Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of puerarin (Pue), a phytoestrogen, on the production performance, egg quality, endocrine hormones, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal morphology in aged laying hens. A total of 180 Hy-Line Brown hens aged 480 d were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 45 per group) and fed 0, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg of Pue (Con, L-Pue, M-Pue, and H-Pue, respectively) during a 42-d experiment. Compared with the Con treatment, supplementation with H-Pue improved laying performance and egg quality by significantly increasing egg production, average egg weight, albumen height, yolk weight, and Haugh unit (P < 0.05) while decreasing the feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05). A diet supplemented with H-Pue significantly decreasing serum total triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase (P < 0.05), and significantly increasing serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and progesterone (P < 0.05). Antioxidant activity was improved by significantly increasing the activity of total antioxidant capacity, glutathione peroxidase and catalase but decreasing malondialdehyde levels in serum, jejunum, and ileum (P < 0.05), and superoxide dismutase activity exhibited a significantly increase in the jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05). Villus height and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth (P < 0.05) were significantly increased in the jejunum and ileum. In the jejunal and ileal mucosa, the three treatment groups increased the mRNA expression levels of Claudin-1 and Claudin-2 compared with Con (P < 0.05), and no significant effect was observed on the expression of Occludin and ZO-1. The results showed that dietary supplementation with Pue could improve the laying performance, egg quality, antioxidant capacity, hormonal profile, and intestinal morphology of aged laying hens.

Abstract
1. A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) supplementation on the reproductive performance, egg quality, eggshell ultrastructure, serum hormone level and antioxidant capacity, intestinal morphology and tibia quality of breeder geese during the laying period.2. The trial was designed as a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement with three levels (300, 400 and 500 IU/kg) of vitamin D3 supplementation and three levels (25, 50 and 75 μg/kg) of 25-OH-D3 supplementation in a 10-wk feeding trial.3. The results showed that the combined supplementation of 400 IU/kg vitamin D3 and 50 μg/kg 25-OH-D3 had a better feed conversion ratio and a higher egg laying rate than the other groups. Vitamin D3 supplementation significantly increased the rate of qualified eggs for hatching, eggshell strength and thickness, serum testosterone and progesterone levels, serum total superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities, tibia ash content and bone mineral density (P < 0.05). Dietary 25-OH-D3 supplementation significantly increased serum glutathione peroxidase activity and duodenal villus height and villus height-to-crypt-depth ratio (P < 0.05). The geese receiving 500 IU/kg vitamin D3 and 75 µg/kg 25-OH-D3 had the highest tibia calcium and phosphorous content among all groups (P < 0.05).4. Feeding 400 IU/kg vitamin D3 plus 50 µg/kg 25-OH-D3 gave optimal effects on feed conversion ratio and egg laying rate. This combination could be a nutritional strategy for increasing the laying rate, eggshell quality, serum hormone levels and serum antioxidant function regardless of 25-OH-D3 supplementation. Supplementation of 50 μg/kg 25-OH-D3 could be a recommended dose for improving the serum antioxidant capacity and intestinal morphology regardless of vitamin D3 supplementation.

Abstract
Water lilies are popular ornamental cut-flowers with significant economic and cultural value. However, stem bending affects the preservation of cut-flowers during their vase life. To gain further insights into the molecular mechanisms of stem bending, transcriptome profiling, hormone measurement, and morphological analysis were performed using the stems of the 'Blue Bird' water lily. Transcriptome analysis revealed that 607 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were associated with the dorsal and ventral stems of the water lily, of which 247 were up-regulated and 360 were down-regulated. Significant differences in genes associated with plant hormones, calcium ions, glucose metabolism, and photosynthesis pathways genes involved in the dorsal and ventral areas of the curved stem. In particular, DEGs were associated with the hormone synthesis, gravity response, starch granules, Ca2+ ions, and photosynthesis. The results of qRT-PCR were consistent with that of the transcriptome sequence analysis. A total of 12 hormones were detected, of which abscisic acid, indole-3-carboxaldehyde, indole-3-carboxaldehyde and jasmonic acid were significantly differentially expressed in the dorsal and ventral stems, and were significantly higher in the dorsal stem than in the ventral stem. The cell morphology in the dorsal and ventral areas of the curved stem clearly changed during vase life. The direction of starch granule settlement was consistent with the bending direction of the water lily stem, as well as the direction of gravity. In conclusion, stem bending in water lily cut-flowers is regulated by multiple factors and genes. This study provides an important theoretical basis for understanding the complex regulatory mechanism of water lily stem bending.

