymes according to dietary habits and general wellness. Sialochemistry is a valid alternative to the haematochemical analysis for the evaluation of animal health and nutritional status. At present, very little knowledge is available on health status and pathology of crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata) and no data are yet available on salivary enzymes. Between 2018 and 2020, a preliminary investigation of enzymatic activity on saliva samples was carried out from captured porcupines. In crested porcupine saliva, enzymatic activity of trypsin, chymotrypsin, N-Aminopeptidase, amylase, lignin peroxidise, cellulase and chitinase were recorded. Superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase and alkaline phosphatase activity was also detected. The superoxide dismutase activity resulted higher (3.13 SD 3.58 U/mg proteins) than those of catalase (130.80 SD 110.65 mU/mg proteins) and glutathione S-transferase (20.21 SD 16.62 mM/mg proteins). Alkaline phosphatase activity resulted lower (5.91 SD 6.12 mU/mg proteins) than acidic phosphatase (19.00 SD 16.16 U/mg proteins) with the highest values of saliva alkaline phosphatases recorded in young individuals. These preliminary data bring new knowledge on crested porcupine saliva enzymes and may provide a useful tool for further investigation on the adaptive response of crested porcupine to different environmental condition and diet. Additional investigation concerning a possible alternative use of saliva enzymes as indicator of health and nutritional status of this rodent are desirable.

Abstract
Increasing demands by consumers for fresh, nutritional, and convenient food has led to the increase of fresh-cut produce market. Nowadays, there is a turn towards the investigation of natural products (i.e., essential oils, organic acids, and edible coatings) in an effort to lower the usage of chemical synthetic compounds (i.e., chlorine) as postharvest sanitizers. The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of Origanum majorana essential oil (EO), ascorbic acid (AA), chitosan, and their combinations on quality attributes of fresh-cut lettuce stored for six days at 7 °C. When applied, Chitosan+AA resulted to a less acceptable product (visual quality and aroma), while the application of marjoram EO was able to preserve the visual quality of fresh-cut lettuce and at the same time resulted in a pleasant aroma. The application of EO+AA and Chitosan+AA increased total phenolics and antioxidant levels of fresh-cut lettuce on the fourth and sixth day of storage. The EO and EO+AA increased damage index (hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation) of fresh-cut lettuce, while at the same time these treatments decreased the activity of enzymes related with plant tissue browning (i.e., peroxidase activity and polyphenol oxidase). Chitosan decreased total valuable counts and yeasts and molds counts on the sixth day of storage, while EO, AA, EO+Chitosan, and Chitosan+AA decreased yeasts and molds after four days of application. The findings of the present work indicating that the combination of marjoram EO, AA, and chitosan could be considered further as alternative means for fresh-cut produce preservation.

Abstract
In the current investigation, we studied role of Rhododendron leaf extract in Vigna radiata grown under chromium metal stress. We observed that seed treatment with Rhododendron leaf extract resulted in the recuperation of seedling growth under chromium toxicity. Seed treatment with Rhododendron leaf extract significantly improved the contents of anthocyanin and xanthophyll pigments under stress. The antioxidative defense system triggered after Rhododendron extract treatment, resulting in the increased actions of antioxidant enzymes. Oxidative stress induced by the assembly of reactive oxygen species was reduced after Rhododendron extract treatment under chromium toxicity as indicated by the enhanced contents of non-enzymatic antioxidants, namely ascorbic acid, tocopherol, and glutathione. Furthermore, Rhododendron leaf extract treatment under chromium metal stress also encouraged the biosynthesis of organic acids, polyphenols, as well as amino acids in Vigna radiata. Statistical analysis of the data with multiple linear regression also supported that Rhododendron leaf extract can effectively ease chromium metal-induced phytotoxicity in Vigna radiata.
