Eastern Canadian boreal forest soil and foliar chemistry show evidence of resilience to long-term nitrogen addition

The boreal forest is one of the world's largest terrestrial biome and plays crucial roles in global biogeochemical cycles, such as carbon (C) sequestration in vegetation and soil. However, the impacts of decades of N deposition on N-limited ecosystems, like the eastern Canadian boreal forest, remain unclear. For 13 years, N deposition was simulated by periodically adding ammonium nitrate on soils of two boreal coniferous forests (i.e., balsam fir and black spruce) of eastern Canada, at low (LN) and high (HN) rates, corresponding to 3 and 10 times the ambient N deposition, respectively. We show that more than a decade of N addition had no strong effects on mineral soil C, N, P, and cation concentrations and on foliar total Ca, K, Mg, and Mn concentrations. In organic soil, C stock was not affected by N addition while N stock increased, and exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ decreased at the balsam fir site under HN treatment. At both sites, LN treatment had nearly no impact on foliage and soil chemistry but foliar N and N:P significantly increased under HN treatment, potentially leading to foliar nutrient imbalance. Overall, our work indicates that, in the eastern Canadian boreal forest, soil and foliar nutrient concentrations and stocks are resilient to increasing N deposition potentially because, in the context of N limitation, extra N would be rapidly immobilized by soil micro-organisms and vegetation. These findings could improve modeling future boreal forest soil C stocks and biomass growth and could help in planning forest management strategies in eastern Canada.

Evaluation of ACC-deaminase-producing rhizobacteria to alleviate water-stress impacts in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants

Application of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is an environmentally sustainable option to reduce the effects of abiotic and biotic stresses on plant growth and productivity. Bacteria isolated from rain-fed agriculture field soils in the Central Himalaya Kumaun region, India, were evaluated for the production of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase. Those producing ACC deaminase in high amounts were evaluated for their potential to improve wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plant growth under irrigated and water-stress conditions in two glasshouse experiments. Some of the isolates also showed other plant-growth-promoting (PGP) traits, e.g., N₂ fixation, siderophore production, and phosphate solubilization; however, strains with higher ACC deaminase activity showed the greatest effects. These were Variovorax paradoxus RAA3; Pseudomonas spp. DPC12, DPB13, DPB15, DPB16; Achromobacter spp. PSA7, PSB8; and Ochrobactrum anthropi DPC9. In both simulated irrigated and water-stress conditions, a single inoculation of RAA3 and a consortium of DPC9 + DPB13 + DPB15 + DPB16 significantly improved wheat plant growth and foliar nutrient concentrations and caused significant positive changes in antioxidant properties compared with noninoculated plants especially under water stress. These findings imply that PGPB having ACC deaminase activity together with other PGP traits could potentially be effective inoculants to improve the growth of wheat plants in water-stressed rain-fed environments.

Tree mineral nutrition is deteriorating in Europe

The response of forest ecosystems to increased atmospheric CO2 is constrained by nutrient availability. It is thus crucial to account for nutrient limitation when studying the forest response to climate change. The objectives of this study were to describe the nutritional status of the main European tree species, to identify growth-limiting nutrients and to assess changes in tree nutrition during the past two decades. We analysed the foliar nutrition data collected during 1992-2009 on the intensive forest monitoring plots of the ICP Forests programme. Of the 22 significant temporal trends that were observed in foliar nutrient concentrations, 20 were decreasing and two were increasing. Some of these trends were alarming, among which the foliar P concentration in F. sylvatica, Q. Petraea and P. sylvestris that significantly deteriorated during 1992-2009. In Q. Petraea and P. sylvestris, the decrease in foliar P concentration was more pronounced on plots with low foliar P status, meaning that trees with latent P deficiency could become deficient in the near future. Increased tree productivity, possibly resulting from high N deposition and from the global increase in atmospheric CO2, has led to higher nutrient demand by trees. As the soil nutrient supply was not always sufficient to meet the demands of faster growing trees, this could partly explain the deterioration of tree mineral nutrition. The results suggest that when evaluating forest carbon storage capacity and when planning to reduce CO2 emissions by increasing use of wood biomass for bioenergy, it is crucial that nutrient limitations for forest growth are considered.

Influence of acidic mist on frost hardiness and nutrient concentrations in red spruce seedlings: 1. Exposure of the foliage and the rooting environment

Two-year-old red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) was grown in replicated open-top chambers supplied with charcoal-filtered air near Edinburgh, Scotland. Between May and November 1989, plants were exposed to four mist treatments, three containing sulphuric acid and ammonium nitrate in equimolar concentrations at 0.005 mol m^-3 (pH 5) or 1.0 mol m^-3 (pH 27), and a fourth treatment with sulphuric acid alone at 1.0 mol m³ (equivalent to 2 mm precipitation). Two dose rates were used for the pH 2.7 treatment equivalent to 2 and 8 mm of rain per week. Three subtreatments (soil surface exposed to mist, addition of extra sulphuric acid to the soil surface, exclusion of mist from the soil) were included in each chamber. Frost hardiness was assessed by measuring rates of electrolyte leakage after controlled freezing of detached shoots. At the end of October, frost hardiness, expressed as the lethal temperature for 50% of shoots (LT₅₀ ), was decreased by 8 °C in the 8 mm wk^-1 treatment at pH 27, compared to pH 5. The 2 mm wk^-1 treatment at pH 2.7 had no effect on frost hardiness either when ammonium nitrate was present or absent (i.e. sulphuric acid only). Excluding mist from the soil, and adding extra sulphuric acid, both increased frost hardiness by about 3 °C when compared with uncovered soil. Excluding mist from the soil increased the amount of foliage initiated and produced inside the chambers but neither subtreatment, excluding the mist nor providing additional sulphuric acid to the soil affected foliar nutrient concentrations. Mist of pH 27 as sulphuric acid alone and in combination with ammonium nitrate both enhanced N uptake. Several observations concerning the effect of acidic mist on frost hardiness were confirmed by this study: (i) preventing mist from reaching the soil/roots, improving conditions for root growth can ameliorate the effects of acidic mist on shoot growth and frost hardiness; (ii) the effect was determined by the ion dose but not by the ion concentration in the mist; (iii) the effect was primarily mediated through foliar absorption; (iv) the presence of high foliar nitrogen concentrations did not increase frost hardiness when foliar sulphur concentrations were also high; (v) low N concentrations were more important for frost hardiness than high foliar N concentrations.