Abstract
Background Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) leads to not only infertile but several adverse health events to women. Traditional treatment methods have their own set of limitations and drawbacks that vary in degree. Application of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUCMSC) is a promising strategy for POI. However, there is a lack of literatures on application of hUCMSC in human. Animal experimental model, however, can reflect the potential effectiveness of this employment. This study aimed to evaluate the curative effect of hUCMSC on animals with POI on a larger scale. Methods To gather data, Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies published up to April 2022. Various indices, including the animals' estrous cycle, serum sex hormone levels, and follicle number in the ovary, were compared between the experimental group and those with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI). Results The administration of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSC) has been shown to significantly improve the estrous cycle (RR: 3.32, 95% CI: [1.80, 6.12], I2 = 0%, P = 0.0001), but robustly decrease its length (SMD: -1.97, 95% CI: [-2.58, -1.36], I2 = 0%, P < 0.00001). It can also strikingly increase levels of serum estradiol (SMD: 5.34, 95% CI: [3.11, 7.57], I2 = 93%, P < 0.00001) and anti-müllerian hormone (SMD: 1.92, 95% CI: [0.60, 3.25], I2 = 68%, P = 0.004). Besides, it lowers levels of serum follicle-stimulating hormone (SMD: -3.02, 95% CI: [-4.88, -1.16], I2 = 93%, P = 0.001) and luteinising hormone (SMD: -2.22, 95% CI: [-3.67, -0.76], I2 = 78%, P = 0.003), and thus collectively promotes folliculogenesis (SMD: 4.90, 95% CI: [3.92, 5.88], I2 = 0%, P < 0.00001). Conclusions Based on the presented findings, it is concluded that the administration of hUCMSC in animal models with POI can result in significant improvements in several key indicators, including estrous cycle recovery, hormone level modulation, and promotion of folliculogenesis. These positive outcomes suggest that hUCMSC may have potential as a treatment for POI in humans. However, further research is needed to establish the safety and efficacy of hUCMSC in humans before their clinical application. Abstract
RFamide-related peptides (RFRP) are synthesized by the hypothalamus and have a regulatory role in gonad development. The goal of this study was to investigate the association between SNP of the RFRP gene and the reproductive traits and hormone levels of Zhenning yellow chickens. The mRNA expression levels were detected based on different tissues, ages, and genotypes. Eleven mutation sites were detected in the RFRP gene, 4 of which were significantly related to reproductive traits and hormone levels. Association analysis revealed that A276G was associated with egg production at 300 d of age (EP300) and amount of prehierarchical follicles (P < 0.05). G1396A was associated with egg weight at 300 d of age and luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin levels (P < 0.05). G1694A showed significant associations with fertilization rate and LH levels (P < 0.05), and A2659G was associated with EP300 (P < 0.05). The results of expression analysis showed that the RFRP mRNA expression levels in the hypothalamus were higher than those in other tissues (P < 0.01). The expression in immature individuals was higher than that in mature ones (P < 0.01). There were also differences in mRNA expression levels between different genotypes (P < 0.05). In summary, the results of this study might provide potential markers and a theoretical basis for the improvement of chicken reproductive traits.

Abstract
FSH in infertile patients may be measured in the normal range and abnormal semen analysis findings may be observed in patients with normal FSH values. A recent study predicts that the sperm morphology and concentration may be impaired if the FSH value is above 4.5 IU/L. Therefore, this study aimed to define a clinically more useful upper limit for FSH as an indicator for male infertility. In this study 1,893 infertile male patients were evaluated retrospectively. Physical examination, hormone analysis (total testosterone (TT), FSH, luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and prolactin (PRL)), semen analyzes were recorded and analyzed retrospectively. Logistic regression analysis, 95% confidence intervals and probability ratios were calculated to show the relationship between categorical hormone levels (quarters) and semen parameters. Hormone levels were categorized using the distribution quarters in the study population. FSH values of 62% of the cases with sperm concentration <15 million/ml were greater than 4.8 IU/L. 59.7% of patients with sperm count <39 million had FSH values greater than 4.8 IU/L. In conclusion, FSH values above 4.8 IU/L were found to be abnormal when the male factor was investigated for infertility. Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of curcumin on laying performance, egg quality, biochemical indicators, hormone levels, and immune activity in hens under heat stress. Hy-Line brown hens (280-day-old) were fed with 0, 100, 150, and 200 mg/kg of curcumin during a 42-D experiment. Compared with the control treatment, supplementation with 150 mg/kg of curcumin improved laying performance and egg quality by significantly increasing egg production, eggshell thickness, eggshell strength (P < 0.01), and albumen height (P < 0.05) while decreasing the feed-to-egg ratio. Antioxidant activity was improved by significantly increasing the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase but decreasing malondialdehyde levels in serum (P < 0.05) and significantly increasing the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, IgG, IgA, and complement C3 activity in serum (P < 0.05). These results indicated that supplemental 150 mg/kg curcumin can improve productive performance, antioxidant enzyme activity, and immune function in laying hens under the heat stress conditions applied in the present study.

Abstract
RATIONALE Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (Morquio A) is a catabolic mucopolysaccharide disorder caused by galactose-6-sulfate sulfatase deficiency. It is an autosomal recessive inherited disease. Previous reports on clinical characteristics of Morquio A mainly focused on growth retardation, skeletal deformities, and organ damage in children and adolescents, while the effects of mucopolysaccharide metabolism disorders on endocrine hormone metabolism level have not been reported. Herein, we reported the endocrine hormone metabolism in a case diagnosed as Morquio A. PATIENT CONCERNS The patient was a 17-year-old girl with growth retardation, hearing loss, and severe skeletal dysplasia(scoliosis and chicken breast), and was evaluated to have normal nervous system function and intelligence by physicians. DIAGNOSES She was diagnosed as Morquio A based on gene analysis, mucopolysaccharide-related enzymes and her clinical features. INTERVENTIONS The patient didn't accepted the enzyme replacement therapy. OUTCOMES She had a homozygous mutation of the GALNS gene. The b-glucuronidase content in the blood was reduced. The serum sodium, serum adrenocorticotropic hormone, and cortisol rhythms (8 AM) were decreased. The levels of PRA(plasma renin activity) , PAII(plasma angiotensin II), and PALD(plasma aldosterone) were elevated. Bone mineral density suggests osteoporosis. There were no abnormalities in bone metabolism indicators, growth hormone, thyroid hormone, and sex hormones. In summary, the level of endocrine hormones in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis IV changes. LESSONS This is the report on endocrine hormone level in a patient with mucopolysaccharidosis IV in China. Due to the disease may have relatively incomplete adrenal function, which provides a basis for future understanding and diagnosis of this disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To discuss the therapeutic effects of electroacupuncture on benign prostatic hyperplasia and the impacts on hormone levels in the patients. METHODS Sixty patients were randomized into an electroacupuncture group and a medication group, 30 cases in each one. In the electroacupuncture group, electroacupuncture was applied to Zhongji (CV 3) and Qugu (CV 2), once a day, 5 times a week. In the medication group, tamsulosin hydrochloride sustained-release capsules were prescribed for oral administration, 0.2 mg, once a day. The duration of treatment was 6 weeks in both of the two groups. The changes in serum testosterone (T), estradiol (E2) and E2/T, the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) and its erectile function score (ⅡEF5) and serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) as well as the adverse reactions were observed before and after treatment in the two groups. The clinical therapeutic effects were compared between the two groups. RESULTS Before and after treatment, the differences in serum T, E2 and E2/T were not significant in the electroacupuncture group (all P>0.05); the difference in E2/T was significant in the medication group (P<0.05). The differences in serum T, E2 and E2/T were not significant between the two groups (all P>0.05). IPSS was reduced as compared with that before treatment in the electroacupuncture group (P<0.05) and was not different significantly as compared with that before treatment in the medication group (P>0.05). The difference was significant in comparison of the two groups after treatment (P<0.05), and the electroacupuncture group was better. After treatment, the symptom severity was reduced apparently in the electroacupuncture group and the overall situation was better than that in the medication group (P<0.05). ⅡEF5 score and PSA were not different significantly before and after treatment in the two groups and between the two groups (all P>0.05). The total effective rate was 60.7% (17/28) in the electroacupuncture group, apparently better than 30.8% (8/26, P<0.05) in the the medication group. CONCLUSIONS Electroacupucnture at Zhongji (CV 3) and Qugu (CV 2) apparently relieves the symptoms in the patients and the therapeutic effects are better than the oral administration of tamsulosin hydrochloride sustained-release capsules, but electroacupuncture has not apparent impacts on serum T and E2 levels.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary octacosanol supplementation on laying performance, egg quality, serum hormone levels, and gene expression related to reproductive axis in laying hens to confirm the reproduction-promoting function of octacosanol. In total, 360 Hy-Line Brown (67-wk-old) laying hens were randomly assigned to one of three treatments with 0, 5, and 10 mg octacosanol (extracted from rice bran, purity >92%)/kg feed. The feeding trial lasted for 10 weeks. The results showed that the dietary addition of 5 and 10 mg/kg octacosanol improved feed efficiency by 4.9% and 3.4% (P < 0.01), increased the albumen height by 20.5% and 13.3% (P < 0.01), the Haugh unit score by 12.9% and 8.7% (P < 0.01), and the eggshell strength by 39.5% and 24.5% (P < 0.01), respectively, compared with the control diet. Dietary octacosanol addition significantly affected serum triiodothyronine, estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone levels (P < 0.05), and progesterone and luteinizing hormone level (P < 0.01). Compared with the control, dietary addition of octacosanol at 5 mg/kg promoted the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) mRNA expression in different-sized follicles, and significantly increased the FSHR mRNA expression of granulosa cells from the F2 and F3 follicles (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation with both 5 and 10 mg/kg octacosanol promoted the mRNA expression of luteinizing hormone receptor and prolactin receptor in different-sized follicles, and significantly up-regulated the expression levels in F1 granulosa cells (P < 0.05). The ovarian weight was significantly increased with the dietary addition of 5 mg/kg octacosanol (P < 0.05). The numbers of small yellow follicles and large white follicles were increased with the addition of dietary 5 and 10 mg/kg octacosanol (P < 0.01). This study provides evidence that octacosanol has the capacity to improve reproductive performance, indicating that it is a potentially effective feed additive in egg production.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated that the agricultural antibiotic jinggangmycin (JGM) stimulates reproduction in the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens Stål and that the stimulation of brown planthopper reproduction induced by JGM is regulated by the fatty acid synthase (FAS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) genes. However, a key issue in the stimulation of reproduction induced by pesticides involves the growth and development of oocytes. Therefore, the present study investigated oocyte changes via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and changes in hormone levels (juvenile hormones (JH) and 20-hydroxyecdysone (20 E)) in JGM-treated females. TEM observations showed that the size of the lipid droplets in the oocytes of JGM-treated females, compared with those in the oocytes of the control females, significantly reduced by 32.6 and 29.8% at 1 and 2 d after emergence (1 and 2 DAE), respectively. In addition, the JH levels of JGM-treated females at 1 and 2 DAE were increased by 49.7 and 45.7%, respectively, whereas 20 E levels decreased by 36.0 and 30.0%, respectively. We conclude that JGM treatments lead to substantial changes in lipid metabolism, which are directly and indirectly related to stimulation of reproduction of brown planthopper together with our previous findings.

Abstract
Previous work exploring the interrelationships between sex steroids (e.g. androgens, testosterones and 11-ketotestosterones) and social behavior in teleosts suggest that mirror-elicited aggression in cichlid fish may not trigger a hormonal response. Using the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) to analyze immune responses as a result of social stress, we measured levels of cortisol and melatonin using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) assays. In this work, we demonstrated that cortisol concentrations are significantly lower yet the levels of melatonin remain unchanged in tilapia that are fighting their mirror image. Our results suggested that in tied fights, certain hormone levels remain unchanged (e.g. androgens) due to the lack of melatonin induction.

Abstract
Background Menopause is described as the transition from the reproductive phase of a women to the non reproductive. Changes in hormone levels might lead to complaints and health consequences especially during peri- and postmenopause. Hormone therapy has a potential damaging health risk profile and is recommended for temporal limited therapy for acute vasomotor symptoms only. Objective The present HTA-report aims to assess the effectiveness and the cost-effectiveness of alternative treatment methods for women with postmenopausal symptoms in Germany regarding patient relevant endpoints (reduction of symptoms and frequency of adverse events and improvement of quality of life). Methods A systematic literature search was carried out in 33 relevant databases in September 2010. Citations were selected according to pre-defined criteria and were extracted and evaluated. Results In the systematic research 22 studies are identified for the effectiveness evaluation, 22 primary studies and one review. High doses of isolated genistein reduce the frequency/intensity of hot flashes while low doses of genistein show no significant effect. Intake of isoflavone extract such as genistein, daidzein, glycitein in various combinations does not have an effect on improvement of cognitive function or vaginal dryness. The effect of black cohosh and hop extract for menopausal complaints cannot be determined since results are heterogenous. The combination of isoflavone, black cohosh, monk’s pepper, valerian and vitamin E has a positive effect on menopause symptoms. Ginkgo biloba shows no significant effect on menopause symptoms and cognitive improvement beside mental flexibility. Acupuncture has a significant influence on hot flashes especially in severe cases. Discussion/Conclusion No final statement can be drawn regarding the effectiveness of alternative treatment methods due to qualitative shortcomings of included studies and a general limited availability of studies in this field. Furthermore, the generalization of the present HTA is limited due to the inclusion of only postmenopausal women.
